Being a Bridesmaid Can Get Expensive — Here’s How to Bow Out Gracefully

When one of your friends is getting married, it can feel like an honor to be asked to be a bridesmaid.

But with great honor comes great responsibility. (That’s how that saying goes, right?)

In the case of being a bridesmaid, though, that usually means financial responsibility.

And while you may think money is no object when it comes to the nuptials of your nearest and dearest friend, your bridesmaid budget might not stretch quite as far when the bride-to-be is neither a close friend, nor a particularly dear one.

So here’s something you may need to hear before we head into the thick of wedding season: It’s OK to say no to being a bridesmaid.

“But how?” you ask. “Won’t my friend/cousin/roommate/coworker/running buddy/dog groomer hate me if I don’t spend thousands of dollars to support her on her big day?!”

Well, maybe — but a true friend really shouldn’t. At least not as long as you plead your case correctly.

The Cost of Being a Bridesmaid

The typical bridesmaid’s bill will vary, but it’s not unheard of (and in fact, it’s common,) for a bridesmaid to pay upward of $ 1,000 to stand beside a bride on her big day.

According to figures published by WeddingWire in 2017, the cost of being a bridesmaid averages a whopping $ 1,200 but can quickly rise to as much as $ 1,800 before all (vows) are said and done.

Wondering how in the world the experience of standing by your dear, sweet friend can cost you more than a month’s rent?

Here’s a breakdown of the average costs for bridesmaids.

Dress: $ 208 (Need it altered? Add another $ 70.)

Shoes and accessories: $ 120

Hair and makeup: $ 132

Travel and accommodations: $ 320

Bachelorette party, bridal shower, etc.: $ 400 to $ 800

Total: $ 1,180 to $ 1,650

And that’s before incidentals like airport food or post-wedding brunch.

Yeah, being a bridesmaid is expensive, so it’s not a financial commitment you want to enter into lightly.

What to Consider Before You Say Yes to the Bridesmaid’s Dress

There’s no black-and-white answer to the question of whether you should agree to be in the bridal party no matter what your relationship with the bride is. It’s a personal choice, and it shouldn’t be made without some real consideration.

Jen Glantz, founder of Bridesmaid for Hire and author of Always a Bridesmaid (For Hire), says some life situations simply have to take precedence.

“Before you say yes, have a conversation with yourself and ask, ‘What’s going on in my life that would make it hard for me to be an extra good friend during this time?’” Glantz advises. “If you have complications in your personal life, financial life or work life, then you might want to say no.”

If you’re on the fence about whether to stand with the bride on her big day, here are some things to consider that may help you make your decision.

What’s Your Relationship to the Bride?

If the person asking you to join her up front on her wedding day is a close friend or relative, it makes sense that you’d want to honor her any way you can.

But if the bride in question is an old college friend who didn’t bother to keep up her end of the friendship, or a new acquaintance who just needs bodies up there next to her, you’re under no obligation to pay hundreds — or thousands — of dollars for her to say “I do” in a ceremony you’re not really invested in.

Also, remember that you someday may be (or already were) in the bride’s position.

If that were the case, would you (did you) ask this bride to do the same for you? Would you ask this person to spend several hundred dollars to stand beside you on your wedding day? If not, then you probably shouldn’t feel like you have to do the same for her.

Why Is She Asking You?

Consider why the bride is asking you to be a part of her wedding party.

Is it because you’re actually good friends and she couldn’t imagine her day without you? Or is it because she heard you were super helpful or generous (with your time or money) throughout the last wedding you were in? Or because she needs just one more person to round out her wedding party?

You might be a backup pick (or a backup to the backup pick) — and if that’s the case, it would be a real bummer to spend over $ 1,000 to support someone who doesn’t really care about you.

Will Your Friendship Survive?

Listen, I’m not saying you should base your entire (financially consequential) decision on whether your relationship will survive the fallout, but it’s important to consider all the angles here.

Would your relationship survive unscathed if you were to say no to being a bridesmaid? Would you be heartbroken if your relationship didn’t survive? Is the friendship valuable enough to hold on to if an honest conversation about your finances and your need to sit this one out could do irreparable damage?

Glantz has seen plenty of bride-bridesmaid relationships turn sour because of wedding-related demands. “Being a bridesmaid is a true test of any friendship,” she says. “If you can make it down the aisle without feeling resentment toward the bride, your friendship is strong and resilient.”

A true friend (one you’d want to keep around, anyway) would understand your financial predicament and wouldn’t hold it against you in the future.

Do You Have Other Life Situations That Will Keep You From Being Fully Invested?

There are some circumstances that just have to take the top spot sometimes.

Are you going to be nine months pregnant on the date of the wedding? Are you in the process of buying a home, allocating every last cent to the down payment and closing costs? Do you already know you’ll need to buy a car sometime this year? Does work require you to travel often, or with little notice?

A lot of scenarios may prevent you from making a time or financial commitment.

“Being a bridesmaid can get expensive and be a major time sucker,” Glantz says. “Oftentimes, brides forget that their bridesmaids have their own lives going on, which means they can’t always do everything and anything that’s asked of them.”

If you have situations that will keep you from being a good friend and bridesmaid as the wedding date approaches, you should make that information very clear before the bride gets into the thick of stressful wedding preparations.

How Much Will It Cost You, All in?

Before you decide on a firm “no,” check with the bride or the maid of honor to see what kinds of activities you’ll be expected to participate in.

Are there things you can skip? Do you have to be at the bachelorette party? All three bridal showers? The lingerie shower? The spa weekend? Post-wedding debrief brunch?

If you really want to be able to honor your friend on her special day and if you have enough money for a dress and shoes but not for three shower gifts and a bachelorette party, see if you can participate without the full bill.

No Hard Feelings

Glantz said she has seen brides “fire” their bridesmaids or maids of honor because they couldn’t afford to throw a bridal shower or a bachelorette party up to the bride’s standards — and that’s not a situation you want to set yourself or the bride up for because it can (and will) breed resentment.

“A lot of times,” Glantz says, “relationships can be tainted because of expectations that go south.”

So if the goal is maintaining your relationship with the bride without creating any ill will, you need to balance your desire to be there for your friend with your desire to keep a handle on your finances, even if that means excusing yourself from the majority of wedding festivities.

The bottom line is this: You don’t want to end up resenting your friend for her hand in your credit card debt — but you also don’t want her to resent you for bowing out in a less than gracious fashion.

How to Say No to Being a Bridesmaid

Bridal party fun
M_a_y_a/Getty Images

So you’ve gone through the considerations above, agonized over your pro and con list and finally decided to risk disappointing someone (ugh).

Now it’s time to figure out how to say no to being a bridesmaid.

Step One: Ask for Time to Think

You don’t have to make your decision right away — especially if it will depend on a few financial details.

Let the bride know you’ll need to check your schedule and, using honesty from the get-go, your budget. This will set the groundwork for bigger money conversations later on, letting the bride know you’re having — or choosing — to be financially conscious.

If you’ve already agreed to be a bridesmaid and now need to go back on your commitment, your situation is a little more precarious. If you’re too close to the wedding date, you might just have to suck it up if your decision to bail would cost the bride (or the rest of the wedding party) more money. If the wedding is still a significant amount of time away, you might still be able to excuse yourself. Just follow the rest of these steps to make it as painless as possible.

Step Two: Ask to Meet in Private

Rejection of any type stings, right? So try not to “break up” with your bridesmaid duties in front of a crowd. Instead, ask the bride-to-be to grab coffee with you and talk about it when there are fewer people around.

And yes, you should actually meet up for this part. If you’re seriously nonconfrontational, it might be tempting to bow out over text so you don’t have to see the disappointment on the bride’s face.

This is a bad idea.

“Text message can leave too much room for miscommunication,” Glantz says. Because of the lack of ability to convey tone or emotion, it can be easy for text conversations to be misunderstood — and an already difficult conversation could spiral out of control.”

Step Three: Be Straightforward, Firm and Polite

Be kind, but be honest.

If you make up excuses, your friend will pick up on your lie and be more offended than if you simply told the truth. Don’t make assumptions about the bride’s intentions or feelings, and stick to expressing your own point of view.

Glantz suggests saying something like, “I’m honored you asked me to be your bridesmaid, and I really want to be there for you, but right now in my life I have X thing going on, and I don’t think I can give 110 percent as a member of your bridal party. I still want to be there to support you and would love to help with other tasks.”

Let the bride-to-be know you’re excited about her big day and that you still want to be there for her in whatever way you can, but that you have to be realistic about how far you can stretch yourself and your budget right now.

Step Four: Present Alternatives

Glantz advises presenting alternative ways you could be involved in the upcoming events.

Offer to help the bride with any DIY elements or miscellaneous tasks that need to be done before the big day, or see if there is a way you could be meaningfully involved on the wedding day itself — but in a role that requires less financial responsibility.

You could read a poem during the ceremony, Glantz suggests, or wear a coordinating color that sets you apart as an “honorary bridesmaid” even if you’re not standing up next to the bride.

If the bride still wants you to join the bridal party at the bachelorette party, consider attending as a guest — but be clear about your role so you won’t be expected to plan (or fund) the event.

Made of Honor

There are a few possible outcomes to this conversation, but more than likely, the bride will understand your situation and encourage you to either attend as a guest or participate in bridesmaid-like activities without the financial commitment.

Besides, saying no doesn’t mean you’re abandoning your friend on her wedding day, Glantz says. It simply means you have to find alternative ways to honor and support the bride.

“You’re not doing anything wrong by saying no,” she says. “In fact, you’re doing a lot right because you’re taking the friendship and relationship seriously and doing what is best in the long run.”

If you blindly head into bridesmaidhood without considering finances, there’s a good chance you’ll end up ruining your relationship with the bride indefinitely — either by refusing to buy a $ 500 dress, or by charging that dress on a credit card and silently fuming as you hold your debt against your friend for months (or even years).

By gracefully bowing out of your role as a bridesmaid, you’re ensuring your ability to protect your friendship — and your finances — and you’ll be able to celebrate your friend’s marriage with her for years to come.

Val Kilmer Steps Out with His Lookalike Son After Being Cast in the Top Gun Sequel

Val Kilmer is returning to the big screen in the upcoming Top Gun sequel, but all the attention this week was on his 23-year-old son, actor Jack Kilmer.

The Heat star, 58, stepped out with Jack at a private screening of his son’s new film Carte Blanche. The duo, who share an uncanny likeness, posed for pictures together alongside the film’s director, Eva Dolezalova at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel on Thursday.

The film tells the story of a young actor who is suddenly launched into stardom as the lead in a major movie franchise. “Attending a high-profile Hollywood function, he comes across a mysterious man from his past, which begins his downward spiral as he is pushed to the brink of his sanity,” Dolezalova explained in the film’s tagline.

Meanwhile, Kilmer will return as hotshot fighter pilot Iceman in Top Gun: Maverick alongside his costar in the original, Tom Cruise, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed.

Kilmer’s comeback role in the film follows what has been a mysterious Hollywood hiatus for the actor.

Eva Dolezalova, Jack Kilmer and Val Kilmer.

His health issues first became apparent in January 2015, when a spokesperson told PEOPLE that he was rushed to the hospital “for a possible tumor.” Soon after, he took to Facebook to deny having a tumor, saying only that he “had a complication.”

After denying the illness for years, Kilmer finally opened up about his cancer recovery to The Hollywood Reporter in December 2017 in an interview alongside his children with his ex-wife Joanne Whalley: Mercedes, 26, and Jack, 22.

The article revealed that the actor’s two-year fight with throat cancer had “taken its toll” on the family and noted that Kilmer had undergone a procedure on his trachea which made his voice raspy and left him short of breath.

Kilmer credited his Christian Scientist faith in helping with his recovery and has undergone chemotherapy, according to THR.

Top Gun: Maverick is scheduled for release on July 12, 2019.

‘My Life Is at Risk of Being Undermined.’ Morgan Freeman Pushes Back Against Misconduct Allegations

Actor Morgan Freeman is maintaining that his behavior should not be classified as sexual assault, in the wake of harassment and misconduct allegations leveled against him earlier this week.

“I am devastated that 80 years of my life is at risk of being undermined, in the blink of an eye, by Thursday’s media reports,” Freeman said in a statement provided to TIME late Friday night. “All victims of assault and harassment deserve to be heard. And we need to listen to them. But it is not right to equate horrific incidents of sexual assault with misplaced compliments or humor.”

A CNN report published Thursday included accounts from eight people who accused Freeman of inappropriate behavior or harassment. Many of these alleged instances included what were perceived as inappropriate comments from Freeman. One woman claimed he once repeatedly tried to lift her skirt and asked if she was wearing underwear; another said the actor made so many comments about her appearance that she and her assistants stopped wearing fitted clothing around him. CNN reporter Chloe Melas also said the actor called her “ripe” when she interviewed him while six months pregnant.

Freeman, who issued an apology shortly after CNN’s story broke Thursday, said in the second statement that he uses jokes and humor to make people “feel appreciated and at ease around me,” though he added that, “Clearly I was not always coming across the way I intended.”

Still, Freeman maintains in the statement that his behavior never crossed certain lines.

“I did not create unsafe work environments. I did not assault women. I did not offer employment or advancement in exchange for sex,” Freeman said in the statement. “Any suggestion that I did so is completely false.”

Being a spontaneous traveler

When it comes to traveling, there are two kinds of people. Those that take the time to work out where they want to go, how they’re going to get there, what they want to see, how much it will cost, how they are going to raise the money, and what they would do if anything happened. Then, there are those who are spontaneous. These people go with the flow, and don’t worry or plan about any of these things – and many seem to have the times of their lives. But which one is best? Is being a spontaneous traveler overrated?

Pros of being a spontaneous traveler:

1) It’s less stressful. Planning a trip months in advance can often come with added stress before you go – and while you’re there. Nothing can go wrong if you didn’t have a set plan or schedule in the first place. A University of Alabama research study has found that taking shorter, spontaneous trips actually de-stresses people because you are not focusing on the ins and outs of what you should be doing, where you should be going next, and how to get there.

2) Sometimes the best discoveries are unplanned. If you leave your travels unplanned, you can often unearth some of the best-hidden gems around the world. Rather than sticking to a schedule, you follow your nose and have a flexibility that you wouldn’t have as a strategic traveler.

3) It keeps the excitement alive. One of the main emotions spontaneous travelers report during their trips is exhilaration. Leaving your fate in the hands of the unknown can often be perfect for thrill-seekers.

Cons of being a spontaneous traveler:

1) There is always a risk. Without proper planning, you never know where you will end up. The glorified image of rocking up at a hotel or hostel last minute might not be the case. Especially if it’s in the heat of summer, and everywhere in the area is packed with other travelers who had planned in advance! This will always leave you with the risk of sleeping rough in an unknown country or city.

2) It will be more expensive. When it comes to traveling, and vacations, there is one universal rule – book in advance to save money. The earlier you book your hotels, flights, and attractions, the cheaper they will be. If you leave it to the last minute, you will often be faced with bumped up prices that may cut your spontaneous trip short because you’ve run out of money.

3) You waste time. One of the benefits of having your travels all planned and mapped out is that you know where you’re going to next, and you can plan out what you want to see and schedule that into your itinerary. Without this, you may waste time to figure out your next move – time that could be spent exploring.

4) The fear of the unknown. If you’re a spontaneous traveler, you don’t know where you’re going to be one day to the next – and for many people, this can be incredibly disconcerting and knock their confidence, and this might hinder your travels. If you plan your trip, you will feel confident in your traveling and will be able to get the most out of your experiences.

Say What Now? Woman Poops in a Coffee Shop and Throws It At Employees After Being Denied Restroom Access [Video]

A woman got so fed up at a Tim Horton’s coffee shop employee for denying her access to the restroom that she decided to take a dump in the middle of the floor.

Not only did she relieve herself in front of other patrons simply trying to enjoy their coffee and light bites, she then picked up her sh*t and threw it at the employees.

The entire incident was captured on video.

via BuzzFeed:

A spokesperson for the Canadian coffee chain told BuzzFeed News that some of its restaurants have a “restricted access policy for restrooms to ensure the well-being of our guests.”

The spokesperson said that their current understanding of the incident is that the woman was denied access to the restroom based on her “past behavior.” This seemed to have sparked her rage.

The targeted employee called authorities, who continue to investigate the incident.

“We strive to create a welcoming environment for all of our guests and the communities we serve,” the coffee chain said in a statement. “We are deeply concerned by this video as the safety of our team members and guests is always a top priority for us.”

That’s what you call a sh*tty workday. Watch the footage below.

Falling in love when you have autism: ‘It’s like being on the same first date for 20 years’

Growing up with undiagnosed autism, Laura James had no idea how to handle love, until she met and married her neurotypical partner, Tim.

autism
Laura James at 25, when her autism was still undiagnosed

There are 700,000 people in the UK living on the autism spectrum, according to the National Autistic Society, but as many as 42 per cent of women with autism spend decades of their lives struggling to get a diagnosis. Here, Laura James, now 47 and author of Odd Girl Out (Bluebird, £8.99) explains how it feels to love, date and marry when you have autism without realising it.

‘I struggle to name and understand my emotions, so from early on in life, I have always split them into two categories: There are the good ones that are pink and soft. Then there are the bad ones, which are sludgy green, and feel jagged and dangerous. Love is confusing as it often comes with both these feelings.

Like many teenage girls I was obsessed with love. From 15, I was enchanted by a boy who lived a few streets away and who seemed only intermittently to notice me. He had everything I thought a boy should have: Irish roots, blue eyes and a detachment that acted like catnip to my teen self.

I would spend hours getting ready to “casually” bump into him at the coffee shop where he worked or at various gigs I knew he’d go to. We’d often go back to his parents’ house, where we lay on his bed listening to Bob Dylan. We were together but not together, almost pretending the other wasn’t there. We were friends, but it was unlike any other friendship I had. It always hovered on the edge of being more, but had it have gone any further I would have bolted.

“My undiagnosed autism had informed this seven-year crush”

It turned into a seven-year crush and, looking back, I can see it was informed by my then-undiagnosed autism. Other girls would have flirted fiercely or got bored and moved on to another boy. In retrospect, I think I liked the security of this pseudo relationship, where I could project my romantic fantasies on to someone without having to deal with the confusing mess that is the reality of many true relationships.

I (like many other women and girls with autism I have spoken to) found teenage dating and romantic entanglements difficult to fathom. We can lack social imagination and there seemed to be so many unwritten rules. If you liked someone, you were meant to pretend that you didn’t. It was all so confusing.

autism

Author Laura James, aged 25, when her autism remained undiagnosed

Many people with autism have intense interests and sometimes these can be focused on individuals. An autistic special interest can be all-consuming. Mine are usually relatively benign subjects, such as politics or fashion, but during the time I focused on this boy, he was literally all I could think about. If he had tried to kiss me though, I would have run a mile. Autistic girls often grow up more slowly than their neurotypical counterparts, and I simply wasn’t emotionally ready to have a relationship.

It’s often said that one of the main autistic emotions is fear and meeting someone new and knowing it could turn into a relationship is a terrifying concept for me. I would wait by the phone longing for it to ring and then, as soon as it did, I would be too scared to answer in case it was the object of my affection so I would just leave it ringing.

I felt this same sense of yearning and fear when I met my husband, Tim, ten years later. It was in rehab, a cold, bleak, scary place where I clung to the idea of him as if he were a life raft. He was suffering a vicious bout of depression. I had been admitted for a prescription drug addiction resulting from a misdiagnosis, something worryingly common for women with autism.

My husband says: “Its like being on the same first date for the past 20 years”

The stereotypes for autism are so strong and so based on the male model that medical professionals often fail to spot it in women, instead misdiagnosing them with mental health conditions such as Bipolar Disorder or Borderline Personality Disorder. If they are unlucky enough also to have physical health issues, such as Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (a connective tissue disorder, often seen in autistic women), they risk being written off as hypochondriacs or, in extreme cases, told they have Munchausen syndrome. I was misdiagnosed with Hyperventilation Syndrome and prescribed tranqulisers. That is one route to addiction, another is the alcohol and drugs that some autistic women use to ease social anxiety.

There is a forced intimacy in the cocoon of a psychiatric hospital, a soothing rhythm to the day and – somewhere between group therapy and a 12 steps meeting – I fell in love. I knew the feelings were different to what other people experienced. But again I was gripped by longing and terror.

I would wait for hours in the patients’ kitchen, hoping to get a glimpse of Tim, and then feel sick with fear as soon as I saw him. I would have imaginary conversations in my head, but struggle to engage with him when he was right there in front of me. The reality simply didn’t match the experiences of the heroines in the Jilly Cooper and Marian Keyes books I voraciously devoured at the time.

Somehow it worked and we dated and eventually married, although even today ours is a different kind of relationship. Tim has said it is like “being on the same first date for the past 20 years”. It is, he explains, the strange dichotomy of my need for structure and sameness and his failure ever to quite get into my head.

autism

Laura James with her husband, Tim

I like to live in what Tim calls “the grey”. It’s where I feel neutral. Any extremes of emotion leave me feeling de-stabilised. Falling in love can be full of highs and lows, and early on it left me exhausted and out of sorts. I knew, though, that my relationship with Tim was worth pursuing. It was initially uncomfortable, but because we got on so well, had so many shared interests and because he was funny and clever and unlike anyone else I had ever met, we somehow just got each other. Eventually, at least.

Unaware of my autism and completely different to me in terms of personality, Tim was loud and excitable and constantly lusting after adventure. While I craved the neutral, he wanted excitement and volatility. It shouldn’t have worked as a relationship. We are opposites. He is driven by emotion and is fiery, passionate, creative. I need life to be lived at one volume. He thrives on the kind of peaks and troughs that leave me longing for a dark room.

“We are married and very happily so, but not in the traditional sense”

I once suggested going to Devon for a weekend and within 10 minutes Tim had gone from researching B&Bs in Salcombe to looking at trips to the Arctic Circle and trying to persuade me to take three weeks off work for “the trip of a lifetime”. He needs newness constantly and cannot much see the point in going to the same place twice. I love sameness and will always try to sit at the same table and order the same dish in the same restaurant.

The turning point came with a startling realisation: we don’t argue. Ever. Early on in our marriage I was terrified of any sign of anger on his part. Even mild irritation left me quaking. I would shut down and not respond. In the end, we found a way to be and we haven’t had a cross word for more than a decade.

Years ago, Tim would snap over something small and I would retreat upstairs and not come down until I knew he had either gone out or had calmed down. I simply didn’t engage. Now he no longer even considers getting cross; he knows nothing will come of it. Problems are discussed calmly and solutions negotiated. Anything else seems bizarre to me. Why would anyone want to scream and shout at the person they love?

autism

Happily ever after: Laura James today

We are married and very happily so, but not in the traditional sense. We rarely go out with other couples. Instead, we spend time at home, together but separate. He makes music while I immerse myself in whatever special interest is enchanting my brain at any given time. I make no demands on him and bristle when he presses me to do something. But it works. There is a kindness in our relationship that is rare and precious.

A few weeks ago, we went shopping together for a sofa for our new house. Overwhelmed by the sensory overload of John Lewis on a busy Saturday afternoon, I turned to Tim and said, “please make it stop”. He knew what I meant. “I know,” he joked, “it’s awful – it’s just like being married.”

Hillary Clinton: Being a Capitalist ‘Probably’ Hurt Me in Primary Because Many Democrats Are Socialists

Eduardo Munoz

Hillary Clinton claimed Wednesday that declaring herself to be a “capitalist” during the 2016 presidential primaries may have hurt her with Democratic voters.

“Probably,” she said when asked by Time Inc. Brands CCO Alan Murray if the declaration hurt her. The pair appeared in conversation as part of the Shared Value Leadership Summit in New York City.

“It’s hard to know but I mean if you’re in the Iowa caucuses and 41 percent of Democrats are socialists or self-described socialists, and I’m asked ‘Are you a capitalist?’ and I say, ‘Yes, but with appropriate regulation and appropriate accountability.’ You know, that probably gets lost in the ‘Oh my gosh, she’s a capitalist!’” Clinton concluded, partly referring to the popularity of her primary rival, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), who ran as a self-declared democratic socialist.

R. Kelly Apologizes to Fans Amid #MuteRKelly Campaign: ‘I’ve Never Heard of a Show Being Canceled Because of Rumors’ [Video]

R. Kelly’s scheduled performance in Chicago on May 5 for the UIC Pavilion’s Pre-Mother’s Day Love Jam has been cancelled — thanks in part to the #MuteRKelly campaign.

On Sunday, R. Kelly took to social media to apologize to his fans for the cancellation.

“First of all, I want to apologize to all of my fans in Chicago, and basically all around the world wherever I’m performing at and they canceled me,” he said. “I don’t know why they canceled the show. I never heard of a show being canceled because of rumors, but I guess there’s a first time for everything. So I apologize to you guys and in the meantime, I’m going to try to get to the bottom line of it, you know, as far as my lawyers are concerned, and see exactly what happened and why I was canceled.”

The May 5 show would’ve been his first in Chicago since the ‘sex cult’ allegations were published last July.

A petition signed by 1,300 students at the University of Illinois in Chicago called for the cancellation of R. Kelly’s concert on May 5, citing “overwhelming public evidence of [Kelly’s] history of sexual misconduct.” The letter, co-written by Natalie Bennett of the Women’s Leadership and Resource Center at UIC, was to be sent to UIC Chancellor Michael Amiridis upon reaching 1,500 signatures.

With Time’s Up joining the #MuteRKelly campaign, we expect several (if not all) of R. Kelly’s shows to be cancelled in the coming weeks.

More Mortgage Loans Being Approved, But Blacks and Hispanics Still Likely to Be Denied

There is bittersweet news on the home loan approval front for African Americans, a new report reveals.

Mortgage loans are denied at the lowest rate in the past 20 years, but a stark divide remains between potential home buyers of different racial groups, according to online real estate firm Zillow.

The share of applicants nationally who are denied for conventional mortgages has dropped to 9.8%, according to data from the Home Mortgage Disclosure Act (HMDA), down from 18.1% in 2007.

Though a smaller portion of loan applicants overall are rejected, white or Asian borrowers are more likely to get mortgage approval than black or Hispanic borrowers.

In 2016, 8.1% of white applicants were denied for a conventional loan, as were 10.4% of Asian applicants.

In contrast, 20.9% of black borrowers and 15.5% of Hispanic borrowers were rejected for a loan. The report showed blacks are still twice as likely as whites to be denied a conventional loan, a racial gap disparity that has existed for decades. The gap is significant because owning a home can help most people, regardless of race, accumulate assets to boost their net worth.

Yet another report uncovered the wealth gap between black and white families across the country is not improving.

One finding disclosed African Americans are less likely to be homeowners, to own their own business, and to have a retirement account than whites.

In 2016, based on the most recent data available, when African Americans owned such assets, they were worth significantly less than assets owned by whites. For instance, 41% of African Americans were homeowners in 2016, versus nearly 72% of whites. Furthermore, blacks who did own homes had half as much home equity as whites.

For all groups, the Zillow report identified denial rates are down sharply from 2007. For that year, 34.3% of black applicants and 30% of Hispanic applicants were denied for mortgages. White and Asian borrowers were denied 12.7% and 16.2%, respectively, of the time.

The lingering disparity among races is visible in homeownership. Black homebuyers had the least purchasing power last year. They could afford 55% of homes for sale, while whites could buy about 78% of listed homes.

And while coming up with a down payment is the biggest hurdle to homeownership for all potential buyers, black Americans were more likely than those of other races to say qualifying for a mortgage was a barrier.

“Mortgage approval data point to both progress and stubborn inequities in the American housing market,” said Zillow Senior Economist Aaron Terrazas.

“By some measures, the gap in mortgage approval rates between whites and blacks is as narrow as it has ever been.

However, black mortgage applicants are still more than twice as likely as whites to be denied, a visible legacy of historical discriminatory policies. For the large majority of homebuyers, getting approved for a loan is the first step on the road to homeownership, and these continued disparities represent an ongoing barrier to housing and social equity in America.”

Another interesting discovery surfaced in the Zillow report. For all racial and ethnic groups, borrowers in suburban areas had the best chances of being approved for a mortgage—8.4% of suburban homebuyers were denied for a loan. Ten percent of urban borrowers and 11.5% percent of rural borrowers were denied.

Who is Charity Dingle’s secret son on Emmerdale and what has she said about being raped by DI Bails?

EMMERDALE viewers were left reeling by emotional scenes which revealed that Charity Dingle has a secret son.

Here’s what you need to know about her child and the heartbreaking circumstances which led the character to give him up.

The revelation that Charity Dingle has a secret son left Emmerdale fans reeling

Who is Charity Dingle’s secret son on Emmerdale?

Emmerdale fans were left in tears when it was revealed that Charity Dingle has a secret son.

The character gave birth to her child after being raped as a teenager and was forced to give him up after her ordeal, but now it seems he’s going to track his mother down and arrive in the village.

It was first reported late last year that Charity’s secret son would be making an appearance to the Dales.

It’s thought she gave the baby up when he was just days old, as she couldn’t face keeping him under the circumstances in which he was conceived.

The revelation came when Charity chatted up a random man after an angry row with her partner Vanessa.

She gave him the boot, screaming that she wished every man “would be wiped off the face of the earth”, but then pretended to Vanessa that he was awaiting her upstairs.

However, Charity returned to her room alone, where she tearfully opened the box of baby clothes.

Charity told Vanessa she was raped by a policeman in emotional scenes

What did Charity say about her rape ordeal?

The confirmation of Charity’s secret child came the night after she revealed she had been raped, beaten and kept prisoner by a policeman at the age of 14.

After seeing the police officer DI Mark Bails on TV talking about the Phil Webb case, she tearfully told Vanessa the truth about her past in tearjerking scenes.

Charity recalled how the seemingly kind DI Bails had offered her a place to live when she was on the streets working as a prostitute.

She told Vanessa: ‘But I thought I was lucky because there was heating a fridge and a telly.”

But the first night she stayed at his flat the sick cop raped her, before keeping her imprisoned.

Charity managed to escape one night to call the police after he hit her.

Vanessa urged Charity to go to police, but she refused and said: “How are you supposed to report the man who raped you to the man who raped you?”

Furious at Vanessa’s persistence in trying to get her to report the crime, Charity threw her out of the house.

However, Vanessa ignored her partner’s wishes and called the police to report a “sexual abuse and rape”, leading to further tension between the pair.

7 TV Shows at Risk of Being Canceled

It’s a scary time of year for TV fans, as the broadcast networks begin announcing which of their shows are returning for another season in the fall and which are getting the chop.

While most shows have already been dealt their fate, there’s a few still on the bubble. The networks will have to make their final decisions by mid-May, so as the deadline draws near, here are seven of the biggest shows still waiting to find out if they’re renewed or canceled.

How To Get Away With Murder (ABC)

How to Get Away with Murder

With the exception of the series finale of Scandal airing at the end of April, ABC has yet to announce the fate of any of its Shondaland shows. But it’s How to Get Away with Murder that is most at risk of getting the chop. An Emmy-winning performance from star Viola Davis hasn’t been enough to keep viewers invested, likely due to confusing and convoluted storylines.

Chances of Returning: With the loss of Scandal, not to mention Shonda Rhimes signing a deal with Netflix, ABC will likely hold on to this show until there’s an exciting pilot that needs a spot on the lineup.

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (ABC)

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Despite the power of the Marvel brand, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. hasn’t been a ratings giant for ABC. Even still, DVR playback has been pretty solid for the series, which follows the law enforcement organization known as S.H.I.E.L.D. as they investigate threats and strange occurrences around the world.

Chances of Returning: After five seasons and those decent DVR ratings, it would be surprising if this one gets cut without one final season to celebrate the series and end things properly.

Gotham (FOX)

Gotham

The fourth season of the Fox series, which tells the backstories of some of Batman’s biggest characters before they turn into the heroes and villains they were destined to be, has experienced a ratings drop of about 20% from Season 3. The show recently garnered interest when it teased the reveal of the Joker, but was it enough to get the show a fifth year?

Chances of Returning: It’s a bit of a toss-up as to the fate of Gotham. But seeing as the show was often in the top ten for the network even when experiencing a dip in the ratings, it’s more likely to be renewed than canceled.

The 100 (CW)

The 100

Season 5 of the CW series The 100 hasn’t even aired yet, but the show is sitting on the bubble anyway. Set nearly a century after a nuclear war wiped out civilization, the show follows 100 juvenile delinquents sent from a spaceship of survivors to travel back to Earth in an attempt to repopulate the planet.

Chances of Returning: With the fifth season not premiering until the end of April, it’s a bit early to decide which side this series will land on. But with a pretty sizeable fanbase, we’re placing our bets that the series will return for a sixth run.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine (FOX)

Brooklyn Nine-Nine

After five seasons, the comedy about a group of police officers at Brooklyn’s 99th precinct is actually better than ever. The show is focusing more on its vibrant cast of characters, doling out storylines that fans are quite invested in. The trouble is, the upgraded stories have also made it feel like a final season, perhaps because showrunner Dan Goor is anticipating his show getting the axe.

Chances of Returning: This one is too close to call. Members of its fanbase are insanely passionate about the show, but it currently delivers the tiniest audience across all broadcast sitcoms. Not great news for those hoping to see it come back for a sixth season.

Marvel’s Inhumans (ABC)

Marvel's Inhumans

Being a product of the Marvel universe didn’t help Inhumans gain any traction when it debuted late last year, and ABC admitted that the eight-episode series didn’t perform the way the network had hoped. The series, about an isolated group of superhumans forced to fight to protect themselves, premiered with a 0.9 rating and things didn’t get much better from there.

Chances of Returning: Very, very unlikely. The possible final nail in the coffin occurred this week when Inhumans star Anson Mount was cast as Captain Christopher Pike on Star Trek: DiscoveryIt’s tricky for a show to continue when its lead has already jumped ship.

iZombie (CW)

iZombie

iZombie, about a medical resident who assists police with the qualities she obtained from becoming a zombie, has been on the bubble ever since it debuted in 2015. The fourth season premiered in February with just under a million viewers and has managed to essentially keep the same ratings that it had throughout Season 3.

Chances of Returning: This one could go either way, but one final season would mean they’d have enough episodes for syndication — something that the CW has been known to do in the past.

Sammi Stirs Up Drama on ‘Jersey Shore’ Premiere Without Even Being There

Is it still a family vacation without the entire family? That was the question during the Thursday, April 5, premiere of Jersey Shore: Family Vacation. Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi, Ronnie Ortiz-Magro, Vinny Guadagnino, Deena Nicole Cortese, Paul “DJ Pauly D” Delvecchio, Jenni “JWOWW” Farley and eventually Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino all reunited in Miami for the revival, and it only took “13 seconds” to bring up Sammi Giancola, the original cast member who turned down making an appearance.

Most of the cast (and fans) assumed it was because she was in a new relationship and didn’t want to live with her ex Ronnie. Right away, Deena revealed she was pretty upset Sam decided not to come. However, since they were so close, the 31-year-old took on the responsibility of defending Sam — that was a pretty big role, though. Little did she know, Pauly D, 37, would bring a Sam doll along that had a sound box inside it so that it could repeats Sam’s famous sayings — you know, like, “Ron, stahp!”

Sammi Giancola Ronnie Ortiz-Magro Jersey Shore

Ronnie, 32, who dated Sammi on and off during the original show and for a bit afterward, admitted he was “so confused” why Sam wasn’t there. He also revealed that after the show wrapped in 2012, the pair dated for a while and moved in together, but she wanted to get married sooner than he did. Once she gave him a timeline, he cheated and they didn’t work out.

It didn’t take long for Deena to get irritated when the entire house started playing with the doll and making jokes. “If I have sex with her, is that still cheating?” Ron asked, picking up the doll. “I’m just carrying her like I did the past seasons.” The rest of the cast seemed to agree that since Sam wasn’t there, making fun of her with the doll was OK.

After a few drinks, Ron brought it up to Deena. “She’s not here. She’s not our friend. She doesn’t have our back,” he told her. “Cause if she did, she’d be here with us. Bottom line. I’m having a motherf—king kid, do you understand? And I’m still here. She’s seven months pregnant. What the f—k does she got going on that’s more important than me?”

Deena claimed Ron felt that way because he was “still not over” Sam. However, it turned out that Deena and Ron’s issues actually went deeper. Their fun drunken night quickly turned into crying next to the pool when Deena revealed Ron was the only cast member who didn’t reach out to her when her dad died 2016, and she was still upset about it.

He felt so bad that he broke down crying as well, saying that Sam came between their friendship and that after his split from her, he was in a bad mental state and was depressed, so he messed up and didn’t reach out to Deena.

The next day, Snooki tried to drown the Sammi doll in the pool. Jersey Shore: Family Vacation airs on MTV Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET.

This Supermodel Has Something to Say About Being “Too Old” for Miniskirts

It’s high time to throw out those outdated, age-related fashion dictums. And as of late, more and more celebrities have been speaking out against this idea of being “too old” for something. Heidi Klum recently responded to criticism she’s faced for modeling lingerie at her age (she’s 44, by the way), and now, Amber Valletta (who is also 44) has something to say about being “too old” to wear miniskirts.

The supermodel wrote a “Love Letter to Miniskirts” for British Vogue, wherein she explains how she found the confidence to own the wardrobe staple at her age. In fact, she notes, she wears short skirts more now at 44 than she did at 24.

“I like the simple physical freedom of having my legs out. It feels sexy without trying to be. I love the way Saint Laurent does the mini. The clothes are so empowering, yet feminine and chic. They just feel like me,” Valletta writes. “When you put something on, no matter how short, you want to feel comfortable and confident.”

She ends the letter on powerful note, writing, “Someone told me recently about a school of thought that says women over a certain age shouldn’t wear miniskirts. I haven’t ever heard that and, clearly, I am not listening.”

LED lightbulbs that replace Wi-Fi networks are being tested in the real world

Li-Fi bulbs real world

Li-Fi is a curious technology that’s been on the cusp of real-world applications for years. The idea is to use visible and infrared light instead of radio signals to create a wireless internet network, creating a (theoretically) more stable alternative to crowded Wi-Fi channels.

The technology has been in the concept stage for years, but Philips has announced that it’s conducting a real-world test in the office of a French architecture firm in Paris to see how it performs in the real world.

Is being born to be a mother really a thing?

by

Betsy Shaw

posted in Life

A while back, I came across a video clip where writer Elizabeth Gilbert (Eat Pray Love) talks with Oprah about the fact that she doesn’t have children and how she often feels the need to explain why. I think it’s an important topic.

In the video, Gilbert explains how, in her perspective, there are three types of women and every woman falls into one of the three categories. The 3 types of women are:

1. Women who are born to be mothers.

2. Women who are born to be aunties.

3. Women who should not be allowed to be within 10 feet of a child.

She goes on to say that it’s so important for women to know which category they fall into because “tragedy and sorrow results from ending up in the wrong category.”

The reason this interview stuck in my head- – and why I responded with a kind of passionate comment — is because I didn’t find myself fitting into any of the categories. I knew what Gilbert was getting at, in general, but there are some serious nuances of life and motherhood that can not, should not, be so easily overlooked.

I would never describe myself as being born to be a mother. Yet I have children. And, while there has been a certain amount of emotional tumult in my life, it’s thankfully not a tragedy.

Here’s what I wrote in the comment section:

Oh but where do I fit in? What group is there for someone who most likely was not born to be a mother or wife even, someone who still chafes almost daily at the enormous responsibility , the forced domesticity, the relentless pressure to be more, better, to have maternal instinct running through my veins, someone who is convinced I was never meant to be a domesticated animal, yet still went along for the world’s most conventional ride and ended up with two daughters who I adore and would die for despite my nagging conscience telling me I wasn’t cut out for this? I wasn’t cut out for this.

Where do I fit in to this tidy list of three categories?

You see, I’m not a born mother. And I’m definitely not an auntie. I do love children, but don’t feel a natural inclination to dote on all of them. Perhaps I wasn’t even meant to have children — I ponder that sometimes when I’m feeling my most stressed and stretched and imprisoned by the relentless routine and the sometimes agonizing, yes agonizing, heartbreak.

But I did have children. And I am a mother. And I’m determined to do right by them, because they didn’t ask to come here. At least not directly.

I invited my daughters into this world in a momentary lapse of reason, heat of passion, or leap of faith, call it what you will.  They are here and I am their mother. Sometimes — in ephemeral moments, I even feel like a good, dare I say, natural one.

So, no. I was not born to be a mother. But my kids have made me one. And they still are shaping me into who I was born to be, day by day. There’s no tragedy in that.

Knowing which one you are is essential to your happiness.

Walmart’s home grocery delivery is being expanded to 100 cities

After dipping its toe in the waters of grocery delivery back in 2016, Walmart is now ready to go all-in.

The nation’s largest retailer brings same-day home delivery of groceries to 100 cities from coast to coast in 2018.

RELATED: Walmart’s latest experiment: Higher prices online than in stores

Walmart ready to ramp up grocery delivery

Walmart’s effort to expand its grocery delivery service will give more than 40% of U.S. households access to this time-saving option.

At the moment, grocery delivery from Walmart is only active in six markets — Dallas, Denver, Orlando, Phoenix, San Jose and Tampa.

By year’s end, that will completely change.

Walmart has more than 18,000 personal shoppers ready to pull your order, and thousands more will be onboarded this year as the program ramps up.

When the program is up and fully running around the nation, the grocery delivery will take place from more than 800 stores.

And if you’re the kind of person who worries about somebody picking out your produce or meats, Walmart has an answer for you.

The company says it puts all personal shoppers through a thorough three-week training program. The focus of the training is on how to select the freshest produce and choicest cuts of meat for online grocery delivery customers.

Actual delivery of your order will be outsourced to third-party delivery companies like Uber and Deliv, which Walmart currently uses in its six test markets.

The grocery delivery fee will be $ 9.95 — with a requirement of a $ 30 minimum order. But you can get your first order delivered free with promo code FRESHCAR, according to Walmart.

Groceries can be ordered online at Walmart.com/grocery or on the existing Walmart Grocery App.

Two benefits to Walmart’s plan

Now, you might balk at paying nearly ten bucks to have somebody deliver your groceries but there are actually two upsides here.

First, you get access to Walmart’s low grocery prices without the hassle of shopping in a crowded store.

And when you consider that Walmart scored dead last in the newly announced American Customer Satisfaction Index, that’s a good thing, in this case. You can enjoy the savings while skipping what a lot of U.S. consumers think of as an unsatisfactory shopping experience.

The second upside is that the company says the prices of groceries through the online delivery program will be the same as in stores.

That’s big, considering Walmart recently launched a new effort to price items higher online than they are in stores:

Walmart Irish Spring soap

Thankfully, you won’t have to put up with any of that price bifurcation when you’re an online grocery delivery customer!

‘Catfish’ Finale Recap: Woman Falsely Confesses To Being a Catfish

Ending with a bang! The Wednesday, March 7, season finale of Catfish turned one of the most perplexing and twists yet into what was, quite possibly, the happiest ending in the show’s history.

When Catfish producers first heard from Savenia from Rochester, it was in the form of an email. The then 17-year-old had reached out to the show about a guy she’d been dating online for five years, Dylan. In a cryptic email message she confessed, “I’m not the person he thinks I am. I guess this makes me a Catfish.” Unbeknownst to Savenia, her online beau of five years also reached out to the show some months later asking for help identifying Savenia.

Dylan on ‘Catfish'
Dylan on ‘Catfish’

Host Nev Schulman immediately decided to fly Dylan out to Los Angeles. After meeting the 18-year-old aspiring wedding cake designer, Nev and co-host Max Josephs were convinced he was the victim of a Catfishing scheme. Considering his girlfriend Savenia refused to video chat, would never meet up in person and had a slew of overly staged modeling shots on her Facebook profile, all signs pointed to her being a bonafide Catfish.

When Savenia agreed to meet Dylan in L.A., she admitted over the phone, “I’m not really who I say I am.” Obviously the last thing anyone expected was for Savenia to show up looking exactly like her photos, but that’s precisely what happened. The tall, attractive young woman excitedly bounded out of a producer’s car and into Dylan’s arms, hugging him emotionally. So, why did she claim to be a Catfish?

Savenia revealed that she assumed she was a Catfish because she “posted a lot of photos of me looking really good, like photoshopped.” She added, “I feel like I was Catfishing him. My boobs were photoshopped. My butt was photoshopped.” Max flatly called her out explaining that in today’s world, it is assumed that everyone posts edited photos. Nev agreed, saying, “You don’t look that different.”

Aside from her misinterpretation of the true meaning of being a Catfish, Nev and Max were thrilled for this love story to reach a happy ending. Nev exclaimed, “I’m overjoyed. This very rarely happens for us.” Three months later, the duo had plans to move in together and appeared madly in love.

Roseanne’s 2 Beckys Talk Being Pitted Against Each Other

Roseanne is officially coming back and for the first time ever, both Beckys will be sharing the screen! Lecy Goranson left the show for seasons 6 and 7, retuned for season 8, then left again in season 9. Sarah Chalke replaced her for those three seasons. However, in the reboot, both actresses will be back: Goranson will play Becky while Chalke will play Andrea, who hires Becky to be a surrogate for her.

Since they never got to work together on the show, once Goranson, 43, got the call for the reboot, she asked for Chalke to return, too. “I actually requested that Sarah come back and that we’d have scenes together when I first heard about the show coming back. I’ve said this before, but I really don’t like how people pit us against each other,” she told Us Weekly exclusively.

“It’s ridiculous,” Chalke added, pointing out that the one photo shoot they did participate in together for the sitcom, they were asked to arm wrestle each other. However, about a year ago, they both appeared on Inside Amy Schumer and “had the best time,” Chalke, 41, added.

“That was really cool! I really wanted to know about Sarah’s experience on the show. I wanted to know what happened and how she felt about things, and it was just really cool,” Goranson added, also nothing that the way they both are included in the reboot really works.

“It could have been very broad, it could have been really over the top, but I feel like it was written in a way that was very dynamic and interesting,” the actress noted. “I feel like the way Sarah’s character was written was very interesting and could have gone a different way, in a much broader way, and I really appreciate that the writers are that good to do that. It just makes it more grounded.”

Roseanne premieres on ABC Tuesday, March 27, at 8 p.m. ET.

Black Panther’s Costume Designer On Being Inspired by Ancient African Tribes

Marvel’s Black Panther movie is one of the most highly anticipated films of 2018. But beyond a star-studded lineup of incredible black talents such as Michael B. Jordan, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, and Lupita Nyong’o, the film also includes an action-packed storyline equipped with a variety of jaw-dropping costumes. So we caught up with Ruth E. Carter, the Academy Award-nominated designer behind the film to talk about how the ancient tribes of Africa inspired her designs of the superhero costumes.

Carter is no stranger to recreating representations of blacks in films—she’s also the creative mastermind behind some of the most iconic black films in history—School DazeMalcolm XAmistadDo the Right Thing, Roots (2016) and Selma, to name a few. Below she shares her design process and inspiration behind the film’s costumes.

Ruth Carter

Ruth Carter

Ruth E. Carter on working with the film production team and planning for the design process.

Marvel Studios gave me a blueprint. They had a lot of plans for the costumes, whether it was visual effects, special effects, or photo doubles. So they told me the elements the costume needed to have. From rich saturated colors and beautiful prints to textures—these things were rooted in African culture.

So we researched all of these wonderful different ancient tribes from the continent of Africa such as the Xhosa, Zula, Himba, and Maasai, and learned about their secrets and the reason behind doing things a certain way. For instance, when The Himba Tribe used this beautiful red clay that they put all over their bodies (including, jewelry hands, and hair) it was for the desert dwellers to have moisturizer. It also made your skin and hair really soft. It even had Shea butter—it was also so colorful and intense. It could even be bottled and sold today as a moisturizer.

On the other hand, the Maasai Tribe was known for all of this beautiful beadwork—so we wanted to direct the costumes towards that look. The stacked rings are a very prominent visual jewelry and were worn by ancient African tribes—that was also part of the framework that Marvel said we would like to have. I hired a jewelry designer who does African-inspired jewelry. She created rings, and necklaces—featuring a hand-tooled element that really pulled the looks together. We also pulled inspiration for the costumes from the draped robe attire that you often see in the Nigerian culture.

This woman describes being sexually assaulted by Aziz Ansari, and it is heartbreaking

This woman describes being sexually assaulted by Aziz Ansari, and it is heartbreaking

This woman describes being sexually assaulted by Aziz Ansari, and it is heartbreaking

There aren’t many words left to express our disappointment in men lately. With the announcement of Time’s Up, the very powerful movement against sexual harassment, we still hope things will improve. But in the meantime, there has been so much public trauma lately. It hasn’t been an easy few months. Beginning with Harvey Weinstein and his “open secret” abuse, women (and some men) have been much more open about their own personal bad experiences with big names in Hollywood. We have grown so used to hearing famous names tied to sexual assault allegations, it’s hard to be surprised anymore. But still, we are. And now, Aziz Ansari’s name has been added to that growing list of alleged abusers.

An anonymous photographer in Brooklyn, New York is accusing Aziz Ansari of sexual assault. She detailed their encounter for Babe. (Be warned: Her account is extremely thorough and upsetting to read.) The woman, who goes by the name “Grace” in the post, met Ansari about four months ago at a 2017 Emmy Awards after-party. After the two connected over film and photography, they exchanged numbers. Ansari asked Grace on a date. But when she met up with him, everything went wrong.

According to Grace, Aziz Ansari took complete advantage of her vulnerability and ignored her verbal cues.

Ansari took Grace to dinner, but according to her, he rushed through it to get her back to his apartment. He made advances on her multiple times in many different ways, ignoring her requests to take it slow. He kissed her, groped her, and pressured her for sex over and over as Grace continued to say no. Eventually, she found the courage to leave.

“I cried the whole ride home. At that point I felt violated. That last hour was so out of my hand,” she told Babe. “I didn’t leave because I think I was stunned and shocked. This was not what I expected. I’d seen some of his shows and read excerpts from his book and I was not expecting a bad night at all, much less a violating night and a painful one.”

When Aziz Ansari texted Grace the next day, she was honest with him about what happened.

“I believe that I was taken advantage of by Aziz,” Grace told Babe. “I was not listened to and ignored. It was by far the worst experience with a man I’ve ever had.”

Many women and female presenting people are aware that being clear and communicative is necessary when it comes to dating men. Saying “no” is one of the first things many of us are taught about sex. We learn that we have the right to say “no,” and how that word is supposed to hold a lot of power. But in reality, it often doesn’t. It’s easy for men to say they misread a social cue or gaslight women into feeling like they should have done more in the bedroom. Ansari’s behavior is disappointing and inexcusable.

Here’s the deal: Aziz Ansari wrote an entire book about relationships.

Ansari’s book Modern Romance isn’t a hilarious, cheeky memoir about dating. Modern Romance is the result of Ansari personally studying the ins and outs of dating across generations. He wrote the book as a deep dive into the sociological background of men, women, dating apps, text messages, marriage, and everything in between. It is based on years and years of research. Ansari is flush with knowledge and insight that should, frankly, make him very aware of the verbal and non-verbal cues coming from a woman he chose to corner multiple times in his apartment. Aziz Ansari knows better. And yet, he chose to behave this way.

“It took a really long time for me to validate this as sexual assault,” Grace told Babe. “I was debating if this was an awkward sexual experience or sexual assault. And that’s why I confronted so many of my friends and listened to what they had to say, because I wanted validation that it was actually bad.”

We are so saddened that someone who has largely been acknowledged as an ally for women (and a self-proclaimed feminist) could do such a thing. It is not at all easy for anyone to come forward about being sexually assaulted. And when the assaulter is very famous and beloved, it makes it that much harder. We commend Grace for speaking out.

The Mother of the Little Boy Modeling H&M’s ‘Coolest Monkey’ Hoodie Is Mad at Black People for Being Mad: ‘Get Over It!’ [Photo]

Well, here’s a plot twist we weren’t expecting.

While the rest of Black culture is upset at H&M for putting a Black boy in a hoodie that reads ‘Coolest Monkey in the Jungle,’ the little boys mother is not.

Her name is Terry Mango and she doesn’t understand why everyone is outraged.

After the offensive photo began making rounds, a lot of people questioned where the child’s mother was when the company decided to put him in this hoodie. Some argued that she probably wasn’t around, while others accused the brand of photoshopping the shirt on the boy after the shoot was done.

As it turns out, Terry was present during the shoot and watched as her son dressed in the outfit.

She took to Instagram to address the situation:

“[I] am the mum, and this is one of hundreds of outfits my son has modeled. Stop crying wolf all the time, [it’s] an unnecessary issue here. Get over it.. That’s my son, [I’ve] been to all photoshoots and this was not an exception. Everyone is entitled to their opinion about this… I really don’t understand but not [because I’m] choosing not to, but because it’s not my way of thinking. Sorry.”

Let’s keep in mind that Terry and her son are from a different country — a country that doesn’t share America’s same history with racism. It could be that she truly doesn’t understand the racist connotations around the word ‘monkey’ and Black people in America.

Even still, someone over at H&M most likely did and allowed it to happen.

Newble added: “I looked at the camera and, like, my mom and best friend , ‘Chelsea, it was real,’ and he was real, and this was a real situation.”

In the end, she finally believes him and bursts into tears as she accepts the ring. She later told ABC that the couple loves to laugh and joke all the time. They’ve been dating for two years.

“I was completely surprised,” Newble said of the proposal. Morley added that he was “nervous” to pop the question, but planned to do it at the amusement park. He told WPLG that the proposal was the longest two minutes of his life.

The lovebirds haven’t set a date yet, and are waiting until Morley tries out for the NFL to do so.

“I have so many girlfriends and they’re just ready to have dinners and parties now,” Newble said.

Tiffany Haddish Wants to Know if NeNe Leakes Is ‘Crazy’ For Real, Accuses Her of Being Drunk During Her Comedy Show: ‘I Got Concerned’ [Video]

Tiffany Haddish stopped by Bravo’s ‘Watch What Happens Live’ alongside Cynthia Bailey and had a question about Cynthia’s ‘The Real Housewives of Atlanta’ co-star, NeNe Leakes.

When a caller asked Cynthia how she felt about NeNe’s shade towards her friendship with Kenya, Cynthia laughed it off as no big deal. Tiffany then asked Cynthia if NeNe is ‘crazy for real?’

“Is she crazy for real? You know I did a comedy show with her,” said Tiffany.”That was a mess.”

Andy asked for clarity:

“Did you think she was funny?”

To which Tiffany replied:

“She was funny at first, but then she got drunk. And then it got —  I got concerned.”

Just as she was about to spill the tea, Andy cut to commercial break. We don’t know what show Tiffany was talking about, but the streets think it may have been the show where NeNe made those distasteful rape comments.

Sexual Harassment, Office Culture, Resumes, and “Boys Being Boys”

sexual harassment, office culture, resumes, and boys being boysWe’ve all been hearing and talking about the surge of men getting fired, losing control of their companies, and otherwise being disciplined for sexual harassment and other bad behavior — and we’ve all been heartened by the groundswell of support for the women and men brave enough to come forward. I’m hopeful that we are at the beginning of a tectonic shift in the way sexual harassment is handled at companies, where the default becomes “I believe her” — it’s about time. (Full disclosure, considering the stock photo: this is not a #metoo story, but my heart goes out to the many, many, many women and men who have such stories.) There’s been a lot of discussion and think pieces on this topic in the press — but here are a few questions I haven’t seen discussed that might  be interesting topics here: 1) How do you think these past few weeks will affect the companies, colleagues, and protégés (both male and female) of these men? How will they ever distance themselves enough? 2) For those of you who work at men-dominated firms where, perhaps, a “boys will be boys” attitude has prevailed in the past, has anything changed in the past few weeks? What are the positive changes you’ve seen (whether from HR, company/firm-wide meetings, etc.) that make you optimistic about the future?

With regards to the first question about resumes and protégés: Let’s say you run a production company in Hollywood. A man comes in to interview for an opening and his resume notes that he worked closely with Harvey Weinstein — which, before a couple of months ago, would have been a huge resume boon (granted, there’d been rumors about his behavior). Do you consider his resume? If he makes it to the interview stage, do you ask about it — whether he “knew” what was going on and was ok with it, whether it was part of company culture that he accepted and perhaps expects at your company? If it’s a woman instead of a man — with the same resume — how does that change things?

I’m thankful to be one of the seemingly few women who doesn’t have a #metoo story (at least not that at the office that I can remember), but I’ve been watching the news closely in part because I worked closely with a male VIP in my law firm days and with a female VIP in my journalism days, and they’ve always played a large part in my resume and in job interviews. Fortunately, neither has been accused of anything (knock on wood) but I can’t help thinking that if either were, then future resumes/interviews would be very, very, very different. (Obviously this is a totally minor concern in comparison to those of the women who have been sexually harassed or assaulted, but it’s something to think about.)

Readers, what are your thoughts?

Psst: In the past, we’ve discussed a lot of sexism issues, including sexual harassment at workhow to deal when you work with sexist pigs, what to do when your client hits on you, and how to make your boss stop flirting with you.

Kendra Wilkinson Hits Back After Being Criticized for Cotton Picking

Kendra Wilkinson responded to critics who blasted her on social media on Wednesday, November 22, for sharing a photo of herself picking cotton in a Texas field.

The 32-year-old reality star stopped alongside a cotton field while road-tripping with husband Hank Baskett’s family. “Always wanted to pick cotton. Lol,” the former Playboy Playmate captioned a photo of herself holding a handful of cotton on her Instagram Story, and shared by The Shade Room, on Wednesday, November 22.

After Wilkinson’s followers slammed her actions, she responded to the backlash in a slew of tweets. “Lol. I just wanted to pick cotton from a plant cuz I’ve always wondered how it really felt. Never in my life thought of color or race at the time,” she wrote on Wednesday. “I was trespassing n ran up to grab some cotton. I am not racist. Was just having fun n wanted to feel n wondered how it felt. Hahahahah. I can’t believe I’m getting accused of being racist when I’m sitting here with my black father in law rt now baffled at the accusations. F–k off to anyone who don’t know me n know what I’m about. Just cuz I picked some f–king cotton. It’s a f–king plant. Omg I can’t.”

Wilkinson also shared a video on her Instagram Story reiterating the same message.

The WeTV star clarified her intentions after her followers took to the comments section of her most recent Instagram photo, a family holiday card, to criticize her visit to the field.

“Racist piece of s–t,” one user wrote. Added another: “People are upset because you are joking about history that you are just simply ignorant about. Some things just keep to yourself.”

Despite the criticism, fans of the Kendra on Top star came to her defense. “Been watching Kendra from day one, she’s a free spirit,” one Wilkinson devotee commented. “You are just combing through social media praying for anything to pound on and rip it to shreds… Hello her husband and children are part black.”

Echoed another fan of The Girls Next Door alum, “Don’t give the haters the benefit of explaining what ur doing like picking cotton.”

Another fan chimed in with words of support: “Keep your head up. Ignore the ignorance. I have always liked you and your real fans know you are not a racist and you love everyone equally. Live! Laugh! Love!”

How to Get Hired After Being Fired

interviewer-holding-job-applicant-resume

Being told that you are going to be let go is one of the worst things any employee can hear. Not only are you out of a job, you now have to explain to a prospective employer why you were let go, likely putting you at a disadvantage when compared to other candidates.

At this point, it’s normal for you to feel disheartened, discouraged, and unsure about where to start. Fortunately, how you format your Cover Letter and Resume and how you approach your dismissal in an interview can improve your chances of finding new employment.

In this post, we address how you can stand out among your fellow candidates and get offered a job by overcoming obstacles related to your dismissal in your Cover Letter, Resume, and interview.

Why Were You Fired?

First things first. The reason why you were let go is essential to how you will address it in your Cover Letter, Resume, and interview.

Keep in mind that people are let go for plenty of reasons that are completely unrelated to performance.

For instance, the company you work for could be downsizing or closing. Even something like there not being enough work for you to do is a valid reason for your employer to dismiss you.

When it’s performance related, however, it can be tricky, but handling being fired in your Cover Letter and Resume is significantly easier than discussing it in an interview. If you were fired for a specific reason, the best thing to do is ask yourself why and if that is something you can change.

Be practical and realistic. If you were fired for being habitually late but haven’t made any effort to be more punctual, perhaps it’s time to work on that aspect of yourself. That way, you can present an honest answer when your interviewer inevitably asks, “How will that issue affect you at our company?”

Moreover, changing unprofessional practices now will prevent you from being dismissed for the same reason in the future.

In short, start preparing for your job search by asking yourself why you were fired or let go and, if it was related to your performance, what you can do to stop it from happening again.

Writing a Cover Letter Post-Termination

The purpose of a Cover Letter is to show a prospective employer that you are a worthy candidate for a position in their company; you discuss your achievements, your education, and your relevant experience—not your weaknesses or professional fiascos. Those conversations are better saved for an interview.

It’s worth mentioning that some sources say, if you were dismissed for something other than your behavior, to include this information in the Cover Letter. This may be good advice to combat a well-known termination, like when the company you work for unexpectedly goes belly up.

However, a great Cover Letter focuses on selling you and setting you apart from other candidates, so you can snag that follow up phone call from the interviewer. Not to mention, Cover Letters are usually only a page and often not more than four paragraphs. So, why waste that precious space?

Staying Professional in Your Resume After Being Fired

Consider two things when writing your Resume after being let go:

  1. How long did you work there?
  2. Was that job related to the one I am looking for?

Let’s say you only worked for a company for a month and were fired for something unpleasant like a bad attitude, it might be a good idea to leave that position off your Resume. This especially holds true if the job is irrelevant to the position you are currently looking for.

That said, use your judgment. Many employers expect to see a chronological work history with very few gaps, so cutting huge chunks of your work history is ill-advised. Also keep in mind, you may have to explain those gaps in the interview.

Handling a Termination in the Interview

The interview is your final opportunity to outshine your fellow candidates and land a job. How you answer tough questions could make or break your chances.

Non-performance related dismissals are fairly easy: just be direct about your situation. Your interviewer should be versed enough in business to know that things like downsizing or seasonal dismissals happen and do not reflect poorly on the employee.

That said, when you’re unexpectedly let go for reasons other than your own actions, it can be upsetting. Avoid debasing the company you worked for, even if you found out you were let go by going to work to a closed door and a sign reading “out of business”. Always stay positive and professional while discussing a dismissal.

When you were fired due to your behavior, things get a bit more difficult. But, again, the best option is to discuss the situation professionally. You may be tempted to explain what happened by bringing up problems with the company that let you go or the boss that fired you, but this can make you seem unprofessional.

Instead of making excuses or passing blame, focus on what you learned from the situation and how you’ve improved yourself or your skillset to mitigate this problem in the future. Essentially, turn a failure into a triumph by expressing how you evaluated and bettered yourself.

If you want to give your interviewer proof that you’ve corrected the fault that got you fired and know of an old manager who can confirm it, consider asking them to write a Letter of Recommendation. This will help you when you say the issue you were once fired over is no longer a problem.

In the end, how you approach it is up to you, but demonstrating growth and being honest will, at the very least, show your potential employer that you’re a ready professional that can handle adversity.

Hearing “You’re Hired!” After “You’re Fired!”

It can be hard to find a new job after hearing “you’re fired!” It could leave you skeptical about your future and in a funk that makes finding a new job much more difficult.

Improve your chances of being hired by a new company by using these tips on how to present yourself in your Cover Letter, Resume, and interview after being dismissed.

One Benefit of Being Black: We’re More Resilient to Stress

By all accounts, being black in America is stressful. But African Americans seem to have found a way to prevent some of the effects of that stress.

(Image: iStock/g-stockstudio)

Researcher Shervin Assari and his colleagues, through numerous studies, have shown that blacks seem to overcome many of the factors—such as lower educational attainment, increased anger and hostility, feelings of hopelessness, and a high number of stressful life events—that usually lead to mental and physical disorders.

Even having a greater number of depressive symptoms early on didn’t lead blacks to the same higher risk of chronic medical conditions or higher mortality rates as their white counterparts.

Assari, assistant professor of psychiatry and public health at the University of Michigan, writes in an article for The Conversation:

Research, including work I have done with my colleagues at the University of Michigan, demonstrates that although white Americans are, on average, the “healthiest group,” they are also, on average, far less “resilient” than black Americans. It seems that vulnerability is a cost of privilege, and resilience comes as a result of adversity.

He goes on to write that:

White Americans seem to be more vulnerable to certain psychosocial risk factors for a wide range of physical and mental health outcomes compared to minority groups. In other words, they are less resilient—less able to successfully adapt to life tasks in the face of highly adverse conditions.

One of the studies showed that blacks and Hispanics had a lower risk for depression, generalized anxiety disorder, and social phobia. And that blacks, specifically, had lower risk for panic disorder, substance use disorders, and impulse control disorders.

Another study showed that the prevalence of a lifetime major depressive disorder was significantly lower in blacks, at 10.4%, than whites, at 17.9%. But it did note that the burden of the disorder was higher on blacks, who received treatment less often and were more likely to rate their disorder as severe.

So why is it that blacks, despite having more stress, are less susceptible to that stress leading to mental and physical health problems? Assari theorizes that it’s because blacks, through their history of adversity, have learned to deal:

Minority groups … have consistently lived under economic and social adversities which has given them firsthand experience and ability to believe that they can handle the new stressors. For blacks, a stressor is anything but new. They have mastered their coping skills.

So as Assari himself puts it, for blacks, it’s basically true that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.

The JFK Files are being released today, but what exactly are they?

The JFK Files are being released today, but what exactly are they?

The JFK Files are being released today, but what exactly are they?

Two major things are supposed to happen today: Taylor Swift is expected to release another video and the Trump administration is releasing the JFK Files. We all know why T-Swift’s video drop is important, but what are the JFK Files anyway? The John F. Kennedy assassination files consist of all the documents surrounding his shooting, and they’ve been slowly released to the public over the course of the past two decades, after the government ordered the National Archives to make all the documents public within 25 years back in 1992.

Today’s document drop will include about 3,000 files, but those files could have hundreds of pages each and are said to include notes from law enforcement about Lee Harvey Oswald’s early life (aka, the man who shot JFK), and other notes from the Warren Commission, which investigated the shooting in 1964. There is also reportedly less controversial, but equally interesting, files in the batch, like notes from Jackie Kennedy to her staff about funeral arrangements.

Either way, the JFK Files are incredibly fascinating for history buffs and non-buffs alike.

And for conspiracy theorists. Since the Warren Commission found that Oswald acted alone, there have been many a theory about what happened that day in Dallas when the president was shot. It’s these conspiracy theories that actually drove Congress to pass a law about releasing government files.

(Original Caption) Texas Governor John Connally adjusts his tie (foreground) as President and Mrs. Kennedy, in a pink outfit, settled in rear seats, prepared for motorcade into city from airport, Nov. 22. After a few speaking stops, the President was assassinated in the same car.

More specifically, was Oliver Stone’s 1991 movie JFK that prompted Congress to order the National Archives to eventually release all the information to the public, so that Americans didn’t go absolutely crazy hypothesizing about events the government *actually* had the facts to back up. The law says that the government has to release archives unless it’s deemed by the president that they’d put Americans in danger.

Trump is all about the JFK Files, even going so far as to calling them “so interesting!” in a tweet this week. However, some people close to Trump were advocating to delay the release. His friend and advisor Roger Stone and CIA Director Mike Pompeo specifically recommended not releasing more documents, claiming they could reflect badly on intelligence services of the time.

However, North Carolina Rep. Walter B. Jones said in a statement this week, “After 54 years, there is no reason, for the sake of honesty and integrity in America, that the facts of the JFK assassination should not be made public.”

So whatever’s in those documents will now be available to the public, and Americans will finally know what really went down half a century ago.

Emmy Rossum has had enough of being ‘fat-shamed’

By both male and female producers…

emmy rossum

From the editors of InStyle US
Words by Faith Cummings

This week, Emmy Rossum became one of the latest actresses to speak out against the treatment of women in Hollywood. The 31-year-old spoke out earlier this year about a nightmare experience with a male director where she was forced to audition in a bikini.

Then, this week she took to Twitter once more to talk about her harrowing past encounters with film producers, just days after Jennifer Lawrence revealed she’d been told to lose weight by a female producer.

‘I have had FEMALE producers make comments to me about what I’m putting in my mouth,’ Rossum tweeted. ‘Things like “Don’t get fat. No one will watch this.”’

She then recalled a moment more than a decade ago, where a male photographer asked her if she was going to eat a piece of cake during the lunch break for a magazine cover shoot. Rossum said she not only took a second piece of cake to prove she wouldn’t tolerate disrespect, but also stared at him as she ate it.

‘If I’m honest, in that moment, I feel shame,’ she tweeted. ‘I don’t want the cake anymore. I don’t want to celebrate. Don’t even want to keep shooting.’

Rossum was both shocked and proud when she found out so many actresses were speaking up about harassment in Hollywood. ‘I was blown away by all the women coming forward to share their stories,’ she stated. ‘Ones that feel immediately sadly familiar.’

She ended her series of tweets with a call to action for the industry. ‘We must look at ourselves,’ she affirmed. ‘At how we can make our industry kinder, more supportive, of how — as women AND MEN — we can build each other up.’

We’re inspired by Rossum’s bravery and all those who have had the courage to speak up about the rampant misconduct in the movie business.
