A decade-old video of Andy Dick and Ivanka Trump has resurfaced online and looks even worse with time.

Dick Goodwin, the Kennedy-LBJ Speechwriter Who Changed the Sixties–and the Country

Photo Illustration by The Daily Beast

In the summer of 1954, Richard Goodwin walked into the Harvard Law School library, ready to begin his first day as a member of the Harvard Law Review; a position all but guaranteeing a path to a life of privilege and prestige. For the son of lower middle-class Jews, it was the reward for years of intense study, with summers working as a fry cook at Revere Beach, supplementing a full scholarship to Harvard Law.

But as he prepared for the dreary work of checking footnotes from a law review article, something snapped. It was as if, he wrote years later, that he was in a prison. So he turned on his heel, drove back to Brookline, waived his student deferment, and joined the army. After his service, he went back to Harvard Law, where he finished first in his class, was president of the Law Review, and won a clerkship from Supreme Court Justice Felix Frankfurter.

Fourteen years later, two miles east of Harvard Law, Goodwin sat in his office at MIT, where he held a cushy faculty position. It was early 1968, and Goodwin was increasingly despairing of a Vietnam War that had lost all purpose, and a nation seized by racial and generational tumult. His close friend Robert Kennedy had refused to challenge President Johnson for the Democratic nomination, but Minnesota Senator Eugene McCarthy was embarked on that quixotic effort in New Hampshire.

This new dating app has an algorithm that blocks unwanted dick pics 🍆

Dating app Happii is aimed at the post-Tinder crowd looking for something more fulfilling than a random hook-up. Victoria Fell is on board.

happii

Is anyone else getting dating app fatigue? Happn feels a bit creepy, we’ve basically ‘completed’ Bumble, and frankly, the course of true love ne’er did run smooth through Tinder.

On top of this, research from internet dating site eHarmony has found that British people are set to spend £2 billion and 96 million hours on bad dates in 2018. That’s a lot of bad small talk and house red wine.

HAPPII

More of these kind of dates, please

Through this fug of love ennui, we’re very pleased to see new dating app Happii entering the market. Aimed at business professionals who are part of the post-Tinder generation, Happii is for those ‘now seeking more fulfilling dates and relationships with like-minded people that share similar values and outlooks on life.’

How does it differ? Founder and CEO Darren Newman says it’s all about individuality. Sick of ‘identikit profiles’, he designed Happii to allow users’ personalities to shine through the things they’re interested in, from their favourite music to travel experiences or the books they like to read.

Happii also ensures accurate matches by taking note of each users’ non-negotiables (including sex, location and smoking/drinking preferences) and showing five personality traits and five key interests of those matches.

HAPPII

Funfair dates are also acceptable

As usual, only mutual likes lead the way to conversation, and to avoid those totally inspired first move of ‘hi how r u’, your first message has to be at least 100 characters.

Our favourite feature of all? Happii has an algorithm that intercepts any unsolicited dick pics. There’s also a ‘date diary’ to log your dates for your peace of mind and another algorithm to ward off dating scams.

The app launches later this year with a £12.50 annual charge to access the full-site (sign-up is free), you know the potential dates you meet there are serious. Pre-registration is available now, and the first 5000 who sign up get a free membership for life.

Now just need to work on our 100-character intro…

Snyder Suggests the Dead Robin in BvS Was Dick Grayson

Batman v Superman director Zack Snyder has been fairly active on social media site Vero over the past few days, with his most recent posts suggesting that Bruce Wayne uses sex as a drug in the movie to forget about the significant baggage he carries on his shoulders. One scene in the movie represents this baggage pretty succinctly, with a brief shot of a defaced Robin uniform belonging to Batman’s former – deceased – sidekick.

It’s long been assumed that the the outfit was meant to represent Jason Todd, the second Robin, in a reflection of the comic book storyline which saw his death – but if Snyder is to be believed, it may actually have been referring to Dick Grayson, the original sidekick to call himself Robin.

Hall of Fame and Emmy Award-Winning Sportscaster Dick Enberg Has Died at 82

(SAN DIEGO) — Dick Enberg, a Hall of Fame broadcaster known as much for his excited calls of “Oh my!” as the big events he covered during a 60-year career, died Thursday. He was 82.

Enberg’s daughter, Nicole Enberg Vaz, confirmed the death to The Associated Press. She said the family became concerned when he didn’t arrive on his flight to Boston on Thursday, and that he was found dead at his home in La Jolla, a San Diego neighborhood, with his bags packed.

His daughter said the family believes Enberg died of a heart attack but was awaiting official word.

“It’s very, very, very shocking,” Vaz said. “He’d been busy with two podcasts and was full of energy.”

Enberg got his big break with UCLA basketball and went on to call Super Bowls, Olympics, Final Fours and Angels and Padres baseball games.

Enberg retired from his TV job with the San Diego Padres in October 2016, capping a six-decade career punctuated with countless calls of “Oh my!” in describing a play that nearly defied description. He also was well-known for his baseball catchphrase of “Touch ’em all!” for home runs.

Raised in Armada, Michigan, Enberg’s first radio job was actually as a radio station custodian in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, when he was a junior at Central Michigan. He made $ 1 an hour. The owner also gave him weekend sports and disc jockey gigs, also at $ 1 an hour. From there he began doing high school and college football games.

During his nine years broadcasting UCLA basketball, the Bruins won eight NCAA titles. Enberg broadcast nine no-hitters, including two by San Francisco’s Tim Lincecum against the Padres in 2013 and 2014.

He said the most historically important event he covered was “The Game of the Century,” Houston’s victory over UCLA in 1968 that snapped the Bruins’ 47-game winning streak.

“That was the platform from which college basketball’s popularity was sent into the stratosphere,” Enberg said just before retiring from the Padres. “The ’79 game, the Magic-Bird game, everyone wants to credit that as the greatest game of all time That was just the booster rocket that sent it even higher. … UCLA, unbeaten; Houston, unbeaten. And then the thing that had to happen, and Coach Wooden hated when I said this, but UCLA had to lose. That became a monumental event.”

Enberg’s many former broadcast partners included Merlin Olsen, Al McGuire, Billy Packer, Don Drysdale and Tony Gwynn. He even worked a few games with Wooden, whom he called “The greatest man I’ve ever known other than my own father.” Enberg called Padres games for seven seasons and went into the broadcasters’ wing of the Hall of Fame in 2015.

John Ireland, the radio voice of the Los Angeles Lakers, tweeted that “If there was a Mount Rushmore of LA Sports Announcers, Dick Enberg is on it with Chick Hearn, Vin Scully and Bob Miller. Rams, Angels, UCLA, NBC, and so much more. Was the first famous announcer I ever met, and he couldn’t have been nicer. Definition of a gentleman.”

Enberg won 13 Sports Emmy Awards and a Lifetime Achievement Emmy. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and UCLA named its Media Center in Pauley Pavilion after Enberg this year.

“Kindest, most proactive possible treatment of newcomers in this business, for the length of his career,” broadcaster Keith Olbermann said of Enberg on Twitter. “What a terrible loss.”

Remembering Dick Gregory: Comedian, Activist, and Entrepreneur

Iconic comedian and activist Dick Gregory passed away on Saturday at the age of 84. Beginning his career in 1953, Dick Gregory used his comedy to convey his political ideals to white and black audiences alike.

For instance, he spoke for two uninterrupted hours at “Freedom Day” in 1963, which was a rally to drive black voter registration. He also unsuccessfully ran for president of the United States in 1968 as a write-in candidate.

Gregory eventually became a successful entrepreneur. A longtime vegan and healthy eating advocate, many may remember Gregory’s Slim-Safe Bahamian Diet—a meal replacement powder to help with weight loss.

In the March 1989 issue of Black Enterprise magazine, it was reported that Gregory had amassed a “small fortune” from sales of his Slim-Safe product. That same year, he purchased a beachfront hotel in Florida for $ 7 million to use as a health, nutrition, and weight-loss center.

The hotel buy was part of the expansion of Dick Gregory Enterprises his business venture, which was averaging revenue of $ 30,000 per day just from Slim-Safe sales alone.

The hotel was part of Gregory’s vision to offer luxury accommodations to those who wanted to improve their health and nutrition.

“In order to reach Americans, you have to do it with glamour,” he said in an interview with Black Enterprise.  “I want to glamorize health and nutrition the same way we have [glamorized] athletics and sports.”

His business interests were fueled by a passion to see Americans, particularly black Americans, adopt a healthier lifestyle.

“We have got to make health an issue in America,” he said. “We have to make teenagers just as excited drinking juice as they are about buying a pair of Michael Jordan’s tennis shoes.”

“Dick Gregory was an activist and creative genius who knew the struggle for liberation could only take flight if prominent individuals like himself leveraged their considerable influence, and joined the masses on the front lines of the dismantling of Jim Crow,” said NAACP Board Chairman Leon W. Russell in a statement. “We have lost one of the most important voices of social justice vigilance in the last fifty years. His intellectual style of humor defied racist stereotypes, eschewed buffoonery, and provided white America rare insight into the unquestionable humanity of black people,” added Russell.

“Our brother in the struggle, Dick Gregory will be sorely missed,” said NAACP interim President Derrick Johnson. “He, along with people like Harry Belafonte and Paul Robeson, pioneered the use of celebrity as a tool to push for social justice. Our community and nation owes a great debt to him for his decades of work to eradicate racism.”

Legendary Comedian and Activist Dick Gregory Has Passed Away

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Dick Gregory, who broke racial barriers in the 1960s and used his humor to spread messages of social justice and nutritional health, has died. He was 84.

Gregory’s son, Christian, told The Associated Press his father died late Saturday in Washington, D.C. after being hospitalized for about a week. He had suffered a severe bacterial infection.

Gregory was one of the first black comedians to find mainstream success with white audiences in the early 1960s. He rose from an impoverished childhood in St. Louis to become a celebrated satirist who deftly commented upon racial divisions at the dawn of the civil rights movement.

He also ran for president in 1968 as the Peace and Freedom party candidate.

What a tool.

But Samsung wasn’t having any of that. The company decided to respond to @savEdward with a simple yet effective emoji.

Needless to say, Twitter was quick to sing Samsung’s praises.

Dick Cavett Explains How David Letterman’s ‘Mask Of Innocence’ Helped Him Get Away With Anything

Late-night TV legend Dick Cavett joined HuffPost Live on Wednesday to look back on the legacy of David Letterman and say goodbye to the subversive comedy icon, who officially begins his retirement after his final “Late Show” episode airs tonight.

Cavett, a longtime fan of and former guest on Letterman’s show, told host Josh Zepps that the key to Letterman’s incredible interview style was his ability to hilariously insult his guests even as they sat right next to him, creating a unique “sense of danger” on his show. Cavett said Letterman was able to sneak by his biting barbs thanks to “that hayseed, rustic, Midwestern, innocent, clownish face.”

In order to do “those things that he was criticized for and the dummies didn’t get,” Cavett explained Letterman often hid his cutting wit “behind a wonderful mask of innocence, and I think that’s what made it effective for those who dug it, among whom I was one.”

Cavett added that often guests had no idea they’d been hilariously ripped apart by Letterman until after the interview was over.

“David’s attitude — it wasn’t so much ever what he said — but his attitude and his looks were priceless, and I’m sure some of [the guests] were stunned when they got home, saw themselves with David and saw what he had done to them,” Cavett said.
