Worried About Paying for Summer Camp? Try This Fun, Affordable Alternative

The end of the school year brings joy to children but dread to working parents left to arrange — and pay for — child care over the summer.

Summer camp doesn’t come cheap. Parents can end up doling out thousands of dollars to occupy their children’s time while school is out.

However, some families find a financial break in organizing their own summer camp co-operatives.

In a cooperative, or co-op, a group of parents collectively provide child care for their children over the summer. As Care.com puts it, parents will generally take turns watching each other’s children, supervising activities similar to what kids might experience at traditional summer camps.

This informal arrangement keeps the summer fun without the summer-camp prices.

Families can customize their co-op to fit whatever works best for them. Some groups need only a week or two of camp, while others need the camp to last all summer. Some parents will restrict the co-op to close friends or family members, while others are open to setting up an arrangement with neighbors or co-workers they know only casually.

There’s no one-size-fits-all plan for forming a summer camp co-op. Here’s how one set of parents made it work for them.

Taking Summer Camp Into Their Own Hands

About six years ago, a group of friends and neighbors in Rockland County, New York, decided to develop their own summer-camp co-op.

“We found ourselves looking at the summer — 12 or 13 weeks of no school — and the cost of camp being unaffordable for most of us for that length of time,” said Vicki Larson, one of the parents who organized the camp.

Her daughter was 5 when the group started the first year of the co-op in 2012. They continued the camp for three summers, ending in 2014.

Larson said the original idea was to get about a dozen families to participate, alternating houses each week. The host parents would have taken a week off work to lead the camp. But that wasn’t ideal for everybody, so instead they ended up hiring their own camp counselors: parents, college students and teachers on summer break.

Larson said parents took turns hosting the camp in their homes, and the kids also spent time in neighborhood parks and at other local venues. Like a traditional summer camp, the children spent time doing arts and crafts, playing outside and exploring nature.

“One week, they would go to the pool every day,” said Adam Gorlovitzki, another parent organizer whose children were 4 and 5 that first summer. “One week they would go mountain hiking.”

Most of the children attended the same school, although some were friends who just lived in the same area. They ranged from preschoolers to early elementary school students.

Gorlovitzki said it was great for the kids, because they already had friends in the camp, and favorable for the parents because they got to select the teachers and could weigh in on camp activities.

Summertime Savings

Besides getting to control how your summer camp is run, one huge benefit of setting up a co-op is the financial savings.

Larson recalled parents paying about $ 225 a week, which was significantly cheaper than what some traditional summer camps were charging back then.

“On average at that time, it was easily like $ 500 a week that camps would charge you,” said Leslie Laboriel, another of the camp’s organizers, whose son turned 4 that first summer. “So we cut the costs in half.”

The money they collected went to pay the teachers and cover the cost of food and supplies. The parents handling the administrative duties worked as unpaid volunteers.

“There’s no overhead here, there’s no insurance, so it cut a lot of the costs,” Gorlovitzki said.

Laboriel said the host families paid little to no camp fees when the group was using their homes. Parents would pay for each week of camp via online banking to make the process stress free.

“It allowed them to not to have to worry about putting a check in the mail or remembering that they needed to drop a check off,” Laboriel said. “And then we didn’t have to worry about dealing with constantly making deposits at the bank. It worked out well and was nice and convenient for all of us.”

Happy Campers

Though the summer camp co-op disbanded after three years as the kids got a bit older and the group started growing larger than initially anticipated, Larson, Gorlovitzki and Laboriel all said they’d recommend this type of summer setup to other parents.

“It was a huge help,” Larson said, referring to the financial benefit of organizing the camp with her friends. “And it was great for the kids. They loved it.”

For parents considering starting a summer camp co-op of their own, she says to put a lot of thought into the locations where the camp will be held. The places should be child-friendly, the hosts must be comfortable opening up their homes and there needs to be enough space to accommodate all the children, Larson said.

“Kids need a variety of activities during the day, so you want to make sure the space lends itself to [that],” she said.

“It makes sense to not commit to one location if it’s someone’s home because you really are kind of taking over their space,” Laboriel added. “It’s nice to be able to move [the camp] around a little bit to give [host parents] the opportunity to have their homes back.”

Larson said it’s important to get all the parents in the group to sign documents absolving the host family and teacher of liability should any incidents arise.

Definitely have parents sign a waiver,” she said. “It’s not ironclad, but it gives you a little sense of security that if something happens, you’re not going to get sued.”

Setting up a summer camp co-op involves advance planning. Larson suggests parents identify who is comfortable with doing the administrative tasks, organizing the spreadsheets and figuring out the rates.

In planning sessions, organizers should think about how they’d like to structure the camp, what types of activities they want the kids to do, who will handle communicating with all the parents and how they’d like to deal with finances without making it cumbersome, Laboriel recommends.

Gorlovitzki’s advice for those who are reluctant to create a summer camp co-op is to start small with a few families and build from there.

“Don’t be afraid. Just go with it,” he said. “Things may not be perfect the first day, but you learn as you go.”

Watch Amber Portwood Yell at Matt Baier on Day 1 of ‘Marriage Boot Camp’

That didn’t take long! Amber Portwood, who is now expecting a baby with boyfriend Andrew Glennon, first tried to make her relationship with Matt Baier work on the upcoming season of Marriage Boot Camp: Reality Stars Family Edition.

In an exclusive sneak peek of the Friday, March 9, premiere, the Teen Mom OG star, 27, yells at Matt in front of the other celebs, saying that she always “tells the f—king truth” when rehashing what happened in their relationship.

“There’s more to the story. You’re giving headlines without actually giving the story,” Matt, 47, says. “When you hear the whole story, there’s a lot more to it than what’s on the surface.”

Brandi Glanville nods, seemingly agreeing with Matt.

“You’re trying to act like everything that I’ve been saying is bulls—t when everything that I’m saying is real … It’s his turn to prove to me that he’s ready to be in a real relationship with a real f—king woman. Listen, I’m telling you the truth,” she says.

Amber’s mother, Tonya, is also part of the show, hoping to patch up her relationship with her daughter.

“I do not think Matt’s an honest guy. He likes to blame Amber for everything and I just wish that Matt was out of the picture,” Tonya, who appears on Teen Mom OG from time to time, says in the confessional.

Brandi, who’s appearing this season with her father, definitely butts head with Amber. “She came for me. I said she was a narcissist and she lunged at me,” Glanville said on Watch What Happens Live on Tuesday, March 7. “Thank God for the Mob Wives! They all jumped in like, ‘Don’t let her hurt Brandi.’ I was taking off my earrings! I was going in.”

Marriage Boot Camp: Reality Stars Family Edition premiers on We TV Friday, March 9, at 9 p.m. ET.

L.A. Clippers and Kaiser Permanente Host Total Health Camp for Boys & Girls Club Keiki

HONOLULU — More than 75 keiki sprinted, jumped, dribbled and shot hoops with Los Angeles Clippers’ Sindarius Thornwell and Jawun Evans at the Kaiser Permanente Total Health Camp at Spalding Clubhouse recently. Sponsored by Kaiser Permanente Hawaii in partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii, the free fitness event was held to teach children about the importance of total health — caring for the body, mind and spirit.

Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii members ages 7 to 13 took turns rotating between different activity stations. Kaiser Permanente physical therapists taught students about injury prevention and warm-up exercises, health educators discussed the importance of healthy hydration and eating, and L.A. Clippers players guided participants in shooting and passing drills. Participants also received healthy snacks, mini basketballs and water bottles as a reminder to incorporate healthy habits into their lifestyle. photo of young boy dribbling a basketball

“Embracing a healthy lifestyle at a young age is critical to the physical, mental and emotional health and development of our keiki,” said Chris K. A Pussy Riot member recounts her experience in a Russian prison camp in her new memoir

‘If you hear someone talking about the humane treatment of women in Russian prisons, it is a total lie’

Rex

Most of us hadn’t heard of the group Pussy Riot until February 2012. Do you remember the anti-Putanist punk rock group who burst into The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow to film a guerrilla performance of their provocative Punk Prayer? Yes, that was them.

The satirical performance was a political protest, with the three women calling on Virgin Mary to ‘be a feminist’ and ‘banish Putin.’

The short demonstration (and viral 40-second video clip) saw three of its members Yekaterina Samutsevich, Maria Alyokhina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova arrested, with the former two charged for ‘organised hooliganism’, spending two years on a Russian prison camp.

A 21-month prison sentence later, Pussy Riot are a household name, with its members going straight back into activism.

Freed Pussy Riot member Maria Alyokhina arrives at Kursk train station. Credit: Rex

Maria Alyokhina, known as Masha, served her sentence in a remote prison colony in the Urals Mountains, something that she details in her new memoir, Riot Days, which lands on book shelves today.

‘Whenever we hear “Attention!”, we have to stand up and say, “Good day!” in chorus,’ Masha recalls in Riot Days. ‘These are the rules. It is the first lesson in politeness, which I must master, because to reform is to know and fulfil the orders. Politely. So we stand up. Forty women run to their assigned spots.’

She goes on to detail every aspect of her prison sentence from the night raids and identical uniforms to the rules she had to follow.

‘Sleeping is a violation of the rules’, the 29-year-old activist explains in her book, recalling how she had fallen asleep while reading the prison regulations for three hours, something the guards responded by screaming, ‘This is not a holiday resort! This is not a health spa!’

‘“Masha,” one of the women says to me in a whisper, while we are warming tea in the kitchen. “If someone comes to visit you – you know, from Moscow – tell them,”’ the activist recalls. ‘“Don’t be silent. Tell them how we live here. You’re a political. We have rights. We may be prisoners, but we’re still people. Tell them.”’

So that’s what she’s doing.

Riot Days by Maria Alyokhina, and published by Allen Lane it out now for £16.99.

At first, I didn’t really get into the romantic prologue between Marc and the narrator. But once they got to the castle I had a blast reading it! All the hilarious twists and turns had me laughing out loud. Having to strip a piece of clothing off every time they lost the quiz was pure joy!! The hiking suntan lotion incident brought back some recent memories. I think I identified with Callum (and maybe Toby). Poor Callum had to test the machinery and showers naked in front of Douglas. Dear Mom: My Son’s Hilarious Summer Camp Letter

2014-06-07-Campphoto.jpg

Last year my 8-year-old son went to summer camp. It was the first time he had been away from home for more than a night. An hour after he left, I missed him. By the time I went to bed, I found myself wandering into his bedroom, just to feel close to him. As the days passed, I wrote to him daily. Each hour dragged as I’d wait for the mailman, hoping and praying for just one letter from him. By that point I missed him so much, I began to imagine what he might write to me. I fantasized I’d receive a letter something like this:

Dear Mom,

Thank you so much for letting me go to camp. I have learned so many cool things, like how to take a fish off the hook, tie sailing knots, and even how to groom a horse. Thanks for packing the sunscreen. I’ve been out on the lake a lot, so it has really come in handy. You sure think of everything! Since it’s been so hot, I’ve been drinking tons of water! See? I really listen to all your good advice.

The other boys here are really smart and nice. I’m making some lifelong friends I will cherish forever. We’ve had fun learning camp songs, playing cards, and catching frogs in our free time. During quiet time, I read the book you sent along. What a great selection! And just because you’re my mom, I made a special gift for you in arts and crafts!

I’m trying a lot of new foods, just like you suggested. You were right, the oatmeal at breakfast really isn’t bad when I add raisins. And don’t worry, Mom, I’ve been using all the manners you’ve taught me over the years.

We are camping under the stars tonight. I hope to see fireflies.

I love you,

W

xxoo

P.S. Tell my brothers I miss them!

Yesterday I received a letter. It’s just slightly different from what I imagined:

Ultimate Basic Training: Tips, Tricks, and Tactics for Surviving Boot Camp

Ultimate Basic Training: Tips, Tricks, and Tactics for Surviving Boot Camp

As anyone who has undergone the transition from civilian to soldier will tell you, basic training is a lot tougher and more challenging than any recruit can imagine. Michael Volkin discovered that fact soon after 9-11, when his personal vow to serve my country convinced him to enlist in the U.S. Army. As Volkin quickly discovered, he was utterly unprepared for the new world of the military, a completely different environment full of unknown exercises and acronyms, where cant eat or talk without permission. Volkin began taking notes on everything and anything with the hope that no one else would have to go through basic training like I did completely unarmed with knowledge that would have eased my transition into the military and allowed me to be more successful. During Operation Enduring/Iraqi Freedom, Volkin organized his notes, interviewed hundreds of other soldiers, and began to write. The result is The Ultimate Basic Training Guidebook, a unique and utterly indispensable guide to successfully coping with and thriving in todays military. The Ultimate Basic Training Guidebook is a comprehensive, practical, and easy-to-follow survival guide written specifically for every new or prospective recruit about to enter any branch of the armed forces. Volkins book offers step-by-step instructions and solutions, including helpful charts and graphics, for how to prepare both physically and mentally for boot camp. It includes a special eight-week fitness program specifically designed to improve your fitness test scores, specific study guides, an instructional How tochapter, a list of what to bring (and not to bring) to basic training, tips for success, and much more. The Ultimate Basic Training Guidebook was written by a soldier for men and women who want to become soldiers. No one should enter boot camp without having read this book.

Matthew Camp Discusses His Go-Go Past, His Fashion-Design Future and the Power of Smell (NSFW PHOTOS)

2014-03-14-MatthewC_3.jpg
Portrait by Daniel Jack Lyons

It’s easy to prejudge Matthew Camp. He’s a beautiful former go-go dancer with an amazing body and a cherubic face. (Read: I kind of assumed he was going to be the kind of guy who skates by on his looks.) When he walked in the door for his interview, I complimented his overcoat. He blushed, shrugged, and said he made it himself. This interaction pretty much set the tone for my afternoon with Camp. Through our conversation I learned that he’s not at all what I’d assumed. He’s kind, independent, hardworking, and gifted, a smart, fascinating guy who lives and works by his own rules. Here’s a snippet of our conversation. Enjoy!

Phillip M. Miner: Most people know you from your dancing career and are probably surprised to find out about the clothing and fragrance design. How did you get into fashion?

Matthew Camp: I’ve been making clothes for such a long time. I started before I was 20. I would make clothes for my sister’s dolls when I was a kid. I took a few classes in a community college and thought, “Wow, this is really easy.” I took a pattern-making class and a sewing class, and that was all I needed. The really interesting thing about making clothing is you learn a process that you can apply to anything. I feel like I can make anything now because I’ve learned the process of making something from scratch.

Miner: Like cologne, for example?

Camp: Exactly! I take natural and synthetic oils and mix them together using different processes to cure them to create the particular scent I want. Not a lot of people do it; it’s kind of a lost art. When I create a scent, I don’t follow many of the rules that people use. There are lots of books about what you’re supposed to do and the scents you’re supposed to use; I don’t really follow that. For me, smell is connected to memory and emotion. If I smell something and it conjures some sort of memory for emotion, I’ll find another scent that brings up the same memory. After I play around with it, I end up with a fragrance that tells a story. My newest fragrance, “8.5,” is made of smells that reminds me of go-go dancing. I used to wear cocoa butter all the time to grease myself up, so that’s in there. Leather and cigarettes and a bunch of other things that reminded me of those nights also went into “8.5.” To me, it smells like going and being out at a big gay bar. I think that’s why it resonates with gay men.

Miner: I have to ask: Does “8.5” mean what we assume it means?

Camp: It is not referring to my genitalia. I’m a happy 7.5. [Laughs.] Clearly the name is meant to be suggestive, but I chose “8.5” because it suggested a few things. The Fellini film is one of my favorite films; it’s raw and sexual, and it reminds of the scent.

Miner: Tell me a bit about your dancing.

Camp: I danced forever. I started at the club 20 VIP, which is a strip club with lap dances and everything. I learned so much at that job. I learned how to socially manipulate people into giving me money, which was very useful when I started go-go dancing — and the rest of my career too, I guess. [Laughs.] When I go-go danced, I actually danced. I miss performing. I don’t necessarily miss being in my underwear all the time, but I miss being on a stage. It’s not necessarily the attention I miss; it’s the performing. When I was dancing at Boy Box at G Lounge, I would do these striptease numbers. One night I had a diaper on that was filled with chocolate pudding. I danced around like a baby, took the diaper off, then had a friend lick the pudding out of my ass. They asked me not to do that performance again. I said, “Why not?! This shit is amazing!” [Laughs.] People had the best reactions. Stuff like that was really fun to do.

Miner: I can see why you did so well at go-go dancing. Your body is ridiculous. There are a bunch of nasty things said and written about gay guys who go to the gym frequently. Do you have any comment?

Camp: I can’t speak for an entire group of people, but [going to the gym] keeps me sane. I like to work out because it makes me feel good. My body actually hurts if I go more than four days without working out. I need to go and work out. I’m addicted to the chemicals my body produces when I work out. So I guess I don’t fucking care what people think. [Laughs.] But seriously, it keeps me sane. I’m probably a little agoraphobic; I won’t leave my house for much, usually just work or the gym or grocery shopping. So for me, going to the gym gives me the opportunity to leave my house and do something that feels good. It gives me the opportunity to be social without drinking or stuff like that. I’m trying to streamline as much as I can so it works for me.

Miner: Do you bring the same streamlining philosophy to your work?

Camp: Definitely. I’ve had a few people tell me I should start mass-producing my stuff. I’m not against that, but right now that’s not how I measure success. [Mass production] would unnecessarily complicate my work, because I’d end up trying to fulfill too many people’s desires. The way I work now, I have full control. My designs are mine. I look at my leather pieces as one-of-a-kind pieces of art that I make for one person. My typical client is a collector and the type of person who wears a leather jacket all the time; it’s part of their lifestyle. We collaborate, and the end product is totally unique.

Miner: My job is to make sure we talk about gay stuff at some point. Do you think your need to control your leather pieces comes from being gay?

Camp: I don’t know. When I was reading Stitching a Revolution, I realized gay people used to be total outlaws. They were outsiders and forced to create their own community that included really-fucking-cool cultural phenomena like drag queens. You don’t see that as much now. A lot of gay culture is becoming homogenized and acceptable, which isn’t a good or a bad thing. (I don’t believe in the ideas of “good” or “bad.”) I see both sides. We’re losing that outlaw thing, but it does make it easier for people to come out and also maybe makes [winning] equality easier. I guess I’m trying to say: Fuck it! Just be yourself. Who cares if you’re gay or straight? You don’t need someone else’s approval to do what you want. Do what makes you happy and healthy. It’s about self-improvement.

Kristen Stewart’s ‘Camp X-Ray’ And Three Other Movies From The First 24 Hours Of Sundance

The first 24 hours of the Sundance Film Festival are now complete. The weather in Park City, Utah has been surprisingly pleasant (which I am sure will change drastically because of the sentence I just wrote). Regardless, as in years past, I’ll be providing a daily synopsis of all of the movies that I’ve seen at the festival.

This first installment includes the current talk of the festival so far, “Whiplash,” the surprise hit starring Miles Teller; Kristen Stewart’s Guantanamo Bay drama, “Camp X-Ray”; and Aaron Paul’s first film post-“Breaking Bad,” “Hellion.”

“Whiplash”

whiplash

Sundance isn’t exactly known for showing, let’s say, their better films on the first night of the festival. I think this may be the reason that not many people saw “Whiplash” coming. Plus, the synopsis about a college student, Andrew (Miles Teller), trying out for his school’s jazz band doesn’t sound, on the surface, like something oozing with excitement. Boy, were those assumptions wrong. The key here is that his music professor, Terence Fletcher (J.K. Simmons), isn’t the “tough love, but has a heart of gold” type of guy. For lack of a better term, he’s an asshole. He casually drops homophobic slurs while berating his students and he’s not afraid of physical abuse. As an audience, we hate this guy. But, we don’t doubt Fetcher’s talent and Fletcher doesn’t doubt Andrew’s talent — even though these two despise each other. Which, for the viewer, creates an electric relationship to observe. (And one of the best drum solos I’ve ever seen on screen.)

“Camp X-Ray”

camp xray

Even though it doesn’t completely work, this was a good career choice for Kristen Stewart. And she’s fine as Amy Cole, a private stationed at Guantanamo Bay whose duty it is to keep the detainees – never “prisoners” – alive. There’s certainly an interesting message in this film concerning the ethics of Guantanamo Bay, but, as a movie, there’s a lot of mundane scenes of soldiers peering into cell windows. It’s a movie about people in a remote prison who we know aren’t going anywhere anytime soon, which limits where the story can really go. (Though, it does flirt with a borderline sexual assault at an off-duty party. This does not make the movie any better.) There’s a level of appreciation here that Stewart tried something completely different, but the movie itself doesn’t have any room to breathe.

“Hellion”

hellion

Boy, it’s nice to watch Aaron Paul play someone who is not Jesse Pinkman. And it’s kind of obvious on-screen that Paul is himself relishing this opportunity. (Note: I spoke to Paul after the premiere for an interview that will also publish this weekend.) Paul plays Hollis, a widower alcoholic trying to raise his two young sons, the older of which, Jacob (Josh Wiggins) is a hellion and seems to find himself in trouble with the law on a regular basis. The film takes a really odd narrative choice in the final act, but that doesn’t overshadow the great performances by both Paul and newcomer Josh Wiggins.

“A Most Wanted Man”

a most wanted man

From director Anton Corbijn — the man who brought you “The American” (a movie that most people don’t like very much) – comes another slow burn, “A Most Wanted Man.” Set in Hamburg, Germany — a hotbed of sorts for terrorist activities — we follow German spy Gunther Bachman (Philip Seymour Hoffman), as he attempts to locate a suspected terrorist, while trying to prevent his own government and the American government from overeacting. Look, the story here is interesting, but execution is dull. I actually enjoyed the slow-paced “The American,” because the tone was slow. It felt like the movie was supposed to take its time. Here, there’s so much going on and so many interesting characters, I was on the edge of my seat for the first half of the movie waiting for something to happen – because it feels like something should happen. Then I just eventually gave up. Yet, I still found the movie strangely compelling. Look, no one ever said that the spy game was exciting.
