Jessica Knoll talks the explosion of #MeToo, the dangers of performed girl power, and her page-turning new book The Favorite Sister

Jessica Knoll talks the explosion of #MeToo, the dangers of performed girl power, and her page-turning new book The Favorite Sister

It would be tempting to call The Favorite Sister by Jessica Knoll a beach read. After all, it’s about a group of five women — Brett, Stephanie, Kelly, Lauren, and Jen — who are the stars of Goal Diggers, a reality TV show about young female entrepreneurs. It certainly has all the makings of a great beach read; the book opens with a murder and alternates between the past and the present, switching narrators as you slowly gather information and put the pieces together of what really happened. There are juicy secrets, dramatic catfights, and unexpected twists galore.

But while The Favorite Sister IS an A+ book to read on the beach, it provides so much more than just a few hours of entertainment. It’s a necessary commentary on the ways women can be emotionally abusive to each other. It will make you think twice about those people who rush to claim they support women in public, but act so differently in private. And that’s not to mention how it’ll make you rethink everything you thought you knew about reality TV.

In under 400 pages, Knoll tackles everything from money and ambition to race and sexuality. It’s a tall order, but she’s written an addicting novel about what happens when we want to celebrate women for being go-getters, yet punish them when they actually try to go and get.

I spoke with Knoll about The Favorite Sister and what it was like telling this story during the height of the #MeToo era. Don’t worry, there aren’t any spoilers ahead!

HelloGiggles: I’m sure you get this question a lot, but I have to ask: What’s your relationship with reality TV? Love it? Hate it? Fascinated by it? Somewhere in between?

Jessia Knoll: It’s a strong relationship. I’m not one of those people who thinks that reality TV is the death of intellectual culture, high art, or anything like that. [laughs] I think that we need to balance the light with the dark, and I don’t think anyone, particularly women, should ever feel guilty about consuming something that is maybe not the most thought-provoking material out there. I think we should feel free to enjoy what we enjoy and not feel like we have to apologize for that or make excuses for ourselves.

I’m a big fan of [reality TV], and I have been for some time. When I started working on my second book, I felt really tapped out in terms of material, because I had used so much of my own life in my first book. They were rerunning the first season of The Real Housewives of New York City, and I was watching it, and I was like, This is so rife with drama and tension. It occurred to me that this would be a great setting for my next novel, and that I know these women so well, and I know their relationships so well, that I could borrow a little bit from them.

HG: Reality TV is such a different viewing experience.

JK: I think it’s very interesting that it’s so manipulated, and yet we still call it reality TV. That turned out to be a very prescient medium given where we find ourselves today with the first reality TV president; the way people are simply able to say, That’s not true, it’s fake news. Like if you say it, it just becomes true. Facts don’t matter. To me, that is very much playing off the reality TV culture.

HG: It’s a culture where every little thing, whether us viewers realize it or not, comes from a place of manipulation.

JK: Right. Yes. These are people’s real reactions to being put in these very highly-orchestrated and manipulated scenarios.

HG: The five Goal Diggers each see the world very differently. They have such different approaches to business and ambition and success and being a strong woman. Can you talk a little bit about forming their world views, and how you balanced such distinct opinions?

JK: The whole trick of it was, the show itself is purporting to be this new model of reality TV that’s the new guard of millennial women. It’s going to portray strong women, empowered women, women who support each other and build each other up. And it’s supposed to be the fresh take on reality TV that we’ve never seen before. Because mostly we’re seeing women who maybe have fabulous lives, but the only reason they have those fabulous lives is because they’re funded by men, and they’re conniving and backstabbing and all of these things. So Goal Diggers is like, We are gonna set the new tone for reality TV. The intentions are pure, and it turns out that people don’t want to consume that kind of content; it’s not interesting to the viewer. So they — when I say “they,” I mean Jesse the creator, the producers, the editors, everybody involved — start to go against the ideals they espouse at the beginning of the show.

For me, Brett represented the show in what it is on the surface, and Stephanie represented what was actually going on behind the scenes. Brett was the one who was drinking the Kool-aid, who was buying what Jesse was selling. So at first, you’re like, Okay, I’m on Brett’s side, this is great, she’s supportive of other women, she’s cool, she’s body positive. Stephanie is the one who is problematic here. I liked the idea that your perspective on each of them would shift midway through the book, and that you would start to see that Brett and the model of the show are really just a facade, and that Stephanie is the one who is the truth cannon and really shining a light on what’s going on, which is the complete opposite of what the show is espousing.

First finished copy has landed. Anyone who comments gets the chance to win it 😘

HG: Do you think America actually wants to see women succeed and support each other?

JK: I don’t know. You know, we’ve never done it. [laughs] It could be like an experiment. Let’s air a show about women who really like each other and support each other! I mean, listen: Conflict is interesting. No matter who is behind the conflict, conflict is interesting on screen. You need it on scripted shows; you need it on unscripted shows. It provides that drama that you need. I don’t know. [Goal Diggers] is my response to seeing people that I know and that I’ve worked with in the past really glom onto the explosion of #MeToo. And knowing that behind the scenes, how they are in their private lives does not align with this public persona that they’re putting out there as someone who is supportive of women. That hypocrisy drives me crazy. The show is kind of like my invention that gets into that disconnect between the way people present themselves in their public lives vs. what’s really going on in their private lives.

HG: At the end of the book, Kelly makes a comment about how she’s pushing a narrative that serves her and the show better than the truth does. Do you think people are stuck in this area between what we present vs. what life is really like?

JK: Yeah, I do. I think that’s true in not just the performance of feminism. I think that’s a very timely disease of the social media generation. We’re all guilty of presenting this image of ourselves on Instagram or Twitter. And often times, what’s really going on that we’re not captioning, that we’re not taking pictures of, is less glamorous, less funny, less exciting. Everybody has these boring and excruciating Tuesdays where you just can’t bring yourself to do the work that you need to do to get through the day. You’re dragging, you got in a fight with your significant other — you’re not going to put any of that stuff on social media. I think we know the dangers of fully buying into the hype that people put out there, because then it makes you feel worse about your own life. That’s all well-documented.

I do think that something that has emerged over the last year that I noticed, that I respond to in this book that seems like a subculture of that — I was blown away by some of the women I saw posting these inspirational memes about sisterhood and feminism, knowing how they treat other women. It really blew me away. I’m like, Do they know they’re being hypocritical? Or do they not realize that they mistreat other women? I don’t know. Obviously, in the book, Jesse is somewhat aware of the fact that she’s mistreating these women and underpaying them and letting them hang out to dry when they reach their expiration date. But I do think on some level, she buys into her own hype. And I do think that’s what’s going on with some of the real life examples I can think of. I think people do start to buy into their own hype.

HG: Your dedication at the very beginning of the book is intriguing: “For women who know that feeling.” Who are those women?

JK: That is a nod to the section where Stephanie’s talking about why she even signed up for this reality show, and how Jesse seduced her into it. She was sucked in and didn’t know how to get out of it alive. She didn’t know how to get out of it without really hurting her brand, really hurting the identity she created on the show. She starts talking about how when Jesse is unhappy with you, or when Jesse makes up her mind about someone and she’s not shining her light on you anymore, it’s this awful feeling.

That was born from a conversation I was having with someone about the book and being like, I’m writing a book about the way women can be really emotionally abusive to other women, and I’m scared to publish it in this era. We started sharing war stories about our respective female bosses. She was describing a scenario where she was left out of a really key social gathering that happened after work, and she was like, You know that feeling, when a woman has turned her back on you? And I was like, Yes, it is the worst. Your stomach just drops. And the way she said it, I was like, Women know this feeling. So that’s where the dedication came from.

HG: Ugh. Yes. I know that feeling.

JK: I’ve known the feeling for a long time. I’ve known it since middle school. You know, when girls decide they’re going to ostracize you. I think it’s a more painful feeling than being broken up with, than a guy breaking your heart. There’s something so specific about feeling betrayed by another woman that just cuts me to the core.

HG: You mentioned you were nervous about publishing The Favorite Sister in this era. What has the reaction been like?

JK: I was worried about it, and then I started thinking about it more. I started thinking about how I was gonna position the book when it came out. Something that occurred to me, that I think has occurred to other people as well, is the culture that breeds these men who violate women in all of these abhorrent ways also breeds this mistrust and competition and posturing among women. I don’t think that is something we are born with, I don’t think it’s a question of nature. I think we are nurtured to be like that. I think men pit women against each other. I think the culture pits women against each other.

After I made that connection, I started seeing it everywhere. I started seeing it on my TV, I started seeing it in conversations I had with other men. And I realized this is something that if we want to change, we have to recognize it. Because now, when I recognize it, whenever that starts happening, I’m like, Oh, hell no, and I change the channel. If it’s happening in a conversation with a guy, I refuse to rise to it, or I call it out. So I’m glad I did a little soul searching about that and worked that out for myself. I always want to be part of the solution, not the problem.

HG: How can we own being ambitious women?

JK: During one of the awards shows this past winter, there was an actress who got up and gave a speech about the #TimesUp movement, saying all of these necessary and really raw truths. And I got a text message from a guy friend, commenting negatively on her appearance. In the past, even though it would have made me uncomfortable, I wouldn’t want to have made this guy feel uncomfortable, so I would have engaged with it. And I looked at [the text], and I’m like, She’s up here talking about all the fucking women in this room who have been sexually assaulted and harassed and belittled and undermined and underpaid by these rich white dudes, and all you have to say is that she doesn’t look good?

That is so fucked up! No! So I didn’t say anything. And 24 hours later, he followed up and was like, I guess you didn’t like that. And I was like, Well, actually, I don’t like talking about women’s appearances when they’re saying something important and thoughtful. The focus shouldn’t be on their appearance, good or bad. I hate that so much. Writing this book made me more aware of how much of a focus there is on women’s appearances and how it does play into ambition. It really is a distraction to think about all the energy we waste worrying about how we look, what we eat. Men don’t feel like they have to look a certain way in order to get everything they want out of life. I just want the same for women.

Now, the new pressure — Stephanie obviously takes issue with this — is to look like you’re not wearing makeup. To look like you haven’t had your hair done. To look like you haven’t put any effort into your outfit. And it’s so exhausting, because all of that takes so much work, so much money, so much time. Or, if you’re not born with those genes, if you want to try and achieve that effect, it does require all of those things. Again, it’s a distraction. It’s like, Why do I want to waste my brain power and my energy on my appearance, when it could be on something that’s so much bigger and more meaningful?

HG: You write bravely about sensitive topics in both The Favorite Sister and your first novel, Luckiest Girl Alive. How do you find the courage to write so openly?

JK: There’s so much solitude involved in the act of writing. It’s a long, drawn-out process. So when you’re working on it, there’s a part of you that intellectually and logically knows that people are actually going to read this. [laughs] People who know you, and people who might suspect you’re writing about them — all of that is present in the back of your mind. But when you’re by yourself for hours and hours on end, day in and day out, the focus is not on that. You’re alone with yourself, you’re able to be honest with yourself.

It’s only after you’ve written it where I feel like the bravery comes in. To be like, Okay, I’m actually going to allow this to be published. Okay, I’m actually going to allow this to go out. When you’re actually doing it, you don’t really need to be brave. You need to give yourself permission to just write. Because otherwise, you’ll never get it done. It’s so hard to do anyway, and if you’re putting extra shackles on yourself, forget it. It’s just impossible. But the fear of exposure and feeling very vulnerable and having to go through with it anyway, that comes in later. That comes in when you’re closer to the actual publish date.

Andy Cohen called me this morning to tell me he loved the book and ima need a vitals check 💀 💀 💀

A post shared by Jessica Knoll (@jessicaknollauthor) on

HG: What are you reading right now? And what’s your favorite book that you’ve read this year?

JK: Right now I’m reading The Outsider by Stephen King. But my favorite book I’ve read this year is Michelle McNamara’s I’ll Be Gone in the Dark. I just loved that. It was the first time in a while that I had read something about a horrific crime, but there was still so much compassion in how she wrote. I found that to be such a refreshing combination. It really made me think, as a writer, about the kind of writer that I want to be. I love books that simultaneously entertain me and inspire me to be better.

The Favorite Sister is now available wherever books are sold.

8 Summer Shows You Need to Watch While Your Favorite Series Are on Hiatus

Ah, summer. The days are longer, the weather is warmer, and all your favorite TV shows are off the air for three months.

Since we certainly can’t be expected to just sit outside enjoying the sunshine at all times, FANDOM has curated a list of the best shows premiering this season in an effort to help you fill those long summer nights.

Pose

Premieres June 3 on FX
If you regularly quote RuPaul’s Drag Race, you’re probably repeating phrases that were actually first born during the era that Pose is highlighting. That rich history is just one of many reasons to watch Ryan Murphy’s new FX series. (The fact that the cast is primarily made up of trans women of color is another.) The series is set amid the ’80s New York ball scene, featuring LGBTQ outcasts who form their own families and compete within their community on the dance floor. And it’s not just drag queens who were inspired by ball culture — Madonna’s “Vogue” stems from this era too. Strike a pose!

Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger

Premieres June 7 on Freeform
Attention Marvel fans, there’s yet another entry in the insanely popular comic book universe coming to the small screen this summer. Cloak & Dagger follows two teenagers from different backgrounds who just happen to be burdened with superpowers. The pair team up to become a fearless crimefighting duo as they bond over a common tragedy. We can only hope this leads to a burgeoning superhero romance — a tale as old as time that would surely mirror your own experiences with your high school crush.

Sense 8: The Series Finale

Premieres June 8 on Netflix
When Netflix canceled Sense8 back in June 2017, fans just about lost their minds. After an avalanche of hashtags, emails, calls, and campaigns around reviving the series, the streaming service gave in … a little. Although ratings weren’t high enough to revive it for a third season, Netflix decided to greenlight a finale special that will at least tie up loose ends and deal with the major cliffhanger that Season 2 ended on.

Queer Eye

Premieres June 15 on Netflix
Just four months after the reboot of Queer Eye became a surprise smash success for Netflix, the new fab five are already back for a second season of emotional makeovers. Round two will feature Jonathan, Tan, Antoni, Karamo, and Bobby branching out beyond helping just straight men change their lives — the series will focus on both a woman and a transgender contestant for the first time. But keep your tissues handy. Just like the first iteration, the Season 2 forecast predicts a 100% chance of tears.

Luke Cage

Premieres June 22 on Netflix
Good news, Marvel fans. There’s yet another Marvel entry on this list of summer shows thanks to the return of Luke Cage on Netflix. The second season follows Luke’s transition into a hero of Harlem after clearing his name, but his new status as a public figure comes with complications of its own. Mustafa Shakir also joins the cast as the season’s new villain, Bushmaster, who is slated to be the toughest baddie that Luke has faced yet.

GLOW

Premieres June 29 on Netflix
The Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling are heading back into the ring for a second season of GLOW, so if you missed out on the fun of the popular Netflix series last year then it is time to catch up! Season 2 will focus on the launch of the real-life late-night GLOW TV show, which used to be taped in Las Vegas’ Riviera Hotel and Casino. The ’80s-set dramedy will also tackle the timely topic of sexism and sexual abuse, with one of the women having trouble breaking into the boys’ club of the production world and another becoming a victim of sexual harassment.

The Innocents

Premieres August 24 on Netflix
If you can’t get enough of supernatural love stories, then Cloak & Dagger isn’t the only show that needs to go on your watchlist. Netflix is also taking a stab at the genre with its upcoming drama The Innocents. The teens at the center of the series run away from home in order to be together, but the supernatural gift that one possesses ends up unleashing a force that could divide them forever. Nobody said love was easy.

Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan

Premieres August 31 on Amazon
Harrison Ford, Alec Baldwin, Ben Affleck, and Chris Pine have all played Jack Ryan on the big screen in the past, but this time it’s John Krasinski (A Quiet Place) who will be portraying the superspy in an Amazon adaptation of the Tom Clancy tale. The 10-episode series follows Ryan’s journey from his CIA desk job to helping prevent a terrorist attack. Amazon must have faith in its new series because it already greenlit a second season back in April — four months ahead of the series premiere.

The Weekend Reset: Sports betting, the return of an old favorite, and the makings of a perfect party.

It’s Friday. Looking for something to switch your weekend up, or to give you an excuse to relax a little? That’s what the Weekend Reset is for. Each week contributor Tim Johnstone pulls together five things to get your weekend started. Could be something to read or watch, something to eat or listen to, or even something to do. Enjoy the weekend fellas.

READ: The Supreme Court and sports betting – some perspective.

The SCOTUS upended a 25 year old law that outlawed sports betting outside of Las Vegas. This, obviously, is huge news and the impact it will have moving forward is still being figured out. This will get you some idea of what’s at stake. (photo credit)

PLAY: Go climb a tree and swing on some ropes.

Chances are there is at least one ropes course in your area. They have become increasingly popular over the last decade as people search out new avenues of recreation. They are common with corporate team building events. And they do a great deal for your self-esteem. Even if you are not a fan of heights, in order to play on one of these you need to be secured at all times. Safety is the first thing you learn before you even climb up. If you can remind yourself that you are secure, you should be able to do a great deal more than you ever thought possible. Once you are up on the course you have a really terrific selection of methods of crossing from one platform or another. They are challenging for many, but confidence comes quickly and the experience is quite rewarding. So. Much. Fun. (photo credit)

BINGE: Karate Kid version 2.0

Picking up the Karate Kid story 30 years on, Cobra Kai is a YouTube Red offering that has people losing their shit. This, of course, is a good thing and we thank Dappered reader Brandon D for the hook-up.

EAT: Party Prep 101 – How to arrange a charcuterie and cheese board.

With all due respect to my vegan friends, nobody doesn’t like a good charcuterie board at a gathering. Along with crudite, they pair well with cocktails, beer and wine. Heck, even if you loathe olives, there is plenty else to appreciate and enjoy. Use this as a basic formula and substitute meats (Basque chorizo, Prosciutto, dry cured Salami for example), cheeses (Manchego is mandatory at my house, Stilton, Burrata), and assorted fruits and other items. Soon enough you will be a pro.

LISTEN: Indispensable party favor.

The reason you can’t buy one of the most beloved hip hop albums of all time is that it is stuck in legal limbo. This is not what you generally hear from the genre these days. De La Soul blurred the boundaries between hip hop and funk, jazz and pop, with kitschy pop culture samples and a sense of joy. If you are looking for a sure fire way to provide the perfect soundtrack for a Spring or Summer event, this is it.

Tim Johnstone is Dappered’s music correspondent as well as our resident gatherer of all things interwebs related. He’s pretty sure he should lay off the horror movies but he’s afraid to.

Bestselling Author Jessica Knoll Is Back with a Real Housewives-Inspired Page-Turner,The Favorite Sister

Fans of Real Housewives in need of a summer beach read, rejoice — Jessica Knoll has got you covered. The New York Times bestselling author’s debut novel, Luckiest Girl Alive, was the breakout hit of 2015, instantly topping the bestseller list for months and garnering praise from celebs such as Jessica Alba, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Reese Witherspoon, the last of whom even optioned the film rights.

Now Knoll is back with a second page-turner, stomach-churner of a book, The Favorite Sister. The smart and sharply written thriller is sure to be the beach read you’ll hear everyone raving about this summer, and it’s already on the radar of celebs like UnREAL star Shiri Appleby and former 2 Broke Girls star Beth Behrs.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

The plot centers around two fiercely competitive sisters who are cast on Goal Diggers, a Real Housewives of New York-esque reality TV show about ambitious, entrepreneurial women who will do anything to succeed — even commit murder.

After one of the sisters ends up dead, the plot unfolds through the eyes of the show’s stars to reveal who killed her, how and why. Reading this book is as addictive as scrolling through your Instagram or Twitter feed, and certainly as binge-worthy as any reality TV marathon.

Knoll admitted to NPR that she’s spent a fair amount of time indulging in the “guilty pleasure” of binging reality TV herself, which certainly shows in her extraordinarily familiar — yet still surprising — RHONY-inspired characters. “It’s an homage to them. I love these women. I really do,” she told NPR’s Lulu Garcia-Navarro.

“For whatever you have to say about them, they are dynamic women. They have strong personalities. They’re loud. And we don’t get to see women act like that very often in our culture, so I think it’s something worth celebrating.”

The novel, out May 15, is already popping up on summer reading lists — you can pick up a copy at your local bookstore or order it online here.

#MeToo Invades Cannes, One of Harvey Weinstein’s Favorite Hunting Grounds

Andreas Rentz/Getty

CANNES, France – Harvey Weinstein was too arrogant to realize the women of cinema would one day symbolically slay him and bar him from the mythic gates of the Croisette.

Even if Weinstein had tried to crash the Palais Saturday night, he’d have been blocked—literally. Eighty-two actresses and female directors, led by Cannes jury head Cate Blanchett, massed on the famous red-carpeted steps, linking arms in a fiery protest for equal pay, equal opportunity, and an end to the sexual exploitation of women.

The women marched in solidarity with writer-director Eva Husson, 41, the only female French director with a film in competition at Cannes, just before her premiere. And the number 82 represented the total number of films by female directors that have screened in competition at Cannes since 1946, compared to 1,645 films directed by men.

Score Meghan Markle’s Favorite White Sneakers for Under $100

It’s nearly impossible to overstate our love of white sneakers. Versatile and comfy, they’re the footwear phenomenon we hope will never go away. One person we’re pretty sure shares our love of fashion’s current MVP trend? None other than future royal Meghan Markle. Prince Harry’s bride-to-be has been spotted in Reebok’s Classic Leather white sneaker (which retail for $ 75; nordstrom.com, amazon.com, asos.com, and urbanoutfitters.com) on several occasions, often wearing them to and from yoga class.

It’s easy to see why Meghan is a devoted fan of the style. With spring in full swing, you’d be hard pressed to find an outfit these kicks couldn’t pair with. From distressed jeans to floral dresses, they go with everything — and make a cool (and comfortable) alternative to traditional flats. Plus, they’re an ultra wearable way to get in on the chunky “dad sneaker” trend, without actually looking like your dad.

And best of all? They can easily be dressed up or down – they look as polished with Markle’s skinny jeans as they do with her high-end bag, which is why they’re a favorite for everyone from celebrities to regular girls who want to look cute on a Saturday without being held back by their shoes.

RELATED PHOTOS: Meghan Markle’s Perfectly Polished Outfit Formula Is the Only Look You’ll Ever Need!

Fashion’s obsession with this shoe has yet to show any signs of slowing down. And with Meghan cosigning on this style, suffice it to say: the white sneaker is bound to stick around for a while. Long may it reign.

A Loving Look at Loki: Our Favorite MCU Scoundrel and Self-Serving Sociopath

SPOILER ALERT: Warning, this article about Loki contains spoilers from Avengers: Infinity War. Proceed at your own risk.

Sometimes a villain, sometimes a hero, but always entertaining, Loki is one of the most compelling characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Since the God of Mischief didn’t make it out of Avengers: Infinity War alive — or even out of the first scene for that matter — let’s take a loving look back at his time in the MCU and discuss what made him such a fun bad guy.

Tom Hiddleston as Loki
Tom Hiddleston as Loki

As a master of trickery, we never quite knew what to expect from Loki. He’s ultimately self-serving, but he’s shown glimmers of compassion for others that had him flip-flopping from bad to good and back again.

The character kept us on our toes and captivated us with his comical quips while simultaneously sowing destruction as a full-blown sociopath. And that’s no easy feat.

A History of Loki

MCU fans first met Loki in Thor, which featured him sabotaging his brother’s coronation by letting Frost Giants enter Asgard. After Thor vowed to seek vengeance on the group, his father Odin banished him to Earth and Loki wound up on the throne for a short time. But the God of Thunder eventually returned and ended his brother’s reign.

Never one to pass up an opportunity to further himself at the expense of others, Loki soon made a deal with the Mad Titan Thanos, who gave him The Chitauri Scepter. He then wielded the power to command the Chitauri invasion of Earth. And he may have gotten away with it too if it hadn’t been for those pesky Avengers who saved the day during the Battle of New York. Big bro Thor sent him back to Asgard, where Odin imprisoned him for his crimes.

But you can’t keep a not-so-good man down. Thor eventually freed Loki from prison in order to get his help defeating the Dark Elves and their leader, Malekith. That’s because they killed the brothers’ mother, Frigga, during the Sacking of Asgar. This is one of the first times fans saw Loki caring for someone other than himself, as he genuinely mourned his mother and teamed up with his brother for revenge.

While confronting the Dark Elves in Svartalfheim, Loki appeared to betray his brother once again by cutting off Thor’s hand and turning Jane Foster over to Malekith. But, in fact, the God of Mischief deceived again; Loki’s betrayal of Thor was actually a holographic projection that lured Malekith into a false sense of security. But he didn’t stop there! Loki then faked his own death and secretly returned to Asgard to impersonate Odin and sit on the throne.

Loki seemingly dies from his wounds
Thor thinks his brother died during battle

When Thor: Ragnarök hit theaters in 2017, the titular character returned to Asgard and uncovered his brother’s latest deception. This led the two to pair up once again to find their father. The siblings found Odin just in time to witness his death, which allowed their long-lost sister Hela to return from banishment and wage war against the Nine Realms.

While it was (as usual) hard to tell which side Loki was aligning himself with while the brothers were in Sakaar dealing with the Grandmaster, he ultimately sided with Thor and the Revengers in a final battle against Hela. The God of Mischief summoned Surtur, who defeated Hela by causing Ragnarök. After the fight, Loki stayed by Thor’s side and supported his ascension to the throne.

Loki and Thor search for Odin together
The brothers search for Odin together

Since Ragnarök destroyed Asgard, Thor piled the surviving citizens of his realm into a ship and planned to take them to Earth. But they were intercepted by Thanos and his Black Order. That’s because Loki grabbed the Tesseract on his way out of Asgard, and the Mad Titan wanted the Space Stone that it contained.

Loki proved once again that he did have a love for his brother, offering the Tesseract to Thanos in order to stop him from killing Thor. But, always up to something, he then promised to serve Thanos before trying to stab him with a dagger. Alas, it turned out to be a big mistake. The Mad Titan snapped Loki’s neck, and we lost the God of Mischief for good.

Loki gives the Tesseract to Thanos
Loki gives the Tesseract to Thanos

And while it looks like the other characters we lost in Avengers: Infinity War could be revived in the next installment, we fear we have seen the last of Loki as he was killed before Thanos wiped out half the population of the universe. But we’ll always have the memories of the many, many times he kept Thor and the Avengers on their toes and we’ll fondly remember watching him become one of our favorite movie villains of all time.

And who knows, he IS the God of Mischief. Perhaps his death was yet another ruse and he’ll return. Only time will tell.

The Cool-Girl Versions of Your Favorite Shoe Styles

Cool girls understand the importance of a good shoe, which can take any outfit to the next level without much effort on your part. After all, when you’re donning an amazing pair of shoes, you can keep the rest of your outfit simple and fuss-free—which is something we’re definitely on board with.

In every stylish woman’s arsenal are six essential shoe styles: booties, flat sandals, sneakers, pumps, mules, and flats. You probably already own several pairs of each, in basic shapes and hues, so we’re here to present you with something a bit different: the cool-girl versions of these essential shoe styles. We looked to the likes of Zara, Nike, Ganni, Isabel Marant, and Rag & Bone, to name a few, and found an array of footwear options that are sure to make you (and everyone else) do a double take. We’re talking unexpected details, statement-making hues, and unique heel shapes, among the noteworthy characteristics. So if you’re looking to upgrade your shoe collection, you’ve come to the right place.

Mules went from being a trend to a staple style a few years ago, and we’re constantly on the hunt for fresh, new iterations. Luckily, they’re not hard to find.

See what we meant by cool-girl shoes?

You should never part with your basic black Chelsea boots, but a Western or colorful sock pair will do wonders for your wardrobe.

Now is the time to invest in a pair of interesting, on-trend flat sandals for spring and summer, because you can always just recycle your neutral ones from last year.

Pumps are as classic as it gets, but truth be told, they could use a little personality. Consider a sculptural heel or of-the-moment pastel hue.

It seems like every month there’s a new It sneaker, so take our advice and opt for styles that are part classic, part on-trend. That way, they won’t look dated if you’re still wearing them two years from now.

Wearing flat shoes feels so good, and they might as well look as good as they feel, right? Luckily, that’s not a tall order. Flat shoes are cooler than ever these days.

These $35 elastic-waist jeans are my favorite thing ever

by

Lindsay Weiss

posted in Life

I did not receive anything for this endorsement and I bought these jeans myself. I just love them enough to share!

Perhaps a nod to my pregnancy days, but these elastic waist jeans are the freakin’ bomb. They could not be more comfortable for a gal running around after three children, but they do not look like mom jeans. Thanks to the perfectly ripped knees, these actually look cool and they’re soft enough to feel like pajamas vs. denim.

Ripped jeans are sort of the thing now, but they’ve become such a thing that it’s hard to find a pair that isn’t ripped all the way up the thigh. These are slightly more modestly ripped, stopping just above the knee.

I don’t let the elastic waist show on these; I typically wear longer shirts anyway so it’s not an issue. They fit like a glove but aren’t constricting in any way. The elastic waist does hold you in, but is very comfortable.

I would wear these every day if I could and wish they made them in more washes and colors. Shout out to one of my favorite bloggers, Living In Yellow, for showing me these jeans!

Do you have an absolute favorite pair of jeans?

Everyone’s Favorite Olympics Curling Star Showed Up to the Paralympics Opening Ceremony

South Korea’s Kim Eun-jung became a global sensation at the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics, thanks to her curling team’s surprise success, the “Garlic Girls” origin story and Kim’s own very serious game face. On Thursday, she returned to the sports arena — this time to help out at the Paralympics Opening Ceremony, also held in PyeongChang.

For the torch lighting, South Korean wheelchair curling Olympian Seo Soonseok was selected for the honor. Kim, meanwhile, was there to push her teammate’s wheelchair.

Kim first came to the world’s attention as the captain of her country’s women’s curling team as they rose to prominence during February’s Winter Games, despite their underdog status. Called the “Garlic Girls,” the team all hail from the town of Uiseong, well known as a hotbed of garlic production. Kim also goes by the nickname “Annie,” which refers to a Korean brand of yogurt. And she’s easily identifiable by her signature owl-rimmed glasses, which gave rise to plenty of memes during her Winter Olympics.

Ultimately, Kim’s team took home silver in PyeongChang. Perhaps her luck will transfer over to Seo and his team as the Paralympics kick off.

Jon Stewart’s Courtside Reaction Is the Internet’s New Favorite Distressed Sports Fan Meme

The title for the latest most distraught sports fan goes to Jon Stewart, who was just caught freaking out on camera at a basketball game.

The comedian and former host of The Daily Show was courtside at Madison Square Garden to watch the New York Knicks face off against the Golden State Warriors on Monday. In the third quarter, the Warriors’ rim protector JaVale McGee shocked fans when he swished an 11-foot desperation fadeaway jumper. That’s when Stewart — who regularly appears at random moments to express shock — lost it. Thankfully, the Internet wasted zero time in turning his pain into comedy.

He was reacting to the third-quarter moment in the game before the Warriors ultimately crushed the Knicks, 125-111. Twitter users have been turning Stewart’s helpless expression — on par with Edvard Munch’s The Scream — into some good old social media hilarity.

Not only has Stewart’s “what just happened” look become the face of every New York Knicks fan’s distress amid the team’s losing streak, people are using it to communicate all kinds of personal anguish.

See the very best of what Twitter users had to offer below.

One user got really meta with it.

You got to give it the guy for still serving up the comedy gold without even trying.

Keep cozy this winter with 5 favorite stretchy baby carriers

by

Joyce Slaton

posted in Products

Whether you live in a location with cold wintry blowing winds or nonstop ice and snow, a stretchy baby carrier is just the thing to keep your newborn cozy. Here are our 5 faves for the winter months, and videos that show how to put each on, so you can pick the method that appeals to you.

1. Boba Wrap

So beloved by BabyCenter moms that it was a Best Baby Carrier finalist for 2017, this snuggly wrap is made of 95 percent cotton with 5 percent spandex for a little stretch, and holds your baby from birth to 30 pounds or 36 months, whichever comes first. Like many wrap carriers, the Boba takes a little practice to get on comfortably. Parents say about the Boba: “Criss cross, cross tie. Done. I can get this wrap on while holding the baby, or if I’m lucky enough to be able to put him down, i can get it on within 30 seconds.” “My 2 month old loves this wrap and I take him everywhere in it; the grocery store, baseball games, around the house, etc. It’s helped so much during his fussy times, we cannot live without it.”

Here’s how to put it on:

Buy it: $ 40

2. Moby Wrap

Another Best Baby Carrier finalist for 2017, the Moby, like the Boba, takes some practice to get right. Once you do, though, you may find yourself using the Moby well beyond the newborn phase since it holds toddlers up to 35 pounds. The 100-percent cotton fabric is washable, so no worries if a spit-up situation occurs. Parents say about the Moby: “Instantly makes a crying baby go to sleep. Baby was very, very cozy in there.” “I love that there are so many different ways to wear it so that it can be used for a long time with your growing baby.”

Here’s how to put it on — basic instructions start at :55:

Buy it: $ 45

3. Boppy ComfyFit

The newest carrier on this list folds into its own little pouch to make diaper bag or stroller basket take-alongs that much easier, and has the same comfy stretch as yoga pants. It’s machine washable, allows you to carry your baby from 8 to 35 pounds in the front-facing-in or front-facing-out positions, and has a click-to-fasten adjustable waistbelt that handles waists of up to 56 inches, which makes it easier to fit most parents and share one carrier between every caregiver in the house. Parents say: “This carrier provides great head support while still keeping him close.” “It’s a happy medium between the all-fabric stretchy wraps and the bulky harness ones.”

Here’s how to put it on. Since the ComfyFit is so new, there’s no English-language instructional video on YouTube at this time, but you can figure it out with this Italian-language video:

Buy it: $ 70

4. Baby K’Tan

Parents love the K’Tan because it’s relatively easy to put on — you put it on kind of like a halter top, and only have to wrap the waist section, so the fabric doesn’t drag on the ground like it can with wraps with longer tails. It does mean, however, that you have to take the K’Tan’s sizing seriously, and if you and your baby’s other caregivers have different-sized bodies, you may have to get more than one carrier to fit everyone. You can use the K’Tan’s sash as a carrying pouch to wrap it up in your diaper bag. Parents say: “I wear this out like an infinity scarf, and when kiddo gets hungry, I slip the loops on (just follow instructions in package) and pop her in.” “When nothing else calms down the baby, I put her in this and it does the trick.”

How to put it on for your newborn baby:

Buy it: $ 50

5. Ergobaby 4D Stretch Baby Wrap Carrier

Parents love this carrier, which they say is more breathable (yet still cozy) than other carriers, and doesn’t stretch out as you wear your baby. Suitable for newborns and children from 8 to 35 pounds, the 4D is often compared to the Moby in terms of quality and wear. You’ll love the pocket on the wrap that holds the essentials so you can leave the house bag-free on occasion. Parents say: “I like that I can put it on and keep it on all day and take my son in and out of it without rewrapping.” “It is very easy to use! I love the option that it folds back into pouch for easy, clean storage.”

Here’s how to put the Ergobaby Wrap on a newborn:

Buy it: $ 80

U.S. Men’s Skating Favorite Nathan Chen Is Off to a Rough Start at the Olympics

The first skating event of the PyeongChang Olympics began Friday — even before Opening Ceremonies — and the early morning timing may be throwing athletes off their game.

While skating competitions generally occur at night, at this year’s Games they’re scheduled for 10 o’clock in the morning Korea time to accommodate the time zone difference with much of the U.S. That shift may take some getting used to, as the first competitors to take the ice in the men’s portion of the team competition struggled to land their jumps. The only top contender in the category to skate cleanly was Japan’s Shoma Uno, who led the men.

The men’s competition was followed by pairs, won by Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov, Olympic Athletes from Russia (OAR), followed by Canada’s Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford. Germany’s Aljona Savchenko and Bruno Massot finished third. The competition provided a first glimpse of the OAR athletes, who have been cleared to compete following the International Olympic Committee’s ban on Russia’s participation in the PyeongChang Games because of doping violations during the 2014 Sochi Olympics. OAR skaters could not wave the Russian flag or wear uniforms displaying “Russia” or the country’s flag.

Read more: How to Tell the Difference Between the 6 Figure Skating Jumps You’ll See at the Olympics

It’s only the second time team skating has been an Olympic event, in which countries are awarded points based on their rankings — 10 points for first place, nine for second, etc. Once the men’s scores and pairs’ scores were added, Canada led the team event followed by the U.S. and Japan. Those three countries, along with the fourth and fifth place finishers OAR and Israel, will move on to the medal round on Feb. 11 and 12.

The U.S.’s Nathan Chen, a gold medal favorite in the individual men’s event that starts on Feb 16, finished fourth after an uncharacteristically error-filled program in which he fell on the triple axel, doubled a planned quadruple jump and downgraded a combination jump. Israel’s Alexei Bychenko finished second and Canada’s Patrick Chan finished third.

Read more: How the North Korean Figure Skating Team Trained for the Winter Olympics — in Canada

Chen said the early morning competition time likely played a role in how he performed, although he has been rehearsing with earlier training times back home in California. “The seven o’clock practice was a little rough,” he said. “With the time change, it’s not a big deal, I just need to recalculate everything in my head.”

He admitted to nerves as well, but said “having this experience allows me to do better next time. I’m glad I got the opportunity to at least come out here, get the program down and learn from it. All I can do is try to analyze it and then just let it go and move on.”

Alexa and Chris Knierim of the U.S. also finished fourth among the pairs, giving the U.S. enough points to stand in second place behind Canada.

While skating federation officials have been moving toward team events to encourage more camaraderie among the characteristically internally focused skaters, the skaters themselves have been of two minds about having to compete in an additional event over a short period of time. For some, it’s an opportunity to shake out the Olympic jitters and get used to competing under the Olympic rings. For others, it’s an added physical and mental challenge to perform at their peak twice in a matter of days.

One benefit of the team event format, however, is the personal cheering squad at rink-side. U.S. skaters Bradie Tennell, Mirai Nagasu, Maia and Alex Shibutani, Adam Rippon and Vincent Zhou filled the USA box to support their teammates; the ladies and ice dance team short program will be on Feb. 11.

What Are Your Favorite Stores for Winter Coats?

favorite stores for winter coats

Alas, I think I’ve waited too long to do my Hunt for winter coats, as there are only lucky sizes left for everything I like. So instead, let’s have a discussion about three things:

 • where would you go if you’re looking for an AFFORDABLE BUT DEPENDABLY WARM COAT?
 • where would you go if you were looking for a STATEMENT COAT (that’s slightly affordable)?
 • where would you go if you were buying an INVESTMENT COAT?

This post contains affiliate links and Corporette® may earn commissions for purchases made through links in this post. For more details see here. Thank you so much for your support!

Pictured at top: pink / blue / brown. Oooh, this one is also lovely but is down to one size and even at 75% off it’s still $ 2K+.

My answers would be these — but I’m really curious what you guys would say. (For those of you who have loved J.Crew coats in the past, would you still put them in the first category?)

As far as statement coats go, I never got a ton of wear out of it but I was pretty thrilled to find a fake fur coat for $ 10 at a random thrift store in Evanston, IL during my college years — it’s probably still hanging in my parents’ basement. I also still regret losing my grandmother’s blue tweed coat — I’m still hopeful I’ll find it one day. Finally: it wasn’t a winter coat, but rather a lighterweight jacket that was a gray check lined with a red satin that I bought on a trip to Germany one summer when I only packed summer clothes, somehow forgetting that 70 degrees is jacket weather, at least for someone who’s always freezing like me. It was bought during my skinnier years, and it’s one of those things I stubbornly hang onto, even though I haven’t fit into it in years.

How about you — where are your favorite places to go for winter coats? Have you bought any great coats recently (regale us with your sale stories, ladies!)! Have you ever had a statement coat that you were super happy to have?

Psst: we’ve also talked in the past about what to look for in a great winter coat, and rounded up washable winter coats over on our blog for working moms.

We rounded up our favorite stores for winter coats in three categories: affordable and dependably warm coats, STATEMENT coats, and investment coats.

James Corden Fires Back at Donald Trump Jr.’s Grammys Tweet: You’re the ‘Second Favorite Child’

CBS

A still-hungover James Corden returned from hosting the Grammy Awards in New York on Sunday to tape a new episode of his Late Late Show Monday night. And he had a message for those who didn’t appreciate his Fire and Fury sketch.

When Hillary Clinton made a surprise appearance to read an excerpt from Michael Wolff’s book, Corden said she “got the biggest cheer of the night in Madison Square Garden.” But, he added, “some people in Trump’s administration took issue with it,” including U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley and the president’s son, Donald Trump Jr.

“Some of us love music without the politics thrown in it,” Haley tweeted, to which Corden replied, “You can tell your boss, some of us like politics without the Twitter meltdowns thrown in.”

Vladimir Putin’s Least Favorite Filmmaker Returns With a Devastating Portrait of Modern-Day Russia

Leviathan, which was released in 2014, was met with acclaim from critics, but caused a stir with the Russian government. Thirty-five percent of the funding for the film had come from the Russian Ministry of Culture, and yet the less-than-glimmering portrait of the country that the movie presented was not what Putin’s Ministry had had in mind. Russian State Television subsequently shunned the film and pro-Kremlin political scientist Sergey Markov went as far as to brand it “an ideological justification for a genocide of the Russian people.”

Team Clark’s favorite purchases of 2017

The days between Christmas and the New Year are often full of reflection, and it’s no different for Team Clark staffers. While we’re excited to focus on new ways to save money in 2018, we can’t help but look back on the best deals of the year.

Our goal is to serve you with the very best deals, tips and advice to help you save more and spend less.

Here’s the deal: We love to save money, too!

The best things Team Clark spent money on this year

Here’s a look at our favorite purchases of the year:

Beth: Reebok shoes for $ 30

Reebok shoe deal

This year I bought comfy Reebok sneakers with memory foam soles on Prime Day. It’s probably the most significant purchase I made for myself this year because I invested in the idea of being more active — and so far I’ve followed through. These are also the first athletic shoes I feel comfortable wearing casually when I’m not exercising. Here’s to bigger steps in 2018!

RELATED: Review: Aldi’s $ 14.99 sneakers

Charis: Sectional couch for $ 350

Costco sectional couch deal

All of our furniture pieces were hand-me-downs — until this purchase. One Saturday night while my husband and I were at Costco, (you know, because that’s where normal couples go for date night), we saw this floor model with the $ 499.97 sign. If you’re familiar with any of Clark’s tips for saving money at Costco, you’ll know that anything that ends in $ .97 is a closeout!

As we were longingly gazing at it, a manager came over and asks us if we wanted to buy it, and says he’ll knock an additional $ 100 off. I’m not sure if it was because we were taking too long to decide or he was ready to close the store for the night, but he then said he’d knock another $ 50 off, making the final price $ 350. Well, we couldn’t refuse. So now we are the proud owners of a very comfortable brown sectional couch from Costco, once $ 899, purchased for $ 350!

Chelsea: Switched from Verizon to Metro PCS

MetroPCS switch cheaper than Verizon

Even with our Verizon “grandfathered plan” we were spending a fortune. Our Verizon bill was $ 180 for two lines with 2G data, and we went over every month. With MetroPCS, our bill is only $ 80 for unlimited everything! MetroPCS provides everything we need and saves us $ 100 each month (or more if you consider the potential data overage fees).

Craig: Free rental car

How to score a free car rental

About two months ago, I received an e-mail regarding my available rewards points after I had just purchased a flight. I still needed to rent a car, so I decided to see how much I would have to pay if I used both money and points. I was shocked to see that I had more than enough points for a three-day rental of a full-sized car (Nissan Altima). No money was required at all, as all taxes and fees were included; and there was absolutely no hassle.

Grace: Shark Rocket ultra-light upright vacuum for $ 130

Shark vacuum deal

I saved $ 60 on this vacuum, and it has been great for a neat freak like me — especially during the last months of pregnancy.

Joel: Rad Power Bikes Radwagon for $ 1,200

Bike commuter deal

I got lucky and found someone selling a new one on eBay. They are normally $ 1,599 but currently on sale for $ 1,349.

This electric bike has been such an awesome addition to my life. It’s allowed me to bike to work consistently and use my car less (which means less time spent in traffic). It’s also been SO much fun to put both of my girls on the back of the bike and jet around town. They love the time that we spend biking together. This bike will definitely end up saving me money — but the joy I’ve gained from riding it has actually been the reason I’ve enjoyed this purchase the most.

John: 3 nights at the Waldorf-Astoria Orlando for $ 193/night

Travel deal hotel in Orlando

My favorite purchase of the year was three nights at the Waldorf-Astoria Orlando that I got on Hotwire.com.

We paid $ 193.00 per night before taxes and fees for this 5-star hotel just minutes from all of the Disney attractions.

It was our first trip to Disney as a family to celebrate our daughter’s third birthday, and it was perfect. The hotel (which is very fancy) was less expensive than even the lowest star-rated Disney-operated properties and less than half the price of what it would have cost to stay in one of the fancier Disney resorts. A free shuttle runs to and from the hotel to the Disney parks pretty much on the half-hour all day long. There’s also a Hilton hotel right next door with a 3-acre lazy river pool that you have access to as a Waldorf guest — perfect for downtime when the kids tire of the parks!

Michael: Instant Pot 7-in-1 Pressure Cooker for $ 89 (plus a $ 10 Target gift card)

Instant Pot save money food bill

I’m not usually into kitchen gadgets, but the Instant Pot has been a real timesaver! It’s so quick and easy to use that I’ve cut back on fast food without really trying. I love it so much that I decided to buy one for my parents!

Nicole: OOFOS Recovery Shoes for $ 17

OOFO shoe deal

I could only find these shoes online or at specialty shoe stores for $ 44.95, but T.J. Maxx recently started selling my favorite shoes for only $ 16.99 — what a steal!

These shoes feel like I’m walking on clouds! I have a back injury so the arch support eliminates my back pain, as well as foot and knee pain. While they aren’t the most stylish, they’re definitely the most comfortable! In fact, I wear mine everyday in the spring and summer.

Sally: Two round-trip tickets to Ireland for under $ 900

Dublin travel deal

My husband and I scored an amazing deal on two round-trip tickets from Providence, Rhode Island to Dublin on Norwegian Air for only $ 900 (that’s the average price for only one ticket)! Unfortunately, our original flight was canceled so we arrived a day late. Luckily, money expert Clark Howard told me about a little-known European Union regulation, and our compensation from the airline was more than the cost of the entire trip. We got to travel to Ireland for free, and it was amazing!

Sarah: Audible subscription for $ 9 per month

Amazon Audible

On Prime Day I grabbed a deal on a six month subscription to Audible. I pay $ 8.95 a month instead of the usual $ 14.95 a month.

I like it because I can listen to my some of my school readings while I’m commuting to maximize my time. If I need to finish a chapter quickly, I can speed up the narration. There are also some free books available so I don’t always have to wait for the next month’s credit to start a new book and I can share my book library with my friends for free.

Can I just tell you why 5 is my new favorite age?

by

Deidra Romero

posted in Parenting

Listen close bleary-eyed parents of wild pre-schoolers. I’ve got some amazing news that is going to give you life.

Everyone tells you about the terrible twos, the madness of threenagers, and difficult 4-year-olds, but let me tell you parenting’s best-kept secret: 5-year-olds are so amazing and dare I say … easy??

5 year old boy

Okay, before you get all crazy and start sending me messages on Instagram, let me shoot straight.

Gone are the days of bad communication you had with a young toddler. When “Wa” could mean walk or water and you want to pull out your hair because it is just so hard to explain what “I’ll be right back” means.

5-year-olds have a firm grasp on language. They can think critically and even problem solve. They tell stories in great detail and, for the most part, their lies are really easy to see through.

With a 3-year-old you get epic tantrums and explosive mood swings. Also bedtime can become this awful spiral that takes hours.

happy mom and son

5-year-olds, on the other hand, have tested the limits. They know where the boundaries exist. They even start to show remorse. In general, they want to please you.

The 3-year-old who made you cry turns into something resembling a human being with a conscience. You realize that no, you haven’t spawned a psychopath. Instead of Caillou, your child resembles a character more like Daniel Tiger.

And then there are the 4-year-olds who are much more rational than their 3-year-old selves but still prone to fits and pushing boundaries. Four-year-olds are needy AF. They get tired and refuse naps. Their body is in this sort of limbo state between a child and baby.

But 5-year-olds can dress themselves, get their own snack and even bathe themselves. They know their routine and they thrive on it–but they are also pretty flexible. Plus, 5-year-olds are really funny.

boy with sunglasses on upside downWith my 5-year-old son, I still see traces of baby on his face.

He still lets me cuddle and hold him all the time, but he is also independent in a way that makes me get teary-eyed.

I love seeing him step outside of his comfort zone and introduce himself to someone new. I love it when he asks me permission before jumping on his bed. Somewhere between 4 and 5 he learned a bit of impulse control.

5-year-olds, of course, are still kids. They still have trouble harnessing their inside voices. They still get upset about silly things. And they still get too tired for their own good. But they are able to voice their thoughts and feelings in a way that is truly remarkable.

So to you, mothers and fathers of 3 and 4-year-olds, let me tell you the honest-to-God truth: Parenting a 5-year-old is so much better.

You will stop asking yourself on a daily basis: “What am I doing wrong?” The fruits of your parenting labor will finally pay off. In place of your crazy 3-year-old and demanding 4-year-old will be a precious child with a beautiful imagination, lots of energy, and plenty of words to describe it all.

What Are Your Favorite Office Supplies?

favorite office suppliesWe haven’t talked about this in ages, so I thought we’d have a fun little poll today about your favorite office supplies! Which pen do you swear by? What notebook do you buy again and again? What planner are you prepping for 2018? And, on the techy side, what calendar app do you let run your life? What to do list app are you using? Is there any other office “thing” you just can’t do without? Here’s a handy template for your responses…

 • pen –
 • notebook/notepad –
 • planner –
 • calendar app/program –
 • to do list app/program –
 • other office “thing” you can’t do without –

We’ve talked about favorite pens, the best notebooks, and how to find the best planner for you before, but it’s been a while. For my own $ .02, here are my answers:

This post contains affiliate links and Corporette® may earn commissions for purchases made through links in this post. For more details see here. Thank you so much for your support!

 • penPilot G2 blue
 • notebook/notepadComposition notebooks (with a leather cover I got ages ago)
 • planner – searching (although I bought The Happy Planner for 2018 because I found one for $ 10 and it was pretty and blue)
 • calendar app/program – searching
 • to do list app/program – Just bought Things and LOVE IT, particularly for big picture projects, but it’s early days (and I wish I could edit it on PC). I still like RTM for smaller projects. (I’ve also tried Asana, Trello, Todoist… so far really love Things far more than those.)
 • other office “thing” you can’t do without – I have strong opinions on the best eraser, but no strong opinions elsewhere…

Over to you, readers — what are your favorite office supplies (and office-supply-like apps)? What are you stocking your office with for 2018? (Are you getting them as stocking stuffers for anyone you know?)
