Kevin Smith Reveals 43-Lb Weight Loss After ‘Massive’ Heart Attack

Looking good! Kevin Smith updated fans on his health and revealed that he’s close to his goal of losing 50 lbs since suffering a heart attack in February.

“Today, I am down a total of 43 pounds! Only 7 more pounds until I’ve shed the 50 my doctor told me to lose following the heart attack,” the Weight Watchers ambassador, 47, captioned an Instagram pic on Wednesday, June 13, crediting magician Penn Jillette and Ray Cronise for kickstarting his weight loss, and Weight Watchers for helping him slim down. “This #wwambassador is now at the absolute thinnest I’ve been since I finished high school! And while I may look a little better, I FEEL f—king fantastic! It’ll be a few weeks, but I’m ready to lose that final 7 points! And when I hit my goal, I’ll let you know where I started.”

Smith made headlines in February after revealing that he experienced a “massive” heart attack backstage at an L.A. comedy show. He recently showed off his weight loss in May, telling his 1.2 million Instagram followers that he’s lost 32 lbs since the traumatic experience.

The filmmaker previously opened up about his weight loss journey exclusively to Us Weekly back in April.

“For me, food was not like fuel. It wasn’t, like, you eat food because it powers your body and you move on,” he said at the time. “I’m an American who grew up in the ‘70s when America figured out, if we start putting more sugar in everything, they’ll buy it. So sugar starts showing up in the bread and everything.”

Smith added that he didn’t think he was having a heart attack when it happened, given that he lost 85 lbs three years ago after cutting sugar out of his diet entirely. “I was sweaty, I thought I couldn’t catch my breath, I felt nauseated, but I didn’t think of those as heart attack symptoms,” he explained. “I couldn’t piece it together, but that’s me being incredibly stupid because my mom has two stents in her heart and my father died of a massive heart attack at 67.”

Former FCC Chairman Claims Ajit Pai Lied About DDoS Attack on Net Neutrality Forum

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai lied when he claimed a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack brought down the agency’s comments system in 2014, his predecessor says.

It’s the latest salvo in the controversy over why the FCC’s public comment forum crashed in the middle of the debate over net neutrality rules last year. Pai claimed it was attacked by hackers who deliberately overloaded the servers (a DDoS attack). He doubled down on his claim by saying that the FCC was the victim of a similar attack the last time net neutrality was considered in 2014. And, Pai claimed, the FCC covered it up.

Supporters of net neutrality rules, which Pai opposes, say the FCC is not coming clean about the real reason behind the crash. They argue it was likely a flood of comments supporting net neutrality, or even a simply technical glitch, that brought down the FCC system.

Earlier this week, former FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler said Pai’s statements about 2014 FCC site outage were false, Ars Technica reported. No attack was officially reported and there’s a good reason for that, according to Wheeler.

“FCC officials who were there at the time said it didn’t happen,” Wheeler said during a taping of the C-SPAN show, The Communicators, according to Axios. He added, “The independent IT contractors that were hired said it didn’t happen. So if it didn’t happen, it’s hard to have a coverup for something that didn’t happen.”

Adding fuel to the fire was a report from Gizmodo on Tuesday that internal emails confirmed that the FCC did not tell the truth about any alleged DDoS attack. The emails show that FCC officials made false claims of an attack to explain the problems with the comment system.

Since Wheeler’s allegation on Wednesday, the FCC has refused to take questions from reporters, and has prevented the release of records related to the issue through FOIA requests, citing the Trade Secrets Act.

UFC Star Conor McGregor Arrives at New York Courthouse After Bus Attack Arrest

Ultimate fighting star Conor McGregor has arrived at the courthouse. He had been brought out of a New York City police station in handcuffs after a backstage melee that forced the removal of three fights from UFC’s biggest card of the year.

McGregor, looking composed, held his chin up as he walked toward an unmarked police vehicle on Friday morning.

He did not acknowledge a throng of journalists or two onlookers who shouted messages of support.

Video footage appears to show the promotion’s most bankable star throwing a hand truck at a bus full of fighters after a Thursday news conference for UFC 223 at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center.

It was not immediately known if McGregor has an attorney who could comment on his behalf.

ENTERTAINMENT DEAL UPDATE:

The Conor McGregor Bus Attack Has Sent Shockwaves Through the UFC

Back on November 12, 2016, Conor McGregor was the undisputed face of the UFC, a global icon who could single-handedly grow mixed martial arts (MMA) to new heights around the world. That Saturday night, the charismatic, if profane, fighter from Ireland captivated a boisterous crowd at New York City’s Madison Square Garden, the site of some of the most legendary prizefights of all-time. He knocked out Eddie Alvarez to claim the lightweight crown.

The bout was signature moment for the UFC. The organization had fought a decades-long battle to end New York State’s ban on MMA, but here it was, finally, on Broadway. And Conor McGregor owned the marquee.

But just 18 short months after McGregor headlined the most important night in UFC history, a crazed McGregor attacked a bus filled with UFC fighters in a New York City loading block, putting him at risk of criminal prosecution. He assaulted the sport that made him millions, while endangering the safety of his fellow fighters.

In what UFC president Dana White called “the most disgusting thing that has ever happened in the history of this company,” McGregor and a group of associates stormed a New York City press event for an upcoming UFC fight, and hurled objects at a vehicle that was carrying UFC fighters to a nearby hotel. Several cameras captured the shocking incident: TMZ posted footage showing McGregor throwing a hand truck at a bus, shattering a window.

According to a police source, McGregor is wanted for questioning by the NYPD in relation to the incident, which occurred in the loading dock of the Barclays Center; the UFC 223 fight card is scheduled to take place there on Saturday. UFC fighter Michael Chiesa, who is on the card, was taken to the hospital with facial cuts. McGregor and the other men fled the scene before police arrived.

McGregor hadn’t fought in the UFC since that November 2016 fight in New York; last summer Floyd Mayweather beat McGregor in an intensely-hyped boxing match. On Wednesday, UFC president Dana White announced that the winner of Saturday’s fight between Max Holloway and Khabib Nurmagomedov would earn the lightweight championship belt, effectively stripping McGregor of his lightweight title. Early Thursday morning, McGregor tweeted “you’ll strip me of nothing,” before directing an highly offensive word towards, it’s reasonable to conclude, UFC officials.

But another incident may have drawn McGregor’s ire. Artem Lobov, a teammate of McGregor’s, was involved in a hotel scuffle earlier this week with Nurmagomedov. White told ESPN that Lobov was part of the crew that attacked the bus. (Lobov was supposed to fight Alex Caceres on Saturday but has been pulled from the event.)

No matter the motivation, McGregor’s antics were frightening, and utterly inexcusable. He could have seriously injured someone, or worse. An ESPN reporter asked White if he still wanted to be in business with McGregor. “Right now, absolutely not,” White responded. “Do you want to be in business with Conor McGregor right now?

A McGregor rep did not respond to a request for comment. November 2016, at Madison Square Garden, now seems so very long ago.

Kevin Smith: My heart attack was the best thing that ever happened to me

OHMYGOSSIP — Kevin Smith has dubbed his recent heart attack as the “best thing” that has ever happened to his health.
The 47-year-old director – who previously lost 90lbs in seven years – required emergency surgery when he was hospitalised last month after suffering a “widow-maker” heart attack.
After coming out the other side of his health scare, he is now determined to lose weight and become more healthy, and so now believes the ordeal was a good thing in terms of motivating him to get fit.
On Twitter on Friday (30.03.18), Kevin wrote: “Down 26 pounds today! Started March 8th and now 4 weeks later, I’ve lost a small child worth of weight! Doc told me to lose 50 pounds and I’m now over halfway to that goal! Ironically, this heart attack was the best thing that ever happened to my health! (sic)”
Kevin’s weight loss is largely thanks to Penn Jillette’s book ‘Presto!’, which chronicled his 100lb weight loss, and advice from dietary nutrition researcher Ray Cronise.
The ‘Clerks’ helmer tweeted recently: “I’m officially down 20 pounds as of this morning! 20 pounds in 13 days & my blood pressure is amazing. How did this happen? @pennjillette & his book “Presto” turned me on to @RayCronise and his program at http://justsides.com My Doc said lose 50 pounds. 20 down, 30 more to go! (sic)”
The ‘Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back’ helmer was forced to cancel a show in California because of his terrifying ordeal, and later explained on Twitter that if he hadn’t rushed himself to the hospital, he wouldn’t have survived.
He wrote at the time: “After the first show this evening, I had a massive heart attack. The Doctor who saved my life told me I had 100% blockage of my LAD artery (aka “the Widow-Maker”).
“If I hadn’t canceled show 2 to go to the hospital, I would’ve died tonight. But for now, I’m still above ground! (sic)”

‘Fear the Walking Dead’: The Best Weapon to Have in a Zombie Attack

The world of Fear the Walking Dead and its sister show The Walking Dead is a very dangerous place.

Threats lurk around every corner, whether in undead or human form. So what’s the very best weapon to arm yourself with during the zombie apocalypse? Turns out one stands out among the rest: the axe. Madison Clark carried a hatchet in Season 3 of Fear the Walking Dead, and Rick Grimes uses a handaxe in the current season of The Walking Dead.

An axe is a powerful slashing weapon that only requires one hand to wield (unlike, say, Michonne’s katana). It has greater reach and force than a short blade (like a dagger). There’s also the utilitarian value as well, chopping wood, rope, etc.

Whereas knives may be easier to find, they made not be able to penetrate bone or armor as well as an ax. Whereas a knife can stab and slash, axes are generally more effective. Axes do have the danger of getting lodged, but with enough momentum, an ax should be able to cleanly slice through.

Live to Fight Another Day

Sometimes it’s not about fighting the undead, but getting away from them. The professional bodyguards over at Draken Security recommend putting as much distance between you and your assailant as possible, with a well-placed shove or even better, a kick.

And if you want to really get range on your enemies, try a projectile weapon like a recurve bow. Unfortunately, bows require ammunition, light/visibility, and have a minimum range. The last thing you want to have is a zombie closing in close and being unable to let an arrow fly, or worse, run out of arrows.

Check out some more zombie fighting techniques in the video above, and be sure to watch Season 3 of Fear the Walking Dead, on available now on home entertainment.

Season 4 of Fear premieres this April.

Top Triathlete Brutally Injured in Chainsaw Attack on His Way to Training Session

(JOHANNESBURG) — Assailants in South Africa attacked a top national triathlete who was cycling to a training session and cut into his legs with a blunt saw, causing severe injuries, an athletic director said Wednesday.

Mhlengi Gwala, 27, was undergoing surgery after the attack which occurred before dawn on Tuesday in the coastal city of Durban, said Dennis Jackson, director of the elite athlete program for KwaZulu-Natal province.

Several attackers pulled Gwala off his bicycle as he cycled up a steep hill and sawed into his right calf, damaging muscle, nerves and bone, according to Jackson, who spoke by phone to the triathlete about the ordeal. They missed a main artery and surgeons are confident they can save the leg, Jackson said.

Mhlengi Gwala—Facebook

The attackers also started sawing into Gwala’s left leg before fleeing, enabling the athlete to crawl to a road and flag down a passing car to take him to a hospital.

The grisly attack has alarmed athletes in Durban who routinely get up in the early morning darkness to train when few people are on the roads, and there was no immediate explanation for why Gwala was targeted. The athlete had offered his cell phone, wallet and bicycle to the assailants, who still went for his legs and were speaking in a language that Gwala could not understand, Jackson said.

“I have never heard of any enemies that he may have,” he said. “He is a wonderful ambassador for the sport.”

Gwala became an excellent athlete after overcoming drug and alcohol addictions, representing South Africa at international competitions in Chicago in 2015 and in the Netherlands last year, Jackson said. The athlete’s long term goals were to compete in half and whole ironman triathlons, which include swimming, cycling and running.

South Africa’s deputy sports minister, Gert Oosthuizen, described the attack on the “star athlete” as “totally unacceptable” and said police are investigating.

Triathlete Henri Schoeman, who won bronze for South Africa at the Rio Olympics in 2016, said he wishes Gwala the best on his path to recovery.

“How safe are we on SA roads?” Schoeman said on Twitter.

5 Things We Want to See in ‘Attack on Titan 2’

Hajime Isayama’s Attack on Titan franchise has garnered a massive fan base throughout its manga, anime, novels, and live-action films. With Attack on Titan 2 nearing release, we wanted to take a moment and share five things we’d like to see in the upcoming sequel.

Deeper Dive into Characters

Attack on Titan Characters Eren, Armin, Levi, and Mikasa.
Adding more characters doesn’t necessarily mean more content.

We know that Attack on Titan 2 is going to boast a much larger cast of characters than the original. While adding more characters could in theory increase the number of hours players pour into the game (have to max them out, after all), there’s no guarantee that players will want to do that.

We’ve seen stories about MikasaEren, and others explored throughout the anime but there are still plenty that we haven’t. We’re hoping that Attack on Titan 2 will finally give us that deeper look into some of our other favorites.

Colossal Titan over Wall Maria
Colossal titans are just the tip of the iceberg — or so we hope.

Titans, Titans, Titans. We will undoubtedly be slaying hundreds of these giants in multiple variants. And sure, titans already come in plenty of shapes and sizes.

We want even more of the special titans, and possibly some created just for the game.  We’re not expecting them to go off the rails and introduce something out of character. Though based on new variants shown in the second season, we wouldn’t be upset if AoT2 introduced something more creative.

Improved Multiplayer

Christa, inside the walls attacking a Titan
The more options for multiplayer the better.

The first game’s multiplayer is about as standard as multiplayer experiences come. That’s not a major downer, since it was still one of the best components of the game. Having it there only served to improve the experience.

This time we know they are adding even more to the previously included multiplayer options. The new four versus four annihilation mode challenges groups to see which can take down more titans. Hopefully, this is just one of the new modes that we will be included at launch or shortly after.

More Maneuvers and Abilities

Mikasa Ackerman Attack on Titan
Hopefully the sequel gives us more options in combat.

The first game showcased the natural talents of a few characters such as Mikasa’s consecutive strikes, or Armin’s ability to command NPC’s. These are two of the more unique skills that can be earned in the first game. While a few other skills were of this caliber, the majority were generic or shared between most of the roster.

For the upcoming sequel, we want to see even more variety in these unique skill types. Optimally we’d like to see a unique skill per character. However, with the new 35+ character roster size we’d settle for just less repetition amongst the cast.

What if Scenarios

attack on titan season 2 teaser
Levels shouldn’t have to only be confined to the source material.

We know that Attack on Titan 2 will chronicle the storyline of the first two seasons. And while it’s often a game’s duty to remain faithful to its source material, this shouldn’t limit developers to only creating content based on that.

There have been examples in the past where developers have taken the liberty to add creative what-if scenarios. These could range from a variety of things like fighting off endless swarms or luring titans away from the walls.

All up, the first game was somewhat a surprise success, and served as an effective proof of concept. Now, Attack on Titan 2 has our undivided attention. If it can capture that magical style of fun in a more feature-rich experience, it could be one of the best games of the year.

The Mom Who Let Cruz Stay Confronted Him, Wanted to Strangle Him, After School Attack

The family who let the Florida shooter stay in their home after his adopted mother died last year have spoken out about what he was like to live with—and how they wanted to “strangle” him when they saw him after he shot 17 of his schoolmates dead last week.

James and Kimberly Snead invited Nikolas Cruz—a friend of their son— to live their home after his adopted mother, Lynda Cruz, died of pneumonia in November of last year. Speaking on ABC’s Good Morning America on Monday, accompanied by their lawyer, the Sneads described Cruz as “polite” and said he followed house rules “to a T.”

The couple insisted they had no indication that Cruz was planning a mass shooting at his high school and said they were unaware of his sinister Instagram accounts where he posted about his obsession with guns and his fondness for killing animals. The FBI has been heavily criticized for failing to follow up tips about Cruz’s intentions.

‘My Daughters Are the Heroes.’ Father of 3 Victims Apologizes for Trying to Attack Larry Nassar

(CHARLOTTE, Mich.) — A distraught father seething over sexual abuse suffered by three daughters tried to attack former sports doctor Larry Nassar in a Michigan courtroom after a judge rejected his request to confront the “demon” in a locked room, a stunning rush that reflected the anguish felt by parents who trusted him with their children.

Randall Margraves was blocked by an attorney, tackled by sheriff’s deputies and hauled out of court Friday. He later apologized, saying he had lost control. Eaton County Judge Janice Cunningham said there was “no way” she would fine him or send him to jail under her contempt-of-court powers.

“I don’t know what it would be like to stand there as a father and know that three of your girls were injured physically and emotionally by somebody sitting in a courtroom. I can’t imagine that,” the judge said.

Nonetheless, she added, it is “not acceptable that we combat assault with assault.”

The incident occurred during the third and final sentencing hearing for Nassar, who has admitted to sexually assaulting girls under the guise of medical treatment. This case focuses on his work at Twistars, an elite gymnastics club southwest of Lansing.

Nassar, 54, already will spend the rest of his life in prison. He was sentenced last week to 40 to 175 years in prison for assaults at Michigan State University and his home and was ordered in December to spend 60 years in a federal prison for child pornography crimes.

Nassar pleaded guilty to molesting nine victims in Eaton and Ingham counties, but the courts have been open to anyone who says she was assaulted during his decades of work at Michigan State, Twistars and USA Gymnastics, which trains Olympians. More than 200 accusers so far have spoken or submitted statements in the two counties, and at least 80 percent have agreed to be publicly identified.

Margraves’ dramatic move occurred after he listened to two of his daughters speak in court for 10 minutes. Lauren Margraves, a college student, said her parents were “filled with regret” because they took three daughters to see Nassar for sports injuries.

“I see the look in their faces and I know they want to be able to do something but they can’t,” she told Nassar. “The guilt they have will never go away. All this is because of you.”

Her father then stepped up and asked the judge if she would grant him “five minutes in a locked room with this demon.” Cunningham declined and also turned down his request for “one minute.” That is when Randall Margraves rushed toward Nassar.

There were gasps and tears in the courtroom. Assistant Attorney General Angela Povilaitis turned to the gallery and told families to “use your words,” not violence.

“This is letting him have this power over us,” she said. “We cannot behave like this.”

During a return to court, Margraves told the judge that he just snapped. He said he had not known what exactly his daughters were going to say about their abuse.

“I look over here and Larry Nassar’s shaking his head, no, like it didn’t happen. … I’m embarrassed,” Margraves said of his conduct. “I’m not here to upstage my daughters. I’m here to help them heal.”

About 30 more people spoke in person, by video or had statements read after the incident. The case will end Monday with final remarks from the prosecutor, defense and Nassar, followed by the judge’s sentence. Nassar faces a minimum of 25 to 40 years in prison.

At a news conference, Margraves repeated his apology and insisted he’s “no hero.”

“My daughters are the heroes, and all the victims and the survivors of this terrible atrocity,” he said.

Melissa Alexander Vigogne, who traveled from France to speak, said she was surprised that an attack had not been attempted earlier.

“It’s not that that’s how we should respond. But it’s truly understandable — the amount of pain that we’ve all gone through,” Vigogne said outside court.

Sheriff Tom Reich said his officers will investigate what happened in court and send a report to the local prosecutor.

The judge started the day by addressing comments made by a Nassar lawyer who said she had doubts about the large number of women and girls who say they were assaulted by Nassar. Cunningham called Shannon Smith’s remarks “unfortunate” and said Nassar did not authorize them.

Smith told Detroit radio station WWJ that it is “really unfortunate” if some people stepped forward only because of all the recent attention. Nassar released a statement saying Smith’s comments were a distraction and that his accusers’ remarks “have pierced my soul.”

Many of Nassar’s accusers have blamed Michigan State, USA Gymnastics and the U.S. Olympic Committee for not doing more earlier to stop him. The USOC announced Friday that it hired a law firm to conduct an independent investigation. And the coordinator of the women’s national team for USA Gymnastics, Valeri Liukin, said he was stepping down.

Egypt Blames Islamic State for Mosque Attack as Death Toll Tops 300

Egyptian officials on Saturday said gunmen in a brutal attack on a North Sinai mosque a day earlier were carrying an Islamic State flag. “They numbered between 25 and 30, carrying the Daesh flag and took up positions in front of the mosque door and its 12 windows with automatic rifles,” Egypt’s public prosecutor’s office said in a statement, using the Arabic term for Islamic State. Gunmen set off a bomb before blocking the mosque’s windows and doors and firing inside as people tried to flee, authorities said. The news came as the death toll climbed to 305 people, including 27 children. Another 128 people were wounded. Egypt’s military said it carried out overnight airstrikes and raids on militants believed to be involved in the attack, the deadliest so far in the country’s modern history.

235 Killed in Bombing, Ambush Attack at Mosque in Egypt

At least 235 people were killed and more than 100 others were injured on Friday in a bomb and gun attack on a mosque in Egypt. The attack reportedly occurred as prayers were ongoing at a mosque in Al Rawdah in Egypt’s North Sinai province. The Associated Press reports that gunmen, in off-road vehicles, opened fire on mosque-goers as they were trying to flee after a bomb blast. CNN reported that the militants also opened fire on ambulances that were transporting the wounded out of the area. A spokesman for the country’s health ministry called it a terror attack, as Egyptian President Abdel Fatah el-Sisi has called for a three-day period of national mourning. ISIS affiliates have, in recent years, launched attacks throughout the country following the overthrow of former leader Mohammed Morsi. No group has claimed responsibility yet for Friday’s attack. President Trump has weighed in on the attack, writing on Twitter: “Horrible and cowardly terrorist attack on innocent and defenseless worshipers in Egypt. The world cannot tolerate terrorism, we must defeat them militarily and discredit the extremist ideology that forms the basis of their existence!”

The NYC attack shouldn’t lead to getting rid of the diversity lottery program

The NYC attack shouldn’t lead to getting rid of the diversity lottery program

The NYC attack shouldn’t lead to getting rid of the diversity lottery program

On Wednesday morning, President Trump tweeted that the New York City attacker arrived in the U.S. under the “diversity lottery program” and that his administration would seek to end it. But Trump is totally wrong about the diversity lottery program for a few reasons, the biggest one being that getting rid of the diversity lottery program wouldn’t have changed anything about the attack on Tuesday afternoon.

The Department of Homeland Security confirmed late Wednesday that the New York City attacker entered the U.S. in 2010 with a passport and a valid diversity immigrant visa, according to the Washington Post. But NYPD and law enforcement said in previous statements that he was radicalized after coming to the U.S., so for that very simple reason, changing the immigration policy wouldn’t have worked in this particular case. Aside from that, the diversity lottery program allows many immigrants to come to the U.S. who otherwise wouldn’t be able to, and closing those doors might not be the best thing for the country.

Trump said in a press conference, also Wednesday, that the diversity visa lottery program is not “nice.” “It sounds nice. It’s not nice. It’s not good,” he (sort of) explained. But it’s not like someone over at DHS spins some Bingo machine and randomly gives away free tickets to immigrants. It’s a lot more complicated than that.

The program was started in 1990 as a way to help immigrants come to the U.S. from countries that normally don’t have a lot of immigrants coming our way.

Recipients of the program come from countries that have fewer than 50,000 immigrants in the U.S. already and come from Africa, Asia, Europe, North America (other than Mexico), Oceania and South America, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean.

It’s supposed to fill in the gap for people who can’t get visas through employment or family connections. According to CNN, one million green cards are issued by the U.S. per year and last year, 45,664 of them were diversity visa recipients.

To even apply for the visa, they have to have at least a high school education or equivalent and have had at least two years of work experience that required training within five years of the application date. They also have to have an in-person interview and be “admissible” to the U.S., which means they have to disclose past criminal behavior, including associations with terrorists. They take fingerprint scans and require a medical check up, too.

Again, no one’s scratching some magic DHS lotto ticket in a foreign country and getting a free ride to the U.S.

It’s called a lottery because the odds of getting one, given the number of applicants, are worse than the odds of getting into Harvard University, according to Vice.

Trump wants to get rid of this path to citizenship entirely and make immigration solely “merit based.” But the requirements for a diversity visa are already pretty high. Instead of scrapping the program, the State department could also look into revising how they screen people coming in, especially since the political environment has changed a lot since President George H.W. Bush signed it into law.

There might be better ways to screen people, but blocking immigrants from smaller countries from coming here just because they already don’t have a job lined up or family members living somewhere in New Jersey just seems backwards. Think of all the talent and interesting human beings we’d be missing out on.

That being said, the diversity visa lottery program hasn’t always been popular and there have been a handful of terrorist plots associated with the program, though only Tuesday’s was fatal. The others are associated with the program only because there were very tangential actors in the plot who had the visa. Given the number of diversity visas given out every year, that seems more like probability than the visa program actual being a cause of terrorism.

Although the diversity visa lottery program was passed with bipartisan support back in 1990, there was a move by Democrats to overhaul immigration legislation back in 2013. Funny enough, New York Senator Chuck Schumer was a member the group who came up with an immigration reform package that would have eradicated the diversity visa program in the name of a 13-year pathway to citizenship for all immigrants.

On Wednesday, Trump seemed to have forgotten that part of immigration history, calling the diversity visa lottery a “Schumer beauty.” (Isn’t it nice to live in a world where the president erroneously blames the senator of the state that just experienced a terrorist attack? But anyway…)

Back in 2013, Politico reported that the bipartisan immigration reform bill would “revamp every corner of U.S. immigration law, establishing a 13-year pathway to citizenship for millions of undocumented immigrants, with several security benchmarks that have to be met before they can obtain a green card.” The reform bill would have also required a mandatory workplace verification system for employers and increase security on the borders.

Obama lauded the reform bill as a perfect example of compromise. The measure would not only increases security along the border, but requires a mandatory workplace verification system for employers, trying to ensure no jobs are given to immigrants who are not authorized to work in the United States. As with so many other pieces of bipartisan legislation during the Obama era, the bill died in Congress.

Immigration reform and national security are important, nuanced issues that should be dealt with by Congress. But we shouldn’t allow emotions to take over and implement policies such as Trump’s elusive “extreme vetting” program (what does that even mean?) because of one single instance. Given that the most recent terrorist attacks in the U.S. were perpetrated by people who were radicalized after they moved here. Getting rid of the diversity visa lottery doesn’t address that one, very important aspect of terror attacks that happen here.

EMPLOYMENT SEARCH UPDATE:

Spanish Police Thwart Second Attack

Officials in Spain have reportedly thwarted a second terror attack in the country, just hours after a van plowed through a crowd of people in Barcelona, killing 13 people and injuring dozens of others. The counterterrorism operation took place in Cambrils, which is near Barcelona, and at least five suspected terrorists were killed and one was arrested. Attackers reportedly attempted to hit pedestrians with a van in Cambrils, similar to how the Barcelona attack played out. “We are working on the hypothesis that terrorists killed in Cambrils would be related to the events registered in Barcelona and Alcanar,” a Catalan police account wrote on Twitter, referring to a home explosion that occurred Wednesday night in Alcanar that was initially deemed a gas explosion.

Who is Chris Brown?

Chris Brown is an American R&B singer and songwriter whose hit songs include Run It!, With You, Turn Up The Music and Fine China.

Although he has received critical acclaim for his music, Brown’s personal life has hit headlines just as much.

He pleaded guilty to felony for attacking ex-girlfriend Rihanna and is now set to be taken to court by another ex-girlfriend, Karrueche Tran, over domestic violence claims.

Tran claims the popstar kicked her down a flight of stairs, punched her in the stomach, threatened to shoot her and made death threats to her.

Nightclub photographer Bennie L. Vines also reportedly considered bringing charges against Brown after the singer allegedly punched him for taking photos during a promotional appearance.

While he was also arrested in a dramatic stand-off at his home in 2016 after beauty pageant winner Baylee Curran accused him of pointing a gun at her head.

When did he attack Rihanna?

Chris Brown and Rihanna were in a relationship from 2008-2009, having been friends before they became romantically involved.

Brown has described their relationship as volatile and claimed they were were always fighting.

A domestic violence case was brought against him in 2009 after he attacked Rihanna in their car, dealing her facial injuries so severe she required hospital treatment.

He pleaded guilty to a charge of felony assault and was sentenced to five years of probation, one year of domestic violence counselling, and six months of community service.

He was also handed a five-year restraining order requiring him to remain 50 yards away from Rihanna at all times, reducing to 10 at public events.

There was some backlash against Brown following his conviction resulting in radio stations pulling his music from their playlists, however he has still had a successful music career.

He has admitted busting Rihanna’s lip and leaving her “spitting blood” as he attacked her in documentary Welcome To My Life.

Chris Brown reveals all about the night he assaulted former girlfriend Rihanna in a new documentary

What is the Welcome To My Life documentary about?

Chris Brown: Welcome To My Life is a documentary in the same vein as Justin Bieber and Katy Perry’s concert films.

It combines concert footage with behind-the-scenes footage, and interviews with other stars like Usher, DJ Khaled, Mike Tyson, and Rita Ora.

Chris will also discuss his criminal past, especially his assault conviction against Rihanna, in a candid interview.

Black Men More Likely To Die From Their First Heart Attack

Medical equipment to check hart health

After studies earlier last month revealed that African-Americans are more likely to die younger, new studies stating that black men are twice more likely to die from their first heart attack have been found. According to findings, it is reported that only a few black people survive a heart attack in the United States of America.

Such studies have disappointed experts who feel that black people in the US are not diagnosed with cardiac problems until it is too late for them, all of which is pointing to racial discrimination in the US healthcare system as the blacks have less access to healthcare facilities.

Heart disease is very common among men and women in the United States. Reports reveal that more than 610,000 deaths occur every year in the US due to heart diseases, which is one in four deaths on average.

Cardiovascular problems can be caused by several issues such as improper diet, being overweight, smoking, and lack of exercise. All these factors can easily have an impact on the performance of the heart.

According to research, a lot of cardiovascular problems and risk factors among the black population are due to their biological differences and institutionalized differences in access to healthcare. However, it is also possible that the blacks themselves might not be reaching out to and get a check up by their doctors despite the initial indications.

Doctors say that sometimes people do not realize or give importance to the mild symptoms of a heart attack. They are not aware of the severe consequences they will have to face. They think that heart attacks only occur when they have severe chest pains. Due to a lack of knowledge, people avoid going to the doctors because they simply do not realize the need to. They assume that they are fine when in reality they just suffered a heart attack.

It is important to recognize the condition of the heart, especially for black people in the US, so that proper medicine and treatment can be provided in time to save their lives. For this purpose, increased public awareness about the symptoms of heart attacks is necessary and should be taken care of by the health care department of the US. Additionally, more healthcare facilities need to be made accessible to the blacks to ensure that no black has to suffer from lack of treatment.

Bob Harper Opens Up About Surviving Heart Attack: It Was ‘the Scariest Day of My Life’

Bob Harper is speaking out after suffering a heart attack on Feb. 12 that left him unconscious for two days.

“I’ve been on an emotional roller coaster,” The Biggest Loser host, 41, tells TODAY. “I’ve had to work on my meditation and just really take care of myself in any and every way I can during this process. I try to stay positive.”

Harper was working out at a New York City gym when he collapsed and called the experience “the scariest day of my life.”

The trainer has been updating his fans on his recovery progress via social media. Harper has been sharing photos on Instagram of his heart-healthy Mediterranean-style meals, as well as sharing his return to working out.

In early March, Harper shared his disbelief that he had actually experienced such a traumatic event, and thanked his fans for their ongoing support.

“I just keep saying to myself, WTF!!? How did I have a f—— heart attack!!!?!?” he wrote on Instagram following a doctor’s visit. “I really appreciate all the love and support that all of you have given me. Thank you so much.”

Biggest Loser Host Bob Harper’s Heart Attack: Why It Can Happen to Anyone — Even Fit People

This article originally appeared on Health.com.

The Biggest Loser host and personal trainer Bob Harper is recovering from a heart attack, People reported today. The fitness celeb reportedly collapsed two weeks ago while working out at the gym, and was unconscious for two days. He was recently released from the hospital after an eight-day stay.

But Harper, 51, is hardly your typical heart attack victim: He’s relatively young, he’s super-fit, and he’s built his career on getting people healthy. Although the specifics of his experience haven’t been shared, we do know one thing: It’s an important reminder that even people with no obvious risk factors can still have underlying heart disease or problems.

A person’s heart disease risk is affected by both environment and genetics, explains Pankaj Arora MD, assistant professor of cardiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. (Dr. Arora has not treated Harper.) So it’s possible for someone with a family history of heart problems to live an extremely healthy lifestyle—staying active, eating well, not smoking — and still have an elevated risk. In fact, Harper does blame genetics for his recent event, saying his mother died young from a heart attack.

RELATED: 17 Worst Habits for Your Heart

But how much that risk is elevated depends on a lot of different genes, says Dr. Arora, not just one or two — so inherited risk is difficult to test for. It also depends on how a person lives their life. “DNA is not destiny,” he says. “You can lower your risk by staying fit and healthy even if you have bad genes, just as you can raise a low genetic risk by making unhealthy choices.”

One way Dr. Arora determines if his patients might have genetic heart risks is by asking them a question about their family history: “Did your mother have a heart attack before 65 or your father before 55?” If the answer is yes, he asks a second one: “Did the heart attack happen because of their lifestyle choices, or were they living a healthy life and it still happened anyway?”

RELATED: 8 Causes of Chest Pain That Aren’t a Heart Attack

“If their mother or father was healthy and still had a heart attack, that’s a clear sign that we should do genetic testing to determine your genetic risk,” he says. Identifying people who are at high genetic risk for heart problems can allow them to be monitored more closely; they might also be prescribed medications, like statins, to lower their risk.

That being said, there are hundreds of thousands of gene combinations involved in calculating heart disease risk, and screening for them can be complicated and confusing; that’s why it’s not recommended for most people without symptoms or a known family history of problems.

Plus, says Dr. Arora, cases of athletes and other young, fit people suffering sudden serious heart problems are still extremely rare — which is why they’re a big deal in the news when they do happen.

RELATED: 11 Heart Failure Facts Cardiologists Want You to Know

It always makes sense to get clearance from your doctor before you start a new exercise routine, says Dr. Arora, and to know your blood pressure and cholesterol levels — especially if you’re over 35, when these invisible risk factors can start to creep up. “If any of these numbers aren’t where they should be, that gives you some knowledge about your risk and what you should be doing about it,” he says.

But the bottom line, he says, is that no one should be discouraged or scared away from exercise and healthy habits when they hear about an incident like this. “Even if you are born with a high genetic risk, your risk of having an event goes down if you keep up a good physical exercise routine,” he says. “Physical exercise, study after study, has shown to improve cardiovascular health and prolong your life, and that has not changed.”

‘Denim Day’ Reminds Us (Again) That Wearing Tight Pants Doesn’t Give Rapists An Excuse To Attack

Though some court rulings may imply otherwise, wearing tight clothing does not give rapists permission to assault.

Wednesday marks “Denim Day,” the awareness event when advocates and survivors speak up for the rights of people who have been sexually abused. The event dates back to 1999 when the Italian Supreme Court overturned a rape conviction because the victim wore fitted jeans at the time of the assault. The justices ruled that the victim must have helped her attacker remove her pants, thereby giving her consent.

The following day, female politicians came to work wearing jeans to stand in solidarity with the victim. Peace Over Violence then turned that powerful statement into Denim Day — the day advocates wear jeans and attend rallies to protest against misguided attitudes about sexual violence.

Supporters are getting involved in a number of ways.

University of California, Berkeley students, for example, are distributing information about the campaign and giving people a chance to express messages about sexual assault on T-shirts and jeans. The Guess Foundation committed to making a $ 100,000 donation to Peace Over Violence, and has more than 400 stores participating in Denim Day efforts. Assault survivors are also using the awareness day as an opportunity to speak out. Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck unified with the cause by wearing blue jeans to a Denim Day event in L.A., CBS Los Angeles reported.

Over the years, some progress has been made with regard to how survivors of sexual assault are treated.

In 2008, the Italian court overturned its original ruling and stated that “jeans cannot be compared to any type of chastity belt,” the Telegraph reported at the time.

Still, advocates say that rape survivors have to bear far too much stigma.

According to the Rape Abuse & Incest National Network, 60 percent of sexual assault cases in the U.S. are not reported to the police.

Denim Day supporters hope that their efforts will empower abuse victims, break taboos and help debunk misconceptions.

The way our society thinks about rape and receives survivors is not only tragic, it’s dangerous,” Mariska Hargitay, actress and advocate, wrote on Denim Day two years ago. “Fearing that they won’t be believed, survivors are less likely to report their rapes, which means rapists stay out of jail, which means they are free to rape again.”

Feeling inspired? Find out how you can get involved with Denim Day.

Shark Attack Survivor, Mike Coots’s Stunning Instagram Photos Will Keep You Inspired

This is Mike Coots.

When he was 17 years old, he lost his right leg to a shark attack while surfing off waters in his home island of Kauai.

For some, his story might be terrifying just to hear, even 17 years later…

But for Coots, it’s just something you “gotta laugh” about.

While babysitting his six-year-old-nephew, this was presented to him: “It’s you, uncle Mike,” his nephew told him.

He has immense respect for the ocean and does his part in keeping it clean.

“We need to take better care of our oceans,” Coots writes. “Here is a crapload of net and rope this morning. Must of been a few hundred pounds.”

And he shows incredible compassion for the creature that once caused him so much pain.

Coots is an ambassador for the conservation of sharks. In 2010, he was part of the effort to pass a ban on the possession and sale of shark fins.

“I remember the first time getting back in the water … I remember jumping in the ocean, and it felt glorious,”

Coots recalls in a 2012 interview with The Huffington Post.

To this day, he continues to inspire all those who view his incredible photos…

…and hears the story of that one day…

…seventeen years ago…

When a majestic creature changed his life, forever.

Mike Coots is now a professional photographer whose work has been featured in The Wall Street Journal, Hawaii Magazine, Discovery Channel and more. See a portfolio of his work here.
