Case study: Child’s lobectomy reveals brain’s ability to reorganize its visual system

Researchers report on three years of behavioral and brain imaging tests on a nearly seven year-old boy — ‘UD’ — who had a third of the right hemisphere of his brain removed in an attempt to control seizures. Even though the procedure left UD unable to see the left side, the team found that his brain’s left hemisphere eventually compensated for visual tasks such as recognizing faces and objects.

Feds Reopen the Emmett Till Murder Case Citing ‘New Information’

The U.S. Department of Justice is reopening the murder case of Emmett Till 63 years after the 14-year-old African American teen was brutally murdered for allegedly whistling at a white woman in Mississippi. Federal officials announced Thursday that it launched an investigation into the case based on “new information” that it received about Till’s 1955 kidnapping, torture, and murder.

News that the DOJ was reopening Till’s case was first reported by the Associated Press after the Justice Department sent a report to Congress in March under the Emmett Till Unsolved Civil Rights Crimes Reauthorization Act of 2016, a bill authorized by President Barack Obama that grants feds with the ability to investigate unsolved civil rights murders before 1970.

While details about the new developments have not been disclosed, new revelations about Till’s death were published in the 2017 book The Blood of Emmett Till by historian Timothy B. Tyson.

Till was a native of Chicago visiting relatives in Money, Mississippi, when he was accused of making sexual advances toward Carolyn Donham, 21, at a grocery store. Her then-husband, Roy Bryant, and his half-brother J.W. Milam were charged with killing Till but were acquitted by an all-white jury. Bryant and Milam later admitted to a reporter the next year that they beat and shot the teen before dumping his body in the Tallahatchie River. They were not retried due to double jeopardy laws.

Donham, who was known as Carolyn Bryant at the time, also admitted that she fabricated the story about Till in The Blood of Emmett Till. “Nothing that boy did could ever justify what happened to him,” the book quotes her as saying. She currently lives in Raleigh, North Carolina, and will turn 84 this month.

Rep. Bobby L. Rush, a Democratic congressman who urged Attorney General Jeff Sessions to reopen the case last year, released a statement Thursday applauding the announcement.

I am glad to see the federal government following through on this request. This case is not only critically important for the role it played in sparking the Civil Rights movement, but so that Emmett and his family receive the justice that is owed to them. It is vital that everyone — both victims and perpetrators — knows that heinous crimes of this nature will never go unpunished.

He added, Even today, the crime that he was a victim of, lynching, is still not illegal under federal law

Although justice was never served, Till’s vicious killing was a pivotal catalyst in the launch of the civil rights movement. Till’s cousin told USA TODAY that her family is “extremely pleased” the DOJ has reopened the investigation into his death. “We want the process to work and we want justice to prevail for Emmett. This cannot just be forgotten.”

The Shocking Backstreet Boys Rape Case That the Media Keeps Ignoring

Nicholas Hunt/Getty

Over two decades later, the Backstreet Boys keep coming back.

For nostalgia-seekers, the perennially-second-best boy band’s upcoming tour might hold some appeal. With the relaxed pace of men celebrating their twenties’ 25th birthday, the band has been creeping into the zeitgeist with new music and televised performances. In May, they released the single “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart,” their first in five years, teasing an upcoming album. They went on to perform the track at the CMT Music Awards, where they announced plans for an upcoming world tour. They also appeared on The Tonight Show, performing a rendition of “I Want It That Way” for Jimmy Fallon’s “Classroom Instruments” series.

With nine studio albums, a Las Vegas residency and countless tours under their belt, the Backstreet Boys have worked pretty consistently since their late-‘90s superstardom. But their latest efforts follow sexual-assault accusations made against Nick Carter, the breakout star of the band, which are currently the subject of an ongoing police investigation. And Carter’s alleged victim, Melissa Schuman, refuses to stop calling out her abuser and the complicity of those facilitating his comeback.

Cyntoia Brown Case: Life Sentence Headed To Federal Appeals Court

(Lacy Atkins/The Tennessean via AP, Pool)

CINCINNATI (AP) — Federal appeals judges said Thursday they’re considering asking the Tennessee Supreme Court to clarify whether a woman serving a life sentence for killing a man when she was 16 can ever gain parole.

The three-judge 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals panel heard arguments Thursday in the case of Cyntoia Brown, who has attracted celebrity support.

Attorney Mark Pickrell said Tennessee’s laws “are completely ambiguous” on parole eligibility and that her sentence is unconstitutionally excessive. John Bledsoe of the Tennessee attorney general’s office disagreed, saying she has the possibility for parole after serving 51 years.

The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled against mandatory life-without-parole sentences for juveniles, but Tennessee has argued successfully in lower courts that Brown will have a chance for parole.

“The law is not unclear,” Bledsoe said.

Brown, now 30, would be 68 after serving 51 years. Pickrell said she could be told decades from now that the state considers her ineligible for parole if the appeals court lets stand now what he says is an unconstitutional sentence.

“That kind of miscarriage of justice should not be on the table,” Pickrell said.

Judge Amul Thapar said the appeals court could certify the question of her eligibility for Tennessee’s high court to answer before ruling. The judges didn’t say how soon they will act. The 6th Circuit hears appeals cases from Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee.

There was no discussion during the oral arguments on the other part of Brown’s appeal: Her attorneys contend she lacked the mental state to be culpable in the 2004 slaying, impaired by her mother’s alcohol use while she was in the womb.

Her attorneys say Brown has turned her life around. They have a request for clemency pending before Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam.

Celebrities, including Kim Kardashian and singer Rihanna, are part of a social media campaign to get Brown released.

Advocates say she was a teen sex trafficking victim who received an extremely harsh sentence. Police have said she shot real estate agent Johnny Allen, 43, in the back of the head at close range after bringing a loaded gun to rob him.

ENTERTAINMENT UPDATE:

What the New Ruling Means in the Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie Custody Case

The custody battle between Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie just heated up, with a judge ordering new restrictions for  Jolie’s involvement in Pitt’s interaction with their six children.

According to court documents obtained by PEOPLE, Jolie could be in danger of losing primary custody of the children if she doesn’t take steps to improve their relationship with their father. A judge in the couple’s ongoing divorce case said in the documents that “it is critical that each of children have a healthy and strong relationship with their father and mother,” and that Jolie must allow Pitt to maintain and repair that.

Family law attorney David Glass, who is not associated with the case, tells PEOPLE that it “is extremely rare” to see a court intervene in this way, though they typically do so after extensive evaluation and to prevent children from being alienated from one parent.

“It looks like what this judge was weighing was the difference between estrangement and alienation,” says Glass, who has not had access to the court documents. “The difference there is, estrangement is when children aren’t connected to one of the parents, mainly because of something that parent did. So a hypothetical, if dad screams and yells at the kids and doesn’t treat them nicely, the kids stop wanting to see dad, that’s estrangement. An alienation refers to where children have been told by the other parent that the parent they’re not seeing is bad, or doesn’t like them, or doesn’t care about them. Just talking badly about the other parent and the kids start to internalize what the other parent is telling them. In alienation cases, kids will typically just repeat words that are beyond their years, or they will repeat reasons that they don’t possibly have access to the information.”

He adds: “It’s a rare case where the court will find that someone alienated the kids. It takes a lot to move the court past estrangement into alienation, but once it’s determined that one parent is alienating the kids, the court has no choice but to jump in and make pretty strong orders right away.”

The judge also outlined specific steps Jolie should take to aid Pitt’s access to and relationship with the children, including a detailed summer visitation schedule, and easy phone access between Pitt and each of the kids, without monitoring or interference from their mom. Glass says that the goal of the new guidelines is to “try to figure out what’s in the children’s best interest.”

“The schedule worked out by the court is the typical post-alienation reunification schedule,” he says. “You see them a couple hours a day and that starts leading to full days and eventually if things go well it leads to overnights, so you’re slowly acclimating the kids to the parent who’s been cut out of the kids lives.”

According to the court documents, the kids have to continue to see their therapist with Pitt, which Glass says is a positive step.

“That’s the first good news, that the kids are in therapy and that dad is somehow involved in the therapy. That’s where the kids can work out whatever issues they have. It’s that continuing contact with dad … all those little pieces that eventually lead to some sort of reunification with their dad.”

Reps for both Jolie, 43, and Pitt, 54, have not yet responded to a request for comment. Jolie filed for divorce from Pitt on September 19, 2016. The have six children: Maddox, 16, Pax, 14, Zahara, 13, Shiloh, 12, and 9-year old twins Vivienne and Knox.

Michael Smerconish Makes the Case for Bold Moderation

Photo Illustration by The Daily Beast

In our polarized world of “cable carnival shoutfest” and intransigent partisanship, Michael Smerconish is an increasingly exotic and refreshing voice. A prominent Sirius XM radio and CNN television host, he has been a regular contributor to the Daily News from November 2001 until 2007 and after that, a Sunday Philadelphia Inquirer newspaper columnist until the present day. Clowns to the Left of Me, Jokers to the Right is Smerconish’s seventh book. It brings together a representative selection from the 1,047 columns he has written over the past 17 years that cover politics, profiles, life, and miscellanea.

A good number of these columns have stood the test of time. A few others Smerconish probably wishes he had never written. The columns he has included in this book are reprinted here as they appeared in the original form, with an afterword from the author that provides, in his own words, “an update on facts and feelings.” They make for enjoyable reading and remind us that journalism properly practiced requires a good deal of nerve, honesty, and insight, along with openness to dialogue and the determination not to live in a bubble.

Smerconish’s columns offer a representative slice of 21st century American life with all its ups and down, real heroes, and controversial characters. He writes with plain words and communicates his feelings in a straightforward manner. We get to meet here not only the likes of David Duke and Rush Limbaugh but also the sober voices of Arlen Specter, Tim Russert, and Jack Kemp. An inveterate admirer of Ronald Reagan, who he met in his youth, Smerconish does not shy away from applauding, when necessary, the rhetorical skills of President Obama. Nor does he avoid taking to task one of the politicians he respects, Senator John McCain, for failing to put forth an inspiring vision for the country in 2008.

Florida Mom Missing Since Mother’s Day Is Presumed Dead — and a Suspect Is Arrested in the Case

Florida police have arrested a woman in connection with the disappearance of a mom-of-three who didn’t pick up her children on Mother’s Day and hasn’t been seen since.

At a news conference on Tuesday afternoon, Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper said investigators arrested 50-year-old Kimberly Kessler — who authorities allege was the last person to see 34-year-old Joleen Jensen Cummings alive, according to local TV station WJXT.

Kessler, a co-worker at Tangles Hair Salon with Cummings, is charged with grand theft auto, First Coast News reports. She is also a suspect in Cummings’ disappearance, authorities said Tuesday.

She is being held in lieu of $ 500,000 bond.

Leeper said investigators have evidence to suggest that Cummings is dead but would not release it at this time.

Cummings was last seen leaving her job at Tangles in Fernandina Beach at 5 p.m. on May 12. She was supposed to meet up with her ex-husband in Hilliard on Mother’s Day to pick up her kids but she never showed up. Her mother, Anne Johnson, reported her missing on May 14.

Her beige 2006 Ford Expedition was discovered May 15 in the parking lot of a Home Depot near the salon in Yulee.

That same day, police went to the salon to speak with Kessler, but she didn’t show up to work from that point forward — and the address she had given to her boss was fake, police allege.

• Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Click here to get breaking crime news, ongoing trial coverage and details of intriguing unsolved cases in the True Crime Newsletter.

Later, investigators discovered surveillance video from 1:17 a.m. on May 13 that showed Kessler, who worked at the salon that day and had been employed there for about one month, parking Cummings’ SUV.

Police found Kessler, who went by the alias Jennifer Sybert, at a truck stop on May 16, First Coast News reports.

Police said Kessler is from Pennsylvania and had been using a fake social security number.

On Sunday, Cummings’ mother Anne Johnson posted an emotional message to Facebook about her missing daughter. “When parents shed tears about their children, I believe with all my heart that God hears those prayers of lament, and all of us can agree that when our kids hurt and go through difficulties that we as a parent shed tears,”

“Today is the 7th day we are without my daughter,” she continued. “Today is 7 days her children are without their mother. Today is 7 days that her brother and sister are without their sister. Today is 7 days that her close friends are without their friend. Let’s bring Joleen home!”

It was not immediately clear if Kessler has retained an attorney.

After years of treatment that didn’t help, she went to another doctor who told her she didn’t really have arthritis. Zapata was not the only patient to be misdiagnosed, according to a joint federal and local investigation. The task force investigating Zamora-Quezada announced Monday that he was being indicted in a $ 240 million medical fraud case. In Case You Missed it, Wendy’s Dropped A Mixtape Roasting McDonald’s and Burger King

Last month, Wendy’s changed the game by releasing a five-track mixtape that ruthlessly takes aim at its two biggest haters, McDonald’s and Burger King. On the project, which is titled “We Beefin’,” the restaurant’s famous red-head mascot, aka “Queen Wendy,” proclaims itself as “fast food’s first lady” over trap-style beats. The clever marketing ploy also features album artwork of the chain’s signature square burger patty.

“Rest in Grease,” one of the most popular songs on the EP, takes direct shots at McDonald’s with the lyrics: “You’re No. 1?That’s a joke/Why your ice cream machine always broke?/Why your drive-through always slow?/Why your innovation just can’t grow?”

Wendy’s took it a step further by dedicating an entire song bashing its burger rival’s mascot Ronald McDonald called “Clownin’.” On the track, the artist raps, “You hide from funk / That’s prolly why you go paint your face / My meals are great, people lining up like every day / Leave you in shame, make you run back to Cirque du Soleil / That’s cold game / But what you expect from tryna play / Won’t say no names but you a clown / Get it, OK?”

Another track, titled “Holding It Down,” takes jabs at Burger King with lyrics: “The problem is you didn’t recognize I give no clucks / So wrap it up, turn these chickens to rubber ducks / And BK, don’t think that you got away / You copied my old menu and put it out on replay.”

Since its release on March, 23, the innovative branding strategy has been well-received by social media users. Here’s why:

1. It’s creative

The diss EP goes beyond traditional marketing avenues and gimmicks. Rather than saturating consumers with more advertisements, the project allows Wendy’s to reach its audience through a new medium that gives the company an edge over the competition.

2. It speaks to millennials

The lyrics on “We Beefin’?” speaks the language of young people by using trendy terminology and capitalizing off the entertainment value of rap battle beefs. Plus, it meets the demographic in spaces that they frequent: Spotify, Apple Music, and Google Play.

3. It capitalizes on the power of hip-hop as a marketing tool

The mixtape taps into hip-hop’s global multibillion-dollar market, which is often used—and misused—by mainstream corporations. Back in the ’90s, for instance, Sprite collaborated with rappers like Grand Puba and Large Professor for its iconic “Obey Your Thirst” campaign. Amazon also recently collaborated with rap’s reigning queen, Cardi B, to push its brand.

4. It caters to the growing black buy power

According to a 2015 Nielsen study, African American households earning at least $ 75,000 are growing rapidly, while black Americans make up about 20% of the U.S. population. Black buying power cannot be neglected and denied. Rather, it’s a smart move for companies to tap into this market. Pepsi and Doritos, for instance, featured high-profile black entertainers in a series of Super Bowl ads in an effort to reach the audience.

5. It’s on brand

The Wendy’s Twitter account is notorious for its sassy and snarky clapbacks at haters and for trolling competitors. “We Beefin’?” brilliantly personifies the account’s witty personality as a rap savage.

Cosby Retrial Jury Won’t Hear Why ex-DA Dropped Case In 2005

Bill Cosby

NORRISTOWN, Pa. (AP) — Jurors in Bill Cosby’s sex assault retrial won’t hear why the case was initially dropped four weeks after his accuser came forward in 2005.
Judge Steven O’Neill sided with prosecutors Friday in ruling that ex-District Attorney Bruce Castor’s opinions are irrelevant.

O’Neill also barred mention of a 2015 election that Castor lost to current DA Kevin Steele, whose ads criticized him for not charging Cosby.

Opening statements in Cosby’s retrial start Monday.

Castor wrote in a 2005 press release that the case was too flawed and that both Cosby and accuser Andrea Constand could be portrayed “in a less than flattering light.”

His successors reopened it in 2015 after Cosby’s decade-old testimony from Constand’s civil suit was unsealed.

The Associated Press does not typically identify people who say they are victims of sexual assault unless they grant permission, which Constand has done.

Maryland Redistricting Case Comes Before Supreme Court

Supreme Court

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court is taking up its second big partisan redistricting case of the term amid signs the justices could place limits on drawing maps for political gain.

The justices are hearing arguments Wednesday in an appeal filed by Republicans in Maryland. They complain that Democrats who controlled the state government in 2011 drew a congressional district for the express purpose of ousting the Republican incumbent and replacing him with a Democrat.

In Wisconsin, Democrats are challenging legislative districts drawn by Republicans statewide. Those districts gave Republicans a huge majority in a state that otherwise is closely divided between the parties.

The Supreme Court has never struck down districts for being too partisan.

A decision in favor of opponents of partisan gerrymandering could cut into the political power of the dominant party in states in which one party controls the state government.

The court is expected to issue decisions in both cases by late June.

Maryland’s 6th Congressional District had been centered in rural, Republican-leaning northwestern Maryland and had elected a Republican to Congress for 20 years. Incumbent Rep. Roscoe Bartlett won re-election in 2010 by 28 percentage points.

But in the 2011 redistricting, Democrats altered the district to take in some Democratic suburbs of Washington, D.C. The new district had 62,000 fewer Republicans and 33,000 more Democrats. Bartlett lost the 2012 election by 21 percentage points.

Republican voters who sued over the changes said the state violated their First Amendment rights.

Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh, a Democrat, is defending the district as competitive for both parties. Frosh said the district has elected a moderate Democrat, and in 2014, a friendlier year for Republican candidates, the victory margin of Democratic Rep. John Delaney dropped to less than 2 percentage points, though it rose again in 2016.

Republican Gov. Larry Hogan is siding with the voters who sued, saying partisan gerrymandering results “in real and concrete harms to our democratic republic.” Hogan has proposed a nonpartisan redistricting commission.

Over the past 16 months, courts struck down political districting plans drawn by Republicans in North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Federal judges threw out a state legislative map in Wisconsin and a congressional plan in North Carolina. In Pennsylvania, the state Supreme Court invalidated the state’s congressional districts and replaced them with a court-drawn plan.

The Supreme Court has put the drawing of new maps on hold in North Carolina and Wisconsin, but refused to block the Pennsylvania court’s adoption of revised congressional districts for this year’s elections.

Who was Linda Brown? The woman at the center of the Brown v. Board of Education case helped change history

Who was Linda Brown? The woman at the center of the Brown v. Board of Education case helped change history

Who was Linda Brown? The woman at the center of the Brown v. Board of Education case helped change history

In the current movement for gun control, there is a special focus on young people who are fighting for their rights and yearning for schools to become safe spaces. These young people’s desires to facilitate changes on their campuses echo another era that transformed the American school system.

If you’ve gone to school in the United States in the past few decades, you have heard of the Brown v. Board of Education case. The lawsuit was taken to the Supreme Court after 9-year-old Linda Brown was denied enrollment in an all-white elementary school. Her father refused to allow this injustice to go unchallenged. He spent years fighting for not only his daughter’s rights, but the rights of children everywhere. In 1954, the Supreme Court ruled that segregated schools were unfair. Thus the work to give all children a just opportunity to learn began.

The little girl at the center of the case, Linda Brown, passed away on Sunday March 25th, at the age of 76.

But beyond the child we see standing in front of her segregated school in black and white news photographs, who was Linda Brown?

Linda was born to Oliver and Leola Brown in 1942. The family lived in Topeka, Kansas, and although it was not exactly the Deep South, the instances of racism were just as horrible. When Linda began school, the Browns were living within walking distance of Sumner Elementary School, an all-white campus.

Oliver was upset because his daughter could not attend the school that was nearest to them. Instead, Linda and her sisters trekked two miles to get to the bus stop that would take them to a faraway all-Black school.

Linda described the experience on Eyes on the Prize, the PBS documentary series:

“And then when wintertime came, it was a very cold walk. I remember that. I remember walking, tears freezing up on my face because I began to cry because it was so cold, and many times I had to turn around and run back home.”

After Linda was denied entry into Sumner, her father (along with the NAACP and other families whose children had been rejected from segregated schools) filed a lawsuit. They won the case unanimously. Linda Brown was in junior high school by the time the ruling was made.

Following a brief relocation to Missouri and the death of her father, Linda’s family found themselves back in Topeka, Kansas. Brown attended both Washburn University and Kansas State University. Throughout her life, she worked both as a public speaker and an education consultant. Brown also married twice — she and her first husband divorced, and her second husband sadly passed away.

Brown’s feelings about her childhood role as a symbol of the Civil Rights Movement were rightfully complex.

She eventually expressed disdain for the amount of attention the case had received. Linda felt as if people paid less attention to her as a human, and more attention to her as a concept signifying equality. It is difficult to find information about her life beyond the Supreme Court case, which makes her feelings that much easier to understand. After Linda’s passing, longtime friend Carolyn Campbell told The Topeka Capital-Journal, “It was difficult for Linda to be pushed into the spotlight at a young age.”

Despite the landmark victory, Linda knew that we still had work to do to achieve equality and desegregation in schools. Years later, the Topeka case was revitalized due to claims that the school system was continuing to segregate students. It took several years for a concrete ruling to be made. Following a federal decision that was overturned, there was a plan to truly integrate schools in 1993.

During this revisit of Brown v. Board of Education, Linda and one of her siblings started the Brown Foundation for Educational Equity, Excellence and Research in the late 1980s. The foundation awards scholarships to POC pursuing teaching degrees, holding conferences, and working to preserve the rights won by the Brown v. Board of Education case.

Linda Brown’s death is a reminder that many of those who participated in the Civil Rights Movement (such as Rosa Parks, Recy Taylor, and Fannie Lou Hamer) are no longer on this earth with us. But their stories of resilience live on through us. It is our duty to ensure that they are never forgotten.

How a Mysterious Case of ‘Missing Energy’ Caused Europe’s Clocks to Run 6 Minutes Slow

Europe’s integrated electricity network is getting back on track after a bizarre and unprecedented episode that caused clocks across the region to run at a delay of around six minutes.

Continental Europe boasts the world’s largest synchronous electricity grid–energy flows freely across the borders of 25 countries, at a fixed frequency of 50 Hz that is maintained by close coordination between the region’s power companies.

Maintaining the grid’s frequency is extremely important. If it were to drop below 47.6 Hz or goes above 52.5 Hz, the whole grid would automatically shut down, along with everything connected to it. However, much smaller deviations can also have an effect.

What happened here is that, from mid-January until two days ago, energy was “going missing” from the huge, interconnected system–by a tiny margin, more energy was being consumed than was being produced, leading the average frequency over that period to be 49.996 Hz rather than 50 Hz.

A lot of electric clocks, such as those on many radios and ovens, still keep time by synchronizing themselves to the frequency of the mains electricity supply, rather than an inbuilt quartz crystal (which is more expensive) or by connected to a “time server” on the Internet (more expensive still).

So even though the frequency discrepancy was very small, it slowly caused these clocks to fall behind.

And who was to blame? Kosovo, apparently.

According to the European Network of Transmission System Operators (ENTSO-E), the tiny Balkan state was from mid-January to this week consuming more energy than it produced, to the cumulative tune of 113 gigawatt hours.

“The deviation has stopped two days ago. Kosovo has accepted to stop it–they are back on track,” an ENTSO-E spokeswoman said. However, she added, the grid was still “under-frequency” and would need a bit of time to recover.

“We are still not sure that this problem is sustainably solved because some of the political reasons have not been stopped,” the spokeswoman said.

Kosovo declared independence from Servia in 2008, and is still only partially recognized as an independent state. The north of the tiny country is still largely loyal to Serbia, and the people there do not pay the Kosovo government for the energy they consume, even though it is generated on Kosovo soil.

So Kosovo’s energy producers are underfunded, being effectively unable to bill for much of the energy they put out. Worse, they are producing that energy using creaky old coal plants that are, apart from generating a lot of pollution, sometimes unreliable. A new coal plant, funded by the World Bank, is only scheduled for completion in a few years’ time.

As reported by Associated Press, the Serbian grid company EMS blamed Kosovo for “uninterruptedly withdrawing, in an unauthorized manner, uncontracted electric energy from the Continental Europe synchronous area.”

ENTSO-E’s spokeswoman was not sure how Kosovo managed to rebalance its electricity production and consumption, but said an increase in production was likely. Fortune has asked the Kosovo Energy Corporation (KEK) what happened, but had not received an answer at the time of writing.

6 reasons Betsy DeVos is extremely the worst, in case you forgot why you hate her

6 reasons Betsy DeVos is extremely the worst, in case you forgot why you hate her

6 reasons Betsy DeVos is extremely the worst, in case you forgot why you hate her

When Donald Trump won the election in 2016, our first thought (once we were able to stop spewing expletives) was that the country was in some major trouble. Not just because Trump is such an offensive human being, but because the people he was going to bring onto the team to make the big choices about keeping America safe, fed, healthy, and educated didn’t seemed concerned with making sure that anyone who wasn’t white, heterosexual, Christian, and already rich got any of those things. It’s hard to pick just one Worst Team Trump Player, but right now, it feels like Education Secretary Betsy DeVos might be the worst bad apple in the whole rotten bunch.

Everything she’s done so far has done nothing to fix the actual problems with our education system and what students have to deal with every day. On Tuesday, DeVos unravelled all of the hard-won progress for transgender students that happened under the Obama administration. The Trump administration overall has been rolling back protections for transgender students under Title IX, but DeVos hadn’t been super specific about how her department would interpret it. On Monday, spokesperson Liz Hill told BuzzFeed News:

“Title IX prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex, not gender identity.Where students, including transgender students, are penalized or harassed for failing to conform to sex-based stereotypes, that is sex discrimination prohibited by Title IX. In the case of bathrooms, however, long-standing regulations provide that separating facilities on the basis of sex is not a form of discrimination prohibited by Title IX.”

That’s outrageous, especially since two U.S. Circuit Courts have found that actually that’s not what the law says at all. In fact, the 7th Circuit wrote in Whitaker v. Kenosha Unified School District actually, forcing an individual to use a “bathroom that does not conform with his or her gender identity punishes that individual for his or her gender non‐conformance, which in turn violates Title IX.” That’s kind of a no brainer. That court decision is a precedent basically saying that if these complaints keep coming up and get sent all the way to the Supreme Court, they will likely win their case.

It would certainly be nice if Betsy DeVos understood what gender identity actually meant and could advocate for some of our most at-risk youth, the ones we should be doing everything we can to protect and keep safe. We know too much about what bullying, discrimination, and forcibly prescribing identity does to a child to not be outraged by this. But DeVos is stone cold — and it’s not the only abhorrent attribute she’s brought to her role.

Here are some other ways in which she is proving to be the absolute worst.

1. She cut student loan aid this week.

On Monday, she released a budget proposal that would make paying back our student loans a whole lot harder. She wants to consolidate the income-based repayment plans so that the period of time to repayment is shorter but raises the bill to 12.5 percent of a person’a income. She also wants to stop paying interest for lower-income students and get rid of the program that forgives loans for public servants. This will, according to the Washington Post, raise the cost of college by $ 200 billion within the next ten years. This means that millions of people will have to make a choice between a higher education or not going into debilitating debt. And if they do decide to borrow, they can just live in almost poverty like the majority of millennials already do. Nice one, Betsy.

2. She is so corrupt.

Oh, she also has financial ties to the companies that she wants to collect these predatory loans, because of course she does. The worst part is that she doesn’t even try to hide this fact.

3. She promotes this school “choice” thing.

DeVos calls her policy “school choice,” but it’s really a system to further segregate schools and ensure that wealthy, able children get services and can go to private schools and those that need them the most don’t have access. She heads up our public education system and has called it a “dead end” and a “monopoly,” which is just outrageous. How can you be fundamentally opposed to the thing you’re supposed to manage? Research is mixed when it comes to voucher programs, but most education experts (and not DeVos, who just knows the private, Christian schools she attended growing up) content that they don’t serve everyone, which is what a federal education department is supposed to do.

4. She is not on the side of teachers.

Two of the heads of the biggest teacher unions, the American Federation of Teachers and the National Education Association — two, mind you — went to the headquarters to bring DeVos 80,000 “report cards” from teachers who wrote their assessment of her suggested budgets and policies as a protest, but also a real sit down meeting with the head of the public education system. But they locked the doors! Protests are a right in pretty much all forms, but this was the most civilized way to “storm” the building we can think of.

“They don’t even have the respect to actually take the petitions, and the comments, and what people have said in a respectful way and deliver it to the secretary,” Randi Weingarten, the head of the AFT told the Washington Post.

5. She thinks God belongs in schools.

DeVos has said that she wants to “advance God’s kingdom” through our school districts. “There are not enough philanthropic dollars in America to fund what is currently the need in education…Our desire is to confront the culture in ways that will continue to advance God’s kingdom,” she once said, according to Mother Jones. We don’t really know what that means either, but it sounds like it’s forcing one idea of religion onto what is supposed to be a place separate from the church.

Oh, also she comes from a family that thinks Creationism should be taught in schools, doesn’t mind abstinence-only sex ed, and believes in conversion therapy. She’s distanced herself from those positions since getting on board the Trump train, but we’re not buying that she’s had a change of heart considering her own statements about religion in schools.

6. She’s not the most familiar with public education.

She has never attended a public school, or sent her children to one, so how can she have any real idea how amazing they can be and how to come up with innovative ways to make our system better?

LONDON—The Moscow operation behind the now infamous Russian-Trump Tower meeting in June 2016 included a direct attempt to enlist a foreign country’s law enforcement official as a virtual double-agent, according to a court case in Switzerland.

One of Switzerland’s top investigators has been fired after allegations of bribery, violating secrecy laws and “unauthorized clandestine behavior” in meeting with the very same Russian actors linked to the Trump Tower encounter.

Details of the explosive case have been published by investigative reporters for the Tribune de Genève and Tages-Anzeiger newspapers in Switzerland. Keyshia Cole Pays Over $100K In Assault Case

Singer Keyshia Cole has to cough up some cash after she allegedly assaulted a woman at Birdman’s condo in Los Angeles three years ago.

BET reports that Sabrina Mercadel took Cole to court in July and asked for $ 4 million for attacking her. The incident took place at Birdman’s house who Cole was dating at the time.

The attack is believed to have come from Cole seeing another woman in the rappers house which angered her. Cole allegedly pulled Mercadel’s hair, scratched her face and left bruises on her body.

Cole was later arrested for battery and reckless driving warrant that she had at the time. Mercadel says she lost the use of a finger and initially asked for $ 4 million. However, $ 100, 635 was what Mercadel received after the court case.

DJ Jam Master Jay Death Ruled A Cold Case

One of Hip Hop’s unsolved mystery the murder of Jam Master Jay has been ruled a cold case by police.

Jam Master Jay was shot and killed on October 30, 2002, in his Queens, NY studio. Police say that two men were let into the building where his recording studio was. One of the men embraced the DJ when gunfire rang out from the studio. Shot at point blank, Jay was shot in the head and killed.

Four other people were reported to be in the studio during the incident but have not come forward with any information about it. Of them one was named a suspect, however, charges were never brought against him.

After 15 years with no leads or breaks in the investigation, the New York Police Department has ruled it a cold case.

“We know it’s any anniversary but we don’t like to talk about it much anymore,” said Jam Master Jay’s older sister, Bonita Jones in an interview with XXLMag. The family has taken the loss of his life and unresolved murder very hard.

Why Trump Should Be Afraid With Robert Mueller on the Case

Taylor Swift will likely take the stand in a case against a DJ who allegedly groped her

It looks like after approximately two years of litigation, Taylor Swift will finally be taking the stand. The singer-songwriter will likely testify against radio DJ David Mueller, the man accused of groping Swift at a meet-and-greet event in 2013, during civil court proceedings scheduled to begin next week.

Back in 2013, Swift accused Mueller, co-host of KYGO’s Reno and Jackson radio show, of reaching under her skirt and grabbing her bare butt during a backstage photo op at a Swift concert in Denver, Colorado. Immediately following the incident, Swift notified her tour manager and security team, who then tracked down Mueller, removed him and his girlfriend (who was present at the time of the encounter) from the event, and banned him from Swift shows for life.

When Mueller’s employers at KYGO caught wind of the altercation, they promptly fired Mueller, citing the morality clause in his contract after it was revealed he was less-than-truthful about the details of the incident. Out of a job, Mueller claimed he was falsely accused and now seeks $ 3 million in damages.

But T-Swift is not backing down. Just 23 at the time of the assault, the superstar said she was “shocked and distressed by Mueller’s harmful and offensive physical conduct” in court documents. Hoping the case serves as “an example to other women who may resist publicly reliving similar outrageous and humiliating acts,” Swift has vowed to donate any monies awarded to her by the court to non-profit organizations “dedicated to protecting women from similar acts of sexual assault and personal disregard.”

This isn’t the first time Swift has spoken out against perpetrators of sexual assault. Last year, Swift gifted pop star Kesha with $ 250,000 in a show of support of the singer in the wake of an unsuccessful lawsuit against her record producer and alleged sexual assailant, Dr. Luke.

We’ve always got your back, Taylor!

Heys Batman Deluxe Carry On Luggage Case

Heys Batman Deluxe Carry On Luggage Case

Designed especially for kids. This luggage featuring Batman was created by Heys with the unique characteristics of children in mind. Incorporating several design features that benefit children, these cases are the perfect travel companion. This beautiful case has Batman specially printed onto its hardshell surface. In creating a ‘High-end’ series for Batman, our designers incorporated several children-specific features. One of these is the internal ‘reversed-curved’ handle system that curves the handle inwards & upwards closer to the child, making it much more comfortable for the child – at a low height – to hold and navigate the case. The Patent Protected design of this case also allows the wheels to ‘protrude’ out. This protrusion keeps the case elevated, so that even when being rolled at a very low height off the floor, the wheels will be the only point of contact and the case will continue to roll with ease. The cases weigh in at a mere 3.7 lbs, and feature our inline skate wheels that make their rolling even smoother, so any child can easily wheel these fun cases around. They also have a zipper closure system, that when opened reveals a beautifully lined interior as well as a zippered divider for internal organization.
