Score Meghan Markle’s Favorite White Sneakers for Under $100

It’s nearly impossible to overstate our love of white sneakers. Versatile and comfy, they’re the footwear phenomenon we hope will never go away. One person we’re pretty sure shares our love of fashion’s current MVP trend? None other than future royal Meghan Markle. Prince Harry’s bride-to-be has been spotted in Reebok’s Classic Leather white sneaker (which retail for $ 75; nordstrom.com, amazon.com, asos.com, and urbanoutfitters.com) on several occasions, often wearing them to and from yoga class.

It’s easy to see why Meghan is a devoted fan of the style. With spring in full swing, you’d be hard pressed to find an outfit these kicks couldn’t pair with. From distressed jeans to floral dresses, they go with everything — and make a cool (and comfortable) alternative to traditional flats. Plus, they’re an ultra wearable way to get in on the chunky “dad sneaker” trend, without actually looking like your dad.

And best of all? They can easily be dressed up or down – they look as polished with Markle’s skinny jeans as they do with her high-end bag, which is why they’re a favorite for everyone from celebrities to regular girls who want to look cute on a Saturday without being held back by their shoes.

Fashion’s obsession with this shoe has yet to show any signs of slowing down. And with Meghan cosigning on this style, suffice it to say: the white sneaker is bound to stick around for a while. Long may it reign.

My Walmart baby haul: How I stretched $100 to buy all the essentials

by

Kelly Wilbanks

posted in Products

As a mother of three I’ve learned a thing or two about stretching my dollars. I’ve found I’m not a crazy coupon-er, although I use them when I can. I’ve learned to simplify things by shopping where I know I’ll find great selection, quality, and low prices. That is how I found myself at Walmart as I put together an essentials kit for a first-time mama friend.

As I walked the brightly lit aisles I noticed several brands on display I hadn’t seen there before. I found Ideal Baby swaddle blankets (made by Aden + Anais) for a fantastic price. There were some super cute gift box blanket sets from Bananafish and sweet nursery decor options. I also saw that Parent’s Choice now offers a range of great items, from bath accessories to crib sheets to their newly improved diapers.

I had a mission: to see how far I could stretch my dollars while still buying quality products for my friend. During my adventure I found some great things and I pinned a few items I’ll come back for later. Here is how I spent $ 100 to buy all the essentials (and some fun items) for this soon-to-be first time mama.

My haul:

1. Even though I am a cloth diapering parent I still like to use disposables for those first few weeks. In my opinion, new parents have enough to adjust to without throwing in extra loads of laundry. Walmart’s Parent’s Choice diapers have been revamped with many features I’ve depended on with my newborn, and their Premium line is brand new. My favorite feature will always be the pee line. Especially when the baby is still new and diaper changes are still “fun.” Another feature I appreciate is that the diapers are hypoallergenic – baby skin is so sensitive. I like to know I’m putting the gentlest materials I can on their little bums.

Parents-Choice-diaper-Collage

2. I always buy sensitive wipes for newborns. It’s better to be safe than sorry. My first daughter had zero sensitivities, but my middle child needed products formulated for sensitive skin. These Parent’s Choice wipes are fragrance-free, super gentle, and super reasonably priced.

parents-choice-baby-wipes

3. I love swaddle blankets because you can use them in so many practical ways. There’s the obvious — swaddle your baby. Muslin blankets are the best for this because they are breathable and great for summer or winter. You can use also use these blankets as a cover on a stroller, car seat, or for nursing.

ideal-baby-swaddle-blanket

4. These are the only pacifiers my children will use. I even tried other brands and was told they were yucky. Not every baby will take a pacifier, but these have been a staple in my home since 2012.

philips-avent-soothie

5. I like to give a little sampler like this to future mamas because it gives them a chance to see how well they like the product before buying the big version. It’s also nice to just have this on hand if traveling.

tiny-traveler-baby-soap-sampler

6. This is not an essential, but I think most parents are pretty excited to share that they have a baby — even if it’s to every driver they encounter on the road.

baby-on-board

7. These were a fun find — cotton crib sheets from Parent’s Choice, in gender-neutral patterns and colors. Perfect for mixing and matching with pops of color!

parents-choice-crib-sheets

8. There is some debate about how often we should bathe our babies. But there is no debate about how slippery they become when they are all soaped up. This is a simple sling that comes with two warmer wings to help keep your baby warm while bathing.

summer-infant-bathtub

9. I loved this cute unisex take-home outfit. It’s nice to have a few items like this that button in the front when your baby’s umbilical cord is healing.

gerber-take-me-home-set

10. We haven’t always needed gripe water, but when we did, we needed it STAT. I like to provide parents with gripe water because it really helped our daughters when they had tummy troubles.

parents-choice-gripe-water

11. Binkies get lost — like, all the time. Especially right now as we’re trying to steer our 2-year-old away from using them because she drops them everywhere. This Nuby Pacifinder keeps the binky clipped to your baby’s clothing — or at least makes the missing pacifier a lot easier to find.

nuby-pacifier-finder

12. Baby hangers are an often-overlooked baby item, but they really help with organization. You can get 10 hangers for $ 1.00 in-store at Walmart. This really helped me stretch my budget while providing something super-helpful.

baby-toddler-hangers

13. This is a slow-flow bottle that has a sweet design. All the pieces pictured are included. I like the sleek design because they are easier to store.

parents-choice-baby-bottle

14. We use this rinse cup all the time in our house. It keeps the water from flowing down your baby’s face during a bath because the flexible side creates a seal. The two water compartments distribute water evenly so it doesn’t all come out at once.

parents-choice-bath-rinser

15. This last item I bought on a whim because it was just so cute, and appropriate. This is a “boy” plaque, but I just love it for either sex. My daughters are always having adventures too (Adventure Begins plaque, $ 3.97). You’ll find more sweet nursery options at Walmart Baby Nursery Decor.

Adventure-begins-after-nap1

I chose these items because I found them really helpful the first few months with each of my girls. I chose to shop at Walmart because it saves me time and money — two things I don’t have a lot of with three kids 5 and under.

If I’d wanted to simplify thing further I could have shopped online too. My hubby just happened to be home the day I needed to shop, so I went out, but usually I’m stuck home with a morning and an afternoon napper. I love that I can just as easily shop online and receive savings whenever I choose the ship-to-store* option.

Guess how much all this was? My total was $ 99.66 before taxes. Walmart had great prices on a lot of name-brand items — not to mention their own new-and-improved brand, Parent’s Choice. I know from experience that this mama will use all of these items as she transitions into motherhood. I’m glad to bridge the experience-gap and bless my friend with fun finds.

What essential baby item do you give to new mamas?

This post is sponsored by Walmart.  All opinions are truthful and my own.

This Year’s Golden Globes Swag Bag Includes a $320 Designer Purse and a $100 Facial in a Box

While most nominees at the 2018 Golden Globes won’t walk away with one of the coveted statuettes, everyone will still win something.
The 75th annual Golden Globe awards, which air live on NBC this Sunday, are once again giving out swag bags to this year’s attendees that have high-end merchandise ranging from designer bags to upscale beauty product.
The luxe gift bags, which include a men’s and women’s option, have become a staple of awards season — though the Golden Globes gift bags are kicking off the 2018 awards season with some surprisingly affordable options.
MONEY took a look at this year’s gift bags, which was first reported by People, and ranked the items from most to least expensive. Many of the beauty products are items even ordinary consumers can afford to pamper themselves with, like this $ 10 L’Oréal mascara.
And for those who really want to treat themselves, the priciest items on both lists are bags – a Kate Spade studded leather tote retailing for $ 328 for women and an Away Travel carry-on suitcase retailing for $ 225 for men.

Best Champagnes Under $100, $500, $1000, and Beyond

It’s that time of the year again to celebrate! Traditionally, Champagne has been the drink of choice for a toast, and here at Gentleman’s Gazette, we thought it would be nice to suggest some names with a good price-pleasure ratio. Good reading and happy holidays!

What Is Champagne?

In technical terms, Champagne is the sparkling wine produced exclusively in a namesake region in the north of France. It undergoes a second fermentation inside the bottle, giving the wine its precious bubbles. Many countries have their own sparkling wines: Cava from Catalonia’s famous Penedès wine region in Spain; Franciacorta from Lombardia, which some consider a serious rival – in quality and prices – to Champagne, made with the same grapes; Brazilian sparkling espumantes, considered by Steven Spurrier (of Decanter magazine) “the best sparkling wine in the Southern Hemisphere”; Sekt from Germany; California sparkling wines, most produced by top French Maisons, just to name a few.

But what makes Champagne great is its aromatic complexity, the aging capacity of vintage cuvées and, of course, the allure of the world’s most loved wine.

With a complex story (unfortunately, too long to be told here), Champagne became the drink for celebrations. Churchill (or was it Napoleon?) quipped, “I could not live without Champagne. In victory I deserve it. In defeat I need it.”

Riedel Veritas Champagne glass

Riedel Veritas Champagne glass

It is better drunk with a wider glass (like this Riedel Veritas Champagne) than with flutes: the modest girth of the flute does not allow the aromas to develop properly. And it allows the perlage, the fine string of “pearls”, to form in the inner walls of the glass and run vertically to the surface of the wine, where they escape. With Champagne, the bubbles are an additional tasting element (besides color, aromas, and flavor) that you want to preserve. Before swallowing the wine, close your lips and let the bubbles form a foam. Try to chew it with the tongue: the firmer the foam, the better the Champagne.

A vintage or millesimé Champagne is the product of a single harvest (indicated on the label), reflecting the virtues of that crop; a NV or non-vintage Champagne is the result of a blend of many different wines from various crops, and it reflects the style of the Maison that they try to replicate year after year.

Now, take a look at the Champagnes we have selected for you, with options for every budget.

Under $ 100

It is not the easiest task to find great bubbly under $ 100, but a few names come to mind. These bottles deliver great taste, have excellent acidity – one of the most desirable Champagne characteristics – and elegance.

Piper Heidsieck Brut

Piper Heidsieck Brut

Piper Heidsieck Brut ($ 50) – With 93 points by Wine Spectator, this Champagne is one of the best buys around. You’ll find citric notes, brioche, flowers, and ripe white fruits in a creamy texture and a full body. It is the blend of over 100 crus, with a majority of Pinot Noirs and a small part of Pinot Meunier from Grande et Petite Montagne de Reims region.

Bollinger Brut Special Cuvée

Bollinger Brut Special Cuvée

Bollinger Brut Special Cuvée ($ 65) – Even though 007 has chosen other Champagnes in the past, presently his preference goes to Bollinger. Wine Spectator magazine awarded 94 points to this wine, considered full bodied and with good acidity. It is a non-vintage wine, meaning it will be a good portrait of the Maison style.

Roederer Brut Vintage 2008

Roederer Brut Vintage 2008

Roederer Brut Vintage 2008 ($ 70) – Louis Roederer is one of the last independent and family-run Champagne houses, founded in the same year as the United States of America. Elegant and light, this Champagne reflects perfectly the excellent vintage of 2008. It may benefit from a few more years of bottle aging, thanks to its structure.

Billecart-Salmon Brut Rosé

Billecart-Salmon Brut Rosé

Billecart-Salmon Brut Rosé ($ 80) – With a medium to full body, red fruits, and a mineral touch, this is one of my favorite rosé Champagnes. The Maison, founded in 1818, is also independent and family-run, with its directors belonging to the 6th generation. Try it with lobster medallions and see if it deserves the 95 points bestowed by James Suckling.

Gosset Grand Blanc de Blancs Brut

Gosset Grand Blanc de Blancs Brut

Gosset Grand Blanc de Blancs Brut ($ 85) – Some say that a company’s age is a good sign of quality, and Gosset – established in 1584 – certainly endorses this saying. In their caves at Épernay, one of Champagne main production centers, they produce this Blanc de Blancs (meaning that it was made exclusively with Chardonnay grapes) with floral notes, apricot, and plum, besides a refreshing citrus flavor.

Ruinart Rose NV

Ruinart Rose NV

Ruinart Rose NV ($ 94) – Ruinart was the first to sell rosé Champagne – precisely on March 14, 1764, according to the historians at the Maison. Founded in 1729, it was also the first wine producer to sell exclusively Champagne – “wine with bubbles”, as the company ledgers state. It will deliver red fruits like cherry and strawberry, as well as brioche notes.

Under $ 500

Here you will find many tête de cuvée, the prestige wines of each Champagne Maison. Limited production, great care in grape and vineyard selection, and more often than not, a long period over the lees – the solid residues of the yeasts that provoked the second fermentation and the bubbles – are the reasons for a higher price.

Billecart Salmon Nicolas Francois Billecart Cuvee 1999

Billecart Salmon Nicolas Francois Billecart Cuvee 1999

Billecart Salmon Nicolas Francois Billecart Cuvee 1999 ($ 140) – A medium-bodied Champagne produced with Chardonnay from Côte des Blancs and Pinot Noir from Montagne de Reims, rendering tribute to the founder of the Maison. We find lightly toasted almonds, pear pie, dried dates, and a floral touch. It will be at its best if drunk now.

Piper Heidsieck Rare, Vintage 2002

Piper Heidsieck Rare, Vintage 2002

Piper Heidsieck Rare, Vintage 2002 ($ 150) – This Brut Champagne deserved 97 points from Wine Spectator, one of their highest ratings for a sparkling wine, very close to the 98 points given to the Krug Clos d’Ambonnay 1998 (selling for $ 2400 each). In WS comments, we find it “impeccably balanced and silky, with finely honed acidity shaping the expansive flavors of toasted brioche, crushed blackberry, lemon preserves and honey, revealing hints of Frangelico liqueur and smoked nut.”

Krug Grand Cuvée

Krug Grand Cuvée

Krug Grand Cuvée ($ 170) – Before you ask, the French Maison and California’s Charles Krug families are not related – not that we know of. This Champagne is the entry-level label of the brand, but don’t let this fact mislead you. Krug itself is a premium producer, and this Grand Cuvée is a product of some 120 wines from 10 vintages or more, a full-bodied wine, with white flowers, pears, and a lengthy finish.

Laurent Perrier Grand Siècle

Laurent Perrier Grand Siècle

Laurent Perrier Grand Siècle ($ 180) – Founded in 1812, the Maison produces this Grand Siècle label since 1959: it is the first cuvée prestige made with a blend of three exceptional vintages (previously, every prestige Champagne was made with wines from the same year). It is a Chardonnay/Pinot Noir blend, with toasted almonds, honey, hazelnuts, and brioche to the nose: a great companion for a refined dinner.

Pol Roger Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill 2002

Pol Roger Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill 2002

Pol Roger Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill 2002 ($ 210) – Some say that the greatest Briton drank 42,000 bottles of Champagne between 1908 and his death in 1965. Ever the master in the art of living well – and also, well beyond his means! –, Churchill was a good friend of Mme. Odette Pol-Roger, whom he met in a party in 1944, but her Champagne had been his favorite for a long time. In 1984, the Maison created the Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill, with a majority of Pinot Noir: its brioche and white fruit aromas produce an elegant wine.

Louis Roederer Cristal

Louis Roederer Cristal

Louis Roederer Cristal ($ 220) – Any best Champagne list would be incomplete without the wine created for a king – or better, for the Tsar Alexander II of Russia. Arguably one of the first prestige Champagnes – Decanter magazine mentions that the title should go to Dom Pérignon 1921, launched in 1936 – its bottle is clear (originally it was made of crystal, thus its name) and has a flat bottom, all to differentiate this wine from the Champagnes drunk by the Tsar subjects. A comment found in the website www.champagneclub.com says that “The wine is made since 1970 solely in stainless steel tanks with grapes from their own vineyards in Aÿ, Verenay, Verzyand and Cumiéres, mainly Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from Avize and Mesnil. Its style is ultrasophisticated with a wild silky softness in combination with nutty fireworks backed by exotic fruitiness in a caramel filled body.”

Dom Pérignon P2 Brut 1998

Dom Pérignon P2 Brut 1998

Dom Pérignon P2 Brut 1998 ($ 360) – The “P2” stands for Plénitude Deuxième, the “second plenitude” of the wine. The concept, according to the Maison Chef de Cave Richard Geoffroy, is a series of stages during the wine’s development on its lees which, once it is disgorged (depleted of the sediments), can represent ” different expressions of the same vintage”. In this case, we are talking about 12 years over the lees. Its tasting notes are honeysuckle, orange-colored fruits, and toasted almonds; its creamy chewiness is followed by a smoky, full energy finish.

Under $ 1000

All we said about the second range Champagnes is present in this selection, but in an even more refined, precise way.

Moët MCIII

Moët MCIII

Moët MCIII – ($ 470) – Mixing traditional and futuristic elements, Moët & Chandon – the “M” in LVMH – created the MCIII, where MC stands for the Maison name and the Roman number 3 suggests the production process: a Grand Cru vintage Champagne is blended with unoaked and oaked still wines. Its aroma palate brings up candied citrus fruits, plums, nectarines, dried figs and dates, vanilla and nutmeg. A promising new star in the Champagne firmament and the Maison’s tête de cuvée.

Salon Brut Blanc de Blancs Le Mesnil, 2006

Salon Brut Blanc de Blancs Le Mesnil, 2006

Salon Brut Blanc de Blancs Le Mesnil, 2006 ($ 530) – Salon is a single cru Champagne, produced with a single grape: Chardonnay. The Maison has a parcel with 2.48 acres, “Le Jardin de Salon”, as well as other 19 small parcels in Mesnil-sur-Oger, a grand cru of the Côte des Blancs terroir. Its aromas evoke white flowers, citrus zest, brioche, fresh hazelnuts, and more, with an incredible complexity but fine acidity, enabling it to age for 25-30 years. Wine Enthusiast gave it the rare note of 100 points.

Above $ 1000

It’s fair to question if a Champagne warrants such a price, but we could not resist. Originally, we thought of limiting our selection to Champagnes up to $ 1000, but there are two exceptions which forcefully represent, in our opinion, what makes Champagne such a prized wine.

Krug Clos du Mesnil

Krug Clos du Mesnil

Krug Clos du Mesnil ($ 1300) – The grapes (Chardonnay) for this Blanc de Blancs come from a tiny vineyard of 4.5 acres in the center of Mesnil-sur-Oger, enclosed (thus the “Clos”) by a wall since 1698. The 2000 vintage spent 10 years in the cellars and has notes such as gingerbread, candied lemon rind, vanilla, and heliotrope, with a long and lasting finish. The critics gave it 94 (Robert Parker) and 97 points (Wine Spectator). Think grilled giant prawns or lobster salad with citrus fruits to go with it.

Krug Clos d'Ambonnay

Krug Clos d’Ambonnay

Krug Clos d’Ambonnay 1998 ($ 2400) – When Krug decided to create a Champagne with the best Pinot Noir grapes, they searched Ambonnay, a grand cru that already supplied Krug. In 1991, they found a walled parcel on the south-eastern slope of the Montagne de Reims with only 1.68 acres. Its walls are a little newer than Clos du Mesnil’s, dating from 1766. The first vintage of Clos d’Ambonnay (1995) was released in 2007. The bottles age for over 12 years and due to the small size of the vineyard, production is also small (5,000 bottles). This Champagne shows aromas of apples, toffee, nuts, toasted bread, with a creamy mousse and long finish.

Conclusion

Champagne can often be a serious investment, but a great bottle is warranted on special occasions! What bottles have you encountered at various price points that have exceeded your expectations?

The NFL Tried to Bribe Players with $100 Million to Stop Kneeling and Protesting During Games, It Didn’t Work

The NFL tried to buy their players off with almost $ 100 million so they’d stop protesting at games — but no deal was made.

via TMZ:

The NFL recently proposed a deal in which they’d contribute $ 89 million over seven years to 2 organizations focused on African-American causes, as well as to the Players Coalition so they could use the money for whatever causes they wanted.

In exchange, the NFL wanted the National Anthem protests to end — but the deal seems to have failed. Many players continued to kneel and demonstrate during this week’s games.

The L.A. Chargers’ left tackle Russel Okung raised his fist during the National Anthem Sunday, and the Oakland Raiders’ Marshawn Lynch remained seated for the song. L.A. Rams player Robert Quinn raised his fist as well, and other players linked arms in solidarity.

At least 6 other players between Miami, New Orleans and San Francisco all took a knee after some of them publicly raised issues with the proposed deal from their bosses.

We’re happy the players kneeled stood their ground.

Soldier’s Widow: Rep. Wilson ‘100% Correct’ About Trump’s ‘Insensitive’ Call

The widow of a fallen U.S. soldier killed in Niger this month appeared on Good Morning America, speaking publicly for the first time since his death and the subsequent media firestorm over President Trump’s “insensitive” sympathy phone call. Myeshia Johnson, widow of Sgt. La David Johnson, explained to George Stephanopoulos that on that phone call, “the president said that ‘he knew what he signed up for but it hurts anyways’ and it made me cry because I was very angry at the tone of his voice and how he said it.” She continued: “He couldn’t remember my husband’s name. The only way he remembered my husband’s name because he told me he had my husband’s report in front of him and that’s when he actually said La David. I heard him stumbling on trying to remember my husband’s name and that hurt me the most because if my husband is out here fighting for our country and he risks his life for our country, why can’t you remember his name?” Rep. Frederica Wilson (D-FL), a family friend and mentor of the solider’s, famously overheard the call and told the media it was “insensitive,” leading to an ongoing feud with the White House, in which Trump called her a “liar.” Johnson finally addressed that spat, telling ABC: “Whatever Ms. Wilson said was not fabricated. What she said was 100 percent correct… Why would we fabricate something like that?” Trump responded to Johnson later Monday in a tweet, writing: “I had a very respectful conversation with the widow of Sgt. La David Johnson, and spoke his name from beginning, without hesitation!”

This Man Has Bet $100 Million That He Can Make Americans Love Soccer

Most people turn to driving for Uber or doing odd jobs for Task Rabbit as a side hustle. For billionaire Stephen M. Ross, it’s starting an international soccer tournament in the United States.

Launched in 2013, the International Champions Cup was based around his epiphany that American fans would pay top dollar “to see the best teams and players” in the world. In formatting this new tournament, Ross championed the idea of consolidating what used to be a series of one-off friendly matches into a month-long competition with a trophy. In recent years it has expanded beyond the U.S. to encompass multiple continents, with several matches in China and Singapore this year.

Ross, who owns the NFL’s Miami Dolphins but made his fortune through real estate and is worth $ 7.4 billion, first started kicking the idea around in 2011 while watching F.C. Barcelona play Mexican club Gaudalajara at the Dolphins’ stadium in Miami Gardens. The game attracted over 70,000 fans – at the time, the biggest soccer crowd in Florida’s history.

Getting the I.C.C. up and running wasn’t easy — it took time to build a rapport with the best teams, as well as a “significant up front investment,” according to his business partner Matt Higgins, a former New York Jets exec with whom he founded RSE Ventures – a collection of sports-related businesses.

By his own estimates, Ross has invested over $ 100 million into the I.C.C. “We’ve made a lot of mistakes, and we’ve lost a good deal of money,” he says. “But I really believe that in the long term, this is what America wants to see.”

This year’s edition is poised to make a large impact, boasting the best line up yet — including the world’s top teams: Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, and Juventus. The 15 participating clubs have a combined market value of $ 8.7 billion, or an average of $ 580 million, according to industry experts Transfermarkt.

The tournament has seemingly caught on: The first nine matches played across the U.S. drew a total of 528,121 fans, with an average of 58,680 per game. With three games still left, this is already higher than last year’s comparable average of 57,081. Two attendance records have been broken so far this year, too, with 82,104 fans attending Barcelona’s 2-1 defeat of Juventus at MetLife Stadium last weekend, and 93,098 in attendance for Manchester City ‘s 4-1 victory over Real Madrid at the L.A. Coliseum earlier this week.

Brendan McDermid—ReutersReal Estate developer and sports entrepreneur Stephen Ross speaks during a news conference to announce the 2015 International Champions Cup North America in New York April 28, 2015.

The marquee matchup, dubbed the “El Clasico Miami,” is set for this Saturday. It will be the first-ever match in North America between Barcelona and Real Madrid, and the first outside of Spain in over 30 years. It’s one of the most historic rivalries in sports and Ross has capitalized on that aspect by putting on a series of events leading up to it, including concerts, branded parties, team rallies, art activations and more. Tickets have gone for between $ 250 and $ 4,500.

He says the goal is to create a “super-bowl type of event” that will become an annual fixture due to its enormous impact on South Florida — “not only the excitement it generates, but also what it does for the economy.”

Ross admits that in terms of the I.C.C.’s overall profitability, “we haven’t turned the corner yet, but we expect to this year.” Even though it has taken five years to do so, he says that perhaps the biggest stress isn’t related to the cash, but instead related to the grass.

In order to meet the standards of the world’s best teams, the fields have to be in tip-top shape. “In a lot of places we had to go in and put sod on top of the turf just for that game,” he says. “That’s one of the really delicate parts of putting these together that people don’t really think about.”

As the chairman of global real estate firm Related Companies, which he founded in 1972 and now has over $ 50 billion in assets owned or still under development, Ross has also gained widespread recognition as the man behind America’s largest private real estate project in history – the $ 15 billion Hudson Yards mega-development in New York City.

Despite not being a full-time gig, the I.C.C. is certainly taking up more time, adding hours to his already cramped day. He wakes up at 6:30 every morning to make sure he has time to work out at the gym, and when not at a business dinner, likes to take his wife out for date night.

“My family knows that I’m nuts – I’ve been successful and they’re not worried about it,” he said with a chuckle. “I love what I’m doing, and when you love what you’re doing, you’re never working a day in your life.”

45 Great Moments in Black Business – No. 38: Indecorp’s Buys a $100 Million White-Owned Bank

Over 45 days, Black Enterprise shares 45 milestone events among the nation’s largest black-owned businesses that have had widespread impact on black economic development and American industry across four decades. This is in tribute to the 45th anniversary of Black Enterprise’s iconic BE 100s yearly list of the largest black-owned companies.

Today we reveal No. 38 in the web series “Great Moments in Black Business.”

1988: Independence Bank of Chicago makes history with its acquisition of Drexel National, the first time ever an African American institution bought a healthy white-owned financial institution.

The advertisement revealed pictures of dead presidents—Lincoln, Jackson, Grant—with a catchy tagline: “We’d be very happy to see a few new faces at our banks.” The ad would also communicate the historic milestone as part of its customer service message: “We formed the largest black-owned bank holding company in America to serve the needs of communities like yours.”

(Image: File)

Roughly two years before that ad’s appearance in BLACK ENTERPRISE and other black periodicals, the late Alvin J. Boutte—the man lauded as “an entrepreneurial wizard in Chicago’s banking community”—performed a bit of deal-making magic. In 1988, the president and CEO of Indecorp, the holding company of the nation’s fifth largest black bank, Independence Bank of Chicago, completed the landmark acquisition of majority-owned Drexel National Bank, also located in the Windy City.

First Time Ever: Black Financial Institution Buys White-Owned Bank

The transaction, which brought Drexel under the Indecorp’s umbrella, marked the first time that a black-controlled financial institution purchased a solid white-owned banking establishment. In fact, at that time, the acquisition represented one of the largest deals in minority banking history.

(Image: Black Enterprise Magazine)

Analysts had estimated that Indecorp paid roughly $ 8 million—about 1.5 times book value —for Drexel. It was a bargain: Boutte gained $ 109 million in additional assets, $ 3 million in lending capacity, two new branches, $ 50 million in passbook savings accounts and Drexel’s 20,000 customers. One of the nation’s most prominent black financial institutions, Independence had assets of $ 118 million in 1998. Due to the groundbreaking acquisition, BE recognized Independence as the 1989 Bank of the Year.

By 1990, Indecorp had two institutions, Independence (No. 5) and Drexel (No. 6), on the 37-member BE Banks list. Collectively, Indecorp’s total assets were roughly $ 227 million. The 1990 bank list leader: rival Seaway National Bank of Chicago with assets of $ 164 million was now dwarfed by the size of its chief competitor. “We have acquired a sleeping giant with enormous earnings potential,” Boutte told BE at the time of the deal. “Our combined lending limit doubles with this acquisition. We can now take larger positions in deals throughout the city.”

Spirit of An Entrepreneur

The astute, focused Boutte was the right man to operate the institution. The spirit of an entrepreneur coursed through the Lake Charles, Louisiana, native and Xavier University-educated pharmacist who founded Independent Drug Stores and built it into the nation’s largest black-owned pharmacy chain. After selling his business, he was tapped to become president of Independence in 1970.

(Image: Black Enterprise Magazine)

Despite the bank being robbed on his first day, Boutte was extremely excited about its growth prospects. Launched in 1964 by investors like George Johnson, president of Johnson Products Co., the maker of haircare products such as Afro Sheen and Ultra Sheen, the bank had pretty much languished. Boutte put in place a multipronged plan that included developing an aggressive marketing campaign to attract corporate and government customers; assembling an experienced staff to execute on his initiatives; and expanding its loan portfolio.

Boutte Takes Assets to $ 100 Million

Over the course of a decade, he persuaded major corporations such as Shell Oil and American Hospital Supply to become clients as well as structured a $ 30 million revolving loan agreement with Sears, Roebuck & Co. with Independence leading a consortium of 60 minority banks to handle the retailer’s credit and lending needs. Moreover, he took over the deposits of two failed institutions, increasing the bank’s assets by more than 35% in 1979. Within 10 years, from 1970 to 1980, he increased assets from a mere $ 11 million to a whopping $ 100 million. During this period, he also created the holding company Indecorp as a vehicle to acquire other financial institutions.

After the Drexel deal in 1988, Boutte sought to take advantage of a deregulated banking environment by crafting an audacious strategy focused on acquisitions and alliances. With increased lending power, Indecorp broke new ground for black banks in areas like foreign currency exchange, trust services, and municipal bond underwriting. In fact, the holding company also became the first black institution to engage in a joint venture with a majority investment bank, Kane McKenna and Associates, the Chicago affiliate of Robert W. Baird, a diversified financial services firm.

A Setback

But Indecorp CEO Boutte and its Chairman George E. Johnson would fail in their bid to make history a second time by creating the first black interstate banking operation. By 1993, Boutte and George Johnson had decided to put Indecorp on the auction block. Its suitor: Omnibanc Corp., a Detroit-based black financial holding company with just $ 23 million in assets. Omnibanc’s Chairman William Johnson gained capital from former Detroit Pistons superstar Isiah Thomas and other investors to meet Indecorp’s $ 35 million price tag. After Boutte and William Johnson shook on the deal in September 1993, all parties had to wait for Federal Reserve approval.

The deal, however, unraveled due to timing and interest rates.

Over the course of a year, the Fed raised interest rates to keep inflation at bay. However, the hike depressed the value of Indecorp’s bond portfolio, which represented two-thirds of its assets. Reviewing the books again, Johnson decided to shave the offering price to $ 26 million. Boutte wouldn’t budge. The Fed’s approval expired December 1994 and so did the deal.

Indecorp was eventually sold. In 1995, much to the disappointment of thousands of black Chicagoans, majority-owned ShoreBank Corp., the holding company for South Shore Bank in Chicago, acquired Indecorp, which, in turn, lost its black ownership status.

As for Omnibanc: It was seized by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. and then the failed institutions were sold in 1988. The acquirer: ShoreBank Corp.
