Why the Worst Thing About Baseball Is Also the Best Thing About Baseball

Baseball is a booming business. With total annual revenues of more than $ 10 billion (yes, billion) last season — a record — and enjoying a 24-year era of labor peace, the game first dubbed the “national pastime” in print in 1856 has retained its unique hold on the nation’s historical imagination. But this American tradition faces a serious problem: Baseball has the oldest fan base of any major sport, and there is a basic dissonance between the concentration and long attention span baseball demands and the habits of younger generations raised to expect action to be a click away.

Although it is difficult to make direct year-to-year comparisons because of the increase in viewing on digital devices, the trend over the past decade is clear in numerous studies, including the venerable Nielsen ratings. The average age of those who watch nationally televised Major League Baseball games rose from 52 years old in 2000 to 57 in 2016. (The average age of National Basketball Association viewers is around 42.) Asked in one survey whether they followed baseball or not, nearly two-thirds of those from 18 through 35 said no.

Michael Haupert, a professor of economics at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse who studies baseball as a business, explains why many young people, accustomed to our culture of digital distraction, might be bored by what to an older and more knowledgeable fan is one of the most exciting experiences in sports: a no-hitter. “One of the main reasons there’s a slow learning curve in understanding baseball is fairly obvious,” he says. “Failure is more common than success. If my students get a third of the answers right on their test, they flunk. If a ballplayer gets a hit a third of the time, he’s often one of the stars of the game.” Watch an N.B.A. game for 15 seconds, and you will likely see one team score. In baseball, you’re lucky if someone scores in an entire inning.

It is not surprising that the length of games — around three hours, give or take a few minutes, in recent years — and the pace of action within the game has become a subject of contention among those who love baseball and want to see it endure.

M.L.B. Commissioner Rob Manfred is strongly committed to speeding up the pace of the game, as well as reducing its overall length. For the 2018 season, with the tepid assent of the players’ union, M.L.B. issued a set of new rules designed to do just that. Mound visits are now mostly limited to six per nine innings. (Trips by players to the mound to clean the mud off their spikes in rainy conditions do not count as an official visit—a decision that must have tortured some analytics genius.) A timer countdown is designed to shorten the break between innings, and the pitcher must throw his final warmup pitch before the clock strikes 20 minutes. New phone lines connect each club’s video-review rooms and the dugout, with the supposed purpose of monitoring communications and discouraging sign-stealing. (I must confess that I have always found sign-stealing an amusing part of the game — one which any team whose manager has a brain can find other ways to discourage.)

The 2018 changes do not include a pitch clock — something that Manfred wants and about which the head of the players union, Tony Clark, is known to be dubious. Imposing a clock limiting the amount of time a pitcher has to deliver the ball to the plate would, in my view, fundamentally change the nature of the game by impeding the psychological warfare between pitcher and batter that makes baseball — well, baseball.

No one knows whether any of the much-discussed changes will shorten games to a significant degree. After the first 119 games of the 2018 season (hardly a definitive sample, since more than 2000 games are played every year), the length of a nine-inning game actually jumped by five minutes from last year.

But all of these proposed changes to speed up baseball miss the point. My own research suggests that young people are unlikely to care whether a game lasts two-and-a-half or three hours, when they are used to speedy action being literally one click away. I learned baseball from spending hours in my grandfather’s bar and listening to his cronies talk about the history of the game.

I interviewed at least 100 semi-fans in their late teens and early twenties for my new book. All considered themselves baseball fans to some degree, though they rarely watched more than snatches — on iPads or smartphones. They told me it made no difference to them whether a game lasted two or three hours: They would not pay attention for either amount of time. A New York high school junior whom I’ll call Meryl, a Mets fan, follows the standings on her phone but only accompanies her parents to the ballpark once a year. I asked whether she took her phone to the park. “Oh sure,” she said, ‘but it makes my dad crazy, so a lot of the time I’ll say I have to go to the bathroom so I can check my texts without getting hassled.” (Meryl, like nearly all of the teens I interviewed, did not want her real name used because she doesn’t want her parents to know how much time she spends on her phone.)

This teenager could still turn into a lifelong fan — because she does have parents who care about the game — or she could drop baseball altogether in her twenties.

One new factor — a historic May 14 U.S. Supreme Court decision allowing all states to legalize sports betting — could have an impact on all this, albeit an uncertain one. But when states rewrite their laws to take advantage of the decision, more people of all ages will be able to gamble on all sports while comfortably watching a game on their couch. Whether more young people will be attracted to baseball by easier gambling is a huge unknown. Many already gamble, both legally and illegally, on Internet fantasy sports but legalization will provide yet another distraction during games in real time. Will some states allow betting windows in ballparks or include “betting reports” in television broadcasts? Will easier gambling make the young more likely to bet on baseball than on other sports? Stay tuned.

I don’t know what will hook young people like Meryl on baseball as I was hooked in my grandfather’s bar. But I do not think that abandoning the game’s unique selling proposition — the timelessness that provides both suspense and great conversation for the educated fan — is the answer. Baseball, Clark told me in an interview, is like a game of chess — and too many shortening, simplifying changes might turn it into something “more akin to a game of checkers.” But there is a strong argument to be made that baseball will survive in spite of its current challenges, precisely because it stands out and stands up against the short attention spans that adversely affect every aspect of our culture — including politics and education, as well as sports. And, as Casey Stengel is said to have said, “Never make predictions. Especially about the future.”

A LONDON 2012 Paralympian has become the first ever blind contestant to appear on ITV’s Ninja Warrior.

Dan Powell, 26, from Liverpool, will appear on the show tomorrow tackling the challenging assault course despite only have three per cent vision.

London 2012 Paralympian Dan Powell, here with his guide dog and presenter Rochelle Humes, has become the first ever blind contestant to appear on ITV’s Ninja Warrior

And the judo competitor turned runner says the show was “a hundred times scarier” than competing at the London games six years ago.

In an exclusive interview with the Sun’s Bizarre TV column, Dan said: “Ninja Warrior was a hundred times scarier than competing in London 2012. In London 2012 I knew what I was there to do, I knew what I was going into, I had practised loads.

“The crowd at Ninja Warrior was amazing though, it was just like the Paralympics. It made the hairs stand up on the back of your neck.”

He added: “I’ve got no central sight basically and they were basically saying ‘can we make the lighting better? Can we do anything to help you? Can we talk you through it?’

“They gave me a very good description of the obstacles. There’s only so much describing you can do though before you physically get on there but at the same time it actually gave me a bit of a fighting chance to give it a go.”

But Dan admits that one of the sections left him with bruising on his ribs for three days after filming.

He said: “There was one of the obstacles where you jump off a ledge and you just hit this pendulum and for me it was about jumping out and waiting for my chest to hit it and cling onto it.

“I managed to stay on that and my ribs were hurting for about three days afterwards.”

The athlete made it to the Tick Tock obstacle, almost at the end of the course, before falling in the water.

He hopes taking part in the prime time show will inspire other disabled people to apply.

Dan said: “I hope it comes across that with my disability the adaptions can be made. I went on there first and foremost to inspire a couple of people. Show the ability side.

“It wasn’t a big focus on the fact I’ve got this disability. I didn’t get to the end but the crowd were just incredible.”

One-legged amputee Martin Herald, 26, was hailed an “inspiration” by viewers after competing on the show two weeks ago.

SPORTING GOOD UPDATE:

Olympic Gymnast Jordyn Wieber Says She Was Also Abused by Team Doctor

Olympic gymnast Jordyn Wieber is the fourth member of the 2012 Fierce Five to accuse the national team doctor of sexual abuse. Her teammates Gabby Douglas, McKayla Maroney and Aly Raisman have all said that they were sexually abused by national team doctor Larry Nassar.

Reading a prepared statement at the sentencing hearing of Nassar in a Lansing, Mich., court, Wieber fought back tears as she delivered a six-minute statement.

Read more: Why It’s a Big Deal That USA Gymnastics Is Cutting Ties With the Karolyi Ranch

Wieber said she began seeing Nassar at age eight, since she grew up in Lansing and Nassar worked at nearby Michigan State University. Over a period of years, through the time Wieber competed at the 2012 Olympic Games in London where the women’s squad earned the team gold, Nassar continued to abuse her, convincing her the abuse was medical treatment, Wieber said.

Our bodies were all hanging by a thread when we were in London. Who was the doctor that USAG [USA Gymnastics] sent to keep us healthy and help us get through? The doctor that was our abuser. The doctor that is a child molester. Because of my shin, I couldn’t train without being in extreme pain, and it affected the number of routines I could do to prepare before the competition. And, ultimately, it made me feel less prepared than I should have been. I didn’t qualify to the all-around competition, and I went through a dark time right before we won the team gold.

Now, I question everything about that injury and the medical treatment I received. Was Larry even doing anything to help my pain? Was I getting the proper medical care, or was he only focused on which one of us he was going to prey on next? What does he think about when he massaged my sore muscles every day? Now I question everything.

Wieber, along with her teammates, also criticized USA Gymnastics, the sport’s governing body, for failing to protect her and her teammates, as the abuse happened not only at the training camps but at international competitions as well.

To this day, I still don’t know how he could have been allowed to do this for so long. My teammates and I were subjected to his medical care every single month at the national-team training center in Texas. He was the only male allowed to be present in the athlete dorm rooms to do whatever treatments he wanted. He was allowed to treat us in hotel rooms alone without any supervision. He took photos of us during training and whenever else he wanted. Nobody was protecting us from being taken advantage of. Nobody was even concerned whether or not we were being sexually abused. I was not protected, and neither were my teammates.

My parents trusted USA Gymnastics and Larry Nassar to take care of me, and we were betrayed by both. And now the lack of accountability from USAG, USOC and Michigan State have caused me and many other girls to remain shameful, confused and disappointed.

USA Gymnastics announced that it would no longer hold monthly training camps at the Karolyi ranch in Houston, Texas, where some of the abuse allegedly occurred. Wieber, who now coaches gymnastics at University of California Los Angeles, called for both USA Gymnastics and the United States Olympic Committee to take responsibility for not protecting her and her teammates from Nassar.

And now the people who are responsible need to accept responsibility for the pain they have caused me and the rest of the women who have been abused. Larry Nassar is accountable. USA Gymnastics is accountable. The U.S. Olympic Committee is accountable. My teammates and friends have been through enough, and now it’s time for change because the current and future gymnasts do not deserve to live in anxiety, fear or be unprotected like I was.

As Bitcoin Prices Plunge, Overstock, Square Shareholders Also Hurt

As Bitcoin’s price plunged near $ 10,000 Tuesday on news of a strengthening cryptocurrency crackdown in Asia, companies that have tied their fortunes to cryptocurrency and blockchain are also taking a beating along with their investors.

Payments processor Square, which announced plans to allow for some Bitcoin buying and selling, lost 5%, or $ 90 million in market value on Tuesday. The company, led by Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, ended regular trading valued at $ 15.1 billion.

Meanwhile, shares in Overstock, the e-commerce company that allows customers to pay in cryptocurrency, fell 11%. It ended the day with a $ 1.8 billion market capitalization, a loss of roughly $ 200 million.

The fall comes as South Korea–one of the biggest markets for Bitcoin and its close cousins–considers a cryptocurrency ban. China is also putting more teeth behind its regulations for online and app-based cryptocurrency services that are similar to exchanges, Bloomberg reported on Monday.

Square and Overstock weren’t the only companies to experience a fall out. In recent months, some smaller companies have announced plans to move into the blockchain space, and in same cases, rebrand themselves to include the word “blockchain” to gain some of the ample investor enthusiasm for anything even tangentially related to cyrptocurrencies.

In doing so, they’ve also tied themselves to the volatility in cryptocurrency prices. Shares of Riot Blockchain, once a biotech firm dubbed Bioptix, shed 17% Tuesday. And Chanticleer, a owner of some Hooters locations, shed 4%.

Eastman Kodak, perhaps better known for their cameras, fell 8%. The company has announced plans to offer a cryptocurrency known as KodakCoin at the end of the month, initially sending shares up 60% on the day of the announcement.

Shares of Long Blockchain, once Long Island Iced Tea, shed 2%. The one-time beverage maker announced plans Tuesday to merge with a U.K.-based firm, Stater Blockchain, “focused on developing and deploying globally scalable blockchain technology solutions in the financial markets.”

Olympic Champion Simone Biles Says She Was Also Sexually Abused by Team Doctor

In a tweet hashtagged #MeToo, reigning Olympic all-around champion Simone Biles revealed that she was a victim of sexual abuse by team doctor Larry Nassar.

“I too am one of the many survivors that was sexually abused Larry Nassar,” Biles writes.

“There are many reasons that I have been reluctant to share my story, but I know now it is not my fault,” she adds.” I am not afraid to tell my story anymore.”

Biles credits the recent revelations by her friends and teammates including Gabby Douglas, McKayla Maroney, Maggie Nichols and Aly Raisman with helping her to also speak up. Like those gymnasts, Biles also lays blame with USA Gymnastics, the sport’s governing body, for failing to protect her and others from Nassar’s abuse.

“It is not normal to receive any type of treatment from a trusted team physician and refer to it horrifyingly as the ‘special’ treatment,” Biles writes. “This behavior is completely unacceptable, disgusting, and abuse, especially coming from someone whom I was TOLD to trust.”

According to accounts by more than 100 gymnasts, Nassar, who volunteered as the national team doctor for USA Gymnastics, abused the athletes under the guise of medical treatment for years, including at the national team training camps in Houston, Tex. and at international competitions.

In a lawsuit filed against USA Gymnastics, Maroney says that she was paid by USA Gymnastics to keep the allegations of abuse private. In her suit, Nichols says that the organization delayed reporting Nassar to law enforcement for five weeks.

In response to Nichols’ suit, USA Gymnastics said in a statement that “U.S.A. Gymnastics kept the matter confidential because of the F.B.I.’s directive not to interfere with the investigation. U.S.A. Gymnastics reported Nassar to the F.B.I. in July 2015 and to a different F.B.I. office again in April 2016.”

Nassar pleaded guilty to federal charges of child pornography in December, and was sentenced to 60 years in prison. He pleaded guilty to 10 counts of first degree criminal sexual assault in two Michigan courts; the sentencing hearings are scheduled for this month and many of the athletes who were abused are expected to testify.

Identity Theft Is Also A Problem for African Americans’ Business and Personal Finance

Since the rise of the internet, identity theft has been a growing problem in the United States, affecting both consumers and business owners alike. Business owners are more profitable for identity thieves, due to the potential to hack into larger credit lines, bank balances, and reserve accounts, along with the fact that less oversight of business accounts (compared to consumer accounts) means that it’s easier for hackers to open other commercial credit lines at a rapid pace. Here are some facts:
  • There’s now over 12 million victims of identity theft per year and at least 5% are African American
  • Nearly 35 million Americans have been a victim in some capacity
  • Nearly 10% of all U.S. households have been a victim in some capacity
  • 22% of identity theft victims have experienced multiple cases of identity theft
  • 29% of victims spend a month or more trying to resolve identity theft problems
  • Nearly 40% of victims report bouts of severe emotional distress as a result
  • Average loss per identity theft case is over $ 5,000
  • Total identity theft losses in 2014 were $ 26,350,000,000
  • Half of identity theft cases go unnoticed for at least 30 days
  • 1 out of 10 identity theft crimes go unnoticed or hidden for 2 or more years
Due to the well-known fact that most black businesses have lower sources of capital, assets, and general wealth/resources compared to their white counterparts, it’s vital that a black business owner do the best that they can to avoid becoming a victim of business or personal identity theft.

Hacking Procedures

As covered by the BBB, identity thieves can hack into your personal or business information through a variety of ways:
  • Bank accounts
  • Credit reports
  • Loan accounts
  • Fraudulent business filings
  • Social Security numbers
  • Tax Identification numbers
  • Credit Card accounts
  • Cell phone service
  • Internet account service
  • Pretending to be you or a major manager of your company to gain external data
Thieves will usually use stolen card numbers, bank accounts, etc., to immediately purchase items that they can resell for cash on the black market. These actions can obviously leave a business with a destroyed credit rating, loss of revenue, loss of business, potential cash-flow issues, and a variety of other problems.

Identity Management

Here are a variety of steps you can take to help reduce the risk of becoming a victim of identity theft through either your personal or business related information:
  • Do not send any information to people you don’t know.
  • Keep all important business and personal documentation in a secure place.
  • Use anti-virus software, fraud management tools, and firewalls for all technologies, computers, and devices.
  • Review your business and personal credit reports often, with alerts notifying you of when there’s any type of change to your profiles or reports.
  • Sign up for identity theft insurance, which comes with monitoring services to notify you of suspicious activity
  • Sign up for online banking, set up various security alerts/controls and review all of your details daily within your bank accounts.
  • Make sure all of the alerts on your credit cards, credit line accounts, loan accounts, insurance accounts, investment accounts, and any other important accounts are set up to notify you of when there’s any changes, additions, updates, etc. Also, try to review said accounts on at least a bi-weekly basis.
  • Run a lien check, business record check, and other public information check against your personal and business profiles at least on a quarterly basis, or have some sort of credit monitoring program that monitors these activities.

If An Event Occurs

If you think you might be a victim, contact your identity theft insurance provider immediately to notify them. In addition, file a police report and place a fraud alert on all accounts. Also, make sure to contact all of your partners, bankers, creditors, accountants, attorneys, vendors, suppliers, etc., to notify them of the situation and begin making various arrangements for assistance or payment modifications. Perps are getting more creative in how they steal information and more efficient in how fast they sell off stolen purchased items. Billions a year are being lost along with destroyed identities and reputations. Manage your identity to the fullest and don’t let the perps win.

Science is talking about sunscreen made from DNA, and we’re scared but also definitely intrigued

Science is talking about sunscreen made from DNA, and we’re scared but also definitely intrigued

Science is talking about sunscreen made from DNA, and we’re scared but also definitely intrigued

We all know how important sunscreen is. It protects your face from prematurely aging. It keeps dreaded, painful sunburn at bay. Most importantly, it’s your number one defense against skin cancer! So if you’re not already incorporating some SPF into your daily routine, you probably know you should be. But one of the hardest parts of practicing good sunscreen habits is the need to reapply. Depending on your activity level, it can be a lot. So that’s why we’re so intrigued by a new breakthrough that mixes sunscreen with…DNA.

Thanks to a few enterprising dermatoepidemiologists (yeah, say that ten times fast!), there’s a possibility that DNA sunscreen could become a thing. UV rays can cause cancer, which is why you always want to look for a sunscreen product that blocks those. But nothing’s one hundred perfect foolproof, so those scientists got to thinking and came up with a genius (and sort of gross!) idea.

There’s a lot of complicated ideas behind this, but we’ll try to break it down for you.

Researchers at Binghamton University had a weird thought and followed it through. They decided to expose a film of DNA to UV rays and see what happened. Apparently it’s possible to make DNA into a stretchy film-like substance, so that’s what they did. Don’t ask what kind of DNA they used. You don’t wanna know. (It was salmon…sperm. Major EW.) Then they stuck is under UV light and measured the consequences.

Their research showed that the DNA film actually became stronger and more resilient the longer it was exposed to the light. While the film itself showed signs of sun damage, nothing beneath it was affected. Which is crazy! Imagine putting on a sunscreen that clung to your body like a second skin, and only got stronger in blocking sun damage as your beach day went on. Sounds like a scientific breakthrough in the making. But don’t worry, if it becomes a reality, it probably won’t be made out of salmon stuff. They’ve got a ways to go to take it from theoretical film to actuality. But maybe one day!

SHOPPING DEALS UPDATE:

These ‘La La Land’ Songwriters Are Also Behind Your Latest Broadway Obsession

Before a shower of Academy Awards rain down upon all those associated with  “La La Land” on Sunday, let’s take a moment to remember that two of the film’s nominees are also responsible for the biggest musical theater hit of the year.

Years before Mia and Sebastian danced among the stars, composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul were already being hailed as the heirs to Rodgers and Hammerstein. With the debut of their celebrated new musical “Dear Evan Hansen,” currently playing at the Music Box Theatre in New York City, Pasek and Paul are poised to become the premier songwriting team working today.

The two first met during their freshman year at the University of Michigan where they were both studying musical theater. Bonding over the shared embarrassment of being the two worst dancers in a ballet class, Pasek and Paul soon turned their attention to writing songs. After a transformative apprenticeship with “Avenue Q” co-creator Robert Lopez, the duo began developing an impressive resume filled with musical adaptations of movies like “Dogfight” and “A Christmas Story.”

But it was “Dear Evan Hansen” that catapulted Pasek and Paul into the upper echelon of the musical theater community. Starring Ben Platt of “Pitch Perfect” as the anxious teenage depressive boy next door, “Dear Evan Hansen” has all the trappings of a hit modern musical. After a classmate he barely knew commits suicide, high schooler Evan (Platt) inserts himself into the lives of the deceased’s family, as he struggles with his own demons and self-confidence. The irresistibly catchy ballads pair well with the story of a teenager grappling with his place in the world, as big themes of love and loss are boiled down to a fiercely relatable level.

As the “Dear Evan Hansen” team was preparing for the show’s Broadway debut, the two already had their eye on another project: Damien Chazelle’s “La La Land.” In a pitch to the director, Pasek and Paul wrote the proposed lyrics for the song “City of Stars,” which garnered the duo a Golden Globe award earlier this year and is nominated for an Academy Award. Chazelle was immediately impressed, describing the duo as a “goldmine,” and the rest is award show history.

Although “La La Land” and “Dear Evan Hansen” have little in common thematically ― one is consumed by nostalgia, while the other is decidedly forward-thinking ― in Pasek and Paul’s eyes, the two productions do share a connection.

Speaking with The New York Times in November, Pasek said, “I think we’re attracted to material that’s hopeful and messy, and in that mess, there’s an attempt at getting at truth.”

Get to know Pasek and Paul a little better in the interview below.

MFAA: The History of the Monuments, Fine Arts and Archives Program (Also Known as Monuments Men)

MFAA: The History of the Monuments, Fine Arts and Archives Program (Also Known as Monuments Men)

The Holocaust was the systematic murder of six million European Jews by Adolf Hitler’s Nazi Party. The horrors of the Holocaust have documented been many times. Even those that were not killed, mutilated, or starved in concentration camps were stripped of their citizenship and their identities. The Nazis did not stop there, though. Hitler, in his quest to build an empire, planned and executed the most extensive theft of art and cultural treasures in history. A group of art historians, museum curators, scholars, and others with an expertise in art accepted the enormous responsibility of traveling to the front lines of World War II in an effort to protect art before it could be stolen or recover the art that fell into the hands of the Nazis. Even more lent their expertise when the fighting ended, remaining in Europe for years after the war was over. They were called “Venus fixers” by the troops but have since come to be known as the Monuments Men. Acting on orders from General Dwight D. Eisenhower, who had the backing of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, many of the Monuments Men – and women – put their lives on the line for art. By doing so, they preserved not just paintings, sculptures, and tapestries, but a significant portion of the culture that makes life worth living. As Mikhail Piotrovsky, the director of the State Hermitage Museum in Russia, said, “Art belongs to humanity. Art is what makes us human.” This book dives into the fascinating history of one of the greatest treasure hunts of all time! HistoryCaps is an imprint of BookCaps Study Guides. With each book, a brief period of history is recapped. These Are 16 Things CVS Should Also Stop Selling

This past week drugstore chain CVS announced that it will no longer sell tobacco products at its stores. The move will cost them upwards of $ 2 billion in revenue and is part of their effort to be more of a healthcare company. Many are applauding the move. I agree. But why stop there? Ever been to a CVS? There are plenty of other products that they sell that should also be taken off the shelves. I can think of 16 right of the top of my head. Examples?

Shampoo. Nope, haven’t used the stuff in years. And you wouldn’t believe what I save on barber visits. Someday I’ll sit you down and explain to you some of the benefits of being bald. I see a lot of bald guys around like me. Not sure what all that shampoo fuss is about.

Weight loss supplements. My thinking: For most people eating less and exercising a little will result in losing weight. CVS might want to coach its customers on this healthy approach rather than selling them amphetamines in a can. Might as well be selling chocolate, cakes and chips in the next aisle over. Oh… you do?

Extra large condoms. I want to know who’s really buying these. Is this some kind of a cruel joke? Are the executives at CVS poking fun at guys like me and offering some kind of subliminal message to their women customers, like “You know, you could be doing better. Just hang around this aisle for a while.” Shouldn’t these things be sold in some kind of specialty store, like a magic shop or a place where NBA players frequent?

Vitamins. Unless you haven’t seen the sun in a few months or live on a diet of fast food you’re likely not going to need vitamins. And yet there are aisles filled with them. Study after study show that most vitamins are essentially worthless. CVS should stop selling these. Except for the Flintstones Chewables because they’re delicious.

Snoring suppressants. So let me get this straight: You put a strip of tape that looks suspiciously like a simple band-aid on the bridge of your nose and that’s supposed to stop you from snoring? And they’re only… how much? You can ask my wife — these don’t work. Smacking your bedmate in the head is much more effective. Cutting it down to 32 beers a night before you go to bed may also help.

Blank DVDs (and yes) Digital Cassettes. I’m assuming CVS is targeting AOL internet subscribers to move these items. Or the people who are driving around in circles and wondering where that dang Blockbuster store went to. I guess there are those that have never heard of Spotify, Netflix, Dropbox or Google Drive and haven’t given themselves up to the hell of recurring monthly fees. Hmmm… smart people, actually.

A1 Steak Sauce. CVS actually sells A1 Steak Sauce. Who is buying this? Are you running into the 24 hour CVS down the street to pick up some soap, toothpaste and a bottle of A1 Steak Sauce?

Body wash. Hello to the biggest scam of the 21st century. My kids go through a bottle a week. This is madness. “Body Wash” is just another term for “super-expensive soap.” Get a bar of Irish Spring for $ .39 and it’ll last for a month. Just pluck off the hairs each time and you’re good to go. Simple.

Disposable cameras (and film too). Other than fashion week are people still using actual cameras? I’ve got ten photos of my family (and a thousand photos of my dog) on my iPhone. Who’s still buying cameras?

Axe Deodorant. My sons seriously think that if they use Axe deodorant they will have success with the ladies. Ah, the power of advertising. The reality is that they carry my genes. A case of Axe isn’t going to change that predicament anytime soon. CVS is only contributing to this heinous deceit.

Faihaven Health Countboost for Men. These are dietary supplements that are supposed to increase the sperm count in men. My suggestion is to take a flight to Orlando on the first day of school vacation. By the time you arrive you’ll be tossing the Countboost for Men out the window and looking up vasectomy specialists in the area. CVS, let’s just save these guys the trouble, shall we?

Kiss Nail Artist Airbrush Style Nail Stickers. Let’s see… $ .02 to make. $ 2.99 to sell. Nice! As a father of a teenage daughter I am pleading with CVS to stop selling these. I pay more for stickers than I did to wallpaper our guest bathroom.

Fluttery Butterfly Pillow Pets. Really? This is what society has come to? We can’t just have regular pillows anymore? They have to be in the shape of butterflies and other pets? CVS, is this really something you should be encouraging? Must we give Vladimir Putin any more reasons to make fun of us?

Canon Ink Cartridges. These things are worse than cigarettes. You pay $ 99 for a printer and every two weeks you’re buying a $ 30 cartridge to feed its insatiable appetite for ink. This is like heroin and I demand that CVS put a stop to this now.

Jujubees Candy. Anti-semitic. Yeah, that’s right. Any way you say it. And the reference to “bees” like there’s some kind of honey — Rosh Hashana connection? Oh we know you’re game, CVS. As a member of the Hebrew persuasion I’m shocked that these are being sold and I know I’ve got my dentist’s backing on this. His name is Abramowitz, by the way.

Cascade Dishwasher Detergent. Silly people! Don’t you know that Cascade Complete is way, way better than the regular Cascade. I mean, what a difference! Wow. What a shine. Actually… I’m being total serious here. You won’t believe it.
