The trailer starts off like it's a normal World War II drama, albeit the kind with lots of action…

Everything You Need to Know About ‘Fortnite’ Season 5

It seems like only yesterday that we were mourning the loss of Dusty Depot and celebrating the new superheroes who came to town, but already Season 4 in Fortnite is over and Season 5 is bearing down upon us at a rapid pace.

For weeks we have seen hints of what is to come, the crack in the sky the rocket created seems to have opened some kind of time rift and that has brought in some strange items while removing others. But what does it all mean we hear you ask, well we still don’t know all the details of what Season 5 will bring, but we have a pretty good idea.

When Can I Play Fortnite Season 5?

Season 5 is available right now and servers seem to be fairly stable, however this could change when more people head home at the end of the day, so don’t be surprised if there are a few tech issues at some point today.

The season will run until September 25th, giving you plenty of time to earn those sweet new skins.

Fortnite Season 5 Battle Pass Redline Drift Huntress skins cosmetics
The new Redline, Drift, and Huntress costmetics.

How Much is the Season 5 Battle Pass?

As always you will still be able to enjoy the classic Fortnite experience without having to pay a penny, and you will also get to experience more than a few changes coming with Season 5, such as the map changes.

However to get the full seasonal experience you will need to drop some cash on the Battle Pass. Once again the Battle Pass will set you back 950 V-Bucks, which is around around £8 or $ 10USD in real money.

Or you can get the Battle Pass and instantly unlock the first 25 tiers for 2800 V-Bucks.

What does the Fortnite Battle Pass give me?

Fortnite‘s Season 5 Battle Pass is pretty similar to the previous ones we have seen. They offer access to exclusive cosmetics and skins, that are often only available to battle pass owners. Some will be unlocked as soon as you buy the pass, others will have to be earned through completing challenges and quests tied to the Battle Pass. There’s also a ton of XP boosts and V-Bucks to be earned by unlocking the 100 tiers.

As soon as you purchase the Battle Pass you will get the Drift and Huntress skins. The latter is a viking shield maiden, while initially the former just looks like a fairly standard guy. However he has alternate styles that can be unlocked which make him a lot cooler.

Fortnite Season 5 Battle Pass Sledgehammer Rook Sun Strider skins cosmetics
The new Sledgehammer, Rook, and Sun Strider cosmetics.

As you progress through the tiers you’ll unlock other cosmetics such as Redline, a female biker, Sun Strider, a lifeguard skin, Sledgehammer, which bears a striking resemblance to Blackbeard from Rainbow Six Siege, and Rook, which seems to be some kind of secret service agent style skin.

Finally if you hit tier 100 you will get your hands on Ragnarok, an upgradeable skin that really is the best of this season so far. It will take a lot to earn this, or you can just buy tires with V-Bucks if you have a load of spare cash, but the reward is pretty sweet.

Finally you’ll also have access to the weekly challenges. This time three of them will be available to those without Battle Passes, while another four will be Battle Pass exclusive.

What is Season 5’s theme?

Unlike Season 4 where everything was clearly related to superheroes in some way, Season 5 seems a little more disjointed. In fairness, this makes sense with the Worlds Collide theme.

Many of the skins are based around historical times, whereas a lot of other cosmetics seem to be based around the beach, perhaps because of the new desert biome on the map. Seeing Vikings next to a lifeguard with an inflatable unicorn back bling certainly wasn’t what we were expecting, but we are not complaining!

Having a general theme such as Worlds Collide means that Epic can do literally anything and it would make sense here, so expect the rest of the season to throw up a lot of surprises and things we could never even imagine.

What changes has Season 5 Brought With it?

A new season means a big old patch, and with it comes a lot of gameplay changes. The big new addition is the All-Terrain Kart, a four-person vehicle that can transport your entire squad around the map. It functions just like the two-person cart, but is just a little bigger and its roof acts as a bounce pad, which is sure to lead to some amazing stunts once people learn how to use it.

The map has also seen some pretty big changes. A new desert biome has been added to the south east corner of the map, destroying the Moisty Mire. This area has been totally overhauled, with some massive hills and mountains added and even some dinosaurs to scare the living daylight out of you when you round a corner to see one.

Fortnite Season 5 map Paradise Palms
Let's go to Paradise Palms and see some dinosaurs.

This has also resulted in the prison in this corner of the map disappearing, being replaced with a new area called Paradise Palms, which certainly seems to be more interesting than the prison ever was. Elsewhere, Anarchy Acres has also been replaced — this time with a golf course known as Lazy Links. Oh, and Dusty Divot is slowly returning to its former glory as even more trees have sprouted in the crater.

A few smaller changes have tweaked how shotguns work, meaning you can’t fire another shotgun for a short while after firing your original one. Pellet hits are now shown in the reticle and spread is now consistent and not random, which should reduce those infuriating moments where you aim a pump directly at someones head only for every pellet to miss.

The circle has also been tweaked in the later stages to be slightly more random. The Switch version has been given motion controls and the mobile sound indicator is now available on all platforms, but your game sounds will be muted if you use it. Of course there is also a whole host of bug fixes and smaller tweaks that you probably won’t even notice for quite a while.

Fortnite Shotguns
Get ready to learn static spread patterns…

This is just the beginning. With 10 weeks of Fortnite Season 5 content coming our way you can be sure that there will be even more new additions. Expect new cosmetics, challenges, map tweaks and most likely some massive, game-wide events such as the rocket launch we saw just a few weeks back.

These rifts that have opened up could literally result in anything from any time coming into the world of Fortnite, and with the team at Epic Games already showing off how crazy some of their ideas are you can only expect things to get strangers as the season progresses.

Slideshow: Everything You Missed at the American Black Film Festival 2018 Including Future, Kofi, and Coogler

If you were seeking to break into the film industry or you love black movies and television shows, the only place to be on this planet was the 22nd Annual Black Film Festival. Held in Miami, the event was sold out—and for good reason.

ABFF Ventures CEO Jeff Friday created the film festival more than two decades ago as the premier professional development and networking platform for African American filmmakers, artists, and industry influencers. This year, filmmakers, producers, and actors sought to elevate themselves within the industry by gaining essential training through a series of master classes taught by seasoned pros, which included “Becoming A Showrunner;” “Film Financing;” and “Nailing Your Audition.” Others gained the inside track through “Business of Entertainment” seminars sessions that demystified film distribution deals; evaluated television writers’ rooms; and shared how Netflix Original Films seeks to diversify talent in front of and behind the camera, among other topics.

Attendees also gained access to premier entertainment and interviews. For instance, HBO, which has been an ABFF partner for 21 years, sponsored the side-splitting Comedy Wings Competition as well as diverse, powerful slate of indies featured as part of its short film competition. Moreover, filmmakers and film lovers alike packed Miami’s New World Center to view an exclusive interview with ABFF alum and filmmaker of the moment: Black Panther Director Ryan Coogler.

Beyoncé and Jay-Z Continue to Surprise on Joint Album Everything Is Love

Leave it to Beyoncé and Jay-Z to redefine what “pulling a Beyoncé” can be. Last Saturday, the pair headlined London Stadium as part of their joint On the Run II Tour, and at the end of their career-spanning set a message flashed on the screens: “ALBUM OUT NOW.” And there it was, on the home screen of the streaming platform Tidal (in which Jay-Z and Beyoncé have a controlling stake): Everything Is Love, credited to The Carters, an exquisitely produced happy ending to the cheating-heart narrative that unspooled on Beyoncé’s gravity-defying 2016 album Lemonade and Jay-Z’s terse yet personal 2017 release 4:44.

Rumors that this power couple would someday release a joint album have long been grist for pop’s mill, with Jay telling The New York Times last year that he and his wife had been using art “almost like a therapy session.” Everything was finished just a few hours before its splashy release, although its meticulous craft suggests otherwise. (“[Beyoncé and Jay-Z] don’t have rules,” producer Andre Lyon, who worked on the album as part of the production duo Cool & Dre, told Rolling Stone. “No one can get away with the things they do—and when I say get away with, I mean pull off.”) The album recalls other blockbuster duets in R&B and hip-hop—particularly Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell’s besotted soul sides, as well as Method Man and Mary J. Blige’s hip-hop-minded update of that pair’s 1968 smash “You’re All I Need to Get By”—as it plays with public perceptions of the duo’s relationship. Yet it incorporates too many of-the-moment elements to feel anything but timely: There are ad-libs from the Atlanta rap upstarts Migos, beats that take cues from the minimalist hip-hop subgenre trap, lyrical rebukes to the NFL and the Grammys, and cryptic references to other boldfaced names.

Everything opens with “Summer,” a lush ballad that sounds tailor-made for song-of-the-summer status. It also sets the thematic, if not musical, tone for the rest of the album: Beyoncé and Jay have weathered the storms of previous years and are ready to get back to the drunk-in-love business of beachside fun, shared plans, and knocking the rest of the world on their heels with their individual and combined success.

Over the course of Everything’s nine songs, the duo acknowledge bumps—subpoena-brandishing investigators, streaming services who don’t share the wealth, shady friends—while remaining resilient and focused, both on each other and on their art. Beyoncé’s swagger-filled rapping is as dead-serious as it is delightful: Her half-sung, half-rapped hook on “713” flaunts her mighty pipes and streetwise skills while throwing in some vocal processing that echoes the ’90s G-funk era; her demands for “respeck on my check” on “Apes–t” reframe the wage-gap issue in a radio-ready way; and her admonition of Spotify on the flinty, Pharrell-assisted “Nice” ends with a quote from the 1998 cult flick Half-Baked that’s as unprintable as it is cheer-inducing. Jay’s boasts are also in ample supply as he shouts out sellout crowds and big-ticket brands, although in a continuation of the openness he exhibited on 4:44, he pulls back the curtain on the couple’s origin story on “713” while also noting that life for black men in America is only made easier by black women.

Everything Is Love closes with “Black Effect” and “Lovehappy,” both of which return to the string-laden classic-soul sonics of the album’s opeer. The former examines America’s complex racial politics before making a simple declaration: “The Chitlin’ Circuit is stopped/ Now we in stadiums,” Jay declares, calling back to the path black musicians had to take during the era of racial segregation while flicking at how he and his wife have reached music’s highest echelons not just in their home country, but around the world. “Lovehappy,” a gorgeously plush ballad with sparkling synths and trilling strings, ends things on a hopeful note, the couples’ back-and-forth banter sounding like it was taken from the therapy sessions Jay mentioned (“Love is deeper than your pain and I believe you can change,” Beyoncé growls at one point) before bubbling over into a sighing “happy in love.”

Nearly two decades after their first meeting (the encounter Jay describes in “713” happened in 2000), Beyoncé and Jay-Z have ascended to celebrity’s highest heights by playing it close to the vest. They’re the masters of indulging the gossip-industrial complex’s hunger for “the real story” while also holding on tight to whatever the actual story might be. Everything Is Love’s melding of the personal and the imperial, the old-school and the next-wave, and the soulful and the stubborn give away the real story: Years later, The Carters still inspire each other to push harder and aim higher as they salute their love of each other, and of their art.

Nas Isn’t Upset with Jay-Z for Dropping ‘Everything Is Love’ the Day After His Album, Happy for ‘Black Excellence’

Jay-Z and Beyonce dropping their surprise album the day after Nas released his may have been shade on Jay’s part, but Nas sources say it’s all love on his.

via TMZ:

Sources close to Nas tell us the Queensbridge rapper isn’t fuming about “Everything Is Love” being released on Saturday, and doesn’t think the Carters will steal any thunder from his new album, “Nasir.” We’re told Nas fully appreciates the fact Jay and Bey are hip-hop royalty at this point, and actually really likes their new record.

If you don’t know, and you should, Nas and Jay had a huge feud going in the late ’90s and early 2000s. They went at each other in songs and interviews for years before burying the whole thing in 2005.

They’ve been friends ever since, and we’re told Nas is more interested in “black excellence” these days … rather than drama.

That’s a relief. We can’t handle any more rap feuds at this moment.

New Grouchy, Grumpy 'The Grinch' Trailer; Here's Everything We Know

Many people have fond memories of hearing Boris Karloff voice Dr. Seuss' classic character The Grinch in the animated television show How the Grinch Stole Christmas, directed by Chuck Jones. Here’s everything AT&T now owns, apart from your soul

AT&T Time Warner merger

Earlier this week, a judge decided the fate of the AT&T Time Warner deal, and the result was a big thumbs-up in the general direction of capitalism. The $ 85 billion deal has closed, Time Warner has officially been assimilated into AT&T (and renamed WarnerMedia), and there’s almost zero chance that anything will stop it now.

With the closing of the deal, AT&T is now far more than just a telecoms company. It owns dozens of brands, as well as the rights to some of the most popular shows on TV. It has dozens of cable channels, and if the worst fears about programming disputes play out, AT&T could black those channels out from your pay TV provider during a dispute. In no particular order, here’s some of the big brands AT&T now owns.

‘He Had Everything.’ Anthony Bourdain’s Mother Says She Never Thought He Would Commit Suicide

Anthony Bourdain’s mother has expressed shock and sadness over the death of her son in an interview with the New York Times.

“He is absolutely the last person in the world I would have ever dreamed would do something like this,” Gladys Bourdain, who was an editor at the Times for years, told the newspaper.

Bourdain, the renowned chef and author whose storytelling and traveling influenced others and embraced different cultures, died this week in an apparent suicide. He was 61 years old.

“He had everything,” his mother told the Times. “Success beyond his wildest dreams. Money beyond his wildest dreams.”

Gladys Bourdain told the Times that Eric Ripert, a French chef and close friend of her son’s, told her that Bourdain “had been in a dark mood these past couple of days.”

Bourdain’s death shocked and saddened the world this week as fans and friends of his expressed the impact he had on their lives and the influential role he had in the restaurant industry. Restaurant owners and chefs who he visited in his variety of TV shows point to him as a reason for their growing success, and fans took to social media to express how he used his platform to convey empathy and understanding.

Bourdain’s suicide followed that of Kate Spade, an influential fashion designer who had died in an apparent suicide at age 55, and came at a time when the rates of suicide were on the rise across the U.S. Mental health professionals advised people to reach out and support friends or loved ones who may be struggling, and learn to identify warning signs like depression or changes in behavior, among other behaviors.

The deaths of two influential figures in their respective fields have also provoked conversations about how successful people are not immune depression, mental health issues or suicide. TIME’s Belinda Luscombe detailed this in a piece, where she examined the deaths of Bourdain and Kate Spade, the influential fashion designer who had died by an apparent suicide days earlier. “Many lives are not as they appear. Happiness is not the end result of a sum of accomplishments,” Luscombe writes. “The person whose wealth/wardrobe/job/talent you wish you had has his or her own struggles, and they could at least equal our own.”

If you or someone you know may be contemplating suicide, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255.

Fans have been wanting a new Spawn movie for more than 20 years now. Five years after the Gareth Edwards-helmed reboot of Godzilla, the sequel will finally arrive in theaters, just slightly later than we originally expected. Everything Coming to Netflix in June 2018

Summer is finally here, but June gloom may have you spending more time inside than in the sun. But there’s a silver lining — plenty of time to binge the latest Netflix releases.

A slew of great film and television series will be heading to the streaming service next month, including Netflix originals like GLOW Season 2 and the Sense8 Series Finale. The former was a huge hit for the platform last year, so anticipation is high for the followup. And Sense8‘s cult fan following was so upset over the series’ cancellation that Netflix produced a giant finale episode to bring closure to the story.

Luke Skywalker-Last Jedi
Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker in 'The Last Jedi'

The streaming service is also bringing us Star Wars: The Last Jedi only six months after it first arrived in theaters. The movie was highly polarizing for fans of the space franchise, so watch it when it hits Netflix on June 26 to decide which side of the debate you fall on when it comes to Luke Skywalker’s fate.

Thor Ragnarok trailer
Chris Hemsworth in 'Thor: Ragnarok'

When God closes a door, he opens a window. Similarly, when Netflix gets rid of a great Marvel movie, it starts offering another one in its place. While June will see the loss of Captain America: Civil War on the streaming service, it will gain 2017’s Thor: RagnarokWhile the film includes all of our favorite Asgardians, including Thor and Loki teaming up to defeat their sister Hela (Cate Blanchett), it also provides a lot of laughs as arguably the funniest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Thor: Ragnarok comes to Netflix on June 5.

The Fab 5 in 'Queer Eye'
The Fab 5 in 'Queer Eye'

When Netflix decided to reboot Queer Eye for the Straight Guy earlier this year, no one expected it to be such a huge hit. But people were instantly obsessed with the new Fab Five, so fans were flipping to find out that they don’t have to wait an entire year for Season 2. Just four months after Queer Eye debuted on the streaming service, we’re getting the second round of tearjerking makeovers and life-changing lessons from Jonathan, Antoni, Karamo, Tan, and Bobby. If it’s anything like Season 1, you’ll definitely want to tune in, but have tissues nearby! For every moment of laughter the boys bring, there are just as many heartwarming and emotional moments that will give you all the feels. Queer Eye returns to Netflix on June 15.

Everything you need to set up a nursing station before your baby comes

Kelly Wilbanks

posted in Products

I was four days postpartum and felt abandoned. Yes, “abandoned.” At least that’s how my hormone-induced emotional low left me feeling as I sat in the middle of my bed, a mere 15 feet from my showering husband and overly helpful mother-in-law in the kitchen. I felt alone.

I sat precariously on a hemorrhoid pillow, holding my barely sleeping infant, and felt my blood sugar crashing. I didn’t want to yell to my family in fear of waking my baby, but I couldn’t reach my water. I needed food like a starving captive and I felt trapped. I was in pain and moving an inch sent shockwaves through my throbbing lady parts. The tears fell fast and furious as I sat helpless on a donut pillow until my mother-in-law found me.

That was six years and three children ago. I’ve learned some things since then that helped me immensely with babies number two and three. Having a comfortable nursing station set up with everything you need within reach is essential.

Nursing station essentials

1. A comfortable chair: Have a designated nursing chair that fits your body size and type. The most comfortable chair in our house is my husband’s rocking recliner. The only problem is it’s built for a 6′ 3″ man and not someone a foot shorter than that. I liked being able to recline in his chair, but I don’t like that my feet don’t touch the floor.

Given that you’ll be using this chair daily it’s worth spending a little money finding something that fits you. You’ll appreciate being able to stand easily when you are stiff and sore after laboring. You’ll also want to be able to rock and snag a nap with your sleeping baby at times. I like that this one from Angel Line is wide and has an easy-pull lever on the side. (Amazon, $ 299.37)

2. Support pillows: Everyone is aware of the Boppy pillow and I’ve loved mine. It was great not only for nursing, but later on for supporting my daughter when we did tummy time (when also I took a million pictures of her). It was also helpful when my older children were holding their new baby sister.

I’ve tried the My Brest Friend pillow and the Boppy. I didn’t like having to snap the Brest Friend pillow around my waist. I mistakenly thought that feature meant I could carry my daughter around with me, but it explicitly states on the packaging not to do that. So, for me the Boppy has remained a nursing station staple. (Amazon, $ 39.99)boppy-forest-print

3. Baby blankets: I gave burp rags a chance, but found I just reached for the closest thing available — often a baby blanket, and sometimes even the one my child is in. They do the job. I love the Aden + Anais brand because they’re breathable, and great for swaddling. They come in beautiful prints too. (Amazon, $ 34.95) aden+anias-blanket

4. Shower caddy: Okay, this may sound a bit weird, but I like their size, shape, and portability. You could use a diaper bag, a cleaning caddy from the Dollar Store or even just a basket to keep your nursing supplies together. But whatever you use, keep it stocked with these items: water bottle, wipes, granola bars (or other easily eaten nonperishable items), binkies, nipple pads, nipple cream (coconut oil works great), and nipple shields, if you need them. The fact that it’s portable makes it easy to take to a second location, like the nursery you spent so much time perfecting.

I liked this one from mDesign because it doesn’t look like your typical shower caddy. It has firm walls, which I prefer to a bag or something that collapses when it’s less full. You’ll want to be able to easily see what you have in there. I like just having one caddy to restock. It’s easier to keep track of what you need. This one looks like it can hold all your essentials, and depending on what you need, maybe some supplies for your baby too. (Amazon, $ 15.99)

5. A charging station: You’ll want your phone near you. Even if it’s just to capture a picture of your baby in various stages of sleep. Or maybe you want to catalogue your nursing statistics on the latest app. You’ll be thankful to have a spot to plug in your phone. Keep the remote handy too. I usually loved keeping the distractions to a minimum at times when I nursed my babies. But other times I just wanted to zone out with another episode of The Office.

This one allows you to charge multiple devices at once and includes a 4-pack of charging connectors. I like that there is a spot for my Fitbit and I could prop my phone, Kindle, or tablet up if needed. The bamboo looks sturdy too so it won’t get unbalanced easily. (Amazon, $ 25.99)

These are my essentials. As your body (and your baby’s!) adjusts to nursing, you’ll soon be able to nurse anywhere. But be kind to yourself those first few weeks. You’ll be glad you did.

What are your nursing station essentials?

Everything you wanted to know about Taiwan

Many people head to Asia when backpacking, the hot climate, and rich cultural history attract thousands every year. A brief history

Taiwan is officially called the Republic of China, it neighbors China, Japan, and the Philippines. It is the most densely populated nation that doesn’t belong to the United Nations. Taiwan was ruled by the ancient Chinese Qing dynasty before they ceded the country to Japan in 1895. After World War II and the Japanese surrender to the Allies, Taiwan was once again controlled by China. Taiwan now governs itself, and China has no control over them, despite their protestations saying otherwise. Alright, enough history, where should you visit?

Like most countries, it is always worth swinging by their capital city to get a feel for the culture and vibrancy of the nation. If you visit the city, you must venture out at night to discover the fabulous night markets. These markets offer many local delicacies, and there is no shortage of the street snacks, so make sure you go with an empty stomach to pack as much in as possible. Take a trip out to Pingxi, an hour from the city, and let off a sky lantern. The area is well-known for its Sky Lantern festival in February or March. If you feel like a walk, try hiking Elephant Mountain. Many trails are well marked, and the scenery is unbelievably green, once at the top of the mountain you can take in the whole city. Bring a camera!

Yangmingshan National Park

The national park is one of Taiwan’s greatest attractions and contains hot springs and geysers as well as volcanic rock. Amazingly, entry to the park is free, but vehicles will incur a parking charge. Paid tours are available for those not comfortable setting off on their own. Travelers enjoy walks to the flower clock and strolling through the cherry blossom or calla lily fields.

The former capital city of Taiwan is full of hidden secrets just waiting to be discovered. Head to the Ten Drum Culture Village to witness the huge drum that was converted from a disused sugar refinery. Locals recommend visiting at night due to the lights they have in place around the instrument. Sticking with the theme of transformation, you must visit the Anping Tree House, in the Anping district. This house has been almost entirely taken over by mother nature, and many people draw comparisons to Angkor Wat in Cambodia. Entrance is less than $ 2, so it really is worth a visit.

Taroko National Park

Visit the Eternal Springs Shrine, built to commemorate those who lost their lives during its construction. The shrine is placed within the Taroko gorge and is a must see if you visit the park, visitors to the park recommend heading up to the bell tower near the shrine to get a good view of the scenery. Following the shrine, visitors must hike the swallow grotto trail, which goes through several tunnels, the name comes from the swallows nesting in the cliff rocks. The short hike has many wonderful views and is a peaceful stroll through the park.

Those were some of the places we recommend you check out during your trip to Taiwan. The value for money is incredible, with many attractions costing just a few dollars apiece, which definitely will not break the bank.

The Best Women’s Suits of 2018: Affordable, Designer, and Everything In Between

best women's suits 2018Which are the best women’s suits of 2018, whether for a stylish interview outfit, a power suit, or some other major career event? (Or, hey: a simple, chic suit often makes a great work outfit all by itself!) We’ve recently updated The Corporette Guide to Interview Suits, but we haven’t talked about the best suits for women in ages (aww, here was one of our first discussions on suiting basics for women!) so I thought we’d do a roundup. (We’ll also be updating our guide to plus size suits, petite suits, tall suits, and more in the coming weeks as well!) Readers, which are your favorite interview suits right now? What do you consider to be your “power suit”?

First, some general tips on what to look for in a great suit:

  • Confidence is the key to interview attire and power dressing. The goal of any interview suit or other suit like this is to let your brain do the talking and let your fashion sense take a back seat — so if you feel best in a pants suit, or flats, go for that. You don’t want to be that “baby giraffe” trying to walk in uncomfortable heels that are too high for you and sitting awkwardly in your interview fussing with your jacket. Really: whatever makes you feel like a polished professional is what’s going to make you the most confident. So take the rest of these tips with a grain of salt, BUT for my $ .02, here are some shopping, styling, and budget tips:
    • If you’re hunting for a budget-friendly interview suit: go for a black skirt suit rather than a pants suit, because pants fit is by far the hardest thing to get right. In my experience a $ 60 skirt suit looks OK but a $ 60 pants suit makes you look like you come from Planet Frump. Furthermore, the skirt suit will go farther — you can wear the pencil skirt as a basic bottom in your wardrobe (but always dryclean all pieces of a suit together!), plus if you have a “dressed up” occasion, a skirt suit is always going to be the more formal option. Another pro for a simple pencil skirt: you completely avoid the issue of what length/type pants to get, which really does feel like we’re in a period of flux — for a while all you could find were ankle pants, even though they were too trendy to wear to most conservative workplaces — now that flared pants and bootcut trousers are coming back I feel like the ankle pants will look outdated pretty quickly. Other trends I’ve seen with suits: jumpsuits! culottes! short suits! You want 1) a pencil skirt + hip length jacket or 2) a fitted sheath dress + hip length jacket — these combos have been in for years and probably will be for years to come. (Here’s our guide to pantyhose, which yes, if you want to be “safe,” you should probably wear for any interview if you’re junior, particularly in more conservative areas — but go back to our first point on confidence/comfort and factor that in.)
    • If you’re shopping online, look for words such as: seasonless wool, stretch wool, tropical wool, gabardine, triacetate. Avoid words like sateen, shimmer, linen. Crepe can be really tricky — sometimes it means a polyester drapey blend for suiting and sometimes it means a bridesmaid’s dress/MOB type thing.
    • If you’re busty: traditional wisdom here is that you want more buttons on your blazer, not fewer. I’m plenty busty and have had some favorite one-button jackets over the years, though, so your mileage may vary here. Depending on trends you can sometimes find suits with as many as four or five buttons. Check out this post for more workwear style tips for busty women.
  • Treasure hunting for a suit (where you MAY or may not find something good): T.J. Maxx, Yoox, ASOS, OFF5TH, and Nordstrom Rack
  • Consider taking your suit to the tailor. Common suiting alterations include shortening sleeves, adjusting the waist. Note that the blazer (specifically the shoulder/arms) are the hardest part to tailor, so focus on that fit when you’re shopping.
  • Please don’t forget to cut your Xs, always dryclean suiting pieces together, and — if you’re wearing the suit somewhere Very Important like an interview, make sure you use the mirror trick.
  • For other tips on buying a basic interview suit (including considerations on colors, care, accessories, layering, and more), please check out The Corporette Guide to Interview Suits. (We’re in the midst of updating our guide to what tops to wear under suits!)

We’ll put a few handy pins at the bottom of this post for you with general prices for suiting alterations and general advice for what to wear on interviews. But first: on to our roundup of the best women’s suits of 2018!

Affordable Suits For Women

All of the suits in this tier are generally under $ 250 for two pieces. Note that the two big risks with a budget option will be frumpiness on one end — and “sexy secretary”/ formality problems on the other. Try to look for a material that drapes well, doesn’t wrinkle, isn’t too seasonal (such as a cotton suit — a tropical wool or triacetate will go farther) — and be wary of trendy cuts like collarless jackets, huge slits in your skirt, cropped pants, and more.

Pictured above: skirt suit / pants suit / skirt suit / pants suit / skirt suit

  • Anne Klein (separates) – Nordstrom has a few Anne Klein suits; Macy’s also carries them. They also have an exclusive line at Macy’s called “Anne Klein Executive,” but note that those are full suit sets, not separates. Pictured above: pantsuit and a skirt set from the Executive line.
  • Banana Republic Factory – Like J.Crew Factory, BR’s outlet sector has a lot of good finds for work, particularly on the more affordable, classic side of things. Note that because these pieces may be produced just for the Factory Store it may mean that there are differences in fit and quality — so keep that in mind when ordering.
  • Calvin Klein (separates) – It’s next to impossible to find a good link to one online, but Calvin Klein suiting separates are also sold at Macy’s and are pretty reliable; here’s a link to the classic two-button blazer. (Amazon also has a ton of them, many of them eligible for Prime Wardrobe (here’s Kate’s recent review of Prime Wardrobe).
  • Chadwicks – I have no experience personally with these suits, but some of the blazers are under $ 20 (!) and the brand offers regular, petite, plus, and tall sizes — and they have suiting separates.
  • Kasper (separates) and Tahari (separates) – Kasper used to specialize in full suit sets, but in recent years they’ve had a line of separates for sale, which is great for people who want, say, a petite-sized blazer but a regular-sized skirt. I haven’t tried them on for quality or fit, though. (Pictured at top: Tahari.)
  • Kasper / Tahari / Le Suit (not sold as separates) – You can find huge deals on these brands at places like TJ Maxx, Kohl’s, Macy’s, Lord & Taylor, Smart Bargains, and Overstock — but it’s very hard to break the pieces up and wear them as separates, at least in my experience. If you need a skirt suit for under $ 100 all in, though, these brands are the first places I’d look. Note that because these suits are sold as one product (rather than as separates) you usually have to pick a single size — if you’re a 10 on top and 14 on the bottom, for example, this is not going to be the way you want to go. In my experience these suits may trend towards the frumpy side, particularly as pantsuits — in a skirtsuit the fit issues will be less noticeable. (You may also want to check out our guide to suiting alterations!) Pictured above.
  • Express – If you’re a fan of their Editor/Columnist pants, do check out their matching blazers and other suiting options. As always with these brands, watch or fit — but note that Express has been stepping up their workwear game lately, so these may be a great option if you’re looking for an interview suit on a budget. Pictured above.
  • Lands’ End – Particularly if you’re looking for a washable wool blazer in a wider size range (such as tall, petite, plus or cusp sizes), Lands’ End can be a great, affordable option.
  • Loft – Sometimes you can get a basic dark suit here, although I’d be worried about wrinkling and trendiness/formality (compared to other options, like Tahari or Anne Klein)
  • Mango – Mango has really stepped up their office wear line recently, including a ton of pictured on IG
  • Nine West (separates) – I usually think of Nine West as selling “fun” suits in classic cuts (like bright pink ones) but from time to time they have neutral suits. If you see one on the rack in a color you like but are hesitant to try because you think Nine West only sells affordable shoes, think again… Nice options in stock right now: two-button stretch and a clasp-front blazer.
  • NY & Co. – I’d be wary of the fabric and fit here, so it’s hard to recommend them online — but if you have a store near you, these are some of the most budget-friendly suits you can get. They have a line called “all-season stretch” that would be the place I’d start. Here’s a nice option.
  • White House | Black Market – Their suits tend to be more trendy than classic, but they do have a line of seasonless suiting (and in plus sizes as well!).
  • Bonus notes: Brands that regularly make “fun” suits that may occasionally have neutral suits include ASOS, H&MNine West, Topshop (also at Nordstrom), Zara. Also, a sad trombone for The Limited, which used to be one of our favorites in this space — the company went bankrupt and was sold, and while they do have inventory right now it’s mostly non-suiting pieces — and judging by the number of “everything for $ 11!” sales we’ve seen, they’re still working out kinks in sizing, fit and quality. Still, keep an eye on them — we’re rooting for them to come back!

Mid-Range Suits For Women

These suits are reliably under $ 500 for two pieces — but they’re going to be a bit higher quality than more affordable suiting options in the first tier.

Pictured: skirt / navy / black / gray / navy

  • Ann Taylor – Ann Taylor currently has a lot of their tropical wool blend in stock, a “lightweight wool blend and is good for any season” — they also sell a polyester blend “seasonless stretch” suiting fabric, as well as (occasionally, online only usually). Watch for sales (historically they’ve had them early June), but note that it’s hard to go wrong with Ann Taylor for your first major suit. Pictured.
  • Antonio Melani – Dillards’ line of workwear is a solid option if you like the styles or if you can find them in the store.
  • Austen Reed – This British brand has brought back their line of suits for women — I believe they were recently sold, though, so you may want to consider this a “new” brand in terms of size, fit, and quality.
  • Banana Republic – I’ve really been liking a lot of BR suits lately, and it’s great that they’ve got a ton of machine washable suits — they can be very difficult to find! Here’s a nice basic option.
  • Brooks Brothers Red Fleece – Red Fleece, Brooks Brothers’ “little sister” line, often has great options for basic wool suiting and other workwear staples — sometimes with a cheeky twist; sometimes not. Pictured.
  • Boden – I normally think of Boden for fun suits, but they do have some more traditional options as well, such as this one. (Don’t forget to check out our recent roundup of how to build a work wardrobe at Boden!)
  • J.Crew – Distressingly, J.Crew’s suits section now has a ton of dresses and very few suits. (In fact, their Super 120s suiting seems to be on the way out entirely, but you can still find a few pieces in the sale section.) Their stretch wool selection seems to be the most basic you can get, but note that at the moment they’re down to lucky sizes as well. Pictured.
  • Of Mercer – This workwear indie has a solid section of suiting section with blazers topping out around $ 250. Pictured.
  • Talbots has been gaining in reader popularity over the years — note that if you’re hard to fit, they often carry multiple suit separate options in regular sizes (often up to 18 or 20), tall, petite, plus sizes, and (holy grail of rareness here), plus size petites. Do check out their line of seasonless wool suiting (pictured). (Don’t forget to check out our recent roundup of how to build a work wardrobe at Talbots!)

Investment Suits For Women

I also call this category “fancy affordable” — they’re expensive, but generally worth it if you wear a suit a lot. For many women this is going to be the first “splurge” suit — two pieces will cost you more than $ 500, but less than $ 1000.

Pictured above: pant / skirt / pant / skirt / pant

  • Brooks Brothers – They don’t seem to have anything terribly classic in stock online at the moment, but this brand is obviously a stalwart for women’s suiting.
  • Elie Tahari – This is the parent brand to everyone’s starter suit, Tahari – the prices are much steeper but so is the quality and the cut. They have a lot of stores in malls, but you can also find the brand at Nordstrom, Bloomingdale’s, and Saks.
  • The Fold London – I mostly think of this brand for their gorgeous origami-like top, but they make a lot of neutral suiting and other tailored pieces, so if you’re looking for something different (or happen to be in London), keep the brand in mind.
  • Hobbs – This British brand has a few locations stateside, and carries a lot of gorgeous workwear, including some nice basic suits. Note that Bloomingdale’s also carries the brand. (Another general note if you’re looking for washable clothes — many, many of Hobbs’s dresses and suiting separates are washable.)
  • Hugo Boss – My admiration for this brand has only grown the more I’ve done this blog — everything they do is beautiful quality, extremely classic and stylish. They have stand alone stores, but you can also find that at Nordstrom and Bloomingdale’s.
  • Lafayette 148 New York – If you’ve got curves or are in need of cusp sizes (16, occasionally even 18), take a look at Lafayette 148 New York — the quality is lovely but the cuts are much more forgiving. Their suiting pants are incredibly highly rated at Nordstrom, as well. You can also find the brand often on deep discount at Last Call and OFF5TH.
  • LK Bennett – This British brand has a ton of tweed suits and feminine suiting options, but they also carry neutrals — if your goal in your interview is to feel like a super confident Kate Middleton, this is where I’d go.
  • MM.LaFleur – This brand nearly went in the above tier, but two pieces would be around $ 600, so technically it’s in this one — particularly since the odds are slim for finding MM LaFleur’s pieces on sale (although you may be able to find them used for less money). The independent maker of the reader-favorite jardigan as well as some of our favorite sheath dresses just launched a suiting section. Pictured.
  • Reiss – This British brand is always droolworthy for me — they specialize in classic takes on modern styles. Note that their fits can be a bit body conscious. Note that Bloomingdale’s also carries the brand; also that the sale/outlet section on their site has some amazing deals. Here are two nice options (pictured).
  • Ted Baker – Another British brand that is fabulous if you want a slightly feminine take on a basic suit. They have a lot of mall stores as well, but you can also find the brand at Nordstrom.
  • Theory – The classic — but be warned, if you have curves you may have to size up here. Their traditional blazer is still available, but you may also want to look at the “clean” blazer or the “modern” blazer. If you’re confused about the differences between the Theory fabrics or the cut of different jackets or pants, take a look at this post. Note that you can also find the brand at a lot of spots, including Nordstrom, Bloomingdale’s, and Saks. Pictured.
  • Sportmax – This brand is hard to find online, but if you happen to see a store, do pop in — the fabrics and cuts are amazing, and a suit should run you less than $ 1000. (The brand is owned by the same company that owns Max Mara.)
  • Fun, trendy brands that might have a suitable interview suit: Rebecca Taylor, Tibi, Trina Turk

Designer Suits for Women

Pictured: DolceMax Mara / Burberry / Akris / Escada

All of these brands are classics for designer workwear — when you win the lottery (or, hey, make partner after a ton of hard work!), stop here first. (I’d also call this “corner office chic”!) Brands in this tier who might have a classic, simple suit: Altuzarra, Akris, Armani, Dolce & GabbanaEscadaJosephMax Mara, Michael Kors, The Row, Saint LaurentSt. John, Keep an eye on designer stores for newer brands with designer suits, such as Farfetch, Matches, My Theresa, Net a Porter (as well as sister site The Outnet) as well as the upscale department stores like Barneys, Neiman Marcus, and Saks.

(Stay tuned for an update to Part II where we look at the best suiting brands for plus size suits, petites, and tall women!)

Ladies, what are your favorite suiting brands for basic, classic interview suits? For those of you who’ve bought suits for women across the different price ranges, what differences have you noticed in quality? What pieces are the most worthy to stalk at sales and on eBay?

Everything you wanted to know about Singapore

Located in Southeast Asia, the island city-state of Singapore is an incredible destination to add to your travel bucket list. Packed full of religious landmarks, vast shopping malls and modern gardens, there is so much to appreciate in this beautiful corner of the world. Plus, with its tropical climate, you never need to worry about getting a chill. Doesn’t it sound like a paradise? If this hasn’t convinced you, just read on – there’s so much more for you to discover. Here is everything you’ve ever wanted to know about visiting Singapore.

A little insight

While Singapore may be relatively small, it packs a pretty big punch. It became independent from Malaysia in 1965, and those in charge have since worked hard to establish the area as a multicultural financial hub. They don’t play around – it’s illegal to chew gum or spit in public – but the sun, sights and Singaporeans more than make up for a couple of head-scratching regulations.

Let’s go to the mall

Singapore might be a long way to go to do some shopping, but if you’re in the area, then it’s worth taking a look in some of their malls. Shopping is an increasingly fundamental part of the city-state’s culture, and there are malls everywhere now. The Great Singapore Sale that happens annually is an incredible tourist attraction and worth attending if you’re there at the right time of year.

Get a taste

Singapore has become a hub of cultural delicacies, and not just their own. The mainland boasts fine dining experiences that easily rival its western counterparts, although you might be on the lookout for something a little more affordable. If that’s the case, Hawker centers are the place to go. They offer inexpensive food that embodies the fusion style that Singapore is known for, and are pretty common throughout the city. Food tours are also a regular occurrence out on the streets of Singapore, and they offer the perfect opportunity to challenge your taste buds and sample the local flavor without reservation.

City in a garden

A visit to Singapore isn’t complete without a visit to one of their many glorious gardens. It’s hard to miss them – the area is deeply rooted in nature. The National Orchid Garden is a particular highlight, where you can experience a scented tour of Singapore’s rich history, as well as the Gardens by the Bay. Covering an area of 101 hectares, these waterfront gardens offer a great selection of activities and attractions for everyone, not all of which involve flowers. There are light displays, art installations and even a children’s water park. If you do wish to stare at flowers, however, you can do a lot of that too.

Out for the night

Singapore isn’t generally considered a cheap place to visit, and it’s best to ensure you’ve got enough money tucked away before you make the trip. If you’re looking to have a drink or two in the evening, there are some amazing places for you to venture to, but know now that it might cost you. Drinks in Singapore tend to be more expensive, but a visit to somewhere like Clarke Quay will quickly help you to forget that. Cocktail bars can be found all over the city, and they all put their own little twist on some classic flavors.

If you’re interested in visiting Singapore, don’t let anything hold you back. The area has come into its own so much in the last few decades and has a lot to offer, even if you might have to flash the cash a little.

Here, she gives a little insight into wedding nail art trends and her advice for brides who want big day manis with a side of Matisse.

The French manicure is on its way out.

At least, it is in New York City, says Kandalec. Instead, women most frequently asked for design like thin lines of glitter, glitter ombré, and crescent slivers. Just as popular? A straight wash of sheer pink or peach—looks like your favorite neutral is safe for another season.

Glitter is on the rise.

“We see a full range of classic to sparkly, but there’s definitely a lot of glitter going on during wedding season!” reveals Kandalec. Not sure what type of glitter to ask for? Look to your engagement ring for the perfect sparkly shade, she suggests. “A bride will always lean towards milky whites, sheer pinks, and pale blush pinks, but I always suggest a bit of sparkle in the same color as her engagement ring.” A lilac base, she adds, is also up and coming.

Nail art won’t overpower the rest of your look.

So you can rest assured. For brides who want to keep things subtle, Kandalec designed Luxe 03 (solid peach base with two squiggly lines) and Graphic 01 (light pink base with a skinny asymmetrical curve). “I designed Luxe 03 to be more than a solid nail but not overpowering,” she says. “Graphic 01 is so minimal—it provides asymmetrical visual interest that’s more than just an angled stripe.”

Classic brides can get in on the fun, too.

Just because you don’t describe yourself as modern doesn’t mean nail art isn’t for you. Kandalec created the “Classic” range with this specific woman in mind—and recommends she start with Classic 01, which is created with opal foil. “It adds just the right amount of glamour to your nails to still be considered classic,” she adds. “Plus, it’ll softly reflect whatever color you’re wearing, making it the perfect chameleon shade.”

Nail art can be tailored around any nail length—but aim to grow them out.

“All lengths can be beautiful, but having some length for your wedding nails makes them more elegant for the formal occasion,” she continues. “Also, I love an almond shape—it’s more timeless than square!”

Do this to make your nail art last through the honeymoon.

Get gel, says Kandalec. “Since gel lasts two to three weeks, it’s definitely best to have it for the honeymoon. That way you can focus more on sipping piña coladas by the pool, rather than filing your nails by the pool!”

Everything you need to know about Target’s car seat trade-in

Maggie Downs

posted in Life

I want to hit “pause” on my almost-4-year-old son for many reasons. I just love the stage where he is right now, so cuddly and funny and jokey. I already look back on his baby photos and wonder what happened to that little guy. And, oh my goodness, how can it be time to upgrade his car seat to a booster already?

Lately I’ve been researching boosters and wincing at the prices, wondering how I’m going to wedge a new expense in the family budget.

Almost as if by magic, I found this exciting news from Target: In honor of Earth month, Target stores across the country are holding a car seat trade-in event. They’re helping folks recycle their old car seats while saving money on the necessary new ones. This sounded like the perfect way to get rid of the old, faded infant seat that has been gathering dust in the garage.

Why is it important to recycle your car seat? If you have anything older than six years, it’s probably expired or might not meet current regulations. A lot of car seats can’t be recycled through curbside programs. And car seats that have been in accidents should be replaced immediately. But you don’t want them going to a landfill, right?

An infant car seat that is recycled in the Target trade-in program

Here’s what you have to do:

Between April 22 and May 5, bring any unwanted car seat to your local Target. It can be any car seat — even if it’s 15 years old, even if you didn’t buy it from Target, even if you bought it from a sketchy guy named Chet on Craigslist. (Um, especially if you bought it from a sketchy guy named Chet on Craigslist.)

• Receive a coupon for 20-percent off a new car seat, booster seat, car seat base, travel system, or stroller. This is good for any in store or online purchases. (I’ve scoured the terms and conditions, and I didn’t see any off-limit brands. The sky’s the limit!)

• When you go to the store, there should be a big drop-off box in the customer service area, and a Target employee will will give you a coupon in exchange for your car seat.

(Note: The first Target I visited this morning said they were participating in the program, but they hadn’t received their coupons yet. I immediately went to another store, and they had the coupons. So maybe call ahead first just to be sure.)

A cardboard box at Target for the car seat drop-off event.

• You will receive one coupon per seat dropped off.

DEADLINE: The coupon is eligible through May 19, 2018.

The old car seats are recycled through Waste Management and are used to create new grocery carts, plastic buckets, and construction materials. Target has a little bit more info on that, if you’re interested. It’s a pretty big deal. Since launching the program in 2016, Target has recycled more than 176,000 car seats!

This is a win-win-win for me. Because of this program, I can get rid of the old infant seat that cluttering my garage, I know it’ll be used for something instead of sitting in a garbage heap, and the discount takes away some of the sting in buying a new product.

So I guess my son is allowed to grow up just a little more. And then I’ll hit “pause.”

Will you recycle your old car seat?

Everything You Need to Know About the 2018 World Cup

Miss the Olympics? Well, another major, international, quadrennial sporting event is not too far off: On June 14, the 2018 men’s FIFA World Cup kicks off in Russia — and the competition is expected to be fierce.

The international soccer competition takes place every four years, with fan favorites like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo set to compete on their country’s behalf. But for the first time in 32 years, the U.S. will not compete in the World Cup after the men’s national team failed to qualify late last year.

Here’s what to know before players take on soccer’s biggest stage for the month-long competition.

Where and when is the 2018 World Cup?

A man takes a photo of a statue of Zabivaka, the official mascot for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, in Manezhnaya square in downtown Moscow on April 2, 2018. MLADEN ANTONOV/AFP/Getty Images

The 2018 FIFA World Cup will take place at cities in Russia from June 14 through July 15. Teams will compete at 12 stadiums in 11 different cities, including Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Sochi, Nizhny Novgorod and Rostov-on-Don, among others.

The opening match, semi-final and final World Cup games will be played at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, FIFA announced last year. That stadium can hold around 80,000 spectators.

The final match for the 2018 World Cup is expected to kick off Sunday, July 15.

What are the teams to watch?

Heading into the 2018 World Cup, Germany, Brazil, Belgium and Portugal were among the highest-ranked teams by FIFA in April. Germany returns with hopes of defending its 2014 title, and Portugal’s squad, led by star Cristiano Ronaldo, are hoping to improve on their Euro 2016 win.

France, Italy, Argentina and Spain are also teams to watch heading into the 2018 World Cup.

As with any major sporting event, there’s a chance for a Cinderella story. Iceland will be competing in its first-ever World Cup after its stunning Euro 2016 run, and Panama will make its first appearance as well. Notably, Peru will return to the World Cup for the first time in 36 years.

Why isn’t the U.S. competing in the 2018 World Cup?

Belgium v USA - FIFA 2014 World Cup - Round of 16

For the first time since 1986, the U.S. men’s national team won’t compete in the World Cup. The team lost 2-1 in the final qualifying round against Trinidad and Tobago in October 2017.

But the loss wasn’t the only thing that kept the U.S. out of the 2018 World Cup. Wins from Panama and Honduras in their qualifying matches over Costa Rica and Mexico, respectively, secured the U.S.’s missed shot. And U.S. losses against other teams in the CONCACAF (Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football) did not bode well for the team’s chances.

Soccer in the U.S. has “been set back by several years” as a result, said Jurgen Klinsmann, who was the team’s coach until November 2016 when he was ousted after its lackluster start, according to ESPN. “That was a huge disappointment.”

The lack of qualification comes after an exciting U.S. run in the 2014 World Cup. In fact, goalkeeper Tim Howard captured headlines when he made a stunning and record-breaking 16 saves against Belgium in the Round of 16. The U.S. went on to lose to Belgium, but Howard was named FIFA’s Man of the Match and excited fans went as far to change Wikipedia’s entry for the U.S. Secretary of Defense to feature Howard.

(Disappointed U.S. fans should remember 2016, when the women’s national team won the World Cup.)

Why is Russia hosting the 2018 World Cup?

Russian Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko giv

FIFA selected Russia for its 2018 host country as part of a campaign to spread the World Cup to new countries. In 2010, FIFA also selected Qatar as the World Cup’s host city for 2022. “We go to new lands,” Sepp Blatter, the former FIFA president who has since been ousted from his role amid the high-profile bribing scandal, said at the time, according to the New York Times. “Never has the World Cup been in Russia and Eastern Europe, and the Middle East and Arabic world has been waiting for a long time.”

Russia’s bid beat those from England and joint bids from Spain and Portugal, as well as the Netherlands and Belgium.

The Russia bid was riddled in controversy, however, when FIFA investigated claims both Russia and Qatar bribed voters to secure their bids.

Beyond that, there has been growing concern over security as a result of violent clashes incited by Russia soccer fans in recent months. A police officer died from a heart attack after a recent clash incited by Russian fans, according to Reuters. In 2016, violent clashes broke out between Russian and English fans in Marseille during Euro 2016. And in 2017, FIFA President Gianni Infantino said he was “not at all concerned” about potential clashes at the World Cup, according to BBC.

In April, FIFA announced it charged the Russian Football Union with fan racism that came as a result of a match between Russia and France in St. Petersburg earlier this year, the Associated Press reported. Russian fans reportedly targeted black French players with “monkey” chants. And that’s just the latest charge the country has faced with fan racism in Russian soccer.

Alexi Smertin, the Russian Football Union’s anti-discrimination officer, said it was working to identify those involved in the incident. “If these people’s guilt is proven, then there’s a high likelihood they won’t be allowed to attend World Cup and Russian league games,” he said, according to the AP.

The World Cup comes four years after Russia hosted the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

Ahead of the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea, the International Olympic Committee suspended Russia from competing due to a systematic, widespread doping scheme. Individual athletes from the country were allowed to compete under a nameless flag “under strict conditions.” Still, a Russian curler who initially earned bronze in the 2018 mixed doubles event tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs and was striped of his medal.

How can I watch the 2018 World Cup on TV?

Viewers can catch all 64 matches of the 2018 World Cup live on FOX Sports. Thirty-eight of those matches will air live, including the opening match between Russia and Saudi Arabia on July 14 at 11:00 a.m. E.T., as well as the championship match on July 15 at 11:00 a.m. E.T.

Viewers with cable can also watch the games on the Fox Sports GO app on their iOS or Android phones, or on their Apple TV, FireTV, Roku, Chromecast and Xbox.

Telemundo Deportes, the Spanish-language sports network, will also air games from the World Cup on its network and Universo, as well as online.

What is this whole ‘cat’ thing?

Hermitage oracle cat Achilles moves to new home

A white, deaf, German cat named Achilles may predict the correct winner of the 2018 World Cup. (You read that right.)

Russian officials announced that Achilles, who lives at the State Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, is slated to predict the highly anticipated event’s outcome.

Indeed, Achilles — dubbed the “feline oracle” by the museum — predicted several matches correctly during the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup in Saint Petersburg. For those matches, the cat chose correctly between two bowls of food marked with the flags of the competing countries.

Achilles now joins the ranks Paul the Octopus — an octopus that correctly predicted Germany’s 2014 World Cup win.

Can I still buy tickets to the 2018 World Cup?

Yes, tickets to the 2018 World Cup are still available. The last-minute phase of FIFA’s ticket selling began in mid-April, meaning that tickets are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

“We would advise football fans to place their order online and as soon as the sales period opens, as high demand can be expected and the most sought-after Tickets are likely to sell out very quickly,” FIFA said on its website.

More than 1.69 million tickets have already been purchased since September 2017.

Who won the 2014 World Cup?

Germany v Argentina: 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil Final

The German men’s national team won the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil in a thrilling 1-0 victory against Argentina. Mario Gotze scored the game-winning goal against Argentina in overtime. (It’s unclear if Gotze will make Germany’s team for the World Cup this year, according to ESPN.)

The German win also meant defeat for Lionel Messi, who is widely known as one of the best soccer players in the world. Despite winning the tournament’s best player award in 2014, Messi grieved over Argentina’s loss. “Right now, nothing can console me — not the award of anything else,” he said after the game, according to FIFA. “Our only goal was to take home the World Cup and enjoy our victory with everyone in Argentina.”

In 2018, Messi is hoping for a chance at revenge. “We feel that it’s now or never,” he said recently, according to Sports Illustrated. He acknowledged, however, that Argentina was not a favorite to win this year. “There are much better teams like Spain, Germany, Brazil and France,” he said.

Where will the 2022 World Cup be held?

The 2022 World Cup will be held in Qatar, marking the first time the international event will be held in the Middle East. Organizers have already begun construction on stadiums to prepare for the event.

Meanwhile, FIFA is considering raising the number of teams that can compete in the World Cup to 48 by the event in 2022. That would add 16 teams to those competing, 16 more games and four extra days to the month-long event. The head of the European Leagues has voiced opposition to the plan, since it would extend the event and make the mid-season break even longer, according to NBC Sports.

Carrie Underwood’s Return and Everything You Need to Know About the ACM Awards

Get ready for one of country music’s biggest nights! Us Weekly has everything you need to know about the upcoming 53rd annual Academy of Country Music Awards.

What Time?

The ACMs will broadcast live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas at 8 p.m. ET.

Who’s Hosting?

Reba McEntire is set to host the 53rd ACMs. The country music legend spoke to Rolling Stone about returning as the host for the first time since 2012.

“Since I had turned that duty over to Blake [Shelton] and Luke [Bryan] and then Luke and Dierks [Bentley], they just came back around and asked if I would be interested. I said, ‘Sure!’ I miss it. When you’re sitting at the awards show and you’re out in the audience, once you’ve gotten the honors of hosting, you’re sitting there kind of wondering what’s going on backstage and you miss being a part of that excitement,” she told the mag.

Who’s Performing?

Carrie Underwood is returning to the stage to perform her new single, “Pretty Cry,” for the first time since she revealed she fell down the stairs outside her Nashville home in November 2017. “The Champion” singer told fans in a January blog post that she got “between 40 to 50 stitches” on her face and broke her wrist.

“I’m doing pretty darn good these days!” Underwood wrote on Tuesday, April 10, in another blog post. “My wrist is almost back to normal, about 90 percent there … and the docs say that last 10 percent will come in time. And my face has been healing pretty nicely as well. I definitely feel more like myself than I have in a while.”

Other performers include Bryan, Miranda Lambert, Shelton, Kelsea Ballerini, Kelly Clarkson, Florida Georgia Line, Jason Aldean, Maren Morris, Lady Antebellum, Thomas Rhett, Kenny Chesney, Bebe Rexha and Julia Michaels.

Who’s Nominated?

Chris Stapleton leads the pack with eight nominations, but Rhett follows closely behind with six noms. Stapleton, Bryan, Aldean, Keith Urban and Garth Brooks are set to compete for Entertainer of the Year.

The 53rd annual Academy of Country Music Awards air on CBS Sunday, April 15, at 8 p.m. ET.

I’m a big proponent of the minimalist, dainty jewelry movement. Before brands like Catbird came along, I didn’t even bother wearing jewelry, and even now, I only wear pieces that I don’t have to think about and, ideally, that I can sleep and shower in. That’s pretty much the ethos of …

J. Crew Factory 50% off Everything No Exclusions

JCF: 50% off + Extra 50% off clearance w/ GOODIES

Good grief it’s almost April. Somewhere between the New Year and Valentine’s Day and 8,000 unexpected late round with a very angry old man winter, we’ve almost made it to April. Heck, Opening Day for baseball is tomorrow. Who knew?

All that progress through the calendar means some of us will be spending some time shifting our closests from winter to spring very soon. And J. Crew Factory appears to be hoping you’re looking to make some additions to said closet. A flat 50% off across the board, with no exclusions for once. Even suiting is getting the cut. Plus, there are greater discounts on select items throughout their inventory. Look for those items marked “hidden deal” of cuts bigger than half off. Big thanks to Paul K. and Adam M. for the tips!

Thompson Fit Suits in Worsted or Voyager Wool – $ 218

JCF Thompson Fit Suits

Normally these things sit at $ 299, so for $ 218? That’s a really nice deal. Yes they’re fused, but they look darn good for a $ 200ish suit. And with reasonable care (and a good fit… don’t get pants that are skin tight since those will wear out super fast) a fused, all wool suit should treat those who don’t wear suits all that often pretty well. Review of the Voyager suit can be found here. Lots of wheelhouse colors to pick from, and a few brighter options for spring.

Thompson Unconstructed Linen Blazer – $ 89.00

100% linen exterior, completely unlined back, and cut in their trim but not overly tight Thompson silhouette. Dual vents in the rear. Easy to tailor non functioning cuff buttons. Want suggestions on how to wear something like this? Head here for outfit ideas.

Sunwashed Garment Dyed Polos – $ 21.00

JCF Sunwashed Garment Dyed Polos

Usually goes for closer to $ 30. Big fan of the slight variations in shading that comes with the garment dying process. Inexpensive and well reviewed. Not the sharpest polo you’ll have on hand, but great for every day wear when a t-shirt seems too sloppy.

Thompson Fit Linen Suit Jacket & Pant – $ 178

Under $ 200 for a summer suit? Not bad. Available in either the grey shown here, or a medium blue. Jacket is lined in poly, and while I can’t tell from the images, it might be fully lined. Which sorta defeats the purpose of a linen suit, but, if you don’t run overly warm, it could still be a good spring/summer option.

Hidden Deal: Slim Washed Poplin Button Down – $ 19.95

A basic, but one plenty of us lean on quite often. Sometimes you just need a white button down shirt. Not a thicker oxford cloth. A smoother poplin. And for under twenty bucks. Ta-da. Here it is.

Cotton/Nylon/Merino Striped henley hoodie – $ 44

Not a huge fan of hoodies around these parts, but we might have an exception here. Big fan of the henley detail, that beach-y color palate, and the stripes. Plus it has a bit of wool in there for texture and ventilation? Perfect (mind you, I don’t know how much wool there is in the mix.)

Hidden Deal: Cotton Nylon Field Jacket – $ 44.95

Cotton Nylon Field Jacket

Normally $ 74 when half off, this thing is discounted significantly more as one of their “hidden deals.” A casual basic that looks pretty well executed from here. Cotton/Nylon blend fabric should look and feel more like cotton than poly, while also doing a good job of keeping the rain from soaking in. Like the looks of those utility style pants? Here they are.

Poly/Cotton Walker Vest in Navy or Black – $ 39.50

Poly/Cotton Walker Vest in Navy or Black

I’ve never quite understood the hate that vests seem to get from some corners of the men’s style community. They’re awfully functional. Keeps your core warm while allowing your pits to breathe. What’s wrong with that? Also, the blend of cotton and poly, as well as the not overly puffed insulation, keeps these things from looking like life preservers.

Thompson Fit Unconstructed Barely There Linen Sportcoat – $ 79

J. Crew Factory Barely There Linen Sportcoat

Almost more shirt-like than sportcoat-like. JCF has done these before. And this year’s version is no different in terms of barely-there weight and shirt-like construction. For the dudes who run real hot, but still like to wear a sportcoat from time to time.

Oxford Cloth Pants in Straight or Slim – $ 32.00

J.C.F. Oxford Cloth Pants

One of the best bargains in lightweight, comfortable, spring and summer pants. Oxford cloth is nice and airy. Not super thick or stiff. Available in slim or straight fits.

Thompson Linen/Cotton Suit Jacket & Pant in Windowpane – $ 198

Dark in shade but bold in color. Takes some style onions to pull off as a suit, so, perhaps maybe warm up to THAT much pattern by wearing the jacket and pants separately with other items? See the image at the top of the post. That jacket should look dynamite with jeans or chinos.

SLIM Linen Button Down Shirts – $ 29.50

SLIM Linen Button Down Shirts

Just under thirty for a well reviewed, breathable, true slim fit shirt for the coming heat waves. Lots of colors to pick from.

Washed Leather Belts – $ 19.50

JCF Washed Leather Belts

I have this thing (the lighter one). I like this thing. A basic, but something that walks the line between a chunky casual belt, and a slimmer more dressed up belt. Still casual though. 1.25″ wide. Also available in a lighter brown, but the reviews have said that it’s more bright/lighter in person. Which, if it’s the same leather that’s used on the belt that I have from them, then yes, it’ll be closer to AE’s walnut shade.

Lightweight Chinos in Slim, Straight, or Athletic Fit – $ 29.50

JCF Lightweight Chinos

Huge fan of these things, even for year round use. Noticeably lighter in weight without being flimsy. They are very much NOT a stiff, thick chino pant. Plus, when it gets hot? They’ll be very, VERY nice to have on hand. The difference between these and standard chinos is tangible.

SLIM Fit Cotton Cable Fisherman Sweater – $ 47.50

J. Crew Factory SLIM Fit Cotton Cable Fisherman Sweater | Dappered.com

It really is slimmer than your average fisherman style sweater. As long as you make sure you’ve got the “slim” tab selected. Washable. Cut close enough to the body that if you don’t have a gut, you don’t get the classic fit sweater roll around the middle (or, at least not much of one). Whether you ever cast a net (or a line) here is irrelevant. Size shown above is a medium on 5’10” / 185.

Thompson Fit Flex Chino Blazer – $ 84

Thompson Fit Flex Chino Blazer

Because it’s that good. Full review here.

This 50% off deal at J. Crew Factory is set to expire on Monday 4/2/18.

Everything you wanted to know about Kurdistan

Kurdistan is often thought of as a country but is actually loosely defined as a geo-political region populated by a majority of Kurdish people. Kurdistan encompasses the countries of Turkey, Iraq, Iran, and Syria, and many Kurds wish to form an independent and autonomous nation. It’s important to make sure you understand the geopolitical ramifications of how other parts of the world are affected.

We think it’s important to learn as much as possible about Kurdistan, and the relations within the region. Recognizing and figuring out what Kurdish people want, and how they live in the countries they are in, is crucially important. The Kurds have played an important role recently in helping the United States battle ISIS, so here are a few things you should know about Kurdistan.

It has a unique and difficult history

Kurdistan has had a very difficult and unique history over the years, and this has led it to the point that it is now. The region lies in the Middle East, and its borders overlap Iraq, Iran, Turkey, and Syria. This has led to a big Kurdish influence in these countries, but, also, a lot of infighting and conflict. It is thought that they originated from a mix of Indo-European and Arabic tribes, but they didn’t really become a proper ethnic community before around 1918.

They are so close to independence

The Kurdish people have been controversially campaigning for their own independence for quite some time now. In fact, the Kurds are arguably the largest ethnic group in the world with no independent state of their own. In August 2017, a vote was held surrounding the issue of Kurdish independence, and votes were cast overwhelmingly in favor of independence. So, for the first time in their history, the Kurds could be on their way to becoming an independent nation.

Still not self-reliant

They may want independence, but it’s clear that Kurdistan still relies heavily on the governments of Turkey and Iraq. The main reason behind this is that they are not yet economically self-sufficient, in spite of the amount of oil they produce. So, it remains to be seen whether or not they will try to negotiate some sort of agreement with these nations if they do achieve independence.

They have a strong army

The Kurdish Army is often known as the peshmerga, and they have a reputation for being strong and fierce warriors. They are considered far more effective than the Iraqi Army, but they did struggle badly against ISIS before US intervention. The main problems seem to surround the fact that they don’t have great weapons, not to mention the political element. Whether their army would be strong enough to defend them as an independent nation is debatable.

So, now you know a little more about Kurdistan than you did before! So the next time it gets raised in conversation you will be able to get involved and be more knowledgeable! Kurdistan is a place seeking its own autonomy, and we will have to watch how events unfold surrounding potential independence.

‘Sea of Thieves’: Everything You Need to Know About Trading Companies

Sea of Thieves isn’t like other shared world adventure games. In Destiny or The Division, if you get left behind by a group of your friends, it’s hard to catch up. Levelling is tied to gear, and gear is tied to in-game rewards from events, end-game activities and (a lot of the time) straight up luck. Unless you can sink a lot of time into the game, you’ll get left behind.

Rare prides itself on the fact that Sea of Thieves’ progression system is something a little different – relying on something the development studio likes to call ‘horizontal progression’. There is no overall level to speak of, and all customisation options are purely cosmetic. If you see a pirate decked-out in gold with a fancy rifle and rare parrot on their shoulder, that means nothing: they have all the same tools and weapons as you. They’ll likely just have a better reputation with one of Sea of Thieves’ Trading Companies.

“We wanted to build a game where the value of sharing a rich and diverse world with other players is much more meaningful than ever-increasing stats,” design director Mike Chapman tells us on a studio visit to Rare. “We wanted to create an experience where there are no barriers for players, nothing keeping them from playing with each other. Doing that would really be against the vision of our game.”

Sea Of Thieves party
RARE wants players of all skill levels to be able to enjoy quests with their friends.

The in-game result of this design philosophy is that Sea of Thieves players can purchase voyages (read: quests) in the game from one of the three Trading Companies, and then all crew members get to cast a vote on which of their voyages they want to tackle together.

In honour of fairness, majority wins in Sea of Thieves’ voting system, so don’t ever worry about being forced to undertake a random quest. The flat way that any player can offer up a quest with any other player able to vote on it means even the most weathered pirate can opt to join in on hunts for booty with greenhorns, or will even allow a fledgeling pirate to tackle the most dangerous end-game quests too.

Completing these voyages will award gold, titles, ranks, and cosmetic items – if you can return the booty to the hub outposts. These rewards will be evenly split across the crew, something Rare is intentionally doing to combat toxicity in the title, are a part of Sea of Thieves‘ progression system.

Sea of Thieves cannon combat
Taking part in treacherous sea battles is one way to gain favour with your chosen Trading Company.

The more voyages you complete, the more you’ll rank up the Trading Company that offered it to you. The higher the rank of the Company, the more challenging (but rewarding) the voyages will be. Complete enough of these challenges and you can hit end-game status and start chiselling away at the Pirate Legend content – and of course you can share that with your lower level friends, too.

Each Trading Company has come to the Sea of Thieves with their own motivation, their own goal in this aquatic frontier. Each style roughly reflects a different playstyle, too, so if you want to sample everything Sea of Thieves has to offer, you’re going to want to dip in and out of each Company’s quest lines.

Sea Of Thieves promo art
Looking to become the most pimpin’ pirate on the seven seas? The Gold Hoarders have you covered.

The Gold Hoarders outlook is simple: having been founded by legendary treasure hunters, they want to amass as much wealth as possible. To this end, the Trading Company will send you out on treasure hunts, offering you riddles to complete to find the rarest treasure in the game. These riddles will usually require teamwork and tenacity (as well as a pretty good knowledge of the in-game world) to unpick and will reward you with bigger hoards of lost treasure.

You level up this Company by bringing back chests and selling them to the greedy vendors – in return, you can acquire cosmetics that usually have a pretty bombastic feel to them… think Pirate Bling, if nothing else.

Sea Of Thieves The Merchant Alliance
The Merchant Alliance is where you’ll find the game’s more er, ‘out there’ quests.

The Merchant Alliance wants to control trade in the game. They’re preoccupied with the idea of controlling the world’s economy, paying pirates to scout out supplies and ferry resources such as animals and gunpowder across the sea. Fulfilling contracts, delivering on time and making sure all your cargo makes it to the required location earns you handsome rewards… but if you’re willing to take on more ‘complicated’ stock, those rewards could be even better.

Sea of Thieves has live animal wildlife in-game, and knowing where different breeds of animals live, and how best to get them from one place to another, is a fundamental part of Merchant Alliance gameplay. Want to deliver snakes? You better have one member of your crew dedicated to playing music to calm them.

Want to deliver pigs? Make sure it stays fed. Want to deliver chickens? Good luck, because they like to pop overboard…

Sea Of Thieves The Order Of Souls
While most of RARE’s pirate epic is fairly light-hearted and colourful, The Order Of Souls represent the game’s darker side.

Finally, the Order of Souls is set on mastering the ancient and mysterious magic of the game’s lore, and is willing to use you as a vessel to achieve that. The conjurers and seers of this mysterious sect have learned how to recapture magic from the skulls of former pirates, and will reward anyone bringing them back to the Order.

This is the most combat-focused of the Companies: quests on behalf of this odd bunch will see you charged with taking down infamous skeleton pirate crews, using a variety of combat tactics to come out on top. As you progress higher into the ranks of this Company, you’ll be asked to take on Skeleton Forts – massively challenging outposts home to some very important loot.

These forts will contain more loot than any one ship can carry – so will you split the rewards with other crews, or will you make a round trip, determined to hoard the treasure for yourself?

Though the voyages guide you towards completing a certain task in order to get specific rewards, Sea of Thieves is also keen for you to explore: you can find artefacts, treasure, mysterious skulls and more out in the world, or in the possession of other players. Nabbing these more emergent style rewards can still push you along the path of your chosen Company, and can do so without impacting your freedom.

Sea Of Thieves Treasure
Rare hints at much more to come in ‘Sea Of Thieves’.

But that’s not all. Whilst Rare plans to launch with three companies, our conversations with the developers at the studio would suggest there’s still far more to come. “The Golden Age of Piracy is still yet to come” smiles Mike Chapman, when asked about what Rare has in store for us in the future.

Rare suggests there will be seasonal content coming to the game too, with specific new Trading Companies perhaps linked to certain times of year or in-game events that will offer new quest opportunities and cosmetic items.

It’s clear Rare plans on keeping this game alive for the foreseeable future, and that’s great news – because the studio has made it abundantly clear that this is only the beginning, and these Trading Companies are merely the foundation of something much, much bigger.

5 travel systems under $200 that have everything you need

Joyce Slaton

posted in Products

Travel systems, which come with an infant car seat and a stroller it fits into, are great for new parents, since they make getting around easier. But they can also be pricey, running into the $ 400, $ 500, even the $ 1,000-and-over range.

But there’s no need to spend such lofty sums when there are plenty of more-reasonably priced travel systems out there. Here are 5 of our favorites that deliver 5-star performance and impressive value.

1. Evenflo Sibby

It’s new on the market, so you may not have heard of it yet, and it’s so outrageously beautiful that you may assume it’s expensive. But for under $ 200 (well under, in some cases — the purple model pictured above is on sale for $ 149 right now!), the Sibby looks and works great. It comes with the LiteMax infant car seat, highly rated by parents and narrow enough to be one of our 47 car seats that fit 3 across in most vehicles. And the Sibby stroller has a secret superpower too: a ride-along board that flips up when you don’t need it, and down when you need to carry your new baby’s older sibling — or take it off entirely if you don’t need it (yet!).

Buy it: $ 149-$ 198

2. Urbini Omni Plus

The Omni has a cool feature that makes parents love it — the main stroller seat can be easily converted into a bassinet, so it’s perfect for pushing around infants, if you’d rather leave the car seat in the car. The stroller seat can flip from rear-facing to street-facing too, to accommodate little riders who are sleepy, need attention, or want to look around. Some online reviews complain about the wheels, so if you live on rough terrain, you may want to keep looking. But for those who live close to smooth sidewalks, the Omni Plus is a great-looking bargain with cool features.

Buy it: $ 193.12

3. Graco LiteRider

For every day solid performance, look no further than the LiteRider Click Connect Travel System, which is a shocking bargain at just $ 111. It comes with the SnugRide Click Connect car seat, arguably one of the most popular on the market, and the LiteRider stroller, a stroller so great that it was a 2017 Moms’ Picks finalist for Best Lightweight Stroller. One caveats: maximum weight for the car seat tops out at 22 pounds, so if you expect or have a child on the large side, you may want to try another option. Otherwise, this is a well-working

Buy it: $ 111

4. Baby Trend Expedition Jogger

With two sets of back wheels and one wheel in front, jogging strollers tend to maneuver more easily than strollers with four sets, so if you live in a place where you have to do tight twists and turns, you may want to consider this kind of stroller — with its giant air-filled wheels, it’s great for bumpy rides, too. This travel system comes with the Flex-Loc car seat, a narrow seat that’s one of the 47 car seats that fit 3-across in most vehicles, and the Expedition’s stroller seat reclines flat, so you can safely put your baby in this stroller from birth.

Buy it: $ 167

5. Safety 1st Smooth Ride

The Smooth Ride stroller’s nice features are its agile wheels (which whip smoothly around tight corners, so consider this for city living), and its easy fold: pull one strap in the middle of your baby’s stroller seat and the stroller collapses easily and stands by itself, ideal for those who have to keep their stroller in a closet or another small space. It comes with the onBoard35 LT, which is comfy and well-padded.

Buy it: $ 144

Everything You Need to Know About Christopher Bailey’s Last Burberry Show

Welcome to Runway Matters, where we’re delivering notes straight from the runway so you can quickly digest the most important trends and noteworthy moments from the F/W 18 shows.

It was easy to predict that Christopher Bailey’s final Burberry show would be an emotional peak of February’s London Fashion Week. The designer is much-loved across the industry, and his longstanding tenure at the British heritage brand has seen global growth and many an It piece (anyone else remember those blanket scarves with great fondness?) but the swansong started quite simply with a heartfelt Instagram post just a few days prior. ‘My final collection here at Burberry is dedicated to and in support of—some of the best and brightest organizations supporting LGBTQ+ youth around the world. There has never been a more important time to say that in our diversity lies our strength, and our creativity,’ said Bailey upon launching a new house check that features a rainbow woven in. The simple visual of a swatch pinned onto the invite set the tone, leading to a blazing all-out celebration of inclusivity. Keep reading to see how that came to life…

A darkened warehouse space took industry members and celebrities totally off the normal grid—way out west and on the surprising doorstep of Westfield mall. Swinging spotlights moved to the music—either dancing or perhaps swaying in a sort of faux wind machine, slicing through a cloud of smoke to bring further drama to the occasion. The Burberry check-clad crowd could only really be seen as they filtered into the building, after that point it was a more private affair thanks to the mood lighting. Emotive dance-era tunes filled the space, starting with Runaway building up to a laser-beam extravaganza set to Don’t Leave Me This Way for the finale.

The generation that partied when clubbing felt new and essential, when punks, mods, ravers and new-age hippies were moving in unusually similar circles, when surf culture was building and accessible travel broadening minds… they are the crowd that would understand many of the reference points Bailey pulled together for his version of luxury streetwear. Baja hoodies were worn over ballgown skirts. Shellsuit jackets were thrown on with zero sense of irony. All of the fabrics and visual codes you’d associate with the time—fleece, tie-dye, graffiti, crafty knits, nylon—were all present in one form or another, with our money being placed first onto the Burberry-emblazoned sling bags being a smash. They will be closely followed by the patchworked trench coats and heritage-check visors, if this dedicated group is anything to go by. It was all or nothing for the designer’s last turn, and he definitely turned up the nostalgia dial to the point where we were practically back in time.

It was the range of rainbow options at the very end of the show that will undoubtedly secure the most Instagram coverage of all—who could resist Cara Delevingne (pictured above) swooping down the runway in a technicolour dream coat? A little rainbow mesh market bag is the more casual route in, but the aforementioned rainbow/check hybrid will certainly become a part of Bailey’s legacy. More than the literal symbol of inclusivity, you couldn’t help but sense the gender fluidity of the entire collection—the boys kilt-trousers will no doubt be snapped up by women, every hoodie and jacket bore no stereotypical signs of being destined for a particular sex, and more often than not all of the models wore similar sneakers.

Christopher has gathered quite a loyal following over the years—Anna Wintour, Kate Moss, Alexa Chung, and Sienna Miller were all in attendance to support, along with the biggest audience of international editors any one show can house during the LFW circuit. The runway models that have been part of the brand’s family for some time were also present, with current campaign girl, Adwoa Aboah opening the show. The finale ended in a standing ovation when Bailey took his bow—praise indeed for a few hundred people with sore feet at the end of a busy day.

Because Burberry act on a see now buy now basis we thought it only kind to offer you our shopping list…..

Everything you wanted to know about Casablanca

Most people know Casablanca simply from the classic movie starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. But, it is also one of the most famous and important cities in Morocco. Bordering the Atlantic Ocean, Casablanca is the largest city in Morocco and considered the primary port and financial hub of the country. But, for some reason, travelers always seem to skip it when they head to Morocco.

Places like Marrakech always seem to be more popular, and Casablanca is often romanticised as being this mythical place that exists within the film world. In reality, Casablanca is a vibrant and bustling city that needs to be explored and discovered – and sooner rather than later as well! Here is a list of everything you ever wanted to know about Casablanca – the city, not the movie!

Fascinating architecture

Morocco is pretty amazing for architecture as it is, but Casablanca is particularly stunning when you consider all the amazing buildings here. There is such a range of varying designs here, from Art Deco to ultra modern. To really get a feel for what the architecture here is like, as well as the history behind it, we recommend you take an architecture tour of the city. This is the best way of seeing all the breathtaking sites in one go, and getting your fill of stunning architecture.

The art and culture scene is huge

This probably doesn’t come as much of a surprise to you, but it’s fun to look at the art and culture of Casablanca, and really understand why it’s so special. There is a whole host of galleries and museums that you need to check out. There is also a great deal of street art, musical festivals, and urban dance events that allow you to explore all sides of Casablanca’s entertainment and culture scene.

It’s perfect for foodies

You might not associate Casablanca with being a particularly good foodie city, but that’s because you’re thinking of Marrakech. In reality, Casablanca is nothing like Marrakech when it comes to food and restaurants. In fact, there is a bustling restaurant scene here, popular with locals and tourists alike, and they have a pretty eclectic food scene to enjoy. Casablanca might not seem like the ideal place for foodies, but you’re in for a big treat. You can also enjoy an authentic farm to table experience, in a way that few other places will allow.

There’s a surf culture here!

Believe it or not, Casablanca actually has a pretty rad surfing culture – it kinda makes sense being that it’s right on the Atlantic coast. The beach scene here is actually very similar to Venice Beach in a lot of ways, and this is a good thing. There are some great surfing school here, like La Corniche, not to mention a Quicksilver Pro tournament as well. If surfing is your thing, you could have just unlocked an unknown paradise with Casablanca.

So, now you know that the city is about so much more than a cool movie with some infinitely quotable lines. The magic of Casablanca lives on its streets, in its homes, and through its culture, and this is something you can most certainly be a part of right now.

Everything you wanted to know about French Polynesia

French Polynesia. Even the name sounds like some kind of magical, mythical land. And it’s no coincidence that the places classed as French Polynesia rank among the most beautiful in the world. With stunning geography, gorgeous beaches, glistening lagoons, and some of the greatest natural beauty the world has seen, this is most certainly the promised land for many travelers.

But, though we hear all the time about the beauty of French Polynesia, many of us know so little about it, and that’s a shame. If this is somewhere that interest you when it comes to travel and tourism, it will help to understand more about it. So, here are some of the things you always wanted to know about French Polynesia but never did.

It’s made up of loads of islands

You’ve heard of a few of the places in French Polynesia, like Bora Bora, but it’s about much more than this. In fact, French Polynesia as a place is made up of close to 120 different islands, and 5 archipelagos. Collectively, we like to refer to this group of islands as Tahiti, but that is actually only one of the islands. So, the next time this comes up in a pub quiz, you’ll be right on the money.

They created the overwater bungalow

We’ve all seen those stunning shots of overwater bungalows with thatched roofs, and there are so many of these across the world now. But, we bet you weren’t aware that they were created in French Polynesia! The first ever one was created on the French Polynesian island of Moorea in the 1960s. These bungalows have become such an iconic part of this place, and offer something unique and stunning for travelers as well.

The word tattoo comes from Tahiti

Yes, really! Believe it or not, the origins of the word ‘tattoo’ can be traced back to the island of Tahiti. Specifically, to the Tahitian word ‘tatau’ which is translated to mean appropriate or fitting. So, in a sense, this actually makes it kind of a mixed bag when it comes to tattoos – some of them are anything but appropriate! Tattoos have been a crucial part of Polynesian life and culture for centuries.

It belongs to France

As you might have gathered from the name, French Polynesia is a part of the country of France. If you have ever been to France, you’ll know how diverse it is, but you certainly won’t have associated it with the epic beauty of French Polynesia. The islands were their own kingdom before they were annexed by the French in 1880, and it is now a semi-autonomous region of France.

These are just a few of the things we reckon you never knew about French Polynesia, and they will certainly give you more of an insight into this stunning place. If you’ve never visited, we absolutely recommend that you go next year, and do as much as you can to experience the whole of this place.

Who is Jack Brooksbank? Everything you (probably don’t) need to know about Princess Eugenie’s man 👑

He’s British, he’s called Jack and he’s about 31. All the insider info on Eugenie’s new man…

Jack Brooksbank

Hearty congrats to Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank on their engagement news. Much like the Wendy Cope poem, we wait years for one royal wedding and then two trundle along at once!

But who exactly is The Firm’s newest recruit, how did he and Eugenie meet and when is their wedding expected to happen?

Here’s everything you didn’t know you needed to know (and probably still don’t!)

(Can we also just take a moment to appreciate The Duchess of York’s Instagram account? Is that Lao Tzu quote, Fergs? Loving your work)

Who is Jack Brooksbank?

He’s a British chap called Jack Brooksbank! His parents (who we’re assuming are pretty delighted about how things have panned out) are Nicola and George Brooksbanks. The latter is an accountant and company director.

Brooksbank went to the private Stowe School and then decided against University in favour of a career in hospitality (more on that later).

In case you’re wondering (you’re probably not) the name Brooksbank is an old English surname that derives from the Middle English ‘Brikes’ bank – a person who works or lives near a riverbank.

How old is Jack Brooksbank?

He’s 31.

What is Jack Brooksbank’s job?

Brooksbank is in hospitality. He started out as a waiter, working at Chelsea’s Admiral Codrington pub and the Markham Inn, where he befriended Eugenie’s cousin Prince Harry and his all-weathers friend-in-waiting Guy Pelly.

Brooksbank then moved to manage Chelsea nightclub Mahiki, where virtually every Millennial royal has enjoyed a few Jolly Rogers at some point (K-Middy was a frequent flier back when she wasn’t burdened by the heavy yoke of Royal duty – producing heirs, opening squash courts etc. etc).

Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank

How did Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank meet?

Eugenie and Jack began dating nearly seven years ago after meeting in the Swiss ski resort of Verbier. ‘There was an immediate attraction and since that meeting, they have barely been apart,’ a source told the Daily Mail. Other than the two years of long-distancing they did when Eugenie moved to New York in 2013…

How did the couple get engaged?

At the beautiful private island resort of Calala in Nicaragua over the New Year. A step up from Prince Harry’s decision to pop the question to Meghan Markle after a roast chicken dinner at their cottage (Calala Vs. Chicken Cottage? We’re so Team Calala).

What’s Princess Eugenie’s engagement ring like?

Very pretty! A blush-colored padparadscha sapphire ring (nope, us neither) nestling in a ring of diamonds. It’s strikingly similar to her mother Fergie’s ruby and diamond engagement ring – as the beady-eyed Royal experts at Majesty Magazine were quick to point out.

When is the Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank wedding?

In Autumn 2018 at St George’s Chapel, Windsor, where Meg and Harry are also tying the knot on 19th May.

P.S: Beatrice, if this isn’t a golden opportunity to upstage all proceedings (including your sister) with another octopus hat, we don’t know what is.

Everything You Need to Know About Curling for the 2018 Winter Olympics

Curling is our strange quadrennial winter sports obsession. Depending on one’s taste, it’s either a compelling chess match on ice, or glorified shuffleboard with no proper place in a global sporting spectacle. But once the opening ceremonies of the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics begin on Feb. 9, you — or someone you encounter regularly — will suddenly start caring about curling. You know, that winter Olympic sport with the stones and the brooms and that dartboard-looking-thing on the TV.

For NBCUniversal, the Olympics broadcaster, curling is a consistent ratings winner. CNBC goes from picking stocks to sweeping rocks during the Games, as the network will air hours of evening curling coverage during the Olympics.

So it pays to know the basics of the sport. Here’s what you need to know about curling’s rules, positions, scoring, equipment and more:

What is the history of curling?

The origin of curling traces back to 16th century Scotland, where the sport was played on frozen ponds and lochs. The first recorded match took place around 1541: a Scottish notary recorded a challenge between a monk at Paisley Abbey and a relative of the abbott. Scottish immigrants spread the sport to North America: the first Canadian curling club opened in Montreal in 1807, and the first American club appeared in Pontiac, Mich. in 1828. The Royal Caledonian Curling Club in Scotland, the so-called “mother club” of curling, wrote the first official curling rules in 1838.

Curling first appeared as a medal sport at the 1924 Olympics in Chamonix, France. Only the men held a tournament, and Great Britain won gold (the entire team was Scottish). Curling made five appearances as an Olympic demonstration sport — in Lake Placid in 1932, Garmisch-Partenkirchen in 1936, Innsbruck in 1964, Calgary in 1988 and Albertville in 1992 — before the sport was added to the Olympic program in Nagano in 1998. Since 1998, Canada has won three Olympic golds in curling on the men’s side — including the last three — while Switzerland and Norway each won one. Both Canada and Sweden have earned two women’s gold medals in curling; Great Britain won the women’s gold in 2002.

Olympic curling stones weigh between 38 and 44 pounds; the granite is harvested from Ailsa Craig, an island off the west coast of Scotland that resembles, from a distance, a curling stone.

How do you play curling and what are the rules?

A key driver of curling’s appeal is its relative simplicity. Though the sport may have unfamiliar terms, and thus seem complicated, it’s actually pretty easy to follow.

A curling match consist of 10 ends, which are equivalent to innings in baseball. In each end, the four players on both teams alternate throwing stones. The lead throws first, followed by the second, then the third — or vice-skip — then finally, the skip. Each of the four players on the competing teams throws two stones per end, for a total of 16 stones. The “skip” is the most important player on the team. The skip not only throws the last stone in an end — which often determines the scoring — but also directs the overall strategy.

To execute a shot, a curler pushes a foot off the hack, a piece of rubber akin to a starting block. The curler slides across the ice, or sheet, to the hog line, and must release the stone before it touches the line. The stone then heads for the house — the area with four concentric circles on the other side of the sheet that loosely resembles a dartboard. The house is the scoring area.

How does curling scoring work?

Only one team can score during a curling end. The team with the most stones closest to the curling bullseye — the button — is awarded points. So if, after 16 stones are thrown, Team A has a stone right on the button, and Team B has a stone a few feet off the button, Team A scores a point. If Team A had one stone on the button and a stone a few feet off the button, while Team B had a stone on the outer edge of the house, Team A scores two points.

The team that fails to score in an end gets the hammer, or the advantage of throwing the last stone, in the next end. If no stones remain in the house after an end, no points are awarded: the team with the hammer in a scoreless, or blank, end retains the hammer in the subsequent end. The team with the most points after 10 ends wins the match.

What’s with the curling brooms?

After a curler throws a stone, his or her teammates will often start sweeping the ice in front the stone as it glides down the ice. Why is sweeping the activity that requires the most exertion in this particular Olympic sport? Physics! The sweeping warms the ice and reduces friction, allowing the stone to travel farther and straighter. Depending on the path of the stone and its intended target, a team’s skip will instruct the other curlers to either start sweeping like a teen whose parents are returning home early to an illicit house party, or to lift their brooms.

What’s new for curling at the 2018 Winter Olympics?

A mixed doubles tournament! Olympic organizers have added a mixed doubles curling event to the PyeongChang program to complement the men’s and women’s competitions. Mixed doubles curling teams consist of just two players — a woman and a man — instead of the usual four players per team. Matches are eight ends long, not 10, and the two players alternate throwing five stones per end instead of eight: one player throws the first and last stones, while the other throws the second, third, and fourth rocks.

Mixed doubles adds a wrinkle. A sixth stone for each team isn’t thrown, but set on the ice before the start of the end. The stone of one team is positioned in the middle of the ice, guarding the house, while the other team’s stone is set in the house, near the button. The team with the hammer decides where the stone is positioned; if the team places its stone as the guard, however, the other team gets to take the last shot of the end.

Once per game — but not in tie-breaking “extra ends” — the mixed doubles team with the hammer can decide to exercise a “power play.” In the power play, the pre-positioned stones are shifted to the side.

In a perfect world, would curling power plays involve broomstick fighting and a penalty box like they do in hockey, rather than moving rocks around? Probably. But a more genteel game will do just fine. Mixed doubles scoring is the same as the traditional curling game. The team with the most stones closest to the button earns the points in that end.

Who are the American curling competitors at the Olympics?

For the third consecutive Olympics, John Shuster, 35, will serve as skip for the U.S. men’s team. He’s the first American men’s curler to make four Olympic squads; Shuster, a Chisholm, Minnesota native, was lead for the 2006 Olympic team that won bronze in Torino. Shuster’s Olympic skip record isn’t so sterling. Faced with high expectations after the 2006 bronze medal, the Americans finished last in Vancouver and ninth in Sochi.

Joining Shuster on the team are John Landsteiner — who competed with Shuster in Sochi — Tyler George and Matt Hamilton. Hamilton’s sister, Becca, made the U.S. women’s team, joining fellow first-time Olympians Nina Roth — the team’s skip — Tabitha Peterson and Aileen Geving.

The Hamilton siblings, who hail from McFarland, Wisconsin, will be busy in PyeongChang. Older brother Matt, 28, and sister Becca, 27, will represent the U.S. in mixed doubles.

Millions will be watching their PyeongChang power play.

Everything You Need To Know About ‘PUBG’s Zombies Mode

PUBG Zombies is a bit of an oddity. Brendan “PlayerUnknown” Greene’s original vision of a Battle Royale spawned from his desire to speed up the combat-focused parts of DayZ — a game ostensibly about surviving a zombie apocalypse. To make his vision a reality, he removed the zombies (and made dozens of other tweaks). It’s ironic, then, that so many players find themselves drawn to a PUBG mode which adds the shuffling undead back into the game.

Of course, there’s a twist here. The zombies in PUBG Zombies are controlled by players, not AI, and they drop alongside the humans. If you’re a human, you have to kill all the zombies — and there’s a lot of them. If you’re a zombie, you simply have to kill the humans. The mode itself started as a bit of a hack — though not the bad kind — and has grown into something of a phenomenon itself.

How To Play ‘PUBG’ Zombies

Getting into a game of Zombies is super easy, although it relies on there being a custom game available.

All you need to do, when at the main menu for PUBG, is click Custom Games and sort by Zombies in the filter. You should be able to see any available Zombies games — click on one from the list and you’re off and running.

Bear in mind, it’s highly unlikely that you’ll get to play as a human. It’s actually one of the problems with the mode in the eyes of Twitch streamer Stabbies, a PUBG Partner and the OCE region’s pre-eminent PUBG shoutcaster. Stabbies runs Customs games for Oceanic players on the regular, changing the rules of PUBG to create wildly varied game experiences. Modes like Demo Derby — where players only have cars — and Western War — where participants are limited to Win 94s and Revolvers — are extremely popular. But Stabbies has a firm rule against running Zombies as a mode.

“It’s fun, but it’s pretty boring if you’re a zombie,” Stabbies explained. “The rhythm of the game is thrown. In a regular game a lot of people drop down, gather loot and then all converge into a circle. But for Zombies that rhythm is ruined. You can’t loot as a zombie, it’s hard to communicate with other zombies and it’s generally not a lot of fun if you land near the survivors early and can’t form a giant horde with [your undead teammates].”

How To Play As A Zombie

That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t play Zombies, by any means. If you’re all about those brains, there’s a bunch of fun to be had. You just have to work for it. If you’re playing on the Zombies team, press Ctrl-T until it says “Voice Chat Unmuted” so you can hear your teammates. Try to get them to land somewhere central — School or Pecado are good options on each map. Zombies can’t use vehicles, so the closer to the middle of the map you are, the less time you’ll have to spend travelling to get into the circle.

If there are vehicles — the host can turn them off, but probably won’t — punch out the tyres by crouching next to them and hitting. It’s something to do, but it also restricts the Human player’s options when they come near.

You’ll probably have to make your own fun for a little while. The humans probably won’t come close until they absolutely have to — when the circle forces them to. Try to follow crates if you can — when you’re unarmed any weapon is powerful, but an M249 is more powerful than most.

When they come close, remember your strength is in numbers. While some of the zombies are bee-lining straight at the humans, see if you can predict where they’re going to run next and try to cut them off. If they manage to knock you, try to find a space where your teammates can get you back up — just like you would in regular PUBG.

Most importantly, have fun. You’re a zombie, just a cell in a larger organism. Victory comes when the humans die, regardless of whether or not you are the one who gets the kills — all the cells win when the organism wins.

How To Play As A Human

Right off the bat, you should know that as it currently works you’re unlikely to get to play as a Human in a Zombies mode custom game. Generally the lobby host will set it up so that they can control who plays on the human side — although very rarely you’ll find some true open lobbies. As custom game controls become more robust, hosts will ideally be able to assign people to certain teams for doing well as zombies and other things.

If you do manage to play as a Human, there’s a few things to keep in mind! Don’t carry too many heals, first of all. Once you start to really get hit by the swarm of zombies, your opportunities to stop will be near non-existent, so you’re really just wasting space carrying every First Aid Kit you can find. Instead, grab every bit of ammo you can. In regular PUBG, any of the other 96-99 players on the map could kill your enemies for you, but in Zombies only your squad can stop the Zombies menace.

Even if you think you got enough ammo, you probably didn’t. That moment when you realise you have to ration your ammunition — that you’ve been wasting it on speculative pot shots from a distance — that’s when the panic sets in.

When the swarm is upon you, be sure to juke as if your life depends on it — because it basically does. You can throw a few zombies off if you about face and run back at them for a few moments before continuing on your way. If you unequip your weapons until you’re going to use them, you run faster (which is also good to know for when you’re chasing the circle in regular PUBG).

The other key thing to do when playing as a Human is to realise that you’re only going to have fun if the Zombies are having fun. If you go in with the idea of victory as your key goal, and you play it like you’re chasing a chicken dinner, you’ll find the Zombies are more reluctant to return for another game. If you restrict yourself and your crew to only using vehicles for transport, or to not wearing armour, or ditching the 8x scopes, the zombies won’t feel l
