Bryan Cranston Used to Pull the Most Walter White Prank on Aaron Paul During Breaking Bad

Not only did Aaron Paul dress his baby daughter up in a mini hazmat suit for Breaking Bad‘s 10th-anniversary panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday, but he also regaled fans with a hilarious behind-the-scenes story from the award-winning drama.

After explaining that showrunner Vince Gilligan had told him that the writers originally planned to kill off Jesse at the end of season one, Paul revealed that co-star Bryan Cranston frequently used this information to convince him his character was done for.

“He came up to me the first time he did it and just gives me a really long, exaggerated hug. He’s just not letting me go [and I’m like], ‘What’s going on?’” Paul said. “He’s like, ‘Hey, man, it’s been a fun ride.’ I was like, ‘What do you mean?’ He’s like, ‘I thought you read the script, right?’ [I was like,] ‘No.’ He’s like, ‘Oh,’ and then he just walks away. And I run into the production office, and I’m like, ‘Where’s the script?!’ And they’re like, ‘It’s not available yet,’ and I’m like, ‘Please, god, tell me.’ And then I read it and I was alive still.”

“There was another time where they did a fitting [and said], ‘We need to measure you for the coffin.’ [I’m like,] ‘A coffin?’ And they’re like, ‘Oh, you don’t know about it?’

11 People Dead After a Duck Boat Capsized During a Severe Thunderstorm on Missouri Lake

Eleven people, including children, have died and a number of passengers remain missing after a duck boat capsized during a thunderstorm that ravaged Table Rock Lake in Missouri on Thursday.

About 31 people were on a Ride the Ducks boat in the Ozarks when strong winds caused it to capsize, Stone County Sheriff Doug Rader said in a press conference broadcast by KY3.

Rader said seven people were transported to the hospital with injuries and added that the recovery and rescue mission would continue throughout the night with teams of divers. It is not clear how many people remain missing.

He said he believed the boat turned over and sunk due to the stormy weather at about 8 p.m. ET with the thunderstorm winds as high as 60 mph, according to NBC News. The duck boat remains at the bottom of the lake.

Rader added that an off-duty sheriff’s deputy was on the boat and helped rescue people.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

The Table Rock Lake Twitter page tweeted it was “aware of a major incident that happened tonight” at the lake “and ask that you pray for those involved as well as law enforcement/first responders.”

In a video captured and shared on Facebook by Jeanie Phillips-Hudson Carr, two duck boats are seen struggling to reach land while a thunderstorm raged on.

One duck boat is seen gaining speed in the lake as it appears to make headway toward land, while the other remains left behind and struggling to remain upright against ferocious winds.

Toward the end of the video, the second boat is seen slowly turning on its side and sinking into the water as shocked bystanders watch from the Branson Belle, a showboat that helped rescue people, according to the Springfield News-Leader.

In a second video posted by Phillips-Hudson Carr, workers on the showboat can be heard desperately calling for rope and help to try to rescue the stricken amphibious boat.

“We are at Branson and on the showboat! A storm came in as we got on and there was 2 ducks that you ride out there and 1 went under. Not sure if everyone on it is ok,” Phillips-Hudson Carr wrote.

In audio obtained by the News-Leader, a dispatcher tells first responders people aboard the Branson Belle were pulling victims out of the water.

“We have a report of a duck that has sank completely,” the dispatcher said. “They have lost sight of it. About 10 people have surfaced, but there were about 20 people on board.”

“They are attempting to pull people out on the Belle and the surrounding dock,” the dispatcher continued. “We have CPR in progress on one. One more they can see, face down in the water. They’re trying to get to at this time.”

A first responder could be heard telling the dispatcher, “Copy that. If you would, go ahead and notify Mercy. Tell’ em to send every truck they’ve got.”

The duck boat was part of Ride the Duck in Branson, Missouri, a fleet which was bought last year by Ripley Entertainment, the company that owns Ripley’s Believe It or Not.

Suzanne Smagala-Potts, a spokeswoman for the company tells PEOPLE they are aware of the situation.

“Number one, our priority is the families and employees, and that’s what we’re focusing on. We are in contact with authorities but we do not have enough information at this time to confirm anything,” Smagala-Potts says.

According to the company’s website, Ride the Ducks is a guided amphibious tour for both land and water that lasts 70 minutes.

Miami Dolphins to Discipline Players Who Protest During National Anthem With Fines, Suspensions or Both

Miami Dolphins players who protest on the field during the national anthem could be suspended for up to four games under a team policy issued this week.

The “Proper Anthem Conduct” section is just one sentence in a nine-page discipline document provided to The Associated Press by a person familiar with the policy who insisted on anonymity because the document is not public. It classifies anthem protests under a large list of “conduct detrimental to the club,” all of which could lead to a paid or unpaid suspension, a fine or both.

Miami’s anthem policy comes after the NFL decided in May that teams would be fined if players didn’t stand during “The Star-Spangled Banner” while on the field. The league left it up to teams on how to punish players. None of the team policies have been made public.

The NFL rule forbids players from sitting or taking a knee if they are on the field or sidelines during the national anthem, but allows them to stay in the locker room if they wish. The new league rules were challenged this month in a grievance by the players union.

The NFL declined to comment. Team officials had no immediate comment.

MLB Pitcher Apologizes After Racist and Homophobic Tweets Surface During All-Star Game

A pitcher’s Major League Baseball All-Star debut was tainted Tuesday night as years-old racist, homophobic and sexist tweets from his account surfaced and started to trend on Twitter during the game.

Immediately afterwards, Josh Hader, a 24-year-old Milwaukee Brewers pitcher, apologized and told reporters he was “young, immature and stupid” when he posted the tweets.

“There’s no excuse for what was said, and, you know, I’m deeply sorry for what I’ve said and what’s been going on,” he said. “It doesn’t reflect any of my beliefs going on now.”

The tweets, many of them from seven years ago when Hader was 17, spurred controversy and uproar from MLB fans and viewers during the All-Star game.

Hader’s Twitter account did not appear to be active Wednesday morning. According to screenshots shared by numerous Twitter users, Hader posted tweets in 2011 that included racist, sexist and homophobic slurs – including one that read “white power.”

Months after posting the tweets, Hader was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 2012 MLB draft. He joined the Brewers in 2015.

“I assume when you’re a kid you just tweet what’s on your mind,” Hader said Tuesday night.

Hader gave up a 3-run home run during his appearance in the All-Star game, which helped the American League defeat Hader’s National League team 8-6.

The MLB has not yet released a statement regarding the situation, but Dan Halem, the league’s chief legal officer, said baseball officials may consider commenting later this week, according to the Los Angeles Times. Hader told reporters after the MLB All-Star game he is willing to accept any punishment that comes as a result of the tweets.

As the controversy unraveled during the game, fans wearing shirts with Hader’s name reportedly turned them inside out and officials gave members of his family wearing his jersey generic ones, according to Yahoo Sports.

Hader’s racist tweets are just the latest to raise questions about whether young athletes should be held responsible for their behavior on social media in the past. With the internet, the racist, homophobic, sexist or offensive thoughts of a teenager can be resurfaced years later. Earlier this year, a number of tweets with racist language from top NFL draft pic Josh Allen emerged, according to Yahoo Sports.

Allen, who drafted to the Buffalo Bills, had a similar excuse for the tweets. The 22-year-old told ESPN he was “young and dumb” when he posted the tweets several years ago in high school.

According to Anita Bennett’s UrbanHollywood411, funny woman Tiffany Haddish not only brought the house down Saturday night at the Laugh Factory in Los Angeles with laughter, but ended up breaking down in tears herself.

Haddish warned fans they’ll see the outfits over and over, because she believes in recycling.

Ada Kokosar Debuts Solo Shoe Collection During Paris Couture

After debuting last season with a shoe range for Cesare Paciotti and earlier this year with a collaboration with Dodo Bar Or, Ada Kokosar presented the first solo footwear collection of Midnight 00 by Ada Kokosar at the Meurice during Couture Week. The fashion consultant took over the hotel’s Belle Etoile suite overlooking the Tuileries garden, filling it with plants until the luxury accommodation looked like it had been overrun by nature during Sleeping Beauty’s century-long nap.
What is unique about these slippers is the high-gloss finish brought by the PVC that Kokosar drapes on each draped-and-embellished design. “As a reference, I wanted to take the most iconic and utopian shoe of all times, Cinderella’s glass slipper,” she said, showing off a glossy mule with flourishes of soft fabric peeking at the edges and decorated with a bejeweled crescent moon — the brand’s emblem. Heels and flats came in soft yet saturated shades of lilac, peach or pink fabric — silk satin, duchesse or super-soft cotton. Most striking of all was the transparent ruffle that encases shoe and ankle in a shell-like cocoon. Cherry on this highly iced cake? “The PVC makes the shoe last for a very long time: it

Beyonce And Jay Z Take Gorgeous Pics Alongside Blue Ivy, During Mini Break From Their Tour

Beyonce and Jay Z have been very busy while on their joint On the Run II world tour, but they found some free time during which they could just relax with the family. Beyonce took to her social media of choice, Instagram, to share a few fantastic photos featuring her at the seaside alongside her rapper hubby and six year old daughter Blue Ivy.

One snap was of the married power couple posing on some stone steps and even though the photos were supposed to be casual and personal ones from their mini vacation, they still looked like superstars.

Queen Bey stunned in a colorful dress while Jay Z wore a polo shirt and a pair of black pants.

As to create ambiance and to give a little but more personality to the photo, Beyonce took her white heels off and placed them near a Corona bottle.

A post shared by Beyoncé (@beyonce) on

But that was not their only snap. In the slideshow, there was also one that featured the family on the dock of a boatyard.

A post shared by Beyoncé (@beyonce) on

The infant twins, Rumi and Sir, were nowhere to be seen during the family photo shoot but Blue Ivy definitely was!

The photos were not accompanied by any captions but we have heard that Beyonce and Jay Z were invited to the wedding of Elon Musk’s brother, Kimbal Musk, in Spain so that might be where they were when they took the pics.

The star studded ceremony was a way for the couple to distress as they are currently on their European leg of their tour and these sort of things can be really tiring and stressful.

Not to mention that their latest date did not even go smoothly. Beyonce remained stranded on a flying stage when it malfunctioned, and staff had to bring a ladder just to get her down.

When accepting his award, Omari Hardwick decided to turn the spotlight from himself to someone else. A young man approached him on the red carpet right before the show, hugged him, and said, “Man, you saved me, you saved me. I was like a broke kid in Maryland. Sunday nights just watching your character, I could see your character in that character.”

Hardwick was so moved by the man that he brought him on stage to revisit the interaction. “I thought man, all I ever wanted to do was tell stories,” said Hardwick, as the man stood next to him with tears streaming from his eyes. “It’s amazing to be able to tell stories and make money doing it, but you tell stories and…you affect so many people. My father used to say, you never know who’s looking at you.”

The awards ceremony took place at the SLS Beverly Hills and it is clear that the mission of this organization is working. “Icon Talks will continue to pay homage to our modern image-makers—both in front of the camera and behind the scenes,” said John Burns, co-founder of Icon Talks. “This past year has been an exceptional push for diversity in film and television, and with the incredible contributions of our honorees, it is fitting that we celebrated the future of entertainment and its continued steps on the path to inclusion.”

Icon Talks was generously sponsored by the Motion Picture Association of America, AT&T, Planned Parenthood, Ciroc, and Porsche Cars North America.

Melania Trump Wears Jacket Saying ‘I Really Don’t Care’ During Child Detention Center Trip

First Lady Melania Trump visited a Texas detention center Thursday to check in on immigrant children who have been separated from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border.

After the White House announced its “zero-tolerance” policy in April, over 2,000 children have been separated from their parents. Trump decided to make the trip a day after the president signed an executive order to stop the separation of families, but it’s not her timing people are questioning–it’s her fashion choice.

When boarding the plane in Maryland, Trump was spotted wearing a khaki green jacket with the words “I really don’t care, do you?” scrawled in white graffiti-style writing on the back. Trump removed the jacket before deplaning, but the internet had already latched onto this paradoxical clothing choice, some finding it hard to believe.

Others compared the event to the 2014 incident when then-President Barack Obama was bashed for wearing a tan suit, or the time in 2009 when conservatives criticized Michelle Obama for wearing a dress than exposed her bare arms.

“It’s a jacket. There was no hidden message,” said Melania Trump’s publicist, insisting reporters instead focus on the First Lady’s detention center visit.

Trump toured the facilities of the Upbring New Hope Children’s Center in McAllen, Tex. and participated in a roundtable discussion with staff members. She inquired about the children’s physical and mental care. When she asked how often children are allowed to speak to their families, she was told children with verified families get a 10-minute phone conversation twice a week.

“We all know they are here without their families and I want to thank you for your hard work, your compassion, and your kindness you are giving to them in these difficult times,” Trump told the staff members.

This visit was an attempt to lend support to those caring for the immigrant children, although Trump did not make a public statement about the plight of separated families until this past Sunday. While the visit shows Trump is making an effort to be involved with the care of the children, her jacket choice sent a confusing message.

Get The Strap: 21 Savage Pulls Out Gun During Pool Party [VIDEO]

Post Malone In Concert - Sterling Heights, MI

Source: Scott Legato / Getty

Apparently, 21 Savage is packing, even at pool parties. The “Bank Account” rapper was caught on video pulling out a gun during a brawl to let heads know he is clearly ’bout that life.

In the clip, someone is seen getting knocked the f*ck out at a Georgie pool party. While dude is slumped on the ground, recovering from the fade, you can see 21 Savage looking toward the perpetrator(s), holding a pistol in his right hand.

However, it would seem that 21 Savage was preparing for the smoke instead of initiating it.

Reports TMZ:

Savage was partying it up Saturday at an annual rager in the Atlanta area called “Big Ass Pool Party,” when a large group of people crashed the event through the back.

Eyewitnesses tell us Sav appeared uneasy at the unexpected entrance, and that all hell broke loose when a person from the other camp said hi to a girl in Savage’s circle, upsetting his side. We’re told someone from the crashers’ crew pulled out a gun when confronted, which led to Savage arming himself, too. It appears he receives a revolver from a friend.

We’re told no shots were fired during the altercation, but someone from the invading group was hit to the ground. Cops eventually shut things down — no word on any arrests.

Since part of this was caught on video, expect the cops to ask 21 a whole lot of questions.

Someone has gotta remind 21 Savage he has weed carriers and baggage handlers now who should be on the frontlines—he’s got too much to lose.

Janet Jackson Calls Police On Estranged Husband During Visit With Son

Even Janet Jackson isn’t immune to problems with her baby daddy. While her estranged husband, Wissam Al-Mana was in Los Angeles visiting with their son, Eissa, Jackson called police to do a welfare check on him, reportedly because a nanny reported some troubling behavior on Al-Mana’s part. Al-Mana and the child were at Malibu’s Nobu Hotel. TMZ first reported on the story.

People.com reports:

Jackson called authorities around 10 p.m. PT on Saturday, a spokesperson for the Malibu Lost Hill’s Sheriff’s Station said.

“Deputies were there [and] called to the scene. They decided the child was okay and they left,” the spokesperson told PEOPLE.

Jackson, 52, was not at the hotel at the time, authorities confirmed.

The pop star’s brother Randy Jackson told Entertainment Tonight — which first reported the news on Sunday — that Jackson was concerned after their nanny grew “terrified” by Al Mana’s behavior and “locked herself in a bathroom, so she could contact Janet.”

Janet Jackson has made no comment.

As Sonia Rykiel celebrates its 50th year, the brand has been invited by National Fédération de la Couture et de la Mode to present a collection named “ L’Atelier” during next July couture week. The special collection will highlight the work of Julie de Libran, Sonia Rykiel’s current artistic director, as well as the house history of savoir-faire and strong women. The special presentation will take place at the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris on July 1 at 11 a.m.

The NFL Has Decided to Fine Teams if Players Kneel During the National Anthem

(ATLANTA) — NFL owners approved a new policy Thursday aimed at addressing the firestorm over national anthem protests sparked by Colin Kaepernick and polarized by President Trump, permitting players to stay in the locker room during the “The Star-Spangled Banner” but requiring them to stand if they come to the field.

Commissioner Roger Goodell said the change was approved unanimously by the owners at their spring meeting in Atlanta, but it was met with immediate skepticism by the players’ union.

“We want people to be respectful of the national anthem. We want people to stand,” Goodell said. “That’s all personnel, and to make sure they treat this moment in a respectful fashion. That’s something that we think we owe. We’ve been very sensitive on making sure that we give players choices, but we do believe that moment is an important moment and one that we are going to focus on.”

In a sign that players were not part of the discussions, any violations of the policy would result in fines against the team — not the players.

The NFL Players Association said it will challenge any part of the new policy that violates the collective bargaining agreement.

The owners spent several hours addressing the contentious issue — which has reached all the way to the White House.

Kaepernick, the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback, began kneeling during the national anthem in 2016, a quiet but powerful protest against police brutality and racial inequities in the justice system.

Other players took up the cause, and the gesture carried on during the 2017 season even after Kaepernick left the 49ers and failed to land a job with another team.

President Trump turned the anthem protests into a campaign issue , saying the NFL should fire any player who takes a knee during “The Star-Spangled Banner.” The NFL hasn’t gone that far, but Kaepernick has yet to land another job and one of his former teammates and fellow protesters, safety Eric Reid, is also out of work.

Both have filed collusion grievances against the NFL.

While the owners touted the change as a compromise and noted it was approved unanimously, the players’ union made it clear it was not part of the discussions.

“The NFL chose to not consult the union in the development of this new ‘policy,’” the NFLPA said in a statement. “NFL players have shown their patriotism through their social activism, their community service, in support of our military and law enforcement and yes, through their protests to raise awareness about the issues they care about.”

The statement added, “The vote by NFL club CEOs today contradicts the statements made to our player leadership by Commissioner Roger Goodell and the Chairman of the NFL’s Management Council John Mara (co-owner of the New York Giants) about the principles, values and patriotism of our League.”

The NFL was reportedly considering whether to assess a 15-yard penalty against any player who took a knee or conducted any other protest during the anthem.

Another possible option would have been to change up the pregame routine entirely, keeping teams in their respective locker rooms until after the anthem had played. That is the protocol long followed by college football, preventing anthem protests from being carried out on the field.

In the end, the owners sent a bit of a convoluted message — appeasing those who feel the national anthem must be treated with reverence, while allowing some sort of conduit for players to protest as long as they stay out of the public eye.

“We’ve spent a lot of time, not just at this meeting, but really over the last year discussing the issue of the anthem and working with our players to make sure we could get to a place where all the different viewpoints could be respected,” said Art Rooney II, owner of the Pittburgh Steelers. “Obviously, we want to continue to work with our players and make sure they feel that their point of view has been respected. I think the fact that those who are not comfortable standing for the anthem have the right to stay off the field — so we’re not forcing anybody to stand who doesn’t feel that way about particular subjects — but those who are on the field are going to be asked to stand.”

Goodell said the league met with countless players over the last year to get their input on the anthem controversy.

“We think that we’ve come up with a balanced process, procedure and policy that will allow those players who feel they can’t stand for the anthem to stay in the locker room,” the commissioner said. “There’s no penalty for that, but we’re going to encourage all of them to be on field. We’d like for all of them to be on the field and stand at attention.”

Goodell was asked who would get to decide what actions would be considered disrespectful to the anthem or the U.S. flag.

“Well, I think the general public has a very strong view of what respect for the flag is and that moment,” he said. “We have language in our policy that talks about that, standing attention, hats off and focused. And I think the general arbiter will the clubs and the league and we’ll work with our players to get their viewpoint also.”

The NFL Told Teams to Stand During the National Anthem in the 1960s. Here’s How One Player Protested

On Wednesday, the NFL announced that players must either stand for the national anthem when it is played at their games or remain in the locker room; if they come onto the field but don’t stand, their teams will be fined. The decision comes more than a year after San Francisco 49ers then-quarterback Colin Kaepernick decided to sit and kneel during “The Star-Spangled Banner” as a protest against police brutality, inspiring other players to do the same.

This isn’t the first time that the commissioner of the league has decided to clarify how players should act during the song.

The anthem had become a mainstay at professional football stadiums shortly after the end of World War II, when NFL Commissioner Elmer Layden called for teams to play the national anthem at the beginning of games, continuing what had been seen by some as a temporary wartime show of patriotism. “The National Anthem should be as much a part of every game as the kick-off,” he declared. “We must not drop it simply because the war is over. We should never forget what it stands for.”

But as the anthem stuck around, the song also became a focus of protest. More than two decades later, millions around the world watched as Olympic sprinters Tommie Lee Smith and John Carlos bowed their heads and raised black-gloved fists during the national anthem at the 1968 Summer Games in Mexico City, in protest against racial inequality.

Shortly after, hoping that something similar wouldn’t happen during a football game, the NFL commissioner at that time, Pete Rozelle, announced that players had to hold their helmets in their left hands and salute the American flag during the anthem. (Previously, some players had simply stood around casually or used the time to get ready for the game.)

The decree wasn’t unprompted. “There were a lot of rumblings about the Vietnam War in the league by players, so [Rozelle] thought there was a lack of discipline,” Marc Ferris, author of Star-Spangled Banner: The Unlikely Story of America’s National Anthem, tells TIME. “Players did conform because Rozelle was pretty iron-handed — except one guy.”

That guy, the kind of rebel Rozelle about whom was clearly worried, was David Meggyesy, a linebacker for the St. Louis Cardinals (now the Arizona Cardinals). League officials had already gotten wind of 37 players signing an anti-Vietnam War petition that he was circulating and planning to send to Congress. Meggyesy described what irked him about Rozelle’s directive in the book Generation on Fire: Voices of Protest from the 1960s, An Oral History: “I became increasingly aware about how the game was being used by the establishment forces to sell the war, with things like patriotic half time demonstrations and military jets flying over the Super Bowl… It was like the military.”

Get your history fix in one place: sign up for the weekly TIME History newsletter

“My original idea was to pull a [Tommie] Smith by raising my right fist in the air and bowing my head,” he wrote in his 1970 tell-all Out of Their League. “Instead, I decided not to salute the flag but to pretend I was nervous for the game. I was aware that if my protest was too obvious I would be severely fined. When the National Anthem started I stepped out of line and began kicking the dirt and holding my helmet down in front of me with my two hands. My head was bowed and I was spitting on the ground and moving from side to side scuffing the ground with my shoes.”

But his more subtle protest was still noticed. Especially after a sports columnist covered his actions, the team and local radio stations were flooded with callers complaining about Meggyesy’s apparent lack of patriotism. “At the start of our next game,” he later told writer Dave Zirin, “some fans unfurled a big banner that said ‘The Big Red [the nickname of the Cardinals] think Pink.’ It was their way of saying that I was a ‘pinko’ (a communist), and that we were a ‘pinko’ team.”

He was benched and eventually had to leave the league. In that period, Rozelle also told players specifically not to chew gum or talk during the song. “It was absolutely unfair, but what really pissed me off was that I was powerless to change it, so I decided to write a book to expose football for what it was,” and to “have a role in this movement for social justice and social change,” he said in Generation on Fire.

Hence, the tell-all.

Written in about four months, the book contained a number of bombshells. In a 1971 review, TIME called it “an angry, sometimes self-righteous attack on the ‘incredible racism,’ ‘dehumanizing conditions’ and ‘violence and sadism’ of pro football. Sparing no one, Meggyesy rails against coaches, trainers, who ‘do more dealing in drugs than the average junkie,’ and players, one of whom (Jim Ringo, former All-League center for Lombardi’s Green Bay Packers) supposedly told Meggyesy in all seriousness that ‘in football the Commies are on one side of the ball and we’re on the other.’” Sports Illustrated put Meggyesy’s book on its 2002 list of “The Top 100 Sports Books Of All Time,” calling it one of the first books by an athlete to expose the “‘dehumanizing’ experience of the modern professional athlete.”

Over time, the NFL’s stringency about the anthem faded somewhat. As the New York Times has noted, before Wednesday’s announcement a modern version of Rozelle’s rule about the anthem did exist, requiring players to be on the sideline but simply encouraging them to stand rather than requiring it, but, “Few knew the rule even existed until Colin Kaepernick, the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback, took advantage of that language in 2016.”

In recent years Meggyesy — who later returned to football to work for the players’ union — has had some cause to feel somewhat vindicated, as his 1968 story has been reincarnated, in a way, for another generation of players. Last year, he told Yahoo! that he thought Kaepernick’s protest was “a big yes, definitely a yes – very appropriate and timely and I think courageous.”

The NFL Is Reportedly Considering Penalties For Players Who Kneel During the National Anthem

The NFL is reportedly considering punishing players who kneel in protest of police brutality during the national anthem ahead of games.

At a Tuesday meeting in Atlanta, NFL owners weighed the possibility of introducing 15-yard penalties for players who kneel during the anthem, Sports Illustrated reports. As part of the rule, home teams can decide whether both teams will come out of the locker room during the national anthem — penalties can be handed out for any player that kneels.

Several NFL players have taken a knee during the national anthem over the last two seasons as part of an effort to raise awareness of police brutality and racial inequality. Colin Kaepernick, known for kicking off the protest in 2016, has sued the NFL along with Eric Reid, saying league teams have worked together to keep the players unsigned. Both are currently free agents.

Kaepernick’s kneeling prompted many other players to kneel over the 2016 and 2017 football seasons. The national anthem protests ramped up significantly during the 2017 season, after President Donald Trump slammed players who kneeled, calling anyone who did so a “son of a bitch” who deserved to be fired.

Florence to Bloom During Pitti Uomo

MILAN — “The big Italian and international trade shows have to [involve] the cities more and more,” said Raffaello Napoleone, chief executive officer of Pitti Uomo trade show’s organizer Pitti Immagine on Wednesday.
Napoleone presented the packed schedule of shows, presentations and special projects of the upcoming edition of the Florence-based men’s trade show, which runs June 12 -15. The comments were made because Pitti Uomo is set to be an event not only within the historic Fortezza da Basso location’s walls but throughout the whole city. “We’re really glad that the involvement [of Florence] in what we do in Fortezza da Basso is increasing,” said Napoleone.
On the inaugural day of the trade show, Gucci will unveil two new halls at the Gucci Garden Galleria exhibition space, housed inside the Gucci Garden, with a cocktail event. Opened during January’s edition and located inside the historic Palazzo della Mercanzia in Florence’s Piazza della Signoria, the space also hosts a restaurant curated by the three-Michelin-star chef Massimo Bottura and a store. Police Suspend Officer After 65-Year-Old Woman Dragged From Car During Traffic Stop

The police department in Alpharetta, Georgia have suspended an officer and opened an internal investigation regarding a May 4 traffic stop where a 65-year-old grandmother was pulled from her car.

“I just panicked. I felt like my heart exploded,” Rose Campbell told WSB-TV. “I didn’t expect that in America. I didn’t expect that in Atlanta. I didn’t expect that especially in Alpharetta.”

In the full dash cam video posted by the police department on YouTube, Public Safety Chief John Robison begins by promising “a decisive and appropriate outcome.”

“There are aspects of this video that do not represent who we are as an organization,” Robison says.

According to the police, Campbell was pulled over by officer Michael Swerdlove after she swerved into a second lane while turning, almost causing a collision. Swerdlove is seen approaching the vehicle and then attempts to warrant a citation for the incident. Campbell refused to sign the ticket because she believed it would be an admission of guilt–and that is when things quickly escalated.

“He told me he was giving me a citation for failure to maintain lane.  I said for what?  Everybody does that when a cop gives you a ticket, unless you’re wrong, you’re gonna ask why,” she said.

Swerdlove told her that if she refused to sign the citation she would be arrested. Campbell then attempts to ask for a supervisor, but the officer demands that she gets out of the car to attempt an arrest. Swerdlove is then shown opening Campbell’s door and begins to pull her out.

“No sir, this is abusive behavior,” Campbell can be heard saying at one point in the video. “I’m being abused, I need the supervisor now!” she continues.

As a second cop approaches the car, Campbell continues asking for the supervisor. The cop continues to tug on her, while the second officer begins to attempt to pull her out of the car.

A third officer named James Legg approaches on the passenger’s side, but then walks around to the other two officers who are still pulling on Campbell to get out the car.

As Campbell agrees to get out of the car, Legg walks around to the driver’s side and begins cursing at the woman.

“Hey, you’re not in charge! Shut the f— up and get out the car!” Legg yells at Campbell. Campbell, who is diabetic says she was terrified as they attempted to arrest her.

Legg was suspended as a result of the investigation. Campbell has hired an attorney, but has yet to decide if she wants to take legal action. What she wants is an apology, she told WSB.

“They need to be put on suspension, disciplinary action without pay.  That normally works in the brain,” Campbell said.  “I don’t like the issue of firing people.  I think everyone has a space for redemption.”

Virginia Transit Discounts Offer Commuters Relief During Road Construction

Commuting into a major city can be headache enough. Add a four-year road construction project, and you’re pretty much doomed.

That’s the situation some northern Virginia commuters are facing as roadwork begins on Interstate 66, adding toll lanes and high-occupancy-vehicle lanes to the 22.5-mile stretch between U.S. 29 in Gainesville and the Beltway surrounding Washington, D.C.

Luckily, public transportation agencies are coming to the rescue.

WTOP reports three local public transit systems are offering discounted fares and other incentives to get cars with low occupancy off the roads to relieve congestion.

The Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission is now offering half-price fares on certain routes. The Fairfax Connector is doing the same.

Loudoun County Transit is actually giving commuters free bus rides until June 2 for routes connecting to Metro stations. Loudoun County is also giving out $ 100 SmarTrip cards for drivers who switch to taking a commuter bus, and $ 100 gas cards for those who switch to a carpool.

Read the WTOP article for more details.

The article states transportation leaders in the area hope commuters stick to using public transportation and carpools even after the construction project ends — currently scheduled for 2022.

Maybe when drivers get comfortable with different methods of commuting, they’ll find they can save money by leaving the driving to someone else.

Ken Jeong Jumps Offstage to Help a Woman Suffering From a Seizure During His Comedy Show

Dr. Ken saves the day — for real.

Worlds collided for doctor-turned-actor Ken Jeong when a woman at his Saturday stand-up comedy show in Phoenix, Arizona, had a health scare.

According to TMZ, a woman in the third row suffered a seizure near the beginning of Jeong’s set. Although Jeong first thought the commotion was due to heckling from the crowd, he soon realized that it was a real emergency and dropped off the stage to help her, TMZ reported.

He couldn’t see what was going on with the lights,” audience member Heather Holmberg told USA Today. “He was playing with them from the stage for a second, and it was like, ‘No, no, no. We need you!’ He realized there was an issue, and he came over. It was a moment where time stands still. Someone was having a crisis. There was a hush over the room.”

The 48-year-old comedian assisted the woman until an ambulance arrived and took her to the hospital, the outlet reported. He then got back on stage to continue his routine, but not before the crowd thanked him with a round of applause.

Jeong’s rep also confirmed the incident to USA Today.

Holmberg also reflected on Jeong’s heroic act on Twitter.

“A woman had a medical emergency during the show. Ken thinks its heckling, when people are asking for his help. He jumps off stage to assist. An EMT helped, too,” she wrote. “Then on with the show! Great night! He is gracious and grateful…AND flipping funny!”

Jeong earned a medical degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine and is still a licensed physician.

“I was so intense as a doctor, and I was always stressed out, patients were surprised I did stand-up comedy on the side,” told critics at ABC’s summer press tour in 2015.

His experience in the medical field has transitioned to some of his acting roles, starring in the short-lived ABC sitcom Dr. Ken and playing a doctor in the 2007 film Knocked Up.

Former MasterChef Contestant, 29, Dies After Collapsing During Hottest-Ever London Marathon

Matt Campbell, a chef from northwest England who was a contestant on a reality TV cooking show last year, collapsed after 22.5 miles (36.2 kilometers).

Organizers say “although he received immediate medical treatment on the scene from race doctors, he died later in hospital.”

Campbell last year appeared on the BBC’s “Masterchef: The Professionals.”

Organizers say a medical examination is still required to discover the cause of death.

The Met Office said temperatures reached 73.8 degrees (23.2 Celsius) near the end of the 26.2-mile (42.2-kilometer) course.

A tech guy messed up during Beyoncé’s second Coachella performance, but Queen Bey saved the day

We mistakenly thought that Beyoncé had peaked during her April 14th Coachella performance. Don’t ask us why we thought a Beyoncé peak existed — like we said, it was a mistake. But after seeing Bey’s second Coachella performance, we now know that the goddess is always at her peak, and will remain there forever (even if she has to turn on her own fan).

Yes, that’s right. One of Beyoncé’s tech guys forgot to turn on her diva fan during her April 21st Coachella set, and she was forced to take matters into her own hands like the #ladyboss she is. Bey noticed that a fan on stage wasn’t pointed in the right direction, so she marched on over to it to make the adjustment herself – literally mid-lyric. This is a woman who knows every nook and cranny of her sets, and — even after literally decades in the the business — genuinely cares that every little detail is perfect.

Check out the quick  moment for yourself, and prepare to bow down.

That wasn’t the only hiccup the queen encountered during the performance. She also tried to pick up sister Solange for a sisterly hug (that’s right — Solange was there, too!). Unfortunately, the Knowles girls ended up toppling over.

But, hello? They saved face like champs. Those kicks could have been choreographed for all we know.

If anything, these mishaps remind us that although we’re almost certain Beyoncé is at least half-goddess, she’s still relatable AF. Plus, the rest of the night went off without a hitch.

Now, um, about the tech dude who wasn’t on fan duty…you have some explaining to do, sir.

Vince Staples Goes off on R.Kelly During Coachella Interview

During a post-Coachella performance interview with “Everyday Struggle’s” Nadeska Alexis, Compton rapper Vince Staples didn’t hold back when it came to his opinion on accused child molester R.Kelly.

Staples started out the interview by mocking the livestreamed segment and reading from Alexis’ teleprompter revealing he wouldn’t be sticking to typical PR points. Then taking a weird turn to focus on Kelly, Staples slammed the singer by calling him a “child molester” and a “piece of f*cking sh*t.” Staples stated, “I’ve got one more year on probation. When my last year of probation is over, I’m breaking speed limits — I’m doing wild sh*t.” Despite a noticeably uncomfortable Alexis, Staples continued, “You don’t go to prison if you’re a black entertainer. Only if you’re a black gangster rapper. I’m changing my whole path.”

Staples went on to elaborate:

“Think about it: R. Kelly never went to jail, and he’s a f*cking child molester. He’s a child molester and he pees on people and he can’t read and write, and he didn’t go to jail. I’m a good person — R. Kelly’s a piece of f*cking sh*t. So, if piece of f*cking shit R. Kelly didn’t go to jail for being a child molester and peeing on people and having a human trafficking ring in Atlanta, then I’ll be alright.”

During the interview, Alexis pushed back on Staples’ responses and said that their talk would “get her fired.” But Staples continued, “Because R. Kelly a piece of sh*t? He don’t work here. They should have booked R. Kelly if they like R. Kelly so much. He would have pissed on somebody in the crowd. Because he pees on people.”

Check out Staples’ entire interview above which includes his thoughts on his infamous GoFundMe campaign and claims of Def Jam dropping Lil Durk.

Tristan Thompson Booed During Baskeball Game Amid Cheating Scandal

Not the warmest welcome. Tristan Thompson wasn’t exactly well received during his last basketball game of the season before playoffs on Wednesday, April 11, after he cheated on girlfriend Khloé Kardashian.

The Cleveland Cavaliers player, 27, was booed and jeered by attendees as his team went head-to-head against the New York Knicks at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio.

Thompson’s name wasn’t announced when he came into the game in the first quarter, but as soon as his face was shown on the big screen there were audible boos. “Everyone in the stadium could hear it,” an attendee tells Us. “Tristan must have heard, but didn’t change his expression.”

One fan was also shown in a photo on social media holding up a “We Love Khloe” sign.

Thompson made headlines on Tuesday, April 10, after the Daily Mail published photos of him locking lips with a mystery brunette, who Twitter users identified as Lani Blair, at a NYC club on Saturday, April 7. The pair were photographed arriving at NYC’s Four Seasons hotel together in the early hours of Sunday, April 8, and she left the following day with a Louis Vuitton overnight bag.

A source exclusively told Us Weekly that Kardashian, 33, was blindsided upon discovering that Thompson, with whom she is expecting a daughter, had been unfaithful. “Khloé was at their home in Cleveland when she found out. She is shell-shocked and beside herself,” an insider said of the nine-month-pregnant reality star, who is “in total disbelief.”

Another pal close to the Revenge Body host added: “Khloé knew going into it that Tristan was an NBA player who would be on the road and facing lots of temptations. She heard the noise and knew what that was all about, but she felt that Tristan was different. They were always FaceTiming and in constant communication. He made her feel on top of the world and unlike any man she has been with. She trusted him.”

Us broke the news in September 2017 that the E! personality and Thompson are expecting their first child. She confirmed the news three months later and revealed the baby’s sex in March.

Should hair be growing around my nipples? 4 things every teen girl should know about hair growth during puberty

Should hair be growing around my nipples? 4 things every teen girl should know about hair growth during puberty

Should hair be growing around my nipples? 4 things every teen girl should know about hair growth during puberty

When you’re going through puberty, a lot is happening with your body. Your hormones throw off your emotional mojo, your breasts are growing, and all of the sudden, hair is everywhere. And thanks to mom, sex ed, or your doctor, you may be well-informed about the basics of hair growth during puberty.

But what if you notice something seemingly uncommon — like hair growth around nipples. Is this normal? Or what if your hair down there begins creeping up your navel? You might still have a lot of questions that you find too embarrassing to bring up with an adult. So, to help, we did the asking for you.

We talked to board certified obstetrician and gynecologist Dr. Felice Gersh about the unfamiliar world of hair growth during puberty and compiled a list of hairy facts that every teen girl should know to ease puberty jitters.

Even though it can be embarrassing to talk about, it’s really important that you ask your doctor puberty-related questions. That’s what they’re there for, after all! And besides, puberty is something we all go through, so chances are, you’re not the first person to ask.

But, for now, let’s dive into some of the basic questions you may have about hair popping up all over.

1. A small amount of breast hair is completely normal.

Just like our arms, legs, and pretty much our entire body, our breasts and nipples have hair follicles within the skin. Dr. Gersh told HelloGiggles,

“There can normally be a few scattered hairs around the nipples, which some don’t recognize as within normal limits. Concern over excessive hair should always be checked out.”

According to Columbia University’s Go Ask Alice! forum, excess female nipple or breast hair can be a symptom of hormonal fluctuation or even an overproduction of male-linked hormones. Excess hair growth can also be a warning sign of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, Cushing’s Syndrome, or a thyroid problem. So, as Dr. Gersh noted, if you’re concerned about the amount of breast hair around your nipples, make an appointment with your doctor to get things checked out.

But, if there are just a few hairs here and there around your nipples, Dr. Gersh says plucking them or trimming them short is perfectly fine.

2. Hello, armpit and leg hair.

“Adults’ sexual hair in females is also axillary (under the arms), and of course there is darker and thicker hair growth on the legs,” Dr. Gersh told us, but you may have already found that out for yourself.

Armpit and leg hair may be the most embarrassing hair to emerge from puberty solely because it’s the only hair growth that gets exposed to the public, and your peers. But armpit and leg hair isn’t something you should ever be ashamed of. Some women even flaunt it by growing their armpit hair long and dying it funky colors:

#gazon #dyedarmpits #pourquoipas

A post shared by @ laramatredelogre on

If you wish to remove your armpit or leg hair, shaving is probably the best option. Dr. Gersh recommends to “generously moisturize the skin before and after shaving and use a high quality razor.”

3. And hello to you too, pubic hair.

At the beginning of puberty, you’ll notice that hair will start to grow around your genital region. This is pubic hair and it will turn into a full bush soon enough.

Dr. Gersh said that pubic hair usually covers, “all of the labia majora to the inner surface of the thighs and up to the pubic bone-roughly shaped like a triangle.”

If you begin to notice that your pubic hair is growing upwards towards the navel and/or further downwards, reaching the front of the thighs, you should call your doctor. Too much pubic hair could be a sign that your body is producing too much of the male sex hormone Androgen. An influx of pubic hair can also be a symptom of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), so it’s important to recognize the warning signs and get checked out to make sure everything is copasetic.

4. Some hair growth is not normal for puberty.

Don’t be so quick to use puberty as an excuse for all the hair growth you begin to notice. Dr. Gersh told us that there shouldn’t be any hair growth going on on the face, back, or chest, “though some ethnic groups do have some mild facial hair on women.”

If hair pops up where it shouldn’t, get to your doctor’s office to see what’s going on. It could be nothing, or it could be a sign that your hormones aren’t doing what they should be doing. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

Armpit, leg, and pubic hair is natural and totally normal. There’s nothing wrong with keeping it around if you aren’t keen with a razor, or if you just want be au naturale. And remember, don’t hesitate to approach your doctor with any questions you may have about things going on with your body.

Hillary Clinton Fractures her Wrist After Tripping During Her Visit to India: Report

Hillary Clinton‘s visit to India isn’t going as smoothly as she’d probably hoped.

The former Secretary of State sought medical attention during her visit to the Indian city of Jodhpur on Tuesday, according to The Times of India.

An unnamed doctor told the publication Clinton, 70, “was taken to the hospital in the morning where we administered CT Scan and X-Ray of her hand, which showed that she had a minor fracture in her right wrist.”

A spokesperson for Clinton did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

The Deccan Herald reported Clinton was advised to rest by doctors in Jodhpur. Anand Goyal, who owns Goyal Hospital in the city, told the publication the hospital was called to the Umaid Bhawan Palace where Clinton was staying.

“We were requested to send a team of doctors and hot bandage to the hotel after Hillary complained of pain in her hand,” Goyal said.

Clinton was seen falling twice on the steps of a mosque, according to DNA India. The outlet reported she had also fallen in a bathtub while in Jodhpur on Tuesday afternoon, reportedly leading to her fractured wrist.

Within her itinerary, Clinton was scheduled to visit a historic fort at the Mehrangarh Museum in Jodhpur but an employee told the Deccan Herald it was canceled due to her injury.

This isn’t the first time Clinton has had health troubles. In September 2016, she canceled plans to visit California during her presidential campaign after she was diagnosed with pneumonia.

In December 2012, she suffered a concussion after fainting in her home. The State Department released a statement at the time saying she had been ill from a stomach virus and became dehydrated leading to her loss of consciousness.

She was hospitalized in January 2013 due to a “potentially serious” blood clot that was discovered during a follow-up exam related to her concussion, according to The New York Times. She spent several days at New York Presbyterian Hospital being treated with blood thinners and proper hydration, according to the publication.

I was weight-shamed by a nurse during my pregnancy

by

Maggie Downs

posted in Life

I was about 26 weeks along in my healthy pregnancy and at the doctor’s office for a routine appointment when the nurse practitioner said she had something serious to discuss with me.

I was splayed out on the bed in the exam room, my profound belly pointed to the ceiling, my legs slightly akimbo. A vulnerable position, physically but emotionally as well. Every visit to the doctor is a leap of faith, a wish made, a hope for the best.

I had no idea what the nurse was about to say. My baby was moving and kicking with regularity. I was eating well and felt terrific. In fact, I had biked to the doctor’s office for that very visit. Everything seemed normal.

Pregnant woman sitting on the ground with a round belly near some cacti

“You’ve gained some weight,” she said.

“Yes, I have,” I said.

“Well, you’ve gained weight,” the nurse repeated.

“And …?”

“You should watch it,” she said. “You did so well over the holidays and didn’t gain anything, but now you’re gaining weight again.”

I pointed out that I was growing another body in mine. Weight happens.

That’s when the conversation went from mild concern and made a sharp detour toward condescending.

“You know, if I have a big dinner, the next day I run five miles to burn it off,” the nurse said. “It’s not that hard.”

“I understand how calories work,” I said.

“Clearly you don’t,” she replied.

A pregnant woman holds a falcon in one hand during a falconry class outside

What the nurse didn’t realize was that I am intimately acquainted with calories — and I have been ever since age 5, when my mom started charting my weekly weigh-ins. A piece of notebook paper with a homemade chart hung on the back of the bathroom door, and every Monday my mom watched as I stepped on the scale. She then recorded my weight on the paper.

My late mom was seriously misguided but had good intentions, I think. My mom struggled as an adult to maintain a certain body type, and I imagine she wanted me to have an easier time of it. So she gave me Tab to drink instead of milk and urged me to eat the “skinny” menu items at restaurants, rather than the normal entrees. I’ve owned so many nutrition guides over the years, I can rattle off the calories for practically anything.

What the nurse practitioner also didn’t know was that when I got pregnant, I declared my independence from the scale. For the first time in decades, I decided I didn’t need to be obsessive about my weight, and more importantly, it wasn’t healthy to focus on that when I had other things happening in my body.

I knew I would be gaining weight — what did the numbers matter?

A pregnant belly in a grey and white stretchy dress

So I stopped looking. (That goes for doctor visits too. During the weigh-in, I made it clear that I didn’t want to know my weight— so a nurse recorded the number while I read posters on the wall about HPV.)

“You know you’re just going to have more weight to lose later,” the nurse practitioner added during that weight-shaming visit.

But the thing is, I didn’t care. Pregnancy was the first time in my adult life that I truly felt in tune with my body, and I listened to it. I ate what I craved. I exercised because it felt good. I took up space in the world, and I was proud to have a big, juicy belly.

To this day, I still don’t know how substantial my weight gain was or why the nurse practitioner found it problematic that particular week. I don’t think it was more than a few pounds, because my doctor never spoke to me about it, none of the other nurses ever said a word, and my pregnancy proceeded in a healthy manner until I gave birth to a 7-pound boy.

I have since lost the pregnancy weight, but I still hold the grudge: my body and my baby have taken our copay elsewhere.

Were you weight-shamed during your pregnancy?

Here’s *the* real dress that Donatella Versace wore during the latest episode of “American Crime Story”

Here’s *the* real dress that Donatella Versace wore during the latest episode of “American Crime Story”

Here’s *the* real dress that Donatella Versace wore during the latest episode of “American Crime Story”

If you’ve been secretly missing Penelope Cruz’s portrayal of Donatella Versace for the last few episodes of American Crime Story, here’s some good news for you: The latest episode of the series, “Ascent,” featured a whole lot of Cruz and her bleach blonde hair as the legendary designer. We’re now even further back in time, back when Gianni Versace was still very much alive, and the year is 1993.

The place? New York City. And as for the event? We’re at Vogue Magazine’s 100th anniversary party — an event that truly cemented Donatella as a face (and, behind-the-scenes, a voice) of the fashion house.

“Ascent” opens with a blow out fight between Donatella and her brother, because he is less than impressed with the designs that she is turning in. According to Gianni, they are not up to the regular caliber that their fashion house is used to putting out, so he strikes a deal with his sister — why don’t they design a dress together?

Donatella is eager to help her brother out, and he drapes fabric (and belts) all over her, creating a pretty iconic dress. Then, Gianni suggests that *she* be the one to wear it out, instead of it going to a model. At first, Donatella balks at the idea, but eventually she comes around. As we see in the episode, the second Donatella takes off her coat and the photographers on the red carpet see her, they are truly captivated. All it takes is her wearing one stunning dress to make a name for herself in the world of fashion.

What might be even more impressive is the fact that American Crime Story seems to have recreated the real dress Donatella wore, right down to the belt buckle. Here’s the real Donatella and Gianni back in 1993:

Ron Galella/WireImage/Getty Images

While the one in the show is by no means identical to the actual thing, it is pretty damn close. Real question, did Penelope Cruz get to keep it after ACS wrapped, or…?

7 Tips for Women on Avoiding Unwanted Advances During Business Travel

Tips for Women on Avoiding Unwanted Advances During Business TravelHere’s an interesting question for today: Do you often get unwanted attention when traveling for work? What are your best tips for women on avoiding unwanted advances during business travel? Does it happen most often in hotel bars, on the plane, at the airport, or elsewhere? From coworkers, clients — or strangers? Do you ever feel unsafe during those experiences, or are you mostly just annoyed when you’re trying to do some work, eat a meal, or simply get to where you’re going? tips for women on avoiding unwanted advances during business travel

The question of how to avoid being hit on when you’re traveling for work is especially relevant in light of all of the changes happening these days with sexual harassment, office culture, and the #metoo movement. As if flight delays, lost luggage, and jet lag weren’t enough, two in five women say they’ve experienced sexual harassment or unwelcome interactions while traveling, according to a recent survey

We acknowledge that it’s sad and wrong that there’s even a need for a post called “tips for women on avoiding unwanted advances during business travel” (and that many women feel like they have to change their behavior or appearance to avoid being hit on or harassed while traveling), but unfortunately, that’s the reality that most of us live in. (There also needs to be something to counter the pieces aimed at men with titles like “How to Pick Up Women on Airplanes” and “How to Pick Up Business Women in Hotel Bars.”) I also want to point out that we don’t want to imply that any woman should be blamed for unwanted attention if she doesn’t do the things below — we just thought it would be helpful to share some advice and ask readers for theirs.

Psst: We’ve previously shared business travel tips and tricks and discussed readers’ best self-defense tips, as well as given advice on how to handle a client hitting on you and how to stop a flirtatious boss from hitting on you. You may also want to check out our post on the best personal safety apps for women!

Here are some tips for avoiding unwanted advances during business travel:

  1. Get some mileage out of your RBF! While your resting bitch face may most often lead to people calling you a bitch behind your back, or compel men to tell you to smile, now you can use it to your advantage! Feel free to look as unapproachable as you want — hey, go wild and cross your arms too (while hoping it comes off as standoffish, not as “I’m so bored. Some unwanted male attention is just what I need!”) If ignoring a guy who’s staring at you doesn’t make him move on to his next target, return his gaze without changing your expression.
  2. Wear a fake wedding ring. This certainly won’t deter every man who’s thinking of approaching you, but it’ll work in some cases, and it’ll only cost you $ 10 or $ 15. Alternately, if you have a sparkly and conspicuous right-hand ring that will fit on your left hand, switch it when you need to. (Maybe you can use this as a justification to splurge and buy yourself one if you’ve been considering it…)
  3. Read a book. If you don’t have one handy, you can instead try to make it clear that you only have eyes for your Instagram feed. Be aware that this strategy can backfire (even when it’s not a strategy), as a writer for Cosmopolitan found when a guy saw her reading at a bar and insisted, “You’re just reading so some guy will hit on you.” (I mean, sure — that’s why I got my English degree.)
  4. Wear sunglasses. If you’re feeling especially uncomfortable, sunglasses can prevent a guy from believing your accidental eye contact is a conscious invitation. (Bonus: If you want to indulge in a bit of people-watching during that long layover, no one will be the wiser…)
  5. Use earbuds/headphones, whether or not you’re listening to something. On the other hand, a common safety tip for women is to only wear one earbud so that you can stay aware of your surroundings, but … that kind of defeats the purpose. You can always limit this strategy to situations and places where you feel reasonably safe, i.e., not walking back to your hotel alone at night.
  6. Resist any natural impulse to always be “nice.” Women are so often socialized to act “nice” and be people-pleasers, but if you’re tired of your polite/friendly behavior being interpreted as romantic interest, try to check yourself.
  7. If you’re traveling to a country where most women dress very differently than you normally do, try to blend in by dressing as conservatively as they do, within reason. (By the way, you can find a lot of reader comments on our post on what businesswomen should wear in the Middle East with specific recommendations for Qatar, Saudi Arabia, etc.) Again, please don’t read this as us saying, “Of course she was hit on all the time — look at what she was wearing!”

What are YOUR best tips for women on avoiding unwanted advances during business travel? Do you find that some strategies work better than others?

Here’s Why Travel Insurance Might Be a Good Investment During Flu Season

Picture this: Grandma’s 100th birthday is coming up, and the whole family is getting together to celebrate. You spend weeks scouting for the lowest flight prices, plunk down a few hundred dollars for tickets for you and the kids and get right down to packing.

The night before take off, you’ve double checked the bags, made sure to pack enough snacks and toys to keep your kids from ruining six hours of the guy in 25B’s life and fielded the fifteenth phone call from Aunt Donna, assuring her that yes, you’re going to be there — you wouldn’t miss it for the world.

And that’s when you can’t ignore it any more.

That little tickle in the back of your throat. The achy feeling creeping into every limb. The headache you’ve been ignoring all day, hoping it would disappear if you pretended hard enough it wasn’t real.

A quick trip to the walk-in clinic confirms the flu.

You get the medicine, but there’s no way you’re getting on that flight tomorrow (and we all thank you).

At this point you’re pretty devastated. I mean, it’s bad enough you’re missing Grandma’s birthday and the ensuing family reunion (not to mention you’ve got a rough few days ahead of you) — but the moldy cherry on top of this already pretty nasty ice cream sundae is you’re taking a loss on the price of those plane tickets.

Ouch.

Why Travel Insurance Might Be a Good Idea this Flu Season

A lot of factors go into deciding whether to purchase travel insurance when you book a flight.

How pricy are the tickets? Are you traveling with someone? (More people means a higher chance of something going wrong before your flight.) Are there multiple flights? Are you traveling during a season of inclement weather? Are your planned activities or destinations anything less than safe?

Generally, these considerations (and ultimately travel insurance) are important for people traveling abroad and doing things outside of their norm.

For domestic travel and shorter flights, it’s not often a necessary — or even recommended — expense.

But flu season is a different beast entirely.

Something to Consider

This year’s flu season is pretty bad.

While it’s not necessarily any more dangerous than in years past, it is more widespread. Plus, the flu vaccine is reportedly less effective this year (although it’s still worth getting!)

Heavily populated or crowded areas, such as cities and busy metro areas, are especially susceptible to the spreading virus — and travel hubs only serve as a convenient place for it to hitch a ride to a new destination.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that if you “are sick with symptoms of influenza-like illness,” you should stay home and not travel. Additionally, the CDC says to stay home until at least 24 hours have passed since your last fever broke without the use of fever reducing medicine.

To help you decide whether or not you should purchase travel insurance with your flight tickets this flu season, Squaremouth, a travel insurance comparison engine, has made a list of considerations travelers should take into account.

First, though, it’s important to note that travel insurance purchased after a person is already sick is useless. You have to have a policy in place before getting sick in order to be paid back your travel expenses.

With most travel insurance plans, however, travelers who come down with the flu after booking their flight and purchasing travel insurance can get their money back for canceled travel plans by submitting a doctor’s note with their claim.

Additionally, some travel insurance plans will cover your costs if a companion or even a non-traveling family member falls ill.

If you fall ill while on your trip, you can submit a claim for the expenses of traveling home early and for any unused part of your hotel stay.

If you’re traveling abroad, insurance is often a good idea anyway, but can be especially helpful if you require medical assistance or treatment while out of the country.

To help make your decision easier, Squaremouth has set up a help center on its website, where you’ll find a list of FAQs and helpful information.

Ultimately, whether or not you purchase travel insurance is entirely up to you. During a gnarly flu season, however, this decision becomes a little more significant.

Either way, it’s important to consider your plans and what you stand to lose if you fall ill and can’t make your flight — and then to make the best decision for you and your family.

Pray with us: Will NSYNC join Justin Timberlake during his Superbowl show?

Bye, bye, bye?

Throwback, much?

This article originally appeared on People. For more stories like this, visit people.com.

‘NSYNC fans may have to say “Bye Bye Bye” to dreams of a Super Bowl reunion.

On Feb. 4, Justin Timberlake, 36, will take the stage for the Super Bowl LII Pepsi Halftime show, and former band mate Joey Fatone appeared to shut down rumors of a regrouping. (JC Chasez, Chris Kirkpatrick and Lance Bass round out the famous fivesome.)

“I’m here [at dinner] right now — if I was doing something, I’d be at rehearsals right now, so obviously there’s your proof: nothing,” Fatone, 40, told TMZ this weekend of the potential ‘NSYNC reunion. “There’s nothing wrong with that! He’s doing his thing!”

Indeed, Timberlake just released two new songs, “Filthy” and “Supplies,” and will drop his new album, Man of the Woods, two days before the NFL championship game.

This will be the third time the former boy bander has performed at the Super Bowl. He and ‘NSYNC joined a star-studded lineup (including Aerosmith, Britney Spears, Mary J. Blige and Nelly) in 2001. And in 2004, Timberlake took the stage with Janet Jackson to perform “Rock Your Body,” which ended in the infamous wardrobe malfunction dubbed “nipplegate.”

In the years since the controversy, Timberlake and Jackson, 51, have made amends. But Fatone doesn’t expect Jackson to make an appearance next month, even if the duo’s reunion would fuel headlines.

“He’s not that kind of person,” Fatone said. “He’s not controversial like that. He is in a sense, but not in a sense to do it deliberately.”

Ashley Judd Says She Was Asked to Take Her Shirt Off During Her First Audition

Ashley Judd opened up about her experiences with abuse and gender bias in Hollywood at an emotional panel at the Sundance Film Festival on Sunday.

Joined by a group of diverse filmmakers and Hollywood power players, Judd and the panel discussed inclusion in Hollywood, addressing practical solutions to spur change in the industry and beyond.

Judd, who has been outspoken about the Harvey Weinstein scandal, opened up about her own history with both discrimination in film and sexual abuse.

“Well first of all, my first audition yielded a screen test and I was asked to take my shirt off. It was between another woman and me, and I said that isn’t about our acting, that’s about evaluating a pair of breasts. And the answer was not ‘no’ but ‘hell no,’” she recalled at the panel, titled Univision Communications Behind the Camera: Where Diversity Begins.

Discussing her new Sundance film Monster, which addresses themes of sexual assault, Judd said the storytelling resonated with her deeply. Speaking about her own willingness to discuss her history of sexual abuse, Judd said, “I understand it was never my shame and it was the perpetrators shamelessness which he put on me — and I’ve given that shame back to the perpetrator where it belongs.”

The actress previously discussed her depression and traumatic childhood in her 2011 memoir All That Is Bitter and Sweet.

She added, “And I talk about this from the perspective of from hurting to healing to now helping, but I have the exact same experience where this one summer I was incested and I thought that I had a relationship with an adult man and that it was fancy because he was wealthy. It was just the sophisticated affair and it was outright incest because he was married to a family member.”

RELATED: Women of Hollywood Attend Golden Globes Together in Support of the Time’s Up Movement

Judd noted that while Monster is a “must watch” movie, it was also very difficult for her to watch. “I mean this in a very complimentary way because of the authenticity of the film, I nearly threw up at one point and then a beat later the character throws up.

“I’m just very glad it that it was made and I’m glad that I had done my work because I was using my tools as I watched the film, and I know the filmmakers are very responsible and are going to have trigger warnings and have all types of support systems in place.”

To donate to the Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund, which will provide subsidized legal support to women and men in all industries who have experienced sexual harassment, assault, or abuse in the workplace, visit its GoFundMe page. Learn more about Time’s Up, an organization of women in entertainment combating sexual harassment and inequality, on its website.

She also spoke about the cost she has incurred from her recent activism against sexual harassment. “I have to know the hill on which I’m willing to die. And the hill on which I’m willing to die is equality, and if that means going to jail, being maligned, being defamed, having tremendous economic loss because I stood up to Harvey Weinstein — and it’s incalculable the amount of money I could have made that I didn’t — that’s the hill on which I’m willing to die.”

RELATED: Ashley Judd Meets Fellow Harvey Weinstein Accuser Mimi Haleyi at Women’s Media Center Awards

Judd was one of the first women to come forward accusing Weinstein of sexual harassment. Since her story broke, over 50 others have shared their own accounts of alleged abuse at the hands of the defaced producer.

Weinstein has been accused of sexual misconduct by over 50 women including Judd, Cara DelevingneGwyneth Paltrow, and Angelina Jolie since The New York Times and The New Yorker documented  decades of alleged sexual misconduct and sexual assault involving a number of women in detailed articles in October.

A spokesperson for Weinstein previously told PEOPLE in a statement, “Any allegations of non-consensual sex are unequivocally denied by Mr. Weinstein. Mr. Weinstein has further confirmed that there were never any acts of retaliation against any women for refusing his advances.”

Iranian and American Feminists Declare Solidarity During Iran-Wide Protests

As the largest wave of protests since the 2009 Green Movement erupted across more than 80 cities and towns in Iran in late December 2017 to early January of 2018, we again saw women’s active participation.

Women have played an active role in people’s fighting back against the economic hardship, increasing corruption, and oppressive rules in Iran, especially discrimination and violence on the bases of gender, sexuality, religion and ethnic differences. Furthermore, in the past 30 years, the women’s rights movement has become an essential part of the civil rights and pro-democracy struggles of Iranians under the theocratic regime.

However, as in many other Muslim-majority countries, Iranian feminists and gender activists frequently get caught within a double bind: On one hand, there is a patriarchal cultural and legal system reinforced by the ruling clerics and fundamentalists inside the country; on the other are interventionist forces in the West who exploit women’s rights for their own benefit.

On December 26, just a couple of days preceding the surge of  protests in Iran, the photo of a brave Iranian woman objecting to the compulsory hijab in Tehran went viral. The woman, seen standing on a platform with her white scarf tied to a pole she is waving gently and her head bare, was not the first one to defy the compulsory veiling; her action was part of the women’s rights movement in Iran, specifically the campaign for freedom of choice concerning women’s dress code.

A post shared by Masih Alinejad (@masih.alinejad) on

Unfortunately, some right-wing individuals or media outlets have used the aforementioned anti-compulsory hijab action to score points against American feminists who have been at the forefront of the resistance movement against the sexist actions and regressive policies shown by any governments in the U.S., past or present—especially those of President Trump. Some who have no record of advocacy for American women’s rights at home have suddenly become advocates of women’s rights abroad, particularly in Iran—and, ironically, have used their sudden fervor as an excuse to attack women’s groups, activists and feminist activism in efforts such as the Women’s March and the #MeToo movement. Of particular note were their attacks on some participants or organizers of the Women’s March who were wearing headscarves attempting to pit them against that brave Iranian woman who had taken off her headscarf.

We hereby raise our objection to such opportunistic and divisive tactics. The struggle of Iranian women should not be used to undermine the work of American feminists, especially those who have worked to build the largest day of an inclusive global protest in the history of the world. While the Iranian women protesting compulsory hijab policies reckon with them by removing their scarves, the campaign’s message is even more astute. Their campaign is one for a woman’s right to wear or not wear a headscarf by their own choosing—not by force and state imposition. Painting an American Muslim woman activist with a headscarf as a “fake feminist” and pitting her against that bare-headed Iranian woman is no more than a cynical attempt to cause conflict—and does nothing to further international solidarity and transnational sisterhood among women fighting for equal rights and freedom of choice.

The women challenging the compulsory hijab in Iran are fighting for their dignity—just as generations of Iranian women have since the first Iranian feminists began organizing in the early 20th century. Iranian women have been tirelessly challenging inequality in every possible area of their public and personal lives—from fighting unjust family laws, to the equal access to education and employment, for the right to play and watch sports in stadiums, to the right to participate in political leadership of their country as a presidential candidate. And so are the women marching in the U.S.—who are, with more energy than ever, fighting hard to end sexual harassment, demanding freedom of choice and challenging racism, homophobia, xenophobia and exploitation.

Just as Americans stood with Iranians and other immigrant groups opposing the unjust travel ban, American feminists have and will continue to stand with Iranian women in their fight for equality at home in Iran and abroad as immigrants.

We will not let our mutual struggles for freedom and justice be appropriated and used to attack other defenders of women’s rights. We will not allow the fight of Iranian women for freedom, equality and justice to be co-opted and used against women elsewhere.

We can, and must, ensure that our fight for women’s rights and freedoms are aligned and intersectional. We will continue to stand shoulder-to-shoulder in this fight for the common causes of democracy, equal rights, peace and non-violence—nationally and transnationally—across ideological or sectarian, racial, ethnic, sexual or national backgrounds.

Feminism is a movement built on solidarity and intersectionality, and our fight for gender equality knows no borders.

Michelangelo’s David Takes Center Stage During Pitti

Michelangelo’s David performed double duty Tuesday night in Florence when the iconic marble sculpture was the backdrop for an innovative — and striking — video installation.
In an event on the first night of the Pitti Uomo show, Italian fabric producer Lanificio Luigi Ricceri presented “Fabric as Art,” a presentation by multidisciplinary artist Felice Limosani.
The installation featured 10 of the mill’s fabrics that were projected on the wall behind — and then directly onto — the 17-foot-tall statue.
Following the seven-minute installation, guests were treated to cocktails and small bites at the Galleria dell’Accademia.

Pilots explain when to worry during a flight

So many of us fly when we go on vacation, and this has become more popular in recent times. However, despite it statistically being the safest way to travel, many people still have a fear of taking to the skies. It might seem daft to the rest of us, but a phobia of flying is actually a real thing, and this is something that can stop people from getting out and seeing the world.

It might seem like fear of flying is irrational, but for some people, it’s a really debilitating fear. Wouldn’t it be so much easier if we knew what to expect, and when we should actually be worrying? Well, the good news is that some pilots, experts in the air, have decided to share their inside knowledge, and put our minds at ease. So, here are some of the most common worries we have, and whether or not they are actually anything to worry about.

Turbulence

This is the main fear that a lot of passengers have when it comes to flying, and it’s also perhaps the most common occurrence. To put it bluntly, turbulence is perfectly normal and should be expected during a flight. The vast majority of the time it’s nothing to do with the plane, and everything to do with the weather, or cloud cover. Through all of human history, only one plane has ever crashed as a result of turbulence, but that’s it. Besides, pilots are not permitted to fly if the conditions are too treacherous, so this is not something you need to worry about.

Engines cutting out

We reckon this one might be a fear that’s been compounded by movies showing engines cutting out a lot. And actually, the engine cutting out doesn’t mean a huge amount anyway – you will still remain in the air, as the plane will glide on its own. The plane will still soar, much like a bicycle will continue to move after you stop pedaling. This is nothing to fret over, and you need to make sure you don’t worry so much, especially about something that has a highly improbable chance of actually happening.

Smoke in the cabin

Okay, we can definitely understand why this one would be so alarming. But, before you go into complete meltdown, let’s consult the experts. Smoking in the cabin might point to a fire, but that is actually really, really unlikely. The most common cause of this is a broken seal that keeps fumes out of the air-conditioning or oil leaking. Either way, these things are nothing to get too concerned about, despite how they might look. It may not smell or look pleasant, but it’s almost never anything to worry about.

We understand that being on a plane can be daunting because you are not in control of anything. We also understand that certain issues seem like they’re going to head toward a worst-case scenario. But, most of the time, the things you’re freaking out about on a flight are things you don’t need to worry about at all.

Books that will make you smart during a single flight

How do you pass the time on a flight these days? Well, a lot of people spend time listening to music or playing on their Nintendo DS. Some people will watch the inflight movie, or enjoy a drink or two. Many of us sleep if it’s a long-haul flight, but, the activity we would recommend the most is reading. These days, especially if you have a Kindle, you can take so many different books with you on vacation.

Yes, we prefer having the real thing as well, but a Kindle means you can pack numerous books without taking up any space. Now, whether you’ve decided to bring an e-reader or an actual paperback you might want suggestions for something to read during the flight. Personally, we love a good crime thriller, but we know some people like to educate themselves. So, here are a few books you can read that will make you smarter during a single flight.

Thing Explainer: Complicated Stuff in Simple Words

This book is the perfect choice for anyone who doesn’t have the time to look into and try to figure out complicated issues. The book, written by Randall Munroe, uses simplistic words and pictures to help readers understand and figure out explanations for complicated and difficult subjects. You could look at this book like an idiots guide to all the things you ever wanted to know about but found the jargon too complicated. This 64-page book is the perfect choice and can be absorbed over the course of a single flight.

The War of Independence

Written by John Fiske, and published in 1890, this is one of the most important and interesting books you will ever read. The 115-page book explores the American Revolution and the War of Independence that helped shape America into the country she is today. The book is interesting, absorbing, and not too daunting like many of those gigantic historical tomes can sometimes be. Fiske takes a look at some aspects of the war that are often glossed over and allows readers a fresh perspective on an old topic. And, the best thing about it is that you can pick it up for free as an eBook.

Real Artists Don’t Starve

If you are a creative person who has ever doubted going down the creative career route, this book is an absolute must-read for you. It’s the ideal companion piece for anyone who loves to get creative, and it explores the competitive benefits of creativity. It’s a fascinating read and will be useful for helping you change your approach to business and your career. Jeff Goins shares his wisdom and views on the creative world and suggests that creative individuals need to harness their talents for the future.

Prisoners of Geography

Ever wish you were a little more au fait with modern politics? Well, this is the perfect book to look at if you want to broaden your knowledge of the political landscape. This Sunday Times bestseller by Tim Marshall uses maps to show you how geography and ideology have combined to give us the current political climate. Everything you ever wanted to know about global politics is neatly presented in this accessible book – it’s a must read!

This represents just a small selection of some of the coolest books you can read on a plane journey. We like books that can be finished in one go, or that we can pick up and put down, and dip into whenever we want to. We also feel the subject matter of these books makes them ideal if you want to expand your horizons and broaden your knowledge in a single flight.

6 Reasons to Sell Your Home During the Holidays

For homesellers, the holiday shopping season can bring much more than just buying gifts, eating turkey, and sharing good tidings of joy.

The period between Thanksgiving and New Year’s can potentially be “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year” for sellers for multiple reasons, experts say.

Those reasons include the ability to reach more motivated buyers, face less competition, and acquire offers from individuals seeking tax benefits for the upcoming year.

Of course, the traditional wisdom is that spring and summer are the best times to sell and there are fewer buyers during the colder months. Yet others contend that now makes good business sense to sell before the home-buying season kicks off in the spring when housing inventory rises and sellers face more competition.

In fact, according to a study by real estate brokerage firm Redfin, homes listed in the winter have a 9 percentage point greater likelihood of selling, sell a week faster, and sell for 1.2 percentage points more than homes listed in any other season.

Here are several key reasons to consider selling your home during the holidays:

More Time to Search for Homes Online

Many potential buyers take vacation during the holiday shopping season, giving them more time to perform home searches and see your listing.

People Relocating are Often Anxious to Close

With companies often relocating workers from one location to another, these buyers typically need to find a home fast. These folks often are willing to push away savings and comfort, making them ideal buyers for sellers. Additionally, January is frequently the month when transfers occur. Since many of these buyers can’t wait until spring, sellers can potentially sell those buyers before then.

Lack of Competition

Many sellers perceive the holiday season as a bad time to sell, causing them to take homes off the market or not list them. That can work in a seller’s favor, particularly if there is a low inventory of homes like yours available to be purchased.

Tax Credits Boost Activity

Tax and financial benefits make winter a good time to sell. Many people, including first-time homebuyers, are eligible for multiple tax credits during the upcoming year if they buy a house before the current year ends. Some families take money from IRAs with no penalty to help children buy their first home. Others are rushing to buy before the tax benefits fall into the approaching year.

More Foreign Buyers

A rising number of homebuyers from other countries are becoming more infatuated with the U.S. housing market. They often don’t follow the same schedule or calendar Americans do, making them more serious about house hunting during the holiday season than others.

Position Yourself to Buy Later

If you are able to sell now, it will provide an opportunity for you to buy during the spring or summer when more homes are listed.

Tiffany Haddish Wants to Know if NeNe Leakes Is ‘Crazy’ For Real, Accuses Her of Being Drunk During Her Comedy Show: ‘I Got Concerned’ [Video]

Tiffany Haddish stopped by Bravo’s ‘Watch What Happens Live’ alongside Cynthia Bailey and had a question about Cynthia’s ‘The Real Housewives of Atlanta’ co-star, NeNe Leakes.

When a caller asked Cynthia how she felt about NeNe’s shade towards her friendship with Kenya, Cynthia laughed it off as no big deal. Tiffany then asked Cynthia if NeNe is ‘crazy for real?’

“Is she crazy for real? You know I did a comedy show with her,” said Tiffany.”That was a mess.”

Andy asked for clarity:

“Did you think she was funny?”

To which Tiffany replied:

“She was funny at first, but then she got drunk. And then it got —  I got concerned.”

Just as she was about to spill the tea, Andy cut to commercial break. We don’t know what show Tiffany was talking about, but the streets think it may have been the show where NeNe made those distasteful rape comments.

The Toxin Messing With Your Thyroid During Pregnancy

Thyroid health is vital during pregnancy, but a new report found that mothers exposed to a toxin found in water, milk and other chemicals can be harmful during gestation. The study, which was presented at the Society for Endocrinology annual conference, found that when mothers are exposed to higher levels of the environmental pollutant perchlorate, it lowered absorption of iodine from the blood into the thyroid. That’s where it is needed to make T4, the hormone vital for Baby’s brain development. And that’s why researchers say to limit exposure to it.

But can you protect yourself and your baby from this chemical? Is it really harmful?

More: Let’s Talk About Constipation During Pregnancy

Dr. Bea Knight, a research midwife/nurse involved with the study, said more detailed studies are needed to see if perchlorate exposure causes damage to health. If so, defining acceptable levels of it will be needed. But for now, here’s what you need to know:

  • It’s hard to limit exposure. Knight said women may find it hard to lower exposure because the “contamination is fairly widespread.”
  • Get your iodine. Knight said pregnant women must make sure they get adequate iodine in their diets. “The impact of perchlorate exposure is worse in presence of iodine deficiency,” she noted.
  • The government is on it — sorta. The topic has certainly turned up in the news and between lawmakers, but groups such as the Environmental Defense Fund say more needs to be done to understand its effects on people — and protect them from it.
  • It’s everywhere. While perchlorate occurs naturally, it’s also made in manufacturing processes, the Environmental Protection Agency reports. Here’s how vast it is: It is used in everything from matches and flares to fertilizers and rocket fuel. As a result, it can get into milk and water — and that’s where exposure may be a problem.
  • You may be able to protect your family from it. Find perchlorate in your water? Use a reverse-osmosis home water filter to lower the levels and drink filtered water if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, the Environmental Working Group advises. (Make sure your kids drink filtered water too.)

The recent study did get the topic back into the headlines, so hopefully this means we’ll get more information that can keep us and our kiddos safe.

The NFL Tried to Bribe Players with $100 Million to Stop Kneeling and Protesting During Games, It Didn’t Work

The NFL tried to buy their players off with almost $ 100 million so they’d stop protesting at games — but no deal was made.

via TMZ:

The NFL recently proposed a deal in which they’d contribute $ 89 million over seven years to 2 organizations focused on African-American causes, as well as to the Players Coalition so they could use the money for whatever causes they wanted.

In exchange, the NFL wanted the National Anthem protests to end — but the deal seems to have failed. Many players continued to kneel and demonstrate during this week’s games.

The L.A. Chargers’ left tackle Russel Okung raised his fist during the National Anthem Sunday, and the Oakland Raiders’ Marshawn Lynch remained seated for the song. L.A. Rams player Robert Quinn raised his fist as well, and other players linked arms in solidarity.

At least 6 other players between Miami, New Orleans and San Francisco all took a knee after some of them publicly raised issues with the proposed deal from their bosses.

We’re happy the players kneeled stood their ground.

Matt Lauer Not Mentioned During NBC’s Rockefeller Tree Lighting: Details

Trying to stay merry! NBC’s annual Rockefeller Tree Lighting went on without Matt Lauer following his firing on Wednesday, November 29. In fact, the scandal surrounding the veteran journalist, 59, wasn’t brought up at all.

Lauer’s former colleagues — Savannah Guthrie, Hoda Kotb and Al Roker — hosted the event, which took place outside the Today show studios in NYC.

The trio appeared to be upbeat and cheerful during the special amid the controversy. An onlooker tells Us Weekly that during commercial or pre-taped breaks the crowd was quite mellow.

Stars who took part in the event included Gwen Stefani, Harry Connick Jr., Seal, Jennifer Nettles, Leslie Odom Jr., Train, Pentatonix and, of course, The Radio City Rockettes.

Just hours earlier, Guthrie and Kotb announced during the Today show that Lauer had been fired after the network received a detailed complaint from an employee about inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace by Lauer.

“While it is the first complaint about his behavior in the over 20 years he’s been at NBC News, we were also presented with reason to believe this may not have been an isolated incident,” NBC News Chairman Andy Lack wrote in a memo to staff early Wednesday. “Our highest priority is to create a workplace environment where everyone feels safe and protected and to ensure that any actions that run counter to our core values are met with consequences, no matter who the offender. We are deeply saddened by this turn of events.”

Since then, Variety and The New York Times published stories with several women alleging that Lauer sexually harassed them. On Thursday, 24 hours after the news broke, Lauer released a statement.

“There are no words to express my sorrow and regret for the pain I have caused others by words and actions. To the people I have hurt, I am truly sorry. As I am writing this I realize the depth of the damage and disappointment I have left behind at home and at NBC. Some of what is being said about me is untrue or mischaracterized but there is enough truth in these stories to make me feel embarrassed and ashamed. I regret that my shame is now shared by the people I cherish dearly,” he said, which was read by Guthrie on NBC. “Repairing the damage will take a lot of time and soul searching and I’m committed to beginning that effort. It is now my full time job. The last two days have forced me to take a very hard look at my own troubling flaws. It’s been humbling. I am blessed to be surrounded by the people I love. I thank them for their patience and grace.”

9 items to keep on hand during cold & flu season

by

Laura Falin

posted in Life

I will never, ever forget my first baby’s first illness.

He had a mild fever and was generally miserable, but it passed within 24 hours and he was fine (thank goodness!). Of course now, after weathering all kinds of sicknesses with four babies, I would know not to panic and I probably wouldn’t call the emergency pediatrician hotline in the middle of the night. I might, though. Because you know what? It doesn’t matter how many times my kids get sick, or even how old they are — I still worry every time. I still check on them when they’re sleeping. And I still don’t really sleep well myself until they’re better.

One lesson I’ve learned the hard way — after countless times stumbling into the drugstore in my pajamas in the middle of the night — is to take inventory of my medicine cabinet every fall. Of course, kids get sick year-round, but I really want to have the essential cold & flu remedies on hand this time of year. Here’s what I make sure I have in stock:

1. Humidifier

We always get coughs and sore throats, and a good cool-mist humidifier is key. Be sure to clean and dry them regularly so bacteria and mold can’t grow. We have used these animal-shaped humidifiers for several years – in fact, we have a frog set up right now in one of the kids’ rooms!

Buy it: $ 44.74

2. Nasal Aspirator

Snot sucker. Booger bulb. Whatever you want to call it, this thing is so cheap and simple…and so worth it. Keep on hand for babies and little kids with runny or stuffed up noses. There are plenty of fancy ones on the market, but I always used the plain rubber bulb one, and it worked great.

Buy it: $ 5.95/3-pack

3. Saline drops

For babies with stuffed up noses, a few saline drops followed by the nasal aspirator helps to clear things out. Now that my kids are older, they get frequent bloody noses during the dry winter months, and saline solution helps prevent that as well.

Buy it: $ 3.79

4. Thermometer

There’s a great article here on BabyCenter about what kind of thermometer to buy for your child. We used this ear thermometer for all of our kids once they were a year old (before that, we used the rectal thermometers). Be sure to buy an extra set of disposable covers so you can replace them after each use, and make sure to have extra batteries on hand.

Buy it: $ 35.33

5. Children or Infant Tylenol

Check with your doctor before administering any medicine to your baby or child. But I’ve found it’s best to have the Tylenol in the cabinet ahead of time, so if the pediatrician gives me the okay, I can give it to my child right then, rather than having to head out to the store.

Buy it: $ 8.77

6. Children or Infant Motrin

There have been occasions when our pediatrician has told me to use one instead of the other, or different medications at different times. I like to have both on hand, just in case.

Buy it: $ 5.97

7. Pedialyte

A useful drink to have around, because, when a tummy bug hits, the last thing you want to do is leave the house. And since stomach viruses spread fast around here, I try to have several of these bottles stored away.

Buy it: $ 4.79

8. Hand sanitizer

One of the best things you can do to fight colds and flu is try and keep everyone from getting sick in the first place. I’ve interviewed several doctors over the years for stories on helping kids stay healthy, and the first thing every single one of them says is to have children wash their hands frequently. Use soap and sing the “Happy Birthday” song to wash long enough. Have them use antibacterial hand sanitizer if they can’t wash their hands. I get each of my kids a little individual hand sanitizer bottle to clip on their backpacks for school.

Buy it: $ 10.99/8 1-oz. sanitizers

9. Lysol Disinfecting Wipes

Also, when someone’s sick at home, try and keep it from spreading by disinfecting. Think about surfaces kids touch a lot — door handles and knobs and faucets. I keep a box of wipes in each area of my house with a sink so I can give it a good wipe-down whenever I’m in there.

Buy it: $ 17.48/4 80-ct. boxes

Tips to Help Stay Out of the Red During Holiday Shopping Season

Are you going to be naughty or nice when it comes to spending during the upcoming holiday shopping season?

A new poll shows that shoppers plan to splurge big time this year on such costs.

The findings from Gallup last month indicates that Americans plan to spend an average of $ 906 this year on Christmas gifts, up from $ 785 in October 2016. The 2017 figure reflects the largest annualized gain in a decade or since 2007, the market research firm reports.

(Image: iStock/M_a_y_a)

More precisely, 34% plan to spend at least $ 1,000 on gifts this Christmas, 23% will spend between $ 500 and $ 999, 28% expect to shell out $ 100 and $ 499, and 3% will spend less than $ 100. Some 6% of U.S. adults say they won’t spend anything on Christmas presents, suggesting they don’t celebrate the holiday.

Asked how their expected spending compares with last year, a record-low 16% say they will spend less and 17% report they will spend more. As is typical, the largest portion, now 65%, say their spending will be about the same. Interestingly, Gallup reports 2017 is the first year since 2000 that roughly equal percentages plan to spend more versus less. More often, a much higher portion of consumers has said they plan to spend less rather than more.

The higher optimism for this year’s holiday spending is most evident among middle- and lower-income adults. But the question is if the enthusiasm will be sustained?

Gallup’s initial measure of consumers’ 2017 holiday shopping plans doesn’t differentiate between traditional and online purchases. Gallup also warns the spending plans among Americans often change as the season progresses. It will provide a second update on holiday spending intentions in mid-November.

At the same time, shoppers can be kind to themselves by being prudent with holiday spending. Here are some ways to help do that in November and December:

Establish a budget.

This may include setting a spending cap or determining how much you plan to spend on each person. Leave some wiggle room to cover expenses like buying that special present for your mom or last-minute gifts. Don’t forget to budget in other expenses you might face with holiday travel, parties, and holiday-themed events.

Keep your eye on spending.

A budget won’t work if you don’t monitor your spending. Consider establishing a Christmas fund in a dedicated account at a bank or credit union. This can help stop you from digging into our regular checking account to pay for holiday gifts. Install an app on your phone with your Christmas account. This can allow you to check your balance and spending when and where you want.

Use cash instead of plastic.

Credit cards can boost holiday financial stress some as the bills arrive. One advantage of using cash is it can help you only withdraw the amount you budgeted for to buy gifts. It might limit what you can buy for the holiday season, but your wallet will thank you.

Do your homework on where to shop.

Price gifts online and compare those prices by phone by calling retailers. Consider if it’s cheaper to have gifts shipped by online retailers versus shopping at a nearby mall or store.

Use coupons.

Coupons still come in newspapers and direct mail. But don’t be afraid to check out stores where you regularly shop for electronic coupons. Consider getting on a retailer’s email list to get coupons or information on upcoming specials. Online sites like CouponCabin.com and BradsDeals.com have promotional codes that allow you to type in for discounts that can help save money.

Send out e-cards.

Many of them are free and don’t require a stamp. They can be sent to friends and family, a nice way to wish someone happy holidays and trim your budget.

Bestow something from the heart.

Providing something homemade can provide a loved one or friend a nice gift. It might be cookies or some other tasty treat. Examine making up a personal gift, perhaps something like mittens, a scrapbook, pottery or beaded necklaces, bracelets or earrings.

7 Tips for Spending and Banking During Your European Vacation

Entre vostre PIN, si us plau.

Those six little Catalan words cost me more than $ 50.

I’d just arrived in Barcelona after a two-legged, sleepless redeye, but I was prepared — or so I thought. Despite my exhaustion, I wasn’t about to dish out a fistful of crisp euros on a cab ride when I could just take the airport bus for just €5.90. After 12 hours of travel time, what was 40 extra minutes?

But although I’d long since had the chip card international travel necessitates, I’d overlooked a crucial step: setting up the personal identification number, or PIN, required at teller-less credit-card transaction points in Europe.

At my early arrival time, there was no way to purchase bus tickets aside from the automated kiosk — and that pesky PIN prompt kept flashing on the screen, no matter which card I used. It was 5 a.m. EST on a Sunday, so calling customer service was out.

Unless I was ready to take a very long walk with all my luggage in tow, I was going to have to capitulate to the pricy taxi line.

Which I did. To the tune of €50 — almost $ 60 in U.S. dollars.

When you think about preparing your finances for a big trip, you might assume it’s all about saving up a big enough budget.

And to be sure, you want some extra padding if you’re going to be globe-trotting — both for once-in-a-lifetime splurges and unexpected travel surprises. (Trust me, they happen. A lot.)

But aside from patiently stashing away cash, there’s some other money-related homework you need to do if you want to smoothly transition your wallet to a new part of the world.

Here’s everything I did to prepare my finances for my big European excursion — and what I wish I’d figured out before my flight.

1. Get a Chip-Enabled Credit Card with No Foreign Transaction Fees

Even if you usually rely on cash, it’s important to have multiple ways to pay when you’re far from home. But when it comes to overseas travel, you don’t just need plastic: You need the right kind of plastic.

You might already be familiar with the EMV credit-card system, otherwise known as “chip” cards. The U.S. was a little late to this particular party, but they’ve been more or less the global standard for years, so if you’re headed to a far-off, foreign destination, you need one.

But that’s not all. You don’t want to pay an extra percentage every time you swipe — or, excuse me, insert — your card, so you need to look for a credit card that doesn’t have a foreign-transaction fee.

And while you’re card-shopping, it’s a good idea to bear in mind which vendors have the widest acceptance in your destination country (most likely Visa and Mastercard). I use my Discover card almost exclusively at home, but it’s a little trickier to do so in Europe.

Penny Hoarder bonus points if you use a travel-rewards credit card to earn frequent flyer miles or other valuable perks so you can afford even more adventures. Fun fact: My flight from Florida to Spain cost me a total of $ 6 — no, that’s not a typo — simply because of miles I earned on my credit card.

2. Set Up (and memorize) the PIN

Just don’t say I didn’t warn you.

3. Let Your Bank(s) Know Where You’re Going.

It’s actually a pretty awesome thing that your bank and credit-card providers keep tabs on your transactions’ whereabouts. It helps protect you from identity theft.

But if they see a charge in Germany when you’re supposed to be in Oregon, you’ll likely find your transaction disapproved… and face a lengthy phone-tree journey to get your card unlocked again. (Which is double-ick if you’re on a plan that charges crazytown prices for international calls! Check out low-cost, traveler-friendly cellphone and data providers like Google Fi if you’re going to be doing this jetset thing a lot.)

Fortunately, it’s really easy to set travel advisories ahead of your trip — most banks allow you to do it online, no tinny hold music required. Just be sure to repeat the process for every card and account you plan on using!

4. Take Out Some Foreign Currency Ahead of Time

Not every frequent traveler agrees with me on this, because depending on the specifics at your bank, it can be cheaper to use an ATM at your destination.

But I was certainly glad I had that €50 note to hand my taxi driver after my PIN snafu, even though it pained me to part with it. You never know what’s going to happen, and cash is, well, cash.

Here’s an important rule: Don’t utilize foreign-currency exchange kiosks in places like airports or malls. Ever. They’re convenient, to be sure, but not worth the convenience tax you’ll pay in the form of fees and a poor exchange rate.

Your best bet is to go straight to your bank and put in a foreign-currency order. They’ll likely charge a small handling fee (at my bank, it was about $ 7 for €400), but it’s a better deal than you’ll get in more visible, tourist-oriented places — and it’s worth it to have some cash on hand.

If you’re taking a relatively short trip, this is also a good way to budget. Take out a certain amount in cash foreign currency and promise yourself that that’s all your restaurant or “fun” money for the trip, only using your credit card for necessities and emergencies.

5. Learn Which International Banks and Partners

If you do need to take out more cash once you arrive, you’ll want to find out which international banks your home branch partners with and use them and their ATMs exclusively. Otherwise, you’ll be assessed an extra fee for the transaction — in my bank’s case, $ 5. (Not a huge amount, but I’d still rather spend it on a copa de cava.)

It’s not too hard to get the information; many banks publish them online, or you could ask a branch representative.

One thing I *didn’t* realize before I left, however: Even when you use the “right” bank, you may be charged an additional percentage of the amount you take out in foreign currency.

This led to some frustrated scowling when I checked my bank statement after my first trip to the ATM. Had I known taking out cash at my destination would come with a 3% upcharge, I would have taken out even more ahead of time.

6. Choose the Currency of the Country

When you use your credit card in a foreign country, you may be asked if you’d like to pay in U.S. dollars or euros (or yen, or whatever).

This might seem like a convenience. Now you understand exactly how much you’re spending!

But it’s actually a service called dynamic currency conversion, and it comes at a cost. You don’t know it, but there’s an upcharge built into that dollar amount.

Long story short: Follow the old adage and do as the Romans do — and pay in their currency whenever you have the option.

7. Learn the Country’s Financial Customs

You don’t want to be scrambling with your smartphone at the end of a meal to figure out how much of a tip is appropriate — or if you even need to leave one at all. Same goes for taxi rides, hotel porters, housekeepers and spa services.

You should also look up whether there are scenarios in which you’ll need cash. For example, I got on a last-minute train home from a remote village in Spanish wine country and was mildly surprised when the conductor told me I couldn’t pay con mi tarjeta.

Good thing I had some extra euros stashed in my wallet… although I have to admit, Priorat wouldn’t have been the worst place to get stranded.

This is How to Keep Your Identity Safe During the Holiday Shopping Season

We can all agree: It’s OK to play Christmas music now.

Put up your tree, string lights along the roof, frost cookies and spend an entire weekend blowing up that giant yard Santa.

Unless you’re that über-planner in the family who’s been slowly gathering gifts since May, now’s also the time to start shopping.

Yes, I know the holidays can get costly. We’ve got tons of tips to help you save money on everything.

But I actually want to talk about one other giant holiday-shopping bummer a lot of people don’t think about until it’s too late: Identity theft.

I know: It’s the holiday season, right? If scammers had a heart, they’d take the month off and let us all just enjoy our gifts and cocoa.

Unfortunately, they don’t — that’s kinda their deal. And this is a great time to be an identity thief, because tons of people are swiping cards for tons of transactions over the next few weeks.

Each transaction is an opportunity for a scammer to steal your information.

That’s some next-level Grinching.

How to Get Free Identity-Theft Protection

If you want to keep your information safe this holiday season, you’ve got a few options:

  • Go off-grid and carry tons of cash (safe for your information, maybe… but not so safe for your, um, safety).
  • Learn a bunch of new skills and hand-make all your gifts (hope everyone in the family likes that same orange-blue-brown knit beanie in the one size).
  • Monitor your credit to stop scammers before they take a Caribbean vacation in your name.

I’m going to go ahead and recommend that last one, because muggers are basically old-timey identity thieves, and no one in your family likes the beanie; they’re just trying to be nice.

I use the free service from Credit Sesame, which will send me an email or text alert if someone tries to apply for credit in my name. And it comes with $ 50,000 of identity theft insurance and fraud assistance in case something goes wrong.

(P.S. If someone’s able to get a loan in my name, I’d like to know their secret, because my credit stinks.)

In addition to the fraud protection, Credit Sesame lets you see your credit score and free credit report card — so you can keep tabs on those credit card bills after the shopping frenzy is over.

Want to protect your identity from Grinches? Take a few minutes to sign up for Credit Sesame here.

Amazon’s Employees To Strike in Italy During Black Friday

MILAN – Amazon will likely have to face more than just the usual delivery frenzy in Italy during Black Friday.
According to a statement released on Thursday by the Fist-Cisl trade union, Amazon’s employees based in the distribution and logistic plant located in Castel San Giovanni, in Lombardy, will protest against long working hours and low salaries on Nov. 24.
Fist-Cisl general secretary Pierangelo Ranieri pointed out that the significant growth of the e-commerce business in Italy should push trade unions and companies to define a collective agreement guaranteeing employees sustainable working hours and adequate salaries.
Around 30 percent of the plant’s employees are expected to protest on Friday, according to Francesca Benedetti, general secretary of Fisascat-Cisl Piacenza, which announced the strike.
The trade union is also organizing a demonstration outside the Amazon plant where representatives of the labor union will be present to show their support to workers. “Employees need to feel protected because they worry about the company’s reactions,” Benedetti said.
She also added that “after a negotiation that lasted two years with Amazon, which did not take into account our requests nor did it provide any solution, it was the right time to debate issues such as health and safety conditions and

‘Great Disrespect!’ Donald Trump Wants the NFL to Suspend Marshawn Lynch if He Sits During the Anthem Again

U.S. President Donald Trump suggested Oakland Raiders’ Marshawn Lynch should be suspended by the NFL for the rest of the season if he “sits down to boos” during the national anthem again.

Trump showed no sign of letting go of his attack of NFL players taking a knee after Lynch sat down during the Star-Spangled Banner but then stood for the Mexican national anthem, before a game against the New England Patriots in Mexico City on Sunday. On Monday, the President tweeted that running back’s actions amounted to “great disrespect” and that the “NFL should suspend him for remainder of season. Attendance and ratings way down.”

According to Associated Press, Lynch has not stood for the national anthem since his return from retirement this season.

Quarterback Colin Kaepernick first kneeled in 2016 in protest against shootings of black men by white police officers. Some American football players have continued the protest in defiance of Trump, who has been vocal of his opposition to the action.

Ashanti Slams Fans Throwing Money At Her During Concert

While putting on a show for fans in Hawaii on Saturday, Ashanti stopped mid-song to slam a group of fans for making it rain on her while she performed a choreographed lap dance.

Peep the moment via the clip below.

“I’m gonna need you to stop throwing that money,” Ashanti can be heard saying to a fan in the crowd after calling for the music to stop. “I’m not a f—–g stripper, okay?”

The fans were reportedly employees of a nearby strip club called Ballarrina, TMZ reported.

In an IG post, the owner — Dyamin Thomas — said … “WAIT Ashanti ain’t that you in your background video throwing money? And aren’t you giving a lap dance? Lmfao .. she ain’t say nothing to me but you gonna pick on the small white boy lol my Dj? Damn.”

Watch below:

Ashanti and Ja Rule performed over the weekend at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center in Honolulu. Ja seemed more than happy about the extra dough onstage. Not as happy as his DJ, though.

Would you believe this isn’t the first time Ashanti has admonished her audience. Back in June of this year we reported this incident:

‘WHAT THE F*** THEY DOING BACK THERE?’ ASHANTI CURSES OUT CREW MEMBER MID-PERFORMANCE (WATCH)

*Ashanti had no problem stopping her performance cold and using colorful language to express her frustration at a gig in San Luis Obispo, Calif. on Thursday when something went wrong with her video screen.

According to TMZ, the singer kicked off the R&B Jam Series at the Alex Madonna Expo Center and was mid-performance of “Baby” when she suddenly stopped the show and ordered the video board turned off.
