TSA Says These Are the Best Airport Sneakers

Anxious traveler or not, getting held up at the airport is the not the best way to kick off a vacation. Which is why mastering the ins and outs of TSA is crucial to easy, breezy air travel. While we’ve talked to former-agents about what to avoid wearing before, we thought it best to investigate a little further. With the popularity of sneakers at the airport, what are the best and worst styles to wear?

First things first, Lisa Farbstein, the TSA’s spokesperson notes, “the best footwear is the kind you don’t take off at all. Global entry and TSA pre-check are my recommendation if you find it burdensome.” Signing up for the programs allows you to keep on your shoes and belt, along with eliminating the need to take your laptop out of your bag, but while ideal, the program isn’t an option for all fliers.

With that in mind, Farbstein has some reccommendations. “As it relates to sneakers, some things are obvious,” she says. “Styles you can slip on and off, and those with velcro straps don’t take as long.” Conversely, Farbstein notes that certain styles can be especially tricky, “high tops can take longer to unlace and relace,” she adds that after her own experience navigating TSA in a pair of tricky-to-remove cowboy boots, she hasn’t made the same mistake since, “I learned by experience.”

Bottom line: “the ideal is a pair of shoes you don’t have to take off, but otherwise a slip-on sneaker is the way to go (these are my go-to airport sneakers, BTW). So, with that expert advice in mind, we rounded up the best easy on-and-off sneakers to try for your next trip to the airport.

Things you should know before choosing what to eat at an airport

If you’re heading to the airport for a vacation or business trip, you will probably already be planning how you’re going to kill the hour or two before your flight. If you’re not a big fan of food on the plane (which most people aren’t), then you may be considering filling your belly before you board. However, there are some things you should know before you decide what to eat at an airport.

Avoid the in-flight offerings

We have already briefly touched on this, but we thought we would delve into it in more detail. While some people just don’t like in-flight food, others begrudge paying so much for the measly offerings served on the plane. Airline providers know that you’re pretty stuck for food choices when you’re on the plane, so they can charge what they want for their food. Make sure you fill up before you board.

Avoid the express option

If you don’t have a lot of time, then you might consider somewhere like Cibo Express or Starbucks to grab a quick bite to eat. Unfortunately, these places also charge for their convenience, and you won’t be getting a lot for your money. Plus, much of the food is left sitting there all day, so you’re not always going to get something fresh. If you’re really pushed for time, opt for a cheese plate.

Go for the fries

In fact, go for any food item that the restaurant’s kitchen probably cooks a lot of. The airport isn’t the kind of place to try out something new or fancy; it’s best sticking with comfort foods likes fries. As many of the restaurants use the same kitchens and staff behind the scenes, food that is regularly cooked is likely to taste as it should.

Avoid the fresh food

If you’re trying to be healthy, the airport is not the place to do it. Raw fruit, vegetables, and salad items are a breeding ground for bacteria in an airport. The kitchens move fast, transportation between terminals isn’t always the best, and many foods can sit out for quite a while. If you opt for ‘fresh food’, then you might end up with a bit of a stomach upset. It’s much safer to stick to the cooked food items.

The same applies to meat

If you like your steak or burger rare, then airport food probably isn’t for you. As we have mentioned, airport kitchens can be hasty places, and they might not always cook the meat to the correct internal temperature as recommended by the USDA, to eradicate any bacteria. Medium-rare upwards should be fine, however.

Bye-bye buffets

Don’t those buffet dinners look tempting? Big slices of pizza and bowls of pasta that look like they could really fill that hole in your stomach. Unfortunately, these are the kind of foods that have been sitting out for a while. If you find that employees are constantly replacing the dishes and restocking the buffet, however, then it is a good sign that the food is tasty and fresh.

Go for big brands

While most people will tell you that it’s important to stick to your independents when dining out, that isn’t the case at airports. At the end of the day, the big chains are determined to keep their reputation. This means that they’ll go above and beyond to keep their customer happy and have brand-standards that have to be followed in all of their stores; airport or non-airport. They also tend to be the cheapest options, as well.

The next time your plane is delayed, and your belly is rumbling, consider these pointers when you’re choosing what to eat at the airport. Avoid the salads and food lying around for too long and go for the comfort foods from your favorite chains instead. It sure beats a soggy sandwich on the plane!

Emily Ratajkowski is on the move. Spotted at the airport in Los Angeles, the newlywed skipped her usual Zara wares in favor of another affordable cult brand: Birkenstock. She wore the label’s Arizona Suede Leather Sandals ($ 145), which boast a cozy shearling lining.

Of course, Birkenstock sandals can be polarizing—some people swear by the comfortable shoes while others will balk at the “ugly” shoe trend. But there’s no denying that the slides would be easy to slip on and off for security at the airport, so perhaps Ratajkowski is on to something. She rounded out the casual look with low-slung trousers, her signature ab-baring crop-top, and an oversize denim jacket. Read on to see the look in full and shop her sandals.

The Surprising Place Where You’re Likely to Encounter Germs at the Airport

Traveling is a fun experience, and going to the airport can be pretty exciting nowadays. Basically, your vacation starts from the second you arrive at the airport – it’s like an extension of your vacay. However, there are certain things that you need to consider when you get to the airport. You need to have a travel plan in place, leave plenty of time, and pack efficiently, but you also need to avoid germs!

This might sound like a strange point to add on the end, but you would be surprised by just how many germs there are floating around in the airport. Let’s be honest, flying isn’t exactly fun for germaphobes, what with countless germs floating around inside the cabin. But, there are other areas you need to watch out for as well. Follow this guide, and don’t let germs ruin your vacation:

Why you need to be careful

It’s pretty clear that there are plenty of areas that can affect us in terms of germs and illnesses when we go traveling. The airport is full of different people from all walks of life, and some of them are going to be poorly. But, you have got to make sure you are careful, and that you don’t get ill because otherwise, you’re going to ruin your vacation. You don’t want to spend half your trip bedridden now, do you?

Wear a face mask

A lot of travelers bring face masks with them and will wear them during the flight, and up until they leave the airport. This might seem excessive, but it is also a very useful thing for those visiting cities where pollution levels are high. If you have a weak immune system, you need to make sure you wear a face mask when you travel – it will certainly protect you against germs.

Bring hand sanitizer

If you are bringing luggage with you to check in at the self check-in kiosks, make sure you bring some hand sanitizer with you. Tests have shown that, of all tested areas in the airport, the self-service check-in kiosk is the one containing the most germs! In fact, even bathroom flush buttons were considered to be more hygienic! So, if you are going to check your own luggage in at the airport, make sure you have some hand gel with you to use afterward!

Stop worrying

Bear in mind that this shouldn’t necessarily be cause for concern. Many of the germs and bacteria out there are not harmful to us and are actually necessary for the body and immune system to function properly. But, if you want to play it safe, make sure you carry a bottle of sanitizer with you and even consider wearing gloves for your journey.

Airports are actually somewhat less hygienic than you might have imagined, and this is why you need to take precautions. It’s important to make sure you are looking after your body and immune system as much as possible, and these are some of the things you should know that will help you with this.

This Airport Is Now Offering Nonstop Flights to the Kingdom of Wakanda

Marvel’s deservedly much-hyped Black Panther opened to rave reviews and a whopping $ 242 million during its debut over President’s day weekend and it appears that the influence of the film is taking flight — literally.

In honor of the film, Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport is now offering nonstop flights to the Kingdom of Wakanda, the fictional African country that King T’Challa hails from in Black Panther. The airport tweeted out a photo on Tuesday of a sign for a flight destined for Wakanda that night along with the caption “The bags are packed” and a hashtag of the film’s noted catchphrase, “Wakanda Forever.”

The Atlanta airport’s homage to Wakanda got a special shoutout from one of Black Panther’s stars, Lupita Nyong’o, who took to her Twitter to inquire about the in-flight entertainment, something the airport happily responded to.

This hilarious nod to Wakanda from the Atlanta airport isn’t unfounded either, especially when you consider that much of the movie was filmed on location in metro Atlanta.

Power Has Been Restored to Atlanta Airport After a Blackout Caused Hundreds of Flight Cancellations

One of the heaviest travel weeks of the year began with the cancellation of hundreds of flights on Sunday at the world’s busiest airport in Atlanta, where a power outage left passengers stranded in darkened terminals or in aircraft idling on tarmacs.

The early afternoon outage paralyzed operations at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport through Sunday evening. Even though power was finally restored at close to midnight Sunday, the incident continued to wreak havoc on holiday travel plans for thousands of people hit by airline cancellations extending into Monday.

Delta

dal

said it was cancelling about 300 flights on Monday, on top of the 900 Sunday cancellations as a result of the Atlanta outage. United Air Lines

ual

also warned on social media that travel on Monday may be affected.

The incident led the Federal Aviation Administration to ground flights bound for Atlanta. American Airlines

aal

and Southwest Airlines

luv

were also among the major carriers that suspended operations at the airport on Sunday. Southwest canceled 70 departures on Sunday.

All passengers had safely disembarked from aircraft by approximately 10 p.m., or nine hours after the outage began, Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed said on Twitter

twtr

. On Twitter, some passengers reported sitting on planes for hours.

Reed had told reporters earlier in the evening that the airport was expected to be fully operational again by midnight.

The FAA said air traffic control remained fully staffed, with the airport open and accepting general aviation and cargo operations. It expected commercial traffic to resume on Monday.

The city was providing shelter to stranded passengers at the Georgia International Convention Center. The city said that Chick-fil-A would be providing food for passengers. By late Sunday the city said it had provided 2,000 meals.

“We’re just focusing on the comfort of our passengers,” Reed told a news conference. “We know they have had a very, very long and difficult day.”

For more about holiday air travel problems, watch Fortune’s video:

Georgia Power, the utility that provides electricity to the sprawling airport, said the failure was linked to a fire in an underground facility that damaged substations serving Hartsfield. The blaze damaged access to a backup system, Reed told reporters, adding the cause remained unknown.

Photos and videos posted on social media showed passengers huddled in partial darkness inside crowded terminals.

“Stuck on a plane at Atlanta Airport as the power is out there … bedlam inside and boredom out here!” Jack Harris wrote on Twitter.

For all carriers, nearly 700 flights scheduled to fly out of Hartsfield, or 60 percent, were canceled on Sunday as of 10:30 p.m. EST, while 477 of all scheduled inbound flights were scratched, airline tracking service FlightAware said.

The Fight to Rename a Kentucky Airport After Muhammad Ali Continues

Muhammad Ali

Earlier this month, Black Enterprise reported on the more than yearlong, uphill battle a Kentucky-based educator, Robert Holmes III, has faced in hopes of honoring Muhammad Ali in Louisville, the city where “The People’s Champ” was born and raised. Back in June 2016, Holmes launched the Global Friends of Muhammad Ali, a grassroots effort that is committed to renaming the Louisville International Airport to “Muhammad Ali International Airport.” The group started a petition on Change.org, calling on Ali fans to support an initiative that would pay tribute to the legendary boxer. After being shared on MPowerChange.org, it collected over 14,000 signatures.

Muhammad Ali (Image; Muhammad Ali 1966 via Wikimedia/Creative Commons)

Despite receiving an overwhelming number of signatures and even support from members of the Ali family, Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer’s spokesperson Chris Poynter told Black Enterprise that “there is no active committee looking at the matter of renaming the airport.” He added that the power to change the name lies within the Louisville Regional Airport Authority, which “will ultimately make any decision to rename the airport.” The Louisville Regional Airport Authority, however, also confirmed that it “has no current plans to change the name of Louisville International Airport (SDF).”

In addition, Fischer’s office reached out to BE emphasizing that the city has already paid homage to their hometown hero in a variety of other ways. “Louisville has several major Ali memorials already, including the Muhammad Ali Center (a major institution) and a prominent street named after The Champ. By focusing only on the airport, you leave the impression that the Champ’s hometown isn’t honoring his legacy, which is the furthest from the truth,” said Poynter.

Holmes, however, dismissed the mayor’s response as “a great attempt at a political spin to dodge the question. It’s obvious that Louisville has done things to honor its greatest citizen, but that’s not the [issue].” Holmes added that other cities, like New Orleans, have renamed their airports after superstar natives. “If they can name their airport after Louis Armstrong, who’s a jazz musician, certainly Louisville should be able to coalesce around the idea of renaming the airport.”

According to Holmes, the opposition to rename the airport boils down to the fact that Ali was an outspoken black man who voiced opposition to racism and war. “I feel that there is a racial component to it and I think that’s one of the reasons why people don’t want to touch it,” he says. “Because he was a very brash, young man in very turbulent times during the 60’s and the early 70’s. He spoke his mind and he stood his ground and he stood up for what he believed in. He stood up against social injustice and racial disparities not only all over the world, but he also spoke about the racial disparities right here in his hometown.” After winning the heavyweight championship, the boxing legend “returned back to Louisville, [but] he didn’t receive a total warm welcome from the entire city. There were segments of the white community that did not celebrate Muhammad Ali and you still have that today.”

Although Mayor Fischer’s office told Black Enterprise that the airport authority will make the ultimate decision to rename the airport, Holmes pointed out that the mayor maintains power to appoint “several members of the board.”

“If he wanted to make that decision, to say that I want to rename this airport in honor of Muhammad Ali, I don’t believe it is that hard,” said Holmes.

Scotty McCreery Cited for Accidentally Carrying Loaded Gun Through Airport: ‘I Have Learned a Lesson I Won’t Forget’

Scotty McCreery has been cited for trying to carry a loaded gun through a security checkpoint at Raleigh-Durham International Airport in North Carolina, PEOPLE confirms.

The incident occurred on July 13 when the country singer, 23, arrived at the airport after a day at the firing range and forgot to remove the loaded weapon – a black, 9 mm Smith & Wesson handgun – from his backpack, The News & Observer reports. The X-ray screen also caught McCreery’s two boxes of ammo that contained 63 bullets.

While the season 10 American Idol winner does have a permit to carry a concealed handgun, he was cited for a misdemeanor violation for trying to carry the firearm through an airport checkpoint and board a plane with it, according to authorities.

“I have been a concealed carry permit holder for awhile now after being robbed at gunpoint in 2014, and I take gun safety very seriously. While in-between tour dates last week, I went to go target shooting with a friend a few days before an early flight out of my hometown Raleigh-Durham airport,” McCreery tells PEOPLE in a statement.

“Unfortunately, I did not realize that I left my pistol in my backpack until the TSA found it during the security X-ray screening and rightly confiscated it. I had my concealed carry permit on me so once they had checked everything out, they then released me to catch the next available flight. Great to know our airport security force is on the job. I have learned a lesson that I won’t forget.”

Nearly one year ago, McCreery witnessed the sentencing of Mikkail Jamal Shaw to 17 years in prison for the 2014 home invasion. McCreery and three of his friends were robbed at gunpoint with a pistol and assault rifle inside of a Raleigh home.

Still, McCreery does not let the frightening experience keep him from putting himself in the public eye to do what he loves.

Last month, the country crooner released the music video for his single “Five More Minutes,” which features the singer’s family home movies from over the years. The video is dedicated to both of McCreery’s grandfathers, and directed and produced by Jeff Ray.

“The whole song is talking about time, and time gone by, and time you still wish you had, and those home videos are precious moments,” McCreery told PEOPLE at the time. “Everybody’s got those kind of videos that makes you look back on your life.”

Raisman says that a female at airport security asked her if she was a gymnast and said she recognized her because of her biceps, to which a man at the scene responded, “I don’t see any muscles,” while continuing to stare at her.

The Olympian, 22, went on to say that the man was “very rude” and was “staring at me shaking his head like it couldn’t be me because I didn’t look ‘strong enough’ to him. Not cool.
”

Not only did Raisman find the experience “rude and uncomfortable,” she says it’s indicative of a larger issue.

“I work very hard to be healthy and fit,” she tweeted. “The fact that a man thinks he judge my arms pisses me off. I am so sick of this judgmental generation. If you are a man who can’t compliment a girl’s you are sexist. Get over yourself. Are you kidding me? It’s 2017. When will this change?

This isn’t the first time Raisman has talked about being judged for her physique. The athlete took to Instagram last November to open up about being teased when she was younger by boys at school because of her “muscular arms that were considered weird and gross.”

“Don’t ever let anyone tell you how you should or shouldn’t look,” she posted at the time. “There is no such thing as a perfect body type.”

Wildlife In Airport Environments: Preventing Animal-aircraft Collisions Through Science-based Management

Wildlife In Airport Environments: Preventing Animal-aircraft Collisions Through Science-based Management

The pilot watches the instrument panel and prepares for touchdown-a routine landing until a burst of birds, a coyote, or a herd of deer crosses the runway! Every year, pilots experience this tension and many aircraft come into direct contact with birds and other wildlife, resulting in more than one billion dollars in damage annually. The United States Federal Aviation Administration has recorded a rise in these incidents over the past decade due to the combined effects of more reporting, rebounding wildlife populations, and an increased number of flights. Wildlife in Airport Environments tackles the issue of what to do about encounters with wildlife in and around airports-from rural, small-craft airparks to major international hubs. Whether the problem is birds or bats in the flight path or a moose on the runway, the authors provide a thorough overview of the science behind wildlife management at airports. This well-written, carefully documented volume presents a clear synthesis for researchers, wildlife managers, and airport professionals. The book belongs in the hands of all those charged with minimizing the risks that wildlife pose to air travel. Wildlife in Airport Environments is the first book in the series Wildlife Management and Conservation and is published in association with The Wildlife Society.ContributorsMichael L.
