Android Pie-ready Pixel phones are on sale on Amazon starting at $219

Android Pie Download Released

Google announced on Monday that Android 9.0 P will officially be called Android Pie. More importantly, the final version of Android Pie has been released! While Apple fans get an iOS update that is mostly just bug fixes and refinements this year, Android Pie is packed full of new features. The problem, of course, is that most Android phones won’t get Android Pie anytime soon even though it was just released. Each manufacturer has to rebuild its software for each phone that gets the Android Pie update, and that takes… well… forever. If you want Pie right now, you’ll need one of a handful of phones that are compatible with Google’s new release.

You have a few good options. First off, Amazon is selling refurbished Google Pixel phones in white for just $ 219.45 today, and the black version is just a few bucks more at $ 234.49. If you don’t want a refurb even though they’re guaranteed, you can get a new Pixel for $ 313. Refurbished Pixel XL phones start at $ 249, and new new Pixel XL phones are available for just under $ 400.

Want newer phones that’ll run Pie? Pixel 2 refurbs cost $ 579 right now on Amazon, and Pixel 2 XL refurbs will set you back $ 639. Finally, you can order the Essential Phone PH-1, which is the only non-Google phone to get the Android Pie update today, for just $ 329.99.

You’ll find links to all those phones listed below, and remember that refurbs are only available in limited quantities so many of the models we’ve listed here will probably sell out at those prices, or sell out all together. As for getting Android 9.0 Pie on your new Pixel or Essential phone once you get it, you can start right here on Google’s blog.

Google slapped with $5 billion fine by EU for Android antitrust breach

TwitterFacebook

European antitrust regulators have fined Google with a 4.34 billion euro ($ 5.04 billion) fine for abusing its position in the smartphone market to increase the dominance of its search engine, the European Commission announced in a statement Wednesday.

Google was ordered to stop the practice within 90 days or face further penalty payments of up to 5% of the average daily global turnover of its parent company, Alphabet.

European regulators say Google has required manufacturers to pre-install the Google Search app and Chrome app as a condition for licensing Google’s Play Store. The company also made payments to “large manufacturers and mobile network operators” in order for them to exclusively pre-install the Google Search app on their devices. Finally, Google has prevented manufacturers wishing to pre-install Google apps from selling “even a single smart mobile device” running on alternative, non-Google-approved versions of Android, the regulators have found.  Read more…

Google could face yet another multi-billion-dollar fine in Europe, this one for Android

Android Antitrust Fine

About a year ago, Google received a massive antitrust fine in Europe for abusing its search dominance. The EU decided Google should pay €2.42 billion for its transgressions or about $ 2.7 billion. That was more than double what Intel got a few years before that.

To celebrate the one-year anniversary of that fine, the EU is about to deliver a new multi-billion dollar blow to Google, and this time around it might be a more significant one, because it’s about Android.

Why the iPhone X notch design looks better than Android copycats

iPhone X Vs Android

When Apple first introduced the iPhone X, the design was met with its fair share of controversy. Though everyone appreciated the device’s edgeless display, it was hard for many people to wrap their minds around the unseemly notch. Sure, there was no way for Apple to embed the device’s video and Face ID components underneath the display, but many wondered why Apple simply didn’t choose to hide the notch by making the flaps to the left and right of the image sensor black. Instead, Apple all but instructed developers and users to fully embrace the notch.

A week or two after its release, it became overwhelmingly clear that the uproar surrounding the iPhone X notch was overblown. For a vast majority of users, the notch, though perhaps annoying at first, quickly faded into the background and became a non-factor. Before long, we even started seeing a slew of Android handset manufacturers start to copy the iPhone X design, right down to the notch itself. To this point, just a few weeks ago a photo featuring 20 Android handsets with iPhone X-style notch designs began making the rounds.

Nothing But Respect for My President: Android Abe Lincoln

Philip K. Dick’s We Can Build You is a Cyrano de Bergerac story. The two lovers are schizophrenics, and the part of Cyrano is played by a robotic replica of Abraham Lincoln. It is the only novel ever written to feature the sentence, “I’m talking to Abraham Lincoln and finding out how to end our relationship forever.”

Written around the Civil War centennial in 1962, We Can Build You is not quite cyberpunk. Lincoln isn’t quite as cool as replicant Rachael in Blade Runner, and our narrator Louis Rosen is definitely no Harrison Ford. He’s an aging schmoe in a near-future world who works for a piano manufacturer that takes a detour into the replica business. Their idea: Civil War replicas! Beginning by recreating Lincoln’s grouchy but dutiful Secretary of War, Edwin M. Stanton, the company then shoot the moon by resurrecting Lincoln himself. But they can’t find a market for their Civil War roleplay, and Rosen falls in love with Pris Frauenzimmer, the schizophrenic and sociopathic teenage designer of the replicas, and one of the nastier entries in Dick’s long line of ice queens.

Somehow, Lincoln becomes Rosen’s legal counsel, personal guide, and life coach. The president’s famed wisdom and savvy are there, but Dick brings him into the novel only to then almost entirely ignore race, history, and politics. Who on earth is this Abraham Lincoln?

Face ID will only come to Android phones next year, but it won’t be the same as the iPhone X

Face ID on Android

A report a few days ago said that Apple has a two-year lead on Android rivals when it comes to the adoption of advanced 3D face-scanning technologies. Many Android device makers may be in a hurry to copy the iPhone X look and feel, and we’ve seen dozens of notch clones already, but these notch bezels won’t house TrueDepth-like cameras.

New reports say that Android device makers will have to wait one more year to deploy devices with 3D-sensing capabilities. When these devices arrive, they might not be Galaxy or Pixel phones. And they might not even launch in international markets at first.

Good lord, Android phone makers, please just stop

LG G7 Release Date

Seriously, LG, this is just embarrassing. We know small China-based smartphone makers are busy churning out iPhone X copycats as quickly as they can (or should we say Essential PH-1 copycats, as some crazy Android fanboys would have you believe). We also know that some larger China- and Taiwan-based companies are jumping on the copycat bandwagon. Huawei’s upcoming P20 flagship phone features a notch cut out of the top of the display as well as a vertically oriented camera array on the back, and the Asus Zenfone 5 is also a spitting image of Apple’s tenth-anniversary iPhone.

But now, if a new report out of South Korea is accurate, LG reportedly plans to move forward and release its iPhone X clone that some people thought had been canceled.

The Story of Android 21 in ‘Dragon Ball FighterZ’

Dragon Ball FigtherZ‘s story is far more than a rehash of past arcs. On top of being a magnificent fighting game, it provides a long, decent story mode that explains bringing together all your favourite characters into one time and place. It also gives everyone a common enemy: Android 21.

She’s fearsome both mentally and physically. Android 21 can create other androids, and manipulate them. She possesses the scientific capacity to dampen everyone’s powers, and graft an extra soul onto someone’s body. Perhaps most scary is how reminiscent of Majin Buu she is, in that she can turn powerful beings into tasty treats, eating them and gaining their power.

‘Dragon Ball FighterZ’ Review: This New Challenger is Quite Competitive

Interestingly, we get three different versions of the Android 21 tale. The way these are laid out is slightly open to interpretation. They can be viewed as separate stories, or perhaps going back in time to get a better result. Each arc begins with a soul — in this case, the player — being trapped inside someone’s body. First Goku, then Frieza, and then Android 18.

There are however connections between the three arcs. Motivations in one might justify actions in the other. This is why Android 21’s arc might be considered the final and “true” arc.

Warning: Below this line are spoilers for Dragon Ball FighterZ‘s Story Mode. Proceed at your own risk.

Super Warrior Arc

The first and shortest version of Dragon Ball FigherZ‘s story begins with Goku waking up to realise his powers are gone. Beerus and Whis arrive to explain there are mysterious “waves” sapping the abilities from powerful fighters. Goku can’t fly or charge up. He’s as good as a mortal human.

The next realisation is that there are clones of every fighter wandering around the planet. They have the same abilities and power of their likenesses. Each clone is an opportunity to defeat oneself, and Goku relishes the challenge.

Meet the ‘Dragon Ball FighterZ’ Beta Roster

In a key moment, Goku and Krillin come across a bruised and beaten Android 18. In scientist garb, Android 21 is looking after her, and says the nearby villain Cell is responsible for hurting her. This is enough for Krillin to launch into a rage.

Later it is revealed that Android 21 was cleverly pitting the two sides against each other while she gained enough power to take them both on. Android 18 was fighting Cell on Android 21’s orders. While she tries to blame the Red Ribbon Army for the clones, we find out Android 21 simply needed enough fighters to eat to gain supremacy.

By the time she reveals her true form, it’s too late.

Goku begins saving as many allies as possible and fighting clones to increase the abilities of the soul within him. While the Saiyans and their allies are out building a force to stop her, Android 21 manages to consume Cell, Frieza and his lackeys.

Android 21 scientist donut
That used to be a warrior.

By this point, she’s eaten so many warriors she outclasses anyone individually.

After confronting her one last time, Goku uses Instant Transmission to travel to the realm of the Elder Kai so Earth won’t be damaged in the fight. Android 21 takes the bait.

After a tousle, it takes each hero’s iconic blast to take her down. Kamehameha is combined with Destructo-disc, combined with Masenko, and so on. Even Majin Buu’s “turn into chocolate.” The combination of energies is enough to dissolve Android 21 — at substantial damage to the planet they’re on.

In a final comment down the barrel of the camera, Whis hints that there might be more to the story and if the player isn’t satisfied they should look for answers.

Enemy Warrior Arc

In this version of the story, the player’s soul is inside Frieza — who is none too happy to be sharing his body.

Frieza’s primary motivation is gaining power. He has to defeat as many clones as possible to “sync” with the soul inside of him, and defeat those who would subjugate (or eat) him. Somehow, his rival villain Cell has managed to bend the soul inside him to his will. You — the player — are not so easily dominated.

Frieza defeats Goku soul
Frieza tries commanding the soul to cooperate and kill Goku

Throughout the arc, we’re led to believe that Android 16 has betrayed Android 21, perhaps because of her power. She’s aware of this however, and is intentionally setting him up to fail with suicide missions.

This arc is also interesting because there are moments when Frieza has the upper hand, and could indeed destroy Goku — but for the conscience of the soul within him. He needs the soul’s cooperation to use his powers. Without that, he just stands there motionless. A frozen Frieza.

This creates a bit of a negotiation between him and the player. As you can imagine, he detests every second of it and tries to frame it as him “allowing” you to have some input.

Frieza Android 21 Android 18 Krillin
Each arc has a different version of Krillin finding Android 18

Android 21 quickly becomes more powerful than any individual villain can handle though, so Frieza also needs to work together with Cell, and — heaven forbid — Vegeta. It takes a decent amount of verbal sparring, but the two eventually realise that united they stand, divided they fall.

It helps that Cell and Frieza witness first-hand what Android 21 can do to the clones. It’s effortless for her to turn them into candy and start munching.

In a final showdown, Frieza and Cell try to blast Android 21. In a curious move, Android 16 jumps in the way to save her. He’s rewarded for his efforts by Android 21 smashing him to bits with a giant orb. This significance of this isn’t understood until the next arc.

When it’s clear that Android 21’s regenerative powers are out of control, Bulma tries to technologically counter the debilitating waves affecting everyone. This has a negative effect on most of the fighters, but Frieza, Cell and Goku all return to 100%.

Android 21 super dash Majin
Android 21 gains power faster than Frieza or Cell can believe

It takes a simultaneous blast from all three of them to take her down, and the three argue over whose blast had a bigger effect. And of course, there’s no way these heroes and villains in the same spot are just going to walk away quietly.

The remaining fighters launch into an all-out battle that we don’t get to see, as the screen fades to black.

Android 21 Arc

This is the arc that might be interpreted as canon moving forward. It reveals the true motivations of Android 21, and fleshes out both her past and future. We’re presented with an Android 21 who is genuinely concerned about others, and the terrifying hunger within herself.

In this version of the tale, Android 18 is infused with the player’s soul. For some reason, the soul wouldn’t remain inside other candidates — Android 17 could only hold it for a minute or so.

Android 18 fights Cell but loses
Android 18 agrees to help out

Android 18 is enlisted to help Android 21 clear the planet of the clones and resurrected villains. Along the way, Android 21 is clearly struggling with something. Android 17 demands answers, and it’s revealed that she can barely contain her hunger. It’s only in this arc that we actually see Android 21 attempt to stop herself consuming people. We learn that the companions of Android 21 are helping her to manage her urges and find a cure.

Android 21 hungry weak
Android 21 has a weak moment in managing her hunger

When one fight finishes, she loses control and tries to eat Cell. It’s too much for Android 16 to stop her, so the player’s soul has to transfer to Android 21 to help her control her urges.

While the player’s soul is inside of Android 21, it notices some internal conflict. There’s another soul inside of her causing trouble. We realise there’s a soft and hard side to Android 21, and it’s the soft side that created this version of Android 16 because he is an identical copy of her son.

Android 16

All of a sudden, it’s clear why Android 16 sacrificed himself in the Enemy Warrior Arc. Despite the evil inside Android 21, he’s trying to save what’s good.

The softer side is currently dominant — but not for long.

The evil Android 21 quickly becomes more powerful

Later on, this conflict reaches a breaking point. When Android 16 tries to stop his “mother” from murdering Cell, she launches an orb at him, killing him instantly. Android 21 is so torn over this she literally splits into two versions of herself. One is capable of self control and mastering her hunger in the interest of decency. The other has completely given into her urges, and seeks to consume the powers of everyone else.

The obvious problem here is that the evil Android 21 quickly becomes more powerful than the good version. Especially after she eats Cell. In the next scene, she shows just how more powerful she is than in the other arcs.

They corner Android 21 in front of the machine creating the mysterious waves — who promptly swallows the remote capable of switching them off. Goku has to quickly use Instant Transmission to help his friends, but doing so in front of Android 21 allows her to learn the ability instantly, just as Buu did.

Once again, Goku brings the fight off-planet so Earth won’t be damaged. But this time, during the final fight, it becomes clear the only thing strong enough to beat evil Android 21 is a Spirit Bomb. The other fighters lend Goku their strength, but she can still barely hold it off.

The good Android 21 tackles her evil doppleganger and both take the bomb’s full damage. The remaining fighters acknowledge that she sacrificed herself for them, and start discussing how they could possibly resurrect her.

ENTERTAINMENT DEAL UPDATE:

How Dragon Ball FighterZ’s Android 21 Could Fit Within the Dragon Ball Canon

With Dragon Ball FighterZ rapidly approaching, fans will not only experience the first truly technical Dragon Ball fighting game, but will also be treated to a brand-new character in the mysterious Android 21.

Designed by series creator Akira Toriyama, Android 21 is one of the few female characters to appear in FighterZ. She seems to be the main antagonist of the game’s story mode. Information about this new character is still pretty scarce. But considering her background, design, and her appearance in promotional material, it’s not too difficult to speculate how she might fit into the broader Dragon Ball series.

A Scientist First and Foremost

Another brilliant scientist joins the Dragon Ball roster.

Android 21 is a member of and researcher for the Red Ribbon Army. This militaristic criminal organization first appeared in the original Dragon Ball series. The group strove to collect the Dragon Balls to obtain world domination. But not really, as the leader of the Red Ribbon Army – Commander Red – secretly wanted to use the wish to become taller. The Red Ribbon Army Saga helped Dragon Ball develop into the series it is today by introducing more sci-fi elements and making it less focused on mystical adventures or martial arts.

As a scientist for the Red Ribbon Army, Android 21 more than likely played a role in developing the organization’s iconic Androids or some of the other super weapons found in the organization. As the story mode features corrupted versions of characters from the series, she may have spent her time working for RR developing the means to create these copies.

A Wife and a Mother?

There’s a lot of smoke for there to be no fire.

There’s also a very good chance that Android 21 is the mother of Android 16 and the wife of Android 20 – Dr Gero. The evil Dr. Gero created the majority of the Red Ribbon Androids and even turned himself into one, so he could exact his revenge on Goku for destroying the Army. Android 16 is the android version of Gero’s son, who died in a battle; though some fans theorize he may have died when Goku attacked the Army’s headquarters (Muscle Tower).

It’s clear from the promotional material that 21 has some kind of relationship with 16, and it would make sense if she were his mother becausethe other half of 16’s parentage is still unknown. 21 being the wife of Dr. Gero could also be a great chance to give Gero a bit more background and motivation, as he never had much time to establish himself in Dragon Ball Z.

A Murderous Machine

Revenge may be her motivation.

Even if she isn’t related to Androids 16 and 20, it’s clear that she has some kind of close relationship with them. It seems like she rebuilt Android 16 and may have tried to do the same for Dr. Gero before realizing it is impossible with his brain destroyed. Her attempts at killing Goku and company in the game might be revenge against them for letting 16 die to Cell, and her husband’s death at the hands of Androids 17 and 18.

Alternatively, she could have had a less than pleasant relationship with Dr. Gero and these attacks against the Z Fighters could be her attempting to surpass him. While the motivations behind her villainy are sure to remain a mystery right up until the game’s launch, it’s safe to say that it will almost certainly tie back into her relationship with Gero and 16.

The Most Compelling Questions

What will hopefully be revealed, but may never.

Outside of the plot of Dragon Ball FighterZ and her role in it, Android 21 inspires a lot of questions. Is she really an android, or is she a cyborg like Androids 17 and 18? Was she made by Dr. Gero, did he turn her into an android, or did she turn herself into one? Can she also absorb energy like Gero or does she have her own unique powers?

At least some of these questions may be answered in Dragon Ball FighterZ, while others may remain a mystery forever. Android 21 has quickly become a hotly debated character, and hopefully, she’ll receive a satisfying story and background within the game. Maybe we’ll get lucky and she’ll even become a playable character! FighterZ, and Dragon Ball as a whole, could really use a few more lady fighters.

iPhone X vs. Galaxy Note 8

The iPhone X brings to the iOS ecosystem a brand new trick that, in time, will probably find its way to other iOS and macOS devices. Face ID is the iPhone X’s signature feature, a facial recognition system that’s more sophisticated than anything available from the competition, and a lot more secure.

Some of the Android fans who have used facial recognition on Samsung phones like the Galaxy Note 8 and Galaxy S8 will rightly say that Apple hasn’t invented the feature. They may even roll their eyes incredulously if you tell them Apple’s way is better and will probably be copied by their favorite Android device maker. Those people should really read this iPhone X review from an Android blog.

Wi-Fi’s Main Security Protocal “Kracked” Major Cause For Concern For Android & Linux Users

KRACK Wi-Fi hack

Damn now we can’t even trust wi-fi anymore? Asking for the wi-fi password maybe dangerous even more so if you are an Android or Linux user since a protocol that governs all modern wi-fi routers has been found to have a major vulnerability.

When you’re setting your home wi-fi, your network is “protected” or secured by a WPA2 (Wi-Fi Protected Access 2) and given the option of using a pre-shared key. It basically prevents your neighbors from seeing what sites you may visit or mooch off your internet service.

WPA2 replaced WEP due to it being flawed back in 2003, but it looks like we are going to need a new form of protection. A researcher by the name of Mathy Vanhoef revealed the major flaw in WPA2 and has named it KRACK (Key Reinstallation Attacks).  So what does it do? Basically, this flaw allows “man-in-the-middle attacks” opening up your network for ransomware and the injection of other malicious attacks on your computers.

Also, your most important information like bank accounts, credit cards, passwords, photos, emails and anything else you save to your computer is fair game to the hackers. If you are an Android or Linux user, you should be worried because KRACK is highly effective against devices that use those operating systems.

There is some good news in this story though, KRACK maybe highly potent but it requires the user to be closer to a router’s signal to connect to it. There also patches for vulnerability being rolled out.  Also, the “handshake” between your computer and a website you visit is just one precaution against those who mean to do you harm. So secure https sites are for the most part still secure when you visit them.

KRACK is still a proximity vulnerability requiring the hacker to be close your router so you can’t be hacked from anywhere around the globe. Still, with news of all these major breaches and hacks coming to light every day it still is a cause for concern.

Can’t these hackers be more productive and find Trump’s tax returns or hack Sallie Mae and wipeout student debt? Just saying.
