One Step Closer to Crowning USA Surfing Jr. Champions

San Clemente, California (June 18, 2018) – The drama and excitement is building at USA Surfing Championships – the contest that determines which surfers are selected to be USA Junior National Surf team members and compete internationally. After some of the best conditions and performances in the history of the event, we are one step closer to the decisive final heats.

This year’s competition included exceptional performances with a 10-point ride Monday by U16 Gabriela Bryan of Hawaii, who consistently scored 9’s throughout the day. There were three 9.93 waves on day two, Saturday – all in the girls U14 division by Caitlin Simmers (Oceanside), Luana Silva (Hawaii), and Sawyer Lindblad (San Clemente).

The level of competition is intense. In a chess match of a U16 boys heat Taro Watanabe (Malibu) won his round 2 heat with an aggressive 9.83 wave and Jett Schilling’s (San Clemente) explosive maneuvers earned a 9.07 ride helping him clinch second. Kade Matson (San Clemente) dominated double divisions, with athletic, first-turn progressive maneuvers and unwavering composure that allowed him to stay fresh and sharp with every round. “Competing at Lowers offers surfers a very special experience,” said Andrea Swayne, USA Surfing President. “It is one of only two surf contests allowed at Trestles Lowers – one of the world’s best surf breaks. The level of surfing at this elite event provides a preview of the pipeline of talent USA Surfing is building as we take on the new task of developing not only professional caliber surfers, but Olympians. And judging by the performances so far, our young athletes are rising to the occasion.”

Championships competition features the latest technologies and talents used at the most elite levels of surfing. The heats are announced by crowd favorites Todd Kline and Ryan Simmons, 5-panel WSL/ISA judges use electronic scoring and replay, priority with LED display and head judges – all with years of experience analyzing surfing around the world. USA Surfing head coach Joey Buran said the unprecedented performances are encouraging, but also make decisions about selecting members for the USA Surfing junior national and development teams extra difficult. “All our hard work, training and preparation shows in these performances at Championships,” Buran said. “For many surfers, this week’s performances reflect the strength, grit, composure and athleticism they’ve been cultivating for months and even years. It’s the journey that builds the greatness. It all builds, progresses and hopefully peaks at the right time. It’s a puzzle that we have to put together and the pieces are always changing.”

USA Surfing will announce its 2018 national travel team who will compete at the ISA World Junior Surfing Championships in Huntington Beach October 27 – November 4, in early July, following the June Championships. The U.S. Junior team won gold at the 2017 ISA World Junior Surfing Championship in Hyuga, Japan, where 306 surfers, from a record-breaking 41 nations across all continents of the globe, competed. Anticipation is growing for the Olympian vs Olympic Hopefuls Expression Session that will take place on the last day of competition. This first-of-its-kind exhibition heat will take place prior to the finals heats at Lowers with multi-sport Olympic medalists in a heat with surfing’s Olympic hopefuls.

NBC is sending a crew to capture the action and take B-roll that contextualizes the road to surfing’s debut in the 2020 Olympic Games. The exhibition heat will provide surfing’s Olympic hopefuls a chance to share their love of surfing with Olympians from other sports and learn from them about the experience of the Olympic stage. Some of the gold medalists from other sports will be surfing for the first time. Olympic athletes in the exhibition heat will include gold medalist Slope Style snowboarder Red Gerard, silver medalist Big Air snowboarder Kyle Mack, silver medal Snowboard Cross snowboarder Lyndsey Jacobellis, water polo gold medalist Kaleigh Gilchrist and Winter and Summer Paralympic gold medalist Alana Nichols. In addition, snowboarder Brock Crouch who is recovering from injuries sustained in an avalanche will join fellow athletes on the beach. Crouch was on the USA Surfing junior team. Surfing Olympic hopefuls will include WSL World Tour surfers Kolohe Andino, Griffin Colapinto, Courtney Conlogue and Caroline Marks, who grew up participating in USA Surfing events.

That Roseanne Spinoff Just Got One (Big) Step Closer to Happening

Take heart, Roseanne fans! In the wake of Roseanne Barr’s racist tweets and ABC’s subsequent cancellation of the eponymous sitcom, it seemed as though a spinoff simply wasn’t possible. How can you have Roseanne without, well, Roseanne? The matter was made especially tricky by the fact Barr has a writing credit on the series. But — and it’s a big one — new intel suggests that a spinoff isn’t just possible, it could happen soon.

More: Roseanne Officially Cancelled at ABC Because Tweets Do Have Consequences

Per Deadline, lots of legwork behind-the-scenes has culminated in a promising point: Barr ready to sign off on the potential spinoff. While the terms and conditions of said agreement have not been released, it would reportedly involve Barr receiving a one-time payment from the production company Carsey-Werner. In exchange for that payment, Barr would relinquish her rights to any profits from the spinoff.

In other words, she couldn’t come back at a later date and sue ABC for or Carsey-Berner over the spinoff. The alleged agreement would mean Barr would no longer have any creative or financial rights where the series is concerned.

So where does that leave the potential spinoff? According to Deadline, ABC will have seven days from the time that Barr signs the agreement to decide whether they will pursue a pickup.

More: Is aRoseanneSpinoff Without Rosanne Barr a Possibility?

Per Roseanne’s own tweet on June 15, one could surmise that the erstwhile actress wants to put this chapter behind her and let her co-stars find success without her.

Near or Far: Do the Benefits of Living Closer to Work Outweigh the Cons?

benefits of living closer to work - image from streeteasy campaignThere’s an amusing Streeteasy ad campaign in a lot of NYC subway stations right now, with Venn(ish) diagrams like this one, and I thought it might make for an interesting discussion here. Why did you choose to live where you do? What do you think the benefits of living closer to work are — vs. farther away? Do you prefer to have some separation between work and home? In general, what was the most important factor for you in choosing where to live — living closer to work, being in a good school district, having an amazing apartment, or something else? We’ve talked before about how where you choose to live can be one of the most important money decisions you make, as well as how to decorate your home and even when to buy a home, but we haven’t really talked about the pro and cons of living closer to work or farther from work.

For my own $ .02, I learned about my own preference for NOT living closer to work through a mistake I made many moons ago, in my single-lady lawyer days. I had always been a Manhattan girl, and after unsuccessfully looking to buy a studio in the city, I decided to move to Brooklyn for a year and see if I liked it. Well, I hated it. The one-bedroom on Clark Street that I chose was an upgrade over my former studio at 15th and 5th, to be sure, but that was where the pros stopped. The radiators ran way, way too hot… the kitchen was depressingly small and old… and I had a whole theory about how dating was way, way harder because getting to different boroughs was easier with one person based in Manhattan. (I even remember feeling like a Brooklyn/Brooklyn relationship was difficult if your subway trains didn’t align!)

The most surprising thing I learned was that I absolutely HATED everything about the work-life balance that came with the apartment. The commute that had looked amazing on paper — there was a subway entrance across from the apartment, and it was only one stop away from the office — meant that I didn’t “see” anything while I was going to and from the apartment. I didn’t pass stores or restaurants on foot on either side of the subway, and I was really surprised by how much I missed that casual, window-shopper type of experience. Plus, I’ve always hated the subway and at the time spent way too much of my budget on taxis to work — but on nice nights, if I got out early enough I had loved walking home. Both of those options were difficult in my new location. I had to go out of my way by several blocks to find a cab if I wanted to get to work, so the subway really was easier. If I walked home on nice nights, I had to cross the tourist-filled Brooklyn Bridge, and once again I wasn’t passing any shops or restaurants. Even on the weekends, I was surprised by how much my apartment depressed me because it was in such a residential area. I felt that “just popping out” for food, shopping, a walk, or whatnot was much more depressing.

It’s important to note that, at the time, work was really the only thing in my life. I went out on the weekends with various friends, of course, but my daily routine was completely centered around going to the office. I realize that having kids or even a serious partner would have made the work-life balance different — I could “see” things on the walk to daycare or school drop-off, I could have regularly looked forward to meeting my partner near his office or apartment, etc. — but as that point in my life, living closer to work was not for me. (Fun fact: I moved back to the city after one year… and promptly met a Brooklyn boy, who is now my husband. Of course.)

What do you think, readers? Do you prefer living close to or far from work? Do you see more disadvantages or advantages to living closer to work?

Big Names In Print: a closer look at Albert Irvin, Joe Tilson and Tess Jaray editions

Get up to speed on the latest collectable artworks by a range of respected international artists at artrepublic. In the spotlight this week, a trio of British artists: Albert Irvin, Joe Tilson and Tess Jaray.

Founded in Leather Market in 1967, Advanced Graphics is now one of London’s longest running print studios. Specialising in screen printing and woodblock printing, over the past 50 years the studio has worked with some of the biggest names on the British art scene – think Royal Academicians such as Patrick Caulfield and Albert Irvin – to produce print editions. What happens when this technical heritage meets talent? Some pretty special art, that’s what.

Capture something of the ‘experience of being in the world’ via the energetic abstract expressionist artwork of Albert Irvin. Colourful and joyful, the British artist’s paintings showcase a highly gestural quality – they are absolutely packed with movement and life. This is not something that was lost in translation between the artist’s paintings and his silkscreen print editions; if anything the quality and vibrancy of the colour palette is even crisper and more distinct in the latter.

You can see exactly what we mean with ‘Ranelagh’ and ‘Sangora’ – both from limited editions of 225 and 150 respectively – which showcase an almost Pop-Art-like sensibility. However, rather than locate themselves in a particular era of art history, their bold, bright colours and patterns awaken our senses and bring us firmly into the present. Waking up to see this on the wall would boost your mood instantly we reckon!

Other artists draw on the past to create images in the present. Originally associated with the British Pop Art scene of the 1960s and 1970s, Joe Tilson brought more to the movement than his training from St Martin’s and the Royal College of Art – he also prided himself on the practical construction skills he gained at Brixton School of Building before the Second World War.

This focus on the structural is reflected in the block-coloured stacked form at the centre of Ziggurat, which was inspired by the massive stepped stone structures built in ancient Mesopotamia. Tilson simplified the form back to a tiered pyramid shape to create this limited edition print (in a run of 300), which is one in a series of the same name. Each image in the Ziggurat series – which has been featured in exhibitions at galleries that range from Britain’s Tate to New York’s MoMA – explores the same central form but with a different approach each time. With its bold blocks of colour, this Tilson print is a Pop Art era classic and a shrewd addition to any modern art collection.

Another influential figure in the British art scene with a preoccupation with the built environment, painter and printmaker Tess Jaray has spent much of her career investigating the effects of geometry, pattern, repetition and colour on space. The terrazzo floor designed by Jaray for mainline train station London Victoria, is just one example of how the artist has made her mark on familiar public spaces.

Make a mark on your own space with one (or both) of Jaray’s silkscreen prints, such asCitadel Darkand Citadel Light’ – currently both available at artrepublic. Each from a limited edition of just 25, these artworks show exactly how Jaray has brought the Pop Art sensibility into the 21st century. Channelling her fascination with geometric forms that recur in architecture throughout history, Jaray creates soft zig-zag lines in the vertical panels of the two prints, confounding the viewers expectation of flat harmony.

Introduce a little of the British Pop Art aesthetic into your home with these rare limited editions. Drop by our Brighton gallery and speak to one of our art advisors or, if youre not local, check out these artists’ work online at artrepublic.com.

America Just Got a Lot Closer to Seeing a Speaker Nancy Pelosi

Aaron P. Bernstein

Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court released a new congressional map for the Keystone state on Monday afternoon and in the process gave Democrats a likely major boost in their efforts to win back control of the House of Representatives this fall.

The redrawn map—which was offered as a legally-mandated fix to the heavily gerrymandered prior lines—reshapes the state such that, according to Cook Political Report’s Dave Wasserman, there are now eight Hillary Clinton districts and ten Donald Trump districts. President Trump won the state in the 2016 election by less than one percentage point. There are currently five seats held by Democrats and 12 by Republicans, with one vacant.

The map is likely to be the most significant mid-term election development until the actual election itself, seriously enhancing the likelihood that Nancy Pelosi regains her gavel as Speaker. For that, and other reasons, it is also likely to draw a legal challenge from Republicans in the state.

A Closer Look at J.W.Anderson’s Collaboration With Converse

After first appearing as part of his show at Florence’s Pitti Uomo back in June, official images of J.W.Anderson‘s collaboration with Converse have now been released. The joint pack contains four different takes on the Chuck Taylor All Star, with two featuring an all-over print of the J.W.Anderson logo, while another comes in blue/red/green glitter. As well as the All Stars, the collection features a black low-top sneaker and a more experimental green and black sneaker which, notably, is considerably more hi-top than your average Converse. At the moment there’s no official confirmation of an exact drop date, but the J.W.Anderson Logo Converse are set to release some time in September from the designer’s web store, while the Glitter Converse will be releasing at some point in December.

If that’s piqued your interest, as well as collaborating with Converse, J.W.Anderson has also been working with Uniqlo on a full collection that includes everything from winter-ready outerwear to bags and accessories.

A Closer Look at Know Wave’s Limited T-Shirt Capsule for the ‘GOOD TIME’ Motion Picture

NYC-based creative collective Know Wave has officially released its exclusive capsule for the adrenaline-packed motion picture GOOD TIME. The A24-distributed movie — directed by acclaimed filmmakers Josh and Benny Safdie — has launched this Friday with critics already hailing it as a quintessential New York film. NYC-born directors making a film about the notorious concrete jungle while joining forces with a local imprint? That’s as New York as it gets.

The movie centers on the ever-unruly Constantine “Connie” Nikas (played by Robert Pattinson) who sets out on a crime-ridden journey in hopes to bail his brother Nick (Benny Safdie) out of prison. All in all, it’s an exhilarating ride from start to finish and portrays the Big Apple in its most raw, real, and drug-induced form.

Take a look at the special collection of wares above and head over to Know Wave’s official website to purchase available pieces. Before you head out to watch the film, check out the emotionally-gripping trailer for GOOD TIME below. Also, stay tuned for an extended feature on the movie which will go up on HYPEBEAST soon.

Brandy Wants You to Know She WAS Closer to Whitney Houston Than ‘Oh Girl’ Monica Brown + Says She Doesn’t Follow Her [Photos]

It’s Whitney Houston’s birthday and you love muffins know the day could NOT go by without some foolishness involving Brandy and Monica.

Thankfully, they aren’t arguing about which one was Whitney’s true goddaughter.

It started out with Monica wishing Ms. Houston a happy birthday on Instagram.

Not too long after, Brandy followed-up with a post of her own — making sure to let us all know that Whitney passed her the torch (whatever that means).

…and then Brandy gave us another one.

… and then another one.

Because of their history, fans of both Brandy and Monica were quick to accuse Brandy of being petty with her posts & word choice.

She had time today, because she clapped back at her critics (and threw a little more shade at Monica in the process).

‘Oh girl’? Hm.

Hangout Snapshot: Get a Closer Look at Zella Day

This spot the next several days will feature upcoming artists who were performing at the 2015 Hangout festival in Gulf Shores, Alabama, from May 15-17.

It kicks off with Zella Day, a 20-year-old singer-songwriter from Pinetop, Arizona, who now resides in Los Angeles. Her debut album, Kicker, will be released June 2 on Pinetop Records/ Hollywood Records.

Zella Day selfieJust a short walk from the beach, Day stopped by to chat and provide some up close-and-personal information (and even took a selfie, left) in this quick-hitting Q&A before her set on the Palladia Stage on May 15:

Claim to fame: What got you here?
ZD: My record that I’m releasing June 2. I released an EP last year in October. And it’s just been a slow build. So my music got’s me here.

Beach essential: Shades, swimsuit or volleyball?
ZD: Swimsuit, because I need a tan more than anybody here probably. (laughs) My whole body’s covered up for a reason.

Secret you’re finally well-adjusted enough to share?
ZD: I have a whole record full of them. They’re going to be coming out on June 2. All of the dirty laundry aired.

Where do you go from here (literally or figuratively)?
ZD: Well, I go home tomorrow. And I’m a week at home. I just got done with a month and a half of touring. And I’ve got more festivals and then some headlining shows. I’m just kind of adjusting myself to the new pace of life for me.

Shore thing in Gulf Shores (what’s on top of your to-do list)?
ZD: Well, I’m going to spending my time at the festival, obviously, so I’m going to be seeing Foo Fighters later. Probably get me a swimsuit and go see the Foo Fighters.

Zella Day 1

You’re on the clock to make an Unabashedly Shameless Plug for 10 seconds: Go!
ZD: So I’ve got my new record coming out June 2. It’s called Kicker. I’m playing a headlining show at the Troubadour in L.A. for the record release on June 3. So if you can make it, make it out there. And besides that, just listen to my music. I’m releasing a lot of it, and music videos. I’m working really hard right now. So, hopefully, it’s gonna connect.

What’s the inside story behind your name?
ZD: Zella is from the 1840s. My parents got married in Jerome, Arizona. And when they were getting married, they were looking for baby names. And there was a book of the town’s history in Jerome, and they were scouting locations for the wedding. And they just walked into a museum and they were looking through this book. And one of the main coal miner’s wives was named Zella — 1842. There’s actually a song on the record called “Jerome.” That’s about the ghostly woman behind my name.

What’s your biggest fear about the water?
ZD: Being held under. I don’t like feeling like I can’t make it to the top.

Flip-flops, sneakers or Crocs?
ZD: (laughs) Well, Crocs are best of both worlds. So Crocs for sure.

Surf, paddleboard, para-sail, deep-sea fishing or snorkeling?
ZD: It would have to be between snorkeling and surfing. Because I really like both. I live in L.A. and I lived in Long Beach before. I’m from Arizona but I grew up snowboarding. So when I moved to California, surfing was just kind of a natural transition. So I’ve been out in the water a bit. But then I also love snorkeling. I’ve been to Indonesia, snorkeled in Indo. They’re both really fun.

Your greatest athletic feat?
ZD: I went to Spain and played in the Donosti Cup for soccer. I was 14 and I was really serious about soccer. And we actually won second place. So I went to Europe, played soccer on the Arizona state team. And I broke my ankle shortly after that, so that kind of ended my soccer career.

What do you have that Skrillex and Diplo don’t?
ZD: (laughs) A guitar?

If you could do to dinner and a movie with another Hangout performer this weekend, who would it be, what would you see and why?
ZD: Well, I’m sharing a trailer with Jenny Lewis. And so I feel like she’d be kind of fun to eat shrimp cocktail with and maybe go see a film. I don’t know what film we would go see. I don’t even know what’s out in theaters right now. I’ve been on the road too much. I’ve been really into Pulp Fiction and Natural Born Killers. So maybe we would eat shrimp cocktail and watch Natural Born Killers on the beach. Me and Jenny Lewis.

Along with Zella Day, Day 1 of Hangout featured a number of terrific performances dominated by women with a fashion flair. Here’s a look at some of the best:
