Gabby Douglas Apologizes for Saying Women Should Dress ‘Modestly’ in Response to Post About Sexual Assault

Gymnast Gabby Douglas has apologized for saying women are responsible for dressing “modestly” in response to her Olympic teammate Aly Raisman‘s social media post about sexual assault.

Raisman on Friday wrote that men don’t have the right the “shame or not believe” women who come forward about sexual abuse just because they might have participated in a “sexy photoshoot” or wore a “sexy outfit” previously.

“Women are allowed to feel sexy and comfortable in their own skin, in fact I encourage you all to wear what you feel good in,” Raisman wrote. “I will not put up with any woman or girl being shamed for wanting to wear a skirt, dress, etc. I do not tolerate it.”

Following Raisman’s statement on victim shaming, Douglas weighed in with the opinion that “it is our responsibility as women to dress modestly and be classy.”

“Dressing in a provocative/sexual way entices the wrong crowd,” she wrote in a since-deleted tweet, prompting immediate reaction and criticism.

Teammate Simone Biles tweeted: “Shocks me that i’m seeing this but it doesn’t surprise me… honestly seeing this brings me to tears bc as your teammate I expected more from you & to support her.”

After deleting her initial tweet, Douglas apologized, saying, “I didn’t correctly word my reply.”

“I am deeply sorry for coming off like i don’t stand alongside my teammates,” Douglas tweeted. “Regardless of what you wear, abuse under any circumstance is never acceptable.”

Raisman’s post comes after she became the latest in a string of high-profile gymnasts to accuse former USA Gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar of sexual abuse.

Nassar is currently awaiting sentencing in Michigan after pleading guilty to child pornography charges. He has pleaded not guilty to charges of sexually abusing his former patients and a family friend.

A lawyer for Nassar told TIME earlier this month that a gag order in his pending case prevented him from commenting on Raisman’s allegations.

Everything You Need to Know About the Republican Tax Plan

Recently, the House Republicans passed their tax plan, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA).  The proposed tax bill is expected to be one of the most significant tax overhauls since 1986.

Republicans promise the plan will provide tax savings for the typical family, simplify taxes for millions of Americans, and reduce tax burdens for corporations.

But how does it stack up for small business owners?

(Image: iStock/AndreyPopov)

Corporations Greatly Favored

For small businesses formed as corporations, the Republican tax plan will provide a huge tax benefit. The tax plan seeks to slash the corporate tax rate from 35% to 20% but also eliminates certain deductions for corporations.

The plan includes a temporary allowance that would allow corporations to immediately expense capital expenditures, a benefit that can help businesses seeking to grow and expand their business operations.

While many corporations welcome the tax cuts, the Tax Policy Center argues the tax bill will cause a 1.5 trillion deficit over the next 10 years and would add to the national debt during this time.

Little-to-no Benefit for Pass-Through Entities

Most small businesses are “pass-through” entities, defined as partnerships, S-corporations, and sole proprietorships. These types of entities are very different from corporations in that they are not taxed “per se,” but the profits pass through the business owners’ tax returns.

As such, the business owner’s tax bracket will determine the amount of taxes he or she is required to pay. Therefore, owners could face taxes in the highest tax bracket on profits generated from their small businesses.

As such, the tax plan seeks to provide “some” tax relief for owners of pass-through entities by capping tax rates to 25%. While this may be advantageous, many may argue that this does not do enough for small business owners.

According to the Center on Budget and Policies Priorities (CBPP), more than 70% of small business owners organized as “pass-through” entities are taxed at rates 15% or lower. Therefore small businesses will see little to no benefit.

Chance of the Bill Passing

Keep in mind; this tax bill is not finalized. It is highly likely it will go through significant changes before it is approved and makes it to the president’s desk.

Many tax analysts and economists argue the plan may be a far reach from becoming the law of the land. Groups such as the National Federation of Independent Business oppose the tax plan saying it does not do enough to help small business owners since the “pass-through” provision leaves many small businesses behind.

For now, this will be a waiting game. The Senate has recently unveiled its version of its tax plan. While this bill is similar to the House bill, there are slight differences. Notably, the Senate bill proposes to delay corporate tax reductions until 2019. Also, a recent amendment filed by Orrin Hatch, chairman of the Senate Finance Committee aims to increase retirement “catch up” contributions from $ 6,000 to $ 9,000. However, the amount contributed will no longer be pretax.

Small business owners should continue to monitor its progress to determine its final impact on their bottom line.

Hold Everything: Oversized Bags Are About to Be HUGE (Again)

Susie Bubble carries a trending oversized bag

Gives new meaning to the term “carryall”; Image: Edward Berthelot/Getty Images

Chiropractors of the world, rejoice. Oversized bags are once again in. Though the micro-bag trend is nowhere near over (see: the rise of fanny packs), several key fashion personalities — Raf Simons, Marc Jacobs, Karl Lagerfeld, Demna Gvasalia, Alessandro Michele, Phoebe Philo — have aligned themselves with the schlepper cause. (What can we say? Fashion tends to operate in extremes.)

This past September, hobos, totes, bucket bags and shoppers of epic proportions made their way down the Spring 2018 runways of Céline, Calvin Klein and Chanel, to name just a few. (Given the commercial success of Balenciaga’s super-size, super expensive shopper bags, we were hardly surprised.)

Large enough to hold a full day’s (and night’s, and perhaps even a week’s, if you’re used to carrying a mini-bag) worth of essentials, this new crop of cool, capacious carryalls is all about utility. Need a change of shoes? Subway reading options? Gigantic headphones? All the moisturizing products (because winter)? As a wise man once said, “Just throw it in the bag.”

The trend towards bigger-is-better bags speaks to designers’ awareness of their costumers: modern, on-the-go women who, while freewheeling and decisive enough to pack their life into a mini bag, may prefer to travel not so light, for time or comfort’s sake. In keeping with said theme, pair yours with a bold-hued suit or glamleisure getup.

Two addenda:

1. Street style stars suggest you not fill your bag to the brim. Rather, keep it light and dangle it nonchalantly by your side. Big bags are fashion, bag lady vibes are not.

2. Rather than shell out a small fortune on a luxe tote, splurge on another big-ticket item and ask the sales clerk to bag it up in their largest logo-ed shopper or tote (which, in all likelihood, comes free with purchase). Two birds, one stone.

See the oversized bags coming in Spring 2018 and shop early takes on the trend in the slideshow below.

Things you did not know about the Eiffel tower

As the most iconic symbol of France, the Eiffel Tower is one of the top tourist attractions, and the highlight of Paris, City of Love. The Iron Lady has reached her 128th year this year and is one of the finest sights in all of France. If you’ve never been to this majestic construct, the time to go is now – she’s pretty stunning! In fact, over 300 million people have gazed upon this epic structure and been inspired.

There are so many wonderful facts about the Eiffel Tower and plenty of things we already know about it. But, there are also a lot of things we don’t know about her, and some of them are much more epic and interesting than we would ever have considered. Tall, chic, and rich in history, the Eiffel Tower is the perfect Parisian landmark, and here are some of the most awesome things you never knew about The Iron Lady.

She wasn’t built to last

The Eiffel Tower, incredibly, was only actually designed to last for 20 years! Constructed by Gustave Eiffel to commemorate the French Revolution, it was meant to showcase the industrial might of France as a nation. Now, the plan was that it would be pulled down after twenty years – point proven and all that! Gustave Eiffel convinced the Government to leave it up, and, for a time it doubled as a telegraph transmitter. This could even have been the decisive factor that saved it from being torn down.

You can ice skate on there

The viewing platform of the Eiffel Tower actually doubles up as an ice rink in the winter, and you can buy tickets to go skate up there. This is the perfect choice for those who are looking for something romantic to do while in the City of Love. This is an amazing experience, and one you may not get again, so we suggest you make the most of it as much as you possibly can. Situated on the first floor of the tower, the ice rink is open from December through February, and has an amazing 50-plus foot bar where you can get mulled wine and all sorts!

Repaint job

A structure as large, and old as the Eiffel Tower, can’t look this majestic simply by being left to its own devices. It needs constant attention and no small amount of TLC. The tower herself has actually been repainted 18 times over the years, which, considering her age, is not actually as much as we were expecting. But this could have something to do with the fact that it requires 60 tons of paint, just to give it its first coat! Yikes! This is clearly not a job that can be done in a single afternoon!

It’s been replicated

It might surprise you to know that the Eiffel Tower has actually been replicated numerous times. In fact, at last count, there were over 40 different replicas of the tower all over the world. These include one in Las Vegas and one in Tokyo. Paris, Texas also has one, and it wears a stetson, in typical Texas style! It’s amazing that there have been so many replicas of this wonderful structure, but that goes to show the impact and importance of the tower throughout the world.

The Eiffel Tower is one of the most recognizable constructs in the world, and it’s got a lot going for it. Not only is it incredibly beautiful and iconic, but it is also one of the most interesting and architecturally impressive feats in the modern world. Next time you visit Paris, you have to go see the Eiffel Tower, and, if you’re there in the winter, please be sure you go ice skating on the first floor.

All the reasons why sex is painful and what to do about it

What’s up down there?

painful sex

Painful sex is a bit of a passion killer, no? Not to mention a major cause for concern. It can be triggered by anything from emotional issues to a more serious infection or hidden health condition, so it’s better to deal with it sharpish rather than grit your teeth and hope it will go away.

Known medically as dyspareunia, painful sex affects one in ten British women, according to a study by BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. That’s a lot of women suffering in silence. We spoke to the experts to decode your painful sex triggers.

Lack of arousal

‘If you’re not physically aroused, touch of any kind can be uncomfortable – especially if it’s somewhere sensitive, like your clitoris or the tip of your penis,’ says a spokesperson from the Brook Advisory Clinic. ‘Being well lubricated, relaxed and with lots of blood flow in the area (so penises get erect and vulvas swell) helps with this so put plenty of focus on foreplay’. Women especially need warming up before penetrative sex, both physically and emotionally. ‘If you’re not feeling turned on (mentally aroused) touch can be unpleasant – for example, being tickled when you’re feeling playful and silly is usually more fun than when you’re tired or angry!’ adds the Brook spokesperson, who suggests spending time enjoying foreplay to significantly improve your sexual pleasure. ‘There may be times when penetrative sex is not possible, but you can still have great sex without intercourse.’

Lack of lubrication

‘Lack of arousal can result in less vaginal lubrication, but many women simply do not produce enough vaginal lubrication, including younger women,’ explains Samantha Evans, sexual health expert, former nurse and co founder of luxury sex toy retailer Jo Divine. ‘Vaginal dryness is often linked to menopausal women, but younger women can be affected too due to the contraceptive pill, monthly hormonal changes, stress and anxiety.’ The use of lubricants can really help. Often GPs will prescribe a hormonal cream or pessary and many gynaecologists advocate using vaginal lubricants to help nourish the delicate tissues of the vagina. Your pharmacist can recommend over-the-counter lubes.

Painful sex due to injury

‘Painful sex can be a sign of damage from previous sex, such as tearing or soreness,’ explains a spokesperson from the Brook Advisory Clinic. You wouldn’t go running if you had a busted ankle, so sex after a particularly enthusiastic session, may have resulted in friction that has left you sore. Also: when was your last bikini wax? An ingrowing hair may be difficult to spot but you will sure as hell know about it if it’s down-there when you’re trying to get down to business.

You could have an STI

Pain during or after sex can also be a sign of a sexually transmitted infection (STI) or urinary tract infection, such as cystitis.

‘Stinging or burning during sex may be as a result of a sexually transmitted infection, especially if you also experience an unusual vaginal discharge, or an unusual odour,’ says Professor Ellis Downes, consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist and spokesperson for vSculpt. ‘If you have a new sexual partner and have had unprotected sex with him, and are experiencing these symptoms it would be a good idea to have it diagnosed and treated by your GP or at a sexual health clinic.’

STIs such as Chlamydia or gonorrhoea can have little to no symptoms but vaginal itching or burning, as well as painful sex, might be a sign that you are infected. Visit your GP or GUM clinic for a test. Treatments usually involve antibiotics but your doctor can recommend the next course of action.

You might have thrush

Vaginal thrush is a common yeast infection and symptoms include painful sex, itching and soreness around the vagina, stinging or burning when peeing and an odourless discharge. Three out of four women will suffer with thrush at some point in their lives, and it is often confused with other infections, such as bacterial vaginosis. You can pick up a DIY test in most pharmacies to determine whether you have thrush or BV, and your pharmacist will be able to recommend the next course of action. It is usually treated with antifungal cream, pessaries, pills or a combination.

He may be too big

‘Even if a woman is well lubricated and fully aroused, she may experience pain if a man inserts his penis too quickly or deeply, or if he’s particularly well-endowed’, says sexual health expert Samantha Evans. ‘The vagina relaxes as a woman warms up to having sex and opens more comfortably if the penis enters slowly. Guiding your partner in at your own pace can really help avoid any pain.’

She adds: ‘Often, having sex doggy style can be painful, so try backing onto the penis at your own pace. The same can be said when going on top. Do not allow your partner to pull you down onto their penis, but slowly lower yourself, controlling the speed and depth of insertion that is comfortable.’

You could be allergic

Many women experience an itching or burning sensation when they try new products, from changing their washing powder to using a new shampoo/ shower gel. Some vaginal lubricants can trigger allergic reactions leading to painful sex too, so be aware of what you are applying to the delicate skin of your genitals. Glycerin – often found in flavoured lubes – as well as parabens and aspartame can cause irritation. Similarly, alkali or acidic lubes can mess with the pH balance of your vagina and cause dryness and itching. Instead, switch to a water-based lube rather than a silicon-based one, such as Pjur. Another alternative is Sliquid, which is also glycerin- and paraben-free.

Latex products, such as condoms or sex toys, can cause an allergic reaction too – as well as some spermicidal creams – so check out Durex and other mainstream brands for their range of a latex-free condoms. There’s also a booming market for organic sex toys that are free from irritant phthalates. Check out Ethical Sex Toys for a range of options.

‘When using a sex toy it is important to clean it carefully after use to counter the proliferation of bacteria on it,’ says obstetrician and gynaecologist Professor Ellis Downes. ‘However some cleaning substances can irritate the vaginal lining so it is best to use hot water and natural soap.’

Painful sex may mean you have vaginismus

This is a condition whereby the muscles in or around the vagina tighten, making sex painful or impossible. It can be caused by a combination of physical and psychological issues. Physical causes can include urinary tract infections, sexually transmitted diseases, vulvodynia (persistent, unexplained pain in the vulva), skin conditions such as psoriasis or eczema, menopause, and birth trauma.

Psychological problems can be caused by emotional or sexual trauma. ‘A previous painful experience with sex might make it harder to feel aroused and enjoy touch,’ explains a spokesperson from Brook Advisory. ‘It can also make the muscles around the vagina and anus clench (to protect you from the pain you’re worried about) and make penetration difficult and more painful.’

With the appropriate medical intervention and counselling, this problem can be alleviated to enable penetrative sex. Treatment usually involves specialist counselling, pelvic floor exercises, biofeedback training with a women’s health physiotherapist and use of medical dilators or a vibrator/dildo to slowly encourage the vagina to relax and open.

Your diet could be at fault

Dietary irritants can be to blame for painful sex. Foods containing high levels of oxalates can trigger urethral irritation in women who are sensitive to them. When too much oxalate is absorbed into the blood stream via the gut, it combines with calcium to form sharp calcium-oxalate crystals which embed themselves into the delicate tissues in the body, causing damage and pain. Women who have irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) absorb too much oxalate due to the poor condition of their bowel. Sticking to a low oxalate diet for 3-6 months has been found to improve symptoms. A list of high oxalate food can be found on the Vulval Pain Society website and includes celery, coffee, rhubarb, spinach and strawberries.

bulletproof diet

You may have endometriosis

Painful sex is a common symptom for women with endometriosis, which affects two million women in the UK, making many avoid sex altogether. Up to 50% of women with endometriosis have cited painful intercourse, ranging from sharp, stabbing, needle-like pain to a deep ache. It can feel mild to intense, either during sexual intercourse or up to 24-48 hours postcoitally, or both.

As well as endometriosis (when the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus or is thicker than normal), painful sex can also be caused by fibroids (growths of muscle and tissue inside the uterus) growing close to your vagina or cervix, irritable bowel syndrome and constipation.

As the symptoms of endometriosis are unpredicatable, there is no knowing when it may occur. Some women experience pain throughout the month whereas others only experience it at certain times of the month, probably related to their menstrual cycle.

There is no cure for endometriosis but there are treatments that can help with the pain – usually hormone therapy to lower your body’s oestrogen levels.

Painful sex when you’ve just given birth

It isn’t just chronic exhaustion that might mean you don’t fancy getting jiggy with your partner. There are a number of emotional and physical challenges after giving birth. ‘Childbirth is a formative experience for any woman, and for some it can be traumatic,’ says Dr Becky Spelman, psychologist and We-Vibe‘s relationship expert. ‘Insensitive care practitioners and/or a difficult or dangerous birth can give rise to a heightened fear of birth, pregnancy, and even sexuality itself. Women who have experienced a traumatic birth often struggle to re-engage with their sexual selves, even when they have recovered physically, and can experience pain with no obvious physical cause.

‘Sex can be painful after you have given birth for a number of reasons: bruising to the vaginal wall is a common reason,’ explains obstetrician and gynaecologist Professor Ellis Downes. ‘You may also have experienced a tear and this needs time to heal completely before you embark on sex again. If you have had a c-section you have had an operation and need time to allow the wound to heal completely. Doctors recommend at least six weeks but it is often longer. Once you do have sex again, start gently.’

Your relationship might be under strain

‘If a woman is experiencing emotional pain as a result of conflict within her relationship, that could also lead to painful sex,’ says Samantha Evans. ‘Many couples experience an emotional disconnect if one of them is unable to have sex, which in turn can increase the pain levels, thus creating a vicious circle. Consulting a couples’ counsellor or sex therapist may help.’

If you experience pain during or after sex, seek medical advice. You can still enjoy pleasurable sexual activity without intercourse by incorporating the use of lubricant, such as YES, and slim vibrators, such as the range at Jo Devine.

painful sex

You could have a hidden health condition

Often painful sex is a sign of a more unusual, difficult to diagnose health issue. Samantha Evans outlines some of the lesser known conditions that could be causing you discomfort during sex.

Lichen Sclerosus

Lichen Sclerosus is a common condition, generally affecting postmenopausal women. It is thought to be linked to an overactive immune system, however the cause is not completely known. It is not an STI and cannot be contracted during sex.

It generally affects the vulva and around the clitoris and symptoms include itchy white patches of skin that start forming together to create a larger patch, red blood blisters caused by thinning of the skin and, ultimately, painful sex.

The main treatment for Lichen Sclerosus, also known as LS, is a steroid or cortisone cream or ointment to control symptoms. Avoiding fragranced products and wearing loose fitting clothing can ease symptoms.

Vestibulodynia (provoked pain)

This condition is characterised by burning pain around the entrance of the vagina when touched and is thought to affect 12-15% of women of childbearing age. It often occurs through light touch such as inserting a tampon or sexual intercourse and generally has no other symptoms at other times.

Research by Reed found that women who have this condition are 2-3 times more likely to have more than one chronic pain condition, including IBS, fibromyalgia (musculoskeletal pain) and interstitial cystitis (bladder pain). Treatment for this condition includes pelvic floor exercises, biofeedback therapy, low oxalate diet, counselling and sometimes surgery to remove the glands at the entrance of the vagina.

Vulvodynia (unprovoked pain)

This is different to vestibulodynia in that it occurs spontaneously, the pain felt is often burning and sore in nature, there is no itching sensation and again it can be focused around the vulva or generalised.

The intensity of pain can vary from mild discomfort to a severe constant pain, making even sitting down uncomfortable. Usually continuous, the pain can affect sleep patterns and day to day activities. Often the pain isn’t localised to the vulval area but can be experienced in the anus when having a bowel movement and in the bladder when you pee. Unprovoked vulvodynia can impact upon sexual activity during foreplay and make penetration painful.

For a small minority of women, the cause can be related to back pain as a result of nerve compression or a slipped disc triggering referred pain to the vulval area. However, for the majority of women, the cause is idiopathic meaning there is no known reason for the condition.

Treatment can consist of taking tricyclic antidepressant tablets for a period of 3-6 months. Taken in tablet form, staring with a low dose, then increasing every few days until the pain decreases or subsides. Using natural lube, such as YES organic lubricants, during sex can help, as can applying aqueous cream to soothe the area.

If you are experiencing painful sex on a regular basis, always consult your doctor.

What you need to know about group traveling

Traveling can be a stressful experience at the best of times, but, traveling as a group can become even more arduous. There are a lot of different things to account for, and you need to try to accommodate everybody’s tastes. Group vacations have become really popular in the past few years, and this trend looks to continue for the time being. So, you may want to know some tips about traveling as part of a group.

If you’re heading abroad it’s highly likely you’re going to want to take a group tour. These are excellent because they are helmed by a guide, and, as such they are insightful, and an excellent way of getting a great dose of new culture. However, group tours can sometimes be restrictive on what they allow you to do, and that can be an issue… As long as you follow our handy tips, group traveling will be a breeze!

Get to know the group

The most important thing to do is to get to know the people in the group who are traveling with you. Some of them might be friends and family, but others may be total strangers, and it’s important to try to get friendly with them. This is going to make things a whole lot easier in the long run and will make the trip more enjoyable. Also, this is a unique experience and opportunity for the people on the trip, and it will no doubt bring you closer together as a group. You might even make friends from taking this approach, and everyone could do with a couple of extra pals!

Patience is a virtue

Bear in mind that group tours, while interesting, and occasionally fun, can also be trying and monotonous. There are going to be elements that get on your nerves, but you can’t, and shouldn’t, let them get to you. Try to exercise patience where you can, as that is the most important way of enjoying a big group experience like this. Don’t forget, you’re going to be generally waiting for the slowest or most inquisitive members of the group at every place you stop. Try to exercise some patience, otherwise, the group tour experience is liable to drive you insane.

Have an alternative plan

One of the most important things we think you can do on any kind of group trip is to come up with an alternative plan. Now, if you’re traveling with friends or family, you could get clever and elect to take a self-guided tour instead. This way you can still experience everything the tour guide is showing to others, but you’re not going to have to pay for it, and you won’t have to march to the beat of some else’s drum. This is a highly effective technique if you have people in your group, like kids, who you feel are going to be bored easily, and may want to have their own adventure instead.

Traveling as part of a group can be one of the most exciting and enjoyable ways of taking a trip, but, it is also potentially fraught with problems as well. You need to figure out the best way of making this a more enjoyable experience for you, and your family & friends (should they be traveling with you). You want to have a pleasant and memorable experience, and this is something you will need to try to work on as much as possible. Hopefully, you will find these ideas useful in helping you enjoy group travel much more.

Fashion Deals Update:

Aly Raisman Opens Up About Sexual Abuse by USA Gymnastics Doctor Larry Nassar

Aly Raisman says the knock came at eight o’clock at night. The future Olympic gold medalist was competing in Rotterdam, Netherlands in her first year at the coveted senior level, the group from which world and Olympic teams were selected. She was thousands of miles away from home, nervous about the competition to come, and without her usual support system of her parents and siblings. She opened the door and saw the team doctor for USA Gymnastics, Larry Nassar.

“I thought you could use a massage,” she says he told her. She was 16.

It wasn’t the first time she says Nassar had appeared at her door at night, offering a massage under the guise of therapy. And it wouldn’t be the last, as Raisman disclosed in an interview with TIME and in her new book, Fierce.

It first happened several months earlier, when she was competing in Melbourne, Australia. At that meet, an official with USA Gymnastics, the sport’s governing body, saw Raisman wincing through practice with sore heels and an aching back and suggested that she see Nassar. He was a great doctor, Raisman says the official told her, and she should consider herself lucky that he would work with her. So when Nassar appeared at her door again, Raisman opened it and let him and let him “work” on her, the term that USA Gymnastics and the gymnasts used for Nassar’s treatments.

Those treatments, it turns out, weren’t necessarily treatments at all. According to Raisman and other gymnasts who have described the procedures, Nassar’s so-called therapy seemed to consist primarily of invasive massage, touching the girls around their pelvic areas and vagina. Gymnasts were sent to Nassar for any pain — whether it was in the back, hip, or muscle — and he often suggested massage as the treatment, according to interviews with gymnasts. He rarely used gloves when working with the girls, and would touch them with his bare hands, including penetrating their vagina with his fingers.

Raisman is the latest high-profile gymnast to accuse Nassar of sexual abuse. In October McKayla Maroney, her teammate on the squad that won gold at the 2012 London Olympics, said Nassar abused her for years, beginning when she was 13 years old. In all, more than 100 athletes have filed suit against Nassar and USA Gymnastics, alleging that the organization was complicit in not addressing reports of sexual abuse adequately. The plaintiffs in the various lawsuits also include athletes at Michigan State University, where Nassar had been employed.

Nassar pleaded guilty to child pornography charges in July and is awaiting sentencing in Michigan. He pleaded not guilty to charges of sexually abusing former patients and a family friend.

Nassar resigned from USA Gymnastics in the summer of 2015. When contacted for this story, Nassar’s attorney said a gag order in his client’s pending case prevented him from commenting on Raisman’s claims.

Raisman, 23, opened up about her experiences in a recent interview with TIME at her family home in a quiet wooded neighborhood in Needham, Mass., outside of Boston. A rec room off the kitchen is filled with mementos from her record-setting career: with six medals won at the 2012 and 2016 Games, she’s America’s second-most decorated female Olympic gymnast. But as her mother, Lynn, lit a fire in the living room, Raisman settled into a deep brown leather couch and talked about how it could have all been derailed by abuse.

She says Nassar often closed his eyes and would be out of breath while working on her. Unaware that she was being molested, and still believing she was receiving medical treatment that would help her, she attributed his behavior to his being tired or jetlagged from the trips to competitions around the world.

Now Raisman says she knows better. “I know people will say ‘Why didn’t she tell her mom? Why didn’t she say anything?’ But those questions are unfair,” she says. “The fact is I didn’t really know it was happening to me. What people don’t get is that he was a doctor. I would never have imagined that a doctor would abuse me or manipulate me so badly.”

After years of making excuses for what she calls Nassar’s “weird” behavior during the treatment sessions, in July 2015 — three years after winning three medals at her first Olympics — she says she finally realized that Nassar had been sexually abusing her. Raisman says she received a call from USA Gymnastics president Steve Penny, who asked her to speak to an investigator who would be coming to Raisman’s home. He wouldn’t tell her what the visit was about.

She says the investigator, who was hired by USA Gymnastics to address complaints about Nassar, asked if Raisman felt safe, and if anyone had been making her feel uncomfortable. Then she asked specifically about Nassar, about what he did, how he treated her, how many times, and whether other people were present during the treatment sessions. At first Raisman continued to make excuses for Nassar, admitting that she often felt uncomfortable but also adding that he was a doctor, and didn’t mean to make her uncomfortable, and frequently brought her and the other girls gifts.

When the investigator left, Raisman thought back on her encounters with Nassar and realized that the treatments had not been medical in nature but that she had been sexually abused. She declined to go into detail about the nature of the abuse. When Raisman called USA Gymnastics back the following day and asked to speak to the investigator again, she says she was told that the investigation was ongoing. She also received a text from an official asking her to stop talking about her experiences with Nassar, so as not to jeopardize the investigation. Requests for comment to Penny’s attorney were not immediately answered.

Raisman says that the culture of success at all costs, and the power that USA Gymnastics wields over the gymnasts and their families vying for coveted Olympic spots, can allow sexual abuse to go unchecked as victims feel that it’s easier and potentially beneficial to stay quiet.

Raisman says she now feels betrayed, by both Nassar, whom she trusted as a doctor, and by USA Gymnastics, whom she trusted not to put her in harm’s way.

Nassar, who was a licensed osteopath, was a volunteer at USA Gymnastics. Throughout her career, Raisman was told by the organization’s officials that Nassar was a talented doctor, one that the gymnasts were fortunate to work with. She trusted that advice, as did her parents. “When I went to a parents meeting, they would tell us your children are so lucky to have the best doctor, they are so lucky to work with Dr. Larry,” says Lynn Faber Raisman.

Nassar went out of his way to exploit that trust, according to Raisman and others who worked with him. He attended many of the elite training camps at the secluded Texas ranch run by the influential coaches Bela and Martha Karolyi, who led the U.S. Olympic team. The camp was invitation only, and a call to attend was considered a top honor for Olympic hopefuls. Once a month during the season, elite teams would gather at the ranch with their coaches and national trainers — but no family — for five days of intensive drills. The gymnasts lived in spartan dorms and their days consisted of little more than training, eating and sleeping. Cell service is spotty, so athletes barely communicated with their families during camp.

In that setting, Raisman says Nassar became their confidante and cheering squad, bestowing gifts and sweets, and much-needed encouragement and support. For young girls whose entire lives consisted of hours and hours of performing to impress others, Nassar seemed like an ally.

“He was always, always, always on my side,” says Raisman. “He was always that person who would stick up for me and make me feel like he had my back. The more I think about it, the more I realize how twisted he was, how he manipulated me to make me think that he had my back when he didn’t.”

Raisman says she is still processing her experience, and admits to being anxious about seeing male doctors. She has not yet retired from gymnastics, and has not ruled out trying to make a third Olympic team in Tokyo 2020. She hopes that her story, and those of others who have come forward, will change the way USA Gymnastics addresses reports of sexual abuse.

In response to Raisman’s claims, USA Gymnastics said in a statement, “We are appalled by the conduct of which Larry Nassar is accused, and we are very sorry that any athlete has been harmed during her or his gymnastics career. In the past year, Aly has become an advocate for many issues, and sharing her personal experience of abuse takes great courage. We are committed to doing what is right, and we want to work with Aly and all interested athletes to keep athletes safe.” The organization has adopted a Safe Sport Policy meant to prevent similar instances of abuse, and Steve Penny resigned as president in March 2017. Kerry Perry, a former sports marketing executive, was appointed the new president and CEO beginning Dec. 1.

Those decisions are a start, says Raisman, but she wants to see other steps, including the creation of a separate body independent of USA Gymnastics that is responsible for handling reports of sexual abuse. “One day when I have a daughter I want to put her in gymnastics,” she says. “I want to make the sport fun, and make it safe. I love the sport, but winning doesn’t make the abuse OK.”

What you didn’t know about the Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is one of the most historically and culturally important constructs in the world. The 15th Century Inca citadel based in Peru is one of the most iconic structures in the world. And attracts millions of tourists every year. Archaeologists have determined that it was constructed for the Incan emperor of the time, and it’s considered perhaps the most enduring symbol of the Incan Empire.

It is believed to have been constructed sometime around 1450 and then abandoned by the Incas around 100 years later. The citadel is one of the most stunning constructs on the planet and was finally awarded UNESCO World Heritage status in 1983. Considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World, here are some amazing things you never knew about Machu Picchu.

The numbers don’t lie

We all know Machu Picchu is a wonderfully impressive construct, but you may not be aware of just how impressive it is! The temple is located almost 8,000 feet above sea level in the Cusco Region of Peru. The site also covers a jaw-dropping 80,000 acres and includes three primary structures – the Intihuatana, the Room of the Three Windows, and the Temple of the Sun. These all combine to make one of the most culturally significant constructs in the world. There are also loads of outlying buildings, and, in 1976 there was a restoration project to help restore and rebuild some parts of the citadel and the surrounding area.

It was never meant to be discovered

The history books tell us that the Incas abandoned Machu Picchu in the wake of the Spanish Conquest. The conquistadores were ruthless with their sacking and destruction of many of the Inca constructs. So, they decide to hide it from the Spanish, abandoning it, and burning the forest in the process. The idea was that the forest would regrow and hide the place, as well as disguising the trails that led into the mountains. This actually wound up working brilliantly, and the Spanish never discovered Machu Picchu. It remained hidden by the jungles of Peru until it was accidentally discovered by Hiram Bingham in 1911.

It has a dress code

Of course, back in the day, this wouldn’t even have been a thing, but, it might surprise you to learn that, these days, there is actually a dress code for entering and visiting Machu Picchu! No, honestly, we’ve not made that up! As you enter the site, there are rules on which it clearly states that visitors are not allowed to enter the ruins wearing another country’s national dress! Quite why you would visit these iconic ruins in any sort of national dress is a mystery, but it must have happened in order for the rule to be generated. Make sure you bear this in mind before you visit.

Discoveries are still happening there

For a place so full of magic and wonder, we have taken so much from Machu Picchu, and it’s not stopped there. Incredibly, there are still discoveries being made here of an archaeological nature. The Incas, it would appear, had many secrets, and we are still unearthing a lot of secrets even now. In 2014 a secret door was discovered that is believed to be the door to one of the royal burial chambers. However, the Peruvian government won’t sanction the opening of the door, as it could cause significant damage to the temple.

Machu Picchu is one of the most amazing constructs in the world, and a place of supreme cultural importance and significance. Many millions of people each year have visited the ruins of Machu Picchu for an important spiritual journey. There are so many amazing things about this construct, as well as so many things you definitely had no idea about. We hope these amazing facts will open your eyes to a new way of looking at Machu Picchu.

Things you never knew about the great wall of china

The Great Wall of China is undoubtedly one of the most profoundly incredible fortifications in the world. A defining symbol of Chinese culture and heritage, the wall has stood for centuries, though it is mostly in ruins now. Tourists can pay a visit to this iconic wall, and discover some of the beauty and magic of the Ming Dynasty while they’re at it.

If you’ve never visited the Great Wall of China, you need to make sure you rectify this by paying a visit as soon as you are able to. As one of the best known Modern Wonders of the World, the Great Wall of China is an emblem of epic reach and influence of the ancient Chinese Empire. It is the longest man-made structure in the world and played a big role in historical defense and trade for China. Here are some things we bet you definitely never knew about the Great Wall of China.

It’s staggeringly long

Many people don’t realize just how long the Great Wall of China actually is. They called it ‘Great’ for a reason! In fact, the complete wall itself runs for a total length of over 13,170 miles! To put things in perspective, that is half of the length of the equator! This makes it not only the longest man-made structure in history but also an incredible testament to human engineering. It’s unlikely we’ll ever see anything so vast built again. Of course, what remains of the wall today is not as long as this, but it still comes in at an impressive 5,500 miles in length. And tourists can actually walk the length of the wall, or, at least, part of it.

Badaling is the most popular part

We know the wall is incredibly popular, but, you may not know that it attracts more than ten million visitors every single year. And Badaling, the most famous section of the wall, has been visited by multiple VIPs, celebrities, and heads of state. More than 300 heads of state from around the world have walked on this hallowed ground. It is the busiest part of the wall and has been restored several times. If you don’t mind crowds then this is fine, but, if you’d rather visit somewhere off the beaten track, you may wish to avoid Badaling.

You can’t see it from space

There has long been a myth that the Wall is the only structure made by humans that can be seen from space by the naked eye. This is not strictly true. While it is visible from space, humans require aid to actually see it. It can be seen from the lower part of the Earth’s orbit, only when conditions are incredibly favorable. Nevertheless, this is still a monumentally impressive thing, and one of the only man-made structures visible from the Earth’s orbit.

Almost a million people could have been involved in the construction

The wall is such a staggering feat of human brilliance that it must have taken decades, even centuries to build. It is unclear exactly how many people were involved in the construction of the wall, though sources believe it to have been close to one million! To be more precise, some studies suggest the number of people involved could have come in at 800,000! This shows you the scale and magnitude of the work involved in its construction.

The Great Wall of China is one of the greatest feats of engineering and construction in the world. It is a structure that has to be seen and experienced to be fully comprehended. If you ever get the chance to go to China, you must make sure you visit the Great Wall and enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime experience. We hope you found these facts about the Great Wall fun and interesting!

Congratulations are definitely in order…

eddie redmayne second baby

Words by Jennifer Davis

It’s definitely the year for celebrity babies, with pregnancy announcements emerging left, right and centre.

This week it’s a big congratulations for Eddie Redmayne! He and his wife Hannah are expecting their second child together, according to E! News.

Rex

‘Eddie and Hannah Redmayne are delighted to confirm they are expecting their second child,’ the actor’s rep told the entertainment news outlet. The Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them star and his wife welcomed their first child, a baby girl named Iris May Redmayne, in June 2016.

No word yet on when baby number two is due, but we expect the family is overjoyed with the news, especially Redmayne, who gushed about being a father last year on Ellen. ‘Before you’re a parent, you sort of hear people talking about [not getting any sleep] and suddenly you’re the guy who’s like floating in a sort of constant jet lag with a constant IV of caffeine. So yes, I’ve become that person. It’s worth every minute,’ he said.

‘It’s that amazing thing when it’s three o’clock in the morning and you go in and you’re sort of gently furious and then you get a little smile and your heart breaks a bit, and it’s totally worth it.’

Congratulations to these two!

Get Well Wednesday: All About Your Smile

Dr. Carla Spann received her Doctorate of Dental Surgery at  Texas A&M University Baylor College of Dentistry  in Dallas, Texas.  She offers a compassionate and conservative approach to dentistry, believing patient education is paramount to success in both resolving and preventing oral health issues. She is particularly skilled in helping fearful patients relax during their dental care.

Q:    EXPLAIN WHAT AN ORTHODONTIST IS AND THEY TYPE OF WORK THEY DO?

A: Orthodontists receive two-to-three years of additional education at an accredited orthodontic residency program after graduating from dental school. Only those with this level of formal education are entitled to call themselves “orthodontists,” and only orthodontists are accepted for membership in the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO).

AAO members are gifted and highly educated specialists who diagnose, prevent and treat dental and facial irregularities to correctly align teeth and jaws. Whether you are considering clear aligners or traditional braces, orthodontists have the training, the experience and the treatment options to make sure you get your best smile. Many general dentists have additional training in orthodontics as well, and can handle some challenging orthodontic cases or will refer you to an orthodontist that they trust.

Q:    HOW DOES THIS ON-LINE MAIL-ORDER COMPANY WORK?

A: Patients can have a 3D image of made of their smile via an at-home impression kit or you can visit a SmileShop for a scan of their mouth. Next, they send you a preview of your new smile showing how your smile will transform and begin production of your invisible aligners, which are plastic trays made from the mould of your mouth which gradually guide your teeth into alignment. They also send teeth whitening solutions to be used with the aligners.

Q:    WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO GO THROUGH THE TEETH STRAIGHTENING PROCESS WITH AN ORTHODONTIST?

A:Dentists and orthodontists are specially trained to recognize when teeth straightening treatments are necessary. Without proper training, issues such as temporomandiblular joint disfunction (TMJ disorders) can arise. Sometimes jaw surgery or planned teeth extractions are necessary to achieve the optimal results. Only a dentist orthodontist can diagnose these issues.

Q:   WHAT ARE SOME OF THE ADVANTAGES OF THE ONLINE ORDER SERVICE?

A:Affordable, convenient, no visit to dentist necessary.

Q:    ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE UTILIZING IT? AND DO YOU PERSONALLY HAVE ANY PATIENTS WHO HAVE USED A COMPANY LIKE THIS?

A: I don’t think it has taken off yet, but I do think it is going to become a major player in the market place. I do have a patient that uses this service, but most do not have a relationship with a dentist.

Q:   IS THIS TYPE OF COMPANY DOING SOMETHING ILLEGAL BY SELLING INVISIBLE ALIGNERS?

A: It’s not illegal, but I do believe it is unethical, and puts patients health at risk because there is so much more involved in the selection of ortho treatment than simply a picture and mould of where the teeth are.

Q:   HEALTH WISE, WHY IS USING AT-HOME ORTHODONTICS COMPANY FOR BRACES OR INVISIBLE ALIGNERS DANGEROUS?

A: Oral cancer screening, periodontal disease diagnosis, and tooth decay are very important considerations in moving teeth and also in whitening.

Here’s what you need to need to know about the Russia investigation charges

Here’s what you need to need to know about the Russia investigation charges

Here’s what you need to need to know about the Russia investigation charges

The Russian investigation has been looming in the background of Donald Trump’s presidency. On Monday, special counsel Robert Mueller issued the first real charges in the investigation against Trump’s former campaign manager Paul Manafort and one of his advisors, Rick Gates. Even if you’ve only been low-key following along with the investigation, the excitement surrounding the announcement on Monday morning made it seem like a Very Big Deal™ and possibly the beginning of the end for Trump. That all remains to be seen, but for now there are a few things you should know about the Russian investigation charges.

Because if nothing else, these charges (along with another, unrelated confession made on Monday from another former campaign advisor, George Papadopoulos) mean that the Russian collusion investigation is not going away anytime soon.

Just in case this is the first time you’ve really been able to tune into the investigation, since there are tons of better, more worthwhile ways to spend your time than obsessing over Trump, let’s start from the beginning.

So WTF is going on?

This investigation has been going on since before the election, when James Comey was still the FBI director, and the entire point of it is to find out if the Trump administration colluded in any way with Russian officials or operatives during the 2016 election, potentially affecting the outcome. After Trump allegedly insinuated to Comey that he should just drop the investigation, the president fired him back in May. (Why Trump fired him was a point of contention, which is why Comey testified this summer about his interactions with the president.)

But the purpose of the investigation is important, since any alleged involvement from any foreign country in our elections is profoundly messed up, so the Justice Department hired Mueller as special counsel to carry on the bipartisan investigation back in May. According to the New York Times, U.S. intelligence agencies have evidence that Russian president Vladimir Putin led a “stealth campaign” to interfere with the election last year. Mueller is tasked with finding out whether Trump officials had anything to do with it.

They’ve been interviewing and investigating Trump’s people since then.

After interviewing people close to the Trump campaign for the past few months, the first charges were finally brought on Monday, but they seemingly, or least according to the White House, have very little to do with the Trump campaign’s alleged involvement with Russia.

Here’s Paul Manafort at the 2016 RNC.

CLEVELAND, OH - JULY 21: Republican nominee Donald Trump, Campaign Manager Paul Manafort, and his daughter Ivanka Trump do a walk thru at the Republican Convention, July 20, 2016 at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio. (Photo by Brooks Kraft/ Getty Images)
Brooks Kraft/ Getty Images)

The Justice Department had Manafort and Gates turn themselves into the FBI under 12 charges Monday morning, the biggest ones being for money laundering, lying to the FBI about their involvement with a political party in Ukraine, and filing false documents about their cash flow, which amounts to one of the other charges: conspiracy against the U.S.

All of the things they’re being charged with occurred way before 2016 — essentially the indictment alleges that Manafort laundered more than $ 18 million, which is why you might have seen tweets and reports about properties he bought in Brooklyn, huge clothing purchases, and other spending.

The scandal isn’t that he had real estate investments or custom suits, but that those things were all a way for him to clean dirty money from the Ukraine without having to tell the Internal Revenue Service about it.

Still, nothing to do with Trump…sort of.

Although what Manafort was allegedly doing with the Ukrainian government, money laundering, and treason thing sounds like a Scandal episode, it really shouldn’t distract you from what Mueller is really doing by filing the charges.

The charges against Manafort and Gates could lead to prison time theoretically, but it’s unlikely that that will ever happen. Instead, Mueller and his team are hoping that the two former Trump advisors turn on their former colleagues and start dishing about what really happened, if anything, if they even know, between the Trump campaign and Russia during the 2016 campaign.

On Monday afternoon, both Manafort and Gates plead not guilty to all of the charges and were placed on house arrest. So, there’s going to be a lot of legal back and forth going forward when it comes to finding out what, if anything, Manafort and Gates knew or did.

There’s a little plot twist, though.

While Manafort and Gates were turning themselves into the FBI on Monday morning, another one of Trump’s old foreign affairs advisors from his campaign, George Papadopoulos, also went to law enforcement. He confessed to lying to the FBI last spring when they asked him if he had ever had contact with Russian or other foreign officials on the Trump campaign’s behalf. He now says that he did communicate with Russians about getting “dirt” on Hillary Clinton during the campaign.

Those meetings allegedly never happened and those close to Trump allege that Papadopoulos wasn’t a key member of the campaign. White House spokesperson Sarah Huckabee Sanders said that Papadopoulos was a “volunteer,” at best, insinuating that Trump had no idea what he was up to. However, statements made by Trump last year concerning his advisors indicate that he was in the inner circle in some regard.

The investigation is nowhere near over. If anything, Papadopoulos’ confession could be much more damning for the Trump campaign, since he’s admitting he lied previously to the FBI and his actions reportedly took place during the 2016 campaign. That’s the case you want to really watch if you have to pick just one, if you, like all of us, are totally exhausted already by all of this. It’s really just the beginning for Mueller’s team, so settle in.

Is Your Kindergartner Learning About Stocks?

Today I spoke with John Rogers, founder and CEO of Chicago-based Ariel Investments, a B.E. 100s company. Rogers is also known for founding Ariel Community Academy, a public school—not a charter—on the South Side of Chicago that teaches neighborhood youngsters about the intricacies of investing.

(Image: iStock/eli_asenova)

The 20-plus-year-old K-8 school has reportedly produced graduates that have gone on to become doctors, lawyers, entrepreneurs, and financial services professionals—not bad for an urban, predominantly black school that doesn’t use any selectivity criteria to screen its students.

But maybe introducing stocks to kindergartners and equity investing to fourth graders has something to do with the alumni’s remarkable successes.

Rogers spoke to me about his goals for partnering with Chicago Public Schools to open Ariel Community Academy.

“First, we wanted our students to be really comfortable with the stock market,” Rogers told me, explaining that now that traditional pension plans have all but disappeared, putting most Americans “in charge of navigating their own financial ship,” as Rogers says, it’s critical for young people to start out with a sound financial footing.

“We wanted the students to grow up to be good investors, to prepare themselves for retirement, for college tuition, and for a first house.”

Second, Rogers wants Ariel students to start thinking about careers in financial services. Because the students work with professional analysts, “they learn about career paths that they might have never been otherwise exposed to.” Two graduates work full time at Ariel Investments.

(John W. Rogers. Image: File)

A third goal of the school is to produce better, more effective entrepreneurs. “We need to have strong minority-owned companies,” Rogers says. He told me about one grad who has an online business teaching financial concepts.

Rogers’s fourth goal isn’t for the students, but for other successful businesses: “We want to be a role model for other financial services companies, to show how they can partner with urban public schools,” he says.

President Obama had appointed Rogers to chair the President’s Advisory Council on Financial Capability, which in the second term the council changed to Financial Capability for Young Americans.

“It presented a cool opportunity to convene the power of the White House and the Treasury and the Department of Education to pull together a great board, speakers, and national leaders in financial services,” Rogers says.

A key recommendation that came out of it: to see more financial services and local businesses partnering with urban public schools to teach kids about investing, entrepreneurship, and the lucrative financial services sphere.

Exactly what Ariel Investments is already doing.

Bachelor in Paradise’s Dean Unglert Opens Up About Ex Kristina Schulman: ‘We’re Working on Things’

Millions of viewers saw Dean Unglert break Kristina Schulman’s heart on this summer’s Bachelor in Paradise — but the former couple may be giving it another shot.

“We’re working on things to see if there is a future there,” Unglert, 26, tells PEOPLE. “It’s a matter of rebuilding trust and seeing if there is a mutual attraction, physically and emotionally.”

Unglert and Schulman began seriously dating on Paradise, but he became distracted once Danielle Lombard arrived on the beach. A love triangle ensued; ultimately no one ended up finding lasting love.

Now, Unglert, who hosts a podcast, I Suck At Dating, on the iHeartRadio app, says he’s learning more about himself every day — and is hopeful about a potential reconciliation with his summer fling.

“Kristina is an incredible girl,” he says. “She’s bright, she’s beautiful and she has a lot to offer anyone. Whoever ends up with her is lucky and if I’m that guy, I would be incredibly lucky.”

As far as returning to the franchise — Bachelor 2019 anyone? —Unglert says he’d consider it.

“If I was at a point in my life where it made sense for me and I was financially and emotionally in the right spot, I would think about being the Bachelor,” says Unglert. “I think I have a long way to go before I’m ready, but at the end of the day everyone wants to find love.”

Your Questions About Breast Cancer Screening Answered

Confused about breast cancer screening and mammograms? You are not alone, says Susan Kutner, MD, general surgeon and chair of Kaiser Permanente’s Northern California Breast Care Task Force. As new research emerges, mammography guidelines shift. Still, Dr. Kutner stresses that mammography is the best screening tool for breast cancer right now.

“The purpose of a mammogram is to detect cancer early. If we detect cancer in its earliest stage and treat it immediately, side effects are less intense and survival rates are higher,” she says.

Dr. Kutner recently shared the top questions she receives from patients, as well as the information and advice she frequently provides.

When should women start getting mammograms and how often should they get them?

Overall, it is important to look at each individual woman’s risk. What we’re learning is that we can’t just say “a mammogram every year is good for everyone” – it’s too much for some. We rigorously review all evidence every two years. It’s important to have a conversation with your primary care provider about your risk factors, which include previous biopsy results, previous cancers, your personal history and your family history. You should only get a mammogram if it is going to be beneficial to you and your health.

photo of Susan Kutner, MD

Susan Kutner, MD

There is a lot of controversy surrounding women who fall into the 40-50 age group. Our evidence has shown that, as a group, not all women need to start getting mammograms at age 40. Talk to your primary care provider about the benefits and risks, specific to you. In the 50-74 age group, we see the greatest incidence of breast cancer and the greatest benefit of mammography. Typically, women in this age group have a mammogram every one-two years. For women over the age of 75, the risk of developing breast cancer continues, but they may be more at risk of developing other diseases that get in the way of early cancer detection.

Are mammograms safe?

Mammography is an X-ray. There is a very low level of radiation exposure during each mammogram. However, X-ray exposure is a cumulative process over a lifetime. Therefore, each mammogram you do get should serve a purpose to you and your health.

In addition to screenings, how can women be proactive about decreasing their risk of developing breast cancer?

Even before age 40, women should learn about and know their individual risks of developing breast cancer, and discuss with their primary care physician to tailor a screening plan specific to them. Women who have an immediate family history (mothers, sisters and aunts) of breast and ovarian cancer, especially below the age of 40, should be offered an evaluation by a genetic counselor to see if they need to start screening at an earlier age. The next step in being proactive involves making healthy lifestyle choices. These include getting regular exercise (30 minutes of aerobic exercise a day, five times a week), managing weight, avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, and maintaining a healthy diet as much as possible.

What does the future of breast cancer screenings look like?

It’s possible that breast cancer screenings in the future will not be imaging tests. Since breast tissue is so variable, we may need to look at other ways to screen for breast cancer that have not been fully addressed before, such as a blood test for cancer markers. Overall, in the next phase of intervention and research, we will continue to improve — we’ve already gone from analog images to digital, and 3D is now emerging. It takes 10-20 years to see what works and to test equipment, and we want the next step to be valuable.

We need to be careful about what we’re doing, continue to reevaluate, and ultimately ask, “how can we detect cancer early?” We don’t want to over-diagnose or over-treat cancers. We are routinely looking at research to answer, “what are the recommendations?” and “how do screenings impact women at different ages?”

For example, some ask why self-exams have gone out of favor and why we don’t stress that like we used to. With self-exams, it is difficult to detect cancer early because cancer usually starts a little deeper in the breast, which makes it harder to feel it. This doesn’t mean we should ignore our bodies and subtle signs or that self-exams don’t have value.

Breast cancer dramatically affects women and their families. We need to continue to get better at treating it. We also need to keep in mind that whatever we do to improve breast cancer risk and decrease the likelihood of dying from it, we must invest in a woman’s ability to get the information she needs to make a personal plan for her care.

5 keepsakes every angel mama should know about

by

Kelly Wilbanks

Loss is a very present reality in the world of giving birth and raising children. The statistics say one in four women experience a miscarriage. I’ve experienced one and it was heartbreaking. I remember the same out-of-body reaction I had when I got in a car accident. Something had been set in motion that I couldn’t control and I came out on the other side changed.

How do you remember a pregnancy? How do you remember a baby lost at 5 weeks (like mine) or at 18 weeks (like my friend) or a stillbirth, an infant, or a child? An embryo that did not implant during an IVF treatment? A friend of mine recently went through a failed adoption — don’t tell me that her mother’s heart wasn’t breaking. All of these dangling pieces of our family trees. Where do they go?

I asked a few momma friends how they remember their lost ones. So many responded with stories of their loss(es) and how they memorialized them. Here are a few of their suggestions coupled with my own.

1. Jewelry

Many mamas shared that they wear something, whether it be a necklace, a bracelet or a ring. It might be a birthstone, an engraved birthdate, a picture, or even a tiny urn for ashes. There are many artistic and personalized directions this kind of keepsake could go.

“I wear an urn necklace with her in it. Its my fidget spinner. For probably a year I carried her Urn in my purse…It’s a heart. Says always on my heart,” says loss mom Kira F.

Here is an urn necklace with many positive reviews. (Amazon, $ 21.99)

urn-necklace-loss

Here is another idea for a mother that has lost her baby in early pregnancy from Glassberries on Etsy. These beautiful glass necklaces are shaped as blueberries or raspberries, representing early stages in pregnancy. (Etsy, $ 53)

2. Ornaments

Holidays are tough for many. It’s a time to be with family, which can remind us of who isn’t there to celebrate with. Many mamas either made, purchased, or were given an ornament to commemorate.

“I have special Christmas ornaments for each loss. the holidays were always the hardest for me so an ornament was tough in some ways, but also gives me a reminder to reflect and remember,” says Laura R.

You can purchase this ornament with your child’s name and date of birth along with an inscription on a maplewood snowflake. (Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep, $ 17.00)

3. Jizu statues

In traditional Buddhist teachings the Jizu statue is believed to be the protector of children and the unborn. He smuggles them to the afterlife in the sleeves of his robe. The practice is moving through the west offering closure to many women who are experiencing loss.

Dannie S. says, “I have a Jizo statue for each loss. They were supposed to go in the garden but I haven’t quite found the right spot. They are still in the house with me. In time they may move outside…”

You can purchase a Jizu statue for your house or garden. (Amazon, $ 10.99)

keepsake-statue-jizo4. Project B.E.A.R. (Bringing Empty Arms Relief)

A mama who lost her first son at 37 weeks and her second son two weeks after he was born started this program. She turned her grief into this nonprofit program to help other grieving mothers. You can request one for you or a friend who has experienced a loss.

Ashleigh R. said after receiving a bear herself, “I have had these [bears] sent as a surprise to three of my dear friends whom have had miscarriages as well.”

The bears can be sent at no cost, but donations are appreciated. (Project Bear, $ 3-$ 20)

5. Memorial ash beads

This stunning bead caught my eye when another angel mama shared how her Aunt makes them. These beads are hand-made with love and compassion for the grieving families. Their unique properties are formed when a tiny amount of ash is added to a glass bead mixture. You can see more of her work at Memorial Ash Beads.

The artist, Theresa Ostertagg says, “I always ask for a (copy of) picture of the person (if available) to look at, and something written down that the family would like to tell me about the person. This helps me with my process while making the beads… I know how much it can help with the grieving process.” (Memorial Glass Beads, $ 25-55)

So many more shared how they grieved their losses from photography to tattoos to weeping cherry trees. I came to marvel at all the beautiful and unique ways these angel parents remembered their babies. To grieve is to remember and that is a beautiful thing.

Lady Gaga and Joe Biden unite to raise awareness about sexual abuse

‘It can be terrifying waking up every day feeling unsafe in your own body.’

Words – Alicia Brunker

From the editors of Instyle US

While former vice president Joe Biden and Lady Gaga may seem like an unlikely duo, they came together to shed light on a very important topic via the nonprofit organisation It’s On Us.

On Wednesday, their message to stop the cycle of sexual abuse went viral on social media, with the powerful hashtag, aptly titled #ItsOnUs, as the campaign’s calling card. In a video posted to Instagram and Twitter, Mother Monster is buttoned up in cream separates, and, with her hand on Biden’s shoulder, reveals that she’s a survivor of sexual assault.

‘I am a sexual assault survivor and I know the effects, the aftermath, the trauma: psychological, physical, mental,’ admits the Bad Romance singer.

‘It can be terrifying waking up every day feeling unsafe in your own body.’

She continues: ‘But we’re here to remind you that it’s important to reach out to someone in your life that can trust and to know that they will be there to help you. There will be someone to listen, because you know what, it’s on us.’

Biden drives home Gaga’s point, saying, ‘We want to make it real clear: it’s on us. It’s on everyone to intervene, to stop abuse when they see it and when they hear about it.’

With the Harvey Weinstein scandal still fresh on our minds, Biden and Gaga’s message couldn’t have come at a better time. Get more information about their cause at ItsOnUs.org.

News Wrap: Sessions insists he didn’t lie about Russian contacts to Senate

HARI SREENIVASAN: In the day’s other news: Attorney General Jeff Sessions insisted he never lied to the Senate Judiciary Committee about his conversations with the Russian ambassador during the presidential campaign. At a hearing today, he bridled at Democratic Senator Al Franken’s accusation that he’d — quote — “moved the goalposts” on the nature of his discussions.

SEN. AL FRANKEN, D-Minn.: First it was, I didn’t have communications with Russians, which wasn’t true. Then it was, I never met with any Russians to discuss any political campaign, which may or may not be true.

Now it’s, I didn’t discuss interference in the campaign.

JEFF SESSIONS, Attorney General: Well, let me just say without hesitation, that I conducted no improper discussions with the Russians at any time regarding the campaign or any other item facing this country.

HARI SREENIVASAN: Sessions has recused himself from the Justice Department’s investigation into Russia’s election meddling.

President Trump had new criticism today for former FBI Director James Comey over the Hillary Clinton e-mail probe. He complained again that Comey decided to clear Clinton before she was even interviewed. That’s based on newly released draft statements by Comey from May of 2016. FBI officials say it was already clear that no charges were warranted.

On another issue, the president faced fallout over the death of Army Sergeant La David Johnson in Niger this month. Congresswoman Frederica Wilson says she was with Mrs. Johnson when the president called. The Florida Democrat told The Washington Post that Mr. Trump said — quote — “He knew what he was signing up for, but I guess it hurts anyway.”

The sergeant’s mother confirmed it, but the president denied it, and White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders went after Wilson.

SARAH SANDERS, White House Press Secretary: This is a president who loves our country very much, who has the greatest level of respect for men and women in uniform and wanted to call and offer condolences to the family, and I think to try to create something from that, that the congresswoman is doing, is, frankly, appalling and disgusting.

HARI SREENIVASAN: The Post also reported on another incident today. It quoted the father of a soldier killed in Afghanistan as saying the president offered $ 25,000 from his personal account, but never followed through.

We will get more detail on all of this after the news summary.

The death toll in Northern California’s wildfires rose to 42 today. Officials in Sonoma County found the remains of the latest victim, as they searched hundreds of burned homes. Meanwhile, fire crews made new gains overnight with the help of cooler weather and low winds.

A two-time Olympic medalist says the former team doctor for U.S. women’s gymnastics sexually abused her for years. McKayla Maroney is the highest profile athlete to come forward in the scandal. In a statement today, she said Dr. Larry Nassar began molesting her when she was just 13. He’s awaiting sentencing on a child pornography charge, but has denied any sexual abuse.

More questions tonight about drug pricing. A new study finds the costs of injectable cancer drugs, approved since 1996, rose an average of 25 percent over eight years. That’s far higher than the rate of inflation. The study was based at Emory University and published in “The Journal of Clinical Oncology.”

And on Wall Street, health insurers and IBM fueled a surge in stocks today. The Dow Jones industrial average gained 160 points, more than half-a-percent, to close above 23000 for the first time. The Nasdaq rose just a fraction, and the S&P 500 was up two points.

The Duchess of Cornwall has spoken about witnessing her mother’s death from Osteoporosis

The Duchess described it as ‘agonising’

osteoporosis

Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, has spoken about the ‘agonising’ pain of seeing both her mother and grandmother die from osteoporosis. The Duchess is urging others to look after their bone health while they can as part of her role as president of the National Osteoporosis Society.

Osteoporosis is a condition where your bones gradually weaken and break. Although this is a normal part of the ageing process, people with osteoporosis lose bone density much faster than normal.

It’s not the first time that a member of the Royal family has spoken out about how health issues have impacted them personally. Prince Harry recently opened up about experiencing panic attacks, while Prince William has also spoken candidly about his mother’s battle with bulimia. Additionally, both princes alongside the Duchess of Cambridge are continuing to dismantle the stigma around mental health with their Heads Together campaign.

In an emotional article for the Daily Mail, The Duchess of Cornwall, 64, said: ‘Seeing someone you love die slowly, in agony, and knowing nothing about the disease that killed them is heart-breaking.

My mother was only 72. In those days, osteoporosis, a crippling bone disease, was seldom discussed, rarely diagnosed and usually attributed to old women with so-called Dowager’s hump. My family and I watched in horror as my mother shrunk in front of our eyes.

She lost about eight inches in height and became so bent she was unable to digest her food properly, leaving her with no appetite at all. The local GP was kind and sympathetic, but he, like us, was able to do little to alleviate the terrible pain Mama suffered so stoically.’

Her mother, Rosalind Shand, passed away in 1994, her maternal grandmother Sonia Keppel had passed away eight years earlier in 1986. The Duchess also said that in later years her mother could not breathe without oxygen, or walk around her garden even with the help of a zimmer frame.

Osteoporosis affects over three million people in the UK and women are more at risk than men, but there are things you can do to minimise your chances of getting it.

Osteoporosis

What is Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a condition that weakens bones, making them fragile and more likely to break. It develops slowly over several years and is often only diagnosed when a minor fall or sudden impact causes a bone fracture.

The most common injuries in people with osteoporosis are wrist fractures, hip fractures and fractures of the spinal bones (vertebrae). However injuries can occur anywhere in the body.

What causes Osteoporosis?

Women lose bone rapidly in the first few years after the menopause, making them more at risk than men – particularly if the menopause begins early (before age 45).

Other risk factors include:

  • having a low body mass index (BMI) and being unheathily thin
  • heavy drinking and smoking
  • a family history of osteoporosis
  • other medical conditions – such as inflammatory conditions, hormone-related conditions, or malabsorption problems

How can you prevent Osteoporosis?

The best way to prevent Osteoporosis is to take steps to keep your bones healthy. The NHS  recommends:

  • taking regular aerobic exercise (at least two and a half hours a week) plus weight bearing exercises such as running, skipping and dancing
  • eating foods rich in calcium and vitamin D (including leafy green vegetables and oily fish)
  • taking a daily supplement of vitamin D (10 micrograms)
  • giving up smoking and reducing alcohol consumption (including cutting out binge-drinking and having no more than 14 units a week)
  • getting out in the sun to trigger vitamin D production in the body

Sarah Leyland, Osteoporosis Nurse Consultant at the National Osteoporosis Society told Marie Claire:

‘If you have broken a bone easily, talk to your doctor and find out if you are at risk of further fractures. You can also ask about a ‘fracture risk assessment’ or a ‘bone check’. This means looking at factors that influence your bone strength such as your age and medical history. It will help you and your doctors understand why your bones may be more fragile than expected and also show whether you need a drug treatment.’

The National Osteoporosis Society also run a free helpline for help and support. Nurses are available between 9am and 5pm every day. They can be reached on 0808 800 0035.

Soldier’s Widow: Rep. Wilson ‘100% Correct’ About Trump’s ‘Insensitive’ Call

The widow of a fallen U.S. soldier killed in Niger this month appeared on Good Morning America, speaking publicly for the first time since his death and the subsequent media firestorm over President Trump’s “insensitive” sympathy phone call. Myeshia Johnson, widow of Sgt. La David Johnson, explained to George Stephanopoulos that on that phone call, “the president said that ‘he knew what he signed up for but it hurts anyways’ and it made me cry because I was very angry at the tone of his voice and how he said it.” She continued: “He couldn’t remember my husband’s name. The only way he remembered my husband’s name because he told me he had my husband’s report in front of him and that’s when he actually said La David. I heard him stumbling on trying to remember my husband’s name and that hurt me the most because if my husband is out here fighting for our country and he risks his life for our country, why can’t you remember his name?” Rep. Frederica Wilson (D-FL), a family friend and mentor of the solider’s, famously overheard the call and told the media it was “insensitive,” leading to an ongoing feud with the White House, in which Trump called her a “liar.” Johnson finally addressed that spat, telling ABC: “Whatever Ms. Wilson said was not fabricated. What she said was 100 percent correct… Why would we fabricate something like that?” Trump responded to Johnson later Monday in a tweet, writing: “I had a very respectful conversation with the widow of Sgt. La David Johnson, and spoke his name from beginning, without hesitation!”

I Didn’t Know About Worker’s Comp Until a Lizard Bit Me

As summer gave way to fall, Wal-Mart transformed over the course of a few days. Beach towels and boogie boards gave way to pencils, folders and backpacks. Overnight, I got reassigned from the garden section to grocery. The change proved disastrous, or at least comical.

(Image: iStock/prill)

A mere 10 minutes into my shift, I reached under some shelving to grab a small piece of trash. All at once, a sharp pain ran through my hand, and the tip of my finger became numb. “Owww!” I yelped. Whipping my head around, I caught site of the culprit. A black-and-yellow lizard darted out of the risers.

Jerome, my shift manager, screamed like a little girl. He grabbed boxes and tried to trap the lizard. In a panic I reached down for the lizard and picked it up with my bare hands. The lizard writhed in my hands, and I threw it in the nearest trash can.

“That lizard tried to eat you,” Jerome said. My heart was beating out of my chest, but I said, “It’s really no big deal.” The lizard was no more than eight inches long if you excluded its tail.

Jerome sent me to our HR representative to fill out a first report of injury. “Won’t that end the 375-days-without-injury streak?” I asked. “I would rather forgo some ice cream than have you die from lizard poison,” he said.

I walked to the HR office. Over the intercom I heard Jerome say, “We have a lizard situation in the trash can on aisle 24.”

In the office the HR representative had me fill out the report. She asked me if I needed to visit urgent care. I told her that I wasn’t too worried. She went on to explain my right to workers’ compensation insurance: “I’m serious. If you need medical attention, Wal-Mart will pay. That’s your right, you know.”

I assured her that I was fine, and I went back to work. Still, I felt thankful that my employer took the time to explain my rights.

Small Businesses & Workers’ Comp

Workers’ comp is part of a suite of business insurance coverages you may want to consider depending on your business and how many workers you employ. By law, employers who employ five or more workers are required to buy workers’ comp insurance, with the major exception of farm owners. It covers medical care for injuries or illnesses caused at work, and replaces income those employees lose if they must miss work. It also helps you protect your business from lawsuits by injured employees who may seek damages for pain, suffering and mental anguish.

Workers’ comp also covers retraining costs and compensation for permanent injuries. It even provides a death benefit should an employee die on the job. It’s not health insurance, though, and it isn’t disability or life insurance.

As an employer, you’re also responsible for informing employees that you are covered by workers’ compensation insurance.

Large companies train managers on how to handle potential workers’ compensation claims. This ensures that employees get the medical coverage that they need.

An Employee’s Perspective on Not Having Coverage

I’m not the type who wants to forgo any legal rights, but workers’ comp insurance seems to favor employees. I certainly prefer the push for workers’ comp after the treatment that I got at my first job.

As a high school junior and senior, I worked at a small Italian restaurant. The restaurant was owned by the most stereotypically Italian grandparents you could think of. Giuseppe and Maria bickered constantly in the kitchen, but they made the most delicious … everything. Only a dozen people worked at the restaurant, and we all pretended to be Italian.

One night a couple came in just minutes before closing. I seated them and took their order right away. The cook rushed through their order and had their food ready in just seven minutes. I grabbed the plates, but I noticed that the marinara sauce was missing. I told the cook to sauce the plate. He whipped around with a ladle full of steaming marinara and poured it all over the food and my arm. Tomatoes and olive oil seared my skin.

Holding in a scream of pain, I set down the plates and ran my arm under cold water. “I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry,” the cook said over and over.

Meanwhile, our manager cleaned the plates and took them out to the waiting customers. She helped me make an ice bag and sent me home with some burn cream. She didn’t suggest a trip to urgent care; she didn’t fill out a form to document the incident.

I had the right to medical attention, but my manager didn’t mention it. To be honest, I don’t think my manager or I knew about workers’ comp. Her job was to run the restaurant, not to deal with workers’ comp.

Knowing what I know now, in a similar situation, I would ask my manager to type up and sign an incident report so that, if I sought medical attention, the company would compensate me for it later.

Small employers have most of the same rights as larger employers. However, small employers aren’t likely as familiar with compliance, which can wind up hurting both the business owner and the employee. That’s why it’s important to get informed, provide employees with the information they need and provide them with the tools they need to make informed decisions.

Are you nervous about becoming a mother? You needn’t be

by

Maggie Downs

posted in Life

One night, early in my son’s life, I woke up to the sound of a crying baby.

“Why won’t somebody quiet that baby?” I thought. “Where is his mother?”

It took me a long minute to realize the mother was me. I was supposed to be soothing this screaming child.

In that moment, it confirmed everything I feared — I wasn’t fit for this. I didn’t know how to be a mom. My child deserved better.

One infant who looks shriveled and sad.

Those thoughts had also plagued my pregnancy, which was unexpected because there was nothing I wanted more than to become a mom. I knew it on a rational level, and I accepted it in my heart. Having fertility issues and pushing through pregnancy loss confirmed how much I wanted to have a child. But that didn’t stop the nagging fear that cast shadows over those early days of parenting.

I was reminded of that time when I saw this BabyCenter Community post: “Emotional … terrified to be a mom.”

Poster Kamles wrote, “I’m so scared. I’m excited for my sweet baby. But I feel so unprepared, and so overwhelmed!! I want my baby to have a happy healthy life, and that’s our responsibility! It’s all happening so fast, and I cannot believe I’m going to actually be a mom. I feel like I have no clue how to care for a baby.”

I empathized with all of that, and so did many other commenters.

LeighEliz responded, “Every good parent worries about if they’re a good parent or not. Thing is, as long as you *care* about being a good parent, chances are you’ll be a great one. Bad parents don’t care, good ones do. You’ll screw up, you’ll lose your temper sometimes, but kids are more resilient than they seem. As long as you’re trying, your kid will probably turn out just fine.”

Mommamonster89 added, “As long as they eat and pee and poop, they’ll be ok. You’ll figure the rest out as you go.”

Meanwhile, MelodyPak offered this terrific advice: “I highly recommend seeing if your hospital or birth center offers a birthing class or infant care class. We took both before my first baby and it helped a lot. The infant care class covered REALLY practical topics like how many wet diapers a day is normal, when should you call a doctor, how to know if feeding is going well, how to bathe a newborn, how often to bathe a newborn, how to find a pediatrician, umbilical cord care.”

A woman's hand holds the tiny hand of a newborn

When my son was born, I didn’t know how to change a diaper. I felt clumsy bathing him. Every time he cried, it wounded me. After weeks of screaming, I didn’t even realize he had colic; I just assumed I was doing something wrong.

The good news is that we figured it out together — although sometimes I wonder who’s raising who? — and the fear and doubts passed.

Infant in orange Halloween one-piece with a jack-o-lantern face.

Every day now I wake up and see my child, there is no question who the mother is. It’s so me, and I’m very glad to be her. I realize every moment of my life was carving the path that led to this very moment, and I am grateful. Not scared.

Are you (or were you) nervous to become a mother?

Black Women About Business (BWAB): A Soon-to-Come New Resource

Black Women About Business (BWAB) is an 11-month virtual and retreat platform for aspiring, novice, and seasoned entrepreneurs focused on education, mentorship, coaching, and funding.

BWAB founder Demarra Gardner spoke with Black Enterprise contributor Rochelle Soetan about the challenges of launching BWAB and how the organization will strive to help black business women achieve their goals.

Rochelle Soetan: When you think about black women in business what are the needs you think of for effectively scaling a business?

Demarra Gardner: I believe that we need community support that feels relevant and conducive to our needs. I think that the “tribe” is often missing for us so we end up learning about things the hard way, which is what I did in business. I believe that there is a better way forward. One of the ways that we can serve the community is by ensuring that women have better and total access to high-quality education relative [to] their knowledge and to grow their businesses. Based on all of the information that is available about access to capital, there is a huge need for women to have financial support to be able to scale their businesses.

Why black women? Why not all women?

There is a lot of focus these days on black women in a variety of capacities, particularly, in the realm of business. There are many programs that support black women in business but none like my vision for BWAB, which is really a one-stop shop.

This all-encompassing program was designed to give black women the full support they need to create a strong foundation in business and to launch and scale their businesses successfully. We are addressing everything as a whole to include self-worth, self-work, educational needs, mentoring, financial education, access to capital, and mind/body/spirit connection.

There are many women-owned organizations now that support female empowerment, black women rising, and black girl magic. What are some of the first steps that black women in business can make to remove many of the societal labels and stereotypes placed on them?

Firstly, there has to be a safe space for women to explore many of these issues. What is optimal is that there has to be an environment where women are connected by things like their identity, aspirations, and entrepreneurial goals. Having an intentional safe space to talk about these issues can encourage the internal work that needs to be done, which is quite different from the mechanics of business. You can pick up a book and learn about financial management or attend a workshop to learn about any one facet required to be successful in business. What you may not be able to acquire in many of these spaces is the self-work, inside out, which is the most challenging body of work.

Secondly, when we are taking into account who we are, how we came to be, and the messages that have not been beneficial to us, we are then able to strip ourselves from those and be accountable. As change agents, we have to facilitate these types of spaces and give women the space to be able to engage in a way that is meaningful to them. This is where the mind, body and spirit connection reside. There is also an acknowledgment that there are unique experiences to the black woman. Being able to uplift, discuss, and explore these issues will allow us to go deep in how we begin to heal as whole beings.

How will BWAB help women not only lead their own organizations but also serve as leadership examples for how others lead in business?

I love that question. What comes to mind is that I am my sister’s keeper. We talk a lot about being our brother’s keeper, but I want us to take on more of the identity of what it means to be our sister’s keeper. In an intentional way, what that looks like is a way to help black women understand that they have a responsibility to support one another, and to take pleasure in supporting one another. Oftentimes, when we do not support each other, nor do we get the support that we need essentially. Without question, we are stronger collectively.

There will be space in Black Women About Business for women to get acquainted with one another, both personally and professionally, and to assess where collaboration is most possible. At this junction, we are discussing what it means to go through this cycle in its entirety and as we reach the end of the program. We must assess what it looks like for us to give back to our communities in a really intentional way. Perhaps, we have felt and continue to feel as though we cannot support black businesses, but we absolutely can. And we can do this unapologetically.

What kinds of leadership development and industry experts will BWAB provide for entrepreneurs?

I’m collaborating with an assortment of professionals who are well-known, have a considerable following, and are known in their fields for the niche that they are bringing, be it branding, social marketing, or business planning. These partners will provide the educational support, mentorship support, coaching support as well as the funding and developmental aspects of business. At least 90% of all of the business support we will provide will be offered by black women.

How will the process work for new members from beginning to completion? And will you be able to track the progress and success of the program through market research?

Absolutely. First and foremost, the first core level will have lifetime access to all of the materials that we create. Secondly, if they want to be a part of another tribe of women, they will have to re-enroll. However, having lifetime access to the materials is critical and provides them an opportunity to further engage in a meaningful way. For example, we’ll have an annual retreat every summer which will be offered to women in both tracks, novice/aspiring and advanced, as well as women who are not a part of the black community. This will give members an opportunity to personally engage. There will be many opportunities for the women to stay involved with the work.

Regarding the market research, as a consultant, I will also be an evaluator. I feel that accurate market research and evaluation is missing from many existing programs that are providing business support. At BWAB, we will be evaluating the success of the program throughout and there will be follow-up evaluation that we implement, along with structured interviews and things of that nature. We will have case studies, long and short-term, to show the accuracy of the work that we’re doing.

BWAB will open its membership application process on Nov. 11 and will launch nationwide on Dec. 4.

More News About Cone Mills’ Closure

We normally don’t publish two posts in quick succession about the same topic, but the closure of Cone Mills – the last major selvedge denim manufacturer in the United States – is big news. Over at Sportswear International, there’s more info about the company’s future. An excerpt:

A spokesperson for the company confirmed that before shutting down ITV will deliver all orders it had committed to produce. The company also confirmed that it had to stop business for a series of reasons, including the strong competition from low-cost extra-European manufacturers and high fiscal pressure.

ITV preferred not to comment about what a local newspaper recently published about its future. According to the publication, ITV will stop production by October 2017 and asked the Tribunal to transform its current agreement with creditors (it profited from since 2014) into agreement upon liquidation. This way, if the Tribunal approves the request the company’s plant might be put up for sale and its debts might be paid with the amount earned through that sale.

Less clear seems to be its 90 employees’ future as, according to a new Italian work law reformation, unemployment benefits seem to be no longer available for companies facing difficulties.

[…]

Also ITG (International Textile Group), parent company of Cone Denim, the historical US denim manufacturer, had to take a drastic decision as it announced that after more than 110 years of continuous production, its White Oak mill in Greensboro will cease operations by the end of 2017. “Reasons for the decision were changes in the market demand that have significantly reduced order volume at the facility as customers have transitioned more of their fabric sourcing outside of the U.S,” said a corporate statement that included comments from Kenneth T. Kunberger, President & CEO of Cone Denim and International Textile Group. “Despite tremendous efforts to manage these changes, the plant’s large size provides much more capacity than is needed resulting in higher costs that cannot be supported in a sustainable business going forward.”

Did Wendy Williams Fire Staff Who Leaked Cheating Rumors About Her Husband?

Wendy Williams's Signs to Alize as National Spokesperson

Wendy Williams reportedly shook up things behind the scenes at her daily show, allegedly firing members of her staff who she believed leaked cheating rumors about her husband, Kevin Hunter.

It all came to head when an explosive report alleged Hunter, who is also Williams’ manager, was carrying on a long-term relationship with a 32-year-old massage therapist named Sarina Hudson. The report also stated that Williams not only knew about the affair, but willingly shared her husband with Hudson.

Williams and Hunter have been married since 2007 and share a 17-year-old son named Kevin Jr.

Days later, Williams used her talk show to clear up the story while proudly sporting her large diamond wedding ring.

An undisclosed source told entertainment blog The Jasmine Brand that Williams felt betrayed after the story leaked and immediately investigated where the story originated.

“She fired anyone who was connected to the story because it was not only fake, but it showed how disloyal they were to her. She can’t trust someone who would do that to her. She fired a number of her staff, including some producers,” the source said.

Williams is apparently unbothered by the rumor and will continue to stand by her man, the source states.

ENTERTAINMENT UPDATE:

Get Well Wednesday: All About Tattoos

WHAT IS THE ORIGIN OF TATTOOS?

Tattoos have been around forever with the earliest evidence of tattooing dating back to 3000 BC! This is fascinating when you think about it – because a tattoo is basically a deposition of pigment or colored ink under the skin using needles. The tattoo artist uses a hand-held machine (almost like a sewing machine) and each puncture of the skin inserts pigment under the skin.

HOW DID TATTOOS BECOME SUCH A SIGNIFICANT PART OF OUR CULTURE?

We’ve definitely seen an increase in the popularity of tattoos because of dramatic shift from a show of social defiance to an acceptable display of self-expression and an art form. Tattooing has become mainstream. 24% of Americans from the ages of 18-60 have at least one tattoo. That’s a long way from the late 50’s when tattoos really started to appear in Western culture. Clearly, tattoos aren’t just for bikers and sailors any longer! Just watch an NBA or NFL game!

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE RISKS AND SIDE AFFECTS OF TATTOOS?

All of the risks and side effects associated with tattoos are related to the introduction of the pigment (ink) under the skin. Adverse reactions can stem from the simple process of puncturing the skin and introducing the pigment with a needle.

This disrupts the integrity of the skin and can give a portal of entry to bacteria; resulting in allergic reactions; skin infections, the transmission of infectious diseases, along with immunological reactions and hepatitis. The most common complications are pain and itching.

The risk has been significantly reduced because of better health standards that mandate disposable needles and using fresh ink for each tattoo. State authorities oversee tattoo practices and vary locally – so check your state’s guidelines.

CAN TATTOOS CAUSE CANCER?

Recently, research has begun on the long-term effects of tattoos for a number of reasons: Inks can contain harmful ingredients because they are not regulated by the FDA (They considers inks to be cosmetic), therefore, there is no oversight.

Some tattoo inks are made from heavy metals. For example, reds can be made from mercury; yellows and greens from lead; whites from titanium dioxide. These metals have been linked to health issues including cancer. Other inks are made with the same ingredients found in printer ink and car paint!

Recent studies have discovered that ink injected by tattoo needles containing hazardous substances does not stay localized but travels to other parts of the body.

Tattoo ink has been found in the other parts of the skin, around blood vessels and in lymph nodes. We don’t know what that means long-term.  So as far as tattoos causing cancer, the jury is still out about the long-term effects – but you should be aware of this when you decide to get a tattoo.

THERE WAS A STORY IN THE NEWS RECENTLY ABOUT A MAN DYING AFTER SWIMMING WITH A NEW TATTOO. WHAT ARE SOME RULES TO FOLLOW AFTER GETTING TATTED?

Yes, and this was an avoidable tragedy. What seems to have occurred was the young man went swimming in the Gulf of Mexico 5 days after getting a tattoo. Remember, the insertion of the needle disrupts the integrity of the skin and can give a way of entry of bacteria.

In an open body of water, this young man was infected with a vibrio vulnificus which is a bacterium that lives in warm brackish seawater. It’s normally harmless because unbroken skin protects us – but with a new tattoo, bacteria can enter the body and cause a local infection. In this case, the infection became overwhelming  causing sepsis and death. That’s why is it very important to follow instructions carefully after the procedure to avoid complications.

IS IT TRUE THAT IF YOU HAVE A TATTOO, YOU CANNOT DONATE OR TRANSFER BLOOD?

Great question. You must wait 12 months after getting a tattoo if the tattoo was applied in a state that does not regulate tattoo facilities. This requirement is related to concerns about hepatitis. A tattoo is acceptable if the tattoo was applied by a state-regulated entity following state guidelines. For blood transfusions, check with your local hospital and when donating blood, discuss your tattoo history with the health historian at the time of donation.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE RISKS OF GETTING A TATTOO REMOVED?

One of the most common tattoo complications is REGRET! So, make sure you want a tattoo, choose it carefully, have no regrets and hopefully don’t get to this point. But if you do – the good news is, tattoos can be removed by a laser treatment. It usually takes multiple treatments and sometimes can result in scarring.

Covering a tattoo with another bad version is no longer necessary! Tattoo-removal technology has greatly improved, but it can be painful and sometimes takes multiple treatments. But as always, find a reputable dermatologist in your area to do the procedure.

Tattoos can be an awesome way for a person to express themselves, however precautions should be taken.

TEXT YOUR QUESTIONS TO 646464 AND THE DOCTOR WILL ANSWER ON BLACK AMERICAWEB.COM

Q. Dr. does tattoos effect psychological effects?

A. One of the biggest complications of getting a tattoo is regret.  That feeling can affect you psychologically.  Make sure you are absolutely sure you want to get the tattoo and realize that it will be a permanent part of you.

Q. What about branding?

A. Branding is a process of burning the skin to cause a scar.  The risks include infection if not properly cared for and keloid formation.

Q. Can you keloid from tattoos?

A. Yes, you can keloid from tattoos.  Any trauma to the skin can cause a keloid.

Q. Dr. Karen. What is the risk of getting a tattoo on your face?

A. The same risks apply for tattoos on any part of the body which includes allergic reactions, infections, scars and immune reactions.

Q. Do tattoos affect the brain cells?

A. It has been reported that some nanoparticles may cause toxic effects in the brain and nerve damage. Nanoparticles have been found in tattoo ink. Further research is needed.

Q. Does the amount of tattoos play a role in the infections or interference with the MRI so if you only have 1 how likely is your risk versus 8 tattoos?

A. It’s the content in the ink not the number of tattoos.  Check with your tattoo artist on the exact ingredients of the ink used in all of your tattoos.  The heavy metals in the tattoo ink cause the problems with the MRI.

Q. Does laser removal leave a permanent scar?

A. The risks associated with laser removal of a tattoo are rare but include infection, lack of complete pigment removal and permanent scarring and skin discoloration.

Q. Do body piercings, such as daith piercings have the same level of risks as tattoos?

A. The main risks of piercing the cartilage are infections and possible contact allergy to the metal.

Q.Are Hanna tattoos more harmful than real ones?

A.Temporary tattoos are not risk-free. There is a risk of allergic reactions that may be severe and long outlast the temporary tattoos themselves.

Q. If tattooing involves ink, what does lasering off a tattoo involve? Is there more ink involved and what are the risks of the laser?

A. Tattoo removal is done with a laser which releases a pulse of energy to the tattoo to heat and shatter the ink. The risks associated with laser removal of a tattoo include infection, lack of complete removal, permanent scarring and skin discoloration.

Q. I’m a dark skin brother and I’m considering getting a tattoo however color is an issue for me are there shades of the color that can be used for darker skin?

A. Of course, there are colors for you!  Find a tattoo artist who has experience tattooing people with your skin tone.  They will be able to show you examples of their work and help you achieve the tattoo you desire.

Q. I have a tattoo on my back, that just itches so bad that I literally have to scratch so much/hard tip it leaves little scabbing on the back…what is up with that?

A. One of the risks of getting a tattoo is having an allergic reaction to the ink.  That may be what you are experiencing. I suggest you see a dermatologist, they will be able to help you.

Q.What are the effects of a tattoo and lupus

A. There is no specific problem that has been associated with tattoos in people with lupus.  It is recommended that you consult with your doctor before having the procedure

Q. About blood transfusion, Can you give blood when you have tattoos?

A. You must wait 12 months after getting a tattoo if the tattoo was applied in a state that does not regulate tattoo facilities. This requirement is related to concerns about hepatitis and other blood-borne diseases.  A tattoo is acceptable if the tattoo was applied by a state-regulated entity following state guidelines. You can check with your local government to review the state tattoo guidelines.

Q. What if you get a tattoo to cover a burn scar will that how will that affect your body?

A. If you get a tattoo to cover a burn scar your risks are the same which include, allergic reactions, scars, blood-borne diseases such as hepatitis, skin infection, and MRI complications.

Q. Do you recommend getting a tattoo if one has an autoimmune disease?

A. There is no specific problem that has been associated with tattoos in people with lupus. It is recommended that you consult with your doctor before having the procedure.

Q. Is there more risk depending on what area of the body you get the tattoo?

A.The risks are same for skin tattoos.

Joe Jonas’ Friends & Family ‘Thrilled’ About Engagement to Sophie Turner: ‘She Was Just the One’

The Jonas Brothers — and wives.

Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner are engaged, and the singer’s family couldn’t be more welcoming to their new addition. “Everybody’s very, very happy for them and their family and friends are all thrilled. Everyone loves them together,” a source tells PEOPLE of the exciting news.

Adds the insider, “She’s young but is beyond her years and is crazy, crazy mature. He’s never been like this with a girl.”

“He was such a dater before her but their relationship was much different from the start. She was just the one for him.”

The couple shared the happy news with corresponding Instagram posts on Sunday. They each posted an image of the Game of Thrones star with her hand on top of the singer’s, showing off the stunning engagement ring against their black clothes.

“I said yes,” Turner, 21, captioned the photo. Meanwhile, the 28-year-old singer wrote, “She said yes.”

The DNCE frontman’s brothers, Nick and Kevin Jonas, were among the first to congratulate the couple.

“YES!!!” Nick wrote, while Kevin similarly chimed in with, “Yeah!!!!!!!”

Nick, 25, then shared the photo of the ring on his own Twitter page to further congratulate the couple. “Ahh! Congratulations to my brother… and sister in law to be on your engagement,” he said. “I love you both so much.”

Jonas and Turner have been dating since last November, after they were spotted acting cozy at a concert in the Netherlands — although the duo didn’t become Instagram official until January.

Since then, the couple has been going steady — they even share an adorable Siberian Husky puppy together named Porky Basquiat — and were recently snapped sharing some sweet PDA while out and about in Los Angeles.

As PEOPLE exclusively reported in June, a source close to the musician said that Sophie is “different from the other girls has dated.”

The couple have kept fairly tight-lipped about their romance. “I’m in a relationship, but it’s a very private relationship,” Turner told the U.K.’s Sunday Times in July.

“I very much isolated myself for a while and forgot what was fun. Going out with friends, going out to eat, not really having a care,” she told the publication. “And people I’ve met recently in my life have drawn me out of that.”

She continued, “It really helps you own those insecurities. The things I tortured myself about before, I can forget about.”

According to the British starlet, she’s in a much more positive place in life than she was before. “I’m happier than I’ve been in a very long time,” she said.

Turner also opened up to InStyle this past spring about her high-profile relationship. “I found it easier to date someone who understands the industry or is in that world,” she said.

Here are some videos of the “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” cast recording “Let’s Generalize About Men” because it’s been stuck in our heads since Friday

Ever since the third season of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend premiered this Friday, everyone has been spontaneously breaking out in song. More specifically, everyone is singing the episode’s breakout hit, “Let’s Generalize About Men,” because it’s the hilarious misandrist anthem that the world needs right now.

One of the best things about Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is that Rebecca Bunch manages to say what everyone wishes they could say (or, in this case, sing) while also pointing out just how ridiculous it is. “Let’s Generalize About Men” is the perfect example of why Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is one of the best shows on TV. It satisfyingly expresses things that are annoying about men while also poking holes in the broad generalizations people make when talking smack with their friends.

Because the lyrics of “Let’s Generalize About Men” are just so perfect, we want to know more about it. And that’s when the beauty of social media really becomes palpable. That’s because Rachel Bloom, the brains behind Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and the actress who plays Rebecca Bunch, shared some behind the scenes videos from creating the masterpiece on her Instagram. And they’re so much fun.

In one Instagram post, Rachel Bloom showed the girls practicing the choreography.

Yes! Bloom, Donna Lynne Champlin (who plays Paula), Gabrielle Ruiz (who plays Valencia), and Vella Lovell (who plays Heather) look so amazing while body-rolling and singing the hilarious lyrics, “Let’s get super lit and not admit this is some kind of primal ritual we need now and then.”

In another video, Bloom shows the ladies singing the song at the Crazy Ex-Girlfriend table read.

If you’ve ever wanted to be a fly on the wall to see how all of the actors might react to some of the show’s outrageous songs, this is your chance.

Yeah, it’s pretty exciting that we get to see Josh’s reaction to Bloom singing, “There are not exceptions, all three million men are like this!” Considering that Josh left Rebecca at the alter, her character needs to denigrate and denounce the entire male gender, and doing that with one’s girlfriends really is a part of the healing process after a bad breakup.

We’ve all been there.

Laughing is also important, and “Let’s Generalize About Men” successfully satirizes the wine-infused nights shared among a group of girls who just need to make unfounded statements about why men are terrible. Like saying, “All every man does everyday is watch porn, eat wings, burp, fart, and snore.”

It’s all in good fun on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. And “Let’s Generalize About Men” is just about one of the funniest songs ever made.

The Sold-Out Blazer Everyone Asks Me About Is Coming Back

Confession: I write about how to shop celebrity outfits on a daily basis, but I rarely buy items I include in my own stories. About a year ago, however, Bella Hadid wore the perfect silky blue blazer, and I knew I had to have it. I immediately swiped up the House of Harlow 1960 Chloe Boyfriend Jacket ($ 198) and have worn it with countless outfits since, including with my go-to look: a band tee, jeans, and block heels.

Without fail, I get compliments every time I wear it, whether I’m at the doctor’s office or at a fashion event for work. It has the ideal oversize fit, a pretty sheen that mimics real silk, and an eye-catching blue color. Since it first launched over a year ago, it’s been sold out for a while. I recently noticed it’s getting restocked with a shipment date of November 10, so I knew I had to share the good news—you can thank me later.

Scroll down to see how Bella Hadid styled the blazer I always get compliments on and to shop it for yourself.

Blake Lively has some strong words about the Weinstein controversy

‘It’s important that women are furious right now’

Words – Arielle Tschinkel

From the editors of HelloGiggles

As we continue to learn new and disturbing details surrounding film executive Harvey Weinstein’s alleged sexual misconduct, more and more celebrities are speaking out against the behaviour.

The latest to do so is Blake Lively, who has addressed the allegations against Weinstein by saying: ‘It’s devastating to hear.’

Lively has known Weinstein professionally for some time, working with him on a film business panel in 2013 with other influential people, including former First Lady Michelle Obama, who says she is ‘disgusted’ by her ex-friend.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Lively said: ‘That was never my experience with Harvey in any way whatsoever, and I think that if people heard these stories … I do believe in humanity enough to think that this wouldn’t have just continued.’

She added: ‘I never heard any stories like this — I never heard anything specific — but it’s devastating to hear.’

Lively was quick to point out that the most important thing to do now is to listen to the victims.

‘The number one thing that can happen is that people who share their stories, people have to listen to them and trust them, and people have to take it seriously,’ she said. ‘As important as it is to remain furious about this, it’s important to also say that this exists everywhere so remember to look everywhere.

Blake Lively with Harvey Weinstein in 2015

‘This isn’t a single incident. This cannot happen, this should not happen, and it happens in every single industry,’ she said.

On Tuesday, Harvey Weinstein’s wife Georgia Chapman said she is leaving him. A spokesperson for Weinstein has said: ‘Any allegations of non-consensual sex are unequivocally denied by Mr Weinstein.’

Lively added that women are sexually harassed so often that they are essentially conditioned to ignore it. “It happens to women all over the place, all the time, to the point where women don’t even think that this is a real assault,” she said.

‘I’ve had plenty of things happen to me whether it be trying on a dress for prom at some clothing store, to a director being inappropriate, to a guy walking down the street where you don’t think, “Oh well, that wasn’t actually sexual assault — this guy just, like, grabbed my butt.”

‘It’s important that women are furious right now,’ she continued. ‘It’s important that there is an uprising. It’s important that we don’t stand for this and that we don’t focus on one or two or three or four stories, it’s important that we focus on humanity in general and say, ‘This is unacceptable.’”

Women everywhere deal with sexual harassment; from catcalling, to unwanted touching, to online encounters, and everything in between, and it’s by no means limited to the entertainment industry.

Our hearts are with victims everywhere. We are listening, and you are not alone.

T-Mobile is about to add a new limit to its unlimited plans

T-Mobile Plans

T-Mobile subscribers got some fantastic news earlier this week. Just about every other Netflix subscriber in the country is about to see his or her monthly cost rise beginning in November, as the company ups its monthly fees from $ 9.99 (standard) and $ 11.99 (premium) to $ 10.99 and $ 13.99. Meanwhile, T-Mobile recently added free unlimited Netflix streaming to most of its T-Mobile ONE and T-Mobile ONE Plus plans, and it confirmed that its subscribers won’t see any increases to the cost of their plans when Netflix’s rate hike takes effect next month.

That’s a pretty sweet deal indeed, but now we have some bad news from T-Mobile: Beginning next month, there will be a new limit added to one of the perks for the company’s unlimited plans.

Live Phone Calls Better Than Text Messages and Letters to Remind People About Colon Cancer Screening

PORTLAND, Ore. — Live phone calls significantly outperform text messages and letters as a way to remind patients to complete and return at-home screening tests for colon cancer, according to new research in the Journal of General Internal Medicine.

The study included more than 2,700 patients who receive care in safety-net clinics and who were overdue for colon cancer screening. Colon cancer screening is recommended for everyone ages 50-75.

The patients were sent test kits by mail, and 10 percent mailed back their completed tests within three weeks. Those who did not return the kits within that period were assigned to one of seven reminder interventions. These included a phone call from a clinic outreach worker (live call), two automated calls, two text messages, a single reminder letter, or a combination of these strategies.

The live phone call intervention was most effective, resulting in 32 percent of patients in this group completing and returning their test kit within six months. The text message intervention was the least effective — only 17 percent of patients in this group completed and mailed back their test.

“We knew that these patients are not as text savvy as younger patients, but we didn’t expect text messaging to do so poorly, compared to the other strategies,” said Gloria Coronado, PhD, lead author and cancer disparities researcher with the Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research. “Text messaging is a relatively inexpensive way to send patient reminders, but for this group it was also relatively ineffective.”

Patients received the various reminders in their preferred language. Phone calls were the most effective strategy for all patients, but English speakers were more likely to resond to live phone calls, while Spanish speakers were more likely to respond to the combination of a live call and two automated calls.

People assigned to receive the live call and the automated calls had more contacts with the health care system. It appears that Spanish speakers appreciated this additional contact, while English speakers may have been more likely to disregard the additional automated calls, said Coronado.

“The phone calls may help to build trust or confianza, which is an important value and motivator for care-seeking among Hispanics,” added Ricardo Jimenez, MD, co-author and medical director of Sea Mar Community Health Centers in Seattle, where the study took place.

“Our study shows that one reminder intervention doesn’t necessarily work for all patients. We need to design interventions tailored to the patient’s language and cultural preference,” explained Coronado.

Initially, at-home fecal screening tests were sent to 2,722 patients who received their health care in the Sea Mar system and who were overdue for colon cancer screening. Some of the tests were returned by the U.S. Postal Service because patients no longer lived at the address on file. After excluding these patients and the patients who mailed their test kits back within three weeks, there were 2,010 assigned to one of the seven reminder interventions.

The authors believe it is the first study to rigorously test the effectiveness of reminder strategies in a safety net system among patients with different language preferences.

Study strengths include its large, diverse sample size and ability to capture the patients’ demographic and medical information in the medical record. The study also has some limitations. Researchers could determine whether the text messages were sent to active cell numbers, but not whether patients received the text messages. They also don’t know whether patients listened to the automated phone messages or read the postcards.

The study was funded by a grant from the National Institutes of Health Common Fund and the National Cancer Institute, and is part of the larger STOP Colon Cancer pragmatic trial that aims to improve colorectal cancer screening in community health clinics in Oregon, California and Washington (UH2AT007782) (4UH3CA188640-02).

In addition to Coronado and Dr. Jimenez, other authors include Jennifer Rivelli, MA, Morgan Fuoco, MA, William Vollmer, PhD, Amanda Petrik, MS, Erin Keast, MPH, from the Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research in Portland, Oregon, and Sara Barker, MPH, and Emily Topalanchik from Sea Mar Community Health Center in Seattle..

20 Things Normal People DON’T notice about your style, but you might think they do

Maybe you don’t want to be normal. That’s fine, but the fact is that the world is full of normal people, and despite what social media and Mr. Rogers tells us, chances are you (and me) aren’t special. Sure, we can dress a bit different (or as we like to call it, “better”) than the pack, but that really doesn’t amount to a hill of beans to the vast majority of those around us. So don’t expect most/anyone to notice the following things about your look, because: 1. Most people aren’t very observant, and 2. Nobody would really care even if they did notice. Have a great day!

  1. The width of your lapels, collar spread, and tie knot complement each other.
  2. You recently switched from medium break to no break on your trousers.
  3. Your sunglasses “fit your face shape.”
  4. The brand of your watch.
  5. You’ve uploaded a new selfie/style shot to social media.
  6. Your leathers match perfectly.
  7. You slightly changed your hair style.
  8. That you’re wearing bluchers with a suit instead of true oxfords.
  9. You’re showing that perfect, 1/2 inch of shirt cuff.
  10. Your shoes just happen to be cordovan, not calfskin.
  11. Your jeans are selvedge.
  12. Your sweater is cashmere.
  13. You’re drinking really fancy bourbon/scotch/a craft cocktail.
  14. Your pants are perfectly tapered below the knee.
  15. You’ve got a little extra bit of shirt hanging out around your waist (the horror).
  16. Your jacket has no shoulder divots.
  17. The sleeve cuff buttons on said divot-less shoulder jacket are functional.
  18. You’re wearing a mechanical or automatic watch, instead of good ol’ quartz.
  19. Your tie is a 7-fold tie.
  20. That you aren’t wearing just any ol’ sneakers, you’re wearing Killshots!
