4 Cute Umbrellas That Go So Well With a Trench Coat

I think we can all agree that getting caught in a rainstorm or leaving the house unprepared for the day’s precipitation is one of the most unfortunate weather scenarios to get caught in. As long as the weather report is accurate, we’ll be prepping for the next downpour by shopping the one essential we can’t really leave the house without: an umbrella. But not just any umbrella, a cute umbrella that won’t clash with the rest of your oufit (if you’re lucky). If you lament the fact that the clunky accessory so often obscures whatever cool combination your closet came up with that day, may we suggest giving a clear PVC umbrella a go? Alternately, for those facing an endless series of rainy days, swap thatclassic (read: boring) plain umbrella for a much more eye-catching version. Below, four cute umbrellas that were hand-picked to go with a weather-appropriate trench coat (or really any other jacket of choice).

Seasoned Londoner’s know this all too well, but there’s really nothing chicer than a classic black umbrella, especially when worn with a topper as timeless as the trench coat.
The iconic Alexander McQueen skull makes this plain black umbrella a bit more special.
Its sculpted edge is designed so it will never collapse in on you during a particularly windy rainstorm.
Does it get more classic than this London-inspired pick?
Cliché as it sounds, bright, unexpected colors are the easiest way to brighten your mood on an overcast day. Opt for electrifying shades of orange, yellow or pink to inject something refreshing into an otherwise dull day (as far as the weather is concerned).
Pile on the pastel hues when you leave the house in this bright umbrella.
If all else fails, try manifesting the sun through a bright shade of yellow.
This cute umbrella will pop against a monochrome outfit.
Though technically she’s wearing a bomber jacket, this stylish woman opted for a clear PVC umbrella that would easily work with any outfit. Pattern and colorless, the see-through material never clashes with anything.
There’s little chance your clothes or bag will get wet if you’re carrying around a bubble-shaped umbrella like this one.
From the brand that brought us some of the most iconic rainboots in fashion history.
On the plus side, a clear umbrella will never clash with the rest of your outfit.
Just because the weather is gloomy and a bit depressing doesn’t mean your accessories have to be. Pick from all the cute printed umbrellas to add a necessary dose of personality to your rainy day attire.
Black and tan stripes make for an incredibly stylish pair.
You can’t go wrong when it comes to Missoni’s iconic chevron pattern.
Wear with yellow or red to pick up the colors in this tartan print.

Versace RTW Fall 2018

“The Clans of Versace” – Donatella Versace’s fall collection was, according to the opening quote of her show notes, an ode to women who “know that today nothing is acquired through birth, but rather earned through what they achieve.”
A lovely thought, and powerful, but complicated to express via clothes on a runway — even if you hadn’t cast Kaia Gerber. No knock on Kaia. She’s a beautiful girl who, in a short time, has become a very good model. But one would be hard-pressed to miss the irony between the show’s stated platform and Kaia’s casting.
Such is the dilemma of deep-thoughts messaging on the runway: Little details can prove awkward. Happily, not so the clothes themselves in Versace’s follow-up to last season’s supermodel scarf-print spectacular. On Friday night, Versace showed a flamboyant, feisty collection, her “clans” construct imposing unity on several disparate ideas. She baited the youth vote with timed-honored tartans, her take descended as much from Vivienne Westwood’s Worlds End as the Highlands: varsity mufflers, sweaters and kilts, all wantonly mismatched and pieced together in pretty-in-punk pilings. For evening, these morphed into a black bustier over logo T and zany, pouffed-out skirt – a delightful take on bad-girl glam.
Yet girls are not the brand’s core constituency, nor

Rick Gates Flips From Paul Manafort’s Old Pal to Robert Mueller’s New Weapon

Photo Illustration by Elizabeth Brockway/The Daily Beast

Rick Gates has gone from Team Trump to Team Mueller.

The former senior official on Donald Trump’s presidential campaign has agreed to cooperate with special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into whether the campaign colluded with Russia. As part of his plea deal, Gates agreed to testify at “any and all trials,” which would include the upcoming trial for his former business partner and campaign boss, Paul Manafort.

Gates admitted to helping Manafort run a secret scheme to influence American politics on behalf of Ukraine’s then-ruling party, aligned with Moscow, and living like an oligarch in return for it. Manafort and Gates were accused Thursday of laundering more than $ 30 million in money from Ukraine, which they spent on luxury cars, real estate, and more.

What Are Domino’s Powers in ‘Deadpool 2’?

Everyone’s favorite “Merc with a mouth” is back and this time he’s not alone. Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) is assembling an X-Force of his own, which includes Atlanta actress Zazie Beetz. Beetz is playing Domino, one of the new characters in the Deadpool sequel. So what exactly are Domino’s powers in Deadpool 2?

Who Is Domino?

domino deadpool comics

Before we get into her powers, let’s take a look at her backstory. In the comics, Neena Thurman was taken as a baby and given genetic enhancements as part of Project Armageddon. Her biological parents rescued her and she grew up to become a mercenary. The first team she joined was Six Pack. Six Pack was a mercenary team led by Cable — the character Josh Brolin is playing in Deadpool 2.

After Six Pack, Domino and Cable both joined X-Force. During that time, Domino was actually abducted and replaced with a mutant shapeshifter named Copycat. Here’s where Domino’s comic book backstory gets interesting. In the comics, Copycat’s real name is Vanessa Carlysle. In Deadpool, Vanessa is played by Morena Baccarin. So does that mean the love of Wade’s life, Vanessa, could secretly be a mutant? And will she replace Domino at some point? We’ll have to wait and see.

What Are Domino’s Powers?

Let’s jump into Domino’s powers. The genetic experiments Project Armeggedon performed on her as a child left her with a form of telekinesis, specifically the ability to generate fields of “good luck.” Think of her as the Marvel counterpart to the DC character Hazard. Both Domino and Hazard can manipulate probability, which makes it seem like they have really good luck.

Domino’s powers are always turned on, but she has to actively engage with them to work. She also has advanced military training, which makes her an expert marksman and a skilled combat warrior. Based on the trailer for Deadpool 2, which is linked above, we also know that she is an agile motorcyclist.

The question remains: will she be a friend, foe, or someone looking to change Deadpool’s luck?

Deadpool 2 hits theaters May 18th, 2018.

Kaiser Permanente Breaks Ground on Second Location in Pueblo

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Kaiser Permanente executives will be joined by local county officials for a groundbreaking ceremony marking the beginning of construction on the new Kaiser Permanente Acero Medical Offices. The ceremony is scheduled to take place Tuesday, Feb. 27, at 12:30 p.m. The facility will provide Kaiser Permanente members with a second, convenient location on the south side of Pueblo.

Located at 2625 West Pueblo Blvd., at the intersection of Pueblo Boulevard and Acero Avenue, the Acero Medical Offices is expected to open in early 2019. The 8,200-square-foot facility will provide access to primary care, specialty care, laboratory, pharmacy and routine medical imaging services — all under one roof.

“Our membership in Southern Colorado continues to grow and we are committed to expanding our services to better serve our members. We’ve been working to offer more convenience and this new location was ideal to provide another access point for our members in this part of the community,” said Holly Kortum, Kaiser Permanente’s executive director in Southern Colorado. “Our Acero Medical Offices will make it easy to see a doctor, pick up a prescription, or have blood work done all in the same building.”

The Acero Medical Offices is a part of a larger, multi-year plan to expand in Southern Colorado, which included opening the Parkside Medical Offices in central Colorado Springs and the addition of pediatric care to the Briargate and Parkside Medical Offices, also in Colorado Springs. Specialty care was added and the number of local Colorado Permanente Medical Group physicians in Southern Colorado increased; today there are 15 primary care physicians, eight specialists and eight hospitalists — with more specialty care to come.

Pharmacy hours have also been expanded to include Saturday hours at all three of our Southern Colorado locations, and after-hours evening care is now offered at the Parkside Medical Offices.

While specific staffing plans are still in the works, the new Acero Medical Offices will employ approximately six health care professionals, including two physicians, nurses, technicians and administrative staff.

“By offering high-quality primary care and services at the Acero Medical Offices, while continuing to work with our diverse network of local physicians, we can meet the unique needs of our members in this community,” said C. Rocky White, MD, Kaiser Permanente’s Southern Colorado market medical director.

Kaiser Permanente has also increased its commitment to health technology by launching several virtual care options to provide convenient access to care when and where our members choose. These services include e-visits, video visits, email and phone. Kaiser Permanente also launched a new on-demand service called “Chat with a Doctor.” The service is an online platform that allows all Kaiser Permanente Colorado members to securely interact with a Kaiser Permanente physician in real time, for questions or advice.

As a nonprofit, Kaiser Permanente is committed to improving the health of its communities. Since 2010, Kaiser Permanente has donated more than $ 3.1 million to Southern Colorado nonprofit and community based organizations to improve access to safety net clinics, educate the public about food insecurity, bolster physical activity for schoolchildren, and address teachers, students and school staff’s mental health needs.

Embattled Missouri Governor Accused of Using Message-Deleting App

Photo Illustration by Elizabeth Brockway/The Daily Beast

Missouri Governor Eric Greitens was indicted Thursday on charges relating to allegedly blackmailing a former mistress with a nude photo he took without her consent. But when it comes to his own private information, Greitens is accused of deleting anything that could fall into investigators’ hands.

Greitens, who was indicted on a felony invasion of privacy charge for allegedly taking the nude photo, is also under investigation for his use of the messaging app Confide. Beloved by White House officials, Confide automatically deletes messages and attempts to prevent screenshots. Despite state laws barring Missouri officials from destroying records of their communications, Greitens and his staffers were caught using the app in the weeks before news of the affair went public.

In December, the Kansas City Star reported that Greitens and his senior staff used Confide to send messages. But despite Confide’s privacy-minded sales pitch, researchers have raised doubts about the app’s security. In early 2017, security research firm IOActive notified Confide of a number of flaws that would made the app vulnerable to hackers. Confide said it fixed the weak spots. But members of Trump’s inner circle had reportedly been using the app for months before the repairs.

Celebrity Stylist Ilaria Urbinati Teams With Strong Suit

NEW YORK — Expect to see Armie Hammer sporting a black-and-white hopsack sport coat on a red carpet sometime soon.
The jacket is part of a collaboration between celebrity stylist Ilaria Urbinati and the Little Rock, Ark.-based Strong Suit that will be launching for spring.
The pair was introduced around two years ago by actress Cameron Richardson, and the result of that meeting will be a collection of men’s suits, sport coats and dress shirts under the Strong Suit by Ilaria Urbinati label that will launch at Nordstrom’s new men’s store slated to open in New York in April. The collection will also be carried at the retailer’s Los Angeles store at The Grove.
“Ilaria is genuinely looking for the best style for her clients,” said Jamie Davidson, founder and creative director of Strong Suit, which was purchased one year ago by Oxford Industries. “She cares about the substance of the clothes, not the branding. So I’m incredibly grateful that she decided to work with a little start-up from Little Rock.”
The negotiations with Nordstrom, which carries Strong Suit’s regular men’s collection at several stores, started over a year ago. But once they saw the collection, “they were totally on board with it,” he said.

Remember When We Were Sidekicks? – BLACK PANTHER and COMIC BOOK POLITICS

Minor spoilers ahead

This isn’t so much a review as a reflection. It’s well documented how I feel about Black Panther. I pushed for Black Panther’s inclusion in the Avengers years ago. In April 2013, I wrote “It’s Time For Black Panther On The Big Screen.” If you’re just tuning in, you can look back through my archives for my previous Panther posts. Here’s Cary Darling’s Houston Chronicle article I was featured in “Houston fans are pumped for ‘Black Panther’ superhero movie with virtually all-African-American cast

Well, I saw it.

Black Panther was one of the best movie experiences of my life.

First, this film isn’t “homework.” Typically, movies featuring a black cast feel as if they need to instruct audiences about the ills of society past and present. Black creatives know we may never have the media mic again, so we don’t waste any moments. In my humble opinion, you’re grown, and it’s unrealistic to burden a mainstream movie with responsibility to make you a better person. That cake is baked. The only hope for a better tomorrow lies within the children. Which is why the stories they see and hear about heroic people that look like them, and don’t, are vital. Blissfully, there are no sermons in Black Panther. White colonizers never even knew the technocratic marvel of Wakanda existed, so Wakandan society flourished atop a mountain of the most precious metal on earth, unmolested.

But, to director Ryan Coogler’s and Marvel Studios’ credit, Black Panther doesn’t shy away one iota from speaking truth to power about the broader consequences of isolationism, classism or societal injustice. Thematically, the tone of the film is a tasty gumbo of an Aesop fable and James Bond political pot-boiler with a side of Game of Thrones court intrigue and a dash of hot sauce. The strongest nations throughout history learn the greatest threats are not from without but within; Wakanda is no different. No one can escape the consequences of the choices they’ve made, whomever you are, from a lowly orphan to a mighty King, to a nation of millions, as Malcom X said famously, “Your chickens will always come home to roost.”

There has been some buzz by angry white fanboys with absurd notions regarding Black Panther. They’ve declared comic book characters or stories must somehow be “apolitical”. And that the political agenda surrounding this film makes them “uncomfortable.”  (Aw, pobrecito!)

However, black folks continue to celebrate the creative, cultural and financial success of the only big budget comic book movie featuring a black cast and crew undeterred.

The tone-deaf reaction of some can be expected. Wonder Woman debuted to similar trolling about sexism (against men) and uproars about Alamo Drafthouse Theaters’ woman-only screeings. Racism, sexism and pop culture fandom aren’t mutually exclusive, in fact, any female, non-gender specific person, Bleek, cosplayer, collector, or actor of color can relay incidences of racism, sexisim or homophobia they’ve encountered. This harassment both online; like John Boyega for the crime of being a black stormtrooper in “The Force Awakens” or at cons where “Cosplay is not Consent” has to be repeatedly drummed into grabby Comic Con attendees.

I’ve been trolled by white men I don’t know from Adam with the caucasity to tell me I had “no right to speak about Black Panther because I’m not a real comic book fan.”  Now, not liking or even hating Black Panther doesn’t make you a racist. Telling me I can’t love it does. And using the fig leaf of “political agendas have no place in Comic Book Movies” to hide your bigotry only exposes your own political agenda.

As hard as it may be for you to believe, Jimothy, this movie isn’t about you…

White Supremacy is a Hell of a Drug

In his Forbes’ article chronicling Black Panther’s unprecedented success, Scott Mendelson (a white guy so you can trust him, Jimothy) titled “Box Office: ‘Black Panther’ Crushes Conventional Wisdom With Record $ 218M Debut” had this to say regarding Black Panther:

This isn’t just a blow to conventional wisdom about minority-led blockbusters, it’s a blow to conventional wisdom concerning the MCU. One of their more outside-the-box offerings, one of their most director-driven films and one of their most overtly political pictures yet, one that plays more like a drama than an action spectacular, is now on pace to be one of their very biggest movies. Like Pixar, I hope the MCU is realizing that its (stereotypically) riskiest bets turn out to be their biggest wins. Playing it safe is no longer the safe choice.”

Let’s talk a little about “politics in comics” before we move forward. Because this will come up more often as women, blacks, Asians, non-binary folks and others underserved in the pop media landscape take the lead on both sides of the camera and all phases of production in Hollywood. Let’s look at an example of how political thought not only has always been a part of comics, it grounds the greatest heroes and drives the best stories.

Captain America was created by cartoonists Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, his first appearance was Captain America Comics #1 published in 1941 by Timely Comics, a predecessor of Marvel Comics. Captain America was designed as a patriotic supersoldier who fought the Axis powers of World War II and was Timely Comics’ most popular character during the wartime period. Steve Rogers, “the skinny kid from Brooklyn” that became America’s enduring champion and the “First Avenger” in Marvels MCU, was 4F but wanted desperately to serve his country like his only childhood friend Sgt. Buchanan “Bucky” Barnes. Steve endured bullying with courage and tenacity, he knew what it meant to be powerless, which is why Dr. Erskine, the lead scientist of the super soldier program, believed Rogers was the ideal candidate.

Dr. Abraham Erskine: The serum amplifies everything that is inside. So, good becomes great. Bad becomes worse. This is why you were chosen. Because a strong man, who has known power all his life, will lose respect for that power. But a weak man knows the value of strength, and knows compassion.
Steve Rogers: Thanks. I think.
Dr. Abraham Erskine: [he pours two drinks] Whatever happens tomorrow, you must promise me one thing. That you will stay who you are. Not a perfect soldier, but a good man.”

Rogers, now a super soldier, dressed in red white & blue named Captain America quit touring with the USO selling war bonds, went to the front lines and punched Nazis in the face on a daily basis.

That’s a political statement.

It’s endemic to who he is. Rogers believes in, if not America as it is, the aspirational ideal of what America SHOULD be for all her people. He’s such a patriot, once he leaned the truth about what the American government was doing in our name? He helped take down SHIELD, fought Iron Man, and became a fugitive from justice. Can you separate Captain America’s political views or core beliefs about freedom and justice from his character?

Of course not. Nor should you. That’s WHY we love Captain America. It’s what makes him a hero.

-Amnestic fanboys must have forgotten political stances made in The Avengers and all three Captain America Movies. SHIELD/HYDRA. Steve Rogers RAFT breakout after Civil War. The Sakovia Accords; UN oversight of “enhanced” individuals that split the Avengers. The political asylum granted by Wakanda. The entire X-Men comic run since Mutants were allegories of blacks during the Civil Rights Era of the 1960’s. MUTANT REGISTRATION ACT. TRASK Sentinel Program. The Legacy Virus that decimated fictional mutants concurrently during President Reagan’s silence on the spread of HIV in the 90’s that cost millions of real people their lives. Or, the second episode of Superfriends that spoke out against man-made climate change and promoted ocean conservation in the 1970’s.

I could go on.

Decades of the politics of the day driving comic book stories that no one cared about, that is, when blacks were sidekicks. This changed last Thursday.

Black Panther is a movie about the heir to the throne of a fictional African nation who wears the hereditary mantle of both monarch and protector of his realm “The Black Panther.” Is it possible to ignore or separate his blackness and his unique Afrocentric culture or world view from this character? Should every narrative he’s a part of ignore the plight of black people that do not enjoy the privilege of Wakandan citizenship?

Of course not.

One of the most powerful Black Panther comic book stories was the Jungle Action series of the seventies featuring Black Panther vs. The Ku Klux Klan. How do you de-politicize a black king taking on the the Klan? Why should we even want to? Like Cap’s political stance and core beliefs, Black Panther’s ethnicity & culture are central to his narrative and endemic to the character.

Black Panther is a powerful, resonant, self-reflective exercise that pays homage to both the source material and the African diaspora. It represents with unconditional love, deep respect, unique style, and an effortless flourish, yet still remembers to be a hell of a good time at the movies!

Black Panther was more than I could possibly ask for and one of the best examples of what a comic book movie can be. Period.

Tod’s Seeks to Surprise With Drops, Collaborations

MILAN — Tod’s chief executive officer Diego Della Valle is overturning his company’s business model and launching a new project called Tod’s Factory, in a reference to Andy Warhol.
“It’s work in progress, we started developing it around six months ago,” Della Valle revealed ahead of the Tod’s runway show in Milan on Friday. “It means we will start dropping more collections throughout the year, capsules and limited editions, in collaboration with different individuals and friends of the house.” The executive declined to provide additional details about the designers, but said the first such collection would bow in June or July.
“Collections can no longer be presented every six months, and this is part of a new way to communicate and tell our story,” he explained. “This business model offers great opportunities, we can be faster and better control the collections.” Della Valle declined to say whether the women’s fall show, designed by a team, would be the last for the house. “We want to surprise you,” he said. He has been reviewing the role of a creative director after the exit of Alessandra Facchinetti in 2016, leaving the job to the brand’s team.

Sustainability and Technology Front and Center at Paris Fabric Fairs

PARIS — Sustainability and technology remained the headline topics at the recent editions of the Première Vision Paris, Texworld Paris and sister trade shows Apparel Sourcing and Avantex here.
Visitor numbers were largely flat, coming off a high base following a run of strong editions, with a dip in Asian visitors attributed to the Lunar New Year. PV Paris attributed a 5 percent dip in American visitors to current challenges related to the transformation of the retail landscape.
A number of mills at Texworld had upped their sustainability criteria, with 71 exhibitors participating in the show’s Sustainable Sourcing itinerary. “Traceability is becoming the biggest issue in the U.S. and European markets,” said Lenzing senior vice president for Europe and the Americas Marco Schlimpert. The company showcased its Ecovero eco-responsible viscose fiber, which launched last May and is seeing brisk demand, as well as its Refibra technology, which involves upcycling cotton scraps, for example from garment production, in addition to wood pulp to produce new virgin Tencel Lyocell fibers using closed loop production. Within the re-branded Texworld Denim section, meanwhile, Pakistan-based Rajby Industries, whose biggest clients include H&M, Inditex and Mango, debuted new sustainable cottons that use up to 50 percent less water

Paul & Joe: 10 hot pieces you need in your life

Fashion brand Paul & Joe is the cute, chic, cat-obsessed label that will give you a kooky Parisian twist. As the new SS18 collection hits stores, here’s our edit of the 10 hot pieces you need in your life right now…

fashion brand Paul & Joe

If you’re a fan of flirty, pretty, French style, you’ve got a lot to thank fashion brand Paul & Joe for. Long before ‘French-girl-cool’ was the Brit fashion fixation it is now, the label was doing exactly that. As revealed in Marie Claire’s Sophie Mechaly Interview, for this Parisian designer the brand is all about “girls with style who just love French chic.” With a fun-loving and playful beauty collection launching in 2002, followed by a casual line of womenswear Paul & Joe Sister in 2006, Mechaly has quickly amplified her label’s boutique feel into a blossoming empire.

Founding her womenswear line in Paris in 1996 – naming the fashion brand Paul & Joe after her two young sons – Mechaly created a label that would combine boyish design elements with a cute and retro femininity. Mechaly’s recipe: take men’s shirts and blazers, and mix with frilly high-necked blouses and 70s-inspired denim. Then, sprinkle with Mary-Jane shoes and delicate jewellery. Et voilà: perfect gamine chic. It’s clear to see, Mechaly’s signature shirting is in her genes. During her childhood, her parents both worked in fashion and ran two successful shirt labels (Julien and Le Garage). After working as a shop assistant for Azzedine Alaïa, Mechaly set up on her own. She decided that French fashion was too conservative and in dire need of some colour and fun.

As a result, there’s no shortage of cool-girls lusting over this effortless style. Kate Moss, Alexa Chung, Kate Bosworth, Vanessa Paradis, Olivia Palermo, Daisy Lowe and Krisztina Bazan are all disciples of fashion brand Paul & Joe. Mechaly has even received royal-approval from The Duchess of Cambridge, who wore a Paul & Joe cape as part of her royal India tour wardrobe in Bhutan. From royals to rock-chic, fashion brand Paul & Joe has it covered.

It’s clear to see, her seasonal shows are a go-to for this classic Parisian flair, and the Paul & Joe SS18 collection is no exception. With a nod to many Summer Fashion Trends, Mechaly says the collection’s print ideas came from a Vegas get-away romance. Picture the “wise girl from a wealthy family who falls in love with a bad boy” as her inspiration. She mixes the innocence of vintage children’s clothing with brocade fabrics. Then adds in retro 60s and 70s designs. It’s the perfect combination for the rebellious pretty-girl and wild-at-heart tomboy behind her collection.

All About Cortisol, and Signs That You’re Chronically Stressed

If you’ve heard about cortisol, most likely it was in relation to stress. Women know that chronic stress isn’t good for them, and that it’s linked to a number of health problems, including heart disease, stroke, and even cancer.

You may have also heard that when you feel stress, the body releases adrenaline and the hormone “cortisol.” But what exactly is cortisol, and what does it have to do with your overall health?

What is Cortisol, and What is it For?

To understand cortisol, it helps to understand what is called the “stress system.” This is the “fight or flight” system that kicks in when you need to get away from a dangerous situation.

Chronic stress can also cause your cortisol to stop working as it should. The system becomes overtaxed, and starts to break down.

Let’s say you’re walking along on the prairie, enjoying the afternoon sun, and suddenly you come upon a lion. (Okay, so you’re walking in Africa. Just go with me here.) A small part of the back of your brain, called the “hypothalamus,” sets off the alarm: danger, danger! The adrenal glands, which are located on top of your kidneys, respond, releasing a number of different hormones.

These hormones have a job to do, and that’s to get you away from the danger as quickly as possible. The two major players are:

  1. Adrenaline: Adrenaline gives you a surge of energy. You need to run, and now! This hormone increases your heart rate, elevates blood pressure, dilates your pupils, and charges up your muscles so you can do what you need to do to escape or survive.
  2. Cortisol: Cortisol is a little more complex. In general, it affects a lot of body systems, controlling blood sugar levels, regulating metabolism, reducing inflammation, and assisting in memory formation. It also helps control blood pressure and balances salt and water levels. During acute stress, such as when you’re facing that lion, it may shut down some systems that could get in the way of your escape, like your digestive system or your immune system. But then its main role is to manage that stress you just went through, decrease inflammation, and help the body as a whole to cope with what it just experienced.

Under normal conditions, your body releases these hormones, you get away from the lion, and once you’re safe, the levels of these hormones drop down again. All is well.

In today’s world, though, we rarely encounter lions. Instead, we’re often faced with smaller stressors, sometimes many throughout the day, each of which tends to activate the fight-or-flight system, even if just a little bit.

Imagine one woman’s busy day. She gets up a few minutes late, so she feels stress, because now she’s behind. She has to get her family up, fed, and out the door, and when one of her children looks like he’ll be late to school, her body revs up the stress hormones to help her manage the situation. Once the child is safely in his classroom, those levels start to go down, but then she gets an email from her boss wondering where her report is on her latest project. It was due yesterday.

Again, her stress goes up. She forgot about the deadline! She rushes to work, but gets caught in a traffic jam. More stress hormones, but she can’t do anything to release them. There’s no running allowed on the highway, so she sits and stews. She looks in the mirror and realizes in her rush that she forgot to put on her makeup. More stress hormones.

As you can see, this sort of lifestyle could result in little “stress hits” occurring throughout the day, and each time, the body releases cortisol in the system. Yet there is no release—no running away, no way to respond but mentally, so the cortisol tends to stay in the bloodstream, and that’s not good.

The Problem with Too Much Cortisol

Women who are either a) exposed to repeated stressors throughout the day without releasing them, or b) experience constant stress from issues like financial strain, health problems, and caregiving challenges, may experience chronic stress. This can result in continuously high levels of cortisol in the system.

Research has shown us that this is dangerous for overall health. The Mayo Clinic has linked it to an increased risk of not only anxiety and depression, but physical issues like headaches, sleep problems, weight gain, digestive issues, and heart disease.

Excess cortisol can weaken the immune system and cause inflammation to rise, leaving you at risk for:

  • infections
  • cardiovascular disease
  • autoimmune diseases,
  • osteoporosis
  • pain conditions like fibroymyalgia, low back pain, sciatica, and chronic fatigue syndrome

Chronic stress can also cause your cortisol to stop working as it should. The system becomes overtaxed, and starts to break down. The body may no longer be able to release as much cortisol as it needs, or may not be able to produce enough of it in the first place. Cells may grow resistant to cortisol, or hypersensitive to it.

Several studies, for example, have found that when subjects were exposed to repeated stress, their cortisol eventually failed to function correctly. Since cortisol is a potent anti-inflammatory—one of its main functions is to reduce inflammation—when it fails to work, the inflammatory response can run wild, potentially leading to other issues like free radical damage, cellular death, premature aging, and more.

How Can I Tell if I’m Chronically Stressed?

You probably already know if your life is stressful, but there are certain things you can watch for that could indicate your cortisol is struggling.

  • Chronic pain—fibromyalgia, low back pain, muscle pain, joint pain
  • Chronic fatigue—you’re always tired even if you get a good night’s sleep
  • Depression
  • Memory problems
  • Osteopenia (bone loss) or osteoarthritis
  • Irregular menstrual periods
  • Weight gain, particularly around the abdomen/stomach area
  • Higher susceptibility to infections (cold, flu, etc.)

It’s also important to be aware of two potential diseases related to cortisol levels:

  1. Addison’s Disease: Also called “primary adrenal insufficiency,” Addison disease is a rare autoimmune disease that damages the adrenal glands, after which they can no longer produce as much cortisol as they should. Symptoms include fatigue, weight loss, muscle loss, mood swings, and darkening of the skin.
  2. Cushing’s Disease: Tumors on the adrenal glands can cause this rare disease, in which there is too much cortisol in the blood. Symptoms may include rapid weight gain in the face, abdomen, and chest; flushing; high blood pressure; mood swings; and osteoporosis. “Cushing’s syndrome” is a different condition, and refers to high levels of cortisol in the blood not caused by a tumor. Certain types of cancer or certain medications, including hydrocortisone, prednisone pills, joint steroid injections, and asthma inhalers, may be to blame, instead.

If you suspect you may have symptoms from either of these diseases, ask your doctor to have your cortisol levels tested.

How to Keep Your Cortisol Levels Under Control

Fortunately, there are several things you can do to keep your cortisol levels under control.

  • Get 7-8 hours of sleep per night.
  • Exercise for at least 30 minutes every day—it helps your body shed that stress!
  • Practice a stress-relieving activity like meditation, yoga, journaling, or pet therapy every day.
  • Regularly connect with friends and loved ones.
  • Laugh more often.
  • Eat a diet high in fruits and vegetables.
  • Listen to uplifting music.
  • Control caffeine intake, particularly if you notice that you’re sensitive to it.

Logic to Bring Mental Health Awareness to Students in Michigan

Logic, a biracial rapper born Sir Robert Bryson “Bobby” Hall II, is redefining what it means to be a hip-hop artist. He’s a die-hard Star Wars fan, video gamer, and comic geek who regularly performs on stage while solving a Rubik’s Cube. But besides helping to bridge the gap between hip-hop heads and the nerd community, he’s saving lives—literally.

Last April, Logic released “1-800-273-8255,” a song titled after the hotline for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. The song became his breakout hit, rising to No. 3 on the Hot 100s and earning two Grammy nods. He told Rolling Stone that he was inspired to write the song by his fans, who frequently told him “’your music saved my life.’” In response, he thought, “What the f–k? What if I tried to save a life with a song?”

He did. On the day the song was released, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline received the second-highest call volume in its history. And “it’s remained high ever since,” Dr. John Draper, the director, told Variety last August.

Although he has yet to win a Grammy, the 28-year-old artist delivered a gut-wrenching performance at the 60th annual music awards show that featured a multicultural and -generational army of suicide survivors. Once again, calls to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline tripled after his powerful set on Jan. 28.

Now, the chart-topping rapper is taking his advocacy for suicide prevention one step further. Logic teamed up with Glenn Close, a legendary stage and screen star, and Brandon Marshall, an NFL player and the co-founder of Project 375, to host a mental health awareness event for students at the University of Michigan. Titled after a lyric from his hit song, “Who Can Relate?” the week will include mental health training, wellness, and a variety of educational events related to mental health stigma reduction

Logic will also participate in discussions about topics surrounding mental health issues and headline at a concert at the school’s campus on March 30.

In addition to this project, Logic aspires to open a suicide prevention hotline office. “I want the place to look like Comic-Con,” he told Rolling Stone.

FASHION DEALS UPDATE:

How Angels in America First Reminded the World That ‘Plays Can Matter’

When Angels in America returns to Broadway on Friday, in a production starring Andrew Garfield and Nathan Lane, it will encounter a very different world from the one in which the play debuted around 25 years ago. In the intervening years, HIV and AIDS — the crisis around which so much of the Tony Kushner epic revolves — ceased to be the “death sentence” they once were, and the LGBTQ community won major political victories across the United States and elsewhere. But, as Nathan Lane recently told TIME, that doesn’t mean the play doesn’t still have meaningful lessons for the world of 2018.

That political side has always been part of what makes Angels so significant in the history of American theater. TIME’s William A. Henry III first reviewed the play in late 1992, after it had already debuted in San Francisco, won awards in London and run in Los Angeles all before its 1993 Broadway opening. Though he found some of the acting “bland,” it was clear from his review that there was a reason why Angels was making such waves:

The central visual image of this season’s most eagerly awaited American play is a towering wall, like the facade of some Greek Revival government colossus, with two jagged cracks running from top to bottom. Before a word is spoken, this symbol — with its promise of that facade’s eventually cracking wide open — conveys the aura of physical decay and revolutionary social change that drives Tony Kushner’s 7 1/2-hr. epic about AIDS, gay liberation and the breakdown of the Reagan era’s sanctimonious hypocrisy…

Henry explained that one of the main reasons behind the anticipation for Angels in America was that the play represented a new era in the cultural depiction of gay life: “The author and the delighted spectators reflect an evolution in attitude akin to what happened among blacks and women: one generation sought empathy; the next demanded justice; the generation equivalent to Kushner’s just flat-out asserted equality and spurned any more debate.”

Get your history fix in one place: sign up for the weekly TIME History newsletter

Henry returned to the play about a year later, to cover the Broadway production, now complete with both parts, Millennium Approaches and Perestroika. Its box-office success — despite the early days of the Perestroika production being mired in behind-the-scenes drama ranging from rewrites to what Henry called “stagehand mania” — had defied any fears that the subject matter would only appeal to a niche audience.

And it was, as the piece noted, “hugely significant”:

More than any other work in a theater era of gay self-assertion, it has brought that perspective to the mainstream. Angels was not only the first gay-centered play to win the Pulitzer Prize for drama, it came to the fore just as the argument about gays in the military was putting the gay cause at center stage for the first time in U.S. history. With its aggressive scorn for Ronald Reagan and Republicanism; for Mormons and moralizing; and its demonic view of lawyer-dealmaker Roy Cohn, a gay-bashing closet gay and a top-level G.O.P. influence peddler for more than three decades, Angels disproved truisms about the unmarketability of political drama. Instead it compellingly reasserted the theater’s place in public debate. Hearteningly to theater partisans, Angels generated excitement about a drama comparable to the biggest buzz about musicals. Above all, Angels demonstrated that plays can matter in a pop culture dominated by electronically recorded performances rather than live ones.

That was why, despite the show’s rocky road to the stage and any nitpicking that might be done over the script or acting — Henry, for example, found the second part too quick to declaim its theories about the world, rather than letting the audience arrive at those conclusions — the team behind it only expressed pleasure with the result.

”When we look back on this in five or 10 years, we are not going to remember our exasperation at the script coming in late or how much money it cost,” Rocco Landesman, president of the theater-ownership group financing the 1993 production, told TIME back then. “We are going to remember that we are the producers of Angels in America, the most important play in a generation.”

‘Insecure’ Star Langston Kerman Shares Life As ‘Rent-A-Boo’ Guy

Langston Kerman aka “Rent-A-Boo” from Insecure has a lot of hidden talents that most people would not know about him. He’s taught high school English, has a masters in poetry and is a stand up comedian!

“Yah it’s a waste of time don’t do it,” said Kerman of his masters degree. “If y’all were going to go back to school do something else.”

Being on Insecure has changed so many things and brought new opportunities for him. “It changed everything man. It really has,” expressed Kerman. “I am rent-a-boo for the rest of my life but it’s been a nice thing to have people recognize me.”

Most people are not familiar with Kerman’s stand up career but he hopes to change that.”But people don’t know I’m funny. I’ve been doing stand up for 8 years,” he said.

His type of comedy is more of a punchy approach. “I talk a lot of trash. I like to stir it up,” he laughed. “You just want to talk about the stuff you live as much as you can.”

He’ll be performing at Caroline’s on Broadway February 23-25.

How to Plan a Wedding While Working Full Time

how to plan a wedding while working full timeI feel like I’ve seen a bunch of fun threadjacks on this recently(ish), so let’s discuss this today: what are your best tips on how to plan a wedding while working full time (or, as many of you do, well more than 40 hours a week)? What are the best things to outsource as far as wedding planning goes — and what are the best ways to simplify wedding planning? And a corollary question: what wedding planning tasks can you do at the office? We’ve talked about homing from work, making personal calls on the clock, and a bunch of aspects of wedding and business etiquette (including whether you should invite colleagues to your wedding) — as well as wedding finances — but I don’t think we’ve ever had a post rounding up everyone’s tips on how to plan a wedding.

A friend of mine just got married, so I asked her how she fit wedding planning in with her BigLaw job — here were her tips on how to plan a wedding while working full time:

Be very organized. Split tasks with your spouse. Consider a wedding planner (though we didn’t have one). Most things can be done well in advance so don’t save everything for the end.

For me, the two really busy times were the first month we got engaged, looking at venues and vendors and then the last month before. I brought a personal laptop into work and dedicated a half hour each day during lunch to just dealing with emails.

We had a full service place- I don’t know how people do it if they have to separately rent all the chairs and tables and glasses etc
We also did things when we could–we made a big playlist of both our phones and then listened to it in car rides, winnowing it down.

Great tips! I’ve also heard a lot of people who’ve advised to set up a “family” email for the wedding (I’m also a big fan of the family email once kids come along), and I could see either Slack or Trello as being a great way to keep everyone on the same page, which makes it much easier to hand off tasks to your partner as needed. (Slack is particularly great when you’ve having 15 different conversations with the same person at once so emails get totally lost and I find it easy to move among the conversations — Trello is more visually appealing if you prefer to see everything in separate buckets. Here’s a post on how to use Trello to plan a wedding.)

All right, ladies, what are your best tips on how to plan a wedding when you work long hours?

Stock photo via Stencil.

We asked our readers for their BEST TIPS on how to plan a wedding while working full time, whether you've got 40 hours a week or crazy hours like 60-80 hour weeks like for BigLaw lawyers. Some great tips on how to share wedding planning tasks with your fiance, what wedding tasks you can do at work, and more.

U.S. Women’s Figure Skaters Describe an ‘Exhausting’ Olympics After Finishing Far From the Podium

The return of America to the Olympic podium in women’s figure skating won’t be for at least another four years. The three female U.S. skaters competing in the 2018 Winter Games finished on Friday no better than ninth.

It was, according to one longtime figure skating reporter, collectively the worst performance by the country’s women figure skaters — ever.

“I am extremely disappointed, I’m not going to lie,” Karen Chen told the press after her free skate in the final on Friday afternoon (Thursday night stateside).

“I know I’ve trained myself to skate better than that,” Chen said, “and not being able to deliver is a huge let-down for myself and everyone who supported me.”

Chen, 18, competed for Team USA along with 24-year-old Mirai Nagasu and 20-year-old Bradie Tennell.

All three have been national champions at one point or another, but none of them skated cleanly in the individual event, held over two days in Gangneung, South Korea. Chen finished 11th, Nagasu 10th and Tennell came in ninth, only a small change from how they were positioned after the short program on Wednesday heading into Friday’s free skate.

Alina Zagitova and Evgenia Medvedeva, Olympic athletes from Russia, took gold and silver, while Canada’s Kaetlyn Osmond earned bronze.

It was a stark reversal of the results in skating team event nearly two weeks ago, when the U.S. earned bronze in part thanks to Tennell and, even more so, Nagasu.

Keep Following PEOPLE’s Complete Coverage of the 2018 Winter Olympics

Perhaps the brightest hope for the Americans in the women’s individual event was that Nagasu would land the tricky triple axel jump, having made history when she did so in the earlier skating team event at the Games. She was the first American woman to pull off such a feat at the Olympics.

But Nagasu fell on her second try, in her short program earlier this week, and appeared to change her mind about a third attempt on Friday while she was mid-leap, in what is called “popping” a jump.

While U.S. figure skaters have historically been dominant in the women’s individual event — earning 23 of its 75 medals since the modern Olympics began a century ago — no American has made it onto the podium there since 2006. The last gold-medal winner was Sarah Hughes, in 2002.

Such a decline has been the subject of much scrutiny within the sport, with one of the most recent contributions coming from the women’s 1998 Olympic gold medalist, Tara Lipinski.

She wrote in a New York Times column on Monday about how figure skating needs to be reworked to encourage female skaters to be more technically adventurous at a younger age, so as to keep pace with competitors in Japan, Russia and elsewhere.

But that will be for the future. On Friday, the U.S. women’s skaters each spoke with reporters about their Olympic performances.

Nagasu spoke candidly and with mixed emotions about her three Olympic skates in Korea, including that early medal win.

“I saved the team event with Adam and the Shibutanis. We were about to lose our medal,” she said before pulling her bronze out of her jacket. “So today I put my medal in my pocket — here she is — and I said, ‘Mirai, you’ve done your job already and this is all just icing.’ And it has been so emotionally draining, but this is what I wanted.”

“I’m proud of what I did,” she said, adding, “Maybe it won’t be enough for another person or maybe someone else could have done a better job, but I didn’t back down. And although I got zero points for my attempt at the triple axel, in my mind I went for it, so it’s unfortunate that I hit a rut today. But I’m proud of what I did.”

Asked why it seemed the American women could no longer handle a strong Olympic performance, Nagasu pushed back at the question. She noted that Canada’s Gabrielle Daleman, who earned a gold medal in the team event last week, also had a weak free skate on Friday.

Nagasu then began speaking more broadly about her experience at these Games, which opened with that exciting team-medal win and then … kept going.

“I love competing as part of a team,” she said. “But also it’s been a long, long journey, and we’ve had so many other commitments and you know — I wouldn’t change it for the world. We went to the Team USA House on the lunar holiday out here and it took four hours just to get to the mountain. And I also haven’t taken a warm shower because there are a lot of people on Team USA and somehow I keep trying to take a shower when all the hot water is gone.”

“But at the same time, I wanted this. I wanted to be here and I’m so happy,” Nagasu continued. “I also can’t wait to go home and put my medal around the kids’ necks at home and tell them that they can do it too, if they persevere. And I hope there are better, brighter things to come, and I hope that I get more opportunities to let my personality just shine.”

Chen, too, spoke of the drain and disorientation of competing in the Olympics.

“It was all so brand new and so different, and the biggest change for me was not being able to see my mom 24/7 and for me that was something that I really missed,” she said.

She began to cry as she described what her mom’s support has meant to her so far.

“I wanted this moment to be very special and I wanted it to be a great moment for both of us and for my family that’s been here,” Chen said. “And I’m just extremely thankful that she’s been at my side through all this time and she’s part of the reason why I’m here today.”

Echoing Nagasu, Tennell said the experience of these Games had been “very exhausting,” and like Chen she said being separated from her mother was challenging.

“Having to compete in the team event so early and then having to wait like two weeks almost is — it was very, very mentally and physically trying,” she said. “Seeing all these other athletes finish their events and be able to let loose a little bit and then us having to stay focused, it was definitely a challenge.”

Of questions about how U.S. skaters can change to compete more effectively at the international level, Tennell tells PEOPLE, “I can’t speak for everybody, but for me I’m sticking around and I’m going to work as hard as I possibly can to bring us up in the rankings.”

She said, “I think anything’s possible, with hard work and determination.”

Are Cheryl and Liam Payne breaking up, are they married and what really happened at 2018 Brit Awards?

CHERYL and Liam Payne went public with their romance in 2016 and welcomed baby son Bear in March 2017.

After it was revealed their relationship was in crisis, the couple put on a united front at Tuesday’s Brit Awards. Yet just 24 hours, Liam left Cheryl to fly to Miami. Here’s the lowdown on what’s going on..

Could Cheryl and Liam really be about to split?

Less than 24 hours after putting on a united front at the Brit Awards 2018, Liam was back on the road again and jetted out to Miami – leaving Cheryl and baby Bear at home.

The couple had walked the red carpet together at the awards bash on Tuesday, despite their relationship crisis.

Cheryl was there to support boyfriend Liam Payne who performed his song For You from the new Fifty Shades Freed film on stage with Rita Ora.

The couple were interviewed at their table by host Jack Whitehall during which Cheryl jokingly revealed her ‘safe word’.

Later on the presenter made a cheeky quip about Liam and Rita’s hot ‘chemistry’ after a steamy performance.

However, on February 18, 2018 The Sun on Sunday revealed that despite holding crisis talks about the future of their relationship, pals fear the showbiz couple could be on the verge of splitting.

The 10-year age gap between the two and Liam’s pursuit of a solo career are the main reasons believed to be behind the rumours.

A source close to the couple revealed: “There’s a big age gap between them. If they didn’t have Bear then they would have most likely split up by now.

“But they love their son. And they do care for each other so it’s now a matter of seeing if there’s a final way forward to try and make it work.”

What were the marriage rumours?

In May 2017 Liam sparked rumours he and Cheryl had secretly wed after he described her as his “wife” during a US radio interview.

Meanwhile, Cheryl, 34, has already been married twice before, and according to OK! Magazine, “doesn’t want a circus” if and when she weds Liam.

In July 2017 Liam was forced to finally admit that he hasn’t married Cheryl, saying he merely refers to Cheryl as “the Mrs” in a colloquial sense.

Liam subsequently hinted he may never marry Cheryl as he says “weddings aren’t for him”.

Who was Cheryl married to before?

The former Girls Aloud singer first tied the knot with footballer Ashley Cole in 2006 but the couple split in 2010 following allegations Ashley had been unfaithful.

Their divorce was granted in September of that year.

Cheryl then went on to marry businessman Jean-Bernard Fernandez-Versini in July 2014 after a whirlwind three-month romance.

However the marriage fell apart and after months of speculation, the split was confirmed in January 2016 and the couple were granted a decree nisi in October.

The singer was also married to Frenchman Jean-Bernard Fernandez-Versini from 2014 until she filed for divorce in January 2016

Who did Liam date before meeting Cheryl?

Being 10 years younger than Cheryl, Liam doesn’t have quite the relationship history of his girlfriend but did have some significant relationships before they got together.

The singer dated dancer Danielle Peazer from October 2010 until May 2013.

He then quickly moved on to a new relationship with Sophia Smith, who he had known since primary school.

The couple dated until October 2015, just weeks before he got together with Cheryl.

How did Cheryl and Liam Payne meet?

The pair first met all the way back in 2008 on the set of the X Factor, where 14-year-old Liam’s first audition earns him praise from his future partner, as well as calling him “cute”.

Liam returned to the show in 2010 as a 16-year-old and became part of One Direction, impressing Cheryl with his talents once again.

The pair are believed to have become a couple in December 2015 after One Direction performed on the X Factor for the final time, with the couple snapped sharing a hug and dancing together.

The Sun then exclusively confirmed their relationship in February 2016.

The pair first met in 2008 when Liam, then 14, auditioned for The X Factor and winked at her

What have Cheryl and Liam Payne called their baby boy?

The Sun revealed on May 1, 2017 that the couple named their son Bear after spending a week getting to know him.

Baby Bear also took his One Direction star dad’s surname.

A source revealed: “Cheryl and Liam wanted to get to know their baby before deciding on a name.

“They didn’t have the name Bear before the birth.

“But they’d been thinking of a name since meeting him and they just felt it suited him.

“They love their little baby Bear Payne and are truly over the moon and loving being parents for the first time together.”

Liam has opened up on “making a human” with Cheryl – calling it his proudest achievement.

Has Cheryl changed her name back to her maiden name?

Cheryl’s surname has changed many times over the years, due to her being married twice.

First she was Cheryl Tweedy (her maiden name) , then she changed it to Cheryl Cole when she married Ashley Cole, then she was Cheryl Fernandez Versini, during her short=lived marriage to Jean-Bernard Fernandez-Versini.

After she divorced the Frenchman she simply went by”Cheryl”.

Now, The Sun can reveal that she has officially changed her name back to Cheryl Tweedy.

‘Drag Race All Stars’: Chad and Alaska Return for Revenge but with Only 3 Queens

This week’s episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race went off with very few surprises. That is until Mama Ru summoned Chad and Alaska to return in their handmaid costumes in preparation to reveal the season’s big twist.

Just before the return of the past All Stars winners, it was Bebe Zahara Bonet and Trixie Mattel lip syncing for their legacy in the Top 2 — wins that both of them desperately needed.

Trixie was supposed to be the frontrunner heading into the season but remained safe every episode so far until last week when she was nearly eliminated. (Trixie fans are still recovering from Shangela’s fakeout last week though, so we won’t dwell on it!)

Meanwhile, Bebe returned to the workroom to compete after winning the first ever season of Drag Race, so she had a lot to prove in order to not jeopardize her legacy. But after failing to deliver anything special or memorable week after week, she really needed a win to prove she deserved to be here.

So after an Andy Warhol-inspired runway in which our queens had to both make their own Studio 54 costume and decorate a giant can of soup, Trixie and Bebe finally landed on top. And it was Aja and Shangela (fresh off a win the week before), who faced elimination.

Bebe won the lip sync and sent Aja home. And, despite getting a huge redemption after doing poorly in Season 9, it certainly seemed more reasonable than getting rid of Shangela. The Hallelloo queen has been killing it this season and already has two wins under her belt — no easy feat with BenDeLaCreme around!

Aja actually helped Bebe sew her dress, so to then be sent home by her has got to sting. But there was no time for tears because, after teases left us waiting in anticipation all season long, RuPaul finally called Chad and Alaska back to the stage.

The OG All Stars have been stalking our contestants in their Handmaid’s Tale outfits all season long and have finally been called upon to reveal the twist they have up their long red sleeves.

When Ru asks the queens how many of her eliminated girls they were able to capture, three queens returned to the stage. And while their faces were covered by their bonnets, we’re led to believe that these are previously eliminated contestants who have returned for their revenge.

But the gag is, there were only three queens on stage, but it’s actually five who have gone home. So who wasn’t invited back? And what does it all mean?

Previews for next week showed Ru declaring that they were here for their revenge, but are they actually coming to compete? Or are they just here to shake things up by somehow throwing a wrench into the competition?

And what about the widely spread rumor that Bebe is a mole? Many people thought she may have been spying on the other contestants for Ru this whole time and would join the eliminated queens in helping to vote off one of the contestants. But Bebe’s win tonight would feel like a waste if she wasn’t really playing the game (Trixie could have had that!) and the reveal likely would have happened as this week’s cliffhanger.

Instead, we’re left with more questions than answers heading into next week, but it’s exciting to know we’ll finally find out the big shocker of the season.

And while you super sleuths put on your detective caps to try to figure out what Chad and Alaska are up to, don’t forget that the Season 10 queens were also announced at the end of the All Stars episode. Head here to read our break down of the upcoming cast and then head to Twitter to let us know what you think next week’s big All Stars twist will be.

Luke Pell Ghosted Stassi After ‘The Bachelor Winter Games’

After The Bachelor Winter Games finale, the World Tells All reunion featured an update on all of the couples! Here’s everything that went down on the Thursday, February 22, special:

Courtney Dober and Lily McManus
The New Zealand and Australian stars found love immediately in the house and were still inseparable on the reunion show. After the show, they got an RV and took a road trip across America. Now, they’re both living in Los Angeles!

Lesley Murphy and Dean Unglert
The couple exchanged “I love yous” before Dean got down on one knee. However, he did not propose. Instead, he told her that with all of her traveling, he wanted her to have a place to call home. So, he asked if she would “accept this key to my house.” She said yes.

Luke Pell and Stassi Yaramchuk
After the show, Stassi went back to Sweden and Luke went back to Nashville. However, she was shocked when he never, ever, reached out in the two months since filming. “It seemed so real,” she told Chris Harrison before Luke came out from backstage. When Luke was brought out, she actually shook his hand, making it clear she didn’t know who he was. He had no explanation for ghosting her, just continually saying “yeah” when she tried to ask how he could just act like they were nothing after the cameras stopped.

Ashley Iaconetti and Kevin Wendt
These two are still going strong, “digging each other.” She’s traveled to Canada, he’s gone to Los Angeles many times and they’ve gone to Boston together. She’s a diehard Giants fan and she accepts that he’s crazy about Tom Brady … it must be love. They did not reveal what happened in the fantasy suite and ultimately, she doesn’t plan on it.

Clare Crawley and … Benoit!
Clare went home solo after Winter Games, turning down Benoit Beauséjour-Savard when he told her he was falling for her. She then tried to see if it’d work with Christian Rauch, but there was a disconnect. However, when she got home, she had a message from Benoit, they started dating. On World Tells All, he proposed and she said yes!

For Bisexual Black Girls Who Didn’t Know Janelle Monáe Was Going to Create Their Anthem Today

YouTube/Screenshot

Thursday, Feb. 22, 2018. Remember that date. It marks a historic moment in your beautifully intersectional identity as a bisexual Black woman.

Perhaps you didn’t know this day was going to be anything beyond the 53rd day of 2018–and another dreaded day under the 45th president. But on said day, you watched Janelle Monáe’s music video for Make Me Feel. It was the antithesis to everything that gives the White House and 46.1 percent of Americans a fright: queers, Blacks and queer Blacks.

Monáe simultaneously dropped the music video alongside the visuals for her other newly released single, Django Jane.

Once you were done watching the Django Jane video, you surely didn’t think it could get more enthralling than a rapping Monáe. You thought you’d walk away from Thursday having only gained a bomb Black female empowerment anthem. (Which is still spectacularly uplifting in its own right–but you simply didn’t expect your sexual preferences to also get a four-minute shout-out as well).

Make Me Feel is a love ballad that’s already inspired comparisons to pop legend Prince. While that’s immensely respectable and all, we don’t care to pay attention to that aspect. Not today. Because today we saw what is arguably the most feminized and sexualized Monáe you’d ever seen. And she’s seductively shimmying as she puts on for your ever-so-fluctuating sexuality.

Throughout the video, Monáe unapologetically embodies bisexuality. When she simultaneously teases her goodies to a random man and Tessa Thompson, she emboldens those of us who have found that our attractions weren’t dictated by anatomical make-up. For those who are or were once perplexed by the absence of an actual sexual preference, the video is affirming.

Make Me Feel draws from one of the most iconic episodes of Netflix’s Black Mirror series in which two women find eternal love upon meeting younger versions of themselves. It’s the series’ queerest episode, a unique love story and it makes the video all the more powerful. But aside from simply representing for bisexual Black girls, there’s another element about the artist that makes these visuals even more empowering: Monáe has never declared her sexuality, so it may be safe to say the reclusive 32-year-old isn’t using sexual preferences as a marketing ploy. She’s simply expressing herself. And that (plus equality) is all the LGBT community has ever wanted.

Watch the Make Me Feel video below:

It’s On Sale: Denim Repairs

Ever since the raw denim revival has blown up in the US, dozens of specialty repair shops have cropped up to help people preserve their favorite pair of jeans. Denim is a hardy fabric, but – when worn day-in, day-out – even the best-made jeans will start wearing thin. And, at some point, they’ll develop holes.

I get my jeans repaired about once a year at Denim Therapy. They’re just one of the many shops nowadays that specialize in something known as darning, which is where a seamstress covers up a hole by essentially “weaving” in new material. The result is sturdier than a simple patch job – which is what you’ll get at a more common alterations tailor – and when done with matching threads, it’ll look a lot less conspicuous. Which is good for areas like, you know, your crotch.

At the moment, Denim Therapy is offering a 15% discount on all reweaving repairs. If you’re outside of NYC and can’t drop your jeans off at their shop, you’ll have to mail them in. For a basic repair, as well as the cost of shipping back and forth, you can expect to pay between $ 50 and $ 75. That’s about the price of entry-level raw denim nowadays, but this way, you get to wear your favorite pair of jeans a bit longer. And like with good leather shoes, the charm of denim is all about how the material looks as it ages.

Note, in order to get the discount, your jeans have to be in their shop by March 9th. If you’re mailing these in, factor in a week for shipping. You can also see this post for some examples of things I’ve had done at Denim Therapy

Reebok’s Todd Krinsky Heads Up New Performance Business Unit

A MEASURED PERFORMANCE: Like other, more established athletic brand competitors, Reebok’s heritage is rooted in performance and now the company has set up a division dedicated to that — the Reebok Performance Business Unit.
At the helm of that sector is 25-year company veteran Todd Krinsky who has been named general manager. The brand’s running and training business units have been consolidated into its new Performance Business Unit. Fittingly, Krinsky earned his post for his own performance as general manager of Reebok’s Classic Business Unit. Leading that business, he helped to generate double-digit percentage gains for year-on-year growth over the past six years. Krinsky reports to Reebok president Matt O’Toole.
Big-name branding has been a key part of Reebok’s Classic Business’ upward climb. Gigi Hadid is the latest celebrity to appear in Reebok’s “Always Classic” campaign. With the spring campaign, the IMG model joined the ranks of Ariana Grande, Rae Sremmurd, Teyana Taylor, Lil Yachty, K-pop star Somi, street artists Felipe Pantone and SANY and model Sharina Gutierrez. Oprah Pledges $500,000 To Support Florida Students’ Call for Gun Control

Oprah Winfrey tweeted Tuesday that she is “joining forces” with George and Amal Clooney in support of the upcoming “March for Our Lives” demonstration by donating half a million dollars to the pro-gun control effort.

The march, which will take place in Washington, D.C., on March 24, was organized in wake of the mass shooting at a Florida high school on Valentine’s Day that left 17 dead. News reports revealed that the alleged gunman, Nikolas Cruz, 19, is a white nationalist and Trump supporter. A motive, however, has not been confirmed.

In the aftermath of the horrific shooting, survivors at the school are advocating for stricter gun laws that would prevent teenagers like Cruz, who has a history of mental illness, from accessing semi-automatic weapons like the AR-15 used in the massacre.

On Tuesday, a Twitter account controlled by the student survivors thanked the Clooneys for donating $ 500,000 to their cause.

Hours later, Winfrey pledged to match the Clooney’s donation. The 64-year-old media mogul also compared the #NeverAgain movement to Freedom Riders who took bold actions to combat racism during the Civil Rights era while the government remained inactive in enforcing desegregation in the South.

Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw have also made sizable donations to March For Our Lives, which will be led by students in honor of the lives that were lost. The mission of the march “is to demand that a comprehensive and effective bill be brought before Congress to address these gun issues. No special interest group, no political agenda is more critical than the timely passage of legislation to effectively address the gun violence issues that are rampant in our country,” reads the website.

Despite pleas for stricter gun control, Florida legislators voted overwhelmingly on Tuesday not to ban assault rifles. Instead, they approved a bill designed “to protect Floridians, especially teenagers, from pornography.”

‘Age of Empires: Definitive Edition’ Restores a Classic for The Modern Age

History waits for no one — and over 20 years after its original release, Age of Empires has received the HD retouching this classic truly deserves.

Following on the footsteps of Age of Empires II HD, Age of Empires: Definitive Edition pulls the origins of the highly influential Age of Empires series into the modern age, with thorough graphical and UI improvements.

For players who’ve been with the series since the beginning, it’s a gorgeous re-rendering of the classic game. For newer players, curious about the origins of the series, it’s an enlightening experience that also showcases the game’s weaknesses compared to modern real-time strategy games.

The Age of Empires series tasks players with developing a civilization from a small, hunter-gatherer society to an expansive Iron Age Empire. The path to success is found by gathering resources, building structures that lead to more advanced technology, and conquering other nations.

The name of the game is micromanaging the development of your nation, and the flow of gameplay has changed little with Age of Empires: Definitive Edition – which will either delight or upset players depending on the experience they may be searching for.

Players can choose between a wide variety of different civilizations: Egyptians, Assyrians, Greeks, Persians, to name a few, and lead their civilization to the heights of a new Golden Age. Each nation state has their own unique perks, but these perks are mostly passive and are rooted in the same playstyle. This welcoming system makes it easy for players to try out different civilizations but might not bring enough customization to players looking for clearer playstyle distinctions.

Age of Empires: Definitive Edition-Town
The Age Of Empires of 2018 is a far cry from the blurred polygons of yesteryear.

The Remastered version of Age of Empires brings a plethora of changes. The graphical style of the game has been updated from the jagged pixel art of 1997 into full 3D models. An ‘attack-move’ feature has been added (units will auto-attack anything in their path while moving), and a ton of balance adjustments paired with the game’s many civilization types.

The biggest game-changing improvement of the Definitive Edition is the increased population limit. This allows more units to be created, civilian or military types, to perform more actions simultaneously.

The game received a significant rework on the sound design as well, with a remastered soundtrack and sound effects. The original Age of Empires soundtrack is regarded as one of the best of the time, and the restoration does it justice. New unit voices were also recorded (a new wololo!).

The cleaner UI makes hopping through menus a breeze. All of these improvements are welcome. But for those purists looking to forgo all these changes, you can enable Classic Mode to play the game in its original 1997 state.

Old Habits Die Hard

Age of Empires: Definitive Edition-Fight
While there’s not much new here, the increased population limit allows players to orchestrate some wonderfully epic battles.

It’s worth noting that while these improvements clean up the Age of Empires experience significantly, the true nuts-and-bolts of the game are unchanged. Some of the archaic elements of the original are still present – including the poor pathfinding on unit commands.

Pathfinding has significantly improved across the real-time strategy genre, and players familiar with modern offerings will immediately notice the lack of polish in this realm. You will need to lead some units by the hand, for nothing is worse than watching your warriors clumsy run into each other, dooming your attack. Sometimes units idling in your base will stand around in the midst of a major attack, and will only react if enemy units get close enough.

There is little true strategy in Age of Empires’ combat – besides fine-tuning your unit grouping, a fight consists of little more than clicking your units into combat and hoping for the best. Chances of success can be improved by carefully tweaking your units as the fight unfolds, but this is a skill that’s learned more through muscle memory and practice, as opposed to learning some grand strategy.

The inclusion of online multiplayer can give Age of Empires: Definitive Edition plenty of life well after you clear the game’s many single player campaigns. However, we found hiccups in the online experience in the handful of matches we played.

Outside of some occasional lag, losing a player can sometimes result in the match completely ending due to minor connection errors. The customizable options of online play can lead to some pretty unique matches, so thankfully a few connection problems don’t deter from the enjoyment of battling other players.

Is ‘Age of Empires: Definitive Edition’ Good?

Age of Empires: Definitive Edition-Civilization
It may be simplistic, but this game still oozes charm by the bucketload.

It’s a little unorthodox to see a remaster of the original game after the remaster of its sequel. Age of Empires II HD has been out for nearly five years and is widely considered to be the more well-rounded experience. For this reason alone, a remaster of the original Age of Empires is much more suitable for players of the original experience than newer players. Why should new players go back further than they need to when a widely-acclaimed sequel is already available?

But that being said, there is still something incredibly addictive about the original Age of Empires experience. Once players get settled into their micro-tasking, seeing your civilization blossom from nothing into a sprawling metropolis is magical. The progressions through the different technological ages constantly bring a level of excitement for the use of new technology and units.

Age of Empires: Definitive Edition is a must-play for series vets looking to recapture the nostalgia of their first RTS experience, and well worth a look for new players looking to understand the roots of the RTS genre.

Postcards from shithole countries is the best response to Trump’s latest remarks

Killing it with kindness…

shithole country
Zanzibar Island, Tanzania

When Donald Trump reportedly branded Haiti, El Salvador, and all African nations as “shithole countries” and questioned why America should permit their citizens to enter the country, it sent shockwaves around the world. The African Union, which represents 55 nations deemed the comments “clearly racist” and both the UN and the Vatican released statements condemning the offensive rhetoric.

During a meeting with lawmakers, aides told The Washington Post that Trump had reportedly said: “Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?” The White House did not deny the account and instead acknowledged that Trump’s stance – as it has been throughout his entire campaign and presidency – is hardline. To which one might argue, when did hardline become so out of line?

Now, Instagram has responded in brilliantly bold fashion, with people around the world posting the most epic shots from their so-called ‘shithole countries’. In a serious middle finger to Mr Trump’s comments, it is a show of defiance that we can all get on-board with.

More postcards from shithole countries followed, from South Africa, to Haiti, to El Salvador and everywhere in between. The hashtags #shitholecountry #shitholecountries and #shitholepresident gathered pace, as people shared the love instead of the hate alongside their Insta shots of ‘shithole’ countries to remind us just how beautiful the world is, despite the challenges it continues to face. Loot Box Debate Raged Inside Hi-Rez Studios – Report

The Paladins Cards Unbound update back in November was a controversial one, to say the least. It made major changes to the way the game’s stat-boosting cards are obtained and used, angering many of its players — and according to one source within developer Hi-Rez Studios (who reached out to me under the condition that they remain anonymous), the update was just as controversial within the studio as well.
