Harvey Weinstein Faces Two New Criminal Investigations Over Alleged Assaults

(LOS ANGELES) — Authorities in Los Angeles and New York said Thursday they had opened new investigations into Harvey Weinstein, the latest in a series of criminal probes into conduct by the disgraced film mogul which has sparked a sexual harassment scandal roiling Hollywood and other industries.

The Manhattan district attorney’s office said a senior prosecutor has been assigned to investigate allegations by “Boardwalk Empire” actress Paz de la Huerta, who told CBS News that Weinstein raped her twice in her apartment in 2010. Spokeswoman Joan Vollero said New York police were also involved, but further details could not be provided.

De la Huerta spoke to CBS News by phone and said the first rape occurred in October 2010 after Weinstein gave her a ride home from a party, insisted on having a drink in her apartment and forced himself on her. She said the second rape occurred in December 2010 after Weinstein came to her apartment; she had been drinking and was not in a condition to give consent, CBS reported the actress said.

Los Angeles police are investigating allegations about Weinstein that occurred in 2015, but spokesman Josh Rubenstein said he could not provide any additional details. The department is also investigating a report by an Italian actress and model who said she was raped by Weinstein in 2013.

Weinstein representative Sallie Hofmeister reiterated a statement that Weinstein, 65, denies all allegations of non-consensual sex.

Authorities in Beverly Hills and London are also investigating Weinstein for possible criminal cases.

The investigations came four weeks after The New York Times published an expose of sexual harassment allegations against Weinstein, leading to his firing from the company he co-founded and his expulsion from the producers guild and the organization that bestows the Academy Awards.

The accusations against Weinstein have prompted numerous allegations of sexual harassment and abuse against powerful men in Hollywood and other industries.

CNN reported on Thursday that eight current or former “House of Cards” workers claim that Kevin Spacey made the production a “toxic” workplace and one ex-employee alleges the actor sexually assaulted him.

The workers’ identities were withheld from Thursday’s report because they fear professional fallout, the cable news channel said.

Among them is a former production assistant who alleged that Spacey assaulted him during one of the Netflix show’s early seasons, and CNN reported that all of the people described Spacey’s behavior as predatory.

The report accuses Spacey of allegedly targeting staffers who were typically young and male with nonconsensual touching and crude comments.

Netflix has suspended production on the series, which was slated to end after its sixth season. The streaming service and “House of Cards” producers said Thursday that one allegation against Spacey involved a remark and gesture made during production of the show’s first season in 2012. After, Spacey willingly participated in training and producer Media Rights Capital said it was not aware of any additional complaints against the actor since then.

The production company said it has instituted a hotline for complaints and will investigate them thoroughly. There was no word on the fate of “House of Cards” in Thursday’s statements.

A person with knowledge of the decision said late Thursday that Spacey’s publicist and talent agency CAA have parted ways with the actor. His representatives on Wednesday said the two-time Oscar winner was in treatment for an unspecified condition.

Also on Thursday, actor Corey Feldman appeared on “The Dr. Oz Show” and named the man who he said molested him when he was a young teen.

Feldman made his comments in an interview with series host Mehmet Oz and in an on-air call that Oz identified as being to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Los Angeles Police Department Officer Drake Madison says the department is aware of the show, but no report has yet been filed.

The Associated Press is withholding his name because the man could not be located to comment on Feldman’s allegations.

Feldman, 46, gained fame in the 1980s with films including “Gremlins,” ”The Goonies” and “Stand by Me.”

While the outcome of criminal investigations into allegations against Weinstein remains unclear, the producer may have to give sworn testimony in a lawsuit he filed against his former company.

Attorneys for The Weinstein Co. told a Delaware judge on Thursday that they want to take sworn testimony from the producer, who is suing to gain access to his personnel file and emails.

Weinstein’s seeking the records to defend himself in potential civil and criminal cases, and to help the company respond to a civil rights investigation by New York’s attorney general.

The judge said Weinstein could be deposed, even though his attorney said a deposition would be “tricky” and “fraught with problems,” given the ongoing criminal investigations. The attorney said Weinstein’s ability to testify would be limited without waiving his Fifth Amendment rights against self-incrimination.

Rapper Kodak Black Indicted on Sexual Assault Charges, Faces 30 Years in Prison

Rapper Kodak Black has been indicted by a South Carolina grand jury on charges of first degree criminal sexual conduct.

The charges stem from an incident in that took place back in November.

via Variety:

According to a sheriff’s office incident report cited by the station, the rapper, whose real name is Dieuson Octave, assaulted a teenage girl at a hotel after his concert at the Treasure City nightclub. The girl first reported the assault to her school nurse; a school official notified the Florence County Sheriff’s Office. Octave, 20, was released from the Florence County Detention Center on Dec. 1 on a $ 100,000 bond.

Beattie Ashmore, Octave’s attorney at the time of arrest, was not available for comment when his office as contacted by Variety on Monday.

Clements told WPDE that if Octave is convicted, he faces up to 30 years in prison. No trial date had been set at press time.

Octave recently completed an anger-management program related to a different case: Violation of house arrest resulting from a February probation-violation charge, which stemmed from a May 2016 arrest on charges including armed robbery, false imprisonment, possession of a firearm by a delinquent and fleeing or attempting to elude law enforcement.

The rapper recently announced dates for his “Project Baby” tour, which begins Oct. 21 in California and continues through the end of the year.

‘Game of Thrones’ star weighs in on Dany and Jon’s union: ‘It’s going to blow up in their faces’

Davos Seaworth has basically been the lone voice of reason on Game of Thrones since his introduction in Season 2, graduating from advising the terminally stubborn Stannis Baratheon to advising the suicidally stubborn Jon Snow (aka Aegon Targaryen).

Both of those roles were pretty thankless, and now that Jon has decided to unite — politically and, um, physically — with Daenerys Targaryen (aka Jon’s aunt), life’s about to get a lot more difficult for everyone on Team Snowgaryen heading into the final season.

According to science you should never put smiley faces in work emails

🙁 🙁 🙁

Laptops
Laptops

There’s a fine line between friends and co-workers and often that line gets blurred.

Should you invite your work colleague to your birthday party? Is it appropriate to tell your co-worker about your tumultuous love life? And, how many glasses of wine is it socially acceptable to drink in front of your boss?

There are so many questions we need answering to help us locate the professional line, the biggest being work email etiquette – and more specifically the use of smiley faces.

Smiley faces are a great way to punctuate texts and messages, whether it’s for softening blows, relieving awkward moments or just making your message seem warmer. However, it turns out there’s a limit, with using them in work emails actually having a negative impact.

office buzzwords

According to a new study published in the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science, using smiley faces in work emails has a huge effect on how you’re perceived, particularly in terms of age, gender and competence.

The study, conducted by researchers from Ben-Gurion University in Israel, involved three experiments, featuring 549 people over 29 different countries, evaluating the difference in people’s perceptions when receiving an email with or without a smiley face.

While the study showed a general assumption that the people who sent smiley faces tended to be young and female, the most interesting point to come out of the experiment was the effect it had on perceived competence.

‘Our findings provide first-time evidence that, contrary to actual smiles, smileys only marginally increased perceptions of warmth and actually decrease perceptions of competence,’ explained Ella Glikson, an author or the study, in a press release. ‘In formal business emails, a smiley is not a smile.’

Her advice? ‘In initial interactions, it is better to avoid using smileys, regardless of age or gender.’

Well that’s certainly given us something to think about ?

Stephen Fry Reportedly Faces Blasphemy Probe After Calling God A ‘Maniac’

English comedian Stephen Fry is reportedly under investigation for blasphemy after calling God “utterly evil” and a “maniac” during an interview with an Irish TV show two years ago.

An unidentified member of the public told the Irish Independent they had reported the outspoken atheist’s comments to authorities in western Ireland because they were doing their “civic duty by reporting a crime,” not because they were personally offended.

Individuals who publish or speak blasphemy can face a fine of up to €25,000 under the Republic of Ireland’s Defamation Act 2009, according to the BBC.

Fry, who currently stars in CBS’s “The Great Indoors,” criticized God on TV channel RTE in 2015 after being asked what he’d say to “him, her or it” if given the chance.

“I’ll say: Bone cancer in children, what’s that about? How dare you create a world where there is such misery that’s not our fault? It’s utterly, utterly evil,” he told Gay Byrne, host of program “The Meaning of Life.” “Why should I respect a capricious, mean-minded, stupid god who creates a world which is so full of injustice and pain?”

“The god who created this universe, if he created this universe, is quite clearly a maniac, an utter maniac, totally selfish,” Fry added. “We have to spend our lives on our knees thanking him. What kind of god would do that?”

“Yes, the world is very splendid, but it also has in it insects whose whole life cycle is to burrow into the eyes of children and make them blind,” he said.

The individual claiming responsibility for reporting Fry’s comments told the Independent that they traveled to the Ennis Garda station to file the report shortly after the interview aired. They’ve repeatedly followed up with police ever since.

“I told the Garda I wanted to report Fry for uttering blasphemy and RTE for publishing/broadcasting it and that I believed these were criminal offenses under the Defamation Act 2009,” the person told the news site. “I simply believed that the comments made by Fry on RTE were criminal blasphemy and that I was doing my civic duty by reporting a crime.”

Local authorities told the Independent that they are investigating the complaint but that charges are unlikely.

Other atheists have since rallied behind Fry.

Atheist Ireland, which has called the defamation law “silly, silencing, and dangerous,” responded to news of the investigation by publishing 25 other blasphemous quotes that they released after the Irish law first went into effect.

The British Humanist Association also released a statement on Saturday defending Fry’s words and also calling for the dissolution of Ireland’s blasphemy law.

“It is ridiculous that Stephen Fry is being investigated for a possible breach of Ireland’s blasphemy laws,” BHA Chief Executive Andrew Copson said. “Not only are such laws detrimental to free speech here in Europe, but they also enable countries like Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Iran to justify their own laws, which in the case of 13 states come with a death sentence.”

A spokesperson for Fry, reached by the Telegraph, declined comment, stating: “[There is] nothing for us to say while this is under investigation.”

Congressional Candidate Faces Double Mastectomy and Trump’s ‘Disastrous’ Health Policies: ‘I’m Not Intimidated’

Congressional candidate Alejandra Campoverdi is taking President Trump‘s plan to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act very personally.

The 37-year-old former White House aide to President Obama publicly revealed last week that she has a genetic mutation called BRCA2, which means she has an 85-percent likelihood of developing breast cancer.

The disease claimed the lives of her grandmother and great-grandmother and almost took her mother’s, and now Campoverdi is making her BRCA2 diagnosis — and her decision to have a preventative double mastectomy in two years — the centerpiece of her campaign to fill Xavier Becerra’s vacant congressional seat in California’s 34th district.

“Health care is a life or death issue for so many Americans, so many people in my district in Los Angeles,” Campoverdi tells PEOPLE. “Sometimes we can get into debates that are very theoretical about issues, and forget that there’s a lot personally on the line for people every day — that every day someone doesn’t have access to health care, or that every day somebody has a bill that puts them in the position of going bankrupt.”

“I’m fine being vulnerable about , because if it’s able to bring the attention back to people, which is what this is all about, then it’s worth it for me,” she adds.

Campoverdi is one of 23 candidates running to fill the seat vacated by Becerra, now the California attorney general, in the April 4 special election. The top two candidates will continue onto a runoff election in June.

Campoverdi says the catalyst for her congressional run was the election of President Trump, whose proposed American Health Care Act has been met with resistance from both Democrats and Republicans in Washington, and whose threat to support continued federal funding for Planned Parenthood only if it stopped providing abortion services was swiftly rejected by the women’s health organization. Just Monday, the Congressional Budget Office reported that under the House Obamacare repeal plan, fourteen million more people would be uninsured in 2018 than under current law.

Campoverdi, who says she worked to help pass Obamacare as an aide in the Obama White House “because I knew it would save lives,” challenged Trump by name in her first TV campaign ad.

“If Donald Trump wants to have a conversation about women’s bodies, let’s start with mine,” she says in the ad that debuted Thursday, two days after she went public with her diagnosis in a Washington Post interview.

“I don’t trust Donald Trump — or Republicans — to be honest about my health care,” Campoverdi explains to PEOPLE. “President Trump needs to think about how his disastrous policies are going to affect women and women’s health. And holding him accountable for that is something that I plan to do and to do very boldly. Where I come from, there’s no other way than to speak truth to power. I don’t come from the privilege of being able to be quiet, and I’m not intimidated by that at all.”

RELATED VIDEO: Watch: Natasha Stoynoff Breaks Silence, Accuses Donald Trump of Sexual Attack

Campoverdi says that as someone who was raised by a single mother, who has been on welfare and who was “the scholarship kid” at the different universities she’s attended (which includes Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government), she’s “understood these issues in a very first-hand way.”

But when it comes to her family battle with breast cancer and all the heartache and trauma that has come with it, “My experience isn’t unique,” she says. “Most women have experiences around their health … and a lot of women have experiences that really pull into focus exactly the real-life implications of a lot of the issues that are on the table in Washington right now.”

FROM COINAGE: This Is How Much It Would Cost to Paint the White House (And More Crazy Facts)

As a woman and a feminist, she says, “I take my own personal responsibility to speak up and to be a voice on these issues — but I also encourage other women to do the same. Because just one voice isn’t enough and where we’re really able to have power in Washington and really move the needle is if it’s a chorus of voices. And I think you see the power of that in the Women’s March and the Women’s Strike.”

Campoverdi was still hard at work on International Women’s Day, but she spent the day visiting with a group of women who participated in the strike.

“We spoke about these issues and everyone shared their experiences and really supported each other in taking a stand and being a voice within our own respective industries. Because this is not a fight just for those in politics — this is a fight for everyone, whether you’re in entertainment or business or entrepreneurship or health or education. And so supporting each other and encouraging each other to own ourselves really publicly and loudly and to continue the drum beat is I think the best thing we can do right now.”

For her part, Campoverdi plans to carry the drum beat for affordable health care straight to Capitol Hill.

“And that means keeping the pressure on Republicans, that means keeping the pressure on President Trump, and also using every megaphone possible to hold folks accountable to the realities of what a lack of access to health care really means and what’s really at stake,” she says.

14 Badass Girl Athletes Show Off Their Game Faces

The 2015 Women’s World Cup begins on June 6, and to commemorate the occasion, the clothing brand Wildfang is showcasing some badass young female soccer players.

The company’s CEO Emma McIlroy teamed up with photographer Andrea Corradini to create “#GameFace,” a series of fierce photos of 14 athletes ages 5 to 14. “We are beyond excited about the Women’s World Cup. It’s one of the most amazing moments in sports and women get to take center stage,” McIlroy told The Huffington Post, adding, “We wanted to look forward to the next generation of female footballers and, as you can see, the future of the sport is in good hands.”

The creators reached out to local soccer coaches in Portland, Oregon and invited their young female players to show off their “game faces,” which they define on the Wildfang website as “their most authentic moment, right before they stepped out onto the pitch.”

gameface
Tess, 11: “Cheetahs are my favorite animal — they’re almost as fast as I am.”

Unsure if anyone would show up to the photo shoot, McIlroy and Corradini were pleasantly surprised when over a dozen bold, young athletes stopped by — most coming right before or immediately after practice. With “zero styling,” each girl proudly displayed her purest game face.

“They showed up with such innocent and fierce pride,” Corradini told The Huffington Post. “They were confident, yet giggly. Independent, yet bonded with their teammates. They had no reservations about just being themselves and letting me photograph them in their most natural and authentic way.”

“We wanted to show young females as they truly are — raw, powerful, beautiful,” McIlroy added, noting that she hoped the photo series would provide a refreshing alternative to the images of “young women in pink and wearing princess dresses” that seem so pervasive in today’s society.

The Wildfang CEO also said she hopes other women can “see a little of themselves” in the hardworking female athletes depicted in #GameFace. “We hope they remind them to be a little bolder and tougher and ultimately be really proud of being who they are,” she continued. “Our hope is these images leave you feeling inspired to go kick ass in your day.”

Keep scrolling to see the badass young women of #GameFace and visit the Wildfang blog to learn more about the series.
