‘Dave’ Could Be Your New Best Friend When it Comes to Avoiding an Overdraft

Overdrafting ranks up there with bumper-to-bumper traffic and running out of coffee: the worst.

Making a $ 10 mistake — to pay $ 35 in fees? How do they get away with this stuff?

Unfortunately, no matter how much you complain, you’re probably not going to change bank policy.

But you might have another solution: Dave.

No, not your coworker, or your old roommate, (though the founders do want you to think of Dave as a friend). It’s an innovative app that could prevent you from overdrafting.

The Big Deal With Overdrafting

When Jason Wilk, Dave’s co-founder and CEO, was in college, he overdrafted constantly.

“All the founders experienced overdraft fees,” says Wilk. “We saw it as a recurring problem.” Not only for themselves, either; they frequently saw overdraft woes pop up in the news or on Reddit.

And it’s no wonder. Overdraft and ATM fees cost customers at America’s three biggest banks $ 6.4 billion in 2016, according to an analysis by CNNMoney.

“The average expense amount that triggers an overdraft fee is $ 25,” Wilk says. “There needed to be a product that helps people maintain their expenses and avoid those small negative pitfalls.”

So Wilk and his friends decided to create an app to alleviate the problem. Also on board? Billionaire investor Mark Cuban, who had backed a few of Wilk’s previous companies.

“[Cuban] himself used to overdraft a lot when he was trying to make it,” says Wilk. “He became our lead investor in the seed round.”

How Dave Prevents You From Overdrafting

In April 2017, Wilk and his co-founders launched Dave, and today, the app has more than 400,000 users who each pay $ 1 per month.

Here’s a basic overview of what it does:

  • Assesses your income and spending patterns, then predicts how low your balance could get between now and your next paycheck.
  • Sends a warning if you’re at risk of overdrafting due to an upcoming predicted expense.
  • Calculates your cash flow at the end of each month: how many dollars came in and how many dollars went out (via your checking account).

Or, as Wilk says, “We’re thinking about it as Mint.com [a money-management tool] for the paycheck-to-paycheck world.”

How to Get On Board With Dave

To use Dave, you must first download the app (iOS/Android) and connect your checking account. Dave will then assess your income and expenses and attempt to establish patterns.

Say your cable bill is paid on the 11th of each month. Once Dave sees that, it will automatically set that bill up as a predicted expense.

You can also take matters into your own hands by turning your regular purchases into predicted expenses. If you go to lunch with the girls every month, for example, add it in so Dave will account for it.

If, at any point, your balance is going to dip dangerously low or a predicted expense may cause you to overdraft, Dave will warn you through a notification on the app.

“Because you’re taking control and adding predictions, you’re going to know well ahead of time what your chances are of overdrafting,” says Wilk.

And if an overdraft is looming, you can take preventive measures: You can pause your Netflix subscription, eat ramen for a week or transfer some money from your emergency fund.

Dave Also Offers Interest-Free Paycheck Advances

Or, if you’re out of options, you can ask Dave for an interest-free advance on your next paycheck.

You can request any amount up to $ 75. Then, when your next paycheck hits, Dave will withdraw the amount you borrowed — without any interest charges or fees.

The $ 75 limit is purposeful, according to Wilk. It’s enough to cover the essentials, but not so much that it could lead to irresponsible behavior or unnecessary reliance.

“There’s no place in the country you can go and borrow that little amount of money,” says Wilk. “Payday products allow you to access a large amount of money, but that can get people into a tough cycle of always relying on it.”

Not to mention, payday loans can have an interest rate of nearly 400%, whereas Dave’s advances don’t have any.

Though Dave doesn’t check your credit, you’re eligible for an advance only if you have some form of recurring income.

If you deposit money sporadically, the app won’t be able to discern when your next paycheck is due to arrive — and therefore won’t be able to offer you an advance.

“When we can’t find anything that’s reliable, the app gets harder to use.” says Wilk. “It’s very much geared toward people who have an idea of when they’re going to get paid — and that’s a big part of what gets you approved for the $ 75 advance.”

Tip Dave, Plant a Tree

Dave’s advances, as noted, are free — but if you’re grateful for the services, you can “tip” the company. For each percentage you give, Dave will plant a tree in Africa, according to its website.

For example, let’s say you borrowed $ 50. Tipping $ 5 would equate to 10%, so Dave would plant 10 trees.

Overall, Wilk says, he and his co-founders simply want Dave to be like your friend (your friend who looks like a bear and plants trees).

“Friends let you borrow around that $ 50 to $ 75 amount, don’t charge you interest and warn you about bad things that are going to happen to you,” he says.

For that “friendship,” Dave charges $ 1 per month with no contract.

If you mostly use credit — or rarely overdraft — that’s probably not worth it. But if you’re a chronic overdrafter who pays up to $ 450 in fees each year, it very well may be.

Man Who Threw Banana Peel At Dave Chappelle Is Now Suing Him

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — A man who threw a banana peel at Dave Chappelle during a 2015 performance in Santa Fe, New Mexico, is suing the comedian and a man presumed to be his bodyguard.

Christian Englander’s lawsuit filed Friday contends the presumed bodyguard struck Englander twice as he was being restrained.

Englander, who is white, has said he had no racial motivation when he threw the banana peel at Chappelle, who is black, but was angered by something Chappelle said during the show.

Englander faced charges of battery and disturbing the peace, but they were dropped because Chappelle was unwilling to participate in the prosecution.

Englander’s claim he was assaulted wasn’t mentioned in the police report, but his lawyer said it would have been raised if Englander went on trial.

Chappelle’s publicist Carla Sims did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

Messages From the Wild: Dave White’s Baby Gorilla

Artist Dave White’s animal kingdom has evolved once again – after his Chimp print swiftly sold out.

Various animals from Dave White’s menagerie/ studio have graced the artrepublic gallery recently, and now we are delighted to be able to share the artist’s limited edition Baby Gorilla print with you.

Available in small and extra large, the highly gestural giclee print – taken from the original oil and watercolour painting – depicts the expressive features of a young gorilla, an image that has extra pull as, on some level, we inevitably recognise something of ourselves in these primates. Not all that surprising, as they share 98.7 per cent of our genetic code (fun fact for you there!).

Baby Gorilla By Dave White

White is known for celebrating popular culture and interpreting emotive issues within his work, and this piece is no exception; more than simply depicting the cuteness of a baby animal, or hinting at the similarities between humans and gorillas, it highlights the complex theme of endangered species.

There are four species of gorillas living in the wild today, and all have either been classed as endangered or critically endangered. In painting these beautiful animals, White quite literally draws greater attention to them by confronting us with a face that we can’t (and don’t want to) look way from. It strikes us that, like the artist’s prints, baby gorillas are genuinely limited editions. How’s that for art that makes a statement?

Dave Chappelle Has A New Netflix Special Called ‘The Bird Revelation’

Netflix has just doubled its Dave Chappelle offerings to ring in the New Year.

The streaming service announced Friday the addition of a second new standup special from the comic to air on Dec. 31.

As previously reported, “Equanimity” — which takes on Trump voters — was already set to launch Dec. 31. It was filmed in September at the Warner Theater in Washington, D.C.

“Equanimity” will now be joined by “Dave Chappelle: The Bird Revelation, ” filmed Nov. 20 at the Comedy Store in Los Angeles.

The new specials expand Chappelle’s relationship with Netflix, where his original blockbuster deal in November included three specials. “The Age of Spin: Dave Chappelle Live at the Hollywood Palladium” and “Deep in the Heart of Texas: Dave Chappelle Live at Austin City Limits” debuted on Netflix earlier this year.

Meanwhile, Comedy Central is also giving viewers Chappelle for New Years. The network is airing a daylong New Year’s Day “Chappelle’s Show” marathon, featuring all 28 episodes leading up his seminal 2000 HBO stand-up special “Killin’ Them Softly.”

Rihanna’s Diamond Ball Draws Beyoncè, Kendrick Lamar And Dave Chappelle

Rihanna, center, poses with her grandfather Lionel Braithwaite and mother Monica Braithwaite (Photo by Evan Agostini/Invision/AP)

NEW YORK (AP) — At a Rihanna charity event, she will encourage you to drink heavily — so that you donate generously.

The pop star played the role of slick bartender at her third Diamond Ball on Thursday night in New York City, encouraging the audience to drink up and donate money to her foundation at the same time.

“The more you drink, the more inspired you’ll be to donate money … and help kids around the world,” said Rihanna, the founder of the Clara Lionel Foundation, which promotes education and arts globally.

The benefit raised more than $ 5 million.

Dave Chappelle worked as Rihanna’s right-hand man. He first told jokes and later joined the auctioneer onstage, even purchasing a Retna art piece for $ 180,000.

“I have the perfect wall for this,” he said.

When selling two tickets to the Obama Foundation Fall Summit in Chicago, Chappelle said he would throw in his pocket square. It jumped from $ 200,000 to $ 201,000.

It eventually sold for $ 275,000.

Jay-Z, Beyonce, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jamie Foxx and Trevor Noah were some of the A-listers who attended the black-tie event, which included a video message from former President Barack Obama. He thanked Rihanna “for the great work” she’s doing with her foundation.

“You’ve become a powerful force,” Obama said, in helping people find “hope” and “dignity.”

Rihanna launched the Clara Lionel Foundation in 2012 and named it after her grandparents Clara and Lionel Braithwaite. Many of her family members attended the event and posed for photos on the red carpet with the Grammy-winning singer.

The foundation said at the event they were among the first responders to assist those affected by Hurricane Harvey, and that they’re currently strategizing how best to support victims of Hurricane Irma. The organization has a scholarship program and an oncology and nuclear medicine center in Barbados, where Rihanna was born and raised.

“It’s exciting to come to New York for the first time. It’s the first Diamond Ball on the East Coast, and we’ve been dying to do something like this for a few years,” Rihanna said in an interview at Cipriani Wall Street. “Now is the perfect time. September is Fashion Week. Everybody is here. And we hope that they are in the mood to give back.”

Kendrick Lamar’s performance went into Friday morning, as he worked the stage excitedly with hits like “Humble,” ”Alright” and “Loyalty,” which features Rihanna (she danced in the audience). Calvin Harris, who worked with Rihanna on the hits “We Found Love” and “This Is What You Came For,” followed with a fun DJ set.

NFL player Victor Cruz, Latin singer Romeo Santos, entertainer La La Anthony and rappers Lil Kim, Cardi B., Future, Fabolous and Young Thug also attended the event.

From the auction held Friday night, Rihanna’s organization raised $ 840,000.

A necklace, featuring 16-carats of white diamonds set in 18-karat white gold, went for $ 130,000; a visit and tasting for four at the Petrus wine estate, along with lunch at the family’s private mansion in France, sold for $ 80,000; and a trip for 12 in the Maldives went for $ 100,000.

Dave Chappelle And John Mayer Pay Tribute To Charlie Murphy

John Mayer and Dave Chappelle paid tribute to Charlie Murphy on Wednesday night, following news of the comedian’s death.

Mayer, who was performing in Columbus, Ohio, brought Chappelle onto the stage with him toward the end of the show. Murphy often starred in sketches on “Chappelle’s Show,” most notably in a segment called “Charlie Murphy’s True Hollywood Stories.” Mayer and Chappelle are good friends, and the singer once appeared in a sketch on the Comedy Central series.

The musician and comedian began by sharing jokes and stories about each other, before Chappelle brought up the news of Murphy’s death.

Columbus, OH – Jamming with Dave and remembering Charlie Murphy. @daniel

A post shared by johnmayer (@johnmayer) on

“My good friend Charlie Murphy passed away this morning, and everybody in comedy is heartbroken,” Chappelle said, before asking Mayer to play a song for Murphy. He urged the crowd to put their phones away so they could “make a memory that only we have.” (Of course, at least one person didn’t listen, which leaves us with the video above — and we’ll admit, we’re grateful to see the touching moment.)

“Rest in peace, Charlie Murphy. We love you. We love your comedy. We love your stories, and we love your spirit,” Chappelle said, as Mayer began playing “You’re Gonna Live Forever in Me.”

Chappelle and Mayer are the latest in a long list of stars, including Chris Rock and Zendaya, to honor Murphy, after he lost his battle to leukemia.

Dave Chappelle Wants Comedians To Stop Making The Same Donald Trump Jokes

Saturday Night Live” is experiencing a creative renaissance and its biggest ratings in two decades under Donald Trump’s presidency. But Dave Chappelle has a message for fellow comedians enjoying the fruits of the administration’s blunders: “Trump’s kind of bad for comedy.”

Speaking with CBC on Sunday, Chappelle offered his take on the current president’s relationship with his chosen profession, agreeing that comedy has “a role to play under Trump,” but warning that there’s a risk of regurgitating the same material.

“Most comics in the states are starting to do the same jokes, just because Trump is so on everybody’s mind,” he said. “So it’ll be nice when we don’t have to talk about him that much.”

Despite his concerns over Trump’s omnipresence, Chappelle said he still believes the state of comedy today is “strong and healthy,” citing the return of some of his favorites like Chris Rock and Jon Stewart to the game.

“I think that most of these guys you see working are wildly courageous,” he explained. “It’s such a strange time, being bombarded with so much information, and I think comedy is an important valve for syphoning through all that.”

In November, Chappelle hosted the first “Saturday Night Live” episode after the election and delivered a stirring opening monologue in response to Trump’s surprise win. After joking that America actually elected “an internet troll as our president,” he recalled a recent visit to the White House for a BET event that made him feel hopeful about the country’s direction.

“I saw how happy everybody was, these people who had been historically disenfranchised, and it made me feel hopeful, and it made me feel proud to be an American,” Chappelle said. “So, in that spirit, I’m wishing Donald Trump luck. I’m going to give him a chance, and we, the historically disenfranchised, demand that he give us one too.”

For more from Chappelle, you can watch his two comedy specials that premiere on Netflix this month.

Dave Chappelle Reprises ‘Chappelle’s Show’ Characters For ‘Walking Dead’ Spoof On ‘SNL’

Chappelle’s Show” is back. Well, kind of.

Dave Chappelle reprised some of his hilarious comedy sketch show characters, including Tyrone Biggums and Chuck Taylor, to spoof “The Walking Dead” on “Saturday Night Live.”

Chappelle said people had asked whether he’d be bringing any of the characters back, ever since he was confirmed as the guest host of “SNL.”

At first I wasn’t going to,” he told the audience, but revealed he changed his mind after seeing the episode in which Glenn is killed.

“I know, it was devastating. I love that show and Glenn was like one of my favorite characters. so I was like crushed,” Chappelle added. “So, in that spirit and with that in mind, I hope you enjoy this.”

Can We Say So Long, but Not Goodbye, to Dave?

2015-05-18-1431992060-4153180-DavidLetterman_Huffington.jpg

While the show business community and the audience for David Letterman are in the process of saying thanks and goodbye, I’ve had a recurring thought: why must we say goodbye? Many of us are going to have a difficult withdrawal from our dose of Dave, especially the comedy community, and I’m just hoping his absence from our lives is a brief one.

I first met David Letterman back in 1977 when the late comedian George Miller introduced me to him. I was just a kid and a newcomer and I was starting to work as a comedian. One day Robin Williams invited me to open for him and David Letterman at the Bla Bla Cafe on Ventura Blvd. During my set the audience was so quiet I thought they were all deaf and needed sign language, until I finally got a good laugh on this joke: “I was at a dance club and I asked one of the girls to dance with me. She was, as they say in my country, extremely well fed. While slow dancing, she came in real close to me and whispered in my ear, ‘what do you use in your country for protection?’ I said, ‘a knife or a stick.'” I was so pleased to get any response that I said, “That’s my closer, good night” and bolted from the stage. Later that night during Robin’s set, he was feeling badly for me and brought me back onto the stage and started teaching me Shakespeare. That got a lot of laughs, the audience really enjoy it.

After the show, David gave me suggestions on how to fix some of my jokes. One joke he fixed, wound up getting laughs whenever I performed it afterwards. The way I told the joke was, “Everybody always gave me advice on how to pick up girls in America by spending a lot of money on them. So I met a girl and I said, ‘I would like to buy you a piano.'” David said I would get more laughs if I added a response from the girl. He said that she should reply “I would rather have an organ.” I did that joke Dave’s way, and always got lots of laughs. David was like that with everybody. He was very creative and giving, always offering other comedians help.

In 1979 when the comedians went on strike because we weren’t getting paid, David was already making money, but made it a point to help out. I remember one night we were on the picket line and David and Tom Dreesen showed up; I found out later that David guest hosted that night for Johnny Carson, but he showed up to help his fellow comics further their cause.

If it wasn’t for comics like David Letterman, Tom Dreesen, George Miller, Jay Leno – and many others – the comedians today would not be getting paid at the established clubs. I always remind the comedians that those individuals were the pioneers, who struck to get them their due. For those interested in that history, I recommend the excellent book written by Los Angeles Times editor Bill Knoedelseder, called I’m Dying up Here.

David never stopped helping comedians. Like his mentor Carson, Dave helped expose and promote stand-up comics on his show. In fact, he exposed more comedians on his TV show than any subsequent late night host. He never forgot his roots, and he never forgot those who performed with him on his rise. Tom Dreesen, Jeff Altman, Johnny Dark, Paul Mooney, George Wallace, Jimmie Walker, John Witherspoon, and so many others, were all on The Late Show many times, because Dave knew it was an important way to get them known.

David truly is a person filled with care and compassion. When David found out about George Miller’s diagnosis with leukemia, he arranged to secure a two bedroom apartment with a 24 hour nurse for him. David paid for everything. After a few years, Miller’s health deteriorated and near the end, Dave – even with his busy schedule – managed to fly in from New York to spend a few hours with his comic buddy. I joined Dave and Tom Dreesen and Gary Mule Deer at George’s apartment and watched Dave give him encouragement and positive reinforcement. A few months later, George died from a blood clot in his head and I had to pass on that tragic news to everybody including David. He was devastated.

David is a rare person, extremely funny, and extremely generous with a big heart. Not only does he help comedians, his charity work is unmatched and practically unknown. He has a foundation for underprivileged kids and nobody knows about it. I only found out about it from one of my Comedy Camp kids.

If I headed any network, I would never let a comedy treasure like him retire. David is still at the top of his game and has so much more to give. If he doesn’t want to work nightly anymore, perhaps one of the networks can get him to do a few specials each year. He is a national treasure and a “doctor of the soul” whose sense of fun has cured many of us from our doldrums. I’ve never seen all of the Laugh Factory comedians in agreement on any one thing, but they all seem to agree on David’s importance and contributions to comedy. It seems that these feelings are also shared by comics all around the country.

So my mantra is–so long Dave, enjoy the break, but we ain’t saying goodbye.

Dave Coulier Got Married And His Wedding Was A ‘Full House’ Reunion

Congrats to Dave Coulier and Melissa Bring!

The couple tied the knot in a beautiful outdoor ceremony in Paradise Valley, Montana on July 2, and the guest list was full of familiar faces (because you know Joey Gladstone would never get married with out Danny Tanner and Jesse Katsopolis by his side).

Yes, Coulier’s wedding was practically a “Full House” reunion with former co-stars Bob Saget, Candance Cameron Bure, John Stamos, and Andrea Barber all in attendance. And while even the show’s creator Jeff Franklin was there to witness the 54-year-old actor’s big day, there were a few members of the Tanner family who were missing. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, who shared the role of Michelle, were not present for the festivities, nor was Jodie Sweetin, who played Stephanie.

While the whole cast didn’t make it out to the wedding, it looks like those who did had a wonderful time:
