What to Expect When You’re Expecting to Retire: 6 Ways to Do It Right

Bill Poznanski didn’t want to retire.

He worked for 35 years in the used car business in Toledo, Ohio, and he liked his job.

“My job was fun, and I could handle it physically,”  Poznanski says. “I had over 4,000 customers. My job was easy.”

But then an accident left his wife in need of a new hip. Taking time off to care for her after multiple operations and for trips to the doctors drained his vacation and sick days.

So early last year, at age 70 or 71 — “I forget exactly, because old people forget,” Poznanski says with a laugh — he gave his notice.

“They said if you ever want to come back, you’re more than welcome,” Poznanski says. “That hasn’t even crossed my mind. After I was retired for just a few months, I decided I should have retired a long time ago.

“I liked my job, but I like retirement even more.”

Whether you love your job or dream of the day you can dash from the building screaming “I’m outta heeeeere,” at some point in your career, you’ll need to consider retirement.

Yeah, first you have to figure out how to retire without going broke. The Penny Hoarder can help with that part, including calculating how much you’ll need to retire, staying on track financially to retire, choosing the right retirement accounts and avoiding financial slip-ups.

But once you clear the financial hurdles, there’s still the matter of preparing mentally and physically for retirement. Because if you’re like most people, you’ve been working for a while. Like, most-of-your-life a while.

Want to retire without looking back? Here are six tips you can use now to make the transition a happy one.

Retirement Tip #1: Make Plans Before You Retire

Before his last day on the job, Poznanski says he made decisions about what was important to him. Tops on the list: fishing.

“Way before I retired, I joined a local trout club,” Poznanski says. “You could go day or night, and I thought that would be fun, and it is.”

Poznanski found a place only a few minutes away from his house, thus avoiding the stress — and increased risk — of driving for half a day to find a spot at more congested fishing holes.

By researching places before he retired, Poznanski avoided the frustration and didn’t waste his money — unlike some of his fellow retirees.

I have a lot of friends who get frustrated because they have the money, but they’ve done some things they really didn’t enjoy because they didn’t know what to do,” he says.

Creating a routine is a key to a successful retirement, according to Julia Alexis, vice president of AARP Public Policy Institute, but that requires taking some time and effort to contemplate what you really want from retirement.

“It’s something people should anticipate and plan for,” Alexis says. “What brings you joy? What are some of the things you want to do as you start this next phase of your life?

“Think about the skills you brought to the workplace. How do you bring those skills to your community?”

Retirement Tip #2: Stay Social… or Get Social

Name someone you’ve hung out with in the past month who wasn’t a coworker.

If you’re having trouble remembering the names of any people who aren’t in your work sphere, you could be setting yourself up for more than just a lonely happy hour.

Socially isolated older adults are at greater risk for poor health, including depression, compared to their well-connected counterparts, according to a study published by the AARP Public Policy Institute. It found that social isolation results in medical conditions that cost an estimated $ 6.7 billion in additional Medicare spending annually.

Reconnecting with old friends is one way to create a network, especially with people from your age group who can relate to what it’s like during the early stages of retirement.

Poznanski says he convenes with former classmates regularly.

“We still get together every month on the third Wednesday for dinner, and we have 40 or 50 people show up,” Poznanski says. He points out that, while he appreciates his alone time, “that would get boring if I didn’t have my friends.”

And if you’re not in touch with your old friends, there are opportunities to make new ones through social organizations.

Groups like the Academy of Senior Professionals at Eckerd College, or ASPEC, in St. Petersburg, Florida, offer built-in social connections, says the organization’s director, Ken Wolfe.

The group, which has approximately 300 mostly retired members, offers four ways to participate — lifelong learning groups, community outreach, social events and mentoring and teaching opportunities at the college.

Sandy Tuite, formerly a registered nurse in Rochester, New York, says she and her husband Bob joined the organization in 2012 shortly after moving to St. Petersburg. Their interaction with students and faculty at the college has become an integral part of their busy social calendar.

“I have found I’m so active with ASPEC,” Sandy says. “I play golf three times a week; I’m in organizations with our association… We are just having a ball.

I am never bored,” says Sandy with a laugh, adding that she and Bob were planning their annual four-month trip back north for the summer. “I can’t wait to go and rest.”

Retirement Tip #3: Exercise Your Body

Depending on your job, you might have sat at a desk all day or, like Poznanski, were used to walking a used car lot.

Regardless of your job, after you retire there’s a greater likelihood that your lifestyle will become more sedentary, which is associated with increases in obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease, according to a 2018 study conducted in Finland.

Poznanski says he anticipated the drop-off in activity before he retired, so he bought a special kind of “exercise equipment.” One with four legs.

I decided that I need to get some exercise, so I bought a big, big dog,” Poznanski says. “He was a puppy when I bought him, but he’s 225 pounds now, and he’s exactly what I wanted. And we go walking an average of two miles every day.”

If you need a little more organized exercise routine, and a little less fur, you can find fitness challenges designed for seniors. One to consider is AARP’s Fit and Fun Challenge, which offers cheap and easy ways to start a fitness plan that keeps you accountable, according to Alexis.

“It’s really to get people to walk 30 minutes a day,” Alexis says. “If you can get someone to walk with you — like a buddy, a sister, a daughter, a mother — to motivate you and keep you accountable, you’re success rate is going to go up tremendously.

Retirement Tip #4: Exercise Your Brain

There’s a good chance you’ve taken on additional job responsibilities as you approach retirement. Whether you’re the vice president of your division or the veteran team member everyone goes to for advice, your brain gets a daily workout.

And although you may be looking forward to the relief from daily job stresses, using retirement as an excuse to veg out in front of the TV can have dire consequences for your health. A 2015 Italian study found that the more years a person spent in retirement, the higher the risk of cognitive decline associated with dementia.

Choosing to engage your brain can make the next part of your life as enriching as your previous work life, says Alexis.

“The first day you walk out of the office with your gold watch, it really is about the social network and also learning new things,” she says. “Make sure you’re working those muscles — your brain as much as exercising your body.

“It’s all about keeping refreshed. Learning a new language, reading different types of books, journaling or writing will really help you refresh.”

One option for stretching your neurons is to get that degree you never had time for when you were working every day. Check out where to find free college courses for senior citizens in this post.

And groups like ASPEC offer not only a social outlet but the intellectual stimulation that might be missing, according to Wolfe. Members pay dues to participate in programs that range from social hours to educational lectures to kayaking excursions.

“A lot of these people were bosses at one time or another — whether it’s an operating room or a corporation — and they’re having to adjust,” Wolfe says. “[Joining a social group] is not the total answer to retirement, but it does provide particularly that piece of intellectual stimulation that might be hard to find elsewhere.”

Retirement Tip #5: Consider a Slow Exit From Work

An older man smiles.
Gene Skluzacek attends the ASPEC social at Eckerd College. “When I retired, I did some tutoring and odd jobs like that for a couple years,” Skluzacek said. Tina Russell/The Penny Hoarder

Retirement doesn’t have to be an all-or-nothing proposition.

Cutting back to part-time or becoming a consultant can provide extra income along with connections and stimulation, says Gene Skluzacek, a retired physics professor who taught at the University of Nebraska Omaha until 1999 and at St. Petersburg College until 2004.

“When I retired, I did some tutoring and odd jobs like that for a couple years,” says Skluzacek, now ASPEC’s elected president. “When I first quit working full time, it took a while to adjust. I was surprised how important work seemed to be in my life. I took that as a negative — that my work was sort of defining me. And that’s not true anymore.”

In fact, retirement can offer the opportunity to pursue something you’re passionate about, including a money-making gig or a whole new career.

And even if you haven’t updated your resume since the Bush administration — no, the other one — that doesn’t mean you can’t market yourself for another career.

Brandy Huderson, assistant professor at the University of the District of Columbia, says that even in a workplace that seems to rely heavily on technology, retirees’ soft skills and experience are needed.

“We have this technological world, but we still need a support base,” Huderson says. “We’re always going to need some of those basic skills that a lot of the retirees have and that they can bring in and integrate into the company in a new way.

If there’s something you’re passionate about, there’s always an avenue for you to do it.

Retirement Tip #6: Volunteer Your Newfound Time

Volunteering can provide many of the same benefits a job gave your brain, but perhaps in a less stressful way, according to Alexis.

Volunteering almost engages your brain the way a job does — it helps you with interaction with others; it helps you coordinate plans; it helps you think about how to complete tasks on schedule,” she says. “It’s really much akin to a job but with some benefits of having some fun.”

Peter Kent says the transition from work life to retirement could have been particularly difficult for him as a recovering workaholic who still attends Workaholics Anonymous meetings every week via phone.

At 73 years old, Kent is still president of AptaMatrix Inc., a biotechnology company, although he says he’s retired from day-to-day duties. He credits his participation in ASPEC as a major reason he’s enjoying retirement and estimates he attends at least 10 events every week.

Being a part of ASPEC has even allowed him to discover a new talent: public speaking. He volunteers to lead a couple of discussions each week.

“My wife and my son always laugh about this because I was so shy that they cannot believe I get up in front of a group and talk,” Kent says. “I wouldn’t even have joined a group like this if I’d been expected to talk 10 years ago.”

What changed?

“I don’t know what happened,” Kent says. “It’s a highly intelligent group; it’s a lot of fun of talk to and it’s a lot of fun to get a conversation going with them.”

He says the social group has given him a new outlet to pour his energies into. He spends 10 to 20 hours preparing for his group presentations.

“I’m still working a 40-hour week — probably more — like seven days a week,” Kent says, adding in his volunteer work. “It’s fun. I always thought work was fun, but it’s a much more comfortable, more relaxed life.”

What’s Next

Preparing for retirement allows those leaving the workplace to see it as less of an end and more of a “what’s next,” according to Alexis.

“Retirement means different things to different people,” she says, noting that whatever a retiree’s interests, “it’s about learning new things, it’s contributing to the community and it’s staying engaged.”

‘Dragon Quest XI’ Isn’t The’ Breath Of The Wild’ Beater Many Were Expecting

When it comes to beloved game franchises in Japan, there are few series that inspire as much feverish devotion as Square Enix’s Dragon Quest. With kids and adults alike famously bunking off school to play each new highly-anticipated installment, its iconic Blue Slime mascot is a character that commands almost Mario-like levels of reverence in the land of the rising sun.

Hell, Square’s seminal RPG is even giving Disney a run for its money, with Dragon Quest soon getting its very own attraction at Universal Japan. Over here though? Well, that’s a very different story. Outside of fan circles, mentioning Dragon Quest in the West is more likely to elicit bemused shrugs than excited shrieks.  Now though, Square is hoping to change all that.

After a decade of being shackled to Nintendo handhelds, the publisher has opted to bring the series back to consoles. But is a newly-added HD sheen enough to finally win over Western audiences?

Dragon Quest Z

The game's characters were designed by legendary Dragon Ball creator, Akira Toriyama.

The first thing that might strike newcomers is how weirdly familiar all of Dragon Quest XI’s brilliantly drawn characters feel. Drawn by legendary Dragon Ball creator, Akira Toriyama, this cel-shaded world of monsters and adventurers immediately pops on screen, exuding a sense of warmth and playfulness that instantly sets it apart from its JRPG peers.

And make no mistake – despite the marketing hints otherwise, Dragon Quest XI is very much a traditional JRPG. While early trailers showcased a hero on horseback exploring sprawling landscapes, this definitely isn’t the Breath Of The Wild-beater that many hoped it would be.

For starters, the world players traverse is far from open. While you do get to trot along some pretty looking locales on the back of a trusty steed, these areas are essentially just fully-realised versions of the classic JRPG staple – the world map.

Archaic Adventuring?

Like the games that pioneered the genre two odd years ago, Dragon Quest XI once again sticks to the series’ tried and tested turn-based battles. Like in the classic Final Fantasy games, players are presented with your standard ‘attack’, ‘magic’ and item selections.

As genre veterans will expect, there is an alternative. If you want to grind for that juicy XP but don’t want to waste precious time selecting the same attacks, you can set your party to auto-battle, with a tactics menu allowing you to tweak which party member focuses on healing and who remains the aggressor.

Battles are about as traditional and simplistic as turn-based RPGS get.

It felt serviceable enough, but even when playing with a full party, battles were surprisingly simplistic. Without any summons or timed button presss attacks thrown into the mix, the combat here looks to be as basic as turn based battling gets.

While we’ve only spent a couple of hours with Dragon Quest XI, its combat felt disappointingly pedestrian after the free-roaming showdowns of Ni No Kuni II. What it lacks in innovation though, it at least makes up for in charm. Enemies are full of personality, with tear-drop shaped slime monsters gleefully bouncing around the battlefield before unleashing their equally adorable attacks. Whether it was animated cactai, angry-looking birds or slighty more furry foes, each enemy was always a joy to behold, with unique animations and facial expressions really making each one feel wonderfully distinct from what came before.

Leading the Charge

While there are some pretty stunning locales to explore, this is less an open world and more a slightly extended version of a traditional JRPG World Map.

Still, battling in Dragon Quest XI isn’t an entirely old-school affair… Or at least how you pick a fight isn’t anyway. In a nice touch, those endlessly irritating random battles are now a thing of the past. As you gallop across each monster-infested section of the world map, you’ll see your colourful-looking foes waddling along the battlefield in plain sight.

This means it’s up to you whether you want to bother engaging them, meaning that being dragged unwilling into combat is now a thing of the past. As well as choosing to ignore these foes, you can even opt to go one further and really ruin a monster’s day.

While galloping around the world map, squeezing the right trigger allows your horse to speed up and charge straight into unsuspecting little critters, instantly sending enemies flying and stunning them.

Tales of Traditionalia

Our two hours with DQXI featured more genre tropes than you can shake a potion at.

Story-wise, Dragon Quest XI looks to offer the same kind of genre tropes. A boy from a small village who discovers he’s important? Check. An evil King that wants to thwart the powerful hero? You bet. While the tale it looks to tell may be as traditional as they come, thankfully, Square Enix has opted to tweak it a bit for Western audiences.

Despite Dragon Quest XI launching last year in Japan without any voice acting, Square Enix has used that time to fully voice this story.

Like the Dragon Quest Heroes games before it, XI relies on a ye olde English voice cast to bring its anime-styled characters to life. It feels pretty bizarre to walk into a village and hear a farmer wax lyrical in a thick West Country accent. Still, it does add an undeniable sense of charm to what could have simply been walls of text.

Corrupt Kings and teenagers with dormant abilities are the order of the day here.

That’s not the only tweak Square has made for us Westerners. In order to speed traversal up a bit, players can now dash around town, with a newly added camera allowing players more control of movement and even allowing them to take snaps of their scenic surroundings.

Other little niggles have been ironed out in order to make the game feel more in line with modern experiences, with a newly simplified menu and cleaner UI thrown in for good measure. If that wasn’t enough to justify a year of waiting, Square has also rewarded patient fans with an all new hard difficulty setting – Draconian Mode.

How’s Dragon Quest XI Shaping Up?

For longtime fans of the series, more expansive environments and a shiny new HD paintjob will probably be more than enough to justify a purchase. Yet, for newcomers, what we’ve seen so far makes this a harder game to recommend. Where Dragon Quest Builders showed Square steering the series into fun new territory,  what we saw of the series’ eleventh entry looked surprisingly old hat.

While there’s certainly nothing wrong with a nostalgia-soaked JRPG, its hard to imagine Dragon Quest XI being the entry to finally break the West. From what we played, it looks like there’s definitely an enjoyable RPG here, but those looking for a more forward-thinking Japanese adventure may want to stick with Ni No Kuni II.

Expecting Class-Action Cash for Cruise Line Robocalls? You Must Read This

Sail away, sail away, sail—

Not so fast, captain.

That cruise line class-action settlement we told you about last year just got a little more complicated.

Originally, if you received an unsolicited robocall between July 2009 and March 2014 offering you a free cruise, you may have been eligible to receive up to $ 900 as part of a class-action settlement against Resort Marketing Group, the company accused of violating the Telephone Consumer Protection Act.

Turns out, more than 2.6 million people filed claims, causing concerns about fraud — oh, the irony.

The flood of claims meant that the $ 7 million to $ 12.5 million settlement fund would dwindle to a few dollars each for claimants, nowhere close to the $ 900 maximum previously established.

Now, claimants are being asked to complete one more step before receiving their class-action cut.

How to Get Your Slice of the Cruise Line Class-Action Pie

If you submitted a claim before the Nov. 3, 2017, deadline, you still need to submit additional documentation to prove you actually received one of those annoying robocalls peddling a free cruise.

You should have already received an email notice from Charvat v. Resort Marketing Group if you filed a claim last year. However, many of the notices bounced, so claimants may not be aware they have to complete one more step.

The notice asks claimants to submit documentation, like a phone bill or page from a phone directory, that ties them to their number during the July 2009 to March 2014 time frame.

Visit the settlement website for notices, details on documentation and questions.

Documentation submissions can be emailed to administrator@rmgtcpasettlement.com or uploaded to the settlement website.

Let’s just hope you’re a paper or phone book hoarder or can access your 2009 to 2014 phone bills, or maybe you have an old internet or cable bill with your digits on it.

The upside is if you happen to have the paperwork, you may get a bigger chunk of the settlement fund; but if you don’t, you may be left class-actionless.

This Time It’s Real: Tyrese And His Wife Expecting A Baby Girl

If you remember, during his full-fledged breakdown last year, Tyrese ranted about his wife being pregnant. Turns out, it wasn’t true. But now, Tyrese and his wife, Samantha Gibson, are expecting after a year of marriage. The couple told their story to People.com.

People.com reports:

“Both of our love and energy and magic and families are bonded forever because we’re going to have this child,” Gibson, 39, raved in a joint interview with his spouse. “It’s unbelievable.”

Instagram Photo

Samantha, a 29-year-old social worker, learned she was pregnant with their daughter in late January, not long after they began trying to conceive. Minutes after her positive first test — and before she could even plan out a surprise for her husband — Gibson arrived home, and they celebrated together.

“It was me screaming and just being overly excited and just fired up about the news,” he says.

Friends and family were equally enthusiastic. Samantha and Gibson spread the news with help from a faux movie trailer, which Tyrese narrated, that transitioned partway through into footage from Samantha’s ultrasound.

“There was no greater reaction than her mom’s reaction,” Gibson says of his wife. “Samantha is her only daughter, and this has been prayers for years and years, for her to get married and find the right one and start a family.”

Instagram Photo

Now in her second trimester, with their baby due in September, Samantha says she’s been in “full practicing mode” with 10-year-old stepdaughter Shayla, “[whom] I consider mine.”

And the spouses don’t expect any sibling rivalry. According to Samantha, Shayla’s “been asking for siblings since I’ve known her.”

Though Samantha plans to give birth in Los Angeles, where they also have a home, they will raise their new daughter primarily in Georgia, in the same house where they wed last February.

“We were able to conceive at the right time, I believe,” Samantha says. “There was a lot that happened last year — everyone is aware of that — and so to have the opportunity to … really start a new chapter in the way that has happened, I just look to God and I’m like, ‘Wow, I can’t believe that you would plan it this way and you do it so perfectly.’

ENTERTAINMENT UPDATE:

This is What Expecting Parents Need to Know About Toys R Us Baby Registries

It’s not just generations of Toys R Us kids who are bummed about the retailer’s upcoming closure of more than 800 stores.

Expectant parents are now realizing their baby registries are kaput.

As Toys R Us and Babies R Us stores around the country prepare to liquidate, people are rushing to adjust their methods of requesting baby registry gifts from family and friends.

Melissa Orseno of St. Petersburg, Florida, suspected something was wrong with her Babies R Us registry several weeks before Toys R Us announced its bankruptcy filing.

She spent three hours in the store scanning items she wanted. But she kept noticing things were being discontinued in the weeks to follow.

Then last weekend, shortly after Toys R Us announced it would close all its stores, Orseno logged back into her registry. Every single clothing item was out of stock. She checked again later; the diapers were out of stock, too.

Current Babies R Us registry holders may access their registries, but a press office email autoresponder noted, “We encourage you to save or write down the products on your registry as soon as possible so you will have a list of those products you wanted before the registry is turned off.”

While the store stated that new registries could not be created, the option to do so is still available on the retailer’s homepage.

Orseno said she hasn’t received any notification from Babies R Us about the status of her registry. In the meantime, she’s transferred everything over to Buybuy Baby and told upcoming baby shower guests — she’s due in June — that she’s moved her wish list.

New Parents Must Seek Registry Rewards Elsewhere

Shopping at Toys R Us and Babies R Us came with perks.

The “R”Us rewards program offered one point for each dollar spent at Toys R Us and Babies R Us stores. After earning 125 points, participants received a $ 5 reward coupon.

The chain’s press office noted that rewards coupons are no longer valid as of March 22; users may see points accruing in their account, although they’re not valid.

Meanwhile, Babies R Us shoppers could earn 10% back on purchases made through their registries. New parents automatically received an electronic gift card about 12 weeks after their baby’s due date.

Endless Earnings e-gift cards will be accepted through April 21. Orseno suspects she’ll never see the $ 124 she had already earned. She said the rewards program, along with store availability, had made Babies R Us the best choice for her.

Affected stores are notifying customers who have items on layaway, letting them know they have 21 days to pay the balance or get a refund on their deposits.

“If the customers don’t take any action, the liquidators will have the right to sell the product as part of the liquidation after the 21 day notice period,” the email stated.

Gift cards for both stores will be honored through April 21, but all purchases made during the liquidation process beginning March 23 are final sale.

Parents have several alternatives. Buybuy Baby is offering free pacifiers to those who transfer their registries to the store, which is a part of the Bed Bath & Beyond family. The Washington Post also noted that online registry hub Babylist is offering a $ 10 credit to those choosing their next best option.

Target, Walmart and Amazon also offer baby registries.

Orseno said that while BuyBuy Baby’s prices are slightly higher than Babies R Us, its registry is “so much easier to use. It’s fast,” she said, “and it provides a list for thank-you notes.” She said deliveries from Babies R Us had taken weeks to arrive.

After Kylie Jenner announced the birth of her first child, we had to make up for lost time. There’s so much to catch up on! We missed out on nine months of pregnancy updates, cravings, baby shower gifts, and baby bump pictures. Fortunately, Kylie is making our job easy. She made a YouTube video about her pregnancy so we could catch up on what we missed. Now that Kylie and Travis Scott’s little bundle of joy is here, she seems ready to share more about her journey to motherhood with us. And she’s getting right to it. On Tuesday, February 6th, Kylie shared the first photo of her baby on Instagram. Kylie also shared her baby’s name: Stormi. The picture’s original caption simply read “stormi” with a smiling baby emoji. But she later updated it to include Stormi’s last name: “stormi webster.”

You might be wondering, Whose last name is Webster? And the answer is Travis Scott’s. Yep, Travis Scott’s real name is Jacques Webster. Many wondered if Stormi would take Kylie’s last name and go by Stormi Jenner. As far as we know, Kylie and Travis have no plans to get married at the moment. But Stormi’s last name is Webster, just like her father’s.

Introducing: Stormi Webster!

stormi webster 👼🏽

A post shared by Kylie (@kyliejenner) on

We’re pretty sure that she’s going to go by “Stormi Webster” and not “stormi webster.” But hey, you never know. The Kardashian/Jenner fam is famous for their naming conventions. Maybe giving kids all-lowercase names is the trend of the next generation of Jenners.

The name Stormi Scott would be pretty cute. But Stormi Webster has a beautiful ring to it too.

Welcome to the world, Stormi Webster! Now, how long until there’s a Kylie Cosmetics “Stormi” shade? Fingers crossed she’ll bless us with an entire “Stormi” collection!

Eva Marcille Is Pregnant, Expecting Baby Boy with Boyfriend Michael Sterling: ‘It Was Very Unexpected’

Eva Marcille’s 2017 keeps getting better.

After it was announced earlier this year that she joined the cast of Bravo’s ‘The Real Housewives of Atlanta,’ Eva has announced she’s expecting her second child — a boy!

Her new bundle of joy will be her first child with boyfriend Michael Sterling. Eva has a daughter, 3-year-old Marley, with ex-boyfriend Kevin McCall.

via People:

“I said, ‘Marley, would you like to have a little brother or sister?’ And she said, ‘Yes, Mom, but you know what? Maybe a baby brother. Make it a brother,’ ” the 33-year-old mom-to-be recalls of the sweet conversation between herself and her little girl.

“I thought that was adorable, but at the time, I had no idea what I was having, so my fear [about] this extremely expressive and outgoing young girl [was] if this baby came out to be a little girl, that might not be a great situation for Marley,” adds Marcille with a laugh.

“However, I found out soon after that I was having a boy, and I felt like she willed it in her favor. I’m beyond elated to be having a boy.”

Marcille tells PEOPLE the baby news was “kind of a surprise” to her.

“My body felt super weird. I didn’t know what was going on,” she says. “I went to the doctor and because of my symptoms, he decided to do an ultrasound to see if I had any cysts or tumors or fibroids or things of that nature.”

“He did an ultrasound and lo and behold, we were seven and a half weeks pregnant,” Marcille continues. “I was like, ‘What?!’ I was expecting the worst only to find out I was carrying a life. It was crazy.”

And her reaction upon finding out? “I was shocked and terrified all at the same time,” she admits. “It was not planned — it was very unexpected, and [Michael] was in the middle of this mayoral campaign where being pregnant was not a part of the agenda.”

Opposites attract for the star and her beau, whom Marcille describes to PEOPLE as “an extremely even-keeled guy” who could “be in the middle of Y2K and still would not be excited at all” — as opposed to her own personality (“I emote for everything”).

So while it took a little while for Sterling to process the news, he was eventually overjoyed. “When I initially told him, he was like, ‘Oh, okay,’ and I could tell he was surprised and didn’t want to overreact or react in a way that he would regret or that would scare me,” she explains.

“A few days later, like the lawyer he is, he took an opportunity to assess the situation and think it through and analyze,” Marcille continues. “We talked about it again, and he was excited. Which was a huge relief to me — excitement is what we want.”

Marcille recalls her first-trimester morning sickness and tells PEOPLE her current big cravings are apples and pickles, even on the go.

And the couple already have a name picked out — though it wasn’t of Marcille’s choosing. “I was thinking about naming him after my grandfather, whose name is Major,” she says, noting that her daughter was named for Bob Marley. “It’s a way to keep his name and his spirit alive and bring it into our family.”

But the dad-to-be is getting his mini-me this time around: Michael Todd Sterling Jr. “Also known as Mikey — that’s what Marley calls him,” says Marcille of her son on the way. “We have a junior, which is kind of terrifying to me because Michael is the most ambitious person I’ve ever met.”

“So for our son to now have to live up to his dad, it lets me know that there is a great promise on his life, but it’s also terrifying because he has so much to live up to,” she continues.

Congrats to Eva and Michael!

Another One?! Kourtney Kardashian Is Reportedly Pregnant and Expecting with a Child with Boyfriend Younes Bendjima

It looks like Kourtney Kardashian has joined sisters Kylie Jenner, Khloé Kardashian, and Kim Kardashian in the expectant mothers club.

Life and Style is reporting that Kourtney is expecting her fourth child — but not with Scott Disick. The father of Kourtney’s alleged baby is current boyfriend, 24-year-old Younes Bendjima.

via Life and Style:

“She was thrilled to learn she was expecting,” a source told Life & Style exclusively. However, for now, Kourtney and her boyfriend of one year Younes Bendjima are only telling close family and friends. “She loves being part of a large family and having so many siblings,” the insider adds, “and she wants the same for Penelope, Mason, and Reign.”

Kourtney, 38, has made it very clear she wanted more kids — even after her split from longtime boyfriend Scott Disick. “I would have more. I could see myself with six kids,” Kourtney told Cosmopolitan magazine. “I just don’t know what’s in God’s plan.” She does know that Younes, 24, is the perfect dad-to-be.

“She needs a man who will be both present and sober,” the source explained. “With his charming personality and intelligence, Younes will make the perfect father.” However, it doesn’t look like Scott, 34, is happy about her new relationship. Life & Style previously reported that Scott was trying to ruin Kourt’s relationship with the young model.

“Scott will do anything to sabotage Kourtney’s relationship, including showing up wherever Kourtney and Younes are hanging out together,” the source said. “He’s also been asking around, trying to get some dirt on Younes so he can bring it back to Kourt and persuade her to dump him.” It doesn’t seem Kourtney is too concerned about her ex after she recently made her romance with Younes Instagram official on a couple’s vacation to Paris.

If true, then we’ve officially reached a point where keeping up with the Kardashians is proving too much!

Alongside a photo of Lauren holding her burgeoning baby bump, he wrote: “Hey everyone. Look what I did. Words can’t express how excited I am that this little one has entered our lives. Just thought it was time I would share this beautiful news with all of you.”
Meanwhile, Aaron previously revealed he considers being at home to be like a vacation and gushed about he and his wife’s mutual appreciation of music, which helped bring them together.
He shared: “Any chance I have to be at my house, I take it. I’m never at home, I’m always travelling. I never work in Los Angeles. Being at home really is a vacation for me and my wife.
“Music is our obsession. I fell in love with my wife at a music festival. We have concerts inside our living room. Whenever we’re in town, we track down artists playing in Los Angeles and just reach out to their tour manager and see if they’d like to play our living room.”

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are expecting a baby girl

Here’s all we know so far…

Matt Baron/BEI/Shutterstock

It was announced earlier this year that Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are expecting their third child via a surrogate, with the new arrival expected in January.

The couple already share four-year-old daughter North and son Saint who is almost two, however due to Kim suffering from placenta accreta, another pregnancy would be considered life-threatening, leading the couple to use a surrogate for their third child.

Placenta accreta occurs when blood vessels grow too deep into the uterine wall which makes the placenta able to invade those muscles and grow through the wall.

The latest news relating to the Kardashian-West surrogacy has been revealed by TMZ, who announced this week that the couple were expecting a baby girl.

The site also revealed details about the surrogate, who according to reports is being paid $ 113,000 for carrying the Kardashian-West baby. According to TMZ the surrogate is an African-American women in her twenties, who has already given birth to her two sons with her husband of five years.

The pair are apparently required to deposit around $ 68,000 to the agency and are said to pay in monthly instalments. The contract will require the surrogate to refrain from any alcohol or drug consumption throughout the pregnancy and also abstain from sex leading up to the pregnancy, with TMZ reporting she is also banned from using hot tubs, hair dye or eating raw fish.

This all comes after Kim has openly talked about wanting more children – even undergoing surgery to try to repair the hole in her uterus – and she even asked her younger sister, Khloe, if she would consider being her surrogate, for her.

Kim had even said on the show: ‘I think that I always knew that surrogacy was an option but I didn’t think it was that realistic of an option. Now I feel like that’s my reality. I feel like surrogacy is really the only other option for me.’

Karlie Kloss In Yellowface And Expecting More From Our Allies

In the past five years, grassroots activism has defined citizen unrest and resistance towards government, politicians, and the police. The Trump presidency era adds a layer of political and activist urgency, ensuring that every part of culture become political. It seems that brands, Hollywood institutions, and other previously apolitical institutions are now part of a national dialogue about race, inequality, and marginalization.

One of the most visible advocates for visibility, particularly for girls and women in tech is Karlie Kloss, a supermodel and self-proclaimed techy with “nerdy passions.” Her brand as a liaison and entrepreneur who seamlessly lives and breathes the culture of tech and fashion has expanded to include partnerships that promote women who innovate with Elle UK, Flatiron School, and more.

To the shock of many (and not so much to others), Kloss recently came under fire for posing in Yellowface in Vogue’s Diversity issue. In the photo series, Kloss poses in traditional Japanese kimonos, bath houses, and scenery, while the few Asian actors in the shoot (in the form of a sumo wrestler and a server) serve as props to highlight and celebrate Kloss’s figure as a celebration of Japanese culture.

Cultural appropriation disguised under the clichéd catch-all phrase of “diversity” has a long standing history in this country. It is bigger than the Yellowface we see in the forthcoming Vogue issue. It is part of a greater conversation that needs to be had about white women and white culture taking wrongful ownership of women of color’s past and current sorrows, celebrations, and victories. Even Kloss’s personal brand push to be the face of the women and girls in tech movement and being the poster child for opportunity and accessibility is one that is not rightfully hers. By promoting herself as a champion of the girls in tech movement, she wrongfully capitalizes and owns the accomplishments of girls and women who faced insurmountable hurdles to achieve in a male-dominated field.

Kloss’s latest gaffe in Vogue’s issue highlights one of the biggest Catch-22s in cultural and civil rights movements, like the one our country is currently experiencing: white allies who take part of a movement that demands equal representation and respected existence of people of color and marginalized communities. Allies who demand space in discourse and dialogue, but are unwilling to be held accountable towards their own actions that fuel and stand with the same institutions and historical culture of repression. The series of Women’s Marches across the nation sparked dialogues on white feminism and speculations about the motivations behind a March that demanded marchers be “women first.”

It is critical that allies do a better job in understanding the differences between what it means to be an ally who understands the struggles and victories of minorities without robbing groups of their cultures, victories and struggles.

This type of pressure to unite as a singular identity echoes the same appropriative dialogue used during the Women’s Suffrage movement in both the USA and the UK. Philosophy Professor Elizabeth Spelman notes in her 1997 book Fruits of Sorrow: Framing Our Attention to Suffering, that phrases such as “women and minorities” overshadow and remove the identity and experiences of minority women and take these experiences to work towards the motivations of white women. Spelman asks her readers, “Consider the talk about women being treated like slaves. Whenever we talk that way we are not only making clear that the ‘women’ we’re referring to aren’t themselves slaves; we’re making it impossible to talk about how the women who weren’t slaves treated those who were.” Spelman implores us to critically examine the politics of the words we use to describe our experiences. The wording and metaphors we use have the potential to not only silence the underrepresented and disenfranchised, but also removes accountability from the relationship that the “women” being referenced have with the oppressed and underrepresented.

It is critical that allies do a better job in understanding the differences between what it means to be an ally who understands the struggles and victories of minorities and people of color without overstepping and robbing groups of their cultures, victories, and struggles. The very fact that the Vogue and Kloss teams came to the conclusion that having a white woman representing Japanese culture in its diversity issue shows that mainstream media still struggles in its role as an ally. Within hours of the photos being released, Kloss issued an apology for participating in the Vogue photoshoot that appropriated Japanese culture.

However, as several days have passed since the controversy, Vogue has still yet to release an apology, making it clear that diversity, not inclusivity, is a priority simply in its potential to profit and erase centuries of oppression and silenced voices. Vogue’s silence further fuels a long standing history of fashion and its reluctance to open doors and make room for stories that demand conversations about its relationship to people of color, minority women, LGBTQ, immigrant, and all underrepresented communities. As the country continues to mobilize and people of all backgrounds stand up, resist, and define themselves as allies of marginalized communities, it will be all the more critical for everyone to critically examine what it means to be an ally without silencing the individuals that dared to demand more for their communities, children, and future.

Stop Expecting Your Life to Be Like a Television Show

What is a hard thing to do in life? originally appeared on Quorathe knowledge sharing network where compelling questions are answered by people with unique insights.

Answer by Matthew Manning, on Quora:

What is a hard thing to do in life? Understanding that your life is not a television show.

One of the hardest things to understand about my life has been the fact that it is not episodic. That is to say, most of the time life is not full of “important stuff.” My life isn’t a television show. It is mostly the stuff that happens between each episode.

Most of the time, important stuff happens when you least expect it, and when you’re barely ready for it. The majority of your time will be spent between the important stuff. This includes:

  • Doing laundry.
  • Folding laundry.
  • Grocery shopping.
  • Paying bills.
  • Picking small crumbs up from your floor so as to delay vacuuming.

This is difficult to swallow as you get older and cease to be ushered from event to event and hand-delivered meaningful experiences. Most of the time, we’re doing what has to be done in order to better position ourselves for what we wish to do.

If this sounds like drudgery, that’s because it is. There are some pretty salient myths about the joy of daily life, and I think we are lead to believe that a happy life is one filled each day with intrigue and adventure. We are not the Great Gatsby. Most of my day is a grind – and I actually enjoy my job.

If you can’t be happy with the things in front of you, no great plot line is going to save you from that.

And if you figure out how to do that, tell me how.
