‘The Hate U Give’ Author Angie Thomas Talks About Upcoming Film and Using Love to Combat Hate

Angie Thomas’ debut novel, The Hate U Give, became an instant success, topping The New York Times best-seller list and earning multiple literary awards shortly after its release in February 2017. The book addresses the ills of modern day racism and police brutality as seen through the lens of a 16-year-old black girl named Starr Carter. Throughout the story, Starr grapples with living in two vastly different worlds: the low-income community of color where she grew up and the predominantly white prep school she attends. Her life, however, takes a tragic turn when she witnesses the fatal shooting of her best friend—an unarmed young, black man—at the hands of white police officers.

Although fictional, The Hate U Give depicts the brutal reality of racial profiling and discrimination that people of color face. It’s also reflective of the constant exposure that young people have to the killings of black and brown bodies by police in real-time via social media, like Philando Castile, whose death was live-streamed on Facebook, and Eric Garner, who was recorded on a mobile phone taking his last breaths as police choked him to death.

Censoring Literature

While Thomas has been applauded for tackling controversial themes in The Hate U Give, some critics argue that the social context is divisive and inappropriate for young adults. In fact, police in Charleston, South Carolina, have made a concerted effort to ban the book from a summer reading program for students at Wando High School. According to the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) Tri-County Lodge #3, one of the largest police unions in the country, both The Hate U Give and All American Boys by Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely depict police officers in a negative light. FOP lodge president John Blackmon even went as far as to describe the books as “an indoctrination of distrust of police.”

“Whether it be through social media, whether it be through text message, whether it be phone calls, we’ve received an influx of tremendous outrage at the selections by this reading list,” said Blackmon to local news channel News 2. “Freshmen, they’re at the age where their interactions with law enforcement have been very minimal. They’re not driving yet, they haven’t been stopped for speeding, they don’t have these type of interactions.”

He added, “There are other socio-economic topics that are available and they want to focus half of their effort on negativity towards the police? That seems odd to me.”

Written In Love

However, in an interview with Black Enterprise, Thomas said the basis of the book was written out of love and to inspire people to become more compassionate toward each other. “There’s so much love in this. And I hope that they walk away feeling that,” she said at the 2018 Essence Festival.

Thomas also talked about her excitement for the release of the book’s film adaption, which stars Amandla Stenberg (Hunger Games), Regina Hall (Girls Trip), Algee Smith (Detroit), Russell Hornsby, Common, and Issa Rae.

“I think the movie, in a lot of ways, will be cathartic, especially for people who are dealing with this every single day. I think this is an experience that will heal in a lot of ways. And it’s going to open more eyes,” said Thomas. “I think they’re going to walk away feeling even more empowered and inspired. And if, nothing else, I hope they feel seen.”

Thomas also acknowledged that the strong social context may be triggering for some audiences, especially those who have been directly affected by police brutality or are fighting against it. “I’m never going to tell a person to go beyond their own emotional boundaries or what they feel like they can or cannot handle. But I would say, give it a shot, because if nothing else, I hope you walk away from this inspired.” She added, “You have people in the [Black Lives Matter] movement who’ve read the book, who were like ‘I wasn’t sure if I should read this book because I didn’t know if it was going to trigger me.’ But then they read it and they were like, ‘this is what I needed.’”

Ultimately, she says she hopes that both the book and the movie “create more empathy” and makes a lasting impression particularly on young women of color.

“I hope that the young black girls who go into the theater or pick up my book see themselves in it and see just how amazing they are in a world that so often tells them that they’re not enough. I hope that the movie and this book shows them that they are perfect just the way they are.”

Netflix in 2018: 6 new developments you should know about

“Strong but not stellar” is the way Netflix describes its latest quarter in a new letter to shareholders.

Why the hint of self-doubt from the leading streamer? Because the service added some 5.2 million members in the second quarter, while expectations were for 6.2 new million subscribers to come on board.

But worries about slowing growth aside, what’s next for the global Internet TV giant? More great content, for sure.

“Internet video is growing globally and we are fortunate to be one of the leaders,” the letter says. “In addition to succeeding commercially, we are starting to lead artistically in some categories, with our creators earning enough Emmy nominations this year to collectively break HBO’s amazing 17-year run.”

RELATED: The best live TV streaming plans and deals in 2018

Here’s what’s new with Netflix

If you’re a Netflix customer, here’s what you need to know:

Netflix’s “Smart Downloads” feature is now available

The company’s brand new Smart Downloads feature on Android is geared to members who use the offline mode for viewing.

The beauty of Smart Downloads is it will automatically delete a downloaded episode after you’ve watched it and automatically download the next episode for you.

And because Smart Downloads works with WiFi, you’ll never use cellular data and you won’t clutter up your device’s storage!

Michael Bay’s next feature movie will be a Netflix original

You know him for big Hollywood extravaganzas like Armageddon, Pearl Harbor and the Transformers film series, among others.

But lauded director Michael Bay’s next flick will be for Netflix. It’s going to be called Six Underground and will star Ryan Reynolds.

Other famed directors who also have made or are making their next features for Netflix include cinematic luminaries like Martin Scorsese, Alfonso Cuaron, Susanne Bier, Paul Greengrass and Chris Columbus, among others.

“As traditional exhibition focuses increasingly on superheroes and sequels, our on demand service allows us to serve a wide variety of tastes,” Netflix notes.

Netflix just received the most Emmy nods of any network

Last week, Netflix got 112 nominations for the 2018 Emmy Awards, including five best series and best limited series nods.

But beyond that the Netflix nominations recognized 40 different scripted and unscripted series, as well as TV movies, limited series, documentaries, talk shows, comedy specials and series for kids.

“This is a testament to the fantastic creators we work with across all forms of television,” the company said.

Netflix believes it can co-exist in a brave new media world

The world of streaming entertainment is always changing and the competition always getting more intense.

Disney is coming out next year with its own streaming service and older competitors such as Amazon and Apple continue spending on content to draw you into their subscription-based ecosystems. Add to that the merger of AT&T and Time Warner and Fox getting ready to sell assets to either Disney or Comcast.

It all adds up to one crowded Internet entertainment landscape!

Through it all, Netflix says it will remain focused on doing what it does best: Creating and delivering great content at a compelling price point.

“We believe that consumer appetite for great content is broad and that there is room for multiple parties to have attractive offerings…Our strategy is to simply keep improving, as we’ve been doing every year in the past.”

You may see international content being promoted

In its letter to shareholders, Netflix called out a few international productions that it’s having a lot of success with right now. These included launching the second season of 3%, a Brazilian sci-fi original, and the premiere of The Rain, a Danish original thriller that’s found an international audience.

“This serves as another data point that our international originals can be important to specific countries and regions and also play well outside of their home markets,” the company notes.

A higher priced ‘Ultra’ plan may be coming

Sticking with the international theme, Netflix is testing a new premium service in Europe priced at about €16.99, which is around $ 20/month. The ‘Ultra’ plan lets subscribers watch 4K content with High Dynamic Range (HDR) quality on up to four different screens at once.

In fact, two versions of the plan are reportedly being tested, each with small differences on pricing and screen limits.

So why should you care what’s going on for European customers? Well, it could be that Netflix is floating a trial balloon in the Old World. And if the ‘Ultra’ plan plays well with consumers over there, it’s next stop could be over here!

How Meryl Streep & Cher Really Felt About Reuniting On-Screen

Meryl Streep’s not only a powerhouse talent, she’s also a powerhouse friend – and that was on full display as she showered her fellow Hollywood peers with love and joy at the Mama Mia: Here We Go Again London premiere on Monday, July 17, 2018.

When asked how reuniting on-screen with Cher, someone equally as famous as her, was after 35 years (they acted together in Silkwood in 1983), Streep gushed that it was absolutely “fantastic.”

“I came on the set the day that she sang ‘Fernando.’ That was my first day… And she just lifted the lid off the place! I mean, she steals the movie,” she told Entertainment Tonight

Oddly enough, Cher plays Streep’s mother in the Mama Mia sequel – if you think that’s weird, you’re not alone. Cher is only Streep’s senior by 3 years. But Streep said somehow, it made sense.

“She’s lived a much longer life than I have.” Ya, sure. Streep’s only won 173 awards – 3 of those being Oscars – been nominated 355 times; played a fashion Queen (Devil Wears Prada), cooking legend (Julia Child), Holocaust Survivor (Sophie’s Choice), and Prime Minister (The Iron Lady); loved and lost (her first love John Cazale died of bone cancer in 1978, she later married her current husband Don Gummer), and raised 4 children, but life experience? Cher’s had so much more. There’s tons of justification there.

Either way, Cher had nothing but love for her former Silkwood costar, telling ET, “We’ve stayed friends all these years. I cannot believe that, but [Silkwood] was my first film, and she helped me. I mean, she was unbelievable, because I had no idea what I was doing… It’s great to see her again.”

Cher & Streep’s friendship isn’t the only Hollywood duo that’s remained tight through the years. It seems Streep and her on-screen Mama Mia daughter Amanda Seyfried are also still quite chummy.

Showtime is not having Sarah Palin’s lies about Sacha Baron Cohen’s show

TwitterFacebook

Sacha Baron Cohen isn’t done with Sarah Palin.

Following Palin’s claims that Baron Cohen “duped” her into an interview for Who Is America? by passing himself off as an American veteran with disabilities, “fake wheelchair and all,” Showtime has released a statement calling out the “widespread misinformation” about the show.

“Baron Cohen did not present himself as a disabled veteran, and viewers nationwide who watched the premiere on Sunday can now attest to that,” said the network.

The episode showed Baron Cohen disguised as Dr. Billy Wayne Ruddick Jr., Ph.D. to interview Sen. Bernie Sanders. When Sanders asks if he lives with disabilities, “Ruddick” responds that he is not. Though Ruddick uses a mobility scooter, he explains that it’s just “to conserve my body’s finite energy.” Read more…

Get Well Wednesday: What You Need To Know About Hair Loss And How To Stop It

Jada Pinkett Smith recently revealed she was having trouble with unexpected hair loss, the cause of which has not been determined. Many Black women are challenged by thinning and bare edges and sometimes balding and permanent hair loss. Leading dermatologist Dr. Karen Heidleberg-Barnwell says there are some measures you can take to combat hair loss.

WHAT ARE THE MAIN TYPES OF HAIR LOSS?

There are 2 main types of hair loss; scarring (cicatricial) and non-scarring  (non cicatricial). Scarring hair loss causes damage to the follicular epithelium, causing permanent hair loss.  Non-scarring hair loss is not permanent. There are also abnormalities that can occur with the hair shaft which can be congenital or acquired. These abnormalities can cause hair breakage.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE COMMON CAUSES OF HAIR LOSS?

Male-pattern hair loss is the most common form of hair loss in men, and female-pattern hair loss is the most common form of hair loss in women. There is an epidemic of avoidable hair loss that we are seeing in young African\-American women based primarily on styling practices.

DOES YOUR HEALTH AND/OR DIET AFFECT HAIR LOSS?

Yes, your physical health and diet can affect hair loss. Calorie and protein malnutrition is associated with hair loss. In addition, hair loss is often associated with chronic diseases, post-surgery, and with medications.

IS ALOPECIA HEREDITY?

Yes, there are studies that demonstrate that the predisposition to male balding is predominantly due to genetic factors. Women with androgenic alopecia often have a family history of pattern alopecia in both male and female family members.

DOES STRESS AFFECT HAIR LOSS?

Yes, stress can affect the hair. Telogen effluvium has been associated with severe prolonged psychological stress. Although Alopecia Areata (AA) is an immune mediated form of hair loss, a link between stress and the development of AA has been described.

CAN CERTAIN MEDICATIONS CAUSE HAIR LOSS?

Yes, medications can cause hair loss.  There are numerous medications where hair loss is a side effect.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HAIR LOSS AND YOUR HAIR SHEDDING?

We have normal  hair shedding where we  lose about 100-200 hairs per day. The amount of hair we shed each day varies between individuals and there are seasonal variations.  This hair shedding does not lead to thinning.

WHAT TYPE OF DOCTOR SHOULD WE BE GOING TO CONCERNING HAIR LOSS?

The specialty of dermatology addresses all medical issues concerning the skin, hair and nails. Therefore, you should seek an evaluation from a dermatologist.

WHAT IS TRACTION ALOPECIA?

Traction alopecia is hair loss caused by too much tension being placed on the hair with styling. It is most often seen around the hairline.  Some of the common hairstyles which cause this type of hair loss include  braids, pony tails, and hair weaves.

HOW CAN HAIR LOSS BE PREVENTED?

The most important  way to avoid hair loss is to understand the causes. Understand the preventable causes of hair loss and avoid those practices.  We know that chronic tension on hair can cause permanent hair loss, so it is best to avoid those styles.  It is also important to seek treatment as early as possible if you are losing hair. The sooner the problem is identified and treated, the better the response you will have .

IS THERE A CERTAIN TYPE OF SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONER I SHOULD USE TO HELP STRENGTHEN AND GROW MY HAIR?

It is important to determine the cause of your hair loss and address that issue specifically. A good shampoo and conditioner may not solve your problem. In general, I recommend a good moisturizing shampoo and conditioner in addition to any medications needed.

DO YOU RECOMMEND ANY SPECIFIC VITAMINS OR SUPPLEMENTS?

My recommendations for supplements depend on the needs of the individual patient.  In general, topical minoxidil is helpful for hair loss and I often incorporate that into my treatment.

WHAT WOULD YOU NEED TO SEE ON MY SCALP THAT WOULD PROMPT A SCALP BIOPSY?

A  scalp biopsy is often used in the evaluation of a patient with hair loss.  If you have hair loss, don’t be surprised if your doctor recommends a biopsy, which is very helpful in the overall evaluation.

DO I NEED TO TAKE A BLOOD TEST TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE?

There are some types of hair loss where blood work is necessary, but it is not always required.

Dr. Heidleberg-Barnwell answers your ‘Text Tom’ questions on the next page.

Can anything be done about thinning hair from dialysis? Been on it 4 years and hair has thinned.

Hair loss associated with dialysis is a common problem and can be treated. I would suggest that you see a board-certified dermatologist in your area.

My hair has not come back from chemo 7 years ago. Any hope that I can regrow hair?

In general, hair loss associated with chemotherapy is usually non – scarring and doesn’t cause permanent hair loss. However, more recently there has been permanent hair loss associated with some chemotherapeutic medications. I would suggest that you see a board certified dermatologist for an evaluation and discuss your previous treatments.

What can be done for women with alopecia? My daughter in law is looking for option.

There are many treatment options for hair loss.  Your daughter in law needs to be evaluated by a board certified dermatologist to identify the cause of her hair loss and based on that, she can receive appropriate treatment.

Is wearing natural hair healthier or better for us, even if we are just braiding it and wearing wigs, weave, etc.?

Wearing tension-causing hair styles, which include braids and hair weaves, can cause permanent hair loss.

How does hair dye effect hair, especially bleaching?

Permanent hair dye penetrates the hair shaft.  As a result, sometimes the hair becomes dry, brittle and breaks more easily.

I have shallow roots. When my hair comes out it, comes out at the roots. Is there anything I can do to stimulate root growth?

It is normal to have hair shedding.  We may lose 100-200 hairs per day, but this varies between individuals.Your hair loss  should  be evaluated by a board certified dermatologist to determine if your hair loss is normal or requires treatment.

How do I find a good dermatologist in South Florida? I have been to dermatologist that were not that good. My son has growth on the tip of his finger under the finger nail. The dermatologist froze it, then burned it but it has come back.

I recommend contacting the American Academy of Dermatology.  It is the largest, most influential and representative dermatology group in the U.S. You can find a listing of dermatologists in your area.

Does being diabetic cause hair loss?

Hair loss is sometimes seen with chronic diseases. You should have your hair loss evaluated by a board-certified dermatologist to receive appropriate treatment.

My wife loses hair whenever she combs it. She told me that it’s normal. What do you think is happening here?

Your wife is probably correct.  It is normal to lose hair daily with hair combing.  Some people can lose 100-200 hairs daily!  However, if there is a concern, she should be evaluated by a board-certified dermatologist to see if her hair loss is normal.

I have a 2-year old granddaughter and her hair has patches. What can we do now to restore her hair?

There are many causes of patchy  hair loss in children. I suggest you take her to a board-certified dermatologist for evaluation.  Most causes of hair loss in children can be treated.

I have had universal alopecia for over ten years. I’m still hoping for a cure.

Alopecia universalis is a difficult type of hair loss to treat. The good news is that there are new medications that are being tested. Keep in contact with your dermatologist regarding JAK inhibitors.

I am 31 years old. Within the last 2 years, my hair has thinned out a lot & will not grow anymore. My hairdresser has even commented on the thickness and my length. Is there anything I can do to increase the thickness and get my hair to start growing again? I don’t wear braids or hair extensions.

Sometimes we can damage our hair with heat and styling practices. These practices can make our hair break and become shorter and thinner and it seems that the hair isn’t growing.  Of course, there are other things that can make your hair thinner.

I would suggest that you see a board-certified dermatologist to evaluate your hair.  The dermatologist can help to identify the cause of the hair loss and make appropriate recommendations.  It doesn’t sound like permanent hair loss which is great!

Dr. Karen, how do I find a qualified Black dermatologist in my area?

The National Medical Association (NMA) is the leading organization of African0-American physicians. The NMA is the largest and oldest national organization representing African-American physicians and their patients in the United States.

Is a visit for hair lost diagnosis and treatment covered by insurance or is it considered cosmetic and you have to pay out of pocket? And if that is the case, about how much would this cost run you?

The coverage for a  hair loss evaluation by a dermatologist depends on your insurance.  Check with your policy and they can estimate your out of pocket expenses.

I’m a 70 years. young woman  with thinning around my hairline. I prefer wearing my hair away from my face. I have thick head of hair, thank God, however does thinning hairline come with age?

Thank God for thick hair! What a blessing!  Make sure that your hair styles are not putting tension on your hairline because this styling practice can cause thinning.

I’m 48 and have what I think is the typical male-pattern baldness…I call a sunroof….is there any treatment for someone my age?

As I mentioned in my interview, male-pattern hair loss is the most common form of hair loss in men. You should be evaluated for your hair loss. Depending on the extent of your hair loss, you may respond to therapy.  Therapy my include topical medications, oral medications, injections, laser, or a combination of these treatments. If all else fails, there is always hair transplants!

What can I use for eczema and flakes on my 9-year-old daughter’s scalp? Is there any oil that is safe to use on the scalp for adults or children?

The treatment of a flaky scalp often requires medical treatment if it doesn’t respond to over the counter remedies such as tar shampoos.

Dr. Karen Heidleberg-Barnwell, best known as  “Dr. Karen” is a board-certified dermatologist, with a successful practice in Detroit, Michigan.  She received her medical degree from the Howard University College of Medicine and completed her internship in internal medicine at George Washington University Hospital. She did her dermatology residency at the Mayo Clinic. At Heidelberg Dermatology, Dr. Karen is the managing partner and chief physician.

Everything You Need to Know About ‘Fortnite’ Season 5

It seems like only yesterday that we were mourning the loss of Dusty Depot and celebrating the new superheroes who came to town, but already Season 4 in Fortnite is over and Season 5 is bearing down upon us at a rapid pace.

For weeks we have seen hints of what is to come, the crack in the sky the rocket created seems to have opened some kind of time rift and that has brought in some strange items while removing others. But what does it all mean we hear you ask, well we still don’t know all the details of what Season 5 will bring, but we have a pretty good idea.

When Can I Play Fortnite Season 5?

Season 5 is available right now and servers seem to be fairly stable, however this could change when more people head home at the end of the day, so don’t be surprised if there are a few tech issues at some point today.

The season will run until September 25th, giving you plenty of time to earn those sweet new skins.

Fortnite Season 5 Battle Pass Redline Drift Huntress skins cosmetics
The new Redline, Drift, and Huntress costmetics.

How Much is the Season 5 Battle Pass?

As always you will still be able to enjoy the classic Fortnite experience without having to pay a penny, and you will also get to experience more than a few changes coming with Season 5, such as the map changes.

However to get the full seasonal experience you will need to drop some cash on the Battle Pass. Once again the Battle Pass will set you back 950 V-Bucks, which is around around £8 or $ 10USD in real money.

Or you can get the Battle Pass and instantly unlock the first 25 tiers for 2800 V-Bucks.

What does the Fortnite Battle Pass give me?

Fortnite‘s Season 5 Battle Pass is pretty similar to the previous ones we have seen. They offer access to exclusive cosmetics and skins, that are often only available to battle pass owners. Some will be unlocked as soon as you buy the pass, others will have to be earned through completing challenges and quests tied to the Battle Pass. There’s also a ton of XP boosts and V-Bucks to be earned by unlocking the 100 tiers.

As soon as you purchase the Battle Pass you will get the Drift and Huntress skins. The latter is a viking shield maiden, while initially the former just looks like a fairly standard guy. However he has alternate styles that can be unlocked which make him a lot cooler.

Fortnite Season 5 Battle Pass Sledgehammer Rook Sun Strider skins cosmetics
The new Sledgehammer, Rook, and Sun Strider cosmetics.

As you progress through the tiers you’ll unlock other cosmetics such as Redline, a female biker, Sun Strider, a lifeguard skin, Sledgehammer, which bears a striking resemblance to Blackbeard from Rainbow Six Siege, and Rook, which seems to be some kind of secret service agent style skin.

Finally if you hit tier 100 you will get your hands on Ragnarok, an upgradeable skin that really is the best of this season so far. It will take a lot to earn this, or you can just buy tires with V-Bucks if you have a load of spare cash, but the reward is pretty sweet.

Finally you’ll also have access to the weekly challenges. This time three of them will be available to those without Battle Passes, while another four will be Battle Pass exclusive.

What is Season 5’s theme?

Unlike Season 4 where everything was clearly related to superheroes in some way, Season 5 seems a little more disjointed. In fairness, this makes sense with the Worlds Collide theme.

Many of the skins are based around historical times, whereas a lot of other cosmetics seem to be based around the beach, perhaps because of the new desert biome on the map. Seeing Vikings next to a lifeguard with an inflatable unicorn back bling certainly wasn’t what we were expecting, but we are not complaining!

Having a general theme such as Worlds Collide means that Epic can do literally anything and it would make sense here, so expect the rest of the season to throw up a lot of surprises and things we could never even imagine.

What changes has Season 5 Brought With it?

A new season means a big old patch, and with it comes a lot of gameplay changes. The big new addition is the All-Terrain Kart, a four-person vehicle that can transport your entire squad around the map. It functions just like the two-person cart, but is just a little bigger and its roof acts as a bounce pad, which is sure to lead to some amazing stunts once people learn how to use it.

The map has also seen some pretty big changes. A new desert biome has been added to the south east corner of the map, destroying the Moisty Mire. This area has been totally overhauled, with some massive hills and mountains added and even some dinosaurs to scare the living daylight out of you when you round a corner to see one.

Fortnite Season 5 map Paradise Palms
Let's go to Paradise Palms and see some dinosaurs.

This has also resulted in the prison in this corner of the map disappearing, being replaced with a new area called Paradise Palms, which certainly seems to be more interesting than the prison ever was. Elsewhere, Anarchy Acres has also been replaced — this time with a golf course known as Lazy Links. Oh, and Dusty Divot is slowly returning to its former glory as even more trees have sprouted in the crater.

A few smaller changes have tweaked how shotguns work, meaning you can’t fire another shotgun for a short while after firing your original one. Pellet hits are now shown in the reticle and spread is now consistent and not random, which should reduce those infuriating moments where you aim a pump directly at someones head only for every pellet to miss.

The circle has also been tweaked in the later stages to be slightly more random. The Switch version has been given motion controls and the mobile sound indicator is now available on all platforms, but your game sounds will be muted if you use it. Of course there is also a whole host of bug fixes and smaller tweaks that you probably won’t even notice for quite a while.

Fortnite Shotguns
Get ready to learn static spread patterns…

This is just the beginning. With 10 weeks of Fortnite Season 5 content coming our way you can be sure that there will be even more new additions. Expect new cosmetics, challenges, map tweaks and most likely some massive, game-wide events such as the rocket launch we saw just a few weeks back.

These rifts that have opened up could literally result in anything from any time coming into the world of Fortnite, and with the team at Epic Games already showing off how crazy some of their ideas are you can only expect things to get strangers as the season progresses.

Samira just opened up about villa life and why she chose to leave Love Island

‘Dani and Jack are going to get married, have kids and all of that’

REX

Love Island 2018 is getting dramatic, with the past week pushing the show to breaking point.

Tonight’s episode reached climax when Samira Mighty, one of the show’s originals, chose to leave the villa, just days after her ‘Prince Charming’ Frankie was voted off the show.

‘I finally got what I wanted and now I feel like I’m back at square one’ she told Dani, breaking the news to her fellow islanders the next morning.

‘This decision is so, so hard,’ she explained. ‘I’m devastated by it but I think that it is the right thing to do – just follow my heart because I’ve never done that before. I’ve always taken the back seat and now I need to go for it head on and leave and just go for Frankie. I’ve got to go with my gut feeling.’

So the 22-year-old left the villa, but how is she feeling now that she’s on the outside?

REX

How do you feel about leaving the villa?

‘I feel very confident and very proud of myself. I feel like it was the right time for me to leave. I’m obviously devastated to be leaving my best friends but this is the perfect time. I’ve found what I wanted to find and it was Frankie so I’m going to go and get him. I do see a future with Frankie, I’ve
never met anyone like him before. He is gorgeous and we did have a genuine connection. I wouldn’t change anything about my time in the villa, I have no regrets.’

Are you looking forward to seeing Frankie?

‘I am really excited and also really nervous. All we know is our villa relationship so I’m really excited to see how it’ll work on the outside world and if we are compatible and do like each other as much as we said. I’m a bit nervous but mostly excited. Just before he left he said “see you in three weeks, see you soon” and he said to a few of the boys that he was going to wait for me so it feels positive at the moment and good.’

Who did you click with the most in the villa?

‘I clicked with everyone. Everyone was my best friend! But I’d say Dani, she is the best, most amazing girl. She always kept me positive. I love Megan so much, we got really close and what she has with Wes is very genuine. I also got on really well with Wes too. Georgia is super confident and bubbly and that’s exactly what she’s always like. I love her, we got really close and I did feel for her with everything she went through with Josh but she is happy with Sam now. I love that girl.’

REX

What are your hopes for Dr Alex?

‘Alex is so unique. He is his own self, he has never changed and he needs a girl to come in for him and not have eyes for anyone else. I just hope that Alex finds love because he has waited long enough. I really like Alexandra, she does seem really nice. And she was genuine about her feelings for Alex when she came in. He really makes her laugh and crack up. There are other single guys in there and they want to take her out… It’s all up to Alexandra, she has the power.’

What is your take on villa life?

‘Villa life is a roller coaster. It is absolutely amazing, I walked around pinching myself that I was there. You go through ups and downs but mostly ups because you’re there with amazing people. You are meeting boys and girls and making friends. It is very intense but your emotions and feelings in there are all real. You completely forget about the cameras. You are so immersed in everyone else.’

REX

What was your standout Love Island memory?

‘I loved the Ministry of Sound party night. I also really enjoyed the stripping dance off challenge. I loved my outfit, my silver thigh high boots! It was nerve-wracking but so fun. The challenges were also amazing and finally meeting Frankie, that was a big milestone for me in the villa.’

Who do you think could be engaged by this time next year?

‘Definitely Dani and Jack. 100 per cent. They are going to get married, have kids and all of that. They are amazing together. And maybe Josh and Kaz, they are very close.’

Who do you think is going to win?

‘Dani and Jack because they have had such a journey from the start. They were coupled up on day one, then she had a little dip where she wasn’t sure how she felt about him. Then Hayley said she fancied Jack and then Jack tried to get a reaction out of Dani by speaking to Hayley. That was ages ago now, I’m even having to jog my memory! They are like magnets to each other now. I love them and I know they really love each other.’

Open Thread: What Are You a Snob About?

What are you a snob about? If you read our post earlier this week about brain candy books and other fun summer reads, you probably had one of three responses: (1) “Hmm, I should check out some of these,” or (2) “Eh, not my type of book,” … OR (3) “Ugh, why does anyone read those kinds of books, anyway?” Some of us are just book snobs — and all of us are snobs about something or other, right? We thought general snobbery would be a fun topic for a open thread on the day after a disorienting middle-of-the-week holiday, so here’s the question: What ARE you a snob about — and what are you decidedly NOT snobby about? Did you used to have things in the first category that, over time, moved into the second category? How about vice versa — have you gotten more snobby about anything as you’ve gotten older and wiser?

Earlier this year, we got almost 100 comments on our “What are you drinking in 2018?” open thread, so clearly many readers are very discerning about wine, cocktails, and so on — and Kat readily admits that she’s a gin snob. (She wrote that book post, so she’s obviously an equal-opportunity reader; she also notes that she generally prefers simple Folgers coffee rather than fancy stuff.) So let’s hear it, ladies: What are YOU a snob about? Clothes, bags, jewelry, or shoes? Makeup and skincare? Food, restaurants, cookware? Wine, tea, coffee? Musicbooks, TV, movies? Home decor(Just in case it needs to be said, there are no right answers here! We just thought it would be interesting to hear your thoughts on what’s worth the splurge and what isn’t…)

To me, the most interesting aspect of this is what you once were snobby about but eventually became more open-minded about. I used to be a book snob (hey, I was an English major, so it came easily), but not anymore — today I read everything from literary nonfiction about little-known historical events to “contemporary romance.” I also used to be a music snob — and the same thing happened for me with movies. I used to see most of my movies at an independent theater, and those films were definitely not going to become blockbusters. In 2015, in a “regular” theater, I saw the trailer for Captain America: Civil War, and my reaction was, “Another superhero movie?! There are SO many superhero movies!” Well, since then, I have become something of a Marvel geek and now have 13 movies and 6 TV series under my belt (ha, not a superhero belt, just a regular one). I have to say, I kinda get chills when I’m sitting in the movie theater and hear the Avengers theme. (Grammar, though? I think I’ll always be a grammar snob.)

What about you? What have you always been a snob about, either outwardly or secretly? What did you USED to be a snob about but no longer are — and what made you change your thinking? What are your guilty pleasures regarding food, Netflix binges, and so on?

Bonpoint Gets Guests Reminiscing About Childhood

HAPPY DAYS: Bonpoint’s show Wednesday afternoon at the Palais de Tokyo had guests musing about childhood. Appropriately so, it turns out: The venue was chosen so that guests could afterward meander through the “Another Banana Day for the Dream-fish” exhibition about childhood currently on show there, sponsored by the luxury children’s wear label.
Laure Hériard Dubreuil’s four-year-old son Marcel was walking the show for the first time. “I’m very nervous, much more nervous than he is,” she shared beforehand.
There was no need — most of the kids on the tree-lined runway looked to be having a ball, with two youngsters squirting each other with water pistols as they walked, another scooting around on a skateboard, his scuffed Vans proving that it was not just for show.
Hériard Dubreuil’s favorite childhood memories are of spending family time in the cognac region – her family produces the Rémy Martin brand. “Having lots of brothers and sisters and having a farm,” she said. “And getting drunk from the vapors of the cognac coming out of the barrels.”
For Lauren Santo Domingo, it was about being carefree. “Just being outdoors and free and unscheduled,” she said. “That would be nice.”

Kim Kardashian West ‘had to’ confront Tristan Thompson about Instagram block

OHMYGOSSIP — Kim Kardashian West found it “really awkward” when Tristan Thompson blocked her on Instagram.
The 37-year-old reality star shared a video last week of the basketball player – who is in a relationship with her sister Khloe Kardashian – altering his social media settings so she could see his posts again and she admitted it was a “spur-of-the-moment” decision to put him on the spot and confront him about the online rift.
She said: “I did [the video] just spur-of-the-moment. I thought about it, I was like, ‘Wait a minute, you have your phone out and this is really awkward ’cause you blocked me,’ and, ‘What’s up? We’re all in the same room again, can I get a follow, can I get an unblock at least?’”
And Kim admitted Tristan – who was accused of being unfaithful to Khloe shortly before their daughter True was born in April – didn’t know she was going to film their confrontation.
But she insisted in an interview with ‘Extra’: “I had to do it, I had to!”
The ‘Keeping Up with the Kardashians’ star – who has children North, five, Saint, two, and Chicago, six months, with husband Kanye West – believes it is important to always support her family.
She said: “I was just raised, you know, that blood is thicker than water and family first, and that’s also what keeps us sane.
“When we have those family dinners and we just get to hang out and be together through all the craziness that we’ve been through, we love each other and support each other, so it’s always just fun to be together and no matter what we’ll support each other, and we know that.”
In her Instagram Story post at Khloe’s birthday party last week, Kim could be seen pointing at 27-year-old Tristan as she said: “Alright guys, so, what do you think? It’s Khloe’s birthday, do you think I should ask this guy to unblock me?”
The Canadian basketball player could be seen in the background of Kim’s video, laughing to himself and he then said: “For Khloe’s birthday, I think it’s only right.”
To which the brunette beauty replies: “I’m unblocked guys!”
Kim also joked about trying to discover the passcode to Tristan’s phone so that Khloe, 34, can keep a close eye on him.
But the professional sports star admitted: “She knows it.”

What ‘So Money’ Host Farnoosh Torabi Wants You to Know About Credit Scores

Do you know your credit score?

Better question: Are you sick of hearing us tell you over and over how important it is to check your credit report and know your credit score?

It may seem like we’re beating a dead horse, but the truth is, you can’t ball on a 450 credit score, and we’re committed to putting more money in your pocket so that you can be the baller you’re meant to be.

A survey released by the Consumer Federation of America and VantageScore suggests the advice is working. The percentage of respondents who said they’ve obtained their credit scores in the past year rose from 49% in 2014 to 57% in 2018.

Credit expert Farnoosh Torabi, who hosts the “So Money” podcast, says she isn’t surprised.

“There’s been momentum building ever since the recession,” she told The Penny Hoarder.

News coverage of rising interest rates impacts lending, which trickles down into people’s credit lives and wallets.

Another aspect fueling the rise is easy access to credit scores.

“I’ve been covering personal finance for all of my career, and back in the late ’90s and early 2000s, there was no go-to place to get your credit score as a consumer,” Torabi said. “But now, there are more ways to access it.”

Great, You Know Your Credit Score. Now What?

Knowing your credit score is nice and all, but it means very little if you don’t do anything about it.

But you all are doing something about it.

The number of people who’ve checked their credit score has increased, and so has the number of people taking steps to increase their scores, according to year-over-year findings from Chase Slate’s 2017 credit outlook survey.

These steps include paying off debt, keeping credit usage low and making an effort to pay down credit statements in full.

We can all agree it’s easier to take the initial steps to improve your finances when you know what’s going on and exactly what you need to do.

A Lot of People Are Still Confused About Credit

The Consumer Federation study showed large majorities could correctly identify three key factors used to calculate credit scores:

  • Missed payments, 86%
  • High credit card balances, 81%
  • Personal bankruptcy, 79%

But significant minorities incorrectly thought that age (41%) and marital status (38%) are used in this calculation.

“Some people think the older they are, the better their credit score will be,” Torabi said. “I think they confuse that with the length of their credit history.”

A lot of people also incorrectly believed tax liens (64%), medical collection accounts less than 6 months old (62%) and civil judgments (63%) are used to compute credit scores.

Most people knew steps to take to improve your credit score, but little more than half (56%) knew all of them.

Here’s Why Credit Scores Are So Important

“Largely we think of credit scores and their ties to qualifying for homes, loans and credit cards, but there’s other stuff, too,” Torabi said. “I think if [people] knew the extent to which [their] credit score actually makes an impact, it would make people more interested to see what their credit score is, and learn how to improve it.”

When you sign up for cable plans or insurance, providers will often do a credit check to make sure you’re paying your other bills on time. And if you’re renting, landlords and property managers will also run a credit check and review your credit score.

But the biggest reason to know your score has nothing to do with what you want to do in the future. It’s all about what you’ve done — or rather, haven’t done — in the past.

Credit reporting mistakes and identity theft are common occurrences, and they’re not going away anytime soon.

So even if you’re not planning on buying a house, financing a car, or opening a credit card in the near future, it’s still super important to know your credit score and monitor your credit report.

At The Penny Hoarder, we publish no shortage of articles telling you why you should check your credit score, how to improve your credit score and how amazing life has gotten since so-and-so raised their credit score.

Maintaining healthy credit is just like maintaining a healthy body.

“If you’re trying to stay healthy in your physical life, you should get on that scale and face that number, as hard as it can be,” Torabi said. “Numbers don’t lie. [Your credit score] will give you the honest truth, and from there, you can improve.”

Jen Smith is a staff writer at The Penny Hoarder. She gives money saving and debt payoff tips on Instagram at @savingwithspunk.

Renzo Rosso Teases Diesel Campaign About Hate

LOVE IT OR HATE IT: Diesel’s Renzo Rosso showed up at the Maison Margiela show on Wednesday wearing a T-shirt that said “Haute Couture” – only with the “u” crossed out so it read “Hate Couture.”
The slogan was a teaser for Diesel’s fall campaign, the label said in a statement provided exclusively to WWD. “Diesel’s Haute Couture will be a bold message towards haters worldwide — and an invitation for everyone to step up, face and own the negative messages we receive every day,” it said.
The campaign is a statement against today’s trolling culture, explained Rosso, whose OTB group owns Maison Margiela.
“Diesel is a brand that has always done something, provocative, crazy, with irony, and of course the irony today is to take away the ‘u’ and becoming ‘a’ and doing more to play with the ‘hate,’” he told WWD before the show.
“There’s so much hate on social, so many people want to say ‘bull****’ against the others, but today we take the opportunity of haute couture to rebalance with the hate,” he added.
The ads will be revealed on Sept. 1, Rosso said, promising: “This campaign will be a super magic atomic bomb, something incredible.”

What You Need to Know About World Cup Player Jimmy Durmaz

On Saturday, Sweden’s national soccer team took on Germany during their 2018 World Cup Group F match up. Unfortunately for Sweden, the tight game came down to a winning free kick for Germany precipitated by a mistake made by Swedish player Jimmy Durmaz late in the game. This is soccer: it’s a beautiful game, yet mistakes happen all the time. But Durmaz has since become the target of racially-charged invective on his Instagram, suffering online abuse that questions his nationality.

In a statement video released Sunday, Durmaz addressed the backlash, backed by the support of his teammates.

“I am a footballer at the highest level; being criticized is something we live with,” Durmaz says according to ESPN’s translation from the Swedish. “But being called ‘f—ing immigrant’ and ‘suicide bomber,’ and having death threats made against me and my children is completely unacceptable,” he went on. “I am Swedish, and with pride I wear our shirt and our flag. I want to thank the fine, wonderful people who spread joy. It warms us all. We stand united. We are Sweden.” His team also rallied behind him, as did the Swedish Football Association, which reported the abuse to police on Durmaz’s behalf, according to the Guardian.

In the caption for the post, he added in English, “I’m humbled and overwhelmed from all the lovely messages I’ve received from all of you. It really warms my heart after what happened last night. Keep posting love so it will overcome all the hate out there.”

Where is Jimmy Durmaz From?

Durmaz is Swedish. His Assyrian parents made their way north to Sweden from Turkey, according to the Associated Press.

Where does Durmaz play?

Currently, Durmaz plays for the French football club Toulouse as a midfielder; he was signed in 2016. During the 2018 World Cup in Russia, he has been rotated in as a substitute for the Swedish national squad. He’s been playing professional soccer since his teens, starting out with Swedish clubs before playing for Turkish, Greek and now his French team. This is his first World Cup.
ftoday

When will Durmaz play next?

Despite their loss, Sweden is still in the mix for the 2018 World Cup. They’re facing off against Mexico Wednesday in their final Group F match. While Durmaz is not on the starting lineup, he may play as a substitute. Both teams are hoping for a win to secure their advancement chances, although draws could also work in their favor.

Michelle Wolf Compares Ivanka Trump to Herpes: ‘You Always Show Up When We’re About to Get F*cked’

YouTube

Comedian Michelle Wolf helped set off America’s current “civility” debate by making jokes at the expense of Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Kellyanne Conway and others in the Trump administration at this year’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner, a move that landed her at the center of new GOP ad that condemns the “unhinged” Left heading into the 2018 midterms.

But just as she refused to apologize for her jokes about the White House press secretary, Wolf has only doubled down on her criticism. And this week on Netflix’s The Break, she shared with viewers some specific lines liberals can use should they take Rep. Maxine Waters’ advice and confront Trump administration officials in public.

While Wolf said she agrees with Waters’ sentiment, she explained, “You can’t just casually harass these people, you have to insult them specifically,” adding, “‘You’re a cunt’ doesn’t hurt them. It’s on their vision board.”

Hugh Grant Gets Candid About Becoming A Father And Finally Marrying At 57

After starring in a number of romantic comedies and falling in love on-screen, Hugh Grant has finally found romance off-screen and is happier than ever. The 57-year-old British actor exchanged vows with Anna Eberstein last month, and Grant says he regrets not getting married sooner.

During a recent appearance on The Today Show, the Notting Hill star joked, “You don’t think I’m too young?” He went on to say that it’s “really nice” being married, and he can’t pretend it isn’t. Grant also said he is lucky to have such a great wife, and he loves her.

On May 25th – two months after Eberstein gave birth to their third child – she and Grant exchanged vows in London. The couple also has a five-year-old son and 2-year-old daughter. Grant is also the father of a 6-year-old daughter and 5-year-old son with receptionist Tinglan Hong.

It’s not easy having five kids under the age of seven, and Grant told Savannah Guthrie that traveling poses some serious challenges. He said it is “unspeakable,” and you go through the dilemma of deciding if you actually travel with them or make an excuse, so they go with their mom or nanny.

Grant’s ex, Elizabeth Hurley, accidentally revealed back in March that Eberstein had given birth. When talking to E! News, she said that Grant is a great guy and she sees and speaks to him a lot. “He’s now a father of five, he has five kids, and he’s a great dad,” said Hurley.

Two days later, during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, she confirmed Grant and Eberstein’s baby news by saying they had another one, and he was “over 50 when he spawned them all.”

The Austin Powers star also said that she and Grant have been friends for 31 years, and he is still her “best friend in the whole world.” Hurley and Grant were together for 13 years, and they split in 2000.

As for his latest project, Grant recently starred as Jeremy Thorpe in the three-part Amazon series A Very English Scandal. Thorpe was a member of the British Parliament during the 1960s who went on trial for allegedly plotting to kill his former lover.

Hugh Grant’s latest project, A Very English Scandal is available for streaming on Amazon Prime.

Celebrity Stylist Zerina Akers Opens Up About Her Personal Journey, Black Designers, and Working with Beyoncé [Photos]

If you’ve been wondering why Beyoncé’s fashion game has been on point lately, it’s because of celebrity stylist Zerina Akers.

As Beyoncé’s “personal stylist and wardrobe curator,” Zerina is the woman responsible for the looks you see on Bey’s Instagram as well as recent music videos.

Blessings on Blessings! #StyledbyZerinaAkers #Beyonce

A post shared by Zerina Akers (@zerinaakers) on

Look-by-look and client-by-client, Zerina’s continuing to make a name for herself in MAJOR ways.

In an interview with Le Magazine Noir, Zerina keeps it real about how she manages her work ethic, the importance of uplifting Black designers, and her proudest moment.

Check out a few excerpts:

On managing her work ethic: I recently turned 30 and I’ve decided that my 20s were for working hard, my 30s will be about working smart, and I will enjoy it all in my 40s. I don’t have a lot of time so I try to spend it wisely. When I have moments to just be with my people and be in my home, I make sure to cherish it and make it count. For me, now is about investing my time into what I want to create, and who I want  to be. In between pulls or running errands, I’ll try to catch up with my friends and family over the phone and make sure that no matter what they know that I think about them and I love them.

On Black designers: “There is so much talent in the World and often not enough resources for some people to truly express themselves through their craft. I have watched many young designers grow but I have also watched many designers stray away from their dreams. I just try to support them as much as I can because sometimes it’s the most simplest moment that can completely launch someone’s career and completely change their life.”

On working on Beyoncé’s ‘Formation’ hat look: “That was the fist time I realized that I can create work that will OUTLIVE MYSELF. That look was composed of all INDIE designers and became it’s own moment, it’s own image.”

Cynthia Nixon Reveals A Surprising Fact About Her Oldest Child

Cynthia Nixon, who’s running for the governorship of New York, shared a photo of her oldest child, Samuel, who is now, transgender. Nixon shared the news in celebration of Trans Day of Action in the midst of his graduation earlier in the month from the University of Chicago.

She wrote on Instagram that she was “so proud” of her son, Samuel Joseph Mozes, or Seph, who completed his college education earlier in the month. As you may know, Nixon shares 21-year-old Samuel with her ex, Danny Mozes.

Cynthia is also the mother of her 15-year-old son, Charles Ezekiel Mozes. Back in March of this year, the Sex And The City star revealed that she was running for governor of New York, in competition with the current democrat, Andrew Cuomo.

Cynthia said that “we want our government work again,” regarding incarceration, their subway system, and healthcare issues. Previously, Nixon’s former co-stars endorsed her running for the governorship, with the exception of Kim Cattrall.

Kim didn’t say anything bad about Cynthia, she merely gave a blanket statement stating that she was in favor of her co-stars doing whatever they wanted with their career.

As Sex and The City fans know, Kim and the rest of the crew don’t get along anymore, with Kim even outright saying that she’s not friends with any of them. It was one of the primary reasons for the halt of production of future Sex And The City movies.

In other news, Nixon took shots at the Immigration And Customs Enforcement Agency as well as Donald Trump, in the middle of the child migrant crisis.

Cynthia said ICE was a “terrorist organization,” and that Donald Trump was “egomaniacal.” Her comments regarding the president come after Trump signed an executive order to stop the separation of children from their parents at the border.

This News Will Make You Hopeful About the Future of Your Avocado Toast

You know what’s the worst?

When you go to buy avocados and discover them in a pitiful bin, all brown and shriveled together like they took a vow en masse to spoil and ruin your Taco Tuesday plans.

What upsets me more than their dive to the dark side is the fact that they’ll never get used, only discarded in the trash.

What if there were something we could do about the avocado-ripening travesty that constantly plagues us?

Enter the folks over at a startup called Apeel Sciences who are actually doing something about the shelf life of avocados and their produce aisle friends.

For six years, Apeel Sciences has been working to make all of our wildest avocado-preserving dreams a reality.

But truth be told, avocados are only the beginning of this magnificent sorcery.

The company has engineered a plant-based coating that extends the shelf life of produce. The coating is applied to the exterior of produce via dunking or rinsing.

The coating keeps fruits and vegetables fresh for up to three times longer.

It’s like pressing the slo-mo button on your phone, but for ripening produce.

Is Apeel Safe to Eat?

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classified it as GRAS, or generally recognized as safe, which means yes.

The special coating is made out of lipids and glycerolipids, which are found in peels, seeds and pulps of produce, according to Apeel’s website.

It’s not like the wax on apples. Apeel’s coating keeps moisture in and oxygen out instead of using wax or refrigeration to extend life. You won’t be able to taste, smell or see the coating.

Plus, it’s allergen-free, so have no fear, friends.

Apeel avocados are already on the shelves at Costco and Harps Food stores across the Midwest. Just look for the Apeel section, and get ready to wait a week — or three — for your avocados to spoil.

The startup’s CEO, James Rogers, told The Washington Post that customers don’t pay more for the service because grocers save money due to reduced spoilage.

Why We Should All Care About the Shelf Life of Produce

Reducing food waste has become a global concern, but despite our best intentions, food just spoils on its own internal clock.

How many fruits and veggies have gone bad under your watch this year? Too many, I’m sure. Me, too. (Please forgive me, strawberries. If I only had a few more days with you.)

But we’re not alone. An expert we spoke with recently estimates that the average household wastes $ 1,800 every year on food they never eat.

Reducing food waste could create a chain reaction of savings for consumers, retailers, farmers and keep food out of landfills.

In turn, transportation costs, packaging waste, wastewater, fertilizer and food spoilage would all be reduced. That’s huge.

Apeel says it has successfully delayed ripening processes on apples, artichokes, asparagus, bananas, bell peppers, blueberries, cherries, green beans, lemons, mangos, radishes, strawberries and tomatoes.

Avocados could be the first step in what could be a breakthrough in the sustainable future of food.

I just have one more question: Does it work on human skin? Asking for a friend.

Stephanie Bolling is a staff writer at The Penny Hoarder. Today she learned that “alligator pear” is another name for an avocado.

This was originally published on The Penny Hoarder, which helps millions of readers worldwide earn and save money by sharing unique job opportunities, personal stories, freebies and more. The Inc. 5000 ranked The Penny Hoarder as the fastest-growing private media company in the U.S. in 2017.

15 things no one warns you about after childbirth

by

Michelle Stein

posted in Parenting

I devoured the obligatory What to Expect When You’re Expecting, pored through BabyCenter’s resource pages and asked my Ob-gyn about a million questions when I was pregnant with my first child. Since I armed myself with all the knowledge I could get my hands on, I thought I had a decent handle on what to expect.

Wrong.

As it turned out, there were still plenty of surprises after delivery and well into those first few months with my newborn.

Been-there-done-that moms in the BabyCenter Community who are due in February have been sharing their hard-earned wisdom, in a thread titled, “Things they don’t tell you after your first birth.” And basically, this should be required reading for expecting parents. Here’s just a sampling of the gems I found:

1) You might still look pregnant after giving birth. “Unless you have a semi-fanatical workout routine or a plant-based vegan diet planned after baby, (or are genetically lucky) that belly won’t go anywhere.”

2) Contractions continue even after delivery. “The after uterine contractions can hurt worse than labor. Especially if you nurse, AND they get worse with each baby.”

3) Nurses will push on your uterus after delivery. “I didn’t know a nurse will perform fundal checks after delivery. This can be uncomfortable. Basically the nurse will massage your belly. It helps to dispel clots. Also to make sure the uterus is responding after delivery and going back to its normal size.”

4) Postpartum bleeding is, um, intense. “The amount of blood and clots that fall out of your vagina is not something I was prepared for.”

5) C-section recovery = ouch! “No one told me how painful my scar would be after my surgery especially since it was an emergency or that I would have to walk the day after they did it.”

6) Night sweats are no joke. “I would wake up every night drenched in sweat. So much so I would have to change my pajamas. It lasted for a couple of weeks!”

7) The baby blues are real. “Be prepared for tears. I cried at everything. It’s normal.”

8) With that said, it could be something more. “Know the signs of postpartum depression and seek help right away if you think you may have it, or if someone else thin(k)s you do.”

9) Babies cry. A lot. And it’s totally normal. “A baby that sleeps through the night is a rarity not the norm, so all those older ladies that seem to remember their baby sleeping through by 2 months are lying.”

10) Breastfeeding might hurt in the beginning. “I didn’t know how painful nursing would be at first. It was like scraping glass around my nipples. So many tears from me and DD.”

11) Be prepared for leakage. “Your boobs will leak whenever you hear any baby cry. So if you get to go to the store without your baby, still put nursing pads on!”

12) Speaking of leakage … “Jumping will make you pee involuntarily.”

13) Sometimes, baby just wants to hang out in the middle of the night. “Night times feeds will not always end in baby going back to sleep. My daughter would eat and have a clean diaper and when it was all said and done she would be still looking in my face wide-eyed like ‘mommy where da party at?'”

14) Your baby might loathe her car seat And it really sucks. “Driving a screaming baby around to get him or her to sleep when they HATE their car seat is a nightmare. My DD (dear daughter) screamed for a year every time we went anywhere because she hated her car seat.”

15) When are you having another? “Once your child turns one, every person will be hounding you about having baby number two.”

Ah, this list takes me back. It’s funny how much of the unpleasant postpartum stuff I “forget” after each kid, even though my youngest is only 18 months old. I remember being totally overwhelmed by my bleeding, leaking body at first. And my first child (and third, actually) hated the car seat with a burning passion. Even after my second birth, the post-delivery contractions threw me for a loop. Because apparently these tend to worsen with each pregnancy. Who knew?

Expecting couples can certainly read about the mechanics of all this stuff in books and online; but, in my experience, testimonies often paint a more realistic picture of what they’re in for. So share this list far and wide. Because parents-to-be deserve fair warning.

What do you think of this list? What would you add?

When consumers don’t want to talk about what they bought

One of the joys of shopping for many people is the opportunity to brag about their purchases to friends and others. But new research found one common situation in which people would rather not discuss what they just bought: when they’re feeling like money is a little tight. In a series of studies, researchers found that consumers who felt financially constrained didn’t want to talk about their purchases, large or small, with friends or strangers.

9 Questions You Have About ‘Hereditary’ But Are Too Afraid To Ask

If you’ve been to see Hereditary, you may well be reading this in a darkened room, shaking and rocking back and forth. But as well as being one of the most truly chilling horror movies of the modern era, it’s also one of the most nuanced, with clues, hidden meanings and Easter Eggs, scattered all across its two-hour plus running time. Here we delve into the things you might have missed, or indeed, things you might have spotted, but didn’t quite understand. No need to thank us.

Oh, and you should really know, SPOILERS follow. Like blood flowing from a severed head…

Is the Demon Real?

Paimon isn’t a creation of director Ari Aster. Whether he’s real or not is still TBD but he is an actual documented demon dating way back, with appearances in the 17th century spell book Lesser Key Of Solomon and the French occultist Collin de Plancy’s 1818 tome Dictionnaire Infernal. Aster says he chose Paimon because “the devil has been done to death” and Paimon was his favourite option that came up during his research prior to making the film.

He’s certainly got some sick powers: making spirits appear, reanimating the dead, holding his breath indefinitely underwater. Sometimes he takes the name of Paimonia, sometimes Paymon, sometimes he isn’t a ‘he’ at all – American occultist Poke Runyon has suggested Paimon is a woman. Most agree that he/she rides a camel. Whatever you want to call the movie’s Big Evil, we can agree that, disturbing as it was, the final scene of the movie was missing something, and what it was missing was a camel.

Where Have I Seen the Treehouse Scene Before?

Hereditary
Seem familiar?

If you found the last scene in the treehouse familiar, good spot. The director says it’s a homage of sorts to the seminal 1955 Charles Laughton directed movie Night Of The Hunter. Based on the 1953 novel by Davis Grubb, the book, and the subsequent film, are inspired by the crimes of Harry Powers, who murdered two widows and three children, and was hanged at Moundsville State Penitentiary in West Virginia in 1932.

It’s widely viewed as the greatest movie that isn’t Citizen Kane. Legendary French film magazine Cahiers du Cinéma even says as much (but in French obviously). If you’ve never seen it, Night Of The Hunter is a brilliant example of a non-horror film being very good at being horrifying.

Isn’t There a Chilling Hint of What’s To Come Early On?

Hereditary
Look closely at that necklace.

If you knew what you were looking for, you could have roughly worked out where Hereditary was going within the first ten minutes. That necklace Annie (Toni Collette) is wearing, as she delivers her awkward eulogy at the lectern in the funeral parlour? The one with the same design as the one her mother Ellen is wearing, laying in her coffin? Well, that’s the actual seal of Paimon. Yeah, I know it looks like a gate, but it’s actually a scary demon symbol, okay? The symbol turns up throughout the film, until the moment of the final reveal; the most chilling example being etched onto the side of the telephone pole that will later that evening take Charlie‘s head.

Would Knowing Hebrew Have Helped Me Decipher What Was Going On?

Hereditary
Charlie doesn't just express herself on the pages of a sketch book.

Yes. One of the biggest questions that Hereditary poses is why are Annie and husband Steve (Gabriel Byrne) so chill with letting their daughter Charlie (Milly Shapiro) write on the walls of their house? Again, if you knew what you were looking for, you could have sussed much of what Hereditary was doing right from the off — though knowing Hebrew would have been handy in interpreting what the words mean. Especially since it’s never explained.

‘Satony’ is a word used in the ritual of necromancy. ‘Zazas’ is a word used to summon a demon – it’s actually used in the season six X-Files episode “Terms Of Endearment” (it’s got horror god Bruce Campbell in it!) in a similar context to here.

‘Liftoach’, meanwhile, is Hebrew for ‘open’, and ‘pandemonium’ is the word for Hell’s capital in Paradise Lost, the iconic poem by the 17th century English poet, John Milton. The clues were there all along, Annie!

Did I Notice Some Spooky Echoes?

Hereditary
It's not right but it's OK — it's already dead.

Here’s some creepy stuff you might have missed. The smiling naked man that Peter (Alex Wolff) sees in the doorway at the back end of the film is the same man who was smiling at Peter at his grandmother’s funeral at the front end of the film.

The chocolate bar that Charlie is eating in the scene where she’s snipping off the dead bird’s head is a Dove chocolate bar.

In the scene where Annie is drinking tea at Joan’s (Ann Dowd) house, and pulls a herb out of her mouth after taking a sip of tea – well, there’s a picture in the photo album of Ellen feeding Charlie with a bottle, and the milk is peppered with the same type of herbs.

Oh, and in the first scene where we see Peter at school, the words ‘Escaping Fate’ are daubed on the blackboard in the classroom. That would be ominous enough, given what is to follow, but it’s also a nod to John Carpenter’s seminal 1978’s slasher Halloween. The concept of fate – and of not being able to escape it — is also discussed in that movie’s classroom scene.

What’s Up with Annie’s Sleepwalking?

Hereditary
Somnambulist Annie may try to set her children on fire — but it's for the right reasons.

Annie spends the whole film trying to protect her children… except when she’s asleep? Could it actually be that she was trying to do the loving thing, protecting her children by doing the unthinkable? Woah, that’s messed up.

Director Ari Aster told Reddit last week, “Annie knows on some buried, suppressed level that her life is not her own, and she is the victim of unthinkable, Machiavellian scheming by her mother, but she lives in a kind of denial. But in her sleep, this part of her is acting out. She tried to set fire to her children [to stop the eventual ritual being able to take place]. She even says, in the dream sequence, “I wasn’t trying to kill you, I was trying to save you.”

There’s More to the Miniature House than Meets the Eye, Right?

Hereditary
Hereditary makes use of the spooky dollhouse trope.

You can probably read the significance of the miniature house that kicks off the movie, and is present throughout, as being a plaything – and the family within it – of the demon Paimon. But Aster says that there is significance to the way the model house is laid out. If you look closely, he says, the window to the attic, where Ellen’s decapitated body is found, is boarded up, as is the bedroom of Charlie. Not only that, but the front door is akin to that of a bank safe. No escape <shudder>.

So Just How Many People Were Vessels for Paimon?

It’s pretty clear that Peter wasn’t the first vessel for Paimon. We hear that Ellen “always wanted Charlie to be a boy” (Paimon needing a male body to inhabit) and it’s revealed that Joan — who at the end of the film talks of the treehouse ritual being a second attempt — even made a ‘Welcome’ mat for someone named Charles.

But even before that, we get the impression that there have been other attempts at implanting Paimon into a human body. Annie tells the grief counselling session that her brother killed himself as a result of his schizophrenia, believing that his mother was “trying to put people inside him”. And what of Joan’s dead son and grandson? Were they just a device to win the trust of Annie, or were they the victims of other prior attempts?

Was the Production Haunted?

hereditary dollhouse
Haunting.

Here’s a pretty cool story. On set, Alex Wolff told Ari Aster about the age-old superstition that the Shakespeare play Macbeth is cursed. If you’re not aware of said superstition, actors in the play won’t refer to the play by its actual name while in the theatre, using the euphemism ‘The Scottish Play’ instead. Also, rehearsing lines from the Witches’ incantations is a definite no. If any of these rules are transgressed, the curse can be broken by the person to blame leaving the theatre, spinning around three times, spitting, cursing, and then knocking to get back in, all of which sounds extremely silly to us. According to the director though, upon hearing this, he smugly said the word ‘Macbeth’ out loud… and, during the filming of the next scene, one of the lights burst.

Hereditary is out now.

5 Things Millennials Care About When Renting

Millennials have saturated the rental market, making up roughly 40% of it—becoming the largest group of renters in any other generation in the United States.

Millennials are vastly different from the previous generations, and, as a landlord, not considering these differences when trying to fill your property can hurt your chances of renting to them.

In this post, we’ll help you land more millennial tenants by exploring five ways you can cater to their needs and wants as a landlord.

1. Apartments that Allow Pets

It’s no secret that millennials are having kids later than the generations before. But what you may not have known is that 44% of millennials consider caring for a pet as practice for caring for their future children.

In fact, a whopping 35% of pets are owned by millennials, surpassing the percentage of pets owned by individuals in other generations.

By extension, catering to this trend and making your property pet-friendly could increase your chances of renting to a millennial—yet many landlords don’t because of the potential risk of damage. In reality, many pet owners have a hard time finding apartments that allow pets.

You can lower your risk by including a pet deposit or fee in your Residential Rental Lease. This deposit or fee can then be used if any damages occur as a result of the tenant’s pet.

With a deposit or fee and a pet-friendly property, you can feel protected while still being accommodating to the needs of tenants with pets.

2. Residential Complexes that Consider Environmental Friendliness

Millennials care about sustainability and are even willing to pay more for items that consider environmentalism, such as corporations that use less or environmentally-friendly packaging.

A millennial’s desire to only support corporations that match their sustainability beliefs is so strong that 45% of millennials are willing to switch the brand they normally buy to a brand that is committed to environmentalism.

For landlords, going green is a great way to stand out from your competitors, and there are plenty of ways you can do so, such as:

  • Being mindful of the ingredients in the cleaners or pesticides you use: there are many biodegradable or chemical-free cleaners you can choose from to maintain your property.
  • Using different lightbulbs: eco-friendly lightbulbs are often more efficient and last longer than traditional incandescent ones.
  • Investing in solar energy: though costly to install, if you can add solar panels to your property, your long-term return on investment is worth it. In the interim, adding solar panels could earn you some money through the Federal Business Energy Investment Tax Credit.

Other ways you can make your property more sustainable includes replacing traditional showerheads, toilets, and faucets with water-efficient alternatives, going paperless, and/or adding more recycling bins.

You’ll likely find that by making your building more environmentally friendly, you are not only enticing new tenants with your responsible sustainability practices but you are saving money and the environment.

3. Communicating with Their Landlord Online or Through Text

Convenience is key, and most tenants do not want to play phone tag with their landlord just to inform them of something like a minor repair. This trend is becoming popular, and lots of rentals are moving basic services (like where tenants make maintenance requests or complaints) online.

Keep in mind, though using email or text is better for you or your tenant for simple conversations, you still have to consider the legal regulations in place when it comes to communicating with your tenant.

For instance, it may be okay to text your tenant and tell them that maintenance is done making a repair in their apartment or for your tenant to text you permission to enter their property, but it is typically not okay for you to text your Notice to Enter (the document you need to provide in order to legally enter your tenant’s unit) in order to make the repair.

4. Accessible Payment Options

While a handful of renters may not think twice about the form of payment your rental property accepts, to some, accessible payment options are a must-have.

For example, how many times have you seen a millennial write a check? Probably not often since over one-fifth of millennials have never done so. What’s more, 6 in 10 millennials don’t own a credit card.

So, before you set your payment options as check or credit only, which some landlords do, look at the popularity of other forms of payments, namely mobile and electronic payments.

Adding payment options can come at a cost to you, so do your research and make a decision that works for your situation—preferably one that doesn’t inflate your overhead budget.

5. Proximity to Important Places Like Banks, Grocery Stores, and Bus Stops

Many of us care about being close to important places and like to have the option of busing to work or walking to the grocery store instead of getting in our car. Millennials, however, buy fewer cars than other generations, which makes proximity integral to choosing a rental home for this generation.

One downfall is that the neighborhood surrounding your rental is sometimes not under your control as a landlord. However, if your property is close to a bank or a grocery store, it may be worthwhile to see how long it takes to walk there and include that information in your advertisement.

Advertising Your Rental

With the vast majority of renters being millennials, it’s a good idea to make your property more desirable to individuals in this group.

Allowing pets, considering your environmental impact, and making communication and payments more accessible are just some of the ways you can market your property to millennials.

Be sure to do your own research about your property and the surrounding area to make sure marketing to millennials works for you.

Do you know of other ways you can advertise your rental property to millennials? Let us know in the comments!

What Trump Could Learn From Freud’s Daughter About Parentless Kids

Seventy-five years ago in the midst of World War II, Anna Freud, the daughter of Sigmund Freud, and her close friend, Dorothy Burlingham, published their classic study, War and Children, documenting the impact that separating children from their parents had during a time when England was under attack from Nazi Germany.

Freud and Burlingham knew their subject firsthand. They had been directing the Hampstead War Nurseries, which provided children, many of whom had lost their homes to German bombs, with residential care and comparative safety.

Today, thanks to the Trump administration’s policy of criminally prosecuting asylum-seeking adult immigrants who do not cross into the United States legally and separating them from their children, Freud and Burlingham’s study of children in crisis has become relevant in ways its authors never could have imagined in 1943.

10 funny and totally universal truths about family vacations

by

Carolyn Robertson

posted in Parenting

We recently returned from a family vacation, a trip overseas to visit family that we’ve been planning for years. Everything went remarkably well: sunburns were kept to a minimum and no children were forgotten at the airport. Gold star for us!

Of course, we were back for all of three days before my daughter mentioned mournfully that her friend’s family went to the water slides while we were away. I never get to go to the water slides. Rather than point out the fact that we just took her to the freaking EIFFEL TOWER, I went downstairs to bury myself in the mountain of holiday laundry that is still waiting to be washed.

As wonderful as family vacations are, there are certain truths about traveling with your kids that cannot be denied. Here are 10 of the biggest ones, courtesy of some of my favorite funny parents on Twitter.

1. Your kids’ sleep routines will be out the window

2. You’ll realize that some things never change

3. Your picky eater will still be a picky eater

4. Your 5-day road trip will require a U-Haul

5. You will never hear the end of it if there’s no pool

6. You won’t be the only parent losing her sh** at the beach

7. Your kids will always like the subway best

8. You will clean up SO MANY SPILLS

9. You’ll gain a newfound appreciation for your day job

Jimmy Kimmel Exposes Trump For Lying About His Cruel Child Separation Border Policy

Randy Holmes/ABC

The first thing many Americans woke up to this morning was—surprise!—a ridiculous tweet from President Donald Trump:

Yes, the president gave an “unannounced” interview to his favorite television program, Fox & Friends, which these days is tantamount to State TV. (Also, while it may be one of the highest-rated cable morning shows, its ratings don’t come close to the popular morning shows on ABC, NBC and CBS).

And, as host Jimmy Kimmel noted on his late-night program, “Donald Trump had a lot of praise for himself in this interview—and Kim Jong Un.”

Ridiculous Myths About Feminists

Men can be feminists, too! Sometimes, the need for the term “feminist” seems silly because, we should all just innately be feminists. Being feminists just means wanting men and women to be treated equally, and that desire should be natural among all humans. To be human should mean to be feminist so, no, we aren’t all women.

Nick Jonas ‘serious’ about Priyanka Chopra romance

OHMYGOSSIP — Nick Jonas is “serious” about his reported romance with Priyanka Chopra.
The 25-year-old singer has been rumoured to be dating the ‘Quantico’ star for several weeks, and after it was claimed Nick took Priyanka to his cousin’s wedding last week, sources now say the new couple are head over heels for one another.
A source told People magazine: “It’s a huge deal that Nick brought Priyanka to his cousin’s wedding. He’s dated a lot over the last couple years but it’s never been anything serious, so this is a big step.
“Nick and Priyanka really like each other, and his family enjoyed getting to know her as well. She fit right in!”
The new couple were spotted jetting into JKF airport last week and then headed to New Jersey for the wedding, which was also attended by Nick’s brother Kevin Jonas, his wife Danielle and many of their extended family.
Priyanka, 35, was seen mingling and laughing with the ‘Jealous’ hitmaker’s family throughout the long weekend.
The pair then added more fuel to the dating rumours after they were spotted heading out for a dinner date in New York City at Park Avenue Summer.
A source said: “They were very affectionate with each other and seemed to not care who saw. Priyanka ran her hands through his hair at one point and they were laughing and even dancing to the music.
“[They] seemed really into each other. They were very cute.”
Priyanka and Nick had previously set tongues wagging when they spent Memorial Day weekend together.
A source said at the time: “Priyanka and Nick were talking really closely and were very smiley and very happy. They weren’t trying to be private as they were in a pretty public place, but they were talking to people around them, sitting closely and they both just seemed super happy.”
And, although an onlooker claimed that the couple were very careful when it came to a public display of affection, it’s believed they are now a proper item.
The source explained: “They are dating and it’s brand-new. It’s a good match and they are both interested in each other.”

Dennis Rodman Breaks Down Weeping in Insane Interview About Kim Jong Un

CNN

When CNN needed to find a voice to react to the historic meeting between North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un and President Donald Trump, its bookers turned to one man who knew both leaders personally: Dennis Rodman.

In a bizarre, emotional interview on CNN on Monday, the mercurial former NBA star broke down in tears while praising the meeting between the two leaders. He also noted his own tumultuous history with North Korea.

Sporting a red Make America Great Again hat, large tinted sunglasses, and a T-shirt plugging the cryptocurrency potcoin.com, Rodman recalled how he was chastised for personally befriending Kim during several trips to the hermit kingdom. Rodman had been widely criticized for showering attention and publicity on Kim during those trip. But he claimed he did not know anything about the North Korean regime or its atrocities before he agreed to travel there.

Nurse Alice: What Women Need to Know About Their OB-GYN Appointments

Another lawsuit against a doctor accused of sexual misconduct? Does it ever end?

Six women and former college students at the University of Southern California have filed lawsuits against OB-GYN doctor George Tyndall, who has had numerous complaints of sexual misconduct over the years. Even the doctor’s staff complained about his behavior. What’s even more tragic is that the school was aware of the complaints and did nothing until he was finally removed from his 30-year tenure just last year.

In light of this and all the other sexually inappropriate things happening in society today, what’s a young woman to do?

For many young women away at college, going to your first gynecological appointment without the help or advice of your mother, grandmother, or some other female support person can be scary, awkward, and even overwhelming. Although a woman’s first OB-GYN visit is recommended to occur between the ages of 13 to 15 or when they first become sexually active, it doesn’t usually happen that way. Let’s face it, many young women go to a pediatrician throughout their late adolescence, and probably not even on a regular basis if they’re otherwise healthy.

Many times, a woman goes to her first gynecological appointment after she has concerns: e.g., heavy or irregular menstruation, concerns about sexually transmitted infections, exploring birth control options, or because they suspect pregnancy. Nevertheless, this is a very important first appointment that includes a general overall health exam and questioning about general health and lifestyle, and then one more focused on the health of your sexual and reproductive organs and system.

Empower yourself with knowing what to expect. Here are eight important things women should know when having their first gynecological appointment.

  1. Familiarize yourself with what to expect. The medical office and provider should instruct you on what to anticipate before you step one foot into the exam room. Examinations should be performed with only the necessary amount of physical contact required to obtain data for diagnosis and treatment. And an appropriate explanation should accompany all examination procedures.
  2. Having a female chaperone present is standard of care unless you decline the offer. But the key here is that you were offered one, regardless of the gender of the provider. You should be allowed to undress and put on a patient gown in privacy. Never dress or undress in front of your doctor.
  3. The doctor should be explaining and educating you throughout the exam so you know what’s happening and why before it happens. The physician-patient relationship can be damaged when this does not occur, and leaves room for misinterpretation of touching during the exam.
  4. Health professionals are expected to wash their hands and put on gloves when doing any invasive exams or procedures and that involve touching bodily fluids. A doctor should never be doing a pelvic or rectal exam on you without gloves.
  5. Both health providers and patients should avoid sexual innuendo and provocative remarks. Sexually offensive or suggestive language or jokes should be avoided. Keep things professional.
  6. If you feel uncomfortable at any time during the exam, you can stop the exam immediately and tell the doctor you don’t feel comfortable. This also allows the opportunity for the provider to clarify what’s happening should it truly be a misunderstanding.
  7. If you believe there was any misconduct or you feel violated, please notify the medical administrator immediately while the occurrence is still fresh in your mind. This helps you to retell an accurate story and intervene to prevent any potential further misconduct from happening to someone else.
  8. Physicians and medical administration aware of instances of sexual misconduct on the part of any health professional have an obligation to protect the safety of the public by removing said person from patient care immediately and reporting such situations to appropriate authorities, such as institutional committee chairs, department chairs, peer review organizations, supervisors, or the medical board. You can report this as well. And if you do, always do it in writing.

Chrissy Teigen just raised a VERY important question about The Little Mermaid on Twitter, and the movie will never be the same again

Chrissy Teigen just raised a VERY important question about <em>The Little Mermaid</em> on Twitter, and the movie will never be the same again

We’re pleased to report that Chrissy Teigen has broken the internet yet again. Thanks to her humor, frankness, and penchant for Twitter rants, Teigen is of our favorite people to follow on social media. Remember when she live-tweeted her disastrous experience flying to Tokyo? Or her savage tweets about Jesus Christ Superstar Live? Well, Teigen’s latest Twitter rant — which happens to be about The Little Mermaid — might be our favorite one yet.

On Sunday, June 10th, the supermodel and cookbook author took to Twitter to raise a VERY important question: “How does Ariel know what ‘reprimand’ means but not ‘feet?’” And now, we don’t think we’ll ever see The Little Mermaid the same way again.

Teigen is, of course, referring to lyrics from the song “Part of Your World.” While wondering about life above the water, Ariel sings, “Bet’cha on land, they understand / Bet they don’t reprimand their daughters.”

We always knew that Ariel didn’t know the words for a lot of objects on land. At various points during The Little Mermaid, she doesn’t know the word for a fork or a pipe, opting instead to call them a “dinglehopper” and a “snarfblat,” respectively. But Teigen pointing out that Ariel DOES know such a big word (you know, relatively speaking) like “reprimand” makes us see the movie in a new way.

We don’t know what prompted Teigen’s Twitter rant about The Little Mermaid — maybe she was watching the movie at home with Luna and Miles? But however she arrived at this thought, we’re grateful that she shared it with us.

Can’t argue with this logic.

In the end, Teigen decided that maybe Ariel just isn’t the brightest Disney princess of the bunch.

After all, the mermaid has lived a pretty sheltered life.

Oh, Chrissy. Never stop tweeting your trains of thought, okay?

Former FCC Chairman Claims Ajit Pai Lied About DDoS Attack on Net Neutrality Forum

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai lied when he claimed a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack brought down the agency’s comments system in 2014, his predecessor says.

It’s the latest salvo in the controversy over why the FCC’s public comment forum crashed in the middle of the debate over net neutrality rules last year. Pai claimed it was attacked by hackers who deliberately overloaded the servers (a DDoS attack). He doubled down on his claim by saying that the FCC was the victim of a similar attack the last time net neutrality was considered in 2014. And, Pai claimed, the FCC covered it up.

Supporters of net neutrality rules, which Pai opposes, say the FCC is not coming clean about the real reason behind the crash. They argue it was likely a flood of comments supporting net neutrality, or even a simply technical glitch, that brought down the FCC system.

Earlier this week, former FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler said Pai’s statements about 2014 FCC site outage were false, Ars Technica reported. No attack was officially reported and there’s a good reason for that, according to Wheeler.

“FCC officials who were there at the time said it didn’t happen,” Wheeler said during a taping of the C-SPAN show, The Communicators, according to Axios. He added, “The independent IT contractors that were hired said it didn’t happen. So if it didn’t happen, it’s hard to have a coverup for something that didn’t happen.”

Adding fuel to the fire was a report from Gizmodo on Tuesday that internal emails confirmed that the FCC did not tell the truth about any alleged DDoS attack. The emails show that FCC officials made false claims of an attack to explain the problems with the comment system.

Since Wheeler’s allegation on Wednesday, the FCC has refused to take questions from reporters, and has prevented the release of records related to the issue through FOIA requests, citing the Trade Secrets Act.

Melania Trump Rebuts Rudy Giuliani’s Comment That ‘She Believes Husband’ About Affair with Stormy Daniels

Rudy Giuliani shared his thoughts about Donald Trump‘s alleged affair with Stormy Daniels — and first lady Melania put Giuliani in his place.

At an event in Tel Aviv on Wednesday, Giuliani, an attorney for the president, insinuated that Melania didn’t believe that the president had an affair with Daniels. “She believes her husband, and she knows it’s untrue,” Giuliani said.

Following Giuliani’s remarks, Stephanie Grisham, a White House rep for Mrs. Trump and East Wing communications director, released a statement to PEOPLE on Thursday: “I don’t believe Mrs. Trump has ever discussed her thoughts on anything with Mr. Giuliani.”

Though Melania, herself, has yet to publicly address the reports of Donald’s alleged extramarital occurrences with porn star Daniels, Grisham’s rebuke suggests that Giuliani does not directly communicate with Melania.

In January, Daniels claimed she had an affair with Trump in 2006 and was paid $ 130,000 by Trump and his longtime lawyer Michael Cohen.

Although Trump and the White House has denied the affair, a source close to Melania previously told PEOPLE that the first lady is “furious” over the nonstop controversies engulfing the White House and her husband’s presidency.

“What’s happening is exactly what she didn’t want to happen,” the source said. “They’ve literally become like the Kardashians: scandals, divorces, headlines.”

The statement from Mrs. Trump’s office comes a day after her husband addressed the media during her first public appearance in 27 days after she was last seen in public on May 10, just four days before undergoing a kidney procedure.

RELATED: Melania Trump Wanted Mike Pence as VP Because — Unlike Her Husband — Pence Had No ‘Skeletons’

During a briefing on hurricane preparedness at FEMA Headquarters in Washington, D.C., the commander-in-chief defended his wife against the “vicious” media who had previously speculated that she had disappeared because she had plastic surgery, or because she was planning to divorce her husband, or because she was hiding spousal abuse.

Meanwhile, Melania was not the only one who Giuliani went after in Tel Aviv.

The former mayor of New York City was blasted as a “misogynist” and an “absolute pig” for his attempt to discredit Daniels after he said he doesn’t “respect” the adult film actress because she is a porn star who “sells her body for sexual exploitation.”

RELATED: Stormy Daniels Says She Felt Threatened to Keep Quiet About Alleged Trump Affair: ‘I Was Rattled’

“I respect all human beings. I even have to respect criminals. But I’m sorry, I don’t respect a porn star the way I respect a career women or a women of substance or a woman who has great respect for herself as a women and as a person and isn’t going to sell her body for sexual exploitation,” Giuliani said.

On Wednesday, Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, filed another lawsuit alleging that her former lawyer Keith Davidson colluded with Trump attorney Michael Cohen to cover up her alleged affair with the president.

Balmain’s Olivier Rousteing Talks Diversity and the Upcoming Documentary About His Life Story

ON CAMERA: With a film on the life of veteran couturier Pierre Cardin under way, a documentary on the story of one of Paris’ glitziest fashion prodigies — Balmain’s Olivier Rousteing — is also nearing completion.
The designer told WWD that the film, which is being produced by the team behind the 2009 documentary “Valentino: Last Emperor,” will wrap this summer and is due for release in early 2019, with the distribution channels yet to be confirmed.
The film mixes the personal and the professional, from his roots and growing up with his adoptive parents in Bordeaux, France, to his designer success story, including “some of the struggles encountered in getting to where I am, the work that has gone into it and the critiques,” he said.
“It’s going to be a beautiful message, it’s going to be a big thing,” added Rousteing, acknowledging that the project is an unusual move considering his young age. “A documentary about my life when I’m only in my 30s, it’s a bit like when I had to do the collaboration with H&M based on Balmain’s DNA when I’d only been at the house for like four and a half years. I’ve been at Balmain for eight years now,

Knowing This Secret About the ACT and SAT Can Save You Money and Stress

If you’ve taken the SAT or ACT before, you know the insta-anxiety induced by the essay portion that comes at the end of the test — and if you haven’t, you’re probably not looking forward to it.

But there’s good news for anyone who’s absolutely dreading test day for that very reason: It will probably be fine if you don’t even sign up for the essay portion, (which will save you money, too).

The Essay Portion of the SAT Doesn’t Really Matter

It’s true.

Most colleges and universities don’t care about your score on the essay portion of the SAT and ACT — or whether you’ve even taken that part of the test at all.

Last week, Yale University notified counselors who work with high school students that it will no longer require applicants to have completed the SAT or ACT essay sections.

Yale is the most recent university to make this decision.

Cornell and Columbia universities and the University of Pennsylvania also have said they will no longer rely on the essay portion of these standardized tests, either.

A few months ago, Harvard University announced the same decision, saying that while writing is still an incredibly important skill when it comes to considerations for college admissions, the SAT essay is a poor representation of an applicant’s mastery of the craft. The school will instead turn to an applicant’s admissions essay.

But it’s not just the Ivy Leaguers who don’t want to bother with your SAT or ACT essay score. The University of San Diego recently announced the same, and schools including the University of Florida and the University of Tennessee consider the essay portion of these tests optional.

The Princeton Review, which offers test prep, admissions advice and tutoring services, notes that “While over 70 percent of students taking the SAT and more than 50 percent taking the ACT opt in to the essay, not even 2 percent of colleges require an essay score.”

Save Money, Skip the Essay Portion of the SAT and ACT

The Princeton Review in June 2018 identified just 25 institutions that require scores from the essay portion of the SAT or ACT.

If your school of choice isn’t on that list, you’re probably safe to skip it.

And while you didn’t think the news could get any better than getting out of a 45- to 50-minute stretch of writing an essay by hand, the bonus is that you’ll actually save money, too.

For the 2018-2019 year, the fee to take the SAT with the essay portion is $ 64.50. The fee to take the SAT without the essay portion is $ 47.50.

The fee to take the ACT with the essay writing portion is $ 62.50, while the fee to take the ACT without the essay writing portion is $ 46.00. (If you’ve already signed up to take the ACT with the essay portion, you may be able to get a refund with a written request.)

Unfortunately, if your school of choice is on the list of schools that still require and care about a standardized test essay score, you’ll still want to sign up to take the essay portion of those tests.

Thinking about study abroad?

If you currently feel like you’re in a rut, with no idea where you want to go with your life or what you want to do – don’t worry, because a lot of people are in your situation! After all, adulting is pretty darn daunting. What may be making your rut even worse is the fact that you live in the same town you were born in and grew up in, or even just in the same country. It gets pretty monotonous after a while. What you might need is to simply pack up your bags, gather all of your belongings together, and set up shop in a brand new country. Need some more motivation to do so? We’ve got it right here…

Making a difference

For many people, the idea of living abroad is something they dream about for many years. They envision days on the beach, sweltering heat, making new friends, embracing a new culture, and living the best life they can possibly live. Yet, it seems as though these ideas don’t have to be all in your head – as new research has noted that moving abroad and living in a new country will allow you to have a better sense of self. Indeed, this new research undertaken by Rice University with the help of Columbia University and UNC has found that setting up your life in a new country can increase your sense of “self-concept clarity.”

The study itself

Yet, how did these researchers manage to come to that conclusion? Well, these experts conducted a whopping six studies to come to their conclusion and investigated the lives of 1,874 people from America and those in international MBA programs. This way, they were able to test the differences between those who lived in their home country, and those who live abroad. This idea is also backed up by the famous German philosopher, Hermann von Keyserling.

What they discovered

As they went about their investigations, the research teams discovered that those who lived abroad had been able to think about new. By reflecting on themselves and the difference between their old and new lives, those who lived abroad were able to think about what makes them who they are, and how they are different to others. From this, they were able to identify the idea that living in a different country affects how a person thinks about themselves as a whole and increases the clarity of these thoughts. Yet, this wasn’t all that they discovered. The research teams also found that those who lived abroad could also experience a more satisfactory lifestyle that would often increase happiness, decrease stress, or help them find the perfect career to lead the perfect life.

Considering all of the information this study has unveiled, it’s fair to say that we’ve already packed our bags and have booked our one-way flight to the country of our dreams. What are you waiting for?

Ezinma mixes hip-hop and classical music to send a bold message about blackness

Ezinma mixes hip-hop and classical music to send a bold message about blackness

Ezinma mixes hip-hop and classical music to send a bold message about blackness

The hype of Beyoncé’s 2018 Coachella performance was palpable even as I watched via grainy cell phone video. Millions of eyes fell on Queen Bey that night — but as the opening medley dipped into a poignant place with Beyoncé crooning the Black National Anthem “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” her musicians stole my focus. Eight string players framed her center stage. And they were all women of color.

As most of Bey’s army burst into fiery, marching band-inspired choreography, the string players maintained steady bow strokes and graceful swaying, anchoring the poignant hymn’s emotional core. One of the violinists that night was Ezinma: situated front-right, she stared boldly ahead as Beyoncé held a long note, thrusting her bow overhead like a torch. She told me earlier that the fact that she played among fellow musicians of color — when she herself did not meet any black string players until age 13 — was not lost on her.

“Up until then, I had never seen anyone who looks like me playing the violin,” she said of a pivotal summer music camp. “I didn’t realize how bizarre it was to not see anyone who looks like you when you’re doing something that you love so much.”

Like many New York City-based musicians, Ezinma’s art took her underground — literally. The first time I browsed her YouTube videos and found one shot on the W train, I gasped. As a former New Yorker, my initial question was, “How did she find an empty subway car?” Quickly, my focus veered elsewhere. Standing in the middle of the car, Ezinma (pronounced Eh-ZEE-ma) balanced as the train sped out of Canal Street station. The stunning violinist took four steps forward, gazed into the lens with a piercing swagger, and brought her instrument to her chin. Against a hypnotic beat, she performed a cover of Post Malone’s hip-hop banger “Rockstar.” It’s a surprising twist to hear the lyrics “I’ve been fuckin’ hoes and poppin’ pillies / Man, I feel just like a rockstar” replaced by Ezinma’s honeyed violin lines. As the song built, she seethed with a quiet, simmering energy. The butterscotch coils gathered atop her crown bounced with her movement; her painted fingernails flew across the strings. However, perhaps the most striking thing about Ezinma is her sound.

There’s a confidence to the violinist, producer, and composer’s performances that took root early on. “You don’t see a lot of little black girls playing the violin,” she told me. She spoke on a bus on the way back to Coachella for its second weekend, her voice low yet warm over the phone. “I think a part of me always felt a little bit detached, or as if I didn’t quite fit in.” Ezinma began violin at age four. Like me, she learned via the Suzuki Method, an international music curriculum designed with young children in mind. “I loved that I would put in the work and see results,” she recalled. Her biracial heritage exposed her to an eclectic world, like mine did. Growing up, cultural aspects from either side of my bloodline mingled as one; I didn’t realize for years that it was unnatural for Filipino lumpia to share a plate with Scandinavian kringle and sarmice, Serbian cabbage rolls. Born in Lincoln, Nebraska to professor parents — a black Guyanese father and a German-American mother — Ezinma cultivated passions for seemingly disparate music types. She played in school and youth orchestras and competed in junior classical competitions. But she also entered bluegrass fiddling contests. Her father, a big music fan, immersed her in funk, reggae, jazz, and Caribbean soca. Elsewhere, she soaked up hip-hop and trap, taking to artists like A$ AP Ferg and Beyoncé.

I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, where being mixed-race is far from rare. For Ezinma, where the only other Guyanese person she knew just happened to live next door, things were different. “Especially being from Nebraska, I didn’t encounter very many non-white or non-Asian violinists until I was a teenager,” she told me. Ezinma said she often felt the need to defend her blackness. Some people — both black and white — were perplexed by her presence in an orchestra. There was a sense that this wasn’t “what black people do.”

One middle school experience was a pivotal lightbulb moment. As in most orchestras, one’s chair placement is important; stronger players sit closer to the conductor. After discovering that her teacher made her third chair, Ezinma was confused. “I went home and I was like, ‘Dad, I know I’m better than them,’” she said. Her father’s response opened her eyes: “People are not going to see you for what your talent is. People are going to see you for the way that you look…Because of that, you have to work so much harder than everyone else.” This convinced her to dispute her position. Discovering that her orchestra had a system for contesting such placements — à la the college marching band movie Drumline — she challenged the second chair to a blind test. They recorded themselves playing the same piece on cassette tapes. After, their peers judged and voted. “I won unanimously,” Ezinma said. She added that the process was positive; the girl she surpassed is still a friend. From there, she also challenged and won the first chair.

“I learned there is so much discrimination in ways that I wasn’t aware of as a kid. I was pretty naïve,” she said.

This assertive spirit drives much of Ezinma’s music-making today. At its core is a bold expression of her identity. There’s also a sense of declaring her right to create the music she wants — which, at first, is not quite what it seems. A closer listen to Ezinma’s hip-hop covers reveals that they’re not just string versions of Drake songs, but intricate arrangements born from classical training. Like her own identity, they blend myriad elements. In one video, she plays a catchy mashup of “Despacito” and “Shape of You,” nimbly switching between the first’s infectious Reggaeton melody and the second’s samba-inflected syncopation. In another, she revamps “Bodak Yellow” with an elegant lilt; the fierce jam becomes a lush orchestration. Like more musicians these days, where versatility is a smart career move, Ezinma is used to switching hats. She’s performed with Stevie Wonder, British pop group Clean Bandit, and Mac Miller. A conservatory graduate, she also plays plenty of classical gigs, and has performed at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center.

Visibility is vital in classical music. While more crossover artists and musicians of color are emerging, there is still a gulf. According to a 2016 report by the Sphinx Organization, which aims to increase arts diversity, only 4.3% of American orchestra members are black or Latino. When Ezinma does youth outreach to schools and communities of color, she gives young players references, mentioning other artists to check out. It’s something she didn’t receive herself growing up. “At the time, I don’t think there was an awareness of how isolated a young person of color who’s learning a string instrument might feel,” she said.

With this lack of diversity in classical music, there’s a line wedged between classical and hip-hop. While it’s more common for chart-topping hits to meld several genre elements — folk, pop, funk, or dance — Ezinma still observes bewilderment and discomfort from some classical music fans about hip-hop, and vice versa. Tired stereotypes still exist: that classical music is “stuffy” or “boring,” while hip-hop is a “low-brow,” un-elevated art form — still marginalized in mainstream media. The divisions are ironic, Ezinma added, especially since hip-hop tracks that sample classical pieces can work on a sonic level. “It’s like, ‘Wow! This is such a proper, big orchestral sound,’” she said, citing artists like J. Cole and Meek Mill. “It just sounds epic.”

Ezinma makes a point to happily bridge what others view as separate, so it’s no surprise that her debut album, out August 11th, arose from her duality. Key of Black Minor opens a door between classical and hip-hop. In doing so, it’s also a symbolic declaration of Enzima’s biracial identity (“It’s really a celebration of my blackness,” she said). She sounds excited as she speaks, which is something I relate to. As someone who is often referred to in segments — as “half-Filipino” or “half-white,” as if I comprise only fragments of an identity — it’s affirming to see being biracial presented as an alloy. There isn’t a partition between my two “halves.” Despite the attention her YouTube trap covers have garnered, Ezinma said it was important to present this idea within her own compositions. Don’t expect classical spins on trap songs — she posited that fans may be surprised at how classical-heavy the 11 tracks are. “Putting out an album of covers might be more popular, but I think that the first thing that you present the world should be your own and yourself,” she said.

Ezinma’s two co-producers are Anthony Barfield and Orrin Wilson of Velocity Music. Like her, they are classical conservatory trained. Ezinma largely conceived and co-produced several tracks in hotel rooms while on tour, the three collaborating to create an organic hybrid. The album’s lodestone is her composition “Black Minor Symphony.” A nod to tradition, it follows the structure of a four-movement violin concerto. But it interweaves plenty of trap beats and unusual sounds. The last movement is a key example: It opens with a tempest of trilling violins and includes playful Mozart references. However, a hip-hop beat underpins everything. Another track is an homage to her “bluegrass head” mother. It’s a free-flowing fiddle piece galvanized with high-hats and 808s. The fusion makes it gel both in clubs and traditional concert venues, Ezinma insisted. Fans of one genre could leave with an appreciation for the other. Her music fusion is an ever-evolving process: she hopes to visit Guyana one day and explore its folk tunes to deepen her connection to her father’s side.

More than a doorway between classical and hip-hop, Ezinma hopes her work is a racial conduit, too. It’s a place to ruminate on what it means to be mixed — a niche where listeners can explore the sound as not two genres coming together, but as an entirely new form. As a biracial woman, the declaration that being mixed is a valid whole entity — and not something defined only by its disparate parts — is powerful. “It was really important to just declare my voice,” Ezinma told me. “It’s a completely open lane.”

Serena’s ‘Wakanda’ Catsuit About More Than Fashion

PARIS (AP) — Serena Williams considers the black bodysuit she wore at the French Open much more than a fashion statement.

There’s a practical reason for the full-length legs on the skintight outfit: The aim is to protect her because of past bouts with blood clots.

There also is a message she wanted to send about self-worth and feeling powerful as she returned to Grand Slam action with a first-round victory at Roland Garros on Tuesday, about nine months after giving birth to a daughter.

(AP Photo/Alessandra Tarantino)

“It feels like this suit represents all the women that have been through a lot mentally, physically, with their body to come back and have confidence and to believe in themselves,” Williams said after beating Kristyna Pliskova 7-6 (4), 6-4 at Court Philippe Chatrier. “I definitely feel like it is an opportunity for me to inspire a whole different group of amazing women and kids.”

The outfit called to mind Williams’ black “catsuit” that she wore at the 2002 U.S. Open. It also was reminiscent of the white bodysuit that American player Anne White wore at Wimbledon in 1985.

Williams referred to what she wore Tuesday as the “catsuit — the new version, 2.0.”

“I call it, like, my Wakanda-inspired catsuit,” referring to the fictional nation in the film “Black Panther.”

“We designed it way before the movie,” she said, “but still, it kind of reminds me of that.”

Williams said she feels “like a warrior princess, kind of,” when she wears the outfit.

“I’m always living in a fantasy world,” she added. “I always wanted to be a superhero, and it’s kind of my way of being a superhero.”

Tuesday’s match was the first at a major tournament for the 23-time Grand Slam champion in 16 months.

She gave birth on Sept. 1, then dealt with complications related to a pulmonary embolism.

“I had a lot of problems with my blood clots, and, God, I don’t know how many I have had in the past 12 months. So it is definitely a little functionality to it,” Williams said. “I have been wearing pants in general a lot when I play, so I can keep the blood circulation going. It’s a fun suit, but it’s also functional, so I can be able to play without any problems.”
