Giant ‘Plant from Hell’ sends 17-year-old to the hospital with third-degree burns

giant hogweed

The Giant Hogweed is a terrible, no-good, dangerous plant. It also happens to be spreading across the United States with shocking speed, and just touching can totally mess you up. A 17-year-old boy from Virginia named Alex Childress learned that in the absolute worst way possible, and now he’s dealing with severe burns and likely a lifetime of significant scarring.

Childress was reportedly doing a bit of summer gardening when he came across one of the large plants and promptly chopped it down, unknowingly getting some of the plant’s dangerous sap on one side of his face as well as his arm. Nothing happened at first — that’s what makes the plant so incredibly brutal — but that would change.

A Giant Statue of Soccer Legend Diego Maradona Is Getting Attention for Its Questionable Appearance

A 12-foot-high statue of soccer legend Diego Maradona has become the latest dodgy depiction of a player to provoke online ridicule.

The 57-year-old Argentine unveiled the bronze likeness at a charity event in Kolkata, India on Monday. The statue was supposed to feature a 25-year-old Maradona, sporting curly locks, and clutching the World Cup trophy he captained his country to in 1986, ESPN reports.

Judging by the online reaction, however, there is little likeness to Maradona. Twitter users have suggested the statue more closely resembles basketball Hall-of-Famer Larry Bird, ex-England soccer manager Roy Hodgson, Welsh soul singer Shirley Bassey, or “someone’s gran.”

The statue’s dubious likeness to its subject has drawn comparisons to a questionable bronze bust of Real Madrid star Christiano Ronaldo, which had to be reworked earlier this year after fierce criticism.

Last year, a bronze statue of late actress Lucille Ball was replaced in New York after a viral campaign to remove the original, dubbed “Scary Lucy.”

Maradona, who has credited divine intervention for his famous “Hand of God” goal in the 1986 World Cup, showed a distinct lack of hubris at the unveiling. “I am not god of football but a simple footballer,” he told the gathered crowd via an interpreter. “I’m happy to be here in Kolkata again. It’s amazing to have my statue here.”

45 Great Moments in Black Business – No. 37: Black Ad Agency Slays A Madison Avenue Giant

Over 45 days, Black Enterprise shares 45 milestone events among the nation’s largest black-owned businesses that have had widespread impact on black economic development and American industry across four decades. This is in tribute to the 45th anniversary of Black Enterprise’s iconic BE 100s yearly list of the largest black-owned companies.

Today we reveal No. 37 in the web series “Great Moments in Black Business.”

1993: UniWorld Group, one of the largest black ad agencies, slays advertising leviathan Saatchi & Saatchi to win the Burger King general-market account.

It was a whopper of presentation.

Burger King, the perennial No. 2 burger chain, was not prepared to lose another market share battle in the Burger Wars against McDonald’s. After firing quite a few lead advertising agencies in the 1980s and early 1990s for their inability to develop consistent, sustainable marketing messages, the fast food giant’s honchos called Byron Lewis, president and CEO of UniWorld Group Inc., one of the nation’s largest African American ad agencies, to tell him that his firm had a shot to head Burger King’s national interim campaign while it searched for a full-time agency.

(Image: Black Enterprise Magazine)

Having It Their Way With Burger King

UniWorld had successfully handled Burger King’s marketing targeted to the African American community since 1983. Now, some 10 years later, Lewis was told that he and his creative crew would not automatically gain the assignment but would be pitted against the massive global media behemoth Saatchi & Saatchi. Although Lewis knew UniWorld wasn’t in the running for the top advertising spot on a permanent basis that fact didn’t deter the daring entrepreneur from fully embracing the challenge and pushing his agency to the max.

As he recounted in my book, BLACK ENTERPRISE Titans of the BE 100s: Black CEOs who Redefined and Conquered American Business, of the contest: He became personally involved, pulling in his best people. Together, they worked around the clock, conjuring up slogans and reviewing scores of storyboards. Within weeks. Lewis & Co. struck pay dirt with the new tag line: “We may not be No. 1, it just tastes that way.”

That line and their presentation more than satiated the competitive appetite of Burger King’s top management. It won UniWorld the $ 170 million account—the largest general market campaign ever awarded to an African American firm–and in the process, the firm char-broiled a Madison Avenue giant.

Between 1993 and 1994, UniWorld worked at a feverish pace on the campaign, pumping out more than 50 commercials. As a result, the Home of the Whopper took a chomp out of the Big Mac, sustaining its first ever sales increase over a six-month period to more than 13% over the previous year. Although the firm would not gain accolades from the advertising trade press, it was clear that UniWorld was the only firm at the time capable of resuscitating Burger King’s flagging sales and torched reputation.

“We Proved That We Could Compete”

Despite UniWorld’s inability to gain the general market account on a permanent basis, the firm once again demonstrated its talent, experience, and inventiveness. “We proved that we could compete with mainstream agencies and be successful,” Lewis told BE of this major barrier-breaking milestone for African American agencies.

(Image: Black Enterprise Magazine)

Black advertising agencies have been succeeding against the odds since BE revealed its first ranking of the nation’s largest African American-owned advertising agencies in 1973—a roster of 15 firms that recorded total billings of $ 31.4 million versus $ 13.6 billion for the total industry.

In 1998, BE would re-introduce the adverting agencies list with 20 companies generating $ 798 million in billings versus $ 187. 5 billion in total marketing spend. By 2016, the last year that we compiled the list, the ranks—now measured by revenues—had dwindled to eight. Throughout our 45-year history, only two black agencies had appeared on all of BE‘s measurements of black firms: Chicago-based Burrell Communications and UniWorld.

Black-Owned Advertising Firms Denied Access

Throughout four decades, black agencies have been largely denied access to lucrative general market accounts and during much of the 1970s and 1980s designated to crafting messages for the burgeoning black consumer market. But the tide turned: As these firms sold white advertisers on the potential and power of African American consumers, experts like Ken Smikle’s  Target Market News maintained, majority corporations increasingly used to white agencies. “The mainstream agencies started competing for the budgets that black advertising agencies had developed without safeguarding any of our territory,” Lewis said in an interview for the Titans book. “So it was clear that the competitive threat to UniWorld would not only come from other established black agencies but also mainstream firms.”

By the 1990s and turn of the century, large, majority firms started urban consumer-focused boutiques as well as merged and partnered with African American companies, including BE 100s ad agencies: Publicis took a 49% stake in Burrell in 1999 and eventually UniWorld sold 49% to WPP Group plc as part of a strategic alliance. Today’s African American firms contend with the most direct threat to its future, the abandonment of target marketing altogether for the so-called “total market” approach.

UniWorld Breaks Barriers

Since Lewis launched UniWorld in 1969 with $ 250,000 in funds from two venture capital firms, he had been nimble and adaptable from the start. He buoyed the firm by targeting the entertainment industry in the early days, developing marketing campaigns for the black action film, Shaft and its sequel, and creating an urban radio soap opera, Sounds of the City, sponsored by Quaker Oats.

(Image: Black Enterprise Magazine)

He also focused on political programming, striking a joint venture with then-BE 100s radio broadcaster National Black Network to air the 1976 Democratic and GOP conventions, securing AT&T as a sponsor as a means for the telecommunications company to gain access to “influential and affluent African Americans.” That radio broadcast would serve as the precursor for America’s Black Forum, a nationally syndicated television program he started in 1984, airing in 70 markets over two decades with advertising from Burger King and Ford Motor Co.

Lewis’ message of market share protection through deeper penetration of African American and Latino markets resonated with white advertisers in the 1980s. His accounts grew to include long-term clients such as Kodak, Bank of America, Colgate Palmolive, Motorola, Pepsi, and Microsoft. The firm had come a long way: When UniWorld first appeared on the BE Advertising Agencies list in 1973, its billings were $ 3.5 million. By the time, it was named Advertising Agency of the Year in 2000, the accounts expanded to 18 major corporations and billings grew to $ 230 million.

The Burger King account had become one of UniWorld’s defining moments though. That milestone led to a full-fledged general market account. In 1995, M&M/Mars, the mammoth candy manufacturer, awarded UniWorld the $ 11 million 3 Musketeers candy bar campaign. Although it was a mainstream effort, UniWorld brought its multicultural sensibilities to marketing the product. The campaign featured comedienne Fran Drescher, star of then-hit sitcom The Nanny, three swordsmen and the slogan, “Big on chocolate, not on fat.” Since the candy bar was a hit among ethnic consumers, UniWorld’s creative team included an African American actor to play one of the foil-carrying characters.

For UniWorld, the campaign, among the largest ever awarded an ethnic agency, was sweet. Due to such achievements, UniWorld—and Lewis, a 2013 Advertising Hall of Fame inductee for leading an ethnic agency that gained some of the largest mainstream accounts —today receives its due.

See the below interview with Byron Lewis when he was awarded the AG Gaston Lifetime Achievement Award:

Mom farts in yoga class, giant hole opens in earth to swallow her

by

Michelle Stein

posted in Parenting

Moms know all too well how pregnancy and childbirth can transform our bodies into something almost unrecognizable. Saggy skin, stretch marks, separated muscles and overall redistributed proportions are among the “prizes” of motherhood. Not to mention the leakiness, whether it’s breast milk, pee or gas.

So maybe that’s why one mom’s now-viral Facebook post is so darn relatable. Mum of two Laura Mazza detailed the hilariously embarrassing experience she had at her very first yoga class. Two words: Uncontrollable farting. Yes, really.

Mazza began her post by explaining she has muscle separation in her abdominal wall as a result of pregnancy. In an attempt to help strengthen her core, she signed up for a yoga class. She was feeling a little nervous going in as a rookie, but started gaining confidence after jumping into a few positions.

“We move into the downward facing dog… and that’s when I started to feel my guts,” Mazza wrote. “Now for the past few weeks I have had IBS Symptoms like something crazy. My farts stink like something mixed between a rotten egg and an incineration plant. And somewhere between the dolphin position and the three legged dog two of those burning garbage eggs slip out and I fart. I farted. I farted at yoga. I’m a walking cliche. My pelvic floor has failed me.”

downward dog yoga

Thankfully — or so she thought — her quiet farts seemed to have gone undetected. That is, until she moved into a position where her head was between her legs and the stench punched her in the nose. Despite her embarrassment, Mazza managed to collect herself. (Everyone farts, after all. Right?) She sucked in her core and proceeded with the yoga positions.

“We then go down on this position where we stretch right out but our legs are like a frog on the floor. The teacher then came around and pushed everyone down lower… I thought oh good, gonna get a nice crack in my back again. I hold in my butthole nice and tight to make sure no farts escape again. She comes over… pushes my back down… And buuuuuuuuuurrppppfffffff The loudest trumpet comes out of my ass.”

yoga

What followed was pure horror. And hilarity.

“I froze and thought oh my god. Oh my god. OH MY GOD. Sweet baby Jesus. What just happened. I’m dreaming. Surely. I’m in a nightmare,” Mazza wrote. “My face flushes red and I have tears in my eyes from the embarrassment. I got up, attempted to roll up my yoga mat but couldn’t do it, so I just kinda chucked it to the side.. and grabbed my shoes and socks and my bag all in my arms and basically bolted out the door. I turn around just as I’m closing the door And look up embarrassed to see everyone on their knees wide eyed staring at me in shock… (or in an awake coma from the smell.) And guru ashram yoga teacher looks at me, bows her head and joins her hands together and says ‘namaste’ And I think nah I’m a go, and I run out the door and now I’m sitting at McDonald’s eating a sundae crying and laughing. Sorry physio. I’m never ever ever EVER, doing yoga again. F(***) the muscle separation.”

farting yoga mom

Now that I’ve finished changing my underwear after laughing so hard, I just want to say, I LOVE THIS MOM. And I can so relate. My body has done a lot of weird crap since incubating/delivering three kids: Involuntary farting and queefing, peeing during sneezing and laughing fits, random milk letdown. Honestly, I’d bet my first yoga experience would go down similarly — except I would be too embarrassed to share it with the world. However, I’m so thankful this gassy mama did decide to share her yoga fail with us.

Namaste.

What do you think of this mom’s story? What’s your most embarrassing experience involving an unintentional bodily function?

This Crafty Husband Built A Giant Advent Calendar For His Wife By Hand

One crafty husband just raised the bar for spouses everywhere this holiday season.

At the beginning of December, Benjamin Hewins, who lives outside of London with his family, spent two days freezing his butt off while he constructed a 7.5-foot-tall advent calendar with presents behind every window for his wife Zyleen.

Benjamin told The Huffington Post that ever since they started dating, Zyleen has put lots of thought and love into the gifts she’s given him. Now it was his turn to return the favor.

“I came up with the idea about two years ago when in the month of December, Zyleen would leave me a present every day on my drawer,” he said. “So that when I left work at 5 a.m. I would have something to open. It was just the most touching thing and every day I’d open my eyes before my alarm went off just filled with excitement. I felt like a little kid.”

Bundled up in long johns, Benjamin, who is a gas engineer by trade, got to work creating the giant advent calendar.

“I’m no carpenter at all, however I know how to cut wood and screw some screws,” he said. “It was more just using my imagination and being a bit creative. I didn’t really have a clear plan to start off with, I just started and kept going.”

When he revealed the finished product to Zyleen, she was blown away by the gesture.

“She was so emotional and overwhelmed,” Benjamin told HuffPost. “I love that look in her face because I’m constantly trying to think of something to surprise her with and I’m glad she really had no clue and was overcome with happiness.”

Inside the wooden structure were 25 presents. So far, Zyleen has unwrapped shoes, her favorite chocolates, skincare products, a watch and cable clips to keep her chargers neat. Another item was an envelope with a question mark on it that reads, “It’s a day out with the kids and I, make sure you are wearing comfortable clothes.” Benjamin said he will reveal the rest of the surprise in 2017.

The Hewins tied the knot in 2009. In 2003, they met for the first time at a nightclub, which has since become a department store.

“We went back a few years ago and had a dance in the utensil section around the same spot where we had first met,” he said. “All the shoppers quite rightfully thought we were mad!”

Though the Hewins share a solid, happy marriage, their relationship was at one time frowned upon by some people in their circle. Benjamin is Catholic, Zyleen is Muslim. The couple practices both faiths.

“People around didn’t really consent to this, but they didn’t understand what a special relationship we knew we had,” he said. “We knew that if we understood what each other wants and built our relationship on trust and communication then we would be unbreakable. She comes to church with me and I attend her important religious days.”

After thirteen years together, the couple, now parents to two kids, are still best friends.

“I do really hope that when I’m 70 and have dodgy knees, I’ll still be in the garage tinkering around with old coat hangers or used tuna cans to make her something special for Valentine’s Day,” Benjamin said. “She’s a great woman and deserves all the happiness she gets.”

7 Steps to Create Giant Success and Live a Fulfilled Life in the Process

2015-06-11-1434014278-9895737-ScreenShot20150611at11.17.36AM.png

NASA experts use what is called “the chain of events” to understand the root causes of failures. In this chain, a cause creates an effect that becomes the cause of a new effect and so on until the failure occurs. If multiple events can connect and lead to a failure, the opposite is true as well. There is a series of mental events that lead to massive success. Each event is the cause for another event. How can you apply this thinking to create authentic success, meaning and fulfillment in your life? Here’s the countdown:

Step 6
The final outcome that we want in our lives is to have great results. Nobody works for several years with the hope that maybe one day, if everything falls perfectly into place and if he’s lucky enough he will fail. We all want results and success as the final effect. What is the cause of this effect?

Step 5
Success is ensured through steady growth, exponential thinking, smart work, commitment and continuous learning. Overnight success usually requires many years of work. Nothing worthwhile is created quickly. What allows you to invest a lot of time and effort, to learn, to research and work hard until your dream becomes real?

Step 4
The mental forces that allow you to continue learning, working and growing are inspiration, drive and motivation. Educational systems are constantly looking for new ways to motivate their students to learn various disciplines; organizations are investing millions of dollars in motivational programs for their employees. These approaches create only a momentary spike of motivation that rapidly goes away with the stimulus. Neither are sustainable because they lack the rock solid inner personal foundation.

Step 3
The only way to trigger sustainable motivation, drive and inspiration is to live your life with a sense of purpose. When you make the decision to trust your heart, to live your values and to honor your passion, you will find purpose. If you don’t live your values, if you ignore your passion and if you don’t honor the intelligence of your heart, you will be empty and most likely experience a lot of emotional pain. You cannot create an inner conflict between the mind and the heart, you cannot lie to yourself about who you are, about your dreams and expect to live a fulfilled life.

Step 2
The most straightforward and probably the only authentic way to find a sense of purpose is to put your life in the honest perspective. Honesty is critical.

Step 1
You put your life in the honest (and correct) perspective by living the truth and by fully embracing reality. What is the most uncomfortable reality we all need to face in our lives?

“I will show you fear in a handful of dust”
– T.S. Eliot

Our time here on Earth is limited. The desert fathers in the remote monasteries of Egypt, the Greek orthodox monks on Mount Athos or the ancient shamans in Central America understood that death is the wisest and most reliable guide we have in life.

Without sadness or worry, you must fully embrace the fact that you don’t have time to doubt yourself, to live in self-pity, to postpone your dreams, to delay your life. You simply don’t have time for a meaningless, empty existence. Without the awareness of our limited time on Earth, everything around us is trivial and ordinary.

“All you have to do is write one true sentence.
Write the truest sentence that you know”
– Ernest Hemingway, Nobel Prize Laureate

Honesty without judgment is the secret door to peace and fulfillment, so think and feel the answer to these questions:

1. If your life ended in this moment, would you be fulfilled with how you have lived and what you have accomplished so far?

2. Would you be able to honestly say you have lived an authentic life?

3. What regrets do you have in life?

4. How can you live from now on without continuing to accumulate more and more regrets?

Leave a comment and tell me. We’re in this together.

For hundreds of years humanity has tried to answer the question – “is there life after death?” For the first time in your life you now must honestly answer the question:
Do you really have a life before death?

Your friend,
Dr. Dragos

PS: Go do something extraordinary. Because it’s never the extraordinary people who do the extraordinary. It’s the ordinary people like you and me, who get up off their knees and decide to take the journey. Because they complete the journey, ordinary people become extraordinary.

Japanese Shipping Company Advertises With … Giant Pettable Cat Head??

A Japanese shipping company is doing some strange things to convince consumers it’s the cat’s meow.

On Tuesday, Kuroneko Yamato — or Black Cat Yamato — installed a a giant billboard that is nothing but a humongous cat’s face at Tokyo’s Shibuya Station, according to Kotaku.com

The giant black cat face features plush, pettable fur, a nose with actual nostril holes big enough to fit a human han, and giant eyes that stare right through you, WTFark reports.

Although the billboard is attracting lots of selfies, it will be a while before w know if it increases business.

Kuroneko Yamato is no stranger to bizarre branding techniques.

Last July, Kuroneko Yamato started making employees wear pawprint gloves as a way to advertise that any parcels delivered by the company would be handled as delicately as a mother cat handles its own child, RocketNews24.com reports.
