Spots to see in NY for “Friends” lovers

So no one told life was gonna be this way? Nope, us neither. Especially when we learned that Friends was finally set to come to an end back in 2004. The show first aired nearly 25 years ago but we still can’t help but scream “PIVOT!” and dream of the Joey special whenever we get the chance. So if you’re heading to New York, don’t forget to add these Friends spots to your itinerary.

The Pulitzer Fountain

There is no better place to start than at the beginning is there? So here we are. The opening credits would be nothing without that iconic fountain scene that made so many of us want to grab our friends and get dancing. But don’t hold your breath. The actual fountain they used is in a studio in California. However, it was designed off this very fountain. Move out kiddos – we’re coming for our turn, and you’re in the splash zone.

The Plaza Hotel

This hotel must be one of the most famous buildings in the world thanks to its many movie and TV show appearances. However, we aren’t here to talk about the contenders; we want the main man. The Plaza Hotel is where Chandler and Monica toast to their engagement, so why not take a visit to the very walls where the famous scenes were shot? If you really want to push the boat out, you could even book a night or two to take in the atmosphere fully.

The apartment

Although the actual filming inside may have taken place on the other side of the country, the apartment building was shot loud and proud in New York. Now you too can take in the sights as you track down the very apartment building that made it all happen. Thankfully, the neighbors are all fully dressed meaning you can take in the view in peace. After all, you couldn’t go to New York and not see the Friends apartment, could you?

The American Museum of Natural History

Surely Friends must have used a real museum for Ross? Nope, you’re out of luck again. Although the New York Museum of Prehistoric History may not exist, there is the perfect replacement when it comes to getting all your dino needs. The museum has a huge prehistoric section on offer, and you can enjoy it all in peace and quiet without the deafening screams of a moist maker in the background. Perfect.

Grab a coffee

Sadly, beneath the apartment blocks lays a restaurant. And the commemorative Central Perk that popped up for the show’s 20th anniversary has since disappeared. However, New Yorkers are known for their love of coffee, and there are so many coffee shops on offer all around the city. Why not spice it up and take one to go so you can enjoy the views of Central Park with your beverage? This way you can have the best of both worlds. We can almost taste it now!

Friends has been, always was, and always will be one of the best shows in existence. Period. And as much as they try and tell us it’s over, we will keep bringing the legendary show back to life! So next time you take a trip to the Big Apple don’t forget all these awesome spots for any Friends lovers out there.

#JusticeForJunior: Family And Friends Mourn The Loss Of Bronx Teen

On June 20, a Bronx teenager was dragged from a bodega, brutally beaten and stabbed by a group of men. That teen was 15-year-old Lesandro Guzman-Feliz, affectionately known as Junior.

According to the NYPD, surveillance video shows Junior trying to hide behind a deli counter, before he was dragged out of the store. He returns bleeding and appears to be told to leave. After the men fled the teen was able to walk himself to a nearby hospital, where he later died, CBS reports.

Junior’s death touched so many people and #JusticeForJunior is trending in his honor.

Thousands of people showed up to his funeral at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church to pay their respects on Wednesday. Pallbearers wore Yankee jerseys and wiped away tears as they carried his casket from the church. They were met with a crowd chanting “justice for Junior!”

Arrests have been made in the case and 7 of the 8 men suspected to be involved appeared in court on Wednesday. All of the suspects are being held without bail and will appear in court again on July 2. The suspects are reportedly members of the Dominican gang known as the Trinitarios. The NYPD has been watching and fighting them for years, ABC reports.

According to ABC, the memorial outside of the bodega where he was attacked has grown so large that officials have closed off the surrounding streets.

In addition to community support, celebrities have shown support to Junior’s family and demanded #JusticeForJunior.

Niall’s friends ‘can’t get hold of him’ after his shock Love Island exit

Here’s what we know so far…

Love Island series 4 is only in its second week, and we’re already obsessed.

Why did Kendall have to be the first to go? Are Danni and Jack in it for the long haul? And, will Alex find love?

There are so many questions already, and we are deeply invested.

This week has been dominated however by the shock departure of one of the public’s top favourite Islanders, 23-year-old Niall Aslam, with his unexpected exit breaking the hearts of Love Island viewers, and his ‘rainbow fish’, Georgia.

‘Niall has left the villa for personal reason,’ ITV announced in a statement, something that fellow islander Alex later confirmed to the group.

‘For personal reasons unfortunately Niall can’t continue or come back to the villa,’ Alex announced to the islanders. ‘I’m obviously sad that Niall’s left the villa. We got on really, really well. He’s such a great guy. And I look forward to catching up with him and having some fun with him outside.’

While ITV is staying tight-lipped about the 23-year-old construction worker’s departure from the show, it has been reported by the Mirror Online, that the decision was down to health reasons, made jointly by Niall and the Love Island bosses.

Causing further concern, The Sun Online reported that Niall’s friends were unable to get hold of him after his departure, with one friend reportedly telling the publication, ‘We don’t know what’s gone on and we haven’t spoken to him so we’re in the dark.’

‘We are as shocked as everyone else is,’ another reportedly added. It’s a shame as he was doing really well and taking the show by storm.’

‘Obviously I was coupled up with him so obviously I came closer to him than most people in here,’ his Love Island other half Georgia explained of Niall after his exit. ‘But it wasn’t just that. He was actually my friend, my buddy.’

Niall has yet to speak out about his exit.

We’re sending him our thoughts.

SPECIAL DISCOUNT UPDATE:

I’ve lost friends because of my postpartum depression

by

Becky Vieira

posted in Life

I’ve lost friends since my son was born. We didn’t grow apart. It’s not something I’m imagining. The relationships are simply no longer there.

Sure, I expected things to change. That I’d have less time to talk or see people as I adjusted to motherhood. But I never thought anyone would exit my life.

Unfortunately, that’s exactly what happened after I was diagnosed with postpartum depression.

I stopped worrying about maintaining friendships and focused on maintaining my will to live. It sounds dramatic — trust me, I know — but that’s what happened. I was depressed. Contemplating leaving my husband and newborn child. Thinking about ending my life. Things were dark for me.

I ignored calls and texts. Begged off requests to visit. Which led me to being even more depressed, convinced my friends hated me. Finally I got help. Medication and therapy. Began to see a semblance of my old life once again.

Mom with PPD lays on floor

My friends were wonderful. Supportive and understanding. Never pushed.

Then I had a relapse and disappeared. Again. I eventually felt stronger and reached out. Reconnected. But it continued to happen. Three, four, now five times.

I wish I could say that I’ve reconnected with all my friends each time. But unfortunately that’s no longer the case. Every time I come up for air I seem to have lost another friend. It breaks my heart. But I understand.

Maintaining a friendship with someone who’s fighting a mental illness isn’t easy. I’m present. Gone. I stop responding to calls, texts and emails. Can’t be relied upon for anything. Fall into the darkness with no way to know when I’ll be back again. If ever.

When I’m able to return to the light I expect life to pick up where I left off. But life for everyone else moves on. Unfortunately, that’s also meant that some people have moved on and away from me.

My son is now 20 months-old, and I know it’s hard to understand how I “still” have PPD. People don’t know that this awful beast can continue to control me.

To all my lost friends, please know this: When I said I couldn’t have visitors because I had a cold, that wasn’t entirely true. I hadn’t slept for 26 hours and threw everything from my linen closet onto the floor in a rage when I couldn’t find something.

When I missed your birthday party it wasn’t because my son was teething. I’d been hysterically crying for so long that my eyes were swollen shut.

And I didn’t ignore your text. I read it. Tried to reply so many times but my clouded mind couldn’t put words together. The longer I waited the more my anxiety grew. Until I deleted it out of fear that you’d hate me. A self-fulfilling prophecy, it turns out.

Mother and toddler son next to statue at zoo

I understand that being my friend is tough. I just want you to know why I fall off the radar. And help you understand what’s going on with me. I’m sure you wonder why I don’t simply tell you when it happens. Because I told you when I was diagnosed. Why have I stopped talking or hiding again?

My mind lies to me. It takes everything in me just to get out of bed and care for my son. I value you and our friendship. But somedays I just can’t do it.

In this case, the cliche is true. It’s not you… it’s me.

If you think you may be suffering from postpartum depression, don’t wonder. Speak up. Talk to you doctor, partner, family and friends. If you are scared or worried about the stigma (I get it… we shouldn’t be concerned about that but of course we often are) and would rather talk to someone outside of your circle, you can call Postpartum Support International at 1.800.944.4773. If you just need a fellow mom to validate you and listen to your fears, find me on Instagram and reach out.

Anxious, overwhelmed, unhappy, or scared by how you feel? If you’re struggling emotionally, you could be depressed. Take this 10-question quiz to find out.

Meghan Markle basically just called Kate Middleton one of her best friends

Despite the rumors you may have heard, Meghan Markle, the newly minted Duchess of Sussex, and Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, get on famously. Not only are they friends, but a recent overture from Prince Harry’s new bride has led us to believe that their friendship is next-level, aka they are best friends.

According to People, Markle gifted her closest pals a custom-made “Kensington” bracelet ahead of the royal wedding. The Zofia Day piece, a simple gold chain anchored by a matching flattened disc, is also now available for purchase — meaning you can be one of Meghan Markle’s best friends, whether she likes it or not. It’s no diamond tiara, but we think the delicate chain is enough to make us commoners feel sufficiently royal (or, you know, royal-adjacent).

The bracelet was given to six of Meghan’s closest friends, including Benita Litt and Jessica Mulroney, whose respective children served as bridesmaids and page boys during the ceremony.

Sisters-in-law, sisters in royal life. Does the Kate-Meghan friendship not read like a network series pitch? C’mon, ABC, you got this.

How and why I made all my new mom friends on social media

by

Becky Vieira

posted in Parenting

I’m still waiting for a book that actually talks about the real realities of new motherhood. How the early days of breastfeeding don’t just hurt, it feels like your nipple is being inserted into a pencil sharpener. How you won’t just be tired, you’ll feel as if you’re the subject of a sleep-deprivation study performed by sadists.

You’ll also be lonely. True, the population of your household will increase by at least one. Friends and family members will be visiting. Your partner may even be home on family leave. There will be more people around you than usual. Yet you’ll feel like you’re stranded atop a glacier in the middle of the ocean. Alone, with no one in sight.

There’s a cure. It’s mentioned, but I found its importance was glossed over. It should be written in bold and surrounded by flashing lights: moms need other moms friends. It’s imperative to our survival as new moms — no, just as moms at any stage. As humans, too.

Two moms each hold a baby on lap and smile at one another

And while befriending any person who is or has been responsible for raising a tiny human, one who’s doing so at roughly the same stage as you is even better. There is something magical about telling a friend, “My child screams like a howler monkey the second we step inside a restaurant,” and hearing “Same here!” in response.

Sounds pretty great, right? It is. However, making those mom friends is difficult. At least it was for me.

I moved in my third trimester and went on bedrest a week later. Sure, I tried to catch the eye of other pregnant women in the waiting room of my ob-gyn’s office or in birthing class. But my haphazard efforts weren’t successful. I gave birth friendless.

Yes, my husband and parents were around. No, it’s not the same.

During the first few weeks of my son’s life I had insomnia. I was nursing a newborn every 2-3 hours and wide awake in between. Despite knowing that screen time would feed my inability to sleep, I logged on. Often.

I was desperate to do online what I couldn’t do in my daily life: make mom friends.

Buoyed by exhaustion masquerading as confidence, I made a bold decision. Choosing full transparency and honesty I came clean on my Instagram account (my social media platform of choice). “I’m lonely,” I explained, in a photo caption. “Scared, with no idea what I’m doing as a new mom. And I need friends. Anyone interested?”

I was flooded with excitement and anticipation when my inbox began filling up. People commented. Introduced me to their friends. I started my journey, albeit a non-traditional one, toward making mom friends.

With a growing confidence I went on Facebook. The BabyCenter Community boards. I began commenting, engaging, responding. I soon had a new group of virtual mom friends. I was blown away by how many others were in my situation and were more than happy to connect.

Instagram became, and still is, my lifeline. I’ve also helped other moms connect there as well. I’ve been supported in the dark days of my PPD journey. I’ve had others celebrate with me, cry alongside of me. And never let me feel alone.

Due to geography I haven’t been able to convert all of my virtual friends into “in person” pals. Most are in other states, a few are even in other countries. Distance has never impacted our connection or friendship.

But I’ve been able to meet up with quite a few. Some even attended my son’s birthday party. It makes me smile when I’m asked how me met and I answer, “on Instagram.” It’s a sign of the times. Our connection, virtual. Yet somehow more real than many other relationships in my life that are face-to-face.

There’s something unspoken that two women share once they become moms. We know. We’ve felt it, thought it, laughed or cried about it. And are happy to be there for others as they experience it, too.

I could have been consumed by loneliness and fear. Yes, I had friends. Some were moms. But none were in the same trench at the same time I was. So I took what was at my disposal at the time — the internet — and made it work for me.

Toddler boys play in water with backs to camera

I didn’t have many other options at 3 a.m. in the midst of a cluster feeding session. It’s not conventional. But it turned my life around.

My husband and I recently moved again. This time I went straight to social media to announce our plans and solicit friends in our new area. I actually had play dates arranged within days of our arrival.

Sure, social media has its downfalls. But it’s also really good sometimes, too. Great, in fact.

Just ask me and my mom friends.

‘MAFS’ Recap: Ryan Ditches Jaclyn to Go Drink With His Friends

It’s scary to commit to forever – especially when you’re Married at First Sight. On the Tuesday, March 20, episode of the relationship reality show, the three couples struggled with what it meant to make their marriages the real deal. Some couples navigated the rocky waters with skill, while others were on the verge of sinking.

Shawniece and Jephte Make Up, Again

Jephte was so upset at the prospect of having to surrender his phone to Shawniece that he walked out. She refused to chase him. After getting some (good) advice from his friend, he left her a few roses as an apology. Later, they discussed their five-year plan and surprisingly, seemed to be on the same page when it came to career, travel and kids.

Molly and Jonathan Still Haven’t had Sex

Molly was committed to showing Jonathan more physical affection. Instead, though, she gave him a gift card to his favorite story for his birthday. Apparently, that did the trick, though! No man has ever been more excited for a gift card.

Jaclyn and Ryan Hit a Rough Patch

During a boys’ night out with Jonathan, Jephte, and Pastor Cal, Ryan revealed that he and Jaclyn were feeling tension about her desire to live a “gypsy” lifestyle, which he wasn’t feeling. Pastor Cal reasoned that she might just want some extended vacations, but Ryan argued that she wanted to move abroad. Instead of going home to Jaclyn (who was sick), Ryan opted to leave the boys’ night to hang with a friend. Jaclyn later told the camera that Ryan was drunk and she was feeling a bit over the marriage.

They talked it out the next night. The conversation was civil, but she revealed that she was worried he wasn’t making space for her in his life. He asked for more slack and she asked him if he just didn’t want to be married at all. He insisted he wanted to be married and they hugged it out … for now.

Kirby’s Friends We Know and Hope to See in ‘Kirby Star Allies’

I know what you’re thinking. In Kirby Star Allies, by way of Kirby’s classic ability to inhale and assimilate enemies, isn’t every character your ally? Isn’t this even moreso the case with Kirby’s new ability to charm enemies by throwing hearts at them?

There’s a difference between Kirby allies and Kirby friends. Kirby friends are the equivalent of helpers — enemies you can turn into friends to use their abilities throughout the level. They’re tools. Kirby allies are moreso actual characters, intended for fans to fall in love with and pine for their cameos in new versions. Kinda like this!

Given the nature of Kirby games, the list of allies is quite similar to the list of villains. It’s normal for characters on either side of the line to swap allegiances for a short time. So you’ll forgive us if we include Meta Knight just because he’s awesome and cute. Nobody’s a full-time villain here.

The names are similarly … similar. With monikers from Lololo to Lalala to Dedede, you’d be forgiven for thinking the naming of Kirby characters fell to an executive’s three month-old child. Tsk, tsk. Nepotism.

We know there are some animal friend cameos planned from the likes of Nago, Pitch, and ChuChu. But which of these strings of repeated syllables do we hope to see in Kirby Star Allies? For that we’ll have to reach back across the franchise for our favourites.

Kirby Star Allies Meta Knight

Meta Knight

Friend or foe? You never really know. Meta Knight, leader of the meta knights (because that’s so meta), looks very much like an armoured version of Kirby. His motivations have always been mysterious, and despite breaking his mask, we’ve never seen his face.

Even when Meta Knight is fighting against Kirby though, you have to respect him. He’s nothing if not honourable, and will offer Kirby a sword to make the fight fair.

We hope to see more of this character both because he’s a fan favourite, and because we want to know more about him. His mystery is part of his charm, but throughout the series each appearance has revealed something new.

In Meta Knightmare Ultra we learned he’s on a quest to become the greatest warrior in the galaxy. In Revenge of the Meta Knight we learned he hates laziness. And in the anime, we learn that Meta Knight does take into account the greater good, which is ultimately his reason for helping Kirby.

Kirby Star Allies Chef Kawasaki

Chef Kawasaki

Racking up what must be the most appearances in the Kirby series (yes, other than Kirby, you pedantic scoundrel) is Chef Kawasaki, another villain-turned-friend.

Kawasaki is the perfect compliment to Kirby. On one hand, we have a hero who can’t stop eating. On the other, we have an ally who can’t stop cooking. Boom.

Kawasaki is also the source of one of Kirby’s most powerful abilities: Cook.

Don’t let the understated name fool you. This effectively clears the entire screen of enemies other than bosses. Due to its power, this is one of the few Copy Abilities that only gives you one use.

Kirby Star Allies has a lot of powerups just floating around mid-level, so we’re not sure the game has much use for a character that would dole out tasty treats for Kirby’s benefit. The level design itself is already quite liberally sprinkled with things for Kirby to eat.

Even if we don’t see Chef Kawasaki, it’d be great to see some continuation of the robotisation of characters, a la Mecha Kawasaki.

Kirby Star Allies Adeleine

Adeleine

The child painter who could bring her creations to life, we don’t just hope to see a Kirby Star Allies Adeleine, we hope to see more Adeleine in general.

She can be sweet and paint into reality items or creatures to help Kirby. But the last time we saw her she was possessed by Dark Matter, turning on Kirby. Adeleine as an enemy is extremely dangerous, bringing a conga line of past bosses into existence with a flick of her brush.

This is an idea that could use a lot more exploring, both thematically and in terms of gameplay. If Drawn to Life can animate whatever pixel art abominations we put together, imagine the same idea with the backing of Nintendo.

Whether or not we’re controlling her, and whether or not she’s on our side, it’s a super cool ability that deserves more screen time.

Kirby Star Allies Angie

Angie

There’s a lot of potential for newer characters from Kirby’s Epic Yarn to make a jump into more traditional 3D cartoon graphics, and we think a great candidate would be Angie. Even moreso than Prince Fluff.

This smiley angel would carry you to your teammate whenever you wished, and would save you from fatal falls — at the cost of a few beads. It’s a similar role to Lakitu in Mario Kart.

We haven’t seen any of Angie so far in the promotional material, and we probably would have if she played a major “saving Kirby’s bacon” kind of role. But this is a series that loves cameos. Anything’s possible.

We could see all or none of the above allies. But we are slowly building a list of all the friends (and their abilities) for you to assimilate in Kirby Star Allies. Check it out here.

Study Shows Black People Support Family, Friends More Than Other Groups

African Americans do not just care about their finances, they also care about the communities they live in—and the people they live around.

For African Americans, community begins with friends and family—and sometimes money. A new survey reveals that a whopping 80% of African Americans agree that community involvement is important compared to only 66% of whites.

“Throughout history, African Americans have had to rely on each other, oftentimes to survive,” said Evan Taylor, African American market director, MassMutual, in a press release. “Therefore it is not surprising that helping each other lies at the heart of their beliefs about community and finances. Although no strangers to tough economic times, sacrificing to support each other, particularly family and friends, is a huge part of black culture and community.”

Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Co. said it conducted the nationwide survey to explore the intersection of community involvement and financial well-being.

While the survey reveals that both blacks and whites are equally anxious about their current financial well-being, the differentiating factor are the views African Americans have toward financially supporting others. In spite of these financial concerns, 90% believe it is important to look out for one another. More than 60% have supported someone else in times of financial need and almost a third have been supported by someone else.

“What this shows is what people care about and the philanthropic role of finances in their lives,” said Taylor. “There is significant opportunity to adopt new attitudes, habits, and actions to strengthen personal financial health as a way to build what can be shared with the communities most important to them.”

Participants ranked family, friends, and schools as their top three when asked to define communities. Religion, children, professional networks, and towns/city or region are also important, in that order.

“This indicates there is a need for African Americans to open up dialogue with each other and their communities about the steps necessary to build strong financial foundations and create generational wealth that can help the larger community in the long-term,” Taylor added.

The survey also reveals that only 32% of African Americans share information about their finances with other people compared to 55% of whites.

12 Bridesmaid Dresses Your Friends Will Actually Wear Again

Last Saturday night, a moment of pure elation came over me. My best friend arrived for dinner wearing an oversize gray turtleneck layered over a silky silver maxi dress and sneakers. I applauded her impeccably chic outfit and inquired in that red carpet way, “Darling, who are you wearing?” Her answer brought as much pleasure to me as it did to her: “Judith, it’s my bridesmaid dress—from your wedding!”

When I got married last year, it was always my intention to give my bridesmaids dresses that they would want to wear again, even if it was just to another wedding. So I opted for versatile silky silver slip dresses (which we dressed up with cascading rhinestone earrings and shimmery shoes). And now, to see my best friend not only wearing the dress but pulling it off in cool-girl style brought me pure delight.

So, brides, if you are about to choose your bridal party’s outfits for your big day, consider the ultra-chic options below, which are elegant enough for a wedding and versatile enough to re-wear. Moreover, won’t it be satisfying when someone asks her, Darling, who are you wearing?”

100 Free Gift Ideas Your Friends Will Actually Want to Receive

The holidays get expensive fast. Checking off everyone on your list can be daunting, especially for your bank account. The average American plans to spend $ 983 on holiday gifts in 2017, according to the American Research Group.

But we’ve got an early holiday gift for you: a list of 100 free gift ideas.

You’ll probably see at least four or five items you can easily give someone you know and love — which means four or five gifts you don’t have to buy.

Ready to get started? Gifts are divided into categories, so you can easily scroll to find the type of gift you need. Or, read the whole list and find inspiration for a frugal, fun and FREE holiday season!

Food and Drink

If your kitchen isn’t well stocked, you’re going to have to buy ingredients like flour and sugar. But if you already have the supplies, you can make a lot of free gifts from what’s in your pantry.

1. Bread

Bake a delicious loaf of bread (Think banana, zucchini and chocolate chip breads.), wrap it up in some colorful plastic wrap and you’re good to go.

2. Cookies

Many people wait all year to make their favorite holiday cookies, and many families have traditional holiday recipes. Why not share your favorites with your friends?

3. Cookie Mix in a Jar

You can bake cookies, or you can give people the gift of being able to bake cookies whenever they want.

Put dry ingredients (flour, chocolate chips, etc.) into a glass jar, tape the recipe to the outside of the jar and tie on a festive ribbon.

4. Casseroles

Don’t turn up your nose at the humble casserole. Anything that gives people an excuse to eat Fritos chips smothered with cheese is a hit, in our opinion.

Give it fresh out of the oven, or prepare a frozen casserole for your recipients to heat up on one of those “no-time-to-cook” days.

5. Breakfast Burritos

While we’re on the subject of “no time to cook,” a bulk supply of handmade, frozen breakfast burritos would be very welcome in a lot of our homes!

You do the work, and your recipients will think of you every morning as they eat a healthy, delicious and fast breakfast.

6. Muesli

If breakfast burritos sound like too much work, make muesli instead.

Just fill a glass jar 3/4 full of dry, raw oats, then add nuts and dried fruit. Put a lid on the jar and shake it a few times until the muesli is well mixed. Add a festive ribbon!

7. Other Holiday Treats

We know you’re already thinking of at least one other holiday treat you could make for your friends, from sugarplums to rugelach. You don’t need our permission to make it!

8. Recipe Book

If you love baking, but don’t have enough cash for the ingredients, give people a recipe book.

Write your favorite recipes on index cards, or print your recipes out and tie the pages together with a ribbon. Want to go completely free? Make a PDF version and email it.

9. Regifted Sweets

Even if you aren’t naturally skilled in the kitchen, you can still give people a delicious holiday gift.

Take some of your holiday sweets — like the box of Ghirardelli Peppermint Bark you got at your office holiday party — and pass them along to someone else.

10. Wine

Want the easiest possible holiday gift? Put a bow on the unopened bottle of wine you have sitting in the cupboard.

From My Home to Yours

One of the easiest ways to give someone a free gift is to pass along something you already own — whether it’s the package of scented soap from your aunt or the favorite book that’s been on your shelf for a decade.

11. Regift Old Gifts

Take that thing you got last year that’s still in its box, and give it to someone else.

12. Regift This Year’s Gift

Take something you got this year and give it to someone else. We suggest scented soaps or candles.

13. Gift Card

Did your office give employees gift cards this year? Have an old gift card sitting around you haven’t spent? Pass ‘em along.

But check expiration dates and balances first. Gift cards are one present that should never arrive used.

14. Books

Give an old favorite, or wrap up the book you bought a year ago and didn’t read.

15. CD Coasters

Old CDs make great coasters, and you probably have a whole binder full of old ones collecting dust somewhere.

Group them into sets (the Weird Al collection?), add a card explaining the gift and pass them along to a friend who appreciates music and upcycling old technology.

16. CD Art

If you and a friend bonded over a band or album several years ago, dig up the CD and frame the jacket art.

17. Ornaments

If you have adult children or grandchildren, giving them treasured ornaments off your Christmas tree will make them feel special.

Plus, they’ll think of you every time they place the ornament on a branch.

18. Puzzles

People rarely do the same puzzle twice, so make sure your used puzzle has all the right pieces, and wrap it up.

19. Clothes

To get away with this type of gift, you’ll need to be a mother giving a favorite sweater to a daughter, an older sister giving a favorite T-shirt to a younger sister or a best friend passing along a treasured jacket.

20. Vintage Wear

You might know a teenager or young adult who’d love to wear the outfit you’ve been hanging onto since the early 90s.

Vintage is always in style!

21. Costume Jewelry

If you inherited a pile of costume jewelry from an older relative, share the wealth with the younger generation.

22. Family Heirloom

This is a more serious gift. Pass along the necklace or china set that’s been in the family for generations.

Make sure you give it to someone who will appreciate both its history and value.

23. Childhood Stuffed Animal

Pass along a beloved stuffed animal to make a special memory with a child or grandchild.

24. Pet Rock

Make a very special memory with a niece or nephew — pass along a beloved pet rock.

Only the coolest aunt or uncle would give out pet rocks.

25. Funky Mug

If you’re one of the people who loves collecting novelty mugs, it’s time to start distributing your collection.

Wash ‘em really well first — we don’t want to see any coffee rings or lipstick stains.

26. Collectibles

While we’re on the subject of collectibles — if you know someone who collects owls, trains or snow globes, pass along a respective item from your home.

We all have at least one snow globe in a drawer somewhere, right?

27. Storage Unit Surprise

If you have a storage unit, there’s probably at least one thing in it that you aren’t using and would make an excellent gift.

The Gift of Memory

Now that so many of our photos and videos are stored online, there’s something very special about receiving an actual photograph or home video.

Plus, these are items you probably already have in your closet — which makes them ideal free holiday gifts.

28. Old Photographs

Pass along old photographs of grandparents or great-grandparents to the younger generation.

29. Photographs From Childhood

If you’ve known a friend since childhood, slip an old photo of the two of you into a frame.

30. Old Home Video

Send everyone in the family a copy of old home video footage of children or other relatives.

31. New Home Video

Why not make a new home video this year?

Take video of your children playing the piano or singing holiday songs. Or get in front of the camera and tell the people you love how much you care about them.

32. Family Tree

If your family doesn’t have an updated family tree, put one together and send it to everyone in its branches.

33. Family History

Interview family members about their history and favorite memories.

Then put the interviews together into a book — or video!

34. Family Trivia Game

The family that plays together stays together.

Make a trivia game featuring details about your family members and play it over the holidays. It can be as simple as questions and answers on index cards or as complicated as your craft skills allow!

35. Book of Shared Memories

Give your closest friend a book of memories.

Write down as many stories and shared experiences as you can remember. Include doodles, photos and anything else you’d like to add.

You’ll give your friend a history of your friendship and a gift to truly cherish.

The Thought That Counts

When you don’t have enough cash for a real gift, give something equally thoughtful and memorable.

36. Heartfelt Letter

Tell a friend or relative how much they mean to you in a thoughtful letter.

37. Monthly Letter

Write a friend or relative a dozen thoughtful letters.

Put them in envelopes with instructions about when to open.

38. How Do I Love Thee

Begin with the famous Elizabeth Barrett Browning poem “How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.” Then count them.

39. Friendship Mad Libs

Remember the time when we went to [PLACE] but we ran out of [ITEM] and we had to [VERB] our way back home?

Give a friend a book of Mad Libs based on shared experiences — see if it sparks any memories!

40. Kid Mad Libs

Here’s another cool aunt or uncle gift.

Write up a few Mad Libs. Don’t worry too much about the story — the kids’ll fill all the blanks in with “boogers” and “farts” anyway.

41. Mixtape

The classic mixtape never gets old — especially if it’s on an actual cassette you have lying around.

42. Spotify Playlist

Don’t have a tape? Make and share a Spotify playlist instead.

43. Memory Jar

Fill a jar with strips of paper containing shared memories.

44. Inspiration Jar

Fill a jar with strips of paper containing inspirational quotes or thoughts.

45. Hopes and Dreams Jar

Give an empty jar with a bunch of blank strips of paper and tell your friend to put their hopes and dreams into the jar.

46. Change Jar

Give a kid a cute jar with some loose change inside. You might inspire them to become a future Penny Hoarder!

47. Time Together

Whether it’s an afternoon spent exploring a park or an evening spent knitting and chatting, sometimes the gift of time spent together is what really matters.

48. Binge Watch a Show

Tell your significant other (or teenager) that yes, you’ll binge watch a show with them.

You know the one. You’ll probably really like it.

49. Visit the Museum

Many museums have free days. Find out when they are and take someone special.

Something for Nothing

There are many ways to get new or nearly-new items for free. Check out this list for inspiration.

50. Buy Nothing Group

The Buy Nothing Project connects people who want to both give and receive gently used items for free.

See if there’s a Buy Nothing Group in your area, and take a look at what its members are offering. Maybe one of the free items will make a perfect gift!

51. Freecycle

Freecycle is another online group where members give away items for free. Check it out and see if there’s anything you might want.

52. Craigslist

Search Craigslist for people giving away free clothes, toys, furniture or household items. As always, watch out for scams!

If you’re in Canada, check Kijiji for free listings.

54. Ebay Classified Ads

Ebay Classified Ads might also have free items you can claim — it never hurts to check!

55. Reddit

Look at Reddit’s Barter, Recycle and Gift Card Exchange communities for free gifts.

56. Freebie Sites

Use our list of 30 online freebies for gift inspiration.

Some of the items are just utilities, but plenty would make great gifts — or you could bundle a bunch of useful stuff together for someone who’s strapped for cash.

57. Free Baby Products

If someone on your gift list is a new or expecting parent, here’s how to get free baby products.

58. Retailers Offering Free Gifts

You know the free makeup bag that comes with your cosmetics purchase? Gift it to someone else.

Retailers often offer free gifts around the holidays as an incentive to get you in the door. Buy what you want, and pass the free gift to a friend!

59. Gifts Purchased With Gift Cards

We already mentioned regifting gift cards, but what if you kept the gift card and bought five gifts with it instead?

60. Amazon Trade-In

Amazon Trade-In allows you to trade in old items for new ones.

Turn your old stuff into new gifts!

61. Pet

You can almost always find someone giving away free kittens or puppies.

Note: Make sure it’s a gift the recipient wants and the recipient is ready to handle the responsibility of caring for a pet. The kitten may be free, but pets need time, money and love.

Creative Work

Are you skilled with a pen, guitar or paintbrush? Here’s how to turn free holiday gifting into a work of art.

62. Art

Draw it, paint it, sculpt it, gift it.

63. Kid Art

If you have kids, ask them to draw or paint special pictures for their grandparents and other relatives.

64. Original Music

Record yourself performing an original song you wrote for someone you love.

65. Cover Album

Are you more of a musician than a songwriter?

Make a mixtape of you playing covers of the recipient’s favorite tunes. Or gather the whole family to sing holiday favorites.

66. Poetry

The original classic (and free) gift.

67. Audio Poetry

Record yourself reading original poetry or old favorites. (“How do I love thee…”)

68. Audiobook

Read a short story or classic text aloud.

For example, you can read Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol in just a couple of hours.

69. Audio Goodnight

Far away from grandchildren?

Make them an audio goodnight tape. Tell a story, sing a song, wish them goodnight and send your love.

70. Coloring Book

Get blank paper and a marker, and create a coloring book for a friend.

Draw pictures of items you both enjoy (e.g. pizza, Netflix) or memories you share.

71. Hand-Drawn Paper Dolls

Here’s how to draw a paper doll: Draw the body first. Then, put a sheet of paper over the body (so you can see the drawing underneath) and draw the clothes to fit.

Color the paper doll, or leave the outline for the recipient to fill in!

72. Comic Strip

Draw four panels, then add yourself and your friends enjoying a comic scenario.

73. Crossword Puzzle

Create a crossword puzzle where the majority of the clues are about the recipient.

74. Word Search

If a crossword puzzle sounds too complicated, make a word search!

The Gift of Labor

Trust us, some people will appreciate these gifts more than anything else they receive this year.

75. Handywork

Offer a friend or relative a weekend of your time to do all of their little house projects.

76. Housecleaning

Can you clean a house until it sparkles? Gift your talents.

77. Car Wash

If you have kids or teenagers who need to come up with gift ideas for aunts or uncles, have them offer car washes.

78. Massage

This free gift is classic for a reason. It’s best reserved for significant others and spouses, though.

79. Babysitting

Do you know how much a night of babysitting costs these days? This free gift is actually really, really valuable.

80. Petsitting

Give your friends peace of mind by being their designated pet sitter for a long weekend — or for every vacation they take next year.

81. Other Skills

If you know how to alter clothes, upholster furniture or wallpaper rooms, there’s a free gift idea.

The recipient has to come up with the clothing, the furniture and the wallpaper, and you provide the labor.

Holiday Crafts

Let’s end this list with a collection of holiday crafts.

As with the food and drink section, these gifts are only free if you already have the supplies — but we bet you’ll have enough to make at least one of these!

82. Soap Bubbles

Have a little dish soap and a cute container? You’re on your way to making a batch of soap bubbles.

Check out Apartment Therapy for a list of soap bubble recipes. Make circle and heart-shaped bubble wands out of pipe cleaners.

83. Play Dough

Flour, water, salt, oil and a bit of food coloring are all you need for this classic toy. PBS has the recipe.

84. Bathtub Crayons

Use grated soap and food coloring to make crayons for bathtime fun. Get Rich Slowly has instructions (#94 on the list).

Put the tea light inside and you have a gift to light up anyone’s holiday.

90. Teacup Candle

If you have a half-melted candle and a mismatched teacup, combine them into an attractive gift. Get Rich Slowly has the details (#31 on their list).

91. Scrabble Ornaments

Take your Scrabble game out of the closet and turn the tiles into handmade ornaments. Spell “peace,” “joy,” “love” or anything else you like.

I Heart Naptime has instructions.

92. Scrabble Necklace

Or, turn your old Scrabble tiles into necklaces. Jewels of sayuri has the tutorial and diys.com has 24 other ideas for fun projects using Scrabble pieces.

93. Hand Warmers

Combine scraps of fabric and uncooked rice to make hand warmers. Just pop ‘em in the microwave, then take them out and warm up those hands!

Rae Ann Kelly has a how-to guide.

94. Sweater Mittens

Turn your old sweater into new mittens! Check out Creme de la Craft to learn more.

95. Sweater Pillow

Old sweaters also transform into soft, fuzzy throw pillows. PopSugar has a no-sewing-required guide.

Take a look at DIY Network’s guide — and if you don’t have pillow batting at hand, use an old throw pillow’s batting!

97. T-Shirt Quilt

If you have a bunch of old T-shirts and an old fleece blanket, stitch them together into a new T-shirt quilt.

Use Wellness Mama’s guide — unlike other T-shirt quilt guides, this one doesn’t require extra batting or material.

98. Sock Monkey

Our lip scrub recipe only requires sugar and olive oil.

100. Bath Bombs

Whip up a batch of homemade bath bombs with ingredients you might already have around the house. (If not, you can whip up this batch for less than $ 10.)

Our video tutorial shows you how.

The 29-year-old model announced she was expecting her second child with her artist husband James Conran on Instagram last week to the delight of her fans and she has now revealed she even told some of her nearest and dearest the same way.
She told the New York Post’s Page Six column: “It is easier announcing my pregnancy on social media instead of calling people – but on the other hand some friends and family members want to make sure you call them and get that respect of being called first. There are haters out there, so you either shut them down or remove them from out of your life.”
Coco announced her pregnancy by posting a video on Instagram of herself standing in a nursery wearing a full-length, fitted, black evening dress and holding her stomach and standing next to her daughter Ioni Conran.
Two-year-old Ioni then jumps out from behind her and shouts: “Surprise! There’s a baby in mummy’s tummy!”
Coco captioned the video: “Your attention please! @ioniconran has a very important announcement to make!! #babyconran2. (sic)”
Coco had recently admitted she is a lot more selective about the modelling jobs she takes on now she is a mother.
She said: “Now that I’m a mom, when it comes to campaigns and editorials, I look at the bigger story. I ask if that’s a good fit for the Coco brand, should I work with every editorial that comes my way, every brand. It’s about pinpointing what’s good … I didn’t want to be consumed by my career. Now we have a baby girl and that’s what grounds me. I travel as much as I can with my family. My hair and make-up team are people that I absolutely love, who make me laugh. We’re not curing cancer. We’re going to do our jobs, doing it well, and realise we can have fun.”

Avoid these 5 types of mom friends who steal your joy

by

BabyCenter Guest Blogger

posted in Life

By Bree Najera

I was terrified as I arrived at the door of the first playgroup I ever attended as a new mom. I pictured myself sitting on the couch, covered in baby spit-up, talking loudly about diaper brands over the shrieks of unruly toddlers running in circles around me. Wasn’t I made for more than this? I thought to myself.

When I entered the house, there was definitely some chaos. But, I found that the terrible image I’d created in my mind was perhaps exaggerated. In fact, it was quite nice to see other moms and to discuss the issues we all were facing. While I personally prefer one-on-one playdates more than a group, I’ve come to appreciate how indispensable my mom friends are.

They encourage me. They support me. They pick me up when I literally can’t stand. There’s nothing like them– and I’m so grateful.

However, like any kind of friendship, I’ve learned to be a little more discerning when choosing my mom friends. I’ve come to realize that they really do have the power to make or break me.

Here are 5 Types of Mom Friends To Avoid:

(By the way, these are general categories of people; I’m not talking specifically about anyone in particular. Deep breath– I’m not writing about you! 🙂 )

1. The ‘You Just Wait’ Type of Friend

This is the friend that loves to deliver the impending doom that is upon you.

You: “My son slept through the night for the first time!”
Friend: “That’s good, but you just wait til those teeth come in; you’ll never sleep again.”

You: “My kid is doing so great in 3rd grade!”
Friend: “That’s good. You just wait until 5th grade though. All the kids are a nightmare at that age.”

Have you experienced this?

You don’t need this in your life, mama.

I’m tempted to be this way at certain times, particularly with brand new moms. It’s hard when you see what’s ahead and feel a gossipy or even genuine need to tell them what to brace themselves for ahead. But the truth is, it’s not helpful to anyone to say it! If you know someone who does this occasionally, don’t worry about it. But if your friend does this at every turn, then repeat after me: “I’m sorry, but I have plans that day.”

2. The ‘My Kid’s the Best’ Type of Mom

We all think our kid is the best, but there’s an unspoken “mom code” that you aren’t allowed to say that to other moms.

It’s a great thing to celebrate your child’s accomplishments with other moms. But if you are friends with someone who insists on “one-upping you” with their kid at every turn, it might be time to say ‘adios.’

3. The ‘No Discipline’ Type of Mom

Another “no-no” on my list are moms who don’t discipline. I’m not talking about moms who have difficult children or are having an “off day.” I’m talking about the mom that NEVER addresses their child’s behavior or makes excuses for their child, even when it’s interfering or hurting mine.

4. The Gossipy Type of Mom

Gossip is a struggle for most people (myself included). However, if you’re friends with a frequent gossiper, you will become a frequent gossiper. I know this from experience. Avoid these friendships!

5. The “My Husband’s the Worst” Type of Mom

Have you ever met people who are always talking bad about their husbands? It’s hard to watch– regardless of whether or not it’s true.

In my life, my close mom friends are one of the best resources I have to help process my marriage and ask for guidance. Being honest is different than bashing.

All of this to say– none of us are perfect. We all fall into these traps or behaviors at some point. But if your friends are constantly modeling these behaviors, it will steal your joy. I guarantee it.

I want to encourage you– when you are looking for inner circle people– those ones who are in your heart and your days–choose carefully! Look for women of integrity who will challenge you to be a better person, wife and mother.

I’m a 33-year old mom with a passion for lattes, toys that don’t make noise and bubble baths. Although I battle daily with chronic Lyme Disease, it is my passion to find joy in life– through faith, fun and a healthy dose of sarcasm. My super awesome husband and stinkin’ cute 2-year old help me through the ups-and-downs of life with a chronic illness. Although I’m unable to work, for now, my background is in elementary education. I’m passionate about integrating my knowledge from the classroom into my daily life as a mom.

How Bob Menendez’s friends helped him steer clear of jail

‘Gifts to cultivate friendship are not bribes,” Abbe Lowell said in his closing in defense of Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez — and enough jurors agreed to result in a hung jury and a mistrial. The Biz Markie defense — he’s just a friend — worked. Lowell was worth every penny of the $ 4.5 million raised…

Joe Jonas’ Friends & Family ‘Thrilled’ About Engagement to Sophie Turner: ‘She Was Just the One’

The Jonas Brothers — and wives.

Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner are engaged, and the singer’s family couldn’t be more welcoming to their new addition. “Everybody’s very, very happy for them and their family and friends are all thrilled. Everyone loves them together,” a source tells PEOPLE of the exciting news.

Adds the insider, “She’s young but is beyond her years and is crazy, crazy mature. He’s never been like this with a girl.”

“He was such a dater before her but their relationship was much different from the start. She was just the one for him.”

The couple shared the happy news with corresponding Instagram posts on Sunday. They each posted an image of the Game of Thrones star with her hand on top of the singer’s, showing off the stunning engagement ring against their black clothes.

“I said yes,” Turner, 21, captioned the photo. Meanwhile, the 28-year-old singer wrote, “She said yes.”

The DNCE frontman’s brothers, Nick and Kevin Jonas, were among the first to congratulate the couple.

“YES!!!” Nick wrote, while Kevin similarly chimed in with, “Yeah!!!!!!!”

Nick, 25, then shared the photo of the ring on his own Twitter page to further congratulate the couple. “Ahh! Congratulations to my brother… and sister in law to be on your engagement,” he said. “I love you both so much.”

Jonas and Turner have been dating since last November, after they were spotted acting cozy at a concert in the Netherlands — although the duo didn’t become Instagram official until January.

Since then, the couple has been going steady — they even share an adorable Siberian Husky puppy together named Porky Basquiat — and were recently snapped sharing some sweet PDA while out and about in Los Angeles.

As PEOPLE exclusively reported in June, a source close to the musician said that Sophie is “different from the other girls has dated.”

The couple have kept fairly tight-lipped about their romance. “I’m in a relationship, but it’s a very private relationship,” Turner told the U.K.’s Sunday Times in July.

“I very much isolated myself for a while and forgot what was fun. Going out with friends, going out to eat, not really having a care,” she told the publication. “And people I’ve met recently in my life have drawn me out of that.”

She continued, “It really helps you own those insecurities. The things I tortured myself about before, I can forget about.”

According to the British starlet, she’s in a much more positive place in life than she was before. “I’m happier than I’ve been in a very long time,” she said.

Turner also opened up to InStyle this past spring about her high-profile relationship. “I found it easier to date someone who understands the industry or is in that world,” she said.

Jennifer Aniston has revealed the lipstick Rachel Green wore in Friends

And here’s where to buy it…

Friends may have left our screens over 12 years ago but us millennials still want to be Rachel Green more than anything.

During the series, we all tried desperately to look like Jennifer Aniston, whether it involved wearing her 90s wardrobe, going for a neutral make up palette or following her varied hair trends, mimicking her look over the 10 seasons.

Too many of us opted for ‘The Rachel’ bob, before realising that it’s actually quite a hard look to pull off. We’ve all felt that hair regret.

While 12 years may have passed since Friends graced our screens, Jennifer Aniston just reignited our teenage dreams, revealing how to actually get Rachel Green’s look.

In a recent interview with Glamour, the 48-year-old actress revealed the lipstick brand and shade she used to perfect her trademark Rachel Green look over the series.

The answer? Paramount by MAC.

‘They’re always sort of regurgitating trends,’ she explained in the interview, offering, ‘How about MAC’s Paramount lipstick? It was a browny brick. I remember that was my go-to colour when I was doing Friends.’

So not only do we now know Rachel Green’s beauty secrets, we can also actually get our hands on it, with Paramount by MAC still sold across the world.

While discussing the revival of 90s looks, Jennifer Aniston also spoke about the 90s trend that she hopes won’t return – tiny sunglasses.

‘I just think they’re ridiculous,’ she explained. ‘I’m not a fan of those little tiny spectacles. I’m a fan of classic sunglasses. That was very ’90s, wasn’t it? When you would see those little tiny frames, those were brought back from the John Lennon days.’

We’ll just stick to the lipstick then.

Friends who swipe together, stick together: How my best friend helps me navigate online dating

Friends who swipe together, stick together: How my best friend helps me navigate online dating

Friends who swipe together, stick together: How my best friend helps me navigate online dating

I sat on our hand-me-down couch as Sarah, my roommate and best friend, sat across from me, chanting, “Do it! Do it!” repetitively — she was encouraging me to download a dating app. I had heard horror stories about dating apps, but I’d also witnessed long lasting relationships grow from them. Her positivity and excitement convinced me to press “Install,” and I waited for it to download onto my screen.

I hit the gas pedal by downloading the app, but Sarah jumped into the driver’s seat full throttle, creating my account and profile for me. Sarah had already been on the app for a while before I joined the rest of the singles in my generation, so she was extremely qualified to be my guide for this online dating journey. She began by explaining the basics: how to match with guys, where to change my settings about what I’m looking for in a match, and most importantly, what photos to pick and what my bio should say. I felt extremely grateful that my guide was also my best friend. She knew all my good characteristics, and had no problem sharing them for me.

Sarah curated my profile to perfection, picking a range of photos: travel shots, full body pictures, a close-up selfie, and — of course — a photo of the two of us. She wrote a bio that was perfectly witty, short, and sweet. The reasoning for the ‘’less is more bio,” she said, was to leave the personal questions for when I start chatting with my matches.

Her expertise, coupled with our strong friendship, meant that my profile reflected me authentically — something I know I would have been too nervous to do on my own.

The first real connection I made on the app was with a boy named Brent. He was sweet, positive, and the perfect person for me to meet as someone new to online dating. He messaged me every morning, took me out for ice cream on our first date, and complimented me often, which I started getting comfortable with. During the time I was talking to Brent, Sarah matched with a guy, too. Our two matches were extremely different, but Sarah and I bonded over the similar situation. Both relationships lasted for a short amount of time, ending for various reasons — but Sarah and I grew closer as we both navigated these connections that had started virtually.

I thought this journey would be solely about finding love on a dating app — but in reality, the experience has also strengthened my friendship with Sarah.

Among the married and coupled-up friends surrounding us, we are single. And I have found that online dating can be extremely positive in a lot of ways, and negative in many others. Sarah has been there for me every time I’ve been unmatched, every time I’ve come home from an awkward date — and she’s been there for me during the ultimate dating downer: getting dumped.

Lauren Hedenkamp, friend
Lauren Hedenkamp/HelloGiggles

During this process of going on dates, messaging guys, and swiping among hundreds of dudes, I have read countless kinds of bios — some witty and cute, others empty or boring, some just purely entertaining, some offensive:

“Looking for a friend that likes to get eaten out. Midwest raised, desert living for less than a year. Gym Regular,” “White rapper. Too busy for you. Message me if you like orange juice in your tequila and it doesn’t burn when you pee.”

I usually send these kinds of bios to Sarah and we have a good laugh, but every so often, I start feeling down. Then, I can’t help but think of that Sex and the City episode where Miranda says she fears that men who are still single at their age are bad guys, and it’s just Darwinism weeding them out. When that episode creeps into my brain and I start questioning the entire online dating world — including the bad bios and guys that won’t commit — Sarah always brings me back from my self-destructive thought process.

Now, I understand that each online connection with a new guy is helping me grow, helping me learn what I desire in a relationship — but in reality, dating isn’t glamorous.

It has been exciting, and awkward, and, often times, heart breaking. Having my best friend by my side while online dating helps me feel less crazy. The bad or awkward moments can become funny stories to share with each other. Whenever I’m sad about dating, Sarah helps me remember not to give up on love. From the funny fuckboy memes that we text each other, to pre-date pep talks, to post-breakup therapy sessions, our friendship is why I’ve survived the non-glamorous parts.

I downloaded an online dating app to find love; I am still searching for that. But what I do know is that I’m not alone. I have a good friend by my side, walking a similar journey in the world of online dating. I feel stronger knowing that she is my cheerleader, encouraging me to maintain my standards and convictions as I try to find love among all of the unsolicited dick pics sent my way.

Your Coworkers Are Not Your Friends

I recently had a conversation with a young woman whom I mentor who was very disappointed in a colleague’s behavior. The two, in my mentee’s words, “enjoy a good relationship and are friendly toward one another.” The two were also recently working jointly on a project. My mentee was coordinating with an outside vendor and the colleague was managing the project with a senior level executive internally.

Apparently both had casually agreed on their roles as the ground work was being done. When it came time to execute the project, the colleague called the outside vendor (my mentee’s contact) secured the deal and then promptly wrapped up the assignment with the senior level executive. Her reasoning: It was late (6:30pm on a Monday) and my mentee had already left for the day. The colleague didn’t want to disturb her evening. I’m not a sports person, but I believe that’s what they call an intercepted play — or as my mentee saw it, a foul.

My mentee was angry for a number of reasons: At her company there are no off hours. Everyone has a BlackBerry and so even if you don’t want to disturb someone with a phone call, texting and e-mail are always appropriate for matters concerning urgent business or communication etiquette.

The other breach was in their perceived friendship. But I firmly reminded my mentee that there are no friends at work! Sure, there are folks with whom you go to lunch, share jokes, and exchange birthday and holiday greetings. There may even be colleagues with whom you share family information (children’s graduations, parent anniversaries, etc.) You may have even invited them to your wedding.

But as Renetta McCann, former CEO of advertising giant Starcom MediaVest, reminded me in an interview, in a competitive work environment “a friend today is a foe tomorrow.” The goal for most individuals at work is advancement. How do you achieve that? It’s increasing your visibility, gaining the right exposure and being noticed by the right players inside and outside of your organization. Of course, there are perfectly legitimate and integrity-based strategies for achieving those goals. But for some, it’s accomplished by any means necessary.

Some of these people are quite obvious in behavior. Others you discover in your interaction with them. Will they disappoint you? Certainly! Should you be surprised? Never! Does this mean you should be guarded and paranoid in your place of work? Not at all. You should, however, be clear and deliberate about all your actions and interactions at work. As for my mentee’s colleague — now she knows how her colleague operates. One of my favorite quotes from Maya Angelou is, “When people reveal themselves, believe them.” Here are some guidelines for managing relationships on the job:

You may love your job and all the people you work with, but at the end of the day you are in a business environment where the goals of the organization are driven by business decisions.

It is absolutely necessary to build and develop relationships at work. This is not a social exercise. There will be people that you genuinely enjoy and like and colleagues with whom you will develop genuine friendships–that will happen effortlessly. But the goal of building workplace relationships is to accomplish your professional and business goals. Even if you don’t feel this way, know that your colleagues do.

Clearly outline goals and objectives in writing. Instead of verbal discussions, document through e-mails.

Stop getting emotional. If someone has disappointed you, take it as a gift. Now you know how they think and how they operate. Your job now is to be smarter about how you interact with them.

Always act with integrity — even if you feel others with whom you have a relationship don’t.
