Money Mondays: Get Ahead Of The Game By Saving For College Early

YOU JOIN US TODAY TO DISCUSS A SURVEY ABOUT COLLEGE SAVINGS. WHAT DOES IT TELL US?

According to Sallie Mae’s 2018 report, How America Saves for College, parents are making progress when it comes to saving for their children’s college education. The report was based on a survey of more than 2,000 parents of children under 18 and found that the average amount saved is $ 18,135. That is 10% more than the $ 16,380 average in 2016 and is the highest level of savings the survey has found since 2013.

THIS IS GREAT NEWS! WHAT ELSE DID THE SURVEY FIND?

There were two additional positive findings in the survey. First, parents are getting more realistic about paying for college. Specifically, many parents are coming to believe that the cost of college shouldn’t fall only on them, especially as the costs rise. Respondents said they expect to cover about one-third of the total cost of their child’s college costs.

Additionally, close to 60 percent of parents said they expected their child to pay for part of their education, up from around 50 percent in 2016. As parents become more realistic about the costs of college and what they can contribute, I believe we can expect to see more of them planning and focusing on other resources, so that is good news.

On top of this, there was another excellent finding in the survey: Parents are shying away from mortgaging their future to pay for their child’s education. Just 10% of parents said they plan to tap their retirement savings for their child’s education, down from 20 percent in 2016. Let’s hope this the start of a trend, Tom. As I have said many times, there are loans for college, but not for retirement.

WERE THERE ANY AREAS OF CONCERN?

Absolutely. First, the cost of college continues to move higher. According to the College Board, the average private nonprofit college charged $ 46,950 for tuition, fees and room and board in the 2017-2018 academic year, it is expected to continue to climb. This means that even as parents are saving more, they are not necessarily making a dent in the overall shortfall.

On top of that, just 39% of respondents reported that they were planning and saving for their child’s college expenses while, 17% said they were saving but not planning, and 44% said they were not saving at all.

Finally, and of particular importance for our community, there continues to be a significant gap between Black and Hispanic parents and white parents when it comes to college savings. The survey found the average college savings for Black respondents was $ 10,702 this year, compared to $ 23,460 for white families. This is another way the persistent wealth gap between Black and white Americans impacts our children’s future.

IF WE ARE ALREADY SAVING FOR COLLEGE, OR WE WANT TO START, WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND?

The most important thing to do is keep saving, or if you haven’t already, to start saving. Once you do, then you want to concentrate on growing that money. The two most common vehicles to do this are 529 plans and Coverdell Education Savings Accounts. 529 plans are offered in various states and can be used for undergraduate or graduate studies.

In these plans, you’re typically given a menu of investment options to choose from. Keep in mind, 529 plans do come with some restrictions. Funds can be withdrawn tax-free only for qualified education expenses such as tuition, books, and room and board.

Coverdell Education Savings Accounts also allow your investments to grow tax-free, as long as they are used for qualified education expenses. But, money from Coverdell accounts can also be used for K-12 expenses, and you can choose your own investment options.

Coverdell accounts are limited to a maximum of $ 2,000 per year, while 529 plans generally have higher contribution limits. Remember, if funds from 529 plans or Coverdell accounts are not used for qualified education expenses, there can be both taxes and penalties.

Remember, you want to be clear on the goals and objectives for these accounts. Consult your financial advisor to determine which type of account makes the most sense for your situation.

Early Menopause Can Affect Your Memory

Women who are older when they enter menopause may have a slight advantage when it comes to keeping key memory skills as they age, British researchers report.

The study was decades long and tracked outcomes for more than 1,300 women. The research showed that a woman entering menopause 10 years later than her peers was able to recall one extra word on a 15-word test for every year as she grew older.

No such link was seen between menopause timing and thought-processing speed. But the verbal recall finding held up whether or not a woman took hormone replacement therapy after menopause.

That said, the authors stressed that the jury is still out on whether that improved word recall translates into a similar dip in dementia risk.

“For women whose periods cease naturally — not due to surgical or medical intervention — they usually experience menopause between 45 and 55 years of age,” explained study author Diana Kuh. She is a professor of life course epidemiology with the MRC Unit for Lifelong Health and Ageing at University College London.

Among the participants tracked, natural menopause began at an average of 51 years of age.

“We measured thinking skills by the number of words women remembered after being shown a list of 15 words, repeating this test three times,” said Kuh. The total maximum score would be 45. “The women took this test four times between ages 43 and 69,” she said.

In the end, said Kuh, “my research team found an association between later menopause and better verbal memory across adult life, even after taking account of many other factors that affect adult memory.”

The study participants were tracked as early as birth in 1946, and they took memory and thought-processing tests as they hit the ages of 43, 53, 60 to 64, and 69.

On average, word recall did decline with age across the board, regardless of the timing of menopause. For example, while women could recall an average of 25.8 words on the verbal memory test at age 43, that figure dipped to 23.3 words by age 69.

Kuh and her colleagues reported their findings online April 11 in the journal Neurology.

Still, Kuh cautioned that “an observational study is not able to demonstrate cause and effect,” so the finding can only be characterized as an “association.”

With that in mind, she and her team are already embarking on a search for any evidence suggesting that menopause onset might be linked to dementia risk.

“Some of the women in our sample are having detailed brain scans and cognitive testing to look for early markers of dementia,” Kuh noted.

“Continued follow-up will enable the researchers to see if the small benefit in thinking skills associated with later menopause translates into a lower risk of dementia in later years,” she said. “However, previous studies have not shown a link between later menopause and lower risk of dementia.”

Keith Fargo, director of scientific programs and outreach for the Alzheimer’s Association, said suggested findings “are not so surprising.”

As for why, he said the study hints that cognitive decline associated with menopause is somehow related to “the length of time a person maintains the hormonal status they have during the reproductive years.”

But Fargo concurred with the researchers that it’s premature to infer that menopause onset is also a factor in dementia risk.

“We cannot draw that conclusion from this study alone,” he stressed, adding that “the link between sex and Alzheimer’s is complex, and likely due to multiple factors. Discovering those factors and translating those discoveries into therapy is critical.”

Style Scenario: Early Spring in the Mountains

What are you going to wear? Sometimes it’s good to look at a few suggestions then add your own tweaks and ideas. That’s what these are for. Now before all the armchair mountain men lose their minds over the inadequacy of this stuff, no one is looking to recreate the Amundsen Expedition here. These are options for getting up/out to a cabin, and relaxing. Just a few functional, flexible pieces suitable for the weather of an early spring weekend getaway, even if the most physical activity you’ll end up doing is half an hour of wood chopping. Unplug. Relax. Hibernate a bit.

Style Scenario: Early Spring in the Mountains | Dappered.com

The Sweater: JCF Striped Sweatshirt Sweater – $ 34.50 ($ 59.50). The feel of a sweatshirt with the styling of a sweater. Comfort is the name of the game.

The Watch: Casio Diver – $ 50ishYep, this one again. Why? Because, it’s a great option for your mountain escape. With its 200m water resistance, and resin band, it’s hardy enough to withstand any rain/snow, or some good ol’ wood chopping.

The Belt: GAP Basic Leather Belt – $ 39.95. Simple, basic and comfortable. You don’t need anything more on this trip.

The Jacket: Goodfellow & Co Men’s Standard Fit Wool 4 Pocket Military Jacket – $ 79.99. Look, if you’re planning on spending a lot of time exploring outside, in the rain or snow, you’re going to want to wear something a little more weather appropriate. But, for the drive up to the cabin, getting into the cabin, and relaxing in the cabin…this will suit you just fine.

The Reading Material: The Passage by Justin Cronin – $ 14.25 (paperback). An updated take on a cataclysmic virus/zombie-esque type story. Part of a trilogy. Exceptionally written; you won’t be able to put it down. Might be a little creepy for being in an isolated cabin…but maybe you like that sort of thing.

The Entertainment: Catch Phrase – $ 15.94 & Playing Cards – $ 5.77 (2 pack). Most likely you won’t have cell phone or internet access (isn’t that kind of the point?), and most likely you’ll be escaping with family or friends, so you’ll want something fun and easy to pass the time.

‘Subnautica’ Game Director Says Early Access Saved the Studio

The world loves Subnautica. Its blend of survival, story, and terrifying underwater close calls has become this year’s early indie success story. Not only is it famous for being fun, it’s become the new example of how to develop a game using the community’s voice as a guiding star.

For developer Unknown Worlds, Subnautica is miles away from its last game, Natural Selection 2 — a hybrid of real-time strategy and first-person shooter that saw marines battling aliens that would evolve mid-battle.

We grabbed the studio co-founder and game director on Subnautica, Charlie Cleveland, to talk about the road to launch and some of the game’s unique design decisions.

FANDOM: We spent a fair bit of time in Natural Selection 2, and this seems like a very different kind of project for Unknown Worlds. Were there any lessons from asymmetrical multiplayer shooters that carried over?

Charlie Cleveland: Heh. After many years making Natural Selection 2, we really needed a change! So we left the competitive RTS/Shooter genre and made a slow, story-based game. It was a great creative challenge that still let us leverage our sci-fi roots.

I would like to say we learned how to scope down after NS2 but I don’t think that’s true. I think we did figure out how to make a game that was much “looser” design-wise, which allowed many people on the team to contribute creatively without “breaking” the game. NS2 was tightly balanced, and with a few bad numbers the whole thing went awry. That was stressful and meant I had to make all design/balance changes, so we wanted to try something different with Subnautica.

The open-world and atmospheric nature of the game really meant we could have a lot of optional content in there that didn’t have to be tightly integrated with everything else.

You’ve had a very collaborative development process with your community. Can you talk about your favourite aspects of that, and what the collaboration resulted in?

We were on the brink of financial disaster, which was averted when our community started supporting us financially in Early Access. Simply put, Subnautica wouldn’t be the game it is, nor the success that it is, without our community.

We started by being inspired by Minecraft and Don’t Starve, but we didn’t know exactly what we were going to focus on. In the beginning it was all about procedural generation of worlds, sub-building and “science,” but we quickly realized some of those things weren’t working well. We also could see where our players were having powerful emotional responses – big creatures, scary creatures, scary environments, the deep, dark blackness below them, etc.

Charlie Cleveland says Subnautica saved Unknown Worlds

That made us drop the vague science elements and focus instead on the more emotional side of the game, which was absolutely invaluable.

Our community also gave us hundreds of thousands of Subnautica feedback tickets (submitted in-game), which helped us figure out what to work on next. We can no longer read reports individually, but we can run queries to see which keywords are “hot” and look for spikes in other terms.

Besides giving us lots of quantitative data (each report is tagged with the exact location in the world so we can find and fix the problems quickly), it also gave us a good temperature of what our players are feeling. One of our team members was traveling through London airport and was inspired by their smiley system, and used that as a basis for our feedback.

We’d love to get your perspective on what effect a “main objective” has on an open world survival game (eg, the great mystery in Subnautica). Does it help or hinder longevity? Does it attract a certain type of objective-oriented gamer that wouldn’t normally dabble in survival gameplay? What other effects does it have?

Our story mode happened quite organically. We could see our fans wanting it and we felt the desire for “more” as well. I think your questions are astute though – it may actually hinder longevity, as there is now an end, and once beaten, players might be likely to believe there’s nothing more to see.

But I’d like to think that players will sometimes ignore the story, preferring to play their own way, or continue playing instead of “finishing” it. I think we layered in the story in a subtle enough way that it’s more like breadcrumbs you can choose to follow, and only if you want to.

‘Subnautica’ Review: Get Crafty, or Sleep With the Fishes

I haven’t seen a lot of survival games incorporate story so it’s certainly possible we appeal to a type of player who wants a dramatic experience and wouldn’t normally be excited about straight up survival. But in this market, I think games need more of a hook than just survival.

Is the mystery element something you plan to keep expanding on?

Yes and no. Subnautica as-is, is done. We made the game we wanted to make and we’re proud of it. We’re not planning on adding new tools, vehicles, etc. But that said, we’ve fallen in love with Planet 4546B and the world of Subnautica, so we’d like to add more to it.

So we’ve started working in earnest on an expansion which we’ll be announcing soon. It’s not a traditional expansion, but a full, standalone story set in the same world. So we fully intend on continuing the mystery.

Underwater levels have kind of been a traditionally hated part of gaming for a long time. Any idea why that is, and did you try to combat that in any way in Subnautica?

We knew this going in, and we had multiple people tell us our game would fail! Underwater is too boring, too blue and movement too slow. We solved the movement problem in our original prototypes and over time and with persistence, I think we solved the other problems as well.

We started the player in the most colorful and easy to navigate area, the Safe Shallows. Then over time, as the player gains faster speed (via fins, the Seaglide, Seamoth, etc), the player can journey to deeper areas that are less densely populated. Movement doesn’t feel too boring when you can move faster, and also when you can hear something terrifying just out of your vision. 😊

Tuning the visibility range and fog falloff was a constant process, and one that we handled differently in each biome.

The depths of the ocean remain remarkably unexplored by us, compared to the reaches of space — as James Cameron noted when he did his deep sea dive. Why do you think the underwater realm is so neglected? Did this offer you any opportunities?

James Cameron has been my lifelong idol and has served as a constant guiding light for my creativity and career. One day I hope to meet him and learn even more from how he lives and thinks! Ahem.

I really don’t know much about why we don’t explore the underwater too much, but I imagine there are a few reasons: it’s dark, scary and dangerous. It also seems to be remarkably sparse as you get deeper, so the payoff may seem to be smaller.

Build a sweet underwater base like in that horrible sci-fi movie ‘SPHERE’

But we’ve talked with some folks (Nekton Project, Ocean.org, OceanGate), that are building real submarines and exploring for real and it’s incredibly exciting. I’d love to learn more about actual underwater exploration and maybe find a way to collaborate.

What if players could help collect data about the actual sea floor? Or if playing the game helped clean up the Pacific Garbage Patch?

I’m told the game will be highly moddable — do you know of any interesting mods being planned?

We put a lot of modding support into Natural Selection 2, but not Subnautica. However, we are using Unity, so this is a known engine which people have figured out how to decompile. So we don’t support mods officially, but there is a lot of knowledge out there on how to hack it.

Notably, we’ve seen the Subnautica Nitrox mod which has somehow figured out a way to add co-op to the game.

A good rule of thumb is that, if it looks like a terrifying Lovecraftian monster that wants to eat you, it probably is.

With such a long and open development process for Subnautica, with presumably more years stretching out in front of us, the concept of a “release” seems different these days. To what extent has the meaning of a “1.0” changed in today’s era of Early Access?

As I mentioned above, we’re focused on developing a new Subnautica game instead of continuing to add features to the current game. We’ve already worked on this game for 5 years and put out hundreds of patches so it’s time for us to move on.

We were unsure what Subnautica v1.0 meant for us, but I think it’s fluid. We are so excited to have had a big enough launch that we’re somewhat confident to devote significant resources to continue the story.

We might be able to eke out some small features to the core game as well, like new game options (increasing danger of creatures, etc). But thanks to all the support we’ve received from the community, the future is bright.

Our thanks to Charlie Cleveland of Unknown Worlds, and we’re looking forward to hearing more about this expansion!

The 411 On FIRE: Financial Independence/Retire Early

financial independence retire early for beginnersI asked the Corporette FB group a while ago what financial resources people were loving, and a reader suggested we do a post on the FIRE movement — financial independence/retire early — so I asked Rebecca Berfanger to round up some great resources on the movement for beginners! Readers, have you considered retiring early as a serious goal? (Has anyone considered and rejected it as a goal?) What steps are you taking to make it happen — and what will you do once you quit? – Kat

Have you ever looked at your financial situation — income, investments, debt, and other factors — and wondered if you could retire comfortably in your 50s, or your 40s, or sooner? We took a look at the Financial Independence/Retire Early movement (FIRE), which emphasizes ways to achieve just what it says: true financial independence that comes from savings and investments that allow you to retire completely. Have you thought about retiring early? Do you have any ambitious retirement plans such as FIRE or other strategies?

Psst: We’ve also talked about cash savings vs. retirement savings and retirement savings in general (as well as having a great discussion about how much women should save for retirement in general).

While FIRE will work differently for everyone, depending on how much your employer matches your retirement plan, how much you can afford to live on, and how much you can contribute to your 401k and other investments without a tax penalty, here’s a guide to Financial Independence/Retire Early for beginners:

What kind of FIRE plan is right for you if you don’t want to cut back your expenses? What if you live in a high cost of living area?

An important part of FIRE is an emphasis on cutting expenses in order to increase your investments, but even within FIRE, there are different mindsets. One is “LeanFIRE,” which is just what it sounds like. You figure out the minimum that you’ll need for retirement — with a focus on living frugally — whether you’ll be in a modest home in a low or moderate cost of living area, or even traveling around in a trailer or RV. (Even then, you could possibly monetize that living situation into a blog or YouTube channel — but then you wouldn’t necessarily be a FIRE purist because you’d still technically be working.)

If that isn’t a good fit for you, there is also “FatFIRE,” where you figure out how much you would need to be financially independent and live a comfortable lifestyle, even if you live in a high cost of living area with high property taxes and other expenses you can’t avoid. For either LeanFIRE or FatFIRE, the general consensus is to save at least 25 times your annual expenses (not income) before you retire.

What are the benefits to FIRE, other than being able to leave your job?

By getting into FIRE and making a budget of your current expenses, you might figure out how you can cut back here and there without totally changing your lifestyle — something you’ve maybe been thinking about doing anyway. If you start investing those savings sooner rather than later, you’ll already be earning instead of letting your money sit in a low-interest checking or savings account. You might also find it’s easier to directly deposit that extra money into your retirement fund or other investments before you even have a chance to spend it.

What are the risks of FIRE?

  • The obvious risk is that no one can predict what the actual cost of living will be in the next 30, 40, possibly 50 years, assuming you are still alive and no longer working or, by then, no longer able to work.
  • One of the most unpredictable expenses is the future cost of health care, which has continued to increase every year. Chances are, you or one of the family members you care for may have an unexpected medical expense that wasn’t included in the regular annual expenses you planned.
  • There are also unknown risks with any financial investment. (See below for where FIRE advocates invest.)

One way to counter these risks is to plan for a FatFIRE. Even if you underestimate your expenses, you’ll still fare better than someone planning for the bare minimum in expenses, something those on LeanFIRE path might do.

How much do you have to earn to make FIRE work?

The goal is to be able to cover your future expenses even if you can’t match your current income. If you don’t make enough in your full-time job to achieve this, the FIRE community encourages starting a side hustle or two. However, this isn’t possible for everyone due to time constraints, and some people already work a second or third job just to keep up with bills. In fact, FIRE is often criticized for only being an option for those who are privileged enough to make more than what they need.

However, if you don’t already have a side hustle and you do have the time, it might be worth considering for reasons other than a goal of early retirement. This Forbes article suggests the benefits of having a side hustle, while Harvard Business Review also provides ideas on how to get started.

Where do members of the FIRE community invest their money?

Two preferred types of investments are low-cost index funds, specifically Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund Admiral Shares (VTSAX), and rental real estate. FIRE enthusiasts don’t have a lot of faith in cryptocurrency, such as Bitcoin, or even in individual stocks. Some FIRE proponents also attempt to achieve FIRE with entrepreneurship, but that’s the riskiest path.

Can you do FIRE if you have or want to have kids?

Like other aspects of FIRE, you must consider all expenses, earnings, and investments. Think about how you can save on childcare expenses and are there things you can plan for your child’s future where you will still have enough financial independence to also afford things for your child — college tuition, extracurricular activities, private education, etc. A 529 Plan might also help in determining expenses as they relate to your children (or future children), and might even have its own tax benefits for families.

How can you get started — what are the best resources for beginners?

Finally, while you should talk to a financial planner or accountant when making major financial decisions, especially when it comes to taxes, don’t be surprised if they encourage more traditional retirement planning or specific investment tools that don’t fall in line with the FIRE philosophy. Also, even if you don’t want to retire early, consider the benefits of following the suggestions of FIRE to help you save for an emergency fund, or to have just enough to be able to quit your job or make a career change in the future.

Let us know: Have you considered FIRE for yourself? When did you start saving for retirement? When you cut back on expenses, do you put the money toward debts such as student loans or a mortgage, or toward a down payment on a house, as opposed to investing for retirement? Do you have any barriers to retiring early? What resources would you suggest for Financial Independence/Retire Early for beginners?

Ever wonder about retiring early? We rounded up the best resources to get started learning about the FIRE movement -- everything you need to know about financial independence retire early -- for beginners!

Depression Is On The Rise in Teens. Here’s How to Help Your Kids Early On

The next time you take your teen for a medical exam, don’t be surprised if the doctor checks more than their height and weight.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recently published new guidelines recommending physicians screen patients ages 10 to 21 for signs of depression.

The Academy suggests patients fill out a depression screening tool for the doctor to review during wellness visits.

The organization also recommends parents share any observations or concerns with the doctor for the most accurate picture of the teen’s mental health and well-being.

If a teen is suspected of being depressed, the group says doctors should help the patient and family create a treatment plan that includes specific goals for school, home and peer settings and also help them access appropriate mental-health professionals.

Teen Depression on the Rise

It’s important to catch depression early to get a jump-start on treatment.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, more than one in 10 teens shows signs of depression.

Some studies suggest teen depression is on the rise, yet many young people who struggle with mental-health issues aren’t getting the help they need.

If your teen doesn’t have a family doctor or you’d rather explore other avenues for teen mental- health screening, here are nine free or cheap options to explore.

African Fashion On Display At Early ‘Black Panther’ Shows

Khalel Robinson, left, poses with his father Jossan Robinson before seeing Black Panther in Silver Spring, Md.

The vibrant African fashion of “Black Panther” was on display at multiplexes around the country Thursday as moviegoers flocked to the first showings of Marvel’s latest superhero blockbuster in traditional African shirts, dresses, head wraps and more.

Some opted to make their own clothes to celebrate the arrival of a superhero many black moviegoers said provided opportunity for them to celebrate their heritage in a way they haven’t been able to before.

“We’re excited because we get representation in a film that’s not about slavery, that’s not about trials and tribulations, but about a powerful African empire, which is where we come from in the first place,” said tattoo artist Elisheba Mrozik, who attended one of the first showings of the film in Nashville.

Joyce Robinson poses for a portrait before seeing Black Panther in Silver Spring, Md.

She wore a flowing shoulderless black gown that was broken up by patterns of purple and yellow designs that she said was made in Nigeria and that she bought for the film’s release and Black History Month.

“Somebody that looks like me is a superhero and nobody is whitewashing it. And it’s beautiful,” she said.

In the nearly 10 years since Marvel’s “Iron Man” sparked sprawling film superhero universes, there have been plenty of chances for fans to wear clothes that pay homage to favorites such as Spider-Man, Batman, the Hulk and more.

But “Black Panther” has sparked something different — an opportunity for black moviegoers to watch a superhero who not only looks like them, but also introduces a different view of Africa than has traditionally been seen at theaters. Set in the fictional nation of Wakanda, a technologically advanced oasis that has never been colonized, the film has been praised for its vision of Afrofuturism, strong and smart female characters and a story that shatters stereotypes about the continent and its people.

The Lawton family poses for a portrait before seeing Black Panther in Silver Spring, Md.

At a showing in New York’s Times Square, Miquain Gainey wore a Basotho blanket used by the Bantu tribe in South Africa. “It’s featured very prominently in the film, and it’s cultural heritage,” he said. Gainey said he wanted something fashionable that fit the film, but he also wanted to stay warm.

Kiara Citron, who is a huge Marvel Comics fan and had a Deadpool-themed wedding, was at the same theater and wore a bright blue satin gown she spent a week sewing, using some leftover fabric for a matching head wrap.

“I just made something for the occasion because I’ve never had an opportunity for this before,” she said. “I’ve never gone to a theater to see a film like this before, so I just really needed to go all out.”

In Nashville, Latarsher White and her family wore custom-made African gowns and suits to a Nashville theater because it made them feel connected to their heritage.

“It’s just an opportunity to explore those regal roots and to know that some of us do come from royalty,” she said. “It’s bigger than what we see every day and what’s represented. It’s just connecting to your heritage and that royal lineage to a degree. And so it’s always good to play dress- up.”

Allyson Little and Melissa Williams-Valrie, dressed in Wakanda-inspired attire, pose for a portrait before seeing Black Panther in Silver Spring, Md.

Kermit El-Amin, 25, wore his African tribal prints to work before watching the film in Nashville.

“I wanted to make sure that people knew that I really felt comfortable,” El-Amin said. “Feel comfortable in the skin that I am in and feel comfortable doing things like this.”

Ronald Simmons, founder of the website YouDontReadComics.com, sported a Black Panther T-shirt to a Times Square show Thursday night. He said he expected “Black Panther” to be life-changing for many fans, especially children.

“If I was a kid, and I saw ‘Black Panther’ that would have been great,” he said. “I grew up in a lot of heroes and none of them look like me at all. And I still love those heroes, but I can imagine being a kid and seeing, you know, a character that looked like me, I would be pretty hyped.”

9 of the Best Soccer Easter Eggs and References in ‘Early Man’ Explained

It may have escaped your notice, but the latest stop-motion Claymation film from the Oscar-winning Aardman studios is a sports movie in disguise. Presented as a prehistoric animated comedy in the same vein as other Aardman films including Chicken Run and The Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists, Early Man quickly morphs into a film about a team of misfit underdogs taking on the big-hitters. The movie climaxes with a soccer match upon which everything’s at stake. It’s not a coincidence that the film is released ahead of the 2018 World Cup.

But if you’re coming to the film without an in-depth knowledge of footy – and in particular, the British game – you might find that some of the references soar over your head. And given that director Nick Park and the Aardman team have gone to great effort to embed them in there, you’re going to want to understand them. That’s where this guide comes in. Here’s an explainer of all the best soccer Easter eggs and references we found – with Nick Park himself contributing his insight exclusively for FANDOM in the video above.

Goona

Early Man Goona
Goona’s name references the fans of a London soccer team.

Game of Thrones actress Maisie Williams voices a character called Goona. She’s a Bronze-Age girl who meets Stone-Ager Dug and befriends him. A talented footballer, she finds herself at the mercy of sexist attitudes that prevent her from playing for the Bronze Age team, which is populated by European-accented prima donnas. She finds her place as player-coach of the Stone Age team – aka the Stone Age Brutes – and helps them in their pursuit of victory. The Easter egg here is in Goona’s name – ‘gooner’ — is a slang term for a fan of London-based Premier League club, Arsenal.

‘Early Man’ United

Nick Park explains that he pitched the film as exactly this. Which clearly did the trick, as it got its funding and is about to hit screens. It’s an amalgamation of the name of the film and Manchester United – or Man United as it’s frequently shortened to – a football club based in the north of England that has seen a lot of success over the years. They’re one of the most famous teams in the world.

The Robot

During the football match, you’ll see Hognob, Dug’s wild boar companion, pulling out some moves on the sidelines. He’s mimicking a famous goal celebration by an exceptionally tall football player named Peter Crouch, who famously made ‘The Robot’ his own. He first pulled out the move during a pre-2006 World Cup friendly match, and reprised it when he scored his 100th Premier League goal.

Queen Oofeefa

The Queen’s name is a reference to association football’s governing body FIFA. The letters stand for ‘Fédération Internationale de Football Association’. It’s French: the organisation’s headquarters are based in Zurich, Switzerland. As Nick Park explains, they couldn’t use the name ‘FIFA’ for legal reasons, hence the reason it’s spelled differently.

The Iconic Vuvuzela

If you watch closely as the film reaches its grand finale, you’ll seen Queen Oofeefa reach for a long, narrow horn to pipe out a sound. This is the humble vuvuzela – a controversial musical instrument of sorts that became a mainstay in the stands during the 2010 World Cup, held in South Africa. Used by fans to rally their team, it emits a loud, buzzing sound when you blow into it. Fans, players and broadcasters cultivated a love-hate relationship with this unassuming plastic horn.

Commentary Team

World Cup
Alan Hansen sits bottom row, left; John Motson stands top row, right in 1998.

As with many sports comedies, there’s a commentary duo to crack jokes and help jolly the proceedings along. In Early Man, the twosome is made up of a couple of characters British football fans will find familiar – although the actual voices are provided by comedy actor and impressionist Rob Brydon. He’s mimicking former Scottish international-turned-pundit Alan Hansen, and legendary commentator John Motson.

Football Chants

As you watch, you’ll hear the crowd chanting ditties while the game is played. These are actual fan chants that have grown from humble origins on the terraces at football grounds to become extremely widespread and well-known. In Early Man, the words have been tweaked to make them funny and relevant to the time-period and storyline. For instance, “You’re going down the mine” is a jibe by the Bronze Age fans to the Stone Age team that they’re going to lose, and consequently end up working down the mine.

Classic Commentary

If you’re watching, and you get to the end, and you really don’t get this line: “The giant duck is on the pitch! He thinks it’s all over! It is now!” allow us to explain. It’s a reference to a classic line of commentary that’s dear to every English football fan’s heart. The original line goes: “Some people are on the pitch! They think it’s all over! It is now!” It was spoken by BBC broadcaster Kenneth Wolstenholme, just as Geoff Hurst thumped the ball into the back of the net in the dying moments of the game. He was commentating on the 1966 World Cup Final in which England historically beat West Germany 4-2. It’s the only time England have ever won a World Cup Final.

Early Man hits screens in the UK on January 26 and in the US on February 16.

Why to book a flight for early morning

Booking the right kind of flight is essential for getting your vacation off to a good start. You don’t want to have to deal with stress, panic, and all the other issues that generally come with taking a flight. That’s why you’ve got to be sure you do what you can to choose the best flight to suit your circumstances. Being stuck in an airport, or having a canceled flight can make the holidays a really miserable time of year.

So, the thing to do is to come up with excellent ways of ensuring the flying experience goes off as well as possible. And, one of the oldest tricks in the book is to make sure you book and catch a flight for the early morning. Sure, you’ll have to get up earlier, but the advantages to doing this far outweigh the disadvantages and will help make your vacation experience much better. These are some of the awesome benefits of booking an early morning flight.

Less chance of cancellation

The major positive for booking an early morning flight these days is that there is a much smaller chance of cancellation. In fact, studies have shown us that early morning flights are also less likely to experience delays than afternoon and evening flights. The best time to fly is before 8am, whereas the risk of delays only grows every hour before reaching its peak at around 6pm. This is widely regarded to be a result of uncrowded airspace, and less of a backlog of planes waiting to take off.

More time at your destination

One of the things we love the most about catching an early flight is that it leaves more time at your destination venue. Think about it, when you get to your location on an evening flight, you only get the first night and the rest of the trip. And that first night you could well be jet-lagged, worn out, and not feeling very sociable. It’s often a write-off. However, if you arrive there in the late morning or early afternoon you will get at least half a day extra, and this can make all the difference when it comes to the length and enjoyment of your stay.

It will be a smoother flight

It should come as no surprise that early morning flights are significantly smoother and more appealing than those later in the day as well. There is less turbulence in the sky earlier in the morning, and the chance of thunderstorms is much less. You also have to factor in that there are going to be fewer people in the airport, which means it will be less busy, and you’re not going to have to deal with the chaos of having too many people. If you can’t stand crowds, this is definitely the best time of the day to fly – and, as if that wasn’t enough, you also have the benefit of paying less for flights because they are earlier.

Booking a flight for the right time is imperative for helping you get the most out of your vacation. There are so many things that can go wrong when you are going to fly to your chosen destination, but, by booking a flight as early as possible, you will be able to avoid this. There are so many plus points to early travel, and you have to ensure you are catching the earliest flight you can.

US Flu Season Off To An Early Start; Widespread In 7 States

NEW YORK (AP) — This year’s flu season is off to a quick start and so far it seems to be dominated by a nasty bug.

Health officials say the flu vaccine seems well matched to the viruses making people sick, but it’s too early to tell how bad this season will be. The main flu bug this season tends to cause more deaths and hospitalizations and vaccines tend not to work as well against this type.

Flu began picking up last month. By the end of last week, seven states reported widespread flu activity: Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Virginia.

Most flu seasons don’t really get going until around Christmas. That’s how last year’s flu season played out.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported the latest data Friday.

Experts say that putting up holiday decorations early could make you happier

Experts say that putting up holiday decorations early could make you happier

Experts say that putting up holiday decorations early could make you happier

It’s time to stop looking at your neighbors like they’re crazy when their Christmas lights go up a whole month early. Why? Because according to experts, putting up holiday decorations early could make you happier. Who knew decorations could change the psychological game?

There’s an unwritten rule that you shouldn’t decorate for Christmas until after Thanksgiving. But now that we know putting up holiday decorations could increase happiness, we’re putting up our Christmas trees and hanging our lights ASAP. How about a little fake snow for the windows too? Done. We should probably start listening to Christmas music too. Given the constant barrage of bad news lately, we think we could all use a little bit more cheer in our lives. Holiday decorations to the rescue.

So, how exactly does putting up holiday decorations early make us happier? The explanation actually makes a lot of sense.

“In a world full of stress and anxiety people like to associate to things that make them happy and Christmas decorations evoke those strong feelings of the childhood,” psychoanalyst Steve McKeown told Unlaid. “Decorations are simply an anchor or pathway to those old childhood magical emotions of excitement. So putting up those Christmas decorations early extend the excitement!”

Putting up holiday decorations is a pathway to being more in-tune with your inner childlike spirit.

It also helps you make more friends. A little extra tinsel shows your neighbors that you’re easily approachable and makes you seem friendlier. So, if you’re trying to get the bae down the hall’s attention, maybe decorate your apartment door with some cute mistletoe — to spark conversation, of course.

Psychotherapist Amy Morin also told Unilad that the holidays trigger nostalgia, which evokes more positivity into one’s life.

“Nostalgia helps link people to their personal past and it helps people understand their identity. For many putting up Christmas decorations early is a way for them to reconnect with their childhoods. It may be a bittersweet feeling. Perhaps the holidays serve as a reminder of when a loved one was still alive. Or maybe looking at a Christmas tree reminds someone of what life was like when they still believed in Santa. For people who have lost a loved one, the holidays may serve as a reminder of happy times they had with that person in the past. Decorating early may help them feel more connected with that individual.”

So if the same goes for your house, what about those ugly Christmas sweaters hiding in your closet? We say pull them out extra early this year!

See Early Photos of Bruce Springsteen From the Photographer Who Captures His ‘True Grit’

The new book Bruce Springsteen: Further Up the Road traces nearly four decades of the beloved musician‘s career, as seen by the self-taught photographer Frank Stefanko. Stefanko’s photographs include the cover images for the Springsteen albums Darkness on the Edge of Town and The River, but many of the images in the book have never before been published.

In Springsteen’s memoir Born to Run, he described working with Stefanko:

I’d gotten to know Patti Smith a little through our work together on “Because the Night.” When I visited her during one of her performances at The Bottom Line, she gave me the name of a South Jersey photographer and said, “You should let this guy take your picture.”

One winter afternoon I drove south to Haddonfield, New Jersey, and met Frank Stefanko. Frank had photographed Patti at the beginning of her career. He worked a day job at a local meatpacking plant and continued to practice his craft in his spare time.

Frank Stefanko and Bruce Springsteen, Colts Neck, NJ, 2017.
Frank StefankoFrank Stefanko and Bruce Springsteen, Colts Neck, NJ, 2017.

Frank was a rough-edged but easygoing kind of guy. My recollection is he borrowed a camera for the day, called a teenage kid from next door to come over and hold up his one light and started shooting. I stood against some flowery wallpaper in Frank and his wife’s bedroom, looked straight into the camera, gave him my best “troubled young man,” and he did the rest. One of those photos ended up on the cover of Darkness on the Edge of Town.

Frank’s photographs were stark. His talent was he managed to strip away your celebrity, your artifice, and get to the raw you. His photos had a purity and a street poetry to them. They were lovely and true, but they weren’t slick. Frank looked for your true grit and he naturally intuited the conflicts I was coming to terms with. His pictures captured the people I was writing about in my songs and showed me the part of me that was still one of them. We had other cover options but they didn’t have the hungriness of Frank’s pictures.

Criticisms I’ve Faced Because I’m Engaged In My Early Twenties

2015-06-04-1433390335-4565964-10172637_10204096321715178_280355988881912589_n2.jpg

I think a lot of people have misconceptions about women who get engaged in their early twenties, but it’s the best decision I’ve ever made. People have told me that if I get married this young that I won’t be able to enjoy all that life has to offer, but to me it seems that my fiancé helps me enjoy life even more than I did before we started dating.

I’ve heard that women who marry young are somehow incapable of making good decisions or, at least, are not able to make decisions logically. But I tell people love isn’t blind. Jacob and I think very carefully and critically before making important decisions, and getting engaged was no exception.

Some articles I’ve seen about the topic of young engagements focus on the benefits of being able to have children young while you still have plenty of energy to raise them. However, I can’t relate to this particular advantage. I don’t want to have children (in the traditional sense): I want to adopt, but not for at least another fifteen years. I factored in children to make sure Jacob and I are on the same page, but I am not getting married to have them.

Why fifteen years before children? Jacob and I will spend approximately the first ten years of our marriage continuing to pursue higher education. He will go on to earn a Master’s Degree in Computer Science or Statistics while I earn a law degree and a Master’s Degree in Latin American & Caribbean Studies. Then both of us hope to start PhD programs. In ten years we will no longer be Mr. & Mrs. but rather Dr. & Dr. Once we build our careers, then we will focus on building a family.

Several women are under the notion that I will suddenly end my higher education goals the day I get married. Trust me, I am a human, not a robot, so getting married will not change me into a baby- making machine who leaves school in the dust. Female hormones are not that powerful people. (And who says women cannot have babies and get their degrees too?) (Or that hormones can make a woman change her mind?) When I am married, even though Jacob and I will be legally, emotionally and financially tied, I will still be my own person with my own unique goals and ambitions. Even better, since Jacob also wants his PhD, we look forward to sharing that experience together.

Another reason that people don’t like couples getting married young is because they think it won’t last. We both have great examples of lasting relationships with our grandparents and parents. If we were not certain about our potential to have a legacy of love then we would not enter into holy matrimony.

People also don’t understand why we would settle down and forgo multiple sexual partners in the future. Once again, we aren’t worried about it. We prefer a committed, monogamous environment even though we are both open people. Because we are so comfortable with each other we never have to leave our safe environment to have fun. It’s just one of the many benefits of unconditional love.

Jacob and I have talked a lot about all of the negative comments we have received when we tell people about our engagement. I was inspired to write this article because most of the negative comments come from strangers and non- immediate family who can’t understand why we would get married so young. Most critics are actually women who don’t mind Jacob getting married young but who mind me getting married young. It’s a huge double standard. It is important for us women to lift each other up even if one of us makes a different choice. This is why I love Amy Poehler’s saying, “Good for her, not for me.” I actually thought a lot about whether or not to even write this article because I don’t like feeling as though I need to explain myself for people to accept and share in my happiness. However, writing is cathartic and once I complied all my thoughts into one place it felt like a huge weight off my shoulders.

Ultimately, I am very proud of all of my life choices so I love spreading happiness around, the engagement included. If I need to explain my experiences so people can empathize with a different point of view, I’m all for it! I hope that by sharing this piece of our lives with you all that it clears up any preconceived notions. We hope you will share joy with us on the happy occasion of our engagement!

Lifetime’s ‘Grumpy Cat’ Trailer Means Christmas Is Coming Early

Whatever you’re doing, put it on paws.

Lifetime released the first trailer for the new movie, “Grumpy Cat’s Worst Christmas Ever,” and it’s basically the best present anyone could ask for.

The trailer, which features Internet star Grumpy Cat bringing her cantankerous personality to life, seems pretty standard overall. There’s “Parks and Recreation” star Aubrey Plaza providing some pessimistic zingers as the voice of Grumpy, there are plenty of shots capturing the cat’s signature frowny face and, of course, there’s a giant explosion and a scene of the Grumpy shooting people with a paintball gun.

You know … pretty standard.

Grumpy Cat’s Worst Christmas Ever” premieres Saturday, Nov. 29, at 8:00 p.m. ET on Lifetime.

The Spoken Word: Recollections of Dryden History, The Early Years (NASA SP-2003-4530) – Scott Crossfield Interview, Muroc, NACA Research, X-1 Project

The Spoken Word: Recollections of Dryden History, The Early Years (NASA SP-2003-4530) – Scott Crossfield Interview, Muroc, NACA Research, X-1 Project

Since the founding of the Dryden Flight Research Center History Office in 1996, its staff has conducted nearly a hundred interviews with retired and serving employees. Their recollections represent a unique resource in understanding the development of aerospace technology in the second half of the 20th century. Their personal experiences, insights, and opinions allow the reader to gain an understanding into what it was actually like to have been involved with some of the milestone events in aerospace history. These interviews have been edited and assembled into this monograph, so that a wider audience can also share in their experiences. This study covers the early years of what eventually became the Dryden Flight Research Center. It spans the period between the arrival of Walter Williams and the first group of NACA engineers at Muroc in 1946, and ends with the establishment of NASA in 1958. This timeframe encompasses the breaking of the sound barrier, the pivotal inertial coupling research, the first use of computer simulations, the transformation of the NACA facility from a pair of old hangars into a state-of-the-art research center, and the dawn of the space age. These events took place against the background of the end of World War II, the start of the Cold War, and the twin technological revolutions of jet propulsion and supersonic flight. They are told by the people who participated in these events, in their own words. The foundations of the Dryden Flight Research Center date back more than a half century, to a time when aviation faced revolutionary technical changes. When the first NACA contingent arrived in September 1946, they found the Muroc Army Air Field to be an isolated and barren outpost. The post-war demobilization had left the hastily constructed base facilities in a poor state of repair. Palmdale and Lancaster in the late 1940s were rough desert towns lacking many of the conveniences to which the new arrivals from Langley (and their spouses) had been
