EXCLUSIVE: ‘13 Reasons Why’ Actor Defends Season 2’s Most Controversial Scene

SPOILER WARNING: This article contains SPOILERS for Season 2 of 13 Reasons Why. Proceed at your own risk.

When 13 Reasons Why exploded with Season 1, it wasn’t just because fans loved it. Which they did. It was also because of the controversy it stirred.

In Season 1, the show tackled toxic high school culture, rape and teen suicide – with some scenes pretty graphic and hard-hitting, particularly for a teen show. Some of the series’ critics felt that the way in which the topics were handled wasn’t all that responsible. But if anything, in Season 2 the shock value is upped. This time, the creative forces behind the show have been especially careful to issue clear and frequent warnings about its content, coupled with advice on where to seek help should the show’s subject matter affect you. Some Twitter users have issued trigger warnings for sexual assault victims and urged people not to watch.

‘Don’t watch it if it offends you’ seems to be the motto of Netflix, the service which airs the show. CEO Reed Hastings said: “It is controversial. But nobody has to watch it. We’re an on-demand service, and we feel great about the possibility of season 3 and look forward to supporting the team’s work in that.”

It will come as no surprise, perhaps, that Season 3 has since been greenlit. And that’s despite a particularly graphic and harrowing scene in the season finale which sees school baseball star and bully Montgomery de la Cruz brutally assault outsider Tyler Down. You can read a description of what happens in that scene here.

FANDOM caught up with Timothy Granaderos, who plays Montgomery in 13 Reasons Why, and asked him why it was important to include the scene in the season finale.

Deliberately Provocative

13 Reasons Why
Timothy Granaderos' Monty confronts Devin Druid's Tyler.

“It was part of the inciting incident for Devon’s character Tyler to carry out his plan at the end. So, for the story it makes sense. But also, it’s a subject matter that we don’t really talk about. Male-on-male sexual assault happens more than we realise and it’s an issue that I think needs to be addressed and talked about,” says Granaderos.

Season 2 ends with Tyler planning and almost carrying out a horrifying school shooting. He’s talked down by Dylan Minette’s Clay Jensen outside the doors to the school.

Granaderos believes that the show is deliberately provocative.

“Obviously there’s some controversy around our show but all the issues that we deal with are tough subject matters to speak on, so if we can get a conversation started about those things then that’s what we intend to do. In a real and honest way too,” he says.

He says that being a part of the show has “opened my eyes to the idea that as actors, we’re more than just entertainers.”

One of the criticisms directed at the series is that the attack seems to come from nowhere, which makes it doubly shocking. Granaderos offers his thoughts on why his character carried out the horrific attack.

“In preparation, I did research and I tried to figure out why he did it. I found that the root of his actions was pain,” he says. “He had all this pain and displaced anger from the baseball team’s season being cancelled and, you know, his ‘brother’ Bryce basically breaking up with him, and he didn’t know where to go or who to turn to. So he dealt with it in the only way he knew how — and that was physically abusing someone who he felt was weaker and [who] he blamed for part of his pain.”

Sweaty Palms

Grenaderos admits that he wasn’t surprised at the reaction to the savage attack they depicted on screen. And, in fact, he had a very telling physical reaction to the scene after reading it in the script.

“I didn’t know about [the scene] until later on in the season,” he says. “Our showrunner approached me a couple of episodes out and asked me if it was something I’d be comfortable doing. And at that point in time, that scene was just a pitch, it wasn’t even confirmed that it was going to be in the script. He just wanted to make sure I was comfortable doing it. So, I knew it was coming and it was shocking when I read it. I remember just turning the pages and my palms were sweating.”

At some point, he says, everyone was “all on the same page” and the scene was shot, and included.

“Going into it we felt very prepared,” he says. “We had a safety meeting where Devin [Druid, who plays Tyler] and I spoke with the producers and our director as well as the stunt coordinator how everything was going to play out. They showed us storyboards of the space and the shot so all the technicalities were clear in our mind before we went into the scene. They also allowed us to ask any questions we had.”

If their plan with Season 3 is to up the ante once again, it’s going to be a tough call to include anything more shocking than Montgomery’s horrendous sexual assault on Tyler. But if 13 Reasons Why is indeed a show that sets out to provoke, you can bet they’ll try.

13 Reasons Why Season 2 is available to stream now on Netflix.

MOVIE APP UPDATE:

Something wicked this way comes: street artist Eelus launches a new and exclusive 3D collectable.

As the new Star Wars movie hits the big screens, Brighton-based artist Eelus returns to turn ‘Shat-At’ – an early print inspired by the sci-fi series – into his first sculptural work for artrepublic

Drawing inspiration from pop culture, film, graphic design and art history, Eelus has gained a reputation for creating striking images that often play on the macabre. Intertwining colourful backdrops with monochromatic figures, the street artist points to the necessary interplay between mood, emotions and light and dark. But how does these stylistic traits translate into a three-dimensional form? We catch up with the artist ahead of his new release to find out more…

Your latest sculpture is based on one of your earliest works what inspired the original print?

I’ve always been a big fan of Star Wars and I’d had this idea rattling around my noggin for years that was originally intended to be just a fun t-shirt design. Then I started stencilling back in 2001 and I made the image that you know now and started to paint it around East London where I lived and hung out. It was one of my first ever stencils and then went on to be my first ever screen print edition with Pictures On Walls (RIP).

Yes its sad that POW is no more, it launched the careers of many artists. Where do you think young artists can go now to get published or do you think things are more egalitarian so people no longer need someone like POW to launch their career?

I think now with the rise of free social media platforms like Instagram and easy do-it-yourself websites it’s so easy to get your work out there without going through a gallery or a publisher. It’ll probably take you a little longer to build a solid following, but you don’t need many people to get the ball rolling (‘1000 True Fans’ is an interesting article on this by Kevin Kelly). If you concentrate on the quality of the work above all else, everything else will follow in it’s own time.

What then lead you into turning SHAT-AT from a 2D print into a 3D sculpture?

I wanted to commemorate the 10 year anniversary of the release with something special. It’s taken so long to get the sculptures finished and the whole project to a standard that I’m happy with, I’m a couple of years late, but there you go.

Did you have an AT-AT walker when you were a child, and did you use one in the creation of your sculpture?

I absolutely did, and still do, it’s in my studio. I had a model-maker create one from scratch during the original sculpt but in the end I decided to have one 3D printed and we made a mould from that.

They fall over very easily do you think it is a good design to use for a battle vehicle?

In terms of it’s use as tank, I think it’s pretty good. They’re intimidating for a start, seeing those plod over the horizon toward you you’d probably feel the same as a Roman solider seeing a Carthaginian war elephant for the first time. You’d be terrified.

Why do you think Star Wars has left such an impression on our popular culture and do you think it will survive the test of time?

The basic storyline that runs through the films is one that we’ve been telling for thousands of years, It’s the classic archetype of the ‘Hero’s Journey’ and is timeless. It’s an age-old narrative regurgitated as a science fiction spaghetti western set in another galaxy and it was released in a time when the idea of movie merchandising was about explode. So the characters and the story escaped the screen and entered our lives in ways we’d never seen before. The kids of the late 70’s, early 80’s went crazy for it, or at least an awful lot of us did, I did.

I think the original films, for me anyway, will stand the test of time. A lot of the new ones will fall by the wayside as far as I’m concerned, especially now there’s one coming out every year it seems. The excitement is being diluted, the whole thing is losing its magic. Or maybe I’m just getting old? I can’t wait to see what my daughter makes of it all when she’s old enough.

Who is you favourite Star Wars character from the original three films?

Unquestionably Yoda. You watch Empire and Jedi now and he looks a bit shit compared to what we’ve all become used to with the developments of CGI, but he’s still a rock solid character that you believe in 100%. CGI can be great but I wish there were more current films using in-camera puppets like they did in films like Star Wars, Labyrinth, Dark Crystal etc.

Would you like to have Yoda living in your house?

Yeah why not. Constant wisdom from my own little green guru.

All of your works have a sci-fi element to them, what’s your favourite work of science fiction?

I wouldn’t say all, but a lot do. My all time favourite would be H.G Well’s War Of The Worlds. I was introduced to it by my grandparents when I was very young and it has real sentimental value, to the point where I have a martian tripod and a line from the book tattooed on my arm. I also have a small collection of various editions of the book all with different cover designs. You may sound the nerd alarm now if you so wish.

Has the experience of producing work changed over the years as you moved into working as an artist full time?

Sure. When I started I was creating purely for myself with little thought to financial reward and so the creative process was a lot more relaxed and free as I had the safety net of a full time job to fall back on.

Then around 10 years ago I quit my job and made art full time, and with that comes the fear and anxieties that situation brings, when every day is a hustle of one kind or another just to make sure you’re making ends meet. That situation can often have an effect on the work you produce as you need to survive; and selling work, getting paid, these are boxes that need to be ticked each and every week in one way or another to allow me to live the life I like to live. I’ve been broke and in debt before and it’s not for me.

I consider myself lucky to be able to produce and sell work reasonably easy and bring money home to support my family, and to do that, sometimes a big ‘crowd pleaser’ of a print is produced. I then have a little space and time to relax and create more personal works. It’s the same as making movies, you make a big budget action or 2 and then go away to work on more niche indie films. But I definitely feel like I’m taking steps towards making all of my work more honest and personal. I think a lot of that is coming from caring less what people think of me and my work as I get older. There’s a calming reassurance in that.

Art is often a hobby and used to escape from work, what do you to escape form work and wind down?

I don’t think I ever truly escape as my mind is always mulling some kind of madness over, it’s inescapable. But generally I read a lot, watch movies, hang out with my girlfriend and our daughter, dance in the kitchen. A dense green forest is where I’m at my most calm.

It’s currently the highest rated superhero movie on Rotten Tomatoes, and its story – about an unassuming suburban family who secretly have superpowers and fight crime on the side – resonated in a way that helped it grow to become one of Pixar’s most beloved movies.

EXCLUSIVE: Chanel Picks Margot Robbie as Face of Coco Neige Line

SNOW QUEEN: Just weeks after being introduced as the latest brand ambassador for Chanel, Margot Robbie has stepped in front of the lens of creative director Karl Lagerfeld to appear in her debut advertising campaign for the French luxury house.
The Australian actress has been selected as the face of Chanel’s first Coco Neige collection, set to hit Chanel boutiques in July and August in tandem with its fall ready-to-wear. The line, dedicated to winter sports and après-ski, mixes technical pieces with classic Chanel codes like tweed, leather and camellia motifs.
Robbie is pictured against a background of blue sky and clouds wearing items including a soft chunky sweater, a parka or a down jacket. The eight visuals will break from June 10 in the July editions of leading international magazines.
“This shoot was one of the greatest experiences of my career. The energy and vibe on set was so wonderful and collaborative,” Robbie said in a statement.
“One of the first things Karl Lagerfeld said to me was that we never need to take ourselves too seriously. He has such a creative mind and he knows exactly what he wants and the minute he captured it, we were moving onto the next shot.

‘Drag Race’ Exclusive: Monique Heart Takes a Side in Vixen/Eureka Feud

Spoiler alert: This post contains spoilers from the Snatch Game episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 10. Proceed with caution.

After a rough Snatch Game showing from many of our favorite queens on the latest episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race, it was ultimately Monique Heart that was forced to sashay away.

FANDOM caught up with the Kansas City queen the morning after her elimination to find out what went wrong during that Carly Rae Jepsen lip sync. Although they didn’t show it in Untucked, Monique said she did listen to her iPod to try to learn the lyrics before going back on stage, but she also got distracted by “that whole debacle with Vixen.”

“It was a lot because I knew that I shouldn’t have been bottom three. I should not have been bottom two. I knew that going in before they called my name,” Monique told FANDOM, saying that it was Asia that should have been in her place. “But I just wanted to get ready and it was just a lot because it’s like I know that my look is what’s gonna be the very thing that probably gets me through. So trying to prepare and you have someone across from you going postal because they might go home. It’s a lot.”

Monique in Untucked

Despite the friction with The Vixen, Monique said the Chicago queen was justified in her anger towards Eureka, explaining that the Elephant Queen frustrated her throughout the competition as well.

“People can try to hate Vixen, but everything that happened and every response Vixen gave was somewhat valid,” Monique said. “When she went into it with Eureka, Eureka did try to dismiss her and she was just talking, like, that’s so rude. If it [had happened to] Eureka, it would have been a whole ordeal.”

Monique went on to say that never being recognized for her amazing homemade looks had her feeling like the “judges didn’t want me there.” But now that she’s gone, she’s rooting for “everybody black … and Aquaria.”

When it comes to being a queen of color, Monique told the other queens this week that she doesn’t get political in her Kansas shows because of the demographics of the people attending.

“You can’t do something that’s going to offend them to the core, but at the same time, I need you to be educated and get smarter on the things that are going on in society that may not necessarily affect you,” she said. “I need you to be educated. But I also need your money to pay my bills. So there’s a line that I choose not to cross.”

Monique confessional

But now that she’s become a RuGirl and gained a huge following, what’s next for the outspoken queen?

“I really want to get on daytime television,” she said. “I want to become my own entity. I want to own my own bank. I just want to get all my coins and stack them up and take care of my mother.”

With the exit of Monique, only seven queens remain. It’s time for our weekly power ranking of the contestants based on what we’ve seen all season. Head to Twitter and let us know if you agree.

7. The Vixen

RuPaul's Drag Race Season 10 The Vixen

Another week, another time Vixen is at the bottom of our list. But like a cockroach or Randy Jackson on the original American Idol, we just can’t get rid of her. If Monique knew the words to the lip sync things may be different, but alas, Vixen lived to see another week. And while her negative energy is depressing and her hypocritical demands that Eureka change her personality are annoying, she’s really only at the bottom of this list because she is not bringing it on the runway or in the challenges. But now she’s in the top seven. And that’s just something we’re all going to have to live with.

6. Asia O’Hara

RuPaul's Drag Race Season 10 Asia O'Hara

Asia still has what it takes to make it further in this competition, but she is in a timeout after that horrendous Beyonce impersonation on Snatch Game. Choosing to do Bey over Whitney was a horrible mistake as it is, but then to portray the pop star as an abusive mother was just uncomfortable to watch. Her Shape of Water mermaid look kept her out of the bottom two, but she better step it up to remind us why she deserves to make it to the top.

5. Kameron Michaels

RuPaul's Drag Race Season 10 Kameron Michaels

Kameron doesn’t talk much, but perhaps she’s just been trying to keep the secret that she’s an actual contender for the crown. After all, RuPaul called Pearl out for having no personality in Season 7 but the queen still managed to sleepwalk her way into the top three. Kameron delivers good looks each week and for someone who isn’t a comedy queen, being safe in Snatch Game is honestly an accomplishment. But as the contestants continue to sashay away, she will have to pull out an actual win to keep herself in the game.

4. Monét X Change

RuPaul's Drag Race Season 10 Money X Change

After two weeks in the bottom, Monét has now spent the past two weeks in the top. She really needs a win under her belt to become an official contender, but the queen definitely has the skills, looks, and talent to make that happen. But for now, being in the middle of the pack can only get you so far so she’s going to have to start showing what it is that makes her such a fan favorite when she’s performing back in New York.

3. Miz Cracker

RuPaul's Drag Race Season 10 Miz Cracker

We’re not quite ready to take Miz Cracker out of our top three yet, but she still hasn’t landed a main challenge win. And while she seemed to come in second place for the first four weeks of the competition, she has been slipping in recent challenges. And what’s worse, they have been comedy challenges, which should be the time she shines. Even still, there is definitely a charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent that she possesses that would make it feel wrong to not see her in the top three.

2. Aquaria

RuPaul's Drag Race Season 10 Aquaria

It seems we may owe Aquaria an apology. Despite her insane talent at turning out amazing looks, we assumed that her lack of personality would send her home much earlier. But the fact that she was able to win this season’s Snatch Game, which takes intelligence and a great sense of humor to pull off, it’s clear that we didn’t give her enough credit in the performance category. Now that she has two wins under her belt in two different categories (one for costume creation and one for her Snatch Game impersonation) she has proven she has enough skill to take her to the top.

1. Eureka

RuPaul's Drag Race Season 10 Eureka O'Hara

Fresh off of two wins in a row, Eureka landed in the top yet again for her performance as Honey Boo Boo in Snatch Game. And so, after a season of no clear frontrunner, we finally have a queen stepping up to the plate. The Elephant Queen threw us for a loop when she got in her head and landed in the bottom at the start of the season, but she has been a strong contender ever since. She’s got the personality, the looks, and the talent. She may not be the most popular queen online or even in the workroom, but the opinions of others don’t make her any less worthy of the crown based on what she has shown us so far.

NME’s legacy celebrated by acclaimed photographic artist Mark Vessey in an artrepublic exclusive

When Time Inc. UK recently announced that, after 66 years in print, the NME would no longer exist in print format, it created a wave of nostalgia for days gone by. And, at the same time, inspired a contemporary photographic artist’s creativity.

Once an iconic music magazine, the NME was considered a zeitgeist-defining bible for rock fans and had the power to inspire new music scenes and make or break young bands. Now, in celebration of the magazine’s legacy, acclaimed British photographic artist Mark Vessey is issuing a limited edition photograph entitled ‘New Musical Express’, exclusively through artrepublic.

Inspired by the magazine’s design and strong visual identity, Vessey chose the NME as his latest subject – for him, the spines of the magazine provided a unique way to tell the story of music culture. As such, his photograph features a stack of magazines spanning the last couple of decades, with special issues that were dedicated to the likes of The Clash, Nirvana, Radiohead, The Manic Street Preachers, Bob Dylan and The Who.

This exclusive piece is part of an ongoing body of work called Collections, which takes its inspiration from Vessey’s love of vintage magazines, books, records and classic packaging design. With the collector’s obsessive eye for detail and every crease and scuff lovingly captured on medium format film in his Brighton studio, the photographer takes everyday objects and allows us to appreciate them in a new light – The Face magazine, James Bond novels and Penguin books have been the subject of earlier works. With ‘New Musical Express’ Vessey captures a very specific moment in time, and marks its place as an artefact of 20th and 21st century popular culture.

Fans of the magazine, and the artist, can pick up this limited edition ‘New Musical Express’, fresh off the printing press, at artrepublic from Thursday 5 April 2018 at 10AM . The C-Type photograph comes in two sizes – 80x80cm (edition of 50), and the rarer 110x110cm (edition of 15).

View our Mark Vessey collection, including this latest exclusive print, online or at our Brighton Gallery. Call 01273 724829 or email brighton@artrepublic.com.

‘Drag Race’ Exclusive: Yuhua on Racist Fans and Why Monét Felt “Stuck” with Her

Spoiler alert: This post contains spoilers from Episode 3 of RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 10. Proceed with caution.

On the latest episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 10, the queens were tasked with creating commercials for fake dating apps. And after failing to make herself ugly enough to be considered a “Butterface,” Yuhua Hamasaki was forced to sashay away.

FANDOM caught up with the New York City queen to find out how she’s feeling after the elimination and what she thinks went wrong.

“I should have just went with my instincts and used the prosthetic nose to make myself uglier, but I was listening to my teammates and I wanted to be a team player,” she explained. “I didn’t want to be the bad one and say, ‘Hey, I’m not gonna listen to you.’”

Even still, Yuhua says she isn’t placing the blame on anyone else, adding, “It was my decision to listen to them, so it was my fault. But I have no regrets doing it.”

Yuhua and Aquaria out of drag on 'Drag Race'
Yuhua and Aquaria out of drag on 'Drag Race'

Yuhua was picked last when it came time to form teams and was eventually placed on the team of her New York sister, Monét. But since they worked together in NYC, why did Monét say she felt “stuck with Yuhua”?

“I do not know, actually,” she responded when we asked her about the shady comment. “I’m going to have to talk to her about that. We’re really good friends, actually. So I’m going to have to talk to her.”

Monet, Blair St. Clair, Yuhua, and Eureka for 'Teen Vogue'
Monet, Blair St. Clair, Yuhua, and Eureka for 'Teen Vogue'

On last night’s episode of Untucked, Aquaria and The Vixen continued their feud, and the discussion of racism (especially among fans) came up. As a Chinese drag queen, Yuhua said she’s had her own share of experiences dealing with race.

“They’re not calling me names or anything,” she said about the fans. “But they keep comparing me to previous Drag Race contestants who are Asian.”

“That’s a little bit of racism,” she added. “We don’t look alike. My make up is completely different from Kim Chi. My makeup is completely different from Manila. But they’re still saying, ‘Oh, you remind me of her.’ I don’t see it other than the fact that we’re Asian. So that’s a little bit of the racist part in there.”

Yuhua Hamasaki

Despite being kicked off relatively early, Yuhua has the right attitude about what’s next for her.

“My place of elimination on the show does not determine my success,” she said. “My success is determined by how much I want to work — the amount of heart I’m willing to put in after the show knowing that I was given this amazing opportunity.”

But now that she’s gone, only 11 queens remain. It’s time for our weekly power rankings to try to guess who may be the next to go and who has the best chance of making it to the top.

11. Kameron Michaels

RuPaul's Drag Race Season 10 Kameron Michaels

Kameron’s look on the feather-themed runway was mesmerizing and her ability to transform from ripped muscle dude into a stunning queen is fun to watch. But her quiet personality has left her faded into the background and her attempt at acting during the challenge hinted at struggles to come. She doesn’t deserve to go home this early, but with such a strong cast, it’s hard to imagine it being anyone else.

10. The Vixen

RuPaul's Drag Race Season 10 The Vixen

The Vixen is serving producers all the drama they could have ever asked for. Unfortunately, it feels like the main reason that they’re keeping her around. Her drag looks have left quite a bit to be desired and the judges’ decision to crown her the winner during a “Best Drag” runway was questionable, at best. When her feud with Aquaria (and anyone else who dares cross her path this season) gets stale, her time on the show may quickly expire.

9. Aquaria

RuPaul's Drag Race Season 10 Aquaria

Aquaria is often the one to beat when it comes to serving fashion-forward looks on the runway, but she has yet to showcase any other major talents in the competition. She’s good enough at performing to get by, but as the pack thins out, her weaknesses will be much more exposed. Right now, most of her screen time is based on feuds with Vixen or Miz Cracker, and it’s never a good sign if that’s all you’re known for.

8. Dusty Ray Bottoms

RuPaul's Drag Race Season 10 Dusty Ray Bottoms

Dusty’s looks have been a little hit-or-miss so far, but the self-proclaimed punk queen is clearly talented when it comes to acting and performing. She shared a heartbreaking backstory this week about her parents taking her to get an exorcism as a little gay boy and the vulnerable moment only helped serve the underdog story that the producers seem to be placing her into. If she continues to grow, she may take that underdog edit all the way to the finish line. But there’s still a little work to do before she gets there.

7. Monique Heart

RuPaul's Drag Race Season 10 Monique Heart

Every week Monique is confused as to why she is only safe (or in the bottom, as was the case in Episode 2) and it’s honestly hard not to wonder the same thing. The queen delivered a flawless dress made of cards in the premiere’s thrift-store challenge and has been turning out looks ever since. But if the judges haven’t seen it yet, there’s a strong chance they never will. Pair that with a mediocre performance in the commercial parody and Monique may be quickly sliding down the ranking.

6. Eureka

RuPaul's Drag Race Season 10 Eureka O'Hara

After a giant stumble in Episode 2, the Elephant Queen is back this week, landing in the top three for her commercial performance and a killer evil-queen look on the runway. The judges commented that her performance worked because it was Eureka being herself, and it’s hard to deny that her personality is why fans are drawn to her. If she can stay out of her head and focus on delivering looks and laughs, she should be able to stick around for awhile.

5. Monét X Change

RuPaul's Drag Race Season 10 Money X Change

Monét consistently serves strong looks, delivers smart commentary, and is constantly used as a talking head between scenes. And yet, the queen has yet to land in the top so far this season. With a win or two under her belt, she should be able to sit comfortably in the top three position. But until that happens, she has to hover closer to the middle.

4. Mayhem Miller

RuPaul's Drag Race Season 10 Mayhem Miller

Winning the first challenge of the season placed Mayhem as the one to beat, but after a major stumble that landed her in the bottom this week, it was clear that she has her fair share of weaknesses. Her reasons for not speaking up about not liking the role she had basically boiled down to her being too nice, and that’s just not a quality that will get you the crown on Drag Race. Hopefully she gets her head in the game because it is a game and she’s a major contender. But the next time she gets a role she doesn’t like, she needs to learn to make the most of it instead of pouting and giving up if she wants to remain near the top of the pack.

3. Miz Cracker

RuPaul's Drag Race Season 10 Miz Cracker

After an insanely strong premiere episode, Cracker has not really been front and center. But just because she’s not been the focus of each episode doesn’t mean she’s not still killing it from the background. She’s one of the funniest queens of the season but puts just as much effort into her looks as she does into her jokes. As we start to lose queens, there will be more room to focus on Cracker and she will be ready to remind us why we loved her so much in Episode 1.

2. Blair St. Clair

RuPaul's Drag Race Season 10 Blair St. Clair

While we were busy focusing on big personalities and big drama, little Blair St. Clair snuck right into the top on every single episode of the season so far. Not bad for a 22-year-old ingenue from Indianapolis. Her workroom-entrance look led many to believe that Blair would be one of the first to go, but it’s clear that she may have been underestimated. She serves us great looks that stay true to her old-Hollywood brand and she’s able to keep up in acting challenges. Welcome to the top, Blair. We’ll be watching more closely from now on.

1. Asia O’Hara

RuPaul's Drag Race Season 10 Asia O'Hara

It sort of felt like we may have all been sleeping on Asia, but she finally got our attention by winning this week’s main challenge. Although she wasn’t necessarily the best actress of the group, the hideous faces she was making were hysterical and proved that she’s willing to go all the way for a laugh. Combine that with an amazing runway — which it should be noted, unless it’s 1994, it’s really not easy to pull off a Tweety Bird look — and Asia is no longer flying under the radar. Past queens have cited Asia as one of their drag inspirations and now the world is starting to see why. If she keeps playing like this, she should have no problem making it to the final three.

EXCLUSIVE: Mark Hamill On What a Luke Skywalker Spin-Off Would Look Like

This article contains spoilers for Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

In Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Luke Skywalker finally meets his maker. Or so it seems. What? We said there were spoilers. So how does it happen? Well, Luke over-exerts himself while projecting his image onto the planet Crait. His plan is to distract Kylo Ren in an effort to help Rey and her fellow band of Resistance fighters escape. Cut to Luke Skywalker’s physical form — which never left the island of Ahch-To — and we see his cape crumple to the rock beneath him as his earthly body dissipates.

A tweet to the Star Wars actor suggesting Luke’s mechanical hand would have clanked down on the rock if this meant he’d died caused Hamill to speculate that, instead, Skywalker actually teleported to a “planet of nudists”. While that’s something every Star Wars fan didn’t know they needed to see, Hamill expanded on a more plausible spin-off idea when chatting to FANDOM recently.

A Religious Leader

“There’s such an interesting period that they skipped over where he had a Jedi academy,” says Hamill. “Because you figure at the end of the last trilogy, what’s next for him?”

The Last Jedi continues straight on after the conclusion of The Force Awakens, which reintroduced Luke to the saga as a hermit living on a remote island. It picks up around 30 years after we last saw Luke reuniting with his father, Obi-Wan and Yoda in the form of Force ghosts at the end of Return of the Jedi.

For Hamill, the broad question of what’s next for Luke begets a series of more specific, probing questions that could be explored in a spin-off centering on this period of the character’s history.

“Does he become like the Pope of the Jedi religion? Is there anybody bigger?” he asks. “Maybe there is. Maybe he has to go and study in a monastery.”

Back to Tatooine

While we learned snippets about this interim period from the two films in the new sequel trilogy, there’s still plenty that hasn’t been broached that Hamill would like to see expanded upon.

“That’s the thing, George [Lucas] created a canvas that is so large, the possibilities are endless,” says Hamill. “I’d like [a spin-off] to focus on Luke helping younger people because they’re our future and you’d like to think that the best things, the positive things, that you learn from Star Wars are aspects like doing what’s right for the greater good, rather than thinking about what helps you. The selflessness involved, I like that. And I’d like to think that it has a positive influence on kids.”

Hamill thinks it would be difficult, though not impossible, to create another adventure for Luke on his home planet of Tatooine, with Luke around the same age as when we meet him in A New Hope.

“People say: ‘Do you think there could be a young Luke Skywalker Movie? I say: ‘There’s already been one. It’s called Star Wars,’” says Hamill. “Because [Luke] was a teenager. The whole point of the first one was he was bored silly on his planet so unless they were able to do a story where they cut to other stories and there’s things going on on his planet that he doesn’t know about, I don’t know how you’d really involve him without it reflecting in the first time you saw him. But, like I say, there’s so many possibilities and so many great writers out there, I’m sure they’ll come up with something.”

Young Luke Frontrunners

So who could play a younger Luke? Hamill ruminates on the qualities of both Bucky Barnes actor Sebastian Stan and young Room and Wonder star Jacob Tremblay.

“People say: ‘Oh, [Sebastian Stan] looks just like you, he looks like your son,’ and I think he’s said he’d love to play [Luke]. I hate to put my thumb on the scales and say he’s got my stamp of approval because I think he’s a wonderful actor, he could probably do anything, but I don’t want to prevent somebody who doesn’t have the notoriety of Sebastian to have his shot at it,” he says.

Stan-Tremblay
Sebastian Stan (left) and Jacob Tremblay (right) have the qualities to play a young Luke Skywalker.

“I also met Jacob Tremblay at The Book of Henry [premiere], and he’s a wonderful little boy and a big Star Wars fan. I just thought he had such composure beyond his years in his little suit. But it depends on what age you want to meet Luke. Because I guess Jacob is only 10 or 11, in that range. So I don’t know.”

He adds, “I wouldn’t presume to know. There’s probably unknowns. I certainly was unknown when I got to play him.”

First things first, though. Let’s just hope we’ll see more from Mark Hamill in the role when Episode IX hits screens next year.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is out on Blu-ray and DVD in the US on March 27 and available via Digital Download now. In the UK you can get your hands on the film on all formats from April 9.

Exclusive: There’s a Place For Charlie Hunnam in ‘Pacific Rim 3’

We’ve already covered why Charlie Hunnam — who played hero Raleigh Becket in the first Pacific Rim movie — isn’t returning for sequel Pacific Rim Uprising, with another movie seemingly responsible.

However, while speaking to Steven DeKnight — writer-director of the big-budget follow-up — FANDOM discovered that we might not have seen the last of Raleigh.

DeKnight kicked off the conversation by expressing his sadness that a scheduling conflict with Hunnam’s Papillon movie meant that the British actor couldn’t reprise the role in Part Two.

“I love Charlie Hunnam” he explained. “I sat down and talked with him about what we were planning and he was excited about it. I think it broke his heart not to be able to come back now. But a man’s got to follow his passion.”

However, with DeKnight hoping that the second movie makes enough money to get a third off the ground, it sounds like the character of Raleigh Becket is front and centre in his mind.

Idris Elba (l) with Charlie Hunnam in the first Pacific Rim movie.

“We’ve left it open” he revealed. “I have a great idea for how to fold him back into the next instalment if he’s available and if the schedules work. So I’m really hoping he comes back because I would love to see Charlie Hunnam up onscreen opposite John Boyega, Scott Eastwood and Cailee Spaeny.”

As for where the Becket character is while the events of Pacific Rim Uprising are unfolding, DeKnight wouldn’t spill the beans. “I cannot tell you” he explained with a knowing grin. “That’s part of the reveal of what happened to him. But I think it’s pretty cool.”

Pacific Rim Uprising — which finds a fresh set of Jaegers doing battle with a new team of Kaiju — hits screens this Friday (March 23). And you can find out all about those new battle-bots by clicking on the link below…

The R&B icon goes on to break down exactly how she knew Baby was ‘the one,’ after he came through for her during an intense health scare.

“The turning point for me was when I had a giant [lupus] flare, and I had obligated myself to go on tour. I was trying to still do it–even though I should’ve cancelled–and he told me, ‘I’m going to be out there with you just to make sure you’re OK.’”

Braxton continues, “How he treated me made me look at him different, like, Wow! That’s how the friendship kind of transitioned into what it is today.”

While the pair couldn’t be more in sync, the stunning songstress can’t help but notice the public’s perception of them.

“People see us and think we’re total opposites, and we are! We are OPPOSITES,” the mother of two admits. “Opposites attract, but he’s truly a gentleman, I mean he’s really a gentleman. People don’t know that about him.”
