Ten Great Sneakers for Spring

The weather is starting to heat up again in California, reminding me it’s almost time for camp collar shirts and washed denim jeans. Every time spring rolls around, I think about picking up a new pair of sneakers. While I love traditional welted footwear, sometimes sneakers go better with casual clothes than leather shoes of any stripe.

If you’re looking to expand your sneaker wardrobe a bit, here are a few I’ve been eyeing. Some are on the expensive side (such as the Vors), while others are reasonably priced around $ 100 or so. From mainstream lines to niche labels, here are ten great sneakers for spring.

image

Spalwart Marathon Trail Low ($ 159+): In the 1970s, shortly after Japan fell in love with Ivy Style, people in Japan noticed American college students were no longer wearing neckties with tweed jackets to classes. Instead, many were repurposing outdoor brands such as Sierra Designs and Eddie Bauer into their everyday attire. Certainly, the oxford-cloth button-down remained popular, but instead of hook-vent sport coats and striped rep neckwear, students were wearing 60/ 40 parkas, Levi’s jeans, and Champion sweatshirts.

The look has been described as Rugged Ivy, and if you gravitate towards that sort of thing, you’ll love Spalwart’s Marathon Trail Lows. They take after classic running shoes from that era, but give them a funkier style with a treaded outsole. They’re a bit flimsy in terms of construction, but still durable and supremely comfortable – especially on hot days. You can find them on sale right now at End.

image

Vor 2B Mid-Tops ($ 415): Vor’s sneakers are painfully expensive, although not out-of-line with top-tier brands such as Common Projects. That said, I love these mid-top basketball shoes. They’re a bit better made than your average pair of Air Force 1s, while still having that casual style that looks good with nearly anything short of tailored clothing. You can wear these with jeans and fatigues, topcoats and field jackets. They’d also look great with washed denim and a sweatshirt. The company also has basketball-styled low-tops

Nike Air Max 97 Silver Bullets (~$ 200): Before everyone was all about chunky sneakers, Nike’s Air Max 97 sat on shelves forever because its inflated silhouette. Now it seems downright conservative next to Balenciaga’s Triple S. The design of the AM97 was inspired by Japanese bullet trains and the ribbed lines give the shoes an almost futuristic look. I think they look great under olive fatigues or shorts. You can find them floating around StockX for about $ 200 (StockX is an online trading site for hard-to-find shoes. They connect buyers and sellers directly, but also authenticate sneakers before shipping to make sure you’re not getting fakes).

image

Doek Oxford ($ 170): Last year’s coming-of-age drama, Call Me By Your Name, is full of the kind of summer-style that has made brands such as Ralph Lauren famous. Loosely cut oxford shirts, simple chinos, and pique cotton polos. The shorts are … pretty short … and shirts are often unbuttoned low. The looks are simple, slightly preppy, and easy to adopt. If you take after that kind of thing, check out Doak’s balmoral-style tennis shoes, which are made from a hefty cotton canvas and vulcanized outsole. They’re on the expensive side of things (Vans and Superga are affordable alternatives), but they look a bit better than your average pair of kicks. Just spray them with Scotchgard before wearing so they’re protected from stains.

image

Novesta Marathon ($ 195): There’s never been a wider range of sneakers inspired by classic ‘70s and ‘80s running shoes. Even luxury brands such as Tom Ford, Loro Piana, and Tod’s are getting on the look (and none of them are as good as the non-lux versions). Novesta is the in-house label for a Slovakian factory that’s historically done private label manufacturing for other companies. And like many factories, they’ve developed their own brand in order to sell directly to customers. In the last few years, they’ve done two collaborations with Comme des Garcons and gotten picked up by some leading menswear boutiques. I like their Marathon runners, which are a bit more conservatively styled than the Spalwarts mentioned above. For an affordable alternative, check Greats

image

Vans Anaheim Slip-Ons ($ 75): Truth be told, I almost always just end up wearing my Engineered Garments x Vans slip-ons every spring – mostly out of sheer laziness since they’re so easy to put on. Their mismatched uppers make them look a bit more interesting than Vans’ regular slip-ons (although those are great too). The only downside is that they’re hard to find and only available through Nepenthes when available. For something similar, check out these sueded Anaheim or hairy suede slip-ons. The fact that the uppers aren’t mismatched like the EG version means you won’t spend half your summer explaining that, no, you didn’t accidentally walk out the house this way. And yes, this is the fashion now. Ughhh, mom.

Standard & Strange x TSPR Hi-Tops ($ 175): Chuck Taylors are some of my all-time favorite sneakers, but they’re … everywhere. For something slightly more unique, but still classically styled, I like these canvas high-tops from Standard & Strange. They’re made in Japan from densely woven canvas uppers and vulcanized rubber soles. And I think they’d look great with workwear. A good substitute for work boots in the summer when it’s too hot to wear heavy footwear, but also rugged enough to go with raw denim jeans. They kind of remind me of a Nigel Cabourn collaboration with Converse a few years back, which I sadly missed out on.

image
image

Adidas Army Shoes ($ 105): If German Army Trainers (or GATs for short) seem new but familiar, that’s because the two brothers who invented them would later go on to launch Adidas and Puma – two classic sneaker companies that often make shoes bearing a familial resemblance to GATs. German soldiers also used to wear these to the gym in the 1970s, which is how the style got its name. We’ve long endorsed the originals, but they’re hard to find and require you to go through a proxy service (try searching Grailed). Last year, however, Adidas came out with their version. A lot easier to buy.

Nike Air Max 180 ($ 130): Pete mentioned these a few weeks ago, and I’m just co-signing. They look absolutely great. These Tide Pod looking joints were originally released in the early ‘90s, and with the decade’s revival in full swing, they feel fresh again (see what I did there?). I like how the playful colorway goes with washed denim and sweatshirts, or with darker jeans and topcoats come fall. Delicious looking.

Drake’s Gym Classics ($ 215): I love Drake’s for their ability to always put a new spin on classic style, but in a way that feels tasteful. These classic gym shoes were made in Japan and feature a hefty rubber toe cap. A bit like Jack Purcells, but better looking. Like some of the other options on this list, these sneakers have a vulcanized rubber sole. That means the soles are glued to the uppers with a wrapped piece of rubber tape, then baked in a kiln like pottery. This seals the sole, tape, and uppers together. Not necessarily exclusive technology to this Japanese factory, but cool.

In Chengdu, finding peace in parks and heat in cuisine

Traveling on a budget is not the easiest of tasks, especially when there are so many tempting treats to be eaten, resisting the urge can sometimes be an ask that’s just too much. We are human after all and need a bit of grub every now and then. Visiting China is not cheap, like most traveling experiences the cost of your flight wipes out most of your budget. One city that will accommodate a modest budget is Chengdu. Serving as the capital of the Sichuan region, it is one of the most densely populated cities in China.

What is there to do?

We recommend visiting the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, because with such a catchy name, who wouldn’t want to visit? You probably noticed that we just mentioned the word panda, so there’s that too. China is not famed for treating its animals well, but the animals do seem to be healthy, and, importantly, happy here. Costing 58 yuan, there is no excuse not to check this place out – that converts to less than $ 10. Amazingly they have a nursery, where the baby pandas live, so you just have to go and feast your eyes on the little guys. Chengdu is often overlooked by backpackers for more famous locations such as Beijing and Shanghai despite it having a vibrant culture with a rich history. There are numerous temples and museums, even boasting a classic car museum for any driving enthusiasts. If you find yourself overwhelmed by the hustle and bustle and need a break, then check out one of the many parks, which are used as places for contemplation and relaxation. Something a little unusual is on offer in the parks, ear cleaning. Yeah, people wander around the parks offering to clean your ears, maybe to allow you to hear the sound of silence more clearly in the tranquil parks.

How to get around the place

Traveling around the city is not a problem as they have a clean and well-organized subway network, the high-speed trains zoom you underneath the streets with military timing. Usually, a single trip will cost you less than a dollar, so there will not be a huge expense racked up when getting around. You can grab a taxi with ease, but because it is not overcrowded, it can be pleasant just to stroll around the city, soaking it all in at your own pace.

Getting a bite to eat is easy

Chengdu has amazing food to offer tourists and locals alike. Head to the tourist area of Jinli Street, which provides a vast array of edible treats, including squid skewers and rice cakes. Don’t restrict yourself to the tourist attractions though, head to some of Chengdu’s markets to experience the local street food. The city is known for its spicy food, so be warned that you may face some discomfort after eating the dishes on offer, best to take it slow and not eat everything in sight until you know you can handle it.

The hotels in Chengdu are reasonably priced, and the airport is close enough to the center that you can get off the plane and head straight into the city if you’re feeling energetic. Prices per night average between $ 40 – $ 70 so you may need to shop around to find a cheap deal. Ultimately Chengdu is cheap to get around and eat in, with many walks and temples to keep you busy for the duration of your stay.

'Solo: A Star Wars Story' Influences Include 'Heat' and 'The Big Lebowski'

The original Star Wars is a mashup of influences from sci-fi serials and samurai movies, so it makes sense that other installments of the franchise would also take a lot of inspiration from other classic films. That's the case with the upcoming Solo: A Star Wars Story, which goes back before the events of the first movie to show the early adventures of Han Solo, Chewbacca and Lando Calrissian.

Using Solar to Heat Your Home

The sun is one of the most reliable sources of warmth on the Earth, so why not use it for your home heating? Solar-powered heaters take the comfort and convenience of conventional heating and combine it with energy-efficient solar energy for an interior heat source that’s as great for your energy bills as it is for that cold spot in your bedroom.

If you’re thinking about converting your existing heating system with a solar heat source, there are a couple different paths to get there. You can supplement your conventional forced air system with a solar space heater, or connect a solar collector or hot water storage tank to a radiant floor system, baseboard heaters or even a forced air unit. Here’s a brief rundown of all the most popular methods.

solar-space-heater

Portable Solar Air Heaters

Solar Infra Systems is the most respected names in solar heater tech. In fact, they make one of the few—if not the only—commercially available portable solar air heaters out there. And you can purchase these units at retailers like Walmart and Home Depot! They offer three residential units, one free-standing portable model and two window-mounted units.

Each heater pulls in cold air from the interior of the room at the bottom of the unit, runs it across the sun-heated solar collectors, and pushes it out near the top of the unit. The warm air is forced through a connected duct, which you can move around the room to place it in the most convenient spot.

column radiator

Radiant Floor Heating

Solar makes the perfect heat source for installed radiant floor heating. Typically, in these kinds of setups, a solar heated storage tank is connected to the radiant system to pump heated liquid through the pipes embedded in the radiant flooring. There’s often a gas, electric or oil backup for particularly cold days. These systems work well in areas that have a high potential for solar activity—especially in homes that already have a radiant system in place.

Retrofitting your existing floors with a subfloor heating system can be pretty intrusive since it requires ripping out your existing floors and subfloors and replacing them with new concrete slab flooring. And it’s fairly costly—expect to spend between $ 9,000 to $ 22,000 on average for a 1,500 square foot home. But it’s undoubtedly one of the most comfortable and quietest heating systems around.

Radiant Floor Heating

Hot Water Baseboards or Radiators

That doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy the benefits—financial and otherwise—of solar-powered heating unless you have radiant heating installed in your home. Hot-water baseboards and radiators offer a less invasive alternative to radiant floor heating.

These are usually connected to flat plate collectors, similar to a solar hot water heating system. The baseboards or radiators have a larger surface area than conventional electric heaters so they can hold more heat. Most homeowners choose to connect them to a backup heat source for colder weather.

Solar-Connected Forced Air Systems

It is possible to connect a liquid solar heating system to a forced air system, though it will take a little work. Mainly, you need to install a liquid-to-air heat exchanger or heating coil in the return duct before it reaches the furnace. Air cycled through the duct will be heated as it passes over the solar-warmed liquid in the coil, then blown out into the rooms of your home.

The heating coil itself is fairly inexpensive—you can pick one up for a couple hundred dollars or so. But you’ll probably want to hire a professional HVAC technician to place the exchanger in your return duct, which can drive up the cost a little bit.

However, supporting your heating unit with a 100% free heat source will make a big difference in your energy bills, even if it’s only supplementing a conventional heating unit. And that’s a great reason to get on board with solar heating!

Jill Scott To Turn Up The Heat As Lady Eve In CW’s ‘Black Lightning’

Critically acclaimed actress and four-time GRAMMY Award-winning singer Jill Scott will turn up the heat as she joins the cast of The CW’s upcoming drama “Black Lightning,” the new series from Warner Bros. Television and based on DC characters, debuting in midseason 2018.

Known for her sensual smooth voice, tantalizing lyrics and spoken word poetry, Scott will play Lady Eve, a DC villain who can be traced back to the Kobra Cult in comic lore.

Instagram Photo

In “Black Lightning,” Lady Eve will be the bridge between Tobias Whale (Marvin “Krondon” Jones III) and a secret group of corrupt leaders. Always a consummate professional, Lady Eve presents herself in Freeland as the owner of a funeral parlor, but quickly becomes an adversary to Black Lightning.

Regarding the casting, showrunner and executive producer Salim Akil said:

“Jill is an amazing artist who can embody any character and give them an authentic voice that is both nuanced and richly complex. I am excited to see her in the role of Lady Eve.”

“Black Lightning” stars Cress Williams as Jefferson Pierce, a man wrestling with a secret. As the father of two daughters and principal of a charter high school that also serves as a safe haven for young people in a neighborhood overrun by gang violence, he is a hero to his community. Nine years ago, Pierce was a hero of a different sort. Gifted with the superhuman power to harness and control electricity, he used those powers to keep his hometown streets safe as the masked vigilante Black Lightning. Almost a decade later, Pierce’s crime-fighting days are long behind him…or so he thought. But with crime and corruption spreading like wildfire, and those he cares about in the crosshairs of the menacing local gang The One Hundred, Black Lightning returns — to save not only his family, but also the soul of his community.

Based on the characters from DC, “Black Lightning” is from Berlanti Productions and Akil Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television, with executive producers Greg Berlanti (Arrow, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, The Flash, Supergirl), Salim Akil & Mara Brock Akil (Being Mary Jane, The Game, Jumping the Broom, Girlfriends) and Sarah Schechter (Arrow, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, The Flash, Supergirl). The Black Lightning character was created by Tony Isabella with Trevor Von Eeden

In addition to being a four-time Grammy Award®–winning singer-songwriter, New York Times best-selling author and critically acclaimed actress, Scott has performed on Broadway and starred in films such as Why Did I Get Married?, The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency, Steel Magnolias [2012] and many more. The platinum-selling triple threat began her career collaborating in the late 1990s with Philly music icons The Roots and Will Smith, and has garnered No. 1 albums that include “The Light in the Sun” and her most recent release, “Woman.”

Low-E Windows and Heat Damage: Why It Occurs and What To Do About It

Low emissivity, or Low-E windows as they’re sometimes called, are windows that contain a highly reflective coating on the glass. That coating reflects both heating and cooling back into homes, which reduces solar heat gain in the summer to lower energy bills. In fact, the Department of Energy projects that installing Low-E storm windows saves the average homeowner somewhere between 12 to 33 percent on their annual utility bills.

That’s great for your energy profile—but it may not be so swell for your next-door neighbors. In rare cases, the reflective power of Low-E windows is so strong that it causes massive heat damage to neighbor’s homes. A number of complaints have emerged over the last decade, with homeowners claiming their neighbor’s Low-E windows melted their vinyl siding. Vinyl is essentially hardened plastic, so it’s temperature sensitive, just like plastic. In temperatures over 160 to 165 degrees, it can soften and eventually warp, droop, and ripple.

Luckily, it never gets that hot on Earth, so most of the time, vinyl makes a fine choice for external cladding. However, put it next to a Low-E window and the result could be disastrous. That’s because sunlight striking the specially-coated Low-E windows sometimes acts like a magnifying glass, concentrating the sunlight onto a single point. And for some unlucky neighbors, that point just happens to be located on the side of their vinyl-clad home. Today we’ll take a look at why Low-E windows cause heat damage, what to do about it, and how likely it is to happen in your home.

morning sunshine on the bed

Understanding Why Heat Damage Occurs

Under normal circumstances, Low-E windows will hang for many years without causing any problems at all. In fact, the conditions that occur to give Low-E windows the power to melt glass are quite rare. The issue isn’t completely understood yet, but it results from differences in barometric pressure between the interior and exterior panes of glass in double paned windows (the majority of Low-E windows are double paned). This difference in pressure occasionally causes the windows to become slightly concave. That, in turn, magnifies the light reflecting off the windows—according to some accounts, the beam could reach up to 200 degrees Fahrenheit. And that’s definitely hot enough to melt plastic.

How Likely Is Low-E Damage?

That said, if you install Low-E windows on your home, you haven’t necessarily just bought a vinyl-melting laser beam (or signed up for an awkward conversation with your neighbors). There have only been a handful of cases reported, so you’re probably safe. If you’re worried about it, though, you can cut your losses by following these guidelines:

  • Don’t install Low-E windows on a home that’s less than 20 feet away from the house next door, particularly if that house has vinyl siding.
  • Carefully weigh the benefits of installing Low-E glass on windows that receive a lot of light through south-facing windows. The majority of cases have involved a home’s south-facing windows.
  • Consider adding an arbor or other shading between your home and your neighbor’s. This will protect your neighbors from any potential damage—and it may reduce cooling costs in your home, as well!
  • If arbors are not an option, consider adding a polycarbonate awning to the window to reduce glare. According to the Department of Energy, this also reduces solar heat gain by up to 77 percent on west-facing windows and up to 65 percent on south-facing ones.
  • Check the warranty on your windows to see if it covers heat damage. Some manufacturers have removed heat damage coverage from their policies, so be sure to read through the warranty first before you make a final purchase.

Sheets of Tempered Window Glass

Are Low-E Windows Still Worth It?

In the vast majority of cases, the answer is an emphatic yes. Heat damage only happens to a proportionally small amount of homes, when the conditions are just right. In the majority of cases, all a home receives as the result of installing are lowered heating and cooling bills, since the Low-E coating reduces heating and cooling losses by somewhere between 30 to 50 percent.

Spectrally selective Low-E coatings allow you to block heat-causing ultraviolet and infrared waves from the sun without limiting the amount of visible light allowed through the glass, like you might with tinted windows. That means more light indoors, while saving energy. And in some areas, Low-E coatings are required by local energy codes, as well.

If you follow the precautions listed above, you should be able to have your energy efficient windows without upsetting the neighbors. After all, you know what they say: good fences make good neighbors. In the case of Low-E windows, they may just be one way to avoid legal trouble, too!

Roughly 37 children die every year in hot cars, according to the safety organization Kids and Cars. And parents who think they could never possibly forget their child in the car should think again.

“It is very important to always check the back seat of the car, and to look before you lock,” said Shannon Garton, MD, family medicine physician at Kaiser Permanente’s Edwards Medical Offices in Edwards, Colorado. “Parents can have a change in routine, be stressed or busy, so while it may seem impossible to forget a child is in a car, it does happen.”

Research shows that habits, such as driving from home to work every day, interfere with brain functioning when there’s a change to the routine. Forgotten Baby Syndrome is a result of the brain’s ability to allow you to do things without thinking about them, according to published interviews with David Diamond, a professor at the University of South Florida who has been studying Forgotten Baby Syndrome since 2004.

Look before you lock

Parents and caregivers should take the following steps in order to prevent heat stroke tragedies:

  • Look before you lock and get into the habit of checking the back seat before leaving your vehicle.
  • Put something you’ll need, like a cell phone or wallet, in the back seat.
  • Keep a large stuffed animal in the child’s car seat. When the child is in the seat, place the animal in the front seat as a visual reminder that the child is in the car.
  • Keep cars locked at all times and keep keys out of reach of children.
  • Use drive-through services when available and pay for gas at the pump.

Why children are so at risk

On a 90-degree day, the temperature inside a car can reach 160 degrees in 10 minutes, Dr. Garton said. Rolling down the windows doesn’t help, and a car’s oven-like heat can develop on cooler days, too.

“It is never safe to leave a child or a pet in a car,” she said.

Children, and especially infants, are more prone to have heat exhaustion or heat stroke because they have fewer sweat glands and are not as able to adapt as quickly to the temperature, Dr. Garton said. A child’s temperature can rise up to five times faster than an adult’s, and pets also cannot tolerate hot temperatures as well as adult humans.

“On a day when the outside temperature is 80-100 degrees, the interior of a car can reach 130-170, and the majority of this temperature rise occurs during the first 15 minutes,” Dr. Garton said.

There have also been numerous cases in which curious young children climb into a car on their own without their parents’ knowledge.

“If a child is missing, checking all compartments of a car is one important place to look, even if the car is locked,” she said.

The body’s response to heat

Heat stroke, which is the main killer of children in hot cars, is the most severe reaction the body has to heat. Signs include hot, flushed skin with a high fever over 105 degrees, Dr. Garton said, adding that a rectal temperature is more accurate than an oral temperature in these cases.

“Fifty percent of children with heat stroke do not sweat,” she said. “Heat stroke can cause confusion, coma or shock.”

Any sort of exposure to heat can cause these kinds of reactions in the body. Exercising in the heat, for example, can increase the risk for these symptoms, especially if a person is not well-hydrated, Dr. Garton said.

Other physiologic responses to heat include cramping in the calf, thighs or stomach, all of which are signs of dehydration. Heat exhaustion is characterized by pale skin, profuse sweating and nausea, and can also include dizziness, fainting or weakness.

“A person can progress from heat exhaustion to heat stroke. Again, with heat exhaustion, it is very important to hydrate, get into a cooler place and rest,” Dr. Garton said. “If at any time a patient is not able to adequately hydrate orally due to nausea, listlessness or vomiting, it is important to seek medical care to get IV hydration done.”

Because children are often unable to verbalize their symptoms, look for warning signs such as listlessness, pale or beet-red skin that is hot to the touch.

“If you are concerned that your child is suffering a reaction to the heat, and especially if they are not able to appropriately hydrate on their own, seek immediate medical attention,” Dr. Garton said.
