Former Young & the Restless Actor Convicted on Serious Criminal Charges

Absolutely appalling news about a former Young & the Restless actor was reported out of Florida on Friday. Us Weekly, crediting the Cherokee Tribune & Ledger-News, reported that actor Corey Sligh has been convicted on one of two counts of child molestation in Georgia and is facing prosecution in Florida.

More: Is Eileen Davidson Leaving The Young & the Restless for Good?

Sligh was found guilty on one count of molesting a child under the age of 10 in Cherokee County, Georgia. According to district attorney Shannon Wallace, who spoke to the Tribune & Ledger-News, Sligh faces five to 20 years in prison on the felony conviction. His sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 20.

Us Weekly also noted that Bill Bishop, chief assistant state attorney for Okaloosa County, Florida, said that “one count of lewd and lascivious molestation regarding the same girl — which he still faces in Florida — carries a sentence of 25 years to life in prison if he is charged.”

Former NBA Player Tyler Honeycutt Dies From Suicide After Shootout With The Police

According to new reports, the former basketball player, Tyler Honeycutt, died after a standoff with police. The former UCLA Bruins and Sacramento Kings basketball player was 27-years-old.

Josh Rubenstein, a spokesperson for the police department, said to Us Weekly that the police had received a phone call around 5 pm regarding a man who had a gun and was behaving erratically at a Sherman Oaks address.

When the police arrived at the scene, they discovered a man in his late 20’s, and he supposedly began shooting at them. The police shot back, and after several hours, Honeycutt turned the gun on himself.

Mr. Rubenstein stated that it isn’t known if they managed to hit him with gunfire. Before his death, Honeycutt barricaded himself in the house, and SWAT, Crisis Negotiation Team, and MEU, all responded and came in full force to the scene of the crime.

The police had to evacuate around 30 different people and at 2:30 am, the police found Mr. Honeycutt unresponsive inside the house, subsequently pronouncing him dead. You can check out the LAPD’s tweet below:

After the incident went down, the police took to Twitter to say that SWAT had entered the residence and located him. Later on, they claimed that it appeared he had killed himself through a self-inflicted gunshot.

A spokesperson for the LAPD said they had also found a handgun near his body. According to TMZ, his mother was the one who called the police because Tyler was behaving strange and unpredictable.

Honeycutt, perhaps, is most known for playing basketball for the Bruins for two years, from 2009 until 2011, and played in 2011 for the Sacramento Kings.

Tyler only played professionally for one year, before he was assigned to the D-league team, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. He then went on to play with the Russian team, Khimki and won the Eurocup championship. And in 2015-16, he competed in the EuroLeague games and averaged around 6 points per game.

Michael Cohen Hires Former Clinton Aide Lanny Davis

Michal Cizek/Getty

Washington, D.C. lawyer Lanny Davis, best known for his work for the Clinton White House, is now representing Michael Cohen, President Donald Trump’s longtime personal attorney. Davis confirmed the news, which was first reported on Twitter by New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman, to The Daily Beast.

Cohen has not been charged with any crimes, but his legal problems have escalated dramatically over the past few months. In April, FBI agents raided his home, hotel room, and office in Manhattan. Lengthy court proceedings followed to determine what documents—some of which had been put through a shredder—were subject to attorney-client privilege. A court-appointed special master ultimately assessed that the feds could take a whopping 1.3 million items to potentially use as evidence, as USA Today reported.

ABC News released a lengthy interview with Cohen on the day that news broke. It was his first major public conversation since his legal problems materialized, and in it, he suggested that he would be open to cooperating with investigators.

Say What Now? Former Trump Campaign Manager Tells Black Fox News Panelist He’s Out of His ‘Cotton-Picking Mind’ [Video]

David Bossie, a former deputy campaign manager for Donald Trump, told a Black Fox News guest he was out of his “cotton-picking mind” in the middle of a debate on rhetoric surrounding the Trump administration’s immigration policies.

via NYDN:

Bossie hurled the phrase — bringing to mind the work of slaves in the old South — at Democratic strategist Joel Payne on “Fox & Friends” Sunday morning after the two spoke about former CIA director Michael Hayden sharing a photo of Auschwitz on Twitter.

“Michael Hayden posted a picture of Auschwitz,” Bossie said, to which Payne replied, “Yeah, that liberal Michael Hayden, that screaming liberal Michael Hayden.”

Bossie then responded, “Look, you’re out of your cotton-picking mind.”

Payne was quick to reply: “Cotton-picking mind? Brother, let me tell you something. I got some relatives who picked cotton. And I’m not going to allow you to attack me like that on TV.”

Bossie responded with an incredulous, “Attack you how?” and continued to declare Payne “out of (his) mind.”

Ed Henry, a Fox News host and the discussion’s moderator, issued a statement once the show returned from a commercial break and said that while he wasn’t sure what Bossie meant by the phrase, it “clearly offended” Payne and others.

“I want to make sure that Fox News and this show, myself, we don’t agree with that particular phrase,” he said. “It was obviously offensive and these debates get fiery, that’s unfortunate. We like to have honest and spirited debates, but not phrases like that, obviously. And so I will just leave it at that.”

What is this world coming to?

Former Kanye Collaborator Virgil Abloh Makes History At Louis Vuitton

(AP Photo/Francois Mori)

PARIS (AP) — The debut Louis Vuitton collection by Virgil Abloh, the first African-American to head a major European fashion house, drew stars of all stripes to Paris for his rainbow-themed menswear show.

Kanye West was there with his wife, Kim Kardashian West, who had returned to Paris for the first time since she was tied up and robbed at gunpoint during an October 2016 jewelry heist. Model Bella Hadid weathered a prevailing hot spell behind shades, while Rihanna and Naomi Campbell arrived for the big event of Paris Fashion Week at the last minute.

Instagram Photo
Here are some highlights from Thursday’s spring-summer menswear shows:

LOUIS VUITTON’S INCLUSIVE RAINBOW

“It is a big, big day,” Bella Hadid said as she took her seat in the yellow section of Louis Vuitton’s multicolored set.

“It’s great,” chimed in Rihanna, who rocked a hip, white LV jumpsuit.

Instagram Photo
It was clear by the mood at the show that expectations for artistic director Abloh’s debut were at stratospheric levels.

Instagram Photo
And Abloh did not squander his moment. There was deep and thoughtful symbolism throughout the 56 multicolored looks.

White dominated the first designs. The hue, which signifies purity or new beginnings, also inspired Abloh’s first main fashion venture, the Milan-based house Off-White.

Instagram Photo
On Thursday, it was the base color for sheer T-shirts, LV fitted jackets and loose pleated pants that were accessorized with broken white chains that hung from bags and dragged on the floor. All of the models displaying the garments were black.

Colors then flourished.

A fluorescent yellow breast-plate top began a leitmotif of cage-like garments, such as orange ribbed vests and fluorescent side bibs.

Abloh literally went over the rainbow for the show’s best looks, which channeled “The Wizard of Oz.” A black and white jacquard double-breasted tailored jacket had an image of Judy Garland on the back.

___

VICTOR CRUZ IS PROUD OF HISTORIC MOMENT

Abloh’s Louis Vuitton debut was recognized as a history-making moment for fashion.

American football player Victor Cruz, 31, who has African-American and Puerto Rican roots, told The Associated Press: “I’m happy to be alive and be part of this, because this hasn’t happened before in my generation.”

Cruz, who arrived with Hadid, said having an African-American designer leading a European heritage house for the first time was “opening the door. People now have to pay attention to minorities and the culture that we are shaping for ourselves.”

“This forces them to pay attention to us now,” he continued. “Pay attention in a real way, and not just inviting us to their shows. There are more doors opening to us now.”

Former NFL Player Kellen Winslow Jr. Has Been Arrested on Rape Charges

(ENCINITAS, Calif.) — Former NFL tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. has been arrested on charges of rape and other sex crimes on the day he was to appear in court on an unrelated burglary charge.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports sheriff’s deputies arrested Winslow on Thursday at his home in the San Diego suburb of Encinitas.

The 34-year-old Winslow was charged with two counts of rape, two counts of kidnapping with intent to commit rape and single counts of forcible sodomy, oral copulation and indecent exposure. He’s free after posting $ 50,000 bail.

Defense attorney Brian Watkins declined to comment to the Union-Tribune.

Winslow was due to appear in court Thursday after being charged with burglary following an incident last month at a mobile home park. He now faces arraignment Friday.

The son of Hall of Fame tight end Kellen Winslow, the younger Winslow spent 10 seasons in the NFL from 2004-13 with Cleveland, Tampa Bay, New England and the New York Jets. The former University of Miami star had 469 catches for 5,236 yards and 25 touchdowns in 105 games.

Once NFL’s highest-paid tight end, he was suspended in 2013 with the Jets for violating the league’s performance-enhancing drug policy. In November 2013, he was arrested after a woman told police she saw him masturbating in a parked car outside of a New Jersey department store. Winslow was arrested for possession of synthetic marijuana, and the charge was dropped after he completed court-ordered terms.

Drafted No. 6 overall by Cleveland, he broke his right leg in his rookie season, then sustained a serious right knee injury in a motorcycle accident that offseason.

Former FCC Chairman Claims Ajit Pai Lied About DDoS Attack on Net Neutrality Forum

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai lied when he claimed a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack brought down the agency’s comments system in 2014, his predecessor says.

It’s the latest salvo in the controversy over why the FCC’s public comment forum crashed in the middle of the debate over net neutrality rules last year. Pai claimed it was attacked by hackers who deliberately overloaded the servers (a DDoS attack). He doubled down on his claim by saying that the FCC was the victim of a similar attack the last time net neutrality was considered in 2014. And, Pai claimed, the FCC covered it up.

Supporters of net neutrality rules, which Pai opposes, say the FCC is not coming clean about the real reason behind the crash. They argue it was likely a flood of comments supporting net neutrality, or even a simply technical glitch, that brought down the FCC system.

Earlier this week, former FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler said Pai’s statements about 2014 FCC site outage were false, Ars Technica reported. No attack was officially reported and there’s a good reason for that, according to Wheeler.

“FCC officials who were there at the time said it didn’t happen,” Wheeler said during a taping of the C-SPAN show, The Communicators, according to Axios. He added, “The independent IT contractors that were hired said it didn’t happen. So if it didn’t happen, it’s hard to have a coverup for something that didn’t happen.”

Adding fuel to the fire was a report from Gizmodo on Tuesday that internal emails confirmed that the FCC did not tell the truth about any alleged DDoS attack. The emails show that FCC officials made false claims of an attack to explain the problems with the comment system.

Since Wheeler’s allegation on Wednesday, the FCC has refused to take questions from reporters, and has prevented the release of records related to the issue through FOIA requests, citing the Trade Secrets Act.

5 Former Cheerleaders Are Suing the Houston Texans for Alleged Harassment and Unfair Pay

Five former Houston Texans cheerleaders are suing the team for alleged harassment and unfair compensation, joining a growing cohort of cheerleaders who have spoken out against the NFL.

“We were harassed, we were bullied and we were body-shamed for $ 7.25 an hour,” Ainsley Parish, one of the former cheerleaders who is suing, told CNN Money. “The Houston Texans should not have given us a uniform if they did not want us to become an army.”

Discrimination attorney Gloria Allred is representing Parish and the other cheerleaders who are suing, some of whom were on the squad as recently as last year. She said at a press conference Friday that the women were “harassed, intimidated and forced to live in fear,” CNN reports. The women were allegedly told they would be fired if they spoke out against the team’s practices, directed not to communicate with players and asked to make public appearances without pay, transportation or security, CNN reports.

“We are proud of the cheerleader program and have had hundreds of women participate and enjoy their experience while making a positive impact in the local community. We are constantly evaluating our procedures and will continue to make adjustments as needed to make the program enjoyable for everyone,” the Texans said in a statement.

Three other former Texans cheerleaders are pursuing a class-action lawsuit against the team, citing similar issues. The five who more recently announced legal action are filing individual lawsuits.

Legal action has not been limited to the Texans, however. In 2017, former cheerleaders for the San Francisco 49ers and the Oakland Raiders sued the NFL over low wages. Similar suits have been brought against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Buffalo Bills, New Orleans Saints and Cincinnati Bengals, with many ending in the cheerleaders’ favor. In 2016, for example, the New York Jets had to pay nearly $ 324,000 to cheerleaders who said they were paid less than minimum wage.

Former Playboy Centerfold Apparently Jumps To Death With Son

FILE – In this Sept. 22, 2006, file photo, former Playboy playmate Stephanie Adams speaks at an interview in New York about her lawsuit against the New York City Police Department. (AP Photo/Tina Fineberg, File)

NEW YORK (AP) — A former Playboy centerfold involved in a custody battle apparently jumped with her 7-year-old son to their deaths from the 25th floor of a Manhattan hotel, law enforcement officials said Friday.

Stephanie Adams and her son Vincent fell 23 floors and were found on a second-floor balcony at about 8:15 a.m. Friday in the rear courtyard of the Gotham Hotel.

They had checked into the hotel’s penthouse suite at about 6 p.m. Thursday, officials said, just hours after she told the New York Post that her husband and his lawyer were blocking her from taking her son away on vacation.

“All I want to do is take my son and get away from this nightmare for a few days,” the Post quoted Adams as saying. “But they won’t let me.”

The law enforcement officials said the 46-year-old Adams, who first posed for Playboy in 1992, was involved in a custody dispute over Vincent with her estranged husband, a Manhattan chiropractor named Charles Nicolai. They said police had been called to their home several times in the past few months. The officials were not authorized to speak publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

Nicolai’s lawyer did not immediately respond to an inquiry about the case. A receptionist who answered the phone at Nicolai’s office said he would not comment and was unreachable.

Adams and Nicolai had been in “a very tough custody case,” said Raoul Felder, a divorce lawyer who represented her for a time. The standoff was contentious enough that the former couple handed off their son to each other at a police precinct, an arrangement that’s unusual but not unheard of, Felder said.

Felder said he had been friends with Adams for 20 years but stopped representing her in the divorce case a couple of months ago. Recently, she had been hoping to go to Europe to be with a boyfriend there, and that had become an issue in the case, he said.

Still, “she was never depressed while I knew her. She had certain problems, but depression wasn’t one of them,” Felder said.

Felder recalled her as “sweet and ultra-polite” — she always called him “Mr. Felder” despite their long friendship. She would sometimes stop by his office to say hello, bringing her son, who loved to play with a Superman statue in the office, Felder recalled.

And she routinely sent him birthday cards, until his birthday passed this month without one.

She also stayed in touch with Sanford Rubenstein, an attorney who represented her in a 2006 lawsuit against the police department, a taxi company and a cab driver.

Her suit said that the driver falsely told police she had a gun and that police then assaulted her. Officers forced her to the ground, although they could see she didn’t have a gun in her hand and there was nowhere she could have concealed one in her clothes, according to a judge’s decision. A jury awarded her $ 1.2 million in city money, but the judge later reduced it to $ 373,000.

Rubenstein said he knew she’d been dealing lately with a custody clash but would never have foreseen a suicide.

“She was a vibrant woman, she had strong opinions, and she loved her kid,” he said. “She loved that child. It’s unexplainable.”

Adams was Playboy’s “Miss November” centerfold in 1992. She appeared again in Playboy in 2003, and she had also worked with Elite Model Management. The New York Post profiled Adams in 2013, saying that she had by then written more than 25 self-help books, ran an online beauty products company called Goddessy Organics, and managed the finances in her husband’s office.

“The stereotypes are sexist and unfair,” Adams told the Post in the 2013 profile. “Just because I look a certain way and have expensive tastes, it doesn’t mean I’m shallow. Style and looks don’t mean lack of brains, sweetheart!”

Adams was also facing a lawsuit brought by a massage therapist who said she’d been fired from Nicolai’s chiropractic office because Adams was jealous. Adams denied the claims. Court papers filed Friday show the massage therapist agreed this week to end the claims against Nicolai. Lawyers for Adams and Nicolai in that case declined to comment. The massage therapist’s lawyer didn’t immediately return a call.

The Gotham Hotel is on 46th street, about four blocks from Grand Central Terminal.

10 Things To Know About Former McDonald’s President and CEO Don Thompson

There’s a lot more to C-suite executive Don Thompson—the 2007 Black Enterprise Executive of the Year who gave B.E. an exclusive in-person interview after retiring from McDonald’s in 2015—than you might think.

10 Things You Need to Know About Former McDonald’s President and CEO Don Thompson

  1. He and his wife, Liz Thompson, recently created a $ 1 million endowment for Purdue University’s College of Engineering, according to a statement released by the college; $ 900,000 will go toward scholarships for underrepresented engineering students, and the rest will go to the Minority Engineering Program, or MEP.
  2. Thompson and his wife graduated from Purdue and both majored in electrical engineering.
  3. Thompson has been a Purdue trustee since 2009.
  4. Don and Liz met through MEP.
  5. Their gift to the college will help to ensure that MEP can continue to support students of color pursuing engineering at Purdue. Other colleges have adopted the MEP model, according to the statement.
  6. The Thompsons’ gift will support MEP programs like its Engineering Academic Boot Camp, designed to support the transition of underrepresented students to Purdue campus life.
  7. The Thompsons lead Cleveland Avenue, a privately held venture capital firm that invests in “innovative food, beverage, and restaurant concepts and emerging brands.”
  8. The Thompsons also head their own foundation, the Cleveland Avenue Foundation for Education. Don is CEO and Liz is president.
  9. Don worked for Northrop Grumman Corp. before going to McDonald’s, where he worked for 25 years, the last three as president and CEO.
  10. He has received a number of honors, including a Humanitarian Award from the Illinois Holocaust Museum in 2012.

“Purdue University, and specifically the Minority Engineering Program, opened doors of opportunity for Liz and me,” Don Thompson is quoted as saying in the statement. “Those doors, and God’s grace, ultimately led to successful careers that yielded economic opportunities to enable us to do what we’re doing today. Not only did we meet at Purdue through the program, but MEP helped shape our grit and perseverance—first through the summer engineering camps and then through the support it offered in response to academically challenging courses. At every step, they were there for us and now we want to pay it forward.”

Former MasterChef Contestant, 29, Dies After Collapsing During Hottest-Ever London Marathon

(LONDON) — London Marathon organizers say a 29-year-old man died after collapsing near the end of Sunday’s race in the hottest conditions ever seen for the event.

Matt Campbell, a chef from northwest England who was a contestant on a reality TV cooking show last year, collapsed after 22.5 miles (36.2 kilometers).

Organizers say “although he received immediate medical treatment on the scene from race doctors, he died later in hospital.”

Campbell last year appeared on the BBC’s “Masterchef: The Professionals.”

Organizers say a medical examination is still required to discover the cause of death.

The Met Office said temperatures reached 73.8 degrees (23.2 Celsius) near the end of the 26.2-mile (42.2-kilometer) course.

Who is Shelby Tribble? New Towie 2018 girl, Pete Wicks’ current girlfriend and former Miss Great Britain

SHELBY Tribble is set to join the cast of Towie – and she’s also rumoured to be dating Pete Wicks.

But, what else do we know about her? And when did she win Miss Great Britain? Let’s get the lowdown…

Shelby Tribble is set to join Towie
Instagram

Who is Shelby Tribble?

Shelby Tribble is the girlfriend of Towie star Pete Wicks.

She won Miss Great Britain – the oldest female pageant in the UK – back in 2014.

Shelby used to date Premier League footballer Danny Simpson.

She will join the cast of Towie for the 22nd series.

Instagram

When will Shelby Tribble appear on Towie?

Shelby is expected to film her first Towie scenes next week as part of the first episode of the new series.

She was seen at the series launch party, cosying up to boyfriend Pete Wicks.

Shelby may make an enemy of Megan McKenna after sources close to the model reveal she has already been on dates with Pete.

A TV insider told The Sun’s Bizarre column: “Shelby is absolutely gorgeous and fits in perfectly with the cast.

“She’s already very well-known on the Essex scene after living there for years – but is originally from Plymouth.

“Shelby made a name for herself after winning Miss Great Britain in 2014 before she briefly dated footballer Danny last year.

“But in recent weeks she’s been getting close to Pete and mutual pals of the pair predict their romance will be filmed for the new series.”

Shelby’s signing on the show comes after seven members of the cast were axed in a dramatic New Year’s shake-up.

Chris Clark, Amber Dowding and Mike Hassini were three of the names to be given the boot as part of a move from producers to revamp the series.

Jack Rigden, Jordan Brook, Maddie Hooper and Ruby Lacey were also cut – leaving plenty of room for new additions.

Towie bosses have also signed Vicky Pattison’s ex-boyfriend Jordan Wright and Dean Ralph, who used to date Love Island’s Chloe Crowhurst.

Who is Shelby Tribble’s boyfriend Pete Wicks?

Pete Wicks, 28, is from Harlow Essex.

He joined the cast of Towie in 2015.

In March 2017 he had a high profile split from Megan McKenna.

He said that in a game of snog, marry, avoid he’d kiss co-star Gemma Collins because she’d be a “demon” in bed.

Things must be serious with Shelby though since he’s introduced her to his dog.

However things have been a bit tense between them lately after Shelby was seen grinding up against Liam Gatsby.

Is Shelby Tribble on social media?

Of course she is! She’s on Twitter and Instagram.

Former Diplomat Susan Rice Gets A Seat on Netflix’s Board

Woman of Power and former ambassador to the United Nations, Susan Rice will join the board of Netflix, the company announced.

“I am thrilled to be joining the board of directors of Netflix, a cutting-edge company whose leadership, high-quality productions, and unique culture I deeply admire,” said Rice.

Rice, 53, served under two presidents—first with the Bill Clinton administration from 1993 to 2007 and under President Barack Obama who appointed her as the U.S. Ambassador to the U.N., making her the second youngest person and first African American woman to represent America at the U.N.

Rice began her career at Intellibridge as managing director before joining the Brookings Institute as a management consultant focused on U.S. foreign policy, national security issues, and global poverty. Rice left the Brookings Institute in 2008 to serve as then-candidate Barack Obama’s foreign policy advisor.

A contributing editor at The New York Times, Rice currently serves as Distinguished Visiting Research Fellow at American University’s School of International Service and as a non-resident senior fellow at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government.

“We are delighted to welcome Ambassador Rice to the Netflix board,” said Netflix co-founder and CEO Reed Hastings. “For decades, she has tackled difficult, complex global issues with intelligence, integrity and insight and we look forward to benefiting from her experience and wisdom.”

While Michael B. Jordan announced just a week after the Oscars that he would be adopting the “inclusion rider,” Hastings, whose company is heralded as a prime example of diversity in broadcast programming said his company has no interest in doing such a thing.

Rice’s appointment comes in a month that has seen a number black women take board level roles in some of the world’s largest organizations. Etsy added Edith W. Cooper to its board. Richelle Parham also joined Best Buy’s board of directors and Intel added medical doctor Risa Lavizzo-Mourey to its board.

Rice previously held positions as U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs and as a Special Assistant to President Bill Clinton, as Senior Director, and Director of the National Security Council staff.

From 2009 to 2013, Rice served as U.S. Permanent Representative to the UN and as a cabinet member. In 2013, Rice directed the National Security Council staff, where she chaired the Cabinet-level National Security Principals committee providing daily national security briefings to President Obama. She was responsible for the formulation, coordination, and implementation of all aspects of the administration’s foreign and national security policy, intelligence and military efforts.

A Washington native, Rice is married to Ian Cameron, and they have two children.

Best Buy Co. Inc. announced that it had appointed Richelle Parham to its board of directors, effective immediately.

Parham, named to BE’s 2015 Most Powerful Women in Corporate America, is a partner at Baltimore-based Camden Partners Holdings, a private equity firm that provides growth and seed capital to lower-middle-market companies in technology, business services, education, and healthcare.

“Richelle has a proven track record in global strategy and marketing—especially personalized digital marketing—and a deep understanding of e-commerce and the fundamental needs of consumers,” said Best Buy Chairman and CEO Hubert Joly. “Her expertise and insights will have great value as we move forward with our Best Buy 2020: Building the New Blue growth strategy.”

A seasoned executive with more than 25 years’ experience in global strategy and marketing, Parham served as vice president and chief marketing officer for eBay prior to joining Camden Partners Holdings in 2016. She was responsible, globally, for eBay’s brand strategy and brand marketing, reaching 108-plus million active eBay users. She served as head of Global Marketing Innovation and Initiatives and head of Global Marketing Services of Visa, Inc. from 2008 to 2010. She spent 13 years at Digitas Inc., where she held a variety of senior leadership roles, including general manager of the agency’s Chicago office. She has been a director of Ranir L.L.C. since September 2017 and has been an independent director at Laboratory Corporation of America Holdings since 2016. She has also held senior leadership roles at Rapp Worldwide and Citibank.

“I am delighted to join the Board and look forward to working with Hubert and the other directors as Best Buy continues to execute on its vision to enrich people’s lives through technology,” Parham said.

An advocate for empowering female leaders through STEM programs, Parham sits on the advisory boards of Girls Who Code and has also been the director of Scripps Networks Interactive Inc. since 2012. Parham, 50, earned a double degree in Business Administration and Design Arts from Drexel University, where she has served as a member of the board of trustees since 2014.

Parham was named to Savoy’s 2016 “Power 300, Most Influential Black Corporate Directors,” Forbes’ 2014 “50 Most Influential CMOs in the World,” and Fast Company’s “Most Creative People in Business 1000.” She has received the Women of Influence award by the Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal and has been inducted into the World Association for Cooperative Education Co-op Hall of Fame.

In the Midst of #MeToo, Alice Glass Scored a Legal Victory Against Her Alleged Abuser and Former Bandmate

Ethan Kath of the band Crystal Castles sued former bandmate Alice Glass for defamation in October after she released a disturbing account alleging he had physically and emotionally abused her. Late last month, the defamation lawsuit was dismissed in court.

“This is a victory for survivors of abuse and sexual misconduct in countries where abusers use the court system to further victimize and keep people silent,” Glass wrote on Twitter after the ruling. In all caps, the Canadian singer added: “WE WILL NOT BE SILENCED.”

Mark Runyon / Creative Commons

Glass had charged Kath with “almost a decade of abuse, manipulation and psychological control,” starting from when she was just 15 years-old. “Claudio was very manipulative towards me,” she wrote. “Over a period of many months, he gave me drugs and alcohol and had sex with me in an abandoned room at an apartment he managed. It wasn’t always consensual.” At least one other woman has also accused Kath of sexual assault.

After Glass wrote about the alleged abuse, Kath responded by dismissing her claims as the words of a mentally unstable drug addict, labeling them “extortion, false claims and accusations” and insinuating that Glass accused him of abuse because she was upset that the band had achieved success since her departure. He went on to sue Glass for defamation—but on Feb. 23, the Los Angeles Superior Court held that her “motion to strike” was granted, effectively dismissing Kath’s complaint in its entirety.

Glass’ victory in court is particularly important because of how often women and survivors are disenfranchised within the legal system. Women and survivors have nothing to gain—and often everything to lose—from speaking up about harassment, abuse and assault. They can lose jobs and important relationships in their industries, as well as ridicule, slut-shaming and victim-blaming. Even worse, they can face retaliation, threats and violence for coming forward.

Glass first accused Kath of misconduct around the onset of the #MeToo movement, as women and survivors of sexual abuse across the country—and the world—began speaking out about their experiences with sexual abuse and harassment. #MeToo and the use of social media to raise awareness about abuse, hold powerful men accountable and demand justice began largely because of the limited options women have in workplaces and the legal system to defend themselves.

While those who defend men accused of abuse frequently argue that #MeToo and believing women undermine due process, what’s rarely considered is that due to a wide range of circumstances, survivors’ testimonies are often the only evidence they are able to provide. The insistence within institutional and cultural power structures that those testimonies alone aren’t enough to justify consequences for alleged perpetrators denies survivors credibility—and has also denied many victims justice for generations.

Ryan Seacrest Denies Sexual Abuse Claims From Former Stylist

Ryan Seacrest has denied his former personal stylist’s new claims of sexual abuse, after she came forward publicly to detail his alleged misconduct, following an internal investigation by E! in which her complaint was dismissed.

“I don’t want to accuse anyone of not telling the truth but in this case, I have no choice but to again deny the claims against me, remind people that I was recused of any wrongdoing, and put the matter to rest,” Seacrest said in a statement to TheWrap on Tuesday.

The denial comes after Suzie Hardy, who started working as Seacrest’s personal stylist at E! News in 2006, told Variety on Monday that the TV host had sexually harassed her for years. Hardy’s claims include unwanted, sexually aggressive touching and groping by Seacrest. Hardy claimed she was fired after reporting the alleged sexual abuse to the company’s human resources department in 2013.

The sexual misconduct allegations were originally made public in November by Seacrest, who issued a statement denying the accusations.

“Recently, someone that worked as a wardrobe stylist for me nearly a decade ago at E! News, came forward with a complaint suggesting I behaved inappropriately toward her,” he said at the time. “If I made her feel anything but respected, I am truly sorry. I dispute these reckless allegations and I plan to cooperate with any corporate inquiries that may result.”

Seacrest, who hosts ABC’s Live With Kelly & Ryan, appeared on the show Tuesday but did not mention the new allegations.

E! issued a statement in January saying there was insufficient evidence to support the accusations against Seacrest. The network said Seacrest will continue to host the Oscars’ red carpet pre-show event at the 2018 Academy Awards, and a spokesperson for ABC said the network will still stand by the host.

In a statement released Tuesday, AppNexus announced the appointment of Hamilton as its new vice president for Diversity, Inclusion and Community Experience. Under the new role, Hamilton will spearhead initiatives “to promote a diverse and inclusive global culture within AppNexus,” reads a press release. This includes leading talent recruitment, driving thought leadership, training employees, and strategizing best corporate practices. This commitment requires a proactive effort and a holistic view that accords respect to people of different backgrounds and perspectives.”

Hamilton joined L’Oréal USA in 2004 and was named director of Diversity and Inclusion in 2009. Former Planet Blue CEO Launches Advisory

Former Planet Blue chief executive James Williams has launched an advisory firm geared toward the retail and fashion industry after stepping down from Planet Blue earlier this year.
Williams steered the Santa Monica-based retailer, rooted in the Malibu lifestyle and beach-inspired aesthetic, for a decade as it saw the launch of its own lines, growth of the wholesale business, capital infusion from investment firm Breakwater Management LLC and expansion of Planet Blue stores beyond the core Southern California market.
Williams’ firm, JSW/Strategic, is focused on the fashion, retail, luxury and digital spaces.
“After 10 years at [Planet Blue], it was time for a change, personally and professionally,” Williams said. “It is something I had been contemplating and preparing the business for for a couple of years. The company is well-positioned with a strong leadership team and backed by a committed PE firm in Breakwater, so the time just felt right. A Former USA Gymnastics Coach Is Now Under Investigation

(LANSING, Mich.) — Former U.S. Olympic women’s gymnastics team coach John Geddert is facing a criminal investigation after complaints were filed following the sentencing of disgraced ex-sports doctor Larry Nassar, who molested girls at Geddert’s elite gymnastics club in Michigan.

The Eaton County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday that people recently come forward with complaints against Geddert. The office declined to elaborate on the number of complaints or their nature, citing the ongoing investigation.

Geddert until recently owned and operated Twistars, a gym in Dimondale where Nassar offered treatments on Monday nights. During Nassar’s sentencing hearing, some victims complained that Geddert was physically abusive, created an ultra-competitive atmosphere, was indifferent to injuries and rarely offered gymnasts any choice to see a different doctor.

One also alleged that Geddert was aware in the late 1990s that Nassar had performed an “inappropriate procedure” on her when she was 16.

Geddert’s lawyer could not immediately be reached for comment Tuesday by The Associated Press.

Geddert has insisted he had “zero knowledge” of Nassar’s crimes. In response to lawsuits, his lawyer filed court papers saying Geddert was “just one person in an extremely long line of people who were fooled by Nassar.”

Geddert previously was accused of physically assaulting a parent who also was a coach at Twistars. He also was accused of assaulting a gymnast. He did not face charges in either case.

On Monday, the worst sex-abuse case in sports history ended with a third long prison sentence for Nassar. The latest sentence of 40 to 125 years was for molesting young gymnasts at Twistars.

Geddert was suspended last month by USA Gymnastics until it completes its own investigation. Geddert, who coached the “Fierce Five” that won a team gold in 2012 in London, announced his retirement.

An astonishing 250-plus women and girls gave statements in two Michigan courtrooms over 10 days of proceedings. The focus will shift to lawsuits and multiple probes of Nassar’s actions and those of people around him when he worked for Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics, the sport’s governing body.

Former Championship Tour Competitor Matt Banting Set To Comeback From Injury at Vissla Sydney Surf Pro

Press Release

Coolangatta, QLD/AUS  (Wednesday,January 31, 2018) – With less than a month until the Vissla Sydney Surf Pro World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series (QS) 6000 event lands on Manly Beach, many of the world’s best surfers are gearing up to make a splash in Sydney’s biggest surf event.

With 6,000 QS points up for grabs, an estimated 220 surfers from over 20 different countries are expected to kick off their 2018 campaign in style when the event gets underway from 24 February – 4 March.

Someone who is accustomed to taking victories in Manly is 23-year-old Matt Banting – who at just 17 – made worldwide news back in 2012 when he not only claimed victory in the QS 6,000, but also the Pro Junior division at the Australian Open of Surfing.

After spending the last 12-months recovering from a pelvic injury, Banting is eager to get back to the location that cemented him as one of the world’s best and put him on the pathway to qualifying for the WSL Championship Tour in 2015.

“I think I’ve been pain-free since October 2017 and since then I’ve been focused on getting back to the level I was surfing at previously,” said Banting. “I think I was beginning to get a bit flustered by a lot of the pressure of being on tour back in 2016 and I probably took on too much. Now, I’m more focused on improving my own surfing and hopefully getting a few good results in 2018.”

“Winning in Manly back in 2012 is still one of the fondest memories I’ve ever had from professional surfing. I’ve actually started watching a lot of clips from events in Manly over the last few years and the waves have been really similar to home in previous years, so hopefully, it’s similar in 2018 and I’m prepared when the event kicks off.”

Banting will make his complete competitive return in the upcoming Vissla Great Lakes Pro pres. by D’Blanc before going into the Burton Automotive Pro and finally the Vissla Sydney Surf Pro at Manly.

In addition to the QS components of the Vissla Sydney Surf Pro, a WSL sanctioned Pro Junior event will also take place on the opening weekend of the 24 – 25 February.

All the NSW professional surfing action gets underway from early January with the World Junior Championships, followed by the Vissla NSW Pro Surf Series, The nudie Australian Boardriders Battle National Final, Surfest and the Vissla Sydney Pro.

The Vissla Sydney Surf Pro will be proudly supported by the NSW Government through its tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW. The event will also be proudly supported by Vissla, Northern Beaches Council, WSL and Surfing NSW.

The 2018 Vissla Sydney Surf Pro will be held from February 26th  – March 4th. For more information, highlights and images, head to www.worldsurfleague.com and on the WSL App.

EMPLOYMENT SEARCH UPDATE:

Former NBA Star Lorenzen Wright’s Ex-Wife Arrested In Connection With His Murder

There’s been an arrest in the murder case of NBA player Lorenzen Wright.

Seven years after Wright’s bullet-riddled body was found decomposing in a Tennessee suburb, Sherra Wright Robinson, his ex-wife, was arrested Friday night in Riverside, Calif., reports Fox13.

“Thank you Jesus! Thank you Jesus! They got her! They got her!’’ Lorenzen Wright’s mother, Deborah Marion, told a reporter. She added: “They need to bury her.’’

Marion said police confirmed the arrest to her. She said got a call from Memphis police and went with her family to police headquarters. Marion says a police official told her Sherra will be charged with first-degree murder.

As we reported earlier, Billy Turner — a deacon at the church Lorenzen and Sherra Wright attended — was arrested and charged with first-degree murder on Tuesday. He pleaded not guilty.

“It’s just those two right now,’’ Marion said. “But they’re still working on it.’’

Wright, who was 34 when he died, played for the Cleveland Cavaliers and LA Clippers among other teams, was last seen alive on July 18, 2010, as he left his ex-wife’s home.

Here’s what we reported about the case in 2010:

A law enforcement source confirmed to the Memphis Commercial Appeal newspaper the body was that of Wright, who has been missing since July 19, though the Memphis Police Department won’t officially comment. Police are referring to their investigation as a “death investigation.”

Wright recently flew from Atlanta to Memphis to visit friends and his six children, friends said.

According to sources, a 9-1-1 call was made from Wright’s cell phone on July 19. A fire dispatcher could hear the loud blasts of several gunshots. The cellphone call ended at that point.
Later it was learned that dispatchers didn’t alert patrol officers or commanders because they couldn’t confirm it came from their jurisdiction. They didn’t send a patrol officer or relay the information to Memphis police until days later.

Wright’s mother filed a missing-person report with Collierville police on July 22, 2010. Authorities in Collierville were accused of dragging their feet in the days after the report was filed, and an apparent lack of communication kept authorities from linking the 911 call to the missing-person report.

Wright’s body was found in a field near some woods, complicating the investigation because evidence had likely deteriorated in the heat of Summer. An autopsy report showed bullet fragments were lodged in Wright’s skull, chest and right forearm.

Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan: Where Are the Former Skaters Now?

More than two decades ago, former American figure skater Nancy Kerrigan was clubbed in the knee while training to compete in the 1994 Winter Olympics in a scandal that captivated the nation and ensnared her biggest rival, Tonya Harding.

An assailant, hired by Harding’s ex-husband Jeff Gillooly, struck Kerrigan on the right knee with a baton after practice at a Detroit ice rink on Jan. 6, 1994. The attack left the gold medal favorite wailing and repeatedly howling “Why?” on the floor as doctors tended to her injuries, according to footage of the immediate aftermath.

Kerrigan went on to become a two-time Olympic medalist and recently competed on ABC’s Dancing With the Stars, while Harding — whose troubled past is the subject of the upcoming biopic I, Tonya that stars Margot Robbie — has mostly stayed out of the spotlight.

Ahead of the big screen debut of I, Tonya on Friday, here’s a look at where Harding, now 47, and Kerrigan, 48, are today:

Tonya Harding in 2017

After she was permanently banned from competing in amateur skating competitions following Kerrigan’s attack, Harding briefly dabbled in boxing around 2004 and released The Tonya Tapes, a book about her tumultuous life and upbringing, in 2008. “Being afraid to open up and talk to someone is really difficult,” she told the Associated Press when the book was published. “That was another reason I wanted to finish the book, to get rid of my past, dealing with everything, the ups and downs, for a fresh start in the future.”

In 1994, Harding pleaded guilty to conspiring to hinder the prosecution of the attack on Kerrigan, although she has denied any role in the attack itself. She was sentenced to three years’ probation and had to pay a $ 100,000 fine as well as resign from the U.S. Figure Skating Association.

While she has largely maintained her privacy in recent years, Harding spoke about the notorious attack on Kerrigan during a 2009 interview on The Oprah Winfrey Show. Harding told the TV host she has “moved on” and extended warm regards to Kerrigan.

“If she’d let me, I’d love to give her a hug and just tell her how proud I am of her being able to go forward with her life,” Harding said of Kerrigan. “She’s moved on. I’ve moved on. It’s part of history that will always be with us. But I’m also noted as the one and only American woman that did the first triple Axel and those are the things that no one can take away from me.”

The former skater also said her biggest regret was “being married for the first time to an idiot” and said she wished she could have had a “more stable life” growing up. She has said her mother was abusive.

Harding, who now lives in Washington State with her new husband and young son, cooperated with the creation of I, Tonya. She even appeared to be grateful for the movie, which brought her to tears, screenwriter Steven Rogers told Deadline. “She said she laughed and she cried, and there were things she didn’t like, but she’s emailed me twice just to thank me, so I think she’s happy,” Rogers said.

Robbie, the Hollywood star who portrays Harding in the film, told People last week that Harding was “incredibly lovely” during the process. “She was very sweet and very understanding,” Robbie said. The two even walked the red carpet for the Los Angeles premiere of the film on Dec. 6.

Harding’s representatives said the former skater was not immediately available for comment.

Nancy Kerrigan in 2017

Kerrigan, who won bronze at the 1992 Olympic Winter Games, recovered from the attack and took home a silver medal at the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Olympics, where Harding placed eighth. She stopped skating competitively, but she helps choreograph seasonal ice skating shows like Halloween on Ice and has performed in dozens of live and made-for-TV shows, including Disney’s Dreams on Ice. Kerrigan also got married in 1995, had three children, wrote two books on skating and became an advocate for the vision impaired and for athletes suffering from eating disorders.

“One thing is for sure,” her husband and manager Jerry Solomon told TIME on Tuesday. “She has been a role model and inspiration for many people.”

This spring, Kerrigan ditched her skates for dancing shoes as one of the celebrity contenders on Dancing with the Stars. She and her professional dancer partner, Artem Chigvintsev, were eliminated in May. “I am going to miss all this, for sure, as it was a great experience,” Kerrigan wrote in a blog post at the time.

The Massachusetts mother also appeared in a recent episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians. In the reality TV show’s holiday special, which aired Nov. 26, Kerrigan surprises the Kardashian clan at a holiday party at one of their homes in Calabasas and skates with the youngest members of the family in a skating rink set up in the yard.

As for her more long-term projects, Kerrigan is working on an upcoming documentary that explores eating disorders in the sports world. The film is called Why Don’t You Lose 5 Pounds? and Kerrigan is the executive producer. In an interview with ABC’s Nightline this April, Kerrigan said she developed an eating disorder after the attack and had to force herself to eat. She also revealed that she has suffered at least six miscarriages over eight years after her first child was born in 1996. Kerrigan also told ABC she never got a direct apology from Harding, but that it didn’t “matter at this point.”

Former USA Gymnastics Doctor Larry Nassar Pleads Guilty to Sexual Assault Charges

(CHARLOTTE, Mich.) — A disgraced Michigan sports doctor who admits he sexually assaulted female gymnasts and possessed child pornography pleaded guilty Wednesday in a third criminal case, acknowledging that he molested girls who sought treatment for injuries.

Larry Nassar, who worked at Michigan State University and at USA Gymnastics, said he molested girls with his hands at Twistars gymnastics club in Eaton County, near Lansing. A week ago, he made a separate but similar guilty plea nearby in Ingham County, the home of his campus clinic.

“Guilty, your honor,” Nassar told a judge in response to charges involving a girl under 13 and two teenagers at Twistars, where gymnasts with hip and back injuries would line up to seek his help.

Nassar, 54, has dropped his claim that he was performing legitimate treatment with his ungloved hands.

In a third case, Nassar will be sentenced in federal court on Dec. 7 for possessing child pornography. He faces decades in prison. Meanwhile, more than 100 women and girls are suing him.

“I’m so horribly sorry that this was like a match that turned into a forest fire out of control,” Nassar told a judge last week.

The criminal cases followed reports last year in The Indianapolis Star about how USA Gymnastics mishandled complaints about sexual misconduct involving the doctor and coaches. Women and girls said the stories inspired them to step forward with detailed allegations of abuse.

Former Accountant Turned Self Taught Chef Talks Tips For Creating Your Own Lane

When Angela Davis unexpectedly lost her job as a senior project accountant she turned to cooking as a side hustle. But life had its way and her passion for cooking turned into The Kitchenista Diaries, a mini-empire featuring cookbooks, recipe development services, and cooking classes. Her Twitter hashtag #KitchenistaSundays became so popular with followers that she turned it into a family-style dinner event series which attracts 75- 100 people in Washington, D.C.

Looking back at your journey from employee to business owner, what were the moments when you said to yourself, ‘Oh, maybe I can make a living from doing this full time?”

The first was when I booked my first major catering gig for The Roots’ concert. The second was self-publishing my first digital cookbook. They were both a direct result of building a following from my food blog and social media. The light bulbs came on and I realized that the income didn’t necessarily have to come from my blog itself.

Considering you’re a self-taught chef, tell us some things you did to hone your skills in culinary arts and grow your business as a private chef?

  • Cooked every day and tried dishes that I had never made myself. This pushed me out of my comfort zone.
  • Pored through food magazines, cookbooks, and blogs to learn how to write a recipe and to figure out what my voice would be.
  • Contacted other private chefs to learn about the business, especially about pricing catering engagements.

Also, the vast majority of my work comes from fans of my blog or Instagram feeds. I’ve done very little advertising. Learning how to take professional photos of my food is the best investment I made because that’s what makes people want to know more about what I can do.

Recently you turned your #KitchenistaSundays hashtag into an in-person event. Tell us about that.

#KitchenistaSundays was intended to highlight what everyday people are cooking at home for Sunday dinner. It doesn’t have to be fancy, but it’s about taking extra time out of the week to create a meal you’re proud to share with loved ones. My dinner series is a continuation of that, amplified of course because now we’re feeding 75-100 people in one sitting! Sunday Dinner with The Kitchenista (presented by Events DC) definitely highlights home cooking, and the dishes are mostly served family style.

I’m all about the stick-to-your-ribs kind of comfort food that brings people to the table. My favorite meals on Sunday are often slow cooked, especially through the fall and winter, so you’ll see a lot of braised and roasted meats, which we get from local butchers, vibrant farm-fresh salads, homemade baked goods, and fun appetizers.

My events are also a social gathering, so there’s curated music and vendors selling crafts, we bring in bartenders to do seasonal cocktails, and we hire professional wait-staff so the guests can be comfortable.

Former Kapor Capital Director Launches Founder Gym

Gabriela Zamudio and Mandela SH Dixon (Image: Founder Gym)

The membership model is growing increasingly popular for businesses. You can get a membership for just about anything these days, and now there is one specifically for underrepresented startup founders looking to take their ventures to the next level.

Black Enterprise caught up with Mandela SH Dixon, founder and CEO of Founder Gym, who told us about her previous startup, how being at Kapor Capital helped with her current venture, and what she aims to do with Founder Gym.

Mandela SH Dixon (Image: Founder Gym) Mandela SH Dixon (Image: Founder Gym)

What is your background?

I am one of the only black women who has navigated the tech space as a VC-backed tech startup founder, global startup ecosystem builder, and VC portfolio services director. I have seen both sides of the table and all aspects of the ecosystem, and I am now leveraging my background in entrepreneurship, education (I started my career as a 6th grade teacher in South Central), and sports (I was a Division I collegiate soccer player) to train underrepresented founders on how to build successful tech startups.

Tell us about your previous venture before heading to Kapor Capital.

In 2011, I co-founded DemoLesson, the first teacher-hiring platform that replaced resumes with video, offering a new way to showcase teachers’ talents. It was backed by Kapor Capital, 500 Startups, and Imagine K12 (later acquired by Y Combinator), and we were utilized in over 28 countries. A few years later, I led a global entrepreneurial program called Startup Weekend Education (later acquired by Techstars) that spanned six continents and empowered thousands of entrepreneurs to launch edtech startups.

How did your role at Kapor help with your current venture?

Prior to Kapor Capital, I was an edtech founder and I helped other founders around the world launch edtech startups. Once I got to Kapor Capital, I was able to see how the other side—venture capital—worked. I learned about who investors were, how they operated, what they cared about, and how they made decisions, and I’ve been able to leverage these insights to better train founders who are seeking capital. Also, as my relationships with founders in the ecosystem grew over the years, I learned more about the realities of entrepreneurship post-funding. I realized that you can’t always believe what you read on the front page of the news and that many first-time founders, even those who are funded, struggle with finding their way. Also, via my own coaching programs, I realized that there is a particular need for underrepresented founders who don’t have the same safety nets—psychological, financial, or social—as their peers. All of these experiences, coupled with my time as a founder, educator, and athlete, influenced my decision to build a solution with my co-founder, Gabriela Zamudio, that we are confident can help underrepresented tech startup founders.

What is your aim for the online training center?

Founder Gym is the first online training center by underrepresented tech startup founders for underrepresented tech startup founders. Utilizing Silicon Valley investors and venture-backed founders as personal trainers, Founder Gym offers underrepresented founders a unique opportunity to learn the secrets of startup success in an environment that is specifically designed for them. We aim to level up underrepresented founders quickly so that they can grow their tech startups, get admitted into accelerator programs, and/or secure funding.

Can you tell us about some of the content/courses on the platform?

Our training programs are topic-based. Four weeks are spent going deep on a core tenet of startup success versus spending four weeks giving a surface level overview of various startup topics. The first cohort covers “Fundraising Basics,” and seasoned investors and founders train cohort members on the history of venture capital, what’s on the investor scorecard, and the unwritten rules of fundraising. The cohort wraps up with our version of a demo day where the cohort showcases what they’ve learned. Future Founder Gym cohorts will cover topics like hiring and managing technical talent, user growth, problem validation, and revenue. The program is highly selective and you must apply to be admitted. In the future, we will be offering free content for the public to access.

If people are interested in joining, how do they sign up?

Nov. 30 is the application deadline for our first cohort on Fundraising Basics, which launches on Jan. 8, 2018. You can learn more and apply at FounderGym.com.

Former USA Gymnastics Doctor Larry Nassar Pleads Guilty to Molesting Girls

(LANSING, Mich.) — A sports doctor accused of molesting girls while working for USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University pleaded guilty Wednesday to multiple charges of sexual assault and will face at least 25 years in prison.

Dr. Larry Nassar, 54, was charged with molesting seven girls, mostly under the guise of treatment at his Lansing-area home and a campus clinic. All but one of his accusers was a gymnast. He faces similar charges in a neighboring county and lawsuits filed by more than 125 women and girls.

Olympic gymnasts Aly Raisman, McKayla Maroney and Gabby Douglas are among the women who have publicly said they were among Nassar’s victims.

Some of his accusers attended the hearing Wednesday in a packed Ingham County courtroom.

The plea deal in Ingham County calls for a minimum prison sentence of 25 years, but a judge could set the minimum sentence as high as 40 years. In Michigan, inmates are eligible for parole after serving a minimum sentence.

The girls have testified that Nassar molested them with his hands, sometimes when a parent was present in the room, while they sought help for gymnastics injuries.

“He convinced these girls that this was some type of legitimate treatment,” Assistant Attorney General Angela Poviliatis told a judge last summer. “Why would they question him? Why would they question this gymnastics god?”

Separately, Nassar is charged with similar crimes in Eaton County, the location of an elite gymnastics club. He also is awaiting sentencing in federal court on child pornography charges.

The Michigan criminal cases against Nassar followed reports last year in the Indianapolis Star about how USA Gymnastics, which trains Olympians, mishandled complaints about sexual misconduct involving the doctor and coaches. Women and girls said the stories inspired them to step forward with detailed allegations of abuse, sometimes when their parents were in the exam room at Michigan State.

Hope Solo Accuses Former FIFA President Sepp Blatter of Sexual Assault

Hope Solo, the U.S. women’s national soccer team goalkeeper, has accused former FIFA president Sepp Blatter of sexual assault.

Solo said in an interview with the Portuguese newspaper Expresso that Blatter grabbed her butt during FIFA’s Ballon d’Or awards ceremony in January 2013.

“I had Sepp Blatter grab my ass,” Solo said.”It was at the Ballon D’or one year, right before I went on stage.”

That year, Solo was onstage to present FIFA’s women’s world player of the year to her teammate, the striker Abby Wambach. Blatter joined Solo on stage.

“I was in shock and completely thrown off,” Solo told the Guardian of the alleged assault. “I had to quickly pull myself together to present my teammate with the biggest award of her career and celebrate in that moment, so I completely shifted my focus to Abby.”

A spokesperson for Blatter told the Guardian the “allegation is ridiculous.” Blatter’s attorney and his personal foundation did not immediately respond to TIME’s request for comment. The ex-FIFA president, who resigned from his post in 2015 following a corruption scandal, has publicly made numerous sexist comments, including his 2004 suggestion that women soccer players wear “tighter shorts.”

Last month, Solo joined the #MeToo social media campaign which raised awareness of the prevalence of sexual harassment and assault with an Instagram post commending the women who came forward to accuse Harvey Weinstein of misconduct and detailing similar incidents in the sports world.

“From inappropriate comments, unwanted advances and grabs of the ass to coaches and GMs and even press officers speaking about players’ “tits” and physical appearance, sexual harassment is rampant in the sports world,” Solo wrote. “I always felt I’d “handled it” and stood up for myself in those situations, but there were never any consequences for the perpetrators. That needs to change.”

Solo’s accusation against Blatter comes as several women are speaking up about sexual misconduct. In the wake of the Weinstein scandal, dozens of prominent men have been accused of sexual misconduct, ranging from groping to rape, including former President George H.W. Bush, Louis C.K. and Kevin Spacey.

Former Guatemalan Judge Becomes First Person in U.S. Jailed Over FIFA Corruption Scandal

(NEW YORK) — A former judge who led Guatemala’s soccer federation became the first person sentenced in the U.S. in the FIFA world soccer corruption scandal when a judge ordered him to serve eight months in prison, saying his bribe money could have been used to build soccer fields for poor children.

Hector Trujillo, 63, was sentenced in Brooklyn federal court on Wednesday by Judge Pamela K. Chen for his June guilty plea to conspiracy and wire fraud charges. The judge also ordered $ 415,000 in restitution.

The judge said $ 175,000 in bribes pocketed by Trujillo from 2009 to 2016 to steer sports marketing contracts from a Miami company to the federation was money “that should have been used to build soccer fields in poor neighborhoods” or buy uniforms for the athletes.

Trujillo said his conscience failed him. He choked up and asked the judge for forgiveness, saying he’d suffered enough.

Speaking through a Spanish-English interpreter, he said his arrest had brought his family “the most terrible shame” after he overcame a poor but happy childhood to become an alternate judge on Guatemala’s constitution court, where he could fight corruption and injustice.

“My intention when I entered the federation was not greed or personal profit,” he said.

Yet, he added, he rationalized the bribes as a reward for years of good work.

“I was blinded,” Trujillo said. “Reflecting on this, I have been able to understand the magnitude of this shameful mistake that I made.”

Prosecutors had asked that the former general secretary of Guatemala’s soccer federation serve more than three years in prison.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul Tuchmann said Trujillo was similar to dozens of other defendants in the soccer scandal because “he seems to think that this was a victimless crime. … It’s not a victimless crime.”

He said that attitude had been a longstanding problem with soccer officials worldwide.

“That culture of corruption needs to be stopped and deterred,” he said.

Defense lawyer Florian Miedel asked that Trujillo serve no more prison time after the month he spent incarcerated after his December 2015 arrest in Port Canaveral, Florida, during a Disney cruise. Trujillo, free on $ 4 million bail, has been staying in Miami.

Miedel called him the “least culpable” of more than 40 people and marketing agencies linked to soccer in the Americas who were indicted or delivered guilty pleas since 2015. Many charges involve bribes paid around the organization of regional tournaments and World Cup qualifying games.

In court papers, Miedel noted that among 27 soccer officials charged in the case were one-time presidents of soccer federations in Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Guatemala, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Paraguay, Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, Brazil, Venezuela and Uruguay.

“FIFA needed a serious wakeup call,” he said.

The judge echoed the remark at sentencing, adding that it was an open secret before arrests began that FIFA officials were eager to accept bribes.

“Bribery was rampant,” she said. “It was all over the world.”

After Wednesday’s sentencing, Acting U.S. Attorney Bridget Rohde explained how so many foreign soccer officials fell into the U.S. judiciary system. She warned that anyone who uses U.S. banks to facilitate corruption, including bribes, will be prosecuted.

The head of New York’s FBI office, William F. Sweeney Jr., said those charged in the case have taken advantage of the most popular sport in the world by using “their positions and power to use bribes and kickbacks to satiate their greed.”
