Abasi Rosborough Men’s Spring 2019

In their sophomore showing during New York Fashion Week: Men’s, Abdul Abasi and Greg Rosborough explored a desert phantom theme that referenced a variety of vanishing cultures and tribes.
The design duo paraded a diverse range, from kimono-inspired jackets and coats and fitted cargo pants to Navajo-printed parkas. The color palette included deep burgundies and burnt orange that brought an Eastern sensibility to the forefront, while a flowing white section telegraphed the desert inspiration. “We even looked at ‘Lawrence of Arabia,’” Rosborough noted.
A wrinkled cotton hybrid poncho with matching head scarf and an ethereal topcoat in the same fabric also drove the desert theme home. Likewise, a Tencel linen that was frayed to look old — employed for bomber jackets and coats — reinforced that worn-in traveler vibe.
With this effort, Abasi Rosborough continues to make its mark in men’s fashion. “We’ve seen an exodus of big designers this week, but we look at it as an opportunity for new designers to step forward,” Rosborough said.

Fans Will Be Able to Pay Tribute to Aretha Franklin Before Her Funeral Later This Month

Before Aretha Franklin is laid to rest at the end of August, the beloved singer’s fans will get a chance to pay their respects during two public viewings.

Franklin’s publicist tells PEOPLE that the Queen of Soul’s funeral will take place on Friday, Aug. 31 at Greater Grace Temple in Detroit.

While the ceremony — slated to begin at 10 a.m. — will be strictly limited to friends and family of the late singer, fans will still have a chance to honor her a few days earlier.

On Aug. 28 and 29, public viewings will be held at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. On both days, fans will be able to pay their respects from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Following the funeral service, Franklin will be laid to rest at Woodlawn Cemetery.

“Aretha Franklin will be entombed at Woodlawn Cemetery in Detroit, Michigan, along with her father, Rev. C.L. Franklin; brother Cecil Franklin; sisters Carolyn Franklin and Erma Franklin; and nephew, Thomas Garrett,” her rep tells PEOPLE.

The announcement comes just one day after Franklin died from advanced pancreatic cancer of the neuroendocrine type at the age of 76.

“In one of the darkest moments of our lives, we are not able to find the appropriate words to express the pain in our heart. We have lost the matriarch and rock of our family. The love she had for her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins knew no bounds,” the family said in a statement.

“We have been deeply touched by the incredible outpouring of love and support we have received from close friends, supporters and fans all around the world. Thank you for your compassion and prayers. We have felt your love for Aretha and it brings us comfort to know that her legacy will live on. As we grieve, we ask that you respect our privacy during this difficult time.”

9 Reasons Dressing Down Is Overrated

Recently, my wife showed me a post about 10 things why dressing up is overrated and if you’re a regular follower of the Gentleman’s Gazette, you probably know that I would not agree with that statement.

That being said, I do dress down on occasion which means I dress less formally than I usually do. The basic arguments in that article were that one, it costs money and two, it wastes time, and three, that it panders to what other people think of you rather than what you think of yourself.

I think there is real value in not caring what other people think of you because oftentimes, it can just cloud your judgment and you just live for other people rather than yourself. There is a limited usefulness to that attitude. Men’s Wearhouse had a survey and almost 3 out of 4 men felt that they are underdressed all the time. If you’re in that state of mind when you’re not dressed up to par, you simply lack a certain element of confidence. Being confident is a very important factor in how you’re perceived, how people think of you, and ultimately, where you end up in life.

The truth is we live in a society, we don’t live in a vacuum just for ourselves, and the way you dress and the way you appear to others has a huge impact whether you want it or not. The truth is also that it does cost some money to dress up. Even if you do have to spend a little more, it really pays to look at it more of an investment rather than an expense.

Why are we paying money for clothes to be considered an investment? Well, if you get a classic wardrobe that you can wear for many years to come, the cost per wear is very little. At the same time, when people see you, they think of you more highly, they respect you more, and they deem you more competent, it will have a direct impact on your paycheck.

Nine Reasons Why Being Underdressed Is Overrated

1. People Won’t Take You Seriously

As a consequence, you won’t take yourself as seriously and you will think that you can’t achieve certain things even though you could do them. No matter the situation, dressing well gives you an air of authority and it usually means dressing up. Yale conducted an interesting study of mock real estate negotiations; they had men dressed up, dressed neutral, and dressed down. The men who dressed down felt at a disadvantage from the get-go and ultimately, they lost more money and deferred more money to the people who were better dressed.

Interestingly, the well-dressed men sensed this insecurity and they were less likely to budge, they maintained their position, and they walked away with a much better position than the people who were dressed down or dressed neutrally. Interestingly, the professor of that study noted that animals respond to signals of dominance and for humans, it certainly is the business suit.

Mark Zuckerberg in a suit

You may argue that some of the richest men in the world are extremely dressed down such as Mark Zuckerberg. At the same time, when Mark Zuckerberg appears or when an article is written about him, oftentimes, people refer to the fact that he’s dressed down a lot so it almost taints his accomplishment in a certain way. Even if that’s not the case, it’s a distraction, at the least. At the last congressional hearing, he showed up in a suit, people noticed and it was a signal that said “I’m taking this very seriously”, so by dressing up, you can purvey this kind of message that you respect others and in turn, they will respect you more.

2. People Who Dress Up Make More Money Over The Course Of Their Career

Think about it, if your boss doesn’t take you seriously and if he doesn’t respect your work, why would he promote you? Even if you don’t believe the studies and think that it the workplace has changed, 75% of men think that their well-dressed counterparts are more successful in their jobs.

3. You Look Less Attractive

You can’t change your physical features aside from working out and even if you work out, the fact remains that if you wear a suit or if you dress up, if you dress well, you will always look better than the equivalent person in a t-shirt and sweatpants. So yes, it’s true! Most people would probably argue that Daniel Craig in a t-shirt looks better and I do in a suit and they’re quite right.

Daniel Craig wearing a t-shirt

Daniel Craig wearing a t-shirt

At the same time, I’m arguing that Daniel Craig in a suit would look even better than Daniel Craig in a t-shirt. Also, the good thing is you can take action and change your clothes and will likely be a lot quicker than changing your bodily physique. If that is not enough for you, 78% of the women in a survey said that they prefer men who dress well.

4. Dressing Down Will Keep You From Doing Things

When you wear sweatpants and a t-shirt, you don’t feel it’s appropriate to go out on the street so you just stay in, hang out on the couch, order pizza and watch Netflix. In my opinion, your clothes should not hold you back, they should help you move forward. Honestly, these days, all it takes is a pair of chinos, a dress shirt, nice leather shoes, and you’re probably prepared for most of the situations out there. If you want to put on a sport coat or a blazer, you are better dressed than 90% of the men you’ll encounter.

5. Dressing Down Makes You Look Lazy

Yes, it’s easy and cheap to buy a pair of t-shirt and sweatpants, at the same time, that’s exactly the message you communicate “I’m cheap and lazy”.

6. What You Wear Is Not Just About You

Tom Ford once said that dressing well is a form of good manners and if you think about it, it’s a form of showing respect to others, it’s a form that you show respect for the event you’re at, and in turn, you will earn more respect from others for that. Just the other day, I read a comment from one of our YouTube viewers and he said that he was never as embarrassed before as when he had a business event with a co-worker and the co-worker showed up in a sports Jersey that was way too tight with a deep cut out and he just felt so embarrassed.

That probably had an impact on how he approached this meeting and I’m certain he could have achieved more if his colleague would have dressed up more. So whenever there is a dress code and you disregard it and dress down, it’s a sign of disrespect and not having those particular clothes is not a real good excuse because you could even rent a tuxedo or get an inexpensive one and put in a little effort.

7. Dressing Well Makes You Feel Confident & Powerful

In turn, that leads to you doing things that you otherwise might not have done if you were dressed down. It could be things like asking your boss for that raise or asking out that woman that you have a crush on. Putting on a nice suit has an effect on your posture, the way you walk, the way you talk, the way you look, and the way you interact, and who wouldn’t want to feel more confident and powerful?

8. Dressing Down Costs More In The Long Run

Yes, t-shirts are inexpensive and so are sweatpants, at the same time, they’re usually made of low-quality materials and so they wear out a lot more. That means you have to invest more time to go to the mall or to shop online and if you value your time, as well as the natural resources, dressing down and dressing cheaply is really not that cheap in the long run. Ultimately, you will just keep spending more and more money and it’s like a slot machine in Vegas. At the same time, you always look crappy. On the flipside, if you invest in a nice pair of shoes and you can resole it and wear it for 15 or 20 years down the line, you probably spend less if you consider the cost per wear of your shoes.

9. You Never Know Who You’re Going To Meet

A couple of years ago, I was on an airplane flight and when I travel, I always try to dress well, that means I wear a jacket, I wear some chinos, some leather shoes, I wear a bow tie or regular tie, and that really makes me better dressed than 99.9% of people who fly.

So it turned out, I was sitting next to a US bank executive, we were talking and I was telling him that I had a business and that was banking with US bank and recently, I’d applied for a credit line and they thought they could only give me $ 30,000. Two days later, I received an email from him and I had a credit line for $ 100,000 and my banker called me up and was like “Wow how did you do that?”, and all it took was being well dressed, sitting to the right person at the right time who looked at me and respected me and thought highly of me and believed that I was worth a credit line of $ 100,000.

Now, that’s not something you can plan for but ultimately, if you’re dressed up regularly, chances of you encountering situations where it will be to your advantage or much higher than if you just show up in sweatpants and a hoodie.

A hoodie does not make you look professional

A hoodie does not make you look professional

CONCLUSION

So in summary, dressing down makes you feel less confident, makes you feel less powerful, and it will earn you less money over the course of your career. It also doesn’t make you look intelligent or successful and as a consequence, people respect you less and think of you less highly. Yes it is true, dressing down may cost you less but compared to the earning potential of dressing up and the cost per wear, it actually may hurt your wallet.

Dolls Kill Arrives on Fairfax Avenue With Concept Shop

WELCOME TO FAIRFAX: Dolls Kill founders and husband-and-wife team Shaudi Lynn and Bobby Farahi saw a nice-looking space on Fairfax Avenue and went for it. The two on Saturday celebrate the grand opening of the company’s second store outside of their hometown of San Francisco, where they opened their first store in the Haight District a year ago.
The Los Angeles location, at 415 North Fairfax Avenue, is designed with an industrial nightclub in mind. To that end, the company imported a sound system from Italian custom audio equipment manufacturer Pequod Acoustics and played up the store’s gritty brick walls.
“Unlike the many retail stores that pop up all over L.A. in locations that over and over serve as some sort of clothing venue, our location on Fairfax had never been a storefront before,” said Shaudi Lynn in reference to the space’s past life as a mattress seller.
The store well exceeds the size of the company’s foray into retail with Fairfax totaling 6,000 square feet and dubbed a concept shop. San Francisco totals 1,100 square feet at 1475 Haight Street.
The Fairfax store’s assortment will include limited drops from the company’s proprietary labels Club Exx, Current Mood, Poster Girl, Widow and Sugar Thrillz

New Report Highlights House of Fraser’s Mounting Debt to Brands

LONDON — Trouble continues to mount at House of Fraser as a recent report by Ernst & Young, the professional services firm, cites that the retailer owes millions of pounds to its creditors, including major luxury brand partners.
The retail chain, which was bought on Friday morning by Sports Direct owner Mike Ashley, is indebted to a slew of retailers including Giorgio Armani, Mulberry and Kurt Geiger.
Kurt Geiger is owed 4.9 million pounds, Giorgio Armani 1.59 million pounds, Mulberry 2.4 million pounds, Warehouse 1.4 million pounds and J. Barbour 3 million pounds.
The news follows at the heels of a payment dispute between XPO Logistics, which runs two of HoF’s warehouses, and Sports Direct, who has stopped fulfilling orders for the retailer and who is owed 30.4 million pounds.
As a result, HoF shut down its web site, reportedly sitting on at least 50,000 unfulfilled online orders. XPO Logistics and Sports Direct could not be reached for comment.
The report also shows that HoF made a pretax loss of 4.1 million pounds for the year to Jan. 21, 2018 and in the first quarter to April 28, the retailer witnessed a 7.7 percent drop in turnover with earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization

This Week in Women: Calling Out Sex Abuse in the Church and the Classroom

Breaking the Silence on Sexual Abuse

In recent years, Pope Francis—head of the Roman Catholic Church and its 1.2 billion Catholics worldwide—has shown a willingness to reconsider divorce, shed light on the plight of poverty and question the church’s stance against homosexuality. However, his progressive outlook ends when it comes to women. As he has made clear, the discussion to extend the priesthood to women “is closed.”

On Tuesday, we shared outrage and horror at the tragic cost of that ongoing refusal: Details of more than 1,000 cases of child sex abuse were revealed by a 1,400 page Pennsylvania grand jury report. 300 priests stand accused, while others knew and failed to act. Most of the victims were young boys, but plenty were also girls and young women.

It’s hard to believe that sexual asceticism and celibacy rules have nothing to do with what’s going on here—along with a perverted male toxicity whose outlet isn’t in machismo, but rather shame, deviance and exploitation.

Meanwhile, Britons are grappling with comments indicating that 200 rapes occur each year in British schools. Laura Bates, the founder of The Everyday Sexism Project, said that widespread access to pornography was distorting boys’ understanding of women.

In the U.S., a former ICE agent is accused of sexually assaulting two women and telling them the police wouldn’t respond if they reported him because he was a member of law enforcement. He has pleaded not guilty. In Russia, a dramatic reduction in the number of domestic violence cases reported to police is attributed to a law passed last year that partially decriminalized abuse.

Other Stories From the Week

We send you into one of the final weekends of summer with a tribute to Aretha Franklin, who passed away on Thursday. Here are some of her most inspirational quotes.

What Went Wrong on Bruce Willis Bomb ‘Hudson Hawk’?

Hudson Hawk was a famously troubled production. The 1991 action-comedy — which starred Bruce Willis as a cat-burgler blackmailed into pulling off a series of heists all over Europe — went over both schedule and budget, largely thanks to a script that kept changing. The resulting film was critically mauled, and ended up being a bomb at the box office.

So nearly 30 years on, we spoke to the film’s co-screenwriter Steven De Souza, then to director Michael Lehmann, to find out what went wrong. And in their separate interviews, on the phone with De Souza, and more recently face-to-face with Lehmann, they have very different recollections.

Blaming Bruce Willis

Danny Aiello and Bruce Willis in Hudson Hawk.

De Souza: “Bruce took over the whole movie. Started re-writing it and directing it. The studio flew me over to Italy. I was there for five weeks. Every day I’d say ‘Has he stopped re-writing?’ and they’d say ‘No.’ And there was no way I was going to pull the pencil out of his hand. But they had me there in case I could undo what he was undoing.”

Lehmann: “I have a very different perspective on it than Steve. By the way Steve is great, he’s a great writer, and he wrote some fantastic movies. Steve wrote the original draft, and it was a very, very different movie. I think I worked with him for a few minutes on it, but didn’t do it with him as much as I did with Dan Waters, who came in to re-write…. and Bruce Willis was not rewriting the script, ever.”

Blaming the Villains

Richard E. Grant and Sandra Bernhard as the baddies.

De Souza: “The big problem with that movie; what really went wrong with it was when the villains got silly. Even at Disney. A Disney movie like Aladdin you can have the crazy parrot, but the villain is dead straight. So when the villains got goofy, that’s what really destroyed the movie. You can have as much fun as you want, but you’ve got to take the villains seriously.”

Lehmann: “The idea that the villains were not villains of the typical action movie type — of course! Our intention was to take that genre, and turn it upside down. I think Steve never really saw it that way. And to his credit it was never really presented to him as being that way. So he may be right in his assessment of it, but we were deliberately trying to go against the conventions of the genre while making fun of some of the conventions of the genre. Whether or not that worked is a question I can’t answer.”

Do the Filmmakers Like Hudson Hawk?

One of the film's expensive action sequences.

De Souza:Hudson Hawk deserved to get ripped. We all knew that.”

Lehmann: “Like the movie? I love all my children, you know? I love them all equally. But Hudson Hawk was a difficult experience to make, famously, and I really do like a lot of what we were able to get into it. Am I supposed to agree with many critics that the movie’s a failure? No I wouldn’t look at it that way. But are there things I’d like to have different in the movie? Of course.”

Will There Ever Be a Hudson Hawk 2?

De Souza [laughing]: “I think you can probably chalk that one off. I don’t know if that one will ever get a second look.”

Lehmann [shaking his head]: “Would you like to finance that?”

Producer Who Worked With Franklin Recalls Great Performances

NEW YORK (AP) — When Ken Ehrlich, the longtime producer of the Grammys and other awards shows, worked with the Obama administration on a concert honoring women at the White House, first lady Michelle Obama laid down one rule.

“You aren’t doing a tribute to women in my house without Aretha Franklin,” Ehrlich recalls Obama telling him.

And so Franklin — a longtime friend of Ehrlich — was added to the 2014 “Women of Soul” bill, which included Patti LaBelle, Ariana Grande, Janelle Monae and Tessanne Chin. Despite those illustrious names and subsequent rousing performances, it was Franklin who of course stole the show. In her closing performance, Franklin performed Amazing Grace — while wearing a fur coat — and took the White House to church with a foot-stomping, hand-clapping rendition that continued even after show officially ended.

“When she got going, and she was in the spirit, which she would get when she was singing gospel . you could start her, but stopping her was an entirely different story,” Ehrlich said by phone on Thursday, hours after learning of Franklin’s death at the age of 76.

That moment was just one of the magical moments Ehrlich helped orchestrate with Franklin over the years. The most famous, certainly, was when Ehrlich was producing the Grammys in 1998 and Luciano Pavarotti was scheduled to sing Nessun Dorma during the broadcast — but then bowed out due to illness just as the show was about to air live.

Ehrlich quickly started running through the many performers on hand who could fill the time — he first thought of asking Stevie Wonder to do something amazing, as Wonder is known to do. But then Ehrlich recalled Franklin had performed at a tribute concert to Pavarotti two nights earlier, and sung Nessun Dorma. She was already due to do a short performance of Respect for a “Blues Brothers” anniversary number — perhaps she would fill in for the famed opera tenor?

So he went to Franklin’s cramped dressing room — she had a small one because she was not the main performer — and interrupting her fried chicken dinner to make his last-minute request.

“I think I said, ‘How would you like to sing twice tonight?’” he recalled. “Then there was a silence, and she said, ‘OK, I’ll do it.”

Just before she went on stage, Ehrlich remembers her squeezing his hand and saying to him, “This is gonna be fun.”

It was more than fun: It became one of her greatest performances, part of music history, and added to her already legendary status, with the Queen of Soul so deftly performing the famous aria.

The next day, Ehrlich and Franklin spoke in an emotional phone call that had them both on the verge of tears.

“She said, ‘I knew this was going to be something different, but I didn’t know it would be so great,’” Ehrlich remembers.

Ehrlich produced other Grammy shows and events that featured Franklin performances. He praised her musicianship. A dazzling piano player in her own right, she only wanted the best performing with her, particularly on drums.

“If you weren’t with her timewise, she’d let you have it,” he recalled.

One of his favorite performances was one he orchestrated with Elton John in 1993, where the two played on opposite pianos and performed John’s Border Song — a mesmerizing duet.

Ehrlich said years after that — including this year — when he and John spoke, one of them would always say, “Remember that night with Aretha?”

Ehrlich said no matter what happens in music, Franklin will always be the model that singers and musicians would look to for excellence.

“People are gonna be trying their hardest to both remember her and wanna do what she did” he said. “I’ve seen it all my life now. I saw it with Whitney, I see it with Beyonce . I see it with Carrie Underwood . I see it with every genre. . I think both men and women, but women particularly, will be singing those songs.”

He added: “Just the being that was Aretha Franklin will go on forever.”

How Fenty Beauty Empowers Black Women

There’s a good chance you’ve heard about Fenty Beauty. After all, every girl around the block has!

Rihannas original cosmetic collection was released in September 2017 and since then it has changed the tide of the beauty industry.

More than RiRi’s popularity, the brand garnered attention for its inclusivity as it outsold all other brands by catering to women of all skin tones. The brand’s trademark product is the foundation the Pro Filt’r foundation that offers not ten or twenty shades of skin tones!

Instagram Photo

But rather it breaks all boundaries and offers 40 different shades of foundation for the women who had previously been ostracized by the beauty market.T his ‘beauty for all’ motto has hit all the right chords in the consumers!

Why are African-American women feeling empowered by Fenty Beauty?

Now the men reading this may roll their eyes and think this is just makeup. However, we would like to tell you that it may be just makeup for you but for the average women of color, this opens doors to a whole new world. Women with deep tones have finally found a product that speaks to them.

Here are the many reasons why this product matters:

The Campaign

True to her word, RiRi showed the world that she is not ‘all talk’. The brand advertisement steered clear of whitewashing the models and presenting a diverse cast of brand ambassadors. We saw diverse beauties like Duckie Thot, Halima Aden, Slick Woods and Leomie Anderson leading the pack.

Instagram Photo

This was the first time our women were represented on the front and center. Before now, a Black model was propped up in the side as an afterthought.

The Emotional Connect

Did you know girls were crying on the counters at Sephora? They had finally found their match!

Retailers may not have all the space for the ‘5o shades of beige’ on their shelves but the consumers definitely have a demand for it! The snide remarks from Sephora employees don’t matter when the brand is being showered with love from all over the world.
Instagram Photo
Previously, many Black women with a deep skin tone used to be sent away from the counter. Few makeup brands sold a foundation that perfectly matched their skin. Moreover, those belonging to a mixed background or a different ethnicity were too at a loss for the perfect shade.

However, Fenty Beauty debunked this myth and ‘made a formula that worked for all skin tones’.

The Power

Cosmetics have always given women power. It is seen as a tool to enhance their features and beauty. Fenty Beauty gives our women the power to rock a ‘perfect skin’ with a range that doesn’t make them ‘ashy’.

Here’s to the ‘no makeup’ look we had all only dreamed of!

Cuomo Is Right, America Has Never Been ‘Great’ For Many of Us

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is taking some heat for a statement he made at a conference on Wednesday. His words:

We’re not going to Make America Great Again. It was never that great. We have not reached greatness. We will reach greatness when every American is fully engaged.

Of course, the right-wing (which loathes Cuomo as well as the state he governs) did not hesitate to twist the governor’s words out of context and use them in full-blown attack mode.

“It’s shocking that Andrew Cuomo would make such an offensive remark that insults the people of this country, the ideals upon which she was founded and the countless men and women who have fought and died to protect her,” said New York Republican Committee Chairman Ed Cox.

Cuomo is up for re-election this year. His Republican challenger, Marc Molinaro said that Cuomo “owes the nation an apology.” Unsurprisingly, President Trump weighed in, tweeting that Cuomo was having a “total meltdown.”

All the furor leads me to wonder, at which moment in history did America become great for African Americans?

Was it during the 1700s when our ancestors were kidnapped, shackled, and sold off? Despite Ben Carson’s delusional depiction of slaves as “immigrants who came here in the bottom of slave ships, worked even longer, even harder for less” the 1700s were kind of horrific for black people.

Perhaps some may think the 1800s were great for African Americans, because, hey, slavery ended. Ending the practice of human beings as chattel is a pretty low bar for achieving “greatness.” Also, slavery’s end was the beginning of decades of hell for black folk in the form of Jim Crow, the Ku Klux Klan, lynchings, voter intimidation, abject poverty, the Black Codes…etcetera, etcetera.

Was the 20th century when America finally became great for people of color? There certainly were moments of greatness. FDR’s New Deal provided unprecedented assistance to African Americans. The NAACP was formed. And, the iconic civil rights movement forever changed the conversation about race in America.

Yet, all of the above-mentioned things had to happen because life still sucked for black people.

National greatness eludes us even today. In the 21st century, prison is the new plantation. African Americans are incarcerated at five times the rate of whites (and in some states, at 10 times the rate).

The racial wealth gap is a subject we cover extensively at Black Enterprise. Although more blacks now own businesses (in fact, black-owned businesses increased by a rate of 400% this year) and are attaining higher education, the racial wealth gap is not narrowing. In 2016, according to the Census Bureau, the median income for white American households was $ 63,041 in stark contrast to black households at $ 39,490.

Even when we are gainfully employed, climbing the corporate ladder, African Americans are paid less for doing the same work as whites. Black women are paid approximately 63 cents on the dollar earned by a white man even at an equal educational level.

You would think after all the trials and tribulations African Americans have overcome and faced, they would at least let us protest injustice peacefully. NFL players have been a particular bane of the President’s, even calling those that kneel in protest “sons of b*tches.” His supporters often make the same collective jeer; “They make millions, they have nothing to protest!”

OK, black unemployment is at a historical low. That’s got to be a plus-one for a great America. The black unemployment rate is something Trump and his supporters keep touting as a reason America is great for black Americans.

Yet, whether that faction is screaming that NFL players should ‘just stick to football and enjoy your millions,’ or claiming blacks owe allegiance to Trump because of the unemployment rate, it sounds they are less concerned about this country being great for African Americans, but more that we should be grateful for whatever gains we make here.

I am going to take a hard pass on the suggestion that America is great for everyone. In their indignant pre-midterm election apoplexy, Cuomo’s critics are ignoring the entirety of his statement, “We will reach greatness when every American is fully engaged.”

It’s important we don’t deem America great just yet. Once greatness is achieved, there is no further ascent to be made, nothing more to improve, no reason to keep striving. There is much that is great about our country, but so much more work to be done to truly achieve liberty and justice for all.

What’s the Prettiest Thing You Own — and Do You Use It?

So here’s a fun little question for today: What is the prettiest thing you own — and do you use it? Do you even SEE it on a regular basis? If no on the using/seeing, why not? (Variations on this could be your most valued item, e.g., your grandmother’s suit she made for herself when she started work; or the most expensive thing you own, e.g. your wedding dress.) Does the item have value for you for sentimental reasons? Did you know when you got the item that it would be have such a special place in your mind — or is it one of those things that you came to appreciate over time?

For my $ .02:

  • The prettiest thing I own is probably an Alexis Bittar necklace — I still love the stinker but it often feels like it’s a little bit too much of a look, so I rarely wear it anymore. I’d also say my wedding dress is one of the prettiest things I own — the chantilly lace was perfect — but, while I see the wedding pictures often, I haven’t seen the dress itself in years. (I think my mother has it in her attic? Hmmn.)
  • The most valuable, irreplaceable item I own is my wedding guestbook, which I see on the shelf every day and flip through once every few years. It was a picture project that collected pictures of my husband and me over our lives up to that point, and it’s signed with lovely well wishes from all of our closest friends and family. It’s really hard for me to pick a single kid-related item to be sentimental about, in part because I’m sentimental about all of it, and in part because the things they use to death — like their blankets — are more theirs than mine.
  • The most expensive item I own, aside from my wedding rings, is probably my 30th birthday present to myself, a Cartier watch, which I rarely wear anymore because I like my Apple Watch. I’m still happy to see it in my jewelry drawer, I guess, and I’m still happy I bought it, but it’s just one of those things I rarely wear anymore.

How about you guys?

Ariana Calls Pete ‘My Soulmate’ in New Song — See the Lyrics!

So in love! Ariana Grande gushed over fiancé Pete Davidson in a new song of the same name off her Sweetener album.

“I thought you into my life, whoa / Look at my mind / No better place or a time / Look how they align,” the “Pete Davidson” lyrics read. “Universe must have my back / Fell from the sky into my lap / And I know you know that you’re my soulmate and all that.”

“I’m like ooh, ooh, ooh / My heart ain’t gon’ be ready for you,” Grande sings. “I’mma be happy, happy / I’mma be happy, happy / Won’t get no crying from me.”

Grande, 25, previously teased the track via Instagram last month and defended naming it after the Saturday Night Live comedian, 24. “He’s my fiancé. This is my album,” she replied to a skeptic. “I’m an honest and emotional artist and human being and if my openness in my work isn’t for you, that’s OK; I won’t be offended. Still wishing y’all all the love in the world.”

Us Weekly broke the news in June that Grande and Davidson got engaged after weeks of dating. “The are a perfect fit. They are not rushing to get married,” a source revealed at the time. “Their friends are really excited and supportive.”

Another source added that the couple “are looking forward to a very long engagement.”

Davidson opened up about the pair’s lighting-fast love in GQ magazine’s September issue. “The day I met her I was, like, ‘Hey, I’ll marry you tomorrow,” he told the publication. “She was calling my bluff. I sent her a picture of [engagement rings]. I was, like, ‘Do you like any of these?’ She was, like, ‘Those are my favorite ones’ and I was, like, ‘Sick.’”

The Set it Up actor added that the duo have yet to set a wedding date, but the occasion is “definitely going to happen, for sure.”

It all makes sense.

Words by Chloe Simpkins

We’ve all seen the adorable photos of Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, with Kate Middleton and Prince William releasing official portraits to mark milestone moments in their children’s lives.

It’s pretty hard to stop your heart melting a little bit when you see the snap of Princess Charlotte waving or Prince Louis’ first official portrait.

But you might not know that, contrary to royal tradition, Kensington Palace previously revealed that it is often Kate behind the camera.

Yes that’s right, not only did she do the school run the day after giving birth to Prince Louis, she’s also basically a professional photographer.

Kate reportedly has a real love for photography but that’s not the only reason she opts to take the snaps herself instead of hiring a photographer.

Will and Kate have an understanding with the British media that lets them share portraits of these special moments in exchange for general privacy for their children day to day.

‘Nothing is a given, but in terms of managing to keep a good relationship with the British media, it’s in William and Kate’s interest to release photos’, royal commentator Victoria Arbiter told Cosmopolitan.

Meanwhile, we’re just wondering if there’s anything she can’t do.

What the DCEU Can Learn From ‘Teen Titans Go! To the Movies’

Can you remember the last time a DC film was good? Of course not. Aside from Wonder Woman, they haven’t made a good film since The Dark Knight Rises. With so many bad films lately, the last thing you’d expect to succeed would be DC’s latest film, Teen Titans Go! To the Movies. Yet, it manages to do just that.

Teen Titans Go! gets a lot of hate from the original show’s fans for being immature and childish. Still, its movie has a 91% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to Justice League’s 40% rating. So, how is that possible, and what can the DCEU learn from the success of Teen Titans Go! To the Movies? They can learn a lot.

Better Plot, Shorter Movies

Batman V Joker: Yawn of Justice
“Yawn of Justice,” indeed.

The DCEU’s films are long, each running more than two hours. When films are that long, pacing can be an issue. While good writing can make a movie worth the length, this was not the case with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Fans would have forgiven the two-and-a-half-hour runtime if the titular fight was worth it. Spoiler alert: it wasn’t.

The premise for their fight in the film is flimsy at best. Batman’s tricked into thinking Superman’s a threat, while Superman’s blackmailed. It lacks the sheer excitement fans would expect from this clash of titans. Worse still, the whole fight gets overshadowed by the battle with Doomsday.

Titans celebrating their victory
Sweet victory.

In contrast, Teen Titans Go! To the Movies is far shorter, at less than 90 minutes with a more focused plot. Since the whole movie is about the Titans learning to be themselves, each scene builds on that lesson. This culminates in the final fight where Robin admits that the Titans may be goofs, yet they’re still heroes. Combine that lesson with the Titans kicking Slade’s butt, and the audience enjoys a more significant payoff.

What the DCEU can learn from the plot and length of Teen Titans Go! To the Movies is that they can tell a good story in less time and with less content. Batman v Superman tried adding too much material, and it left fans with a confusing story. By the time the actual fight between Batman and Superman comes around, you wish the movie was over! Compared to that, Batman and Robin feels like an Oscar-winner.

Stop Trying to Worldbuild

Every DC movie in Teen Titans GO! To the Movies
Who the heck are the Challengers of the Unknown?

DC had wanted to do Justice League so badly that it made the DCEU run before it knew how to walk. They crammed a gang of characters into each film but didn’t take the time to develop them. Zack Snyder thought that adding a bunch of famous heroes would be enough, and it backfired on him. The result? The DCEU is an unsatisfying mess.

Unlike Justice League or Batman vs. Superman, Teen Titans Go! To the Movies doesn’t try to worldbuild because it knows that it would be a waste of time. Fitting into a larger universe means conforming to pre-existing plots, which limits creative freedom. Not having to worry about that means Teen Titans Go! To the Movies has more time to focus on making sure the film entertains the audience. The result is a standalone film that is fun to watch.

Teen Titans Go! To the Movies is a wake-up call to DC: they need to stop trying to force together a shared universe. Instead, they should focus on ensuring their films can stand on their own at the box office and with critics. If enough standalone films are a success, then DC can consider more crossover films down the road.

Don’t Be Afraid to Lighten Up

A big problem with the DCEU thus far is how it is so dark — almost depressing — in its tone. It feels like DC injected Batman’s darkness into its other films in the hopes of recreating that success. Instead of success, though, audiences watched overly-edgy, complex stories with bad ratings.

The DC films don’t need to be as dark and as heavy as an ordinary Batman film, and Teen Titans Go! To the Movies shows what they can do instead. Even if it’s at their own expense or makes them look like goofs, the Titans aren’t afraid of making viewers laugh. Besides, if they like prank calling Superman or pooping in a prop toilet, that doesn’t make them any less of heroes.

Titans watching a movie
Captivated by a solid movie.

The DC films have tried being dark and gritty, and that hasn’t worked out as well as they hoped. So instead of doing that, DC should try to inject some humor into their films. It doesn’t have to be to the extent of Teen Titans Go! To the Movies, but throwing in some snappy comebacks and one-liners can take the edge off a tense scene. Finding the balance between the Titans and Batman is what DC needs right now.

Despite how goofy it can be, Teen Titans Go! To the Movies has enough charm, humor, and self-confidence to work as a stand-alone film. DC should take note of this animated film’s success and see what its fans are looking for in a movie.

Barack and Michelle Obama, Other Notables Mourn Aretha Franklin [VIDEO]

President Obama and Michelle Obama sent out a statement on the passing of the “Queen of Soul,” Aretha Franklin:

America has no royalty. But we do have a chance to earn something more enduring. Born in Memphis and raised in Detroit, Aretha Franklin grew up performing gospel songs in her father’s congregation. For more than six decades since, every time she sang, we were all graced with a glimpse of the divine. Through her compositions and unmatched musicianship, Aretha helped define the American experience. In her voice, we could feel our history, all of it and in every shade—our power and our pain, our darkness and our light, our quest for redemption and our hard-won respect. She helped us feel more connected to each other, more hopeful, more human. And sometimes she helped us just forget about everything else and dance.

Aretha may have passed on to a better place, but the gift of her music remains to inspire us all. May the Queen of Soul rest in eternal peace. Michelle and I send our prayers and warmest sympathies to her family and all those moved by her song.

The Queen of Soul died on Thursday at 76. She was the first woman to ever be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2009, she sang ‘My Country, ‘Tis of Thee’ at Barack Obama’s inauguration.

President Obama also took to Twitter in celebration of Franklin:

“Aretha helped define the American experience. In her voice, we could feel our history, all of it and in every shade—our power and our pain, our darkness and our light, our quest for redemption and our hard-won respect. May the Queen of Soul rest in eternal peace.”

The NAACP also paid tribute:

We remember Aretha for the joy and love she brought into our lives and society via her powerful voice,” said NAACP Chairman Leon W. Russell. “No one can discuss the civil rights movement nor music without paying respect to the Queen of Soul. We’ll miss her dearly.”

Aretha Franklin not only revolutionized the sound of music during her career, she contributed to the changing of our society from a segregated one to one where all people, men and women were equal. Her chart-topping hit Respect became the de facto anthem for a nation struggling to break free from the chains of racism, segregation and a staunch patriarchy. Not only did she lend her voice to the struggle, but at times and in substantial ways, donated money to the Civil Rights Movement, supporting the work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the NAACP and others.

“What would our struggle or American society be without the music of Aretha?” asked NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson. “Her unmitigated ‘Blackness’ and contributions to art and national progress places her on the Mt. Everest of American icons who changed this society for the better.”

Hillary Clinton praised Franklin on Twitter, “Mourning the loss today of who shared her spirit and talent with the world. She deserves not only our RESPECT but also our lasting gratitude for opening our eyes, ears and hearts. Rest in eternal peace, my friend, Clinton tweeted.

President Donald Trump tweeted, “The Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, is dead. She was a great woman, with a wonderful gift from God, her voice. She will be missed!”

Choupette Turns 7 — With Claws Out

HIDDEN CLAWS: Did Choupette, Karl Lagerfeld’s famous pet cat, turn 7 years old unnoticed? As if! The blue-eyed beauty is said to have received thousands of wishes on social media platforms including Instagram, where she counts 112,000 followers and where she shares a bit of advice alongside a photo of herself enjoying a luxurious birthday stretch. “I started my social media career before ‘influencers’ were a thing. Please refrain from using this term with moi,” the caption reads.
Of course there was a party, complete with presents (fabric toys), a single candle stuck on a plate of shrimp, and a sparkly sign on the wall crafted by her nannies. Among those in attendance were Lagerfeld’s two godsons, and his bodyguard and personal assistant Sébastien Jondeau, who posted a group shot on Instagram.
The Birman has something of a catty personality on Instagram, noting in her birthday post: “My annual salary and net worth are none of your business unless it’s @forbes calling to put me on their next cover. Move over @kyliejenner!”
She also takes a little bite at the hand that feeds her: “I may be ‘7’ but I don’t look a day over 5. Since age is just a number, I think Daddy @karllagerfeld should finally start

Pete Davidson Is Responsible for Groceries in Ariana Grande’s Home

In any partnership, an equitable division of labor is important. In the home shared by pop superstar Ariana Grande and Saturday Night Live comedian Pete Davidson, there is no exception.

The hyper-famous Grande and Davidson, who shared a whirlwind romance that led to their surprise engagement story this summer, are now living together in a luxury, high-design New York City apartment that Grande bought for a reported $ 16 million. But when it comes to the kitchen, it sounds like the “God Is a Woman” singer, whose album Sweetener is out Friday, takes a back seat to her fiancé’s culinary choices; he told GQ in a new profile interview that he’s the one responsible for stocking the fridge.

“She’s really sweet. She’s like, ‘This is our house,’ and I’m like, ‘You’re very nice for saying that. Thank you for letting me stay here,’ ” he joked. “She’s like, ‘We’re getting married!’ And I’m like, ‘I know, thank you for letting me stay here.’ ”

While the rest of their cohabitational development is still a work in progress — “It’s like, we have six beanbags, but we have no forks—you know what I mean?” — it’s good to hear at least Davidson has got the refrigerator covered. “We’re learning how to be adults,” he said. “We’re having a really fun time.”

Aretha Franklin, Soul Legend, Dies at 76

Aretha Franklin, a music legend known for stirring vocals that managed to mix the powers of gospel, soul and pop music, has died. She was 76.
The exact cause of death is unknown, but Franklin had recently been placed in hospice care due to pancreatic cancer at her home in Detroit, a move made public by her family and publicist, Gwendolyn Quinn. Quinn confirmed Franklin’s death Thursday.
Franklin has been praised by all corners of the music industry since her deteriorating condition was made public last week. Stevie Wonder visited Franklin this week, according to multiple reports, and even former President Clinton tweeted that he and Hillary Clinton were spending time listening to Franklin’s large body of work “like people all around the world, [music that] has been such an important part of our lives for the last 50 years.” Other celebrities from Mariah Carey to Lin-Manuel Miranda also have paid tribute on social media.
At turns called the Queen of Soul and the Queen of Rock, showing she couldn’t really be categorized as either, Franklin stood out from the time she hit the scene in the early Sixties, and before the end of the decade, she’d produced some of her most enduring

SPECIAL DEALS UPDATE:

Cathy Hughes Releases Touching Statement About The Passing Of Aretha Franklin

Source: Jay Silverman / Jay Silverman

Today I join my community, my industry and the world in mourning the loss and celebrating the life of my dear sister, friend, and ally, Aretha Franklin. I send my love and offer prayers of grace and peace to the members of her family, her friends and colleagues who walked alongside her and shared her with tens of millions of fans around the world.

I have so many fond memories of Aretha. Throughout her career, I was blessed to share her music and her iconic story. I am humbled to have been a part of her journey and to have served as an eyewitness to the evolution of her artistry and the formation of her legacy.

For more than 60 years, Aretha Franklin shared her gift and touched the world. She was a musical pioneer whose voice defines an era, amplifies a sound and reflects the range of who we are as black people. It is no wonder that Rolling Stone Magazine listed her as number one on its list of “100 Greatest Singers of All Time.”

Aretha’s music commanded “R-E-S-P-E-C-T,” and that song not only became a rallying cry during the civil rights movement but also served as an anthem for women who still identify with its message, today. Her timeless classics also became historical markers in our personal journeys and our collective story as a community. She understood her progress was our progress, her success was our success, and when the door opened for her, it opened for us as well. Aretha was unapologetically black. She was committed to black music and black radio. She understood its role in her career and remained loyal to our company across the years.

Like many of our musicians, Aretha’s musical roots are embedded in the black church, and gospel music was at her core. Her talent transcended genres and not only earned her the title of the “Queen of Soul” but also the distinction of being the first woman to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. And while many will remember her for all of the titles she has received, I believe, Aretha Franklin, in her own words, said it best, “being a singer is a natural gift. It means I’m using to the highest degree possible the gift that God gave me to use. I’m happy with that.” And Aretha Franklin, so are we. Rest in peace my sister.

With total love, respect and appreciation,

Cathy Hughes

The comedian has struggled to land a job since he got the boot from the Beeb[/caption]

“My profound thanks to @AssemblyFest for yet again being frightful hosts.

“And much love to those that gave me their hour. Love love.”

The Beeb took action after he was accused of pestering a female researched on The One Show when he was working as a reporter.

He was seen as a rising star in the corporation but has struggled to land work since.

A spokeswoman for the BBC said at the time: “Producers of The One Show received a complaint regarding Hardeep’s behaviour towards a production colleague.

“She made no formal complaint and has acknowledged that One Show management took the issue extremely seriously.

“He was reprimanded and immediately apologised. He agreed to take some time away from the show to reflect on his behaviour. This leave of absence has been agreed to be six months.”

However he denied he had been accused of sexual assault but conceded he had “overstepped the mark”.

Hardeep said: “Nobody has accused me of sexual harassment. I recognise I over stepped the mark and have apologised unreservedly.”

Watching Crazy Rich Asians in a room full of other Asians

Watching Crazy Rich Asians in a room full of other Asians

Watching <em>Crazy Rich Asians</em> in a room full of other Asians

This essay contains light spoilers for Crazy Rich Asians, which opened in theaters today, August 15th.

There’s a moment in Crazy Rich Asians when we hear an Asian accent. Peik Lin (played by Awkwafina) is walking Rachel (Constance Wu) through her family’s giant mansion, where the gold-heavy decor is described as “Donald Trump’s bathroom.” Then the accent appears—the one that has haunted almost every Asian American kid since the days of Mr. Yunioshi and Long Duk Dong. The accent that tells the white people in the audience, “You are allowed to laugh at Asian people.”

In Crazy Rich Asians, that accent comes from Ken Jeong, who plays Awkwafina’s father and first appears dressed as an Asian Elvis. I tense up. “Oh no,” I think to myself. Even in a film that’s supposed to be a historic win for Asians in Hollywood, with an all-Asian cast, we can’t escape that accent. We can’t escape being the butt of the joke.

And then something wonderful happens.

Jeong drops the accent and says, “I’m just joking. I don’t have an accent. I went to Cal State Fullerton.”

I’m in a theatre with almost 200 people—95 percent of them are Asian—and the room erupts into laughter, me included. It was relief. Like the film was saying, “Asian accents aren’t funny, and fuck you for thinking they are.”

Ken Jeong in "Crazy Rich Asians"
Warner Bros. Pictures

When I walked into Crazy Rich Asians, I tried to keep my expectations for the movie low. As my friend Christine (who is Korean-American) put it, “It has to be really, really shitty for me not to like it.” I wasn’t going to play into the Tiger Mom stereotype and expect excellence. I just really, really didn’t want it to suck.

As Christine and I sat down with our beers at a complimentary screening for Asian American journalists, I looked around the room and thought to myself, This is going to be a tough crowd. As director Jon M. Chu told the Hollywood Reporter, “If our movie does well, four [Asian-centric] projects will go into production….if it doesn’t, they’re going to be in unknown states.” The future of Asians in Hollywood was at stake, and if the journalists around me didn’t like the film, what hope did the movie have with a more general audience?

Two hours later, I had watched the “poor” Chinese American Rachel navigate the opulent lifestyle of the rich and Singaporean and manage to leave with her principals intact. I saw her share a kiss with Nick (Henry Golding), and the audience exploded into applause at the end credits. I turned to Christine: “What did you think?” She had read the book by Kevin Kwan on which the movie was based. She responded with, “I wanted it to be more about the family than their love story,” but overall, she liked it.

She then said, “I have never seen so many Asians Americans on-screen.”

When I asked other people at the screening what they thought of Crazy Rich Asians, the reactions were as varied as the characters in the movie. The people on screen came in all shapes and sizes. They were funny and romantic, conniving and serious.

Asians are not a monolith, and the film—and reactions to the film—made that clear.

“It reached me on a personal, professional and spiritual level. After a while, I forgot I was Asian,” enthused Toan, who is Chinese-American. “I was watching Astrid [played by Gemma Chan], and seeing her insecurities and her experience with adultery—that happened to someone in my family. And there’s an LGBT character and it resonated with some of my experiences. And I understood the immigrant experience with Rachel.”

While some audience members I talked to loved the film as much as Toan, others found it to be lacking. “I didn’t see anyone who looked like me except for one Filipino lady,” said Clare, who is Filipino-American. Indeed, the film has come under criticisms for focusing too much on East Asians, and not on the the Indian and Malaysian population of Singapore; the only “brown faces” in the movie are servants. “Like Astrid’s maids, they were all Filipino!” exclaimed Clare.

Still, Clare admits it was “refreshing” to see that many Asians in a movie. She plans to see it again.

Unfortunately, when you’re part of a marginalized group and the opportunities to see yourself in pop culture are so few and far between (25 years since Joy Luck Club, 13 years since Memoirs of a Geisha), the very little you receive bears the burden of perfection. It must represent your particular story or else it’s a disappointment—because there probably won’t be another opportunity.

Already, there are criticisms of Crazy Rich Asians for not being all things to all Asian people, as if it’s possible for one movie to accurately represent 48 different countries and their diasporas. That would be like expecting The Godfather to represent all white people.

For me, as someone who grew up as a crazy poor immigrant Asian—whose parents actually did encourage me to follow my dreams—the movie wasn’t my perfect Asian American movie. But after seeing the film, and laughing along to lines like, “God forbid we lose the ancient Chinese tradition of guilting your children,” I realized that the film didn’t need to be perfect for me to love it. I could love it on its own terms: as a romantic comedy with a distinctly Asian American sensibility.

The leads were charming and beautiful, and they oozed chemistry. The supporting characters were memorable and the jokes were funny. And while I didn’t relate to every moment that occurred on screen, I  certainly related to some things. When Eleanor (Michelle Yeoh) asked Nick, “Did you eat yet?” as a greeting, I was reminded of my own mom who shows her love not with words, but with food. When Eleanor tells Rachel, “You are an American,” it reminded me of my first trip to Vietnam. I quickly learned that, over there, I wasn’t considered Vietnamese—even though I was born there.

And Crazy Rich Asians may be the first Hollywood film to explain why Asian Americans call each other bananas: “Yellow on the outside, white on the inside.”

As Constance Wu wrote on Twitter, “I know CRW won’t represent every Asian American. So for those who don’t feel seen, I hope there is as story you find soon that does represent you.”

Crazy Rich Asians is an important first step to more: more stories, more representation, more complexity.

This week, I’ll be seeing Crazy Rich Asians for a second time, not necessarily because I’m aching to see it again, but because if see it multiple times—and those around me at that screening see it multiple times—then that movie will do well at the box office, and that will lead to more Asian-led films. Perhaps seeing Crazy Rich Asians again will lead me one step closer to my perfect Asian American movie.

Little Known Black History Fact: Georg Olden

Graphic designer Georg Olden broke a race barrier in the art world on this day in 1963. The award-winning artist became the first Black designer of a postal stamp, which celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation.

Olden was born November 13, 1920 in Birmingham, Ala., and attended Dunbar High School in Washington. D.C. He then went on to Virginia State College, dropping out just after the Pearl Harbor attack. He joined the Office of Strategic Services, the organization that precedes the CIA, as a designer, working under a colonel who would later become vice president of CBS’ television division. The colonel brought Olden on and the union was fruitful.

Eventually, Olden, one of the few Black people working in television, lead his own staff but moved on in the early ’60’s. His push for innovation in design work earned him several awards, including being a seven-time winner of the Clio Award, which he designed, and a two-time winner of the Art Director’s Club of New York Award.

The five-cent stamp Olden designed featured a broken Black chain on a blue background with white borders. That same year, Olden joined the firm of McCann Erickson, which let him go in 1970, citing economic downturn. Olden suspected otherwise. In the ’70’s, Olden brought a class-action lawsuit against McCann and just as he was making headway with the case, a live-in girlfriend shot him dead in February 1975.

The girlfriend was later acquitted of the charges. Olden was 54.

Olden is the father of author Marc Olden and Georg Olden Jr., a former child actor and real estate professional.

7 Members of the Same Family Killed in Horror Crash: ‘My Heart Hurts Like It Never Hurt Before’

Seven family members were killed in a head-on car crash in eastern Oregon on Monday.

Erika Boquet, 29, her three children and Boquet’s stepmother Kyla Brown, 28, and her two children were all killed when a 1999 Toyota 4Runner driving on the other side of the road, crossed into their lane and smashed into their 2016 Toyota 4Runner, Oregan State Police confirmed.

Boquet, her children Isabella, 11, Elisabeth, 9, and Tytis, 6, as well as Brown and her children Arianna, 10, and Xavier, 2, were all pronounced dead at the scene, police said in a statement.

The lone driver of the 1999 Toyota 4Runner, Mark Robert Rundell, 48, also died in the collision.

The young family was on their way to Las Vegas from Washington during the time of the fatal accident, which took place at around 10 a.m.

Boquet’s father and Brown’s partner Louis Johnson was flying to Nevada to meet his family when tragedy struck.

The devastated father and grandfather posted on his Facebook that his “world came crashing down.”

“My heart hurts like it never hurt before. I have no answers to a 1000 whys,” he wrote, asking friends and family to join him at a vigil held Wednesday. “We lost 7 loved ones and the pain we feel is deep. I need to see the love I lost in you.”

Boquet’s brother Jessie Tate has set up a GoFundMe page in hopes of raising money to cover the funeral costs.

“Our family is at a complete loss. We are trying to come up with enough money to bring them home and give them the proper burial they deserve,” the GoFundMe page reads.

“Erika was kind and always giving to others. Her heart was big and full of compassion. Words can not describe how much Erika, Bella, Elisa and Tytis will be missed.”

So far, the page has raised over $ 30,000.

Tate also opened up to The Oregonian about his sister’s devastating death.

“It’s a tragedy I wouldn’t wish on anyone else,” Tate explained to the publication.

“She was outgoing, personable, made friends everywhere she went, and her kids took after her,” Tate continued.

“They all just cared about everyone around them.”

The accident remains under investigation.

Melissa Schuman Accused Backstreet Boy Nick Carter of Rape. And Then ‘the Vultures Came Out.’

Photo Illustration by Sarah Rogers/The Daily Beast

When she was 12, Melissa Schuman earned a place in Dream, a girl band that made its mark in the early aughts with hits like “This Is Me” and “He Loves U Not.” None other than Diddy signed Dream to Bad Boy Records, and they joined a pantheon of pop groups that were peaking in the 2000s. It was a whirlwind. “Basically, I was in Dream from 12 to 18,” Schuman told The Daily Beast during a recent Skype call from Los Angeles.

The all-American boys and girls who were being mass marketed to middle schoolers across the country made up a tight-knit community. “We all knew each other or knew of each other, we all toured together,” Schuman explained. “In regards to the industry and the people who were working behind the scenes, it’s all the same people. People don’t realize that there’s a very small group of managers that are reputable, that can really get you where it is that you hope to go. It’s a very small industry, everybody knows each other, and it’s very interconnected.”

Schuman’s group toured more with *NSYNC and Britney Spears than they did with Nick Carter’s group, the Backstreet Boys, “So my encounters with BSB were pretty limited. There were maybe a few times, I think at one point I bumped into them on the red carpet.” But one day, as Schuman writes on her blog, Melissa Explains It All, she and Carter were set up on a phone call—literally.

Kaiser Permanente Receives Top Recognition in the American Heart Association’s Workplace Health Achievement Index

For the third year in a row, Kaiser Permanente is being recognized for taking significant steps to build a culture of health in the workplace. This year marks the second time Kaiser Permanente has been recognized as a Gold-level honoree, the top level in the 2018 American Heart Association Workplace Health Achievement Index.

“It is an honor to be recognized by the American Heart Association. Kaiser Permanente believes in the importance of building a culture of health in the workplace to ensure our employees are inspired to live healthier lives,” said Kaiser Permanente Chairman and CEO Bernard J. Tyson.

The Workplace Health Achievement Index was created in partnership with the Association’s CEO Roundtable members, and uses science-based best practices to evaluate the overall quality and comprehensiveness of a company’s workplace health and well-being programs.

“Our aim — to support the people of Kaiser Permanente in living healthier lives — helps ensure that we provide the high-quality care and service that our members and the communities we serve expect,” said Kathy Gerwig, vice president of Employee Safety, Health and Wellness, and environmental stewardship officer of Kaiser Permanente. “It’s more than supporting our workforce with programs and interventions; it’s about taking a strategic approach and engaging with employees to learn more about what they want in health of mind, body and spirit.”

A unique feature of the index is that it calculates an average heart health score for employees of participating companies that securely submit aggregate health data. More than 1,000 companies completed the assessment this year. Kaiser Permanente was one of 186 companies to achieve the Gold level.

Tyson is a member of the Association’s CEO Roundtable, a leadership collaborative of more than 40 CEOs from some of America’s largest corporations and organizations. Together, these CEOs lead by example to create and sustain a culture of health and well-being in the workplace by collaborating on best practices and measurable new strategies for employee engagement.

Men’s Continues to Gain Ground as Sales Increase

LAS VEGAS — Men’s wear represents 40 percent of the global apparel market and continues to grow both in popularity and penetration for most retailers. With that experience as the backdrop, merchants shopping the shows here earlier this week were in upbeat spirits as they scoured the aisles for the latest trend-right product to fuel that men’s wear momentum heading into next year.
Christine Wu, senior trend analyst for the Doneger Group, said the men’s wear market is projected to increase to $ 33 billion in sales by 2020, up 14 percent from $ 29 billion in 2015, the most recent figure available from Euromonitor International. Among the most popular categories are activewear-inspired pieces that offer performance and technology attributes, as well as streetwear, both at the designer and more democratically priced level.
Patty Leto, senior vice president of merchandising for Doneger, said that in order to sustain the strong showing, retailers have to reach men on their own terms and provide a “targeted and more personal approach to the assortment.” This will require a “necessary recalibration” of the business.
But because men’s wear doesn’t move that quickly, that recalibration will boil down to subtle updates of the current trends, notably nostalgia, outdoor lifestyle and

Beau Brummell: The Original Gentleman of Style

Just as all of humanity can trace its origins to a single common ancestor, the DNA of classic menswear, dandyism, and the contemporary iGent goes back to one person: George Bryan “Beau” Brummell (1778-1840). In this profile, we examine the life of a man whose impact on style can still be strongly felt more than 175 years after his death.

Beau Brummell: The Original Gentleman of Style

Early Life

Although Beau Brummell lived centuries ago, aspects of his life will bring to mind today’s #menswear personalities. His story represents the culmination of generations of gradual social elevation: his grandfather was a shopkeeper whose clients included aristocrats, his father gained higher status and wealth as private parliamentary secretary to Lord North, and Brummell himself would obtain the friendship of the future King George IV. And, much like today’s Instagram influencers, he achieved his success entirely by promoting his individual style.

From childhood, Brummell was educated to be a gentleman of status. His father sent him and his brother William to Eton, where, by his early teens he had already demonstrated a precocious mastery of stylistic innovation, embellishing his cravat by adding a gold buckle to it.

Eton College

Eton College in Windsor, where Beau Brummell first displayed his sartorial innovations.

This flair with dressing, accompanied by a penchant for witty remarks, were early signs of what we could call the Beau Brummell brand, one he would consciously cultivate for the rest of his life. As a student, Brummell was average, indifferent to his studies both at Eton and, later, at Oxford, where he remained for only a single term.

Upon the death of his father in 1794, the sixteen-year-old Brummell inherited a third of the estate (£20,000-£30,000, equal to several million today by one estimation), held in trust. At this point, he petitioned to join the Tenth Royal Hussars, the regiment of the Prince of Wales, likely in an effort to curry favor from the man who was next in line for the throne. This would be a springboard to further advancement since the new money Brummell held would not be enough to secure a place among the highest of society. However, it may have been enough to get into the regiment, a gambit that paid off for him, as he was indeed noticed by the Prince and highly favored by him on the basis of his charm. As in his academic career, Brummell didn’t do anything special while in the military, yet he managed to gain two promotions–to lieutenant and then to captain–and special privileges–he was allowed to shirk on his duties. Brummell had his entrée into the so-called “bon ton,” the elite 1% of British society, due to the patronage of the Prince.

Brummell as Style Influencer

However, when the Hussars were slated to be posted to Manchester, which Brummell considered a social and cultural backwater, he resigned his commission and established himself as an arbiter of style and wit in London. This was the height of Brummell’s fame and where he made his lasting mark on menswear. His greatest contribution was promoting a completely new style of dress for men, later called “The Great Male Renunciation.” Previous to Brummell’s innovations, men’s clothes were more flamboyant, heavily influenced by the French court and involved wearing wigs, white hair powder, perfume, elaborate silks, and knee breeches with stockings. Brummell replaced this with natural, unadorned hair, long trousers worn with boots, and coats without much ornamentation. Specifically, his uniform was a blue coat (known as Bath coating) with a buff waistcoat, off-white linen shirt with a white cravat, buckskin trousers, and dark riding boots. In the evening, he wore a blue coat as well, though with a white waistcoat, black pants that ended at the ankle, striped silk socks and black slippers. Furthermore, he replaced the reliance on perfumes and powders for personal hygiene with the concept of a daily bath.

Beau Brummell's daytime look

The earlier fascination with Continental style had been fed by the great French aristocratic courts of Kings Louis XIV-XVI as the vanguard of fashion. However, the bloody wake-up call of the French Revolution in 1789, followed by a war between Britain and France in the 1790s, prompted the growth of a homegrown British style. Brummell’s genius, however, was not that he invented the elements of his dress from scratch but rather that brought together various inspirations and made of them a coherent whole.

The boots, buckskin trousers and use of wool evoked countrywear, which continues to play a huge role in British tailoring to this day. According to Brummell’s biographer, Ian Kelly, the tailcoat with brass buttons was something already worn at Eton, while blue and buff were the unofficial colors of those in the Whig political party. Directing attention to the cravat worn high on the neck was something being done in post-Revolutionary France, so that influence never went away, and the streamlined silhouette and muted colors of the new look as a whole were supposed to recreate, in clothed form, male nude statuary from Classical Greece. Thus, the hybrid #menswear looks we see today–British Prince of Wales patterned jackets made in unstructured Neapolitan cuts worn with American OCBD shirts and loafers–represent a continuation of Brummell’s legacy: taking the best aspects of different cultural approaches to style and making of them a global synthesis.

A modern #menswear synthesis of styles

Brummell’s Legacy

The mechanism by which his influence spread is much the same as what happens with today’s iGent who is seen wearing a tobacco linen suit or Casentino overcoats, making it the “must have” of the season. One man innovates and everyone else follows suit, which is what happened, with essentially positive long-term results in the case of Brummell and his circle. What he did in the early 19th century still informs the consensus of what good taste looks like in menswear. His clothes represented an understated elegance including a disdain for anything “over the top.” He also established a limited range of appropriate colors and the color theory for combining them effectively through contrast, something we still do when we pair blue and gray or brown and blue. In later generations, Brummell’s look would evolve into the suit and tie but, more directly, into the sport coat and pants combination, since he preferred not to match his coat with his trousers. The emphasis on neckwear as the ornamental center of attention in a tailored outfit remains with us via the necktie or bow tie. Brummell’s choice of contrasting black and white as he changed from day into evening wear remains the black-tie dress code today. Yet it is perhaps formal morning dress, particularly a morning coat and separate colored trousers with a light-colored vest, that most closely evokes the Regency attire Brummell actually wore.

Many of the behaviors of menswear connoisseurs are also the legacy of Beau Brummell. For one thing, he showed an incredible attention to detail as he dictated how he wanted his clothes to be made–something lovers of bespoke clothes are certainly familiar with–and would go to multiple tailors, each of whom was the best for a different article of clothing. Always displaying a strong cravat game, Brummell time-consuming approach to clothes also applied to his neckwear. It is said that he spent hours adjusting his cravat in front of a mirror to get it just right, arranged in such a way that it looked natural and not overly contrived. In this, he practiced one of the defining aspects of sprezzatura: dedicating a great deal of effort to make something you wear look nonchalant like no effort was required at all. Today, Brummell’s practice of sprezzatura is most often applied to how the contemporary gent should arrange his pocket square to look nonchalant in contrast to the elaborate and affected variations seen online. Indeed, long before the existence of internet tutorials, Brummell’s followers, including the Prince of Wales himself, would gather to watch him go through his dressing routine, undoubtedly voicing their “likes” and imitating his techniques.

Beau Brummell’s cravat game has translated into the modern pocket square game

Among his Regency-era fanboys, Brummell was known as much for his epigrammatic wit–the tweets of his day–as for his style, and his witty remarks were collected as “Brummellisms.” One, in particular, is often repeated as advice for the current day: “If John Bull [the average Joe] turns around to look at you, you are not well dressed but either too stiff, too tight, or too fashionable.” This has been taken as a warning against dressing like a Pitti peacock in a style that is mainly meant to be noticed by others, though Brummell’s own fame, ironically, depended on the fact that his mode of dress was noticed. A similar paradox should not be lost in our increasingly casual world either since any well-dressed man is likely to stand out nowadays.

Brummell’s Downfall

Like many modern celebrities, Brummell’s lifestyle was ultimately his downfall. His personality was haughty and his witticisms often acerbic or rude, so they had a great potential to alienate people. As one example, his practice was to sit with his admirers in the bow window (thereafter nicknamed the “Beau window”) at White’s gentleman’s club in London and pass judgment on the style of men passing in the street, behavior that is familiar to anyone who frequents menswear forums or reads Instagram comments. However, Brummell’s tendency to say snarky things eventually alienated the Prince of Wales, whom he called “fat” when he didn’t recognize him at a masquerade ball.

The future George IV

A caricature of the Prince of Wales, known for his decadence and obesity.

In actuality, Brummell was unaffected by loss of Prince’s friendship but was instead ruined by a gambling habit. He had always lived an extravagant life that required considerable expense. Membership in the Tenth Regiment was a costly affair, as soldiers had to pay for their own elaborate uniforms, horses, and frequent mess hall banquets. In order to remain well dressed, Brummell also claimed to require at least £800 per year (roughly £67,000), and, in addition to this, he amassed sizable gambling debts. He would lose £10,000 in a night, one source reporting he had debts of more than £600,000 (20 times his original inheritance). Facing numerous creditors, Brummell fled England for Calais in 1816. At this time, he was already suffering from the symptoms of syphilis that he may have contracted while living the high life in London. Eventually, he regained favor with the now King George IV and was granted the position of consul at Caen, which enabled him to begin paying off his debts. Unfortunately, the position, which paid a mere £800 per year. was eliminated after the king’s death, and Brummell found himself first in debtor’s prison and then in a sanitarium where he died, insane, from the symptoms of his sexually transmitted disease. The passing of the once most famous man in England went largely unnoticed.

Beau Brummell as an Old Man

His Legacy

Since his demise, Brummell’s legacy has been subject equally to admiration and ridicule. During the Victorian era, his life was sanitized and various apocryphal sayings and exaggerated practices were attributed to him, but his witticisms were also famously mocked by William Hazlitt for being truly witless and Brummell himself labeled “a splendidly useless human being.” Interestingly, his older brother William lived comfortably as an estate-owner and gentleman without pursuing celebrity though he is essentially forgotten today.

Beau Brummell's Grave

Beau Brummell’s grave in the Protestant Cemetery at Caen still receives regular visitors.

Brummell’s dramatic rise and fall certainly made his life ripe for cinematic treatment, and he has been the subject of several films including one starring Stewart Granger and Elizabeth Taylor in 1954 and a British TV version in 2006. The question of whether Brummell was brilliant or just knew how to get noticed is one that we can ask about social media icons today.

Conclusion

Whatever the case, the fact remains that Beau Brummell was ahead of his time and so many of the things we do as wearers of classic menswear owe a debt to him. What do you think of his style and legacy?

Jimmy Kimmel Grills Tom Arnold: When Will We See Trump’s ‘N-Word’ Tape?

ABC

When The Daily Beast sat down with Jimmy Kimmel for a wide-ranging talk this week, the host joked that the timing of his interview with Tom Arnold Wednesday night “turned out OK.”

That’s because, long before Omarosa Manigault Newman started talking about the alleged tape of Donald Trump using the “N-word,” Arnold had been hyping the very same thing. He even has a new show about it called The Hunt for the Trump Tapes premiering next month on Viceland.

“I don’t think he has the tape, I think he’s heard the tape,” Kimmel told me the day before their interview. “I think if Tom Arnold had that tape we would have heard it within four seconds of him getting it.”

How to Get Your Style Groove Back

how to get your style groove backSo here’s something we haven’t talked about in a thousand years: how to reassess your personal style and, if necessary, get your style groove back. Some fun things we’ve discussed in the past include where to start when you need style inspiration, the weekend you vs. the weekday you, how to cultivate style (vs. following trends), “next step” brands (as in, I’ve graduated from Express — what’s next?) and, many moons ago, how to revamp your entire wardrobe.

I’m going through a bit of this right now myself. This is how I’m trying to get out of my style rut, but I’d love to hear your tips as well!

1) Assess what’s working. For example, you may have a great uniform right now that works — like black tops and gray pants — and you’re just looking to mix it up a little without throwing out your entire wardrobe.

2) Assess where you want to go — and what’s stopping you now. For example, if you’re not a fan of ironing, the starched-blouse-Carolina Herrera/Arianna Huffington look is not for you. But you could add an academic look by wearing collared dickeys beneath sweaters, or replace the idea of a collar with a prominent necklace, worn with an opaque white tee.

3) Retrain your brain, if necessary. For example, maybe you don’t like the look of flats with skirts and dresses, but you ALSO don’t like to wear heels. This doesn’t necessarily mean that skirts and dresses are out for you, just that you have to educate yourself on how people are wearing them. On a related note, this may also be necessary if you’re thinking to yourself, “I wore _[trend]_ when it came around the first time and I won’t be caught DEAD in it again!” If we’re talking about Hammer pants, OK. But bootcuts — or leggings — or duster coats — or plaid — there are a lot of things that feel “trendy” but are just cyclical and come back in style again and again. The people who make the clothes are savvy enough to make the styles different by just a bit — the cuts are just sliiiightly different and the ways they can be worn tend to be different.

4) Get Pinning. I know, if you were in it to win it in 2013 or so with Pinterest, it may seem to be waning in its current iteration, but I really do think that this is where Pinterest excels. (Have you stopped by our Pinterest boards lately for some inspiration?) I’m pinning:

  • outfits I like
  • body twins where I like THEIR outfit (As I’ve noted before, my hourglass shape has turned more apple over the years, and it’s so difficult to find celebrity or blogger inspiration where they don’t look winched into Spanx.)
  • outfits that challenge me — sometimes I look at an outfit and think NOPE, not for me, next — and other times it’s a bit more puzzling whether it is or isn’t for me. I find that if I pin the look after four or five visits, I can put my finger more precisely on what I do or don’t like (the shoes, the lines, the pattern) and how I might want to try the look for myself.

5) Start trying things on! Shopping, thrifting, clothes swaps… they’re all good. If you have similar-sized friends, try to do a closet declutter event at the same time. Services like Stitch Fix can also be great because they can force you to try new things that are a little bit outside your comfort zone. (I would also say that our four-week work outfit challenge might be great here — lots of workwear inspiration and ideas!)
