Gleyber Torres takes Derby decision out of MLB’s hands

Gleyber Torres says he’ll pass on competing in the Home Run Derby next month, and that goes down as a loss for baseball, even if everyone outside New York might not necessarily agree. “I’m not a home-run hitter,” the Yankees’ dynamic rookie told The Post on Wednesday, before his team continued its series against the…

EMPLOYMENT SEARCH UPDATE:

She Won $1.2 Million Betting $18 on Kentucky Derby Underdog Horses

Justify may have won the Kentucky Derby this weekend, but the real winner of the day is a black Texas woman who raked in $ 1.2 million on an $ 18 bet.

Yes, you read that right. Opting to remain anonymous, the Austin woman made her picks in Salem, Texas. on Saturday—some 1,100 miles away from Churchill Downs where Justify (the winning thoroughbred horse) would later win the 144th annual Kentucky Derby. According to ABC News, she not only made a Pick 5 wager at the Retama Park racetrack in Salem, she also selected the winners of all four races leading up to the main event.

She started with the eight race on Saturday when 6-year old Limousine Liberal won the Churchill Downs Stakes. She also picked Maraud to win the American Turf Stakes in the ninth race, and Funny Duck to take the Pat Day Mile race despite the 39-1 odds. She picked Yoshida in the 11th race, a 9-1 long shot who beat out the favorite Beach Patrol by a nose in the Old Forester Turf Classic. Her easiest bet was Justify, who was favorite to win at 3-1 odds.

To put her win in perspective, the co-owners of Justify: WinStar Farm, Head of Plains Partners, Starlight Racing, and the China Horse Club, bought Justify in 2016 for $ 500,000. After its win on Saturday, the horse earned its owners a $ 1.24 million payday, a 1.485 return on their investment in one day. The anonymous Texas woman’s $ 1.2 million win, however, gives her a whopping 66.7% return on her measly $ 18 investment.

“It’s extremely rare,” Rachel Bagnetto, a spokeswoman for Retama Park told ABC News. “To bet that little amount of money and win $ 1.2 million is unheard of. In fact, it’s the first time it’s happened at Retama.”

What is also rare on the day was Justify becoming the first horse in 136 years to win at Churchill Downs after not racing as a two-year-old.

Here’s a breakdown of the $ 2 million purse between the top five finishers:

First place (Justify): $ 1.24 million
Second place (Good Magic): $ 400,000
Third place (Audible): $ 200,000
Fourth place (Instilled Regard): $ 100,000
Fifth place (My Boy Jack): $ 60,000

FASHION DEALS UPDATE:

These Very Wet Kentucky Derby Fans Won’t Let a Little Rain Ruin Their Race

The Kentucky Derby quickly turned into a muddy affair as rain poured on Churchill Downs Saturday

However, thousands still came out to watch the Run for the Roses. The weather also brings in an interesting element for those betting on the race as some horses run better on mud than others.

It seems like many Kentucky Derby-goers weren’t betting on rain though, and many were clad in ponchos over suits and summery dresses. Umbrellas also aren’t allowed at the Kentucky Derby to prevent obscured views.

It’s forecast to continue raining through the 144th Kentucky Derby’s post time of 6:34 p.m. on Saturday – making a likely repeat of last year’s soggy derby in which Always Dreaming won.

Justify Breaks 136-Year Racing Curse to Win 2018 Kentucky Derby

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Justify splashed through the slop to win the Kentucky Derby by 2½ lengths on Saturday, becoming the first colt in 136 years to wear the roses after not racing as a 2-year-old.

The colt that began his racing career in February improved to 4-0 and gave Bob Baffert his fifth Derby victory. That snapped a tie and left the 65-year-old trainer trailing only Ben Jones with six.

Mike Smith earned his second Derby victory. The 52-year-old jockey crossed the finish line at Churchill Downs with only a few specks of mud on his white and green silks in the rainiest Derby in the race’s 144-year history.

Justify, the 5-2 favorite in the field of 20, ran 1¼ miles in 2:04.20.

Good Magic finished second and Audible was another head back in third.

One other record was broken at the 144th Run for the Roses — and not one anyone will be celebrating.

The National Weather Service declared it the wettest Derby on record, and the rain is still coming down. The weather service tweeted that the official rainfall measurement stood at 2.83 inches at 6:10 p.m., about a half-hour before the big race.

Rain was still pouring, and the weather service expects it to taper off slowly through the evening. A flash flood warning was issued for areas within a few blocks of Churchill Downs. Puddles of ankle-deep were scattered around Churchill Downs, and the downpours sent Derby goers cowering for cover all day long.

The Courier-Journal reported that the rainfall Saturday edged out the previous record of 2.31 inches, which held for nearly a century since May 11, 1918.

The weather service also said it was the wettest May 5 in Louisville history.

Anna Nicole Smith’s Daughter Is Adorable In Annual Kentucky Derby Showing

No matter who snags the crown Saturday, Dannielynn Birkhead and father LarryBirkhead have won for the sweetest dad-and-daughter appearance.

The 10-year-old daughter of the late model Anna Nicole Smith continued her annual tradition of hitting the Kentucky Derby red carpet with her father this weekend. Both were decked out in cream and pink outfits Saturday, with Dannielynn topping her outfit off with a headpiece perfectly suited for the festivities.

The pair also made an appearance the night before, all dolled up in formal attire for the 29th Barnstable Brown Kentucky Derby Eve gala.

In an interview with the “Today” show last year, Larry explained that he’s not interested in pushing his daughter into the spotlight.

“People call me all the time and say can she be in a movie, can she model?” Birkhead said at the time. “I didn’t care about it, so I’d say no, she’s not interested. She’s just a regular kid.”

Dannielynn has been making the Kentucky Derby rounds with her dad since 2010, when she was 3 years old. Clearly, her love of pink hasn’t changed a bit. And neither has her close bond with her dad.
