AT&T Diversity Chief: “Diversity Means Creating a Culture”

A 22-year veteran at AT&T, Corey Anthony has held leadership positions in an array of vital areas, ranging from wireless and network operations to finance and global customer service. His current role at the telecom giant, which produced revenues of $ 160.5 billion and had roughly 254,000 employees on its payroll in 2017, gives Anthony the opportunity to have a “meaningful and lasting impact [and] be able to help shape the culture as we go forward in our business.” In edited excerpts from this exclusive interview, Anthony shares how the application of AT&T’s Diversity & Inclusion Best Practices advances innovative problem-solving, supplier diversity, race relations, and corporate leadership.

Define what diversity and inclusion means at AT&T and to you personally.
Trying to define diversity is almost like trying to define leadership. There are so many different definitions based on whom you happen to be talking to at the time. What diversity and inclusion really means here at AT&T is a couple things that are really, really important. One is being able to attract and embrace the best talent, period. Once we get that talent, being able to embrace that person for the uniqueness that he or she brings to the business, period. Once I have them in the business, diversity means creating a culture in which they can realize their fullest potential. If I’m creating an environment where I am facilitating opportunities so people can realize their fullest potential then we’re at our best in our business. It’s beautiful for both the company and the individual when we have that kind of environment. For me, diversity and inclusion encapsulates that.

Give me an example of how D&I plays a role in AT&T’s innovation and growth.
When we talk about diversity here at AT&T, it’s not just in the traditional sense of gender, race, and ethnicity but also cognitive style. It’s very key in driving innovation in our business. When we put a problem on the table, we want that table to be very diverse so everybody is looking at that problem not through the same lens. We all bring different backgrounds and varied experience sets to the table to try and arrive at the best solution for that problem. That drives innovation because the people who are around that table feel very valued because they have the ability to contribute to that solution, which leads to a better solution and creates this virtuous cycle.

“We embrace talent for the uniqueness they bring to our business, period.”

Too many companies check the box when it comes to diversity. AT&T, however, repeatedly demonstrates transformative D&I leadership. As such, do you share best practices with corporate peers and guide them?
We do. We spend a fair amount of time partnering with other entities, companies, and organizations in not only sharing some of our best practices as they relate to diversity and inclusion but also learning from them. I agree, we’ve been recognized externally as one of the leaders in the space, and we believe not only do we have a responsibility to perpetuate diversity and inclusion inside of the business, but we also have a responsibility to do what’s best for the communities where we work and live, and where our customers work and live.

Do you mandate suppliers to follow suit or do you encourage them?
It manifests itself in a few ways. No. 1, we model the behavior that we expect from our partners and suppliers. We want to be that example of what a successful business looks like that embraces diversity and inclusion. No. 2, we’re very clear about what our expectations are.

What are your expectations?
That you do everything that you can within your business, if you partner with us, to model the same behavior that you see from us. It’s not a mandate in the sense that we give them a miracle target or anything like that. It’s an expectation that you value diversity in your business in the same fashion that we value it in ours, and then we expect to see empirical evidence of that as well.
We take another step. We literally have a program where we help our suppliers identify minority-owned businesses as an example that they can partner with in terms of subcontracting and other relationships to meet our needs. It isn’t just a conversation we’re having. It isn’t just us modeling it. We’re also giving them tools and actually helping them to be able to achieve that in their business as well.

A member of the Billion Dollar Roundtable—corporations that spend $ 1 billion or more with minority suppliers—AT&T has also led when it comes to procurement spend among such firms. How can its approach to supplier diversity be replicated?
There are a number of reasons why we’re successful. One very important reason is our chairman and CEO Randall L. Stephenson has been very clear about his expectation of the business. I would argue that everything around diversity and inclusion has to start with leadership. For us, that means the board of directors and our chairman have been very clear about the expectation for AT&T as it relates to supplier diversity.
Two, we look at it as a partnership. We work with the supplier community to help them, in some cases, build their businesses [so they’re] able to partner with us at the scale in which they have to work with us.

You made a point that AT&T’s diversity and inclusion mandate comes from the top. Last year, the CEO went a step further in an address to the staff, stating the importance of having an honest conversation on race. That’s basically unheard of in corporate America. Tell us the impact of that statement and how you’ve created a program to foster such discussions.
Randall’s remarks at last year’s Employer Resource Group conference was one of the more interesting dynamics I’ve seen in our business. I will tell you a couple things. It wasn’t planned. His remarks were heartfelt, and they were his. What made that so interesting is that we didn’t plan for it to go external. The really beautiful part about what he did was give us all the permission to have the conversation inside of the business. He was the first one to do it. He did it in a very eloquent, very thoughtful way. He set the example for the business.
What we did was say: “OK, now that Randall has opened that door, we want to have those conversations. We want to have those effective, productive conversations in the business. How can we help facilitate that without turning it into a program that everybody has to do, and track it?” We didn’t want it to be a top-down program approach. We wanted it to happen more organically. In HR, we said: “What we will provide is not a structured program, but we will give you some tools to help have those conversations.” We did that, and we called it, “Tolerance to Understanding.” A key part of his message was cowards simply tolerate. We really need to move to full understanding, embracing. As a leader of your team, you decide, “I want to have a similar conversation with my team,” then we will give you some tools and resources, sometimes in the form of a person, that will help facilitate that conversation on your team.

It’s been extremely valuable. We’ve had thousands of people who have been impacted by these conversations. They have been springing up all over our business even to the point that it’s not domestic only. We’re having some conversations across the globe now. It’s been a key inflection point for AT&T since he made those remarks last fall.

Amazon’s Echo Device Chief on the Risk of Alexa’s Many Rewards

Imagine an always-on digital-assistant who is friendly, will turn off your lights, order from your shopping list, can chat about anything from the World Cup to Japanese anime, and who will also know to cheer you up when you’re feeling blue. This is part of the array of delights that Toni Reid, Amazon’s vice president of Alexa experience and Echo devices, thinks about when she considers the future of the smart speaker she’s overseen from its earliest inception.

It starts with the human element. “What surprised us was how many times people were asking questions that didn’t need an answer,” Reid told the crowd at Fortune’s Fortune’s Brainstorm Tech conference in Aspen, Colo on Monday. People so often share things like expressions of loneliness and frustration, or a romantic longing for “Alexa” herself, that their editorial team spends a lot of time thinking about how the service can continually respond in ways that are relevant. “We work hard to build in these ‘delighters’ for the customer experience…. And we’ve taken that approach globally,” said Reid.

But these Alexa’s delights are not without risk.

Reid addressed a recent incident in which an Alexa device recorded an Oregon woman’s private conversation and shared it with a random person in her contact list. Privacy has always been top of mind, said Reid, ticking through a list of design elements: The device has a mute button; it lights up to show users it’s listening; and owners can review and delete whatever Alexa has recorded them asking or saying. Heck, people can unplug it if they want to. “We built in multiple safeguards and it still failed,” Reid said.

She understands how that incident makes consumers who are already concerned about data privacy even more nervous. According to Reid, the data Alexa collects is only used to improve the speech technology itself, to better understand the intent of the consumer. “Nothing else.”

Reid just celebrated her twentieth anniversary at the company, a milestone which comes with a gray badge. “To match the gray in my hair,” she joked. “We were just a bookstore,” she said when she first became of only 600 Amazon employees.

Even though Amazon boasts more than a half million employees now, she says the company operates more like a collection of start-ups. “We can try new things, fail fast, and take an interactive approach,” she said. “Alexa was a bold bet we thought we could make.”

Intel Corp. Names Window Snyder As Its First Chief Security Officer

Window Snyder will leave Fastly at the end of the month to join Intel’s Platform Security Division at its new chief software security officer, vice president, and general manager.

At her new role, which she begins in early July, Snyder will be responsible for ensuring that Intel maintains a competitive security product roadmap across all segments in support of business group objectives and continues to engage with the external security ecosystem to apply industry trends and sensing to Intel roadmap differentiation. She joins Intel from content distribution network Fastly where she was the chief security officer.

Snyder began her career as a software engineer at Axent Technologies in 1997, leaving in 1999 to join @stake as its director of Security Architecture. In 2002, she joined Microsoft as a senior security strategist in the company’s Security Engineering and Communications organization, most notably as security lead and sign off on Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Windows Server 2003. Snyder helped formalize the process to secure Windows. She also created Blue Hat, an event that “invited hackers to expose the flaws in the company’s software in front of its creators.”

In 2005, she co-founded Matasano, a services company where she was chief technology officer, leaving a year later to join The Mozilla Corp. as its security chief. Snyder was credited with “professionalizing the Firefox security response team, at a time when the open-source browser was increasingly coming under attack from hackers” according to PC World. She left Mozilla in late 2008, and worked as a consultant for about a year before joining Apple in 2010 as a senior security product manager, spending five years working on the company’s security and privacy strategy.

According to The Register:

“The hiring comes in the middle of what has been, to say the least, a difficult year for Intel on the security front, at least in terms of optics. In early January, The Register kicked up details on three major data-spilling security flaws, dubbed Spectre and Meltdown, that were present in Intel’s microarchitectures, and Intel was subsequently ripped for its handling of the situation. By May, details emerged on another class of side-channel vulnerabilities present in Intel’s CPUs, and in June yet another bug was found that could potentially cause programs to leak encryption keys and other sensitive information. The Snyder hiring is also a sign that Intel isn’t going to put its business on hold while it searches for a new top boss, following the shock departure of CEO Brian Krzanich last week.”

Xerox Chief Out, Snap Tumble, Trump’s Health: CEO Daily for May 2, 2018

Every business needs to reinvent itself continuously, now more than ever. (Product plug: It’s why Fortune is launching the Brainstorm Reinvent conference in Chicago in September.) Big, slow-moving companies focused on dominant but mature product categories find the notion of reinvention particularly terrifying.

Consider, then, the spectacular renewal story unfolding at Apple, a gigantic, fast-moving corporation that reaps 62% of its revenue from one product, the iPhone. Apple declared a few years ago that “services,” by which it means subscriptions and online apps, would become a growth driver. In an earnings report Tuesday that exceeded recently reduced expectations, Apple showed the dramatic results of this effort.

Apple, the ultimate device company, reported services revenue of $ 9.2 billion, a respectable 15% of the total. That’s up six percentage points from three years ago. More impressively, services grew 31% year-over-year (versus 16% overall) and were the only Apple category to grow from the previous, holiday-juiced quarter. (iPhones, iPads, Macs, and “other” products make up the balance; services are larger than Macs.)

This reinvention may seem like an obvious strategy, but it wasn’t always. Apple long has prided itself on packaging clever software with gorgeous hardware. Customers bought new gadgets when Apple gave them something new to buy. That’s a still-important–but more problematic–business proposition as computers of all shapes and sizes last longer. So Apple has made a virtue of its 1.3 billion phones and other devices in the wild, all delivery mechanisms for its services.

For Apple to keep up its torrid growth–for an enormous company, that is–it will need whole new device categories and a phone more mind-blowing than the pricey iPhone X. In the meantime, a non-trivial fillip like a basket of services that includes Apple Pay and Apple Music is the mark of a company with an eye to the future.

Quickly, please have a look at this troubling essay by historian Jay M. Smith about a giant business–big-time college sports–that hasn’t reinvented itself in years. For proof of this issue’s timelessness, peruse this 1990 article about a famous magazine piece, “Gate Receipts and Glory,” that decried the pernicious effects of moneyed sports on academic life–in 1938.

Xerox Chief Out

Xerox’s CEO and most of its board are heading for the exit to settle a suit waged by Carl Icahn and fellow shareholder Darwin Deason. The pair won a court order blocking a merger with Fujifilm Holdings. So CEO Jeff Jacobson is out and former Novitex boss John Visentin will take his place, according to the settlement. One issue though: Fujifilm will fight both the settlement and the merger-blocking court ruling. Reuters

Snap Tumble

Snap’s shares cratered yesterday, falling 15% after reporting disappointing revenues. Analysts expected $ 244.5 million for Q1; the Snapchat maker delivered $ 230.7 million. This is largely because of Snapchat’s poorly-received redesign, which separated the feeds of celebrities and brands from those of regular users. User growth was just 2% quarter-over-quarter, and Snapchat had 191 million daily active users in the quarter–analysts wanted 194.2 million. Fortune

China Negotiations

Chinese state media has warned the White House that it should not expect its counterparts to give in to all of President Donald Trump’s demands, ahead of a meeting that’s supposed to settle trade tensions. “Washington had better not expect that its trade-war stick will force Beijing to take whatever the U.S. delegation offers,” said the Global Times state mouthpiece. The meeting will take place tomorrow and Friday. CNBC

Trump’s Health

Harold Bornstein, the Trump physician who famously told the world that his patient’s “physical strength and stamina are extraordinary” at the outset of Trump’s presidential campaign, now says Trump himself dictated the letter. “[Trump] dictated the letter and I would tell him what he couldn’t put in there,” he said. Bornstein is out of Trump’s circle now, and alleges that former Trump bodyguard Keith Schiller and another “large man” raided his office in February 2017, to retrieve Trump’s medical records. CNN

President Trump’s current legal team doesn’t have the security clearances they would need to discuss issues related to Trump’s potential grilling by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, Bloomberg reports. United Pets

United will resume allowing passengers’ cats and dogs to travel in its planes’ cargo holds, after reviewing pet transport rules. The review was precipitated by a dog’s death in an overhead luggage bin. United said it will only carry certain breeds in its cargo holds, and it won’t fly animals to or from certain airports in summer, Las Vegas being one example. Wall Street Journal

BMW Safety

A British inquest into the death of a former soldier was told that BMW had failed to recall thousands of cars in the country, despite a government agency warning it of a fault. Narayan Gurung crashed into a tree on Christmas 2016 after swerving to avoid a BMW that had stalled due to an electric fault. The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency had apparently been sending vehicle safety defect reports to the automaker from 2011 on. It was only after Gurung’s death that BMW told its customers about the flaw and recalled 36,000 cars. Times of London

Blockchain Hype

Blockchain experts have been testifying to the British Parliament about the technology, and it doesn’t seem like they’re hugely confident in its supposedly world-changing potential. As the Financial Times (whose writer also testified) reported, a diamond-registration blockchain exec noted that the system was “garbage in, garbage out,” and a researcher designing blockchain-based voting systems said the technology would only be useful for recording final results, rather than validating individual votes. Conclusion? “It sounds like the pixie dust is starting to wear off.” FT

Cryptocurrencies Like Bitcoin Can’t Replace the Dollar, Says New York Fed Chief Nominee

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey predicted that Bitcoin will eclipse all the world’s currencies in around 10 years .

But the man nominated to be head of the New York Federal Reserve disagrees. In a speech Friday, the current San Francisco Fed President John Williams laid out a case for why cryptocurrencies, the most prominent of which is Bitcoin, cannot replace paper money.

Like others who question Bitcoin’s usefulness as a currency, Williams noted that cryptocurrencies are volatile, making it difficult to pay the correct price for an item. Secondly, while the world’s central banks try to stabilize the economy at times by either increasing or decreasing the amount of cash circulating, Bitcoin has a fixed supply: 20 million.

“Cryptocurrency doesn’t pass the basic test of what a currency should be,” he said, as reported by CNBC.

Still, some entrepreneurs are hoping to address the shortcomings of using cryptocurrency. Most recently, a project seeking to keep the price of a cryptocurrency at $ 1, dubbed Basis, raised $ 133 million in venture capital funding. Its creator, Nader Al-Naji, added that he was uncomfortable spending Bitcoin, because he thought it could rocket up to a much higher value.

The price of Bitcoin is up about 7% today to $ 8,800 after peaking around $ 20,000 in December.

That’s not to say all cryptocurrency proponents feel the same. Twitter CEO Dorsey has said he personally thinks Bitcoin will be used as a currency.

“The world ultimately will have a single currency, the Internet will have a single currency. I personally believe that it will be Bitcoin,” Dorsey told the The Times of London in March.

That comes as critics and proponents alike debate over the status of cryptocurrency and how to regulate it–even as it grows harder to wrap all digital assets into one category. Cryptocurrency has undergone an explosion in recent years, with entrepreneurs creating cryptocurrencies to raise funds or even just for fun. So while they are considered commodities by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, many are also thought to be securities that grant their owners a share of an underlying company or project.

Shaq Becomes ‘Chief Fun Officer’ of Carnival Cruise Line

He’s larger than life—literally and figuratively—and he’s now added a new, fun job title to his already very diverse and accomplished résumé. Shaquille O’Neal, an NBA Hall of Famer, sworn-in police officer, entrepreneur, and TNT commentator, will be joining Carnival Cruise Line as their newly appointed Chief Fun Officer or “CFO.”

The leisure travel company used a humorous video that features Shaq and Carnival President Christine Duffy in the cruise line’s newest brand campaign, “Choose Fun,” which launched last week. Shaq will be featured on video content and social media, taking viewers on a 30-second tour of Carnival Vista and using his charisma to showcase Carnival’s attractions and experiences, including on the SkyRide, at the Havana pool, Cloud 9 Spa, Guy Fieri’s Burger Joint—and on the basketball court.

“We are very excited to have Shaq as part of the Carnival team! He will serve as a great partner ensuring everyone knows all about our one-of-a-kind brand of fun,” Duffy said in a news release. “We’re confident that his embodiment of our brand values will inspire America to Choose Fun and discover the authentic, participatory and social atmosphere that Carnival offers.”

“In today’s world, it’s more important than ever to choose fun, especially when everyone is busy with work, family, and life in general,” Shaq said in a statement. “So, I’m honored to be appointed the Chief Fun Officer at Carnival—a company that lives and breathes fun.”

Carnival Cruise Line, one of Black Enterprise’s “50 Best Companies for Diversity” in 2016, has a fleet of 25 ships that caters to 5 million guests a year, according to the company, and in spring 2018 the 133,500-ton Carnival Horizon will debut as the 26th ship in the fleet.

Ex-Police Chief Who Compared Blacks To ISIS, Arrested By FBI For Hate Crime

Frank Nucera

Retired New Jersey police chief Frank Nucera was arrested and charged by FBI officials on Wednesday for committing a federal hate crime.

Nucera, who presided over the Bordentown police department retired in January after the attorney general of New Jersey caught wind of an investigation launched into the officer.

CNN reports an officer within the department recorded the racist cop’s bigotry for a year and handed the material over to the U.S. Department of Justice. Among the allegations against Nucera was a 2016 arrest in which he used racially motivated excessive force. According to the criminal complaint, the 33-year police veteran reportedly assaulted a Black teenager after arresting him and another young man for allegedly attempting to leave a hotel room without paying.

After the arrest, Nucera reportedly slammed the teen’s head into a metal door jamb.

“I’m f**king tired of them, man,” the 60-year-old was heard saying at the scene. “I’ll tell you what, it’s gonna get to the point where I could shoot one of these motherf**kers. And that n**ger b**ch lady, she almost got it.”

According to the complaint, Nucera was a fan of regularly employing racial slurs and inciting hateful, violent commentary towards the Black community.

“The n**gers are like ISIS, they have no value,” Nucera said to a fellow officer according to an affidavit. “They should line them all up and mow ’em down.”

He was also said to use police dogs to taunt Black people. If convicted, Nucera could face up to 20 years in prison.

DEA Chief Chuck Rosenberg to Quit Over Trump

Acting Drug Enforcement Administration chief Chuck Rosenberg is stepping down, citing his increased disillusionment with President Trump. Rosenberg, who was appointed by President Obama in 2015 and previously served as former FBI Director James Comey’s chief of staff, reportedly did not take kindly to the president telling police officers in July, “please don’t be too nice” with people suspected of committing a crime. That comment spurred a response from Rosenberg, who said in an email to all DEA employees that “we will always act honorably.” According to the New York Times, Rosenberg said he did not want to be considered for the job of DEA chief on a permanent, and did not want to work in the Justice Department altogether.

Steve Bannon OUT as White House Chief Strategist

Steve Bannon is OUT as White House chief strategist.

The official word is that he resigned, but there are also reports suggesting he was ‘pushed’ out by Trump.

via NY Times:

President Trump has told senior aides that he has decided to remove Stephen K. Bannon, the embattled White House chief strategist who helped Mr. Trump win the 2016 election, according to two administration officials briefed on the discussion.

The president and senior White House officials were debating when and how to dismiss Mr. Bannon. The two administration officials cautioned that Mr. Trump is known to be averse to confrontation within his inner circle, and could decide to keep on Mr. Bannon for some time.

As of Friday morning, the two men were still discussing Mr. Bannon’s future, the officials said. A person close to Mr. Bannon insisted the parting of ways was his idea, and that he had submitted his resignation to the president on Aug. 7, to be announced at the start of this week, but it was delayed in the wake of the racial unrest in Charlottesville, Va.

Mr. Bannon had clashed for months with other senior West Wing advisers and members of the president’s family.

But the loss of Mr. Bannon, the right-wing nationalist who helped propel some of Mr. Trump’s campaign promises into policy reality, raises the potential for the president to face criticism from the conservative news media base that supported him over the past year.

Mr. Bannon’s many critics bore down after the violence in Charlottesville. Outraged over Mr. Trump’s insistence that “both sides” were to blame for the violence that erupted at a white nationalist rally, leaving one woman dead, human rights activists demanded that the president fire so-called nationalists working in the West Wing. That group of hard-right populists in the White House is led by Mr. Bannon.

Bye Bannon!

This book builds on his previous books and helps the reader understand how critical intellectual capital is to the key to success in the twenty-first century. Ron pulls from the greatest business thinkers and economists,?from Drucker to Karl Sveiby as well as current company success stories to fund his rich gold mine of proof.
