How Wrestling Has Become Entertainment for Everyone

Earlier this year, I attended my first independent wrestling show after a long love affair with the sport, and a growing interest in Australia’s wrestling scene. Standing in the queue, I made idle conversation with a gentleman who soon turned to me in surprise, proclaiming, “You know a lot about wrestling, don’t you?” While he didn’t go so far as to add ‘for a girl’ to his churlish statement, the implication was as clear as his surprise.

Wrestling has long been seen as a sport ‘by men, for men’, an exclusive club dominated by masculine ideals and misogyny. But wrestling, like any entertainment medium, changes with the times, and recent years have seen it blossom into a unique and brilliant art form with stories and characters for everyone. It’s part of the reason why I love wrestling so much.

'Detroit: Become Human' review: Strong characters make your choices matter

'Detroit: Become Human' review: Strong characters make your choices matter“Detroit: Become Human” is a game that wants all of your choices to matter. From how you reply to other characters, to the split-second decisions you make during a scuffle, to whether you peer into an open doorway, nearly every action you make in “Detroit” feels as though it would impact the game’s narrative and, eventually, its final outcome. It’s not a perfect game — I had problems with the controls at times and quick-time events that felt overwhelming— but this is easily the best title to date from developer Quantic Dream.

How to Become the Solid Snake of ‘Fortnite: Battle Royale’

There’s no shame in hiding in Fortnite. While scores of build-happy, bullet-raining combatants deplete their resources eliminating each other, I stalk in the rather limited shadows, lying in wait. As I head toward the center of the Storm, I try to embody the teachings of the great Snake Pliskin (aka David or Solid Snake). Move quietly, stalk your enemies, and only kill if absolutely necessary.

Granted, I do this because I’m awful at shooting people in games, but it’s all about playing to your strengths.

There are many streams and tutorials on how to get better at Fortnite. A few suggest diving head first into battle to learn the ropes. This isn’t one of those articles. Instead, let’s explore how to effectively pull off a Metal Gear Solid-style, no-kill, no-alerts run.

Drop Late, Glide Far

Take the scenic route to victory.

Depending on the angle the party bus is moving and the location of your drop, you may think you are heading to a pretty secluded spot. Most of the time you will be wrong. To mitigate this a bit, be one of the last to drop out, and pop your glider immediately. Scour the sides of the map for movement. Say a prayer to whatever gaming god you choose and head in the direction of least resistance. Most folks will be rushing to that sweet terra firma to secure a weapon. This is not your goal.

Remember, there will always be a weapon. It may not be the best, but you will eventually find one. They key is to survive long enough to get it. Glide as far as possible, and land close to the edge of the map. If done correctly, the Circle should be established and on its way to closing when you land. Just as Snake infiltrated that disposal facility so many years ago, so shall you press on into a violent world with your wits and pickaxe ready.

Be Late to the Party

Two minutes? Plenty of time.

If you are lucky enough to drop far outside the Circle, you have set yourself up for success. Take your time, and survey the land. Search for chests and better equipment. Remember, do it quietly and quickly, crouching to start. Be mindful of the time though. Once the timer strikes and that circle starts to collapse, you are on the clock.

Make your way slowly towards the Circle, regularly popping your map open to view its constriction process. You can easily get caught up, thinking you have all the time in the world, only to spin around and find yourself engulfed by the Storm. You are aiming to barely make it out of the Storm. The less time you spend in the kill circle, the higher your chance of survival.

Build Less, Stalk More

Oh, I’ll take the stairs.

Building is a great way to protect yourself in Fortnite. The ability to drop a well-placed wall between you and incoming bullets is what makes the game special. Building also works as a smoke signal to distant foes on the lookout for someone to send back to the lobby.

Near the endgame, you can spot all the players in the game building amazing, elaborate structures. Some are built for protection, whereas others circumvent solid fortifications. But did Solid Snake ever stop to build anything in the middle of a mission? Of course not.

So, instead of taking precious time away from your sweet stealth moves. Use the structures previous players have built to your advantage. Just know that random staircases usually lead to an active or dormant battleground, so be careful, sneaky, and silent.

Find Creative Ways to Hide

Psst … over here.

One of the best parts about Fortnite is all the great hiding spots. Buildings, mines, bushes, and ditches all serve to aid in your concealment tactics. Players even create lasting structures for you to curl up beneath. Try to repurpose previously built forts and in-game structures as much as possible, but do not linger.

Tool sheds and previous player battlegrounds make for great tiny command centers. If you get really lucky, your structure will be within the final circle. This way you have no reason to seek out a fight. Whoever is left will have to come to you.

When in Doubt, Stand on a File Cabinet

Hello, cabinet, my old friend. I’ve come to stand on you again.

I was lucky enough to find an environment structure complete with filing cabinet that was within the enclosing circle. Here I took my stand. Literally. I stood on the cabinet, dropped a ramp structure below me for added security, and waited. Just like the lions in the tall grass.

Someone looking to kill me approached and fired a rocket into my happy little bunker. My ramp and precious cabinet took the brunt of the hit. The explosion seemed to satisfy the person, and they turned their back on me. That’s when I struck with a shogun blast to the noggin. Living to hide another day.

Let Others Do the Work for You

Fortnite Stealth Strat
I didn’t do that.

My first victory in Fortnite came after the last three combatants, myself included, squared off in the smallest circle. Technically, the other two squared off; I hid behind a building. Before I knew it, the Victory screen popped up for me. The other two had killed each other.

There is no way to plan for this, but I certainly put myself in a position for it to happen. I hadn’t fired a single shot or made myself known at any point. Clearly, luck was on my side. My actions, however, led to a true no-kill run. Snake would be proud.

Victory Royale With Cheese

Super. Black. Victory Royale
The sweet taste of victory.

I have honed this strategy to a fine, razor’s edge. So far, I have amassed a whopping two Victory Royales. Much to the chagrin of much “better” players. My advice is simple. Let everyone else be “good” at Fortnite. Let the masses build, jump, headshot and disco. You will be the ghost.

You will be the one under the stairs while others loot and pillage. Maybe we will meet there, in the shadows. We will have our silent war. The winner will slink away, never to be seen. That is until someone takes you out somewhere in the top five.

‘Detroit: Become Human’ Is A Bold Step Forward For Narrative-Led Gaming

Positioned in the crosshairs of a ‘violence in videogame’s debate that somehow still looms in 2018, a sexual harassment scandal leveled at its creators and accusations of clumsy and heavy-handed alignment with social causes of the era, it’s been far from a smooth marketing campaign for upcoming PS4 exclusive — Detroit: Become Human.

Developed by Quantic Dream under the watchful gaze of divisive auteur David Cage (creator of Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls), Detroit is the latest addition to the portfolio of a creator who strives to produce ‘games with meaning’. A noble cause, for sure. But does Detroit actually live up to its makers’ admirable ambitions?

So far, Quantic Dream’s output has largely amounted to a souped up take on the mechanics of eighties arcade, and later laserdisc, staple, Dragon’s Lair. Like this 80s classic, Heavy Rain is a game that you’d drag your friends over to gawk at the beauty of, but where the actual gameplay didn’t extend much beyond hitting a button at a crucial moment.

Games like The Last Of Us, Life Is Strange, even the Bioshock series, could never be dismissed as unmeaningful, and they had the immersive gameplay to match their ambitious narratives. After these forward-thinking approaches to storytelling in video games, now the parallels Heavy Rain holds with Dragon’s Lair, seem more robust than ever.

Cagey Controversies

A scene depicting domestic abuse in one trailer for ‘Detroit’ sparked a lot of fury from tabloid journalists, despite films and books tackling similar issues.

Yet, before we dig into whether Detroit: Become Human moves Cage’s vision on, let’s address the horde of elephants in the room. The charges of excessive, inappropriate violence in the game – concerning a quick time event in which a scumbag father physically abuses his young daughter – have been latched onto by tabloid newspapers and even publicly derided by British politicians. Yet, books tackling these themes don’t receive such criticism. Films don’t receive such criticism.

All we can hope is that one day, games become so part of the fabric of our culture that the people who comment on such societal concerns, understand the art form.

Unbelievably, this scene isn’t the only controversial cloud hanging over Detroit. As well as criticisms of the game’s content, there have been claims of real-world sexual harassment over at Quantic Dream too. While deeply troubling, such claims would be more useful being dealt with by the authorities, not here.

Amid all this mess, it would be easy to hate Detroit then. Yet, despite all the difficulties surrounding it, somehow, Cage’s latest is shaping up to be a refreshingly bold and thoughtful step forward for narrative-led games.

And most importantly — one that’s genuinely fun to play.

Art Imitating Life

Earlier trailers suggested a pretty in-sensitive approach to tackling real-world issues, but has the final game improved upon this?

Where some criticism of Detroit: Become Human is justified though, is based on THAT trailer from E3 2017.  Loosely speaking, this is a game about an android awakening – there’s nods to Blade Runner, Westworld and perhaps most notably, Channel 4’s excellent Humans TV series. Said trailer opens with an African spiritual hymn, appearing to align the suffering of slave-race-androids to the struggles of the civil rights movement, and, more offensively, suggests that for-androids (read, black people), they merely need to ‘rise up’, and not doing so is what creates their suffering, not, y’know, racism.

Oh, and it’s set in Detroit, a city with a history that is woven into the black cause.

In 2017, Cage told Eurogamer he’d “never make a racist game”, something that a man who sees the world through the eyes of a race he isn’t depicting, can never truly promise. Cage later backtracked amid the furious backlash to the trailer, saying the game was just that – a game! – not a comment on world events. What was done to the title between there and now we don’t know, although the then promised release period being pushed back suggests something was.

And yet, unlike the fence sitting Far Cry 5, refreshingly the game that we’ve seen here is very much a game about the state of our world, while not solely being the Androids Lives Matter race allegory the trailer suggested.

 Melding Science Fiction With Reality

The parallels between slavery and android persecution aren't exactly subtle here.

“There’s a sci-fi conception at the heart of the story“, says the games’ head writer, Adam Williams, “in that we imagine androids as everyday technology. That allows us to explore all kinds of themes. We ask ourselves, if an android can think and feel, has it become human? If it has become human, what does it mean to be human? We were going back to Isaac Asimov and H.G. Wells, but we wanted to use the sci-fi to ask questions about social division, prejudice, the division in power between those who have it, and those who had not.

As well as doing that, the vessel of sci-fi allowed us to create a kind of underclass, a persecuted class, that didn’t resonate with one group in society, but serves as a general metaphor for those who are treated that way in any culture. For the player coming to the game, they’ll see different resonances…”

This might sound like backtracking. Perhaps there was some reverse engineering. But as we played the game, we were happy to see that big and broad questions are asked about society throughout. The truth is, it is a game about racism, and E3’s highlight real presented that vision in a clunky, offensive way. But what you didn’t see is a game about the rise of AI, about spirituality, about economics, about environmentalism (three hours into the game, you haven’t seen any living animals. What does that mean?), about what it means to be human…

Becoming Human

Unsurprisingly, Quantic Dream's latest asks the player what it really means to be human.

“I’ve had people say to me, ‘the game is clearly about sexism’,” says Adam. “It’s about the eyes you see it through. I’ve had people say, ‘you clearly started writing this after Trump was elected’, but that’s not true [the game was born out of the 2012 PS3 tech demo, Kara, whose story is continued in Detroit]. We’re trying to tell a universal story that will relate to different people in different tiers of any society, wherein players can bring their own perspective to it.

David [Cage] wanted this to be the most interactive story there could be, where peoples choices dictated how the story would play out, so it had to be open to interpretation. It meant the story had to be a kind of mirror to how the player came at it….”

If the game struggles, it does so because of its ambition. It’s trying to say a lot. Sometimes it says it well, sometimes it says it in a way that would be best left in high school philosophy classes. Games may want to deal with such big themes, but to do that needs precise insight; easier done with linear narratives rather than via decision trees.

The Detroit of the game's namesake is a suitably stunning sci-fi metropolis.

But, and it’s important this, Detroit is infinitely more fun to play than any other Quantic Dream title. The Detroit the studio have created weeps with colour and imagination, it makes Japan look a bit like Grimsby on a wet Bank Holiday, while the nuance of the story and the decision-making makes you feel like the choices you make have legitimate consequences in a way the studios preceding games didn’t.

Basically, it doesn’t so much feel like you’re in a story, here, you’re writing one.

How’s Detroit: Become Human Shaping up?

Detroit: Become Human isn’t a game where you just have to press a button at the right time. There’s a degree of sleuthing and compiling information that is crucial to the gameplay experience. It’s a game where exploration is key. Cutscenes play out with you in them, not watching them. It’s a game that forces you to make decisions and actually live with them. We’re going to have to live with it longer before deciding whether it’s truly great, but it’s certainly not a curio.

What it is, is a game set in an evocative world that is both terrifying and wonderous. You’ll most likely find your time in it deeply rewarding.

Marine Corps Promotes Lorna Mahlock To Become Its First Black Woman Brigadier General

On Tuesday, the Marine Corps’ Office of Public Affairs announced the nomination of Colonel Lorna Mahlock by President Donald Trump to serve as brigadier general in the United States military. If she is confirmed, Mahlock will move up to the rank of Lieutenant General, take over the assignment as director of the Marine Corps Staff, and become the first black woman to serve in that role.

Brigadier General Hazel W. Johnson-Brown was the first black woman general officer and the first black chief of the Army Nurse Corps.

The United States Marine Corps, which has long been dominated by white men, launched a marketing campaign in 2012 in an effort to diversify its ranks. They ran television ads during college and professional football games, placed ads in sports magazines, and uploaded a series of online videos, which senior officers told the New York Times would “resonate with young people in general, but women and blacks in particular.”

Mahlock is currently the deputy director of operations, plans, policies and operations directorate at the Marine Corps’ headquarters in Washington, D.C.

She has previously served as the Commanding Officer of Marine Air Control Group 18 (MACG18) in Okinawa, Japan, overseeing 1,300 military and civilian personnel and was responsible for equipment and infrastructure worth $ 250 million. She also leads, maintains, and operates a unit with 400 marines, and $ 60 million in commercial network and satellite equipment in over 15 sovereign countries.

Mahlock also has experience working with lawmakers and private industry professionals. Before her stint with MACG 18, Mahlock worked with lawmakers as the Chief Information Officer of G6, engaging members in support of key Department of Defense legislation in the 2014 National Defense Authorization Bill. She also coordinated with industry leaders like Sheryl Sandberg and Simon Sinek on human capital and talent management strategies.

For a year, she worked at the Office of Legislative Affairs, managing the Marines’ manpower legislative portfolio for the Chief Executive Officer of the Marine Corps. For three years, between 2010 and 2013, Mahlock served in the European Command in Germany, coordinating the activities of several arms of the military and Special Operations activities across 50 countries, including Turkey and Israel.

Mahlock earned a broadcast journalism degree from Marquette University in 1991 and a graduate degree in Adult and Higher Education from the University of Oklahoma. She also earned a master’s degree in Military Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College in 2010, according to her LinkedIn page.

How to become a morning person if your baby doesn’t respect night owls

by

Maggie Downs

posted in Life

I thought I’d always be a night owl. I imagined people were born either night people or morning people, and that’s just the way it was.

When I was in college, I regularly pulled all-nighters, and it wasn’t a big deal. I preferred it. I thrived on working through the silence and darkness, knowing that as the world slept, I was still awake and alive.

After college, I continued to live my life long into the wee hours. When other people yawned, I was just getting started. I had a membership to a 24-hour gym, and sometimes I’d work out at 3 a.m., having not gone to bed yet and not tired enough to sleep.

Then I had a baby.

But he wasn’t just any baby. He was a child who woke up at 5:45 a.m., as consistently as if I had set him like a clock. He was — GASP! — a morning person.

I tried blackout curtains, thinking that the morning desert sunshine was the problem. It wasn’t.

I tried messing with his bedtime. (Although I was reluctant to mess with it too much. He was going to bed easily and sleeping well, so why change anything?) No matter what time he went down, he stubbornly woke up between 5:45 and 6 a.m.

It was clear the thing that had to change was me. I had responsibilities as a mother that I couldn’t meet as a night owl — that is, a sleep-deprived zombie mom. A mombie. I had to start waking up early and not dragging through the day.

A woman sitting on her bed with a cup of coffee, her head against her knees

So I became an early riser, something I didn’t even know could happen.

But it is. I’m here to tell you with confidence that it’s possible to make yourself over into a morning person. I’ve done it. And now I’m one of those disgustingly happy people who shows up early for breakfast. I haven’t even hit a snooze button in more than two years. (Then again, my child is my alarm clock. But still.)

Dark-haired woman in a bed with white sheets. She looks like she's just waking up

In fact, I often find myself waking before my son gets up, so I can still enjoy the silence and darkness of the night — only now I’m on the other end of it. I read, I respond to emails, I do some writing. It’s a quiet space that I’ve carved out for myself, and I have to admit it’s the very best part of my day.

For me, becoming a morning person was a matter of trial and error. I forced myself into bed earlier. I stopped taking naps. I tried various herbs and supplements that I am not qualified to tell you about. I also started drinking insane amounts of caffeine in the mornings. One time I made instant coffee by mixing coffee with instant coffee instead of water, which I do not recommend unless you enjoy heart palpitations.

What I really could have used is this article, “Is it possible to become a morning person?”, created by Mattress Advisor. (While you’re at their site, don’t miss their amazing sleep guide for parents. It’s pretty exhaustive, from how to establish a healthy bedtime routine for your child to sleep problems that arise with age.)

Among the morning-person makeover advice: Establish a bedtime routine for yourself, minimize nighttime commitments, and wake up to natural light. They even include motivation for rising and shining.

It’s something I wish I would have had back when I was snorting espresso. (Don’t do that.)

Are you a night owl or an early riser? Which one is your child?

Study: Even When Born Into Wealth, Many Black Boys Destined to Become Poor

For decades, economists and TV talking heads have studied and debated economic inequality and racial income disparity in America, often attributing the root causes to class, residential segregation, or discrimination to differences in family structure and even genetics.

A new extensive study conducted by The Equality of Opportunity Project, analyzed racial differences in economic opportunity using data on 20 million children and their parents across generations, shedding light on a stark reality that African Americans have always known to be true, that race, and racism have always been determining factors in how opportunity is distributed in America.

Findings in the study show that black boys, even ones raised in wealthy families, living in the most well-to-do neighborhoods have always earned less than their white counterparts in adulthood. To put it simply, black boys have always had much lower rates of upward mobility than white children, which has contributed to generations of black-white income disparity.

Researchers studied five racial and ethnic groups: people of Hispanic ethnicity, non-Hispanic
whites, blacks, Asians, and American Indians. By analyzing rates of upward and downward mobility, they were able to quantify how incomes change and predict their future earnings trajectories.

(The Equality of Opportunity Project,)

Here are five highlights from the 106-page study:

1. In 99 percent of America’s neighborhoods, black boys still grow up to make less than whites.

One of the prominent reasons given for income disparity among blacks and whites is the difference in the neighborhoods they grow up in. The study, however, found that disparities persist even among black and white children who grow up on the same block. Growing up in either Baltimore or Roslyn won’t have any significant impact on the income mobility of black boys as they grow into adulthood, they continue to make less than their white counterparts.

“These results reveal that differences in neighborhood-level resources, such as the quality of schools, cannot explain the inter-generational gaps between black and white boys by themselves,” the authors of the study wrote.

The results, they said, revealed that differences in neighborhood-level resources, such as the quality of schools, cannot explain the inter-generational gaps between black and white boys by themselves. The researchers even compared data from some of the best metro areas for economic mobility for low-income black boys to ones for low-income white boys. They found that black-white disparities exist in virtually all areas and neighborhoods.

2. The Gap Can Be Closed.

One of the findings of the study shows that the black-white income gap isn’t immutable. Black men who move to better areas with low poverty rates, low racial bias, and higher father presence earlier in their childhood have higher incomes and lower rates of incarceration by the time they reach adulthood—demonstrating the effects of growing up in a bad neighborhood.

The challenge is that very few black children currently grow up in environments that foster
upward mobility, the study found.

“Fewer than 5 percent of black children currently grow up in areas with a poverty rate below 10 percent and more than half of black fathers present. In contrast, 63 percent of white children grow up in areas with analogous conditions.”

3. Education level, parental status does not explain the black-white disparity

Although black children are much more likely to grow up in single-parent households with less wealth and lower levels of education, those factors do not explain the gap in black-white disparities, the study found.

When researchers compared outcomes for black and white men who grew up in similar households with both parents and similar levels of income, wealth and education, they found that black men still had substantially lower incomes in adulthood. Their conclusion was that “family characteristics play a limited role in explaining the gap.”

Another hypothesis that is often used to explain racial disparities is that white people are of a higher intelligence than blacks.

“The fact that black women have outcomes comparable to white women conditional on parental income despite having much lower test scores suggests that standardized tests do not provide accurate measures of differences in ability (insofar as it is relevant for earnings) by race, perhaps because of stereotype anxiety or racial biases in tests.”

4. Hispanics Are Doing Better

The upward income mobility across generations of Hispanic Americans are slightly below those of whites but well above that of African Americans. They found that blacks and Native Americans have substantially lower rates of upward mobility than the other racial groups.

In contrast, black and American Indian children have substantially lower rates of upward mobility than the other racial groups.

“For example, black children born to parents in the bottom household income quintile have a 2.5% chance of rising to the top quintile of household income, compared with 10.6% for whites.”

And growing up in a high-income family provides no cushion from these disparities either. The study found that black children with rich parents are almost as likely to fall back into poverty as they are to remain rich. By contrast, white children born to wealthy parents are five times more likely to stay there.

5. Black Women Fare Better

Among those who grow up in families with comparable incomes, the study found that there is almost no gap in wage rates or hours of work between black and white women. Conditional on parental income, black women are slightly out-earning white women. Also dependent on parental income, black women’s college attendance rates are higher than white men’s.

For black men though, the outlook is grim. Among those with comparable incomes, black men grow up to earn significantly less than white men. For black men born to the lowest-income families, 21% of them are incarcerated any given day, which is significantly higher than any other subgroup, the study found.

FASHION DEALS UPDATE:

Will Bucky Become the New Captain America in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’?

WARNING: This post contains spoilers for Black Panther. Proceed with caution.

Bucky Barnes is a fan favorite when it comes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His conversion into the Winter Soldier and then rescue by Captain America has made him a tragic and redemptive character. And he’s continued to be an important focal point for the larger story that the MCU is carrying out.

But, with Avengers: Infinity War promising to shake up the Marvel Cinematic Universe as we know it, fans are beginning to speculate that Steve Rogers might not make it out alive. And if he doesn’t, will another character take up the mantle of Captain America? If so, will Bucky be that successor?

This theory certainly has merit. Heck, it’s already happened once before.

The Death of Captain America

captain america death
In the comics, the death of Steve Rogers led to Bucky taking over as Captain America.

In 2007, Marvel Comics was ending its huge event series Civil War. In the aftermath of that enormous showdown, Steve Rogers turned himself over to the authorities. He is assassinated under the orders of the Red Skull and dies on the steps of a courthouse. It was a huge moment in both the comics and the real world. Professional news outlets broadcast the story of Cap’s death, much like they did back in 1993 when DC Comics killed off Superman.

Following Cap’s death, Bucky Barnes — who had only recently been revealed to be the Winter Soldier — proceeded to take over as Captain America with a brand new suit that was built by Tony Stark. So, if Avengers: Infinity War follows the same path as the comics, this could easily be the way Bucky’s story goes.

Or, is there another contender for the shield?

Falcon

captain america falcon
Falcon has also taken over as Captain America during certain runs in the comics.

Another character who has taken up the identity of Captain America in the comics is none other than Sam Wilson a.k.a. Falcon. He’s been a part of the MCU for nearly as many films as Bucky has. His friendship with Steve Rogers and his dedication to the ideals Steve holds dear have been a vital part of Sam’s story. If he does end up taking over as Captain America, it would be just as justified as Bucky stepping into the role.

Not to mention it would be a symbolic bit of representation for a black man to take over as the symbol of America. And with Black Panther‘s resounding success at the box office, it’s clear that audiences are ready to see that kind of diversity in their superhero movies.

Plus, it’s possible that Bucky might be taking on a very different identity in the future…

White Wolf

bucky black panther white wolf
At the end of ‘Black Panther,’ Bucky is given a very important nickname.

At the end of Black Panther, we see that Bucky has been recuperating in Wakanda under the care of T’Challa’s sister Shuri. He has begun to regain his memory and the effects of his brainwashing seem to have been nullified. During this scene, a group of Wakandan children called him White Wolf. That’s a name with some serious significance.

In the comics, White Wolf is the adoptive son of T’Chaka and the leader of a secret Wakandan police force tasked with carrying out covert and deadly missions. If the Marvel Cinematic Universe decides to do their own version of White Wolf, it could involve Bucky becoming a protector of Wakanda in a role very similar to White Wolf’s in the comics.

It certainly seems that way. Wakanda has taken care of him and if he is getting his memories and personality reprogrammed, it’s possible he will gain an even deeper affection for the African nation. We see him leading the charge with Wakandan soldiers in the trailers for Avengers: Infinity War. And it looks like Shuri is outfitting him with a brand new vibranium arm.

If I were betting money, I’d say that’s where Bucky will end up. But, we could also see him don the red, white, and blue if Cap does bite the dust. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens when Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters around the globe on April 27.

Amygdala neurons increase as children become adults — except in autism

Researchers have found that typically-developing children gain more neurons in a region of the brain that governs social and emotional behavior, the amygdala, as they become adults. This phenomenon does not happen in people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Instead, children with ASD have too many neurons early on and then appear to lose those neurons as they become adults.

The Obamas May Become The First Post-Presidency Streaming Show Producers

Until Theodore Roosevelt, who jumped in and out of the political fray, former presidents often return to their homes, allowing their successor to establish themselves as the new commander-in-chief.

George Washington became the country’s largest whiskey distiller. William Howard Taft became Chief Justice of the United States. George W. Bush pursued his passion as a painter.

Much of President Barack Obama’s moves in the weeks leading to his White House exit was left to speculation. For 55-year-old Obama, living in seclusion was not an option. He had already announced in 2016 that he wasn’t leaving Washington until his daughters completed school. He also said he’d have no choice but to speak up if America’s core values and principles were ever under attack. He didn’t say much else other than taking his wife, Michelle on a vacation trip.

According to the New York Times, the Obamas are close to securing a deal with Netflix to produce a series of high-profile shows.

“President and Mrs. Obama have always believed in the power of storytelling to inspire,” Eric Schultz, a senior adviser to the former president, said Thursday. “Throughout their lives, they have lifted up stories of people whose efforts to make a difference are quietly changing the world for the better. As they consider their future personal plans, they continue to explore new ways to help others tell and share their stories.”

Although the format for the shows and the number of episodes are yet to be decided, the report stated that President Obama’s plan is to highlight inspirational stories instead of using the platform for response to President Donald Trump.

One potential show idea, the Times said, was for President Obama to moderate conversations on topics that dominated his presidency, from healthcare, voting rights, immigration, foreign policy to climate change. The program could also feature topics Michelle Obama championed as first lady. The couple could also lend their brand and endorsements to Netflix programming that align with their beliefs and values.

Still unclear is how much the couple will be paid and whether it will come close to their $ 65 million book. The exclusive content would be made available on the streaming platform to its nearly 118 million global subscribers.

For Netflix, the Obamas’ deal is a part of a broader strategy to develop more original content as the streaming service competes with Apple, Amazon, and traditional broadcast networks. Late last month, Netflix announced it was going to spend as much as $ 8 billion on original shows this year alone. Not only does Netflix spend more money on non-sports content than any streaming provider, it also spends more than many traditional TV media companies.

Apple and Amazon, which both own their own streaming services, have reportedly “expressed interest in talking with Obama about content deals.”

EMPLOYMENT SEARCH UPDATE:

Study Proves White Male Employees Aren’t Thrilled When Women, People of Color Become CEOs

Even with Monday’s news of former AT&T executive Cynthia Marshall’s hiring as CEO of the Dallas Mavericks, the dearth of African Americans in positions of corporate leadership is a grim reality.

Kenneth I. Chenault’s retirement as the chief executive of American Express earlier this month left only a handful of black CEOs at the nation’s largest publicly traded corporations, all of which are men. Meanwhile, the resignation of former Xerox CEO Ursula Burns in 2016 marked the end of black women CEOs in all of corporate America. These dire statistics reaffirm the well-documented challenges black men and women face when climbing the corporate ladder.

Yet, in still, despite these dire stats, white men feel uncomfortable when a woman and/or person of color is appointed as CEO of their company. New research by Jim Westphal, a finance professor at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business, shows that white male executives had an “unfortunate” reaction to the appointment of a racial minority or female CEO. The study, which questioned over 1,000 top executives at large- and mid-sized U.S. public companies, shows white male managers experienced a lower sense of identity with their company when a woman or ethnic minority was named CEO. As a result, they offered less help to other executives at the firm, especially to minority colleagues.

“They actually identify less, psychologically, with the organization after the appointment of a minority CEO and that reduces their propensity to help their colleagues,” Westphal told MarketWatch. “Our theory is that the appointment of minority CEOs triggers biases.”

Furthermore, the study finds that the elevation of one underrepresented person could indirectly put other women and people of color at a disadvantage. “Our study identifies an important mechanism by which such appointments may, counterintuitively, harm the career prospects of other female and racial minority managers by reducing the amount of help that they receive from their white male colleagues,” said Westphal.

The full study will publish in the April issue of the Academy of Management Journal. For now, be sure to check out Black Enterprise‘s listing of the most powerful black CEOs and other business executives.

Surprise: This Could Soon Become the Biggest Clothing Retailer in the World

What’s your go-to destination for shopping for clothes online? Well, if Amazon is in your regular rotation, you’re onto something. Shoppers spent a collective $ 5.5 billion on clothes on the retail site last year. While you might associate the mega retailer with tech, books, toiletries, and everyday necessities, WWD reports that Amazon’s apparel section is growing by leaps and bounds.

WWD tapped a research company called One Click Retail to analyze Amazon’s sales, and it came up with a fascinating prediction. WWD explains, “If [Amazon] continues to grow at its current rate, One Click said it’s ‘likely to become the largest clothing seller in the U.S. by the end of 2018.’ That title is held by Macy’s Inc.” Plus, WWD explains that T-shirts, jeans, and underwear were the most popular categories. We’re only one month into the year, so only time will tell if that forecast will hold true. In the meantime, will you be buying your new spring clothes from Amazon?

Spendwith is Allowing You To Become An Investor

So many new startups seek Venture Capital to finance their companies but, Spendwith, a social impact company focused on increasing commerce within cultures, is taking a different approach.  Not only is the company allowing its users to spend with culturally relevant companies, but it is also allowing you to spend with it by investing in the company itself. That’s what you call a multiprong approach, keeping the dollars in the community.

Black Enterprise caught up with the founder, C. Jibril Sulaiman II to talk about why he started Spendwith, how he compares to the competition and why he decided to use equity crowdfunding to raise his “Friends and Family” round.

(Image: C. Jibril Sulaiman II)

Tell me about your background.

I’m a 16-year entrepreneur that previously ran an Inc 5000 ranked tech company for 6 years.  Before that, I owned several “mom & pop” wireless stores for 10 years.  The technology behind my tech company was based on a problem I personally experienced in accepting prepaid wireless payments as a wireless store owner.

Why did you decide to start Spendwith?

I actually started the first iteration of Spendwith in 2015 after serving with a local African American Chamber of commerce.  I wanted a way to curate the commerce of Black Business, after unsuccessfully launching a local black business directory.  So I began working on a “Black Amazon” or a version of a black e-commerce site.  Because the growth of my tech company was occurring at the same time, I wasn’t able to fully commit the time needed to finish Spendwith.  Over the next few years, my perspective began to evolve on the type of platform needed and who the technology needed to also serve. After the decline of my tech company in 2016 and consequently filing for personal bankruptcy, I sought out for a job in web development. However, the lure of entrepreneurship was still strong, and I decided to bring a previous idea back to life, in a new form.  That’s the version of the Spendwith App we have today, one that encourages spending with the seller and businesses associated with 8 different cultural groups, with more to come.

Spendwiths mission is to increase commerce with cultures and across cultures. In short, I wanted to create a platform that gave people a way to feel good about targeting their spending towards multiple cultures. Until now, no platform like this existed.

How does your company compare to other competitors in the market?

There are some mainstream competitors like Facebook Marketplace, Letgo, Offerup and 5miles.  They offer the ability for any user to list a product or service.  But none offer the ability to associate with a culture or demographic.  This factor is important for those who want to target their support of local businesses.  There’s definitely validity in what we are doing.  Facebook alone has over 40,000 cultural groups.  These groups host posting from 16+ million users.  They post things for sale, offer services, and discuss new business ventures. These groups are described in various ways, some are called “networking” others are called, “marketplaces”, “online flea markets”, “buy/sell/trade” groups and more.  On Instagram and Twitter, users hashtag business related posts under “#blackbusiness”, “#womeninbusiness” and more.  Our goal is to organize and display this culture/demographic related activity in our app in addition to the organic listings that will be posted.

I see that you are currently fundraising, how much have you raised so far and what number are you aiming to hit?

Yes, we are raising under the 1-year-old Title III, Regulation CF rules, that formed as a result of the 2012 JOBS Act. These rules allow a private company to raise money from non-wealthy investors by selling shares.  This is important because black founders of businesses get about 1% of the private equity investments that are made.  This means we have to find alternative ways to raise the capital needed to fund our companies. Regulation CF is the future of fundraising for many of the businesses with Black and Brown founders.  In our offering, we are raising a minimum goal of $ 10,000 and a Maximum goal of $ 500,000.  One of the catches with Regulation CF offerings and the new SEC rules, is I’m not allowed to discuss most of the details of the offering, only to say that you can view it on our StartEngine.com page.  Start Engine is a company that hosts Regulation CF offerings.  They sent our company through a rigorous due diligence process and vetted the company before we were able to launch the offering.

What are some of the challenges that you are experiencing fundraising?

Raising under Regulation CF is similar to the “friends and family” round that most startups begin with.  This important money that is vital to getting the startup off the ground. However, as a black founder, my ability to raise is only as strong as the net worth of my network.  Statics shows that the average net worth of a Black family is less than $ 10,000, versus $ 150,000 for a white family.  This adversely affects startups during the crucial “friends and family” round, it also affects a Regulation CF offering depending on diverse your online network is.

Another challenge is false promises.  I’ve had many people say they would invest, however for unknown reasons they’ve not done so.  I can’t and I don’t let those people subdue my optimism.  For the first time in 80 years, many average working people have the opportunity to buy early shares in a startup.  Some may not understand the gravity the opportunity and that’s why education about   Regulation CF so powerful, is important.  This is not a Kickstarter or GofundMe guys, these are real shares in an early startup!

How are you getting past those challenges?

I get through these challenges with, faith, perseverance, and technology.  I have faith that the story behind our startup and the interest this unique idea will grow.  I also have faith that, through some act of God,  the people who are meant to see our offering will see it, believe in our story, believe in our mission and believe that I and our other founders will create something great.  I’ll say that technology enables my ability to persevere. I’ve leveraged my LinkedIn contacts by sending out email blasts, used Instagram and Twitter for daily postings to old and new followers, and utilized programs like FB Virtual assistant (a software created by another Black founder) to send automated messages to my Facebook friends about the Spendwith offering.  I reach out beyond my network to even wealthy investors using platforms like Angel.co, Gust.com, and F6S.com

Cashing in! Calvin Harris once reportedly made an interesting promise to a fan named Filip Odzak, who he met while touring in Australia. Now, five years later, the fan is reaching out to the Scottish DJ, 33, and urging him to make good on his word.

Odzak posted a screenshot on Twitter on Thursday, December 7, of a text message he sent to the Grammy winner reminding him of their encounter. “Hi Calvin, You may not remember me but my name is Filip with an F and we met during the 2012 stereosonic tour in Australia,” he wrote. “During your appliance at Marquee in Sydney, while hanging backstage in the library bar, we made a deal — sealed with a hand shake — that you would remix Spice Girls ‘2 Become 1’ when marriage equality was finally legalized in Australia. Well it just happened today.”

The Australian fashion commentator couldn’t mask his excitement as he urged Harris to fulfill his apparent promise: “For five years I’ve been waiting for this: I’m very excited to hear what you do with the iconic track to celebrate this momentous occasion. A deal is a deal! Sincerely, Flip.”

Odzak also attached a silly selfie of himself posing alongside the “Feels” DJ, who has yet to respond to the tweet.

Fans have taken to the social networking platform to express their support for Odzak’s objective.

“Is it too late to pitch for the Christmas #1 with a song that doesn’t exist yet?” one fan replied.

One supporter replied with a funny gif.

Added another: “This must happen.”

Australia legalized same-sex marriage on Thursday, December 7. “This belongs to us,” Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnball said of the news. “This is Australia: fair, diverse, loving and filled with respect. For every one of us this is a great day.”

As for Harris? The “Slide” artist rarely covers other artists’ tracks, but perhaps he’d make an exception!

After Aaron Hernandez, CTE Has Become the NFL’s Biggest Problem

On Thursday, Dr. Ann McKee, the Boston University neuropathologist who has diagnosed chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) in dozens of deceased NFL players, gave a slide presentation that left physicians in the audience gasping.

McKee showed that Aaron Hernandez, the former New England Patriots tight end, who was convicted of murder in 2015 and committed suicide in prison in April of this year, had levels of CTE — a degenerative brain disease associated with repeated impacts to the head — never seen in someone younger than 46 years old.

Hernandez was 27 when he died. Images of his brain left no doubt that he had a significant buildup of tau proteins (named after the Greek letter) that destroy brain tissue in the frontal lobe — the area of the brain that moderates behavior, judgment and decision making — and the hippocampus, which controls memory.

The NFL, the unquestioned king of American sports about a decade ago, is facing all sorts of problems this season. Ratings are down 5.5% through the first nine weeks of 2017, according to Nielsen.

President Trump has regularly chided the league for refusing to punish athletes who, in an effort to raise awareness of social injustices, choose not to stand during the national anthem. Some fans are boycotting the league because of the anthem controversy. Papa John’s, the pizza chain, is blaming the NFL’s failure to quell the anthem issue for lagging sales of its pies. Colin Kaepernick has meanwhile filed a collusion grievance against the league; Kaepernick, the ex-San Francisco 49ers quarterback who started the protest movement last year, remains unemployed while teams sign quarterbacks with far inferior performance metrics.

Then there’s the dizzying Ezekiel Elliott case, which has wormed its way through the court system, stealing even more attention from the games on the field. In August, the NFL suspended Elliott for six games due to an alleged domestic violence incident. Elliott has appealed the decision in court and has been able to stay on the field during the litigation; on Thursday, however, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit terminated a temporary stay on the suspension.

Elliott will now sit out at least the next four games: he’ll return to court on Dec. 1. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, aggrieved by Goodell’s punishment of his star running back, has reportedly threatened to sue the NFL over Goodell’s contract. He’s claiming that members of the NFL’s compensation committee misled owners about the number of votes needed to approve an extension for Goodell. (Jones was once one of Goodell’s biggest supporters. But Goodell wasn’t benching a marquee Cowboy in those days.)

As if the off-field activity wasn’t painful enough for the NFL, the on-field product hasn’t been all that compelling. Injuries have wiped out the seasons of a bevy of superstars, like New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt, and Deshaun Watson, the Houston rookie quarterback who was tearing up the league before he tore a knee ligament in practice on Nov. 2. Aaron Rodgers broke his collarbone in October; he could return this season.

To be sure, some of these woes and squabbles largely serve as sideshows. But the Hernandez case can do much more damage to the NFL long-term. Football is now a public health issue; safety remains an existential threat to the game. Hernandez wasn’t some grizzled veteran offensive lineman who pounded heads on every play from scrimmage. He spent only three years in the NFL.

In her presentation, McKee offered one crucial caveat. She said she couldn’t “connect the dots” between Hernandez’s severe diagnosis and his violent behavior. She said Hernandez also had a genetic marker associated with brain diseases. Still, the results raised alarms. “We can’t take the pathology and explain the behavior,” McKee said. “But we can say collectively, in our collective experience, that individuals with CTE, and CTE of this severity, have difficulty with impulse control, decision-making, inhibition of impulses for aggression, emotional volatility, rage behaviors.”

The question on the minds of so many parents across the country — would you let your son play football? — just got much more difficult to answer. Or maybe not. Maybe now it’s a harder no.

ENTERTAINMENT DEAL UPDATE:

How did consoling Gold Star families become political?

HARI SREENIVASAN: We move from Congress to the controversies swirling around the White House.

John Yang has more on the day’s politics.

JOHN YANG: Thanks, Hari.

We turn back to the president’s exchange with that family of a soldier killed in action earlier this month and the president’s role in the bipartisan effort to stabilize the health insurance market.

For that, I’m joined by Karine Jean-Pierre. She’s a senior adviser to MoveOn.org, a contributing editor to “Bustle,” an online women’s magazine, and a veteran of the Obama administration. And Matt Schlapp, he’s the chairman of the American Conservative Union and the former White House political director under President George W. Bush.

Matt, Karine, welcome.

MATT SCHLAPP, American Conservative Union: Great to be here.

JOHN YANG: Karine, let me start with you.

We heard the reporting about the journalistic scrutiny into these telephone calls, contacts the president has with Gold Star families, not just the phone call yesterday, but others.

The White House is pushing back, saying it’s disgusting that journalists are looking into things.

But hasn’t the president brought this on himself in some sense by making the comparison between what he does and what previous presidents do?

KARINE JEAN-PIERRE, MoveOn.org: That’s exactly right.

That’s how he started off the week. He wanted to change, I’m assuming, the press, because, the day before he started turning the story around, we were talking about moron and adult care center.

So here’s the thing. This is a — this is not new. This is a TV episode in a reality world that we have seen before. He kicked off his presidential campaign attacking John McCain and his military service. He also, once, after he got the Republican nomination back in 2016, he attacked another Gold Star family, the Khan family.

So this is a reoccurring kind of position. And then he starts off the week saying, oh, Obama and presidents before him didn’t do the same, didn’t do that, didn’t have a kind of — how to honor soldiers, and so did Bush, which is somebody that you worked for.

So there is a pattern that is quite bizarre and disturbing for a president, a commander in chief, to have.

JOHN YANG: Matt, what’s your take?

MATT SCHLAPP: I think the pattern is actually on his critics, and I think the critics have enjoyed trying to act like there is somehow a disrespect for the commitment of our military and their families.

And I think it’s actually just the opposite. I think if you look at the support that he gets from military families and the military across the country, I think they’re very appreciative of what he’s doing to re-energize them, and the approach he has on these basic issues of our national security.

And I think the people who are making politics about this are the people who oppose him politically. And I just think there are some things that just aren’t political. And I think when we have dead men and women from the battlefield, I just don’t think it’s political.

Maybe one president will handle it one way. Maybe another president will handle it another way. Maybe not all presidents handle every phone call or every interaction perfectly. But they’re trying to do their best to console somebody who’s got a terrible loss.

And I think when we put this in — make it all about politics and what people’s reactions are, what I care about is, I want our commander in chief to console the families of the fallen, and I’m glad he does it.

JOHN YANG: But, Matt, didn’t the president — I mean, the president raised this. He started this discussion on Monday, when he was asked about the public silence, his silence about the four Green Berets killed in Niger.

And he brought up this comparison to President Obama in particular.

MATT SCHLAPP: Look, you can say it’s a question, but you can also say it’s a charge, and the charge was that he is not quickly enough or often enough calling the families of those who have lost a loved one on the battlefield.

And what he was trying to say is that that’s not accurate, and it’s not accurate to say that all presidents do it a certain way, and, quite frankly, it’s not accurate to say that President Obama called all these families, which is what we saw with the example of General Kelly and the loss of his son.

So, look, presidents — I don’t criticize President Obama for the way he handled his contact with these families. I don’t criticize President Trump with the way he’s trying to console people. I don’t criticize President Bush, and I saw him do it. It’s a tough thing to do.

And, sometimes, by the way, those parents give you a piece of their mind, and that’s part of this, too.

And I think there should be a zone of privacy around this, and I think what we’re doing is, we’re sullying the real — the central focus of this, which is the sacrifice of one American to put their body and their lives to protect the rest of us.

JOHN YANG: Matt, let me stay with you and turn to health care.

We heard the president just yesterday talk about how this bipartisan effort by Senators Alexander and Murray to try to figure out sort of an interim step to stabilize the health insurance markets while they work on repeal and replace of the Affordable Care Act, but then today, he comes out and says that he’s against it.

What’s the president doing here? What’s going on?

(LAUGHTER)

MATT SCHLAPP: Well, he’s driving his head of legislative affairs crazy, I’m sure.

But, no, there is method to his madness, which is what he’s trying to say is, is that we can get a deal on these payments to make sure that premiums are affordable for working-class people, but, in order to do that, you have to compromise. And this is where Senator Schumer and Speaker Pelosi, they have to decide, if they want to get these CSR payments done, he’s going to need to get some things done that Republicans want to see done in health care reform as well, some of the aspects of the previous bills that have failed in the Senate.

This is true on DACA. This is true on all these issues. The president is definitely willing to come up with a compromise, but it’s not just on that issue. It’s going to have to be coupled with some other issues. So I think there’s a real chance to get something done on this.

But at the end of the day, there’s no more important thing for Republicans than to actually do what they said they would do, which is to repeal and replace Obamacare.

JOHN YANG: So, Karine, is this up to the Democrats to get this thing through, or is it up to the Republicans?

KARINE JEAN-PIERRE: Look, I think that this bipartisan deal was amazing.

It’s hard to get Republicans and Democrats to agree that today is Wednesday. So, the fact that this happened is actually a big deal. And I think the only reason you would oppose this is if you want the premiums to go up and if you want to sabotage the health care system.

So, this is what the American people sent them to do on the Hill, which is work together and bring something forth.

And the thing about — the other part about this that’s really bizarre to me is nearly every piece of legislation that Republicans have brought forth on health care since Donald Trump has been president has had a CSR component to it. So, what’s the difference here?

This is something that will help poor and sick people get health care. This is a very simple fix. It really will help the health care — individuals…

(CROSSTALK)

MATT SCHLAPP: He’s willing to fix this question around CSRs, but it has to be coupled with the other reforms. And that’s why it was a component…

(CROSSTALK)

KARINE JEAN-PIERRE: But don’t — but then he’s politicizing it, just like he does with Gold Star families.

MATT SCHLAPP: It’s Democrats and Republicans working together.

KARINE JEAN-PIERRE: And that’s the part that I don’t understand. You finally have that. Why are you pushing it away? Why are you opposing it? This is a great thing.

MATT SCHLAPP: The answer is because it’s not just about a fix of CSRs. That’s one tiny little sliver of health care.

KARINE JEAN-PIERRE: But it’s important for right now. It’s important to make sure that poor and sick — poor people and sick people get health care.

MATT SCHLAPP: The people I deal with want to see the whole thing repealed and replaced, not just a sliver.

KARINE JEAN-PIERRE: Well, Republicans couldn’t do that. They had about three, four tries, and they couldn’t make that happen.

MATT SCHLAPP: OK, you got me there.

KARINE JEAN-PIERRE: That’s right.

(CROSSTALK)

MATT SCHLAPP: You got me there.

KARINE JEAN-PIERRE: You guys got the House. You got the Senate. You got presidency. Come on.

MATT SCHLAPP: You sound like a Tea Party person.

(LAUGHTER)

KARINE JEAN-PIERRE: Hey, I’m just telling you the facts.

(LAUGHTER)

JOHN YANG: Matt Schlapp, Karine Jean-Pierre, thanks so much.

MATT SCHLAPP: Thank you.

KARINE JEAN-PIERRE: Thanks, John.

6 Simple Budget Tips to Follow When You Become Self-Employed

self-employed

Taking the leap and becoming self-employed can be both exciting and scary. After you’ve prepared financially to become self-employed, you’ll need to maintain control over your finances and possibly tweak your spending plan to ensure you’ll have enough to meet your expenses each month.

Here are 6 simple budget tips that will help contribute to your success.

1. View It as a Spending Plan

The word ‘budget’ can make people feel tense. Budgeting can seem limiting and no fun which is why you don’t have to commit to a strict monthly budget even when you become self-employed and have a fluctuating income.

If it’s easier for you to loosely plan out your spending, you can still stay on track take care of your necessities without running short.

2. Estimate Your Monthly Earnings

Sometimes counting your chickens before they’ve hatched isn’t always a bad thing. Even though your self-employment income may vary, there’s nothing wrong with estimating your monthly earnings as long as you aren’t spending money before you actually receive it.

Determine how much you need to earn each month and how much work you have lined up. If have contracts established for client work, you can easily estimate how much you will earn each month. That way, you’ll have an idea of how much you can spend and what you may need to do in order to hit your monthly projections.

3. Separate Business and Personal Expenses

It’s imperative that you keep business and personal expenses separate once you start working for yourself. Determine how much you need to spend on your business each month and deposit the money into a business checking account. Then, keep the rest of your income in your personal bank account.

This will help things run smoother during tax time, and allow you to get a clearer view of how much money you have to use each month.

4. Set Aside Enough Money for Taxes

Paying taxes will be your sole responsibility when you become self-employed. With that being said, be sure to talk to your accountant or a CPA to determine what your tax rate is and how much you should set aside each month for taxes.

You should also keep a record of what you pay in quarterly taxes and keep track of all your expenses as well.

5. Make Savings Contributions a Fixed Expense

It’s important to get into the habit of saving a portion of your earnings if you haven’t already. While self-employment provides lots of freedom and opportunity, it also can create many income risks.

If you lose a client or source of income, you want to have enough emergency savings lined up to fall back on. This is why you should choose a fixed amount of money to transfer to your savings account each month.

Include the savings contribution in your monthly spending plan just like you would for your rent or mortgage.

6. Create a Bare Bones Budget as a Backup

The first few months of self-employment may seem like the scariest as you start to notice that your money is being dragged in all these different places whether it’s business expenses, savings, taxes, etc.

This is why you should develop a bare bones budget early on which lists out just the basic expenses you need to meet to survive. During slower months, you may need to start using your bare bones budget in order to make ends meet.

During profitable months, you should be saving extra if you can but your bare bones budget should always be there to use as a last resort. The basic budget you create will help eliminate financial stress as you work through the feast or famine seasons of self-employment.

Summary: Secure Your Financial Situation Step-By-Step

All of these money management tips are very important to consider when you become self-employed and they are simple to implement. Don’t let income and budgeting hold you back from launching a more profitable career and running your dream business.

Realize that you can develop better money management habits to eliminate financial stress by implementing each of these tips step-by-step.

Has Bowser Become A Pimp Now in ‘Super Mario Odyssey’?

So Bowser has decided to a put a little more effort into his look. Why is everyone suddenly calling him a pimp?

In Super Mario Odyssey, Mario is once again at odds with his forever-nemesis Bowser, chasing him across dozens of worlds in an attempt to rescue Princess Peach. Bowser has kidnapped the princess to try to force her to marry him. On his quest, Mario is accompanied by Cappy, a ghost hat/ghost wearing a hat (we can’t really say at this point), who is also trying to rescue his sister Tiara, the crown currently on Princess Peach’s head. It’s all very strange.

It’s not his fault she’s a stone-cold broad.

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines a “pimp” as “a criminal who is associated with, usually exerts control over, and lives off the earnings of one or more prostitutes.” If we’re rolling with this, one can only assume that we’re referencing Princess Peach as Bowser’s property. This actually isn’t as far-fetched an idea, given the history between the two.

A Broken Family

Could Peach actually be Bowser Jr’s real mama?

We never really figure out if Peach is, in fact, the mother of Bowser Jr. We meet Bowser Jr. in Super Mario Sunshine, where he boldly declares his intention to “rescue” Peach from Mario’s clutches. Bowser Jr. eventually comes to believe that Peach is not his mother, and Bowser admits to him as such, although the little one still calls her “Mama” in later games.

But what if this was a lie? Peach never openly denies it. What if, knowing the Mushroom Kingdom monarch would never publicly accept her offspring, Bowser lied to his son to spare his feelings? Bowser Jr. was only four years old at the time. He couldn’t bear to see his son suffer, knowing his mother would never acknowledge him. So, to protect his only child, Bowser hid the truth.

So what if now he’s collecting on this emotional debt? What if Peach’s dark secret is that she did, in fact, have a meaningful relationship with Bowser, only for it to crumble after the birth of their son? Maybe Bowser is earning the “pimp” title, calling the mother of his child home to seal the deal and mend his broken family.

Anything For Love

But “pimp” can also be used as a verb, as in to “make (something) more showy or impressive.” This is certainly the case with Bowser’s new digs, which are a huge cut above him running around naked all the time. You can’t blame Bowser for putting on his finest vestments and making a move — the dinosaur(?) is in love, for god’s sake — especially when Mario hasn’t so much as made a move to claim Peach’s affections.

Our recommendation: Bowser should just drag her to the courthouse and get it done without all the pomp and globe-trotting circumstance. Although, his amiibo will make a great wedding cake topper.

Scott Disick and Sofia Richie Get a Congratulations Dessert and Become Instagram Official

On Saturday, Scott Disick and Sofia Richie not only took their relationship to the Instagram official level, but they also celebrated receiving a “congratulations” cake by kissing on the lips in front of their friends.

During their trip to Miami, the Keeping Up with the Kardashians star, 34, made things Instagram official by posting a sweet picture of himself and Richie, 19, on his Instagram story. In the photo, the two are posing together in front of a blue sky, with Disick’s face hiding behind Richie’s.

Richie posted a similar photo on her Instagram story with the couple posing with their arms around each other.

On Saturday night, the two were spotted receiving a desert at dinner on a plate on which the words “Congratulations Scott & Sophia” were written. (The name was misspelled.)

One of their friends shared a video of the moment on Instagram, capturing Disick and Richie kissing each other on the lips.

Richie later posted a photo of the plate on her Snapchat with lines of what appears to be chocolate crossing out the congratulatory message.

The trip comes one week after a source told PEOPLE that Disick and Richie have been “inseparable.”

“They’re spending every day together,” said the source of the pair, who grabbed coffee in Calabasas last Friday before hitting up Beverly Hills, where they shopped and were later spotted at the Montage Hotel.

“Sofia seems smitten,” added the source. “It’s obvious that she looks up to Scott — she constantly giggles around him. They are very flirty.”

In May, the daughter of musician Lionel Richie was pictured cuddling up to Disick aboard a yacht in the south of France during the Cannes Film Festival. Since then, the pair has spent time together in Las Vegas and Malibu, despite Richie squashing relationship rumors at the end of May when she tweeted: “Just so everyone can get their panties out of their a–es, Scott and I are just homies.”

Disick was previously in an on-again-off-again relationship with Kourtney Kardashian, with whom he has three children — sons Mason, 7, and Reign, 2, and daughter Penelope, 5

Richie has previously dated Justin Bieber.

Spendwith (Image: C. Jibril Sulaiman II)

So many new startups seek venture capital to finance their companies but Spendwith, a social impact company focused on increasing commerce within cultures, is taking a different approach. Not only is the company allowing its users to spend with culturally relevant companies, but it is also allowing you to spend by investing in the company itself. That’s what you call a multipronged approach, keeping the dollars in the community.

Black Enterprise caught up with the founder, C. Jibril Sulaiman II to talk about why he started Spendwith, how he compares to the competition, and why he decided to use equity crowdfunding to raise his “Friends and Family” round.

(Image: C. Jibril Sulaiman II) (Image: C. Jibril Sulaiman II)

Tell me about your background.

I’m a 16-year entrepreneur that previously ran an Inc 5000 ranked tech company for six years.

After the decline of my tech company in 2016 and consequently filing for personal bankruptcy, I sought out a job in web development. However, the lure of entrepreneurship was still strong, and I decided to bring a previous idea back to life, in a new form. That’s the version of the Spendwith app we have today, one that encourages spending with the seller and businesses associated with eight different cultural groups, with more to come.

Spendwith’s mission is to increase commerce with cultures and across cultures. In short, I wanted to create a platform that gave people a way to feel good about targeting their spending toward multiple cultures. Until now, no platform like this existed.

How does your company compare to other competitors in the market?

There are some mainstream competitors like Facebook Marketplace, Letgo, OfferUp, and 5miles. These groups are described in various ways, some are called “networking” others are called, “marketplaces,” “online flea markets,” “buy/sell/trade” groups, and more. On Instagram and Twitter, users hashtag business-related posts under “#blackbusiness,” “#womeninbusiness,” and more. Our goal is to organize and display this culture/demographic-related activity in our app in addition to the organic listings that will be posted.

I see that you are currently fundraising. How much have you raised so far and what number are you aiming to hit?

Yes, we are raising under the 1-year-old Title III, Regulation CF rules, that formed as a result of the 2012 JOBS Act. These rules allow a private company to raise money from non-wealthy investors by selling shares. This is important because black founders of businesses get about 1% of the private equity investments that are made. This means we have to find alternative ways to raise the capital needed to fund our companies. Regulation CF is the future of fundraising for many of the businesses with black and brown founders.  In our offering, we are raising a minimum goal of $ 10,000 and a maximum goal of $ 500,000. One of the catches with Regulation CF offerings and the new SEC rules is I’m not allowed to discuss most of the details of the offering, only to say that you can view it on our StartEngine.com page.

This is important money that is vital to getting the startup off the ground. However, as a black founder, my ability to raise is only as strong as the net worth of my network. Statics shows that the average net worth of a black family is less than $ 10,000, versus $ 150,000 for a white family. This adversely affects startups during the crucial “friends and family” round, it also affects a Regulation CF offering depending on how diverse your online network is.

Another challenge is false promises. I’ve had many people say they would invest, however for unknown reasons they’ve not done so. I can’t and I don’t let those people subdue my optimism. For the first time in 80 years, many average working people have the opportunity to buy early shares in a startup. Some may not understand the gravity of the opportunity and that’s why education about Regulation CF is so powerful, so important.  This is not a Kickstarter or GoFundMe guys, these are real shares in an early startup!

How are you getting past those challenges?

I get through these challenges with, faith, perseverance, and technology. I have faith that the story behind our startup and the interest for this unique idea will grow. I also have faith that, through some act of God,  the people who are meant to see our offering will see it, believe in our story, believe in our mission, and believe that I and our other founders will create something great.

How do people access your platform?

How to Become A Mogul

Louis Carr and Earl "Butch" Graves Jr. How to Become a Mogul (Image: File)

Some people equate being a mogul to being rich, famous and successful. However, Louis Carr, head of media sales at BET, who has generated over $ 7 billion in revenue over his 31-year career for the company, takes a different approach. His definition includes loyalty, discipline, and commitment.

Recently Carr, who also holds the titles of motivational speaker, author, and philanthropist, sat down with President and CEO of Black Enterprise, Earl “Butch” Graves Jr. to talk about becoming a mogul, how to stay committed, and the importance of mentorship at our 1st annual Black Men Xcel Summit.

Louis Carr and Earl "Butch" Graves Jr. (Image: File) Louis Carr and Earl “Butch” Graves Jr. (Image: File)

“You Can’t Quit Because You Owe Me”

During the conversation, Carr recounts the story of his intern who wanted to quit after finding that the position wasn’t the smooth sailing ride that he thought it was going to be. After hitting some hurdles, he came to Carr and told him he wanted to quit. Carr replied, “I can fire you, but you can’t quit because you owe me. I had a deal with your mother and your father and you. You’ve gotta keep that contract until I break it. That was seven years ago. He’s one of my top sales people right now.”

A lot of times we jump into situations because we see shiny objects not realizing the work that is actually involved. We want the reward but, are hesitant to get our hands dirty. Carr defines becoming a mogul as having accountability, putting in the work and then reaping the rewards.

Becoming a Mogul Involves Mentoring

That’s not all. Carr not only feels that the commitment comes from the person himself but, he also feels that becoming a mogul has a lot to do with the commitment from others through mentorship. “We’ve gotta make as much of a commitment to them as they make a commitment to us. It’s a two-way street,” says Carr.

“When I see young people, I really want to help them. I want to expand their vision. I want to give them tools, I want to give them an opportunity because somebody did it for me and I don’t know why.”

Carr is sticking by his word by hosting a two-day conference for men that will cover topics including Money, Health, Relationships, and Entrepreneurship. According to the site, the mission of the conference is to provide men with a powerful forum to enhance leadership skills, find clarity for their mission and goals as well as provide tools to achieve new levels of personal and professional success. Miami Heat become first NBA team with mobile-only ticketing

TwitterFacebook

If you’re heading to a Miami Heat game this season, you’ll need your cellphone.

The team announced earlier this week that it was becoming the first NBA team with mobile-only ticketing—meaning it won’t give out paper tickets.

You’ll have to download the team’s iOS or Android app, or open the ticket in your mobile browser when entering the arena.

In a statement to ESPN, a spokesperson for the Heat said the organization found that about one in three people used mobile tickets to get into last season’s games.

“Adopting mobile only entry is all about improving the fan experience at the AmericanAirlines Arena,” the team’s website says. “Mobile only entry will make getting into the Arena seamless, simple, and fast.” Read more…

Want to Become a Better Manager? Make Sure You’re Doing These Things

Better Manager

As a leader of a small business, you are responsible for everything your company does or fails to do. Whether you are making key decisions, managing resources, or motivating subordinates, being a better manager is tough work.

Fortunately, the advent of the 21st Century, and the amazing technologies that have changed the way we live our daily lives now, are often applicable to business leadership as well. Here are some great ways you can use new and emerging technology to be a more effective manager, and help make your company a profitable one.

Communicate More Effectively

Recent technological innovations make it relatively simple for managers to stay connected to their communities of interest. 25 years ago, if you wanted to communicate effectively with your employees or customers, your opportunities were limited to in-person conversations, landline, print, or maybe radio or television advertisements. These days, there are numerous ways for you, as a manager, to stay connected to everyone.

Managers can use emails, texts, or tools like Skype, FaceTime or videoconferences to communicate with your employees, regardless of where they are. Your website and social media presence can keep you connected to customers and the public as well. An effective social media presence especially let’s you receive critical feedback with the customers; it even allows customers to communicate effectively with each other.

Make Better Decisions

Technology can help remove some of the uncertainty managers often face, and enable them to make more informed decisions. Your company can leverage some of the “big data” analytics of companies like Google to gain a better understanding of your customers, sales trends, and other critical activities, which will make it easier to make critical decisions about resources management and business strategies; big data will literally help you see the future.

Additionally, accounting software can help managers review past financial performance information to make more effective decisions today.

Finally, collecting data on your own companies’ performance – from its employees, to its machinery and processes – will enable a manager to review the company’s overall performance, and make decisions to improve upon it.

Manage Your Workforce

There are a plethora of software tools that can ease managers’ burdens when it comes to human resource management. There are many programs that make it scheduling work times and hours for subordinates a snap; the same software make computing hours and payroll much easier as well.

Finally, there are several human resource programs that make it easier for you to rate your employees’ performance and potential, and even allow their peers to provide performance evaluation feedback as well.  Tools like this can help managers improve their employees’ performance, and help them realize their potential.

Managers can also use these tools to help guide their tough decisions about promotions and pay raises, and can even save mangers a considerable amount of time that would otherwise have been spent documenting employee behavior on analog forms as well.

Collaborate With Your Team

Thanks to modern technology, some of the best collaborative efforts may come from team members in completely different time zones. There are a myriad of tools available that make it easier than ever for virtual teams to work together, share information, and develop effective plans and ideas, regardless of where they are.

Cloud computing, for example, makes t easier than ever for employees and managers to store and access key data regardless of where they are. Software like Dropbox allows you to share key files with your team, work in real time with teammates who are geographically separated, and provide guidance and intent to teammates so they get the job done correctly.

Automate Your Workflow

Modern technology can enable you to automate many of the more mundane tasks your business has to perform. This helps save you and your employees time.

In some cases, automating workflows may enable you to reduce the total number of workers you need, saving you time and money. For example, your company may be able to automate purchase orders for raw materials or supplies based on warehouse monitoring programs, saving you time previously spent doing this task. Another workflow automation tool, customer relationship management (CRM) software, can also simplify many of the basic tasks for dealing with clients that previously required much more of your time and attention.

The less time managers have to spend on routine tasks, the more time they have available to focus. Now they can focus on what is important right now in their company.

Stay on Schedule

One of the biggest challenges entrepreneurs and small business owners have is managing their timeeffectively. Fortunately, today’s technology can provide welcome relief on this front.  Simple calendars, like those found in Microsoft Outlook, make it simple to schedule key events and keep track of them; managers can also share their calendars, and help subordinates organize their own schedules more effectively as well.

Cloud connectivity and mobile computing also helps synchronize your calendar across all of your devices, so that you always know what the next scheduled event is, too. New programs also make it much easier for companies to more effectively – and efficiently – track billable time when performing a service for their clients, taking yet another burden off of managers.

Monitor the Situation

Technology has also enhanced managers’ capacity to maintain situational awareness of their companies’ status, regardless of where they are.

Software makes it easier than ever to track total sales, spot trends, and view up-to-date financial information. Automated systems also make it simple for managers to receive rapid feedback from clients on their products as well.

Global positioning technology makes real-time management of your company’s vehicles, employees, or shipments easier than ever, too.

Finally, Internet accessible cameras, sensors, and controls can even allow managers to observe their business. Wherever they are at to stay aware of environmental conditions on-site. It can also help them make adjustments to things like thermostats from remote locations.

Never Stop Learning

As a manager, business owner or entrepreneur, it can be difficult to find time to improve yourself. If you’re a sole proprietor, it’s hard to take time off to attend a business class.

Fortunately, it is easier than ever to leverage technology to educate yourself and gain new skills. Internet-enabled devices make it simple to connect to thousands of online classes. Now you can bring the class to wherever you’re at. You can often take online courses to get critical certifications you need to operate your business as well.

Finally, access to information, both free and through subscription services like Lexus-Nexus, can allow you to increase your knowledge on whatever subject you think is important as well.

Parting Thoughts

Leadership is arguably the most critical component of any business, big or small.  Technology offers today’s managers a myriad of tools that, if used correctly, can help them be more effective.

Technology can help managers communicate and collaborate with their teams. I’ve also found it increases their situational awareness, oversee their employees, and manage time more effectively. It can even help them learn new skills. Managers who leverage technology effectively can gain competitive advantages over rivals, and increase their companies’ success and profitability.

So take the time to research and understand existing and emergent technologies, and put them to work for you today.

EMPLOYMENT UPDATE:

Have We Become An Angry Dating Culture?

I’m seeing a really disturbing trend out there.

I want you to take this time right now to read every single word that I’m writing.

I don’t want you to glance through this article, because if you’re single, this is by far the most important thing you've ever read in your life.

I’m going to start off with this:

How frustrated are you now in your dating life?

If you can write that down right now, write the one word that describes how you feel in your dating life right now.

Over the last couple of years, I’ve noticed a really disturbing trend when it comes down to dating.

The word that we used to have a long time ago, before the flood of Internet dating sites and dating apps and social media validation.

And all these ridiculous ways to get lost in cyber world.

The word that people used to use in dating was a magical word, it was called hope.

People got excited about finding a new mate.

People got excited about finding a new partner.

People went out and actually talked to one another.

If you’re a woman reading this article right now, I want you to think, when was the last time a man came over and approached you and flirted with you?

If you’re a man reading this, I want you to think, when was the last time you actually walked over and actually took a dare and flirted with a woman?

I want you to also ask yourself this question: when you're out in public, how often do you look at your cell phone?

Everybody is angry right now because everybody is escaping.

We’ve become a dating culture – especially in the western world – of people who are swiping and hoping that they’ll stumble across the right photo, the right picture, the perfect person.

Dating has become a paradoxic choice. It’s almost like shopping on Amazon.com for stereo equipment.

You take a look, you read the reviews and you see if – after reading reviews from random strangers – this is the perfect thing for you. And don’t even get me started on how dating is only a review away. Pretty soon there’s going to be a review site, a major one, a major breakthrough where people will post about their exes, and then you’re going to find out the truth about everybody and the next thing you know, it’s going to feed this dating anger even more.

Let’s even get more honest with today. When was the last time you went out on a date with somebody and didn’t Google them ahead of time so you can have a preconceived story about what you think they are due to somebody else’s opinion of them on Google?

Or maybe an article they wrote because well, in today’s neurotic world, we can go deeper and deeper into the void.

It used to be this magical moment: boy meets girl.

Boy asks girl out, actually calls her on a thing called the telephone, not a texting device. Your iPhone is a phone, people, not an iText.

There would be this anticipation. There would be nerves.

At the end of the date, you’d wonder if you liked each other, you’d do a post-date re-cap with your friends and you’d give that person another chance.

Now, there’s no post-date re-cap anymore. It’s either a yes or a no immediately. You don’t think about it because when you do. You go back into the illusional, delusional world of swipe dating.

Because we always know there’s going to be something better, because that’s the way we’ve been programmed.

And this is why people are so frustrated. People are frustrated and angry. Women are angrier than ever before.

I know this factually. I’ve been coaching women for a long time and as the years go by, women get more and more angry.

They feel like they are running out of time.

I'm in my 30's, when am I going to have my children, when am I going to meet that guy?

I'm in my 40's, I haven't met him yet. When am I going to find the man that I'm supposed to marry and live happily ever after.

I'm in my 50's and I'm running out of time. I'm not going to be pretty for a long time and all men want is younger women.

It just goes on and on and on. Women have this accelerator down they feel like they have no time left in the world, that they are just aging at 100 miles per hour and they get angry and pissed off that nobody is seeing their beauty, so they are forced to date the men they don’t want to date.

People are angry out there.

If you ask people how they feel about dating, most people will say they hate it.

To me, I’d ask why do you hate dating? It’s an opportunity to meet someone you’ve never met before. It’s so amazing because it gives you an opportunity to have the relationship you’ve never had.

If you’re not open, how do you expect to even meet somebody? And yet, we do all of these ridiculous things, pretending we’re open.

Swiping. Social media posting. We have this illusion of a social life. No wonder people hate dating, because we’re not getting anywhere!

We’re like bald snow tires in a snow storm. We just spin and spin and spin and get nowhere, and then when we finally do find somebody…

We try to hit the accelerator button down and try to get to a relationship as quickly as possible so we can avoid the thing that we truly hate: dating.

Folks, you’ve got to lose the anger to find love. Period. End of story. End of rant.

Much of my clinical work over the years has been with individuals and couples who experience a diminished sense of self-worth; low self-esteem. When they find that their relationships have entered the dead zone, they often feel stuck within them — troubled and frustrated. They’re unable to push for revitalizing them, if that’s possible, or leaving, if that would be healthier. And even as they uncover the roots of their low self-worth through therapy, they often remain frozen in a bad, even destructive relationship.

Some recent research provides some empirical confirmation and information about that clinical picture. It found that the partner with diminished self-esteem tends to avoid confronting problems or conflicts to begin with. That avoidance often reflects feelings of insecurity about the partner’s feelings for them. That, in turn, leads to hunkering down and withdrawing from the conflict, which might be resolved through more open, transparent communication.

The research, conducted by the University of Waterloo, confirmed in essence that partners with low self-esteem tend not to voice relationship complaints with their partner because they fear rejection. “There is a perception that people with low self-esteem tend to be more negative and complain a lot more,” says Megan McCarthy, the study’s lead author. “While that may be the case in some social situations, our study suggests that in romantic relationships, the partner with low self-esteem resists addressing problems.”

And, “If your significant other is not engaging in open and honest conversation about the relationship,” says McCarthy, “it may not be that they don’t care, but rather that they feel insecure and are afraid of being hurt. We’ve found that people with a more negative self-concept often have doubts and anxieties about the extent to which other people care about them,” she says. “This can drive low self-esteem people toward defensive, self-protective behavior, such as avoiding confrontation.”

A summary of the research also points out that people with low self-esteem’s resistance to address concerns may stem from a fear of negative outcomes. That is, they may believe that if they speak up and confront what troubles them, they risk rejection from their partner; and that, in turn, will damage their relationship. Consequently, that tends to lead to greater mutual dissatisfaction in the relationship.

“We may think that staying quiet, in a ‘forgive and forget’ kind of way, is constructive, and certainly it can be when we feel minor annoyances,” says McCarthy. “But when we have a serious issue in a relationship, failing to address those issues directly can actually be destructive.”

It’s good to see empirical support for familiar patterns that men and women often bring to psychotherapy. This can help them clarify how and why they perpetuate the negative relationships that they hope to heal; and what they need to deal with to bring about some positive movement.

How Meditation and Breath of Fire Will Help You Become a Master of Your Art

For the last few years I have been doing vipassana meditation and a breathing technique called breath of fire every morning and evening. These exercises have calmed me down and have increased my creativity in ways that I never before could have imagined.

Vipassana Meditation was created by the Buddha over 2,500 years ago and is still taught for free at centers and retreats throughout the world. Breath of Fire is a three minute breathing exercise that is a part of Kundalini Yoga.

Being Creative is like fishing in an Ocean. You are lucky if you can catch a fish. I consider catching a fish like catching a great idea. You can catch ideas, but how many of them are actually good and how many of them can you put together to make a project that is substantial? It could take months before you have one great song or one great script or one great flow of ideas that make you proud.

If you do breath of fire for three minutes daily within six months you will not be fishing in an ocean, you will be fishing in a fish tank. All your ideas will be right there in front of you. You will be able to grasp them more quickly and more easily. You will not spend weeks or months trying to find the fishes. You will find the great ideas in days or even hours. Imagine that? Imagine being able to hold onto and mold great ideas within days?

If you add twenty minutes of vipassana meditation daily on top of the three minutes of breath of fire in six months you will be fishing in a fish tank that is lighted. Now you are playing the game of creativity with ease and joy. Imagine being able to see all your ideas with such ease and also being able to connect the ideas?

Making a decision is a difficult trait for most creative types. We have so many ideas that we want to pursue that focus is often difficult. With breath of fire and meditation you will know which ideas to focus on and which ideas to discard. You will be able to clearly see how ideas match with each other and you will be able to clearly see how past ideas might now work with current ideas. You will become a Master of your Art.

I am now at such peace and ease with my life. My creative process is so fulfilling and enjoyable. I am OK with myself and that in itself is very important. Creative types have been known to be very hard on themselves. From Jim Belushi to Kurt Cobain to Robin Williams; we have seen our fair share of creative types being out of control. With meditation and breathing, I believe the suicide rates amongst creatives will disappear and the amount of ease and joy will increase.

One must enjoy their creative process. One must love their creative process. And one must be fulfilled in their creative process. Breath of Fire and Vipassana Meditation helps us achieve these goals.

5 Easy Ways to Become More Empowered

Caitlyn took the Internet by storm earlier this week, setting herself apart from men, women and other celebrities with facades, simply by copping up to who she really is and always has been. Oh- and that’s Caitlyn with a “C”, not a “K”. Sorry not sorry, Kris? I think we have an empowered woman on our hands and I couldn’t be more delighted!

The Vanity Fair teaser released on Monday gets me all sorts of excited and emotional. Caitlyn Jenner — the former Bruce Jenner — describes her transformation as finally becoming free. Feeling free and embracing your true self is all I can hope for- for anyone. It is a freedom worth fighting for. When you give yourself the space to love who you authentically are, you are able to live your life wholeheartedly.

Jenner compares her Vanity Fair cover shoot with winning the gold medal in the 1976 Olympics: “That was a good day, but the last couple of days are better… This shoot was about my life and who I am as a person.” Who would think that celebrating your own realness could feel better than becoming a world-class champ?

Well I’m all for it! And anyone can allow themselves that sort of satisfaction and independence because we all have the power to become the best versions of ourselves. So here are a few easy steps to take toward your own journey of accepting and loving who you really are as an individual and finding your personal sense of freedom:

1. F**k what people think of you
Understand that when people judge or criticize you, they are saying more about themselves then they are about you. I advise you to listen to what others say, but consider deeply — is this about you or them? Sometimes criticism can be helpful and beneficial for you. Other times, it may be directed toward you but not about you, so leave the purposeless stuff behind.

2. Don’t let society define you
This has to do with what’s expected of you. Courageous individuals and groups are breaking down the old-school compartments and labels, and have been for decades. Women were expected to be homemakers, men have to be the major ‘breadwinners’, same sex marriages aren’t acceptable, and more. Those ancient-minded ‘faux pas’ are becoming the new normal if they’re not already. You must do what brings YOU fulfillment.

3. Observe your intuition and inner thoughts
The only way to find yourself is to pay attention to what goes on in your own mind. As mentioned before, we are shaped by what we’ve learned throughout life. Make the differentiation between what you truly desire and what you’ve been conditioned to accept.

4. What makes you happy?
Write it down, make a list, keep a journal… but answer the question! And the second part to the question is: What are you passionate about? The answer to these two questions will be what drives you. Bring these interests, ideas and beliefs into your world.

5. The “golden rule”
Treat others as you want to be treated. Taking others’ into consideration will shed light on who you are as well. As mentioned in item 1: judgments and criticisms are usually about the person doing the judging or criticizing. We can also self-reflect in our generous acts as well, such as choosing one act of kindness over another because you can relate to it. Before you direct any sort of energy – positive or negative -toward someone else, find out where the motivation comes from within yourself. As you gain more awareness of yourself and how you act toward others, you will find the root of where your intentions come from; therefore, getting to know your true self.

Chris Christie Launches Bid to Become New President of FIFA, Citing Ability to Build Bridges

In a dramatic week for world football, Sepp Blatter, the President of FIFA, gave himself a red card and announced his resignation, and Chris Christie declared his goal of replacing him.

At a hastily arranged news conference in a Dunkin Donuts, Governor Christie said:

“I have always believed that I would make a great President, so for the benefit of the people of New Jersey, America and the world, I will be formally announcing my candidacy for the Presidency of FIFA as soon as I’m done eating. “

As reporters collectively choked on their frosted maple crèmes, Christie continued:

“I have to tell you guys that I would be the perfect person to replace Blatter.

I appreciate that a deep knowledge of football is essential for this job, and I have it! I’ve been watching the Cowboys, the Giants and the Eagles my entire life and I will bring all that know-how to the table for the benefit of American football fans throughout the world.

I also hear that running FIFA is like running the mafia. That’s awesome because I’m the Governor of New Jersey for Christ sakes, so enough said about my qualifications in that regard.

Additionally, I know that the new head of FIFA must have a lot of experience dealing with the US Department of Justice in ongoing criminal investigations. Well, guess what? I’ve been doing that for well over a year now!

Most importantly, I believe FIFA really needs someone to build all the bridges that have been burnt during this entire fiasco. And as I’m sure you will agree, whenever anyone thinks of bridges nowadays, they immediately think of me!”

After his announcement, Christie did not immediately respond to questions from reporters, citing an urgent need to finish his doughnut.

In further developments, other republican FIFA presidential hopefuls also declared their candidacies, notably Rick Perry, Scott Walker and Sarah Palin — the latter of whom called the decision to give the 2022 World Cup to Qatar, “the worst supreme court ruling since Roe v. Wade.”

No matter who else throws their hat into the ring, Christie is likely be the most appealing candidate to FIFA sponsors such as McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy’s, Pizza Hut and Kentucky Fried Chicken — particularly given his extraordinary rates of consumption.

However, when contacted for comment, Irma Crook, one of the few remaining executives at FIFA, said: “Chris Christie wants to become the new President of FIFA? Oh my God, quick! Let’s get Sepp Blatter back!”

4 Things You Need to Know to Become ‘Fearless’ in Your Life

There’s a huge myth around fear that I want to dispel today and it’s that certain people are more fearless than others. I’m sure there are exceptions to this, but for the majority of seemingly fearless people, the correct term would be more like fear-filled.

I’ve done a lot of big things in my life and business lately, as well as in my relationship, finances and everything in between, but I’m not fearless.

The truth is, I’m riddled with fear more often than not.
Creating a life and business around your passion, going deeper into intimacy and connection in relationships, putting yourself out there, trying new things, expressing yourself in whatever way you do… it’s all scary as hell. It’s uncomfortable, challenging, terrifying and hard. But when you commit to creating an amazing life, fear’s just part of the process. People who appear fearless are the ones who understand this.

It’s not at all about an absence of fear… it’s about knowing that fear will always be there, even more so the deeper you descend on the journey, and letting it guide you rather than deter you from moving forward. I live a fear-filled life because that’s what it takes to create amazing things and attract amazing people, experiences and opportunities.

Four things you need to know to become “fearless” in your life:

1) Fear will never go away unless you settle into a rut.
Really sit with that for a moment… if you’re not experiencing fear in your life right now, chances are you’re sticking to what you know, settling for less than you deserve, and you likely aren’t doing much growing either. If you’re doing the work, building amazing things, and diving deeper into your truth, you’re experiencing fear and discomfort. It comes with the territory and there’s no way around it. So if you’re not, take an honest look at your life and see if you’ve settled or fallen into a comfortable rut to avoid the discomfort.

2) It gets easier with time.
At this point in my journey, I’m pretty comfortable with fear. I’m launching a newish website and offerings, putting out my first book, diving deep and dark in my personal development and relationships, letting go of things, shifting my life and business, and generally doing more and more of the work it takes to create an amazing life. It’s scary, hard and uncomfortable. I’m terrified every time I send out a vulnerable blog post, release a new module for my program (despite doing this work for almost a decade), and step further into my truth.

3) Fear can be the best fuel if you let it.
I’ve talked and written about this many times as one of my favorite quotes from Robert Heller, “fear is excitement without the breath.” Fear is an awesome kind of energy that can be easily shifted into energy, excitement, enthusiasm, and fuel if you stop fighting it. Rather than running away or retreating, or avoiding it all together, feel the fear and breathe into it deeply. Let it turn into the nervous, excited, and jittery energy it can be and then move forward. I do this often and it always helps me tackle the scary things in my life and businesses with more ease than tension.

4) Bravery comes from vulnerability, not fearlessness.
Something Brené Brown says that I love is, “Vulnerability is our most accurate measure of courage.” If you want to be brave, “fearless” and courageous, you have to be vulnerable, there’s no way around it. Creating amazing things in your life and business requires depth, connection, expression, and truth. It requires you to put yourself out there in more ways than one and that’s not easy, but it’s so worth it. The more vulnerable I get, the deeper my personal relationships and connection to my clients and audience have become. I can’t count the number of blog posts or social media updates I’ve hesitated to hit send on, and then had to walk away from the computer so I couldn’t quickly “undo” them. Those are the times I’ve most deeply connected with you. And it wasn’t until I started getting more vulnerable that my business really began to blossom.

Take action now!
Where do you want to be “fearless” in your life, work, or relationships? Where are you stuck in a comfortable rut? Choose one thing you’ll do right now to be fear-filled and vulnerable and go do it. Breathe into the fear that comes up and trust in the journey. Fear is a guide as much as it is fuel, so whatever you need next, you’ll likely feel the most fear around. Let me know what you chose and how you executed and we’ll celebrate together!
