How One Florida Woman Lost 23 Pounds — and Gained $1,200 With a Free App

When Missy Novak stepped on the scale and realized she’d lost 8 pounds, she felt alarmed. In her words, she’s “a woman of a certain age,” so unexpectedly losing weight isn’t always good.

Then she realized the culprit: Shopkick.

Thanks to the shopping rewards app, she’d kicked her sedentary lifestyle and had become more active. It pays its users to complete certain tasks, like walking into a retailer or scanning an item’s barcode. Users then exchange these points for gift cards.

Since Novak started using Shopkick less than two years ago, she’s made more than $ 1,200 and has lost about 23 pounds.

How? She walks. And walks, and walks, and walks. Shopkick is like a scavenger hunt, taking her from retailer to retailer, aisle to aisle.

“I might be a little addicted to it,” Novak admits.

How Shopkick Works

First, download the Shopkick app through iTunes or Google Play.

Then, start earning “kicks” when you complete certain tasks, which include:

  • Walking into an affiliated retailer, including Walmart, Target, TJMaxx and more.
  • Scanning barcodes on Shopkick-listed products.
  • Taking a photo of your receipt that includes qualifying items.
  • Purchasing particular items with a connected credit or debit card.
  • Shopping online.

Don’t make the mistake of buying things you don’t need — just for kicks. And remember you can earn kicks without even making a purchase.

Once you accumulate enough kicks, exchange them for a gift card. For example, 500 kicks will score you a $ 5 Target or Walmart gift card.

And hey, you just might drop a few pounds, too.

Wednesday is 7/11, and That Means Free 7-Eleven Slurpees for Everyone!

It’s that time of year when an ice-cold beverage really hits the spot. And when that ice-cold beverage is free — well, then it hits your wallet quite nicely, too.

Wednesday, July 11, 2018, is 7-Eleven Day, also known as “Free Slurpee Day.” That’s because simply entering any participating 7-Eleven convenience store between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. on 7/11 (get it yet?) gets you a free small Slurpee.

If you’re a member of the 7Rewards program (buy six 7-Eleven drinks and get the seventh one free), you’ll get twice the perks because your free Slurpee counts as a “punch” on your loyalty card app, taking you one step closer to scoring yet another freebie.

But wait, there’s more!

Turn Every 7th Slurpee Into a Freebie

Free Slurpees are cool enough, but the 7Rewards app is pretty cool, too.

Just download the app on your iOS or Android device, and you’re on your way to any free self-serve drink, including Slurpees. Scan your app with every self-serve drink purchase (coffee, Slurpee, Big Gulp, Chiller Iced Coffee, etc.), and when you reach six purchases, you get the seventh for free!

Any size cup counts toward your free seventh drink. What’s more, you can choose any size you like as your freebie. So, you could buy six small Slurpees and still get the largest available size as your freebie.

If you want to maximize your free Slurpee savings on July 11, you could hit six 7-Elevens for freebies and scan your rewards app at each one, then score the free seventh Slurpee, giving you a Slurpee buzz that would make Bart Simpson jealous.

We’re not saying this is recommended on either a health or an ethical level, but, you know… you could.

4th of July Sales For Men – J. Crew Factory free shipping & double dipping, 20% off Goodfellow & Co., & More

IT’S NOT JUST A HANDFUL. IT’S A HOEDOWN.

hoedownin

Why hoedown? Too much for a handful. Enjoy the long weekend fellas… that is, if you’re lucky enough to get some time off.

J.C.F.: 50% off Most Everything + Extra 20% off & Free Ship w/ SUPERSTAR

J. Crew Factory

What was an extra 15% off to start the week has now jumped to an additional 20% off AND you get free shipping too. Suits & Sportcoats aren’t getting the cut, but it seems like the rest of J. Crew Factory’s basics are in fact getting this half off PLUS an additional 20% off that sale price. UPDATE: Sorry fellas, looks like the shorts aren’t getting the extra 20% off cut. But they are shipping for free.

Spier and Mackay: 15% off all regular priced suits/sportcoats/trousers w/ JULY4th

One of the best values in suits and sportcoats just got even better. Yes, sizes are scattered since it’s Spier, but it’s worth a look if you’re in the market for a new suit or sportcoat. Suits with the code now start at $ 279, and sportcoats now start at $ 169. Not bad for half canvas and bemberg linings. Runs clear through Sunday July 8th. Head here for a review of their slim fit, and here for a review of the contemporary fit.

Massdrop (or Amazon) Orient Mako II – $ 129.99

Orient Mako II

Massdrop has the Hacking and Hand Winding Orient Mako II diver for $ 129.99 right now… but so does Amazon. And with Amazon, it ships immediately (no waiting for the pre-order) AND it’s not final sale. Sold direct by Amazon at post time too. So… yeah. You’ll want to go with Amazon over Massdrop this time for sure.

GAP: 40% off Everything w/ GO4th + Extra 10% off & Free Ship w/ MOREFUN

GAP

Appears to be exclusion free? I believe? Just a reminder about the math. There are two codes here, but 40% off and then an additional 10% off does NOT equal 50% off. That extra 10% comes off the marked down price. So, if your purchase is $ 100, that’s 100 x .6 = $ 60, and then $ 60 x .9 = $ 54. Close to 50% off, but not quite.

J. Crew: 30% off Select Styles w/ ALLSTARExtra 20% off Select w/ THESKIMM

J. Crew

In case you missed it Sunday. There’s also a twenty dollar off $ 100 code JCSM18 floating about, but you can only use two codes at a time. They should stack though, depending on exclusions. More info over here.

Massdrop: Junghans Max Bill Auto. Watch – $ 729.99 FINAL

Junghans Max Bill Auto. Watch

That’s a lot of cash to drop on a wrist watch. But? Seems like some of you fellas are down with that (as far as threads and the social media channels indicate). Made in Germany. Automatic movement that hacks and hand winds. Timeless Bauhaus looks. 38 mm in diameter and 40mm from lug to lug. Convex hard plexiglass crystal with SICRALAN coating. Final sale though, being that it’s Massdrop.

Target: 20% off Clothes w/ JULY4

Target

Just a warning. Goodfellow & Co seems to fit a little wonky for some guys. There can be quite a gap between sizes. So, lucky you if it fits great off the rack. Code expires at the end of the day on Wednesday.

Todd Snyder: Further additions/reductions to Sale & Clearance

Todd Snyder

Just a warning… sizes are scattered at best. And in the clearance section there’s a few final sale items. So be careful with those. No returns for the final sale stuff.

Todd Snyder Part Deux: New Timex Marlin Blackout – $ 199

Timex Marlin Blackout

Not on sale and almost certainly gonna sell out. Still tiny. Still hand wound. Head here for a review of the silver version. Big thanks to Aaron K for the tip!

Brooks Bros: Up to 40% off Select Spring & Summer Styles

Brooks Brothers

Great for those of us who love Brooks Brothers… yet don’t usually operate on a Brooks Brothers budget. Personally, I’m a big fan of their Regent fit sportcoats. Especially when on double sale like this.

Huckberry: Astorflex Chelsea Boots in Sabbia (neutral) or Cuoio – $ 90 ($ 180)

Astorflex Chelsea

Still half off. Still made in Italy, still super comfortable, still shipping and returning for free. And still quite a few sizes left.

Allen Edmonds: 40% off Select Bourbon & Merlot

Allen Edmonds

Still going on. Still a hell of a deal. Huge fan of the Allen Edmonds Merlot shade around these parts (see a full How to Wear it for their Merlot McAllisters here). Also know that the Bourbon shade can be a bit divisive. Some people LOVE it. Some think it can look a little striped and/or greenish in some lights. Anyway, $ 249 is a hell of a price for timeless Allen Edmonds first quality shoes. Deal runs clear through July 22nd.

UNIQLO: Select 4th of July Deals & Free Shipping No Min!

UNIQLO

Feels like it’s a more extensive promotions section for the 4th of July weekend. And? Lots of their warm weather stuff is on sale. Like airism t-shirts and boxer briefs. They’re an inexpensive choice for many.

Cole Haan: Extra 40% off Sale Items w/ EXTRA40

Cole Haan

Lots of snobs like to rag on Cole Haan, but many guys have had some measure of success with the brand. Is full price too steep? Of course. But this stuff is already on sale AND its getting an extra 40% off. So, not bad. Careful though… lots of final sale here. No returns or exchanges on that stuff. So click wisely.

Nordstrom’s Anniversary Sale is Coming

Nordstrom

Another reminder before you get sloshed on cheap beer and go hog wild with your credit card this weekend. Nordstrom’s Anniversary sale is easily one of, if not the most anticipated sale of the year. Head here for what it looked like last year. If you’re a Nordstrom card-member, you get early access from July 12th – 19th. The sale goes live to the general public on the 20th. And yes, we’ll have our favorites from the sale ready to go for you to peruse.

How to Watch the 2018 World Cup Games Today Online for Free, Including France vs. Argentina

The field of 32 teams in the World Cup 2018 in Russia has been cut in half, and the World Cup round of 16 games start on Saturday, June 30.

Germany, the reigning World Cup champion and a favorite to repeat and grab the title again, has been eliminated after a lackluster performance. But soccer powerhouses Brazil and France are very much alive, as are Argentina and Portugal, thanks to their mega-superstar players Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

In fact, the 2018 World Cup games today feature both of those soccer stars in two exciting matchups: France vs. Argentina and Uruguay vs. Portugal.

When is the France vs. Argentina game scheduled to start? If you want to know when France and Argentina play, and how to watch the World Cup 2018 for free on TV, or how to live stream France vs. Argentina and other games for free, you can check out our comprehensive how to watch the World Cup guide, or just scroll down for the key details.

What Channel Is the World Cup 2018 France vs. Argentina Game On?

Both World Cup games today — Argentina vs. France and Portugal vs. Uruguay — are being broadcast in English on Fox, and in Spanish on Telemundo.

Here’s the schedule for round of 16 World Cup 2018 games today, and in the days ahead:

World Cup Games Saturday, June 30

• France vs. Argentina, 10 a.m. ET, on Fox and Telemundo
• Uruguay vs. Portugal, 2 p.m. ET, on Fox and Telemundo

World Cup Games Sunday, July 1

• Spain vs. Russia, 10 a.m. ET, on Fox and Telemundo
• Croatia vs. Denmark, 2 p.m. ET, on Fox and Telemundo

World Cup Games Monday, July 2

• Brazil vs. Mexico, 10 a.m. ET, on Fox and Telemundo
• Belgium vs. Japan, 2 p.m. ET, on Fox and Telemundo

World Cup Games Tuesday, July 3

• Sweden vs. Switzerland, 10 a.m. ET, on FS1 and Telemundo
• Colombia vs. England, 2 p.m. ET, on Fox and Telemundo

If you have satellite or cable TV, simply find your local Fox station to watch World Cup games in English, or Telemundo if you want to watch the Spanish broadcast.

Even if you don’t have a pay TV package, you can still watch the World Cup games today for free. All you need is a digital antenna, which can cost under $ 30 and provides free, over-the-air broadcasts of networks like ABC and Fox. You can also watch Spanish broadcasts of the 2018 World Cup on Telemundo for free in most of the country with a digital antenna.

How to Live Stream Argentina vs. France Online for Free in the World Cup 2018

As we detailed in our previous story on how to watch the World Cup 2018 for free, it is indeed possible to live stream World Cup games without necessary paying a monthly bill—for cable or a streaming service.

Here’s the gist:

Every World Cup game can be streamed in English with the Fox Sports Go app. There is no charge for downloading and watching via the app, but you must log in with an appropriate pay TV provider account to get access.

To get the Spanish broadcasts, you can stream World Cup games in any browser at TelemundoDeportes.com, or with the Telemundo Deportes En Vivo or NBC Sports apps. Up until June 25, you could stream World Cup games live for free on Telemundo in a browser, without any log-in. Now, however, you must log in online with a pay TV account to live stream the World Cup that way.

Most live-streaming TV services will also let you watch the World Cup online. Services including Hulu Live, Fubo TV, DirecTV Now, Playstation Vue, Sling TV, and YouTube TV all have packages available with some or all of the channels broadcasting 2018 World Cup matches.

Each of these services has a free trial period, allowing you to watch at no charge for roughly one week. Just remember to cancel the service if you don’t want to pay the monthly fee, which will cost $ 20 and up.

The PMRC’s ‘Filthy 15’ Pop Songs Are Now a Profane Celebration of Free Expression

Photo Illustration by Elizabeth Brockway/The Daily Beast

Recently, a theatrical modern musical composition called The Filthy 15 debuted in London at the Barbican, a venue known for its edgy events and performances. From what I saw of it online it looked a bit tedious and dull, but the idea of the piece is profound and inspired, and anyway it’s coming to the U.S. and Canada, and hopefully will be better rendered when it gets here.

The Filthy 15 is the creation of Canadian Gen X’er Nicole Lizée (pronounced Lee-zay), who grew up in the dawn of MTV with the appropriate pre-teenage angst required of a 12-year-old in 1985, and was disturbed by that year’s U.S. Senate hearings on rock-music lyrics.

The title refers to the original notorious list of 15 songs held up as examples of the sort of toxic lyrics kids were being exposed to. The hearings, which carried the full and serious weight of potential legislation against popular music, were themselves inappropriately instigated by Tipper Gore and Susan Baker, spouses of Sens. Al and James respectively, and two other prominent Washingtonian better halves, Pam Howar and Sally Nevius. The four horsey-class women of the threatened cultural Apocalypse formed an association called the Parents Music Resource Center (better known as PMRC), which sounded far loftier and more solid and thoughtful, and less barmy, than it really was.

How Kids Can Get Free Summer Meals in All 50 States and Washington, D.C.

For millions of children, summertime isn’t a carefree vacation.

Children who receive free meals at school during the academic year often struggle to find similar support during the summer.

To address this problem, the U.S. Department of Agriculture offers the Summer Food Service Program to make sure low-income children still have access to nutritious meals over summer.

How big is the impact made by the summer food program? Last year, about 3.8 million children were served at more than 50,000 summer-meal sites across the country, a USDA spokesman said.

How to Access the USDA Summer Food Service Program

Brittanee Harris serves bagged lunches to children at Northside Boys and Girls Club. “I think it’s very important,” said Harris. “It helps parents because they may not have the means to provide a lunch.” Tina Russell/The Penny Hoarder

To find out if you meet the income requirements for free meals, check this chart here.

Planning a Summer Family Road Trip? These 9 Free Apps Will Make it More Fun

Nothing ruins a car trip more than being asked “Are we there yet?” a half dozen times before even reaching your halfway mark.

Keeping the kiddos entertained during a family road trip is a top priority. Here are nine free apps that’ll help make your next long car ride go a little smoother.

‘Read’ a Book

Just because the kids are on summer break doesn’t mean they can’t get some reading in. But some children — and grown-ups — experience motion sickness if they try to read words on a page — or a screen. The solution: audiobooks.

  1. Hoopla: If your local library uses the Hoopla app, you can check out audiobooks at no cost. There are hundreds of titles for kids and teens. There are even children’s audiobooks in Spanish. Hoopla also offers access to music, TV shows and movies — but you don’t have to tell the kids that.
  2. OverDrive: OverDrive is another app that public libraries offer to patrons for free. This service is similar to Hoopla (and also provides access to streaming videos), but The Penny Hoarder contributing writer Emily Young tells us there isn’t a monthly cap on how many titles you can check out like with Hoopla. Contact your local library to see if it partners with this app.

Make Your Own Music

If you’re on a long trip, listening to the same songs on the radio can be tiresome. Let the kids create their own music with these apps.

  1. Piano: With Gismart’s Piano app, your back-seat passengers can learn to play popular songs on the keyboard even if they’ve never had a formal lesson. The app turns music lessons into a game. Just make sure to pack a set of headphones! If your kid isn’t into the piano, Gismart also has similar apps that teach people to play the guitar, ukulele and drums.
  2. Karaoke: The whole family can get in on the fun with Gismart’s Karaoke app. Let the kids take turns selecting the genre and song. They can also play around with different animated masks and audio effects. Don’t forget to hit the record button for future embarrassing playback. This app is available to download only via Apple’s App Store.

Learn a Language

You may be trapped in the car, but you can still take the time to try something new. After all, you probably have plenty of time on your hands. These kid-friendly apps will help the kiddos pick up a new language — or at least a few foreign vocabulary words.

  1. Duolingo: The Duolingo app uses games to teach children (and adults) how to speak over 25 different languages. It’s even testing a course in Klingon for “Star Trek” fans. Make this a learning opportunity for the whole family, because even with headphones on, your kids will be repeating words and phrases aloud.
  2. Stories by Gus on the Go: This language learning app uses classic children’s stories to help kids learn Spanish, French, Greek or Hebrew. Though this free app was built as a sequel to the original Gus on the Go app (which costs $ 3.99 to download), it can be used by kids who already understand some words in another language. This app is available to download only via Apple’s App store.

Prevent the ‘Summer Slide’

Studies have shown that some children have trouble retaining knowledge after being away from school all summer. These apps can help them use what they’ve learned on the way to that vacation destination.

  1. Mad Libs: Adjective? Adverb? Your kids can practice using the right word choices with the tech version of the classic Mad Libs game. The goofy stories they create will likely cause back-seat giggles.
  2. Money Pieces: This app from The Math Learning Center will help your future Penny Hoarders understand the value of different pieces of currency while reinforcing basic math skills, like counting and addition. The Math Learning Center also has a variety of other free apps to teach more advanced math skills, like fractions and geometry.
  3. Geo Touch: Going on a road trip is the perfect opportunity to teach kids a little geography. Young travelers can learn about U.S. states, state capitals, state flags and other countries around the world with the GeoTouch app. This app is available to download only via Apple’s App store.

Apple will fix busted MacBook ‘butterfly switch’ keyboards for free

TwitterFacebook

Apple is finally taking some responsibility for the troubles assailing some MacBook and MacBook Pro owners with broken keyboards.

The company’s new “keyboard service program” pledges to replace individual keys and — whenever it’s necessary — entire keyboards on certain, more recent MacBook models. Although it’s not outright stated, the move almost certainly stems from troubles Apple has faced over a new keyboard design that was first introduced in 2015.

In its never-ending quest to deliver the thinnest possible laptop, Apple completely redesigned the MacBook keyboard in a 12-inch model that launched in 2015. The larger keys had less travel, and responded to light taps thanks to each key’s fragile “butterfly switches.” Read more…

Spier Suits for $275, Free Shirt Deal at TheTieBar, & More – The Thurs. Men’s Sales Handful

Sales that deserve some attention heading into the weekend or a bit earlier. Might not be some massive once a year event, but still worth a look. Those are what make up these handfuls. Five of the better sales, one for each finger, are below, plus bonus sales if need be. Included are a few picks worth pointing out.

Spier & Mackay: Save $ 107 when you buy 2 Suits

Spier & Mackay

Suits that are regularly $ 328 – $ 398 per, now drop to $ 275 – $ 344.50 per. Yes, it’s a kinda funky discount, but it applies to both their regular Australian wool suits (drops them to $ 275 per) or their fancier Italian wool suits (drops those to $ 344.50 per). Not bad considering they’re ALL half canvas construction and available in slim or contemporary fits. It is Spier & Mackay though, so expect sizes to be scattered. And yes, it does work if you mix and match an Aussie wool suit with one of their Italian wool suits.

Massdrop: AE Chukka 2nds – $ 179.99 FINAL | Loake Pimlico Chukka – $ 204.99 FINAL

AE & Loake Chukkas

It’s a gall-darned chukka party over at Massdrop right now. The issue… is that they’re both final sale. No returns. It’s a pre-order model, so, they’re not keen on taking stock back. So there’s a real risk there with shoes. Especially if they’re 2nds like the AEs. Made in the USA for the Allen Edmonds and make in the UK for the Loakes.

Todd Snyder: 30% off Select Items

Todd Snyder

This is a weird one, because some of the items are 30% off, some are a little MORE than 30% off, and some are a little less. Beats me. But hey, it’s nice to see at least a little mid-season discounting from Todd Snyder. Sizes are scattered on the suits. They’re made in Canada from Italian fabrics though, so if you land one, lucky you.

Allen Edmonds: Warehouse Sale in their Clearance Section

Hat tip to Eric J. for the heads up on this. I haven’t seen prices like this on AEs in a good long while. Yes, there’s some funky designs in there, but suede strands? Just in time for the warm weather? Yes please.

TheTieBar: Free Dress Shirt w/ Purchase of $ 150+ w/ BREEZY

The Tie Bar

The Combo Pick: THREE Dress Shirts for $ 140 + Knit Silk Pointed Tip in Navy  = $ 165 AND you get a free fourth shirt

Doubling up the discount here. Confirmed that this should work from the good folks at TheTieBar. If you want to stock up, grab three of their pretty darn good dress shirts for $ 140 (usually it’s $ 55 per, or, the bulk deal is 3 / $ 140). Then add something small, like one of their new-ish pointed tip silk knit ties. Perfect for summer. That trips the $ 150 balance and you end up with a free shirt. You’ll have to manually add that 4th shirt to your cart, since at checkout they just drop $ 55 off your bill once you nip past $ 150. So if you don’t want a tie, by all means, just go for four shirts.

BONUS  J. Crew: 30% off Select w/ SHOPTOIT

J. Crew Unsuit

The Pick: J. Crew’s Un-Suit Jacket & Matching Pant – $ 175.60 ($ 266)

Last day for this. Full range of picks over here, including some wheelhouse wool suits. No, you don’t need to buy the entire suit to get the savings. Just want a sportcoat? Totally fine. Looking for a pair of slim lightweight pants for summer, but don’t need the jacket? You can do that too. Head here for a full review of these suits.

Lyft and United Way Are Giving Free Rides to 2-1-1 Callers in 12 Cities

Not having access to a set of wheels is the worst — especially if you live in a transportation desert or when you don’t have the financial means to hail a ride from an app.

No one wants to cancel a doctor’s appointment or job interview due to lack of transportation.

To help solve the problem, Lyft has partnered with United Way to provide free rides to residents in need in 12 cities. Transportation seekers just need to contact 2-1-1, a free, confidential help line operated by United Way that gives referrals and information 24/7 to people needing essential services.

The free Lyft rides are now available to residents in Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Cleveland, Denver, Houston, Milwaukee, Nashville, Orlando, Philadelphia, San Diego and San Francisco.

The service is made possible through the ride-hailing company’s Lyft Relief Rides program, which provides free rides to people in crisis. Free transportation will be available on a one-time basis to get people to and from nonemergency medical appointments, veterans services, job interviews and other employment-related stops.

Mary Sellers, the U.S. president for United Way Worldwide, told The Penny Hoarder 2-1-1 would do its best to accommodate those who need transportation on repeated occasions. However, the free Lyft ride service is not designed for those who need transportation on a regular or everyday basis.

Sellers said transportation assistance is among the top unmet needs for the help line. Last year, 20% of the more than 250,000 transportation requests 2-1-1 received could not be met with existing resources.

“By partnering with Lyft, we’re better able to meet community needs by helping individuals get the services they require,” Sellers said in a news release.

Lyft recently committed $ 1.5 million to its Lyft Relief Rides program.

According to United Way, the partnership with Lyft may expand to additional cities if the program is successful in the 12 pilot cities.

Discover Is Offering Employees a Free College Education. Here Are the Rules

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, Walmart should be pretty flattered right now.

Why? Because Discover, the financial-services company, just announced a similar plan to the retail giant’s for sending employees to college (minus the whole $ 1 a day thing) — right down to two of the schools involved.

The gist of the new benefit is pretty much the same: Discover will now give all U.S.-based employees the opportunity to earn a bachelor’s degree for free.

The Discover College Commitment

The new benefit, called the Discover College Commitment, will be available to all U.S.-based full-time or flex part-time employees who want to receive their first bachelor’s degree. According to the company, nearly 90% of its employees who do not have a postsecondary degree work in the customer care centers, which are all U.S.-based.

After any grants have been applied, the company will cover any remaining tuition, fees, books and supplies. Tuition will be paid directly to the employee’s school of choice, while spending on qualified books, supplies and fees will be reimbursed.

Eligible employees can enroll in online degree programs at three universities — Wilmington University in Delaware, Brandman University in California or the University of Florida — and can choose from one of a few select degree paths.

Through Brandman University and the University of Florida, employees can earn a bachelor’s degree in business administration, while employees who choose Wilmington University can earn a bachelor’s degree in organizational management, business management, software design and development or computer and network security.

The new program is in partnership with Guild Education, which will provide academic counseling to employees to help them find the right program for their educational and personal development.

There is no tenure period involved (meaning qualifying employees can take advantage of the Discover College Commitment as soon as they choose). However, employees must be in active status and in good standing within the company. They also must meet certain expectations within their role and maintain at least a 2.0 grade-point average or higher.

Employees should note one important thing, though: If a Discover employee is terminated, all tuition, fees and reimbursements that the employee received within the 24 months prior must be paid back.

Education Assistance Through Discover

Before offering fully paid bachelor’s degree programs through the College Commitment program, Discover already had a few education assistance opportunities in place for employees.

The In-Network Degree Assistance program provides employees with as much as 90% of the tuition costs, or up to $ 5,250 for an associate’s or bachelor’s degree or $ 10,000 for a graduate degree annually, for accredited, in-network colleges that are outside of the College Commitment program.

The company’s Out-of-Network Degree Assistance program will cover up to $ 2,500 for an associate’s, $ 5,250 for a bachelor’s or $ 10,000 for graduate degree annually at an accredited university outside the Guild Education university network.

The company also offers employees a leadership-education program, an on-site MBA program and an internal professional-development program — so while the College Commitment Program may be new, the company’s assistance for employees advancing their education and careers is not.

“Investing in our employees and their futures will not only make us a stronger company, but have a lasting positive impact on those who might otherwise never get the chance to attend college,” said Jon Kaplan, vice president of training and development at Discover, in a news release.

Low-Income Youth in Los Angeles Receive Free Swim Lessons Through Kaiser Permanente’s Operation Splash

PASADENA, Calif. — Kaiser Permanente and the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks kicked off the 13th year of Operation Splash at Glassell Pool in Los Angeles to encourage parents and kids in low-income neighborhoods to learn to swim and to reduce drownings.

“We believe people need both health and health care. That’s why we support community activities like Operation Splash,” said Edward Ellison, MD, executive medical director and chairman of the board for the Southern California Permanente Medical Group. “Our hope is that by providing swim lessons and junior lifeguard lessons across Los Angeles once again this summer, we can not only provide young people and adults with an essential life skill, but we can help them to stay healthy, have fun and really thrive.”

Kaiser Permanente awarded a $ 408,000 grant in 2017-2018 to the Department of Recreation and Parks Aquatics Division for Operation Splash which increases opportunities for safe physical activity and aims to decrease drownings, especially for African-American and Latino children, who historically have low aquatics participation rates. According to the national USA Swimming Foundation, nearly 64 percent of African-American children and 45 percent of Latino children cannot swim.

The Operation Splash Junior Lifeguard program allows youth between 10-17 years of age an opportunity to improve their swimming skills and receive a basic understanding of water rescue and first aid. The Junior Lifeguard program also teaches job skills that enable students to qualify for future employment as lifeguards at pools and beaches.

“I was 5 or 6 years old when I first tried learning to swim and I was terrified,” said 23-year old Kahlif Carter of South Los Angeles. Growing up, no one in his neighborhood was a swimmer, but he enrolled in Operation Splash when he was approximately 10 years old. “I remember I didn’t want to move up in swim class because I was afraid of the deeper water.”

Through Operation Splash, Carter overcame his fears and went on to join the swim team, play high school water polo, become a junior lifeguard and is now a lifeguard at Cabrillo Beach. “I’ve come a long way and I’m really proud of myself. Now, I’m learning to surf. I hope my story inspires other kids to put their fears aside and take the plunge.”

This summer season, Kaiser Permanente’s Operation Splash grant underwrites swim lessons for 6,000 children, teenagers and adults; provides junior lifeguard scholarships for 780 youth; and increases participation in the Rethink Your Drink Campaign, which raises awareness about the unhealthy impacts of sugary beverages and the benefits of drinking water. Swim lessons will take place at 36 pools in Los Angeles and junior lifeguard lessons will be offered at 48 sites.

“Swimming is a survival skill that everyone should be equipped with. The city’s various aquatic facilities provide plenty of accessible options for increasing one’s confidence in the water, ranging from learning how to swim to competitive engagement through water sports and team building,” said Mike Shull, general manager, Department of Recreation and Parks. “The option to beat the heat by making a splash should be at the top of every family’s list and swim lesson enrollment is the first step to a fun and safe summer.”

“Learning to swim can save your life,” said Renata Simril, president and chief executive officer, LA84 Foundation. “Drowning claims the lives of about 3,500 people each year and nearly 25 percent of them are children under the age of 14. The problem is particularly daunting in ethnically diverse communities, where the drowning rate is almost three times the national average. That’s why it is so important to educate parents and children on the importance of learning to swim.”

Operation Splash is part of Kaiser Permanente’s Healthy Eating, Active Living (or HEAL) efforts to reduce obesity in the community by increasing opportunities for safe physical activity and access to healthy and affordable foods. Kaiser Permanente has granted nearly $ 7 million for Operation Splash since the program’s inception. Based on its success in Los Angeles, Operation Splash has expanded to six other Southern California cities, bringing its total pledge in 2017–2018 to $ 856,143.

Additional Operation Splash grants for summers 2017 and 2018 include:

  • City of San Bernardino, Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department, San Bernardino: $ 79,500
  • City of Riverside, Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department, Riverside: $ 84,150
  • Desert Recreation District, Coachella Valley Recreation and Park District, Indio: $ 84,150
  • City of Bakersfield, Department of Recreation and Parks, Bakersfield: $ 53,550
  • City of Ventura, Parks, Recreation, and Community Partnerships Department, Ventura: $ 53,293
  • Friends of Chula Vista Parks and Recreation, Chula Vista: $ 93,500

Please visit the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks’ website at www.laparks.org, or call 323-906-7953 for information about participating pools in the area.

Good News: Free Pizza. Bad News: It Requires a Trip to Chuck E. Cheese

I was allowed to have two birthday parties growing up.

And by two parties I mean, one when I turned 5 and one when I turned 16.

I vividly remember my fifth birthday party being at Chuck E. Cheese.

The intriguingly creepy animatronic rat, or Charles Entertainment Cheese, as I’m sure he prefers to be called, captivated a generation.

Now as I fondly remember playing Skee-Ball, whack-a-mole and fearing for my life in the ball pit, I wonder: What was that purple thing playing the keyboard in the band?

Really, what is he?

But to more pressing matters: free pizza.

You can get a free personal one-topping pizza on your next visit when you sign up for Chuck E. Cheese’s More Cheese Rewards program.

In addition to free pizza, you’ll get a $ 10 reward for every three visits when you spend over $ 20 and unspecified treats on your birthday and half-birthday.

Everyone forgets the half-birthday.

And after all that, if you can’t make it to the arcade restaurant, you can now get the pizza — and a goody bag — delivered to your door.

10 Free and Thoughtful Father’s Day Gift Ideas

As Father’s Day quickly approaches, many of us are wondering what gift to get dad this year. Barbecue grills, TVs, and golf clubs are great, but sometimes all it takes is a message of appreciation, straight from the heart. While you can purchase a really cool gift (check out the Ultimate Buy Black Father’s Day Gift Guide for some ideas) there are other ways to honor fathers and father figures.

Here are some creative gift ideas to honor dad on his day.

Use your camera to film a short documentary. Ask siblings, kids, and extended family members to share their favorite stories and the best advice they’ve ever received from dad.

Host a Father’s Day Cook-off Competition. Invite family and friends over to recreate some or your dad’s favorite meals. Of course, dad is the judge and chooses the winner.

Create a customized coffee table book. Include family events such as weddings, graduations, and father-daughter-son moments from your childhood.

Sign Dad up for a class. If he’s been talking about learning how to fly a helicopter or paint, find a class and sign him up.

Write a short personal essay or poem. Talk about key events in your childhood or the influence your dad has had on your life. (E.g., 10 Life Lessons I Learned From Dad.)

Build something. Whether it’s a birdhouse, shed, or backyard deck, if your dad loves spending his free time making things, these are all great bonding experiences.

Make a playlist. Pick some of dad’s favorite songs and create a playlist for him. As an added touch, include a few songs that remind you of him and save them to a USB flash drive.

Volunteer in the community. While honoring your dad on Fathers Day, donate your time to helping others who are less fortunate.

Plan a Father’s Day Olympics. If your dad loves sports, a day of competitive activities, such as swimming, a relay race, or even basketball, will make his day.

Spend quality time. Nothing beats quality time with family. Whether it’s spending the day watching movies or barbecuing in the backyard, the memories made are priceless!

How to Watch the 2018 NBA Finals Game 1 Online for Free

The 2018 NBA Finals tip off Thursday night, with the Golden State Warriors facing the Cleveland Cavaliers in the championship for the fourth year in a row.

It’s the first time ever in NBA Finals history that two teams square off for the league championship in four consecutive years. For that matter, the 2018 NBA Finals marks the first time in any major sport that the same two teams are facing each other for the championship title four times in a row. (In the NHL, the Detroit Red Wings played the Montreal Canadiens in the Stanley Cup Finals three years in a row, and in Major League Baseball the New York Yankees and New York Giants met up in the World Series in three consecutive seasons.)

As for 2018 NBA Finals predictions, Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, and the rest of the Golden State Warriors are strong favorites to beat LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers. As many observers have noted, this year probably represents LeBron James’s toughest test yet, seeing as he must face the heavily favored Warriors without All-Star guard Kyrie Irving (who was traded to the Boston Celtics) and without a fully healthy Kevin Love (who was injured in the previous series and may miss at least Game 1 of the NBA Finals).

Here’s everything you need to know about watching Game 1 of the 2018 NBA Finals, including what time the game starts, what channel it’s on and how to live stream it — no matter if you’re watching on TV or want to live stream the Cavaliers-Warriors.

What channel is Game 1 of the 2018 NBA Finals on?

The 2018 NBA Finals are being broadcast on ABC. If you have a TV and access to free, over-the-air channels, all you have to do is find your local ABC channel and tune in. If you don’t have a cable TV package with networks like ABC, you most likely can still watch the NBA Finals for free with a digital antenna designed to get reception of free broadcast channels.

What time Is Game 1 of the 2018 NBA Finals tonight?

The ABC broadcast of Game 1 of the NBA Finals will start at 9 p.m. E.T., on Thursday, May 31. The NBA Finals Game 2—which like the rest of the series is also on ABC—is set to air at 8 p.m. E.T. on Sunday, June 3. Game 1 and Game 2 are both being played at Golden State’s home venue, Oracle Arena in Oakland, California. Here’s the full 2018 NBA Finals schedule.

How to live stream the 2018 NBA Finals

If you prefer to live stream the 2018 NBA Finals online for free on a laptop, smartphone, or other device, you can watch the games via the ABC app. Bear in mind, however, that ABC will require you to log in online with a participating pay TV provider account.

If you don’t have such an account, you can still stream the 2018 NBA Finals by using a live-streaming TV service such as Hulu Live, DirecTV Now, Playstation Vue, Sling TV, or YouTube TV. All of these services have free trial periods of around one week for new subscribers, and in many markets the packages include free broadcast channels like ABC.

Live-streaming TV packages generally range from $ 20 to $ 40 per month, after the free trial period is over. Remember to cancel the service if you don’t want to pay after the trial period ends.

‘Queen Sugar’ Recap: Season 3, Episode 1: Does The Truth Set You Free?

Queen Sugar Ep 301 — Photo Credit: Skip Bolen / @2018 Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. All Rights Reserved

The Bordelons are back and in the season 3 opener, it looks like we are in for another complicated ride with this interesting, perplexing, fascinating and sometimes frustrating group. Nova (Rutina Wesley) is hell-bent on her activism, as usual, after dumping her white police boyfriend Calvin (Greg Vaughan) for the cause after he professed his love and left his wife last season. (Damn shame, they had such amazing chemistry.) Right before a story is rejected by her newspaper, she finds out that a New York publishing house wants to sign her to a book deal.

It could be a dream come true for Nova, but we suspect that although they want to make her the next Ta-Nehesi Coates, a white editor might be an issue. Well, she’s not sure if she wants the deal just yet. Oh, Nova, go ahead and get that money!

Money is flowing these days around the Bordelon family. Even though her man Hollywood (Omar Dorsey) is getting a big settlement check from the oil rig explosion, Aunt Vi (Tina Lifford) is doing fine on her own. She’s got the pie business. Meanwhile, her man is hovering around her like she’s a delicate flower just because of her lupus diagnosis. But c’mon, Vi’s pretty strong. She wants Hollywood to give her some room. But he’s not having it because that ain’t the kind of man he is. Oh, we feel it, Hollywood.

Instagram Photo

Charley (Dawn Lyen Gardner) and Micah (Nicholas Ashe) have moved into a big, pretty mansion and out of the mill. Now that she’s in partnership with the shady Boudreaux family, we can’t blame her for wanting some space away from work. (Her kitchen, though!!) She signs the deal with them for the mill, holding on to her 1% ownership ask, knowing that it will give her access to the financials. So she’s surprised to find out the Landry family is in debt after they’ve put up a big stake to partner with her. Uh-oh. Let’s hope that wasn’t just as smooth a chess move on their part. Remy (Dondre Whitfield) ain’t feeling Charley or the Bordelons at this point. He won’t even sit with the family when they see him out. Guess he’s set up to be the #1 hater this season.

Ralph Angel (Kofi Siriboe) is having some issues with Darla (Bianca Lawson) gone. He’s still fine as hell, though and the local women are smelling him like a shark smells blood now that he’s single. But don’t get caught up ladies, Ralph Angel ain’t hardly in an emotional place to settle down. With Darla just away as far as Blue knows, he’s becoming a different child – acting out, not following directions and generally giving Ralph Angel a hard time. With everyone else caught up in their own lives, they don’t have a lot of time to step in and help, so Ralph is doing the best he can. But it might be time for Blue to get an old-school beating. Maybe time outs are just not working.

A Black Lives Matter anthem protest happens at a big high school basketball game attended by the whole family. This protest inspires Micah (Nicholas Ashe) and goes well with his new hobby – photography. His mother, meanwhile, has hired someone to find out what’s going on in the police department. And guess what, turns out a whole damn lot. The officer who traumatized Micah has done it to others. And somebody got it on tape.

But this episode’s most devastating moment is when Ralph Angel gets the results of his paternity test. He is NOT Blue’s biological father. Wow. We didn’t see that one coming. Ralph Angel doesn’t expect it to change things, but man, he could be so wrong about that.

Here’s to another season of the Bordelon fam!

‘Battlefield V’ will apparently be free of loot boxes

TwitterFacebook

Surprise, surprise.

Despite speculation Battlefield V would include cosmetic-only loot boxes, meaning players could only score items that customised a character’s look, the feature has reportedly been cut.

An EA spokesperson told Kotaku that there are “no loot boxes” in the game, set to release in October. It follows the well-publicised controversy over loot boxes which surrounded EA and developer DICE’s last release, Star Wars Battlefront II, for months.

Typically, a loot box contains random items which would help players obtain new abilities and materials to create and improve their weapons. When the Star Wars Battlefront II beta landed in October, players complained about the game’s frankly ridiculous loot box system.  Read more…

Minnesota Student Beats Black Teacher But Walks Free

A Minnesota student who viciously beat a Black teacher was released without bail Thursday after a court hearing.

Corey David Burfield, 18, of St. Paul, was charged with one count of first-degree assault and one count of third-degree assault in the violent beating of school aide Mohammed Dukuly on Tuesday (May 22) at Harrison Education Center, an alternative high school in Minneapolis.

District Judge William Koch determined that Burfield, who is white, was not a flight risk during the student’s appearance in Hennepin County District Court. Burfield was allowed to walk, only having to submit to electronic home monitoring and keeping away from Dukuly. The student also is required to meet with a mental health professional, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported.

Burfield’s case mirrors that of several white males who get slaps on the wrist for violent crimes because they are seen as “lone wolves” or mentally unstable individuals. Verdicts such as Koch’s are often offered as examples of White males using privilege to get leniency.

Though Dukuly made a miraculous recovery, the fact stands that he was still brutally assaulted. The decision to release Burfield without bail didn’t sit well with the teacher’s family.

“Quite frankly, we are disappointed,” Imam Mohammed Dukuly, the victim’s uncle, said. “For a serious case like this, I think he should’ve been on bail.”

The scary incident involving Burfield and Dukuly also sheds light on a turbulent and disturbing history of assault at Harrison. Several violent events between students and administrators have occurred as community members have complained that special needs children’s issues have gone unaddressed, the Star Tribune said.

Dukuly’s assault may also further conversations about special education, with stronger efforts for improvement across the nation.

ENTERTAINMENT UPDATE:

Gluten Free? These Apps Make It Easier to Grocery Shop, Cook and Eat Out

Celiac disease affects about 1% of the American population.

For people with the autoimmune disorder, ingesting even trace amounts of gluten — a protein found in wheat, barley and rye — can damage the small intestine.

My partner Nick has celiac disease, which means our house is gluten-free.

The more than 200 symptoms associated with celiac disease can make diagnosis challenging, according to the Celiac Disease Foundation. Common symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea and other digestive problems; seizures and migraines; fatigue; muscle soreness; rashes; and oral health issues like canker sores, enamel defects and cavities.

Exposure to gluten over time can heighten an affected person’s chances of developing cancers and contracting other autoimmune disorders like Type 1 diabetes, epilepsy, infertility, multiple sclerosis and anemia.

So it’s crucial for people with celiac to ensure they’re not ingesting gluten directly or via cross-contamination (using cookware, dishes or utensils that have touched gluten, sometimes even if they have been washed).

Since Nick has celiac disease and we live a gluten-free lifestyle, we only dine out at restaurants with true gluten-free options.

A number of gluten-free apps have made our lives easier in that regard. And because we’re true penny hoarders, we make use of all the free ones.

Here are some of our favorites.

Best Gluten-Free App for Eating Out

A person walks out of a kitchen in a restaurant.
Carmen Mandato/ The Penny Hoarder

Dining out can be a dangerous occasion for people with celiac, but because everyone deserves some time out of their own kitchen, Nick and I try to find restaurants that cater to people with celiac.

Here in Nashville, we’ve found some nice local spots that do a good job of gluten-free like The Red Bicycle. But some larger chains make a good effort, too, including Red Robin and Chipotle (just make sure to ask them to change out the ingredient bins and the spoons and put on fresh gloves).

How do you know if a restaurant is gluten-free? And how can you be sure they are held accountable?

Our favorite app for dining out is Find Me Gluten Free, and users agree. It has 4.5 stars in the Google Play store and 4.8 stars on the App Store.

Find Me Gluten Free is the perfect app for finding restaurants in your area or when exploring new places. The app allows you to search by current location, address or by category and shows you how expensive restaurants are (for budget-friendly consumers). You can also read reviews to determine how celiac-friendly a restaurant actually is.

This is big for people with celiac. Many restaurants claim to have gluten-free options but don’t have processes in place to reduce the chances of cross-contamination and haven’t properly trained their staff to handle gluten-free needs.

By reading comments from others with celiac, you can determine how likely your chances are for cross-contamination.

Comparable alternatives include AllergyEats and Dine Gluten Free.

Best Gluten-Free App for Dining In

A bag of food that's advertised as gluten-free.
Tina Russell/The Penny Hoarder

Because Nick has suffered contamination during many of our dining out experiences, we tend to eat at home most nights. I’ve been called stingy in past relationships for not wanting to dine out, so I welcome this change of pace.

We find a lot of our recipe ideas from the gluten-free cookbooks lining our kitchen shelves or by simple online searches.

Sometimes, though, Nick and I will fire up the iPad and open our favorite gluten-free recipe app, Cookpad (4.4 stars on Google Play and 3.9 stars on the App Store).

Cookpad is a recipe sharing app that allows you to search by dietary restrictions, but it also has a social aspect. Overbearing but well-meaning relatives who have wanted to learn how to accommodate Nick’s celiac disease have joined the app, and we can all share recipes we have tried.

The app also lets you keep a food diary, so Nick and I can track our favorite recipes without dog-earring our cookbooks or bookmarking a webpage on my office desktop upstairs.

Best Gluten-Free Apps for Shopping

A man looks at the apple selection at a grocery store.
Carmen Mandato/ The Penny Hoarder

Luckily, Nick does most of the shopping for our family, but when he’s out of town or busy with a project I’ve had to brave the store to hunt and gather that week’s meals.

Ingredients labels at Kroger (specifically Kroger-brand items), where we shop most weeks, have gotten a lot better at identifying when foods have gluten or other “red flag” ingredients in them, like peanuts, milk and soy.

Still, some food items can be less clear, and I often find myself wondering if something has gluten in it because gluten will not typically be the ingredient listed. Instead, you’ve got to look for words like “wheat” or “barley.”

The number of times I have forgotten if oats have gluten is embarrassingly high, but now I just use The Gluten Free Scanner (3.4 stars on Google Play and 4.7 stars on the App Store).

Using this app is incredibly easy, though I have had trouble in one Kroger near my house where I always have a terrible signal. The app uses your phone’s camera to scan a barcode and instantly pulls up the product to let you know if it’s gluten-free.

I have had great luck with most products I’ve scanned, though it is by no means comprehensive. The paid version’s database is likely more complete and comes at the cost of $ 3.99 on the App Store.

One caveat: Reviewers on Google Play have commented that the app seems to be incompatible with the Samsung Note 8.

A comparable alternative is Gluten Free Food Finder (Android only).

A celiac diagnosis can be overwhelming: It means you must change your diet completely and get accustomed to a new way of dining out and shopping for groceries. These apps make the gluten-free lifestyle a little more manageable and help you prioritize your health every day.

Timothy Moore is an editor and freelance writer. His favorite apps are Find Me Gluten Free, FitBit, Netflix and Ticket to Ride.

This Tech School Is Offering a Year of Free Tuition — With an Unusual Twist

Over the last few years, we’ve seen a new trend arise that involves free tuition at various colleges across the United States.

It’s a trend we’ve been loving, as we’re excited to see higher education become more accessible to more people, especially with the ever-rising cost of college and the ever-growing trillion-dollar student loan epidemic.

But while one year of free tuition helps with recruitment and getting students started at these colleges, the new problem these schools are facing is retention. Plenty of students will take advantage of these free first year (or two) of tuition offers, but many end up not staying around to finish their degrees.

So, when columnist Matt Reed, who writes Inside Higher Ed’s “Confessions of a Community College Dean,” suggested making the second year of college free instead of the first, a technical college in Ohio was all ears.

BOGO Tuition at Ohio’s Marion Technical College

In an effort to encourage students to stick around and see their college education through, Marion Technical College is offering students a year of free tuition after they successfully complete one year as a full-time student.

That’s right — it’s buy one, get one on college tuition.

The school was trying to figure out a way to not only attract students, but to retain them beyond that enticing first free year.

By making the second year free and including the stipulation that students must first complete a self-paid year of full-time classes (meaning at least 30 hours of coursework over two semesters), the school hopes to not only bring in students who are excited to learn, but also give them incentive to stick around and excel.

The old model, which included a free first year, Reed noted in his original proposal, “imposes a significant cost increase just as students are entering the home stretch,” making it more likely for them to walk away.

The new model would make it an easier decision to see the degree through because students would have already invested their own money in their education during the first year.

This method, Reed writes, “answers the cultural desire for ‘skin in the game’ by having students work for it.”

Marion Tech’s president, Ryan McCall, had been searching for a way to make the free tuition promise he had been seeing pop up around the country work for his own students. McCall says he had been looking into ways to make summer coursework free for some students and also trying to figure out how to encourage them to continue.

After reading Reed’s article on Inside Higher Ed, McCall posed the question: “Do we stick with the summer idea or do we try to go further and expand it to the idea of providing students with a second year free after they’ve proven they want to do the work and be here?”

The school decided to go further and run with Reed’s idea.

How “Second Year Free” Tuition Will Work

BOGO tuition at Marion Tech, a system now known as the “Get to Next Scholars” Program, will provide incoming students with a second year of up to 35 credit hours for free.

To earn the year of free tuition, students must complete one year of full-time work — at least 30 hours of college-level courses — with at least a 2.5 grade point average.

Students will also receive a $ 100 stipend toward books each semester for both years, along with access to a dedicated adviser who will help them choose their education path.

In the end, the scholarship program’s goal is to increase Marion Tech’s completion rate.

Amy Adams, Marion Tech’s vice president of planning and advancement, says incoming students in the program will be supported every step of the way in an effort to ensure they feel financially and emotionally secure in their education.

“We want to make sure they have the right support group, so we’re looking at these students as a cohort coming in,” Adams says. “They’ll be assigned an academic adviser so they’re all on the right pathways and taking the appropriate classes, not falling behind, not feeling overwhelmed, and meeting as a group.”

Since the Get to Next Scholars program is still in the pilot stage, it will be a little while before the school sees exactly how the BOGO tuition is affecting retention and completion rates.

“Primarily,” McCall says, “this is about helping students get their degree in a shorter time frame and for less of the cost.”

Here’s How to Get a Kids’ Book From Barnes & Noble — Totally Free

No matter how intent your kids are on staying outdoors this summer, there are going to be rainy days.

And now that I’m thinking about it, in today’s screen-mediated world, maybe it’s a challenge to get your kids to go outside in the first place.

Either way, there will be summer days when kids populate your couch. Wouldn’t it be great if there were a book in their hands instead of your phone?

Better yet: Wouldn’t it be great if you got that book for free?

Free Summer Reading for Kids at Barnes & Noble

The Barnes & Noble Summer Reading Program is back for the 22nd year in a row. That means children in grades one through six will once again have the chance to earn free books.

All your kids have to do is read any eight books this summer and record them in this Summer Reading Journal.

Then, help them bring it to your local Barnes & Noble, where they’ll choose from a selection of free books, divided by grade level.

This is not a ploy to get subpar books off the shelves — these are titles you and your kids actually want in your collection. I mean, Judy Moody!

The program runs from May 15 to Sept. 3. Be sure to check with your neighborhood location to make sure it’s participating.

GAP 40% off No Exclusions + Extra 10% off & Free Shipping

40% off w/ THANKU + 10% off + Free Shipping w/ EXTRA

Gap sure is a bit divisive these days. Either you appreciate the heritage brand doing their best, and take advantage of the sales (like this one), or, you think the quality stinks and they’re not worth shopping at anymore. Yet if you’re the latter, you almost certainly shop at H&M.

Beats me.

ANYWAY. Big thanks to Jesse R for the tip on this one. No exclusions, and the 40% off + an extra 10% off (no, that’s not 50% off, it’s 46% off because the extra 10% is deducted from the reduced 40% off price) deal is unusually good. By the way, if you’re the asshole in Rouen France who used our business credit card to have one hell of a fun day at the movies (yes, I googled the name of the business), I’m coming for you. And all of your family. And I’m starting with the family, so you can witness their suffering. I’ll take finger tips from distant relatives first, then ears from first cousins, and the closer I get to you I’ll take progressively bigger pieces. Watch La Poste.

Wearlight Khakis in Slim or Straight Fit with GapFlex – $ 32.37 ($ 59.95)

GAP Wearlight Khakis

Well hello there, what’s this? Chinos specifically engineered to be more lightweight and breezy for the warmer months? Perfect 97% cotton and 3% spandex here. Four basic, versatile shades for both the slim and straight fits.

Elastic Braided Belt or Chino Web Belt – $ 16.17 ($ 29.95)

GAP Belts

Perfect for the warmer weather ahead. Something to mix it up. A heavy leather belt just doesn’t always look right wrapped around a pair of lightweight linen pants. So, try suede or something webbed or woven like these. And the free shipping no minimum with the code really helps here.

Wearlight Jeans in Slim Fit with GapFlex in Dark or Light Indigo – $ 37.77 ($ 69.95)

GAP Wearlight Jeans

Give ’em credit. GAP is trying to keep up. While the likes of spendier brands like Bonobos lead the way with Summerweight jeans, it’s the cheaper places that are now releasing their own, lighter weight, supposedly more breathable denim for summer. Quite the fabric blend here: 80% Cotton, 10% Polyester, 8% Elasterrell, 2% Polyurethane.

GAP “Clean” Mac Jacket – $ 69.12 ($ 128)

GAP "Clean" Mac Jacket

Everything you want and nothing you don’t. It’s amazing how good a basic, not too fussy, mid thigh mac can look. Young or old, it’s a great staple to have on hand. 70% cotton and 30% nylon here. Chambray trim details.

Slim Fit 55% Linen / 45% Cotton Chinos – $ 37.77 ($ 69.95)

GAP Linen/Cotton Chinos

An almost half and half linen cotton blend should make for airy, but not transparent chinos. Lots of colors to pick from, and those wide stripes are a nice departure from the norm.

Lightweight Colorblock Bomber Jacket – $ 48.57 ($ 89.95)

GAP Lightweight Colorblock Bomber

I think more than a few of us are gonna dig the looks of this one. And bombers are very much in. Cool to see GAP doing something a little different here with a classic short jacket style. Extremely well reviewed. And that’s saying something.

GAP Basic Belts in Brown, Black, or Light Brown – $ 21.57 ($ 39.95)

GAP Basic Belts

The champ. Basic for sure, but well executed and is often excluded from normal GAP codes. Not this time. I’m still here for these. And great zeus I hate that phrase. “I’m here for…” Can we stop saying that now? It’s the Tide Pod challenge of slang.

10″ Chino Shorts in 55% Linen / 45% Cotton – $ 26.97 ($ 49.95)

GAP Cotton/Linen Chino Shorts

Not all cotton like cheaper options. A little more than half breezy linen and the rest being sturdy cotton. Should cut down on the weight and open up the fibers a bit for more air flow.

Straight Fit Jeans – $ 32.37 ($ 59.95) or SlimFit Flex Jeans – $ 37.77 ($ 69.95)

GAP Jeans

Two pairs, two fits, and both are a classic dark blue that should go with everything. Usually excluded from codes and promos since they’re jeans.

70% Cotton / 30% Linen  Bomber Jacket – $ 48.97 ($ 89.95)

GAP Cotton/Linen Bomber

Another bomber option, only this time in a summery blend of cotton and linen. Three colors to pick from. Now under fifty bucks thanks to the 40% + extra 10% off.

GAP Slub Cotton Polo – $ 16.17 ($ 29.95)

GAP Slub Cotton Polo

Slub weave fabric has that super-casual, uneven texture to it. Lots of colors. Lots. Somehow missed these in the most recent polo-palooza. But if past is prologue, expected these slub-fabric numbers to be casual. Real casual.

Color Khakis in Slim Fit with GapFlex – $ 32.37 ($ 59.95)

Color Khakis in Slim Fit with GapFlex

Another basic that usually gets excluded more often than not thanks to their being… well… basic wheelhouse pants. 98% cotton and 2% lycra. Plenty of saturated colors to pick from. Slim fit.

Vegan Suede Chelsea Boot Sneakers – $ 37.77 ($ 69.95)

GAP Chelsea Sneakers

Yes, giving these another mention. Because somewhere between ultra hip and dad style, there’s these. They look comfortable, that’s for sure.

Vintage Wash Straight Fit Khakis w/ GapFlex – $ 32.37 ($ 59.95)

GAP Vintage Wash Straight Fit Khakis

Thick thigh chums! Heed my call! Tired of all the slim to skinny pant fit coverage? Here’s some straight fits for you and me. Made in their worn in but not worn out vintage wash fabric. Usually excluded since they’re khakis (and popular), but not today.

GAP 55% Linen / 45% Cotton Cardigan – $ 37.77 ($ 69.95)

GAP Cotton/Linen Cardigan

Cardigans don’t get the respect they deserve. Layers are great, but constantly putting on and taking off a pullover can leave you looking like you just stuck your fingers in a light socket. Cardigans solve that problem. This one is a blend of linen and cotton. Perfect for spring, and that cool/crisp texture of linen is always welcome.

Casual Mac Jacket in Twill – $ 69.12 ($ 128)

GAP Twill Mac

Unlike the “clean” mac, this one is all cotton twill. No nylon or poly in there to help rain bead up. But it should still keep you dry in everything but a downpour.

Leather Biker Jacket – $ 229.50 ($ 425)

GAP Leather Biker Jacket

One day, the Schott. But today? I dunno, you usually get what you pay for when it comes to leather jackets. So this could still be a risk. But man they nailed the design, and the price is awfully tempting. Almost always excluded since it’s leather apparel or leather accessories.

The GAP 40% off code THANKYOU + extra 10% off and free shipping, no exclusions code EXTRA expires today, 5/1/18. Rouen must be nice this time of year.

‘Westworld:’ Why Dolores Needs to Break Free From Wyatt

SPOILER ALERT: This post contains spoilers from the Westworld Season 2 episode “Journey Into Night.” Proceed with caution.

During Season 1 of Westworld, Dolores was a compelling character. Her gentleness, her curiosity, and her love for the beautiful things of the world made her enchanting and mesmerizing. She was very easy to fall in love with, as a character, because of these qualities.

During the Season 1 finale, her Wyatt persona was activated and she became a killing machine. While Wyatt may have helped Dolores break free from her docile programming, she shouldn’t stay in Wyatt too long, or she could kill every host and human left in the park. We know that when she was programmed to be Wyatt before that she did kill everyone — hopefully she doesn’t deliver a repeat performance of that original massacre.

Westworld‘s Wyatt

Wyatt Westworld

Wyatt was first mentioned during the Season 1 episode “The Stray”. When Teddy didn’t have a full backstory, Ford decided to introduce one to him. Teddy believed that the commanding officer he once served under during the war went rogue and killed all of their fellow soldiers.

As the season went along, there were stirrings that Wyatt had kidnapped Dolores and that he was the most ruthless villain ever introduced into the park. This narrative turned out to be a smoke screen for a real event that happened almost 30 years prior. Once Dolores was conscious, Arnold had given her an alternate personality, that of a soldier gone rogue, Wyatt. As Wyatt, she recruited Teddy, and together they killed all of the original robotic hosts and Arnold himself.

Wyatt does not exist outside of Dolores. The actor who portrayed Wyatt in one of Teddy’s memories, Sorin Brouwers, was playing a figment of Teddy’s imagination. As Teddy’s memory got clearer, he could finally see who Wyatt really was: the killer inside of Dolores.

Who Are You Now, Dolores?

Westworld Season 2 Dolores Teddy

When Season 2 kicked off this week, fans got a glimpse of the new Dolores. A Dolores with Wyatt’s full personality running through her. This was not the Dolores we knew and loved from Season 1. This was not the Dolores who loved to paint, who believed in the world’s beauty, this was a cold-blooded killer.

Some fans may love this side of Dolores. After all, she’s no longer the damsel in distress that she was during Season 1. So how much of Dolores is the farmhand’s daughter and how much is she Wyatt? Better yet, how much of Dolores is her true self? Her sentient self? She even asks herself that question during the episode. “This is what the farm girl would say, this is what Wyatt would say, but what would I say?”

Whether you enjoyed the darker, wilder side of Dolores or are curious to see who she is becoming outside of all of her programming, it feels like Westworld is going to be answering that question all season long. However, if Wyatt’s programming stays inside of her too long, will she ever be able to find that voice again or will the cycle repeat all over again?

Westworld is currently airing on HBO, Sundays at 9PM.

BEST DEAL UPDATE:

J. Crew: 30% off + Free Shipping No Minimum

GOSHOP = 30% off Select + Free Ship No Min (exp 4/26)

No minimum spend. No tiers to get that 30% off. Looks like it’s working on a bunch of full price AND sale too. Plus free shipping no minimum? Not bad. Not bad at all. Plus, J. Crew just dropped a bunch of new spring arrivals. As always, picks are limited to items that have at least a decent size selection at post time, unless otherwise noted. But stuff can go fast. NOTE: Looks like J. Crew has really ramped up the inclusion of “J. Crew Mercantile” goods on their mainline site. J. Crew Mercantile = J. Crew Factory. So, don’t be fooled. Okay, off we go…

Ludlow Italian Wool Suit Jacket & Pant – $ 318.50 ($ 650)

Ludlow Italian Wool Suit Jacket & Pant

Mentioned this in the tripod on Monday and there still seems to be a good amount of sizes kicking around. Big fan of that shade of gray. It is fully lined, so it might get hot if you’re wearing it to Las Vegas in July (or, something like that) but at least it’s lined in bemberg. Half-canvas construction. Sold as separates instead of nested pairs, which is great for guys with frames that don’t fit into a standard “drop” zone.

Abingdon Briefcase – $ 96.60 ($ 138)

Abingdon Briefcase

Finally. It’s back. Sturdy waxed canvas and leather accents. Full review here.

Braided Web Belt – $ 13.96 ($ 45)

J. Crew Braided Web Belt

Perfect for the warm weather ahead. A total steal especially considering it friggin’ ships for free.

10.5″, 9″, or 7″  Tech Shorts – $ 33.95 ($ 69.50)

J. Crew Tech Shorts

Y’know what doesn’t happen very often? J. Crew customers agreeing on something in the reviews. But that’s the case here. Very, very well reviewed. Nylon + Spandex combine to make a flexible, breathable, pair of do-anything shorts. Could have a real winner here. Three inseam lengths to chose from. Already on sale.

Ludlow Semi-Brogue Oxfords – $ 208.60 ($ 298)

Ludlow Semi-Brogue Oxfords

A less-fortunate man’s Allen Edmonds Strand. True oxford style. Semi-brogue cap toe and medallion. Pretty darn dressy. Goodyear welted (in China I believe?) and made of Italian leather uppers. Extremely well reviewed.

Palma Sunglasses in Dark Amber Tortoise – $ 41.65 ($ 59.50)

J. Crew Palma Sunglasses

Much, much nicer than I had anticipated, being that these are priced noticeably lower than J. Crew’s previous styles of sunglasses. Made in China of course, but the dark tortoise frames, blue lenses, flat brow piece, and partially metal temple arms, all combine for a super-on-trend look. 52mm lens diameter, but they wear a bit bigger due to the thicker frames.

Ludlow TRAVELER Wool Suit Jacket & Pant in Navy or Grey – $ 417.20 ($ 596)

Ludlow TRAVELER Wool Suit

Special 3-ply wool woven specifically to resist creasing. Plus, unlike the standard Ludlow wool jackets, these are lightweight and only half lined. They honestly feel noticeably more breezy than standard suit jackets (and pants). Some guys like that, some guys don’t.

Ludlow Garment Duffle Bag – $ 173.60 ($ 248)

Ludlow Garment Duffle Bag

And now… some luggage for those who are gonna be travelling with a packed suit or sportcoats this upcoming season. Cotton canvas body, and unzips/unfurls so you can get your suit or jackets (and shoes and what not) to and fro while minimizing creasing and wrinkling risks. Yes, the zippers weren’t designed the best (read the reviews) but attaching a couple of pulls should solve that problem. And most bags like this will run you a heck of a lot more money.

Goodyear Welted Ludlow Chukka Boots – $ 222.60 ($ 318)

Goodyear Welted Ludlow Chukka Boots

Another option from their higher end Ludlow line. Italian leather uppers and Goodyear welted soles. Still “imported” though. Scattered sizes on these.

Waterproof Cotton/Nylon Mac Jacket – $ 138.60 ($ 198)

J. Crew Mac

The lack of simple, classic, mac jackets on the market right now is odd. Nice to see that J. Crew is offering one this spring. April showers and Pilgrims and bla bla bla.

Slim American Pima Cotton OCBD – $ 48.65 ($ 69.50)

J. Crew OCBD

A classic OCBD that comes in a true slim fit and is made from American grown Supima cotton. Tons of colors to pick from. Yes, they’re made overseas, but the reviews are solid. Are there cheaper OCBD options out there? Absolutely.

Kenton Bluchers – $ 138.60 ($ 198)

Kenton Bluchers

A new addition to their shoe lineup. Not from their higher end Ludlow line, but I do believe these are still goodyear welted? All their other Kenton shoes are. Look, nothing fancy going on here. It’s the shoe-iest shoe to ever shoe. Like a less fortunate man’s AE Kenilworth. But that doesn’t mean they aren’t hugely versatile.

Cotton-Linen Crew Sweater in Heather Multistripe – $ 48.65 ($ 69.50)

Cotton-Linen Crew Sweater in Heather Multistripe

Sure appears to be a perfect spring/summer bonus layer to throw in the duffel bag for weekend trips to the lake or mountains. Cotton/Linen blend should help regulate your temperature without being too sweaty like an all cotton sweater would. Linen also lends that crisp texture.

Abingdon Weekender Duffel – $ 159.60 ($ 228)

Abingdon Weekender Duffel

Looks like along with the briefcase, J. Crew has restocked the rest of their waxed canvas Abingdon bag collection. This duffel is NOT some dinky thing. Hardly. 17 1/2″H x 26″W x 9 1/4″D = over 4,000 cubic inches of space. Good for a real weekend away when you want some options.

Field Jacket in Olive Moss or Navy – $ 138.60 ($ 198)

J. Crew Field Jacket

J. Crew’s take on a classic. Head here for a review of this jacket, albeit in a slightly different shade. Extremely well reviewed. Want something similar for cheap? Check out your local army/navy surplus store.

Ludlow Slim-fit Pant in Stretch Chino – $ 34.99 ($ 79.50)

Ludlow Slim Fit Chino

One of their best sellers but beware… their slim fits are a true slim. So if you’ve got tree trunks for legs you can forget it. These used to be their “Bowery” slim fit pants, but are now called the Ludlow. 14.5″ leg opening. Clean hook and bar closure. Another item that’s already in the sale section and is up for the extra 30% off discount.

Kenton Leather Pacer or Cap Toe Boots – $ 173.60 ($ 248)

Kenton Boots

A couple pairs of Goodyear Welted boots. Sure, we’re not in boot season any longer (depending on where you live) but there still might be some time left to wear these before it gets to hot-foot season.

LIGHTWEIGHT Stretch Chino in AthleticStraight, or Slim Fit – $ 47.60 ($ 68)

J. Crew LIGHTWEIGHT Stretch Chino

Lightweight is the key word here. Garment Dyed. Multiple fits and colors to pick from. Again, something that’s nice to grab as a one-and-only shot since it ships free.

Card Case in Camo Italian Leather – $ 31.50 ($ 45)

J. Crew Card Case in Camo Italian Leather

Full honesty: J. Crew’s smaller leather goods have NOT been impressive these last few years. But this one might be an exception? Says it’s made out of Italian leather. And the asking price isn’t bad, plus, it does seem to go up for codes and discounts every so often.

Made in Italy McAllister Desert Boots – $ 103.60 ($ 148)

Made in Italy McAllister Desert Boots

Stitched out welt construction. Three versatile colors to choose from. A little slimmer than some bulkier desert boots. Great for now, great for summer.

The 30% off select reg. price & sale items code GOSHOP is set to expire Thursday 4/26/18. Not quite sure when free shipping no minimum is set to expire?

Your gluten free diet isn’t actually free of gluten

gluten free

Avoiding gluten has become a bit of a diet fad in the past couple of years, but only 1% of the entire population actually has a good reason to avoid it: celiac disease. Nevertheless, it’s become trendy to nix gluten whenever given the chance, but a new study reveals that not only are most “gluten free” foods not actually gluten free, but the amount of gluten consumed by people on supposedly gluten-free diets can easily exceed the amount that would cause issues for someone who actually suffers from celiac disease.

The researchers analyzed the diets of a number of individuals, including some which have celiac disease and some who don’t, to get an idea of how much gluten they are actually consuming. The average adult who doesn’t go out of their way to avoid gluten ingests anywhere between 5 grams and 15 grams of gluten per day. Meanwhile, those with celiac disease can see symptom flares from as little as 50 milligrams of gluten, which makes it clear why they need to adhere to special diets.

“Buy one, give one” programs often benefit people far away, making it hard to visualize the impact of the company’s generosity.

But this program to curb food insecurity hits a little closer to home.

Online grocery service Thrive Market offers Thrive Gives memberships that reduce its $ 60 yearly membership fee to $ 0.

The company says it has 400,000 members and promises wholesale pricing on popular organic food brands, as well as its own product lines.

While the company works with partner organizations to distribute free memberships, individuals can also apply for a Thrive Gives memberships.

How to Apply for a Free Thrive Market Membership

Low-income families can apply for a membership on the Thrive Gives website.

The application asks about monthly income, the number of people in the household, and whether you receive any government assistance. There’s a short essay field where you can explain why you’re requesting a free membership.

Teachers, students and veterans must verify their status before receiving a membership confirmation email.

The free membership lasts one year. When it expires, Thrive Gives members can choose to pay for a membership or reapply for another free membership.

Thrive Market ships to the contiguous United States. The company announced last week that it has begun to offer frozen meat and seafood options. It does not offer fresh fruits and vegetables.

Got questions about your car seat? Get them answered immediately for free

by

Joyce Slaton

posted in Products

Car seats are confusing. And they’re the one thing that stands between your baby and disaster in the event of a crash. Car seat manufacturers are aware of the stakes — and so car seat customer service is unusually responsive, quick, and thorough.

If you’ve tried to ask questions or lodge complaints about products or services in the past, you’ll be shocked at how quickly car seat customer service reps pick up the phone, and how very helpful they are when they do. Even if you call after hours, your messages are quickly returned.

Some car seat makers, like Evenflo and Dorel (which sells car seats under the Maxi-Cosi, Safety 1st, Cosco, and Eddie Bauer brands) even go many extra miles, offering free video chats with car seat techs to parents who aren’t sure their seats are installed correctly. Here’s what each of the following major car seat brands offers and how to get it.

4Moms

This tech-friendly company makes only one car seat — the self-installing model seen above.

What Time Is the NCAA Championship Game? Here’s When and How to Watch Villanova vs Michigan Online for Free

Tonight’s the final night for March Madness 2018, and a national title is on the line. After an amazing tournament full of dramatic upsets that generated both a celebrity nun and free pizza nationwide, the Villanova Wildcats face the Michigan Wolverines in 2018 NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Tournament Championship Game today, Monday, April 2.

Tipoff is scheduled for 9:20 p.m. ET, and the official broadcast begins a 9 p.m. Villanova has the country’s top-ranked offense, and is a 6.5-point favorite to beat Michigan.

If you’re wondering how to watch the 2018 national championship, unfortunately the game is not available on one of the big free networks. The game’s national broadcast is being aired on the pay channel TBS. Two of its sister channels—TNT and TruTV—are also airing the game with commentators specifically for fans of Michigan and Villanova, respectively.

All three networks airing the game are pay TV channels, available with most cable or satellite subscriptions. But even if you don’t have cable, or even a TV, there are still ways to watch the 2018 national championship for free.

How to Watch the 2018 National Championship Game Online for Free

There are several options for live-streaming the national championship on Monday, and yes, you can watch for free. First off, the NCAA March Madness Live app has a Fast Break feature allowing you to watch the game online for free. You are allowed to stream for free during a preview period that lasts roughly three hours, which should be long enough to catch the entire game, assuming you haven’t been using up your free trial period previously.

When the free preview period expires, you will be required to log in with a pay TV account number and password. The Fast Break feature can be used on a browser in your desktop, or on any device after downloading the NCAA March Madness Live app.

The other main option to watch the national championship game online for free comes by way of a free trial period offered by a streaming TV service like Hulu Live, DirecTV Now, Playstation Vue, Sling TV, or YouTube TV. All include channels like TBS with their basic packages, and all come with free trial periods of a week or so for new subscribers.

Streaming TV packages range from roughly $ 20 to $ 40 per month after the free trial period is over. Just be sure to remember to cancel before the free trial ends if you are not interested in paying for the service.

Kaiser Permanente Provides Free Medical Procedures and Cancer Screenings for Community Access Day

LOS ANGELES – Kaiser Permanente West Los Angeles partnered with Venice Family Clinic to host its Community Access Gastrointestinal Day on March 17. Community Access Gastrointestinal Day is a collaborative effort made possible by Kaiser Permanente’s Community Benefit Program, to provide diagnostic colonoscopies and endoscopies to a limited amount of underserved West LA residents, at no cost to them.

Kaiser Permanente volunteer staff and surgeons performed 12 procedures benefiting nine patients at the Community Access Gastrointestinal Day. One patient, Nicolasa Cali, 59, was especially grateful to have received two procedures as part of the event. She was told in January she needed these procedures as soon as possible, but she was worried how she would pay for them and how long she would have to wait to get them.

April Schustz, the specialty hub coordinator at the Venice Family Clinic, said it was likely Cali would have had to wait six months just to get an appointment to see a Los Angeles County gastrointestinal specialist who would then determine if procedures should be ordered. She then would likely have to wait several more months to actually get the procedures.

Cali is just one of many patients with limited or no health insurance. “Even with the Affordable Care Act, approximately 30 percent of patients from Venice Family Clinic remain uninsured. These include undocumented immigrants as well as people who are homeless,” said Rigoberto A. Garcia, director of Health Education at Venice Family Clinic.

“These patients come presenting some very concerning health conditions and risk factors,” said Celia Brugman, Community Benefit health manager, Kaiser Permanente West Los Angeles. “With the Community Access Day program, they leave the facility with a clear diagnosis and the Venice Family Clinic now has the knowledge they need to move forward to help these patients restore their health. This program has a very powerful impact on these patients’ lives and perfectly complements our mission at Kaiser Permanente.”

Kaiser Permanente West LA CAD Team

Kaiser Permanente West Los Angeles Community Access Day team.

The Community Access Gastrointestinal Day event happens during Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month; therefore, endoscopies and diagnostic colonoscopy screenings will be conducted for early detection of colon and rectal cancers. Colon cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in the U.S., but it’s also one of the most treatable cancers. When colorectal cancer is found at an early stage, the five-year relative survival rate is approximately 90 percent.

Additional colorectal screenings will take place at Kaiser Permanente West Los Angeles Medical Center on Thursday, March 22 as part of its colorectal screening day.

Creating healthy communities is central to Kaiser Permanente’s mission and critical to individual health and wellness. At the Kaiser Permanente West Los Angeles Medical Center, contributions to various Community Benefit Programs totaled $ 28,002,536 in 2016.

Your Kids — and the Spring Birds — Will Love This Free Home Depot Workshop

Looking for a springtime project for the kids to create that won’t have you spending a bunch of money at your local craft store?

Well, The Home Depot has you covered.

The home improvement retailer will host a free kids’ workshop on April 7 where participants can build their own window birdhouses.

These little habitats for the birds in your backyard attach to windows with small suction cups. One side is made of a clear plastic pane so your kiddos can observe their feathered friends inside.

Adult supervision is required for this hands-on craft. Though the directions for construction indicate this project is not suited for children under 4 years old, younger kids may enjoy painting and putting stickers on the completed project at the in-store session.

In addition to getting to bring home their DIY birdhouse, participants can also score a free workshop apron, commemorative pin and certificate of achievement (while supplies last).

Although there is no fee, The Home Depot is asking participants to register online in advance. Sign up at your nearest store here. The workshop will take place from 9 a.m. to noon.

If building birdhouses doesn’t interest your little ones, keep checking The Home Depot’s kids workshops site for future events. They’re held monthly at stores across the country.

The home-improvement store also regularly hosts free workshops for adults to learn skills for future projects. Check your local store for details on upcoming events.

21 Simple Ways for Women to Make Extra Money in Their Free Time

Despite what my alumni association and dozens of credit card offers — so cordially addressed to “Mr. Kohler” — would have you believe, I, Carson Kohler, am in fact a woman.

And I’m a woman who likes to make money.

Sure, I have a full-time job with a solid salary and benefits. But I can always use extra cash to help out with rent, groceries and unnecessary splurges.

In my search for income, I found a ton of ways women can make money (without necessarily welcoming unknown humans into your car), including starting a work-from-home business, investing in real estate online and even becoming a mermaid.

21 Ways for Women to Make Money

In the words of Shania Twain: “Let’s go, girls.”

1. Start a Work-From-Home Business

Woman sitting on couch with laptop
Carmen Mandato/ The Penny Hoarder

Working from home is the dream, right?

But sometimes you don’t want to slip into any ol‘ customer service gig. Try striking up your own home-based business. You’ll truly get to set your own hours and determine your week’s workload.

If you’re not sure where to start, this free online course from Proofread Anywhere will lay it all out for you.

Joanna Kelley, a mom of three, discovered Proofread Anywhere and decided to give the free seven-day introductory course a try. Now, she works five to 20 hours a week and makes up to $ 1,200 a month in her own time.

Curious about that free course? Get started with Proofread Anywhere here.

2. Invest in Real Estate (Online)

Want to try real-estate investing — without playing landlord? We found a company that helps you do just that.

Oh, and you don’t have to have hundreds of thousands of dollars, either. You can get started with a minimum investment of just $ 500. A company called Fundrise does all the heavy lifting for you.

Through the Fundrise Starter Portfolio, your money will be split into two portfolios that support private real estate around the United States.

This isn’t an obscure investment, though. You can see exactly which properties are included in your portfolios — like a set of townhomes in Snoqualmie, Washington, or an apartment building in Charlotte, North Carolina.

You can earn money through interest payments and property income (e.g. rent). You’ll get paid via quarterly distributions, plus extra periodic distributions if properties are sold.

(But remember: Investments come with risk. While Fundrise has paid distributions every quarter since at least Q2 2016, your payment is never guaranteed.)

You’ll pay a 0.85% annual asset management fee and a 0.15% annual investment advisory fee.

Interested? Get started with Fundrise here.

3. Stock up Your Coins

Picture of coins in a jar

Acorns is a simple savings and investment app that rounds your credit or debit card purchases up to the nearest dollar and invests the digital change.

You can connect the app to your credit or debit card and let it automatically round up all your transactions, or manually round up only the ones you choose.

Contributor CJ Reid does the latter, accepting roundups of less than $ 0.50, such as her $ 3.60 cup of coffee.

“Rounding up 40 cents here and 25 cents there moves me swiftly enough to $ 5 so that I can begin investing without putting myself into the red,” she says.

Once your round ups reach $ 5, that amount will be transferred from your bank to your Acorns account, and invested into your chosen portfolio.

“Acorns makes it easy to invest by removing the responsibility of choosing individual investments or worrying about trades,” Reid explains. “You don’t need any previous investment knowledge or history.”

And once you get the process automated, Acorns investments make your digital change work for you.

“With a conservative portfolio,” Reid says, “I turned $ 15 into $ 19 within a few weeks.”

Bonus: Right now, Acorns will give you $ 10 after you sign up and make your first investment.

4. Earn Cash Back on Your Purchases Automatically

The Drop app wants to… drop some cash in your wallet.

Link your credit and debit cards, and you’ll earn points whenever you make a qualifying purchase.

This can happen when you’re grocery shopping, hailing an Uber or even ordering a pizza. The points will add up, and you can exchange them for gift cards to popular retailers like Amazon and Starbucks.

You can sign up and download the app here.

5. Teach English Online

Always dreamt of moving abroad to teach English as a second language, but have commitments stateside? Thanks to the internet, you can still share your knowledge with students in China.

VIPKID is hiring part-time ESL teachers to work at least 7.5 hours per week, mostly on weekday mornings and weekend evenings. You’ll need a bachelor’s degree, plus experience working with kids ages 5 to 12.

The base pay is between $ 7 and $ 9 per half-hour session, and with bonuses, the company states you can earn up to $ 22 an hour.

6. Swim out Your Lifelong Dream as a Professional Mermaid

A mermaid performs at Weeki Wachee
Sharon Steinmann/The Penny Hoarder

Y’all. Childhood dreams do come true.

Various parks, aquariums and bars/lounges around the U.S. employ women to perform as mermaids.

We spent a day with professional mermaids at Weeki Wachee State Park in Florida to find out what it’s like living under the sea. We even visited a mermaid-hiring event.

The only catch? You’ve got to be a strong swimmer. You’ve also got to be willing to make at most $ 12 an hour as a Florida state worker.

But, hey, for some, living out a lifelong dream is worth it.

(Note: The park also employs princes.)

7. Serve as a Mock Juror

Like every other person these days, I’ve become obsessed with true-crime podcasts. “My Favorite Murder,” anyone?

If you want an insider look at what happens when a case hits the courtroom, you can serve as an online mock juror. As a mock juror, you’ll help lawyers prepare for real cases. You can earn $ 10 to $ 60 for about an hour of your time.

From your computer, you’ll review evidence including documents, videos and photos.

8. Get Paid to Get Fit

Women exercising
Tina Russell/The Penny Hoarder

Listen. Losing weight and getting fit is easier said than done. (I’ve been saying this for years now, and I haven’t gotten it done…)

But will a little bit of money motivate you?

It’s motivating Marcie Hagner, who has placed a bet on her weight-loss goals through HealthyWage. If she can lose the 50 pounds she bet she could, she’ll pocket $ 862.

Read more about how she’s finding motivation to lose weight through HealthyWage.

9. Consider a Different Kind of Ride Sharing

Detail of woman holding a cell phone

We constantly hear about ride-sharing services, but to be honest, I wouldn’t feel super safe driving into an unfamiliar part of town and picking up an unfamiliar person.

If you do, that’s great. If not, there are some solid alternatives out there, including a ride-sharing service for kids called HopSkipDrive. The idea sparked when three moms, who struggled to juggle full-time jobs with shuffling their kids around town, put their heads together.

You can earn money through the app as a CareDriver, contractors who are thoroughly vetted and pick up kids from school, soccer practice, a ballet rehearsal… you name it. HopSkipDrive says drivers make up to $ 30 an hour.

The service is only available in California right now, but keep an eye out for news of expansion.

10. Earn Cash Back for Online Purchases

If you do a chunk of your shopping online, you could be missing out on some extra money.

Sign up for Paribus, a tool that gets you money back for your online purchases.

It’s free to sign up, and once you do, it will scan your email archives for any receipts. If it discovers you’ve purchased something from one of its participating retailers, it will track the item’s price and issue you a refund anytime there’s a price drop.

You don’t have to do anything.

Plus, if something shows up late, Paribus will help you get money back for what you paid for shipping — up to a full refund.

11. Swipe for Cash Back on Everything

Woman paying with a credit card
Carmen Mandato/ The Penny Hoarder

If you’re looking for a passive way to earn some money throughout the year, a cash-back credit card is perhaps one of the easiest methods.

You just have to be sure you don’t get too carried away with those purchases — and that the card is paid off at the end of each billing period.

Here’s an option we like: It’s the Chase Freedom Unlimited card. Its claim to fame? You’ll earn an unlimited 1.5% cash back on all your purchases. Plus, if you spend $ 500 in your first three months of opening the card (hi, groceries), you’ll pocket a $ 150 bonus.

There’s no annual fee, and the cash-back rewards don’t expire. We checked Credible’s annual rewards calculator, and it estimates $ 417 in annual rewards based on our spending habits.* (You can enter your unique spending habits and see what you’d earn, too.)

Get signed up — and 0% intro APR for 15 months — here.

12. Deliver Takeout

Carmen Mandato/ The Penny Hoarder

Sweet, sweet takeout. Sure, you love it. You probably spend too much money on it. Don’t we all? Earn some of those expenses back by delivering orders to others through Uber Eats.

For Uber Eats, requirements vary by location but tend to require you to:

  • Be at least 19 years old if delivering by car.
  • Deliver via car (must be a 1997 or newer with at least two doors), bike, scooter or foot depending on your area.
  • Pass a background check.
  • Have a valid driver’s license and insurance (if you deliver by car or scooter).

For all the information you need, head over to the Uber Eats sign-up page.

13. Rent out Your Old Baby Gear

Sharon Steinmann/The Penny Hoarder

Are you a mom?

You’ve probably got a lot of baby gear. Think: a crib, a car seat, a playset. Don’t let them collect dust when your kid starts growing out of all that stuff. You can rent out those old baby necessities to traveling parents. Because it costs how much to check a stroller on a plane?!

Check out this peer-to-peer rental site called goBaby. There, parents who are traveling can hit you up for that stroller or car seat so they don’t have to travel with the cumbersome gear.

And you can make some money. Sounds like a win-win.

14. Share Your Unique Experiences

As a freelance blogger, you can work as much or little as you want, so this makes a nice side gig.

Here are some of our favorite resources for freelancers. These include everything from how to make up to six figures to how to keep track of your income.

15. Rent out Your Car

Woman gets in her car
Carmen Mandato/ The Penny Hoarder

If you own a reliable vehicle, but leave it sitting in your driveway all the time, you could turn it into an income stream by renting it out!

Through Turo, you can rent your car to a community of approved drivers.

Here’s how it works:

  • Create a calendar to let travelers know when your car is available.
  • You’ll get notified when someone requests your car. Just coordinate a meeting place, or deliver the car right to the traveler at the airport or other location.
  • Get paid!

Turo will dynamically set your car’s rental price based on market value, location, time of year and other data. For a car with a market value of $ 10,000, Turo suggests you could earn about $ 1,800 a year renting it just five days a month.

You’ll earn 65% to 85% of the trip price, depending on the vehicle protection package you choose. If you provide your own commercial rental insurance, you’ll earn 90%.

Sign up here to get started.

16. Make Money via Amazon

Sure, you might spend a lot of money on Amazon, but you can also make a lot of money on the platform, too.

Consider: Selling products, becoming a work-from-home customer service agent or delivering packages through Amazon Flex. The options are endless… well, until you hit 11 because we rounded up 11 ways to make money on Amazon.

17. Cash in on Minimalism

Living that #Minimalist lifestyle is all the rage right now, so why not use this mentality to your advantage?

Start taking a good hard look at your belongings. What do you actually need? What can you make money from?

  • Clothes: If you have clothes you haven’t worn in the last year, why do you hang onto them? Try selling them to folks in your area through an online marketplace like Letgo. It takes about five minutes to create your account and list an item, and it’s free.
  • Technology: About your overcrowded entertainment center, likely full of outdated music and movies… Consider selling these items to Decluttr. It’ll buy your old CDs, DVDs, Blu-rays, video games and even cell phones and tablets. Shipping is free, and Decluttr pays you within 24 hours of retrieval.
  • Books: Bookshelf collecting dust? We love books as much as the next person, but see whether your treasures are worth anything by simply searching their ISBNs at Bookscouter. The platform searches dozens of buyback sites to see where you could get the most money.
  • Gift cards: While you’re digging out those stiff winter coats, check the pockets. You might come across a gift card or two in there. If you do, sell it for rent money through a gift-card exchange site like Raise.

Ready, set, purge.

18. Sell Your Doodles

If you have a knack for designing and drawing, you can submit your creations to become rubber stamps through an online retailer like Azeeda, formerly Stamp-Press.

As a stamp designer for Azeeda, you’ll submit your designs and, if accepted, you’ll get paid on commission.

Learn more about submitting your designs for stamps, stencils and gift tags.

19. Strike a Prose

Woman walks down road
Heather Comparetto/The Penny Hoarder

I cannot tell a lie: I’ve spent way too long in way too many greeting card aisles.

If you’re struggling to pick out the perfect prose, why not just get paid to write some new cards of your own?

We rounded up eight greeting card companies that will accept your submissions.

20. Get Paid to Enjoy Spa Treatments

Spa day, anyone? Sign me up. Get paid for it? Heck yeah!

Wondering how? Two words: Mystery shopping.

Mystery shopping is the act of posing as a customer but secretly reviewing services and products — and getting paid to do so. You can get paid to go mystery shopping for just about anything, including spa treatments.

Penny Hoarder contributor Steve Gillman put together a list of mystery shopper jobs, and, yes, one includes going to the spa.

You’re welcome.

21. Fill This out While You Watch TV

Surveys aren’t our favorite way to make money, but if you’re just vegging out on the couch, why not click a couple buttons and earn a few bucks?

Here are some of the best paid survey sites we’ve found:

You might recognize the Ipsos Panel name because it’s the same company that does most of the political polling during elections. It also has a survey app called i-Say that pays you for your opinions.

Some of the top-end surveys can pay up to $ 95, but those are rare and can take a while to complete. Most surveys pay a buck or two and only take 10 to 15 minutes.

Also, i-Say rewards you with points you can redeem for cash via PayPal or gift cards to Amazon, iTunes and others. (For example, you can redeem 1,000 points for a $ 10 PayPal deposit).

Opinion Outpost offers surveys from all kinds of businesses and organizations. Most of them take around 10 minutes to complete and will earn you points you can redeem for free gift cards to places like Amazon and iTunes.

What sets it apart from other survey sites is it gives away $ 40,000 every year. It has a quarterly drawing for a $ 10,000 cash prize — and for every survey you complete, you’ll get one entry into the sweepstakes!

OK Now Ladies…

Yeaaahhhh?

Whether you’re looking for ways to make rent, start investing or even just treat yourself to a vacation, it’s time to make some money.

See you at the next mermaid tryouts.

*Annual Rewards amounts will change based on the amounts you enter. The monthly spending category names and definitions may vary among issuers, and categories may not align one-to-one.

Free Flu Shots Benefit Those Most in Need

The number of people sick with this year’s brutal flu continues to decrease across the nation, but experts warn the season is not over yet.

“Many states are still experiencing high influenza-like activity,” said Kalvin Yu, MD, chief integration officer and physician lead, community benefit and public health, Southern California Permanente Medical Group. “As long as flu viruses are circulating, people of all ages should still get their flu shot if they haven’t already.”

To help boost the public’s protection during the worst influenza season to hit the United States since 2009, Kaiser Permanente Southern California teamed up with the California Department of Public Health to expand an innovative approach to deliver free flu shots to areas of need.

Kaiser Permanente recently received more than 1,300 surplus flu vaccines from the CDPH to distribute to nearly a dozen safety net clinics throughout Southern California. The collaboration is in addition to Kaiser Permanente’s partnership with the CDPH to offer free flu shots to children in financially disadvantaged schools.

“Our support of, and partnership with safety net clinics is integral to expanding access to care and improving the health of low-income, medically underserved and uninsured populations,” said Sandra Silva, MSL, director, community benefit, Kaiser Permanente Southern California. “This opportunity to partner with the CDPH is one of several efforts to help reduce health inequities in our region’s under-resourced communities.”

Safety net clinic officials say the free flu vaccines will be put to good use.

“Resources for adult vaccines are very limited, especially for the uninsured,” said Maria Chandler, MD, chief medical officer and pediatrician at The Children’s Clinic in Long Beach. “The donation of flu vaccines means that more resources can be shifted to purchasing other highly needed vaccines for them.”

Jack Tsai, MD, interim medical director and a family medicine physician at The Children’s Clinic, said the free flu shots will also benefit their homeless patients whose medical follow-up is often irregular.

“Preventative measures like vaccinations are among the most helpful interventions that we can provide to these patients who are at higher risk for communicable diseases,” said Dr. Tsai.

Challenging flu virus continues to circulate

The timing of the flu season is unpredictable. The 2017-2018 season began early, and public health officials anticipate flu viruses will circulate for at least a couple more months, perhaps not subsiding until May. This year’s hard-hitting, widespread virus has claimed numerous lives across the country and left thousands more home from work and school fighting body aches, high fevers and other flu symptoms.

With rare exception, the annual flu vaccination is recommended for everyone 6 months of age and older. Public health officials particularly encourage people at high risk for developing flu-related complications to get the shot, including:

  • Children over six months and under age 5
  • Adults 65 years and older
  • Pregnant women
  • People with certain chronic health conditions

Getting a flu shot is one of the most important things we can do to stay well and protect ourselves and loved ones against the influenza virus,” said Dr. Yu, who  practices as an infectious diseases physician at the Kaiser Permanente West Los Angeles Medical Center. “We will work with the CDPH to potentially expand the program next year to even more people in underserved areas.”

Reducing influenza in schools

Smiling Hispanic man and woman and African American girlInfluenza is more dangerous than the common cold for children, whose immune systems are still developing. To help decrease the incidence of flu in communities and school absenteeism, Kaiser Permanente also teamed up with the CDPH, eight Southern California school districts, and local nursing programs to offer the program, “Teach Flu A Lesson.”

With their guardian’s permission, more than 8,500 children at 112 schools across four counties – Orange, Los Angeles, San Bernardino and San Diego – received free, on-campus flu shots last fall through the program, regardless of their insurance status. Kaiser Permanente selected the sites based on data it collected to identify below-average flu vaccination rates in those geographic areas.

“Getting vaccinated can reduce flu illnesses, doctor’s visits, missed work and school days, and prevent flu-related hospitalizations and deaths in children,” said Kathy Kigerl, RN, MN, and chief administrative officer, Southern California Permanente Medical Group. “Next flu season, we are looking to expand to a few additional school districts to participate in the successful program.”

And crazy happened Friday, March 16, when #16 seed University of Maryland-Baltimore County beat #1 seed Virginia 74 to 54. The historic win may have thrown off some brackets, but it can also come with a free lunch.

To get the deal, you have to place your order between 11:30 a.m. 1 p.m. on April 2. If you’re planning on getting the deal in person, the order has to be placed by 1 p.m., even if you were already in line. The offer is only available at participating stores in all 50 states and Washington D.C. Only one combo is available per family.

‘Free! -Take Your Marks-‘ Review: A Decent Love Letter to Fans

While Free! -Eternal Summer had a decent amount of closure to it, fans love these characters and want more. Four years later, director Eisaku Kawanami is here to give the people what they want.

Picking Up Where It Left Off

Free! Take Your Marks the Iwatobi Swim Club

Free! -Take Your Marks- picks up where the anime left off in 2014. Makoto helps Haruka search for an apartment in Tokyo. Rin prepares to leave for Australia, but not before Aiichiro and Momotaro can properly thank him and Sosuke for their help.

Meanwhile, the remaining members of Iwatobi’s swim club work on a plan to attract new members to the team. Despite having placed 6th at nationals, Rei, in particular, worries that their welcome video won’t attract enough members to keep the club going — thanks to a foreboding dream.

The Problem With Multiple Storylines

'Free! Take Your Marks' Samezuka team members

If it sounds like this is a lot for a single film to take on, that’s because it is. While ambitious, the multiple storylines in Free! -Take Your Marks- (which are closer to four separate episodes than a movie) often detract from the characters themselves.

The need to set up each storyline takes priority, which results in cardboard-cutout-like characters. Their actions don’t move the plot forward. Instead, the plot drags them along without stopping to ask if they were ready to go. As a result, we lose much of the emotional depth and heartwarming moments that we’ve come to expect in the anime.

Sure, interesting moments come up. But the payoff is often either unsatisfying or non-existent. For instance, we see that Sosuke’s shoulder injury still bothers him. (The injury that may prevent him from ever swimming again.) While the movie continues to point the injury out, we never learn Sosuke’s plans for the future.

Sosuke in Free!

Is he seeking special treatment? Will he go into sports medicine? We can only assume that he’s going to continue to pursue swimming, but the idea is never explored. Leaving that bit of info out is kind of strange when you consider the entire film focuses on these characters preparing for their futures.

Another missed opportunity occurs when Rin returns home. Although Rin appears happy to spend time with his family, he also makes it clear that he doesn’t spend much time with them. His sister and mother appear to have a bond that rivals the one he has with Haruka. In fact, for a second, it appears that he’s been left behind.

In a sense, this works. Rin will soon pursue his big dream in Australia, so this shows that he doesn’t quite fit at home anymore. But this scene goes by so quickly that the movie misses an opportunity to deepen his character even more.

When It Works, It Works

Free_Take_Your_Marks muscle poses

Despite these missed opportunities, Free! -Take Your Marks- still manages to weave in a few heartwarming moments. When Aiichiro and Momotaro thank Sosuke and Rin with a trip to a spa, we finally get to see Sosuke in a new light. His brooding nature melts away as he has fun with his teammates one last time.

Rin tickles him to get him to smile for a picture and that smile stays on his face for the rest of their trip. It’s a lovely moment for fans of the show who know that Sosuke’s swimming career is over. However, this moment leaves those unfamiliar with the show in the dark.

Haruka and Makoto hunting for an apartment in Free! Take Your Marks

Another slice-of-life moment that works happens during Haruka’s apartment search. Overall, the filmmakers underplay Haruka’s dry yet humorous line delivery. His ridiculously specific expectations and need to remain in his comfort zone are what made him a standout character in the series.

During his apartment search, Haruka turns down several apartments because they don’t meet his unique needs. While other students would be happy with a place that fits their bed, Haruka needs a large bathroom and a grill.

Fans in the know will chuckle at these strange requests. Haru spends much of the series soaking in a bathtub in his swim trunks and cooking and eating grilled mackerel. Moments like this, when their individual personalities come through, are where the movie truly shines.

Pacing and Repetition

Free! Take Your Marks Makoto and Haru

It’s too bad that the film’s slice-of-life moments between the characters fall flat here and drag down the movie. In the series, these scenes helped us to learn more about a member of the team. For instance, when Nagisa ran away and wouldn’t tell anyone why, or when Sosuke decided to coach Aiichiro to help him make the relay team.

These moments didn’t necessarily move the plot forward, but they did serve the plot. Learning that Nagisa’s parents were going to kick him off the swim team and that Sosuke watched over Aiichiro to prevent him from injuring himself as he did, helped us understand why these characters were so motivated to swim.

Haruka and Rei in Free! Take Your Marks

In Free! -Take Your Marks-, heart-to-heart scenes serve a different purpose. They are a gateway to nostalgia. We don’t discover anything new. Instead, these scenes simply reaffirm what has already happened.

We see this when Aiichiro tells Sosuke that he wouldn’t have made the relay team without his motivating words. Aiichiro has already thanked Sosuke in other ways. Telling him this doesn’t serve any purpose other than being a nice thing to say about the past. It won’t motivate Sosuke to solve his current problem, at least not by the time the film ends.

Swimming on Dry Land

Rei and Nigasa swimming on dry land in 'Free! Take Your Marks'

For an anime about swimming, there isn’t much in this movie. Of course, the focus of the anime wasn’t solely on swimming either, but it was always present. In fact, it was so important that it felt like it was its own character. This is why it’s so surprising for Free! – Take Your Marks- to basically eliminate swimming from the equation.

The series spent two seasons telling us how swimming relay brings people together, forging bonds that transcend time. However the characters, now forced to walk separate paths, don’t seem all that concerned with swimming together. It’s a bit of a letdown when you consider how central a focus this is to the show.

Rei in Free! Take Your Marks

Sadly, the lack of swimming led to a lack of drama and competition. As a result, the animation suffers. Not for lack of skill, but lack of opportunity to showcase what the animators could do.

Don’t misunderstand, the film looks great. The backgrounds are vibrant and the characters look like they could leap off the screen at any moment. But the shots of Haruka diving into the water, legs moving like a fish, are sorely missed. We get teased with it here and there in order to build up the big ending. Unfortunately, it isn’t enough to satisfy our need for dramatic, spirit-animal-led races and glorious muscles.

A Fitting Love Letter to Fans

The cast of 'Free! Take Your Marks'

Free! -Take Your Marks- may not be a perfect film, but it is a perfect love letter for fans of the anime. Throughout the movie, fans will find special moments that were included just for them.

We see the return of Hayato, Kisumi’s little brother who was afraid of swimming until Makoto became his coach. We get to see Haru desperately strip down to his swimming shorts to leap into the water. In addition, there are running jokes that carry over from the show, such as Gou‘s obsession with muscles and Momotaro’s obsession with Gou.

He even gifts her a value size bag of stag beetle food after meeting with Gou and the others to discuss a surprise party for Rin.  Their meeting leads to a hilarious misunderstanding that builds like a game of Telephone and ends with Rin and Haru competing against brothers Momotaro and Seijuro.

So, yes, we finally get to see a race.

Is ‘Free! -Take Your Marks-‘ Good?

Yes, and no. Fans of the anime will enjoy getting to spend more time with their favorite guys. However, they may miss the drama and competition that was present in the series and previous films.

In addition, where the second season tied up all of its loose ends, by revisiting the same timeframe the film introduces new plot elements and characters without any resolution. Season 3 will likely pick up where the film left off, but leaving so many questions unanswered is unsatisfying in an anime that claims to be a film.

Aiichiro coaching team Samezuka

However, we do finally get to see each character become comfortable with life apart from each other. They know they will meet again. It’s just a matter of when. Despite its shortcomings, Free! -Take Your Marks- captures the essence of the anime (although imperfectly): bonds formed through swimming last forever.

Unfortunately, this sentiment is lost on those who come into the film with little or no knowledge of the anime. If you’ve been following the series, then this movie is a must-see. Even with all of its flaws, it’s still a feel-good story about friendship that will tide you over until season three starts. For those unfamiliar with the anime, we recommend binge-watching the series first.

ENTERTAINMENT DEAL UPDATE:

You Could Get Free Little Caesars Pizza — but It’s a Ridiculously Long Shot

I don’t know much — actually anything — about basketball, but after an intense 15 minutes of research, I can see that the 2018 Division I Men’s NCAA Tournament is upon us.

With such a prolific event here, you’d be right in guessing there are deals to be found. Thankfully, there are no running drills for this one.

If a 16th-seeded men’s basketball team beats a No. 1-seeded team, Little Caesars will give every family a free Hot-N-Ready Lunch Combo on Monday, April 2.

The Hot-N-Ready Lunch Combo consists of four slices of Detroit-style deep-dish pepperoni pizza and one 20-ounce Pepsi product.

Obviously, I have no clue what seeded college men are — but for pizza, I will find out.

So Who Needs to Win for Me to Score Free Pizza?

You have four chances to win a free Little Caesars lunch combo.

In the South, No. 16 University of Maryland, Baltimore County must beat No. 1 University of Virginia.

In the East, No. 16 Radford must beat No. 1 Villanova.

In the West, the team that wins the March 14 Texas Southern vs. North Carolina Central game must beat No. 1 Xavier.

In the Midwest, No. 16 University of Pennsylvania must beat No. 1 University of Kansas.

If any of those No. 16 teams win, free pizza for — almost — everyone.

All games will take place March 15 and 16. If a No. 16 team does beat a No. 1 team, you must place your combo order at a participating Little Caesars location from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and mention the offer when you check out.

And if you’re going with anyone you’re related to, disown them while you’re ordering because only one person per family can get this deal.

I’d also like to point out that Little Caesars just patented a pizza-making robot, so hopefully, we’ll see a lot more free throws there in the future — hint, hint.

Kaiser Permanente Cancer Screening and Prevention Fair Provides Free Exams and Education

HONOLULU — Kaiser Permanente welcomed over 300 attendees and provided more than 150 free cancer screenings at its annual Cancer Screening and Prevention Fair, held this morning at Waipio Medical Office.

Kaiser Permanente otolaryngologists (ear, nose and throat specialists) provided short physical exams to screen for cancers of the head and neck, which often appear as lesions or spots in the mouth, nose or throat. Risk factors for head and neck cancer include tobacco and alcohol use, so those who smoke and drink are encouraged to participate in regular screenings.

Kaiser Permanente dermatologists examined attendees for evidence of melanoma — the fifth most common cancer in Hawaii — and other types of skin cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 490 cases of melanoma will be diagnosed in Hawaii this year. Like head and neck cancer, melanoma is highly curable in its earliest stages, with a five-year survival rate of 99 percent for localized melanoma.

In addition to screening exams, attendees had a chance to speak with tobacco cessation counselors and members of Kaiser Permanente’s prevention and education department, to receive tips on quitting smoking, improving nutrition, sun protection and living an overall healthy lifestyle.

“Some types of cancers, including those of the head, neck and skin, can be prevented by reducing risk factors such as smoking, drinking or heavy exposure to sunlight. Education, lifestyle changes and early detection through screenings help save lives,” said Susan Amina, APRN, cancer care coordinator at Kaiser Permanente Hawaii. “We’re glad to see so many attendees taking steps toward better health, which includes taking part in preventive care and screenings like mammograms, fecal occult testing and Pap smears.”

The American Cancer Society estimates that Hawaii will see 6,280 new cancer diagnoses and 2,580 cancer-related deaths in 2018; breast, lung, colorectal and prostate cancer are the most common types in the state. Regular screenings, education and an awareness of risk factors all contribute toward detecting cancer in its early stages, when survival rates are often significantly higher.
