China Box Office: ‘Solo’ Opens Third Behind ‘How Long’ and ‘Avengers’

“Solo: A Star Wars Story” opened in third place in China behind holdovers “How Long Will I Love U,” and “Avengers: Infinity War.” The misfire meant one of the quietest weekends of the year for the Chinese box office. “Solo: A Star Wars Story” managed just $ 9.62 million, according to local data service Ent Group. ‘Avengers: Infinity War’: Designing Thanos to be an Emotional Villain

There’s no doubt that Marvel’s most ambitious and successful film is Avengers: Infinity War. The box-office juggernaut packs an all-star lineup of over 20 beloved Marvel heroes and features Marvel’s deadliest foe yet — Thanos.

The Mad Titan nearly wiped out an entire ship of refugees and two main characters before the title card for Infinity War even appeared on the screen. This guy was hellbent on achieving his goal, and if you saw the film, you know that he did.

Thanos was voiced and portrayed by actor Josh Brolin. Brolin brought an intensity to Thanos that made every character in his presence fear him. And yet, Brolin also brought a surprising amount of emotional depth to the character. This Mad Titan not only smiled and laughed during the film, he also cried, felt pain, and experienced remorse.

So how did this emotional performance come together? FANDOM sat down with Digital Domain VFX Supervisor Kelly Port to talk about his work on the film — specifically how the VFX studio created such a life-like, terrifying, and emotional villain like Thanos.

Keeping the Actors Together

Digital Domain Avengers Infinity War Black Order

The first key to capturing Brolin’s performance in Infinity War was to free him from the motion capture booth. He may have done some work alone, for detailed scans, but during filming, Brolin was on set with the cast to ensure his lines and reactions could be captured in the moment.

“Normally, when you do any kind of motion capture or body capture it’s oftentimes done in a separate venue, not on a set, actually,” said Port. “In this particular film we used a great technique that integrated the cameras into the set. It allowed the performers to interact with other actors on the set, so we could motion capture multiple characters at the same time, both body and face capture.”

Capturing Josh Brolin’s Performance

“If Thanos didn’t work, then we wouldn’t have a movie,” Port said, and it’s true. Thanos needed to work for Infinity War to make any kind of sense or impact.

“Dan DeLeeuw, the head of VFX at Marvel; the directors, the Russo brothers; and the Marvel executives could not have stressed the importance enough of making sure that the character and Josh Brolin’s performance came through,” Port said.

“We wanted to get as much of the facial performance [as possible], especially the subtleties [of it]. We tested that for a few months and then presented it to Marvel,” said Port. “They breathed a huge sigh of relief. We focused on the eyes. We got beyond pore-level detail for the face. It’s something that everyone on our team was super proud of.”

Favorite Scenes to Work On

Port had a number of favorite shots, most of which were really emotional and painful. He joked that Digital Domain only got to work on the sad moments.

“There were so many beautiful shots,” said Port. “Because our focus was on Thanos, and a lot of [his] dramatic moments, Digital Domain was responsible for these super depressing shots, like Gamora dying or the flashback to little Gamora. We did all of those scenes. We joked with Marvel to give us something funny.”

One of Port’s favorite shots to design was on Vormir. “The slow-mo shot of Thanos dragging Gamora and throwing her over the cliffs of Vormir,” was Port’s favorite. He also loved working on “The close-ups in that scene,” and “the towers, the snow, the cloud formations,” on Vormir. “As it becomes clear that Thanos’ tears are not for him, you see that the snow begins to drift upwards, which culminates in the big concussion blast and the inverted cloud. Then, you cut to him down in the water.”

Port also loved working on Thanos’ opening shot on the Asgardian ship. “And I really like the reveal shot in the opening scene, where Thanos is walking through some mist and you start to see the light on his face. Then, we see the gauntlet. That’s really the first reveal of him.”

Digital Domain Avengers Infinity War Thanos

Port’s last bit of detail revolved around a subtle Easter egg. Apparently, in the final shot, when Thanos is walking through the grass, just before he sits down, you can see his heavy Titan armor on a scarecrow. “It’s right in his front yard there, where he’s walking out before he sits down. You see it on the right, out in the yard, in the grass.”

Did you catch the Thanos scarecrow? What were some of your favorite VFX shots in the film? Did you find the emotions of Thanos believable? Let us know on social @getFANDOM.

Avengers: Infinity War Wins Box Office Again and Becomes Fifth Highest Grossing Film of All Time Worldwide

(LOS ANGELES) — “Avengers: Infinity War” is still ruling the box office in its third weekend in theaters, easily beating out the mom-themed fare.

The Walt Disney Studios on Sunday estimates that “Infinity War” has added $ 61.8 million from North American theaters bringing its total domestic earnings to $ 547.8 million. Globally the film has now grossed over $ 1.6 billion— $ 200 million of which was from its massive opening in China this weekend. It’s now the fifth highest grossing film of all time worldwide.

The superhero blockbuster overpowered newcomers like the Melissa McCarthy comedy “Life of the Party” and the Gabrielle Union thriller “Breaking In,” both of which were strategically timed to debut on Mother’s Day weekend. Both films drew overwhelmingly female audiences, too.

In a distant second, “Life of the Party” earned an estimated $ 18.5 million, which is a few million short of some of McCarthy’s other comedy collaborations with husband Ben Falcone like “Tammy” and “The Boss.” It also got similarly mixed reviews from critics. The Warner Bros. release stars McCarthy as a woman who decides to go back to college with her daughter.

The studio is “thrilled” with the results.

“It’s escapist movie palace fare,” said Jeff Goldstein, Warner Bros.’ president of domestic distribution.

The modestly budgeted “Breaking In” took third place with $ 16.5 million, over-performing most industry expectations despite lackluster reviews. The film stars Union as a mom who has to fight to save her kids from a group of home invaders.

“It’s an edge-of-the-seat thriller that you may not always associate with Mother’s Day, but it worked extraordinarily well,” said Jim Orr, Universal’s president of domestic theatrical distribution.

The Universal Pictures release is just the latest in a long string of successful collaborations with producer Will Packer, who also produced “Girl’s Trip” and the “Ride Along” films.

“We have a great partner in Will Packer and ‘Breaking In’ is another example of his very talented approach and our mutual success,” Orr said.

Also benefiting from the Mother’s Day timing was “Overboard,” which earned $ 10.1 million to take fourth place, down only 31 percent from its debut last weekend. And rounding out the top five was “A Quiet Place” with $ 6.4 million. The John Krasinski-directed thriller has now earned $ 169.6 million domestically.

“This is a typical Mother’s Day weekend with a big blockbuster in the mix and some counter programming thrown in for good measure as we await the arrival of ‘Deadpool 2’ next week,” said comScore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian.

Because of the massive success of “Infinity War,” the box office is up 4.9 percent for the year, and a slew of blockbusters coming up are hoping to continue the success, including “Deadpool 2” and “Solo: A Star Wars Story” just one week later.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to comScore. Where available, the latest international numbers for Friday through Sunday are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1.”Avengers: Infinity War,” $ 61.8 million ($ 281.3 million international).

2.”Life of the Party,” $ 18.5 million ($ 2.9 million international).

3.”Breaking In,” $ 16.5 million ($ 1 million international).

4.”Overboard,” $ 10.1 million ($ 8.2 million international).

5.”A Quiet Place,” $ 6.4 million ($ 2.8 million international).

6.”I Feel Pretty,” $ 3.7 million ($ 3.5 million international).

7.”Rampage,” $ 3.4 million ($ 6.4 million international).

8.”Tully,” $ 2.2 million.

9.”Black Panther,” $ 1.9 million.

10.”Blockers,” $ 1.1 million ($ 1.2 million international).

Ryan Reynolds Celebrates Infinity War‘s Success With Deadpool’s Avengers Rejection Letter

Avengers: Infinity War roared to a $ 250 million opening at the box office this weekend, edging out Star Wars: The Force Awakens to earn the highest domestic debut of all time. And Ryan Reynolds knows that Deadpool had absolutely nothing to do with that.

The DC anti-hero actor took to Twitter on Sunday to congratulate Iron Man, Captain America, the Hulk and all the rest of the Avengers on their massive success by sharing his character’s rejection letter from the Marvel superhero team.

“From a guy who never knows when to quit, I’m glad you guys never did,” he captioned a photo of the Stark Industries memo. “Congrats .”

The note—which is dated April 14, 2012 and signed by none other than Tony Stark—lets Deadpool know in no uncertain terms what the Avengers think of his application to become one of them.

“Re: Joining the Avengers,” it reads. “No. Absolutely not. Go bother Prof. X. No.”

Deadpool 2 is set to hit theaters on May 18.

An Old Marvel Villain Makes a Surprising Cameo in Avengers: Infinity War

Warning: This post contains spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War.

Just about every superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe makes an appearance in Avengers: Infinity War. But fans certainly weren’t expecting Johann Schmidt, a.k.a. the Red Skull, from Captain America: The First Avenger in the new film. And yet there he is on the planet Vormir, where he guides Thanos to an Infinity Stone. (You can see the character in the First Avenger trailer above.)

Schmidt was the main villain in the first Captain America movie. He headed up HYDRA, a faction of the Nazi Party during World War II. He experimented on himself with a version of the super soldier serum that made Captain America tall and buff. Unfortunately for the Schmidt, the serum backfired and gave him, well, a red skull.

When the Red Skull gets his hands on the Tesseract, a powerful cube that contains an Infinity Stone, he decides to break from the Nazi Party and try to rule the world on his own. Captain America battles Red Skull, and ultimately Red Skull unwisely touches the Tesseract with his bare hands. He vanishes.

It turns out only an extremely powerful being, like Thanos, can touch Infinity Stones without dying. And even Thanos needs to carry them around in a glove to protect himself.

Infinity War reveals that the Red Skull was teleported to Vormir, where the Soul Stone is kept. The former villain explains to Thanos and Gamora that he’s been doomed to a purgatory where he can guid those who seek the Soul Stone but never attain it himself. Once Thanos claims the stone, Red Skull disappears.

Spoiler Alert: The ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Post-Credit Scene Gets Leaked Online

As Avengers: Infinity War hits American audiences today, the third instalment of the Avengers film franchise has already debuted in Asia. With numerous theories and post-credit explanation videos surfacing rapidly each day on the Internet, the Infinity War clip has leaked online.

The clip above shows a surprise appearance from sometimes SHIELD leaders Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson) and Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) as they are driving around New York City after the attacks made by Thanos. As Fury tries to connect to Hawkeye, a car with no driver swerves and crashes in front of them. As the unexplainable disappearances continue, we see a suddenly unmanned helicopter crash into the side of a building. Fury turns to Hill, only to see that she too is fading away. Fury quickly takes out a device to send out a distress signal, but fades away. As the pager-like device falls the the ground, the star logo of Captain Marvel soon appears.

But what does this mean? This will set the stage for the upcoming Captain Marvel film and the still named Avengers 4 film. Brie Larson will debut as the hero — aka Carol Danvers — in her ’90s-set solo movie next year alongside Jackson, before playing a key role in the untitled Avengers 4. Watch it above.

‘Avengers: Infinity War’: Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Makes It To ‘Avengers 4’?

SPOILER ALERT: Warning, this article contains spoilers from Avengers: Infinity War. Proceed at your own risk.

Avengers: Infinity War is by far the most expansive movie Marvel has ever made. The cast, the villains, the threats, the stakes, everything in this film is more elevated than it has ever been. Stakes on this scale come with real consequences and when characters come face to face with Thanos, it’s not likely they will make it out alive.

So let’s just cut to the chase here: a lot of characters die in Avengers: Infinity War. Safe to say almost half of the characters in the film suffer a version of death. We say a “version of death” because, to make a Princess Bride reference, some characters are what we would consider “all dead” and “mostly dead.” Keep reading to find out what we mean.

Asgardian Legends

The beginning of the film is BRUTAL and knocks two characters out within the first few minutes: Heimdall and Loki. Heimdall dies after he summons the last of his energy to open the bi-frost, which sends The Hulk back to Earth. Loki dies trying to outsmart Thanos.

Both characters die doing something heroic and valiant, which may be predictable for Heimdall, but is definitely new for Loki. Loki was the villain in the first Avengers movie, he was acting on Thanos’ orders to bring him the Tesseract (Space Stone). Loki could have surrendered the Tesseract as if he was fulfilling Thanos’ initial command. Not so. This time, Loki played the hero and paid dearly for it.

Half of Asgard’s refugees were also killed in the opening scene of the film. No word yet if Korg, Valkyrie, or other characters from Thor: Ragnarok made it off the ship, but Thor does say later in the film that “half of my peoeple were slaughtered,” so those characters could still be alive.

The Soul of Thanos

The next on-screen death was even more brutal than the first two. Gamora, Star-Lord’s love, Guardian of the Galaxy, wielder of an Infinity Stone, was killed by her father’s own hand. Apparently she was the only woman in the universe who knew the location of the final Infinity Stone — the Soul Stone.

Thanos sent her on a quest for the stone before she became a Guardian, but she hid its location from him. He discovered her disloyalty by torturing Nebula. Only then did Gamora give up the stone’s location. Together, Gamora and Thanos traveled to Vormir to find the last of the six stones.

While there, they encountered the Stonekeeper (a familiar face), who explained that one can only posses the Soul Stone if he or she can let go of what they love most. Gamora laughed because she didn’t think Thanos could love anyone. She was proven wrong, however, when he admitted that he loved her. He pushed her off the edge of a cliff and was given the stone in return.

This is a shocking end for Gamora, especially considering there is another Guardians of the Galaxy movie on the horizon. Hopefully she can be saved in Avengers 4.

Without Vision the People Perish

Paul Bettany as Vision.

We knew this one was coming, but it still hurt like hell. Thanos’ minions tried to get the Mind Stone out of Vision‘s head a few different times during the film, but he was protected by both Captain America and Scarlet Witch. However, when it came to destroying the stone so Thanos couldn’t get his hands on it, Scarlet Witch had to destroy it herself. OUCH.

That’s right, Scarlet Witch killed the man she loved to save the universe. This was a theme of the film, actually, since Gamora asked Star-Lord to kill her as well, but Thanos stopped him before he could. After Scarlet Witch killed Vision, Thanos used the Time Stone to reverse time so he could go back in time and rip the stone out Vision’s head and then he died again.

It’s hard to say if Vision can come back from this, considering he died twice. But, if the Avengers can re-write time in Avengers 4 to save Gamora, hopefully they can save Vision too. If not, we just lost the MCU’s best, most purest android and Wanda just lost the love of her life.

Oh Snap

Avengers Infinity War Thanos

Lastly we have “mostly dead” characters. These are characters who vanished out of existence when Thanos snapped his fingers. This happened in quick succession at the end of the film, but we think we caught everyone. Hold onto your hearts because we lost A LOT of characters: Bucky, Black Panther, Star-Lord, Mantis, Drax, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Scarlet Witch, and Groot all vanished into thin air.

THIS WAS SO HARD TO WATCH! Steve Rogers watched Bucky vanish. Iron Man held Peter Parker in his arms as he became dust in the wind. Okoye watched her King vanish into nothing. Even Nick Fury and Maria Hill vanished during the post-credits scene. DAMMIT THANOS.

That leaves Steve Rogers, War Machine, Wong, Rocket, Iron Man, Black Widow, Hulk, Okoye, Shuri and Thor to figure out what the heck happened and how to get everyone back. Nebula is also still out there, as are Hawkeye and Ant-Man. It’s funny that everyone was wondering if Hawkeye was going to be in this film because, even though he wasn’t, he is clearly going to be an important character in Avengers 4.

Did you think this many characters were going to die in Infinity War? Are you surprised that Tony Stark and Captain America are still alive? Let us know on social or in the community pages.

Marvel’s ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Raises the Stakes for Superhero Films (Spoiler Free Review)

‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Review: Marvel Delivers On Every Promise

Spoiler-free: This Avengers: Infinity War review will not contain specific plot spoilers, but it will cover the film’s themes, characters, and expectations.

For the last 10 years, Marvel has been building to this one storyline: Thanos’ quest for the Infinity Gems. While Thanos‘ presence has been felt in many films, including the first Avengers, this is truly his grand entrance into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

As for Earth’s and the Galaxy’s Mightiest Heroes, everyone has a role to play. Whether they’re holding back Ebony Maw, Proxima Midnight, or Thanos himself, each Guardian, each Avenger, and each hero in this film has something powerful to do. As for who lives and who dies, while we won’t be covering that here, we can say this: the stakes are real and certain characters will not be coming back.

Grab your tissues, your shields, and your best pop culture references and let’s dive into this non-spoiler review for Avengers: Infinity War.

The Emotional Moments Hit Home

Avengers Infinity War Scarlet Witch Vision

If Marvel has proved anything in the last ten years, it’s that each of their characters can hold their own in stand alone films. This was how the Marvel Universe was built. Tony Stark led the charge by saying “I am Iron Man” at the end of Iron Man. But, as Nick Fury said, Tony Stark and all the other characters in this film have “become part of a larger universe.”

That universe has become tightly intertwined through the relationships these characters have built over the last 10 years. Tony and Pepper Potts, Bucky and Captain America, Thor and Loki, Rocket and Groot, Tony and Bruce Banner, Black Widow and Falcon, Gamora and Star-Lord, Tony and Peter Parker, Black Panther and Shuri.

These relationships have meaning and in Avengers: Infinity War, Thanos will tear them apart. It would be easy to say, “bring tissues because X dies…” but that’s not quite the case here. Bring the tissues because characters that love each other, whether it’s the “unspoken” love between Star-Lord and Gamora or the love that has been blossoming between Wanda and Vision, this love is tested and tested HARD.

Marvel’s Funniest Film to Date

Avengers Infinity War Doctor Strange Tony Stark Bruce Banner Wong

In the midst of this testing, Marvel never fails to land a good joke. The audience in the theater was howling during certain scenes, howling as loud as audiences might have done the first time Star-Lord called Kevin Bacon a hero in the first Guardians of the Galaxy.

Right away the film kicks in the humor. One minute you could be crying and the next you could be laughing. That’s how well Marvel has figured out their storytelling. Peter Parker delivers a lot of these laughs, especially with his never ending movie and pop culture references. Doctor Strange delivers a lot of dry humor, especially when he meets Tony Stark for the first time.  And, as always, the Guardians deliver huge laughs. Especially Rocket, who has some fantastic moments with Thor.

What’s important about this levity is that it’s needed. Thanos is not called the “mad Titan” for nothing. He is hellbent on getting the gems and his “children”, Proxima Midnight, Corvus Glaive, Ebony Maw and Cull Obsidian, are RUTHLESS. In fact, their fight sequences with the Avengers are some of the best Marvel has even done.

The Film Delivers Incredible Spectacle

Avengers Infinity War Spider-Man Iron Spider

When looking at a film like this, it’s hard not to think of other superhero films that have come before. While it would be easy to compare this to Justice League or even the first Avengers, nothing even comes close to Infinity War. The only film that has ever achieved this combination of storytelling, set pieces, stunts, action, and battles is Return of the King.

Return of the King, while only the third film in the Lord of the Rings franchise (Infinity War is 19th, if we’re counting), gave audiences the biggest on screen battle they have ever seen. It also divided its key cast, sending Frodo into Mordor, Aragorn into the Dead City, Gandalf to the White Tower of Gondor and Merry and Pippin to both sides of the great battle.

In Infinity War, multiple storylines take place at once, all over the galaxy. Each new planet the film visits is breathtaking and the final battle in Wakanda is definitely on the scale of the final battle in Return of the King. In terms of visual effects, the film fires on all pistons. Planets, aliens, battles, Tony’s new Iron Man suit, the Iron Spider suit Peter wears, Doctor Strange and Wong‘s mystical powers, even the gems themselves look gorgeous and incredibly detailed. Every scene, every effect, every choice pays off.

Is Avengers: Infinity War Good?

Avengers Infinity War Thanos

Yes. It’s really good. Good is actually an understatement considering everything that Marvel accomplished in this film. And here’s the crazy thing, Infinity War is only PART ONE of a two-part story. That’s right, the end of Infinity War is the BIGGEST CLIFFHANGER in cinematic history. While the film does come to a very specific ending, it sets up the entire plot of Avengers 4.

Don’t Miss the Cameos

There are some great cameos in this film! While Stan Lee is always a friendly face to see on film, another character from the Marvel Universe does make his or her return. No spoilers, but the audience made such an audible gasp when this person came on screen it was amazing. Also, the film does answer three of the biggest questions everyone is asking:

“Where is the Soul Gem?”

“Where is Hawkeye?”

“Is there a post-credit scene?”

You will find out all of these answers and more when the film opens later this week! As for the post-credit scene, a true Marvel fan always stays until the end credits.

Avengers: Infinity War opens worldwide on April 27, 2018.

‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Review: Not All Your Marvel Superhero Faves Make It Out Alive

Chuck Zlotnick/Marvel Studios

I’m not going to tell you who dies in Avengers: Infinity War.

Nonetheless, death hangs like a shroud over the latest—and, to date, largest—entry in the ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe, which assembles just about every previously introduced series character for all-out CGI war against Thanos, a purple-faced behemoth (embodied by Josh Brolin via motion-capture technology) with arrogant boasts and apocalyptic rationalizations dripping off his tongue. Thanos has travelled to Earth (and the far reaches beyond) in search of the Infinity Stones, those six magical cosmic objects that provide all sorts of limitless powers, and which he plans to use (in a shiny gold glove known as the Infinity Gauntlet) to obliterate half of the world’s creatures in his ongoing quest to bring balance to the universe.

It’s a plan for combatting overpopulation that only a super-lunatic could conceive.

Avengers: Infinity War has been a massive undertaking for Marvel. From sorting through characters, to picking up plot lines that have stretched between 18 films, Avengers: Infinity War is easily the most ambitious thing Marvel has ever done.

10 years of storytelling are about to come to a head in the film and over 40 characters will be colliding. Whether these characters will be spending only minutes together or entire scenes, FANDOM is excited to see some epic team-ups.

What will Rocket say when he meets Captain America for the first time? Will Groot and Hulk just have amazing non-verbal communication? And what about Iron Man and Star-Lord? Will their egos even be able to fit in the same room together? Whoever ends up together in this film, here are five team-ups we HAVE to see:

The Magicians

The “age of miracles” has truly come, just as Baron von Strucker prophesied in Age of Ultron. With this age of miracles comes Marvel’s magicians, magic wielders like Doctor Strange, Wong, and Scarlet Witch.

Scarlet Witch was the only magic user in the Avengers, and in Infinity War she’ll finally be joined by Strange and Wong. What can she teach them? What can they teach her? Wanda has been alone since the death of her brother, Quicksilver, and we’re very excited to see her find a new family with Strange and Wong.

The Soldiers

Steve, Bucky, and Falcon got to team-up a bit during the events of Captain America: Civil War. There was that iconic shot of the three of them in a tiny VW bug, road-tripping to meet Sharon Carter. Falcon and Bucky even gave Cap the “nod” when Steve and Sharon kissed.

Now that Bucky is all healed up mentally and physically, we’re hoping to see a road trip reunion. Bucky, Cap, and Falcon are also cut out of the same cloth. They are soldiers first, above everything else. They know what it’s like to go to war, more so than most. Hopefully they get some fun scenes together — who knows, perhaps Bucky or Falcon will pick up Cap’s shield at the end of all this.

The Badass Ladies

Gamora, Black Widow and Okoye are the most powerful women in the Marvel Universe. These women have defended their respective teams over many long years. Gamora has traversed the galaxy with the Guardians, Romanoff has supported S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Avengers through many battles and Okoye has defended Wakanda from threats without and within.

These three ladies NEED a scene together. Whether they share a laugh over how long they have been solo lady soldiers or they share a powerful team-up, seeing them together would be powerful. Especially since they all have such different strengths.

The Next Generation

Shuri and Peter Parker are the smartest people in the MCU, outside of Tony Stark. While Peter is holding his own at his technical school in New York City, Shuri is the girl genius of Wakanda. Not only is Shuri responsible for all the cool tech in Wakanda, but she also made Black Panther’s amazing suit.

Peter and Shuri are also both young and full of hope. While Peter experienced the bitter taste of loss last year during the events of Spider-Man: Homecoming he still remains optimistic about fighting crime and taking on bad guys. Shuri shares this optimism and has a desire to help other young people, especially based on the post-credit scene in Black Panther.

Together they bring two genius-level intellects and their combined powers of hope. Seeing them work together and geek out over new tech would be so fun to see in Infinity War.

The Psychotic Siblings

Loki and Nebula are definitely the wild cards of Infinity War. Both of these characters have axes to grind with Thanos. Loki was under Thanos’s control leading up to the Battle of New York in Avengers and Nebula was tortured by Thanos most of her life. Both of these characters also have a lot in common. They both grew up in the shadows of greater siblings. Loki lived in Thor’s shadow for most of his life, and Nebula grew up in Gamora’s shadow.

Both of these characters are also powerful warriors. Where Nebula is skilled in combat, Loki is skilled in magic and mischief. They are both extremely driven and self-serving. Can you imagine if they crossed paths in the film or if their motivations aligned, even for a second? I would not want to be Thanos or the Black Order with Loki and Nebula on my tail.

What is Thor’s New Weapon in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’?

The destruction of Mjölnir in Thor: Ragnarok was nothing short of tragic. Thor struggled without his trusty hammer in the film, so much so that he couldn’t conjure lightning or thunder without it. Thankfully, by the end of the film, Thor realized that his power did not come from Mjölnir, but from within himself. So, with Mjölnir gone, what is Thor’s new weapon in Avengers: Infinity War?

From Hammer to Axe

LEGO Avengers Infinity War

Keen eyed fans first caught a glimpse of Thor’s new weapon in a LEGO set for Avengers: Infinity War called “Thor’s Weapon Quest.” In the set, Thor, Groot and Rocket have taken a jump ship from Star-Lord’s ship The Milano to an unknown location to forge Thor a new weapon.

The weapon is a cross between a hammer and an axe. At first, fans thought Thor was wielding an Asgardian weapon called the Jarnbjorn. Thor has used the Jarnbjorn in the comics a few times, most notably in the recent run of Mighty Thor. However, while the axe-head on Thor’s new weapon resembles the Jarnbjorn, new toys have revealed its true name.

Say Hello to Strombreaker

We get a great look of the new weapon here, thanks to the Hot Toys 1/6 scale toy. Thor is holding up a mighty weapon. You can see the design much more clearly here: a long, wood-crafted handle, a sharp axe blade and a round hammer piece. This is definitely not the Jarnbjorn, but instead the Stormbreaker.

A toy set from Hasbro also confirmed the name:

Thor Stormbreaker

The Stormbreaker has a fascinating history in Marvel Comics. Odin ordered the Dwarves of Nidavellir to create Stormbreaker for Beta Ray Bill after Bill defeated Thor in battle. Eitri the Dwarf forged the weapon for Bill out of the same substance as Mjölnir and Odin enchanted it.

Stormbreaker was similar to Mjölnir in that only certain people could hold it. In the comics, it mainly belonged to Beta Ray Bill. In the Marvel films, we haven’t exactly seen Beta Ray Bill yet. His head was carved into The Grandmaster’s tower in Thor: Ragnarok, but that’s all we’ve seen of him so far.

Why Does Thor Have It?

Beta Ray Bill Thor

Since Beta Ray Bill isn’t currently an MCU character, this could be why Thor gets Stormbreaker instead. Based on that LEGO set, it looks like Rocket and Groot help Thor create Stormbreaker. However, if Infinity War follows the comics, they could pay a visit to the Dwarves of Nidavellir first, to get the metal.

It’s also possible that *if* Thor dies in Infinity War, someone knew will carry the Stormbreake. Perhaps this is the weapon that will get passed to the “New Thor”. However Thor gets the Stormbreaker, it’s sure to be as powerful as Mjölnir and might even be more deadly, judging by the blade.

Based on These Quotes, Someone’s Very Probably Dying in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’

Before Captain America: Civil War, there was speculation that an Avenger would die in the movie. Which didn’t come to fruition. And in the run-up to the release of Avengers: Infinity War, there has been similar chatter online. With the world strangely obsessed with one of earth’s mightiest heroes kicking the bucket for our viewing pleasure.

So we asked the directors of those movies — Joe Russo and Anthony Russo — how they felt about this desire for Avenger death. You can watch what they said in the video above, or continue reading below.

Avengers: Infinity War directors Anthony and Joe Russo.

“I think they all crave stakes,” came the response from Joe regarding the fans. “To be honest, you diminish the power of something if it doesn’t have an ending at some point. It has to have an ending. For us, as comic book fans, we appreciate when a character death would occur in the books, because then a new run; a new voice would come in years later and re-interpret the characters.

“For us, I think it’s valuable that this 10-year experiment comes to a close. Prior to a new experiment beginning with new characters. So there will be some endings, and new beginnings out of this. But this is the final chapter of this book.”

We followed up by being more direct about whether an Avenger might actually die in this instalment.

“This closure could involve death,” came the response from Joe, understandably keeping his cards close to his chest. “We certainly appreciate stakes, and we’re not afraid of stakes from a storytelling standpoint. And I will say that Thanos is without question the most difficult villain that the heroes have faced.

“The theme of the movie is: ‘What does it take to be a hero in a complicated world?’ Well, the Avengers are going to have to answer that question in spades because it’s going to cost them a lot in order to defeat Thanos. He’s a nearly invincible character with a genius-level intelligence.”

We reckon that definitely, nearly, almost, surely, maybe, certainly means an Avenger will die during Infinity War. The next question is, which one?

‘Infinity Gauntlet’ Might Hold the Secret to Defeating Thanos in ‘Infinity War’

Why Nebula Should Kill Thanos in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’

The Avengers movies — and the many MCU flicks before them — have been building up to a battle royale with super-villain Thanos. And as ‘Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’ are likely to be hit by casualties, but unlikely to lose, the smart money is on them defeating the big bad. Either in Avengers: Infinity War, or its as-yet-untitled sequel. But who will be the hero who takes the life of the ‘Mad Titan’? We believe there’s only one candidate… and her name is Nebula.

Nebula’s Torturous Childhood

Nebula is an orphan who had the misfortune of being adopted by Thanos. Alongside Gamora. The pair were trained as warriors, loyal to their despotic father. Who had a pretty twisted way of schooling them.

“My father would have Gamora and me battle one another in training,” Nebula explains during Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. “Every time my sister prevailed my father would replace a piece of me with machinery, claiming he wanted me to be her equal. But she won. Again, and again, and again.”

The bionic upgrades gave her super-strength, speed and agility, turning Nebula into the fiercest of fighters. But those many agonising operations also effectively meant she spent most of her childhood being tortured by her father. Which takes its toll on her psyche.

Nebula and Ronan

Ronan and Nebula from Guardians of the Galaxy
Ronan (Lee Pace) and Nebula (Karen Gillan).

Thanos gifts Nebula to Ronan the Accuser to help retrieve the Orb he so coveted. Which she did with little hesitation, torturing Nova Guards, killing scores of prisoners, destroying Gamora’s ship, and leaving her sister for dead.

But while she appeared to do this out of loyalty to Thanos, it soon became clear that Nebula had an ulterior motive. Because as soon as Ronan mainlined the power of the Orb, and revealed that he planned to destroy her despotic Dad, she immediately switched allegiance. Vowing to help him kill Thanos, followed by a thousand planets.

At the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Ronan’s plan fails and he’s the one who gets killed. Via the power of dance. But Nebula survives, flying away on a Ravager M-Ship, her intentions towards her adopted father now very much clear.

Nebula and the Guardians of the Galaxy

Guardians of the Galaxy
The Guardians and Nebula.

Nebula resents her sister Gamora, because she was the Mad Titan’s favourite, and because, as she puts it, “You were the one who wanted to win, and I just wanted a sister. You were all I had, but you were the one who needed to win. Thanos pulled my eye from my head, and my brain from my skull, and my arm from my body… because of you.”

In Nebula’s mind, this makes them mortal enemies, and when she is captured by the Guardians of the Galaxy at the start of Vol. 2, that hatred burns bright, the sisters verbally sparring and very nearly coming to blows.

When Nebula escapes their clutches, she tells Kraglin of her plan to kill Gamora. Then adds that she would use the bounty  placed on the rest of the Guardians to kill Thanos. Her objective becoming ever more pronounced.

As the film progresses, Nebula and Gamora are forced to form an uneasy alliance, and slowly start to bond. With Nebula even saving her sister’s life. But when Gamora says, “I was a little girl, trying to live day-by-day, not knowing or understanding what that meant to you. There are many other girls out there, like us. You can stay with us, and help them,” Nebula’s response is simple and unwavering. “I can help them. By killing Thanos.”

Why Nebula Should be the One to Kill Thanos

Nebula Marvel
Surely it has to be Nebula!

While there are a few candidates, in FANDOM’s opinion, Nebula must be the one to kill the big bad. She has that horrible history with Thanos, which gives her the ideal motive. She is also a villain who has turned into a hero over the two Guardians of the Galaxy movies. So destroying the Titan who destroyed both her body and spirit would give Nebula a satisfying story arc.

Of course, there are more decent and heroic figures in Infinity War. If the trailers are anything to go by, the likes of Captain America, Vision, Thor, and Scarlet Witch will all have their reasons for wanting to take Thanos out.

Equally, it might be a team effort, with the Infinity War requiring the might of the Avengers and their many super-friends and sidekicks working together to finally bring him down.

But the most satisfying conclusion — be it in this movie, or the next — will be for Nebula to deliver that final blow. Giving closure to her tragic tale, and earning Nebula redemption as she finally puts Thanos to the sword.

Place Your Bets on Who Will Die in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’

Avengers: Infinity War is going to change the Marvel Cinematic Universe forever. It’s a safe bet that some characters aren’t going to make it out alive when they come face to face with Thanos and his minions. But, if you were going put a few bucks on who will live and who will die, which are the safe bets and which ones might be a little bit risky?

We’ve crunched the numbers and done tons of thorough research and come up with the definitive list of who might be leaving the Marvel Cinematic Universe for good.

Ant-Man and The Wasp

Scott Lang isn’t being featured prominently in the marketing for Avengers: Infinity War, and he’ll be headlining his own solo feature only a few months after Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters. As far as we know, the events in Ant-Man and the Wasp take place after Avengers: Infinity War. That makes Ant-Man’s fate pretty clear.

Odds of death: Save your money.

Black Panther

Black Panther is one of the highest grossing films of all time and a sequel is already in the works. ‘Nuff said.

Odds of death: Save your money.

Black Widow

Fans have been clamoring for a Black Widow film for years. Scarlett Johansson doesn’t seem like she’s ready to leave the role either. And it might not be so cool to kill off one of your few female characters.

Odds of death: Slim to none.

Bucky Barnes

captain america bucky barnes feature

Bucky just found a new home in Wakanda and is likely to become its adopted son. And some behind the scenes info helps us solve this question. Sebastian Stan is signed up for a nine-picture deal — which does not include cameos — and he hasn’t gotten close to completing that.

Odds of death: Save your money.

Captain America

Avengers: Infinity War Captain America Thanos

Though Chris Evans has said he’ll be returning for Avengers 4, it’s possible he’ll only be showing up in newly shot flashbacks. Evans has been in the role for a long time and seems like he’s getting ready to hang up the shield once and for all.

Odds of death: Average-to-possible. Worth a mid-level bet.

Doctor Strange

Stephen Strange has only recently been introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Also, he’s our only inlet into the magical side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for now. No way we’re losing that at this juncture.

Odds of death: Save your money.

Anthony Mackie as Falcon.

Sam Wilson has been a wonderful partner to Steve Rogers ever since Captain America: The Winter Soldier. And if Cap does bite the dust, it’s possible that Falcon will take up the mantle for a new generation. That puts his chances of survival pretty high.

Odds of death: Slim to none.

The Guardians of the Galaxy

Guardians of the Galaxy 2

This cast is the best ensemble in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and we know that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is already on the way. If any of the key heroes were going to die, it’d probably be in their own trilogy. However, Nebula‘s quest for revenge against Thanos could make her a sacrifice that galvanizes Gamora in a way we haven’t seen before. And seeing her cope with her sister’s death in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 sounds like a good narrative beat to explore.

Odds of Death: On Nebula, it’s pretty high. Everyone else is either safe or a very low chance of dying.

With his lack of presence in marketing and Jeremy Renner’s long-running attachment to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Hawkeye is definitely on the chopping block. Though, he could escape a grisly fate and bring everything to a close in Avengers 4. He’s certainly a death that will hit for a lot of fans. It’s just a matter of which film is going to be his last.

Odds of Death: High but not enough to go all-in.

Hulk has only begun to show his full potential in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and fans have come to love him even more after his turn in Thor: Ragnarok. He’ll probably take the biggest beating he’s received yet but he’ll still come out on top when it’s all over.

Odds of death: Slim to none.

Iron Man

This is so expected that it feels like a no-brainer. Robert Downey, Jr. kicked off the Marvel Cinematic Universe and it seems fitting that this momentous film should be Tony Stark‘s exit. Not to mention that it’s just getting too expensive to keep hiring RDJ for each successive picture.

Odds of death: Bet the farm.

Loki has been a thorn in our heroes’ side for a very long time, but Avengers: Infinity War is looking like it could be his last hurrah. He’s seen giving Thanos the Tesseract but it’s likely that the Mad Titan will punish the Asgardian trickster for his failure in The Avengers. And losing Tom Hiddleston will cause a huge reaction from fans, and Marvel is definitely going big for this flick.

Odds of death: Very high.

Scarlet Witch

Scarlet Witch

Elizabeth Olsen hasn’t been in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for too long. So, it’s likely that the filmmakers have bigger plans for Wanda Maximoff. In fact, her reality-warping powers could very well play a big part in trying to fix whatever horrible events happen because of Avengers: Infinity War. And sadly, it’s much more likely that Scarlet Witch is going to lose someone she loves instead of her own life.

Odds of death: Slim to none.

iron spider armor feature

No way. We’ve already got another Spider-Man movie in the works and we just got Tom Holland in the mix as Peter Parker. He’s so safe that it hurts.

Odds of death: Save your money.

thor: ragnarok topic card feature hero

For a while, it was thought that Thor would be one of the casualties of Avengers: Infinity War. But, with the success of Thor: Ragnarok and a newly re-energized Chris Hemsworth, it’s likely that he’s going to stick around for at least one more outing. But, he could be one of the big surprise deaths if that’s how Marvel wants to play it.

Odds of death: Average-to-low.

avengers vision dies feature

This one hurts. It certainly looks like Vision is going to be an early casualty of the film. We know that Vision and Scarlet Witch will be meeting in secret since they are on opposing teams after the events of Captain America: Civil War. It’s sounding like Avengers: Infinity War is going to position their romance as something that audiences will be strongly attached to, and then will be devastated when it’s torn apart by the death of Vision.

Odds of death: Very high.

‘Agents of SHIELD’ Will Connect to ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, Says EPs

Throughout Season 5, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been trying to prevent the end of the world. During their time in the future, the world-ending was believed to be caused by Agent Daisy Johnson. But, with Avengers: Infinity War on the horizon, it’s hard not to wonder if Thanos will split the Earth in two, and not Daisy.

It’s All Connected

FANDOM caught up with the cast and producers of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. at WonderCon, and asked them whether Avengers: Infinity War will have an effect on the show. As with all other Marvel films, the answer is yes. Marvel TV President Jeph Loeb also said, “We do what we do best, which is to acknowledge what’s happening in the world around us.”

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. co-creators Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen were also on hand to answer questions about how the show will connect to the film. Tancharoen jokingly said, “It would be a good idea to do that.”

Whedon also sounded like he had already seen a cut of Infinity War, or at least he had been briefed on the grand scope of the film, because he said, “The film they made is enormous,” — the emphasis of which you can hear him say in the interview above — and that they “can’t survive on the planet without referencing it in some way.”

Hail Hydra

This wouldn’t be the first time Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has referenced the events of the films on their show. The entire plot of Captain America: Winter Soldier unfolded between two episodes of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: “End of the BeginningandTurn, Turn, Turn“. Coulson resurrected a helicarrier in Season 2, which Nick Fury used to rescue the Avengers in Sokovia during Age of Ultron. Coulson even referenced the death of Peggy Carter and the Sokovia Accords after the events of Captain America: Civil War.

Whether the events of Infinity War will come across a newspaper headline or will directly affect the show remains to be seen. But when General Hale told Coulson that the Confederacy was warning her of Earth’s impending destruction and a coming “war”, all that crossed our minds were Thanos and Infinity War. Perhaps this whole season of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been leading to this.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. airs Fridays at 9PM on ABC.

Will Bucky Become the New Captain America in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’?

WARNING: This post contains spoilers for Black Panther. Proceed with caution.

Bucky Barnes is a fan favorite when it comes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His conversion into the Winter Soldier and then rescue by Captain America has made him a tragic and redemptive character. And he’s continued to be an important focal point for the larger story that the MCU is carrying out.

But, with Avengers: Infinity War promising to shake up the Marvel Cinematic Universe as we know it, fans are beginning to speculate that Steve Rogers might not make it out alive. And if he doesn’t, will another character take up the mantle of Captain America? If so, will Bucky be that successor?

This theory certainly has merit. Heck, it’s already happened once before.

The Death of Captain America

captain america death
In the comics, the death of Steve Rogers led to Bucky taking over as Captain America.

In 2007, Marvel Comics was ending its huge event series Civil War. In the aftermath of that enormous showdown, Steve Rogers turned himself over to the authorities. He is assassinated under the orders of the Red Skull and dies on the steps of a courthouse. It was a huge moment in both the comics and the real world. Professional news outlets broadcast the story of Cap’s death, much like they did back in 1993 when DC Comics killed off Superman.

Following Cap’s death, Bucky Barnes — who had only recently been revealed to be the Winter Soldier — proceeded to take over as Captain America with a brand new suit that was built by Tony Stark. So, if Avengers: Infinity War follows the same path as the comics, this could easily be the way Bucky’s story goes.

Or, is there another contender for the shield?

captain america falcon
Falcon has also taken over as Captain America during certain runs in the comics.

Another character who has taken up the identity of Captain America in the comics is none other than Sam Wilson a.k.a. Falcon. He’s been a part of the MCU for nearly as many films as Bucky has. His friendship with Steve Rogers and his dedication to the ideals Steve holds dear have been a vital part of Sam’s story. If he does end up taking over as Captain America, it would be just as justified as Bucky stepping into the role.

Not to mention it would be a symbolic bit of representation for a black man to take over as the symbol of America. And with Black Panther‘s resounding success at the box office, it’s clear that audiences are ready to see that kind of diversity in their superhero movies.

Plus, it’s possible that Bucky might be taking on a very different identity in the future…

White Wolf

bucky black panther white wolf
At the end of ‘Black Panther,’ Bucky is given a very important nickname.

At the end of Black Panther, we see that Bucky has been recuperating in Wakanda under the care of T’Challa’s sister Shuri. He has begun to regain his memory and the effects of his brainwashing seem to have been nullified. During this scene, a group of Wakandan children called him White Wolf. That’s a name with some serious significance.

In the comics, White Wolf is the adoptive son of T’Chaka and the leader of a secret Wakandan police force tasked with carrying out covert and deadly missions. If the Marvel Cinematic Universe decides to do their own version of White Wolf, it could involve Bucky becoming a protector of Wakanda in a role very similar to White Wolf’s in the comics.

It certainly seems that way. Wakanda has taken care of him and if he is getting his memories and personality reprogrammed, it’s possible he will gain an even deeper affection for the African nation. We see him leading the charge with Wakandan soldiers in the trailers for Avengers: Infinity War. And it looks like Shuri is outfitting him with a brand new vibranium arm.

If I were betting money, I’d say that’s where Bucky will end up. But, we could also see him don the red, white, and blue if Cap does bite the dust. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens when Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters around the globe on April 27.

Why Thanos Should Be the Main Character of ‘Avengers: Infinity War’

Thanos has been a looming shadow over the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Ever since his surprise appearance at the end of The Avengers, fans have been eager to see the big bad in his full glory. Unfortunately, he’s been relegated to the shadows for the most part.

And if he’s going to be the main thrust of Avengers: Infinity War, then Marvel should break the mold and make him the lead character.

We Need to Know More

As of now, Thanos’s appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy (above) is the most time we’ve spent with the character. He’s purposefully been left nebulous to the audience in order to build anticipation. That worked the first time in The Avengers as an amazing surprise and tease of bigger things to come, but seeing it replicated in Avengers: Age of Ultron felt weak and added nothing to the character.

All we know about Thanos is that he wants the Infinity Stones because… well, exactly why does he want the Infinity Stones? I’m sure you can ascribe typical bad guy motives to his motivation — conquest, accumulation of power etc. — but the actual material we’ve been provided hasn’t given us enough to go on. We need to understand his motives. And frankly, his motives are so enormous that they deserve a proper amount of focus.

And making Thanos the protagonist would allow for that necessary focus. It would also force the audience to see Thanos’s intentions through his perspective, and the best villains often have intentions that the audience can understand. It’s the way they act on those intentions that make them villainous. All the heroic figures in Avengers: Infinity War have had their backstories and characters well-defined. Why not do the same for the most important villain of the series?

Speaking of villains…

Marvel Could Use a Really Great Villain

marvel villains thanos mcu
Marvel has been more miss than hit when it comes to their antagonists.

A common complaint about the Marvel Cinematic Universe is that its villain roster is pretty weak. Sure, we get the occasional Loki but the rest of their baddies are either killed off right away or are only there as dark reflections of the hero. I talked about this with Black Panther and I don’t see that particular issue going away.

However, Thanos offers a unique opportunity. He’s been played up as a huge threat to our heroes, so a lot of the posturing that MCU villains have to do upfront has been taken care of. Now, we could get a villain that isn’t just a physical threat to the good guys but a compelling one. Especially if we know he’s not going to be defeated right away. And if he causes real harm to the team, either through deaths or upheaval of the status quo, it would go a long way to making him a truly fearsome foe.

And positioning that awesome of a villain as our lead character would do something else…

A New Twist to the MCU

Probably the best part of making Thanos the main character would be that it’s a totally unheard-of take for a Marvel Cinematic Universe film. These movies have always been held up by the heroes. So much so that the element that gets fans most excited is seeing how the different heroes interact with each other. Well, what happens when you change the point-of-view to what would typically be the antagonist?

Granted, we are still going to be emotionally attached to the heroes’ stories. That’s obvious and necessary. But, this is an argument for shifting that viewpoint to the one causing trouble for our beloved Avengers. Giving Thanos the lion’s share of the screen time and funneling the events of the film through his outlook would give us something we’ve never had in the MCU before.

Luckily, directors Joe and Anthony Russo seem to agree with me on some level. They’ve said that Thanos is “almost one of the leads” in the film. That sounds promising. Here’s hoping that’s the case when Avengers: Infinity War opens on May 4.
