What should you absolutely not do when visiting the UK

A trip across the pond to the UK is a brilliant way to see the home of the Royals and the land of tea and crumpets. Plus, there is much more to the country than the capital, London. However, there are several little bits us tourists might not know before taking a trip. So here are the things you absolutely not do when visiting the UK.

Drive around the cities

The cities of the UK are great. London, Manchester, and Edinburgh are all so different from each other and will help you see what the country has to offer. However, you might not want to use a car if you aren’t familiar with the streets. The cities in the UK can be dangerous places for motorists as it’s every person for themselves. Thankfully, most cities have extensive public transport systems. Just take the tube system in London – you won’t even need a car to get around! If you want to keep safe and enjoy yourself, perhaps leave the car at home.

Assume everywhere is England

England is the largest country in the UK, but it isn’t the only one. In fact, the UK is made up of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, and everywhere is extremely proud of their own country. Yes, England may have been what drew you to Great Britain in the first place. However, this isn’t to say everyone will appreciate you calling their homeland “England.” After all, it would be like assuming Canada and America are the same places. They just aren’t.

Forget about your coins

In America, the coins can seem pretty meaningless. Quarters and nickels, who needs them? Well, in the UK you will want to remember that these coins are highly important. That’s because £1 coins can be used anywhere just like $ 1 bills. If you forget about their existence, you might find yourself with a pocket full of change. Before long you could spend your entire vacation weighed down by all the extra change until you are left needing another suitcase to get it all back home.

Randomly talk to strangers

Brits are funny. They love to tut and moan about the weather among other things, but they rarely like to speak with random strangers. Why? The people of the UK like who they know and keep it at that. In other countries, it can seem reasonable to strike up a conversation with the locals. However, when taking a trip to the UK, you don’t want to try and make friends. People will usually think you are strange and leave you talking to yourself in the street. It’s odd, but it’s normal to the Brits.

Stand on the left

There is a rule when it comes to using escalators – you don’t stand on the left. This area of the moving stairs is reserved for those in a rush or looking to burn a few extra calories on the way to work. If there is one thing you don’t want to do when visiting the UK, it is annoy the workers in the city. They are a hardened bunch of individuals that will fight you even when you’re down, especially if you make them late. If you don’t want to run up and down the escalators, simply stand to the right and hold onto the rail.

The UK is a fabulous place to visit any time of the year. Plus, you can finally find out why they talk about tea so much. Who knew it could taste so great over the pond? With this list of things you should absolutely not do when visiting the UK, you’ll blend in in no time.

France wins second World Cup in a final that had everything

France has clinched its second World Cup title with a 4-2 win over Croatia in a dramatic final in Moscow featuring a series of firsts and a pitch invasion orchestrated by Russian protest group Pussy Riot. EMPLOYMENT SEARCH UPDATE:

France Just Won the World Cup. Here’s How Much Their Players Get

France just played its way to its first World Cup victory in 20 years, defeating Croatia’s team 4-2 on Sunday to take home the soccer tournament’s iconic trophy, lifelong bragging rights and a whole lot of prize money.

But just how much cash will players on France’s team actually earn from winning the championship? It’s not up to FIFA, or even coach Didier Deschamps. The French Football Federation will decide how to distribute the first-place award.

For winning Sunday’s final, FIFA will give France $ 38 million from its prize fund. (Don’t feel too bad for Croatia — its team gets to lick its wounds with a cool $ 28 million). The money comes out of a $ 400 million pot, according to the Associated Press, which is up 12% from the last World Cup in 2014. In total, FIFA has earmarked $ 791 million to give to various 2018 World Cup teams for their preparations, players and performances.

As MONEY reported last month, the prizes are technically awarded to the various teams’ national soccer federations. Those organizations can then decide how they want to distribute the winnings, which means that players in some countries end up profiting a lot more than others.

The president of the French Federation, Noël Le Graët, has said his athletes will get 30% of the cash they earn. Each player was guaranteed a bonus of €280,000, or about $ 330,000, for making it to the final, according to BFMTV. So they’re at least taking home that much.

At least one player plans to donate his cut to charity. Kylian Mbappé, a forward, announced last month that he intends to give his $ 22,000-per-game fee — along with his bonus — to Preiers de Cordees, a sports charity for people with disabilities.

“When playing a World Cup, it’s a pleasure, because it’s a dream come true,” his teammate Samuel Umtiti told L’Equipe in French. “So yes, there is money at stake. But I do not care. I do not play for that.”

In fact, perhaps the most valuable perk that comes with winning the World Cup is the trophy, which weighs more than 13 pounds and is made of 18-carat gold. Designed by an Italian artist in 1974, it’s worth up to $ 20 million, according to USA Today.

But don’t get too excited: The winning team isn’t allowed to take the actual item home due to a series of misfortunes the original Jules Rimet Trophy encountered in the 20th century. Instead, they get to keep a gold-plated replica.

How One Florida Woman Lost 23 Pounds — and Gained $1,200 With a Free App

When Missy Novak stepped on the scale and realized she’d lost 8 pounds, she felt alarmed. In her words, she’s “a woman of a certain age,” so unexpectedly losing weight isn’t always good.

Then she realized the culprit: Shopkick.

Thanks to the shopping rewards app, she’d kicked her sedentary lifestyle and had become more active. It pays its users to complete certain tasks, like walking into a retailer or scanning an item’s barcode. Users then exchange these points for gift cards.

Since Novak started using Shopkick less than two years ago, she’s made more than $ 1,200 and has lost about 23 pounds.

How? She walks. And walks, and walks, and walks. Shopkick is like a scavenger hunt, taking her from retailer to retailer, aisle to aisle.

“I might be a little addicted to it,” Novak admits.

How Shopkick Works

First, download the Shopkick app through iTunes or Google Play.

Then, start earning “kicks” when you complete certain tasks, which include:

  • Walking into an affiliated retailer, including Walmart, Target, TJMaxx and more.
  • Scanning barcodes on Shopkick-listed products.
  • Taking a photo of your receipt that includes qualifying items.
  • Purchasing particular items with a connected credit or debit card.
  • Shopping online.

Don’t make the mistake of buying things you don’t need — just for kicks. And remember you can earn kicks without even making a purchase.

Once you accumulate enough kicks, exchange them for a gift card. For example, 500 kicks will score you a $ 5 Target or Walmart gift card.

And hey, you just might drop a few pounds, too.

Carson Kohler (carson@thepennyhoarder.com) is a staff writer at The Penny Hoarder. She uses Shopkick on occasion, though it doesn’t seem to cancel out all the desserts she eats.

This was originally published on The Penny Hoarder, which helps millions of readers worldwide earn and save money by sharing unique job opportunities, personal stories, freebies and more. The Inc. 5000 ranked The Penny Hoarder as the fastest-growing private media company in the U.S. in 2017.

Brian Reaves Is Re-Engineering Diversity and Inclusion at Dell

“The goal is for Dell to become the employer of choice for all. Our leadership realizes D&I as a business imperative and its shift from something you do to who you are at every layer of your business.”

Having served in a number of engineering and tech positions for more than 20 years, Brian Reaves decided to use his analytical mind and varied experiences to make a lasting impact on diversity and inclusion. He first made the transition from product design to overseeing D&I at software solutions giant SAP in 2016 before his appointment last September as chief diversity and inclusion officer for Round Rock, Texas-based Dell Inc., which generated revenue of $ 61.6 billion and employed more than 130,000 workers in 2017. From re-engineering the company’s recruitment process to tackling unconscious bias, Reaves has used his skill and reputation as an innovator and technologist to “merge both worlds” to continue the shift of D&I being viewed not as ‘a social thing’ but as a business imperative.”

In this exclusive, edited conversation, Reaves shares how he went from what he calls a “Boyz N the Hood existence in South Central” to disrupting Silicon Valley, and he discusses the need to create a metric-based D&I model and change the attitudes of managers in order to improve customer service, make employees more productive, and spark continuous innovation at the tech giant.

Diversity and Inclusion: “A Fundamental Shift Is Going On”

It’s been roughly two years since Dell’s merger with EMC. Where does the diversity and inclusion process stand at the company and what direction is being taken to enhance it?
Dell has brought together the best and the brightest to drive the company forward. The goal is for Dell to become the employer of choice for all. Our leadership realizes there’s a business imperative and its shift from diversity and inclusion being seen by many as something that you do versus D&I is definitely who you are at every layer of your business. It’s what our customers care most about. It’s what’s going to drive innovation. It’s what drives employee engagement. It’s what drives employee retention. It’s what drives top-line revenue and bottom-line margins.

So, we’re at this pivotal point where Michael Dell and our executive leadership team understand that a fundamental shift is going on, and hence hiring a person like myself to be able to drive with that business lens to accelerate to those opportunities that exist with our customers and with our partners, and certainly going back to recognizing that this is a talent play as well. The demographic of talent is changing significantly. So, if you optimize your talent strategies in a certain way to hire a certain type of person but you don’t realize that talent pool globally is changing or you’re not changing your strategies and tactics to engage that talent and support innovation, then it’s a missed opportunity.

diversity and inclusion

Dell offers everything from large-scale IT business solutions to powerful consumer gaming hardware such as its Area 51 machine. (Instagram)

In terms of becoming the employer of choice, tapping talent for greater innovation and competitiveness, how do you frame that in goals and metrics?
First of all, you have to do a prominence assessment. Probably the state of the norm today before making the investment and turning this corner was about how many lists we show up on. We have phenomenal representation. Our supplier diversity spending is $ 3 billion plus a year so you know we’re at the top of the top there. From an employee engagement perspective, having over 30,000 of our family members in our employee resource groups, which drives the cultural change that goes on and it’s measured there. How we recruit, the fact that we’re one of the top companies for LGBTQ employees. So, those measurements have always been in place and we rank very nicely. Things like our unconscious bias training and the number of people that go through that. We expect to have 100% of all of our people managers take that training by the end of this year; that’s been a metric that has been in place.

We’re now going to that phase of D&I as it relates to employee retention and employee engagement. We actually have some great internal surveys with our employees and those give us good metrics on what are the drivers of retention and engagement. We’re going to formally tie some of those questions that are indexed around D&I to those drivers to determine the impact on the business when that number or that index goes up or down. Then, if you could tie the D&I contribution to that component that drives retention or engagement then you’ll clearly be able to derive the direct impact of those two examples to Dell’s bottom line, which is pretty exciting.

So what’s the potential effect on operations and sales?
From a revenue perspective, we’re beginning to more formally attach the topic to our sales team. Right now, a lot of our customers reach out and, whether it’s in RFI [request for information] or RFP [request for proposal] where they have criteria around D&I that you must meet, they more formally bring up these topics as part of the overall opportunity to engage or the pursuit. To the degree that we do a formal account planning with D&I in mind, we’re going to begin to try to measure what’s the impact of having that proactive D&I pitched and the positioning in our engagement. Did that further expand relationships? Did that open up an opportunity for us? We’ll try to measure what was the impact of D&I to that pursuit and to that win, which is another metric.

How is that measured in terms of innovation and product development?
We are going to look at the entire baseline teams…those that may not be as diverse on whatever number of dimensions, whether its gender, ethnic and cultural diversity, or other ways like the performance and output of those product teams versus those that are more diverse.

We’ve done a good job as measured publicly but there’s some things that we want to do internally to put a finer brush on the impact of D&I to the same KPIs [key performance indicators] that we measure the business on. Again, revenue, innovation, retention, and engagement.

As it relates to culture and practice, we find that many companies that truly embrace diversity, it comes from the top. So how do you ensure that diversity mandate is communicated and connected to each layer of the company from the top down?
One step is to actually help employees really understand the language of D&I, things that happen every day that they’re not being conscious of what they do. No. 2 is going to the strategic level and really trying to drive the D&I narrative into the overall business narrative. Many companies that exist, I think D&I is seen as a sidecar, again, that’s what you do, not necessarily who you are. It’s a differentiator. When we talk about Dell, I don’t want to talk about our innovation but let’s talk about who we are as people. No. 3 is to drive it into our existing strategic imperatives. As an example, most companies talk about digital transformation from an innovative point of view. It’s also the talent transformation. There’s no company on earth that has ever won on technology alone. We believe that D&I is the enabler of that transformation.

A vital part of the talent equation is creating a pipeline. When you were at SAP, you led Project Propel which trained HBCU students for internships and jobs in tech. Is there a similar type of program you plan to implement at Dell?
I fully expect and have already begun to socialize the difference between just going out and recruiting at HCBUs and predominantly black institutions, predominantly Hispanic institutions versus sort of changing the game and giving that talent pool an unfair advantage that not only benefitted them but benefitted us. And that’s what Project Propel was about. Instead of just showing up on campus to have a greater pipeline that derives very little movement in representation because of bias and other things, those kids magically come up as No. 2, or they were really close but we chose this other candidate. But, by empowering them with skills and knowledge that you could be an alien and the company will be attracted to those. And that’s what we did at SAP and fully expect and plan as part of my responsibility to drive a similar program. It’s not in place as of yet fully but I’ve already engaged with our talent acquisition area to talk about those changes.

At 1pm on Wednesday, 7/11/18, The City of San Diego Rules Committee is Scheduled to Vote on The Single Use Plastic Reduction Ordinance

PRESS RELEASE

SAN DIEGO (July 11, 2018) — The Rules Committee agenda ITEM-2: Proposed Ban on Polystyrene Foam and Restrictions on Single Use Plastics in the City of San Diego, comes after a May 31st joint press conference. Council President Pro Tem Barbara Bry, Councilmember Chris Ward, as well as Surfrider Foundation, Coastkeeper, 5 Gyres Institute and Business For Good leaders announced proposed regulations that would place restrictions on the use of expanded polystyrene (commonly referred to as Styrofoam) and reducing the distribution of other types of single-use plastics in the City of San Diego.

The Single Use Plastic Reduction Ordinance has been advocated by volunteers of the Surfrider Foundation’s San Diego Chapter. Volunteers have successfully advocated for single-use plastic reduction ordinances of EPS in Solana Beach, Encinitas, and Imperial Beach.

The Surfrider Foundation’s San Diego Chapter volunteers collected 12,575 pieces of expanded polystyrene from San Diego County beaches in 2017 alone. Unfortunately, the majority is blown into the ocean because it is light in weight and easily breaks into very small, uncollectible pieces. Once in the ocean, polystyrene is often mistaken as food by marine life and ingestion of the single-use plastics can become fatal.

“Expanded polystyrene food ware containers are negatively impacting the environment, marine life, and the public’s health”, said Michael Torti, Executive Committee Chair of the Surfrider Foundation San Diego Chapter. “Surfrider Foundation’s 250,000 members, volunteers, and advocates support the adoption of the Single Use Plastic Reduction Ordinance.

The Single Use Reduction Ordinance would restrict the sale and distribution of polystyrene foam products for the use of food service ware, fish and meat trays, egg cartons, and coolers in the City of San Diego. Furthermore, the proposal would make single-use plastic food ware, such as straws and utensils, available only upon request.

The Surfrider Foundation advocates for the protection and enjoyment of our ocean, waves, and beaches by supporting the reduction of single-use plastics.

The 5 Gyres Institute’s mission is to empower action against the global health crisis of plastic pollution through science, education and adventure.

How Leading Contractors Deliver the Ultimate Customer Service Experience

A great company is about more than financial success. Customer experiences can make or break your business. A number of factors go into creating a positive customer experience: communication, great listening skills, perks, and more. If your customers love the product and service you deliver, your business will flourish, but if they don’t, it can mean fewer referrals and a bad reputation. Here are a few of the ways that leading contractors deliver the ultimate customer service experience to their clients.

Meet With Contractor

Constant communication

One of the easiest ways to keep your customers happy is by keeping the lines of communication open at all times. Communication is essential in any business, and clients who feel like their contractors listen to them will feel that you really care about their opinions, concerns, and concerns. This can and should be done through a variety of mediums, including telephone conversations, emails, social media updates, and of course face-to-face meetings. Just make sure to keep the lines between work and home life clear: after all, you can only provide the best customer service with a work/life balance that suits you and keeps you rested and refreshed.

Positive attitude

Home improvement projects can be unpredictable: maintaining a positive attitude even when circumstances (or clients) are tricky is important if you want to keep your customers happy. Try to look on the bright side, seeing the silver lining in everything. Your training as a customer service professional will help you to help your clients see things this way, too. How can you do this in your day-to-day business life? Be a problem solver by acting proactively rather than reactively and anticipate issues that may come up in a building project, knowing how you will go about solving them if and when they do arise.

Honesty

If for some reason a particular project does come across a bumpy road, it’s important that you tell your clients straight away. Hiding smaller problems may sound like an easy way to deal with a situation initially, but failure to reveal all the information could be disastrous if things worsen in the long run. We think honesty is always the best policy, so try to stay up front, open, and transparent about everything you do—including project issues, prices, availability of materials, and timelines. Trust goes a long way with customers, so getting this part of the client/professional relationship right is key if you want to deliver great customer service.

Dedication to quality services

If you love your brand, you will do everything in your power to make it succeed. Following your brand guidelines and ethos will not be lost on your clients; for example, if you say your brand specializes in eco-friendly builds, you can and should practice what you preach in every build. Clients will choose you because of the services you provide, so sticking to your guns will help your brand grow stronger and give customers another reason to love your work and remain loyal.

Employee morale

Contrary to popular belief, great customer service is about more than just pleasing customers. If you own your own construction business and employ subcontractors, architects, and other specialist builders, their happiness and satisfaction should be just as high a priority as that of your clients. Happy employees equal great craftsmanship and professionalism, so their attitudes will filter down through their work to your clients—and they will know whether or not your employees are happy in their jobs.

Perks and loyalty schemes

While loyal customers will stay by your side through thick and thin, a few treats every now and then never hurt anyone. In fact, introducing occasional perks and incentives to both new and existing clients will keep everyone happy. Similarly, loyalty and refer-a-friend schemes can bring in new business and further solidify the bond you have with regular customers. Try several different kinds of recurring offers and one-off promotions to keep customers pleasantly surprised and on their toes.

Satisfaction guarantee

While every contractor strives for perfection, the fact of the matter is that sometimes things don’t go to plan. If, for whatever reason, your customers aren’t 100% happy with the work you’ve done for them, they should have a right to say so. Of course, satisfaction guarantees can make a small financial dent when things go wrong, but having a policy in place from the get-go will make customers feel like they’re in control of their projects. An added bonus to this kind of policy is that it will look great on your marketing materials and draw in new clients.

‘I Probably Am the Person Referred to’ in Russian Hacking Indictment, Says Trump Adviser Roger Stone

Roger Stone late Friday acknowledged that he is likely the unnamed American referred to in an indictment of 12 Russian hackers issued by the Justice Department Thursday. Stone is not implicated in the hackers’ theft of Democratic emails, but appears to be one of several Americans whose interactions with the alleged hackers are detailed in the new indictment.

Stone, speaking to CNN’s Chris Cuomo, said “I certainly had a 24 word exchange with the persona Guccifer 2.0 over Twitter direct messages . . . I probably am the person referred to.”

The indictment (which can be read in full at Vox) accuses 12 members of the Russian GRU agency with hacking against staffers and infrastructure of the Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee. Those documents were then publicized by two online channels, a site called DCLeaks and a persona known as Guccifer 2.0.

Around August 15 of 2016, while “posing as Guccifer 2.0,” the hackers “wrote to a person who was in regular contact with senior members of the presidential campaign of Donald J. Trump,” according to the indictment. The exchange, recounted in paragraph 44 of the indictment, matches a known Twitter interaction with Stone, in which “Guccifer 2.0” praised Stone as a “great man” and offered to help Stone and the Trump campaign.

Get Data Sheet, Fortune’s technology newsletter.

Stone, an occasionally close Trump adviser and heir to the Roy Cohn/Richard Nixon school of political ‘dirty tricks,’ has previously confirmed the interaction with Guccifer 2.0. But he reiterated to Cuomo on Friday that the interaction was “benign” and “innocuous,” and the known interaction does not contain evidence of cooperation between Guccifer 2.0 and the Trump campaign.

However, there are hints that the interaction may not have ended on Twitter. A few weeks later, Stone wrote on Twitter that “it will soon [be] Podesta’s time in the barrel,” implying foreknowledge of the planned schedule of email leaks – though Stone has claimed that was merely a coincidence. Stone also praised Guccifer 2.0 as “a hero,” however, and wrote an article for Breitbart.com arguing that Guccifer 2.0 was not linked to Russia.

In his conversation with Cuomo, Stone continued to hedge on the question of whether Guccifer 2.0 was in fact a Russian front, emphasizing that the new indictment consists of allegations rather than proven facts. In the face of near-universal consensus among U.S. intelligence agencies on Guccifer 2.0’s links to the GRU, Stone’s denials may suggest anxiety about future findings by Robert Mueller’s investigation. And it certainly reflects his often-repeated modus operandi: “Admit nothing. Deny everything. Launch counter-attack.”

‘The Wire’ Star Wood Harris Won’t Face Charges for Allegedly Beating His Girlfriend

Wood Harris, known for his role as Avon Barksdale on the hit HBO series “The Wire,” — won’t face any criminal charges after allegedly beating his girlfriend.

She is now threatening further legal action.

via TMZ:

The alleged incident went down back in April in Philly, when Harris’ gf of 2 years, Anya Richardson, claimed he flew into a violent rage that landed her in the hospital.

According to a police report, obtained by TMZ, Richardson claimed he struck her multiple times in the stomach, neck and ribs. Richardson also alleged he spat on her face and choked her.

We reached out to Richardson, who tells TMZ … Harris invited her to Philly where he was shooting “Creed II.” She tells us they were in his hotel room when the unprovoked attack allegedly went down.

She says she went to the hospital the next day and reported the incident to police the day after her hospital visit. We spoke to a rep for the Philadelphia D.A.’s Office who tells us … they could not prove beyond a reasonable doubt a crime had occurred, so they declined to prosecute.

Richardson’s attorney, Alberto Ebanks, tells TMZ … his client “feels there is little choice but to pursue alternative remedies to help protect other women from the threat of assault.”

A rep for Harris tells TMZ … “The account by this woman is pure fabrication. Wood was never questioned by the authorities and that should speak to the authenticity of the accusation. No further comment.”

When will people learn to keep their hands to themselves?

Ever Wonder How a Class Action Works? We Talked to an Expert to Find Out

The numbers are always striking.

Honest Co. agreed to pay out more than $ 7 million after a dispute over ingredients.

Another $ 11.2 million is coming from adultery website Ashley Madison after a massively embarrassing security breach revealed customer data.

And a judge ordered that Dish Network pay a whopping $ 61 million for telemarketing calls a contractor made on behalf of the company to people on the National Do Not Call Registry.

If you qualify for even one of these class-action lawsuits, seeing settlement agreements in the millions can make you feel like you’ve won the lottery, at least in the beginning. But if you’ve ever received a payout, you know that in most cases, by the time your check arrives in the mail, your cut of the pie can feel pretty insignificant.

To understand why, you need to understand a bit more about the life cycle of a class-action lawsuit, and the difference between how we use some terms colloquially and what they really mean to legal professionals.

First, let’s start with the phrase “class-action lawsuit.”

A lawsuit is classified as a class action when a group of people sue the same company, accusing it of the same wrongdoing. In a traditional lawsuit, a single person or company sues another person or company.

The phrase “class-action lawsuit” is often used in newspapers, on TV and even by us at The Penny Hoarder from the moment a lawsuit is filed against a company. But the lawsuit isn’t technically a class action that early in the process, according to corporate attorney Jeff Lieser.

“You’re basically just putting the defendants on notice that you will be seeking to have a class certified,” he said. “Just because I decide I want to file a class-action lawsuit and I entitle the complaint a class-action complaint against John Doe for ripping off consumers, that does not make it a class action. It’s up to the judge.”

(Disclosure: Lieser works for the Lieser Skaff Alexander law firm, which handles legal issues for The Penny Hoarder.)

When Is a Class Action Really a Class Action?

Female judge discussing paperwork
PeopleImages/Getty Images

In some cases, class certification comes in the early months of a lawsuit. In other cases, that can take years, if it comes at all.

In the Ashley Madison case, class certification happened during the settlement process.

According to Lieser, pretty much every one of those scenarios can be considered normal. When it happens is less important, but the class certification is necessary if anyone other than the person or group handling the legal battle is going to get paid.

And getting a judge to certify a class can be tough.

The prerequisites for a class action in federal court are laid out in Rule 23 of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure. Most states have rules modeled after Rule 23 to govern class-action lawsuits filed in state courts.

Here’s what Rule 23(a) says must be in place before a lawsuit can be certified as class action:

  1. There have to be enough members in the class for it to be impractical for each to file individual lawsuits.
  2. The law has to apply in the same way to each member of the class.
  3. The claims of individuals in the class must be similar, and the company’s defense against each class member must be similar as well.
  4. The class representative — this is the person whose name is usually on the lawsuit as the plaintiff — and their attorney have to be willing to protect the interests of the class.

If all four prerequisites are met, the court moves on to Rule 23(b).

Here, only one of three items must exist for the lawsuit to move forward as a class action. The most common is the final item, Lieser said: The class members’ similarities should be greater than their difference to show that what happened to each person is a common practice of the company being sued.

Of course, if you are considering being the class representative for a class-action lawsuit, you’d have a lawyer to make sure these requirements are met. For most of us, though, we’d be among the unnamed participants waiting to see if it ends in a win at trial or an out-of-court settlement followed by a check.

Why Do Companies Settle and Say They Did Nothing Wrong?

Statue of justice
belenox/Getty Images

If you’ve ever read even one article about a lawsuit that’s been settled, you have probably read that despite a multimillion-dollar settlement and the promise to change business practices, the company still “denies all wrongdoing.”

If you think this seems contradictory, you’re not alone. But Lieser said the laws governing class-action lawsuits make it so companies can right wrongs without admitting guilt.

“If you’re changing your business practices, people are going to assume that they need to be changed because they were screwed up before or you did something wrong,” Lieser said.

But legally, agreeing to settle and change practices without conceding guilt is allowed.

“That is because courts want to be an agent of change, and they don’t want there to be a disincentive to remedying those things that are out there that can cause harm,” Lieser said. “They don’t want something used against you… The courts want companies to do the right thing.”

That’s why the apparent inconsistency is allowed: The courts don’t want a change in practice or a large settlement to eventually lead to more lawsuits against a company that has just admitted guilt.

OK, There Was a Settlement. When Do You Get Paid?

Close up of hands
MangoStar_Studio/Getty Images

Like just about every other question we had about class-action lawsuits, the answer is: “It depends.”

“It’s always going to be years,” Lieser said. “It’s just a matter of how many years. It’s a safe bet that it’s going to be anywhere from two years to 10 years or more in some cases.”

Then, when a case is finally over, the large cash settlements cover much more than consumer payouts.

The money must also cover attorney’s fees, which Lieser said normally hovers around one-third of the settlement, and the cost of informing members of the class that they’re owed money.

That means the bare-bones websites that go up so people can file electronic claims; any ad space purchased in newspapers, online or on TV; the pay for people on hand to answer questions from those trying to see if they qualify for a payout. All of that could come out of the settlement.

“Class actions often get a bad rap for this,” Lieser added.

And depending on the size of the class and the settlement, it could mean just a few dollars, like the Red Bull settlement a few years back, or more than $ 1,000, like the Dish Network case.

The deadline to file a claim is usually stated in the settlement agreement, but in some cases, that can be extended. In the Wells Fargo fake account settlement, for example, the deadline to file was extended to July 7 after the bank failed to properly notify consumers about the settlement.

No matter how long it takes, if you’ve been promised a settlement and you can prove that you qualify, you’ll likely get paid eventually — even if it’s just a few bucks.

UPDATE: 27 more people sickened by Kellogg’s Honey Smacks cereal, retailers still selling it

A month after a voluntary recall was first issued, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) says another 27 people have fallen ill in 19 states after eating Kellogg’s Honey Smacks cereal tied to a salmonella outbreak.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration says the contaminated cereal can still be found for sale at some retailers.

100 cases now tied to Kellogg’s Honey Smacks cereal recall

The CDC has reiterated its call for people to stop eating the cereal and for stores to stop selling it. One hundred case have now been tied to the June 14 recall of an estimated 1.3 million cases of Honey Smacks cereal.

In fact, two more states have reported outbreaks — Florida and Colorado. That brings the state count up to 33. You can see a map that shows all states where people have been sickened by the cereal here.

As a reminder, the recall involves 15.3 oz. and 23 oz. packages of Kellogg’s Honey Smacks cereal with the following UPC codes:

If you already have any of these products at home, do not eat them. Throw the cereal away and visit Kelloggs.com/HoneySmacksRecall for info on getting a full refund.

According to CNBC, the recall was initially prompted by 60 reports Kellogg Company received from the FDA and CDC about illnesses related to the cereal.

The third-party manufacturing facility that made the cereal has stopped production.

Salmonella is a bacteria that can cause symptoms such as fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain, and may even be fatal in young children, frail or elderly people. In rare cases, Salmonella can cause more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis if it gets into the bloodstream.

32 Teams Entered, 2 Remain. Your Ultimate Guide to the World Cup Final

For many football fans, an England-France World Cup final would have been a dream. After all, those two countries clashed the Hundred Years’ War. A ten-decade-long spat, plus a smattering of other conflicts across the ages, tends to sizzle up a soccer rivalry.

Croatia, however, had other ideas. And that’s just fine. The Blazers rallied to beat England in the semifinal, 2-1, with Mario Mandzukic scoring the deciding goal in extra time. After Mandzukic’s strike, the Croatian players trampled photographer Yuri Cortez while celebrating. Cortez, to his everlasting credit, kept snapping his camera at the bottom of the dogpile. (He got some wonderful shots.) After the Croatian players realized they almost crushed a working photographer, a few patted him on the shoulder, or made sure he was okay. One kissed him.

So Croatia’s got some underdog charm. With a population of 4.1 million — about the same as Oregon — Croatia is the second-least populated country to ever reach the World Cup final. Only Uruguay, which won the titles in 1930 and 1950, has fewer people. Croatia entered the tournament a 33-1 longshot to win the whole thing. It’s still a relatively young nation, having declared independence from the former Yugoslavia in 1991 and fought through the Balkans conflicts in the 1990s, during which thousands of Croatians were killed.

“Like many countries which had to win independence the hard way, we are proud,” says Pjer Šimunović, Croatia’s ambassador to the United States.

That pride’s now causing earthquakes. Seismic instruments in Zagreb picked up tremors after Mandzukic scored his goal, and after the ref blew the final whistle to end the game. A World Cup win could break the Richter scale. “Everybody in the world will certainly now know more about that small country which was able to go that far,” says Šimunović. “This is immeasurably important.”

But France, the betting favorite at -220 (risk $ 220 to win $ 100), would love to crush Croatia’s dreams. The World Cup final airs on Sunday, at 11 a.m. eastern time, on Fox. Here’s your handy guide to the big game.

Rainbow 2.0

France won its only World Cup 20 years ago, when it hosted the most popular sporting event on the globe. That multicultural squad, known as the “Rainbow Team,” was composed of players with roots in North Africa, West Africa, the Caribbean, the Pacific islands, Armenia and the Basque country. Many people in France expected the victory to win widespread support for immigrant communities. They also expected France to win more World Cups.

Neither, to this point, has happened. Two decades later, far-right populism has caught fire across Europe; in France and elsewhere, a number of politicians have taken anti-immigrant stances. On the pitch, France failed to advance to the knockout stage at the 2002 World Cup; four years later, Les Blues reached the final against Italy, but Zinedine Zidane’s headbutt of Italy’s Marco Materazzi in that game overshadowed the accomplishment. Italy took the penalty shootout.

France’s 2010 World Cup effort was disastrous. French striker Nicolas Anelka was sent home for cursing at his coach: the players boycotted a day of training, a top official resigned in disgust, and France failed to win a game. Les Blues reached the quarterfinals in Brazil four years later, and as host county of the 2016 Euros, made it to the final before losing to Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal.

So France will try to take care of unfinished business. Like the ’98 Rainbow Team, the 2018 incarnation of Les Blues is incredibly diverse: 17 of the 23 players on the roster are sons of first-generation immigrants. Win or lose, dreams of a more unified France will flourish once again.

Croatia 101

Croatians have made their mark on American culture. The late Drazen Petrovic and Toni Kukoc exported their basketball talents to the NBA back in the 1990s; now, Dario Saric (Philadephia 76ers) and Bojan Bogdanovic (Indiana Pacers) are solid pros. Croatian sculptor Ivan Mestrovic produced two bronze statues depicting mounted Native American warriors; installed in 1928, they flank the Congress Plaza entrance to Chicago’s Grant Park. Goran Ivanisevic won Wimbledon, in 2001. Before he lost his belt to Daniel Cormier last weekend, Stipe Miocic — an American who’s the son of Croatian immigrants — was the UFC heavyweight champ. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, some 400,000 Croatian-Americans live in the U.S. Game of Thrones is filmed in Dubrovnik, Croatia; Star Wars: The Last Jedi also shot scenes in the city.

Still, before this World Cup, Croatia wasn’t exactly top of mind for most Americans. “Most people know of it here,” says Indiana University visiting lecturer Teuta Ismaili, who teaches Croatian at the school. “But they think the war is still going on.”

So what should you know about Croatia? First, the country’s home to some of the world’s most scenic beaches and islands, along the Adriatic coast. Travel and tourism accounts for about a quarter of Croatia’s GDP, which is well above the 10.3% average for the European Union. If you want to drink like a Croatian at your World Cup viewing party, serve Rakija, a 40% alcohol-by-volume spirit. And be sure to make some Burek, layers of dough filled with cheese.

The World Cup’s psychic lift has arrived at an opportune time. Since Croatia joined the European Union in 2013, net migration from the country has averaged around 17,000 people. Youth unemployment remains high, at 33%. Croatia came out of a six-year recession in 2015, but economic growth remains slow.

“This is the best thing the could happen right now to Croatia,” says Ismaili. “Family and friends back home say the atmosphere is positive. People were mad at the politicians, mad about the economy. But they’re finally having that feeling of ‘wow, we are important again. We really mean something.’ We really need that right now.”

Mbappé Mania

French forward Kylian Mbappé, 19, is the breakout star of this World Cup. Against Argentina in the Round of 16, Mbappé — the son of a Cameroonian father and Algerian mother — became the first teenager since Pele in 1958 to score two goals in a single World Cup match. Versus Belgium in the semis, Mbappé delivered a magical pass off his back heel to Olivier Giroud; Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois blocked the shot, but that didn’t stop the internet from losing its mind.

Both Neymar, the Brazilian star, and Mbappé joined French club Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) last summer for ungodly sums of money. PSG paid Barcelona a $ 263 million transfer fee for Neymar, and agreed to pay him $ 53 million a year, for five years. PSG got Mbappé from Monaco for about $ 200 million. For years, Neymar has positioned himself as the world’s undisputed best player, should Ronaldo and Lionel Messi ever decline or step aside. But during this World Cup, Neymar’s histrionics stood out more than his play. Given Mbappe’s speed, skill, and maturity, he may be a rightful heir.

“If I were a big soccer club with all the money in the world, and I could sign one player,” says former Trinidad and Tobago goalkeeper Shaka Hislop, an ESPN analyst, “it would be Mbappé.”

Modric Magic

On the Croatian side, Luca Modric — a midfielder for Real Madrid — is the player to watch. “He’s cool and calm on the ball, and one of the best passers in the world,” says Hislop. “You can’t pressure him into making a mistake.” He can also shoot from distance, with unexpected power. Modric, 32, does not cut an imposing figure. You can picture playing against him in your Thursday night men’s league. “If you breathe on him too strong, you can imagine flying out of the stadium,” says Hislop. “But he’s the complete package, deceptively packaged.”

Odd side note: Modric is facing perjury charges in Croatia, in connection with testimony he gave in a financial fraud case against a former soccer executive. If found guilty, Modric could face up to five years in prison. So any victory celebration might not last too long.

And The Winner Is …

“I like France to win it,” says Hislop. “France has looked very balanced throughout the tournament.” Les Blues won their first two games in the group stage, before playing Denmark to a 0-0 draw. France hasn’t needed any extra time in its three knockout round victories; Croatia, meanwhile, needed extra time and penalty shots to get by Denmark and Russia, and scored in the 109th minute against England. In all, Croatia has played 90 minutes of extra time, the equivalent of a full additional game, while France will also enjoy an extra day of rest between the semifinal and final. Croatia’s fatigue factor, plus France’s raw talent — the defensive pairing of Barcelona star Samuel Umtiti and Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane give Les Blues an advantage — make France the safer pick.

Croatia, however, hasn’t tired out yet. England was the more rested team going into the semifinal, but Croatia looked more energetic in extra time. So don’t doubt Croatia’s readiness to outclass France, and parade the World Cup trophy around Zagreb, of all places.

Outfit Formula: Shorts and Pretty Tops

Mid-thigh shorts are popular with my clients, but most of my clients don’t feel pulled together when wearing them with basic tees. My suggestion is to style the shorts with a pretty top and casual flat footwear that’s dressier than flip-flops. The visual effect is relaxed and casual, but more grown-up and polished.

Here are four outfit ideas to get you started. Choose any colour palette across solids and patterns. Pick short lengths that make you feel fab.

1. Elaborate Knitted Top, Denim Shorts & Slip-Ons

Choose a knitted top made of jersey with some kind of detailing, like a peplum, hem frill, or exuberant sleeve. This example has ruched sleeves with ties that create an interesting effect with a pair of denim cut-offs and slip-ons like sneakers, espadrilles, or d’Orsay flats. Wear the top semi-tucked or untucked.

Eloquii Cuffed Jean Shorts

2. Dressy Shorts & Blouse with Slides

Choose dressy shorts, like a high-waisted style or a paper bag silhouette, and pair them with a dressy blouse made of eyelet, lace, or something silky. Tuck or semi-tuck the top to showcase the waistband of the shorts. Add flat slides to dress down the look. A straw bag adds a trendy yet classic and beachy touch.

Topshop Polka Dot Shorts

3. Shorts & Boho Blouse

This is the easiest version to pull together. Combine a pair of simple shorts with a breezy boho-lite blouse. Wear the top untucked and not semi-tucked like the model. Finish off the outfit with flat sandals or espadrilles, and a casual bag.

Athropologie Utility Stretch Shorts

4. Patterned Shorts, Knotted Top & Sneakers

Combine a pair of patterned shorts with an elaborate knitted top that you can knot at the hem to create some structure. That way you don’t need to tuck or semi-tuck the top, or let it hang and look tent-y. Finish off the outfit with sneakers. Here, the white top and sneakers match, pulling the look together. The silky shorts add textural interest and the sneaks throw in the athletic touch. A fun juxtaposition.

Eloquii Floral Print Drawstring Shorts

I don’t wear shorts of any description since I’d much rather wear a casual dress with casual footwear. That said, if a fabulous pair of knee-length shorts came my way I’d give them a whirl with a boho-lite blouse.

Nothing happened at first — that’s what makes the plant so incredibly brutal — but that would change.
