Chase is eliminating these big credit card benefits as of August 26

Credit card companies are taking a hatchet to their benefits for customers — and there’s no end in sight, with the latest announcement from one of the nation’s biggest issuers.

RELATED: Discover is eliminating these 5 credit card benefits in 2018

Chase gets ready to eliminate Price Protection and Return Protection

Effective August 26, Chase will no longer offer Price Protection or Return Protection to its customers. Some customers were informed of the change over the weekend.

Price Protection is a beloved benefit that’s available across several card networks. In general, it promises to refund the difference in price between an item you buy and an advertised sale price that may pop up on that same item anytime between 60 and 90 days down the road.

Chase’s competitor Citi announced just days ago that they’d be paring down their proprietary price protection program called Citi Price Rewind.

But Chase is going one step further than Citi did and axing its version of price protection completely.

Also being shut down at Chase is Return Protection, which makes it up to customers if they buy something they’re unhappy with and the merchant refuses to take it back and refund their money. Chase currently offers up to $ 250 for each eligible item with a $ 1,000 annual maximum as part of its current return protection policy — but all you’ll get is a big, fat goose egg come August 26!

Yet as Chase taketh away, the card issuer also giveth. Cardholders of select products such as the Chase Freedom Visa Platinum will have Trip Cancellation/Interruption Insurance added to their card on August 26.

Beginning on that date, the added coverage will provide reimbursement of up to $ 1,500 per person and $ 6,000 per trip for pre-paid, non-refundable passenger fares. To meet the criteria to get the money, your trip must be canceled or cut short by sickness, severe weather or other covered situations.

Money expert Clark Howard has long recommended trip insurance for cruises and for when you’re going to be touring or traveling on a trip that requires prepayment of thousands of dollars.

So on the plus side, Chase’s addition of cancellation/interruption insurance for some customers could negate the need for them to buy third-party trip insurance. Just be sure you read through Chase’s policy carefully to see what it covers and what it excludes before deciding to forego traditional trip insurance you might buy elsewhere.

JPMorgan Chase Invests $10 Million to Expand Black Businesses and Growth in D.C.

Washington, D.C. is home to some of the most powerful people, business, and government entities in America. Paradoxically, the nation’s capital also has some impoverished neighborhoods with woes that include high joblessness, failing businesses, and inadequate affordable housing.

(A street in D.C. Image: Flickr/tedeytan)

Banking giant JPMorgan Chase & Co. aims to lessen the economic disparity dilemma by investing $ 10 million over three years into the District’s Wards 7 and 8.

Minority-Owned Small Business Expansion Part of Growth Plan

The nation’s largest bank claims the move will combine its business expertise and collaboration with local business and community leaders to invest in four key drivers of inclusive growth: jobs and skills, minority-owned small business expansion, neighborhood revitalization, and financial health.

“Greater Washington is one of the world’s most economically influential regions yet not all residents benefit equally,” Jamie Dimon, chairman and CEO of JPMorgan Chase said in a statement. “We’re investing in D.C. because we see local leaders working together and innovating to make the opportunity available to all Washingtonians no matter the neighborhood they live in.”

The investment is the bank’s third in a major U.S. city. JPMorgan announced in September its plan to invest $ 40 million to help deter violence and poverty in Chicago’s South and West sides. That announcement came just before the bank’s Washington, D.C. commitment. In 2014, the bank invested $ 100 million in Detroit when the city was experiencing bankruptcy. JPMorgan later raised the amount to $ 150 million after claiming success from its initial investment.

Bank Plans to Use Similar Model Used to Spark Growth in Detroit

JPMorgan Chase plans to use several global initiatives to help spur growth in Washington, similar to the model it adopted for Detroit and Chicago. Those efforts will include offering workers job and skills training and providing minority small business owners capital and expertise they need to grow. The bank intends to help revitalize underserved neighborhoods by investing in affordable housing.

The bank contends Greater Washington has the nation’s third-largest regional economy. The region includes the largest high-tech corridor outside of Silicon Valley and a highly skilled and educated workforce. Plus, Washington for years has been one of the nation’s most expensive housing markets for home buyers and renters.

Still, parts of the region are hurting. The District’s Wards 7 and 8 and adjacent counties in Maryland are facing high poverty and unemployment rates, displacement of local businesses, economic instability, and limited affordable housing, bank and local officials say.

Concerns About Gentrification Tied to Bridge Project

Some $ 5 million of the bank’s investment will be used by a Washington, D.C.-based collaborative of Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) to address the racial and economic disparity in those wards stemming from the development of the 11th Street Bridge Park. That project will connect some of the region’s poorest areas with wealthier ones. A few are concerned the project could create gentrification by bumping up housing prices, making housing in the area too costly for some residents.

“We’re thrilled that JPMorgan Chase recognizes the community-driven work we are doing to ensure nearby residents can stay and thrive in place,” stated Scott Kratz, director, 11th Street Bridge Park, a project of Building Bridges Across the River. “Bringing affordable housing, job opportunities and wealth creation are critical to maintaining the integrity and sustainability of the neighborhoods east of the Anacostia River.”

The remaining $ 5 million will be used to provide more residents in Wards 7 and 8 and throughout D.C. with opportunities to benefit from the region’s economic growth. For instance, the money could be used to provide loans to black-owned small businesses.

Finding My Tribe Thanks to ‘Buffy’s Cordelia Chase

When I first watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer I was by no means a geek virgin. My old VHS tapes were full of Star Trek episodes. I considered it my duty to watch and show my support of any fantasy or science fiction show that premiered on TV. I did this by continuing to watch shows even when they weren’t good (I’m looking at you, Sliders.) This didn’t make me popular with the kids at school. When the other kids wanted to talk about boys, I wanted to talk about the latest Star Trek: Voyager episode.

What a Geek Girl Wants

‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ cast season 1

When Buffy premiered, it was another geek show, so I knew I would watch it. And I liked it. It had a cool concept but there wasn’t anything that really hooked me. I had always felt drawn to characters who were outsiders. As a young geek girl who preferred to stay home watching old episodes of Quantum Leap than going out with my fellow teenagers, I was by all definitions an outsider.

The characters in Buffy were on the outskirts of the high school social hierarchy. They were considered weird and geeky. The problem was that the stories in Buffy were from these characters’ perspectives so they weren’t really outsiders. It was a fun show but I couldn’t relate to them. I persisted anyway and didn’t spare it any further thought.

Enter: Cordelia Chase

cordelia chase buffy angel

That is until the character of Cordelia Chase came along. On the surface, Cordelia was the complete opposite of me. She was a rich, popular American cheerleader. I was a poor, unpopular British teenager who couldn’t do the splits to save her life. Yet I felt drawn to this character. This was an outsider. The vapid Valley girl who did everything she could to fit in and hide her true loneliness.

At the time, I was trying to fit in with kids at school. I did this by ignoring my geeky interests in favour of what the masses considered popular. With Cordelia, I finally found someone I could identify with. Cordelia was frequently underestimated and even though she was always on the fringes of the other characters’ inner circle, she always persevered.

‘Angel’ cast Season 1

When Cordelia left the show in the season three finale, I was excited. I knew she was going to be one of the leads in the Buffy spin-off, Angel. This was the chance to further explore her character. I became obsessed with the spin-off show that featured misfit characters who came together and found common ground. It’s a frequently told story, but when executed correctly, it’s a thing of beauty. Over the course of these shows, Cordelia showed her unfailing ability to be selfless and help people in need. This is the kind of person I wanted to be.

From Frustration to Fan Fic

Cordelia chase s4 angel

In later seasons, Cordelia’s character took a different direction. After all of her struggles, she deserved a happier ending to her character arc. However, this frustration would lead me to a lasting love of fan fiction.

Fan fiction was a new and exciting concept for me. Here you had stories written by fans like me about every aspect of the show. In my early days of reading fan fiction, I read a new story every night, seeking out the Cordelia stories first. Many of the stories were so well written they could have been an extra episode of the show. As someone who loves reading, I was in heaven.

Seeing the support and comments from fellow fans on the fan sites was encouraging. I knew I had found my tribe. So I started writing my own Cordelia-focused fan fiction. Cordelia showed me how even the least likely person can grow up and fulfill their potential. Even if it’s not the one they would have ever imagined for themselves.

It’s hard to believe it’s been 20 years since Buffy the Vampire Slayer premiered. Now, I’m a proud geek who reads and writes fan fiction on various fandoms. It’s never too late to find your tribe. I’ve found mine and I owe it all to Cordelia Chase.

Ford Bronco From O.J. Simpson Chase Will Appear on ‘Pawn Stars’

The infamous white Ford Bronco is making its second TV debut. But this time, it won’t be carrying O.J. Simpson on his slow-speed chase down Los Angeles’ 405 freeway.

The San Francisco Examiner reports that the car is slated to appear on the History Channel’s “Pawn Stars” — a show set at the Las Vegas-based World Famous Gold & Silver Pawn Shop. The episode, which is called “If the Pawn Don’t Fit,” will air on Monday, Aug. 14, at 10 p.m., the Examiner reports.

Simpson’s former sports agent, Mike Gilbert, who is also the current owner of the SUV, is working with History to strike the deal.

“Not many people realize it’s for sale … and I just thought it was a really cool thing to put on the show,” Rick Harrison, one of the show’s personalities and co-owner of the store, told the Examiner.

Twenty-three years ago, the 1993 Bronco was driven by Simpson’s friend Al Cowlings five days after the murders of Simpson’s ex-wife, Nicole Brown, and Ron Goldman, according to the Examiner.

Gilbert bought the vehicle from Cowlings for $ 75,000. But other than being displayed in a Las Vegas casino in 2003, it has been kept in storage.

Chase Your Dream, Not Your Dragon

There is nobody like you on the planet, and with the right development, we can attract the support of others who will welcome our dream, too.

With growth, there will always be an opportunity to attain the thing you want, no matter how it shows itself. To imagine a life without a dream, even the tiniest one, is submitting to a world of mediocrity.

Jenn is principled, articulate and passionate – but running for Congress is a steep climb.

According to Malcolm Gladwell’s book Outliers and the ten-thousand-hour rule of “deliberate practice,” which asserts that to become a world-class expert in any field, a person must practice their skill or trade for ten thousand hours. The Beatles did it in Hamburg and Steve Jobs in a high school computer lab. Gladwell believed that by reaching 10,000 hours (that’s about 90 minutes per day for 20 years) of practice you can become an outlier – the “Tipping-Point” of greatness.

Today, we have new rules. We believe that if we think about one thing long enough it will hardwire into us. Our new cracked system of facts makes it possible for anyone to claim anything as reality in a post-truth era. But Gladwell’s ten-thousand-hour rule offers a greater prospect of deciphering the faux from the real deal.

Let’s be honest, for most folk winning a congressional race is near on impossible. The odds are stacked high. To succeed, Jenn would need media coverage, infrastructure and money. It takes years to build all three components, and Jenn has none. Although principled, articulate and passionate, her feelings of self-worth are now at ground zero.

Running for Congress is Jenn’s go-to story, how she defines her world. But, in truth, she has no resources or support. She has moderate experience and no plans. “If you can’t link the dots,” I told her, “Your approach will always let you down.”

She felt like she had failed. But in hindsight, she hadn’t failed at all; she was just beginning.

I had spent a good 30 minutes listening to Jenn. She must have mentioned grassroots at least seven times. There is always a clue if you listen to a person long enough. I let her know that.

My thought was to open more of a dialogue about her interest in grassroots work.

Her eyes lit up as she rambled excitingly about working as an activist. A grassroots activist. Her inspiration was back. She felt energized.

Did she want to work for an organization to help women, or apply for a grassroots internship? “Oh,” she said, “So many thoughts, so many decisions – I can’t wait to make them all.”

She smiled, and with that I knew she was well on her way towards her heart dream. And who knows, she may become a congressional winner after all.

Just really, believe in what you’re trying to do. Don’t let people alter that. Let people advise you and lead you down paths to make smart business decisions. But trust your instinct and trust that overwhelming drive that made you put all your dreams and everything on the line. –Luke Bryan
