When Your Colleague Offers Your Firstborn to Sweeten the Deal

Reader N wrote in with an interesting problem: her colleague offered to throw in her firstborn to sweeten the deal. HiLARIOUS, right? Here’s her question:

Here’s an interesting dilemma, recently a senior male colleague and a new client were haggling over price when my colleague said jokingly, “to sweeten the deal we will throw in [my name]’s first born” (I am in my 20s and have no kids), they all laughed. It has since become a running joke, to refer to my first born in all pricing discussions with this client. I feel uncomfortable whenever it happens, but don’t want to seem high-maintenance. Should I raise it with my colleague?

YEOUCH. What in the… We’ve talked before about how to deal when you work with sexist pigs  and how to deal with sexist jokes from offensive clients, which may or may not be appropriate reads for you if circumstances warrant. I think it’s entirely possible here that he doesn’t mean anything by it (it can always be worse!), and that this is just a Case of the Clueless Dude, promoting the patriarchy unwittingly. I think your feelings are legitimate, though, and I do think you should shut it down. Gently, maybe, but firmly. You are not, after all, the maiden or victim in some fairytale story, and that is kind of the worst thing to me here — it calls up all those old ideas of gender roles. (In fact this is kind of unflattering to all parties here – if the client is an older woman is he saying, you remind me of a fairytale witch? If an older man, a troll under a bridge or firebreathing dragon?) Nope. The next time he brings it up I’d take him aside after the call, privately, and suggest it’s time to move on from that particular running joke. You could be even more direct and, ahead of the next client call, let him know that you’re no longer amused at the trope and everyone should move on. (Or: you could just get a mug like the one pictured! It’s available at Etsy for $ 15 (affiliate link).) I suppose you could take a jokey turn and address it yourself during the next time he (or the client) brings it up — alas, that’s no longer on the table! I committed my firstborn myself when I made a deal with that genie for complete and total power, sorry! But being direct with him is probably the best thing here.

(As a side note, I must say whenever I hear this kind of thing I think, GAH, who wants a baby to settle a debt, and go on a Seinfeld-ian rant in my head about how impractical the payment of a baby is. Like, have they seen babies? Do they know how fussy they are? And YOU try dealing with the hassle of hiring an appropriate caregiver…)

Readers, take it away — how would you deal with this senior colleague? If someone offered to sweeten the deal with YOUR firstborn, would you be uncomfortable? How would you deal?

Psoriasis: How to deal with the frustrating, flaky skin condition

Plus where to get the help and support you need to manage your condition

psoriasis

Counting eczema among its unsightly friends, psoriasis is another uncomfortable skin condition that can leave its sufferers feeling incredibly self-conscious.

It’s estimated that some 125 million people have psoriasis worldwide, according to the International Federation of Psoriasis Associations.

But you may not be 100% sure if you have it, or what exactly it is (we’re guessing that’s why you’re here, anyway).

We asked Dr Justine Kluk, Harley Street dermatologist, to answer the most common questions about the skin ailment below.

What is psoriasis?

‘Psoriasis is an inflammatory condition of the skin that affects approximately 2% of the population,’ Dr Kluk explains. ‘The outer layer of our skin is constantly generating new skin cells and replacing old ones.

‘But in psoriasis, this process is sped up significantly and occurs over days rather than weeks. This increase in cell turnover leads to the typical symptoms that we see.’

What are the symptoms of psoriasis?

‘Psoriasis causes salmon pink patches to appear on the skin. These often have silvery scale on the surface. Sometimes, they cause soreness, discomfort or itching and sometimes they don’t,’ explains Justine.

‘Any part of the skin can be affected, however the elbows, knees, belly button, scalp and ears are some of the most frequently affected sites. Psoriasis can occur on genital skin, between the buttocks and in the armpits, where the patches are typically smooth, red and shiny rather than flaky.

‘If the nails are affected, pits or ridges can appear on the surface, or the nails can become thickened and discoloured. In certain individuals, psoriasis can also affect the joints by causing swelling, pain and stiffness and this is known as psoriatic arthritis.’

psoriasis

What causes psoriasis?

There are a fair few factors that can contribute to a person developing and having the condition.

‘Your genes play an important role, meaning that if one or more of your parents or siblings has psoriasis you will have an increased chance of developing it compared to someone who doesn’t have any affected family members,’ Dr Kluk tells us.

‘Environmental factors, such as stress, smoking, infection and certain medication, such as beta blockers, can also act as triggers.’

Are there psoriasis treatments?

Unfortunately, like a lot of skin conditions, there is no ‘cure’ per se for psoriasis. The good news is that there are lots of things you can do to keep its prevalence under control

‘The choice of treatment really depends on how severely you are affected and includes creams containing a steroid or vitamin D, tablets and injections that modify the immune system, and phototherapy, which is a form of outpatient light treatment carried out in hospital Dermatology Departments,’ our doctor explains.

‘Most psoriasis sufferers will benefit from frequent and liberal application of a moisturising cream or ointment, and scalp symptoms can improve with the regular use of a coal tar-based shampoo or scalp lotion containing coconut oil,’ she adds.

‘If you are suffering with psoriasis and are finding it difficult to put your feelings into words and get the right support from friends, family or even your doctor, charities like The Psoriasis Association or the website skinsupport.org.uk from the British Association of Dermatologists are a good place to start.’

Tidal Problems: Kanye West And Jay-Z Deal With Legal Issues

A judge has dismissed parts of a proposed class-action lawsuit alleging fraud against Kanye West and Tidal. It was ruled that the case can continue on, as the claim does cross “the line from conceivable to plausible,” the judge noted, according to Billboard.

Kanye fan Justin Baker-Rhett claims in his 2016 lawsuit that West and Tidal tricked the public into subscribing to the streaming service through false claims it was the only place to hear West’s highly anticipated seventh studio album, The Life of Pablo, only to see it available on other platforms less than two months later.

On Friday, U.S. District Court Judge Gregory Woods granted parts of Tidal’s motions to dismiss Baker-Rhett’s proposed class-action lawsuit, but refused to toss the whole thing.

Per Woods’ ruling, the lawsuit will move forward as it relates to a tweet by West on Feb. 15, 2016, when he said the album “will never never never be on Apple. And it will never be for sale… You can only get it on Tidal.” Six weeks later, “The Life of Pablo” was available through Apple and other services.

With note to Tidal’s struggle to turn a profit, the lawsuit alleges that the claims about West’s highly anticipated album helped boost the streaming platform’s subscribers from 1 million to 3 million within the first 10 days of its release. And because West was a celebrity shareholder with a 3 percent ownership stake in Tidal, it asserts he was an agent of the company when he made his statement. Which was described as a “reaffirmation” of a tweet from Tidal’s Twitter account the day before announcing the company was bringing The Life of Pablo “to fans around the globe” with exclusive streaming.

Judge Woods deemed that statement true on its face, since the album was exclusively streaming the album for six weeks.

“These allegations, together with the complaint’s description of the business relationship between Mr. West and Tidal, are sufficient to nudge this claim across the line from conceivable to plausible,” wrote Woods.

Last year in a motion to dismiss, West argued that his “never never never” statement was technically true, since The Life of Pablo was “updated and remixed numerous times, with different vocals, lyrics, and arrangements” since its initial release and the only place to get hear that original version was on Tidal. Woods responded to this assertion, saying, “Mr. West’s argument is tenuous, and certainly does not pass muster in the context of a motion to dismiss.”

The judge did, however, throw out parts of the lawsuit claiming that West and Tidal violated New York state law since Baker-Rhett’s transaction with the streaming service did not take place in New York. Woods also dismissed claims based on Tidal’s tweet about the album’s exclusivity and claims that the streaming service falsely concealed plans about the album’s limited exclusivity from fans.

In accordance with the judge’s ruling, Baker-Rhett’s attorney Jay Edelson told Pitchfork they would amend their pleadings and would likely be bringing “a bunch of state-by-state class actions.”

Jay-Z in other new legal action surrounding Tidal, Jay-Z has filed suit against his lawyers for allegedly overcharging him in the purchase of the streaming service.

According to The Blast, the rapper was sued by two Swedish law firms who each claimed that Jay-Z’s S. Carter Enterprises only paid part of what was owed.

One firm, Roschier, claims they are owed $ 294,000 while another, SEB, says they are still owed $ 304,383.

According to court documents obtained by The Blast, Jay-Z claims the firms each “performed certain services for which they have been paid yet seek additional compensation.” He also alleges that any money they say they are owed came from their “own culpable conduct in over billing” him.

Jay-Z also argues that the lawsuit should be tossed because they did not “perform under the contracts they now seek to enforce.”

S. Carter Enterprises is seeking to have the suit dismissed entirely.

Google May Be Looking To Do More Than Crack China Market With JD Deal

This article first appeared in Data Sheet, Fortune’s daily newsletter on the top tech news. To get it delivered daily to your in-box, sign up here.

In the political world long-held alliances are fraying, at least those among the United States and many countries it once called friends.

In the business world, especially in technology, fascinating alliances are forming. Witness the tie-up announced Monday by Google and JD.com, the No. 2 Chinese e-commerce player. U.S. media predictably played the move as a bid by Google, which invested $ 550 million in NYSE-listed JD, to inch its way into a China market that has blocked it for nearly a decade. JD will join Google’s shopping platform, and Google will have done a solid for a Chinese company, presumably pleasing Beijing.

But look closer, and the deal speaks volumes to important alliances. JD’s major corporate shareholders include Tencent, which counts JD as an extension of its retail-technology strategy, and Walmart

wmt

. The U.S. retailer, in turn, has been noodling on alliances with Google for the better part of a year.

The alliances at play are worthy of a 21st century Bismarck of global commerce. Google and Walmart are allied against the arch-foe of Western businesses everywhere, Amazon

amzn

. Tencent and JD

jd

are allied against China’s dominant e-commerce player, Alibaba

baba

.

Could Google

googl

, prevented from selling ads in China, view Tencent as its entr?e into the Chinese search market? Tencent operated a search engine for years but sold it to Sogou, a small competitor to Chinese search leader Baidu. Does this create an opening for Google?

It’s a tangled web. And an interesting one too–especially given the state of the political world, including the tenuous conditions of U.S.-China relations

Spier Suits for $275, Free Shirt Deal at TheTieBar, & More – The Thurs. Men’s Sales Handful

Sales that deserve some attention heading into the weekend or a bit earlier. Might not be some massive once a year event, but still worth a look. Those are what make up these handfuls. Five of the better sales, one for each finger, are below, plus bonus sales if need be. Included are a few picks worth pointing out.

Spier & Mackay: Save $ 107 when you buy 2 Suits

Spier & Mackay

Suits that are regularly $ 328 – $ 398 per, now drop to $ 275 – $ 344.50 per. Yes, it’s a kinda funky discount, but it applies to both their regular Australian wool suits (drops them to $ 275 per) or their fancier Italian wool suits (drops those to $ 344.50 per). Not bad considering they’re ALL half canvas construction and available in slim or contemporary fits. It is Spier & Mackay though, so expect sizes to be scattered. And yes, it does work if you mix and match an Aussie wool suit with one of their Italian wool suits.

Massdrop: AE Chukka 2nds – $ 179.99 FINAL | Loake Pimlico Chukka – $ 204.99 FINAL

AE & Loake Chukkas

It’s a gall-darned chukka party over at Massdrop right now. The issue… is that they’re both final sale. No returns. It’s a pre-order model, so, they’re not keen on taking stock back. So there’s a real risk there with shoes. Especially if they’re 2nds like the AEs. Made in the USA for the Allen Edmonds and make in the UK for the Loakes.

Todd Snyder: 30% off Select Items

Todd Snyder

This is a weird one, because some of the items are 30% off, some are a little MORE than 30% off, and some are a little less. Beats me. But hey, it’s nice to see at least a little mid-season discounting from Todd Snyder. Sizes are scattered on the suits. They’re made in Canada from Italian fabrics though, so if you land one, lucky you.

Allen Edmonds: Warehouse Sale in their Clearance Section

Hat tip to Eric J. for the heads up on this. I haven’t seen prices like this on AEs in a good long while. Yes, there’s some funky designs in there, but suede strands? Just in time for the warm weather? Yes please.

TheTieBar: Free Dress Shirt w/ Purchase of $ 150+ w/ BREEZY

The Tie Bar

The Combo Pick: THREE Dress Shirts for $ 140 + Knit Silk Pointed Tip in Navy  = $ 165 AND you get a free fourth shirt

Doubling up the discount here. Confirmed that this should work from the good folks at TheTieBar. If you want to stock up, grab three of their pretty darn good dress shirts for $ 140 (usually it’s $ 55 per, or, the bulk deal is 3 / $ 140). Then add something small, like one of their new-ish pointed tip silk knit ties. Perfect for summer. That trips the $ 150 balance and you end up with a free shirt. You’ll have to manually add that 4th shirt to your cart, since at checkout they just drop $ 55 off your bill once you nip past $ 150. So if you don’t want a tie, by all means, just go for four shirts.

BONUS  J. Crew: 30% off Select w/ SHOPTOIT

J. Crew Unsuit

The Pick: J. Crew’s Un-Suit Jacket & Matching Pant – $ 175.60 ($ 266)

Last day for this. Full range of picks over here, including some wheelhouse wool suits. No, you don’t need to buy the entire suit to get the savings. Just want a sportcoat? Totally fine. Looking for a pair of slim lightweight pants for summer, but don’t need the jacket? You can do that too. Head here for a full review of these suits.

In defence of Brigitte Nielson: why having a baby over 40 actually isn’t that big a deal

One older mum offers her advice to Brigitte Nielsen who is having a baby aged 54.

brigitte nielson

So, Brigitte Nielson’s having a baby at 54. Congratulations, Brigitte! And welcome to the club for ancient mums. I’ve been a member for a while. I had my first child, Lucia, at the extremely average age of 34. Divorce and remarriage ensued, however, so it turned out that I had my second, Daisy, at 42. That already seemed pretty past it but wait for it, there’s more… Because I went on to have my third daughter, Matilda, at the grand old age of 45.

The chances of conceiving naturally – which Matilda was, in case you were wondering, which I know you were – were miniscule at that age. Using your own egg, even with assisted fertilisation, the odds are only 1 per cent (yes, you read that right. One. Per. Cent). The chances of staying pregnant were also slim – 60% of pregnancies at 45, I read fearfully, ends in miscarriage.

happy time ❤ positive vibes #happyness #positivevibes

A post shared by Brigitte Nielsen (@realbrigittenielsen) on

But we made it and now, aged 50, I am the oldest mum in the classroom. There are more of us than ever, though – numbers of mums over 40 have doubled in the last 20 years. So Brigitte, here’s what you need to know:

1. While your friends are having grandchildren and/or affairs, you will be pushing a buggy around Co-Op (or Hollywood in your case, but you get the picture). The upside of this is that everyone will think you are younger than you are. The downside is that pushing a buggy demotes you to second-class citizen no matter what your age – although at least you do have somewhere to hang your shopping.

2. At a time when you might be expecting to focus on yourself – retrain as a landscape gardener, launch a start-up yoga app or write your long-awaited first novel – you will be learning a new skill. That of being very, very silly. This morning I had to pretend Matilda is a puppy called Fluffy who barks once for yes, twice for no, while Daisy imagined she was a cat called Mittens; I also had to talk to Matilda’s pet worm, called, um, Wormy. I know. It’s insane.

3. Exercise takes on a new meaning. Walking becomes meaningless at best, torture at worst, as you have to slow down to tortoise pace to accommodate the ladybird your child just coaxed onto her finger. You will make up for the lost calories chasing your child around with their knickers/tights/coat/shoes/hairbrush/toothbrush/flannel, however.

family getting larger ❤ #me #family #brigittenielsen #babybump

A post shared by Brigitte Nielsen (@realbrigittenielsen) on

4. You will lose some of your old friends who are discovering a second youth and partying too hard to be seen dead with you – quite reasonably, they will think you are too boring to hang about with any more as you have to go to bed at 9.30pm and believe that everything your child says is amazing and bears endless repetition (‘She was singing Frozen and she said “Let the strawberry jam” instead of “Let the storm rage on” – can you believe it???!!!’)

5. You will be tired. Yes, even more tired than if you were younger.

6. You will become obsessed with your own mortality – the thought that you will die before you’ve seen them all right in their lives is unbearable. This does mean you will be healthier – I now swim, run and cycle, don’t smoke and attempt to drink sensibly (although all the above does slightly drive me into the arms of Mr P. Grigio most nights, I do admit) in a bid to keep the Grim Reaper at bay.

7. There’s always an excuse to watch puppy, kitten and piglet Youtube videos, however, which is good.

Oh, and one last thing Brigitte. I don’t know if you get nits in Hollywood but if you do, Hedrin is your best bet.

Good luck.

The Obamas Finalize Multiyear Deal To Produce Films And Shows For Netflix

Netflix finally announced its deal with the Obamas to produce a series of high-profile films and series under the former first couple’s own production company.

Although details of the deal are still under wraps, Netflix said that the former couple has signed a multiyear agreement to produce films and series to be made available on the streaming platform to its more than 118 million global subscribers. The Obamas have also established Higher Ground Productions as the entity under which they will produce content for the company, the release said.

The Obamas will produce a diverse mix of content, including the potential for scripted series, unscripted series, docu-series, documentaries and features. These projects will be available to the 125 million member Netflix households in 190 countries.

“One of the simple joys of our time in public service was getting to meet so many fascinating people from all walks of life, and to help them share their experiences with a wider audience,” said President Obama. “That’s why Michelle and I are so excited to partner with Netflix—we hope to cultivate and curate the talented, inspiring, creative voices who are able to promote greater empathy and understanding between peoples, and help them share their stories with the entire world.”

The New York Times first reported about the deal in April, and although the format and number of episodes are yet to be decided or disclosed, the report stated that President Obama’s plan is to highlight inspirational stories instead of using the platform for response to President Donald Trump.

One potential show idea, the Times said, was for President Obama to moderate conversations on topics that dominated his presidency, from healthcare, voting rights, immigration, foreign policy to climate change. The program could also feature topics Michelle Obama championed as the first lady. The couple could also lend their brand and endorsements to Netflix programming that align with their beliefs and values.

Still unclear is how much the couple will be paid and whether it will come close to their $ 65 million book deal. The exclusive content would be made available on the streaming platform to its more than 118 million global subscribers.

For Netflix, the Obamas’ deal is a part of a broader strategy to develop more original content as the streaming service competes with Apple, Amazon, and traditional broadcast networks. Late last month, Netflix announced it was going to spend as much as $ 8 billion on original shows this year alone. Not only does Netflix spend more money on non-sports content than any streaming provider, it also spends more than many traditional TV media companies.

Apple and Amazon, which both own their own streaming services, have reportedly “expressed interest in talking with Obama about content deals.”

Whether it’s that end of the day feeling of “gaaaah I have so much more to do,” that “looming doom” feeling that always preceded finals or other big career events, or other forms of overwhelm, what do you do to calm yourself and move forward? How do you deal — particularly if you don’t have time to join a kickboxing class or otherwise get serious physical activity?

I am a work in progress on this front, as well, but here are some of my tips for how to deal with overwhelm — I’d love to hear yours!

  • For end-of-day overwhelm: write down three things that you absolutely need to get done first thing tomorrow. If you have a minute or two before you run out the door, clear your space and put the first thing you need to focus on in the middle of your workspace, so you’re ready to hit the ground running.
  • For looming doom overwhelm: Breathe. Meditate, if you can. Make a great “you can do this” playlist (so many great suggestions from readers on this post about girl power songs). Don’t let your stress dreams freak you out too much. One trick from my school years: focus on the end date. I would enter the finals period with so much stuff to do and read and write and knowledge to shore up and would say to myself, “I have no idea how it’s going to get done, but I’ve always always gotten it done in the past and done well, and two weeks from now it will all be done again.”
  • For too many balls in the air overwhelm: Reassess! Do you really need all of those balls in the air? Do they have to be YOUR balls, and your airspace? Delegate where you can, or kick tasks to good stopping point so you can take them out of the air for the moment — it helps to focus here on tasks (the next step in the project is X) instead of the project itself.

Readers, do you deal with overwhelm on a regular basis? What are your best tips for moving forward despite your overwhelm?

How can you deal when you're overwhelmed at work or in life? We're rounding up our top tips for three particular kinds of overwhelm, but there are more: end-of-day overwhelm, "looming doom" overwhelm, and "too many balls in the air" overwhelm.

Sprint’s 55+ deal gets you two lines of unlimited for the cost of one Verizon line

Sprint Unlimited plan vs Verizon

It’s no secret that Sprint and T-Mobile undercut their competition on price — Sprint once set up an entire fake store to make the point — and one of the constant differences between Verizon (or AT&T) and the two smaller carriers are the frequent deals. If you pay attention, you can often get Sprint or T-Mobile service for significantly less than the sticker price, and some of the best deals are reserved for special groups like members of the military, or seniors.

The latter group is who Sprint is targeting with a new 55+ plan, which offers two lines of unlimited data, talk, and text for $ 70, or $ 35 per line. Given that Verizon’s cheapest Unlimited plan starts at $ 75 per month for one line, and AT&T’s cheapest unlimited plan is $ 65, it’s hard to argue that this isn’t a good deal.

5 Ways to Deal if You Think Robocallers Are the Spawn of Satan Himself

Fortunately, robots haven’t taken over yet, but they have infiltrated some of our most coveted possessions: our cell phones.

If you’ve been interrupted midtext by an obnoxious robocall, you’re not alone.

Americans received 3.4 billion robocalls in April, or about 10.4 calls per person affected.

And because the U.S. Court of Appeals recently overturned the Federal Communications Commission’s definition of an “auto-dialer,” advocates warn we may end up with more robocallers than ever.

Why Are Robocalls Bad?

Robocalls are unwelcome phone spam that can have fraudulent intentions, and you most likely never opted in to receive them.

Many robocalls are illegal, according to Federal Trade Commission guidelines. More so, many people are on the National Do Not Call Registry and still receive them daily.

In 2016, Americans lost an estimated $ 9.5 billion in robocall scams.

The scams use all sorts of bait tactics, from promising to lower your student loans or offering you discounted vacations, to threatening to bring police to your door for not paying taxes.

Our inclination to ignore unknown numbers can cause us to miss calls that actually matter, like flight or school cancellations, pharmacy pickups and appointment reminders.

How to Protect Yourself From Robocalls

We’ve covered ways to save your sanity from robocalls by not answering the phone, blocking spammy numbers and trolling back, but as the calls increase, so do your options.

Talk to Your Phone Company

Last year, the FCC enabled phone companies to block robocalls from numbers that can’t make outgoing calls, invalid numbers, unallocated numbers or those not assigned to a provider.

Many carriers provide free or relatively inexpensive services to alert you of potentially fraudulent calls.

Verizon has Caller Name ID, Sprint offers Premium Caller ID, AT&T has two security apps, and T-Mobile has Scam Block and other call protection services.

Let Your Phone Do the Work

Some phones have brand-specific apps that alert you to potentially fraudulent calls.

Samsung offers a Smart Call app that tells you if the incoming number is a known robocaller or possibly spam.

Google has a phone app that will turn the screen bright red for spam callers and sends the calls directly to voicemail. It should be available worldwide on Pixel, Android and Nexus devices. Google 1, Spam 0.

Use Third-Party Apps

For a monthly or annual fee, you can enlist the help of an app that will aid you in your escape from the robot callers.

RoboKiller, Hiya, Nomorobo and YouMail seem to be the most popular ones.

Report Robocallers

First and foremost, you can file a complaint with the FTC online or by calling 888-382-1222. Or you can report robocallers to the FCC online or call 888-225-5322.

The Better Business Bureau also has a Scam Tracker service where you can find and report scam calls and businesses.

Additionally, you can forward any spam text messages to 7726 (or SPAM). Your wireless service provider will then report the spam number.

Don’t Say Yes

If you mistakenly pick up a call or think it might be a local friend due to neighborhood spoofing techniques, don’t engage. Just hang up.

You might even pick up a local number and get a person asking you why you called them, and get baited into a spiel. Or it could be a robot with an exciting offer. Don’t press 1 for an operator or to get off a list. Don’t say yes. Don’t pass go. Don’t collect $ 200.

What Are Your Rights Against Robocalls?

You have some, but they are constantly changing as the cat-and-mouse game between us and the robocallers continues.

The Telephone Consumer Protection Act makes auto-dialers and solicitation calls to cell phones without prior consent illegal and prevents telemarketers from calling outside of 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., among other things.

Computer auto-dialing is cheap and can generate millions of calls per day. Block one and another pops up. Shoot, I almost changed my phone number, but like Liam Neeson in “Taken,” their particular set of skills will enable them to find you.

If your mobile or landline phone number is on the Do Not Call Registry, then the call violates the TCPA.

You could reach out to a consumer rights lawyer and file a lawsuit against those who violate the TCPA; however, the penalties are minimal and sometimes the real source is nearly untraceable.

Going forward, the FCC plans to seek public comment on how auto-dialers should be defined and will take action based off the feedback, according to The New York Times.

Hearings, committees and other robocall blocking bills and acts are also in the works as legislatures grapple with solutions to protect consumers from the blatant abuse.

Until the calls stop, it looks like we have a serious case of rebellious robots on our hands.

If you think about it, project managers are the silent heroes of companies and organizations. They bear the burden of just about any project the company decides to carry out, and they handle everything from planning to budgeting to team relations to the actual execution. Without them, it’s almost guaranteed that the company will fall to pieces.

Although project management is mainly about planning, executing, and closing all sorts of projects, that’s not all there is to it. There is an exact science behind building an effective project management system, and there are frameworks to follow if you want to achieve maximum efficiency — like Six Sigma. Implemented by companies like Amazon, Ford, and General Electric, it’s perhaps the most popular methodology of them all, and for good reason. Read more…

FASHION TIPS:

‘I Expect to Remain CEO for the Foreseeable Future’ Says Elon Musk After a Colossal Compensation Deal

Here’s what Tesla Inc. shareholders just bought for $ 2.6 billion: a stronger guarantee that Elon Musk will stick around for at least the next decade.

Investors on Wednesday approved what may be the largest compensation deal in history for its chief executive officer, pegged on ambitions to turn Tesla into one of the world’s largest companies as it ventures beyond solar panels and electric cars. If successful, the award could end up being worth more than $ 50 billion — a sum so large it might just ensure that Musk’s array of other passions and esoteric side projects won’t steal too much time from his work at Tesla.

“I expect to remain CEO for the foreseeable future,” Musk said during last month’s earnings call with analysts. But he didn’t rule out handing over the CEO responsibilities if a suitable successor would appear, allowing him to focus on “design and engineering, which is what I like doing best.”

Musk is also the CEO of Mars-bound Space Exploration Technologies Corp. and has embarked on several other projects of late, including tunnel digger Boring Co. and a brain-computer interface startup called Neuralink. The new award — which was approved at the firm’s special meeting in Fremont, California — requires Musk remain at Tesla either as CEO or become executive chairman and chief product officer.

Tesla said in a filing about 73 percent of the votes cast in person or by proxy at the meeting were in favor of the award, excluding those owned directly or indirectly by Musk and his brother, Kimbal.

Profit Ahead?

Shares traded higher following news of the vote. The stock closed up 1.9 percent in New York. A spokesman for Tesla declined to comment.

The pay plan helps ensure Musk will remain at Tesla at least until 2028, but several questions loom. The award contains a number of audacious goals and no detailed plan of how to get there, including when the manufacturer will turn its first-ever annual profit. Additionally, a series of executive exits in the past year has left Tesla without a clear No. 2 — a potential concern even if Musk stays front and center.

This quarter alone, Tesla has lost Jon McNeill, president of sales and service; its accounting chief Eric Branderiz; and Susan Repo, corporate treasurer and vice president of finance. Going back a full year, Tesla has also lost executives including Chief Financial Officer Jason Wheeler; Chris Lattner, an Apple Inc. hire who left after leading Tesla’s Autopilot engineering team for less than six months; Kurt Kelty, a battery executive; and Diarmuid O’Connell, vice president of business development.

Jamie Albertine, analyst at Consumer Edge Research, said he sees Tesla needing to hire a chief operating officer or a new head of service “at some point in the near future.” Musk said on the earnings call last month that McNeill’s department would report directly to him and that “there are no plans to search for a replacement,” even as some investors fear he’s spreading himself too thin. In 2016, Musk said he was working so hard, he kept a sleeping bag in a conference room adjacent to Tesla’s production line in Fremont.

Billionaire Bait

The award, which won’t vest unless a set of ambitious financial goals are met, had been cheered by some large Tesla investors who said it would help the CEO drive the business forward. Critics, including the two largest proxy advisers, said it was too costly and questioned why Musk, a billionaire who has about half his wealth tied up in company stock, needed more equity to stay motivated.

The board needed majority approval to make the grant, which likely is the largest one-time compensation deal ever awarded. Tesla had said Musk and his brother, who’s a company director, wouldn’t vote their shares.

Under the new plan, Musk will earn one-12th of the options every time Tesla hits a pair of goals: one tied to its market value and the other linked to either revenue or earnings excluding certain charges. For Musk to get all the options, Tesla would have to become worth $ 650 billion — more than Facebook Inc. — and produce more revenue than Procter & Gamble Co.

Tesla has said in regulatory filings that Musk’s award could yield him more than $ 50 billion if all goals are achieved. Some investors have said the package aligns with their interests, signaling they don’t mind if Musk gets wealthier, as long as they also see big returns.

Large shareholders including Baillie Gifford & Co. and T. Rowe Price Group Inc. signaled ahead of the vote that they would probably support the package. Spokesmen for Baillie Gifford and Chinese internet giant Tencent Holdings Ltd. were not immediately available to comment. T. Rowe Price and shareholder Fidelity, which holds almost 10 percent of Tesla stock, declined to comment.

For more on Elon Musk, see Fortune’s video:

Potential Dilution
California State Teachers’ Retirement System (Calstrs), the second-largest pension fund in the U.S., said it did not support the plan, citing concerns about potential dilution and an absence of profitability goals. Large stock awards can be costly for investors in two ways: They can increase a company’s expenses and they dilute the stakes of existing shareholders.

Still, Calstrs is appreciative of Musk’s “visionary leadership,” Anne Sheehan, director of corporate governance at the fund, said in an emailed statement.

Ross Gerber, CEO of Gerber Kawasaki Wealth & Investment Management in Santa Monica, California, which holds Tesla shares, said he voted yes.

“You can’t be a Tesla shareholder if you don’t believe in the company and Elon Musk,” he said in an interview. “The true shareholders of Tesla are all in on Elon.”

What to Put On Your Wedding Registry (And: How to Deal When Your Wedding Registry is Public)

Today we have a great question from reader K, who wants an open thread about what to put on your wedding registry — and makes the interesting point that her wedding registry will be public. Here’s her question:

Would LOVE it if you would consider doing a “wedding registry” advice/crowdsourcing post! I am registering now, and am a senior lawyer & manager in-house in big tech, living w fiance but wanting to upgrade our dishes etc. I’m sensitive to the fact that whatever I register for will be visible on the internet to opposing counsel, my reports and clients, and even regulators etc. that I deal with on a regular basis (who I KNOW google me). What do we need? And what do we need to know?

Such a good question, K! For my $ .02, I really suggest you think about the kind of life you and your partner want — not just what you think you want. You go to Macy’s or Bloomingdale’s and you suddenly feel like, well, of COURSE we need $ 5000+ worth of crystal and china… but do you feel like washing it by hand or chancing it in the dishwasher? How many of your friends do you actually trust with an $ 80 wine glass — particularly after he or she has had a few? We registered for a lot of stuff that was, I think, overly fancy for us and our shared lives (those links go to my patterns) — and that was before the kids came. These days we’re down to a few unbreakable martini and wine glasses and eating off unbreakable Corelle plates I’ve had since college. You could say, “ah, but the kids will grow up!” — but by that point my mother may have tried to downsize her fancy plates and barware to my possession, to say nothing of the fancy crystal and china she inherited from her mother or MIL.

I’m not saying this stuff is frivolous or unnecessary — but I do think I did a poor job of picking my own registry items. So I’d LOVE to hear what readers have loved on their registry — and what you’ve seen done when the couple says, eh, we’ve got what we need, thanks! Some fun newer registry options if you haven’t already seen them include Zola, Blueprint, and more — you can register for bigger ticket items like furniture, home remodeling, or vacations — and you can facilitate group gifting as well. The NYT also wrote recently(ish) about wedding registries for charity. Readers here (and elsewhere, like on the Knot) seem to roll their eyes at these nontraditional registries a lot, though, so know your situation, including your own family and friends as well as your partner’s. Another option that always exists, of course, is to tell your guests “we want your presence, not your presents!” — since, of course, wedding-related travel is already expensive.

Married readers, what did you LOVE from your registry? If you didn’t really need a ton of stuff, how did you handle it? For those of you who were wary about having a public wedding registry, how did you handle it?

Psst: you can also check out our recent discussion of how to plan a wedding when you work long hours, as well as all our tips on how to handle wedding etiquette at work.what to put on your wedding registry if you already have everything - image of wineglasses Relatedly: we’ve also discussed when we REALLY set up house (in which I shared my story of splurging on nice dishes for myself well before any wedding (or partner) because I liked ’em).

How Huawei forced Trump to block the Broadcom deal ever by doing nothing

Broadcom Qualcomm Deal

Broadcom’s hostile Qualcomm takeover plans hit a massive wall on Monday: Trump. The president issued an order to block the $ 117 billion Qualcomm buyout, effectively killing what could have been among the biggest tech deals in history.

It all happened over national security issues, and it all has to do with Huawei, a giant Chinese corporation whose ties to Beijing are a cause of concern among intelligence agencies. The best part about it is that Huawei did nothing to block the Qualcomm deal. Well, other than advancing 5G technology development at a rapid pace.

Report: Obamas to Sign Deal With Netflix

Mark Wilson

Were any further proof needed that Netflix really has taken over the (media) world, it could be found in its latest alleged signing: President Barack Obama.

The former leader of the free world—who has kept a remarkably low profile since Donald Trump defeated his party in the 2016 election—is reportedly in “advanced negotiations” with Netflix to produce a series of shows for the streaming service, which has more than 100 million global subscribers.

According to a report in the New York Times, Obama and his wife Michelle will not use their shows to engage or react to Trumpism (that’s what Twitter, where Obama has 100 million followers, is for) but to showcase “inspirational stories.”

Get Your Gallon Tubs of Mayo and $167 in Freebies With This Sam’s Club Deal

Party in the club tonight.

By club, I mean Sam’s Club. By tonight, I mean all year. By party, I mean discount.

You feel me?

For a limited time, LivingSocial and Groupon have a $ 45 deal cocktail that includes a new one-year Sam’s Club Membership, $ 10 electronic gift card, $ 25 Vudu credit, free rotisserie chicken, free yeast rolls and free chocolate chunk cookies. Sounds more like a party in my stomach.

But wait — there’s another $ 30 option that includes a new one-year Sam’s Club Membership and a $ 10 electronic gift card.

Take note that if you buy the $ 45 option by March 22, you also get an additional $ 115 in instant savings on various items for 30 days.

How to Get the Sam’s Club Deals

If you don’t have one already, you’ll need to sign up for a Groupon or LivingSocial account. The offer is the same on both websites.

Once you register, select and purchase either the $ 45 or $ 30 offer.

After the purchase is validated, you will receive an email with membership and redemption instructions.

Once you complete the redemption process, you’ll receive your membership number, which you can use to shop online or in the mobile app. However, you will not get a physical membership card until you visit your local Sam’s Club.

There is no clear-cut time and day when this deal disappears, but both Groupon and LivingSocial say “Deal Ends 3 Days.” So that would be some time on Feb. 26. I suggest acting sooner rather than later to avoid missing out on this one.

Who Can Get the Sam’s Club Membership Deal?

Guess what? You don’t have to party alone. Each offer includes a free membership card for your spouse or another household member. Cheers to that.

Both deals are for new Sam’s Club members only and are not valid for anyone with a current membership. Also excluded are those who had a Sam’s Club membership that expired Aug. 1, 2017 or later.

The deal is good at more than 590 Sam’s Clubs locations in the U.S. Puerto Rico clubs are excluded from this deal.

Don’t Forget About the Fine Print

With every good deal comes fine print. For this one, you can only buy one deal per account.

The biggest catch is that your annual membership will automatically renew every year. In addition to an automatic renewal, Sam’s Club will charge you whatever the renewal fee is at that time, not the discounted rate. Currently, this membership costs $ 45, so if you buy the $ 30 deal, there’s a good chance you’ll pay at least $ 15 more at renewal time.

There’s more fine print to consider before purchasing, but as someone who just bought the $ 30 deal, I think the overall savings are totally worth it.

I don’t know about you, but there’s about to be a party in my pantry.

Stephanie Bolling is a staff writer at The Penny Hoarder. She may or may not throw a party this weekend.

Sweetheart of a Deal: CVS Offers Free Heart-Health Screenings in February

Here’s a fun fact. Our hearts beat about 2.5 billion times over the course of our lives, according to Harvard Medical School.

That’s a lot of work from such a small organ, so how about giving it a little love?

Just drop in to any CVS Pharmacy MinuteClinic on February 7, 14, 21 or 28 for a free heart-health preventative screening to see how your ticker is doing.

You don’t need an appointment to get screened, and you can view wait times on the MinuteClinic website or app.

You will need to fast before your visit to get accurate results.

During the visit, you’ll find out your:

  • Total cholesterol
  • HDL cholesterol (the good kind)
  • Blood pressure
  • Blood sugar
  • Body mass index (BMI)

The results provide insight on your overall heart health and your risk of cardiovascular disease, the American Heart Association says.

“These screenings are especially important this year following the recent launch of new blood-pressure guidelines from the American Heart Association to improve blood-pressure control and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease,” said Angela Patterson, chief nurse practitioner officer at MinuteClinic.

CVS Health is offering these free screenings to support the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women movement.

The Go Red campaign aims to raise awareness of heart disease in women, but a CVS representative assured me that free screenings at MinuteClinics are available to people of any gender.

There are over 1,100 MinuteClinics across the country and they’re open seven days a week, including evenings.

If there’s a location near you, there’s really no reason not to stop in on any Wednesday this month for a free screening that can help keep little issues from turning into big ones.

Kaya Scodelario: ‘I put the breast pump on and was like, “Boys, you’ll have to deal with this”‘

Skins’ hedonistic teen has navigated the world of Hollywood blockbusters and become a mother – all by 24. Kaya Scodelario tells us why she’s always been a force to be reckoned with

Kaya Scodelario Marie Claire

Kaya Scodelario’s performance in the recently released Maze Runner: The Death Cure is impressive. But when you consider that she had given birth to her first child just two months before filming started and was breastfeeding or pumping milk every four hours throughout 18-hour days on set, having relocated to Cape Town for three months, it starts to feel less impressive and, well, more superhuman. Not that Scodelario sees it that way at all.

‘One day I whipped my tit out and put the breast pump on and was like [to her Maze Runner co-stars Dylan O’Brien and Thomas Brodie-Sangster], “Boys, you’re going to have to deal with this,”’ she says in her north London accent, shrugging. ‘No one was weird about it. They know me well enough to know that I would have punched them if they were.’

Normalising breastfeeding was the 25-year-old’s schtick on set of the final movie in the blockbusting action trilogy, and something she often shares with her 1.4m Instagram followers. ‘I mean, you’re doing it 17 times a day – it’s bloody normal. I’m so grateful I’m able to, when many women struggle. It was very hard with the movie, but I was insistent on having a ten-minute break every four hours to pump.’

I can’t help thinking that the assertive, ambitious and outspoken artist formerly known as Effy from Skins (the cult E4 teen drama that launched a legion of British stars from Nicholas Hoult to Dev Patel), who holds her own as the female lead of a male-dominated multi-million-pound action movie franchise, is exactly what Hollywood, post #MeToo, needs.

Kaya Scodelario Marie Claire

It’s early on a crisp winter morning when we meet at a west London studio. She explains this is coincidently where she did her very first shoot, aged 14. I have to admit, she doesn’t look much older than that today; all make-up-free with hair wet from the shower, in skinny jeans, cream Nike trainers and a huge parka that threatens to swallow her up. She has just celebrated her son’s first birthday and is enjoying a bit of ‘life time’ with her husband of two years – and ‘co-parent; there are no gender stereotypes between us’ – American actor Benjamin Walker.

‘You’re breastfeeding 17 times a day – it’s bloody normal. I’m so grateful I’m able to, when many women struggle. It was very hard with the movie, but I was insistent on having a ten-minute break every four hours to pump.’

As well as filming the final Maze Runner last year, Scodelario embarked on a world tour to promote her role in the latest Pirates Of The Caribbean movie and moved the family into a rented house in Crouch End, north London. She is currently preparing for a move to Montreal, Canada, to film US indie movie Die In A Gunfight. It’s no wonder that she’s relishing feeling the ground beneath her feet and spending time with her oldest friends. Scodelario tells me that last night she met up with the ‘little writers’ group’ she gets together with once a fortnight when she’s in London.

‘It’s nice being in a room full of women, even if you’re just drinking wine and talking about EastEnders,’ she says. ‘For us, it’s a safe place where we can discuss the stories we want to tell, and feed off each other’s energy. In ten years, there has only been about two occasions [at work] where the number of women in the room has been equal to the amount of men.’

Kaya Scodelario Marie Claire

I assume her work on money-spinning blockbusters has been strategic to give her the freedom to be choosier with future roles. If only it were that simple, she says. ‘You don’t get paid anywhere near as much as people assume, especially when it’s your first franchise. There’s a set scale, so it definitely wasn’t because of finances.’

She is, however, optimistic about producing her own films in the future. ‘In 90 per cent of the scripts I read, the woman is in her underwear for no reason,’ she sighs. Certainly playing enigmatic hot mess Effy in four seasons of Skins led to ‘a lot of auditions for “the hot high-school girlfriend” and other cringey parts’. But Scodelario stood her ground, which is especially admirable when you factor in she had no prior acting experience.

‘In ten years, there has only been about two occasions [at work] where the number of women in the room has been equal to the amount of men.’

In 2007, aged just 14, she rocked up to the Skins audition on her drama teacher’s suggestion, but was so nervous she decided not to go in. She was smoking a cigarette outside the building when she was spotted by Bryan Elsley, one of the show’s creators. ‘It set the bar high to want to play interesting, layered, tortured women,’ she recalls, but says that after the show ended, ‘there was the fear of, would that be all I could do? I wasn’t trained, and I work very instinctively. I know that good scripts and good parts do exist; so now, let’s make it happen for ourselves.’

I ask if she is surprised by the revelations coming out of Hollywood post-Harvey Weinstein. ‘I’m in awe of the women who have spoken out,’ she says. ‘People are scared of doing it in an office environment, let alone on a world scale, so it’s great that we’re having the conversation. We need to keep on having it and flushing [harassment] out, so it’s not the norm.’

Kaya Scodelario Marie Claire

Although fortunate to not have experienced sexual harassment in her career, Scodelario used the #MeToo hashtag to break her silence about abuse she has suffered closer to home. ‘It’s taken me 13 years to say #MeToo,’ she bravely tweeted in October. ‘He is still protected by “family members” in Brazil. They’ve told lies to papers to try to silence me. No more. #MeToo.’

‘It was something that I’d wanted to talk about for years but I didn’t know how to,’ she explains, adding that she felt particularly vulnerable promoting Maze Runner in Brazil, when extended family members turned up at her hotel to ‘frighten and intimidate’ her.

‘I thought I was OK and, on the surface, I was because I’d survived, but I needed to regain that power,’ she says. ‘[#MeToo] felt like the right moment. I had this support from all these women I’d never met in the online community wanting to take that power back, and that’s what it was for me personally; to say, “I’m no longer afraid of you.”’

Did her mum know what had gone on? ‘It was a one-off incident and she was incredibly there for me… so I did it for her.’ Scodelario also did it for her son. ‘A lot of people say to me, “Do you play strong female roles so that little girls look up to you?” I say, “I do it so little boys will, too.” Now I’m raising a son, I want him to look up to me. Consent is a conversation I’m going to have honestly and openly with him from a very young age.’

Kaya Scodelario Marie Claire

Despite her experience, Scodelario remains vehemently proud of her heritage. An only child, she was raised in a north London council flat by her single mother, speaking Portuguese and surrounded by Brazilian culture, food and music. ‘It’s always been us two,’ she nods. She spoils her mother when she can, most recently with a trip to Doha in Qatar, where Scodelario was speaking at Ajyal Youth Film Festival.

‘It was wonderful because we used to struggle to afford Clacton-on-Sea. Now, I can take her to amazing countries on the other side of the world and she gets treated like a queen.’

I wonder if being cast in Skins affected the pair’s you-and-me-against-the-world dynamic. ‘It definitely did,’ she says. ‘I don’t want anyone to think we’ve had a perfect relationship because that’s unrealistic. I moved to Bristol and suddenly had this new group of friends and I was falling in love for the first time [with her co-star Jack O’Connell]. That’s hard for any parent, let alone a parent whose life is their child. There were a few years when it was difficult and we had to reassess our relationship.’

Scodelario had left home properly by the time she was 16. ‘I rented a shitty little studio flat in Camden Town where people would get drunk and throw bottles at the window, but I loved it,’ she says. ‘It was the Effy years, for sure.’

When we meet, the ‘first generation’ of Skins (that’s Nicholas Hoult, Joe Dempsie and Hannah Murray, to name a few) have just had their annual Christmas get-together. ‘I cooked dinner this year – last year, Nick did it at his – but it ended up with the boys taking over and we just sat gossiping in the back,’ she says. ‘We’ve got a strong little group. We’re so close because we’re friends first. I don’t think I’ll ever find that on a job again.’

Kaya Scodelario

Scodelario is still recognised as Effy – ‘every day, every day!’ – ten years on, which isn’t surprising. Skins was both critically acclaimed and controversial, acutely observing millennial sixth-form teenagers and their antics with a rawness that was unprecedented. It wasn’t glamorous like The O.C. or worthy like Dawson’s Creek; it was daring and a little bit dirty, and no one, admits Scodelario, expected it to take off.

‘We used to struggle to afford Clacton-on-Sea. Now, I can take my Mum to amazing countries on the other side of the world and she gets treated like a queen.’

‘We were so dumb about it,’ she says with a laugh. ‘We’d go to Nando’s in a herd of about ten, then try to get into a bar despite half of us being under-age, and be shocked when people recognised us! People must have been like, “What are they doing? Is there a camera rolling?”’

She’s certainly packed a hell of a lot into her 25 years. Was Scodelario secretly yearning to settle down when she met her husband, in 2014, on the set of (yet to be released) The King’s Daughter? ‘So much of my life is unpredictable,’ she explains. ‘I can’t commit to a friend’s birthday party next week because I don’t know where I’ll be. I stress myself out about work and I want to do well… but when we fell in love, I realised what I ultimately wanted was to have that connection with someone. I didn’t want to let the opportunity pass.’

The couple were engaged after a few months of dating and married a year later. Their first kiss was on camera, so they asked the film’s producer to send them the footage to play at their wedding. If it sounds like a fairy tale and that’s because it was. A well deserved one at that.

ICYMI: Mo’Nique Provides Emails Proving Her Netflix Deal Wasn’t Good — At All [Photos]

Mo’Nique took to Instagram to share more details regarding her soured negotiations with Netflix.

As you know, Mo’Nique called for a boycott of the streaming service after they allegedly offered her a measly $ 500,000 for a comedy special — compared to the $ 10-11 million they initially offered Amy Schumer.

Since then, rumors of her bad behavior and the fact that Netflix really offered her a $ 3 million deal for several specials hit the Internet.

Mo’Nique is backing up her initial claims with screenshots of an alleged email detailing the terms of what she was offered — and they’re not good.

via Salon:

For a year following the special’s premiere, the terms would have barred Mo’Nique from taping or negotiating another comedy special with any third party.

As well, Netflix would have retained rights of first negotiation once those 12 months were upand she would only be able to tape a special with another company if Netflix passed. Essentially, this was not a contract for one show. Rather, Netflix would have owned her broadcast rights for up to two years or more.

It doesn’t end there. For the two years after the premiere of her special, Netflix asked that “Mo’Nique not perform or use the material from our special in any recorded program (audio-only or audio-visual work), then we ask for a first negotiation/first refusal right after the 24 months in the event that she does want to use the material elsewhere.” More or less, Netflix wouldn’t have just had possession of the produced show, but the content therein, forcing her to develop entirely new material for touring, which is the lifeblood of any working comedian.

All that for $ 500,000? Yeah — Netflix tried it.

Why It’s a Big Deal That USA Gymnastics Is Cutting Ties With the Karolyi Ranch

In a statement Thursday, USA Gymnastics president and CEO Kerry Perry said the organization will no longer use the Karolyi Ranch as the national team training center.

USA Gymnastics has terminated its agreement with the Karolyi Ranch in Huntsville, Texas. It will no longer serve as the USA Gymnastics National Team Training Center.

It has been my intent to terminate this agreement since I began as president and CEO in December. Our most important priority is our athletes, and their training environment must reflect this. We are committed to a culture that empowers and supports our athletes.

Since the 2000s, the ranch has hosted monthly training camps for elite level gymnasts — and in 2011, the ranch was named the official national training center for USA Gymnastics. The world and Olympic women’s teams trained there before competitions and for aspiring gymnasts, an invitation to the camp was the first step toward becoming a champion.

USA Gymnastics, the sport’s governing body, is facing extreme criticism for its handling of more than 100 complaints of sexual abuse by the national team doctor, Larry Nassar, who allegedly abused gymnasts while they attended the training camps in Houston. The athletes say USA Gymnastics did not protect them from Nassar and delayed taking action and reporting him to law enforcement even as the number of complaints against the Michigan osteopathic doctor mounted.

Simone Biles, the reigning Olympic all-around champion, revealed in a tweet earlier this week that she too suffered sexual abuse by Nassar, at the ranch, and pled in her post that “It breaks my heart even more to think that as I work towards my dream of competing in Tokyo 2020, I will have to continually return to the same training facility where I was abused.”

Nassar is currently being sentenced on first degree criminal sexual assault charges in a Michigan court. Dozens of victims are providing powerful victim impact statements detailing the sexual abuse he inflicted on them, often at the Karolyi Ranch, and asking for the judge to consider a life sentence.

USA Gymnastics’ decision to terminate its arrangement with the Karolyi Ranch is only the latest fraying in a relationship that began when then USA Gymnastics president Bob Colarossi invited Bela Karolyi to help revitalize the national women’s gymnastics program after poor finishes at world championships in the 1980s. Bela, the famed Romanian coach of Olympic champions Nadia Comeneci and Mary Lou Retton, along with his wife Martha, devised a decentralized training system in which gymnasts would train with their individual coaches but come together for a week, once a month, to train as a team under the Karolyis’ guidance. The system was a hybrid of the siloed U.S. coaching structure and the centralized eastern European strategy that seemed to produce consistent results.

It’s still not clear how aware the Karolyis were of Nassar’s sexual abuse of the gymnasts. Martha retired as the national team coordinator after the 2016 Olympic Games, and was replaced by Valeri Liukin, father of 2008 Olympic all around champion Nastia Liukin. The ranch is located in the isolated Sam Houston National Forest, where cell service is spotty and parents are not allowed. Some gymnasts have reported that Nassar was allowed into their dorm rooms at the ranch alone, at night without any supervision, and that was where much of the abuse occurred. Nassar was responsible for giving the gymnasts recovery treatments as well as helping them with injuries, and disguised his abuse as medical therapy. The Karolyis have not commented publicly on the allegations against Nassar.

But Maggie Nichols, an Olympic hopeful for the 2016 Rio team, was overheard at the ranch talking to her teammates about Nassar’s odd behavior by her coach, and that coach reported the conversation to Nichols’ parents and to USA Gymnastics. It wasn’t until weeks later that the organization reported the complaints to law enforcement, according to Nichols’ mother, who has since filed a lawsuit against Nassar and USA Gymnastics.

Then, in May 2017, a year after USA Gymnastics announced it was going to buy the ranch from the Karolyis, the organization backed out of the sale. The organization was facing heavy criticism about the way the training camps at the ranch were conducted — parents are not allowed while the athletes, often under-age minors, lived and trained for a week with little outside supervision.

With dozens of Nassar’s victims now revealing the extent to which he abused their trust and innocence, the training camp has become, as Biles noted, a constant reminder and symbol of betrayal and pain. Biles’ teammates from the 2016, Aly Raisman and Gabby Douglas, and 2012 Olympian McKayla Maroney, have all said they were abused by Nassar, sometimes at the ranch. Maroney also signed a non-disclosure agreement and confidential settlement with USA Gymnastics to not discuss her abuse claims publicly.

It’s not clear where the national women’s teams will train in the future; next month’s session has been cancelled.

, but the deal with Tencent is a first with a large Chinese tech firm.

Google has previously said that agreements such as these reduce the potential of litigation over patent infringement.

The agreement with the Chinese social media and gaming firm Tencent covers a broad range of products and paves the way for collaboration on technology in the future, Google said on Friday, without disclosing any financial terms of the deal.

Tencent oversees China’s top social media and payments app, WeChat, which has close to a billion users. It also oversees one of the country’s most popular app stores and hosts the country’s biggest gaming and livestream platforms.

Google did not disclose the scope of the new patent deal and Tencent did not immediately respond to questions about which products the patent agreement will cover.

“By working together on agreements such as this, tech companies can focus on building better products and services for their users,” said Mike Lee, Google’s head of patents.

Over the past year, Google has indicated that it was looking to increase it presence in the restrictive Chinese market, with the launch of a local AI research lab, introduction of a version of its translation app and expansion into new cities.

The company announced this month that it had invested in Chinese livestream gaming app Chushou, which is similar to Google’s own YouTube game livestreaming services.

In December, Google CEO Sundar Pichai spoke at a conference in China hosted by the Cyberspace Administration of China, which oversees censorship in the country.

There’s now a Gucci restaurant and we can’t deal

Book a flight to Florence and head straight to the brand new Gucci emporium.

Words by Lisa Walden

Gucci have opened a brilliant concept store, 50-seat restaurant and museum called the ‘Gucci Garden’ in the heart of Florence, Italy. As well as including Gucci designs from the brand’s rich archives dating back to 1921, there will also be a lively and interactive video and film experience.

Designed by Gucci Creative Director Alessandro Michele, the rooms feel like you’ve been transported to a bygone era. Expect references to plants, flowers, animals, graffitied walls and must-have Gucci items — and gosh, there’s a lot of them. ‘The garden is real, but it belongs above all to the mind, populated with plants and animals: like the snake, which slips in everywhere, and in a sense, symbolises and perpetual beginning and a perpetual return,’ explains Michele.

Take a seat on the pillowy petrol-blue sofas and order the tortellini in parmesan sauce for a treat. Food is served on pretty porcelain plates, all of which are decorated in the brand’s iconic paisley print. Cotton napkins are crisp and embroidered like a Gucci shirt, and the table setting is as charming as the clothes themselves. The tucked-away restaurant seats around 50 guests so book your table fast to avoid disappointment.

Elsewhere, the ground floor is home to one-of-a-kind creations, designed especially for the Gucci Garden. Here you can buy silk bombers, custom jewellery, brocade skirts and bespoke luggage pieces you won’t find anywhere else (items come in packaging exclusive to the store so be sure to snap them up fast). The shop will also sell stationary, postcards, plates, cushions and maps of Florence for visitors to take home.

All of Gucci’s designers, past and present, have a space in the garden. “The past is very much part of the present at Gucci, which is perfectly in keeping with Alessandro’s idea of the brand, and indeed his attitude of Florence, Gucci’s home, which he sees as a city where history is still vibrantly alive,” explains critic and curator Maria Luisa Frisa, who worked with Alessandro on the store.

Artists Jayde Fish, Trever Andrew (AKA GucciGhost) and Coco Captian (who collaborated with the brand for their AW17 collection) were invited to decorate the walls of the rooms. Large pineapples painted with the Gucci logo, pizza slices, snakes and funny faces are drawn onto the wall in a playful and youthful touch. Don’t leave without taking a look at their work either, which is situated in the room nearby. We promise you won’t be disappointed.

iPhone X deals T-Mobile vs Verizon, buy-one-get-one

The iPhone X launched in November last year with an eye-watering price tag of $ 999. The cost doesn’t appear to have hurt the iPhone X’s sales, but limited supply of the phone for the last few months have meant that you’d be lucky to just find an iPhone X in stock, let alone a sale on one.

But it’s a new year, the iPhone X is now widely available, and T-Mobile is kicking off the January sales with a doozy: Buy one, get $ 700 off any second phone, including the iPhone X. That’s not just the first deal we’ve seen on the iPhone X so far; it’s one of the highest-value deals on any smartphone we’ve seen. Verizon and AT&T just got put on notice.
