‘The Wire’ Star Wood Harris Won’t Face Charges for Allegedly Beating His Girlfriend

Wood Harris, known for his role as Avon Barksdale on the hit HBO series “The Wire,” — won’t face any criminal charges after allegedly beating his girlfriend.

She is now threatening further legal action.

via TMZ:

The alleged incident went down back in April in Philly, when Harris’ gf of 2 years, Anya Richardson, claimed he flew into a violent rage that landed her in the hospital.

According to a police report, obtained by TMZ, Richardson claimed he struck her multiple times in the stomach, neck and ribs. Richardson also alleged he spat on her face and choked her.

We reached out to Richardson, who tells TMZ … Harris invited her to Philly where he was shooting “Creed II.” She tells us they were in his hotel room when the unprovoked attack allegedly went down.

She says she went to the hospital the next day and reported the incident to police the day after her hospital visit. We spoke to a rep for the Philadelphia D.A.’s Office who tells us … they could not prove beyond a reasonable doubt a crime had occurred, so they declined to prosecute.

Richardson’s attorney, Alberto Ebanks, tells TMZ … his client “feels there is little choice but to pursue alternative remedies to help protect other women from the threat of assault.”

A rep for Harris tells TMZ … “The account by this woman is pure fabrication. Wood was never questioned by the authorities and that should speak to the authenticity of the accusation. No further comment.”

When will people learn to keep their hands to themselves?

Tiffany Haddish Gets All Ugly Face Over Tyler Perry During Laugh Factory Routine [Video]

According to Anita Bennett’s UrbanHollywood411, funny woman Tiffany Haddish not only brought the house down Saturday night at the Laugh Factory in Los Angeles with laughter, but ended up breaking down in tears herself.

During her set at the famous Sunset Strip comedy club, Haddish joked about being thrifty, taking a sabbatical from sex, receiving a car from Tyler Perry and being gifted the wardrobe from her upcoming film, Night School, with Kevin Hart.

Haddish warned fans they’ll see the outfits over and over, because she believes in recycling.

She also joked about her role in Perry’s upcoming comedy, Nobody’s Fool. She said the director’s rapid-fire production method caught her off guard.

“We shot that whole movie in ten days. I don’t know if it’s gone be any good,” she said to laughter.

“I don’t know if this sh–’s gone be funny. I don’t know what the continuity is gonna look like,” she joked. “I don’t know if in one scene, I’m gonna have three hairdos. I don’t know.”

Then someone in the audience yelled, “Tell us about the car!”

Thai Boys Trapped In Cave Found Alive But Face Difficult Rescue

(Tham Luang Rescue Operation Center via AP)

MAE SAI, Thailand (AP) — Heavy rains forecast for northern Thailand could worsen flooding in a cave where 12 boys and their soccer coach are waiting to be extracted by rescuers, possibly forcing authorities to have them swim out through a narrow, underwater passage in the cavern, a top official said Tuesday.

The 13, who disappeared when flooding trapped them in the cave they were exploring on June 23 after a soccer game, were found by rescue divers late Monday night in the cavern in northern Chiang Rai province during a desperate search. The effort drew international help and has riveted Thailand.

The boys, aged 11-16, and their 25-year-old coach were described as healthy and being looked after by seven members of the Thai navy SEALs, including medics, who were staying with them inside the cave. They were mostly in stable condition and have received high-protein drinks.

While efforts to pump out floodwaters are continuing, it’s clear that some areas of the sprawling cavern cannot be drained, said Interior Minister Anupong Paojinda, a member of Thailand’s ruling military junta. In order to get them out ahead of the bad weather forecast for later in the week, they might need to use diving gear while being guided by professional divers, he said.

Anupong said the boys would be brought out via the same complicated route through which their rescuers entered, and he conceded that if something went awry, it could be disastrous.

“Diving is not easy. For people who have never done it, it will be difficult, unlike diving in a swimming pool, because the cave’s features have small channels,” he said. “If something happens midway, it could be life-threatening.”

Video released by the Thai navy showed the boys in their soccer uniforms sitting in a dry area inside the Tham Luang Nang Non cave above the water as a light held by a rescuer was shone on their faces.

Cave rescue experts have said it could be safer to simply supply them where they are for now, rather than trying to have the boys dive out. That could take months, however, given that Thailand’s rainy season typically lasts through October.

SEAL commander Rear Adm. Arpakorn Yookongkaew said there was no rush to bring them out, since they’re safe where they are.

A doctor and a nurse were with them in the cave.

“We have given the boys food, starting from easily digested and high-powered food with enough minerals,” Arpakorn told a news conference.

Having them dive out of the cave was one of several options being considered, “but if we are using this plan, we have to be certain that it will work and have to have a drill to make sure that it’s 100 percent safe,” he said.

Chiang Rai provincial Gov. Narongsak Osatanakorn said the health of the boys and coach were checked using a field assessment in which red is critical condition, yellow is serious and green is stable.

“We found that most of the boys are in green condition,” he said. “Maybe some of the boys have injuries or light injuries and would be categorized as yellow condition. But no one is in red condition.”

Relatives keeping vigil at the mouth of the cave since the ordeal began rejoiced at the news that their boys and their coach had been found.

“I want to give him a hug. I miss him very much,” said Tham Chanthawong, an aunt of the coach. “In these 10 days, how many million seconds have there been? I’ve missed him every second.”

Rescue divers had spent much of Monday making preparations for a final push to locate them, efforts that had been hampered by flooding that made it difficult to move through the tight passageways of muddy water.

Rick Stanton and John Volanthen, two expert cave divers from Britain, found the group about 300-400 meters (yards) past a section of the cave on higher ground that was believed to be where they might have taken shelter.

In the 5-minute navy video, the boys were seen wearing their soccer uniforms and were calm, curious and polite. They also were keen to get some food.

After an initial exchange in which a rescuer determines that all 13 are present, one of the boys asked what day it was, and a rescuer replied: “Monday. Monday. You have been here — 10 days.”

The rescuer told them “you are very strong.” The traditional reserve of Thai children toward adults broke slightly after a while, and one boy told another in Thai, “Tell them we are hungry.”

“We haven’t eaten,” a boy said in Thai, then in English: “We have to eat, eat, eat!”

A rescuer assured them that “navy SEALs will come tomorrow, with food and doctors and everything.” At the end of the video, a boy asked in English, “Where do you come from?” The rescue diver replied, “England, UK.”

Besides the protein drink, Narongsak said they were given painkillers and antibiotics, which doctors had advised as a precaution.

He said officials had met and agreed on the need to “ensure 100 percent safety for the boys when we bring them out.”

“We worked so hard to find them and we will not lose them,” he said.

Cave diver Ben Reymenants, part of the team assisting the rescue effort, told NBC’s “Today” show that he was “very surprised obviously that they are all alive and actually mentally also healthy.”

While they appear responsive, “they are very weak and very skinny,” he added.

Reymenants said the easiest option would be to “keep pumping the water out of the cave. They need another 3 or 4 feet so they can literally float them out with life jackets.”

“But time is not on their side,” he noted, because of the heavy rain forecast.

He added that two Thai navy doctors have volunteered to stay with them for months, if needed.

The British Cave Rescue Council, which has members taking part in the operation , said in a statement that “although water levels have dropped, the diving conditions remain difficult and any attempt to dive the boys and their coach out will not be taken lightly because there are significant technical challenges and risks to consider.”

Joining the British are other experts from around the world and teams from the U.S., Australia, China and elsewhere.

Authorities said efforts would continue outside the cave, where teams have been scouring the mountainside for other entrances to the caverns. Several fissures have been found and teams have explored some, although so far, none lead to the trapped boys.

‘Bath Time!’ Chrissy Teigen Shares Adorable Video of Daughter Luna Covering Her Face in Bubbles

Chrissy Teigen‘s daughter certainly is a water baby!

Luna, 2, had fun during her bath time on Thursday night as she bathed alongside her mother, 32.

🛁,” Teigen wrote for the simple caption of a video of their water-filled adventure on Instagram.

The model couldn’t help but laugh in the video as Luna grabbed a handful of bubbles in her hands and wiped them off on Teigen’s face.

Before their dip in the black marble tub, Teigen shared a video of her daughter carrying a yellow tub of toys, which included a big rubber, yellow duck and the caption, “Bath Time!”

“Put your stuff in there!” Teigen told Luna as the little girl bent over her crate and tossed the duck inside of the bath tub.

The mom of two welcomed her second child, son Miles Theodore on May 16, with husband John Legend. Earlier this week, Teigen shared a sweet photo of her baby boy lounging on a yellow giraffe print pillow in a coordinating giraffe patterned onesie.

“Hey dudes,” Teigen captioned the photo.

The model conceived her two children through IVF, a process she told one fan in the comments section she was “all for talking about.”

“I know IVF was used for Luna was it used for baby brother also?” The follower asked her. Though other followers criticized that fan for the personal inquiry, Teigen did not shy away from talking about the process.

“I wasn’t offended by it — people are just curious and I think hearing success stories gives people hope. I’m all for talking about IVF,” the Lip Sync Battle star replied.

Teigen has been candid in the past about her and Legend’s struggle to conceive, even getting fielded with nonstop questions about starting a family since they got married in September 2013.

RELATED VIDEO: Chrissy Teigen and John Legend Share Their Son’s Name and Introduce Him in Adorable First Photo

The model previously told PEOPLE in February that she chose to undergo IVF again more than two years after choosing to implant a female embryo that resulted in the pregnancy with Luna.

“You do the whole process again to try to get as many embryos and eggs as possible,” Teigen explained of the artificial insemination. “Everyone is freezing everything. … For me, I just want to gather as many as possible. I don’t want to do this again for the rest of my life.”

In January, Teigen confirmed that she and Legend conceived Miles through IVF after she previously said “a little boy is next.”

Jamie Foxx Accused Of Slapping Girl In The Face With His Penis At A 2002 Party

Premiere Of Open Road Films' 'Sleepless' - Arrivals

Source: Paul Archuleta / Getty

Actor Jamie Foxx is being accused of slapping a girl in the face with his genitals at a party dating back to 2002, TMZ reports.

While Foxx’s camp is dismissing the claim as a lie, the accuser told law enforcement last week that she was at a party with a friend at Foxx’s home when the now 50-year-old tried to get her to perform oral sex on him. The alleged victim said when she refused, Jamie hit her on the face with his penis.

The accuser told the site that after the incident one of Jamie’s friend’s kicked her out of the home. When she returned to LA the next day, she said she was treated for a severe panic attack.

This claim comes amid a string of accusations against Hollywood A-listers in the sweeping #TimesUp movement including Morgan Freeman, Bill Cosby and Harvey Weinstein.

Google could face yet another multi-billion-dollar fine in Europe, this one for Android

Android Antitrust Fine

About a year ago, Google received a massive antitrust fine in Europe for abusing its search dominance. The EU decided Google should pay €2.42 billion for its transgressions or about $ 2.7 billion. That was more than double what Intel got a few years before that.

To celebrate the one-year anniversary of that fine, the EU is about to deliver a new multi-billion dollar blow to Google, and this time around it might be a more significant one, because it’s about Android.

5 Pieces of Money Advice for Young Adults About to Face the Real World

Spring is in sight, and right about now, you’ll see that anxious look on the faces of college seniors and other young adults about to face the real world for the first time. Even if they’re fortunate enough to have a job lined up, they are far from secure financially, and often have no idea how to handle their finances.

If this is you or someone you know, adopting these financial habits now will take the stress out of newly independent adulthood and pay off big in the long run.

5 Pieces of Money Advice for Young Adults

1. Create a Spending Plan: A.K.A. Your Budget

It doesn’t have to be complicated–it’s just about listing and keeping track of all your expenses and income on a weekly or monthly basis. It may not be pretty, but it’s better than the stress of not knowing your financial status. Also, there are plenty of great budgeting tools that are easy to learn and use. A budget is key to gaining control of your spending, and a sense of control as you face the real world on your own for the first time will really reduce your anxiety.

2. Follow the First Rule of Personal Finance: Pay Yourself First

Begin building up your emergency savings right away, even if it’s only 20 or 30 dollars a month. Save at least 10% of every dollar you get from any source. This money should go into a fund for emergencies–i.e. job loss–only, and should be separate from all other savings and other accounts you have. Click here for dos and don’ts of creating and maintaining your emergency fund.

The earlier you get into the habit of paying yourself first, the easier it becomes, and the more secure you’ll be in the long run. Build these savings into your budget. It’s only smart to face the real world with a financial cushion, should you have to deal with an unexpected setback.

 3. Attack Your Student Loans–or, at Least, Don’t Ignore Them

If you have student loans, explore your repayment options, and exercise them, if you have to buy yourself time or reduce your payments. Whatever you do, don’t just ignore them. Not only are they not going to go away, they will just become bigger, thanks to interest and penalties, and even more intimidating over time. Besides, ignore them for too long, and your lenders may just take action and garnish payments from your paycheck, anyway.

Staying on top of your student loans is also important for another reason: protecting your credit, which can impact everything from employment consideration, to renting an apartment. It is much tougher to face the real world with poor credit.

4. Pay Your Bills–and Don’t Abuse Credit

Yes, paying your bills when they are due matters, as much as it matters to you that you actually get paid on pay day. In addition to avoiding late fees and other penalties you can’t really afford, 35% of your credit score is based on your payment history. (Click here to learn the other components of your credit score.)

Also, don’t abuse credit by using it to pay for things you don’t have the cash for. Keep credit card balances to no more than about 30% of the credit you have access to. That means if you have a credit card limit of $ 1,000, do your best to limit your balance owed to under $ 350.

5. Don’t Pass Up Job Benefits

If and when you get a job, don’t skip the employee benefits, including health insurance and making contributions toward a retirement savings account. Sure, your take home pay will be smaller, but the benefits are more valuable over time–especially if you get sick or injured.

The Bottom Line on Money Advice for Young Adults

The longer you put these off, the more costly it will be to you over time, and the more you will regret it. Bite the bullet and adopt good money habits early. You’ll get used to doing it sooner, and they’ll pay off in the long run. Best of all, you’ll be able to face the real world with optimism, not fear.

Carrie Underwood Shares Close-Up Video of Face as She Jokes About Husband’s ‘Annoying’ Behavior

Carrie Underwood didn’t shy away from the cameras as she shared a video playfully documenting her husband’s “annoying” behavior on Saturday.

While driving in the car with her husband Mike Fisher, Underwood took a close-up video of her face — which is still healing from a scary accident in November that left her needing over 40 stitches — on her Instagram Story.

In the video, the 35-year-old singer looked directly at the camera and softly said, “Help me,” while her husband appeared to be making a squeaking noise over and over into his hands while driving.

“Must we? So annoying,” she wrote alongside the video.

Opening up about her frightening fall for the first time last week, the American Idol winner revealed her accident happened when she was taking her dogs out for a quick walk.

“I was taking the dogs out to go pee one last time, and I just — I tripped,” she said on iHeartRadio’s The Bobby Bones Show. “There was one step, and I didn’t let go of the leashes! Priorities! So that’s why my left hand’s fine. But I went to catch myself and I just missed a step.”

“If I had fallen anywhere else, I would have been perfectly fine. But it was one step that messed everything up,” she added.

The country star previously showed off her scars, which are located around her upper lip and chin, while supporting Fisher and his hockey team, the Nashville Predators, on April 21.

“Ready to cheer on the boys tonight! Especially that #12! I hear he’s alright! 😘 @mfisher1212 @predsnhl#LetsGoPreds,” Underwood captioned the snap.

A source close to Underwood previously told PEOPLE the singer — whose sixth studio album Cry Pretty drops Sept. 14 — looks “gorgeous in person.”

You honestly couldn’t see any scarring even up close,” said the source. “She had extensive reconstruction done around her mouth area and lips, but the doctors did a really great job obviously.”

Trump’s Next Top Diplomat Can’t Save His Own Face

Jim Watson/Getty

Most diplomats, when their old positions put their objectives at risk, look for opportunities to de-escalate conflict. Mike Pompeo, Donald Trump’s nominee for secretary of state, didn’t take the off-ramps that senators repeatedly offered him on Thursday.

Pompeo was never going to have an easy confirmation hearing. As a tea-party congressman before joining the administration, he had made bigoted statements about American Muslims. As Trump’s CIA director, Pompeo has used bellicose rhetoric against Iran and North Korea, to the delight of the White House, which has recently taken to purging national-security officials Trump considered out of sync with his impulses.

Bob Corker, the GOP chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, told Pompeo his colleagues were justified in wondering if his closeness with the president is “based on deferential willingness to go along to get along.” That kicked off five long and often agonizing hours in which Pompeo found himself caught between the president he seeks to please, the politician he used to be, and the senators he needs to convince.

FACE Africa Honoring Toronto Raptors President, Hosts UN Deputy Secretary-General

On March 31, FACE Africa, an organization helping to improve water quality and availability to more than 100,000 people in Liberia, will host the who’s who in philanthropy, government, business and entertainment in New York City, bringing awareness to the clean-water crisis in sub-Saharan Africa. The nonprofit has managed to forge a bond between the U.S. and Africa in creating impact across borders.

“Clean water is a catalyst for change,” Saran Kaba Jones, FACE Africa founder and CEO, said in a news release. “It is the first and most important step to lifting communities out of a cycle of illness and poverty, and also a powerful way to empower women and girls who are disproportionately burdened by the scarcity of safe water.”

Adding to the night, the org will honor Masai Ujiri, president of the Toronto Raptors, and host chairwoman and U.N. Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed. Ujiri previously served as general manager for the Denver Nuggets and was the NBA’s Executive of the Year in 2013.

Mohammed, who was Minister of Environment of the Federal Republic of Nigeria from November 2015 to December 2016, was also an adjunct professor at Columbia University and served on several international advisory boards and panels including the Global Development Program of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the African Women’s Millennium Initiative.

The FACE Africa WASH Gala has drawn African American as well as African diaspora professionals from industries including healthcare, activism, media, and business. The event boasts donors and supporters like NBA Hall of Famer Dikembe Mutombo, Nobel Laureate Leymah Gbowee, chef Marcus Samuelsson, Urban League President Marc Morial, and billionaire philanthropist Tony Elumelu.

According to the organization, nearly 850 million people around the world lack access to safe water supply sources, and in Africa specifically, 300 million people are affected daily. This year FACE Africa is partnering with The Last Well, a nonprofit with a shared mission to positively impact nearly 400,000 Liberians with access to clean water by the end of 2020. FACE Africa has also expanded its reach this year, launching its first clean water program in Osun State, Nigeria, in partnership with the Omoba Gbolahan Ayoola Foundation.

Sponsors of this year’s event include Sundial Brands, which just made major moves in supporting African and African American women through its latest acquisition deal to purchase Essence and expand under the Unilever umbrella, the September 20 Foundation, RLJ Kendeja Resort and Villas, FTI Consulting, and Ndini, a multimedia content platform.

Face ID will only come to Android phones next year, but it won’t be the same as the iPhone X

Face ID on Android

A report a few days ago said that Apple has a two-year lead on Android rivals when it comes to the adoption of advanced 3D face-scanning technologies. Many Android device makers may be in a hurry to copy the iPhone X look and feel, and we’ve seen dozens of notch clones already, but these notch bezels won’t house TrueDepth-like cameras.

New reports say that Android device makers will have to wait one more year to deploy devices with 3D-sensing capabilities. When these devices arrive, they might not be Galaxy or Pixel phones. And they might not even launch in international markets at first.

Trump’s New Cabinet Picks Face Hell on the Hill

Photo Illustration by Elizabeth Brockway/The Daily Beast

President Donald Trump’s announcement on Tuesday that he would be re-shuffling his foreign policy team gave congressional Democrats two new, high-profile opportunities to press the administration on a host of sensitive political matters. Early indications suggest that they will try to turn the upcoming confirmation hearings for Mike Pompeo and Gina Haspel into a fresh political hell for the administration.

Pompeo, the CIA director, will be nominated for the role of secretary of state while Haspel, his deputy, is slated to take over the CIA, after Trump fired his Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on Tuesday. Lawmakers said they were troubled at the swift sacking at Foggy Bottom, which comes at a time when the United States is dealing with continued Russian aggression worldwide and a possible summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

But in its wake lies an opportunity for the minority party: the rare opportunity to pin the administration.

A Growing Epidemic: Black Women Face Major Disparity in Maternal Mortality

It’s Women’s History Month, and black women have especially enjoyed a stellar 2018 in the spotlight for their strength and tenacity (Black Panther, anyone?), clever business savvy, CEO boss moves, and buying power.

But when it comes to one of the most important jobs in the world, there’s a major challenge that impacts the world’s future. Giving birth to the next generation of great black leaders has become a life-threatening experience for many.

According to research, African American women are 3 to 4 times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than white women. The reasons include disparities in access to healthcare, discrimination in poor or rural communities, and budget restrictions on free or low-income clinics that service women. Also, risk factors that lead to complications such as diabetes, hypertension, and obesity affect black women at higher rates than their white counterparts. This issue even has public faces in that of Erica Garner and Kyira Adele Dixon. Erica, the daughter of Eric Garner, died after a heart attack just three months into welcoming the birth of her son, and Dixon, the daughter-in-law of Judge Glenda Hatchett, died hours after having a C-section birth.

“One black woman dying after childbirth is one too many,” says Monica Raye Simpson, executive director of SisterSong: The National Women of Color Reproductive Justice Collective. Simpson is a certified doula and co-chair of the March for Black Women, and she has made it her life mission to raise awareness, gather resources, and advocate for changing stigmas and saving lives.

Black Enterprise talked with the activist about how black women can tackle the challenge head-on and beat the issue of maternal mortality:

Black Enterprise: What led to a focus on this issue and what challenges are specifically affecting black women?

Monica Raye Simpson: In 2014, we started to get information from researchers—those in the public health field—about the fact that maternal mortality was on the rise in this country and that it was impacting black women more than any other population. We started to dig in as a national organization based in the South, we really wanted to understand what was happening [specifically] in our Southern regions where there’s the largest populations of black women. That’s where we saw the shocking statistics, that black women were dying at a rate four times higher than white women. As the most industrialized country in the world, with all this wealth, you’re kidding me.

We didn’t want to just look at this from just a stats perspective. We wanted to understand the stories of black women to get to the root cause. We held focus groups in two of the states at that time that had two of the highest rates of maternity mortality: Georgia and Mississippi. We sat and talked with women about their [life experiences related to reproduction], from what [information they learned about] sex education…to post-partum, asking them about their stories. What we got from this was that it didn’t matter if the woman had the most education, if her social economic status was more upper-middle class or working class—what mattered was that she was a black woman and [the stories were similar] in the way they were treated when they went in for care. So many talked about how they were not given access to all information and because they had not, necessarily had the access, they were dealing with immense amounts of pain, infections, and near-death experiences. It was simply due to being treated differently because of the color of their skin.

How can black women empower themselves as patients and expectant mothers when they go for doctor’s visits?
We need to start sooner with comprehensive sex education and [change] how our girls are learning about their bodies and what happens to their bodies in pregnancy. If we cut that off and only start at the current problem in adult women, we’re not going to see numbers decrease—we’ll see the next generation dealing with the current problem again.

Also, we need to demand access to information. Demand it from our medical professionals. Be a patient advocate for ourselves. Ask questions of the system. Be prepared for that when you come in the room. We get such a short amount of time with our physicians, so we have to maximize that time and come in strategic. Let them know different scenarios of what’s happening—that’s important.

And let’s create a community among black women for us to be in constant communication with each other. On social media, there are awesome groups, [such as] Black Mamas Matter, an alliance of black women researchers, activists, and doctors. We have to be more connected to one another—in organizations and those working on the ground—and share our stories. I wrote a post on Facebook for example… I’m 38, I want to have a baby, I’m a professional, I’m single, I’m also queer, so there are a lot of different factors that come to play for me in terms of starting a family. So many questions come up; it’s about me being vulnerable enough and brave enough to share my experience. [That post] created an online community [of support and sharing information].

We should not have to lose our lives to bring life in this world, especially when the [risk factors] are rooted in systems of oppression and lack of access [to information] that can actually be eliminated.

Women Who Clean at Home or Work Face Lung Damage

Source: American Thoracic Society

Women who work as cleaners or regularly use cleaning sprays or other cleaning products at home appear to experience a greater decline in lung function over time than women who do not clean, according to new research published online in the American Thoracic Society’s American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

In “Cleaning at Home and at Work in Relation to Lung Function Decline and Airway Obstruction,” researchers at the University of Bergen in Norway analyzed data from 6,235 participants in the European Community Respiratory Health Survey. The participants, whose average age was 34 when they enrolled, were followed for more than 20 years.

“While the short-term effects of cleaning chemicals on asthma are becoming increasingly well documented, we lack knowledge of the long-term impact,” said senior study author Cecile Svanes, MD, PhD, a professor at the university’s Centre for International Health. “We feared that such chemicals, by steadily causing a little damage to the airways day after day, year after year, might accelerate the rate of lung function decline that occurs with age.”

The study found that compared to women not engaged in cleaning:

  • Forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), or the amount of air a person can forcibly exhale in one second, declined 3.6 milliliters (ml)/year faster in women who cleaned at home and 3.9 ml/year faster in women who worked as cleaners.
  • Forced vital capacity (FVC), or the total amount of air a person can forcibly exhale, declined 4.3 ml/year faster in women who cleaned at home and 7.1 ml/year faster in women who worked as cleaners.

The authors found that the accelerated lung function decline in the women working as cleaners was “comparable to smoking somewhat less than 20 pack- years.” [WH note: 1 pack-year is equal to smoking 20 cigarettes (1 pack) per day for 1 year.]

That level of lung impairment was surprising at first, said lead study author Øistein Svanes, a doctoral student also at the Department for Clinical Science. “However, when you think of inhaling small particles from cleaning agents that are meant for cleaning the floor and not your lungs, maybe it is not so surprising after all.”

The authors speculate that the decline in lung function is attributable to the irritation that most cleaning chemicals cause on the mucous membranes lining the airways, which over time results in persistent changes in the airways and airway remodeling.

The authors speculate that the decline in lung function is attributable to the irritation that most cleaning chemicals cause on the mucous membranes lining the airways, which over time results in persistent changes in the airways and airway remodeling.

The study did not find that the ratio of FEV1 to FVC declined more rapidly in women who cleaned than in those who did not. The metric is used when diagnosing and monitoring patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD. The study did find that asthma was more prevalent in women who cleaned at home (12.3 percent) or at work (13.7 percent) compared to those who did not clean (9.6 percent).

The study also did not find that men who cleaned, either at home or at work, experienced greater decline in FEV1 or FVC than men who did not.

The researchers took into account factors that might have biased the results, including smoking history, body mass index and education.

Study limitations include the fact that the study population included very few women who did not clean at home or work. These women, the authors wrote, might “constitute a selected socioeconomic group.” The number of men who worked as occupational cleaners was also small, and their exposure to cleaning agents was likely different from that of women working as cleaning professionals.

“The take home message of this study is that in the long run cleaning chemicals very likely cause rather substantial damage to your lungs,” Øistein Svanes said. “These chemicals are usually unnecessary; microfiber cloths and water are more than enough for most purposes.”

He added that public health officials should strictly regulate cleaning products and encourage producers to develop cleaning agents that cannot be inhaled.

Nvidia is creating surveillance cameras with built-in face recognition. Uh, great?

TwitterFacebook

Nvidia has partnered with AI developer AnyVision to create facial recognition technology for “smart cities” around the world. The two companies will work to install automatic facial recognition into CCTV (closed-circuit television) surveillance cameras.

AnyVision claims the technology enables cameras that can continuously scan for faces 24/7, automatically identifying and tracking individuals within a large crowd with 99% accuracy. Algorithms working with human monitors can then compare the faces identified against a database of known terrorists or criminals.

Carrie Underwood Works Out With Son After Breaking Wrist, Injuring Face

Carrie Underwood shared a sweet pic showing her working out with her husband and son, four months after breaking her wrist and injuring her face in a fall at home.

“My boys make work outs fun (and a bit less productive, but that’s ok!),” the American Idol alum, 34, captioned a pic that showed her doing a squat with her 2-year-old, Isaiah, who she shares with husband Mike Fisher.

A second pic showed the hockey star, 37, who recently announced he was coming out of retirement, doing a push-up with Isaiah.

As previously reported, Underwood broke her wrist and suffered other injuries after taking a hard fall on some steps outside her Nashville home in November.

She had surgery to put a pin in her wrist, joking that she would be setting off metal detectors at airports, and revealed in a Christmas update to fans that the accident was far worse than originally thought.

The “Jesus Take the Wheel” singer said that she’d had “between 40 and 50 stitches” to her face after the fall and “might look a bit different” now.

Fisher has been by his wife’s side as she recovered from her devastating injuries and a source told Us Weekly last month that she encouraged him to return to the Nashville Predators after just five months of retirement.

“She wants him to be happy and knew he should go for it,” the source told Us. “He asked for her blessing and totally got it. She’s behind him with whatever he chooses to do.”

As Us reported exclusively earlier this week, there is another project Underwood is working on as she prepares to return to the spotlight — having baby no. 2.

“Everyone around her knows she wants a big family, and they’re always trying for another baby,” the country superstar’s friend told Us.

Airbnb hosts face fees in city worried about affordable housing

Airbnb hosts in Boston could get hit with fees in an effort to combat high rents in popular neighborhoods.

On Monday, Boston Mayor Marty Walsh announced that he had filed a city ordinance to regulate short-term rentals. His plan would charge Airbnb hosts fees for renting out their properties, as well as limit the number of days a unit can be rented out.

“This ordinance is an important step towards our goal of reducing housing costs by creating disincentives to take units off the market for use as short-term rentals,” Mayor Walsh said in a statement. “It also allows for the continued use of short-term rentals in scenarios that are non-disruptive to our neighborhoods and support our tourism industry.” Read more…

How to Get the Right Hat For Your Face Shape & Body Type

As you can imagine, people have all kinds of different heads and head shapes with sizes and unique features. When we dress, we always try to highlight the attractive features and flatter or improve the look of the areas that are not so advantageous.

It’s the same thing with hats; not every hat is suited to every face shape and body type. Sadly, this kind of knowledge has vanished from societies and even at the hat store, often, they won’t be able to tell you about it.

How Do I Know About It? I have vintage hat books and magazines, and I went through them and saw great discussions of hat retailers, and so I’m going to share all that knowledge with you.

Hats For Larger Gentlemen

If you have a small hat like with a not so wide crown and a very short brim, it makes the person look automatically bigger; so that’s something you should always avoid. On the other hand, a larger hat makes everything more proportional, more suitable, and the wearer doesn’t look oversized.

The same is true for the hat band. Ideally, you go with something quite wide that has a very low contrast to the hat, in the same color. You want to choose a crown that is not too high but more of a medium height with a pinch not so much in the middle because you want to avoid a pointy look.

You much either want to go for a little pinch more towards the sides that is not too accentuated because then it’s a more harmonious look with your fuller body.

If you’re a bigger gentleman and you want to snap your brim down, that’s okay but rather than having just a slight snap, try to snap it all the way down and get a really deep snap, that way it suits your silhouette more. The brim should be rather wide, at least two and a half inches which is about six and a quarter centimeters.

Fedoras are a great hat for larger men, and so are Homburg hats with a certain size. As I said, choose the hat band ideally in a color very similar to your head, so there’s a low contrast.

Hats For Short & Slim Gentlemen

If you’re shorter, you’ll always benefit from wearing a hat because it elongates your body and makes you look taller. Rather than having a rather wide crown, it pays to have it pinched to a point because it just flatters your short silhouette more. Also, rather than going with a tone in tone hat band, it pays to switch it up for something that’s contrasting.

A pointed pinch is the way to go

A pointed pinch is the way to go

If you’re shorter, you always want to avoid to have your brim snapped and much rather have it face up; the simple reason for this is when a viewer looks at you, and your brim is curled up or sideways, it gives the perception of elevation and height which is exactly what you want. Also, rather than going with wide-brimmed hats, it pays to go with something shorter.

Again, pinch on top works and the higher the crown, the better. Ideally, you want a brim that is less than 2 inches or 5 cm, however, if it gets too short, and the crown gets too low, you may appear like a boy so always try to go for that high crown and slim curl up brim.

If you take a big hat with a wide brim and a taller crown, it makes the wearer even smaller which is something you always want to avoid.

Hats For Tall & Thin Gentlemen

Ideally, you don’t want to accentuate your height even more which means don’t go for a high crown. Instead, go for medium to low crowns. Also, you want to opt for a contrasting hat band because it visually separates the top part of the hat from the bottom part and so overall, it makes you look shorter than you are. Of course, you don’t look short, but it looks more harmonious on your hat.

The brim should be about 2 inches or 5 cm wide and you want to step it down. Also, rather than wearing your hat straight, it can pay to simply tilt it to one side for a more elegant look that is more harmonious and proportional.

In a nutshell, if you are tall and slim, you should avoid tall crowns and matching hat bands. Instead, go with something contrasting. Likewise, do not wear a short-brimmed hat that is curled up because it makes you look taller. Instead, go for a somewhat wider snap brim hat that is more appropriate and that little tilt just helps to tie it all together.

Facial Features To Consider When Choosing A Hat

A snapped down hat for men with bigger noses

A snapped down hat for men with more prominent noses

Prominent Nose

If you have a big nose, the most important thing is the width of the brim. You want something that is at least as wide as your nose so usually about 2 and a half inches or more. If you go with a custom hat, you may even decide to have a brim that is wider in the front than in the back. If you get something off the rack, that is not an option you have.

Rather than having it curled up, you want to snap it down. Rather than going for a very pointy pinch, go for something that’s a little wider. Slim brims that are snapped up or just slightly snapped down are your enemy because they will just accentuate the size of your nose.

If you have a receding chin, avoid a full crown

If you have a receding chin, avoid a full crown

Receding Chin

If you have a receding chin, go with hats that are not too extreme. A hat can’t help to make the chin disappear, but it can help to level everything and make it look harmonious.

So that means, opt for a hat with a medium crown and a slight pinch that is not too pointy but also not round. Go for a medium wide brim that is slightly snapped to the front.

Again, it’s very flattering to tilt the hat slightly to one side. Make sure to avoid a big hat and a full crown because that will just highlight your receding chin, likewise, don’t snap your hat too much because it’s not an advantageous look for you.

If you have chiseled features, skip the tilt

If you have chiseled features, skip the tilt

Chiseled Features

Now if you have chiseled features, you want a hat with a slight pinch on the crown that is not too small and you want a nice deep snap. It’s definitely best to not tilt your hat but keep it straight so everything looks more proportional.

In order not to highlight your chiseled features, I urge you to stay away from a very tall crown or a very slim brim.

Slim brims are unflattering for round faces

Slim brims are unflattering for round faces

Round Face

Similar to those who have a stronger built, it pays to go with something that is not too slim. Regarding crown height, go with something medium and a matching headband that is not too small.

A larger brim works better for you so don’t get anything under 2 inches or 5 centimeters, I’d even go to at least two and a half inches or six and a quarter cm.

If you like to snap your brim, the fedora hat is the right choice. Otherwise, you can also go with a Homburg hat. If you’re a man with a round face, avoid getting hats that are too small.

You don’t want something that has a pointy crown, and you also don’t want to have a very slim brim that is not snapped down all the way; just makes you look goofy and disproportionately large.

Small and lifted brims only highlight your protruding ears more

Small and lifted brims only highlight your protruding ears more

Protruding Ears

Now if you have protruding ears, it’s very important that you have a wider brim that is snapped down and not snapped up. The brim is important because it doesn’t highlight the size of your ears or the shape, but it rather helps to cover them up. Opt for a wider crown that is not too pointy, although a little point is alright.

Also, go with a wide hat band that’s ideally somewhat contrasting because of your ears, it pays to not just snap down the hat in the front but also in the back. If you have protruding ears, you want to avoid small hats with shorter brims and anything that is pointed up.

Because of that, a Homburg hat is not the right hat for you because it’s curved up and it just highlights your ears and it just stands out and it’s just not a flattering look. The most important thing is that you the wide brim is always snapped down.

What Hat Work with your face and body type - Infographic

What Hat Work with your face and body type – Infographic

If You Get Conflicting Information, Don’t Get Confused!

First of all, I suggest you go with the facial features first because the head is closest to the face. Next up, look at your body type; for example, if your face shape calls for a whole crown but you’re also a slim and tall man, maybe bring the crown height down, so it doesn’t accentuate your height even further.

Also, maybe go with a contrasting hat band, so it visually separates the top part from the hat in the bottom which makes it look shorter.

Hats For A Big Head

Ideally, you want something that is proportional to your size so don’t go with something too small, but rather with a nice sized hat and with a nice pinch on top. You also want to go with a headband that’s not too wide but also not too slim, you can have it slightly snapped down in the front and snapped up in the back. It’s always good to tilt the hat to the side slightly, just makes it look more elegant. Same is true for snapping up the front part of the brim, makes your head even look bigger.

So if you have a bigger head, avoid a wide crown, avoid a large contrasting headband, because they’re both things that make your head look even larger. Overall, it really pays to experiment with different hat shapes which are most easily done at a hat store because there; you get the full selection.  If you buy online, they may look great in the picture but it may not be great on your head.

Personally, I think it’s okay to have a range of different hats for different purposes, in slightly different shapes, because depending on the outfit you have, the hat can also have a different appearance and impression on others. The good thing is if you follow these rules, you will end up with a hat that flatters your face and your body and you can focus on things like the edge finishing, or the color, or maybe the material.

What’s your go-to hat? Now that you know the rules, have you considered switching to a different hat for a change?

The Galaxy S9 will face even stiffer competition next year

Huawei Mate 10 vs Galaxy S9, release date

Although there’s a good selection of Android flagships to choose from in most stores, Samsung still dominates the premium handset market. At this point, it seems that LG and Moto are never going to truly challenge Samsung for the most profitable sector of the market, which in turn means that Samsung is the only company with the R&D budget to really push the boundaries.

But that doesn’t take into account Samsung’s real challenger — Chinese companies that have outgrown their cheap-and-cheerful roots, and which are now making genuinely top-tier phones, often for less than the $ 900+ that Samsung charges for its best devices.

How to Get a Poker Face at Work

how to get a poker face at work - image of lady gagaHave you ever worried that your face gives away your thoughts every time? Putting on a poker face is always a good skill to have, but especially with performance reviews (and bonus season) coming up, now is a great time to ponder how to get a poker face at work. Here’s Reader K’s question:

A mentor of mine said one of my best qualities is that I’m genuine; however, I was told that resulted in being easily read and having zero poker face. If people can read me, they know how and where to hit, which isn’t good. How can I develop a poker face and be less easily read?

Good question, K, and I can’t wait to hear what the readers say. I also have a face that is far too easily read, but here are a few ideas on how to get a poker face at work (and beyond):

Pictured: Lady Gaga / Poker Face.

  • Sing a silly song in your head to offset strong emotions. A male friend told me years ago that he sang the MacGyver theme song to himself whenever he was about to cry, and that stuck with me. (Pssst: Here’s our last discussion on crying at work.)
  • Learn a bit about body language, because it can work with or against your facial expressions. If your face falls when you feel defeat, and then your body language follows (perhaps by slumping, crossing your arms or legs to protect yourself, etc.), the internal emotion only becomes stronger. If you feel defeat and you force your body language to do the opposite of your emotion (such as sitting up straighter, maybe even forcing a smile), then at the very least, whoever is in the room with you will be confused.
  • Cover your tells, physically if you have to — for example, rub your forehead or fake a cough or sneeze.
  • Take some lessons from media training, as shared by a commenter on Ask a Manager when they had an open thread on this topic. He or she noted to “relax your eyebrows to their natural resting position and take your tongue away from the roof of your mouth (it tends to go right there when you’re holding something back — it’s a physical response). This automatically relaxes your face and neutralizes your expression,” and also recommended carrying a small object you can discreetly touch to “center” you, such as a coin in your pocket.
  • Have a safe, neutral, go-to phrase. In one of my favorite movies, Joe Versus the Volcano, one of Meg Ryan’s characters blankly says, “I have no response to that,” whenever she’s confronted with something she doesn’t necessarily understand. The character isn’t really a great role model, per se — and you probably shouldn’t use it as often as she does in the two days Joe knows her character — but I’ve always taken power from the fact that it’s a valid response. You don’t owe anyone more than that. Other options here might be, “Tell me more about your thoughts on ____,” while you gather your own thoughts, or asking a question involving logistics or facts.

Readers: If you consider yourself to have a good poker face, what are your best tips? For those of you who had to develop a poker face, what’s your advice?

JAY-Z on Saving Marriage with Beyoncé After Infidelity: ‘The Hardest Thing Is Seeing Pain on Someone’s Face That You Caused’

JAY-Z is opening up about how his marriage survived scandal.

In an extensive new interview with T: The New York Times Style Magazine, the famed rapper offered a rare glimpse inside his private world with wife Beyoncé, admitting to past infidelity, revealing his state of mind leading up to the infamous transgression and sharing how the power couple pieced their relationship back together.

“You know, most people walk away, and like divorce rate is like 50 percent or something ’cause most people can’t see themselves. The hardest thing is seeing pain on someone’s face that you caused, and then have to deal with yourself,” he told the outlet. “So, you know, most people don’t want to do that. You don’t want to look inside yourself. And so you walk away.”

JAY-Z never walked away from his own marriage, but it hasn’t always been easy.

RELATED: JAY-Z Confesses His Relationship With Beyoncé Was Not ‘Built on the 100 Percent Truth’

Since 2013, the musician has been dogged by cheating rumors, which were only compounded by the news of his notorious 2014 #elevatorgate squabble with sister-in-law Solange after the Met Gala. Beyoncé more than hinted at marital strife on her 2016 adultery-fueled visual album Lemonade — and JAY-Z finally alluded to being unfaithful on the title track of his latest album, 4:44, released in June.

JAY-Z, 47, told T that therapy helped him look inward.

“I grew so much from the experience,” the rapper (born Shawn Carter) said. “But I think the most important thing I got is that everything is connected. Every emotion is connected and it comes from somewhere. And just being aware of it. Being aware of it in everyday life puts you at such a … you’re at such an advantage.”

The artist — nominated for eight awards at the 2018 Grammys — said he built up walls due to experiences from his childhood.

“You go into survival mode, and when you go into survival mode what happen? You shut down all emotions. So even with women, you gonna shut down emotionally, so you can’t connect ,” he said. “In my case, like it’s, it’s deep. And then all the things happen from there: infidelity …”

JAY-Z acknowledged problems in their relationship informed both Lemonade and 4:44.

“We were using our art almost like a therapy session,” he said of the music, adding that playing the deeply personal tracks for one another was painful — and “very, very uncomfortable.”

While the A-list pair were working on their respective albums — and a joint album they had previously been working on — emotions were running high.

“We were sitting in the eye of that hurricane,” JAY-Z said. “The best place is right in the middle of the pain. And that’s where we were sitting. And it was uncomfortable. And we had a lot of conversations. You know. really proud of the music she made, and she was really proud of the art I released. And, you know, at the end of the day we really have a healthy respect for one another’s craft. I think she’s amazing.”

Today, it seems, JAY-Z and Beyoncé are doing better than ever. Already parents to 5-year-old daughter Blue Ivy, the couple welcomed twins Rumi and Sir in June.

“It is not a secret that Beyoncé and Jay had huge problems a couple of years ago. It was obvious to everyone that spent time with them,” an insider told PEOPLE this summer. “There was always tension in the air, but they both worked very hard to get to the place where they are now … They are very excited about adding babies to the family. Jay was great during Beyoncé’s pregnancy and continues to be great. He loves being a dad and Beyoncé seems very happy.”

Phylicia Rashad the Face of $25 Million Initiative to Diversify American History

Classic TV lovers know her as Dr. Huxtable’s smart and elegant wife Clair on The Cosby Show, and today’s generation might only recognize her as the classy but calculating matriarch Diana DuBois on Fox’s hit show Empire.

(Image: Wikimedia/The Heart Truth)

But she’s recently taken on a new role that is set to ensure that the contributions and advances of African Americans are never forgotten and that untold stories are finally given center stage in American history narratives.

Phylicia Rashad is the ambassador of the African-American Cultural Heritage Action Fund (AACHAF), a $ 25 million initiative launched by The National Trust for Historic Preservation in partnership with the Ford Foundation, the JPB Foundation, and the Open Society Foundations.

The multi-year national initiative establishes a grant fund for the protection and restoration of African American historical sites, including the Shockoe Bottom in Richmond and the Fort Huachuca Black Officers’ Club in Arizona, and to address funding gaps for site preservation. The fund will also help to tell once-hidden stories of history-making African Americans and enlighten youth on black history and landmark sites through a program called The National Trust’s Hands-On Preservation Experience. In addition, the fund will back research on the link between the impact of preserving historic sites and the resolution of urban problems that disproportionately affect communities of color.

“There is an opportunity and an obligation for us to step forward boldly and ensure the preservation of places which tell the often-overlooked stories of African Americans and their many contributions to our nation,” Stephanie Meeks, president and CEO of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, said in a news release. “We believe that this fund will be transformative for our country, and we are committed to crafting a narrative that expands our view of history and, ultimately, begins to reconstruct our national identity, while inspiring a new generation of activists to advocate for our diverse historic places.”

Along with Rashad, academic, arts, government, and business leaders will be part of an advisory council for the fund. Darren Walker, president of the Ford Foundation, will serve as its chair.

“Without a thorough reckoning with the complex and difficult history of our country, especially when it comes to race, we will not be able to overcome intolerance, injustice, and inequality,” said Walker. “We have an opportunity with this Fund to broaden the American narrative to reflect our remarkably rich and diverse history.”

The National Trust for Historic Preservation, chartered by Congress nearly 70 years ago, has decades of experience leading the preservation of African American historic sites and widening the tent for underrepresented communities in the professional field of preservation. In the past five years alone, the National Trust leveraged more than $ 10 million to preserve dozens of important African American sites.

Check out what Rashad has to say about the initiative and why diversifying the stories of American history is importance to her and her family:

Inside Ocho Tijax: Meet the Women in Guatemala Offering Support in the Face of Horror

Five friends were watching the horror on the news from their homes on March 8. A shelter was going up in flames with girls inside. Stephany Arreaga picked up the phone and called her mom. “Are you seeing this?” she asked. “What can we do?”

“Let’s go down there,” Mayra Jimenez suggested. And so, Arreaga and Jimenez gathered their friends—Maria del Carmen Peña, Hane Herrera and Kimy De León—and went to help.

Until this moment, these women weren’t really activists: They were a graphic designer, a journalist, a sociologist, a dentist and a photographer making the nearly hour-long drive to Hogar Seguro Virgen de la Asunción, just outside Guatemala City.

By the time they arrived, emergency workers were bringing out survivors and bodies.

The women started to help by meeting the families as they arrived and going with them to the hospital or to the morgue. “I knew, at that moment, that people were suffering and that I could be useful, somehow, for those families,” Jimenez told Ms. “But in relation to the girls, it was a tremendous feeling of pain and love; it was wanting to be with them in their final moments, even knowing that they were dying one by one.”

By the time it was all over, 41 girls were dead, and 15 were severely burned.

The girls were in shelter because they had been reported missing at some point—running away from abuse, kidnapped, trafficked. They were not criminals. They were there to be protected as the government sorted out a safe space for them to go. But at the shelter, they were mistreated. They were physically and sexually abused, medicated against their will, forced to undergo abortions and fed spoiled food. Some were even trafficked again.

Things weren’t much better at the boys shelter. The children tried to escape, but the national police were waiting. Rather than help these vulnerable children, Guatemala’s President Jimmy Morales and other government officials abdicated responsibility and turned them over to the police. The boys were locked in an auditorium; the girls in a small 22’-by-23’ room with a few mattresses but no blankets.

When the girls begged to be allowed to go to the bathroom, the police refused. They built a makeshift bathroom using the mattresses that had been left on the floor to create some small place of privacy. Quickly, however, the area overflowed, and the stench became unbearable. Again, the girls begged to be released. They refused the food the police brought because they suspected their food at the shelter had been drugged to make them compliant for abuse and trafficking.

Finally, with no other apparent options, officials think some of the girls moved a mattress near a window and set it on fire, believing the police would respond to the smoke and let them out. Instead, the police kept them locked in the room as it burned.

As the five friends accompanied the families of the victims through the medical and legal processes, they quickly realized that the Guatemalan government was taking little responsibility for assisting the survivors or the families or seeking justice by identifying and prosecuting perpetrators—and that they needed a longer-term strategy to address the atrocities of the fire and its aftermath.

They founded Ocho Tijax, an organization to accompany families, support survivors and seek justice—a “collective of love that is born in the midst of pain.”

The author with members of Ocho Tijax.

“Love is the purest emotion, and the one that has sustained me for more than six months working alongside these families and girls,” Arreaga told Ms. “At the moment of the tragedy, my first instinct was that of providing protection, as a woman and a mother. Offering my solidarity from afar, to the families and the survivors, was not going to be enough. There was so much need and zero government support. This is still the case today.”

Ocho Tijax currently coordinates with lawyers from the Human Rights Law Firm to provide legal aid for four survivors and their families, as well as for the families of eight victims of the fire. They provide counseling for the families of these 12 girls and facilitate counseling and physical and emotional healing therapy for the four survivors in coordination with “Camino de Sol” and a psychologist from the Human Rights Law Firm. They also create media campaigns to dignify the memory and lives of the 56 victims with the assistance of Prensa Comunitaria.

As the cases move through Guatemala’s legal system, they offer support and accompaniment during the hearings and trials of the Hogar Seguro case, provide financial aid to cover transportation and other costs for the families, facilitate testimonies to serve as evidence for the Public Prosecutor’s office and help the survivors and family members understand and navigate the complexities of the legal case and their search for justice.

“These women are true heroes,” Rob Mercatante, co-director of the Human Rights Defenders Project in Guatemala, an organization that provides support for human rights activists, said of Ocho Tijax. “When they became aware of the fire, instead of posting about it on social media, they went to the scene of the tragedy. They were present with the grieving families during moments of unimaginable loss and suffering. They provided loving support—to these complete strangers—in the hospitals, the morgues, and the funeral parlors. But it didn’t end there. These courageous women continue to stand in solidarity with the young girls who survived the massacre and the families of those who didn’t make it out alive.”

One of the survivors, Cynthia, was only 14 years old at the time of the fire. Over 60 percent of her body was burned. She was in a coma for months, and she had to undergo multiple surgeries to address the physical damage from the fire. Now, she hopes for the quinceañera celebration many Latin American girls experience to mark their coming of age—and since her family can’t afford the traditional party, the women of Ocho Tijax are raising funds for her celebration.

Ocho Tijax is still devoted to the legal battles ahead. “Their next challenge is to bring to justice those government officials responsible for this horrific crime,” Mercatante said. “This is a very dangerous endeavor, as seeking truth and justice in Guatemala is a high-risk activity… especially when those implicated are high-ranking government officials, including the president of the country.”

Mercatante, however, has faith. “The women of Ocho Tijax,” he declared, “are the very definition of selfless courage.”

Backpackers and visiting workers face exploitation in this country

It’s no surprise Australia is a drawcard for workers.

The country has one of the highest minimum wages in the world (A$ 18.29/US$ 13.96 per hour) and an attractive quality of life. But for many backpackers and migrants, exploitation by employers is rife.

One in three international students and backpackers are being underpaid, earning less than A$ 12 an hour, according to a comprehensive report called Wage Theft in Australia, which surveyed 4,322 people on temporary migrant visas.

While underpayment was widespread across many industries, the worst offenders were in food service — specifically in fruit and vegetable picking.  Read more…

The iPhone X’s Face ID is years ahead of Android

iPhone X vs. Galaxy Note 8

The iPhone X brings to the iOS ecosystem a brand new trick that, in time, will probably find its way to other iOS and macOS devices. Face ID is the iPhone X’s signature feature, a facial recognition system that’s more sophisticated than anything available from the competition, and a lot more secure.

Some of the Android fans who have used facial recognition on Samsung phones like the Galaxy Note 8 and Galaxy S8 will rightly say that Apple hasn’t invented the feature. They may even roll their eyes incredulously if you tell them Apple’s way is better and will probably be copied by their favorite Android device maker. Those people should really read this iPhone X review from an Android blog.
