Jaime Camil Opens Up About Jane the Virgin Costar Brooke Shields and Parenthood

Hopping on stage to grab a Golden Globe in front of Hollywood’s brightest stars is not what Jaime Camil is most excited about these days.

The 44-year-old Mexican actor could not conceal his nostalgic glee when it was announced that his boyhood celebrity crush Brooke Shields would join the cast of Jane the Virgin in its fourth season. “We were all in love with her when we were teenagers. Name one male specie that wasn’t in love with her in The Blue Lagoon. It’s incredible,” he tells PEOPLE CHICA of sharing scenes with the actress. “Her most important quality is what a sweetheart she is and what a beautiful human being she is. She is overwhelmingly nice.”

Shields’ five-episode arc, starting Feb. 9, will spice up the story line, according to Camil, and even have an impact on his character. “She is going to be a big part of Rogelio’s life, probably his new nemesis and that’s going to be fun.”

For an episode directed by Gina Rodriguez (who plays the titular Jane), Camil recently filmed his first scene with the legendary Calvin Klein model and remarked, “Dreams do come true.”

Not that his wife of four years, Mexican model Heidi Balvanera, has any reason to be jealous. Her husband is even more effusive about his family life. “That’s my best role, I love to be a father. My wife loves to be a mother, ” he says. “We are committed parents” to son Jaime Camil III, 3, and daughter Elena, 6. “We don’t have the 24-hour nanny.”

The foursome recently spent some quality time at a luxurious ski chalet, with requisite fireplace, in Lake Tahoe, one of the most scenic and slope-filled attractions in the States, courtesy of Airbnb. “I wanted to go to Lake Tahoe because I had never been. It was beautiful,” he says of their getaway. “I love to spend time with the family, it’s the most important thing for me.”

That includes keeping the romance alive with this wife, who turned 39 in September. “We have our date nights. We try to find time for ourselves,” he adds. “My New Year’s resolution is to live the here and now and continue to be a good parent for my kids, continue to be a good husband for Heidi.”

Camil keeps his brood in mind when choosing parts — the little ones appreciate their father’s animated efforts in particular. “I take on these voice-over roles because I know my kids are going to be very happy and excited to hear daddy’s voice on-screen,” says Camil, whose illustrated characters appear in major releases like The Secret Life of Pets as well as the TV series Elena of Avalor, whose Latin princess just happens to share a name with his daughter.

His children aren’t the only ones impressed with his animated endeavors: Coco, with its all Latin cast, took home the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Animated (Camil voiced Papa Rivera). And an upcoming Disney Channel collaboration has the busy actor raring to reconnect with his childhood self. “It’s a remake of a series that was super-hot in the ’80s that I used to watch when I was a kid.”

Of his success in English-language film and TV, the rising talent is grateful while noting that it didn’t come overnight: “It’s way more than what I ever expected. It wasn’t quick. I’ve been doing the pilot seasons and the auditions and I’ve been getting doors shut in my face for the past 10 or 12 years in the United States. So I guess it finally paid off.”

How the iPhone’s Health app helped authorities gather details about a brutal murder

Health App

In something of a bizarre story, the Health app on Apple’s iPhone may play a pivotal role in definitively proving who raped and murdered a young medical student in Germany late last year.

As detailed by the BBC, German authorities already have a suspect in custody, a man who we only know by Hussein K. As the story goes, Hussein K has already admitted his involvement, though some details regarding the murder still remain fuzzy. Incidentally, Hussein K refused to provide the pin code of his iPhone to investigators, thus prompting authorities to outsource the task to a Munich-based security firm which managed to hack into the device.

British Politician’s Girlfriend Sent Racist Texts About Meghan Markle

Henry Bolton, a British politician, is in hot water after his girlfriend, Jo Marney, made racist remarks about Meghan Markle.

Text messages obtained by The Mail on Sunday, on Sunday, January 14, reveal that the former model reportedly said that Prince Harry’s “black American” fianceé will “taint” the royal family with “her seed” and pave the way for a “black king.” She also described the former Suits actress as “obsessed with race,” a “dumb little commoner” and a “dumb little ‘actress’ that no one had heard of” with a “tiny brain.”

After the person she was texting called her a racist, Marney responded, “lol so what. Not wanting other races and cultures to invade your own culture doesn’t mean I hate their race. Just means I don’t want their cultures invading mine.”

Marney was immediately suspended from the United Kingdom Independent Party after the story broke.

Bolton, 54, who is in charge of the Ukip, was already facing criticism for his decision to leave the mother of his two children, Tatiana Smurova, for Marney, who he met in December. His new relationship with the 25-year-old has been the subject of scrutiny — and he is slated to attend a meeting to determine his future in the Ukip next Sunday.

In a statement to The Mail, Marney apologized and claimed her comments had been taken out of context, saying, “No offense was intended and, again, I apologize unreservedly for any such offense or hurt that my messages have caused to members of the public, members of Ukip, my friends, family and loved ones.”

This is not the first time Markle, who is biracial, has been on the receiving end of racism. In November 2016, shortly after they began dating, Prince Harry instructed Kensington Palace to issue a strongly worded statement in regards to a “wave of abuse and harassment,” that stated, “It is not right that a few months into a relationship with [Prince Harry] that Ms. Markle should be subjected to such a storm. He knows commentators will say this is ‘the price she has to pay’ and that ‘this is all part of the game.’ He strongly disagrees. This is not a game — it is her life and his.”

Harry and Markle announced their engagement at the end of November 2017 and plan to wed at Windsor Castle in May.

5 Myths About Why You’re Not Losing Weight

According to the Centers for Disease Control, more than a third of adults in the United States — 35.1% — are obese. And if you aren’t obese, defined by the CDC in adults as having a BMI of 30 or higher, chances are you’re at least overweight, as 70% of Americans are in this category (BMI between 25 and 29.9). Now, those are pretty heavy statistics.

National campaigns have been created. Exercise regimes and specialty diets have proliferated. Bloomberg even tried taking away your Big Gulp! But nothing seems to work to help society to ‘skinny.’ Where should we lay the blame?

“Despite all the attention, an unhealthy amount of body fat remains an insidious problem,” says Dr. Eleazar Kadile, an M.D. who specializes in treating patients with obesity and associated chronic disease. “Most of us know we’re facing a national health crisis, yet diets for millions of Americans continue to be based in heavily processed foods. Obese people often live in perpetual shame, and many others believe they are right to blame the overweight and obese for their problem.”

Despite a national push to promote nutritional education, the problem persists. Kadile agrees there is work to be done…but he argues that turning America into the ‘Obese Police’ and shaming the heavy isn’t helping matters. He’s one Dr. that is on the side of the overweight — saying that maybe it’s actually not their fault that they are heavy.

As the Director of the Center for Integrative Medicine in Green Bay, Wisconsin and author of “Stop Dying Fat,” Kadile blames not gorging and gluttony, but rather poor attitudes and lack of understanding for their contributions to the national crisis. Here the Dr. attempts to debunk five myths about being overweight or obese:

Myth: “It’s your fault that you’re fat.” Obesity is caused by complex imbalances within a person’s body and his or her environment, explains Dr. Kadile. Sure, imbalances are certainly exacerbated by poor dietary choices, but also by personal history and psychological patterns. Kadile holds that together, all of these causes— the physiological, psychological, social and environmental — create a vicious cycle that obese people are drawn into and unable to get out of.

Myth: Obese people are among the “fat and happy.” Society isn’t usually kind to large people. Everyday indignities include transportation troubles, advertising campaigns and in-store shopping geared toward smaller sizes, and national health campaigns that focus naively on diet and exercise to help those struggling with weight issues. Dr. Kadile laments that obese patients spend an average of nearly $ 1,500 more each year on medical care than other Americans, and says that often they are actually masters at suppressing their suffering and shame.

Myth: Obese and overweight people just need the right diet. There’s no shortage of diets that promise amazing results, but changing one’s weight — and entire lifestyle — is not as simple as it seems. What and how one eats are just the preliminary parts of an excessive body mass index level, according to Kadile. Other important factors to achieving a healthy BMI include good information regarding one’s health, sustained motivation to change, continuous learning, vigilance and an ability to be extremely honest. Everyone — yes, everyone — has trouble with some of those areas.

Myth: Food is not an obese individual’s friend; exercise is. Eat less; exercise more; lose weight – those have been the commandments in the ‘religion’ of weight loss. But most obese people have tried this and it hasn’t worked. The key is to target an obese person’s specific set of problems. “Sometimes, you need to eat fat – the right kind – in order to burn fat,” suggests Dr. Kadile. “And, many exercises can actually harm an obese person. You can’t impose cookie-cutter solutions to this complex problem and expect them to work.”

Myth: Fat people need to “just do it” – lose weight. This attitude is not based in reality; it’s an over-simplistic response for a frustrating problem. “Morbidly obese patients need plenty of preparation. When a patient comes to me,” says Kadile, “I go through a rigorous list of questions regarding medical and family history. I ask about eating, sleeping and activity patterns, as well as medical conditions, emotional patterns, stress histories, good times and bad times, etc. I also have them go through an extensive battery of medical tests. That’s the effective and safe way of doing it.”

In other words, obesity is a complicated epidemic, and suggesting a remedy of “just do it”… isn’t going to do it.

Everything You Need to Know About Curling for the 2018 Winter Olympics

Curling is our strange quadrennial winter sports obsession. Depending on one’s taste, it’s either a compelling chess match on ice, or glorified shuffleboard with no proper place in a global sporting spectacle. But once the opening ceremonies of the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics begin on Feb. 9, you — or someone you encounter regularly — will suddenly start caring about curling. You know, that winter Olympic sport with the stones and the brooms and that dartboard-looking-thing on the TV.

For NBCUniversal, the Olympics broadcaster, curling is a consistent ratings winner. CNBC goes from picking stocks to sweeping rocks during the Games, as the network will air hours of evening curling coverage during the Olympics.

So it pays to know the basics of the sport. Here’s what you need to know about curling’s rules, positions, scoring, equipment and more:

What is the history of curling?

The origin of curling traces back to 16th century Scotland, where the sport was played on frozen ponds and lochs. The first recorded match took place around 1541: a Scottish notary recorded a challenge between a monk at Paisley Abbey and a relative of the abbott. Scottish immigrants spread the sport to North America: the first Canadian curling club opened in Montreal in 1807, and the first American club appeared in Pontiac, Mich. in 1828. The Royal Caledonian Curling Club in Scotland, the so-called “mother club” of curling, wrote the first official curling rules in 1838.

Curling first appeared as a medal sport at the 1924 Olympics in Chamonix, France. Only the men held a tournament, and Great Britain won gold (the entire team was Scottish). Curling made five appearances as an Olympic demonstration sport — in Lake Placid in 1932, Garmisch-Partenkirchen in 1936, Innsbruck in 1964, Calgary in 1988 and Albertville in 1992 — before the sport was added to the Olympic program in Nagano in 1998. Since 1998, Canada has won three Olympic golds in curling on the men’s side — including the last three — while Switzerland and Norway each won one. Both Canada and Sweden have earned two women’s gold medals in curling; Great Britain won the women’s gold in 2002.

Olympic curling stones weigh between 38 and 44 pounds; the granite is harvested from Ailsa Craig, an island off the west coast of Scotland that resembles, from a distance, a curling stone.

How do you play curling and what are the rules?

A key driver of curling’s appeal is its relative simplicity. Though the sport may have unfamiliar terms, and thus seem complicated, it’s actually pretty easy to follow.

A curling match consist of 10 ends, which are equivalent to innings in baseball. In each end, the four players on both teams alternate throwing stones. The lead throws first, followed by the second, then the third — or vice-skip — then finally, the skip. Each of the four players on the competing teams throws two stones per end, for a total of 16 stones. The “skip” is the most important player on the team. The skip not only throws the last stone in an end — which often determines the scoring — but also directs the overall strategy.

To execute a shot, a curler pushes a foot off the hack, a piece of rubber akin to a starting block. The curler slides across the ice, or sheet, to the hog line, and must release the stone before it touches the line. The stone then heads for the house — the area with four concentric circles on the other side of the sheet that loosely resembles a dartboard. The house is the scoring area.

How does curling scoring work?

Only one team can score during a curling end. The team with the most stones closest to the curling bullseye — the button — is awarded points. So if, after 16 stones are thrown, Team A has a stone right on the button, and Team B has a stone a few feet off the button, Team A scores a point. If Team A had one stone on the button and a stone a few feet off the button, while Team B had a stone on the outer edge of the house, Team A scores two points.

The team that fails to score in an end gets the hammer, or the advantage of throwing the last stone, in the next end. If no stones remain in the house after an end, no points are awarded: the team with the hammer in a scoreless, or blank, end retains the hammer in the subsequent end. The team with the most points after 10 ends wins the match.

What’s with the curling brooms?

After a curler throws a stone, his or her teammates will often start sweeping the ice in front the stone as it glides down the ice. Why is sweeping the activity that requires the most exertion in this particular Olympic sport? Physics! The sweeping warms the ice and reduces friction, allowing the stone to travel farther and straighter. Depending on the path of the stone and its intended target, a team’s skip will instruct the other curlers to either start sweeping like a teen whose parents are returning home early to an illicit house party, or to lift their brooms.

What’s new for curling at the 2018 Winter Olympics?

A mixed doubles tournament! Olympic organizers have added a mixed doubles curling event to the PyeongChang program to complement the men’s and women’s competitions. Mixed doubles curling teams consist of just two players — a woman and a man — instead of the usual four players per team. Matches are eight ends long, not 10, and the two players alternate throwing five stones per end instead of eight: one player throws the first and last stones, while the other throws the second, third, and fourth rocks.

Mixed doubles adds a wrinkle. A sixth stone for each team isn’t thrown, but set on the ice before the start of the end. The stone of one team is positioned in the middle of the ice, guarding the house, while the other team’s stone is set in the house, near the button. The team with the hammer decides where the stone is positioned; if the team places its stone as the guard, however, the other team gets to take the last shot of the end.

Once per game — but not in tie-breaking “extra ends” — the mixed doubles team with the hammer can decide to exercise a “power play.” In the power play, the pre-positioned stones are shifted to the side.

In a perfect world, would curling power plays involve broomstick fighting and a penalty box like they do in hockey, rather than moving rocks around? Probably. But a more genteel game will do just fine. Mixed doubles scoring is the same as the traditional curling game. The team with the most stones closest to the button earns the points in that end.

Who are the American curling competitors at the Olympics?

For the third consecutive Olympics, John Shuster, 35, will serve as skip for the U.S. men’s team. He’s the first American men’s curler to make four Olympic squads; Shuster, a Chisholm, Minnesota native, was lead for the 2006 Olympic team that won bronze in Torino. Shuster’s Olympic skip record isn’t so sterling. Faced with high expectations after the 2006 bronze medal, the Americans finished last in Vancouver and ninth in Sochi.

Joining Shuster on the team are John Landsteiner — who competed with Shuster in Sochi — Tyler George and Matt Hamilton. Hamilton’s sister, Becca, made the U.S. women’s team, joining fellow first-time Olympians Nina Roth — the team’s skip — Tabitha Peterson and Aileen Geving.

The Hamilton siblings, who hail from McFarland, Wisconsin, will be busy in PyeongChang. Older brother Matt, 28, and sister Becca, 27, will represent the U.S. in mixed doubles.

Millions will be watching their PyeongChang power play.

Everything You Need To Know About ‘PUBG’s Zombies Mode

PUBG Zombies is a bit of an oddity. Brendan “PlayerUnknown” Greene’s original vision of a Battle Royale spawned from his desire to speed up the combat-focused parts of DayZ — a game ostensibly about surviving a zombie apocalypse. To make his vision a reality, he removed the zombies (and made dozens of other tweaks). It’s ironic, then, that so many players find themselves drawn to a PUBG mode which adds the shuffling undead back into the game.

Of course, there’s a twist here. The zombies in PUBG Zombies are controlled by players, not AI, and they drop alongside the humans. If you’re a human, you have to kill all the zombies — and there’s a lot of them. If you’re a zombie, you simply have to kill the humans. The mode itself started as a bit of a hack — though not the bad kind — and has grown into something of a phenomenon itself.

How To Play ‘PUBG’ Zombies

Getting into a game of Zombies is super easy, although it relies on there being a custom game available.

All you need to do, when at the main menu for PUBG, is click Custom Games and sort by Zombies in the filter. You should be able to see any available Zombies games — click on one from the list and you’re off and running.

Bear in mind, it’s highly unlikely that you’ll get to play as a human. It’s actually one of the problems with the mode in the eyes of Twitch streamer Stabbies, a PUBG Partner and the OCE region’s pre-eminent PUBG shoutcaster. Stabbies runs Customs games for Oceanic players on the regular, changing the rules of PUBG to create wildly varied game experiences. Modes like Demo Derby — where players only have cars — and Western War — where participants are limited to Win 94s and Revolvers — are extremely popular. But Stabbies has a firm rule against running Zombies as a mode.

“It’s fun, but it’s pretty boring if you’re a zombie,” Stabbies explained. “The rhythm of the game is thrown. In a regular game a lot of people drop down, gather loot and then all converge into a circle. But for Zombies that rhythm is ruined. You can’t loot as a zombie, it’s hard to communicate with other zombies and it’s generally not a lot of fun if you land near the survivors early and can’t form a giant horde with [your undead teammates].”

How To Play As A Zombie

That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t play Zombies, by any means. If you’re all about those brains, there’s a bunch of fun to be had. You just have to work for it. If you’re playing on the Zombies team, press Ctrl-T until it says “Voice Chat Unmuted” so you can hear your teammates. Try to get them to land somewhere central — School or Pecado are good options on each map. Zombies can’t use vehicles, so the closer to the middle of the map you are, the less time you’ll have to spend travelling to get into the circle.

If there are vehicles — the host can turn them off, but probably won’t — punch out the tyres by crouching next to them and hitting. It’s something to do, but it also restricts the Human player’s options when they come near.

You’ll probably have to make your own fun for a little while. The humans probably won’t come close until they absolutely have to — when the circle forces them to. Try to follow crates if you can — when you’re unarmed any weapon is powerful, but an M249 is more powerful than most.

When they come close, remember your strength is in numbers. While some of the zombies are bee-lining straight at the humans, see if you can predict where they’re going to run next and try to cut them off. If they manage to knock you, try to find a space where your teammates can get you back up — just like you would in regular PUBG.

Most importantly, have fun. You’re a zombie, just a cell in a larger organism. Victory comes when the humans die, regardless of whether or not you are the one who gets the kills — all the cells win when the organism wins.

How To Play As A Human

Right off the bat, you should know that as it currently works you’re unlikely to get to play as a Human in a Zombies mode custom game. Generally the lobby host will set it up so that they can control who plays on the human side — although very rarely you’ll find some true open lobbies. As custom game controls become more robust, hosts will ideally be able to assign people to certain teams for doing well as zombies and other things.

If you do manage to play as a Human, there’s a few things to keep in mind! Don’t carry too many heals, first of all. Once you start to really get hit by the swarm of zombies, your opportunities to stop will be near non-existent, so you’re really just wasting space carrying every First Aid Kit you can find. Instead, grab every bit of ammo you can. In regular PUBG, any of the other 96-99 players on the map could kill your enemies for you, but in Zombies only your squad can stop the Zombies menace.

Even if you think you got enough ammo, you probably didn’t. That moment when you realise you have to ration your ammunition — that you’ve been wasting it on speculative pot shots from a distance — that’s when the panic sets in.

When the swarm is upon you, be sure to juke as if your life depends on it — because it basically does. You can throw a few zombies off if you about face and run back at them for a few moments before continuing on your way. If you unequip your weapons until you’re going to use them, you run faster (which is also good to know for when you’re chasing the circle in regular PUBG).

The other key thing to do when playing as a Human is to realise that you’re only going to have fun if the Zombies are having fun. If you go in with the idea of victory as your key goal, and you play it like you’re chasing a chicken dinner, you’ll find the Zombies are more reluctant to return for another game. If you restrict yourself and your crew to only using vehicles for transport, or to not wearing armour, or ditching the 8x scopes, the zombies won’t feel like they’re completely out of options.

“You almost have to role-play it,” Stabbies said about playing as a Human. As a PUBG Partner he’s able to set up a Zombies Custom match, and the games we played together as humans were populated in seconds. “You don’t want it to be boring for the zombies [players] so you have to hold back. Everyone can have a good time [that way].”

The games he set up restricted us to just the Western War weapons, with the addition of sniper rifles. The only Automatic weapons available were the VSS, the Glock and anything we might get out of a crate — although Zombies flocked to the crates every time.

In our games, we didn’t finish zombies off until the last few circles, essentially rewarding the cheeky players who tried to attack us early with a second chance. We hopped out of our vehicles to fight, we ran for our lives when we had to, and it was obvious we were never going to win. But the Zombies seemed to have fun, and even though we didn’t win, so did we.

One other thing worth doing is turning off ReShade — which you’ll have on if you followed our guide. Something about the normal palette of colours in PUBG lends itself very well to the Zombie apocalypse. You can also fiddle with ReShade settings in-game to make things a bit more apocalyptic if you want — although make sure you save your settings for when you return to the regular game!

PUBG Zombies can be fun, but it requires a certain attitude from all involved. When everyone is in that mindset, it’s chaotic and terrifying — but for now those experiences can be few and far between. Fortunately there are dozens of other Custom Games happening at any time — maybe you’re better off checking those out instead! If you’re in OCE, try out Stabbies stream – he plays a heap of other games as well.

NBC Retracts ‘Presidential’ Tweet About Oprah Because Of Donald Jr.

The Trump family is already intimidated at the idea of Oprah running for President of the United States. After her epic speech at the 2018 Golden Globes, there were many calls for Oprah to run for office. As we all know, you no longer need political experience to be the leader of the free world. However, Oprah has experience with people, authenticity and managing to connecting to people’s souls by living her own truth — the exact opposite of 45. In addition, according to CNN, two sources claim she is “actively thinking” about running for president in 2020.

Even NBC tweeted, “Nothing but respect for OUR future president.” Well, Donald Trump Jr. lost it and slammed NBC for praising Oprah as the potential 46. See below:

Now, after Jr.’s doofus ways, NBC deleted the tweet, releasing this statement, “The tweet was sent out by a third-party agency for NBC Entertainment in real-time during the live broadcast. It is in reference to a joke made during the opening monologue and not meant to be a political statement. We have since removed the tweet.”

Of course Trump Jr. gloated on social media:

Not sure if Trump Jr. is a “stable genius” like his daddy, but he needs a grammar lesson. “Seems that @nbc took down there tweet.” Should be “their” tweet, but we digress. The Trumps should be very afraid. Oprah created one of the most successful television shows in history, built a network and built schools in Africa. No Russia ties, no bankruptcies  and she didn’t start off with a million dollar loan from her father. Oprah Winfrey is more presidential than Trump will ever be. #Oprah2020

5 Things to Know About Lindsey Vonn as She Goes for the Gold at the 2018 Winter Olympics

After missing the 2014 Olympics in Sochi because of a knee injury, Lindsey Vonn—the most successful women’s ski racer in history—is set to return to the Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea in 2018, where she’ll race in speed events and try to add to her Olympic medal haul.

On this season’s World Cup circuit, which serves as an elite-level tune-up for the Olympics, Vonn has already secured a victory, an emotional win at at Super-G event in Val d’Isere, France. She fought tears because her father, who had never seen her race at the venue, was in the crowd. Over the New Year’s holiday, Vonn returned home to Colorado and put in some training time in Aspen.

With the 2018 Winter Olympics beginning on Feb. 9, here are five things to know about Vonn:

1. Vonn’s Injuries Don’t Keep Her Down

Despite being bitten by injuries throughout her remarkable career, Vonn, 33, has compiled more World Cup wins—78—than any female ski racer in history. At the 2006 Torino Olympics, for example, she crashed during a training run and had to be airlifted off the mountain. The accident, however, didn’t keep her from competing in the downhill, where she finished eighth. Crashes did end her 2013, 2014 and 2016 seasons prematurely.

In November, Vonn broke her right arm in a training crash in Cooper Mountain, Colorado. And in December, Vonn hurt her back during a Super-G race in St. Mortiz, Switzerland. She roiled in pain after crossing the finish, and came in 24th place. But just a week later Vonn was back atop a podium, winning in Val d’Isere.

“I guess I’m not a washed-up old hag,” Vonn said after her victory. “I think I proved myself, and karma definitely comes back around. I’ve got some good karma coming my way.”

2. Vonn Has Taken on Trump

Vonn waded squarely into America’s contentious political climate when she told CNN in December that she would not accept an invitation from President Donald Trump to visit the White House. Traditionally, American Olympians come to Washington for a White House stop after the Games. “I hope to represent the people of the United States,” Vonn said, “not the president.”

While some people praised Vonn, the skiier shared on Instagram that others had hoped she would break her neck for “being anti-Trump.”

As I head to France for the next races, I would like to share with you my reflections from the past few days. I've received a tremendous amount of feedback, both positive and negative, about my recent CNN interview. The point that I was trying to articulate is that all Olympic athletes represent their nation as a whole, and are not representatives of their government or any specific political figure or party. None of us work tirelessly for years on end to compete in the Olympics on behalf of Democrats or Republicans. The Olympics are a non-political event, a chance for everyone to put aside their differences and be on the same "team.". That does not mean that Olympic athletes don't have political opinions. As an American, I am extremely proud that our great nation was founded on principals and ideals where citizens can express our opinions openly. It is a privilege that some others around the world don't have. I am proud to be an American, and I want our country to continue to be a symbol of hope, compassion, inclusion and world unity. My travels around the world have recently made clear that this is no longer how people view the United States. You cannot pick up a newspaper or turn on the TV in Europe without noticing how people are questioning our direction. It seems to me that we must lead with understanding and strive for unity in our relationships throughout the world. As for myself, my recent comments opened up my eyes as to how divided we are right now. It is hurtful to read comments where people are hoping I break my neck or that God is punishing me for being "anti-Trump." We need to find a way to put aside our differences and find common ground in communicating. Is it wrong to hope for a better world? All of this is much bigger than skiing and the Olympics. I am going to take the next two months to focus on what I can do and right now that is competing for my country. In doing that, I will be hoping that we Americans can still be that "shining city on a hill."

3. She Is Already a Record Breaker

Vonn is shooting to break the all-time record for World Cup skiing wins, male or female, which is currently held by Ingemar Stenmark of Sweden; he won 86 races from 1973-1989. While most of Vonn’s victories have come in the speed disciplines of the downhill and Super G, she’s the rare elite skier to have won races in both speed and technical events. She owns four giant slalom wins, two victories in the slalom, and five in the combined, which mixes the downhill and slalom.

Her 39 wins in the downhill, and 28 in the Super G are an all-time mark. She’s tied with Stenmark for most discipline titles, with 16. Vonn has been the best downhill skiier in eight different seasons, while also winning 5 Super G titles and 3 championships in the combined.

At the Olympics, Vonn won a downhill gold medal, and Super G bronze, at the 2010 Games in Vancouver. After missing Sochi, the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang are likely her last chance to increase her Olympic medal count.

4. Vonn’s Training Workout Is No Joke

To ski speed events, athletes need superior strength to maintain balance and control. Her much-followed exercise routine includes doing situps on a wrecking ball, pull-ups with a chain tied around her waist, and throwing medicine balls to the ceiling.

….Watch my sis try this at the end 🤣

A post shared by L I N D S E Y • V O N N (@lindseyvonn) on

5. Vonn Has Her Own Line of Gear

In late November, Under Armour launched the Lindsey Vonn Signature Collection, an apparel line under her name. Each piece is named after a milestone of Vonn’s career: the $ 500 Louise Jacket, for example, is a nod to Lake Louise, Alberta, a place nicknamed Lake Lindsey because of her success there (she’s finished on the Lake Louise podium 25 times).

Vonn’s other sponsors include Red Bull, Oakley, and the Hershey Company. And her 2016 book, Strong Is The New Beautiful, reached the New York Times best seller list for sports titles.

The next chapter of Vonn’s storied career will be written soon in South Korea.

‘Family Is the Most Important Thing’: Everything Chip & Joanna Gaines Have Said About Parenting

Not only will Chip and Joanna Gaines be producing a number of product lines, publishing another book, and running their Waco, Texas-based empire, the Fixer Upper couple will also be getting ready for a baby on the way.

The pair has always put family first for their four children: sons Drake, 12, and Duke, 9, and daughters Ella, 11, and Emmie Kay, 7. “Family is the most important thing in the world,” Joanna, 39, told PEOPLE in September.

“I feel a little bit like a drill sergeant sometimes. Some elements of my personality, as a parent, I’m not real crazy about,” Chip, 43, told PEOPLE in December 2016 about his parenting style.  “I grew up in an environment that was pretty much ‘back by dark’ — didn’t generally know what we were doing, and it was all good, clean fun. So I thought, ‘Oh, I’m gonna be a wild parent.’ ”

On the other hand, Joanna admitted that she’s “little more laid back than I thought I’d be,” telling PEOPLE: “ certain things that I really care about, but I think the funny part, with Chip, is just the video games, the TV. That’s where he kinda gets a little strict. It’s, ‘You go play outside.’ ”

RELATED: Here’s Everything to Expect from Chip and Joanna’s Final Season

From dance parties in the middle of the night to bonding over arts and crafts as well as playing dress-up, the parents have been documenting special moments with their kids on social media to their over nine million followers.

“I want my kids to date, I want them to go out,” Chip shared. “I just remember great experiences as a kid, you know? Driving your car for the first time, picking up a young lady on a date for the first time. All those were little milestones to some extent.”

Joanna and Chip have previously expressed that they want their kids to have a life away from the national spotlight their fame has drawn. “They’re so young, and we want to give them the chance to have a normal childhood,” the mother-to-be said.

The filming schedule for Fixer Upper was a particularly exhausting one that required Chip and Joanna to film for 11 months out of the year since they began back in 2013.

“ would ask, ‘Mom and Dad, do you guys have to film again today? When is this going to be over?” Chip explained to PEOPLE in October. “The kids were so young when we started. Fast-forward to today and our oldest is almost a teenager — they’re all growing up so quickly,” Joanna added.

Ending their popular show meant slowing down because no matter how much it meant to them, it wasn’t worth risking what’s most important: their relationship and their family.

“Jo and I don’t want to find ourselves years from now realizing there were warning signs letting us know we were exhausted. We would rather stop here, where we still feel we’re in a really good place,” he said.

Back in July 2016, Joanna shared a viral Facebook post about the importance of instilling lessons in children that you hope will stick.

“You sow seeds early on and work hard to be intentional and then over time you move on to new lessons and challenges. Then one day you look up and the seeds you planted in your little children’s hearts are now in full bloom. Be encouraged today to keep pressing in and tending to their hearts. It will be worth it,” she said.

While they had never shut down the idea of expanding their family, the decision to end their popular HGTV series after five seasons may have presented more opportunities to think about welcoming another child.

“We had four babies right before the show started, and then we’ve had zero babies since the show started,” Chip told Houston ABC affiliate, KTRK in November. “For me, I’m really excited to go back and try to maybe . . . try to make some more babies,” he said.

And in June, Joanna shared with PEOPLE that she would consider trying for more than one child. “I would love another baby — or twins! The kids are always asking me, ‘Mom, can you have another baby?’ But Chip thinks we’re done,” she said.

The couple hasn’t ruled out a return to TV, but for now, plan to enjoy time together, time with their kids, big breaks like their recent trip to Italy and pet parenting five dogs, a handful of cats, cows, horses, chickens and goats.

What is so unique about this island?

The Caribbean is pretty darn awesome, right? Where else do you get to enjoy the best weather in the world, swim in clear blue oceans, and sip on the most divine cocktails known to man?! The Caribbean regularly ranks on the lists of so many intrepid travelers, but where to go? There’s so much choice; in fact, there’s almost too much choice. But, there is one Caribbean island that we feel stands out above the rest.

The island in question is Aruba! This might be an island you’ve heard of before, but you may never have been there. If you’re looking for the perfect way of escaping the cold weather and heading for more tropical climates, Aruba should be the first name on your lips. Of the thousands of islands in the Caribbean, this is the one that seems to sit a cut above the rest – we’re going to examine why.

It’s a small island

You might not think this is a decisive factor, but Aruba is actually much smaller than you might have thought. It’s only 19 miles long, and around 6 miles wide, and this makes it very easy to get around and travel to where you want to be. Public transport is readily available, and efficiently run, and you can even go for great walks without too much trouble. The fact that the island is small only adds to that intimate feeling and makes it seem like a much more homely location.

One of the safest islands

When you’re booking a vacation in the Caribbean, you have to think about potential dangers while you’re there. Plenty of hurricanes and tsunamis have hit tropical islands in the past few years, with all of them causing untold devastation and destruction. The good news about Aruba is that it is out of the hurricane zone, making it one of the safest island in the Caribbean, and keeping you shielded from the elements. The last thing you want to be doing on your vacation is worrying about hurricane survival plans!

It’s got that perfect balance

Now, we know that some people like the hustle and bustle of a tourist resort, full of lots of different people from all over the world. And we know that others prefer quieter and more serene vacations, where they get to spend more time relaxing. The great thing about Aruba is the fact that it allows you to enjoy either – Palm Beach for the busy resort, and Eagle Beach for those who want a quieter experience. No matter what your passion or interest is, you’re bound to find something in Aruba to satisfy you.

Super friendly

Some people worry when they travel abroad that the locals may not be friendly, or it might be dangerous for them to be out and about. However, Aruba is the exact opposite of this and is home to some of the friendliest and most accommodating locals in the Caribbean. The atmosphere is friendly and kind, and the locals speak a variety of languages, including English and Dutch – and the island was even nicknamed One Happy Island.

From looking at these points it’s easy to see why Aruba is so popular, and what has made it one of the most stunning and popular Caribbean destinations. If you’re looking for a wonderful tropical getaway, this island can offer you so much more than many of the other islands in the Caribbean are able to, and that’s what makes it so appealing.

British passports are about to change forever

And it’s all because of Brexit…

british passport

The British passport is redesigned every five years, and with a Brexit in the pipeline, our documents will be changing significantly to move away from the current EU design.

The Home Office announced today that following the UK’s departure from Europe, British passports issued after October 2019 will be reverting back to their original navy blue and gold design, replacing the current burgundy version, first introduced in 1988.

And it’s not just the covers that are changing, the new passports will feature updated security features to protect against fraud and forgery that will supposedly make them some of the most secure travel documents in the world.

‘I’m delighted today to be able to announce the new British passport, that will come into being in late 2019’ announced Immigration Minister Brandon Lewis. ‘We’re returning to that classic, iconic, British blue passport – dark blue with gold embossing.’

He continued: ‘I know for many people they are a valued travel companion of the past and people have fond memories, but the new one will also be the most technologically advanced and one of the most secure passports in the world, with new security measures in it, making sure that we keep our country safe.’

Do I need to renew my passport because of Brexit?

Although the new blue design will be introduced from October 2019 when the new passport contract begins, the phasing out period will last a while and British passport holders don’t need to do anything ahead of their current renewal date, when their passports will be changed to the new navy design.

Everything you wanted to know about Tunisia

Tunisia is one of the true gems of Africa – a country so often overlooked on the continent. From stunning, sandy, sun-kissed beaches, to ancient and powerful ruins, this is a country oozing with history and amazing natural beauty. The rolling dunes of the Sahara showcase some of the vast deserts in this great nation, but it also lies just on the edge of Europe as well – making it a nation of mixed cultures and customs.

You might not know a lot about Tunisia, and you might have never considered a visit, but we think all that should change. They say to fully appreciate and experience a country, you must first find out about it, and we can see the logic behind that statement. So, without wasting any more time, here is a list of some of the amazing things we guarantee you never knew about Tunisia.

It’s a democracy

You might not be aware of this, but Tunisia is actually a democracy! It is classed as a unitary semi-presidential representative democratic republic! Wow, try saying that five times fast, we dare you! In fact, by being so, Tunisia is actually the only Arab country in the world to be classed as a democracy. So, in a lot of ways, this makes it much more tourist friendly, and ties it better to Europe than most other Arab nations. Having said that, it is still a Muslim country, and you need to be prepared for that when you visit.

It’s a popular filming location

Now, there might be areas of Tunisia that seem strangely familiar to you. Like you’ve visited them before in a dream of some sort, and this is almost kind of true. What you’re recalling is the locations and settings you’ve seen in movies, because Tunisia is a popular filming location. Most notably, every Star Wars movie, with the exception of The Empire Strikes Back was filmed in Tunisia. That’s why, when you gaze around Tunisia, you get that feeling of being in a galaxy far, far away!

It was part of the Roman Empire

The Roman Empire was huge, at one point spanning multiple continents, with designs to take over half the known world. Under the stewardship of multiple rulers, namely Julius Caesar, the Romans were fearsome in battle and conquered multiple nations, including Tunisia. The ancient city of Carthage, which currently sits on the banks of Lake Tunis, was a major part of the Roman Empire’s expansion to Africa. The ruins of the city still sit intact today and are a popular tourist attraction for visitors.

Tunisia is one of the most compelling and visually stunning countries in the world. As the northernmost country in Africa, it’s a great way of getting a transitional introduction to African life and Arabic culture. If you have never been to the country before, we suggest you check it out, provided it’s safe to travel of course. Tunisia is a nation with so much history and links to the Romans as well as Islam. Discover this diamond in the rough before it becomes too popular with Western tourists!

Let’s Talk Tofurky: 10 Thoughts I Had About My New Holiday Tradition

Like any good husband, I’d do just about anything for my wife.

That includes indulging in a holiday tradition that would make some folks queasy.

Yes, let’s talk Tofurky.

Every year, before Thanksgiving and Christmas, we forgo a turkey and head to the nearest health food store to pick up one of those golden round orbs of vegan goodness.

But “golden round orbs of vegan goodness” is not exactly how I would have described it at first. In fact, most people would probably have the same reaction I had upon hearing the request to pick up a Tofurky:

One, are you serious? And two, I think we can skip the grocery store this week, because I’ve lost my dang appetite.

I mean, look at that thing. You’re telling me it’s even remotely comparable to a turkey, the legs of which I consider one of my main food groups (along with bacon).

Listen, those are just two thoughts of a closed-minded food zealot too afraid to step out of his comfort zone. When I did, it was an eye-opening experience.

Here Are 10 Thoughts I Had During My First Tofurky Experience

1. “Where do they keep the Tofurky here? Yes, dude, I actually want a Tofurky. I didn’t know judgment was in a stocker’s job description.”

This year in particular, it was difficult to find a Tofurky. According to some posts on the company’s Facebook, they had some production issues.

After calling more than a dozen local grocery stores, I finally found one in a Whole Foods Market. But even though it’s a health food store, I swear that clerk was eyeballing me as I checked out.

(You should also be able to find one at Trader Joe’s.)

2. “This might be the first time I’ve purchased a roast in a box. Now I know how my grandparents felt during the war.”

Since the world is a complete dumpster fire right now, I know one main food staple that will last forever in my bunker.

3. “This thing is round. Like, very round. It looks like the lump of clay before it becomes a pot, but after someone spins it for a while.”

The hardest thing to get over is how a Tofurky looks. I just used my imagination to pretend an 18-pound golden turkey had appeared in front of me.

If you don’t have a good imagination, pretend you’re in the future and this is what food looks like now.

4. “It smells wet. No, not like wet dog. And not necessarily bad. There’s just something… wet about it.”

I honestly don’t know how to expand on this thought any further. You’ll just have to witness it for yourself.

5. “Why does it have to cook in the oven for so long if it’s not real meat? Can’t I just throw it in the microwave?”

You only have to cook a Tofurky for about an hour, which is a lot better than the five-plus hours it can take for a real turkey.

I actually tried to microwave a Tofurky one year, and let’s just say the oven ended up looking like a Jackson Pollock painting.

6. “OH MY GOD WHAT HAVE I DONE?!”

You know, they say it’s what’s on the inside that counts. As for Tofurky, I’m not sure that applies.

When you slice into your first Tofurky, you might be surprised by the, uh, innards that pour out. Don’t’ worry, you didn’t kill the Tofurky, it’s just “stuffing.”

7. “This actually tastes pretty dang good. Pass the gravy and that dirty Grateful Dead poncho, because I think I’m going vegan.”

Seriously, you’ll be totally surprised at how delicious Tofurky actually is. Every bite is a mind-blowing contrast — scooping up a blob of colorless tofu and getting a mouthful of tasty turkey.

It’s not turkey, but it’s definitely turkey-sh. Which leads us to…

8. “How many family members can I trick into thinking it’s turkey if I don’t say anything?”

There’s nothing more satisfying than tricking family members who self-identify as carnivores into eating tofu. Plus it’s way healthier so, you know, you’re just being a good nephew.

9. “We can’t possibly eat this another night in a row, please just let me eat a pile of dust instead. Come on, I’ll grab the vacuum cleaner.”

Since it’s just my wife and I enjoying the Tofurky, we usually have a ton of leftovers. And as good as the initial orb is, there comes a breaking point after the third iteration of leftovers where I would rather eat a ball of wax than another slice of the stuff.

10. “When are they going to make a seitanurky? That’s the really good fake meat.”

Hail, seitan. Right?

Alex Mahadevan is a data journalist at The Penny Hoarder. He takes his Tofurky wrapped in bacon and smothered in sausage gravy. Don’t judge.

Where Are the 2018 Winter Olympics? What to Know About PyeongChang, South Korea

While sports enthusiasts all around the world are gearing up for the 2018 Winter Olympics, officials in PyeongChang, South Korea—where the next Olympics is located—are putting the finishing touches on the venues that will host the XXIII Games.

Although this is the second time the Olympics have been held in South Korea — the 1988 Summer Games took place in Seoul — it’s the country’s first Winter Games and PyeongChang’s first international sporting event of this caliber. South Korea previously made unsuccessful bids on both the 2010 and 2014 Winter Olympics.

The 2018 Winter Olympics will consist of 102 events in 15 different sports over the course of 18 days. These events will take place at 13 venues spread across the counties of PyeongChang and Jeongseon, as well as the coastal city of Gangneung. The Opening and Closing ceremonies and most snow sports will be located in PyeongChang, with the Alpine Speed events in Jeongseon and ice sports in Gangneung. The Alpensia Resort in PyeongChang’s township of Daegwallyeong-myeon will be the Games’ central hub.

“With PyeongChang’s strategic position in Asia, and its access to a young and fast growing youth market, the 2018 Olympic Winter Games will no doubt expose new generations of potential athletes to the power of winter sport,” reads the official Olympics website.

Pronounced “pyuhng-chahng,” Pyeongchang is located in the Gangwon province of South Korea in the Taebaek Mountains. It sits just over 100 miles east from South Korea’s capital, Seoul, and around 50 miles from the border of North Korea. The closest international airport to Pyeongchang is in the nearby town of Yangyang. However, the Incheon International Airport in Seoul will function as the main airport for Olympic visitors. See the location of Pyeongchang on the map below.

The weather in Pyeongchang in February will likely be cold, with temperatures ranging from an average high of 33-35 degrees Fahrenheit (1-2 degrees Celsius) to an average low of 17 degrees Fahrenheit (-8 degrees Celsius), according to World Weather & Climate Information.

The first competitive events of the 2018 Winter Olympics will take place in PyeongChang on Thursday, Feb. 8, with the Opening Ceremony set for Friday, Feb. 9. The Games will conclude on Sunday, Feb. 25.

USA Gymnastics Paid McKayla Maroney to Keep Quiet About Alleged Sexual Abuse, Lawsuit Alleges

USA Gymnastics paid McKayla Maroney, a member of the Fierce Five that won Olympic gold at the 2012 Olympics, to keep quiet about sexual abuse she allegedly suffered by team doctor Larry Nassar, which began when she was 13 years old, a new lawsuit claims.

Maroney signed a confidentially agreement in October 2016, attorney John Manly said Wednesday. It came months after an investigation by the Indianapolis Star reported that USA Gymnastics, the sport’s governing body, had allegedly failed to act appropriately in reporting sexual abuse complaints to police.

Maroney was not coerced into the signing the agreement, but “this kid had no choice. She couldn’t function, she couldn’t work,” Manly said, according to ESPN. “They [USA Gymnastics] were willing to sacrifice the health and well-being of one of the most famous gymnasts in the world because they didn’t want the world to know they were protecting a pedophile doctor.”

In a statement USA Gymnastics said that the “concept of confidentiality was initiated by McKayla’s attorney, not USA Gymnastics.” At the time, Maroney was represented by California attorney Gloria Allred. USA Gymnastics said that Allred approached the organization requesting a confidential mediation, which resulted in a “settlement agreement that included a mutual non-disclosure clause and a mutual non-disparagement clause.”

Under terms of the confidentiality agreement, Maroney was not allowed to publicly speak about her sexual abuse complaints, Manly said. In return, she received payment, and would be fined if she violated the agreement. About a year after signing, she decided to break the agreement, when she took to Twitter to accuse Nassar of abusing her.

USA Gymnastics responded to Maroney’s Twitter revelation with a supportive statement at the time: “USA Gymnastics admires the courage of those, like McKayla Maroney, who have come forward to share their personal experiences with sexual abuse.”

Read more: Report: USA Gymnastics Failed to Alert Authorities About Sexual-Abuse Allegations

Manly said confidentiality agreements involving children who have been sexually abused are against the law in California. The lawsuit alleges USA Gymnastics violated the law in drawing up the agreement. USA Gymnastics disagrees, noting in the statement that “The settlement in 2016 was in accordance with state law, despite what has been alleged.”

Read more: Who Is Larry Nassar, the Former USA Gymnastics Doctor Aly Raisman Accuses of Sexual Abuse?

The lawsuit alleges that Nassar began sexually abusing Maroney when she was 13 years old, while she attended a training camp at the national training facility — the Karolyi ranch outside of Houston, Texas. The suit also alleges that Nassar took photos of her while he was abusing her. An attorney for Nassar also did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Nassar pleaded guilty to federal charges of child pornography in early December and was sentenced to 60 years in prison. At his sentencing hearing, Maroney and her mother, Erin, both submitted victim impact statements.

“Larry Nassar deserves to spend the rest of his life in prison. Not only because of what he did to me, my teammates and so many other little girls – He needs to be behind bars so he will never prey upon another child. I urge you to impose the maximum sentence upon him,” Maroney wrote.

Maroney’s teammates from 2012, Gabby Douglas and Aly Raisman, have also alleged that they were sexually abused by Nassar.

He still faces dozens of sexual assault charges in Michigan from gymnasts and student athletes at Michigan State University (MSU), where he served on the faculty before being fired in September 2016. He left USA Gymnastics shortly before that.

USA Gymnastics is also named in many of those suits. In December, USA Gymnastics sought to dismiss a suit filed in Grand Rapids, Mich. involving 141 victims who sued Nassar, MSU, and the gymnastics organization. USA Gymnastics (USAG) argued that the statute of limitations had expired in most cases, and that they were not responsible for Nassar’s behavior if the assaults occurred in his home, at MSU or elsewhere.

In November, Nassar pleaded guilty to the state sexual assault charges; sentencing is scheduled for Jan 16.

What to Know About Every Single Winter Olympic Sport in 2018

From a 17-year-old snowboarding star to a gold-medal-hungry women’s ice hockey team, Team USA’s athletes competing in the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, are looking to make a mark.

The official roster for Team USA will not be finalized until weeks before the 2018 Winter Olympics start Feb. 9, but the first competitors in the 15 Winter Olympic sports have already been chosen — and they each bring a unique story to the games. Maame Biney is a 17-year-old who already made history as the first black woman to qualify for Team USA’s short track speedskating team. Making his return in 2018, Gus Kenworthy is a freestyle skiing star who could become the first openly gay male athlete to compete at a Winter Games. And Chloe Kim is a 17-year-old snowboarding phenom who is the favorite to win gold in the sport for Team USA.

As for how the American athletes will fare against stiff competition in Pyeongchang, viewers will have to wait and see. But here’s what to watch for as Team USA competes in each Winter Olympic sport in 2018:

Alpine Skiing

Reigning Olympic gold medalist and overall world champion Mikaela Shiffrin is poised for another triumphant alpine skiing run during the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. When she was just 18, Shiffrin became the youngest athlete ever to win an Olympic gold in the Winter Olympic sport of slalom — an event that involves skiing downhill between poles and gates — a gold medal she’s trying to earn yet again at age 22.

Shiffrin has the second-most World Cup victories of any U.S. female skier — just behind Lindsey Vonn, who is aiming to make a return to the Olympic podium in 2018. Injuries have plagued Vonn in recent years, but the veteran skier earned her first World Cup win of the season in December — just months away from Pyeongchang.

Biathlon

Three-time Olympian Lowell Bailey is trying to secure Team USA’s first-ever Olympic biathlon medal in Pyeongchang.

That will be a leap for the athlete, who earned Team USA’s highest ever finish in the Winter Olympic sport with eighth place in the men’s 20-kilometer during the Sochi Olympics in 2014. But in 2017, Bailey won the U.S.’s first world championship gold medal. And in Pyeongchang, Bailey hopes to once again make history.

He was the first U.S. athlete to officially qualify for the upcoming 2018 Winter Olympics.

On the women’s side of the Winter Olympic sport, Susan Dunklee is one to watch. The 2014 Olympian earned a silver medal in the mass start at the world championships in 2017 in Austria.

Bobsleigh

Tom Pennington—Getty Images.Bobsledder Elana Meyers Taylor poses for a portrait during the Team USA Media Summit ahead of the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games on September 25, 2017 in Park City, Utah. Tom Pennington—Getty Images.

Elana Meyers Taylor is hoping to lead the bobsleigh women’s team in 2018 by besting her silver from Sochi. Meyers Taylor was the first American woman to ever win a bobsled world championship in 2015.

The two-time Olympic medalist has also advanced gender equality in the sport. She has competed in the 4-man event with three male brakemen, a first for the Winter Olympic sport that had required women to race only two-person sleds.

The men’s side lost Olympic great Steven Holcomb, who died in 2017. The multiple-Olympic medalist made history in the Winter Olympic sport in 2010 when he won the U.S. its first gold in the 4-man bobsled event since 1948.

Cross-Country Skiing

The women’s cross-country skiing team has made significant strides in recent years, with its best athletes scoring medals and making the podium in international competitions.

World champion Jessie Diggins is leading the Winter Olympics team into Pyeongchang after landing fifth in this season’s world cup standings, according to Team USA’s website. Teammate Kikkan Randall won a world championship medal in the sprint just after giving birth to her first child, and Sadie Bjornsen began her world cup season with a second-place finish in November in Finland.

While the U.S. trails behind European nations in cross-country skiing, Americans have improved in recent international competitions. In February 2017, Diggins and Randall made history when they earned silver and bronze medals in the world championship sprints.

Curling

Team USA is hoping to return to the podium after a more-than-decade-long curling drought. Four-time Olympian John Shuster will be the skip for the Winter Olympics team once again; he was on the 2006 team that won Team USA’s historic bronze medal. His 2006 teammate Joe Polo will also compete in Pyeongchang.

The U.S. has an extra chance to earn a curling medal this year, with the addition of the new mixed doubles curling event. In December, siblings Becca and Matt Hamilton secured their spot to represent the U.S. in the new event. They bested Shuster and Cory Christensen for the spot, as well as Polo and Tabitha Peterson, who had won bronze at the 2016 World Mixed Doubles Championship.

Figure Skating

A rising figure skating star, Nathan Chen was the first U.S. man in eight years to win the ISU Grand Prix Final in Nagoya, Japan — the last big-ticket international competition before the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. He beat Japan’s Shoma Uno by less than 1 point.

As the 2017 Four Continents champion and U.S. champion, Chen also beat reigning Olympic champion Yuzuru Hanyu in competition earlier this year (Hanyu is now struggling with an ankle injury).

Chen has excited Team USA fans who are hoping for a men’s singles medal this year.

Other figure skaters to watch: Siblings Maia and Alex Shibutani. They are 2017 world bronze medalists and two-time U.S. champions in ice dance hoping to follow Meryl Davis and Charlie White’s historic gold in Sochi in 2014.

Freestyle Skiing

The halfpipe and slopestyle skiing events, a sport new to the Winter Olympics in 2014, will have a number of Team USA athletes to watch — particularly Gus Kenworthy, who earned silver in 2014’s slopestyle. Kenworthy has landed on the podium for the halfpipe in international competition as well, including a halfpipe win during his 2015-16 season at the U.S. Grand Prix.

Kenworthy’s life off the slopes has also broken new ground. He came out in 2015, and could become the first openly gay male athlete to compete in a Winter Olympic Games.

Also at the Pyeonchang games, Olympic champions Maddie Bowman and Joss Christensen are both hoping to defend their titles from 2014.

Ice Hockey

The U.S. women’s national ice hockey team is gearing up for another intense match against rival Canada. And with professional men’s players out of the picture this year because the NHL barred players from competing in the Winter Olympic sport, the women’s team is the center of attention.

Team USA won silver in Sochi in 2014 after a 3-2 overtime loss to Canada. But the U.S. is looking to make a comeback against its northern neighbor this time around. Recent international matches have gone back and forth between the U.S. and Canada, with the U.S. posting a 5-2 win against Canada on Oct. 22, and a 1-5 loss just three days later on Oct. 25.

Brianna Decker, currently Team USA’s top scorer, recently told NBC Sports that success in Pyeonchang means “a gold medal.” As for Team USA’s rivalry with Canada, Decker says, “Though some of us may be friends off the ice, we are not friends on the ice.”

Long Track Speed Skating

Dean Mouhtaropoulos—Getty Images.Brittany Bowe of the USA competes in the Women 500m on day 1 of the Speed Skating ISU World Cup on December 9, 2016 in Heerenveen, Netherlands. Dean Mouhtaropoulos—Getty Images.

Members of Team USA’s men’s and women’s long track speed skating teams aim to get on the podium in 2018. Brittany Bowe is making a comeback in the Winter Olympic sport after suffering a concussion that kept her off the ice for months. She holds the world record in the women’s 1,000 meter and earned bronze in competition this year — a title that boosted her confidence following her injury, she told NBC Olympics in October.

This Winter Olympic sport has long been a U.S. stronghold in the Winter Games, with returning athletes including four-time Olympic medalist Shani Davis, Olympic bronze medalist Mitch Whitmmore and 2016-17 Grand World Cup champion Heather Bergsma. But skaters failed to win any medals in 2014 amid controversies over new uniforms and questionable training decisions.

Luge

Maddie Meyer—Getty Images.Erin Hamlin of the United States completes her first run in the Women’s competition of the Viessmann FIL Luge World Cup at Lake Placid Olympic Center on December 16, 2017 in Lake Placid, New York.Maddie Meyer—Getty Images.

Luge athletes for Team USA have high goals going into the 2018 Winter Olympics — and standout Erin Hamlin may lead them there.

The three-time Olympian won the U.S. its first medal ever for singles luge with her 2014 bronze, and she hopes to stand a little higher on the podium in 2018. Hamlin is a two-time world champion, including winning the title in the 2017 spring race at the world championships.

“I do think the U.S. can win gold,” Hamlin recently said. “In what, I’m not sure, but in something though.”

The 10-person luge team also includes Tucker West, who at age 18 was the youngest luger to qualify for the Olympics in 2014.

Nordic Combined

USOC Media Summit
Doug Pensinger—Getty Images.Nordic combined athletes Bryan Fletcher and Taylor Fletcher pose for a portrait during the USOC Media Summit ahead of the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics on September 29, 2013 in Park City, Utah. Doug Pensinger—Getty Images.

Bryan and Taylor Fletcher of Steamboat Springs, Colo., are two dominant figures in the Winter Olympic sport for Team USA. The brothers are both former Olympians and were on the U.S.’s 2013 world championship team, which won the bronze medal.

Bryan, the elder brother, brought in four top-15 finishes in international competition a year ago, according Team USA. The nordic combined athlete overcame cancer as a child — a difficult time during which he found happiness in ski jumping.

Taylor competed in the 2010 and 2014 Winter Olympics and, among the events within nordic combined, is best at cross-country skiing.

Team USA faces a difficult challenge this year, however. New scoring guidelines for this Winter Olympic sport now stress the jumping portion of the event — which is not Team USA’s strong suit.

Short Track Speed Skating

World record holder and Olympics medalist J.R. Celski will lead the U.S. men’s team for short track speed skating in Pyeongchang. The team includes John-Henry Krueger, who has medaled in international competition. Aaron Tran, a 16-year-old, also qualified to compete for Team USA, securing his spot after placing second behind Krueger in the men’s 500m at the Olympic Team Trials in December.

On the women’s side, 17-year-old Maame Biney already made history in December as the first black woman to qualify for the short track speed skating U.S. Olympic Team. She won bronze in the women’s 500m at the 2016-17 Short Track Junior World Championship.

Skeleton

Matthew Antoine slides back into Olympic competition after earning bronze in Sochi in 2014 and completing several years of successful international appearances. The Wisconsin-based athlete is looking to get another medal in the Winter Olympic sport this time around. He may be joined by contenders John Daly, who took a break from the sport after Sochi, and Nathan Crumpton, who is hoping to make his first Olympic appearance.

With a successful 2015-16 season, Annie O’Shea became the fastest of the women’s team and is poised to be one to watch in Pyeongchang. Olympian Katie Uhlaender is also trying to best her fourth-place finish in Sochi.

Ski Jumping

Though she has been plagued with injuries in recent years, 2013 world champion Sarah Hendrickson is the only member of the 2014 U.S. Olympic Team in ski jumping returning in 2018. She placed 21st in Sochi after she tore her MCL and ACL just months beforehand.

But, if she’s healthy, Team USA anticipates that Hendrickson could be a medal contender in Pyeongchang. In a blog post on Team USA’s website, Hendrickson said her training over the summer went well. “There are strengths you gain after fighting so many challenges – the positivity of just being me and the appreciation of having the opportunity to going to an Olympics feel like enough,” she wrote.

Women’s Olympic ski jumping only just debuted in Sochi in 2014.

Snowboard

Olympic medalists including Shaun White have dominated this Winter Olympics sport for Team USA in the past, but one young standout is expected to leave a mark this year.

Chloe Kim, 17, easily secured her spot on Team USA in December. The California-based snowboarder was the first woman to land back-to-back 1080s in a competition last year and sits at the top of world rankings for the sport. She’s a favorite to win gold in the halfpipe event in Pyeongchang.

Earlier this year, TIME named Kim one of the 30 Most Influential Teens in 2017.

“It’ll be a good experience to go through such a crazy event with my family,” Kim told TIME. “But at the same time, I’m very worried, ’cause it’s the freaking Olympics. I want to do really good. I’ve got to nail it.”

Former TV Doctor Donald Faison Talks About Saving Real Lives

Studies from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show that more than 100,000 people in the U.S. would live longer lives if they received preventive care each year. To encourage more people to take advantage of annual checkups, which are usually 100% covered by health plans if a patient stays in-network, Cigna launched The TV Doctors for Doctors. The yearly campaign features prominent actors who have played physicians on television such as Neil Patrick Harris, who’s known for his role as Dr. Doogie Howser, and Patrick Dempsey and Kate Walsh, who both starred on Grey’s Anatomy. Also part of the campaign is Donald Faison, who had a leading role in the hit ABC comedy series Scrubs from 2001 to 2010.

Faison stopped by Black Enterprise to discuss his personal passion to make a real difference in the health of the country and commitment to help people prevent chronic diseases and live a healthier life. During the interview, the former star of the 1995 pop classic Clueless talked about his partnership with Cigna and why it’s important to take control of your own health. He also explained why it’s important for him to be a role model for his children and motivate them to lead healthy lives. After taking an honest look at his own health and daily habits, he realized how important it was for him to lead by example. In addition, the comedian talked about his current work-related projects.

EMPLOYMENT SEARCH UPDATE:

How the #MeToo Movement Is About to Change Pro Sports

It took awhile, but the reckoning over sexual harassment and assault has finally reached the business of pro sports.

Jerry Richardson, the owner of the NFL’s Carolina Panthers, said on Sunday that he would sell the team following damning allegations about his behavior. In a searing report, Sports Illustrated found that at least four former Panthers employees have received “significant” monetary settlements due to inappropriate comments and conduct by Richardson, who is one of the most influential owners in the league. The news came days after a court filing from Jami Cantor, a former wardrobe stylist at the NFL network, that accused executives and analysts at the network, many of whom are former NFL stars, of lewd and disturbing conduct.

Is this the beginning of a long-overdue shake-up in the male-dominated boardrooms and back offices of pro sports? “They’re coming,” says Michael Kimmel, founder of the Center for The Study of Men and Masculinities at Stony Brook University, who predicts that a wave of accusations against sports figures will emerge. “One big difference in 2017 is that women are being believed. Women are not on trial. Their credibility is not the issue. Men’s behavior is the issue. That is the biggest change right now.”

Read More: Person of the Year: The Silence Breakers

If Kimmel’s right, the nation’s sports leagues would be a fat target. Men dominate the top leagues, in both locker rooms and front officers. No woman has ever been hired as a general manager or head coach in the NFL, NBA, Major League Baseball or NHL. “The more men relative to female employees, the more harassment there tends to be,” says Louise Fitzgerald, emeritus professor of gender and women’s studies at the University of Illinois and an expert on sexual harassment. “Sports is one of the most masculinized industries in the country.”

Julie Foudy played on the US women’s national soccer team from 1987-2004, and has worked at ESPN for more than a decade. She’s says she’s never been harassed, but she has heard disturbing stories from other women in the industry and she expects more women to come forward. “This is a very male dominated platform,” says Foudy. “You have these power dynamics that come into play on a daily basis.”

In her four decades as a pioneering sportswriter and sportscaster, Lesley Visser says she’s never been sexually harassed by the male bosses who helped her succeed. The players she covered, however, were a different story. They’d proposition her in the locker rooms and on the sidelines. She says she tried to deflect the incidents with humor. After a game in Green Bay a few years back, a player asked her what she was doing after the game. She told him her age—56 at the time. “He was mortified,” says Visser, author of the forthcoming book, Sometimes You Have to Cross When It Says Don’t Walk: A Memoir of Breaking Barriers. “He ran away across the field faster than Usain Bolt.”

Improper sexual conduct has persisted in sports for years. There have been countless cases of athletes accused and convicted of sexual assault, as well as horrendous examples of coaches, doctors and others sexually abusing athletes in their care. But the athletes and executives behind the teams have been relatively protected. One reason is that many employ agents, publicists and lawyers who work to suppress allegations of misbehavior.

“There’s a wall of protection thrown up around players, “says Kimmel. “When bad things happen, all kinds of people are covering for them. But these walls will soon come down.”

Foudy is hopeful that the broader movement will improve the culture in all industries, hers included. “There’s finally a feeling among women that it’s OK to talk about it,” she says. “Watching the movement, the bravery of women coming forward, it emboldens others. The whole point is that the new generations shouldn’t have to deal with this.”

Did Tiffany Haddish Lie About Domestic Violence In Her Book?

This has been the year of Tiffany Haddish. From Girls Trip to her book The Last Black Unicorn, the comedian is everybody’s fav. In the book, which is memoir, Tiffany claims she was physically abused by her ex-husband William Stewart. In one section, Tiffany wrote, “He grabbed me by the collar, he was like, ‘It’s time to go to the room now,’ in front of everybody. Just snatched me by my shirt, and pulled me to the elevator and threw me in it…once we got to our hotel room, he was so quick. He snatched me by the neck and slammed me into the wall.” Tiffany also alleged that the abuse resulted in her ex-husband being arrested and she suffered a miscarriage. William Stewart is denying all of the claims of domestic abuse.

In a radio interview, Stewart said, “I married Tiffany, her issues, and not the Hollywood lifestyle. I have never beat or hit or called a woman a ‘MF or B’ while having a disagreement, ever in my life. I never caused a miscarriage, I have documents to prove this.”

In an Instagram video over the weekend, Tiffany revealed, “I ain’t gonna lie. Some stuff in the book is a little bit… I was like, ‘What?’ I don’t know if when they edit, maybe they tweak things a little. So, then, in the audio-book, I’m like, ‘No, this is what it is.’” William commented on the video, writing, “I ont [sic] want to respond to my character and my family matters in the book. At this time I will not through [sic] dirt at Tiffany or release things that I know will harm her. I actually don’t think this was all Tiffany’s doings [sic]… I think people were telling her they need to add stuff to fluff it up. I have NEVER HIT or beat a woman in my life. I’m hurting and thanks.”

See the exchange below:

Accusations of domestic abuse is extremely serious. If William never hit her then it appears there was an extreme lie from her editors or Tiffany Haddish. As much as everyone loves Tiffany, if he never hit her or caused a miscarriage, she needs to make this right — beyond a video on Instagram.

5 Things We Love About ‘Far Cry 5’

This week Ubisoft hosted a gameplay event near their headquarters in San Francisco to show off progress on their newest Far Cry game; Far Cry 5. Due out in March of 2018, Far Cry 5’s locale is perhaps it’s least exotic yet, but the series’ most beautiful.

Taking place in the fictional Hope County in the non-fictional state of Montana, Far Cry 5’s story revolves around a fanatical religious cult, Eden’s Gate. Their doomsday rhetoric and violent tactics overrun the rural and remote Hope County community. With little contact with the outside world, it’s up to you as a sheriff’s deputy to restore Hope County’s lifestyle to before the existence of Eden’s Gate.

I had a couple of hours of single player and co-op to explore the expansive world. The developers gave us access to a huge portion of the map and I by no means had enough time to explore all of it. I tried my best to dip my toes in as many features of the game as possible in the two hours I had. Here are five things that I loved in Far Cry 5.

The World

The most obvious and perhaps least surprising aspect I was most impressed with was the gameplay environment. There is something intangible about the world in the newest Far Cry — it’s the franchise’s most authentic yet.

This could also very well be a biased opinion. While I’ve never visited Montana, I am an American and have visited similar settings in my life. However, the developers clearly spent a lot of time mapping portions of real-world Montana so it could be seamlessly integrated into the game.

While this statement might come off as ridiculous, I immediately felt like I was exploring a real place while playing Far Cry 5.

No Towers

New regions are unlocked through conversations and people. Not random towers.

The developers explained that there are still some “towers” to unlock regions — but most exploration opportunities and knowledge is gained through socializing with NPCs. If you’ve never played a Far Cry game, towers were essentially checkpoints in the open world that acted like prerequisites for exploring a new region. It became a tedious and repetitive feature.

It’s a great change to further immerse the player in the game’s setting. Like previous iterations of Far Cry, being the protagonist entails speaking and acting on behalf of the community. Having a deeper connection with the game’s story and it’s characters is essential in a series like Far Cry. This subtle change has shown fans that they’re being heard and given the franchise a much needed respite from a tired feature.

Animals are Wild

I actually had quite a few jump scares during my short time with the game. “Damn nature u scary” is probably the best way to summarize my encounters with wildlife in Far Cry 5. Bears are fast, always pissed, and surprisingly stealthy. It also doesn’t help the fact that Eden’s Gate has been drugging some of the local wildlife and making them extra angry.

During my co-op playthrough, my partner and I had to explore an underground sewage system that bridged a pond with a larger lake. As we entered, a very upset badger was there to greet my buddy and sadly had to be put down. It was a bittersweet moment that resulted in us trespassing on a badger’s home and having a good laugh about it.

Even visiting some farms proved to be an eventful experience. A dog trying to corral a wayward bull caught my attention. I tried to intervene and help out — but I got the horns and was gored. Interaction with wildlife in Far Cry 5 seems to be a lot more unforgiving than I previously remember, and I love it!

You can pet dogs, too. There are a lot of doggos to pet.

Fully Co-op

Hunt, sabotage, loot, and die together in Far Cry’s first complete co-op mode.

Expanding on the Far Cry 4 feature of allowing friends to team up on certain campaign missions, Far Cry 5 boasts the ability for friends to play the entire campaign together.

It’s a pretty neat feature that can offer BFF’s the ability to experience a robust open world game together. I often find myself talking to my good friends on Steam about what game we should play together. Not everyone is fit for the competitive gaming landscape and sometimes you just wanna have a fun, intimate gaming experience with your mates.

From my brief time with the co-op in Far Cry 5, I liked what I experienced. It was simple, intuitive, and just plain fun to explore, loot, and shoot up Hope County together.

Weapons Galore

Far Cry 5 has the most robust weapon customization to date. Tricking out your assault rifles, shotguns, and other pieces of your arsenal will cost you, but it’s so worth it. The best part is that it didn’t take that much time to gather the appropriate funds to start making your weapons unique.

Besides upgrading your guns, the customizable loadout returns with more options. The prospect of crafting the perfect loadout with my favorite weapons and their attachments is salivating.

Fans of the franchise should expect the newest Far Cry to possess all the necessary components to make this the best Far Cry ever. However, if you were looking forward to the series making some serious changes, you may be disappointed. It still possess many features from its predecessors, such as outposts, guns for hire, and endless amounts of missions.

You can expect to be playing Far Cry 5 on March 27 of 2018.

Amazon prime movies about traveling

The best movies are the ones that make us long for other lives and embrace the journeys of characters we’ve only just met. When you sit down to watch a movie, you are getting ready to have an experience, and this is something that depends largely on the type of movie you watch. There are so many different genres of film, and they appeal to us for a variety of different reasons.

Movies about traveling always give us a sense of excitement, and a spirit of adventure. They take us to faraway places and other worlds and show us the beauty of travel. Some are about the main character traveling and going through a journey of self-discovery, while others are about a quest to achieve or accomplish something. Amazon Prime brings more and more of these movies direct to our living rooms – and here are some of the best movies on there about traveling.

Into the Wild (2007)

Based on a true story, Into the Wild is an epic adventure movie helmed by Sean Penn. It follows the adventures of Christopher McCandless, a spoilt rich kid who changes his name to Alexander Supertramp, sheds all his worldly possessions, and heads for the wilds of Alaska, living off nothing but the land. The movie shows some of the amazing scenery that can be found in the United States. It documents Alex’s journey through the US and his perils with living off the land and being at one with nature. The movie is wonderfully filmed and has an incredible soundtrack – well worth a watch.

Up in the Air (2009)

This movie follows George Clooney who plays a corporate downsizer, and his experiences with work, as well as the lonely isolation of his constant travels. The movie co-stars Anna Kendrick, and Danny McBride. The movie was released to critical acclaim and received 6 Academy Award nominations. The movie eloquently captures the mundanity, but also the freedom that can be found with a life of travel. This is definitely a movie you should check out, but, it’s also going to make you want to get on a plane and go traveling.

Interstellar (2014)

It’s a movie about travel, but not as you know it. Chris Nolan’s magnum opus revolves around space travel, specifically time and space, as astronauts travel through a wormhole to try to find a new planet for mankind. If you’ve not seen Interstellar, you need to get it on your watch list. But, make sure you can give it your full attention because the movie is pretty complex in places. That being said, it’s one of the most intelligent and visually stimulating movies you’ll see.

Road Trip (2000)

At the more comedic side of the spectrum, we have Road Trip, a college road movie directed by Todd Phillips (The Hangover). The movie follows Josh and his roommates as they take a trip to his girlfriend’s college after he accidentally mails her a VHS of him with another girl. Yes it’s crass, and a little crude, but it’s also a lot of fun, and the characters all wind up finding out a thing or two about themselves in the process.

These are a few of the best flicks on Amazon Prime that you can watch about traveling. They all contain some stunning visuals, with an important moral message. Traveling is always fun, and a great way of seeing the world, or your home country. And, when you watch movies about travel you get to experience that adventure alongside other people as well.

This exhibition exposes the truth about Irish abortion laws

This weekend, the London-Irish Abortion Rights Campaign is bringing the award-winning NOT AT HOME exhibition to London

Abortion laws

The immersive NOT AT HOME installation recounts the stories of the thousands of women who are forced to leave Ireland every year to access safe abortion services, due to Ireland’s strict abortion laws, and allows guests to follow in their footsteps. Having previously taken place in Dublin, the exhibition is being brought to London by the London-Irish Abortion Rights Campaign.

Co-founders of the London-Irish Abortion Rights Campaign, Cara Sanquest and Hannah Little were honoured at the Marie Claire UK 2017 Future Shapers awards and heralded as women’s rights warriors. Their tireless work and efforts helped force the UK government to pledge NHS funding for abortions for Northern Irish women this summer.

abortion laws

Abortion is illegal in almost all circumstances in both the Republic of Ireland and in Northern Ireland. It carries a lengthy prison sentence for anyone who procures or assists in a termination.

Created by Emma Fraser and Grace Dyas, the exhibition was a response to hundreds of anonymous testimonies from women recounting their journeys of travel through their website, Not At Home Ireland

The London-Irish Abortion Rights Campaign (ARC) is a grassroots organisation working for the introduction of free, safe and legal abortion across the island of Ireland

Maeve O’Reilly of the ARC said: “We’re grateful to the creators of NOT AT HOME for bringing their installation to a new audience in London. Few here are aware of the huge numbers who travel to Britain every year to access safe abortion services as a result of Ireland’s abortion laws. There are no exceptions for rape, threat to health, or for those carrying a foetus that will not survive outside the womb. NOT AT HOME will provide guests with an insight into the lived experience of Irish women who make these journeys every day.”

Marie Claire is proud to support the ARC and continues to stand strong against attacks on our rights. We believe that every woman deserves affordable, accessible reproductive care. Join us in speaking out to say #HANDSOFFOURIGHTS

NOT AT HOME opens at 4pm on Saturday 16th December at Platform in Southwark and runs until Sunday 17th December. The event is free of charge and no tickets are required.

Exploited and Endangered: Female Factory Workers in Vietnam Open Up About Their Work Conditions

45 women in Vietnam divulged the harsh and inhumane factory conditions they face at Samsung plants in a landmark report conducted by IPEN, a Sweden-based organization dedicated to the elimination of environmental toxins, and the Hanoi-based Research Centre for Gender, Family and Environment in Development (CGFED).

Lunch time at Samsung Vietnam. (SOURCE)

Factory workers spend, on average, 8 to 12 hours a day on their feet, and often rotate between night and day shifts—resulting in persistent joint pain and fatigue. According to women’s testimonies, employees frequently succumb to nose bleeds, dizziness and stomach aches. The women surveyed also reported an alarming prevalence of miscarriages amongst factory employees, and suspect overtaxing may be the culprit—pregnant employees often refuse breaks for fear of remunerative wage deductions.

Samsung has been subjected to increased scrutiny in recent years for suspected dangerous working conditions in its assembly plants. An advocacy group has compiled over 200 counts of terminal illness in former Samsung plant employees—the most common being leukemia, lupus, lymphoma and multiple sclerosis—and a 2016 investigation led by the Associated Press found that South Korean authorities had facilitated the withholding of information about chemical exposure at Samsung chip and display factories, effectively preventing employees from seeking recourse for occupational illness.

Just last month, the South Korean Supreme Court overturned a ruling denying the family of Lee Yoon-Jung, who worked at a Samsung plant for six years and succumbed to a fatally aggressive brain tumor at the age of 32, compensation for occupational disease. Lim Ja-woon, the lawyer representing the Lee family, cited 27 other instances of brain tumors in former Samsung Electronics employees in his litigation, indicating excessive exposure to harmful chemicals as the catalyst for tumor growth. Many other former factory workers and families have filed similar lawsuits demanding occupational disease and bereavement compensations.

Politicians and legislators largely disregard the rights of workers in the electrical industries, and employees are discouraged from discussing working conditions on the pretense of “protecting trade secrets.” According to Joe DiGangi, Ph.D., IPEN’s Senior Science and Technology advisor, “the lives and rights of workers in the electronics industry have been neglected in research and policy.” Women face the consequences of this neglect most profoundly;  80 percent of Samsung’s 100,000 factory employees are women.

In a 2009 UN convention, over 100 international administrations reached an agreement definitively classifying hazardous chemicals in electronics as a global emerging policy issue. The agreement, defined as the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management, set a precedent as the first true directive to combat occupational disease in electronic factories, commissioning a team of experts to outline specific measures for addressing the safe handling of hazardous materials in in all facets of production.

According to Pham Thi Minh Hang, a representative of CGFED, the IPEN report denotes a need for “comprehensive regulations […] that ensure worker safety in the electronics industry, including regulations relating to chemicals, electromagnetic fields, radioactivity, shift work and other relevant potential harms. Exposure limit values should be protective of the most vulnerable populations, which include women of child-bearing age, and should provide equal protection in the workplace and the community.” Hang and her fellow contributors are calling for a demonstrable change to factory protocol—including the disclosure of industrial chemical use in plants, and the adoption of more thorough safety guidelines.

Despite Samsung’s fervent dismissal of the claims in the report, Vietnam’s Ministry of Labor and the International Labor Organization in Hanoi are responding to the claims of the women in the survey, launching an investigation into working conditions at both of the electronic giant’s plants.

For DiGangi, the investigation is long overdue. “Companies make a lot of money in Vietnam,” he said, “but their profit rests on the tired shoulders of the female-majority workforce.”

We need to talk about guns before my child stays in your home

by

Becky Vieira

posted in Parenting

“Happy Holidays! Thank you for opening your home to my family. Before we can take you up on your generous offer to stay with you — for free — I first have a few questions. I need to know if you have guns in the house. And if so, are they unloaded and locked up?”

That’s just a snippet from the awkward conversation I’ve been preparing in my head. An awkward yet incredibly important conversation. One that concerns the safety of my child.

So why does it feel so weird and pushy?

I have to be honest, it wasn’t even a conversation I’d thought about. Yet I ensure my son’s food is cut into small pieces to prevent choking. I hold his hand when we walk near cars. And I slather him in sunscreen before we go outside.

Mom and child sit with Santa as she contemplates asking holiday hosts about guns in the home

Why then, did I not think to ask about guns in the home of our holiday hosts?

It started over breakfast. My husband and I were talking about fishing, or maybe he was talking. I was somewhat listening. He said his friend Ken goes camping and fishing, sometimes by himself. And in the middle of nowhere.

I commented how it sounded dangerous. My husband told me that he brings a small handgun along for safety.

“Wait, what?” I screeched in horror, suddenly paying the utmost attention to his words. And looking up from my phone for the first time. “Ken, as in your friend Ken who we’re staying with in two weeks? He has a gun?”

“Yes,” my husband replied. Suddenly the dots connected and the planets aligned. His face registered recognition, then his eyes grew wide with concern. “Yes!”

We have a very curious 14-month-old son. He listens as well as most toddlers his age, take that as you will. My husband and I are very much on top of him, especially when we are in someone else’s home. We don’t expect others to parent for us, or babyproof their home when we come over.

Except for guns. Guns are different.

Even with all eyes on him, my son is quick. He’s thrown things in the toilet. We’ve been missing a remote control for a week. These aren’t real issues for us. My husband got a new toothbrush after his swam in the toilet. We can buy a new remote.

A gun encounter is a real issue. A really huge issue.

Given the severity, why does it feel so awkward to have the conversation? Perhaps because I’m asking someone questions about how they live. Putting demands on what goes on inside their own home. Delivering an ultimatum to a person kind enough to invite me and my family to stay.

It’s a no-brainer for me and my husband. We have questions that will need to be answered before we can stay. And let me make this perfectly clear: This is not a gun issue. This is a safety issue. I’m not saying Ken should or shouldn’t be allowed to own a gun. I just want it far away from my child.

Given my propensity to make a verbal leap from quiet conversation to audible hurricane in under 5 seconds, my husband and I agreed he’d be the one to speak with Ken. When I think of my child’s safety possibly being jeopardized, my mama bear claws come out. My husband will handle it calmly yet effectively.

Family sits with Santa Claus

And we’ll stay with Ken. Or in a hotel. But we’ll be doing so with all the information needed to make that decision.

Which brings me back to my self-loathing for not asking in the first place. We’ve only ever stayed in my parents’ house and I know they don’t own guns. It was never in my realm of consciousness.

I can’t go back, but as I move forward things will be different. We can’t expect friends and family to offer us an itemized list of the items in the home. We’ll ask. We must ask for our son’s sake.

It might offend some people, no matter how gently we try to phrase our queries. There could be awkwardness. But my son’s safety matters most.

Coco Rocha told her friends about pregnancy on social media

OHMYGOSSIP — Coco Rocha revealed her pregnancy to her friends for the first time on social media.
The 29-year-old model announced she was expecting her second child with her artist husband James Conran on Instagram last week to the delight of her fans and she has now revealed she even told some of her nearest and dearest the same way.
She told the New York Post’s Page Six column: “It is easier announcing my pregnancy on social media instead of calling people – but on the other hand some friends and family members want to make sure you call them and get that respect of being called first. There are haters out there, so you either shut them down or remove them from out of your life.”
Coco announced her pregnancy by posting a video on Instagram of herself standing in a nursery wearing a full-length, fitted, black evening dress and holding her stomach and standing next to her daughter Ioni Conran.
Two-year-old Ioni then jumps out from behind her and shouts: “Surprise! There’s a baby in mummy’s tummy!”
Coco captioned the video: “Your attention please! @ioniconran has a very important announcement to make!! #babyconran2. (sic)”
Coco had recently admitted she is a lot more selective about the modelling jobs she takes on now she is a mother.
She said: “Now that I’m a mom, when it comes to campaigns and editorials, I look at the bigger story. I ask if that’s a good fit for the Coco brand, should I work with every editorial that comes my way, every brand. It’s about pinpointing what’s good … I didn’t want to be consumed by my career. Now we have a baby girl and that’s what grounds me. I travel as much as I can with my family. My hair and make-up team are people that I absolutely love, who make me laugh. We’re not curing cancer. We’re going to do our jobs, doing it well, and realise we can have fun.”

Facebook is banning women for saying mean things about men

Saying ‘men are scum’ is apparently a lot worse than ‘women are scum’

facebook

Women are being suspended from Facebook for ‘hate speech’ for posting ‘men are scum’ or ‘men continue to be the worst’ on the social network.

One of the women recently banned is New York standup comic Marcia Belsky, who was blocked for 30 days for writing ‘men are scum’ in a comment under a post by her friend Nicole Silverberg.

Somewhat ironically, Silverberg had been detailing the abusive messages she received from men after writing a list on Twitter about the ways women could be treated better.

Since the #MeToo movement, a number of women have been banned for responding to female friends’ stories of sexual assault and harassment with derogatory posts about men. This is despite Facebook CEO Sheryl Sandberg’s recent post in solidarity with victims of sexual harassment.

According to the Daily Beast, comedian Kayla Avery received a month-long ban for writing ‘men continue to be the worst’ after being aggressively trolled online. ‘There was one guy who was threatening to find my house and beat me up. I got banned before I could even successfully report it’ she told the site.

In protest, 500 female comedians set up a group where they pledged to post ‘men are scum’ on their own pages, but many of these women then found they too had been blocked.

The reaction from Facebook is being viewed as suspiciously heavy handed, particularly regular criticism levelled at the site for its anaemic response to hate speech and trolling. As Marcia Belsky – one of the original comics to be banned – pointed out, ‘women are scum’ or the use of the n-word didn’t appear to have violated the platform’s standards.

One reason for the site’s approach could be down to a set of leaked internal documents detailing the algorithms it uses to tackle what it deems to be hate speech.

The documents show white men were categorised as a protected group on Facebook, but ‘female drivers’ and ‘black children’ were subsets and therefore not protected.

This doesn’t explain why ‘women are scum’ appeared to go unmoderated. And though Facebook later said the ban on Marcia Belsky was a mistake, Kayla Avery said Facebook moderators had combed through her old posts to delete negative posts about men.

‘What. A. Mystery!’ she wrote on Twitter.

Things that you didn’t know about Vatican City

Vatican City might be the holiest place on the entire planet. If you have ever been to Rome, you’ll understand the high regard in which the Vatican is held, and how much it means to the citizens of Rome. For Catholics around the world, this is their spiritual home and a place of great religious significance. It’s also the home of the Pope and the beating heart of the Catholic church.

Anyone who has ever been here, and seen the Sistine Chapel will understand just how incredible this place is. There are a lot of different things you probably already know about Vatican City, but, we reckon there are quite a few you don’t know as well. So, let’s look at some of the things you probably didn’t know about the Vatican City.

It’s the world’s smallest country

You might not know it, but the Vatican is actually classed as its own country – making it the smallest country in the world. It might sit within the city of Rome, but it has its own laws and governance and is classed as an independent city-state. The Vatican has a 2-mile border, covering a little over 100 acres, which makes this country one-eighth the size of Central Park! And it’s not just a token title either – the Vatican issues its own passports, mints its own Euros, has its own media outlets, and a separate flag. The whole shebang!
