Omarosa Tells NPR She Heard Trump ‘N-Word Tape,’ Contradicting Her Own Tell-All Book

Omarosa’s book isn’t even on shelves yet and she’s already out here contradicting herself.

In an interview with NPR, Omarosa claimed she heard — with her own ears — Donald Trump use the N-word on the set of ‘The Apprentice.’

In her book, Unhinged, she says the opposite.

via NPR:

“Hearing it changed everything for me,” former White House aide Omarosa Manigault Newman told NPR on Friday.

Manigault Newman was referring to what she calls the “N-word tape” — a long-rumored but never surfaced tape of Donald Trump on the set of The Apprentice allegedly using the racial slur.

In her interview with NPR’s Rachel Martin, Manigault Newman claims to have heard the tape and heard Trump using that slur on the tape.

But that’s not what it says in her tell-all book, Unhinged, due out on Tuesday.

When asked by Martin about the discrepancy during the interview, Manigault Newman insisted Martin must not have read the book (she had) and pointed to a section at the very end of it.

But in that section, Manigault Newman doesn’t actually describe hearing the tape. She writes of calling one of her “sources” who had a lead on the “N-word tape.”

“Incredibly, this person – who shall remain nameless – picked up the phone.

We spoke.

On this phone conversation, I was told exactly what Donald Trump said – yes, the N-word and others in a classic Trump-goes-nuclear rant – and when he’d said them.

During production he was miked, and there is definitely an audio track.

For over a year I’d been so afraid of hearing the specifics from someone who’d been in the room. Hearing the truth freed me from that fear. And only now that it’s gone, do I realize just how heavy it’s been.”

During the interview with Martin, Manigault Newman read the section aloud, then insisted it described her hearing the tape rather than what the words on the page state, which is that she heard an account of what was on the tape. “I heard the tape,” she said when pressed.

Her search for the N-word tape is a core piece of the narrative Manigault Newman weaves in Unhinged, a memoir that covers her time on the reality TV program The Apprentice that starred the future president, then the 2016 Trump campaign and the White House. This discrepancy in her account of hearing the tape may cast doubt on other claims in the book, many of which are explosive.

In Unhinged, Manigault Newman writes as both a Trump world insider, overjoyed at his election, and as a voice of the liberal resistance airing concerns about his rhetoric, policies and mental state.

At this point someone needs to get their hands on those tapes and release them. We doubt it’ll change anything, but at least we’ll know the truth.

Why You Must Let Your Voice Be Heard On Trump’s Supreme Court Replacement

The most recent action involving the Supreme Court that’s expected to impact the nation for a generation or more has not been the result of a major decision but rather a resignation.

On Wednesday, Justice Anthony Kennedy announced that he would step down from the nation’s high court—a move that presents President Trump with the opportunity to ideologically remake the bench by solidifying a predictably conservative majority to rule on a range of issues critical to American life.

Why should you be concerned?

The effect on the legal landscape will be seismic. it will affect every case that comes before the court—from immigration status and reproductive rights to workplace inclusion and voting rights—for decades to come. It’s evident from the response to this development that it serves as a political windfall for Republicans as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell immediately stated that the GOP “will vote to confirm Justice Kennedy’s successor” in advance of the midterms, making the declaration even before Trump has reviewed a possible replacement.

A Reagan appointee who served for 30 years, Kennedy was considered a swing vote on a number of key cases. For example, he disappointed archconservatives for positions that tended to place him closer to the center. For example, he wrote the ruling that legalized same-sex marriage in 2015, joined opposing justices against the death penalty in 2005 and was among those who upheld Roe v. Wade in 1992. However, don’t overlook the fact that he sided with conservative justices on the court’s 14 most recent decisions.

Judging by his lower court selections, Trump will most certainly pick a hardline conservative to fill the vacancy and join Chief Justice Roberts, Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, and Neil Gorsuch, the president’s first appointment to the Supreme Court. As observers have noted Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Stephen Breyer, both consistent liberals on the court, are 85 and 79, respectively, and potentially represent near-term successor opportunities for the administration to significantly diminish any progressive dissent within chambers.

Justifiably, progressives view the scenario as a means to erode the current civil rights agenda as well as a judicial fiat of the continuation of Trump’s largely unchecked presidential authority. As we commemorate the 150th anniversary of the 14th amendment, which guarantees all citizens “equal protection under the law” and has served as the basis for landmark Supreme Court decisions to ensure basic rights, one only has to look to the Supreme Court decisions this month to realize the further rollback of rights that will leave all Americans unprotected, especially people of color. In this month alone, the high court’s current conservative-leaning configuration engaged in a series of restrictive rulings that included allowing Ohio to employ aggressive policies to purge voting rolls and open the door for other states to impose similar measures; validation of the redrawing of electoral maps in Texas and North Carolina that critics argue will serve to discriminate against minority voters; weakening public sector labor unions and, in turn, disproportionately hurting large numbers of black workers when it deemed unconstitutional a requirement for non-union workers to pay collective bargaining fees; and permitting the Trump administration to continue its anti-Muslim travel ban that limits entry from seven countries including Iran, North Korea, Syria, Libya, Yemen, Somalia, and Venezuela.

So what can you do?

NAACP Legal Defense Fund President and Director-Counsel Sherrilyn A. Ifill provides an answer.

In a statement, Ifill cited that Kennedy proved to be “an important moderating force on issues ranging from LGBT rights to abortion and affirmative action” whose presence on the Court will be missed. She further asserted that “we can have no confidence that President Trump will present a nominee with a record of commitment to racial equality and justice. And so every American must invest themselves in ensuring that Congress does its job—which in this case, means not considering any nominee this year, and voting down any nominee who does not represent the ideals of our democracy or is otherwise unqualified to serve on the highest court in our nation.”

To ensure that the Senate engages in its “advise and consent” power to ensure Kennedy’s successor will “uphold the rule of law and equal rights for all Americans” she advocates that you contact U.S. Senators and demand that the incoming Senate—those for whom Americans will vote for in the midterms—gain the opportunity to vote for the confirmation of the next Supreme Court justice.

I agree that we cannot sit on the sidelines. We must take action. It will not be easy but we must constantly prod our representatives and make our voices heard.

To take a chapter from history, in 1987, Reagan nominated Robert Bork, considered an “ideological extremist” replacement for Lewis F. Powell Jr., another retiring, swing-voting justice. The nomination of Bork, who was considered unqualified and had derided judicial redress to racial discrimination as being “wrong,” ignited a firestorm of protest among civil rights organizations, women’s groups, and students, among others, as well as full-throated condemnations from Democrats and other progressive politicians. The result was that the nomination was rejected in committee, political support had evaporated and the confirmation was ultimately scuttled.

The replacement nominee for the Supreme Court: Justice Anthony Kennedy.

Tony Awards 2018: The Best Black Actress You Never Heard Of Is Up for a Tony

Seconds after this year’s Tony Award nominations were announced, director Kenny Leon’s phone started blowing up. Lauren Ridloff, the star of Broadway’s revival of Children of a Lesser God, was officially in the race for Best Lead Actress in a Play.

While the announcement may have come as a surprise to some—including Ridloff herself—it only validated what the play’s Tony Award-winning director knew all along.

“I am over the moon excited about it,” Leon said in a phone interview the next day, recalling that the texts flew between them for an hour and a half. “She was surprised! I wasn’t surprised, because she gave one of the most vivid and unforgettable performances on Broadway I’ve ever seen.”

The backstory of Ridloff’s road to the most coveted nomination a stage actor can get is great fodder for its own fairytale script with Leon, who won a Tony for directing the 2014 revival of A Raisin in the Sun, playing a leading role.

Tony Awards

(Twitter)

Begin with the fact that Ridloff is 40 years old, deaf since birth and, when Leon discovered her, she wasn’t an actress at all. She was an at-home mom and former kindergarten teacher whom he hired to tutor him in American Sign Language (ASL). As Leon mulled the idea of reviving the 1979 play about a deaf woman who refused to read lips or speak, he was soon intent on hiring Ridloff in a broader role, as a consultant if the play launched. She would be able to keep the story true to the deaf experience. Ultimately, he asked her to star in the show.

Ridloff was game from the start. Although she has rarely even seen a play (stage productions rarely accommodate the needs of deaf people), she identified with the the script’s main character, Sarah Norman.

Like Sarah, Ridloff decided at age 13 that she would not speak. Through an interpreter, Ridloff told The Interval, a theater website, that it was an act of self-preservation.

Small, bookish, biracial, and mainstreamed in a school where almost everyone else could hear, “I felt there was enough oddness about me,” she recalled. “I didn’t want to face any bullying. I didn’t want to face strange gazes from other people. I didn’t want to be judged based on my voice because that was not a reflection of my intelligence or my personality or who I was.”

It is a testament to Leon’s vision and courage that he cast Ridloff, a woman of color, in a role that had previously only been played by white women (remember Marlee Matlin in the 1986 film?). “I thought it was a given that Sarah was a white deaf woman,” Ridloff told Variety magazine. “So, it was a big surprise to find out that Sarah is now a woman of color, and I’m so proud to present that new Sarah to the world.”

It is a testament to Ridloff’s talent and courage that she agreed to take it on, all the way to the big lights (and brutal critics) of Broadway. The risks have paid off.

“She keeps saying I opened the door, but it’s not about me,” says Leon, arguably one of today’s most sought after and respected directors. “She is a fierce, courageous woman who wants to change what people think about deaf people. She is a gifted artist who wants to be a part of changing the world. With this performance, she’s already doing that.” The Tony Awards will air June 10 on CBS.

Full disclosure: I saw this play on opening night, and could not take my eyes off of Ridloff—not only because she signs throughout the entire play, but because she is one of the most expressive people I’ve ever seen. Physically small, she has massive presence as she literally embodies her role, communicating with her eyes, her face, her posture and entire being in a way that rings clear and true.

In an age when much is made of the need for women to raise their voices and speak their truths, in opting to withhold her spoken voice as a teenager, Ridloff found her true one, and in Children of a Lesser God , everyone hears her, loud and clear.

R. Kelly Apologizes to Fans Amid #MuteRKelly Campaign: ‘I’ve Never Heard of a Show Being Canceled Because of Rumors’ [Video]

R. Kelly’s scheduled performance in Chicago on May 5 for the UIC Pavilion’s Pre-Mother’s Day Love Jam has been cancelled — thanks in part to the #MuteRKelly campaign.

On Sunday, R. Kelly took to social media to apologize to his fans for the cancellation.

“First of all, I want to apologize to all of my fans in Chicago, and basically all around the world wherever I’m performing at and they canceled me,” he said. “I don’t know why they canceled the show. I never heard of a show being canceled because of rumors, but I guess there’s a first time for everything. So I apologize to you guys and in the meantime, I’m going to try to get to the bottom line of it, you know, as far as my lawyers are concerned, and see exactly what happened and why I was canceled.”

The May 5 show would’ve been his first in Chicago since the ‘sex cult’ allegations were published last July.

A petition signed by 1,300 students at the University of Illinois in Chicago called for the cancellation of R. Kelly’s concert on May 5, citing “overwhelming public evidence of [Kelly’s] history of sexual misconduct.” The letter, co-written by Natalie Bennett of the Women’s Leadership and Resource Center at UIC, was to be sent to UIC Chancellor Michael Amiridis upon reaching 1,500 signatures.

With Time’s Up joining the #MuteRKelly campaign, we expect several (if not all) of R. Kelly’s shows to be cancelled in the coming weeks.

BBC Radio 4 host heard mocking gender pay gap in leaked recording

“Oh dear God. She’s actually suggested that you should lose money.”

REX

By Amy Lewis

A leaked recording of BBC Radio 4 Today host John Humphrys joking about the gender pay gap with a fellow male BBC editor has reportedly left management ‘unimpressed’.

During the off-air conversation, which is thought to have been recorded earlier this week ahead of Monday’s show, John Humphrys is heard making light of the pay inequality that’s said to be rife at the BBC, and is also heard making quips about former BBC China editor Carrie Gracie.

Gracie made headlines last weekend after announcing her decision to resign from her post at the broadcaster, after discovering that she was being paid significantly less than her male counterparts.

In an open letter posted on her website, Gracie writes: “My name is Carrie Gracie and I have been a BBC journalist for three decades. With great regret, I have left my post as China editor to speak out publicly on a crisis of trust at the BBC.

“The BBC belongs to you, the licence fee payer. I believe you have a right to know that it is breaking equality law and resisting pressure for a fair and transparent pay structure.

“In thirty years at the BBC, I have never sought to make myself the story and never publicly criticised the organisation I love. I am not asking for more money. I believe I am very well paid already – especially as someone working for a publicly funded organisation. I simply want the BBC to abide by the law and value men and women equally.”

Carrie Gracie has resigned from her role as BBC China editor over pay inequality Credit: REX

Seemingly not taking the issues at the heart of Gracie’s resignation seriously, Humphrys is heard criticising her directly in his conversation with BBC North America editor Jon Sopel. Both men are among the organisation’s top-earners.

According to a transcript published by The Sun, Humphrys says to Sopel: “Slight change of subject, the first question will be how much of your salary you are prepared to hand over to Carrie Gracie to keep her, and then a few comments about your other colleagues, you know, like our Middle East editor [Jeremy Bowen] and the other men who are earning too much.”

Sopel replies: “I mean, obviously if we are talking about the scope for the greatest redistribution I’ll have to come back and say well yes Mr Humphrys, but …”

To which Humphrys adds: “And I could save you the trouble as I could volunteer that I’ve handed over already more than you f***ing earn, but I’m still left with more than anybody else and that seems to me to be entirely just – something like that would do it?”

Humphrys then goes on to take aim at Gracie, and presumably her letter, saying: “Oh dear God. She’s actually suggested that you should lose money – you know that don’t you? You’ve read the thing properly have you?

“And the idea is that I’m not allowed to talk to her about it throughout the whole course of the programme. Not a word.”

While a BBC source has reportedly admitted that ‘management are deeply unimpressed’, an official spokesperson stated:

“This was an ill-advised off-air conversation which the presenter regrets. The BBC is committed to getting its pay structures right.”

The Sun reports that Humphrys himself has dismissed the conversation as ‘just silly banter between old mates,’ which in the current climate, might sound like an all-too familiar defense for many… #LockerRoomTalk

Have you ever heard of the Hebrides?

When you’re looking at places in Europe to visit, there is something for everyone. You might want golden beaches and marble hotels. Or, you might prefer to enjoy some stunning hills, valleys, mountains, castles, snow, and the ocean. If this sounds up your street, then Scotland is definitely the sort of place you need to visit. Now, you might not know this, but there’s a special place in Scotland called the Hebrides.

Ever heard the name? No? Well, in actual fact, there are two – the Inner Hebrides and the Outer Hebrides. This Scottish archipelago is one of the most stunning places in the world, and certainly the most majestic place you’ve never heard of. It’s incredibly remote, lying off the west coast of mainland Scotland, and is accessible only by land or sea. Let’s find out a little more about the Hebrides, shall we?

History

The Hebrides have a long and fascinating history, dating back to Mesolithic times! There is also a big Norse and Celtic link here too, and these cultures have had a big impact on the people of the Hebrides. It has led to a great deal of diversity throughout both the Inner and Outer Hebrides, which is reflected in the naming of some of the islands and towns, not to mention the languages spoken. There is also a big source of Scottish Gaelic literature and music to be found in the Hebrides, making it an important part of Scotland’s culture.

There’s some great archaeology

As we mentioned before, the Hebrides has a rich and intriguing history, and archaeology plays a big role in this as well. This has led to there being a whole host of archaeological wonders here to appeal to people of all ages. Perhaps the most famous are the world-renowned Callanish Stones – think of them like the Hebridean equivalent of Stonehenge. These are definitely a must-see if you get the chance to visit. There is also the Clachan Bridge, known as the Bridge Over the Atlantic because it bridges the Clachan Sound, and connects the mainland of Scotland to islands.

It’s stunning

One of the biggest draws of the Hebrides is the fact that it is just simply stunning. The geography and climate contribute to what makes this the perfect place to visit. If you want to enjoy breathtaking natural beauty, a trip to the Hebrides will give you exactly what you crave. There are amazing caves, stunning ocean views, lush fields, majestic cliffs, and archaeological wonders. The scenery and surroundings here are simply breathtaking, and it’s a much more laid-back pace of life. In fact, this might even be the kind of place you decide you want to move to and live some day.

So, this is the last time you’re going to be able to say you haven’t heard of the Hebrides. Now you’re familiar with this collection of islands off the coast of Scotland, you’ll understand its cultural and historical heritage and significance. The next time you’re planning a trip to Scotland, make sure you take some time out to go visit the Hebrides.

The Strength of Knit Knowledge: CamberI’ve heard vintage pickers…

The Strength of Knit Knowledge: Camber

I’ve heard vintage pickers speak wistfully of how easy it was to find weird, cool American sportswear all over the place a couple of decades ago; when dusty hunting and sporting goods stores had shelves of deadstock gold and small-town thrifts were overflowing with Levis redlines. And the boxcars were all empty and the sun shined every day, right?

There may not be a lot of secret, un-picked sporting good stores left in the United States but there’s still a few companies making the sort of stuff you’d want to find there; Stan Ray, for example, for fatigues and work pants; L.C. King, for chore coats, etc.–less accessible but no less sought after is Pennsylvania’s Camber label, which specializes in heavyweight knit cotton garments for work and sports.

I really enjoyed the Wall Street Journal’s recent piece comparing gray hooded sweatshirts, a wardrobe staple if there ever was one. But they seemed to be aiming for a streamlined fit that, although I appreciate it, doesn’t have the same vibe as a solid vintage American sweatshirt like a Camber or Champion reverse weave, classic elements of the casual American look Derek wrote about awhile back. Alas, Champion’s current stuff, while decent, isn’t quite up to the standards of the extra beef of their 80s classics. (Side note, the Todd Snyder stuff endorsed by the WSJ is in fact excellent.)

While I favor Camber’s pullover or zip hoodies, they also make heavyweight pocket tshirts and extra heavy, waffle-knit-lined sweats that really qualify as outerwear. Most pieces come in familiar, collegiate colors of gray, pine, burgundy, navy, and black, plus bright orange and, in some garments, hi-visibility for work purposes. Camber gear is also cut pretty big; while something like a Buzz Rickson sweatshirt is liable to run small and trim, current Camber runs roomy.

image

Camber doesn’t sell direct to consumers, and in fact a lot of the Camber you might see in the wild is private label. Camber has been the label-under-the-label for a lot of streetwear brands for years, including Bape offshoot Very Ape, Futura-labeled stuff, and, rumor has it, Engineered Garments Workaday (look for a made-in-USA vs made-in-Canada label). Some private label stuff is, of course, fit- and detail- adjusted–I’ve handled basic Camber blanks and some of those other labels and they’re not identical, although the basic build is consistent.

image

You can buy Camber stuff online from All USA Clothing or All Seasons Uniforms–prices are terrific but unfortunately those sites claim to have month-plus lead times. Dave’s New York has carried them but seems out right now. One of our favorite vintage shops, Wooden Sleepers, recently had a bunch of shop crewnecks and hoodies printed on Camber sweats (one of which I bought, which prompted this post). You can always search Etsy and Ebay, which often have some new and vintage models (keep an eye on those shipping time disclaimers for new pieces). Rakuten is an option as well, as Camber has a good reputation in Japan.

Amber Heard and Elon Musk Step Out in L.A.: ‘It’s Definitely Not a Casual Relationship,’ Says Source

After spending some family time with Elon Musk in his native Australia, Amber Heard and the tech mogul were spotted together back in Los Angeles over the weekend.

The couple, who had spent time together Down Under last month while Heard, 31, filmed Aquaman, had lunch at Sweet Butter in Los Angeles on Friday. “They were very casual and dined in,” an onlooker tells PEOPLE. “Elon had his arm around Amber as they waited in line.”

The eyewitness adds, “They ordered at the counter and sat down outside to wait for their salads. Elon paid and was pretty chatty. It was his first time at the restaurant so he asked questions about the menu. They were both very friendly and seemed happy.”

Dating rumors began swirling last year when Heard and Musk, 45, were spotted out together several times amid their respective divorces — Heard’s contentious divorce from Johnny Depp was finalized in January, and Musk filed for divorce from his second wife, Westworld actress Talulah Riley, in January 2015.

From Coinage: See Where 6 Stars Were Before They Were Famous

“They are getting more serious,” says a source close to the couple. “It’s definitely not a casual relationship. That’s not Elon. He doesn’t do anything casually.”

The source confirms that the Tesla founder “isn’t dating anyone else” and “is still very fascinated by Amber and loves her company. He seems very happy with her. She is spending a lot of time with his kids.”

While working in Australia, Heard spent a day sightseeing with Musk’s five sons. The actress shared a few snaps from the day out, showing the group goofing off together at the Sydney Opera House. Musk’s sons — Damian, Kai, Saxon, Xavier, Griffin — are from his marriage to his first wife, Justine. (The couple had another son, Nevada, who died at 10 weeks.)

The billionaire also shared photos from the day on his own Instagram account. In one snap, Musk is seen with his arm around Heard as one of his sons shows the couple something on his phone.

Never Heard Of ‘Dry Drowning?’ What You Need To Know About The Deadly Condition

The Question: Dry drowning was recently ruled as the suspected cause of death for a 4-year-old boy from Texas. What is this medical condition and what are the signs that someone might be suffering from it?

The Answer: We don’t yet know what happened in the tragic case of the child in Texas, but drowning is an issue of heightened concern in the summer.

About 3,500 people die per year in the U.S. due to unintentional drowning. One in five of those deaths is a child under the age of 14. And there’s a large disparity by race: African-American children between the ages of 5-19 are 5.5 times as likely to drown in swimming pools than their white peers.

But to understand any of the terminology about drowning ― and it is confusing ― it’s important to understand what happens when someone drowns.

“Wet drowning,” which is drowning while submerged under water, is what most people think of when they hear the word “drowning.” This refers to when a spasm in the larynx ― a muscular organ in the throat  ― occurs and relaxes the opening to the throat’s airway, allowing water to enter the lungs.

In the event of dry drowning, on the other hand, a laryngeal spasm also occurs, but the muscle at the top of the airway doesn’t completely relax, and so less water enters the lungs, according to Dr. Wassam Rahman, medical director of the emergency center at Johns Hopkin’s All Children’s Hospital.

There’s no clinical difference in the outcome of wet versus dry, Rahman says. In both cases, without medical intervention, death is quick: The laryngeal spasm makes it hard to breathe and oxygen is cut off from the brain. Usually an autopsy determines if a death was wet or dry ― and one can quickly die in a body of water, or shortly after getting out of it, by dry drowning.

But there’s an additional danger with dry drowning ― it could lead to “secondary drowning,” a deadly and hard to spot condition if you don’t know what to look for.

“Suppose a child ducks their head and chokes on some water and is fine,” Rahman told HuffPost. “Then within 24 hours he starts to have some respiratory symptoms ― [secondary drowning] is a delayed [reaction].”

During secondary drowning, a little bit of water gets inside the lungs from say, a near-drowning experience or even something as seemingly benign as being tossed around by waves.

The only difference with secondary drowning is that in the hours following, the lungs respond to the trapped water by swelling, essentially starting to pool with the body’s own water, Rahman explained. Ultimately, the fluid in the lungs makes it hard for the body to produce oxygen. Oxygen blood levels eventually drop, which can cause a slowed heart rate and, in rare cases, cardiac arrest.

If a child develops a cough a couple of hours after swimming or submersion, or cannot catch his or her breath, something might be wrong, according to Rahman.

Chest pain, vomiting, irritability or a drop in energy in the hours after swallowing a large amount of water can also be signs of secondary drowning, according to the American Osteopathic Association.

If you see any of these signs, get medical attention immediately since patient outcome gets worse with the progression of time, Rahman notes.

And watch your kiddos when they’re in the pool or ocean: Drowning is the second most common cause of death by unintentional injury, behind car accidents, among children ages 1-4 years-old, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

For every child that dies from drowning, another five go to the emergency room for nonfatal submersion injuries, according to the CDC. Nonfatal drowning injuries can cause severe brain damage, including long-term learning disabilities, memory impairment and the loss of basic cognitive function.

Some of the top factors that influence drowning risk are lack of swimming ability, a lack of barriers, such as a pool fence, to prevent unsupervised water access and a lack of close supervision while swimming, according to the CDC.

You can never have too many eyes on kids when they’re playing in the water. And learning CPR is a great skill. Seconds count: The more quickly CPR is started on a drowning victim, the better the chance their outcome will improve.
