Omni 20 USB-C battery pack review: If you try this $200 battery, you’ll never go back

Best USB-C battery pack for laptops: Omni 20 USB-C review

I remember introducing the rest of my family to rechargeable battery packs about seven years ago, just as everyone was migrating from Blackberries onto a mixture of Android and Palm Pre (!) devices. At the time, a 2,000mAh device that fit in a backpack and gave you 60 percent more battery life was the most magical thing I could remember.

Fast-forward to 2018, and battery packs can do a whole lot more. Thanks to improvements in battery technology, a pack the size of a few decks of playing cards can charge your phone for a week, and USB-C technology means that much bigger and more powerful devices can take a charge.

‘The Family Hustle’ Is Not Coming Back Anytime Soon

It was just yesterday that it was reported that  T.I. and Tiny‘s Family Hustle TV show had been revived. Well, not so fast. T.I. says, Nope, it ain’t so.

T.I. took to Instagram to address the issue.

“To whom it may concern… if it ain’t come from me or @majorgirl it ain’t real. Family Hustle On Ice until further notice. Thx,” he wrote.

No word on whether or not the show will ever return. T.I. and Tiny seemed to be part of the reality TV curse which breaks up more couples than divorce lawyers do.

The estranged couple’s current marital status is unclear, although no divorce has yet been announced. Tiny just finished up a tour with Xscape, though the quartet still has some dates scheduled throughout the summer. Tiny also has a perfume, Major Girl that just launched.

Watch Ben Affleck (yes, Ben Affleck) predict Spotify and Netflix streaming way back in 2003

Turns out everyone’s favorite ahistorical Bean Town boy and resident Sad Man is more than just a pretty face.

That’s right, Ben Affleck, the star of such films as Gigli and Pearl Harbor, is so much more as this random (apparently) 2003 interview showing him basically predicting Spotify and Netflix streaming proves.

In the middle of a fast-paced rant about file-sharing, he notes that in the future everyone will have access to music and video on demand for an annual subscription fee.

“I think an annual subscription-based system is one that works,” he tells the interviewer. “It will be movies on demand but it will be a tiered structure,” he adds.   Read more…

Days after a video surfaced of Damon Dash running up on Lee Daniels at a Diana Ross concert demanding he get his money back, Daniels has vowed publicly to repay the millions he owes him.

The Empire creator sat down with TMZ on Friday to admit his wrongdoings and promise to pay the former Roc-A-Fella mogul his coins for investing in a few of his earlier films.

“When nobody in Hollywood was giving me money, after my Academy award, unprecedented with Halle Berry, nobody was giving me money,” he says in the brief clip.

“Damon’s crazy ass was crazy enough to give me money for The Woodsman and for Shadowboxer. The investment for Shadowboxer didn’t pay off.”

He added: “I am in the position now to get it to him, so I’m going to get it to him because I think that’s the right thing to do.”

“It sadly took that wake-up call during Diana’s “Reach Out And Touch Somebody’s Hand” for me to realize that and for me to sit with myself.”

Take a look:

Instagram Photo

Apparently, Dame saw the sit-down and wrote on Instagram that he accepts the Oscar-nominated director’s apology.

“We’re good bro,” he wrote in the caption. “Appreciate the honesty…time to move forward let’s forget the bubble gum shit and get the money.”

As we previously reported, Daniels reportedly promised Dash stake as the EP on the Richard Pryor biopic in addition to five percent of Daniels’ back end profits. The biopic never happened, leading to Dash suing Daniels for his contribution. Dame also sued Daniels in 2004 after the mogul says he loaned the director $ 2 million for the film The Woodsman, none of which Daniels has paid back.

Feminists Fought Back Against Family Separation in Los Angeles

Activists gathered Thursday to march around the Metropolitan Detention Center in downtown Los Angeles in response to the Trump administration’s policy of separation migrant parents and children detained at the border. Across the country, activists gathered at similar demonstrations in the last week to demand that the practice be reversed—and the families reunited. In Los Angeles, women formed the front line.

Activists at a rally to end family separation in Los Angeles. (Alicia Kay)

The Los Angeles event was organized by Children over Politics, United Healthcare Workers and The Coalition for Human Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA)—three women-led and women-centered organizations fighting for the rights of immigrant youth, women and families. Staff at CHIRLA are working on a daily basis within a number of communities to reverse the one-sided narrative the Trump administration has leveled against immigrants; Children over Politics provides a safe place where youth can access community, resources and help in making a difference around the issues that matter most to them; and United Healthcare Workers West is a local union housed under the larger Service Employees International Union (SEIU) fighting for immigrants afraid to access care due to the Trump administration’s hostile policies as well as the immigrants who can’t access it within its makeshift centers.

“Trauma lasts for generations,” Hortencia Armendariz, Community Division Director at United Healthcare Workers West, declared to Ms. at the march, noting that the U.S. already has a mental health crisis, and the lasting impacts of the Trump administration’s policies will undoubtedly compound it for another generation. Armendariz is also concerned about survivors of domestic violence that are seeking asylum in the U.S.—many of whom will now be effectively sentenced to death by another recent decision by the Trump administration closing its doors to asylum seekers facing such crimes across borders.

“SEIU-UHW denounces the decision of Attorney General Jeff Sessions to restrict asylum to victims fleeing domestic violence in their home countries,” she told Ms. “Women and children seek protection under our country’s asylum laws based on the violence and abuse that they suffer at the hands of spouses and family members because their governments are unable or unwilling to control these persecutors. The ruling places the lives of thousands at risk of deportation, death or serious physical harm.”

“We are human at the end of the day, and we should be treated as such,” Belle Lopez, a Children Over Politics facilitator, told Ms. reporters at the protest. “The lawmakers have the power in their hands to make real changes.” Lopez intends to continue organizing young people and encouraging them to be more involved; she also wants to register more young adults to vote, organize more actions like this week’s march and help young people learn more about politics.

Although the Trump administration, due to political pressure, reversed the so-called zero tolerance policy separating families along the border, it has not yet revealed a plan to reunite those already in detention. Thousands of traumatized children are being held in vacant Walmarts and tent cities, some sleeping in bunk beds within large metal cages and spending up to 22 hours a day indoors, pleading with officials to see their parents. Experts predict some will never see them again.

Activists have been demonstrating outside of federal and local government buildings and immigration detention centers for the last week, and nationwide protests of the Trump administration’s immigration policies are being organized as part of a day of action on June 30.

The zipline that will take you an hour back in time

Traveling between countries has become so predictable. You can catch a cruise or flight to almost anywhere these days, but where’s the excitement? We humans have a habit of getting bored of things so quickly that we never stop thinking about how to make things better. It’s that endless drive for improvement that spurred Englishman David Jarman to create the Limite Zero zip line that takes you from Spain to Portugal. The unique selling point? It takes you back in time!

How does it work?

Okay, so this zip line might not be a time machine, but it still technically does what it advertises. Due to the one hour time difference between the two countries, every time you travel along the zip line, you’re technically going back an hour in time. How’s that for déjà vu? It’s not often that you can cross through time zones as easily as this.

Making the trip

The zip line starts in Sanlucar de Guadiana, a localidad in Andalucia, Spain and ends in the Portuguese town of Alcoutim. Set more than 2300 feet in the air, the trip only lasts about 60 seconds, but passengers can reach speeds of around 50mph when flying high over the Spanish countryside. The zip line covers a distance of 720 meters, 150 of which is made up the Guadiana River which separates the two nations.

Once people land in Alcoutim, you’re free to explore the local area. There’s no time limit on your trip, so they can stick around for several hours if you want to experience what the town has to offer. When you’re ready to return, the service provides a ferry that’s just a five-minute walk from the landing zone. These ferries run regularly and are free to use, because the cost of them is included as part of the zip line payment. How much do you have to pay? Only 18 euros (which is around $ 22).

First of its kind

The Andalucia to Alcoutim zip line is the first of its kind ever to be created. The proximity of the two countries meant that setting up a structure like this was possible, although not necessarily an easy feat. However, Jarman admits that “I love a challenge” and that a zip line was the best way to “unite both places.” There had been a lot of discussions before his intervention about building a bridge over the river. However, no plans for this ever came to fruition, so Jarman took it upon himself to bring the two countries together in a much more exhilarating way.

Terms and conditions

People wishing to use this zip line have to abide by certain conditions. For instance, no-one under the age of 14 is legally allowed to use it. Those between the age of 14 and 16 must have parental guidance, and need to be collected by their represented adult once landing in Alcoutim. The zip line also has a weight restriction of 242lbs.

These limits are liable to change should the weather conditions force them to reconsider safety precautions for certain individuals.

We wish that traveling from one country to another could always be as exciting as this. There’s nothing like an adrenaline rush to make crossing over borders an experience you’ll never forget.

Restaurant Owners, Community Leaders Push Back On Sarah Jessica Parker’s War On Tip Credit

Activists, community leaders, and restaurant owners on Thursday gathered at the front of SJP Collections in New York as a voice of opposition against Sarah Jessica Parker’s support for ending the tipped wage credit, which they say threatens employees and restaurant owners.

In New York State, tipped workers are paid a lower minimum wage, but they must earn at least the full minimum wage when tips are included. The difference between the tipped wage and the full minimum wage is called the tip credit, which Minister Kirsten John Foy said allows restaurant owners to keep labor costs down while keeping it affordable for people to dine out.

Early in March, Parker, along with 15 other actresses invoking the #MeTooMovement, wrote a letter to New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, in support of the One Fair Wage effort, noting that 70% of restaurant servers are women and that research has shown “how relying on tips creates a more permissive work environment where customers feel entitled to abuse women in exchange for ‘service.’” The actresses, including Jane Fonda, Natalie Portman, Lily Tomlin, Amy Poehler, Reese Witherspoon, Brie Larson, Debra Messing, Ashley Judd, and Sarah Silverman, urged the governor to do away with the state’s tip credit for restaurant workers.

A countereffort of 500 restaurant workers organized by Maggie Raczynski, a bartender at the Clifton Outback Steakhouse, produced a letter of their own.

“You’ve been misled that we earn less than minimum wage and that we’re somehow helpless victims of sexual harassment. “Thank you for your concern. But we don’t need your help and we’re not asking to be saved,” they wrote.

In April, the New York Post reported that a small-screen actor wavered on her decision to sign the letter to the governor. In her email sent to the Restaurant Workers of America—which opposes any compensation changes—the actress, who is unidentified, apologized, through an agent representing her. “She sends her deepest apologies and never intended to insult the restaurant professionals. She would like to rescind her signature from the letter that was sent to Governor Cuomo. Should we do that through you or where it originated from?” But she later decided to keep her name on the letter.

“Sarah Jessica Parker has weighed into a debate where she’s not fully informed. She has weighed into a debate where there is a whole swath and section of the industry, mostly people of color who are not being heard,” Foy said at a press conference in New York on Thursday.

tip credit

According to the United States Department of Labor:

“Tip credit permits an employer to take a tip credit towards its minimum wage obligation for tipped employees equal to the difference between the required cash wage (which must be at least $ 2.13) and the federal minimum wage. Thus, the maximum tip credit that an employer can currently claim under the FLSA section 3(m) is $ 5.12 per hour (the minimum wage of $ 7.25 minus the minimum required cash wage of $ 2.13). Under certain circumstances, an employer may be able to claim an additional overtime tip credit against its overtime obligations.”

After seven different hearings and a recommendation by a wage board in 2015, Cuomo and the state’s labor commissioner, Roberta Reardon, will decide whether to eliminate the tip credit, which Cisse Elhadji, the executive chef and co-owner of Renaisance and two Ponty Bistro locations in Harlem, could potentially shut down his business.

“Minimum right now, I have 30 to 40 people working for me, imagine I shut down my place, all these people will (have to) go look for another job,” Elhadji said. “We need help, but this is not going to help us.”

Supporters of the argument for a consistent minimum wage plan say it would reduce wage theft by employers in industries with tipped workers, who are often women, minorities, and immigrants. While Foy agrees with his progressive counterparts that it is indeed time to raise wages for American fast food workers, “but to compare McDonald’s to Melba’s is a folly.”

“It is not appropriate and [it’s] unwise; neither is it economically viable to raise wages at the expense of the existence of the business,” he said.

Late in May, Parker hosted a fundraiser for the One Fair Wage campaign, an organization fighting for increased minimum wage nationally. The purchased tickets went for as much as $ 50,000 according to the release by the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce and the event had to move venues when the location was publicly revealed, to avoid protesters.

Thousands of servers have attended the tip credit elimination hearings, submitted testimonies. Two more hearings are scheduled for Tuesday, June 19 at Hostos Community College and Wednesday, June 27 at Hunter College.

Directed by OVO collaborator Karena Evans, the video is set in the world of Degrassi a decade after Drake/Jimmy Brooks’ graduation. Starting off with Drake waking up on the floor of the Air Canada Centre, the 6 God gets a reminder for the Class of 2007 reunion at Degrassi Community School. After rushing to the tailors to get outfitted, Drake and castmate Shane Kippel hop in a yellow LaFerrari and make their way to the gathering. Got Busted Running a Rogue Lemonade Stand? Country Time’s Got Your Back

It’s a tale that’s more than a century old.

Kids want to earn some extra cash — to buy whatever it is kids buy these days (are yo-yos still cool?) — so they decide to sling some lemonade on their street.

They hit up their parents for supplies, whether it’s fresh lemons or that powdery stuff we all know and love, and slave away to make the best lemonade their cul-de-sac has ever seen.

If they’re serious lemonade sellers, they might have a fancy set-up, or they could be like 8-year-old me and drag the living room coffee table out to the sidewalk.

They go through all of this trouble, with dreams of dollar bills dancing through their heads, only to be shut down by The Man.

That’s right, kids across the country are getting hit with cease-and-desist orders and slapped with fines for running lemonade stands without proper permits.

In 2015, authorities closed down two sisters in Texas for selling lemonade without a peddler’s permit. Three girls in Georgia had their lemonade dreams squashed because they didn’t have a business license, peddler’s permit or a food permit. Yikes.

Country Time Lemonade is sick of it and ready to fight the good fight.

Country Time Takes a Stand

The popular lemonade brand known for its powdered mixes is standing up for budding entrepreneurs everywhere by offering “Legal-Ade.”

If city officials shut down or fine a lemonade stand this summer, Country Time Lemonade will provide the operators reimbursement of up to $ 300.

Not only will the company cover the costs of any fines incurred from 2017 through this summer, it will also reimburse lemon-preneurs who apply for proper permits before setting up shop.

To apply for reimbursement, a parent or legal guardian can head over to Country Time’s Legal-Ade website. Just upload a photo of the fine or permit and have the kiddos describe what their lemonade stand means to them.

The site says that payments will be made throughout the summer, until hitting the limit of $ 60,000.

But that’s not all: Country Time posted a video on Twitter that vows to donate $ 1 for every retweet — up to $ 500,000 — to offer Legal-Ade to kids next summer and beyond.

Lemonade stands are not only a great way for kids to earn extra cash but also a learning experience. They can teach math, customer service, supply-and-demand and, our favorite, how to handle money.

So don’t let the fear of fines or a visit from the local police deter you or your kids from taking on this venture.

I think Country Time said it best on its site: “Life doesn’t always give you lemons, but when it does, you should be able to make and share lemonade with the neighborhood without legal implications.”

Melania Trump Is Back After A Month Away

(AP Photo/Andrew Harnik)

WASHINGTON (AP) — Melania Trump’s disappearing act is over.

The first lady showed herself in public Wednesday for the first time in nearly a month, seated alongside her husband, President Donald Trump, for a briefing on the federal government’s preparedness for the hurricane season that began June 1.

The routine meeting at Federal Emergency Management Agency headquarters took on outsized significance after the White House revealed that Mrs. Trump would accompany her husband. Prior to Wednesday, she had not been seen off the White House grounds since May 10.

The first sighting of the first lady came as she and the president strolled down the walkway from the Oval Office and climbed into “the Beast,” his idling limousine. She was wearing a belted trench coat and her customary high heels.

Minutes later, Mrs. Trump took her seat alongside the president at one end of a long conference table as the FEMA briefing began, appearing to be her usual self.

“She’s doing great. She went through a little rough patch, but she’s doing great,” Trump said at the top of the meeting, surrounded by his Cabinet as several governors and other officials participated by video conference. “And we’re very proud of her. She’s done a fantastic job as first lady.”

He added: “The people love you. The people of our country love you. So, thank you honey.”

The first lady smiled and nodded as her husband and others spoke during the portion of the briefing that was open to journalists. She and the president later spent a few minutes greeting FEMA employees. Mrs. Trump stepped with ease, smiled and was heard telling one worker “thank you very much.”

It was her first appearance away from the White House since she and the president traveled to Joint Base Andrews to welcome home three Americans who had been released from detention in North Korea.

Several days later, the first lady underwent a procedure to treat a kidney condition. She spent five days in the hospital before returning to the White House on May 19 to continue her recuperation. She held private meetings with her staff and worked on projects, though she skipped a few public events where her participation seemed likely, including a Medal of Honor presentation and a sports “field day” for professional athletes and kids on the South Lawn.

But speculation mounted as week after week passed without a public appearance, spawning wild theories about where she might be and what might have happened to her.

The first lady addressed the issue on Twitter last week, saying: “I see the media is working overtime speculating where I am & what I’m doing. Rest assured, I’m here at the @WhiteHouse w my family, feeling great, & working hard on behalf of children & the American people!”

Her husband was less charitable Wednesday.

“The Fake News Media has been so unfair, and vicious, to my wife and our great First Lady, Melania,” he wrote on Twitter. “During her recovery from surgery they reported everything from near death, to facelift, to left the W.H. (and me) for N.Y. or Virginia, to abuse. All Fake, she is doing really well!”

Trump also paired the text of the tweets with video of himself and the first lady on his Facebook page.

Fox News Channel, Trump’s favorite cable network, aired a segment this week in which the hosts of one of its shows criticized news reports about the first lady. Kellyanne Conway, one of Trump’s top advisers, echoed the criticism.

“I think it’s a shame that most of the coverage of the first lady in the last several weeks has been about conspiracy theories that have no basis in fact,” Conway told reporters at a breakfast meeting.

Earlier this week, the first lady participated in a White House event for military families. Journalists were not granted access out of respect for the families, meaning Mrs. Trump was seen only by those who attended.

But video posted on Twitter showed the first lady strolling into the East Room accompanied by the president. She later tweeted event photos that showed her sitting next to the president.

The Latest Gig for Jay Ellis? Kicking Back with Mount Gay Rum

You might be sitting at home waiting for the premiere of the third season of Insecure this summer and wondering when you’re going to get your next taste of everyone’s favorite ex-boyfriend, Lawrence. But the man behind the role, Jay Ellis, is out here busy living his best life.

As a matter of fact, that’s what the actor (and this year’s American Black Film Festival ambassador) is all about for his latest gig with Mount Gay rum.

Earlier this year, Ellis helped Mount Gay, which is celebrating its 315th anniversary, bring its new campaign to life. He kicked off the first installation of Time Well Spent with an après-ski event in Telluride, Colorado.

Before you come check him out at ABFF in Miami, June 13–17, check out what he had to say about how he likes to drink, eat, travel, and unwind:

The importance of downtime

“Taking time to connect, download, and decompress is HUGE to mental health, productivity, creativity and it’s also a time to look back on the day a reflect on the great things going on in your life because sometimes they can be hard to see through all the craziness of a busy day,” Ellis told AOL.

“I do anything from reading a book or watching a movie to going to dinner or drinks with friends depending on the day. But I have to say there’s nothing like laughs and drinks with friends.”

Most surprising? He’s hands-on when it comes to relaxing. “I also love building things,” he told Forbes. “I’ve built closets, and installed sinks, toilets, and countertops for friends.”

Jay Ellis

Good friends, good food, good spirits

“I like celebrating—if you want to call it that—around a good meal at the end of a day. It allows my friends and I to talk about what we did during the day and reflect on it more,” Ellis shared with The Manual.

When it comes to his drinks, he continued: “I love something smooth, something with flavor, but I also love things that have a history to them as well. I love being able to learn how the spirit is made and where it comes from.”

Ellis admitted to Forbes that his favorite food is Italian, so it makes sense that his favorite destinations are South Italy and the Mediterranean. “There’s great weather and seafood,” he said. “It’s quiet, with insanely beautiful water, and locals will invite you into their homes.”

FASHION DEAL UPDATE:

Come one, come all: Our annual Art Yard Sale is back, Sun 3rd June, 2018

Step inside our Brighton Fringe Festival street market, and buy art direct from the artists who create it

The Fringe Festival event we’ve been waiting for the entire month of May is almost here – it’s so close we can almost touch it! Yes, we’re talking about the annual artrepublic Art Yard Sale and yes, maybe we’re a little biased. But we’re excited because we genuinely love sharing this event with you.

artrepublic Art Yard Sale

This coming Sunday (3rd June 2018) we’ll be setting up shop/ stalls in Jubilee Square in Brighton where, between 11am and 5pm, a great selection of artrepublic’s family of artists will be turning into market hawkers for the day, selling their artworks to you direct.

Here’s a taste of last year’s event

If you’ve never been to the Art Yard Sale before and that’s all a little too vague for you, this is what you need to know:

The artrepublic Art Yard Sale has been running for the past three years and, despite the crazy weather in its first year, the event has become bigger and more popular each year.

The lineup of artists changes each year, so you never experience the same sale twice. This year you’ll find a range of talent from Art + Believe to Joe Webb, via RYCA, COY! Communications, Maria Rivans and Benjamin Thomas Taylor, to name just a few.

COY! Communications Benjamin Thomas Taylor Joe Webb
COY! Communications Benjamin Thomas Taylor Joe Webb

The joy of the sale is that the artists themselves sell their work to you directly, whether it’s limited edition prints, one-off originals or special-price works. The pieces cross a whole range of styles, techniques and finishes, so there really is something for everyone.

artrepublic ‘funny’ money is the only money accepted by the artists on site, for various reasons including general security. It’s not quite the same thing as Monopoly money, but it works like this: on the day of the sale, you can change regular cash (pound sterling, that is) for artrepublic money in our nearby gallery on Brighton’s Bond Street, between 9 and 11am. You can also change money at the sale itself, but we would recommend doing it early so you don’t miss out on the art you have your eye on. (See more about our ‘funny’ money T&Cs at the Art Yard Sale website)

As well as art, there’s live music and performances throughout the day from the best of Brighton’s very own buskers – show them a little love if you’re enjoying their work, too.

We think that’s enough reasons for you to come join in the fun in the North Laines this Sunday, 3rd June, 11am-5pm. Help us see the Brighton Fringe Festival out in style.

If you need any further information about the Art Yard Sale, visit artyardsale.co.uk or drop into the gallery to ask one of our art advisors.

For more news stories and events visit our Brighton Gallery page.

‘My Life Is at Risk of Being Undermined.’ Morgan Freeman Pushes Back Against Misconduct Allegations

Actor Morgan Freeman is maintaining that his behavior should not be classified as sexual assault, in the wake of harassment and misconduct allegations leveled against him earlier this week.

“I am devastated that 80 years of my life is at risk of being undermined, in the blink of an eye, by Thursday’s media reports,” Freeman said in a statement provided to TIME late Friday night. “All victims of assault and harassment deserve to be heard. And we need to listen to them. But it is not right to equate horrific incidents of sexual assault with misplaced compliments or humor.”

A CNN report published Thursday included accounts from eight people who accused Freeman of inappropriate behavior or harassment. Many of these alleged instances included what were perceived as inappropriate comments from Freeman. One woman claimed he once repeatedly tried to lift her skirt and asked if she was wearing underwear; another said the actor made so many comments about her appearance that she and her assistants stopped wearing fitted clothing around him. CNN reporter Chloe Melas also said the actor called her “ripe” when she interviewed him while six months pregnant.

Freeman, who issued an apology shortly after CNN’s story broke Thursday, said in the second statement that he uses jokes and humor to make people “feel appreciated and at ease around me,” though he added that, “Clearly I was not always coming across the way I intended.”

Still, Freeman maintains in the statement that his behavior never crossed certain lines.

“I did not create unsafe work environments. I did not assault women. I did not offer employment or advancement in exchange for sex,” Freeman said in the statement. “Any suggestion that I did so is completely false.”

CBS Fall Lineup Heads Back to the ’80s with ‘Murphy Brown’ and ‘Magnum P.I.’

CBS is going back in time this fall with the return of Murphy Brown and Magnum P.I., two of the six new shows added to the network’s lineup.

Suicide Squad‘s Jay Hernandez will be taking over the role made famous by Tom Selleck in the Magnum P.I. reboot, which tells the story of a former Navy SEAL who uses his military training to become a private investigator.

Magnum P.I.
Jay Hernandez in the 'Magnum P.I.' reboot

Meanwhile, Candace Bergen will be returning to the titular role in Murphy Brown 20 years after the series ended its 10-year, Emmy-winning run. But things are very different for the broadcast news legend this time around, having to deal with a journalism world of “fake news” and 24-hour cable.

Murphy Brown will be joining Chuck Lorre comedies The Big Bang Theory, Young Sheldon, and Mom on Thursday nights, while the reboot of Magnum P.I. will air on Mondays. That means the Monday night comedy block that used to be two-hours long at CBS will now be one and include two new sitcoms, The Neighborhood and Happy Together.

The latter stars Damon Wayans Jr. and Amber Stevens West as a married couple who reconnect with their youth when they let a pop star obsessed with their ordinary suburban life move in with them.

The Neighborhood follows the story of a man who moves his family from the Midwest to a neighborhood in Los Angeles where suddenly not everyone looks the same. While he remains unphased by the new diversity in his life, his opinionated next-door neighbor Calvin, played by Cedric the Entertainer, is worried the family will mess up the culture on their street.

The final new shows that made the cut for the fall lineup are dramas FBI and God Friended Me. And that last one is actually exactly what it sounds like — an atheist accepts a friend request from God on Facebook and begins unintentionally helping others in need because of it. CBS explained it has similarities to Touched by an Angel, but in a more contemporary setting.

And from the team responsible for the Law & Order franchise, FBI is a drama about the members of New York’s Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Two other new dramas, The Code and The Red Line, and new comedy Fam will be held for midseason, along with returning shows Instinct, Elementary, Man with a Plan, and Life.

Check out the full CBS fall lineup with the schedule below.

Bestselling Author Jessica Knoll Is Back with a Real Housewives-Inspired Page-Turner,The Favorite Sister

Fans of Real Housewives in need of a summer beach read, rejoice — Jessica Knoll has got you covered. The New York Times bestselling author’s debut novel, Luckiest Girl Alive, was the breakout hit of 2015, instantly topping the bestseller list for months and garnering praise from celebs such as Jessica Alba, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Reese Witherspoon, the last of whom even optioned the film rights.

Now Knoll is back with a second page-turner, stomach-churner of a book, The Favorite Sister. The smart and sharply written thriller is sure to be the beach read you’ll hear everyone raving about this summer, and it’s already on the radar of celebs like UnREAL star Shiri Appleby and former 2 Broke Girls star Beth Behrs.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

The plot centers around two fiercely competitive sisters who are cast on Goal Diggers, a Real Housewives of New York-esque reality TV show about ambitious, entrepreneurial women who will do anything to succeed — even commit murder.

After one of the sisters ends up dead, the plot unfolds through the eyes of the show’s stars to reveal who killed her, how and why. Reading this book is as addictive as scrolling through your Instagram or Twitter feed, and certainly as binge-worthy as any reality TV marathon.

Knoll admitted to NPR that she’s spent a fair amount of time indulging in the “guilty pleasure” of binging reality TV herself, which certainly shows in her extraordinarily familiar — yet still surprising — RHONY-inspired characters. “It’s an homage to them. I love these women. I really do,” she told NPR’s Lulu Garcia-Navarro.

“For whatever you have to say about them, they are dynamic women. They have strong personalities. They’re loud. And we don’t get to see women act like that very often in our culture, so I think it’s something worth celebrating.”

The novel, out May 15, is already popping up on summer reading lists — you can pick up a copy at your local bookstore or order it online here.

SPECIAL DEAL UPDATE:

Back Once Again: the Art Yard Sale at Brighton Fringe Festival

From street artists to selling art on the streets of Brighton, close out your Festival experience at this year’s Art Yard Sale.

The Brighton Festival and Brighton Fringe Festival 2018 may have only just started, but if we know anything about these two annual arts events – which are among the biggest in the UK – it’s this: they fly by. You barely get your hands on the programmes and circle the things you want to see, before the tickets for all the art, comedy, theatre and family events have flown out the doors of the ticket office… and taken both of the May Bank Holidays and David Shrigley (this year’s main Festival guest director) with them.

So, with that in mind, consider this your five-minute (or three-week) warning:
The annual Art Yard Sale is back on 3 June, and we’re planning to close the 2018 Brighton Fringe Festival on a high.

If you’ve never been to the Art Yard Sale before, this is what you have been missing… The opportunity to buy contemporary art, direct from the artists who create it, all in a fun, family-friendly environment in Brighton’s North Laine. Yes, you get to meet the likes of Bonnie and Clyde, Dan Hillier, Eelus and a whole host of other artrepublic favourites, have a chat with them and buy their work. And better still, all of the artists who participate are sharing (and selling) artworks and prints that have either been created specifically for the Art Yard Sale event, or are being sold at a one-off reduced price that you won’t find anywhere else.

The unique art event was started in 2015 after we at artrepublic, the main visual art sponsor of Brighton Fringe Festival for many years, decided it was about time we ran our own event.  ‘We wanted a way to get involved in the energy of the Festival season ourselves,’ says Lindsay Alkin, the event’s founder. ‘The result is the Art Yard Sale, which fits perfectly with the local, hands-on, creative ethos of the Fringe.’

The line-up of artists changes each year, so you won’t get the same experience twice, but there is never a shortage of creatives from the artrepublic family who want to get involved.

For us, it’s all about embracing the festival spirit and sharing new things.

‘We aim to bring you a really broad selection of art – from street art to illustration to sculpture – so people can discover new artists and types of work that they may not have thought about before,’ says Lindsay. ‘It sounds really cheesy, but it’s genuinely amazing to see all these people coming to the Art Yard Sale and leaving with a big smile on their faces because of art. That’s what it should do.’

This year’s lineup is yet to be finalised, so keep an eye on our upcoming blogs, the Art Yard Sale website and the artrepublic social media channels – over the next few weeks we’ll be sharing updates about this year’s event.

Just back from: Los Angeles, California

Hannah Karns, Lonely Planet’s Midwest Sales Director, recently returned from a trip to Los Angeles, California.

Tell us more… My husband and I spontaneously decided to venture to Los Angeles for five days in December. We were anxious to escape the Chicago winter, and LA promised sun and temperatures in the 70s. With an Airbnb booked and the Lonely Planet Los Angeles guide downloaded via the Guides app, we were ready for our adventure.

Good grub? Despite hearing that LA isn’t particularly walkable, there was plenty to explore on foot in our neighbourhood of Silver Lake and Echo Park. We were thrilled because on our travels we’ve found walking to be the best way to get a feel for a new place.

We really enjoyed wandering around the shops and foodie spots in our local area, stopping in at the Night+Market Song for some delicious Grapow khai dao (minced chicken, garlic and rice topped with a fried egg) and the Fat Dragon for spicy Sichuan wontons and ma po tofu (a spicy tofu stew). With Pine and Crane’s lovely Dan Dan noodles in between the two, we had quite the flavorful food crawl in just a few blocks.

If you do one thing… I would recommend hiking to the Griffith Observatory. The trail entrance near the Greek Theater was convenient with plenty of parking, the hike was relatively easy (though it is uphill most of the way there) and the views of the city and famous Hollywood sign were great (and make for a lovely sunset setting) – not to mention the whole experience was completely free!

Local gem? From the unassuming exterior, we didn’t quite know what to make of the Thirsty Crow bar. We were pleasantly surprised, however, to discover an old-school, speakeasy-style interior, with friendly bartenders and cozy, red leather corner booths in the back. We were able to relax, enjoy the jazz music and soak up the candlelit ambience.

Bizarre encounter? Though we didn’t see any celebrities, we did have a different kind of memorable sighting. As we made our way back down the Griffith Observatory trail at dusk, we heard a rustling in the hillside shrubbery. At first I thought it was two dogs who’d got off their leashes, but what emerged from the brush was in fact a deer and its fawn. They eyed us suspiciously, determined we were not a threat and swiftly sprang up the hill with surprising agility. We didn’t see them again, but they were the talk of that evening.

Fave activity? A real highlight of the trip was seeing a show at the Comedy Store. My husband is a huge stand-up fan and this is a legendary spot in Los Angeles. We saw big name acts back-to-back-to-back, and laughed so hard we cried several times. We didn’t want to leave the show – it was promising to go well beyond midnight – but we had to catch our flight early the next day.

Trump is putting the US back on top

During a recent dinner, a liberal friend gave me a shock. “I didn’t vote for Trump,” she said, “but I have to admit I like that our country is on top again. I’m proud that we’re the most powerful country and that others respect our power.” Hear, hear, I’ll drink to that. It’s premature to…

Apple needs to get back in the innovation business

Apple reported its earnings last week, and the tech giant said nothing alarming — no massive misses or lowered expectations. The report in itself was bland, like unsweetened apple sauce — not bad if you’re counting calories, but not nearly as good as when Mom added some cinnamon and sugar. And that’s exactly what Apple’s…

I’m So Sorry, But Neon Is Back

Here’s something you maybe weren’t expecting to hear: You’ll be wearing neon very soon. Garishly bright hues might have taken the backseat to minimalist camels, creams, and even soft pastels, but this summer, things are going high-voltage. The key to pulling off neon pieces in 2018 is finding a way to make all that saturation work in your favor. Wearing color head to toe, whether it be coordinating or clashing, is surprisingly the easiest way to get in on the trend.

While embracing full-on color can seem intimidating, try styling similar hues together in brighter and softer tones like a soft yellow with a highlighter hue or a dusty pink with a bright bubblegum. Below you’ll find seven outfit ideas to help you embrace the neon hues that will be major for summer and some shopping ideas so you can try out the look.

While full-on color might be intimidating, matching from head to toe is actually one of the easiest ways to test out the trend. Keep accessories simple and you’re good to go.

Available in size FR38.
Available in sizes 35 to 40.
Available in sizes UK10 to UK14.
Available in sizes XS to M.
Available in size IT44.
Available in one size.
Available in sizes XS to XL.
Available in size M.
Available in sizes M to XXL.
Available in sizes 16 to 20.
Available in sizes 0 to 8.
Available in sizes 10 to 18.
Available in sizes 0 to 4.  Now you’re all set to try the trend.

A one-and-done method is ideal for testing this trend, so try going for a dress in a bold pink or yellow. Need something a little pared back? Try a bag or sunglasses.

Since neon hues can feel like a big commitment, pick your go-to color and stick with it. Whether it be something warm like a yellow or orange or a cooler hue, know what works with your skin tone.

Feeling especially adventurous? Consider clashing neon hues in unexpected ways. Things will come together despite any initial misgivings.

Unsure of what to style with something so colorful? One easy trick is to finish off a neon ensemble with a pair of white shoes. Simple and summery without drawing too much attention away from the rest of your look.

If you find brighter hues particularly intimidating, try styling with natural materials like wicker or simple accessories like metal hoops or a summery net bag.

If you’re looking to try the trend without doing too much shopping, try going tonal by layering similar-hued styles already sitting in your closet. Suddenly, pieces you never before would have worn together work seamlessly.

Patton Oswalt Looks Back at His Late Wife’s Serial-Killer Obsession

Gregg DeGuire/Getty

Michelle McNamara had been obsessed with cold cases since the age of 14, when the murder of a neighbor went unsolved. She eventually became a journalist and blogger, whose True Crime Diary website became sort of a clearinghouse for information about unresolved cases. “Unsolved murders became an obsession,” McNamara has said. “I was a hoarder of ominous and puzzling details.”

“Michelle became interested in these cases for two reasons,” adds her husband, actor/comedian Patton Oswalt: “Because they were cold cases, and because she could see in real time how connectivity was changing and more information was being digitized. So the combination of those two had intriguing potential.”

McNamara first became aware of the man she dubbed the Golden State Killer in 2007. From 1976 until 1986, this psychopath was responsible for 50 sexual assaults and 10 murders, first in the Sacramento area and later in Orange County, California. Also known to police as the East Area Rapist (EAR), he had disappeared from view, his identity a mystery. But his sick legend lived on. So McNamara decided to write a book about him, hoping it would help her discover his identity.

Christina Aguilera Is Back With a New Rap-Forward Single

After six long years, Christina Aguilera is coming back with a whole new vibe on “Accelerate,” her newest single and accompanying video, released May 3 off of an upcoming June 15 album.

Grammy-winning artist Aguilera, perhaps best known for classics like “Genie in a Bottle,” Mulan‘s “Reflection” and “Dirrty” (not to mention her later-era hits like “Ain’t No Other Man” and collaborations like “Lady Marmalade”) has been busy over the past few years as a coach on The Voice, grooming other wannabe stars for the spotlight. But no longer. “Accelerate,” featuring rappers Ty Dolla $ ign and 2 Chainz, is a major reintroduction that leans heavily hip-hop. It was produced by Kanye West and is a stylistic pivot from much of the pop she’s focused on creating over her career; in a Billboard interview, she explained that her whole new era will draw more from R&B and hip-hop influences.

“Accelerate, c’mon babe, pick up your speed,” she sing-raps over a spare beat. “Stamina, fill me up, that’s what I need.” Ty Dolla $ ign assists on the chorus, while 2 Chainz gets a verse to himself. It’s a song that’s constantly switching it up, from the backing beat to the foregrounded vocals. The moody, stylized music video shows off Aguilera in minimal makeup and slicked-back platinum hair — a departure from her previous mode of full-on glamor.

This is just the first taste of Liberation, which includes 15 tracks with features from Demi Lovato and Keida and Shenseea. Aguilera executive produced it herself.

CNN’s ‘United Shades Of America with W. Kamau Bell’ Is Back And Ready to Listen

CNN’s Emmy Award-winning United Shades of America with W. Kamau Bell is back on the air for its third season.

The eight-part docuseries follows the comedian as he visits communities around the country, deftly deploying his unique brand of humor to explore issues of race, history, and the lived experiences of people who don’t typically make the news. But even at moments that could have been profoundly confrontational, Bell has consistently delivered more light than heat, and a master class in having “uncomfortable conversations.”

This year, Bell says to expect more of the same.

“I think that Americans are tired of manufactured conflict,” he tells raceAhead. “This is not going to be a season of my sitting down with an evil villain or ‘bait and switches’,” the kind of drama television likes to provide. “This is going to be me talking to interesting people whose voices aren’t heard enough.”

There were some potentially villainous moments even in the first season, which began airing in 2016.

The series opened with “The New KKK,” in which Bell met with actual Klan members in full hooded regalia by the side of a dark, country road. He even attended a “cross-lighting.” In addition to being gutsy, it established Bell’s ability to manage substantive conversations with people who believe horrific things without flinching or pandering.

But it was a different time.

“We didn’t realize how lucky we were that [season one] happened during the last year of Obama,” he said, a time when white supremacy felt less like an active threat. “We could really pick and choose what we wanted to talk about then,” he says.

By the time that season two rolled around, it felt like the country was on fire.

“With Trump offending so many people and saying so many outrageous racist, sexist and ableist things, it was like the news was handing out homework assignments,” he says.

Bell talked to immigrants, refugees and advocates, explored Chicago gang violence, visited Muslims in small town America, and even headed to coal country. All vital stuff, but still a laundry list of Trumpian talking points. At some point, he says, “it got exhausting trying to keep up with the news.”

Bell, who may be best known for his comedy, has excelled in the real world, as he stepped away from the relative detachment of the stand-up stage to meet people where they are and as they are, in the middle of their sometimes messy lives.

It’s a transition that many who speak from a position of authority struggle to achieve.

Bell’s secret is empathy. “I’ve learned that the more I can make it clear to people that I’m there for them, that I’m lucky to be there with them, it works,” he says,”and not that they’re lucky to be on TV with me–no, no, no.” The crew have become adept at making regular folks feel comfortable. “We don’t put the show before someone’s feelings and concerns.”

And, as a comic who specializes in sociopolitical content, he also comes prepared. “The show has taught me that I have a pretty good capacity to sit and listen,” a necessary first step to participating a tough conversation. “Part of being a standup comic is being an active listener- reading the room and paying attention to everybody,” he says.

But that can be hard to swallow for some. Bell got some flack for his interview with white supremacist Richard Spencer, in part, for talking to him at all.

“Look, I’m not gonna act like I’m not always second guessing myself on everything,” he laughs. “But people complained that I was giving him a platform and normalizing him. I reject that wholeheartedly. These racist ideas are in the White House now, we have to talk about them.”

Part of his frustration is that the series is filmed well in advance, so much of the news about Spencer–like when the white nationalist got sucker-punched, for example–happened months after the United Shades crew had come and gone. “Look, I was never going to punch the guy, but I would have brought it up,” says Bell. And he’s braced for similar dissonance this year. “We did a whole thing about HBCUs without knowing that Beyonce was going to claim them at Coachella,” he laughs.

But as a long-form documentary series, Bell’s commitment to shrugging off a news peg is smart. “We can tweak a little bit later, but the story we want to tell is the story we get to tell.”

Bell mentions one upcoming episode that came about because of a Twitter conversation.

He was invited to Boston by Harpreet Singh, the founder and co-CEO of Experfy, a Harvard Innovation Lab-based big data consultancy, and co-founder of the Sikh Coalition, to talk about hate crimes experienced by Sikhs.

The interviews included many members of the Sikh community in Boston and Yuba City, Calif. It was hardly breaking news; it took six months for the segment to be complete, including fact-checking and editing. “It turns out that we made the first-ever hour of television talking about their faith, which wasn’t our plan,” says Bell. “These are just people who we don’t know but should.”

Here’s another thing that he’s thinking about as season three launches: The country is united by a lot of collective stress at the moment.

“We’re more aware of bad things when they happen,” he says, citing the immediate outcry over the killing of Stephon Clark, who was unarmed, by the Sacramento police.”That would not have been a national story even a few years ago.” While he concedes that’s some form of progress, “I do think we all have to figure out how to process these things.”

Giving back is the only way forward, he says.

“A key part of dealing with this era in America is figuring out what you can do — using your privilege or your dollars or your free time to help.” A little goes a long way. “I’m a big fan of Donor’s Choose,” a non-profit that lets people pay for supplies on wish lists posted by classroom teachers. “It’s a little thing I can do where I feel I’m being productive even when I get caught up in the malaise of life.”

The show returns April 29 at 10:15 p.m. ET/PT.

The Paralympics Fire Back After Trump Calls Them ‘Tough to Watch’

Hours after President Donald Trump called the Paralympic Games “tough to watch,” the organization called on the President to join the billions of viewers around the world who are inspired by the competition.

“Record numbers of people around the world are not finding @Paralympics tough to watch,” the organization tweeted on Saturday. “Billions of viewers now take in the Paralympics in hundreds of countries around the world. We hope the US President continues to watch and be inspired by the Paralympics.”

The tweet comes in response to a remark Trump made at a Friday ceremony celebrating this year’s Olympic and Paralympic Games in PyeongChang, South Korea. “What happened with the Paralympics was so incredible and so inspiring to me,” Trump said at the ceremony, according to The Daily Beast. “And I watched — it’s a little tough to watch too much, but I watched as much as I could.”

The remark sparked immediate backlash online, with many recalling an incident during the 2016 presidential campaign when Trump appeared to mock a reporter with physical disability. Trump denied the accusation.

Just back from: Madagascar

Ellie and her husband snap a selfie on a beach in Madagascar

Newly-weds Ellie and Josh enjoy some downtime on the beach © Ellie Simpson

Ellie Simpson, Traveller Communications Analyst at Lonely Planet, recently returned from a trip to Madagascar.

Tell us more… My husband and I spent an epic three weeks on our honeymoon in Madagascar, complete with some of the most extraordinary animal encounters of our lives, insane modes of transport and some proper time out relaxing on the beach.

In a nutshell… Madagascar is a dream destination for the intrepid traveller, and although it can really test you at times it’s always worth the effort.

Defining moment? There are only seven main roads on the whole island, and a great percentage of these national routes are made up of potholes. Some of them even turn into rivers, where you and your vehicle have to be rafted over by the ferryman. It makes for quite an adventure getting from place to place!

A group of Malagasy men help rescue a 4WD that's got stuck on a sandy road

A band of locals help Ellie and co out of a tight spot! © Ellie Simpson

On our way back from Tsimanampetsotsa National Park in the south, our driver took us along a ‘track’ that was pure sand. Despite being in a 4WD, of course, we got completely stuck and for a time it felt like we would never get back to our little beach hut. Luckily, a large group of local villagers stumbled upon us on their way home and stopped to help us out. Whipping out their trusty machetes they chopped down the scrub on the side of the road to lay under our tires, and eventually, we were free! As a thanks for their valiant efforts we gave all 12 of them a lift home in the back of the truck, the sun setting and Malagasy tunes blaring out in celebration.

Good grub? From freshly-caught grilled lobster to the tenderest Zebu steak, Madagascar has some of the best value food in the world. The French influence is strong, but Malagasy twists like sauce coco really make the food special. Don’t forget to wash it all down with a large lychee and vanilla rum. Absolute bliss!

An Indri lemur poses in the forest canopy

You’d be a muppet to miss… The wailing Indri lemurs at Parc National Andasibe Mantadia, just east of the capital Antananarivo. The Indri indri are the largest lemurs in the world, and aside from the fact they are ridiculously cute and strange looking (some describe them as looking like a two year old child in a panda suit), it’s the sound they make that really amazes. Their territorial cries can be heard from over five kilometres away; spend a night in the jungle and you’ll awake to the sound of their eerie wailing floating through the misty forest. Get up close to the Indri and the sound is deafening enough to make you want to cover your ears.

Get any souvenirs? While most travellers to Madagascar seem to avoid travelling by the uncomfortable and often terrifying taxi-brousse (Malagasy minibuses stuffed full of people and packed high with luggage), we spent a fair few hours squeezed between locals, chickens and bags of charcoal. But despite these troublesome transits, our favourite souvenir is a battered tin taxi-brousse model which sits on our shelf at home and reminds us of potholes, smiling children and ring-tailed lemurs.

Denzel Washington Is Back And On A Rampage In ‘The Equalizer 2’

Denzel Washington

Denzel Washington is back and on a killing spree in the first trailer for “The Equalizer 2.”

“They killed my friend. So I’m gonna kill each and every one of them. And the only disappointment is that I only get to do it once,” Washington’s retired CIA black ops operative Robert McCall says in the clip, released Thursday by Sony Pictures.

The film franchise is based on the ’80s television series of the same name starring Edward Woodward.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the sequel to 2014’s “The Equalizer” follows Washington’s “high-level paid government assassin” as he seeks revenge for his friend’s murder. His journey takes him around the world, particularly to Turkey to save a young girl who was kidnapped from her American mother, as detailed in the opening sequence of the trailer.

Pedro Pascal, Bill Pullman, Melissa Leo, and Ashton Sanders (“Moonlight”) also star. Sony Pictures recently moved up the film’s release date from Aug. 3 to July 20.

Just back from: Djibouti

Lac_Assal_Djibouti_Peter

Peter taking in the deceptive vistas of Lac Assal © Peter Watson

Peter Watson, Lonely Planet Trailblazer and blogger at Atlas & Boots, recently returned from a trip to Djibouti.

Tell us more…  I spent 10 days exploring Djibouti, a tiny country on the Horn of Africa bordered by Ethiopia, Eritrea and Somalia. Djibouti hosts an array of peculiar landscapes and is possibly the most obscure country I’ve ever travelled to. Before Lonely Planet named Djibouti a Best in Travel destination for 2018, I would have struggled to point to it on a map!

In a nutshell… Despite its minuscule size (coming in at Africa’s 8th smallest country), Djibouti is a bewildering landscape of belching limestone chimneys, grand desert plains, petrified forests and extraordinary salt lakes – all pressed into an area one-sixth the size of England. Throw in spectacular diving, a wildlife refuge and the chance to swim with whale sharks, and you have one truly thrilling offbeat destination.

A whale shark swimming at the surface of the ocean with smaller fish in the foreground

Gliding next to the world’s largest fish is an animal encounter of epic proportions © Peter Watson

Defining moment? At one point during our whale shark expedition, I thought I’d jumped into the water too early as the whale shark sped off in the opposite direction, presumably spooked. To my surprise, it soon changed course and headed directly towards me. Its enormous bulk slid by so close I thought its tail would hit me – it was an exhilarating experience, right up there with exploring the wildlife of the Galápagos.

Bizarre encounter? Visiting Lac Assal, a salt lake at 155m below sea level – the lowest point in Africa and the third lowest in the world. It’s spellbindingly beautiful but wickedly deceptive. It looks like an idyllic beach with turquoise waters and powdery white sand, but the ‘beach’ is actually brittle deposits of salt and the water is 10-times saltier than the sea. I went for a swim, which largely constituted just bobbing around in the thick water before the stinging salt became too much to handle!

Good grub? You don’t go to Djibouti for the food, but that’s not to say there aren’t tasty options. There’s a notable French influence; fresh croissants and baguettes abound. The Yemen-style oven-baked fish is a must-try and there’s even amazing Indian food. Singh’s restaurant in the capital city (also called Djibouti) serves the finest paneer masala in the Gulf!

A limestone chimney rising from Lac Abbe's unearthly terrain

Quintessential experience? An overnight trip to Lac Abbé offers a great cross-section of Djibouti’s arresting landscapes and cultures. We stopped at the Grand Bara desert and a remote Afar village near the shores of the lake.

Lac Abbé itself is a desolate landscape like few other places on Earth, the seemingly apocalyptic scene punctuated by sprouting limestone chimneys sporadically belching steam. In the late-afternoon, we watched a crimson sunset before retiring for the night to our traditional Afar hut, fashioned from wooden sticks and animal skin. In the morning, we woke for the sunrise and watched the whole process in reverse.

You’d be a muppet to miss… the chance to swim with whale sharks. Wildlife experiences are often so fleeting and I thought this would be the same, but I spent several immersive minutes at a time with these incredible animals on multiple occasions throughout the day. Whale sharks are utterly enchanting in their beauty and behaviour, and it was a privilege to share their space.

Heads Up: The Timex Mechanical Marlin is back in Stock at Timex & Todd Snyder

Timex Marlin Mechanical 34mm – $ 199 via Todd Snyder or Timex

A throwback in more ways than one, the Timex Marlin Mechanical has been the latest Todd Snyder / Timex collaboration that soon after launch was plumb sold out.

But now? It’s back. Both at Todd Snyder and direct through Timex.

It. Is. Small. Just 34mm in diameter with an 18mm wide band. It’s shown below on a pretty average sized 7.75″ wrist. But many guys love the smaller watch trend. Just 30m water resistant, so, don’t get it wet. At all. And it’s one of the few Timex watches out there that doesn’t have bit of quartz buzzing inside it. It’s fully mechanical, so, you’ll have to wind it.

Again, it’s not big. A 44mm chronograph (shown above) dwarfs it. And it’s soup to nuts made in China. But they just got back in stock at Timex, and I believe Todd Snyder just got a new batch in too? Full review here if you want to read up a bit more on it. No word, yet, on any codes working on these things. Shoot me an email if you have a tip on any way to get this thing on discount: joe@dappered.com.

That’s all. Carry on.

Scott Kelly spent a year in space – was he the same as his twin when he got back? FB

Scott Kelly is an American astronaut who worked for NASA from 1996 to 2016 and took part in a year-long experiment aboard the ISS (International Space Station). He undertook the experiment alongside his identical twin brother, Mark, who stayed firmly on the ground while he was sent up into space. The experiment was aiming to detail the differences between the identical twins during the time Scott spent up in space, and the immediate after effects of that time in zero gravity. As there was a genetic copy of Scott on Earth (his twin brother), this was the ideal experiment to show exactly what effects space travel has on the human body.

continue >>

Scott studied hard, earning two degrees, and joined the military, enrolling in the U.S. Navy. He succeeded greatly in both fields, rising to prominence and being chosen by NASA to join their team of pilots and astronauts. Not to be outdone, his brother followed a very similar path, and they both were able to get into space through their military training and engineering knowledge. There was a question that, up until now hadn’t been answered – how exactly does the body change when traveling through space? Are there any more differences that happen on a molecular level that the human eye wouldn’t be able to see? In a show of his support for science, Scott agreed to undertake the study despite the risks that were present. He agreed to stay up in space for 340 days. The goal of the experiment was to provide scientists with enough data to help analyze whether extended space exploration missions are viable in the future.

Scott is now retired from the space program and can hold his head up high having done an awful lot for the future of humanity. Space exploration will allow the human race to develop new energy solutions as well as learn about the effects the solar system has had on our planet. If we can explore the other planets, we might be able to deduce exactly how and when the Earth was created and whether there was ever life on any neighboring planets. As many people have become aware, the planet is running low on raw materials, which is why renewable energy is becoming more and more necessary. Space exploration can both help us find new raw materials while trying to avoid damaging our own planet any further. NASA’s budget for 2017 was $ 19.65 billion, which was a substantial $ 600 million over what they had requested for the year.

This article will explore some of the amazing things Scott Kelly got up to when he was stationed on the ISS for almost a year. But what effects did space travel have on his body? And was he really still the same as his twin once he got back to Earth?

Laura Ingraham Expected Back at Fox News After Controversial Tweet

(NEW YORK) — Fox News Channel host Laura Ingraham is expected back at work on Monday following a backlash by advertisers upset over her tweet mocking a Parkland, Florida, school shooting survivor.

Her one-week vacation served as a cooling-off period. The number of companies saying they would not advertise on her show, at 19, according to a count by Media Matters for America, slowed to a trickle while she was away.

Ingraham also picked up a strong statement of support from her boss and backing from an unexpected source in liberal talk show host Bill Maher late on Friday.

Ingraham has apologized for a tweet in which she said 17-year-old high school student David Hogg whined about being rejected by some colleges. Hogg has said it’s “time to love thy neighbor, not mudsling at children.” Their spat became a symbol of a debate over how minors active in national gun safety talks should be treated by political opponents. Another student, Emma Gonzalez, was falsely depicted in a doctored photo tearing up the Constitution.

Hogg has urged companies to reconsider their relationships with Ingraham, a veteran pundit whose Fox show has aired only for a few months.

Ingraham also was criticized in February for saying Cleveland Cavaliers basketball star LeBron James should “shut up and dribble” instead of talking politics. She has said that was a reference to her 2003 book, “Shut Up & Sing,” in which she criticized performers who venture into politics. James, a three-time NBA champion, has vowed to keep talking.

Vacations under fire can be an ominous sign. Another Fox prime-time host, Bill O’Reilly, went on vacation when advertisers abandoned him following reports about sexual misconduct complaints against him; he never returned. An advertiser boycott helped cost O’Reilly his job at near-lightning speed. Former Fox personality Glenn Beck fell victim to an advertiser abandonment that was much more gradual.

However, attempts to launch boycotts against Sean Hannity have largely failed, and he remains Fox’s top-rated personality.

Earlier this week, Fox News co-president Jack Abernethy said that “we cannot and will not allow voices to be censored by agenda-driven intimidation efforts” and promised Ingraham will be back.

Ingraham has not addressed the controversy on her show, which airs at 10 p.m. ET.

Meanwhile, HBO’s Bill Maher said on his show that even though Ingraham has been “a deliberately terrible person, saying horrible things,” the young gun safety advocates have to expect criticism if they are entering the public arena. He said they shouldn’t target advertisers.

Hogg “complains about bullying,” Maher said. “That’s bullying. I have been the victim of a boycott of sponsors. I lost a job once. It is wrong.”

One of Maher’s guests, former New York Gov. Elliot Spitzer, a Democrat who resigned in 2008 amid revelations he had sex with prostitutes, said the First Amendment gives people the right to organize boycotts. Maher called it an “end run” around the First Amendment.

What’s the secret to Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel‘s happy relationship? According to “Like I Love You” singer, it may be because Beil’s always there to support him.

On Saturday, Timberlake, 37, shared a sweet Instagram showing his wife of five years embracing him from behind.

“She’s got my back,” he wrote in the post’s caption.

Of course, fans of the pair are used to seeing them support each other on social media.

Just last month, Biel gave love to her husband in a video on Twitter, cheering him on from the stands of Toronto’s Air Canada Centre as he kicked off his Man of the Woods world tour.

“There’s nothing better than watching your man do what they’ve been put on this earth to do,” The Sinner star, 36, captioned a video of Timberlake performing his hit “Mirrors” — even sticking out her tongue for the camera after watching him walk by. “I’m so proud of you, man of the woods!”

The duo tied the knot back on Oct. 19, 2012 at the Borgo Egnazia resort in Puglia, Italy.

“It was magical. It was an unforgettable evening,” Timberlake told PEOPLE exclusively at the time.

“It was a fantasy,” Biel also shared.

The couple are now parents to son Silas Randall, who turns 3 on Sunday.

Back in October for their anniversary, Timberlake wrote a sweet love letter to his wife on social media.

“Today is even more special for me because five years ago, on this day, I became the luckiest man in the world when I exchanged vows with my best friend,” Timberlake wrote on Facebook, captioning a throwback video of himself singing Leon Russell’s 1970 classic, “A Song for You,” which he recalled “was our first dance.”

“To my beautiful Jess: You have taught me so much about what a true love means. I can’t put into words what these last five years have meant to me, so… ‘Listen to the melody ‘cause my love is in there hiding,’ ” he concluded, along with the hashtag #Happy5thAnniversaryWifey.

On Instagram, he posted the same video and ended his post with an adorable shot of himself sharing a smooch with Biel.

“My tender heart is yours, now until forever,” Biel replied.

Putting modern portraiture back in the spotlight

To say that Tate Britain’s new blockbuster exhibition All Too Human – Bacon, Freud and a Century of Painting Life is causing a stir, would be an understatement. There’s a major buzz about this new London exhibit, which explores how Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud – as well as Paula Rego, Frank Auerbach and Walter Sickert – captured the intensity of human experience on canvas. Not something that’s all that easy to do.

While the approach and style of the artists featured in this headlining art show differ widely, one thing they all have in common is a fearless approach to representing their subjects. Bold, honest and confronting are three more words we might choose to use. As are textural, tactile and, well, impressive.

A focus of the Art world for quite some time, the build-up to, and launch of, the exhibition has put figurative painting firmly back in the spotlight. Here at artrepublic, we’re no stranger to modern portraiture – and not because we’ve watched Sky’s Portrait Artist of the Year. We’ve long had a stand-out roster of contemporary masters of portraiture, including the likes of Marco Grassi, Ant Carver, Ben Slow and SNIK, each of whom brings something fresh to the table.

Fine art meets graffiti style in the works of Italian artist Marco Grassi, who paints the female form with realistic intensity but aims to draw out identity of his female subjects at the specific moment in which they’re painted. His dedication to figurative painting, and lack of desire to follow trends, results in works that are slightly surreal but deeply evocative. Rather than detract from the figures depicted in his prints, the gold leaf finish that Grassi often favours throw added light on the subject, seeming to bring the portrait itself forward in space.

Similarly colourful, but varying stylistically, you may find the work of Art Carver gracing the walls of East London the work of London… or even in Philadelphia, where he created a large-scale mural of teenage model and Instagram sensation Inka Williams. Taking inspiration from both the New York graffiti scene and more traditional portraiture, Carven has has also cited the likes of Lucien Freud and the YBA’s Jenny Saville as personal favourites.

Although these influences seem contradictory – formal art school realism versus street art’s free-flowing rebellious streak – Carver has merged them successfully to create highly textural portraits, using both spray and oil paint. The prints we have available at artrepublic – such as ‘Serenity’ and ‘Paradise’ – showcase his subjects with a raw, unflinching intensity.

Another fixture of the London street scene, up-and-coming London artist Ben Slow is known for creating distinctive and expressive portraits on canvas – which translate beautifully to silkscreen prints, such as ‘I Didn’t Mean It Like That’ and ‘Of Great Stature.’

Whether he’s bringing fine art to the streets – keeping it local by celebrating characters who have made an impact on their community – or in the studio, layering his main material, ink, with spray paint, stencils and acrylic paint, Slow creates portraits that tell real human stories, and draw empathy for his subjects, both through and beyond the artwork. It’s the eyes that draw you in. Every time.

Last, but by no means least, we at artrepublic are also big fans of celebrated stencil art duo SNIK. No doubt wary of constant references to Banksy every time stencil art is discussed, SNIK are on a mission to prove that stencils can also be used to achieve a high level of realism and detail. Working with different mediums, techniques, paints and varnishes, and painstakingly drawing and cutting multiple layers by hand, the duo create slick, sharp – and almost photo-realistic – images such as ‘Fading Glow.

When you know what goes into each of these artists’ artworks, you can’t help but look at their prints with an whole new layer of respect. We can’t wait to see where they take modern portraiture next, but if you’re a fan of the figurative, you should take it home while you can.

‘All Too Human’ is at Tate Britain until 27 August. Discover Marco Grassi, Ant Carver, Ben Slow and Snik prints to buy online or visit Brighton gallery.

Gucci Mane Finally Paid The IRS $800 Grand In Back Taxes

Gucci Mane El Gato Release Party 3

Source: Prince WIlliams / Prince Williams/ATLPics.net

You can be the most gangsta dude alive, but if you owe Uncle Sam them taxes that’s ya ass (just ask Al Capone). Gucci Mane is well aware of this fact and according to Page Six, the ATL rapper has finally paid the IRS $ 823,358.50 in back taxes.

If you’re thinking “but he just got out of jail, how he owes that much money?” Turns out that Guwop was owing the IRS for income he got in 2008, 2010, and 2011 (no leniency for having paid his taxes in 2009?). Either way we’re glad that Gucci’s put that drama behind him now that he’s a married man and doesn’t need anything tripping up his progress in life.

That being said, we’re kinda surprised Gucci didn’t just pawn a few of his chains or sell a few cars and get out of that debt a lot sooner, but to each his own.
