Why Do Americans Call It Soccer Instead of Football? Blame England

In the World Cup, the U.S. and England aren’t traditionally rivals. But, off the field, a different type of rivalry has reigned for more than a century: what to call the world’s most popular sport.

To Americans, it’s soccer. To most of the rest of the world, (including England, the birthplace of the modern sport,) it’s football. But what most people don’t know is that the word “soccer” is not in fact an American invention. On the contrary, it was an import from England, and one that was commonly used there until relatively recently.

At least, that’s the argument made by Stefan Szymanski, a professor of sports economics at the University of Michigan. In a paper from 2014, Szymanski writes that “soccer” originated in late 19th century England, as a way of differentiating between variants of the game which at that time did not have a commonly agreed-upon set of rules.

In the early 1800s in England, football and rugby existed as different variations of the same game. But in 1863, the Football Association was formed to codify the rules of football so that aristocratic boys from different schools could play against one another. In 1871, the Rugby Football Union followed suit. The two sports officially became known as Rugby Football and Association Football. (Those new rules were slow to spread to America, where another version of the game was evolving — one that the rest of the world now knows as “American football,” and is played in the NFL.)

In England, Szymanski writes, aristocratic boys came up with the shortened terms “rugger” and “soccer” to differentiate between Rugby Football and Association Football. To support this argument, he cites a letter to The New York Times, published in 1905: “It was a fad at Oxford and Cambridge to use “er” at the end of many words, such as foot-er, sport-er, and as Association did not take an “er” easily, it was, and is, sometimes spoken of as Soccer.”

And the term, Szymanski says, was widely recognized in England through the first half of the twentieth century, according to data he crunched from books and newspapers. It became even more prevalent after the World War II — driven, he suggests, by the number of American soldiers in the country and the infatuation with American culture that came after the war.

But by the 1980s, Brits started to turn against the word. “The penetration of the game into American culture,” Szymanski writes, “has led to backlash against the use of the word in Britain, where it was once considered an innocuous alternative to the word ‘football.’”

With England now into the semi-finals of the World Cup for the first time since 1990, fans are celebrating their nation’s success in the sport born in their country but long mastered by foreigners. On Twitter, that pride is manifesting itself, partially, in the age-old (since the 1980s at least) tradition of bashing the word soccer.

“It’s football not soccer,” one person tweeted, on the night of England’s successful victory over Sweden which propelled the team to the semi-finals. “The English created the game = football.”

The World Cup draws to a close this weekend, but the argument over the name of the sport it celebrates certainly won’t.

England Lost in the World Cup and the ‘They’re Going Home’ Memes Are Here

Following England’s devastating loss to Croatia in the World Cup semi-final, Twitter was rife with jokes poking fun at the “It’s coming home” rallying cry of the English fan base.

With a little over 10 minutes to go in extra time of Wednesday’s match, Croatia’s Mario Mandzukic fired a shot into the back of the net to give his team a 2-1 lead over England. The English squad was unable to come up with an equalizer in the remaining time, officially ending their chances of reaching their first World Cup final since 1966.

But as if the loss itself wasn’t crushing enough, it was then that the “They’re going home” memes began to appear. Those rooting against England were all too quick to turn their fans’ cheer of “It’s coming home”—which has risen in popularity throughout the 2018 World Cup—into a taunt.

See some of the “They’re going home” memes below.

England Training for the World Cup Semi-Final With a Rubber Chicken Is Every Fan’s Dream

With just one day to go until England battles Croatia for a spot in the 2018 World Cup final, the English team is trying out an interesting new training method.

Ahead of Tuesday’s semi-final match between France and Belgium, the English squad—including Golden boot frontrunner Harry Kane—was spotted tossing around a rubber chicken in preparation for their big Wednesday game.

Fans, of course, were delighted to see the players getting along so well.

“Actually love the atmosphere of this England team. Throwing around a rubber chicken as a training drill,” one England enthusiast wrote. “Even if it isn’t coming home, which it is, they’ve been an absolute delight to follow this campaign.”

“Love how chilled the England squad is, playing with rubber chickens in training day before their biggest game in 28 years hahahaha class,” added another.

Fabulous locations in New England

New England is one of the most picturesque and breathtaking areas of the United States. Known for its colonial past, New England is rare in that it is recognized as a region comprised of several states, as opposed to a state itself. The states that make up New England are Maine, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts. New England is perhaps best-known as home to the NFL franchise New England Patriots.

But, that’s not all that New England has to offer; it actually boasts some really amazing areas and fabulous locations. You need to get out to the Northeast and have a look for yourself, so you can experience this idyllic and beautiful area of the United States. On the off chance that you know nothing about New England already, we’ve decided to compile this list of some of the most fabulous locations in the area.

Mystic, Connecticut

Any place with the name Mystic is definitely one that’s going to raise some interest. So, it’s no surprise that the village of Mystic, Connecticut is one of the most fabulous locations in New England. This picturesque village is located on Mystic River and has a seafaring history. You can find out all about the nautical history of the place by paying a visit to Mystic Seaport, the largest maritime museum in the United States.

Portsmouth, New Hampshire

Portsmouth is the third-oldest city in the United States, having been founded in 1623. The historic city is one of the best-looking ocean cities in New England, the maritime history is one that plays a big role in the fabric of the city. There is plenty of Georgian architecture to enjoy here, as well as a beautiful, brilliant harbor, offering excellent views. The famous tugboats here are also a must-see when visiting Portsmouth.

Newport, Rhode Island

What we love about Newport is how much this stunning coastal town actually boasts to visitors. There is some sensational architecture on display here, as well as a vibrant and great looking waterfront area. You can’t visit Newport without taking a tour of the incredible Gilded Age mansions, based on European palaces. This is also the perfect city for wine tours, being that it has three amazing vineyards.

Brattleboro, Vermont

The wonderfully named Brattleboro perfectly captures the essence of New England’s rural beauty. It is the only town in the entire world named Brattleboro, and this uniqueness is a hallmark of the town. It’s a place that looks as vibrant and beautiful in the winter as it does in the summer. And there is plenty to do here, including hiking, skiing, and skating. The town also has an excellent art scene and some pretty unforgettable scenery. We love everything about this New England gem.

Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts

You’ve probably heard of Martha’ Vineyard before, as it’s one of the most famous places in Massachusetts, and in New England. Just below Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard is the ultimate destination for a summer vacation. It’s popular with the wealthy, and the stunning scenery is just one of the magical elements of this beautiful island. Martha’s Vineyard is actually only accessible via air or sea, and this gives it a unique and off-the-beaten-track kind of vibe.

New England is such a beautiful region of the States, with such incredible locations within it. If you are looking for somewhere for your next location, you might be considering a vacation abroad. But, there is so much natural beauty already here, and these are just a few of the best locations to visit in New England.

A river-swimmer’s paradise in the heart of England

It may be plain old open-water swimming rather than a wild adventure but the tranquil rivers near Oundle and Olney, in the south Midlands, have plenty of pulling power

Preconceptions about places we’ve never been are formed in a multitude of ways: what we read, watch or hear about it, and sometimes even the people who are from there – whether we like them or not. Occasionally, there are areas we have no idea about. For me, that was a section in the heart of England: the south Midlands. Then I went to swim there.

“What’s this area called?” I had asked Bryn Dymott, my swimming guide for the day. Bryn had met me off the train in St Neots, Cambridgeshire, and had rapidly transported us into … well, just where had he taken us?

In the bright sunshine of late spring, I could see the hillforts stretching away along the escarpment – Barbury, then Liddington, and finally Uffington, with its famous chalk white horse. They may have been begun in the bronze age, but reached their apogee in the iron age, in the first millennium BC.

Shaping the Day: A History of Timekeeping in England and Wales 1300-1800

Shaping the Day: A History of Timekeeping in England and Wales 1300-1800

Timekeeping is an essential activity in the modern world, and we take it for granted that our lives our shaped by the hours of the day. Yet what seems so ordinary today is actually the extraordinary outcome of centuries of technical innovation and circulation of ideas about time.

Shaping the Day is a pathbreaking study of the practice of timekeeping in England and Wales between 1300 and 1800. Drawing on many unique historical sources, ranging from personal diaries to housekeeping manuals, Paul Glennie and Nigel Thrift illustrate how a particular kind of common sense about
time came into being, and how it developed during this period.

Many remarkable figures make their appearance, ranging from the well-known, such as Edmund Halley, Samuel Pepys, and John Harrison, who solved the problem of longitude, to less familiar characters, including sailors, gamblers, and burglars.

Overturning many common perceptions of the past-for example, that clock time and the industrial revolution were intimately related-this unique historical study will engage all readers interested in how ''telling the time'' has come to dominate our way of life.

In Stunning Twist, England Leaves United Kingdom Instead of Scotland!

In what is sure to take up at least a whole chapter in the history books, Prime Minister David Cameron delivered the stunning news that England is leaving the United Kingdom in order to pacify Scotland and that the latter will continue to stay in the union. Queen Elizabeth II will be going with England while Cameron will remain with the UK.

It is rumored that the British were forced to make this sudden decision when the Scots threatened to invade England wearing nothing but kilts — and more disturbingly — no underwear.

In a statement clearly intended to diffuse the growing tension between the two neighbors, Buckingham Palace said, “It is with a heavy heart that we do this but as we say in the stuffiest British tradition: needs must. We did everything we could to persuade the Scottish people to stay within the union but it became increasingly apparent that they just don’t care anymore. As a result, England was forced to make a sacrifice for the sake of everyone. Typical, isn’t it? Anyway, as the James Bond song goes: Nobody Does it Better, and so even though we are leaving, you can be sure we will look bloody good doing it!”

After its separation from the UK, England will no longer be part of the European Union nor will it continue using the pound, which itself will henceforth be called “the currency formerly known as the pound” since the Scots never liked the name. The new seat of government for the UK will be based in Scotland and its iconic flag, the Union Jack, will be replaced by the image of Sean Connery instead.

In celebration of the newfound influence of the land of its birth, Johnnie Walker will provide free scotch to everyone on the planet — except the English, of course — for six hours or until everyone is well and properly sloshed.

Speaking from a castle in the Scottish highlands, which will replace No. 10 Downing Street as David Cameron’s office, the prime minister said that he wishes England nothing but the best for the future but they should really go bugger themselves now that Scotland has emerged as the victor in this game of political brinksmanship. “We never really liked the English in the UK anyway,” he added with a wink.

The only blemish to the jubilation of the Scots has been NATO’s reaction to the news. The leading commander for NATO forces in Western Europe has indicated that the organization may have to kick the UK out because of the Scots. When pushed to clarify the reason for this unusual position, the commander answered, “It’s that damn bagpipe music the Scots are always playing! We have enough problems dealing with Russia without having to be assaulted by that cacophony. The English are annoyingly polite and boring to the point of physical pain but at least they are f—ing quiet.”

Still, according to a poll conducted in Scotland, most people feel that after the Ukrainian fiasco, NATO doesn’t have much credibility left anyway, so why worry about being expelled from the organization? It might actually save the UK some embarrassment if they weren’t part of NATO.

And the best part, according to the Scots, of England leaving the UK? The UK’s most famous alumnus and the reason that anybody even knows the British Secret Service — Sir Sean Connery, who can’t stand the English, has promised that he will return to the big screen as super-spy James Bond as soon as the English depart the scene. According to his agent, the legendary thespian looks forward to many new daring adventures, and to reconnecting with his old flame Pussy Galore.

The Politics of Provisions: Food Riots, Moral Economy, and Market Transition in England, c. 1550-1850

The ‘politics of provisions’ – forceful negotiations over sustenance – has created surprising contests in world history, particularly in times of market transition. In England a ‘politics of provisions’ evolved in a dialogue between popular riots and paternalist subsistence policies from Tudor dearths to the Victorian embrace of free-market doctrines. Hence provision politics was a core ingredient of both state-formation and of the emergence of the first market economy and society in England. This book is the first full-scale critical revision of E.P. Thompson’s seminal model of the ‘moral economy of the crowd’, which has had huge influence across the social sciences. It is the first synthesis of the many dispersed studies of three centuries of marketing and negotiations by riot over subsistence. By explaining such long-term shifts in patterns of political negotiation from parish-pump to Privy Council, this study offers a new view of why food riots were a more compelling and lasting bone of contention than enclosures, wages or votes.

Shaping the Day: A History of Timekeeping in England and Wales 1300-1800

Shaping the Day: A History of Timekeeping in England and Wales 1300-1800

Timekeeping is an essential activity in the modern world and we take it for granted that our lives our shaped by the hours of the day.

Overturning many common perceptions of the past-for example, that clock time and the industrial revolution were intimately related-this unique historical study engages all readers interested in how ''telling the time'' has come to dominate our way of life.
