Celebrates Successful Benefit Party and Beach Fest 14th Annual Event Raised Over $250,000 for Local Youth Organizations

PRESS RELEASE

July 5th, 2018 – San Diego, CA – On Saturday, June 30th, Grammy-winning rock band SWITCHFOOT celebrated the 14th annual SWITCHFOOT BRO-AM at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas, CA. The annual community celebration and charity event gathered over 15,000people for the free Beach Fest and Surf Contest, which raised over $ 250,000 to benefit local youth initiatives through VH1 Save the Music Foundation, Feeding San Diego, Challenged Athletes Foundation, A Step Beyond, StandUp for Kids, and Rob Machado Foundation. Since the inaugural BRO-AM in 2005, the event has raised over 1.8 million dollars for San Diego youth programs impacting homeless, at-risk and disadvantaged kids.

The beachfront concert included performances from SWITCHFOOT, Colony House, Sure Sure, 91X Battle for the BRO-AMwinner Inspired And The Sleep, and a very special appearance by local youth musicians from VH1 Save The Music Foundationwho performed on stage with SWITCHFOOT.

In addition to charitable giving and musical performances, the diverse and exciting event included a variety of surf contests. Team Surfin Fire, which included professional surfer Damien Hobgood, took the win for the BRO-AM Team Surf Contest, where a four person team competes riding one wave regular and one wave switch (keeping it more “bro” than pro). Other competitors included three time world champion Tom Curren, world renowned local surf legend Rob Machado and other professional surfers such as Josh Kerr, Timmy Curran, Yadin Nicol, Brett Simpson along with numerous up and coming young surf stars.  The CAF Elite Surf Team took third place showcasing that their physical challenges don’t hold them back from competing with the best. The winner of the Rob Machado Bro Junior Surf Contest, a contest that judges kids on who has the most fun, was Toby Dussalt.  One of the most inspirational moments of the day is the Challenged Athletes Foundation Kids’ Adaptive Surf Series where kids with physical challenges are given the opportunity to compete with surfers from the team contest supporting them in the water and thousands of spectators cheering them on.  First place went to  Landis Sims. BRO-AM’s surf events wrapped with the hilarious Surf Joust Expression Session, complete with battle armor and nerf weapons on soft surfboards, with Kieran Anderson taking home the top prize.

Over 200 volunteers supported the event with many of them participating in waste diversion efforts to educate attendees on proper sorting of compost, recycle and landfill in partnership with the City of Encinitas and the Solana Center (a local environmental innovation organization).  BRO-AM uses solar energy to power their stage and sound avoiding approximately 1400 lbs of CO2.  And partnering with the Rob Machado Foundation, free refills of cold filtered water were provided to all attendees to host an event free of single-use plastic water bottles.

The BRO-AM kicked off with the BRO-AM Benefit Party hosted by Viasat on Thursday, June 28th, gathering philanthropists and friends for an evening of local food and drinks, silent/live auctions and live performances.

“The BRO-AM is bigger than a rock band trying to do some good.  It’s a community of givers and doers who know that collaboration produces exponential impact.  It’s the idea that giving can be fun and meaningful.  It’s incredible to see our dream become bigger than we could’ve imagined.  Surfing, music, raising funds for the next generation.” – Jon Foreman

In 2005, after traveling the world, SWITCHFOOT dreamed up an idea to give back to their hometown that supported them as both surfers and musicians, to rally their great community and to invest in kids who might need a hand up. Fourteen years later, the BRO-AM has grown in impact and size gathering over 17,000 people to the beach for   surf contests, free beach concert and numerous vendor booths. The SWITCHFOOT BRO-AM Foundation grants focus on initiatives that create a thriving future – Physical and community well being along with opportunity and empowerment through music, art, surfing and education.

Beyond their career achievements and creation of BRO-AM, SWITCHFOOT has also maintained a deep commitment to a variety of humanitarian causes, lending their support to such worthy organizations as Food for the Hungry, CURE International, DATA, the ONE Campaign, Habitat for Humanity, and To Write Love on Her Arms.

HONOLULU — Cancer patients, families, survivors and medical staff gathered at Kaiser Permanente Moanalua Medical Center today for Oncology on Canvas, an annual event funded by the Oncology Nursing Society Hawaii Chapter. Participants of all ages had the opportunity to draw, paint and write about their journeys, from diagnosis to treatment and healing. Attendees also connected with a network of other oncology patients, families and staff to discuss shared experiences and inspire others going through similar journeys.

“Bringing together patients, former patients and families helps build a support system and community for our members whose lives have been touched by cancer,” said Donna Gabriel, manager of cardiology and oncology at Moanalua Medical Center. “Creative expression is a unique and powerful way to process the difficulties of diagnosis and treatment and connect with other patients going through similar experiences.”

Originally modeled after the international Lilly Oncology on Canvas biennial art competition, Oncology on Canvas was brought to the islands by the Oncology Nursing Society in 2007, allowing patients and their families to share stories and support each other through art therapy. Art created from the event will be displayed in the oncology department at Moanalua Medical Center.

Only the Brave Foundation Supports Charity Music Event in Florence

LOVE SONG: Only the Brave Foundation is supporting That’s Live 2018, a charity music event taking place at Florence’s Artemio Franchi soccer stadium on July 21.
In particular, the foundation, established by OTB founder Renzo Rosso, has secured the participation of Courtney Love as the event’s special guest.
Love will sing her “Celebrity Skin” and “Malibu” hits, along with a still undisclosed cover song with guitarist Tad Kubler.
That’s Live 2018 is organized by Rockin’1000, an initiative established in 2015 that brings together 1,000 professional musicians on the same stage.
Part of the proceeds from the event will be donated to the San Patrignano rehab community located in Rimini, in Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region.
“The first time I saw the Rockin’1000 video, I thought, ‘I want to do that!’” said Love, referring to a video, which became viral online, featuring the 1,000 musicians playing Foo Fighters’ “Learn to Fly” song in Cesena in 2015. “The sight and sound of a thousand musicians connecting with their audience in this open, transcultural way was incredible. It reminded me of the early punk scene, with its community centered around diversity and acceptance. Monica Lewinsky Was Uninvited From Event After Bill Clinton RSVP’d

Don’t shade Monica Lewinsky and expect her to stay silent.

The 44-year-old motivational speaker took to Twitter on Wednesday, May 9, to reveal that an event rescinded her invitation after President Bill Clinton confirmed he would go.

“Dear world: please don’t invite me to an event (esp one about social change) and — then after I’ve accepted — uninvite me because Bill Clinton then decided to attend/was invited. it’s 2018,” she wrote. “and definitely don’t try to ameliorate the situation by insulting me with an offer of an article in your mag.”

Lewinsky, who had a sexual relationship with former President Clinton in 1998 during his time in office, has been outspoken about the affair’s impact on her life. Most recently, she made a splash for blasting a forthcoming HLN special titled The Monica Lewinsky Scandal in November 2017.

The fashion designer also spoke candidly about the relationship while giving a TED Talk in Vancouver, Canada, in March 2015. “Not a day goes by that I am not reminded of my mistake and I regret that mistake deeply,” she admitted. “In 1998, after having been swept up in an improbable romance, I was then swept into the eye of a political, legal, and media maelstorm like we had never seen before … I lost my reputation and dignity. I lost my sense of self.”

She also detailed the repercussions of the affair while speaking at a Forbes magazine summit in October 2014. “I was Patient Zero. The first person to have their reputation completely destroyed worldwide via the Internet. There was no Facebook, Twitter or Instagram back then, but there were gossip, news and entertainment websites replete with comment sections and emails which could be forwarded,” she explained. “Of course, it was all done on the excruciatingly slow dial up. Yet around the world this story went. A viral phenomenon that, you could argue, was the first moment of truly ‘social media.’”

Go Mad Redbull Event: Professional Surfers Teleport to Iconic Beaches Using Magic Surf Wax

REDBULL PRESS RELEASE

Oahu, Hawaii – (April 2018) – In the summer of 1987, surfing was on the cusp of mainstream popularity. The surf apparel industry was undergoing major changes and preparing to explode. Brands and surfers alike remained unknown to the mainstream, and athlete’s lifestyles held onto the mystic nature of easy- going surf culture.

Enter Mad Wax: a surf film that borrowed its title from a somewhat better known movie franchise, and was built around a block of surf wax with teleportation powers. The idea is that the surfer rubs the wax on the board, imagines where they want to surf in the world, and with an 80s-sound effect and some movie magic, they are immediately zapped to the location of their dreams to ride the wild surf of the world! “Surf films have evolved. I remember I used to watch surf movies in theaters and watch waveafter wave of perfect Pipeline” says Clarke-Jones, “I remember thinking, this is good for the first fewwaves, but then it gets boring. The evolution that came from films like Mad Wax and Kong’s Island felt like it was more expressive of what surfing was all about…having fun!”

Go Mad - Surf Wax

Mad Wax also launched the career of Ross Clarke-Jones (RCJ), a former championship tour surfer turned big wave pioneer and Storm Surfers 3D star who eventually became the first non-Hawaiian surfer to win The Eddie at the ever-infamous Waimea Bay.

RCJ went on to become one of Red Bull’s first ever southern hemisphere athletes, and at 51 years of age remains the longest serving Quiksilver athlete in history. Best yet, he still charges Nazaré with the same reckless abandon of someone less than half his age. In 2016, he was runner-up to John John Florence at the Eddie contest. Not only has RCJ not skipped a beat in his big-wave career, he’s continuing to push the envelope and reset the standards of big wave surfing.

30 years later, homage is finally being paid to the cult film that defines the surf culture of the
1980’s. Together with fellow athletes Caroline Marks (youngest ever person to qualify for the world tour in 2018), Kanoa Igarashi (2017 Pipe Masters runner-up) and Leo Fioravanti (World Tours only Italian surfer), RCJ is “passing on the wax” to a new generation. Upon giving his last remaining bars of the magicformula to these new surf prodigies,’ RCJ hopes it inspires them to ‘Go Mad!’

Go Mad Redbull Event: Professional Surfers Teleport to Iconic Beaches Using Magic Surf Wax

“Go Mad! is just a really fun way of giving everyone a unique look at surfing and giving us the chance show off our acting skills too,” laughs Marks. “There is nothing else like it out there and that’s whatmakes it special to be a part of!”

Complete with full ’80s effects and graphics, the 5-minute digital short also features music from GANGgajang – the Australian band that scored the original film and launched to success as a result.Check out the track and a whole slew of surfing’s most definitive tunes in a Spotify playlist curated byRed Bull Music: https://win.gs/Go-Mad-Spotify-Playlist

Three decades later the madness lives on and will be entrusted to the hands of surfing’s next generation. “Train hard, live a good lifestyle, but take some time to have fun and enjoy the ride… Go mad!” says Clarke-Jones.

ABOUT THE ATHLETES:

Kanoa Igarashi has been surfing for as long as he can remember. His dad first put him on a surfboard in his hometown of Huntington Beach, USA at the age of just three, and the Californian native hasn’t looked back since. Hetook to the sport with natural talent, competing in his first surf contest (which he won) at the age of six. Since then, Igarashi, whose parents immigrated to the US from Tokyo, Japan, has taken the surf world by storm. At age 14, he became the youngest surfer ever to win the US National Championships for under-18s and that same yearwon the Governor’s Cup at the Surfing America Championships and took second in the King of GromsChampionships. In addition to competitions, Igarashi has appeared in a bunch of stellar surf films, but his ultimate goal is to one day win the ASP World Championships – the most elite tour in surfing. If things keep going his way, that day might also be sooner than he thinks. “It’s a confidence booster knowing that younger people can stillcompete on the same level as the top pros,” he says.

Caroline Marks is determined to become the best surfer she can be, buoyed by multiple overall national titles and international crowns. Born in Boca Raton, Florida, and the face of the future for East Coast surfing, Caroline initially followed her two older brothers’ lead into the ocean before finding her own path on the competition circuit. Her competitive spirit and drive were awakened after winning her first event, a local neighborhood contest across the street from her house, at age nine. By 15, her impressive resume included 2016 International Surfing Association Under 16 Champion, 2015 and 2016 Vans US Open Pro Junior Champion, NSSA Open Girls National Champion of 2015 and 2016, member of the SpaceCoast Surfing Hall of Fame and 17 national titles. Caroline also currently holds the record for the youngest female to compete in a World Surf League Championship Tour event. Forced to sit out the 2015 season with a broken ankle, Caroline’s time away from the water afforded her the opportunity to grow mentally to complement her physical prowess. She missed the 2015 International Surf Association Championships as a result, but came back stronger than ever to win the 2016 event, putting the stamp on her full recovery. For Caroline, surfing is an accurate metaphor for life, in that learning to handle all of the variables Mother Nature throws at her is a necessary skill to possess and nurture as her career progresses. With her sights set on becoming the best female surfer, she is well on her way with an outstanding young career.

Leo Fioravanti’s an Italian original, transcending the boundaries, blasting the tail and carving on rail with the best surfers his age. He takes his act beyond the Mediterranean and turns heads wherever he goes. Family man andItalian food aficionado says that his most emotional career moment was “winning the Junior World Championships after six months without surfing.” Fioravanti’s biggest dream in life is to win the world league.

Fans Brave Freezing Weather for Chiara Ferragni Event

IN ABSENTIA: Chiara Ferragni is guaranteed a good turnout wherever she goes, but on Sunday, her fans thronged to an outdoor event in freezing Milan even though the influencer was bedridden thousands of miles away in Los Angeles.
“Chiara is doing better,” said Andrea Lorini, chief executive officer of Chiara Ferragni Collection, referring to Ferragni’s recent pregnancy scare.
The style star, who is engaged to Italian rapper Federico Lucia, known as Fedez, was ordered to rest by her doctor this week, triggering an outpouring of support from her 11.7 million followers on Instagram. She has canceled all her appointments for the next few months but was watching Sunday’s proceedings from afar, Lorini said.
Some onlookers huddled under foil survival blankets as they waited for the happening to start. Shortly after 2 p.m., models wearing outfits from Ferragni’s fall collection, titled Stardust, began to align on the scaffolding of a building on Corso Garibaldi in the heart of the city’s fashionable Brera district.

Shaun White Is Going For Gold in the Halfpipe at the 2018 Winter Olympics. Here’s What to Know About the Event

Snowboarding legend Shaun White is aiming for gold Wednesday morning in his signature event of the men’s halfpipe at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea.

After easily qualifying for the men’s snowboarding halfpipe finals Tuesday, White faces stiff competition heading into the finals, where he will square off against Australia’s Scotty James and Japan’s Ayumu Hirano.

The competition follows the women’s snowboarding halfpipe finals, where American phenom Chloe Kim won gold and became the youngest woman to do so in the event in Winter Olympics history.

That was just one gold medal in what has so far been a U.S. sweep of the sport, with Red Gerard and Jamie Anderson scoring gold in the men’s and women’s slopestyle events, respectively.

Before White, James and Hirano face off on the halfpipe in a battle for gold, here are several things to know about the snowboarding halfpipe event.

Rules of the snowboarding halfpipe event

Cameron Spencer—Getty ImagesShaun White of the United States competes during the Snowboard Men’s Halfpipe Qualification on day four of the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympic Games at Phoenix Snow Park on February 13, 2018 in Pyeongchang-gun, South Korea.

Set on a 22-foot halfpipe, the men’s halfpipe event at the Olympics includes a qualification round and a final round. The top 12 scorers from the qualifications, where athletes had two runs on the halfpipe to earn the best score possible, go on to the final round. There, they will have three runs down the halfpipe to earn their highest score, which can range from 1 to a perfect 100.

According to the rules set by the International Ski Federation (ISF), athletes compete in the finals in reserve order of when they qualified. So, because White had the top score in his qualifications, he will compete last amongst the 12 finalists Wednesday.

An athlete’s score is determined by a panel of six judges, who will rank the halfpipe run on a scale that goes up to 100. The lowest and highest amounts from the six judges are then removed, and the remaining four scores are averaged to create an athlete’s final score, according to the ISF.

A judge’s score comes as the result of a number of factors that determine how difficult a halfpipe run was. Here are a few of examples of how these factors fit into a score:

  • amplitude, or height, the more difficult the run
  • A controlled execution of tricks, rotations, speed and landing will make for a better score.
  • A variety of tricks makes for a good run.
  • Using the full pipe throughout the run.
  • Helping the sport’s progress with new tricks bodes well for judges.
  • An ability to take risks on the halfpipe is vital. But, as the ISF notes, judges want the athletes “to push their run to its maximum but not beyond.”
  • Performing a combination of difficult tricks and moves back-to-back, rather than separating them with easier ones.

Of course, athletes can be deducted for a number of mistakes, from small to large, during their runs. Though White had the highest score in qualifications going into the men’s halfpipe finals at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, he fell twice in Sochi during his first run and lost points that could have placed him on the podium. Luckily for White, he didn’t stop during those spills in Sochi. If a snowboarder stops on the halfpipe for more than 10 seconds, they can no longer earn any more points on their run and they must exit the course.

Snowboarding’s history at the Olympics

Final Half Pipe - Mens Snowboard
Adam Pretty—Getty ImagesShaun White of the United States (C) celebrates after winning the Gold Medal with teammate Daniel Kass (L) and Markku Koski of Finland in the Mens Snowboard Half Pipe Final on Day 2 of the 2006 Turin Winter Olympic Games on February 12, 2006 in Bardonecchia, Italy.

Spectators certainly did not see any snowboarders shredding the half pipe at the first Winter Olympics in 1924 in Chamonix, France. The sport of snowboarding and the halfpipe did not make its Olympics debut until the 1998 Games in Nagano, Japan. Back then, Switzerland’s Gian Simmen claimed the men’s halfpipe victory, and the U.S.’s Ross Powers earned bronze.

After that, the U.S. went on to dominate in the halfpipe event at the Olympics, with Powers securing gold at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, and his teammates Danny Kass and Jarret Thomas earning silver and bronze, respectively.

White took the lead from there, earning gold medals in the event in 2006 in Turin and 2010 in Vancouver. Iouri Podladtchikov brought home another gold for Switzerland in 2014 in Sochi when White failed to make it on the podium.

Similarly, the women’s halfpipe has been dominated by the U.S. Americans have won gold, silver or bronze in the event since it debuted in 1998. Kelly Clark was a stand-out for Team USA in the event, which she won gold in 2002 and bronze in 2010 and 2014. This year she placed fourth, behind her teammate and 17-year-old star Chloe Kim, who won gold, and the U.S.’s Arielle Gold, who won bronze.

Popular snowboarding halfpipe moves by top competitors

Cameron Spencer—Getty ImagesScotty James of Australia competes during the Snowboard Men’s Halfpipe Qualification on day four of the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympic Games at Phoenix Snow Park on February 13, 2018 in Pyeongchang-gun, South Korea.

With difficulty and risk-taking as a vital part of a snowboarder’s score in the halfpipe, the best athletes in the event often try to land technically challenging moves to appease the judges and improve their chances to get on the podium. The top three competitors in the men’s halfpipe this year — White, Hirano and James — have all landed impressive tricks before.

Here’s what we know about their spectacular moves:

In White’s most impressive run to date at the Winter Olympics qualifications earlier this year when he scored a perfect 100, White completed one 1440 and a double McTwist 1260, one of his signature moves that he first debuted in 2010. That tricky move includes three twists and two flips.

Hirano is the first snowboarder to land back-to-back double cork 1440s in the halfpipe run. He first landed the trick at the X Games Snowboard SuperPipe competition earlier this year, where he won with a nearly perfect score of 99.00.

James, who has voiced criticism over White’s perfect score of 100 earlier this year, has a signature move of his own. His backside, double cork 1260 includes three-and-a-half rotations with a blind landing — and he is the only snowboarder to land the move in competition.

Burberry Hosts Event Supporting ‘Be Cool Be Nice’ Antibullying Campaign

BURBERRY AGAINST BULLIES: “Growing up, my experiences would be of people criticizing and saying, ‘You can’t do this or you can’t do that,’” said Princess Beatrice at an event hosted by Burberry and Christopher Bailey, the brand’s president and chief creative officer, at Thomas’s Café in London this week.
“I think if I had something like ‘Be Cool Be Nice’ when I was growing up, I would feel very, very different. I would feel that support and I would feel that somebody was listening to me. I think the [antibullying] campaign is really challenging the sector and bringing a new light to how we think about the online versus the off-line world. I think more young people need to have these conversations. They need to know it’s OK.”
Burberry joined a bevy of brands including Emilio Pucci, Marc Jacobs, Dsquared2, Henry Holland and Mary Katrantzou who have participated over the past months in the “Be Cool Be Nice” campaign. The brands have taken a stand against cyberbullying of young adults and children. They have also contributed creatively to the 141-page book that includes activities and positive phrases that focus on kindness.
Princess Beatrice spoke about the initiative’s steps moving forward. “It’s about engagement

North Korea Pulls Out of a Cultural Event With South Korea Ahead of the Winter Olympics

(SEOUL, South Korea) — North Korea has cancelled one of the key joint cooperation projects with South Korea planned for next month’s Winter Olympics, officials said, further proving the delicate nature of ties between the rivals split for seven decades.

North Korea on Monday night sent a message saying it won’t hold a joint cultural event at the North’s Diamond Mountain on Feb. 4 to mark the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, according to Seoul’s Unification Ministry.

The ministry cited North Korea as saying it has no other option but to cancel the project because of South Korean media reports that it says defamed its “sincere” measures for the Olympics. The North also accused South Korean media of picking a fight over an unspecified domestic festival in North Korea, according to the ministry statement.

The statement said South Korea considers the North’s decision “very regrettable.”

The North didn’t say which media reports were at issue. But some reports had criticized the North’s plan to stage a major event to mark the 70th anniversary of the founding of its military on Feb. 8, just one day before the Olympics’ opening ceremony. South Korean officials have said the North plans a massive military parade on the anniversary.

It’s not clear how the latest development would affect other planned Olympics-related cooperation projects between the Koreas. They agreed to field a joint women’s hockey team and have their athletes parade together under a single flag during the Feb. 9 opening ceremony. A dozen North Korean hockey players arrived in North Korea last week to practice with the South Korean players.

North Korea has a history of last-minute cancellations and unexplained reversals, and some experts say it might have sought to gain concessions from the South. The visit earlier this month of a prominent band leader to inspect artistic venues in the South was delayed by North Korea but eventually took place.

The Koreas’ current reconciliation mood followed a year of heightened animosities over North Korea’s nuclear program. Many analysts say the North may want to use improved ties with South Korea to weaken U.S.-led pressure and sanctions on the country.

Angelina Jolie Brings Kids Maddox and Shiloh to Music Event Remembering the Cambodian Genocide

Angelina Jolie had quite a squad for her night out in New York City on Saturday, but all eyes were on her special guests: son Maddox and daughter Shiloh.

The group, which also included First They Killed My Father author Loung Ung, film director Rithy Panh and composer Him Sophy, posed for photos before attending Bangsokol: A Requiem for Cambodia at BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music).

The 42-year-old actress wore a beige trench coat. Shiloh, 11, donned a white shirt and black trousers, while Maddox, 16, picked up his own simple outfit with a black scarf.

The show combined the Metropolis Ensemble, the Taipei Philharmonic Chamber Choir and traditional Khmer vocalists and instruments to pay tribute to the nearly two million victims of the Cambodian genocide, according to BAM’s website.

This is the second family outing of the weekend. On Friday, the filmmaker brought along four of her children to accompany her to the 2017 United Nations Correspondents Association Awards at Cipriani Wall Street, where Jolie was honored as the 2017 UNCA Global Citizen of the year.

She was photographed at the event alongside her sons Pax, 14, Knox, 9, and daughters Zahara, 12 and Shiloh, 11. While both Pax and Zahara opted for all-black outfits, Knox and Shiloh both wore black suits with white dress shirts underneath.

And while the actress’ other two children  — Maddox, 16, and Vivienne, 9 — were not present for the event, there was a good reason why they decided to sit the night out. “Vivienne had an upset tummy and big brother Maddox stayed with her,” a source told PEOPLE.

Earlier this year, Jolie brought all six of her children to the premiere of her Netflix movie, First They Killed My Father, at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival.

Based on Cambodia human rights activist Ung’s memoirFirst They Killed My Father documents her experience as a young girl under the brutal rule of the Khmer Rouge. The film is a passion project for Jolie, who said she was motivated to make the film by Maddox, who was born in Cambodia.

Arrowverse Character Perishes in 4-Night Crossover Event

SPOILER ALERT: This article contains spoilers from the Arrowverse crossover episodes “Crisis on Earth-X Parts 1-4.” Proceed with caution.

The epic four-night DCTV crossover episodes “Crisis on Earth-X” concluded this evening. Needless to stay The CW delivered on their promise of a true four show crossover, which engaged characters from Supergirl, The Flash, Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow. Sadly, while our titular heroes were fighting their doppelgängers on Earth-X, one of the show’s main heroes was mortally wounded and died.

An Arrowverse Father

Victor Garber is Professor Martin Stein, AKA Firestorm.

Firestorm, in the middle of a gun fight, decided to split up to accomplish two separate tasks. While Jax was able to complete his task, Stein was shot before he could finish his. The gunfire was terrible, but Stein decided to push through it and turn on the power to the portal. As he turned the power on, he was hit with multiple bullets.

Jax was able to get Stein onto the Waverider, but he had lost too much blood to be saved. The only thing keeping Stein alive was his connection to Jax. Unfortunately this connection was killing Jax, so Stein had to make a decision. Stein asked Jax to give him the medicine that would separate them, and he did.

Stein was dead within seconds. After the heroes defeated all of their Earth-X doubles, a funeral was held for Stein. There was not a dry eye in attendance. His wife was there — Clarissa — as well as his daughter Lily and her new baby Ronnie. Jax broke the news to Stein’s family and they mourned with all the Legends, Kara, Alex, Team Arrow and Team Flash.

It was absolutely devastating to lose Professor Stein. He has been a key character in the Arrowverse since The Flash Season 1. He has been a father figure to Jax since they became Firestorm. He has been a mentor and leader to all of the Legends, to Sara Lance, to Heatwave, to Nate, to Ray, to everyone. Legends of Tomorrow will be irreparably different without him.

Goodbye Professor, we’ll miss you. “More we cannot wish you” than to hear your sweet singing voice in the stars.

Business Event Planning Tips Entrepreneurs Need to Know

If you are considering planning an event, one often overlooked question to ask yourself is, “Why do I want to have a live event and what is the end goal or purpose of my event?” Event planning, without a defined and desired result, along with a specific plan of action to get there, is one of the biggest mistakes entrepreneurs make.

(Image: iStock/monkeybusinessimages)

Vicki Irvin has successfully planned and executed the Extreme Women Entrepreneurs Event for seven years. Irvin provided ready-to-implement information for event planning:

– Your event should support the purpose of your work or expertise, which often means bringing together like-minded people on the same mission looking for useful information.

-Know your ideal dream clients and target them in your marketing plan to fill the room. If there is a mismatch in any way, the event will not achieve its goal.

-Work with an event planner who is also an expert at venue/space negotiations. When you’re in the seminar business, getting your space as cost effectively as possible is crucial to your bottom line.

-Identify all potential streams of income from the event because you can profit far beyond registration fees. There are product and service sales, as well as revenue shares with speakers who complement what you do while providing value for your attendees. Your stage is not a place to “test” out new speakers. To protect your brand, be sure to choose speakers who are proven professionals.

While all of the things mentioned are important, one of the hardest things to do is fill your event. A marketing strategy is needed in advance, along with ample lead time. For example. I start marketing my live events at least 4-5 months in advance, and I would suggest you give yourself even more time when possible. I

If you are new and don’t have a following, your event will start off smaller in size, which is perfectly fine. Focus on the quality of your audience versus the quantity. Even when you are established, filling a live event remains the top challenge. Just ask all the people who have had to cancel, or resort to giving away tickets for free.

Some of my favorite marketing strategies are Facebook advertising and live streaming about the event. Other strategies include holding webinars about your event to get people excited so that they know what to expect, and for them to determine if it is a perfect fit for them.

Profitable live events can be an excellent stream of income for your business when done right. You should ensure that everything you do when planning your live event supports getting you to your end goal. Attending an event is a time commitment for attendees, so be sure to deliver on your promises.

FASHION DEALS UPDATE:

2017 Nelscott Reef Big Wave Event

LINCOLN CITY, Oregon, September 25th, 2017: The premier big wave event at Nelscott Reef returns for the 2017/2018 big wave season as a Pro/Am event, presented by 10 Barrel Brewing. The Nelscott Pro/Am will bring some of the best big wave surfers from around the world, along with local big names in the field to compete in a single day’s competition.

Organizers are excited about this year, as the event has once again opened the invite list to include amateurs as well as professionals. After an overwhelming response to an initial call for interest, organizers, Adam Wagner and Gabe Smith decided to open the field to both. “I was a little surprised how many people wanted to be included this year. I knew it was going to be a good event this year, but we doubled the amount of interest from last year in just the first 24 hours of making the announcement. We are super excited with the diversity of the invite list”, said Gabe Smith.

Nelscott Reef was also the first big wave event to include women, which helped pave the way for other big wave events to open their doors as well, including the World Surf League’s Big Wave Tour. The women will be invited back for the third time to compete at Nelscott Reef for 2017. “We are announcing the main invite list now for both the men and women. Due to the unprecedented interest in the event, we have decided to try something different with the alternates for this year.

10 Barrel Brewing’s 2017 Nelscott Reef Pro Am

We will be holding a random drawing for the 10 alternates during our opening ceremony, which we will announce in the next coming days. We feel this is the best way to accommodate the additional 35+ qualified surfers who expressed interest in a fair, unbiased, and competitive manner”, said Wagner.
In order to run the event, organizers are looking for 30’ or higher surf, with little to no wind and good visibility. Conditions like this are rare in the Pacific Northwest and only happen on a few days of the year, sometimes for just a few hours. The event operates on a traffic light system, waiting for the right combination of weather and swell.

Event Director, Adam Wagner, explains the system. “Red light means there is no potential swell in the near future. We will move to yellow if we see a developing system in the Pacific that looks like it will produce the right conditions. We will go to green with 72 hours notice to athletes and sponsors. We have a great team of forecasters, including our sponsor, Surfline, that have been running the event at Nelscott for the past 12 years and know the fickle characteristics of Oregon’s fall weather.” said Wagner.

The organizers take safety of the athletes very seriously, and have brought in Eric Akiskalian from Towsurfer.com to help lead the team. Eric brings 15 years of experience at Nelscott Reef and knows all of the unique and logistical challenges to this spot better than anyone.

“One of the biggest challenges we have is simply getting everyone out to the reef in a timely and safe manner. On big days, you just can’t paddle out thru the pounding beach break. You need a PWC assist, and even then, it takes a lot of jockeying around on a ski to punch through 20’ beach break.” said Akiskalian. “Once out there, we operate on a man on man basis, one ski for each surfer in the water. We have some of the best watermen in the world operating the skis, while constantly focusing on risk management and keeping everyone safe throughout the event.”

Nelscott Reef is the best big wave break in the Pacific Northwest, and it’s unique location 1/2 mile off the coast, makes it one of the most accessible. Athletes launch right from the beach and spectators can watch from the beach or on top of the cliffs in Lincoln City.

For 10 Barrel Brewing’s 2017 Nelscott Reef Pro Am those that can’t make it to Lincoln City on the day of the event, the team will be providing a live webcast.

Fulfilling Her Dreams as a Luxury Event Planner While Holding Down a 9-to-5

Adesola Rosiji is no stranger to the hustle. As a Nigerian-American who was raised by parents who both have entrepreneurial hearts and spirits, Rosiji is familiar with working hard.

That’s why when she had the opportunity to pursue her passion as an event planner while utilizing some of the skills she’s acquired working full-time as a project manager for a healthcare company, she went for it.

So how does she merge her event planning business with a full-time career? In this interview with Black Enterprise, she shares some of her secrets, as well as her inspiration for launching the business, and challenges she has faced along the way.

(Image: Adesola Rosiji)

What inspired you to start ‘’AdeXperience Events”?

I have always enjoyed planning my own birthday parties, barbecues, and graduation parties. I always found a reason to celebrate just so I could throw a party. The real inspiration and drive started when two of my close friends asked if I could plan his wife’s baby shower and the other was to plan a private 30th birthday dinner. These events were both so successful I decided to turn my passion into a business and here I am now as AdeXperience!

How did you come up with the name?

I always knew I wanted my event planning business to represent luxury and I wanted to offer my clients a luxury experience. My name “Ade” means crown or royalty. So in a nutshell “AdeXperience” means a royal/luxury experience so I thought this name would best represent my brand.

In the early stages of starting your company you’ve already worked with top names in the industry, such as Karen Civil, etc. How did you establish these relationships?

Early on when I started my business I was approached to do sponsorships. Doing several sponsorships allowed me to create the relationships I needed and also allowed me to build my brand. Through these sponsorships, I was able to work with Karen Civil, Claire Sulmers, Marlo Hampton, and other leading women in the industry.

Now that you are becoming an established name in the event planning industry, what’s been your most memorable moment so far?

My most memorable moment so far was meeting Karen Civil and Claire Sulmers of Fashion Bomb Daily. Sometimes in life we think things are so farfetched but when you work hard on your craft and perfect it, I’ve learned anything can happen. I literally spoke it into existence and a few weeks later I received a call to do both dinners.

What have been your biggest challenges in starting your own company and how do you work to overcome them?

My biggest challenge starting my own company is having to do everything on my own and that includes research on every item the client may want and also making things that are not available, available. There are so many logistics that go into planning an event, and as a planner you have to use what works for you. I stay positive and remain focused and always have an alternate plan to getting things complete. I also hired an intern last year to assist me with events and that has worked remarkably well.

Is it difficult for you to maintain a full-time career, along with your side-hustle?

It can be very difficult balancing two full-time jobs. I honestly wouldn’t consider my event planning as a side hustle at this point. Event planning is my career and I am currently transitioning and trying to make this “my full-time career” with a lot of other ideas I have brewing.

What’s next for AdeXperience Events?

I will officially be launching my website adexperienceevents.com. If you are reading this now check out the site. I have so many ideas brewing and so many projects that I am working on. I will be launching an e-commerce site as well in the near future so stay tuned for that.

FASHION DEALS UPDATE:

Lisa “The Inventress” Ascolese Covers Exclusive ‘Shark Tank’ Season 9 Premiere Event

Shark Tank

Calling all inventors and entrepreneurs: Have you ever wondered what happens on the set Shark Tank, the critically acclaimed and multi-Emmy ® Award-winning ABC reality show that has reinvigorated entrepreneurship in America? Lucky for YOU, I’ve documented my journey to Los Angeles where Season Nine of Shark Tank was filmed and I share how the innovative magic happens below.

Lisa Ascolese (Image: Lisa Ascolese)

Here’s a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the lives of the iconic, innovative souls and superstar “Sharks” who, over the years, have helped shape and mold what entrepreneurship is to date.

As most of you know, I reside in the NYC area, and so naturally, I chose to fly out of EWR Newark, New Jersey into Los Angeles, California LAX. For the line of work I do, flying is a daily practice. When you are an entrepreneur, always have a bag packed and be ready to take the next flight out whenever to wherever. Here’s the thing, you need to go where opportunities arise. And most of the time, opportunities don’t stay around forever. Act fast and always be prepared to move.

As I settled down in my seat, I reached for my journal. Fun fact! You will never find The Inventress in flight without these three staples: pencil, journal, and a bottle of sparkling water. I do most of my creative brainstorming on planes or during long car rides. I choose to journal in pencil for many reasons but most predominantly because the direction of my thoughts change continuously. I am always searching for the next innovative idea. Before I knew it, we arrived in beautiful, L.A.—one of my favorite cities in the entire world! My flights always seem to zip by so quickly because I tend to sink into a writers coma…  (Ha!) And now, the real fun begins…

I took an Uber (shout out to an ingenious company) to my hotel. And because I arrived late at night, once I checked in, I completely checked out and it was time to catch some zzz’s. Jet lag will do that to you, my friends.

The following morning I woke up from my slumber at approximately 5 AM. Regardless of the West Coast time difference, my body knows not to sleep past that mark. Although I followed my typical morning routine; journal, yoga, juice, emails, etc., my routine added in some additions that I must say, I wasn’t too inconvenienced by. In fact, I was elated to add them to the list. Following my delicious organic green juice and a few thousand client emails (just kidding… it was only a few hundred), I began to prepare for my big day as a consultant on the set of Shark Tank. I got busy preparing topics of discussion, questions, background information and fun facts. I couldn’t wait to arrive and collaborate with like-minded individuals who share the same passions as me! I am inspired by people who live their purpose… because I live mine.

And we’re off! A beautiful stretch limo arrived to my hotel at 8 am sharp to bring me to Culver City aka my Shark Tank family.

For those of you who aren’t too familiar with the television industry, it takes a village of hardworking, passionate, and focused individuals to make a production (of any size) come to fruition. Excuses and exhaustion do not exist… especially on Hollywood sets. And here’s why; Shark Tank films for approximately 10-12 hours a day. There is very limited time to capture all that needs capturing and so, each minute must be valued at its highest level. Also meaning, everyone must perform at their best all day, every day.

Upon settling into to my designated area, I am greeted by one of the most highly respected businessmen in the entire world, Mark Cuban! Mark is extremely kind, patient and humble. And although this was day seven of filming 10-12 hour days, he had no complaints and was standing strong. Our conversation was short, yet riveting. Time was not on our side as it was time to film and business is business. One thing Mark shared with me I find worth mentioning is his passion behind building schools across the country. To him, education is priceless and he will do what it takes to ensure children have an opportunity to indulge in creativity and arts.

I then witnessed an amazing product pitch…. top secret information! You’ll have to tune into Season Nine to experience this innovation.

We were all given a small break and it was at that time I was introduced to a full of smiles, Robert Herjavec. Robert is the jokester of the group. Always looking for a laugh, very pleasant and adds a fresh perspective into the mix. I was elated to connect with him and share our similarities. We both share a strong creative vision.

Next up, I reconnected with Daymond John and I was thrilled! It had been a minute since I had last seen Daymond and so getting ready for the day, I was excited to reconnect with a man whose work ethic and creativity I admire so much. Daymond has always been extremely focused and driven. In that moment, he was also very serious. You could tell he was there to get the job done and I cannot tell you how much I admire his outlook when it comes to the workplace. Fun fact! I will share this with you… the minute his beautiful daughter, Minka arrived on set, his entire demeanor changed! That little girl lights up his entire world and gives him life. It was a beautiful sight to see… oh, the joy of being a parent!

Time flies when you’re having fun… it was officially time for lunch. The cuisine was delicious and I had the honor of enjoying it while mingling with some of the Sharks. It was here I connected with Season Nine guest Shark, Bethenny Frankel and my QVC neighbor, Lori Greiner. Both Bethenny and Lori are fabulous, powerful women who lift others up, two hands at a time! This was my first time meeting Bethenny and her aura is wonderful. She is a very classy lady and extremely intelligent. As for Lori, it was also a delight reconnecting with her. Although we both run circles at The Q, it’s a nice treat seeing your colleagues outside of your typical workspace. And I must note, Lori’s outfit was stunning. She has a new clothing line launching soon and I highly recommend you check it out!

Other notes worth mentioning…

The entire Sony/ABC team deserves to be recognized for treating everyone on that set like family. For me personally, it was one of the most sincere welcomes I have ever experienced. The team’s hospitality and warmth is something I will never forget and admire deeply. And mind you, every single team member held these spectacular standards. It did not matter if you were an executive producer, intern, or an assistant, everyone was kind, everyone was caring and everyone was hard at work because they loved their job. I cannot explain how important it is to love what you do. Being passionate keeps you going… makes you feel alive… it invigorates your soul! Find something that lights up your world and I promise you, YOU will NEVER work a day in your life.

And in the blink of an eye, the filming of Shark Tank Season Nine wrapped! What now? I take you behind-the-scenes to the after party…. and trust me, you don’t want to miss this!

There was no time for me to change. So ladies and gentlemen, always be prepared to spice your outfit up or down. In this industry, time is never on your side. Fortunately, I was already dressed to the nines (my mother always said it was better to be over-dressed than under-dressed). But of course, The Inventress always travels with accessories to give her outfit that extra splash of fun. I can’t help it… I’m innovative!

The after-party vibe was super edgy, sexy, and cool. Between the karaoke, Shark Tank-themed cocktails, and old school music, we all had a blast! A weight was lifted off of everyone’s shoulders now that the season had officially ended filming. This was a celebration…. Mark Cuban changed out of his suit and switched to sweats! It was nice to be able to let your hair down in a judgment-free zone. The entire cast and crew was invited! No one was left out and everyone celebrated together as one big, happy family. Barbara Corcoran was missed deeply as she was rehearsing with her Dancing with the Stars partner, Keo. Not to worry, we will catch up with her toward the end of this blog!

Following the party, it was time for bed. I got into my limo and as I was driven back to my hotel, I thanked God for the life that I currently have. Not many people get the opportunity to live their dreams, meet their passions, and surround themselves with others who truly want to see them succeed. I, in that moment, reminded myself how truly blessed I am and why it is so important for me to help others get to that same space. I strongly believe in lifting each other up, two hands at a time!

Upon entering my hotel room, I had the biggest smile on my face. I was so grateful for that wonderful night, with wonderful people I now consider family. Within five minutes I was out for the count… tomorrow would be the most exciting, yet most labor intensive day of the trip as I would be working my magic on the red carpet.

Once again, I woke up at 5 AM to begin my day. By now, you probably have my routine memorized… journal, yoga, juice, emails, etc., and once again my routine added in some additions. This time, I was studying the media deck Sony, ABC, and Black Enterprise magazine supplied me with. The deck consisted of headshots of every single Shark and guest Shark, their respective bios and facts. It was my job to memorize each page to the best of my ability and also come up with unique questions to ask everyone at the red carpet premiere. I studied the pages for hours and organized my questions all while continuing to run my for-profit-business, Inventing A-to-Z; my nonprofit business, The Association of Women Inventors and Entrepreneurs; and balancing my family from L.A.

And now, it was time to get this show on the road…

The press event took place at the gorgeous, Paley Center in Beverly Hills, California. My driver picked me up early to ensure I took my place on the red carpet with time to spare. Beverly Hills is a fabulous sight to see. The views are spectacular, the environment is innovative and rich. I gathered myself together and got out of the limo. God is good my friends… I ended up sharing an elevator ride with one of my childhood idols, Alfonso Ribeiro! I adored Fresh Prince of Bel Air.… what a wonderful trip down memory lane! Alfonso and I enjoyed a beautiful chat. He is so very warm, loving and overall a super cool guy. I knew he was going to be the Shark Tank Premiere Panel Moderator following the red carpet, but it was so nice to share this intimate moment with him.

As we both stepped off the elevator, we went in different directions. Alfonso went inside the building to prep for his moderating position, while I took my place on the carpet to interview the stars. The atmosphere was chaotic. Press was everywhere you turned. It was a unique experience to be behind-the-scenes as an interviewer, as I am typically in front of the camera for these types of events. That said, I wouldn’t change it for the world! I was honored to have been granted this experience through my dear friend Brandon Andrews, top talent scout for Shark Tank and my Black Enterprise magazine family whom I also adore.

For those of you who are not in the entertainment industry, here is another fun fact you will find interesting. As I settled into my spot on the carpet, I was surrounded by every single major media network you could imagine… E!, Extra, etc…. it was fascinating! Press people mean business. It is all a competition, and what I mean by that is, just because you have a designated space on the carpet, does not guarantee you an interview with every star because, once again, time is not on your side. And so, each reporter must go to battle to ensure their network gets the coverage they are looking to achieve by interviewing the stars they admire most. I am always up for a challenge. When I put my mind to something, nothing and no one will stop me and so, I was 100% positive I was going to do whatever it took to get Black Enterprise and my fan base the coverage they deserved!

The talent starts to arrive and everyone looks dapper, super elegant, and chic! Not to mention, the rooftop where the premiere was taking place overlooked the iconic Hollywood sign. Simply priceless!

My first interview was with Mark Cuban. I was thrilled to connect with him after all the fun the entire cast had the previous night. Mark shared that fans will be blown away by Season Nine. He is still so honored and humbled to be a part of something so special and that to me is commendable. Fame certainly hasn’t gone to his head… he does this because he loves it, not because he has to. He is truly blessed.

My next interview was with Bethenny Frankel. She is such a doll! She placed emphasis on taking nothing for granted in life… she is extremely proud to be a guest Shark this season and has many surprises in store for the viewers! And I must also mention, she was gracious and dressed beautifully!

Next up, Daymond John. Daymond is very comfortable in front of a camera. You could tell he was excited to launch the new season and hear everyone’s thoughts. He is a very cool, honest entrepreneur. I also had the opportunity to present him with a Humanitarian Award on behalf of my nonprofit organization, The Association of Women Inventors and Entrepreneurs or  “AOWIE.” He was completely blown away and humbled. We as an AOWIE family, are thrilled to honor him!

And finally… it was about time! I had the opportunity to connect with Barbara Corcoran. She had been missing during the majority of filming as she was also juggling a cast role on Dancing with the Stars. She is funny as hell and sweet as pie! She stood out in a beautifully detailed and tailored bright orange suit. We bonded over innovative thoughts and had some real girl talk! I love that woman with all my heart!

Rohan Oza… such a fun, silly down-to-earth businessman! One of his biggest projects to date is the beverage drink, Bai, which he collaborates with Justin Timberlake on. The minute he started talking about Bai during our interview… I naturally had to start singing his own commercial to him! And guess what? He LOVED it! Listen guys… sometimes you have to put yourself out there. Never be afraid to be true to yourself! When you’re genuine, you are able to build connections with others in a more organic way.

And… Mr. Kevin O’ Leary….

Kevin is misunderstood. And I hate to blow his cover but…. he is absolutely wonderful!!! He is extremely personable. Kevin took his time on the carpet by giving each network an extremely generous amount of his time. He even started asking ME questions during our interview!

I also had the opportunity to speak with Jennifer Lopez and her beau (and guest Shark) Alex Rodriguez. Both are very pleasant, creative, and charming!

Following the red carpet… there was a special panel discussion hosted by Alfonso Ribeiro inside of the building with all of the Sharks and Guest Sharks for Season Nine. The panel was very interesting and the commentary from others was brilliant!

The entire cast acts like one big family. Everyone is super playful, have a great sense of humor, and push each other to be the best version of themselves. A common theme most touched on was how they started and how they now use their platforms for good.

For me, Alex Rodriguez stood out of the crowd. He shared that when he was young, he loved sports and knew that one day he wanted to get into the field. However, he was fearful that if that happened, he would go broke after hearing horror stories. And so, he started investing his money at a young age and continues to do so on a much larger scale present day.

Daymond also shared some very inspiring, insightful words of wisdom. He spoke about how you don’t need to have a famous last name and a truckload of money to make a difference in this world or build an empire. He placed emphasis on having a hustle mentality and pursuing only things you are passionate about. He is very humble and inspired many.

As I was leaving, I bumped into Barbara Corcoran’s brother and his beautiful wife. Both are so genuine and full of life. Her brother, Ed, is an ingenious graphic artist and has his own company. But something about him was different. Instead of talking about himself and his own business (which is extremely successful and worth mentioning) he instead, spent the majority of our conversation highlighting his sister. Explaining how proud he was of her and how lucky he was to be a part of her life. That is true love. That is family values. That is, precisely how we should aspire to act. Instead of being so self-driven, take time to lift others up and recognize their success. He is a special man, and Barbara, you are a very lucky sister. I am a big believer in speaking things into existence, and so publicly, I’d like to take a moment to formally invite Ms. Barbara Corcoran to be a speaker at The Association of Women Inventors and Entrepreneurs “AOWIE” Conference on August 18, 2018, in the NYC area.

Before my Los Angeles trip came to a close, I knew it was imperative for me to capture all of my emotions via journal in that moment. And so, instead of taking my limo back to my hotel, I decided to walk the streets of Rodeo Drive, journal in one hand, pencil in the other. I walked, I wrote, I walked, I wrote… until finally it was time to go back to my hotel, pack up my belongings and head back to NYC.

I am so looking forward to future collaborations with all of the magnificent people I met during my stay in LA. For anyone reading this, I want you to realize that you too, can be a part of something this special! YOU are no different than I am. In fact, we all have the same 24 hours in a day. Please realize this is 38 years’ worth of me grinding to get to this place. My success wasn’t created overnight… Passion, hard work, perseverance, dedication, and inspiration got me to this space and I am here to help you get to this space as well. Never…. and I mean never be afraid to ask for help, seek guidance, or find a mentor. Find a way to turn “no” into “yes.” And always grab the opportunities God places in front of you with all of your might and run as fast as you can. And when you get to your place of achievement, always bring someone with you. I always say it, but it is true! There is so much room at the top… let’s share it together and lift each other up, two hands at a time!

And before I end, I must thank many people who deserve to be credited. Please realize, I am not the only one involved with making this entire experience come to fruition. I have my own village (quite literally).

Brandon Andrews, thank you for your innovative mind, huge heart and beautiful friendship.

Clay Newbill, Mark Burnett, Yun Lingner and Phil Gurin; thank you for your kindness, ingenious wit, passion and hard work. (Television Producers)

And finally, Daymond John, thank you for publicly accepting your AOWIE Achievement Award and now being an honorary member of our organization, The Association of Women Inventors and Entrepreneurs.

Until next time my friends….

WSL Holds Groundbreaking Test Event at Kelly Slater’s Surf Ranch

WSL PRESS RELEASE

LEMOORE, California/USA (Wednesday, September 20, 2017) – The World Surf League (WSL) held a test event at Kelly Slater’s Surf Ranch in Lemoore, CA yesterday, evaluating the new technology as it pertains to performance, competitive format, broadcast and spectator interaction as well as overall experience.

“Having the ability to replicate, even partially, the power and shape of ocean waves for anyone in the world, in any location and at any time is a truly magical thing,” said Sophie Goldschmidt, WSL Chief Executive Officer. “The WSL intends to learn a lot – how this technology can be applied to live competition, how the surfers perform, how waves are scored, how we cover in broadcast, the overall experience that we can create and what it feels like to witness this kind of surfing.”

Surf Ranch played host to a cross-section of the world’s best surfers to run the groundbreaking test. John John Florence (HAW), Jordy Smith (ZAF), Matt Wilkinson (AUS), Adriano de Souza (BRA), Filipe Toledo (BRA), Gabriel Medina (BRA), Joel Parkinson (AUS), Adrian Buchan (AUS), Mick Fanning (AUS), Kanoa Igarashi (USA), Tyler Wright (AUS), Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), Carissa Moore (HAW), Courtney Conlogue (USA), Sage Erickson (USA), Silvana Lima (BRA), Pauline Ado (FRA) and Johanne Defay (FRA) acted as test pilots for the competitive format, with prize money going to charity.

“This is just a magical day, I can’t believe it,” said six-time WSL Champion Gilmore. “Every single wave is so much fun and challenging and nerve wracking. That was just so special!”

Also on site was 11X WSL Champion Kelly Slater (USA) as well as seven founding members of the sport of surfing: Peter Townend, Shaun Tomson, Wayne Bartholomew, Mark Richards, Ian Cairns, Randy Rarick and Fred Hemmings.

“I’m just blown away by the whole project and to see it in real life is so amazing,” said Richards. “The wave is actually way bigger in real life that it looks on video. It’s been an incredible experience to be here and see the surfing.”

Yesterday’s event saw 18 surfers battle through two preliminary rounds, with each surfer getting the chance to ride four waves (two in each direction) and their highest-scoring left and highest-scoring right hand waves combined to make their heat total. The four top scoring male and female surfers advanced on to the finals.

“It’s perfect. It’s that wave that we dream about, the one that we draw on paper,” Toledo said. “The one that you dream about — being able to surf it, fitting in the barrel for 20 seconds and make it out and turns, turns, and then a final maneuver. Just, mind blown.”

On the men’s side it was Medina, Toledo, Igarashi and Buchan that made it through to the Final and on the women’s it was Moore, Gilmore, Wright and Defay. Eventually it was WSL Champions Medina and Moore that came out on top and claimed victory at the historic event.

“It feels amazing,” said Moore. “I just didn’t think it was going to be possible to win so I’m so pleased.”

“I’m so stoked to be part of history,” Medina said. “This is such an incredible day for surfing, and I’m really proud to be a part of it.”

WSL Set To Kick Off East Coast Vans Pro QS3,000 And Pro Junior Event

WSL PRESS RELEASE

HUNTINGTON BEACH, California/ USA (Monday, August 21, 2017) – The World Surf League (WSL) begins its East Coast takeover tomorrow, beginning with the Vans Pro Men’s Qualifying Series (QS) 3,000 and Pro Junior that will run August 22 through 27. Some of the top QS contenders are in Virginia Beach, Virginia with 3,000 vital points on offer for those looking to make a leap toward Championship Tour (CT) qualification. This marks the seventh-straight year the 1st Street Jetty will host some of the Men’s QS elite which has crowned past winners such as Kolohe Andino (USA), Patrick Gudauskas (USA), and Kanoa Igarashi (USA).

Alongside the QS contingent, the Vans Pro Junior hosts some of North America’s next up-and-coming surfers as they compete against international talent for a chance at earning crucial points toward World Junior Championships qualification.

Evan Geiselman (USA) joined the exquisite list of QS winners after his victory last year — over hometown hero and former victor Michael Dunphy (USA). The New Smyrna Beach, Florida native continued a dream run year with a win here in 2016, after earning 6,000 points in Chiba, Japan earlier in the summer. Geiselman’s 2017 hasn’t quite yielded the results he’d like, aside from a win in Cocoa Beach. But, after claiming a Hurley Pro Trestles Trials win, he found more rhythm with a Round Five appearance at the Vans US Open of Surfing QS10,000 which moved him 18 spots to No. 44 on the QS.

“I’m really looking forward to Virginia Beach, especially being from the East Coast since it’s the biggest event on the coast and it’s always fun to compete here,” Geiselman said. “It was cool to win the trials for a spot into Lowers and make some heats at the US Open. I had a pretty slow start to this year, but feel like I’m starting to find some confidence for this back half of the season. So the plans like always — keep it light, fun and enjoy it and try to make as many heats as I can.”

Dunphy’s runner-up performance last year was his best since his victory in 2014 — a year that witnessed him contest for a CT qualification position heading into Hawaii. Born and raised in Virginia Beach, Dunphy now spends most of his time traveling or in New Smyrna Beach with family. But, the 27-year-old never forgets his roots and returns home for a shot at reclaiming his Vans Pro glory.

“Last year was a good run for me here and anytime you make a Final in an event I think you can walk away happy,” Dunphy said. “I felt my surfing was good and I was basically just one wave away from winning the event again. For me, Virginia Beach is just a special place even though I don’t spend much time here these days. It’s where I first learned to surf so all my early memories of surfing and competing come from 1st Street Jetty. When I won in 2014, with all my friends rushing me as I came in, that’s a day I will never forget. That event was the one that kickstarted my run of being close to qualifying. Hopefully I can find some momentum that same way this year, as I know I have only improved as a surfer since then.”

Stop No. 4 of the North America Pro Junior Tour has its own list of noteworthy winners such as 2016 North America Regional Champion Nolan Rapoza (USA) — who ended the Hawaiian reign. Both Seth and Josh Moniz (HAW), Kaito Kino (HAW), and Keanu Asing (HAW) all won in consecutive years beginning in 2012 after Nat Young (USA) earned a win at the inaugural Vans Pro Junior in 2011. It will be up to the likes of San Clemente, California’s newest upstart, Crosby Colapinto (USA), to secure another win away from the international field in appearance.

Colapinto’s second year on the Pro Junior Tour has yielded much more success than his debut year in 2016 with help of his older brother and current QS No. 5 Griffin Colapinto (USA). Now, he currently sits in a qualification spot toward the World Junior Championships with a chance to help solidify that position in Virginia Beach.

“I am very excited to see what is coming,” Colapinto said. “Being in a qualifying spot for Worlds is awesome because I think it will give me some confidence and momentum going into the last few contest. But, to keep this momentum up it will take a lot of hard work and training. I will also be running some fun heats with my brother [Griffin] and learn more heat strategies. A big change that I saw in my surfing on the competitive side is that I am more patient in the water and also I tend to not stress as much in heats. My brother and I like to go down to our local break ,T-Street and run heats to work on our strategy. Some goals that I would like to achieve would be to win a Pro Junior and make Worlds, and then be in a QS6,000 in about 2 years.”

The Vans Pro Men’s QS3,000 and Pro Junior will run August 22 through 27 in coordination with the historical East Coast Surfing Championships (ECSC) — the world’s second-longest running contest, now in its 55th year, behind Bells’ Beach.

With Tech week 2017 right around the corner, do you have time next week to discuss ways we can help each other reach our goals?

Hi John,

It was great meeting you at the Photo Camp & Workshop event. I took your advice on how to bring still photos to life with animation. I also watched your profile on “ABC This Morning”—I’m even more inspired by your work. You mentioned the need for an intern. Do you have any time this week to discuss this opportunity?

Hi Tim,

I had a great time talking with you about the show Shark Tank. I’m still laughing at your impersonation of “Mr. Wonderful.” I’ve included your tips for investor pitch decks in my presentation for women-led startups. Feel free to share (include link).

Hi Cary,

It was really nice meeting you at the Black Enterprise Women of Power Summit. I noticed on your Snapchat that you’re working on an e-book about salary negotiation tips for women. While hosting a Walmart shareholders meeting in Fayetteville, Arkansas, on Friday, Reese Witherspoon taught one Walmart employee a little trick she picked up from her role in “Legally Blonde.” It’s called the Bend and Snap, and in case you didn’t know, it has a 98 percent success rate in getting a man’s attention and an 83 percent rate of return on a dinner invitation.

Apparently, it also helps Walmart employees look super cute while stocking shelves:

Yep, he’s a natural.
