Harper Lee’s Estate Sues Over the Broadway Version of ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’

(BIRMINGHAM, Ala.) — The estate of “To Kill a Mockingbird” author Harper Lee has filed suit over an upcoming Broadway adaptation of the novel, arguing that screenwriter Aaron Sorkin’s script wrongly alters Atticus Finch and other characters from the book.

The suit, which includes a copy of a contract signed by Lee and dated about eight months before her death in February 2016, contends Sorkin’s script violates the agreement by portraying Finch, the noble attorney who represents a black man wrongly accused of rape in “Mockingbird,” as someone else in the play.

Filed against the theater company of New York producer Scott Rudin, the complaint cites an interview with the online publication Vulture in which Sorkin was quoted as saying the small-town lawyer would evolve from a racist apologist at the start of the show to become “Atticus Finch by the end of the play.”

Such a change during a play could fit with the character evolution shown between the Pulitzer Prize-winning “Mockingbird” and Lee’s first draft of the novel, finally released in 2015 as “Go Set a Watchman.”

But the lawsuit contends the script would violate the contact by changing Finch and other characters and adding still more people who aren’t in the novel. It asks a judge to enforce a section of the agreement that states the play won’t “depart in any manner from the spirit of the Novel nor alter its characters.”

A firm that represents Rudin’s company, Rudinplay Inc., said Sorkin’s script “is a faithful adaptation of a singular novel which has been crafted well within the constraints of the signed agreement” between the producers and Lee.

The statement also took a jab at the “history of litigious behavior” of Lee’s estate, overseen by attorney Tonja Carter of Lee’s south Alabama hometown of Monroeville.

“This is, unfortunately, simply another such lawsuit, the latest of many, and we believe that it is without merit,” said the statement. “While we hope this gets resolved, if it does not, the suit will be vigorously defended.”

The play is scheduled to open in New York in December.

The suit names as its plaintiff Carter, who represented Lee during the final years of the author’s life. Carter handled Lee’s will and is listed in the lawsuit as the personal representative of Lee’s estate.

Rudinplay paid Lee $ 100,000 after she approved Sorkin as the screenwriter in November 2015, the suit said. Carter first saw a draft of the play in September, according to the lawsuit, and she later spoke with Rudin by phone to express numerous concerns about Sorkin’s script.

“Mr. Rudin assured Ms. Carter that he wanted to do the Play right and that he would make sure that the Estate would be satisfied with the final product,” the suit said.

The two talked again in February about the script, suit said, adding: “At times, the conversation was heated.” Carter sued after Rudin’s attorney wrote earlier this month saying extensive changes to the script weren’t possible, the suit said.

Sorkin has won multiple Emmys for his work on the drama series “The West Wing,” and he won an Academy Award for his screenplay of “The Social Network” in 2011.

Rudin’s credits include “Lady Bird,” which was nominated for an Academy Award as best motion picture this year, and “Fences,” which was a 2017 nominee. He won a best picture Oscar for “No Country for Old Men” in 2008.

Bob Mackie Designing Wardrobe for ‘The Cher Show’ Coming to Broadway

Bob Mackie is once again collaborating with Cher in designing costumes for “The Cher Show,” a forthcoming musical based on the singer’s life and career, which debuts with a yet-to-be-announced cast at the Oriental Theatre in Chicago on June 12 before making its way to Broadway at the Neil Simon Theatre in the fall.
For decades, Mackie has designed glitzy stage costumes and red carpet looks for the 71-year-old Grammy winner, notably the barely there black-sequined gown Cher wore in 1988 when she took home the best actress Oscar for her role in “Moonstruck.” Cher has also won two Golden Globes and an Emmy Award, but this project — which features a musical score comprised of the California native’s chart-topping hits — could land the singer her first Tony Award.
Most recently, Mackie has created Cher’s flashy onstage wardrobe for her “Cher at the Colosseum” residency at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, which ran from 2008 to 2011, and “Classic Cher,” her current residency at The Theater at MGM National Harbor, also in Vegas. For “The Cher Show,” Mackie will re-create and reimagine many of her  iconic looks from her more than 50 years in show business.

SHOPPING DEALS UPDATE:

These ‘La La Land’ Songwriters Are Also Behind Your Latest Broadway Obsession

Before a shower of Academy Awards rain down upon all those associated with  “La La Land” on Sunday, let’s take a moment to remember that two of the film’s nominees are also responsible for the biggest musical theater hit of the year.

Years before Mia and Sebastian danced among the stars, composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul were already being hailed as the heirs to Rodgers and Hammerstein. With the debut of their celebrated new musical “Dear Evan Hansen,” currently playing at the Music Box Theatre in New York City, Pasek and Paul are poised to become the premier songwriting team working today.

The two first met during their freshman year at the University of Michigan where they were both studying musical theater. Bonding over the shared embarrassment of being the two worst dancers in a ballet class, Pasek and Paul soon turned their attention to writing songs. After a transformative apprenticeship with “Avenue Q” co-creator Robert Lopez, the duo began developing an impressive resume filled with musical adaptations of movies like “Dogfight” and “A Christmas Story.”

But it was “Dear Evan Hansen” that catapulted Pasek and Paul into the upper echelon of the musical theater community. Starring Ben Platt of “Pitch Perfect” as the anxious teenage depressive boy next door, “Dear Evan Hansen” has all the trappings of a hit modern musical. After a classmate he barely knew commits suicide, high schooler Evan (Platt) inserts himself into the lives of the deceased’s family, as he struggles with his own demons and self-confidence. The irresistibly catchy ballads pair well with the story of a teenager grappling with his place in the world, as big themes of love and loss are boiled down to a fiercely relatable level.

As the “Dear Evan Hansen” team was preparing for the show’s Broadway debut, the two already had their eye on another project: Damien Chazelle’s “La La Land.” In a pitch to the director, Pasek and Paul wrote the proposed lyrics for the song “City of Stars,” which garnered the duo a Golden Globe award earlier this year and is nominated for an Academy Award. Chazelle was immediately impressed, describing the duo as a “goldmine,” and the rest is award show history.

Although “La La Land” and “Dear Evan Hansen” have little in common thematically ― one is consumed by nostalgia, while the other is decidedly forward-thinking ― in Pasek and Paul’s eyes, the two productions do share a connection.

Speaking with The New York Times in November, Pasek said, “I think we’re attracted to material that’s hopeful and messy, and in that mess, there’s an attempt at getting at truth.”

Get to know Pasek and Paul a little better in the interview below.

Kelli O’Hara Receives “Our Leading Lady” Award for 15 Years On Broadway (VIDEO)

2015-06-12-1434133235-5861471-KelliSteve2.jpg

By Steve Schonberg; Video Producer: Meredith Ganzman

SCROLL DOWN TO WATCH THE INTERVIEW AND SEE KELLI RECEIVE THE “OUR LEADING LADY” AWARD!

On Sunday, June 7, famed Broadway actress and fan favorite, Kelli O’Hara (who I profiled here, last year) was finally recognized by the Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing for her remarkable contributions to the stage, taking home her very first TONY Award following a total of six nominations over several years.

In the weeks leading up, fans took to social media with a fervor, debating who exactly should win for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical. Many were in “Camp Kristin” for Chenoweth’s outstanding performance as Lily Garland in the Roundabout Theatre Company’s revival of On The 20th Century. Others rooted for theater legend Chita Rivera and her performance as Claire Zachanassian in Kander and Ebb’s final musical, The Visit (which Rivera has said will likely be her final role on Broadway).

However, the support for O’Hara was fierce, and her fans were ultimately vindicated on TONY night as she received the award for her stunning and complex performance as Anna Leonowens in the Lincoln Center revival of The King and I.

Weeks before the TONY Awards, our team at Center On The Aisle (#COTA – the website I run in addition to contributing here on The Huffington Post) was also split, but peace came by acknowledging exactly what this incredible recognition represents. All three of these women were frontrunners, and deserved to win for different reasons. However, if the TONY Awards have a weakness, it’s that other than its Lifetime Achievement awards, they celebrate only a single performance–not the performer’s body of work and total contribution to the art form.

Realizing this, our team did a little research and found out that this year did not just bring Kelli her sixth nomination, her performance in The King and I marked a total of 15 years on Broadway, and her 10th Broadway show.

To acknowledge this, the #COTA team (with the help of a special celebrity guest included in the video below!) decided to take matters into our own hands and recognize Kelli O’Hara for all of these incredible performances (whether she won the TONY Award or not), which collectively have made her one of the most recognizable and talented actresses on stage today.

Check out the video below to see me present Kelli with Center On The Aisle’s first ever award, titled “Our Leading Lady.”
