Kim, Fix My House: Creating a Stylish Bathroom on a Budget

Need inspiration? Check out this bathroom design board I put together for the magazine last year!

Turn your bathroom into a stylish and affordable sanctuary with these simple changes.

SERENITY NOW When imagining the ideal spa, one can’t help but think of the soothing music that so often sets the mood. For the ultimate Pavlovian response, install wireless or Bluetooth speakers in discrete areas of your bathroom to make sure that gentle instrumental tones are always available to enhance your experience.

FLUFF IS THE WORD As tactile creatures, we tend to associate soft, fluffy textures with the pinnacle of high-end indulgence. Splurging on soft, white bath sheets is the first step towards the spa zone. Add a luxurious bath mat, fluffy hand and face towels and you’re on your way to treating your body like royalty. To amp up the comfort level, installing a towel warmer will maximize the enjoyment you receive from all of your new plush accessories. Don’t forget to treat yourself to a cozy bathrobe to take the spa into your bedroom and beyond.

LIT FROM WITHIN To truly capture the spa-like ambience, ensure that your lighting scheme includes various sources and levels of brightness. Layers of lighting create a soft, flattering look and aids in the relaxation promoted in the spa environment. Dimmers will be your best friend in achieving that soothing glow that leads all the way towards an evening soak. Don’t neglect heavenly scented candles to complete the effect.

COLOR ME CALM Sticking to the right color palette will transform your bathroom into a space that inspires tranquility. A neutral color scheme of creamy grays, soft whites or pale blues will calm your nerves and reduce the stresses of the day. Complement the gentle tones with elements from nature like a leafy plant, a shell soap dish, or a wooden tray to further relax the senses.

GO CLEAN The latest trend in the blogosphere is to go through all of your makeup and toiletries to remove anything unhealthy for you or the environment. By ensuring that you only keep the products that are good for you, two goals will have been accomplished. A healthier skincare and makeup regime and a pared down number of items to clutter up your new spa space is ideal. Once only the necessities remain, choose attractive straw or clear acrylic containers to store things in the most pleasing way possible.

House of Cards Has a Fourth of July Message From the New President Underwood

This Fourth of July, the new President Underwood wants you to give thanks to… her.

Robin Wright returns as newly minted Commander-in-Chief Claire Underwood in the new promo for House of Cards‘ final season.

“Happy Independence Day… to me!” she says in the video, released on July 4. This was followed by “#MyTurn,” noting it’s finally Claire’s turn to take the White House after five seasons of Frank Underwood fighting for the throne.

The sixth and last season of the Netflix drama began production earlier this year ahead of an expected premiere this year. Season 5 finished with Frank stepping down as President of the United States with Claire stepping up in his place.

Kevin Spacey was supposed to return for the final season, but the sexual assault allegations against him from multiple men, including actor Anthony Rapp, prompted his firing. (Spacey apologized to Rapp, but stated he didn’t remember the alleged encounter. He denied other allegations and announced in November that he was seeking “evaluation and treatment.”)

Now season 6 will focus on Claire. Wright will be joined by Greg Kinnear, Diane Lane, Michael Kelly, Jayne Atkinson, Patricia Clarkson, Constance Zimmer, Derek Cecil, Campbell Scott, Boris McGiver, and Cody Fern.

How to Rent a Room in Your House

If your home has extra space, including a spare bedroom, you may have considered renting it out to a tenant. Given that the space likely remains empty throughout most of the year, there’s no reason not to rent it out and make some additional money every month.

Renting a room, however, isn’t as easy as posting a room rental ad on Craigslist. In this post, we cover some important questions to ask yourself before you decide to rent a room in your house and where to start if you decide to do so.

Find Out if Renting a Room is Right for You

Before you decide to rent a room in your house, it’s a good idea to determine if it’s a right fit for you, the members of your household, and your house itself.

Some questions you may want to ask yourself before advertising a room for rent could include:

Do you have enough space for another person?

You may have an extra bedroom, but if you have a small kitchen, one bathroom, and a tiny living room, things could get congested (and people could get cranky), which means you may want to rethink your decision simply due to lack of space.

Do you live with others who should be consulted before a tenant moves in?

Perhaps you have sole ownership of your house but live with your two teenage children. Although they cannot legally prevent you from renting a room to a tenant, you may want to gain their approval in order to maintain stability in the home. If not, you may find yourself in the middle of an awkward, unprofessional situation when your unhappy teens start making snarky comments to your tenant.

Do you have places in your home you would forbid a tenant from entering?

When you rent a room, you don’t necessarily have the luxury of a separate entrance, which means you’ll have to consider how valuable your own privacy is before deciding to rent out a chunk of your home.

For instance, if you have sensitive work information on your computer and no lock on your home office door, you may want to reconsider renting until you invest in a more secure room for your valuable workstation.

Create the Proper Rental Agreement

When you live with your tenants, it can be easy to underestimate the issues that can potentially occur. After all, you’re living inside the home; what could your tenant possibly do, especially in front of you, that could negatively impact your living situation?

In truth, renting anything—a room, house, or apartment—without an agreement is not a good idea. Agreements ensure all parties understand their rights and obligations and can help ease any conflicts that may arise in the future.

For a room rental, a proper Residential Lease is essential. It will safeguard your property and make sure the tenant knows all the important details of their living arrangement, including how much rent they must pay, what part of the property they can access, and more.

In addition, there are aspects of shared living that you may want to address when renting a room, which you could add to your agreement, if it isn’t there already (with LawDepot’s Lease Agreement, this can be done by adding an additional clause). For instance, you may want to consider:

  • House rules and repercussions: are there any specific rules you want to address, and what happens if a rule is not followed?
  • House chores: how will things like household cleaning be divvied between you and your tenant?
  • Parties: what constitutes a party as opposed to a formal gathering?
  • Guests: how long can a guest stay in the home, and can guests stay overnight?
  • Smoking: can tenants smoke indoors, and if not, where can they smoke outside?
  • Pets: can tenants have a pet on the premises, and if so, do you want them to pay a pet deposit or fee to cover any damages the pet may potentially cause?

Without rules, a positive living situation can turn sour in a heartbeat, so it is important to address them at the start of the tenancy.

Know Your Landlord Rights and Obligations

A typical rental situation involves various landlord rights and obligations, including:

  • How repairs will be handled
  • When the landlord can legally enter the tenant’s space (i.e. by using a Notice to Enter)
  • How pests and other problems such as late rent payments will be dealt with

For a room rental, landlord-tenant rights and obligations can blur a little.

For instance, if you are renting a room in your house to a friend, it may seem okay to knock or open their bedroom door to check if they have left for work for the day. However, your tenant has a right to privacy from their landlord, which may include impromptu or too-frequent visits.

Overall, it may be a good idea to set boundaries early on, such as which landlord-tenant interactions are acceptable or not.

Preparing to Rent a Room in Your House

Not everyone has the patience and diplomacy to live with another person, let alone a tenant, which is why you should always start by determining if you can handle a renter in your space before you decide to move forward.

After this, maintaining a positive living situation is a matter of creating the appropriate agreement, knowing and asserting your rights as a landlord, and understanding and committing to your obligations to the tenant.

Expert Tips for Selecting the Right House Plan

The Winchester plan offers a great open
concept kitchen and family room for informal
entertaining and a separate dining room for
more formal events!

It can be a little overwhelming to decide between so many fantastic options so we asked Diego Rizzardo of SanDiego Homes to share some of the tips he uses to help homeowners pick the best home plan for their lot at their Lakeside Living community in Innisfil!

LIFESTYLE Consider the daily needs, activities and hobbies of those who will live there. If you love to cook, a kitchen with plenty of pantry and workspace is a must. If you are a fitness buff, choose a plan that allows space for a gym. If you work from home, you will need space for a home office. Another important aspect is your entertaining style. “If you often have a large number of guests, a flexible, open concept space is a must,” says Diego. “If you prefer a more intimate setting, you may want a plan like The Winchester that has a separate, formal dining space.” You will also want to consider bedroom space if guests often stay overnight.

The Strathmore plan offers bungalow style living
with plenty of space for guests, perfect for
those who love to entertain and want a home
that will allow them to age in place.

CURRENT AND FUTURE NEEDS It is important to consider how your needs may change over the next 5-10 years. A newlywed couple may feel that a two bedroom plan is perfect for them but if they plan to have children in a few years, they will outgrow that plan quite quickly. For older homeowners, it is important to consider future health and mobility needs. “We offer a variety of bungalow style plans that will allow homeowners to age in place without costly renovations down the road,” says Diego. “Wide hallways are also standard in all models to ensure ease of mobility.” A main floor laundry, master bedroom and bathroom may not seem like a necessity right now but may greatly affect your ability to live independently in the home later in life!

PROPERTY AND LOCATION The lot you are building on and the surrounding area may also affect your decision. How will the position of the sun and wind direction affect the home? What is located on each side of the property? Large windows that take in a beautiful view of the sunset are great but those same windows facing the side of the neighbor’s home are much less enjoyable. “Choose a plan that will take advantage of the best aspects of your property.” says Diego, “But also consider available outdoor space and choose a plan that leaves space for outdoor entertaining, gardening or other outdoor activities you enjoy.”

Bravo’s ‘Top Chef’ Stars Celebrate Juneteenth at the James Beard House

Each year, the James Beard House hosts over 200 dinners featuring select world-class chefs who prepare unique tasting menus for guests. However, on Monday, four famed African American cooks from Bravo’s hit reality competition series Top Chef took over the esteemed Beard House kitchen for an unprecedented Juneteenth celebration that honored African American food and culture.

The private dinner was held in New York City at The James Beard Foundation, a nonprofit culinary arts organization named in honor of prolific food writer and cookbook author James Beard, a.k.a. the “Dean of American Cookery.” It was dedicated to the observance of the Juneteenth Independence Day, a nationally recognized holiday that marked the end of slavery for African Americans in Texas and other parts of the South on June 19, 1865. Although slaves were legally free after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, it took two years before the news traveled to all parts of the country. As a result, African American slaves were still working on plantations as late as 1865, while 250,000 people were still enslaved in Texas until Union soldiers traveled to Galveston, Texas, to announce that all enslaved people were free.

At the dinner, the chefs presented a collaborative menu inspired by black southern cuisine and their own roots. In addition to paying homage to his ancestors, Chef Chris Scott said the event allowed him to tell “a story of our people through food.” Some of the dishes he made included hoecakes, which date back to the 18th century, and scrapple, a dish that his grandmother used to make consisting of hog offal. However, it was his grandmother’s famous honey butter biscuits that won the night. “In a million years, my grandmother would have never thought that her biscuits would be served at the Beard House on this kind of night,” he told guests following the dinner.

“A lot of chefs are turning back to their roots, especially black folks,” Scott told Black Enterprise in an interview. “All of us are classically trained in French style, Spanish cuisine, and a lot of European cooking methods, but now we’ve come to a point where we’re turning the curve and we’re coming back home, cooking the food of our ancestors, cooking the food that we grew up on.”

Chef Adrienne Cheatham told BE that cooking Juneteenth-inspired dishes at the prestigious James Beard House was an honor that affirms that soul food deserves the same recognition as other acclaimed fares around the world. “James Beard House is acknowledging Juneteenth. That’s a holiday that has been big among black people for years, but it’s never been recognized by a major institution,” said the Top Chef season 15 runner-up.

Chef Brother Luck, the owner of Four By Brother Luck in Colorado, called the Juneteenth dinner a celebration of diversity. “As someone who’s worked my way up from the bottom, it’s really special to be here tonight.” He also touched on his own Cajun and Creole heritage, saying, “If you look at southern cuisine and Cajun and Creole soul food, it was about making the best of what you had and adapting.”

Check out the Juneteenth dishes in the slideshow below.

‘Legally Blonde 3’: Why We Need Elle to Take Over the White House

The original feminist icon is back! MGM recently announced that, after 15 years, Elle Woods is finally returning to the big screen with the third installment of the amazing Legally Blonde saga. The film is set to open on Valentine’s Day, 2020.

After becoming the most fabulous lawyer at Harvard in the first movie and then finding her way into Washington politics in the sequel, what’s the next step for our pink heroine to take? Well, it’s pretty obvious that we are looking at the next President of the United States of America.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous President of the United States

The race to the white house won’t be easy for our heroine.
The race to the White House won’t be easy for our heroine.

Reese Witherspoon’s character has seen a lot of growth since the first Legally Blonde film. She evolved from a conceited rich white girl into an empowered woman who does everything her own way without compromising her ideals.

The last scene of Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde clearly points us in the direction of the White House. But while it may seem like the next logical step in the franchise, the race to for the presidency won’t be an easy one for our heroine.

But, what exactly should we expect from this third installment?

The White House Definitely Needs a Touch of Pink

Elle will have to work twice as hard as her opponent(s) to prove to the masses, the politicians and even to herself that she deserves to be the next POTUS.
Elle will have to work twice as hard as her opponent(s) to prove to the masses, politicians, and even to herself that she deserves to be the next POTUS.

Even when the Legally Blonde franchise is seen as comedy, the writers behind it have always found a way to shed some light on social issues like female empowerment, unethical treatment of animals, and even the LGBTQ community.

But while the actual plot is still unknown, if the movie were to play it smart, the best thing to do would be to show Elle as a mature and smart congresswoman who decides to become the next President of the United States to fight social injustice.

Our heroine will likely discover that women are not easily accepted in positions of power. She’ll have to work twice as hard as her opponent(s) to prove to the masses, other politicians, and even to herself that she deserves to be the next president. And Elle’s husband, Emmet, will need to be 200% more supportive to help tackle all the things Elle is going to face.

A stereotypical misogynistic male politician is probably going to be the villain of choice for Legally Blonde 3. As such, he will probably try to show that Elle, just by being a woman, is less capable than him of being president. He will probably oppose her with everything he has, including dirty, underhanded, and potentially unethical tactics.

The Social Relevance of a Modern Elle Woods

For Elle to be relevant she will need to be more mature and appealing to newer and more critical audiences.
For Elle to be relevant she will need to be more mature and appeal to newer and more critical audiences.

While strong female movie icons like Ellen Ripley and Sarah Connor have surfaced in the past, recent years have seen a refreshing lineup of kickass women like Wonder Woman, Okoye, Lara Croft, and Dr Elizabeth Shaw. However, these great role models and examples of empowered women, sci-fi heroines, and superheroes aren’t examples that everyone can follow because of their particular, and sometimes fictional, careers.

In an era where social campaigns like #MeToo and #BlackLivesMatter are a reality many decide to ignore, a real and approachable feminist icon who works hard to achieve her goals with sheer determination and will is as important as it could ever be.

Elle has never shied away from hard work, confronting powerful men and getting her point across. And that’s definitely the kind of president most of us would love to see gracing our screens.

Is Legally Blonde 3 Too Late?

Legally Blonde 3 has definitely a lot of potential, but it will have to go big or go home.
‘Legally Blonde 3’ definitely has a lot of potential, but it will have to go big or go home.

Even as this sequel comes more than 15 years late, many factors can instill new life into the iconic franchise. A good script and a more realistic and approachable characterization of Elle Woods are going to be the most important elements that will make or break the film.

First and foremost, the cast in this one is also going to be pivotal. Some of the old tropes that previous films relied on, like the dumb blonde or the flamboyantly gay guy, aren’t going to fly this time around. These stereotypes will look bad in the eyes of an audience with high hopes for the movie but who are also more aware and critical of these problematic elements in Hollywood. Likewise, if writers tackle social issues, fans will expect diverse representation of queer, black, and Latino social fighters too.

Not least important is that the movie is to be released in the year of the next US presidential elections. As if that wasn’t enough, the film will also compete against unnamed projects by DC and Disney as well as Nimoma.

Legally Blonde 3 clearly has a lot of potential. But the movie will have to go big and make the right decisions or go home without a chance.

Stephen Colbert Is Convinced He Knows Why Trump Disinvited the Philadelphia Eagles From the White House

It’s a long-standing tradition that Super Bowl champions are invited to the White House to meet the president. This year, though, Donald Trump rescinded the invitation to the reigning champs, the Philadelphia Eagles. Trump canceled the visit from the Eagles, because some players “disagree with their President because he insists that they proudly stand for the National Anthem,” he said in a statement Monday evening.

There’s just a small thing that Colbert wanted the president to consider one thing about his rescinded invitation to the Super Bowl champions. “Here’s the thing: no Eagles players took a knee or stayed in the locker room during the anthem last season,” Colbert pointed out on Tuesday night’s episode of The Late Show. “So Donald Trump is blaming a group of black guys for something they didn’t do. They’ll have to rename the Eagles the ‘Central Park 53’.” The last jab was a reference to the fact that Trump believes that the five black and Hispanic teenagers who became known as the “Central Park Five” are guilty, despite their exoneration.

Colbert also called out Fox News, who “never lets the truth get in the way of a good story” ran images of the Eagles’ players taking a knee alongside a story about the rescinded invitation. That wasn’t what the picture showed, though. “Eagles tight end Zach Ertz pointed out on Twitter that was actually footage of him ‘praying before games with his teammates well before the anthem.’ Come on, look, look. It‘s an honest mistake: Fox News also thought this picture was Jesus calling a touchdown!”

‘No One Wants the Invite Anyway.’ LeBron James and Steph Curry Say Their Teams Won’t Visit White House

(CLEVELAND) — Stephen Curry and LeBron James spoke their minds last year. They have not changed their minds this year.

No matter whose team wins the NBA championship, neither superstar will be at the White House anytime soon.

On the day when the Philadelphia Eagles were supposed to be there to commemorate winning the Super Bowl — a visit that was canceled by President Donald Trump and had the White House accusing players who weren’t planning on attending of abandoning their fans — Curry and James were among those speaking out at the NBA Finals in support of the Eagles.

“I’m not surprised. It’s typical of him,” James, the Cleveland star, said of Trump’s decision to cancel. “I know no matter who wins this series, no one wants the invite anyway. So it won’t be Golden State or Cleveland going.”

On the eve of Game 3 of the Warriors-Cavaliers series, politics dominated the conversation.

Curry raised Trump’s ire last year when he said he wouldn’t go to the White House, prompting the President to disinvite him and the champion Golden State Warriors.

Curry said Tuesday that he spoke with a current Eagles player about the team’s decision-making process and how it went deeper than disagreeing with Trump policies and the ongoing issue of some NFL players choosing not to stand for the pregame playing of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

“It’s an important conversation, but you can’t control what other people try to do, or try to control the narrative or things like that,” Curry said.

Curry said the team has been on the same page after his comments last year and Trump’s subsequent revoking of the Warriors’ invitation. “And every team that’s won a championship since then has gone through that.”

There has been clear tension between many star athletes and the current administration throughout the Trump presidency. Trump has often blasted the NFL players who have kneeled for the national anthem, a protest that started in 2016 when San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick did so to protest racism and more specifically the killing of black men by police.

Trump said the Eagles’ event was called off because some of their players “disagree with their President because he insists that they proudly stand for the National Anthem, hand on heart, in honor of the great men and women of our military and the people of our country.”

No Eagles players kneeled during the anthem last season.

“Instead the decision was made to lie, and paint the picture that these players are anti-America, anti-flag and anti-military,” the Eagles’ Malcolm Jenkins wrote in a statement posted to social media Tuesday .

The WNBA champion Minnesota Lynx haven’t been invited to celebrate their most recent title, something James called “laughable.” Villanova, the reigning NCAA men’s champion, has not revealed if an invitation was sent. Many members of the U.S. Olympic Team that competed earlier this year in South Korea did not attend a White House reception.

Hockey’s Pittsburgh Penguins and baseball’s Houston Astros have accepted invitations to the White House for the traditional meeting with the President in recent months, as have several college teams. When the New England Patriots went last year, half the team chose not to attend.

The Warriors, in lieu of going to the White House, spent that day taking a group of children to the National Museum of African American History and Culture a few miles away.

“I think the President has made it pretty clear he’s going to try to divide us, all of us in this country, for political gain,” said Golden State coach Steve Kerr, who has often criticized Trump and his policies. “So it’s just the way it is. I think we all look forward to the day when we can go back to just having a celebration of athletic achievement and celebrate Americans for their achievement, their good deeds.”

Kerr also lauded the Eagles for being what he called “fantastic citizens in their own community.”

“It will be nice when we can just get back to normal in three years,” Kerr said.

The overwhelming issue surrounding the Eagles’ planned visit was that most of the team was not going to attend, and that was a major factor in Trump deciding to pull the invitation.

“What else do you expect Trump to do?” Golden State’s Kevin Durant said. “When somebody says they don’t want to come to the White House, he disinvites them. So the photo op don’t look bad. We get it at this point. But it’s good that guys are sticking to what they believe in and what they want to do. Like guys said before me, I’m sure whoever wins this series won’t be going.”

NFL Players Association Responds as President Trump Criticizes Eagles Players for Snubbing White House

The union representing NFL players expressed disappointment in President Donald Trump’s decision to disinvite the Philadelphia Eagles from the traditional championship celebration at the White House on Tuesday – as Trump criticized the players in a series of tweets.

“NFL players love their country, support our troops, give back to their communities and strive to make America a better place,” the NFL Players Association said in a statement Tuesday morning.

Trump canceled the visit from the Super Bowl-winning team because some players “disagree with their President because he insists that they proudly stand for the National Anthem,” he said in a statement Monday evening.

Trump said the fans who planned on attending the ceremonial event “deserve better” than the small delegation of players. In place of the ceremony Tuesday, the White House will instead have the United States Marine Band and the United States Army Chorus deliver a rendition of the “Star Spangled Banner.”

The President took to Twitter Tuesday to reiterate his criticism of the players who refused to visit the White House. The Philadelphia Inquirer cited team sources as saying that fewer than 10 Eagles players had planned to attend the White House ceremony.

“Staying in the Locker Room for the playing of our National Anthem is as disrespectful to our country as kneeling. Sorry!” he tweeted

In a statement that did not address the White House or the president, the Eagles said: “It has been incredibly thrilling to celebrate our first Super Bowl Championship. Watching the entire Eagles community come together has been an inspiration.”

Following their Super Bowl win earlier this year, several players — including safety Malcolm Jenkins, defensive end Chris Long and wide receiver Torrey Smith — said they would not attend the White House event if invited. As TIME has detailed, no players from the Eagles or their Super Bowl LII opponents, the New England Patriots, protested the national anthem when it played at the February match-up. During the season, the only sign of protest from the Eagles came when Smith and Long raised their fists in the air during the anthem.

Trump repeatedly attacked the NFL and players for protesting during the National Anthem last season. At a campaign-style event last fall, the President said NFL owners should fire any players who protest. “Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, “Get that son of a bitch off the field right now. Out. He’s fired. He’s fired!” Trump said at the time.

Last month, the NFL implemented a new policy that says teams will be fined if players do not “stand and show respect for the flag” during the National Anthem. Players would be allowed to stay in the locker room, during the anthem, however. The NFL Players Association has said it would challenge the new rule.

The anthem protests in the NFL began before Trump took office. Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick was the first athlete to kneel during the National Anthem several years ago to protest injustices faced by people of color in America. The sign of protest grew throughout the NFL — and into other professional leagues like the NBA and into amateur ones like high school sports leagues.

The Eagles aren’t the only professional team to be at odds with Trump. The President disinvited Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry from his championship-winning team’s White House visit last fall when he showed signs he was “hesitating.” (Curry had told reporters he did not want to go.) As a result, the entire NBA Championship-winning team chose not to go.

“We believe there is nothing more American than our citizens having the right to express themselves freely on matters important to them,” the Warriors said in a statement.

White House Says Philadelphia Eagles ‘Unable’ to Attend Super Bowl Celebration Because They ‘Disagree’ With Trump on the National Anthem

A newly released statement by the White House on Tuesday says that the full Philadelphia Eagles team is “unable” to attend the White House celebration honoring their Super Bowl LII win over the New England Patriots.

The statement says that the Eagles “disagree with their President because he insists that they proudly stand for the National Anthem,” and that the 1,000 fans who are planning to attend the event “deserve better.”

Championship NFL teams traditionally visit the White House for an annual event honoring their Super Bowl win. But this year the on-going controversy over whether NFL players can kneel during the National Anthem has engulfed the league in a political firestorm.

A national debate about athletes standing during the anthem began last year when former San Francisco 49’s quarterback Colin Kaepernick became the first NFL athlete to kneel during the anthem to protest the treatment of racial minorities in the U.S. Kapernick’s gesture started a movement that saw other NFL players and athletes begin to kneel as well.

President Donald Trump has previously expressed his disdain towards athletes who kneel during the anthem, tweeting about it numerous times, but the White House celebration for the Eagles was scheduled as usual.

The controversy was reignited again in May, when the NFL announced its decision to fine teams if players choose to kneel during the anthem, a move that the NFL Players Association has said it will challenge.

Some Eagles players had already said they would skip the White House celebration, citing the president’s vocal criticism of players who choose to kneel. The players who originally declined to attend are Malcom Jenkins, Torrey Smith and Chris Long.

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy Blasts Google for Linking California GOP to Nazism

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy slammed Google on Thursday for listing “Nazism” as one of the ideologies of the California Republican Party.

“Dear @Google, This is a disgrace,” McCarthy tweeted along with an image of a Google search result showing Nazism as an ideology of the California GOP.

In another tweet, McCarthy also called the results “the latest incident in a disturbing trend to slander conservatives.”

The reference to Nazism appeared in Google’s “knowledge panel,” which offers summarized search results drawn from a number of sources including Wikipedia. The results changed to eliminate the ideologies during the day on Thursday, according to Vice News, after the website reached out to ask Google about the controversy.

A Google spokesperson told the site it does not politicize search results and that the “Nazism” listing for the California Republican Party was not implemented by a Google employee.

“We regret that vandalism on Wikipedia briefly appeared on our search results. This was not the the result of a manual change by Google,” a Google Communications account tweeted in response to McCarthy. “We have systems in place that catch vandalism before it impacts search results, but occasionally errors get through, and that happened here.”

Still, other conservatives expressed anger at the situation as well. Donald Trump Jr. tweeted his displeasure, and linked the Google results to another tech complaint he had this month. He told his followers last week that Instagram provided a warning message saying posts with his name often “encourage” harmful behavior.

This latest tech controversy comes shortly after the Republican National Committee and President Donald Trump’s reelection committee sent a letter May 17 asking Facebook and Twitter to address political bias on their social media platforms.

I didn’t know how noisy our house was until I got hearing aids

by

Laura Falin

posted in Life

I’m pretty sure I’ve had hearing loss for most of my adult life.

It’s a genetic thing in my family. Although I can’t be certain exactly when it set in, for as long as I can remember, I’ve had to ask people to speak up. When I had a desk job, I always went to other people’s offices to chat, or called them on the phone because I knew talking across the room was futile. I drove my husband a little nuts for years, asking him to repeat himself every time he talked. I’ve had at least one embarrassing conversation where I didn’t want to keep asking someone to say the same thing over, so I smiled and nodded and she looked horrified and wandered off. I’m dying to know what I agreed to.

Pretty sure he said, “I do” just before this. I mean I’m, like, 98 percent certain he did…

After a trip to visit family where we all watched TV together and I couldn’t hear a single thing, I made an appointment with an audiologist, where I discovered that 1) I did, in fact, need hearing aids and 2) they’re not usually covered by insurance. It’s important to note that they are usually covered for children, so please don’t let that stop you if your child needs them. We adults, however, are on our own and those suckers are expensive.

I decided it was cheaper to keep saying “what?” to everyone who talked to me instead of getting them.

In the meantime, we had four children. They’re creative and boisterous and used to having to speak up so I can hear them. They all play musical instruments, which began at 2 years old with them banging enthusiastically on pots and pans. I was so proud.

Sometimes my husband would snap at all the noise, or disappear to our room, or just go stand outside for a few minutes alone, and I always rolled my eyes at his dramatics.

I am sorry to tell you that Kazoo Season was before I got hearing aids. Poor me.

And then through a series of fortunate events I ended up with a lovely pair of hearing aids.

I put them in at the audiologist’s office, where we had the following conversation:

Me: “No. These are too loud. I hear your air conditioning and everything.”
Her: “Yep! That’s just right. These are all sounds you should be hearing.”
Me: “But…I hear myself chewing gum in my own mouth. Ew. It sounds weird and squishy.”

After a few more rounds, she halfway convinced me that these are noises everyone hears all the time. She let me go with stern warnings to keep my new devices on all day long so I could adjust.

I got in the car and almost peed myself when the radio came on at my old volume. I freaked out when I heard my seatbelt click. And I started to realize exactly how many noises I hadn’t been hearing that were going to come rushing at me now.

And then the kids came home.

I picked them up, one at a time, after school. I had a fun conversation with my oldest first. We played a game where he asked things quieter and quieter and I kept yelling, “Yep!! Still hear you! Whatever you used to say under your breath when you were mad at me before — watch it now, buddy, because I HEAR EVERYTHING!! Muahahahahaaaa!” When the second kid joined us, I listened to her tell me about her day without once asking her to repeat herself. I actually teared up.

And then another one got in the car. And another. By the time we pulled into the driveway, everything had blended into one giant cacophony of sound and I couldn’t process it all. Everyone tumbled out of the van in search of snacks, and I just sat there for five minutes without moving. I came inside to find my husband grinning and asking, “How is everyone?” “They. Are. So. Loud.” was all I could manage and of course he did that told-you-so look without saying anything while I stood there in a daze.

I lasted about an hour that day. When I pulled out my hearing aids, my husband mouthed “CHEATER” at me…or maybe he said it out loud. I don’t know. Either way, I couldn’t hear him.

These days, I’m trying to be good. I keep the hearing aids in most days until about 5 p.m., but that’s as long as I can manage. It’s actually a combination of the sound and the fact that it feels so gooooood to take them out. It’s like taking off your bra at the end of the day, I swear to you. I make sure to have them in for school plays and concerts, or when I’ll be out with friends or having conversations with people. I’m trying to work on keeping them in until bedtime but I don’t think I’ve made it that far yet. I know I’m lucky that I have the option of hearing things better when a lot of people do not.

But maybe I’m kind of lucky to have the option to turn down the volume sometimes as well.

Do you have a noisy house? How do you handle it?

How A $2 Act of Defiance Could Bring Waffle House To Its Knees

A nationwide boycott of Waffle House set for Friday has now been issued by the Atlanta branch of Black Lives Matter. As part of the boycott, protesters are being asked to stage a $ 2 sit-in at Waffle House restaurant locations around the country, according to AL.com. Protesters will spend $ 2 on a soda and will consume the beverage at tables and counters in the Waffle House restaurants during peak business hours.

More than a week after 23-year old Chikesia Clemons was violently arrested at one of its locations in Alabama, Waffle House officials are still siding with their own employees saying they called the cops out of “concern for their own safety.” On Monday, company officials invited into its headquarters civil rights advocates including a representative from the NAACP and Black Lives Matter, to view an unedited version of a security tape they purport shows Clemons being belligerent.

Lamar Howard, Clemons’ stepfather told ABC News that Waffle House staff had called police after she refused to pay $ 0.50 cents for plastic spoons and had requested a corporate phone number to lodge a complaint. “She’s owed an apology, just like the two men in the Starbucks,” Howard said.

Early in April, Rashon Nelson and Donte Robinson, both 23-year old entrepreneurs, walked into a Philadelphia Starbucks where they sat, waiting for a business meeting. Nelson immediately asked to use the restroom and the manager insisted something must be purchased to get access to utilize the bathroom. According to 911 accounts, Starbucks staffers had called the police approximately two minutes after the men arrived. In an all too familiar scene, Nelson and Robinson were told to leave the store and when they refused, they were handcuffed and arrested in a video that has gone viral.

Both Nelson and Robinson reached a settlement with the city for $ 1 each, with a $ 200,000 commitment to a youth entrepreneurship program, according to the New York Daily News.

In Clemons’ case, she was slammed to the ground by three Saraland Police officers, as her breasts were exposed while she was being handcuffed.

“When I saw the video, it was very inhumanely done,” Penny Poole, a member of the Gwinnett County NAACP, told reporters.

Saraland Police Department held a press conference last week defending the actions of the three officers. According to Detective Brian Mims, Clemons and her friend Canita Adams, had an alcoholic beverage with them when they came into the Waffle House restaurant to which Waffle House staffers told them they couldn’t have. Mims said the situation escalated with Clemons becoming “loud and using profanity toward the employee.” He said both Clemons and Adams threatened employees, and according to a witness, one of them said, “I can come back and shoot this place up if I need to.”

Coincidentally, the incident occurred on April 22, the same day Travis Reinking shot up a Waffle House restaurant in Nashville, Tennessee killing four. The security tape, which could have clarified exactly what happened and what was said during the entire confrontation did not include an audio.

Why Adam Rippon, Lindsey Vonn and More Winter Olympics Stars Skipped the White House Visit With Trump

President Donald Trump hosted American athletes who competed at the 2018 Winter Olympics and Paralympics at the White House on Friday — but some of the PyeongChang games’ most famous faces opted to skip the ceremony.

Ice skater Adam Rippon, skier Lindsey Vonn and snowboarder Chloe Kim are among the marquee names who skipped the trip to Washington. Five American Olympians — including cross-country skier Jessie Diggins, freestyle skier David Wise and biathlete Maddie Phaneuf — made the trip to Washington to meet with Congressional leaders on Wednesday about their climate change advocacy work with Protect Our Winters Alliance. But they won’t attend the White House celebration because they made the “Congressional briefing their priority,” a spokesperson for the athletes told USA Today.

Some athletes cited Trump’s politics as their reason for skipping the White House meeting, while others said they had scheduling conflicts. Almost 200 athletes were expected to attend the event, according to the Washington Post.

President Trump did not mention the absences in his remarks at Friday’s event. Instead, he lauded some of the other athletes in attendance, including figure skater Vincent Zhou, the gold medal-winning women’s hockey team and the men’s curling team, which also took home gold at the 2018 Olympics.

Here are some of the big names —including Adam Rippon, Lindsey Vonn and Chloe Kim — who chose to skip the 2018 Winter Olympics celebration at the White House this year:

Adam Rippon

Rippon, a 2018 TIME 100 honoree and the first openly gay American athlete to qualify for the Winter Olympics, told TIME last month that he wouldn’t attend.

“This Administration ran on a platform of fear. I don’t think that’s any way for us to live. I would never want my sister to be spoken to the way Donald Trump has spoken to women. I would never want anyone to talk to my mother that way. And my mother would never tolerate one of her sons doing that, either. I think we can do better,” Rippon said.

The figure skater, who won a bronze medal as a member of the U.S. figure skating team in PyeongChang, famously said he didn’t want to meet with Vice President Mike Pence before the 2018 Olympics and criticized the Vice President’s views on gay marriage.

Vonn, who won a bronze medal in PyeongChang in downhill skiing, told CNN in December 2017 that she would “absolutely not” go to the White House after the 2018 Olympics, which took place in February.

“Well I hope to represent the people of the United States, not the president,” Vonn told CNN at the time. “I want to represent our country well. I don’t think that there are a lot of people currently in our government that do that.”

Chloe Kim

Kim, the 17-year-old snowboarding sensation who won a gold medal at the 2018 Olympics, also didn’t attend Friday’s ceremony. She told the Washington Post she had a wedding to attend.

Kim, who was also a 2018 TIME 100 honoree, has spoken out about causes aligned against Trump in the past. In March, she tweeted her support for March for Our Lives, the massive gun control rally organized by the survivors of the deadly Parkland, Fla. shooting earlier this year.

Freestyle skier Kenworthy, who is also openly gay, opted not to make the trip to Trump’s White House.

Kenworthy has spoken out about Trump in the past, telling TIME in July 2017: “I think we had been two steps forward with Obama. And it’s a step back with the Trump administration.”

Hamlin, who served as the flag bearer for Team USA in the 2018 Opening Ceremony, didn’t attend Friday’s festivities, according to USA Today. The luger said she planned on visiting the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center on Friday morning instead.

Shiffrin, who won a gold medal in giant slalom at the 2018 Olympics, chose not to visit the White House, according to the Washington Post. She did not speak publicly about her decision, but told CNN in 2016: “The value that [Trump] portrays to everyone is not ideal… I don’t think women are going to be looking to him. I think they still look to Hillary [Clinton].”

Tennessee Waffle House Shooting Leave 4 Dead, 4 Others Injured

Retail Signs

Source: David Kozlowski / Getty

A shooting at a Tennessee Waffle House restaurant left four people dead and another four suffering from injuries. The assault was stopped when a customer rushed the gunman, snatched away an assault rifle, which prompted the man to flee on foot with barely wearing any clothes.

Local outlet News Channel 5 reports:

It happened around 3:25 a.m. Sunday at 3571 Murfreesboro Pike near Hobson Pike.

Metro Nashville Police Department officials named 29-year-old Travis Reinking, from Illinois, as a person of interest in the shooting, saying the vehicle the gunman used was registered to him.

Police said Reinking drove his pickup truck into the Waffle House parking lot around 3:18 a.m.. He sat in the truck for a few minutes before getting out and immediately shooting and killing two people outside of the restaurant with an AR-15.

Officers said he then went inside and shot and killed another victim.

The outlet adds that the customer, also 29, was able to wrestle the gun from Reinking’s hands and tossed it away. Reinking left the area after she shed a coat and was not wearing any clothes in some reports. Reports say Reinking may have lived in the area and fled home after witnesses say they spotted the man walking near woods shirtless.

Spot the Difference: Damien Hirst shows his brand-new works at Houghton House

Does Damien Hirst ever sit still? Apparently not. The contemporary artist and collector has a brand new exhibition, Colour Space Painting and Outdoor Sculptures, at Houghton House in Norfolk.

Most of us are familiar with Damien Hirst’s Spot Paintings – canvases featuring grids of spots, each painted a different colour with no apparent pattern or motive. Once described by Hirst as ‘a way of pinning down the joy of colour,’ the 1000-plus grids in the series have recently morphed into something more free-flowing – a series titled Colour Space. And they’ve found a temporary home at Houghton Hall in Norfolk.

Damien Hirst, Colour Space series, in the Saloon at HOUGHTON HALL, NORFOLK ©Damien Hirst and Science Ltd. All Rights Reserved, DACS 2018 Photo by Pete Huggins

To give you a little context, the Palladian-style house was built in 1720 as a home for the first British Prime Minister, Sir Robert Walpole, and its interiors were designed to reflect his status. If you’re thinking lavish decor, with plenty of gilding and carving, you’re on the right lines. Not necessarily the obvious location for Hirst’s exhibition, Colour Space Painting and Outdoor Sculptures then?

Well, maybe. But Walpole happened to be a prolific collector of art – he amassed one of the greatest collections of European art in Britain during his lifetime – and so the grand space is ideal for exhibiting large-scale works. Plus, as an artist known for disrupting the status quo,  Hirst’s latest pieces have a transformative effect on these traditional gilded interiors (and the well-manicured gardens of the estate, too).

Damien Hirst, Colour Space series, in The White Drawing-Room at HOUGHTON HALL, NORFOLK ©Damien Hirst and Science Ltd. All Rights Reserved, DACS 2018 Photo by Pete Huggins

It’s slightly strange looking at this collision of old and new – you wouldn’t expect it to work. But, oddly, the motion of the swirling colours within these new paintings brings something fresh into the space. A burst of organic energy. And it does more than simply work, it actually mesmerises you a little.

‘I originally wanted the Spots to look like they were painted by a human trying to paint like a machine,’ says Hirst. ‘Colour Space is going back to the human element, so instead you have the fallibility of the human hand in the drips and inconsistencies. There are still no two exact colours that repeat in each painting, which is really important to me. I think of them as cells under a microscope.’

Hirst’s paintings open up Houghton’s State Rooms like portals between two (highly colour saturated) worlds and, with a couple of his kinetic ‘Levitation’ sculptures installed for good measure, all your senses get involved. You can almost hear the art, as well as see it.

This experience of the unexpected extends beyond the House itself, into the grounds where several of Hirst’s most celebrated sculptures have been placed. In these perfectly groomed gardens, the last thing you’d anticipate stumbling across is ‘Charity’ – a giant painted bronze sculpture of a young girl with a brace on her leg, based on a familiar 20th-century charity collection box – or the three-tonne male anatomical model, ‘Temple’. Sculpture demands space to be viewed properly though – you’re meant to be able to walk around it and take in every angle – so in this environment that’s far removed from the traditional gallery or urban location, Hirst’s pieces look a little different. They reveal themselves in a new light.

‘It felt right to show them somewhere historic rather than in a conventional gallery space,’ says Hirst. ‘And Houghton’s perfect. It feels totally right.’

We’d agree with that. It’s definitely worth a trip to Norfolk and, if/ when you do visit, we’d love to hear your thoughts on it – just drop us a message via one of our social media channels, or pop in and have a chat with our art advisors in the gallery.

Colour Space Painting and Outdoor Sculptures is open at Houghton House, Norfolk until 15 July 2018. For more information, visit houghtonhall.com

This map shows what a nuclear bomb would do if it landed right on your house

nuclear bomb map

We live in very bizarre times. Nuclear weapons are commonplace, at least insofar as lots of countries have access to them but never actually use them, but tensions between superpowers never seem to go away. The US is in an open war of words with Russia, while North Korea, despite being on its best behavior lately, is still seemingly a threat to just about everyone. The Middle East is in constant unrest, and nobody knows who, if anyone, they can actually trust. With all that in mind, let’s pretend someone launched a nuke at your house.

Outrider.org is an activist group made up of scientists and experts who hope to curb the worldwide nuclear threat through an information campaign. To that end, they’ve created a freely accessible tool to simulate what would happen if a nuclear weapon were dropped on any particular spot on the globe. The result is both fascinating and frightening.

The Note: White House census stance makes immigrants’ fears worse

The TAKE with MaryAlice Parks

The White House yesterday could have tried to allay the fears of immigrants, civil right activists, and Democrats worried that the last-minute addition to the 2020 census — a question on citizenship — will significantly dampen immigrant participation.

Press secretary Sarah Sanders could have said the White House wants everyone, regardless of status, to still participate. After all, the law dictates that the federal government try to count everyone, not just citizens.

She could have reminded people of another law, too, that says census data cannot be shared with any other government agency, or she could have said plainly that people will not be deported based on the data. She could have added that the White House wants a fair and accurate count to make sure inner cities and blue states are not essentially cheated out of federal funding if people are too nervous to open their doors to census workers.

But she didn’t.

Instead she talked about needing…

McMaster former National Security Adviser, and Rex Tillerson former Secretary of State were ousted from their posts. On the last day of February Hope Hicks, former White House Communications Director, announced she was leaving the White House.

Cohn was replaced by CNBC contributor Larry Kudlow, McMaster Was replaced by Fox News contributor and former U.N. ambassador John Bolton, and Tillerson was replaced by CIA director Mike Pompeo.

OTTOMAN EMPIRE Ottomans provide a stylish way to hide a multitude of hoarding sins. They also tuck neatly under a floating shelf or in a corner to be brought out for additional seating when needed.

BENEATH THE BED Under-bed storage bins or boxes are an extremely useful tool given that they are usually not seen by anyone but the homeowner. Seasonal clothes, extra pillows or blankets, can all live comfortably under your bed or sofa until they are needed. Many bins have wheels making it easy to access items when needed.

FOLDING TIME Think practically and fill your small space with double duty pieces. There are many options for furniture that function in more than one way. A drop leaf table can become a console, desk or even dining room table depending on how and where you set it up. Changing accessories based on use is an easy tactic to instantly increase your space. Recognizing a serious demand, many furniture designers are now creating pieces with a fold-out option like desks that start off small and stylish but open to seat up to six guests comfortably.

HOOKED UP Time-tested, sturdy and stylish fold-down metal hooks are must have small space hacks for any homeowner with limited space and no garage. Whether hanging extra chairs until company arrives or affixing your bike to the wall during home hours, hooks are useful and also make your place look like a cool warehouse loft in Brooklyn.
