Miami Dolphins to Discipline Players Who Protest During National Anthem With Fines, Suspensions or Both

Miami Dolphins players who protest on the field during the national anthem could be suspended for up to four games under a team policy issued this week.

The “Proper Anthem Conduct” section is just one sentence in a nine-page discipline document provided to The Associated Press by a person familiar with the policy who insisted on anonymity because the document is not public. It classifies anthem protests under a large list of “conduct detrimental to the club,” all of which could lead to a paid or unpaid suspension, a fine or both.

Miami’s anthem policy comes after the NFL decided in May that teams would be fined if players didn’t stand during “The Star-Spangled Banner” while on the field. The league left it up to teams on how to punish players. None of the team policies have been made public.

The NFL rule forbids players from sitting or taking a knee if they are on the field or sidelines during the national anthem, but allows them to stay in the locker room if they wish. The new league rules were challenged this month in a grievance by the players union.

The NFL declined to comment. Team officials had no immediate comment.

Tragic: Husband Finds Wife and Her Mechanic Lover Both Dead from Carbon Monoxide Poisoning After They Had Sex in the Garage [Video]

A New Jersey man came home Monday night to find both his wife and her lover dead in the garage.

The two died of carbon monoxide poisoning while having sex.

via People:

Kahali Johnson said he returned home that night and smelled a strong odor coming from the garage of his apartment, according to WABC. So, he went to investigate, WABC reported.

In the garage, Johnson said he found his wife, Tameka Hargrave, and their mechanic near a running vehicle.

“As I tried to step to open the last garage door, I see the mechanic, he’s laid out,” Johnson told the station. “She’s just a few feet away, she’s laid out. And pretty much I had to call 911 because, at this time, with that level of emissions, I knew that they were gone.”

Sources told KXAS that Hargrave, 39, and the unnamed mechanic, 59, were allegedly having sex in the car when they succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning. Law enforcement sources reportedly told the station that Hargrave had allegedly been having sex with the mechanic in exchange for his car work.

The Newark Police Department did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Both were pronounced dead at the scene and police said the deaths appeared to be accidental, NJ.com reported. Newark Fire Division evacuated the building, and one person was taken to a local hospital, according to the publication.

As for Johnson, the grieving husband told WABC that he blames the apartment complex.

“Basically she died because of carbon monoxide,” Johnson said. “They do not have adequate alarm systems, because if there had been an alarm in that garage, people would have been alerted to the fact that it was going on.”

Sad.

5 Comics That Will Satisfy Both Children and Adults

Walk into any comic book store, and you’re just as likely to find adults as children. That’s because nowadays, the folks producing all the wonderful work on the stands know that both age groups are interested in the stories they have to tell. Marvel’s MAX line, for instance, is aimed towards adults tired of mainstream censorship, allowing for gratuitous violence and foul language. DC’s upcoming Zoom and Ink imprints, on the other hand, are hand-tailored for younger audiences.

But there are plenty of comics out there that adults and kids alike can easily enjoy — comics that straddle the line between simple and complex, between entertaining and engaging. Without any further ado, here are five comics that will satisfy children and adults.

Marvel’s Star Wars

han solo star wars jason aaron john cassaday
Han Solo rates his comics 12 parsecs out of 12.

The Star Wars universe presents endless storytelling opportunities, from the hope-infused A New Hope to the dire straits of The Empire Strikes Back. Marvel has released several different Star Wars comics to accommodate all the possibilities, but none embrace the spirit of adventure quite like Jason Aaron and John Cassaday have been able to with their series simply titled Star Wars.

The comic picks up after the destruction of the Death Star, revealing what Luke, Han, Leia and the gang were up to between movies. Full of action and intrigue, Aaron does a wonderful job of capturing each character’s unique voice, and Cassaday renders it all in an exciting, cinematic style.

The expanded stories of beloved characters are lure enough for kids and adults, but the fact that they’re so well done makes it even more of a draw for both parties. It’s like having a Star Wars movie in the palm of your hand: a space opera for all ages.

Adventures of Superman

adventures of superman dc comics
One of the many art styles you’ll find in this anthology series.

As readers demanded more nuanced storylines from comics, it became harder for the nearly invincible Superman to deliver. Where to draw the line between excitement and complexity? Adventures of Superman circumvents this problem in a clever way.

Written and drawn by various industry talents, the series presents a grab-bag of stories starring the Big Blue Boy Scout, and it’s that grab-bag quality that allows the stories to succeed where others haven’t. If you want Supes fighting a giant robot sent by Lex Luthor, you’ve got it. If you want a more introspective piece chronicling a day in the life of the hero, there’s that, too.

No matter what specific issues it focuses on, they all embody the essence of the legendary hero and respect his legacy. Depending on what part of that legacy appeals to you most, there’s almost certainly an issue for you, young or old.

Bone

jeff smith bone
More adventure than you can shake a bone at.

You know those stories that you get completely lost in? The ones that keep you up all night because of the absorbing worlds, the characters that make you laugh and cry, and the boundlessness of imagination within? Bone is that and so much more.

Creator Jeff Smith wrote and drew all 55 issues over the course of 13 years, a testament to hard work — and it shows. Often compared with The Lord of the Rings in scope, the adventures of the Bone brothers are as heartfelt as they are hilarious, as epic as they are intimate, and as fun as they are thought-provoking.

If you’re an adult, Bone will make you feel like a kid again. If you’re a kid, Bone will light your creative spark like nothing else. Either way, you’ll be in as much awe as Fone Bone (the protagonist) ever was.

Spider-Man: Blue

spider man blue jeph loeb tim sale
‘Spider-Man: Blue’ will make you blue — but in the best way.

A more controversial choice for this list, Spider-Man: Blue is quite possibly the best entry in Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale‘s “color” series (which also includes Hulk: Gray, Daredevil: Yellow, and Captain America: White). But why the controversy?

Spider-Man has always been the everyman hero — someone with normal problems, but abnormal powers. This miniseries covers two main issues: love and death. While often considered “adult” themes, they are things that we all have to deal with at some point in our lives. And with Spidey, there’s always levity to balance tragedy.

What also makes Spider-Man: Blue an all-ages read is that it’s a retelling of classic Spider-Man stories — namely, those centering around Gwen Stacy, Peter Parker’s first true love. As fun as early Spider-Man comics are, it can be rough trudging through the campy writing style, so this modern take almost acts as a history lesson for kids and a journey down memory lane for adults.

Calvin and Hobbes

calvin and hobbes bill watterson
The days are just packed.

Though the titular characters are named after long-dead philosophers, writer-artist Bill Watterson makes darn sure that time spent with the boy (Calvin) and his imaginary friend/stuffed animal tiger (Hobbes) is full of life, bursting at the seams with whimsy and wit. Yet true to the spirit of philosophy, this comic strip will get you thinking as frequently as it will rupture your spleen with laughter. Watterson maintains the balance expertly.

What Calvin and Hobbes does best is show what it’s like to be a kid: the relationships you have with adults at a young age, cramming as much in as possible before bedtime (and then finding ways to stay up past that), and of course, imagination without limits. That makes it easy for just about anyone to relate to, either out of longing nostalgia for youth or experiences you’re having as someone around Calvin’s age.

Choices, Choices

At the end of the day, no one’s going to stop a kid from buying The Walking Dead or an adult from purchasing a Big Nate collection. There’s a world of comics out there just waiting to be explored, whether you’re 9 or 99. But comics like those listed here are the kind that will generate the most discussion between age groups, the kind that will connect them where others will not, the kind that will mean the most to all generations of comic book readers.

Staycation Ideas For Spring Break With Your Sister If You’re Both Home & Broke

Just because you’re flat broke, it doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a wonderful vacation experience. Spring break is the one time all college students look forward to, but it can be over before you know it, so it’s important to make the most of it. Take the time to reconnect with your family, and enjoy time with them. If you’re broke, you might not be able to jet away with friends to Cancun for two weeks, but there’s no reason you can’t have a staycation with your sister.

A great staycation is the perfect chicken soup for the soul, and it’s going to save you money in the process as well. It’s easy to get a little down in the dumps when all your friends are going abroad and having a ball. So, here are some of the most amazing staycation ideas you can use to ensure you and your sister have the time of your lives, without ever having to jump on a plane.

Do brunch – sibling style!

If there’s one mealtime that is perfectly suited to a sibling staycation, it has got to be brunch. You don’t have to go out to a fancy brunch joint either, you can (and should) cook up a feast yourselves. Get the griddles ready, and prep the kitchen, because making brunch is an excellent bonding activity, and the perfect way to get your staycation off to a delicious start. Mix things up, and don’t be afraid to have a go at things you’ve never tried before. This is something that can really help make brunch exciting.

Spend a day totally outside

There will be good days and bad days over spring break, and you want to pencil in the best day as the one you choose to spend outside. There will be plenty available for you to do, it’s just important to make sure you spend the whole day outside, making the most of the nice weather. You might think about having a picnic, or visiting the ocean – biking or hiking your way around the city is another really great idea as well.

Revisit childhood hotspots

There are so many wonderful places you will no doubt have visited as a child, and it’s time to retrace your steps and check these out again. Make a bucket list of the favorite places you visited when you were children, and take the time to go see them again on your staycation. This is a great way of reminiscing, and having the best possible experience during your staycation. Strengthen the bonds of sisterhood by taking some snaps of these places, and stick them on your social media.

Do a bit of shopping

We’re not just talking about the generic shopping trips you’d have in the designer stores. We mean going a little farther out and experiencing a different side of shopping. Check out some awesome thrift stores and flea markets, and purchase some bargains in time for the summer – it’s just around the corner! Stocking up on the right summer wardrobe with plenty of time to spare is the perfect way of bonding together as sisters.

How cool are these ideas for helping you have a memorable and nostalgic staycation as sisters?! There’s no rule saying you have to get away for any length of time, and this is a money-saving way of getting the most out of spring break. We just hope the ideas we’ve given appeal to the both of you.

Credit Card Fraud and Identity Theft Aren’t the Same, but We Hate Them Both

I’ll admit it. I got suckered.

I got phished and fell for it.

It was about 10 years ago, and these scams weren’t commonplace just yet. I responded to what looked like an email from my bank verifying my PIN.

Dumb move. My rent money was taken out of my account at an ATM in Romania. Seriously. Luckily, my bank was great about handling it, and it was all resolved.

I told everyone that I had been a victim of identity theft and even went on the local TV station to talk about it. Phishing scams were a relatively new concept back then.

I was wrong. It wasn’t identity theft. It was credit card fraud.

Potato? Potahto? Actually, no. Credit card fraud and identity theft are two different crimes, and the difference is significant. Here’s what you need to know.

Credit Card Fraud Is a Form of Identity Theft

Technically, credit card fraud is one type of identity theft. Legal Dictionary defines credit card fraud as “the unauthorized use of an individual’s credit card or card information to make purchases, or to remove funds from the cardholder’s account.”

That means some shady character has gained access to one of your accounts through a stolen card, account number, PIN or anything else that lets them access your account.

Those card skimmers at the gas pumps are a prime example of how credit card fraud occurs. The skimmers steal your card information when you swipe your card for fuel, then the fraudster sells that information on the darknet or uses it to take or spend money from your account.

A simple way to remember the difference between credit card fraud and identity theft is that credit card fraud involves one account getting compromised.

How to Prevent Credit Card Fraud

There’s no surefire way to prevent all credit card fraud unless you want to go back to only using cash or trading chickens. There are, however, some ways to minimize your risk.

  • Keep your credit cards in a safe place. Keep them in a wallet or purse that’s close to you at all times outside of your home.
  • Shred your credit card bills and unwanted bank statements. Basically, shred anything with your account numbers on it.
  • Do not give your card or account information over the phone unless you initiated the conversation. If you called your favorite store, fine, but if the store called you, how do you know it’s legit? You don’t.
  • If you’re worried about gas pump skimmers, first look for the small seal that shows that the pump panel has not been opened. Then use the “credit” option on your debit card. Never type in your PIN. Even safer, prepay inside the store for your gas.
  • Never give out information via email. Phishing scams are everywhere. Keep in mind that your bank or credit card company will never ask you for your PIN. Also, that prince in Nigeria does not actually have millions of dollars for you. Don’t give him anything.

What to Do if You’re a Victim

If you discover that one of your bank or credit card accounts has been compromised, take action right away. The sooner you react, the better chance you have of saving your money.

  • If you have a card that lets you freeze it easily from your phone or a computer, do it right away.
  • Keep a close eye on your statements for the account in question. You’ll want to look for any new charges you did not make.
  • Call your bank or credit card company and let it know about the issue.
  • Report the theft to the police. They likely won’t do much to help, but having that report could help you get your money back from your bank or credit card company. In any case, it won’t hurt.
  • Change your online passwords. You don’t know exactly what information the bad guys have. You want to change your passwords occasionally anyway. (But not too often.)
  • Call one of the three national credit reporting agencies, Experian, Transunion or Equifax, and file a fraud alert. If you do this with one of the companies, it will automatically alert the others. No need to call all three.
  • File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission. Like the police report, this can help as you try to clean up the mess.

Identity Theft Goes Beyond a Single Account

While credit card fraud is the compromising of one account, identity theft occurs on a broader scale. Identity theft is defined by Legal Dictionary as “the act of stealing another person’s personal identifying information in order to gain access to his financial resources, or obtain access to other benefits, such as money, credit, or insurance benefits.”

In other words, the bad guys have your personal information and can use that to gain access to your accounts, open new accounts or even take out loans in your name.

Or perhaps someone uses your identity to conceal their illegal actions. Maybe they need medical help and don’t have insurance, but you do.

There’s even a problem in the U.S. with child identity theft.

Scary stuff.

If you are getting phone calls or bills in the mail about debts you know nothing about, don’t simply dismiss them. Look into the charges and see if someone is using your information.

How to Prevent Identity Theft

Identity theft uses your personal information against you. That means you need to take steps to protect that information from others who might want to use it for their own gain. Here are a few tips.

  • Protecting your Social Security number is crucial. Keep your Social Security card in a safe place and don’t carry it with you. If you happen to lose it, the card could easily fall into the wrong hands. Also, only give out that number when it’s absolutely necessary.
  • Never respond to unsolicited requests for your personal information. Whether it’s a phone call or email, always be wary. If your bank contacts you asking for information, politely decline. Then, call your bank directly and let it know about that phone call or email. Same for any other contacts.
  • Shred all unneeded documents that may have your Social Security number or other personal information on them. When in doubt, shred it.
  • Be smart with your online passwords. Keep them varied and difficult to guess.
  • Order a copy of your credit report. The law requires each of the three credit reporting agencies to provide you with one free copy of your report each year. Look for any old accounts that could be removed or ones you do not recognize.

What to Do if You’re a Victim

The steps to prevent and repair identity theft are largely the same as those for credit card fraud, but there are a few added measures.

  • Find and close any new accounts opened in your name. When you report the fraud to a credit bureau, it should be able to tell you what new accounts have been opened.
  • If you think your Social Security number was compromised, report it to the Social Security Administration.
  • If your driver’s license was stolen or compromised, report that to your nearest Department of Motor Vehicles. You may need to get a new one.
  • Suddenly have a police record for no reason? You may have to clear your name of wrongdoing. It won’t be fun or easy, but you can’t ignore it. Call your local law enforcement agency to start the process. You may want to seek counsel from a lawyer first.
  • Keep a close eye on your mail for any other solicitations for payment. School loan notices, medical bills, even letters from the IRS could be signs that you have more issues to address.

The easiest way to get started is to go to identitytheft.gov and report your identity theft case. The site will walk you through all of the steps you need to get the situation fixed.

Protect Your Identity and Your Credit Score

It’s a scary time for these kinds of crimes. We’ve become an increasingly digital society, and our information is out there for the taking. I mean, when one of the three major credit bureaus leaks your information, you know things are bad.

What can you do? Your best bet is to simply keep close tabs on your accounts and passwords, and be smart when you shop online.

If you really want to protect yourself, you can pay a credit monitoring company to alert you if anything looks amiss. Some of them can also help you recover from identity theft.

Credit card fraud and identity theft happen. They’re not the same thing, but they both suck. A bit of diligence now can save you a lot of headaches later.

Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor Both Set to Be Highest-Paid Athletes for 2017

Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Conor McGregor are meeting up in the ring in a historic boxing match on Saturday night—and the two combatants will almost certainly become the year’s highest-earning athletes based just on their haul from the big fight.

The exact amount of money that the two fighters will make is unknown at this point. Their earnings will be based on several factors, including ticket sales, pay-per-view purchases, and how the purse will be split between the fighters—the terms of which are kept confidential.

Yet Sports Illustrated reported that undefeated boxing champ Mayweather is expected to earn at least $ 100 million from the fight on Saturday, August 26—and that’s just a baseline. The Associated Press estimated that as many as 50 million people could watch the fight in the U.S. alone, and that Mayweather would pull in roughly $ 200 million. Another estimate, from the (U.K.) Telegraph, has it that if the forecasted revenues and prize splits are accurate, a $ 230 million take for Mayweather “is not out of the question.”

Even if Mayweather’s earnings wind up on the low side of the estimates, he will instantaneously become the highest-paid athlete of 2017. The list of the world’s highest-paid athletes from Forbes is currently led by soccer sensation Cristiano Ronaldo, whose combined salary and endorsements total $ 93 million. Bear in mind that Mayweather’s estimated fight earnings of $ 100 million to $ 200 million will come on top of money that he makes from endorsements and sponsorship deals, which bring in well over $ 10 million annually.

Mayweather’s opponent on Saturday night, the brash Irish mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor, also should leapfrog Ronaldo to become the second-highest earning athlete of 2017. Analysts say that McGregor should walk away from the fight with $ 70 million to $ 100 million. (That’s assuming he can walk away. A group of doctors has expressed strong concerns that McGregor, who has tons of experience as an MMA fighter but has never boxed professionally, is at serious risk of being hurt on Saturday, the New York Times reported.)

McGregor has already earned $ 34 million over the past 12 months, according to Forbes, including roughly $ 7 million from endorsements. So once McGregor’s Saturday night take is added to his earnings total, he should become 2017’s second-highest-earning athlete, behind only Mayweather.

This won’t be the first time that Mayweather and one of his opponents are the year’s top two highest-earning athletes. In 2015, the year’s highest-paid athlete, according to Forbes, was Floyd Mayweather—and coming in second was fellow boxing great Manny Pacquiao. The two met in the ring that year in a historic fight that wound up being the highest-grossing pay-per-view event of all time, with more than $ 400 million in sales just in the U.S.

Forbes estimated that, largely as a result of this single match, Mayweather earned $ 300 million in 2015, and Pacquiao took home $ 160 million. That easily put them in the top two spots on the list.

This Saturday’s fight is expected to trounce the record for pay-per-view sales, with revenue perhaps hitting as high as $ 700 million.

While the incredible haul from the fight will obviously have an impact on both fighters, it is McGregor who is more likely to have his life upended by the huge influx of cash. Floyd Mayweather is 40 years old. He won his first boxing title in 1998, he is 49-0 in the ring as a pro, and he has been earning tens of millions of dollars annually for years.

McGregor, on the other hand, is only 29, and before going pro as an MMA fighter, he worked as a plumber, according to Esquire. Last year marked the first time that McGregor cracked the list of the top 100 highest-paid athletes, earning an estimated $ 18 million.

It goes without saying that there’s a huge gulf in the net worth of the two opponents in Saturday’s fight. Not long ago, CBS reported that Mayweather’s net worth was an estimated $ 650 million, compared to “only” $ 22 million for McGregor. In other words, depending on McGregor’s take just from Saturday’s fight, he might be increasing his net worth (on paper, before taxes are factored in) by a factor of five.

President Trump backtracks to blame both sides in Charlottesville violence

HARI SREENIVASAN: Yesterday we reported on President Trump’s updated statement criticizing violent neo-Nazi and white nationalist groups for the violence over the weekend in Charlottesville. That was yesterday.

Today, in an impromptu news conference originally about an executive order on infrastructure, Trump defended his statements from over the weekend and went even further.

For more on all this, I’m joined by the NewsHour’s John Yang.

John, at first, it was about infrastructure. There were visual aids. There were flowcharts. And then:

JOHN YANG: It was a remarkable performance, Hari.

Reporters were initially told that the president wouldn’t take questions. It was just going to be a statement. But he’s described as fuming at the press and the coverage of his reaction to Charlottesville, and this afternoon he came out swinging, first on CEOs quitting White House advisory panels.

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: Take a look at where their product is made. It is made outside of our country. We want products made in the country.

Now, I have to tell you, some of the folks that will leave, they’re leaving out of embarrassment, because they make their products outside. And I have been lecturing them, including the gentleman that you are referring to, about you have to bring it back to this country.

HARI SREENIVASAN: He was referring to the Merck CEO, but there were many other CEOs.

JOHN YANG: There were three CEOs altogether and also the head of another panel, CEOs of Intel, of Under Armour, and then the head of a manufacturing alliance.

And then, just a few moments ago, Richard Trumka, the president of the AFL-CIO, announced that he’s quitting. He said that Mr. Trump’s today, in his words, repudiate his forced remarks yesterday.

HARI SREENIVASAN: He doubled down. This was kind of the person that almost was forced, as Richard Trumka says. You could see how uncomfortable he was in front of the teleprompter yesterday. But, today, he was incredibly confident. He was sure of himself. And this is what he thinks.

JOHN YANG: Yesterday, we are told that especially Chief of Staff John Kelly pressed for what happened yesterday. They wanted to get this behind them, so they could move on to their agenda in September, but the president brought it right back today, back to square one.

HARI SREENIVASAN: He was also defending — he took sort of several moments and opportunities to defend the alt-right in not so many words, by really pointing out there were other good and decent people there, and even how he perceived the protests on Friday night, where those men were carrying torches.

WATCH: Scenes from Charlottesville invoke racist legacy in the present day

JOHN YANG: And he sort of also defended why it took him more than 48 hours to specifically condemn white supremacists, neo-Nazis and the Ku Klux Klan.

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: I didn’t wait long. I didn’t wait long. I didn’t wait long.

I wanted to make sure, unlike most politicians, that what I said was correct, not make a quick statement. The statement I made on Saturday, the first statement, was a fine statement, but you don’t make statements that direct unless you know the fact.

And it takes a little while to get the facts. You still don’t know the facts. And it is a very, very important process to me. It is a very important statement. So I don’t want to go quickly and just make a statement for the sake of making a political statement. I want to know the facts.

HARI SREENIVASAN: This is not the same person that tweets within minutes. When he’s angry about something, he takes to Twitter very quickly. He makes statements sometimes too quickly.

And here he is sort of saying the opposite, that he’s deliberate, that he waits for facts and information.

JOHN YANG: Critics pointed out, have already been pointing out that this is the same man who went to Twitter to criticize, accused President Obama of wiretapping him in Trump Tower without any evidence, and make a number over claims that — without any evidence.

HARI SREENIVASAN: And even in the remarks about the Merck CEO who left the council, it was an incredibly short amount of time, as soon as he left the council, that he sort of took Merck through the ringer.

JOHN YANG: He went — yesterday, after Kevin Frazier resigned from the council, he took to Twitter and said, great. Now we have more time to secure these ripoff high drug prices, even though, at Merck, Frazier has led the way in sort of being transparent about drug costs.

And he also accused him today of manufacturing drugs overseas.

HARI SREENIVASAN: Which makes you wonder, why did you have him on, on the commission in the first place, right, if you thought these things about him?

And there’s also this equivalency that he’s making throughout this defense of what happened in Charlottesville.

JOHN YANG: He went back to the original statement on Saturday, that this was something — he criticized what he called the alt-left.

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: Excuse me. What about the alt-left that came charging at the, as you say, the alt-right? Do they have any semblance of guilt?

(CROSSTALK)

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: Let me ask you this. What about the fact they came charging — that they came charging with clubs in their hands swinging clubs? Do they have any problem? I think they do.

I am not putting anybody on a moral plane. What I’m saying is this. You had a group on one side and a group on the other, and they came at each other with clubs and it was vicious and horrible and it was a horrible thing to watch.

I think there’s blame on both sides, and I have no doubt about it, and you don’t have any doubt about it either.

HARI SREENIVASAN: It’s because, really, what — when you see the statement that was constructed yesterday, and when you see how forthright he is, this is what he believes, and Saturday is what he believed.

JOHN YANG: People — some at the White House have been telling me that, talking about the Saturday statement, that he saw this as an issue of law and order, that he saw unrest, he saw civil unrest and violence.

He didn’t really distinguish which side. He saw this more as an issue of law and order, not ideology.

HARI SREENIVASAN: And, you know, there was also kind of a fallacy of the slippery slope here with George Washington.

JOHN YANG: That’s right.

He was asked about this whole controversy of removing Confederate memorials like the Robert E. Lee statue that sparked Saturday’s violence in Charlottesville.

Mr. Trump, in response, brought up the founding fathers who were slave owners.

READ MORE: Robert E. Lee opposed Confederate monuments

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: George Washington was a slave owner. Was George Washington a slave owner? So will George Washington now lose his status? Are we going to take down — excuse me. Are we going to take down — are we going to take down statues to George Washington?

How about Thomas Jefferson? What do you think of Thomas Jefferson? You like him? OK, good. Are we going to take down his statue? Because he was a major slave owner. Now, are we going to take down his statue?

So, you know what? It’s fine.

HARI SREENIVASAN: There has already been reaction.

JOHN YANG: There has been reaction.

House Speaker Paul Ryan tweeted just a little bit ago, saying that — I have lost it on my phone here, but that there can be no moral ambiguity.

He was — also won praise. David Duke, former grand wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, tweeted: “Thank you, President Trump, for your honesty and courage to tell the truth about Charlottesville and condemn the leftist terrorists in Black Lives Matter and Antifa, anti-fascists.”

HARI SREENIVASAN: So, these are the people that are happy with the president and his remarks today?

JOHN YANG: They — our colleague P.J. Tobia talked to Matthew Heimbach, who is the head of the Traditionalist Worker Party, described him as being ecstatic on the phone when he spoke to him.

He says that what the president called the alt-left: “These were actual anarchists, radical leftists, not your daddy’s Democrats. And they talk about violence and commit violence and terror acts on a daily basis.”

HARI SREENIVASAN: The Traditional Worker Party.

All right, there was also a moment with John McCain and how he sort of referenced him as somebody that was questioning him about a critique by John McCain and kind of threw him under the bus at that moment.

And then there was this — all I can say is this sort of bizarre promo for a winery that Trump owns in Charlottesville.

Anyway, it’s fascinating insight into the president. John Yang, thanks so much.

JOHN YANG: Thank you.

HARI SREENIVASAN: We have only scratched the surface of the president’s press conference. You can watch the whole event on our Web site, pbs.org/newshour.

Army Vet Who Lost Both Legs to a Roadside Bomb Is Accepted to Harvard Medical School

A wounded Army veteran is close to achieving his dream of becoming a doctor after earning admittance to the prestigious Harvard Medical School.

Greg Galeazzi, 31, lost both of his legs and part of his right arm when a roadside bomb exploded in May 2011 during his deployment to Afghanistan. Since then, he has endured dozens of surgeries and hundreds of hours of physical therapy, which he called a “nightmare.” But through all the trauma he experienced, Galeazzi held on to his dream of one day becoming a doctor.

“Not only did I still want to practice medicine, but it strengthened my resolve to do it,” he told ABC News.

Galeazzi took 18 pre-med courses over two years at the University of Maryland, before finishing in May 2016. It was in those classes that Galeazzi met his future fiancé, Jazmine Romero, who he plans to marry next year.

Around that time, Galeazzi studied for six months to prepare for the hours-long Medical College Assessment Test, and after passing it, he sent applications to 19 medical schools on the East Coast. While he was accepted to many, Galeazzi announced in a blog post on August 5 that he had chosen to attend the top-ranking medical institution in the world, Harvard Medical School, where he will study for the next four years.

“It is tough to explain just how thrilled I was to simply be invited to interview at Harvard, let alone be accepted,” Galeazzi wrote in his announcement. “Mostly, it came as an immense relief to know that my hard work in pre-med and MCAT preparation paid off; and it reminded me just how grateful I am to have survived my injuries, and still have talents to share with the world.”

Galeazzi is still deciding what type of medicine he’ll practice, but he’s leaning toward primary care, he told ABC News. In the end, Galeazzi said, he just wants to be a good doctor.

“While I’ve overcome some pretty harrowing life challenges, medical school is going to be an entirely different struggle, so please wish me luck!” he wrote. “Then again, I recognize that this is a wonderful challenge to have, and I am happy and eager to take it on!”

Here's Why Samuel L. Jackson Is So Excited for Nick Fury to Use Both His Eyes in 'Captain Marvel'

One of the big announcements to come during a jam-packed Marvel Studios panel at this past San Diego Comic-Con was the news that Brie Larson's Captain Marvel movie (due in theaters on March 8, 2019) was going to take place in the early '90s, prior to the events of the first Iron Man movie. Princess Diana And Prince Charles Both Messed Up Their Wedding Vows

Wedding day jitters are natural, whether you have to keep your composure in front of a few dozen guests or 750,000,000 and Queen Elizabeth II

Cosmopolitan U.K. recently resurfaced a blunder made by Princess Diana as she recited her vows to Prince Charles at their 1981 wedding. Instead of calling him Charles Phillip Arthur George, she swapped his first two names, referring to him instead as Phillip Charles Arthur George ― despite both Charles and the officiant just having recited it correctly (and, you know, it being her husband’s name).

In Diana’s defense, four names is a lot to remember. And Charles didn’t get through the widely watched fairytale event clean, either: According to the BBC, he vowed to endow “thy goods,” rather than “my worldly goods.”

Neither mistake is a big deal, but they are humanizing moments we can’t help but revisit. They’re a good reminder that nerves get to everyone, and there’s no such thing as a flawless wedding day, anyway.

Plus, we never thought Diana would have something in common with the likes of Ross Gellar, who named the wrong woman in his vows, or Jessica Simpson, who reportedly said her own name instead of husband Eric Johnson’s.

Consider this a friendly reminder that even princesses of both the British and pop persuasion have made totally relatable wedding day mistakes.

Julianne Hough Shares Epic Dancing Throwback with a Young Mark Ballas — and They’re Both ‘Tan AF’

Before Julianne Hough and Mark Ballas were Dancing with the Stars pros, the longtime friends danced side-by-side in competitions as kids — and Hough has epic evidence to prove it!

Hough, who serves as a judge on the ABC reality dancing competition series and has two Mirror Ball trophies to her name, shared a throwback photo of herself alongside Ballas as adolescents on Tuesday.

In the photo, Hough and Ballas don all-white costumes — and are both are very, very tan. “#dancerbaby #pastlife #tanAF,” she captioned the Instagram picture, which also documented Ballas’ days wearing braces.

Prior to becoming a household name, Hough and her brother Derek moved in with Ballas’ family (his parent’s Shirley and Corky were family friends) as children — Julianne was just 10 and Derek 13 — to train as ballroom dance pros at the prestigious London dance school Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts.

On Nov. 25, PEOPLE exclusively reported that Ballas wed his bandmate BC Jean at a venue north of Los Angeles — and tapped Derek to be his best man.

After watching his best friend say “I do,” Hough took to Instagram to pen a congratulatory message in honor of the happy couple.

“Such an honor to be the best man at my brothers wedding. Witnessing their love be sealed under a beautiful Oak tree in front of family friends was such a special moment. Like the tree May you Stand together tall and proud,” he captioned the image of the newlywed pair. “May you always Go out on a limb for one another. To Stay grounded and dig your roots in deep so that you may weather any storm . And always continue to grow, stronger and higher reaching towards the heavens. And to always enjoy the view. Love you two.”

10 Fall Must-Haves You AND Your Daughter Both Need

1. Uggs. Yes, they are cliche and some say not the prettiest, BUT they are definitely comfy and can be thrown on with jeans, leggings and even skirts. There is no doubt they keep you warm and are durable. I have been wearing Uggs for many years before they became a trend and each season, I love them more. My daughter has also become a fan and has several pairs, including an adorable pink sequin pair. But ladies, beware of the cute fad; sequined Uggs only look good when you’re under a certain age 🙂

2. A North Face fleece. Yes, yes, it’s also trendy and cliche, but again, it’s warm as can be, and so well made. It’s versatile because it is goes from the first sign of a chill to those really cold days that you don’t want a bulky coat on. They have come along way from the original black fleece you can now find them in tons of colors and levels of fluffiness.

3. Black leather boots. They go with everything and girls of all sizes look adorable with some leggings or a skirt and leather boots.

4. A denim jacket. They never go out of style, and you always have an outfit that needs to be topped off with a cute denim jacket. They work for girls of all ages and can go from casual to dressy with some simple accessory changes.

5. Great headbands. You can find them in a variety of stores and for a range of prices. I find that the older Gigi gets, the more of my headbands end up in her bathroom. I find that some of the ones we love at Nordstrom and Saks often end up at the outlets for more than half off the original prices. When we see them there we snap them up!

6. A well-made backpack. No matter your stage of life, a good backpack always comes in handy. Gigi, of course, uses hers for school and sports, but I use mine for travel and for all-day events that require me carrying around lots of things. Gigi is a big fan of Kipling, The North Face and LeSportsac, and so am I, but all the big name designers are in the backpack scene too, like Marc Jacobs and Michael Kors.

7. Oversized sweaters. What better to top off leggings and your Uggs then a great, cozy sweater? The chunky knits keep you warm and are easy to wear and they are always a fall staple.

8. An armful of bangles and bracelets. These are fun and a perfect accessory for your fall looks. Mix up an armful of fun bracelets. Gi and I like to mix up a ton of Alex and Ani with some other textures and styles of bracelets. You can create a variety of looks by mixing up how and what you put together.

9. Some great scarves. This look is timeless and functional. Not only does a great scarf dress up a drab outfit, but it keeps you warm on a chilly day. I found some great ones at the big name outlets like Nordstrom Rack and the Bloomingdale’s outlet for nearly half their original prices.

10. Faux fur vests and jackets and faux leather pieces. No matter if you’re young or a wee bit older, faux fur is cozy and always an adorable topper to an outfit that needs a punch. I’m a big fan of leopard, but faux fur comes in many prints, colors and styles. Faux leather pants are adorable on younger girls now and if you don’t feel young enough to pull off the leather pant, there are plenty of leggings out this season with a faux leather trim or knee patch etc that are great to wear! If you’re still not feeling it, then try a faux leather-trimmed shirt or a nice sweater with faux elbow patches. They are everywhere this season!

I know it’s easier to imagine a lot of this fashions on your tween than yourself, but all are appropriate for any age and will keep you in fall style !!
