‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Season 2 Finale Gives Trump Resistance Much Needed Hope

George Kraychyk

Season two of The Handmaid’s Tale has been a tough hang.

From the threat of a mass hanging at Fenway Park in the premiere, to the violent rape of our heroine in the 10th episode, to, most recently, the public drowning of 15-year-old Eden and her forbidden lover, the show’s dystopian landscape was often too brutal to bear.

We were granted a glimmer of hope of when Elisabeth Moss’ June (can we please stop calling her Offred now?) heard Oprah Winfrey’s comforting voice coming through her car radio from “somewhere in the Great White North.” Of course, moments later that hope was dashed when June ultimately failed to bust through the garage door and escape.

Omarosa Says Hope Hicks’ White Lies For Trump Included the Size of His Inauguration Crowd

During her first late-night appearance since leaving Celebrity Big Brother, Omarosa Manigault Newman reflected on her one-year experience of being a White House aide during a wide-ranging interview.

The star, who left her position in January, even discussed the latest Trump staffer casualty: her former boss and third White House communications director Hope Hicks.

“You worked for her you know what the lies were?” Colbert inquired, referencing Hicks’ reported admission to a House panel that she’s told white lies for the president.

“I suspect the first one would be about crowd size but I don’t want to go into it,” Manigault Newman teased before sharing further detail on her comment. “I got to see the inauguration of Clinton, of Bush, of Obama and when we got to the Trump inauguration they said this is the largest crowd size. I said, ‘Man I’ve been to a lot of inaugurations, this wasn’t the biggest.’ I didn’t want to be the one to break it to him. I didn’t want to be that person.”

Following his Jan. 20, 2017, inauguration, Trump repetitively claimed more people attended his inauguration than Obama’s 2009 swearing-in and even demanded photographic proof.

During the 19-minute interview – only some of which aired on television, Manigault Newman also said that only time will tell whether the country will be all right under Trump.

“We’ll have to wait and see,” Manigault Newman said vaguely responding to the host’s inquiry about her “it’s not going to be okay” comment during CBB. “I think working for the White House was a little crazier.”

When asked if some of his presidential actions make her doubt him as the commander-in-chief, she expressed her loyalty to her longtime pal, who has fired her multiple times now.

“Look Donald Trump was my friend for 15 years,” Manigault Newman explained. “He was my friend and watching him in this position has caused me to be excited sometimes and sometimes be very, very concerned.”

Adding, “I think if you woke up and your best friend was president tomorrow you’d have that same range of emotions.”

Manigault Newman first found fame in 2004 as a contestant on Trump’s reality TV show The Apprentice, before he ultimately fired her. Then over a decade later, in 2017, she joined Trump’s administration as director of communications for the White House Office of Public Liaison and was one of the president’s most prominent African American supporters.

She also served as his director of African-American outreach during his presidential campaign.

As Wednesday’s appearance was her first TV interview since she made controversial comments on CBB, Manigault Newman clarified some of them, including her comparison of leaving the White House to getting “freed off the plantation.”

“The White House that I worked in at the Trump administration, it was troubling. And it was very difficult. My analogy of it being a plantation: an ecosystem of people who feel oppressed is pretty clear,” she told Colbert.

“When you aren’t allowed to do the job you were brought to do. To help be a change agent, to be a liaison for communities that need it, that’s where that oppression comes from,” Manigault Newman continued.

“And that’s what that analogy meant Stephen if they were an African-American woman. I was speaking for myself, I can’t speak for everyone in the White House. I was speaking for how I felt being the only African-American advisor to President Donald Trump,” she said.

WATCH: Celebrity Big Brother’s Omarosa Warns That Country Should Be Worried About Trump

Manigault Newman claims she resigned from her position at the White House and the Trump administration on Jan. 20. However, a day after Manigault Newman appeared on CBB, the White House revealed she had been fired.

“Omarosa was fired three times on the ‘Apprentice’ and this was the fourth time we let her go,” White House Deputy Press Secretary Raj Shah said earlier this month during a press briefing. “She had limited contact with the president while here. She has no contact now.”

Despite the statement, Manigault Newman still maintains it was her decision to leave.

“I love the dramatic. The way they described this the White House sounds more reality TV-ish,” Manigault Newman said. “It was less sexy than that. I committed to a year with this administration. We started January 20 of last year and this would’ve been one year. It’s simple as that.”

Adding, “I committed to doing one year. I think one year in the Trump White House is more than enough for me.”

I know what you’re thinking. In Kirby Star Allies, by way of Kirby’s classic ability to inhale and assimilate enemies, isn’t every character your ally? Isn’t this even moreso the case with Kirby’s new ability to charm enemies by throwing hearts at them?

There’s a difference between Kirby allies and Kirby friends. Kirby friends are the equivalent of helpers — enemies you can turn into friends to use their abilities throughout the level. They’re tools. Kirby allies are moreso actual characters, intended for fans to fall in love with and pine for their cameos in new versions. Kinda like this!

Given the nature of Kirby games, the list of allies is quite similar to the list of villains. It’s normal for characters on either side of the line to swap allegiances for a short time. So you’ll forgive us if we include Meta Knight just because he’s awesome and cute. Nobody’s a full-time villain here.

The names are similarly … similar. With monikers from Lololo to Lalala to Dedede, you’d be forgiven for thinking the naming of Kirby characters fell to an executive’s three month-old child. Tsk, tsk. Nepotism.

We know there are some animal friend cameos planned from the likes of Nago, Pitch, and ChuChu. But which of these strings of repeated syllables do we hope to see in Kirby Star Allies? For that we’ll have to reach back across the franchise for our favourites.

Kirby Star Allies Meta Knight

Meta Knight

Friend or foe? You never really know. Meta Knight, leader of the meta knights (because that’s so meta), looks very much like an armoured version of Kirby. His motivations have always been mysterious, and despite breaking his mask, we’ve never seen his face.

Even when Meta Knight is fighting against Kirby though, you have to respect him. He’s nothing if not honourable, and will offer Kirby a sword to make the fight fair.

We hope to see more of this character both because he’s a fan favourite, and because we want to know more about him. His mystery is part of his charm, but throughout the series each appearance has revealed something new.

In Meta Knightmare Ultra we learned he’s on a quest to become the greatest warrior in the galaxy. In Revenge of the Meta Knight we learned he hates laziness. And in the anime, we learn that Meta Knight does take into account the greater good, which is ultimately his reason for helping Kirby.

Kirby Star Allies Chef Kawasaki

Chef Kawasaki

Racking up what must be the most appearances in the Kirby series (yes, other than Kirby, you pedantic scoundrel) is Chef Kawasaki, another villain-turned-friend.

Kawasaki is the perfect compliment to Kirby. On one hand, we have a hero who can’t stop eating. On the other, we have an ally who can’t stop cooking. Boom.

Kawasaki is also the source of one of Kirby’s most powerful abilities: Cook.

Don’t let the understated name fool you. This effectively clears the entire screen of enemies other than bosses. Due to its power, this is one of the few Copy Abilities that only gives you one use.

Kirby Star Allies has a lot of powerups just floating around mid-level, so we’re not sure the game has much use for a character that would dole out tasty treats for Kirby’s benefit. The level design itself is already quite liberally sprinkled with things for Kirby to eat.

Even if we don’t see Chef Kawasaki, it’d be great to see some continuation of the robotisation of characters, a la Mecha Kawasaki.

Kirby Star Allies Adeleine

Adeleine

The child painter who could bring her creations to life, we don’t just hope to see a Kirby Star Allies Adeleine, we hope to see more Adeleine in general.

She can be sweet and paint into reality items or creatures to help Kirby. But the last time we saw her she was possessed by Dark Matter, turning on Kirby. Adeleine as an enemy is extremely dangerous, bringing a conga line of past bosses into existence with a flick of her brush.

This is an idea that could use a lot more exploring, both thematically and in terms of gameplay. If Drawn to Life can animate whatever pixel art abominations we put together, imagine the same idea with the backing of Nintendo.

Whether or not we’re controlling her, and whether or not she’s on our side, it’s a super cool ability that deserves more screen time.

Kirby Star Allies Angie

Angie

There’s a lot of potential for newer characters from Kirby’s Epic Yarn to make a jump into more traditional 3D cartoon graphics, and we think a great candidate would be Angie. Even moreso than Prince Fluff.

This smiley angel would carry you to your teammate whenever you wished, and would save you from fatal falls — at the cost of a few beads. It’s a similar role to Lakitu in Mario Kart.

We haven’t seen any of Angie so far in the promotional material, and we probably would have if she played a major “saving Kirby’s bacon” kind of role. But this is a series that loves cameos. Anything’s possible.

We could see all or none of the above allies. But we are slowly building a list of all the friends (and their abilities) for you to assimilate in Kirby Star Allies. Check it out here.

USA Women’s Hockey Team Is Now the Great American Olympic Hope

As expected, the United States women’s hockey team defeated Finland, with ease, on Monday afternoon at the Olympic tournament semifinals in South Korea. The 5-0 win pushes the U.S. into the gold medal game. Let me speak for all Americans when I say … Whew.

If Finland had upset the Americans — and a Finland victory would have been a monumental upset — panic would have overswept the nation. Enraged fans would have lit sticks (hockey) and stones (curling) on fire.

Yes, the great Olympic meltdown of 2018 would have been all but complete. But don’t go berserk quite yet. The women’s hockey team is here to save us.

You may have heard that Team USA hasn’t exactly been rocking the medal count. As of late Sunday in the U.S., the Americans were tied for sixth in the total medals standings, with 10, a full 16 pieces of hardware behind medals leader Norway. Sure, Norway’s a cross-country skiing factory, and a general winter wonderland. But Norway’s up by like seven touchdowns in the third quarter.

Even a Norwegian freestyle skier, Oystein Bratten, won the slopestyle event on Sunday. Events like extreme skiing was pretty much invented to pad the American medal count. The Americans swept the slopestyle podium in Sochi, and won just a silver here.

For context, Team USA won 28 medals four years ago in Sochi, to Norway’s 26. The measly totals in PyeongChang are particularly embarrassing because the United States sent the largest Winter Olympic team in history — 242 athletes strong — to South Korea.

But don’t panic quite yet. While the American women’s hockey team won’t singlehandedly make up the medal difference, its pursuit of a first hockey gold in two decades is something worth cheering for. The American onslaught of Finland in the semis started early, when Gigi Marvin, on an assist from captain Meghan Duggan, scored just over two minutes into the game. Later in the period, Dani Cameransi picked off a pass and fired an unassisted shot past Finnish goaltender Noora Raty to give the Americans a 2-0 lead.

In the second period Jocelyn Lamoureux-Davidson — who scored two goals in six seconds against the Olympic Athletes from Russia (OAR) during round-robin play — put the Americans up 3-0 when she fired a slap shot into the net while the Americans held a 5-on-3 advantage on the ice. And as in the Russia game, Team USA came back with a quick goal, though it was Hilary Knight who joined the fray: Knight scored 34 seconds later on a power play to effectively clinch it. “You had to have a gold-medal mentality today,” says U.S. coach Robb Stauber. “There’s no way you can go out there and do what we did if your foot’s not on the gas. We did things right from start to finish.”

So now, the U.S. likely faces arch-rival Canada, winner of every Olympic tournament since the 2002 Salt Lake City Games, in Thursday’s gold medal duel. (Canada plays the OAR squad in other semifinal late-Monday in South Korea) Canada hasn’t lost an Olympic hockey game in 20 years, since Feb. 17, 1998 in Nagano, when the Americans won 3-1 and took the first-ever Olympic women’s tournament.

Americans besides the women’s hockey team could win gold. Skier Lindsey Vonn will race in the downhill event on Wednesday; she won the downhill in Vancouver. Mikaela Shiffrin — already one of five American gold medalists with her giant slalom win last week — could join her in that race, and Shiffrin’s a favorite in the combined (slalom and downhill) event, which is scheduled for Friday. Americans could grab gold in women’s and men’s halfpipe skiing; Maddie Bowman and David Wise are the defending champs in those events. Medals in bobsled and ice dancing are also up for grabs.

Read More: Why the USA vs. Canada Women’s Hockey Rivalry Isn’t Over Yet in PyeongChang

Still, a women’s hockey gold medal would just feel better than the others. Canada beat the U.S. 2-1 in a preliminary round contest; players like Duggan and Knight and Lamoureux-Davidson have lost two straight gold medal games to Canada. The Sochi defeat is still bitter. In that gold medal game, the American blew a late 2-0 lead and lost in overtime 3-2. These American players leave little doubt that they’re seeking vengeance. “Everything’s at stake,” Duggan said before the Olympics even started.

Though the four straight snowboarding golds the Americans won in the first week of the Games — by Red Gerard, Jamie Anderson, Chloe Kim and Shaun White on successive days — were at times electrifying, another win outsides the X-Games genre would be nice. Speedskating, for example, has been a bust. The American men have come up empty in alpine skiing, and Shiffrin missed the podium in slalom, her best event.

A hockey win over a tough opponent adds an extra sweetener. We celebrate rivalry victories in hockey like no other. But the Russian men’s hockey team crushed the U.S. 4-0 in a preliminary round game. The men start their elimination games on Tuesday. The U.S. men are still in the mix, but haven’t looked all that strong.

So hockey hopes falls on the women. Some of the players have had casual conversations about U.S. underperformance at these Olympics with their teammates. But they’re not using it as some sort of rallying cry. Let’s Do It For Those Suffering American Fans! “We’re at the Olympics, there’s enough pressure as it is,” says Monique Lamoureux-Morando, Jocelyn’s twin sister, and another veteran of those two straight gold medal game losses to Canada. But Stauber, the team’s coach, and his players are not blind to reality. “At the of the day, we have very proud players,” he says. “We can feel that we have a lot of people pulling for us. There’s nothing we’d love more than to deliver what they’re pulling for.”

A panicked America would be grateful.

How Nathan Chen Became America’s Greatest Hope for Figure Skating Glory at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics

Nathan Chen hit the ice jumping when he landed in PyeongChang, South Korea to compete in his first Winter Olympic Games. Despite not sleeping through the night because of jet lag, the young American star managed to skate all three practice sessions to which he was assigned and he held little back, landing most of the challenging quadruple jumps for which he’s known.

That bodes well for the first member of the U.S. Olympic figure skating team scheduled to compete in PyeongChang. Chen, 18, will skate the short program portion of the team event this Thursday, Feb. 8, at 8pm ET, a day before the official Olympics opening ceremony on Feb. 9.

It’s a moment Chen was all but groomed for. When he was seven, Chen used to perform a routine set to “I Just Can’t Wait to be King” from the Lion King, decked out in a Simba costume with hoodie, ears and tail that his mother made for the occasion. Few could have predicted how prescient it was.

Chen is now the two-time U.S. national figure skating champion and is known as the Quad King for being the first skater in the world to land five quadruple jumps in a single program. Most elite figure skaters perfect just one or two of the four-rotation jumps. But Chen’s ability to whip off five different quad jumps makes him a favorite to win individual Olympic gold in PyeongChang.

A native of Salt Lake City and the youngest of five, Chen displayed his extraordinary skating skill from an early age, landing his first triple jumps at 10. Mastering quad jumps was an extension of the work ethic instilled by his parents, who immigrated from China. “My parents always wanted the very best from me, and pushed me further and further,” Chen tells TIME. “That stuck with me, and it’s something I’ve taken hold of myself and tried to improve on.”

As a rising junior figure skater, Chen noticed a “dry spell” in men’s skating in the U.S. during which there “hasn’t been too much motivation to do quad jumps,” he says. (A U.S. man’s last Olympic skating medal was Evan Lysacek’s gold in 2010.) “I was seeing younger guys at international competitions do crazy things, and realized we were a little far behind, and that we needed to keep pushing forward.”

Watching a competitor from China packing his figure skating programs with three quad jumps sparked a competitive fire in Chen. “Knowing that other guys were far ahead of me switched a light on in my head, that it was really important to get these quad jumps,” he says.

Trained in ballet and gymnastics along with skating, Chen’s strength and technique offered a strong foundation for building his repertoire of quad jumps. His training partner and Olympic teammate, Adam Rippon, says Chen is “one of the best jumpers in the world” and credits Chen with improving his own figure skating.

Chen is also among the most versatile. His programs seem to be a continuous work in progress — this season he has not performed the same long program twice, switching up his figure skating jumps depending on how he is feeling physically and compensating for any mistakes he may have made. Because he is able to execute five different quadruple jumps (not to mention their triple versions too), he has a range of tricks he can slide into his routines. “I’m the only skater currently who can do all five quads. So having that technical difficulty in my arsenal allows me to manipulate my program however I want during competition.”

The downside of all that flexibility (and sheer physical force) is the toll it can take on his body. Just after winning his first medal, a bronze, at the senior U.S. national championships in 2016, Chen injured his hip, forcing him to spend five months off the ice to recover.

Once back in the rink, Chen focused on soaring even higher. “I never set out to do these programs, or to make history,” he says. “I just like to keep pushing myself and the sport.”

Hope Solo Is Running for President of the U.S. Soccer Federation

Looking to add another title to her name. Hope Solo is in the running to become president of the U.S. Soccer Federation – and she’s confident she’s the one for the job.

The World Cup champion, 36, announced her candidacy for the position in a lengthy Facebook post on Thursday, December 7, titled “Why I’m Running for President of U.S. Soccer.”

“I know exactly what U.S. Soccer needs to do, I know exactly how to do it, and I possess the fortitude to get it done,” she wrote. “I have always been willing to sacrifice for what I believe in and I believe there is no greater sacrifice then fighting for equal opportunity, integrity and honesty, especially in an organization like the USSF that could give so much more to our communities across the nation.”

The former national team goalkeeper added, “The only way for American soccer to propel itself on the world’s stage is by creating a culture that is diverse and by shedding a mentality that is no longer acceptable,” before she began listing the core principles on which she’ll be campaigning. Equality and women’s issues, and youth and diversity were among the list.

Solo is one of the most decorated players in U.S. soccer history. She represented the U.S. at three Olympic Games where she won two gold medals, and three straight World Cups. In August 2016, she was suspended for six months – and had her contract terminated – after she called the Swedish team “a bunch of cowards” following Team USA’s loss in the quarterfinals at the Rio Olympics.

‘Destiny 2: Curse of Osiris’ Review: A Glimmer of Hope or Just a Bad Loot Drop?

After all the online controversy over the current state of Destiny 2, it’s easy to forget how captivating its core gameplay can actually be. As the glare of the sun illuminates Mercury’s majestic yellow structures and a hauntingly melancholic Egyptian melody fades into the foreground, Curse of Osiris’ opening mission reminds me exactly what made the franchise so enticing in the first place.

At its best, Destiny 2 is a game where stonkingly-high production values and fluid-feeling gameplay come together like few others. It’s a grin-inducing co-op experience where eye-rolling intergalactic melodrama, satisfying shooting and addictive loot-loops collide to keep you in a constant state of bliss.

Now, after two months off, I’m ready to fill that engram-shaped hole in my heart once again. Yet, unfortunately, only mere moments after being wowed by Curse of Osiris, the depressing reality of Destiny 2 hits me like a Red Legion battleship.

Once again, PVP offers more of the same in ‘Curse of Osiris.’

For every beautifully designed mission in this new expansion, there’s another that’s a carbon copy of one from the base game. For every tantalising new weapon and armour set, there’s a baffling mess of conflicting progression systems.

In short, Curse of Osiris isn’t the fixer-upper many fans hoped for — in fact, it arguably feels even more disjointed than the main game.

A Loot Drop Worth Holding out For?

It’s a shame because there are some genuinely brilliant moments littered across this fleeting campaign. Artistically, the new setting of Mercury and the Infinite Forest provide some of the most aesthetically memorable experiences you’ll find in the franchise to date.

With the eponymous Osiris having gone missing while fleeing the Vex, it’s your job to delve into the robot race’s time-bending playground and bring him back. After battling your way across the sand-splashed steps of Mercury, a sea of brightly coloured swirling vortexes suddenly usher you into this robot-controlled simulation – The Infinite Forest.

New planet Mercury is the highlight of an otherwise sparse DLC offering.

With this Vex world functioning as a reality-bending simulation, each visit to The Infinite Forest gives players a randomly generated environment. Unsurprisingly, this makes visits there brilliantly unpredictable. Yet, despite the ever-changing environments keeping players on their toes, the campaign’s pitiful difficulty level certainly doesn’t.

Yet, it’s not just the easy cannon fodder that quickly turns Curse of Osiris’ story missions into a tedious exercise. Just as I began to enjoy navigating the stunning locales on Mercury, it seemed as though the team began to panic about overusing their interesting new setting. This means that players are instead forced to do a few incredibly familiar-feeling missions on planets they’ve already been to.

To make matters worse, the story is incredibly bare bones here. With Osiris only showing up at the start and the end of the campaign (and Bungie only bothering to animate two proper cutscenes) the whole thing just feels incredibly half-baked. The much-touted new ghost, Sagira, is disappointing too, with her grating quips making her feel like a Clayde-6-lite — all sass and no actual personality.

The Infinite Forest is a refreshing and clever new environment that changes on each visit.

It feels like the symptom of a larger problem that plagues Destiny 2 – an over-reliance on the same few ideas.

Less of an Expansion, More of an Iteration

You may remember that at launch, we were fairly fond of Destiny 2. Thanks to the sequel’s grander storytelling ambitions, stunning visuals and more open environments, the game’s first 20 hours felt exactly like the sci-fi spectacle we hoped for. Unfortunately though, it’s what came after that disappointed.

Once the main campaign was done, players were left with a solid but uninspiring Crucible component, a slow-crawl to level up, or with simplying farming the same strikes and public events over and over. The addition of the Leviathan raid improved this slightly, but for many, the repetitive slog of the end-game saw them leave Destiny 2 in droves.

Ultimately, those hoping that Curse of Osiris will have enough substantial new additions or well-considered fixes to bring them back to the engram-loving horde are going to be bitterly disappointed. Like with the first few expansions for Destiny 1, this early DLC feels very much like a stop-gap release.

The Vex are the main enemy this time around, but sadly, there aren’t really any new enemy types to speak of.

There are also a few baffling decisions showcased here. While the power level cap has been raised from 20 to 25, increasing your power level is largely irrelevant. With missions, raids and strikes still locked behind a player’s light level, guardians will still be lusting after loot to level them up. So why bother giving players another unnecessary bar to fill up?

It’s been no secret that Bungie has been desperately working to appease players, but despite some welcome changes to Destiny 2‘s systems, there’s simply not enough here to make Curse of Osiris worth the cash. What should have been an innovative and exciting new content drop instead just feels like filler.

It’s worth noting that the new raid layer has yet to go live. We will update our review once we’ve cleared it.

Is Curse of Osiris Any Good?

This is an expansion that’s a mix of the brilliant and the lazy, the ill-thought out and the majestic. In other words, it’s not bad, but it should have been so much more. And sadly that’s exactly what many fans have come to expect from Destiny. Destiny 2 may well be worth playing again in the future, but as it stands, you’re better off waiting for the inevitable Taken Kingstyle year two refresh.

Harvesting Hope for Women Farmworkers

There are almost 700,000 women, mostly immigrants, who make up the agricultural workforce in the Unites States. Day to day, they pick and package the food that ends up on dinner plates across the country. This back-breaking work goes largely uncompensated and women farmworkers are uniquely vulnerable at the hands of both their male co-workers as well as the companies and state-systems that further exploit them. Alianza Nacional de Campesinas is fighting for their liberation.

via Alianza Nacional de Campesinas on change.org

Made up of current and former farmworker women as well as women who hail from farmworker families, Alianza Campesinas centers the needs of farmworker women through national policy and advocacy reform as well as leadership development and grassroots organizing efforts.

On November 12, Alianza Campesinas wrote a letter of solidarity to the women and men in Hollywood who, in the wake of the allegations on Harvey Weinstein, have come forward with their own experiences of sexual harassment and assault. On behalf of the hundreds of thousands of women who work in agricultural fields and packing sheds of the U.S., they wrote:

We do not work under bright stage lights or on the big screen. We work in the shadows of society in isolated fields and packinghouses that are out of sight and out of mind for most people in this country. Your job feeds souls, fills hearts and spreads joy. Our job nourishes the nation with the fruits, vegetables and other crops that we plant, pick and pack… Even though we work in very different environments, we share a common experience of being preyed upon by individuals who have the power to hire, fire, blacklist and otherwise threaten our economic, physical and emotional security. Like you, there are few positions available to us and reporting any kind of harm or injustice committed against us doesn’t seem like a viable option.”

Farmworker women generally earn minimum wage (and often less), have no health insurance and receive no paid days off for vacation or sick leave. Women are often given the least desired, lowest paying positions and are the first to be laid off. As well, women farmworkers find it difficult to secure opportunities to advance due to a culture of gender discrimination within the farmworker’s administration. On top of being underpaid, women farmworkers—like femmes in what seems like all industries—face gender-based discrimination, harassment and violence.

Pregnant women in the fields are exposed to toxic pesticides which has been directly linked to infertility, miscarriage and birth defects. Employers reportedly illegally pay women on their spouses check in order to evade social welfare payments such as Social Security; not issuing individual payments prevents women from obtaining certain legal benefits as well as ties women worker’s economic security to their husbands whims, limiting immigrant women’s financial and bodily autonomy.

Attacks on black and brown immigrants via surveillance, detention and deportation add another layer to the violence experienced by farmworker women. Undocumented women “are often the primary caregivers for children, making them less likely to asset their rights for fear of being fired or, worse, being deported and separated from their families,” explains the Southern Poverty Law Center. “And because of their fear of being reported to immigration authorities, they are reluctant to report wage violations, sexual violence or gender discrimination, or to take legal action to stop it.”

Alianza Campesinas has launched the Harvesting Hope Giving Campaign in order to fundraise needed financial for their continued work on the Bandana Project, an art activism campaign aimed at raising awareness about the pervasive gender-based violence that farmworker women face at work. Donations to the campaign will support the Bandana Project as well as provide valuable resources to support Alianza Campesina’s civic engagement programs, leadership development efforts and advocacy initiatives.

In a 2010 study from the University of California, Santa Cruz, more than 60 percent of the 150 female farmworkers interviewed said they had experienced some form of sexual harassment. In a 2012 report, surveying 52 female farmworkers, Human Rights Watch  found that almost all of them had experienced sexual violence. “One woman [farmworker] told investigators that her workplace was called the ‘field de calzón,’ or ‘field of panties,’” the New York Times reported in 2016. “As an Iowa immigrant farmworker told her lawyer, ‘We thought it was normal in the United States that in order to keep your job, you had to have sex.’”

The Ms. Q&A: Barbara Smith on Finding Hope in the Struggle

The Combahee River Collective’s Black Feminist Statement turns 40 this year, along with the National Women’s Studies Association (NWSA). In honor of the anniversaries, the intersections of feminist academia and the movement for black lives is the central focus of this year’s NWSA Conference. Barbara Smith, co-founder of the Collective, talked to Ms. about its legacy in the feminist movement, intersectionality and identity politics and finding hope in the struggle.

Wikimedia / Creative Commons

What is your hope for the legacy of the Combahee River Collective?

Smith: We were about doing organizing, black feminist organizing. We did more than write a statement. We were committed to both theory and practice. That’s what makes the Combahee River Collective unique. It was very clear that we weren’t just talking about black feminist identity. We were about doing the work, and that still needs to be the case.

Could you describe the work you were getting done?

We were organizing around issues affecting black women at a time when no one thought those issues existed. No one was talking about violence against women or reproductive rights as they impacted women of color.  The white women’s movement defined those issues through a white lens, and black nationalism and black power at that time were not paying attention to race and white supremacy on black women.  Very few were talking about homophobia.  Our statement looked at all of those issues with an incisive anti-capitalist perspective. We were looking at all the issues affecting black women.  We had not identified all issues at the writing of the statement, but we laid out a template that would allow people to identify those issues in the future and struggle around them.

Were you also involved in NWSA at the time?

I was at the first NWSA conference following the founding of the association. It was the same year I presented “Racism and Women’s Studies.”

What would you say is the significance of NWSA celebrating the anniversary of the CRC Black Feminist Statement alongside its own anniversary?

It’s quite amazing because the politics of the Combahee River Collective were radical leftist politics. The fact that now, this many years later, that the NWSA would see value in our legacy and those interventions, I’m amazed to this day. Personally, I had two focuses at that time: the building of black women’s studies and the building of black feminism.  I did not necessarily see those two things as residing comfortably with each other, particularly on the academic women’s studies side. So the fact that the work I was involved in simultaneously would be recognized as being of value by the leading women’s studies organization in the nation, that was quite profound. I think it shows that there’s been growth and development.

Have we learned the lessons from Combahee River Collective’s black feminist statement? There has been a great deal of lip service to “intersectionality,” and although we can recognize someone like Kimberlé Crenshaw coining the term intersectionality, I think most of us recognize the work Combahee River Collective did in laying the foundation for that analysis.

I think our focus on the simultaneity of oppression and identity politics, the concepts we brought forth in our statement work hand in hand with intersectionality. Historically the statement predates the work Crenshaw did on critical race theory and the development of the term. But they are absolutely in concert with each other and they are focused on similar political perspectives on how women of color experience oppression and how we fight it.

Do you think we have grasped the complexity around intersectionality and multiple oppressions?

Well, you can’t work on one vector of oppression and think you’re going to solve whatever problem you’re addressing. You have to be able to understand how systems of oppression connect with each other. So, let’s say you’re working on Food Insecurity and the undermining of safe and healthy food supplies, even if that’s where you are focusing your struggle, you still need an understanding of how class, race, gender, sexuality, how they have impact on the work you’re doing and you should also just care about what other people are worried about at the same time.

Here in Albany, we have a neighborhood that has serious environmental injustice with pollution coming from freight trains and diesel trucks. If we only focus on food apartheid–a better term than food deserts or food insecurity–and don’t take into account the other environmental injustices happening, even in that regard, we’ve missed the boat. The same neighborhood also experiences gun violence and high unemployment, so we cannot address these issues by looking simplistically at just one vector of oppression. But there has been so many distortion and lies about what we meant by identity politics.

In Mark Lilla’s recent book, The Once and Future Liberal: After Identity Politics, he cites from the Combahee River Collective statement, and it’s at the beginning of a chapter titled “Pseudo Politics.” It’s so incredibly insulting! Here’s someone who probably didn’t lift a finger to effect actual political change, but sits in his comfort and privilege to tell others what to think of these political issues. He’s gotten major play for saying awful things about those of us who think it is important to take into account the various standpoints from those of us who are not white, male, cisgender, heterosexual and wealthy. His arguments only work for those who identify that way, but they don’t think they’re practicing identity politics when in fact they are.

What is the biggest misunderstanding about identity politics?

When we used the term identity politics, we did not mean that we would not work with anyone who was different from ourselves and that we did not believe strongly and fervently in coalition politics. We did. The reason that we used the term identity politics is because we were asserting in the mid to late 1970’s that black women had a right to create our own political agendas based upon our actual political identities. No one ever brings this up.

When anyone talks about the failures of and the wrongheadedness of identity politics, they never examine or acknowledge what we meant for ourselves. And that I find infuriating. Because their understandings are so superficial. They want to use our own words to beat us up with and anyone else who thinks it makes a difference if you’re a trans woman of color who’s homeless and whose experiences will color the ways that she sees the world and what her needs are when it comes to change and social justice. Instead they take the most simplistic meaning and don’t place it in a proper historical context.

For black women in the 1970’s to say that the most meaningful politics come out of our identities, that was a revolutionary statement. No one else was saying that. Of course today, even Beyoncé can be a black feminist, but how did she get to be one?

How do you think multiple systems of oppression and identity politics play out in our current political climate?

The majority of people living in the United States are under attack by the present administration –  Muslims, women, LGBT people, black people, immigrants, poor people. One of the things I have said in the past and what this period embodies is that the right wing has an intersectional perspective about who they hold in contempt and who they wish to obliterate. The counter to that is a multi-issued coalition politics to fight and challenge all these attacks that are coming from our government. I think these politics are more vital and more useful than ever, and given the level of attention to these politics, we have to find other ways to struggle and we all have to be in this together and have consciousness about what our sisters and brothers are experiencing.

How do you see these issues impacting on the current #MeToo hashtag movement around sexual assault and harassment?

It’s really good whenever people who are being abused and brutalized speak out. I know there have been criticisms that the reason people are listening to this is because the victims are famous Hollywood women with lots of privilege. I don’t know if that’s a fair assessment of it, but I think it’s important for women and other people to speak out when they are under attack. I think the limitations is about who is believed. Women of color have been saying this for years and have been enduring this for years, but no one would listen because we’re not white and rich and famous. I think that critique is valid. On the other hand, there is a nationwide furor and set of discussions going on about what’s it like to be a woman and subject to the reality of unwanted sexual advances or the threat of them. That’s a good conversation to have.

How do we remain hopeful despite being under attack?

There’s always hope in struggle. You can’t struggle without hope. As long as people are struggling and organizing, there’s hope. In some instances, the scales are falling away from people’s eyes and some are beginning to see how undemocratic, how abusive and how wrong the hatemongering is that we’re experiencing during this period. People want a new way. I’m very excited about the poor people’s campaign that William Barber is co-leading and I’m involved in New York state for a similar campaign. Because I’m involved with struggle, I’m always hopeful.

Study: 11 Percent of African Americans Hope Lottery Wins Will Pay for Kids’ College

Research conducted by insurance company Mass Mutual reveals disturbing insight: Almost 11% of those surveyed about financing an education cited winning the lottery as a means of paying for their kids’ college.

(Image: iStock/ChrisGorgio)

According to learning website ThoughtCo., the chance of winning a Daily 4 or Pick 4 lottery game is 1/1000, or 0.01%. The probability of winning the common lottery game where six numbers are chosen at random is 1 out of 12,271,512.

“MassMutual’s College Planning & Saving Study—African American/Black Families” report offers other insight:

  • 82% of black parents and guardians agree that college is important.
  • 50% believe they will be able to afford college when it’s time to send their kids.
  • African American parents and guardians are the least likely among other ethnic groups to have their kids acquire a student loan.
  • Nearly half surveyed expect their children to receive scholarships.
  • 35% encourage their children to participate in work-study programs.
  • One-fourth surveyed say having their kids attend a community college then transfer to a four-year school is a way to keep college affordable.
  • Four in 10 black parents plan to use Pell Grants to help pay tuition.
  • More than one-third expect to use their own savings; two-thirds began saving when their child turned 10.

Student loan debt is a financial burden across all ethnicities. Recent data shows that the national student loan debt is increasing by $ 2,726.27 every second.

African American students are particularly at risk for financial turbulences due to school loans. Black Enterprise education editor Robin White Good reported that nearly half (49%) of all black student borrowers default on their student loans 12 years after entering college.

Mass Mutual offers three essential tips to pay for kids’ college education:

  1. Apply for scholarships. Look for some available through local community organizations, foundations, corporations, and nonprofit groups. Online tools to help you: FederalStudentAid and TuitionFundingSources.com.

  1. Fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. Completing the form is the first step toward getting financial aid for college, including aid that doesn’t need to be paid back, such as federal grant money. It only takes 30 minutes to complete online and provides access to grants, loans, and work study programs. More information can be found on fafsa.ed.gov.

  1. Encourage monetary gifts (including 529 plan gift cards) from family members and friends to put toward college savings plans.

Hope Solo Accuses Former FIFA President Sepp Blatter of Sexual Assault

Hope Solo, the U.S. women’s national soccer team goalkeeper, has accused former FIFA president Sepp Blatter of sexual assault.

Solo said in an interview with the Portuguese newspaper Expresso that Blatter grabbed her butt during FIFA’s Ballon d’Or awards ceremony in January 2013.

“I had Sepp Blatter grab my ass,” Solo said.”It was at the Ballon D’or one year, right before I went on stage.”

That year, Solo was onstage to present FIFA’s women’s world player of the year to her teammate, the striker Abby Wambach. Blatter joined Solo on stage.

“I was in shock and completely thrown off,” Solo told the Guardian of the alleged assault. “I had to quickly pull myself together to present my teammate with the biggest award of her career and celebrate in that moment, so I completely shifted my focus to Abby.”

A spokesperson for Blatter told the Guardian the “allegation is ridiculous.” Blatter’s attorney and his personal foundation did not immediately respond to TIME’s request for comment. The ex-FIFA president, who resigned from his post in 2015 following a corruption scandal, has publicly made numerous sexist comments, including his 2004 suggestion that women soccer players wear “tighter shorts.”

Last month, Solo joined the #MeToo social media campaign which raised awareness of the prevalence of sexual harassment and assault with an Instagram post commending the women who came forward to accuse Harvey Weinstein of misconduct and detailing similar incidents in the sports world.

“From inappropriate comments, unwanted advances and grabs of the ass to coaches and GMs and even press officers speaking about players’ “tits” and physical appearance, sexual harassment is rampant in the sports world,” Solo wrote. “I always felt I’d “handled it” and stood up for myself in those situations, but there were never any consequences for the perpetrators. That needs to change.”

Solo’s accusation against Blatter comes as several women are speaking up about sexual misconduct. In the wake of the Weinstein scandal, dozens of prominent men have been accused of sexual misconduct, ranging from groping to rape, including former President George H.W. Bush, Louis C.K. and Kevin Spacey.

At toddler time in Las Vegas, a tiny ray of hope

by

Maggie Downs

posted in Parenting

On Thursday I attended a toddler time at a nature preserve, the kind of thing I’ve gone to a hundred times before – a brief storytime followed by an easy craft and a room full of spirited, exuberant kids.

But this time was different.

This time I was a visitor to Las Vegas in the wake of a mass shooting that took place just 9 miles away.

A shot of several casinos and a line of traffic along the Las Vegas Strip

So as families entered the room to the Stevie Wonder song, “Don’t You Worry ‘Bout a Thing,” the lyrics felt steeped with meaning. As the docent read, “The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything,” I couldn’t help but wonder if the title was supposed to transmit a message to the adults in the room. And as parents gave each other hugs that lingered a little too long, I understood.

It’s only by happenstance that I am in Vegas right now, a road trip that was planned a long time ago.

A toddler boy stands against one of the colorful boulders at Seven Magic Mountains, located outside Las Vegas

Of course I never imagined that I would be steering my son around memorials on The Strip or he would see me cry as a message about trauma counselors flashed across the glitzy, sparkly sign at the Mirage. But here I am anyway.

This was the first time many of these parents had seen each other in a week, and the relief was palpable — all these residents of a parched landscape, living in a preposterous desert city that defies the odds to even exist. Though it is a dismal, daunting time, they were here in this room for each other. I didn’t purposely eavesdrop on their conversations; they were just happening around me, and it was touching, intimate, and revealing.

“We just got back from Wisconsin last night,” one mom said.

“Oh good, you weren’t there,” said her friend. “I wondered.”

Another mom seemed to collapse into her friend. She said a mutual friend had been hurt and was critical. The two clung together there, in a room wild with markers and glue, shouts and song, like the calm eye in a fierce storm.

They didn’t clarify what they were talking about. They didn’t have to.

The classic Fabulous Las Vegas sign lit up at night

This community of parents was doing what we all do for our children.

They cloaked the terror and tragedy of the world by speaking around the subject.

Nobody at toddler time mentioned a shooter or guns or terrorism, but it was crystal clear what they were talking about. It was almost as if there was an unspoken code.

These parents also dared to find some semblance of normalcy during a time fraught with fear, anger, and uncertainty. They made their way out into the world, even while the town was still reeling from tragedy, because that’s how a community shows strength and courage.

And here’s the part that fills me with optimism:

They’ll do it next week too. The parents will show up again and again, week after week, bringing children together, in the hope that the future will somehow be better.

How do you navigate current events and tragedies with your children?

MashReads Podcast: Getting nostalgic over hope and change with former Obama speechwriter David Litt

TwitterFacebook

When writer David Litt was 21, he fell in love. This wasn’t romantic love (at least not as part of this story), but he was seriously smitten with a presidential candidate.

Like many people, young and old alike, Litt fell hard and fast for then-candidate Barack Obama. Unlike most people, Litt later worked in the Obama White House, eventually as a speechwriter for the president. And now he’s written a book all about it.

Thanks, Obama: My Hopey, Changey White House Years (A Speechwriter’s Memoir) may have a title nearly as long as the former president’s two terms, but the memoir reads more like a series of stories told by an old college friend over a few beers. Litt, who has a talent for both succinct writing and comedy (he writes for Funny or Die these days), is just as earnest in his retellings as he is realistic. Yes, this is a love story, but it’s also a story of a young man growing up and learning hard truths.  Read more…

The History of the HOPE Charities

The HOPE charity campaign was first introduced in 2015. It was the first of it’s kind for MATT & NAT. Yes, we have always been greatly involved in the community and charity events, but never did we have a whole campaign dedicated to charitable organizations. The success of the first season’s HOPE campaign was remarkable. Raising a little under 70 thousand dollars towards the five charities involved, we had no choice but continue this initiative, designing a new bag, and selecting a few more charities.

With the second season of our HOPE Charity campaign underway, we were interested in learning more about the history behind the charities that are apart of this seasons campaign. As you may already know, we align ourselves with charities and organizations that we feel best represent and share our brand mission and beliefs. Each and every one of the charities we selected is unique in their own way, providing something different with the end result of offering hope and acceptance to the world. Therefore, here is a more information about four of the HOPE charities this season: Wile Tomorrow Fund, Keep A Breast Foundation, Fauna Foundation and Magic Bus, as well as a little about why MATT & NAT decided to do this campaign.

Wild Tomorrow Fund

Five years ago when John Steward was an Executive Creative Director in New York he decided to take a month off work to volunteer for a conservation organization in South Africa. This trip was to become the turning point in his life. Seeing first hand the troubles many species were facing prompted John to leave his corporate career to form Wild Tomorrow Fund.

‘It became almost impossible for me to rekindle my passion for advertising luxury products after seeing rhinos and elephants with their faces hacked off.’ – John Steward, Founder Wild Tomorrow Fund.

Joined by Wendy Hapgood, an ex-Foreign Exchange banker, and ecologists Clinton Wright & Axel Hunnicutt, Wild Tomorrow Fund became an official 501(c)3 non-profit in March 2015.

Since that time they have provided a number of South African reserves with critically needed supplies and equipment. These include anti-poaching uniforms, animal tracking collars, generators, scopes, optic technology, field note books, and pumps. Wild Tomorrow Fund is also conducting on-the-ground scientific research through their two ecologists, and are most recently on the verge of saving 1300 acres of wild land from becoming a pineapple farm.

Keep A Breast Foundation

After a friend was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2000, designer and artist Shaney jo Darden founded the global non-profit organization The Keep A Breast Foundation (KAB) to raise awareness of breast cancer and to encourage prevention and early detection among young people.

Shaney jo is a leading voice in the cultural conversation about breast cancer and her visionary youth-targeted campaigns and programs featuring irreverent messaging, inventive art, cutting-edge pop culture and technology are fueling a paradigm shift among non-profit organizations. The iconic “i love boobies” message, one of KAB’s signature breast cancer outreach and awareness programs, has become a generational staple for the young people she’s reached.

Shaney’s fierce commitment to arming young people with knowledge about breast cancer prevention and awareness has inspired action sports athletes, musicians ranging from punk to pop, and leading contemporary artists to help broadcast the message. KAB’s signature plaster casts of women’s and men’s torsos, hand-painted by world famous artists and auctioned for the cause, help fund the important work she does via events at which she educates thousands.

An expert on breast cancer philanthropy, Shaney jo has received many awards for her innovative fusion of advocacy, art, lifestyle-brand partnerships and street culture, and in the process has generated substantial funds for Keep A Breast via donations, partnerships, and licensing. She is a recipient of the Yoplait Champion Award, the SIMA Humanitarian of the Year Award, the MySpace Impact Award for Health and Safety. And notably, in 2011, Shaney jo delivered the keynote speech for TEDxSanDiego’s “The World in Our Grasp”.

Fauna Foundation

Fauna Foundation provides refuge for 12 chimpanzees outside of Montreal and is the only chimpanzee sanctuary in Canada. Seven of our residents, including matriarch Sue Ellen, are retired from invasive biomedical research and were the first HIV-infected chimpanzees to be released to a sanctuary. Three, including Toby, are from zoos in Quebec. And two, Tatu and Loulis, use sign language and tell us what it’s like to be a chimpanzee. We also provide sanctuary for two rhesus macaques, Darla and Newton, and an olive baboon, Theo, rescued from biomedical research and a Japanese macaque, Eugene, who lived in a pet shop window for 27 years. With historical roots as a farm animal sanctuary, there are remaining bovines, goats, chickens, and a pig also living at Fauna.  Our mission includes sanctuary, outreach in the form on intern and public programming, and conservation with approximately 200 acres of nature preserve in the sanctuary.

Magic Bus

As Krystal Bick mentions in her blog post, Since 1999, Magic Bus has been active in different rural towns in India, helping children break the cycle of poverty through workshops and classes not taught by outside members or Westerners, but youth leaders in their very own community. These youth leaders are trained in a curriculum that uses sport metaphors to enforce essential fundamentals: right to education, gender equality, personal and community healthcare; all building blocks to ensure that these children make informed and healthy decisions about their futures, to not only stay in school but to eventually get full-time jobs once they’re out of the program.

Of course, the numbers alone speak volumes. Of all the youth enrolled in their program, 98% of all the girls continue on to high school and 71% of all the youth graduate high school and enter college — all staggering and unheard of rates given the likes of some of these communities. And like Parvati and much like her colleague Abdul Rehman Shaikh, another graduate and now youth leader in the program, who’s with her today, they continue on to pursue lifelong careers, many of whom eventually return back to their communities to serve.

HOPE-2016-instagram-0

MATT & NAT’s president and CEO, Manny Kohli, is a firm believer in world peace, love and respect. He is also a proud vegan and embodies the MATT & NAT message and beliefs. With the growth of MATT & NAT, Mr. Kohli wants to share this success with the world around him and the HOPE campaign is the perfect way to do so. Together with the whole MATT & NAT team, the HOPE campaign is the best reflection of our ability to bring people together.

Aaron Judge Sizes Up As Baseball’s Best New Hope

Rarely do nachos make dreams come true, no matter how good the guacamole. But while Maria Baez was on her way to a Yankee Stadium concession stand one recent evening, a team employee offered her a spot in the Judge’s Chambers, a section of seats behind the right-field fence reserved for fans of the towering phenom Aaron Judge. Thanks to the young slugger’s head-spinning power at the plate–he entered mid-August leading the American League in home runs despite a recent slump–the invite-only cheering section has become New York City’s most coveted ticket since Hamilton. Clad in a team-issued black robe and waving a foam gavel, Baez was so eager to join the fray that she gave up on her nachos. “I was so excited,” she says, “I didn’t want to eat anymore.”

This is heady stuff for a 25-year-old rookie. But baseball has never seen a player quite like Judge. He is built more like a football or basketball player–indeed, he is the first position player in Major League Baseball to be 6 ft. 7 in. and weigh at least 280 lb. But all of that would amount to little if Judge weren’t also one of the game’s best power hitters. In a season that’s on pace to set a record for home runs, Judge stands out for the distance and ferocity of his blasts. Take, for example, a story that MLB commissioner Rob Manfred recalled to TIME: before the Home Run Derby on July 10, Manfred was discussing with a Miami Marlins executive the ground rules for a ball hitting the roof of the retractable stadium in Miami. The executive said that no one had ever done it before, and stadium engineers had used NASA calculations to determine a roof height that they felt no baseball could possibly reach. As if on cue, Judge, who was taking batting practice, smacked a ball off the ceiling. He did it again during the competition, which he won with an electric display of brawn. “This is the stuff of Paul Bunyan legend,” says Manfred.

Ever since Derek Jeter hung up his spikes in 2014, baseball has thirsted for a transcendent personality with broader cultural resonance. If basketball has LeBron James and Tom Brady carries football, who is baseball’s brightest light? Los Angeles Angels slugger Mike Trout and Washington Nationals star Bryce Harper are far more accomplished than Judge–but neither have fully broken through. Nor do they have the benefit of playing in the nation’s largest media market, for the sport’s most storied franchise.

“I do think it’s important to have a player that fans, no matter what market they’re in, gravitate to as the face of the game,” Manfred says. “We’re in an interesting phase, where we have a really talented group, and people are kind of watching to decide who steps forward to claim that mantle.”

Judge hails from Linden, Calif., a close-knit farming community of about 1,800 people some 40 miles southeast of Sacramento. “There were no strangers in that town,” Judge says of his upbringing. He was raised by adoptive parents, retired teachers Wayne and Patty Judge, and starred in baseball, football and basketball at Linden High School. Notre Dame, UCLA and Stanford wanted him to play football, but he spurned them for a partial scholarship to play baseball at Fresno State. “There was some doubt,” Judge tells TIME. “I thought about going the football route. But I saw myself having fun playing baseball for the rest of my life.”

It was a risky decision. Taller hitters tend to struggle at the plate–one reason that players Judge’s height tend to be pitchers. A longer swing gives tall hitters less time to catch up with fastballs and more chances for mechanical glitches. Judge, however, has a compact motion with little wasted movement. The Yankees drafted him No. 32 overall in 2013 and called him up to the big leagues last August. He slugged a homer in his first at bat, then struggled the rest of the way, hitting just .179.

Turns out that was not a sign. In his first full major-league season, Judge slammed 30 homers before the All-Star break, breaking Joe DiMaggio’s season record for Yankees rookies. He’s hit the four hardest home runs of the season so far, as measured by exit velocity off the bat, as well as the longest: a 495-footer in June. He has helped vault the Yankees into the playoff race and make the team’s games appointment TV. Viewership for Yankees games on the YES Network is up 57% this year.

Like the Yankees’ most recent legend, Judge has taken a studied approach to the spotlight. Even during a second-half slump–as of Aug. 15, Judge had struck out at least once in 32 straight games, tying a major league record–he has remained polite and avoided controversy. “Aaron and Derek carry themselves in a very similar way,” says ESPN analyst Mark Teixeira, who played with Jeter for six seasons.

Judge will let his blasts do the talking. “It’s just like Stephen Curry,” says TBS analyst Gary Sheffield, who spent three seasons with the Yankees in the mid-2000s. “When Curry hits a three-pointer from near half-court, it’s much sexier than a regular three. Aaron Judge is hitting balls to places we’ve never seen.”

If the expectations are weighing on Judge, he’s not letting on. “The big thing for me this year is having blinders on,” says Judge. “It’s tough. There’s a lot of noise. But that’s the thing, you’ve got to be mentally strong enough to fight through that noise.”

The entire sport should be happy if he does.

Think your 3rd grader needs a smartphone? These parents hope you’ll wait

by

Michelle Stein

posted in Parenting

My 6-year-old son is fascinated with technology. That little bugger is always snatching my phone to watch music videos on YouTube, look at my photos, catch Pokémon, send dozens of poop emojis to everyone on my contact list, etc. And he wants nothing more than a smartphone of his very own.

Well, sorry to break it to you, kid. That’s not happening anytime soon. Not until high school.

Thankfully, I’m not the only mean mom. A group of fed-up moms has banded together to create the “Wait Until 8th” pledge, which urges parents to delay giving children smartphones until at least eighth grade. More than 1,300 families from 42 states and over 400 schools have signed the pledge already, in just the first few months.

“Several months ago a group of parents from my daughter’s elementary school in Austin started to discuss the mounting pressure in our community to give children their own smartphones at an early age,” Brooke Shannon, Wait Until 8th founder, told BabyCenter.

“We started seeing children as young as first and second grade coming to school, play dates, and birthday parties with the latest iPhone. We questioned why young children needed this technology. As we started to ask around, many parents said they eventually caved on the smartphone because ‘everyone had them’ and they did not want their child to feel left out.”

The pledge’s website offers a number of convincing reasons parents should get on board. For starters, smartphones are addictive and an academic distraction. Plus they impair sleep, increase the risk of depression, anxiety, and cyber-bullying and they interfere with relationships.

I’m 100-percent behind delaying smartphones until at least eighth grade. Although, as the pledge suggests, I would consider letting my kids have basic phones before then — especially if they are in a bunch of extracurricular activities. Or maybe one of those cool watches that can only text/call pre-selected numbers. My kids get plenty of screen time as it is, thanks to tablets and TV; they don’t need to be connected 24/7 as middle schoolers. (I have a difficult enough time unplugging as an adult!) As Wait Until Eighth points out, “childhood is too short to waste on a smartphone.”

Madeleine McCann’s Parents Still Have ‘Hope’ and Buy Daughter Birthday Presents 10 Years After Her Disappearance

Madeleine McCann‘s parents are speaking out in the wake of news that authorities are investigating a “significant line of inquiry” in the decade-old case.

Kate and Gerry McCann – whose 3-year-old daughter vanished from her family’s rented ground-floor apartment in Portugal on May 3, 2007 – tell British journalist Fiona Bruce in a new interview that they “still hope” Madeleine will be found, according to the U.K.’s Press Association.

“There is progress and there are some very credible lines of inquiry that the police are working on and whilst there’s no evidence to give us any negative news, you know, that hope is still there,” said Kate.

In a statement last week from London’s Metropolitan Police, Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley said a team of four detectives continues to work on “outstanding inquiries” in Madeleine’s disappearance, with aid from their Portuguese counterparts.

“We’ve got some critical lines of inquiry, those link to particular hypotheses, but I’m not going to discuss those because those are very much live investigation,” Rowley said.

The Metropolitan Police opted to reopen and fully fund a new probe into Madeleine’s disappearance in 2013.

• Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Click here to get breaking crime news, ongoing trial coverage and details of intriguing unsolved cases in the True Crime Newsletter.

Madeleine was one week from her fourth birthday when she went missing from the family’s vacation apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal. The little girl had been left with her 2-year-old twin siblings in the unlocked rental while Kate and Gerry dined at a restaurant just 130 feet away.

“No parent is going to give up on their child, unless they know for certain their child is dead, and we just don’t have any evidence,” Gerry – who, along with Kate, was cleared as a suspect in Madeleine’s disappearance – said.

Echoed Kate, “My hope for Madeleine being out there is no less than it was almost 10 years ago. I mean, apart from those first 48 hours, nothing has actually changed since then.”

Both have full faith in the Metropolitan Police’s work: “They’ve managed to pull so much together and sift through so much information, so now we do seem to be on just several lines of enquiry rather than tens/hundreds,” said Kate.

Gerry and Kate said that they’ve tried hard to make life somewhat normal for their twins, Sean and Amelie.

“I think before Madeleine was taken, we felt we had managed to achieve our little perfect nuclear family of five,” said Gerry, adding, “At some point you’ve got to realize that time is not frozen and I think both of us realize that we owed it to the twins to make sure that their life is as fulfilling as they deserve, and we have certainly tried our best to achieve that.”

Still, Madeleine is “always still part of our life,” said Gerry.

“I think every kind of event that we do, whether it be a birthday or a family occasion or even an achievement or something that is kind of when you really feel her absence,” said Kate, adding that she still buys birthday and Christmas presents for her daughter – including for Madeleine’s upcoming 14th.

“I think, that there is still hope really, there isn’t a new appeal, most of the media that we’ve done in the previous years is usually around that – so this is unusual,” said Gerry. “So, we are marking the anniversary. I think it’s been good for the general public to hear police say there’s no evidence that she’s dead, and that there is still an active investigation, and there is still hope. So certainly from my point of view, somebody knows what’s happened.”

Facing A Mixed Orientation Marriage With Gratitude And Hope

Many little girls, often daydream of walking down the aisle, on the most joyous day of their life – their wedding day. Heart racing, nervous smile plastered across her glowing face, never once thinking that the man she’s walking towards is hiding a secret that he’s too afraid to share.

Many young men envision meeting their soulmate, sharing their life with the person of their dreams, having a family, and living the life that’s expected of them – married to a beautiful woman and being a supportive husband and father. Yet some men are torn apart inside by the secret they keep that leads to heart wrenching guilt, shame, and fear of failing everyone they know.

Regardless of the scenario, whether it’s a man or a woman hiding their secret, at some point, the pain of pretending to be someone they’re not becomes greater than the transparent truth of living and being who they’re meant to be.

In that moment, all the years of love, parenting, and life building are diminished to a rubble of memories. Tortured wails of “How could you do this to me?” by an unsuspecting spouse, are just the tip of the betrayal iceberg that sinks the life once known by all concerned.

On the other hand, many couples in a mixed orientation marriage bravely join forces, standing tall in love, vowing to get support for overcoming the wicked temptation of same-sex attraction. Prayer, therapy, retreats, hard work, and tear-stained conversations litter the landscape of a marriage in defense mode, all in the name of “make it work, just make it work!” However, even the most resolute attempts to stay afloat in the life ring of “Until death do us part,” find many couples surrendering to the truth that fixing the same-sex attraction, or fixing it enough, as Matt the husband your about to meet said in his TEDx talk, isn’t going to happen. To quell the truth of a spouse embittered in their own internal tug of war with who they are vs. who the rest of the world expects them to be, is practically a death sentence in and of itself.

While both in-the-know spouses may give a mixed orientation marriage a fair shake, many are faced with the harsh reality, that denying the truth of the same-sex attraction only leads to deeper levels of guilt, shame, anxiety, depression, and more often than not ugly embittered relationships that lead to divorce. Matt and Luanne Nightingale are trying to walk the road less traveled, one of gratitude and hope, for unraveling their 25-year relationship.

Granted, it’s a common, and a completely acceptable, rationale human emotion to want to lash out, be angry, and desire the betrayer, pay, pay, pay for the lies they’ve laden into a 23-year marriage, that never really was the storybook version of the storybook marriage they thought they were living. However, by changing perspectives a little and dramatic shifts of thought, one begins to see the beauty of diversity, if one chooses to do so.

Even though the wounds are still freshly cut, and like many heterosexual spouses, Luanne is getting the raw end of the deal (a justifiable feeling that most heterosexual spouses feel) by having her little girl dreams of happily ever after shattered, the question remains, “Why me, why now, why to begin with?” As understanding, compassionate, and loving as she can be, it doesn’t take away the gut wrenching blow to the heart, self-esteem, and trust that Luann built in her marriage to the man that she loved.

When faced with the harsh truth, Luann and Matt faced eerily similar circumstances and questions that thousands of other same sex couples caught in this mixed-orientation marriage turmoil have faced. Heart-wrenching questions like, “Do we try to make this work?” or “How do we undo the damage, un-tell the lies?” and the ever so popular, “What does the future hold for either of us, our kids, our family?” Yet, they found a path.

Through open, honest, transparent communication, Matt and Luanne have chosen to accept the truth of Matt’s same-sex attraction – him a little more easily, her a little more painfully. Leaning into their relationship built on love, respect, support and brutal honesty, they’re now, in their own words, “Trying to do this well.” The “This well” being, creating an environment for themselves and their children where the family thrives rather than survives as their marriage unravels – she as a single, pained and saddened heterosexual mother, he as a single, excited yet sorrowful, gay father.

While brutal honesty and truth often slice deep into the jugular of life, transparency for being known for who you are is a blessing that eradicates guilt, shame, and self-loathing, opening one’s self, and hopefully others to the light of living truth for truths sake. In the light of Matt’s truth, his real truth, he and Luanne are building a new foundation that embraces the reality that who you are is who you are even though at times it hurts and brings up anger and confusion. However, both Matt and Luann have found that any attempt to fight your truth only compounds the darkness, hurt and pain which in turn, eventually manifests as a person living a pretend life having pretend relationships.

On Saturday, November 6, 2016 Matt and Luanne bravely, both in their own unique way, took the stage at TEDx Sonoma County to share their story, their journey, and their truth – a truth that demonstrates with respect, support, honesty, and a deep dive into forgiveness and understanding that both of them are trying to navigate the waters of unraveling a marriage of deception and lies, with dignity and love.

Selecting gratitude and hope as their guideposts, Matt and Luanne’s TEDx talk demonstrates their ability to find common ground in what could easily be a chaotic war of love gone wrong. Yes. This is their path of choice, but it does beg the question, “What’s possible when gratitude and hope are chosen over bitterness and you done me wrong thoughts?”

“Believe” Delivers Lessons In Faith, Hope and Charity

Movie Review Jackie K Cooper
“Believe” (Freestyle Releasing)

During the holiday season you are going to be bombarded with one “amazing” film after another, or so the studios say. But amid all the hoopla and hollering about these “must see” movies you might overlook a small quiet film that is actually about the Christmas spirit. It is titled “Believe” and it is more uplifting than any of the blockbuster films I have seen in recent days. It doesn’t have an all star cast and there are no superheroes involved. It is just a warmly enjoyable movie that makes you feel good about life.

The film centers on Matthew Peyton (Ryan O’Quinn), a man who has lived his life by the belief that hard work will solve all your problems. That is why it is hard for him to accept that his business is failing and his workers are on strike. He knows he has always done the right thing and has tried to generate income for himself and his community. Still it seems everywhere he turns he is meeting opposition and complete animosity from his friends, employees and neighbors.

The only person he feels he can count on is his childhood friend Dr. Nancy Wells Shawnee Smith), and she appears to be having some doubts. Then one night on his way home he has a flat tire and while he is trying to get it fixed he is jumped by a gang of thugs and beaten severely. His rescuer that night is a boy named Clarence (Isaac Ryan Brown) who gets him home to the apartment he shares with his mother Sharon (Danielle Nicolet).

As Matthew’s story continues the elements of faith, hope and charity rise to the surface. They occur in the situations the movie presents. Some are handed out a bit heavy handedly while others just slide into the story without any grand announcement. Matthew learns that life is more than work and there is room for faith concerning even the most unrealistic hopes.

The breakout star of the movie is Brown. His charm, talent and enthusiasm light up the screen. Just as Clarence the angel lit up “It’s A Wonderful Life”, Clarence the kid lights up “Believe.” O’Quinn, Smith and Nicolet are all believable in their roles but they don’t stand a chance in their scenes with Brown. He is always going to grab the audience’s attention.

The movie is rated PG for mild violence.

There are going to be a lot of movies from which to choose over the holiday season, some really good and some not so good. But if you want to get into the spirit of the season take the time to search out this little movie. It will entertain you and it will lift up your spirits. I’m all for that result.

I scored “Believe” a faithful 7 out of 10.

A Seed of Hope

The world we live in appears so full of upheaval and uncertainty. Turn on the news, pick up a newspaper, and each day seems to bring new revelations of chaos and of man’s simple inhumanity to man.

Who can really be blamed for sometimes thinking that the world itself is going – to use that dangerously unfashionable word – quite mad?

We live, as the Chinese curse goes, in truly interesting times.

With such an atmosphere of uneasiness, a zeitgeist of misgiving and mistrust, where those values we learned to hold dear are being challenged on so many different fronts, it is easy to loose hope, to experience feelings of despondency.

But there is always a reason to hope. Always.

As I child I heard the story of the tiny seed scattered on the ground and seemingly stuck there. Uncaring feet trample on it, driving it down into the dirt, the cold and the wet.

In spite of all this it does what it can. What it must. Its roots reach down into the darkness where nourishment somehow lies. And the smallest of shoots strive tentatively upwards towards the warmth of the sun.

It does not give up and it does not give in. Despite the wind and the rain it continues to grow until it transforms into the tree that stands the test of time, anchored in itself and in the good earth.

If you are feeling down, discouraged, or hopeless, remember that little seed. Resourceful and resilient though it is, you are even more so.

Remember that regardless of what is happening in the world, or in your life, there is always a reason to hope. Find that seed within yourself and you and life will be all right.

‘Hope is being able to see that there is light, despite all of the darkness.’
— Desmond Tutu

The 7 Killers of Hope

Why Hope Doesn’t Float

  1. If you have no gratitude, you’re disappointed
  2. If you have no confidence, you’re doubtful
  3. If you have no faith, you’re pessimistic
  4. If you have no belief, you’re skeptical
  5. If you have no trust, you’re cynical
  6. If you have no respect, you’re disdainful
  7. If you have no forgiveness, you’re bitter

And if you’re disappointed, doubtful, pessimistic, skeptical, cynical, disdainful and bitter, you have no hope… and then you are hopeless.

Inspired by Thad’s self-supporting and hope engendering community where the God they believe in is all inclusive, all forgiving, all loving and even loves evil doers, because occasionally even some of those will see the light.

Hope in a Jar

Hope in a Jar

How did powder and paint, once scorned as immoral, become indispensable to millions of respectable women? How did a “kitchen physic,” as homemade cosmetics were once called, become a multibillion-dollar industry? And how did men finally take over that rarest of institutions, a woman’s business? In Hope in a Jar, historian Kathy Peiss gives us the first full-scale social history of America’s beauty culture, from the buttermilk and rice powder recommended by Victorian recipe books to the mass-produced products of our contemporary consumer age. She shows how women, far from being pawns and victims, used makeup to declare their freedom, identity, and sexual allure as they flocked to enter public life. And she highlights the leading role of white and black women—Helena Rubenstein and Annie Turnbo Malone, Elizabeth Arden and Madame C. J. Walker—in shaping a unique industry that relied less on advertising than on women’s customs of visiting and conversation. Replete with the voices and experiences of ordinary women, Hope in a Jar is a richly textured account of the ways women created the cosmetics industry and cosmetics created the modern woman.
