Who is Laura Crane? Love Island new girl and surfer from Devon

IT’S not every day that a professional surfer joins Love Island and so Laura Crane is definitely a villa first.

The surfing pro is looking for someone who’s ready for an adventure – are any of the lads fit enough to keep up with her?

Laura Crane is always looking for her next adventure.
Laura Crane is always looking for her next adventure.
ITV

Who is Laura Crane?

Laura is a 23-year-old professional surfer who’s been breaking waves since she was 16.

She’s represented the Great Britain team and taken part in the qualifying world series two year years during that time as well.

She grew up surrounded by surfer boys which might have influenced her career choice – but she also thinks this means she will sway towards the guys in the Love Island villa when looking for friendship.

The blonde bombshell is keen to not tread on any toes in the villa but is looking for a guy who has a sense of humour and can keep up with her on her adventures.

When is Love Island on ITV2?

Love Island series four kicked off on Monday, June 4, on ITV.

The show is airing at 9.00pm six nights a week – only taking a break on Saturdays – over eight weeks.

Caroline Flack has presented Love Island since it returned to TV in 2015 and is joined once again by voice-over artist Iain Stirling.

Kem Cetinay, the winner in 2017, is also back to host a daily spin-off podcast entitled The Morning After with TV presenter, Arielle Free.

BEST DEAL UPDATE (UK):

This is the one thing that Love Island contestants are banned from bringing into the villa

It all makes sense!

REX

Love Island 2018 is underway and while a lot of us thought we’d be watching it ironically (this writer included), we’re now hooked.

We want the water bottle with our name on, the endless beauty supply, but more than anything we want Jack Fincham as our boyfriend – don’t worry though, we’d never do that to Dani!

Yes, everyone’s desperate to get into that villa, with it even emerging this week that some people are going to extreme lengths – with it reported that there are at least five attempted break ins on the villa every day.

But for the contestants who actually are allowed in the villa, there are apparently a few rules, from no smoking in public areas and no masturbating, to no nudity and no drunken or unsafe sex.

REX

One reported rule that we didn’t expect however was no paper and pens, with islanders reportedly banned from bringing the items into the Majorcan villa.

While the rule may seem odd, it does make sense – being able to write secret notes would deter islanders from having difficult conversations in public, something that makes the show more watchable.

REX

Of course there are ways around it – when Zara left the villa last month, BFF Ellie wrote her a note to put in her suitcase, writing with eyeliner on a piece of toilet roll. But on the whole, the islanders are just encouraged to say what they’re feeling.

Works for us!

Samira just opened up about villa life and why she chose to leave Love Island

‘Dani and Jack are going to get married, have kids and all of that’

REX

Love Island 2018 is getting dramatic, with the past week pushing the show to breaking point.

Tonight’s episode reached climax when Samira Mighty, one of the show’s originals, chose to leave the villa, just days after her ‘Prince Charming’ Frankie was voted off the show.

‘I finally got what I wanted and now I feel like I’m back at square one’ she told Dani, breaking the news to her fellow islanders the next morning.

‘This decision is so, so hard,’ she explained. ‘I’m devastated by it but I think that it is the right thing to do – just follow my heart because I’ve never done that before. I’ve always taken the back seat and now I need to go for it head on and leave and just go for Frankie. I’ve got to go with my gut feeling.’

So the 22-year-old left the villa, but how is she feeling now that she’s on the outside?

REX

How do you feel about leaving the villa?

‘I feel very confident and very proud of myself. I feel like it was the right time for me to leave. I’m obviously devastated to be leaving my best friends but this is the perfect time. I’ve found what I wanted to find and it was Frankie so I’m going to go and get him. I do see a future with Frankie, I’ve
never met anyone like him before. He is gorgeous and we did have a genuine connection. I wouldn’t change anything about my time in the villa, I have no regrets.’

Are you looking forward to seeing Frankie?

‘I am really excited and also really nervous. All we know is our villa relationship so I’m really excited to see how it’ll work on the outside world and if we are compatible and do like each other as much as we said. I’m a bit nervous but mostly excited. Just before he left he said “see you in three weeks, see you soon” and he said to a few of the boys that he was going to wait for me so it feels positive at the moment and good.’

Who did you click with the most in the villa?

‘I clicked with everyone. Everyone was my best friend! But I’d say Dani, she is the best, most amazing girl. She always kept me positive. I love Megan so much, we got really close and what she has with Wes is very genuine. I also got on really well with Wes too. Georgia is super confident and bubbly and that’s exactly what she’s always like. I love her, we got really close and I did feel for her with everything she went through with Josh but she is happy with Sam now. I love that girl.’

REX

What are your hopes for Dr Alex?

‘Alex is so unique. He is his own self, he has never changed and he needs a girl to come in for him and not have eyes for anyone else. I just hope that Alex finds love because he has waited long enough. I really like Alexandra, she does seem really nice. And she was genuine about her feelings for Alex when she came in. He really makes her laugh and crack up. There are other single guys in there and they want to take her out… It’s all up to Alexandra, she has the power.’

What is your take on villa life?

‘Villa life is a roller coaster. It is absolutely amazing, I walked around pinching myself that I was there. You go through ups and downs but mostly ups because you’re there with amazing people. You are meeting boys and girls and making friends. It is very intense but your emotions and feelings in there are all real. You completely forget about the cameras. You are so immersed in everyone else.’

REX

What was your standout Love Island memory?

‘I loved the Ministry of Sound party night. I also really enjoyed the stripping dance off challenge. I loved my outfit, my silver thigh high boots! It was nerve-wracking but so fun. The challenges were also amazing and finally meeting Frankie, that was a big milestone for me in the villa.’

Who do you think could be engaged by this time next year?

‘Definitely Dani and Jack. 100 per cent. They are going to get married, have kids and all of that. They are amazing together. And maybe Josh and Kaz, they are very close.’

Who do you think is going to win?

‘Dani and Jack because they have had such a journey from the start. They were coupled up on day one, then she had a little dip where she wasn’t sure how she felt about him. Then Hayley said she fancied Jack and then Jack tried to get a reaction out of Dani by speaking to Hayley. That was ages ago now, I’m even having to jog my memory! They are like magnets to each other now. I love them and I know they really love each other.’

We’re going to miss Samira!

Where is Love Island 2018 filmed, can you book to stay in the villa in Majorca and what’s the place like inside?

THE Love Island villa is the setting of 2018’s hottest show.

But where exactly is the luxury holiday home? Can you stay there and who many people does it sleep?

This year’s villa looks better than ever
This year the villa looks better than ever. It is located in Majorca
ITV Picture Desk

Where is the Love Island 2018 villa?

The Love Island villa is located on the Spanish Balearic Island of Majorca (Mallorca), in Sant Llorenç des Cardassar on the East of the Island.

The villa is the same luxury location that last year’s contestants stayed in, but it’s been given an overhaul.

The famous hideaway has been given a makeover, meaning the stars will be tempted to spend more time in there away from the prying eyes of their co-stars.

The bedroom is decorated with bright blue and pink blankets and cushions, with giant, holiday-themed images on the walls.

Outside seating and day beds have been set up around the pool area, with sun loungers and an al-fresco bar set up for late-night drinks.

The villa also boasts an enormous pool, gym area and jacuzzi.

The round seating area complete with a fancy fire pit is still in place, along with the enormous open-plan kitchen and living room.

Staff have been busy for weeks setting up the hidden cameras and linking up the microphones to make sure every cough and spit is captured on screen.

Where is Majorca and what is the weather like?

Mallorca is the largest Balearic Island and is located in the Mediterranean Sea off the south-east coast of mainland Spain.

The island is known for its beach resorts and is a popular destination with British tourists.

Majorca is the “sister” island to Ibiza and Menorca and flying time from the UK is about two and a half hours.

The island’s capital is Palma, known for it’s Gothic Santa Maria cathedral and beautiful bay.

The island is also the home of notorious party destination Magaluf, which has previously played host to reality TV show The Magaluf Weekender – which has now relocated and become known as The Ibiza Weekender.

The weather in Mallorca is typically Mediterranean, with mild winters and hot, sunny summer months.

Can I stay at the Love Island villa?

Yes, you can stay in the villa, but it will cost around £3000 for a week’s stay.

BEST DEAL UPDATE (UK):

Why aren’t the Love Island girls allowed to be funny?

Sort it out ITV2.

REX

Love Island 2018 is going from strength to strength, with this week’s six shock exits and two new additions shaking up the couples and friendship groups.

Drama has undoubtedly built, but strangely, we’re only really seeing it from the girls’ side, and on closer inspection that seems like a theme from the start.

While the boys’ air time has been taken up by a lot of Jack’s impressions and group Yorkshire accents, the footage of the girls has focused on cruel digs and catty arguments.

REX

Take this week for example when the girls were taken for a day trip to reconnect after Georgia-new-jack-kiss-gate.

The footage flitted between the boys and the girls, with the boys roleplaying as Yorkshire farmers in the sun, while the girls were crying and shouting at eachother.

REX

The easy answer? The boys get on better than the girls.

That might be the case, with this season’s boys seeming to have a particularly close bond, but why do the girls then have to endure all of the drama?

With Megan, Georgia, Ellie and Laura, there have been a lot of tears and arguing, and of course given the nature of the show, that has to be aired.

But why aren’t we seeing their funny side too? Let’s not pretend that they don’t have one.

Frankie and Grace. REX.

Take Grace for instance – we only saw her sense of humour when she made a dig after her exit, joking that keeping her Love Island water bottle was her highlight.

Why hadn’t we seen her dry sense of humour before? If we had, she might have been spared eviction – all we had seen previously was her cutting hair and saying she liked cashew nuts – It’s no wonder she was voted out.

REX

The boys keep citing ‘banter’ and ‘good chat’ as reasons for fancying the girls- but we’re yet to see it.

Why? Because it’s not getting airtime – and in this day and age that’s not OK, not to mention it puts them at a greater risk of getting voted off.

REX

It feels like we’re reinforcing the tired gender stereotype that women aren’t as funny as men, something that considering millions of people tune into Love Island, is actually pretty harmful.

So please Love Island, from a team of funny girls, stop doing us a disservice. You don’t have to lose the drama, but at least give the girls a break and let us see their funny side.

This is 2018 after all, and hopefully be now we all know that girls can do a hell of a lot more than cry and shout.

Grace Wardle and Frankie Foster have been axed from ‘Love Island’ – as two new Islanders entered the villa

OHMYGOSSIP — Grace Wardle and Frankie Foster have been axed from ‘Love Island’ – as two new Islanders entered the villa. The 25-year-old hairdresser and the 22-year-old student were dumped from the famous villa during Monday’s (09.07.18) episode of the ITV2 reality show, after they failed to secure the public’s vote for favourite girl and favourite boy currently on the show.

Islanders were sent a text message during the show telling them the public had been voting for their favourites, before revealing the bottom three girls as Megan, Ellie, and Grace, and the boys as Frankie, Charlie, and Josh.

Another text then revealed that Grace and Frankie had received the fewest votes, and would therefore be going home. But despite being prematurely dumped from the show, hairdresser Grace is “feeling positive” about her experience in the villa. When asked in her post-exit interview how she feels following her eviction, she said: “I’m feeling positive. I feel like I’ve had an amazing experience. I was overwhelmed to even make it into the main villa from Casa Amor so I feel privileged that I’ve had the best of both, that I experienced Casa Amor and that I experienced going into the main villa.”

The beauty was “shocked” at the news of the surprise dumping, but admits she wasn’t surprised to find herself in the bottom three. She added: “I think that we were all very shocked when the text came into the villa that there was going to be a dumping. I don’t think it was a shock that myself, Megan and Ellie were announced as being the public’s bottom three girls in the villa. I think people were more shocked that Frankie left and are more upset about that, for Samira’s sake. It is unfortunate that the first guy Samira gelled with in five weeks has gone.”

However, fans won’t have much time to mourn Grace and Frankie’s eviction, as it was also announced during Monday’s show that two new boys are on their way to the villa. Kieran Nicholls, a 26-year-old personal trainer, and Idris Virgo, a 25-year-old boxer, will join the remaining contestants this week, and are set to cause drama as both boys have their eye on Kaz, who is already coupled up with Josh.

Idris said: “I’ve got my eye on Kaz, Georgia and Samira. I know some of the girls are coupled up, like Kaz with Josh, so it would be a challenge with her but I’ll find a way of stealing Kaz because she is my type. I don’t mind stepping on people’s toes.”

Whilst Kieran added: “I’ve got my eye on Kaz in terms of looks and personality. She has her head screwed on and she knows where she wants to be and that’s a trait I look for. Megan is also pretty hot. Maybe she might meet someone like me who will tame her.”

In tonight’s show, the least popular girl and boy will get chucked off the Island in a shock dumping – leaving two spaces free.

In tonight’s show, viewers will see the villa’s inhabitants get told that two people are leaving.

Samira gets a text, saying: “Islanders, tonight two new boys will enter the villa… but first… two Islanders must leave. Please gather around the fire pit immediately.”

Margot Robbie has responded to claims she looks like Megan from Love Island

JUICY.

Megan Barton Hanson seems to be the girl pretty much everyone wants in the Love Island villa this series.

You may remember that during one episode, Alex (aka Dr Love) referred to Megan as ‘the hottest girl on the planet’ and compared her to Margot Robbie. And it’s true, there’s definitely a resemblance.

But funnily enough, the actress herself saw the clip and has some thoughts.

love island beauty

‘The other night we were watching and I think it was Alex who said that, and we all lost it! We were like, “Oh my god, they know who I am on Love Island!”,’ she recently told Metro.

Side note: we are loving that even Margot Robbie is obsessed with the show.

So what did the star think of the comparison itself?

margot robbie

‘I personally don’t see the resemblance,’ she said. ‘We’d just finished drinking beer and eating crisps and saying, “We’re so disgusting we could never be on Love Island we’re such fatties, they would never let us on”.

‘They all have amazing bodies and they are so gorgeous and always so done up and looking incredible, and then they said [I look like her] and we were like, “Oh my god!”‘

We definitely don’t agree that Margot Robbie isn’t seriously gorgeous herself. Come on now.

On another note, anyone else think it’s a bit weird that she was surprised they knew who she is? You’re an Oscar-nominated actress, girl!

Zara McDermott reveals Adam Collard hasn’t contacted her since leaving the Love Island villa as she reveals truce with Rosie Williams

ZARA McDermott has revealed Adam Collard hasn’t been in touch with her since leaving the Love Island villa last night.

The government adviser, 21, confirmed on Good Morning Britain earlier today there had been radio silence from the Geordie personal trainer, 22, despite him admitting just days ago he still has feelings for her.

Richard Arnold asked Zara if she had heard from Adam since he was booted out of the villa last night.

She replied: “I’ve not heard from him .. I think he needs to pull his finger out a little bit.

“It wasn’t easy watching him kiss someone else on TV so soon after we had separated so I think he has got to pull his finger out a little bit and make some effort.

“The Adam I watch on TV and the Adam I got to know in the villa are two different people. I need to wait to speak to him in person.”

Sat next to her, Rosie Williams, a 26-year-old lawyer, added: “ He has got to prove himself to you, hasn’t he babe.”

The two girls insisted that, despite drama on the show which saw them fight over the Geordie personal trainer, they were fine.

Zara said: “We are absolutely fine.”

Rosie agreed: “We are going to go for dinner and have a little chat.”

The segment got off to a bumpy start when Kate Garraway accidentally fell off a giant bean bag and onto the lap of another former Love Island contestant, Charlie Frederick, live on the show.

The TV star, 51, looked shocked as she ended up getting cosier to the model than she had planned during the show earlier today.

The camera panned across the studio to show Kate sat on a giant bean bag along with co-host Ranvir Singh and Love Island stars Hayley Hughes, Zara and Rosie in addition to Charlie, as well as Richard on an inflatable flamingo.

Kate joked: “When sitting on a giant bean bag, it’s probably best not to actually dress as the bean bag.”

However, as she spoke, the presenter sunk into a gap down the side and onto Charlie.

She grabbed his leg as she struggled to pick herself up off the floor and ended up in a fit of giggles with her head in her hands.

However, there is another island that has floated over, and it is making quite the storm…

Women’s Aid issues an abuse warning after Adam’s ‘manipulative’ behaviour on Love Island

Here’s what’s being said…

Love Island got dramatic this week, with ‘couple’ Rosie Williams and Adam Collard seeming to call their relationship quits, with Adam neglecting Rosie for a new attraction, Zara.

But it’s not the separation that has got the world talking, but instead the way it came about, and was dealt with by the 22-year-old personal trainer.

ITV/REX/Shutterstock

When he was confronted by a tearful Rosie, he appeared to mock her reaction, and viewers were horrified to watch him manipulate her into believing that it was her fault, taking to Twitter to voice their outrage.

‘Seriously – laughing at a girl crying because you betrayed her trust and led her on…that’s just the worst thing you can do,’ tweeted one user.

Another posted: ‘Adam’s a controlling, mass manipulating wench. He has constantly humiliated girls, making them feel insecure &to blame for his disloyalties & disrespect.’

And it wasn’t just Love Island viewers who were concerned, with domestic abuse charity, Women’s Aid, using Adam’s behaviour as a warning of abuse.

Whilst accepting that Love Island is an artificial environment, Katie Ghose, chief executive of Women’s Aid explained that Adam’s actions on the outside world could be seen as emotional abuse.

ITV/REX/Shutterstock

‘In a relationship, a partner questioning your memory of events, trivialising your thoughts or feelings, and turning things around to blame you can be part of pattern of gaslighting and emotional abuse,’ explained Katie.

What should people do therefore?

ITV/REX/Shutterstock

Speak out. According to Katie, viewers who are in similar situations should ‘join [Rosie] in recognising unhealthy behaviour in relationships and speaking out against all forms of domestic abuse – emotional as well as physical’.

‘It is only when we make a stand together against abuse in relationships that we will see attitudes change and an end to domestic abuse.’

We couldn’t agree more.

Niall’s friends ‘can’t get hold of him’ after his shock Love Island exit

Here’s what we know so far…

ITV/REX/Shutterstock

Love Island series 4 is only in its second week, and we’re already obsessed.

Why did Kendall have to be the first to go? Are Danni and Jack in it for the long haul? And, will Alex find love?

There are so many questions already, and we are deeply invested.

This week has been dominated however by the shock departure of one of the public’s top favourite Islanders, 23-year-old Niall Aslam, with his unexpected exit breaking the hearts of Love Island viewers, and his ‘rainbow fish’, Georgia.

‘Niall has left the villa for personal reason,’ ITV announced in a statement, something that fellow islander Alex later confirmed to the group.

‘For personal reasons unfortunately Niall can’t continue or come back to the villa,’ Alex announced to the islanders. ‘I’m obviously sad that Niall’s left the villa. We got on really, really well. He’s such a great guy. And I look forward to catching up with him and having some fun with him outside.’

While ITV is staying tight-lipped about the 23-year-old construction worker’s departure from the show, it has been reported by the Mirror Online, that the decision was down to health reasons, made jointly by Niall and the Love Island bosses.

Causing further concern, The Sun Online reported that Niall’s friends were unable to get hold of him after his departure, with one friend reportedly telling the publication, ‘We don’t know what’s gone on and we haven’t spoken to him so we’re in the dark.’

‘We are as shocked as everyone else is,’ another reportedly added. It’s a shame as he was doing really well and taking the show by storm.’

‘Obviously I was coupled up with him so obviously I came closer to him than most people in here,’ his Love Island other half Georgia explained of Niall after his exit. ‘But it wasn’t just that. He was actually my friend, my buddy.’

Niall has yet to speak out about his exit.

We’re sending him our thoughts.

Leros: the Greek island with just a touch of Italy

This Dodecanese gem has 20th-century Italian influences as well as the classic repertoire of secret beaches and laid-back tavernas

‘It is an unusual island,” said my friend Yannis, slightly self-consciously. “We are a bit different from our neighbours.”

Yannis, a cafe owner, is right: Leros is unusual, but in a good way. It is just a few miles from Turkey, but a million tourist miles from Kos and Rhodes, its Dodecanese siblings. It has mostly slipped under the holiday radar, which is a shame because it has everything we all want from a Greek island – beaches, fishing villages, tavernas, ruins – plus an extraordinary modern history. And for that we can thank Mussolini.

These are the first set of Love Island 2018 couples and cue our new obsession

IT BEGINS.

ITV

Love Island is back and we’re already cancelling any and all plans. To our friends, lovers, family members, doctors and whoever else may be concerned, we’ve got something more important to do: namely, watch a bunch of beautiful people hook up in a villa. Well, the pilot episode of the new season just aired on ITV2 and the first set of couples have been locked in.

Now that we’re over all that Kem drama and have met the new Love Island 2018 contestants, we’re already invested in the drama.

Love Island 2018 Contestants

love island 2018 couples

ITV

This year’s cast members include Dani Dyer, the daughter of EastEnders’ Danny Dyer, Dr. Alex George, West End performer Samira Mighty and others. There’s another former pop star called Eyal Booker in the line up and here’s hoping there’s another anticlimactic Marcel x Blazin’ Squad reveal on the show with the rest of the villa.

So, who shacked up with who in the first episode? Here’s the gossip…

Love Island 2018 Couples

Niall Aslam and Kendall Rae-Knight

love island 2018 couples

ITV

It was love (or something like it) at first sight for Niall, who was the first boy to be thrown into the lion’s den. Kendall clearly liked what she saw as she stepped forwards and didn’t budge from her choice.

Dr. Alex George and Samira Mighty

ITV

Things got a little awkward for poor Alex and Samira, as they had a pretty rough go of it this episode. To begin with, nobody stepped forwards for the doctor when he stepped out and he wound up choosing Laura (which didn’t last long). He and Samira were then paired together, as she was last on the bench.

Wes Nelson and Laura Anderson

love island 2018 couples

ITV

In the first tense moment of the season, Laura said goodbye to Alex and stepped forwards when Wes came into the picture. The bubbly blonde and kickboxer forced Alex back to the bench when Wes chose her.

Eyal Booker and Hayley Hughes

love island 2018 couples

ITV

It might have been his former pop idol status, but Eyal had the ladies seeing stars when he put his best foot forward. Three women – Dani, Samira and Hayley – all threw their hats in the ring, but it was Hayley who came out on top.

Jack Finchan and Dani Dyer

love island 2018 couples

ITV

Although Samira and Dani both stepped forwards for clean-cut Jack, it was Dani who eventually won him over. Who knows, maybe he’s a low key EastEnders fan?

And then there was Adam…

ITV

Adam Collard arrived at the end of the episode to shake things up a bit and had the boys quaking in their flip flops. The Newcastle-based personal trainer has 24 hours to decide which of the girls he’ll be sweeping off their feet (and away from another contestant), so you’ll have to stay tuned for tonight’s episode…

Who is Dr. Alex George? Love Island 2018 contestant and aspiring TV doctor

LOVE Island contestants will thankfully have a doctor present when emergency drama kicks off.

Last year, Dr Marcel was always on call and this time, Alex George is here to pick up the slack. Here’s all you need to know about this aspiring TV doctor…

Hunky Dr Alex George is hoping to enjoy some mouth-to-mouth action
ITV

Who is Alex George?

Dr. Alex George is an A&E doctor, currently working at the University Hospital Lewisham in south-east London.

The 27-year-old, who is originally from Carmarthen, Wales, studied medicine at Exeter University.

According to the Daily Mail, Alex was able to secure the eight-ten weeks required by working on a zero hours contract.

The controversial contracts mean their bosses are under no obligation to give them work and the hospital are powerless to stop employees from pursuing other projects.

Alex is hoping Love Island will help him become the next big TV doctor
ITV

What has Alex said about Love Island?

It was recently revealed Love Island contestants would face a strict new ban on drunken sex and nudity and Alex has promised to abide by them.

He says: “You’re recorded 24 hours a day and I just want to make sure that I behave in the right way.

I absolutely love my job, I’ve worked since the age of 13 to get here and I go to work every day and I genuinely enjoy it.”

If he finds fame on the show, Alex believes he will still return to his successful career: “I would probably go back and do it part time, if I could mix it with TV work I would.

He added: “I think there’s probably room for a new TV doctor!”

When does Love Island series four start on ITV2?

Love Island series four will start Monday, June 4, at 9pm.

The show will air over eight weeks and among the cast are Cabin Crew member Laura Anderson, Barmaid Dani Dyer, and model Eyal Booker.

Caroline Flack has presented Love Island since it returned to TV in 2015 and will once again be joined by voice-over artist Iain Stirling.

2017’s winner Kem Cetinay is also returning to host a daily spin-off show entitled The Morning After with TV presenter, Arielle Free.

FASHION DEAL UPDATE:

In Belize you can rent a whole island for $500

Are you bored of the same vacation spots? Bored of having to deal with all of your fellow tourists? Ever wanted to feel like a king but without the hefty price tag? Every wanted to just get away from it all? Ever wanted your own private island? If your answer is yes to all of those questions, then you’ll be amazed and pleased to know that your dreams can become reality as it will only cost you $ 500 to rent a whole island in Belize.

Where is it?

Bird Island is located in the middle of the ocean, off the coast of Placencia, in Belize. It is currently being rented out on the holiday rental site, Airbnb, for just $ 495 a night! There is a minimum three-day stay – but come on, who would turn that down? The island is slap bang in the middle of some of the best snorkeling, kayaking, and swimming conditions, and is perfect for anyone wanting a relaxing and tranquil getaway.

What does it offer?

The little island comes complete with three bedrooms and is suitable for four people. So get some mates together, because you’re going to Belize! But it doesn’t stop there. As well as full access to the entirety of the private island, Bird Island also offers a few extras in with the price. There’s a kitchen to cook up some fresh (quite literally) fish, two kayaks, Wi-Fi and a phone, a lookout tower with sun deck, and transportation to and from the town of Placencia.

You’re not too far away from civilization

We all know from Lord of the Flies that staying on a secluded island can make you all turn a bit loopy. We’re not saying this will happen because let’s be honest; this island is a little slice of paradise. However, if you wanted to take a break from the seclusion (or you get a bit sea sick) the town of Palencia is just a 20-minute boat ride away.

It’s not your average vacation

One thing to note about the incredible Bird Island is that it’s not your typical resort vacation. You won’t have room service, you won’t have someone coming to clean your room, and there isn’t a restaurant nearby to cook your dinner. This really is a DIY vacation. You get the whole place to yourself, but you’ll also have to look after yourselves. So don’t expect all-inclusive luxury! Expect natural, back-to-basics luxury.

It’s proving pretty popular

The idea of renting out your own personal island is proving pretty popular – and we’re not surprised. The island has been the main feature in numerous travel blogs, magazines and has been one of the main homes for Airbnb’s ‘Like This, Live There’ campaign back in 2016. This really is a little slice of paradise, and it could be yours for less than $ 500 a night.

A taste of Greece: the new culinary scene on Tinos island

From beekeepers to winemakers, locals and newcomers are creating a foodie paradise on Tinos in the Cyclades – and turning old buildings into stylish places to stay, too

It’s pretty obvious why the 20th-century Greek philosopher Cornelius Castoriadis called Tinos the “handmade island”. In the 50-odd villages of this 75 square-mile isle in the northern Cyclades, marble sculptors have transformed every lintel, doorway, and fountain into a work of art. Even the For Sale signs on empty houses are carved from marble.

The dry stone walls that corrugate the valleys, the intricate dovecotes and the gaping quarries sprinkled around these sage-scented hills are evidence of hard labour, as well as an artistic sensibility.

The amazing island that costs $7.5 Million

If you’re reading this article in an office (get back to work, silly) or just perusing the internet while avoiding doing the laundry, there’s a fair chance that you, like us, absolutely hate people. Yep, people suck, and the outside world is just way too peopley for us (*shivers*). However, there’s only so much time you can spend away from people before realizing that you have to pass your neighbor’s porch on the way to your car or pass a colleague on the way to the washroom. You’re probably thinking, ‘Oh, what I would do to live on an 86-acre private island off the coast of Maine, with my own church, boathouse, stables and personal tavern!’ Well, it’s funny you should say that…

Hope Island

If you’ve ever wanted to live on your own private island and avoid people altogether (AKA the dream), you better start counting your change, because one recently went on the market, and is looking for a new owner to look after it. Located just a 25-minute boat ride away from Portland, Maine, Hope Island consists of 86-acres of pure beauty. You can truly live it large on this picturesque island…if you have a spare $ 7.5 million in the bank. Psssht, we wish.

A little bit of history

So where did it all start with Hope Island? Well, a property developer by the name of John Cacoulidis decided to buy the island in 1993 for an incredible $ 1.3 million and has since transformed what was once a barren landscape into something out of James Bond. Boasting an 11,000 square-foot mansion, jagged coastline, beautiful beaches, a fixed pier plus boat moorings, helicopter pad, colorful woodland, roadways, and numerous outhouses, this island really has it all. However, the icing on the cake is that Hope Island has its own personal tavern. Yep, that really does mean you’ll have beer on tap…IN YOUR OWN BACKYARD.

A few added extras

As if the private tavern wasn’t enough to make you sell your own liver, Hope Island also offers a few added extras. Mainly, it’s not the only island included in the (hefty) price tag. Yuh-huh, Hope Island also features three ‘picnic’ islands, which you can use to your heart’s content. You might even want to build a swimming pool on one of these little islands, as weirdly, that is the only thing Hope Island is missing.

Why is it up for sale?

You might be wondering why John Cacoulidis would want to sell his beloved island, but it seems the answer is pretty heartbreaking. John was not alone when he transformed Hope Island into an impressive sanctuary. He was also helped by his wonderful wife, Phyllis. Unfortunately, Phyllis passed away in 2016, which meant John spent less and less time on the island by himself. He now wants to pass the island on to someone else. Could it be you?

We all dream of one day owning our own island, but with Hope Island, it seems this dream could actually become a reality…

The tiny island that the British traded for Manhattan

When we look at some of the seminal places in the world, and the events that have led us there, there is plenty of food for thought. We know that the Roman Empire spanned the entire globe, and helped shape the world, that East and West Germany finally became a united Germany, and that Athens was the birthplace of theology, philosophy, and many of our cultural values.
However, when we talk about history, the name Banda Run is probably a name you would instantly gloss over without thinking, and why would you? Sounds like the name of a Mesopotamian King or something, right? Not quite. We don’t blame you for overlooking this name or thinking it has any relevance. But, prepare for a shock, because you’re about to meet the tiny island that once changed the world.

History

In the early days of seafaring and exploration, Arabic sailors took to the Seven Seas and headed for the famed Spice Islands. This was a cluster of islands in the Pacific Ocean, and the Philippine Sea, famed for all manner of exotic spices. Back in the days of sail exploration, the Spice Islands were seen as a great prize, and many nations raced to be the first to reach them, and claim the riches there. These were legendary islands that contained all manner of riches lying in wait, as you might imagine, they were hot property. In fact, there were plenty of nations vying for supremacy in the waters of the world.

History meets legend

Setting sail on the Arafura Sea, and finally reaching the Savu Sea, the Banda Sea is so close you can feel the ocean spray on your skin. This small part of Indonesia has played a crucial role in the development of the Western world, but not in the way you might have thought. It was actually traded by the Brits, for Manhattan, which, as we know is one of the most powerful and prominent parts of the USA. So, how did this happen? Well, to address that, we have to go back to the beginning.

What happened?

Once upon a time, in the long ago of the world, the Dutch and the British duked it out for around 60 years, trying to win naval supremacy, and conquer islands of spice, fruit, and silk. In 1667 the Dutch and English agreed the Treaty of Breda. Part of the treaty stipulated that the Dutch were to receive the island of Run in trade for the island on Manhattan in New Amsterdam, which the Dutch had colonized, and renamed it New York.

This tiny island on the coast of Indonesia is a world away from the fast-paced lights and sounds of New York City. In fact, these days the island still exists, and the locals make a modest life off fishing and nutmeg. It’s an island that has just five hours of electricity per day, and is in more or less the same state as it was all those years ago. New York, on the other hand, has Times Square, Wall Street, and is considered to be the financial, technological, and cultural hub of the world.

What is so unique about this island?

The Caribbean is pretty darn awesome, right? Where else do you get to enjoy the best weather in the world, swim in clear blue oceans, and sip on the most divine cocktails known to man?! The Caribbean regularly ranks on the lists of so many intrepid travelers, but where to go? There’s so much choice; in fact, there’s almost too much choice. But, there is one Caribbean island that we feel stands out above the rest.

The island in question is Aruba! This might be an island you’ve heard of before, but you may never have been there. If you’re looking for the perfect way of escaping the cold weather and heading for more tropical climates, Aruba should be the first name on your lips. Of the thousands of islands in the Caribbean, this is the one that seems to sit a cut above the rest – we’re going to examine why.

It’s a small island

You might not think this is a decisive factor, but Aruba is actually much smaller than you might have thought. It’s only 19 miles long, and around 6 miles wide, and this makes it very easy to get around and travel to where you want to be. Public transport is readily available, and efficiently run, and you can even go for great walks without too much trouble. The fact that the island is small only adds to that intimate feeling and makes it seem like a much more homely location.

One of the safest islands

When you’re booking a vacation in the Caribbean, you have to think about potential dangers while you’re there. Plenty of hurricanes and tsunamis have hit tropical islands in the past few years, with all of them causing untold devastation and destruction. The good news about Aruba is that it is out of the hurricane zone, making it one of the safest island in the Caribbean, and keeping you shielded from the elements. The last thing you want to be doing on your vacation is worrying about hurricane survival plans!

It’s got that perfect balance

Now, we know that some people like the hustle and bustle of a tourist resort, full of lots of different people from all over the world. And we know that others prefer quieter and more serene vacations, where they get to spend more time relaxing. The great thing about Aruba is the fact that it allows you to enjoy either – Palm Beach for the busy resort, and Eagle Beach for those who want a quieter experience. No matter what your passion or interest is, you’re bound to find something in Aruba to satisfy you.

Super friendly

Some people worry when they travel abroad that the locals may not be friendly, or it might be dangerous for them to be out and about. However, Aruba is the exact opposite of this and is home to some of the friendliest and most accommodating locals in the Caribbean. The atmosphere is friendly and kind, and the locals speak a variety of languages, including English and Dutch – and the island was even nicknamed One Happy Island.

From looking at these points it’s easy to see why Aruba is so popular, and what has made it one of the most stunning and popular Caribbean destinations. If you’re looking for a wonderful tropical getaway, this island can offer you so much more than many of the other islands in the Caribbean are able to, and that’s what makes it so appealing.

Apple built its tax home on an island you’ve probably never heard of

TwitterFacebook

A giant amount of Apple’s profits answer to the tax laws of no nation.

Jersey is an island floating in the English Channel, a bit closer to France than the United Kingdom, and, according to information obtained by the German media outlet Süddeutsche Zeitung, distributed by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, and published by The New York Times, it is the tax home to subsidiaries of Apple that help the giant corporation avoid paying taxes on billions of dollars.

Jersey is one of those places the average person isn’t likely to know much about unless they a) were born there, b) spend a lot of time coming up with offbeat vacation destinations, or c) are working with (or are a member of) a ginormous company that doesn’t like taxes.  Read more…

The mystery behind the Easter Island

Easter Island is one of the most striking and unforgettable islands in the Pacific Ocean. As a part of Chile, the island is located in the Polynesian Triangle and has a huge amount of Polynesian culture and heritage attached to it. Most people assume that because it’s a part of Chile, the island would best represent Chilean culture, but, that’s not the case. Because the principal inhabitants of the island were the Rapa Nui people, Polynesian culture is most definitely the order of the day here.

There have been a lot of studies of the Easter Islands, and Polynesian culture, but, some of the studies have thrown up some interesting findings. We’re going to look a little closer at Easter Island, and what genetic analysis has shown us about the island. This is one of the most picture perfect places on Earth, and would make a wonderful choice for your next vacation!

The island

Easter Island is one of the defining islands in the Pacific Ocean, and one of the most recognizable of all islands. It is best-known for the 887 moai statues that populate the island, built by the indigenous Rui Napa people. These are a huge draw and bring a lot of tourism to the island, and resulted in Easter Island being classified a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1995. With only around 5,800 residents, the island is among the most remote inhabited islands in the world.

DNA testing

A genetic study of the island and its people has thrown up some very interesting results. They showed that the people of the island had definitive South American DNA, despite the fact that a large amount of their heritage was actually Polynesian. Furthermore, more tests revealed an absence of South American DNA before around the 18th Century. It seems incredibly strange that there would be no direct genetic link between Polynesians and South Americans, especially considering the location of Easter Island.

Hypotheses

The findings seem to contradict the evidence and vice versa. It is clear that those on the island had links with South Americans around the 18th Century, due to DNA results, but, it is also obvious that there was no mark left by any kind of inbreeding. It’s most likely that trade routes opened up between Easter Island and South America, and this is why there was such a strong apparent link with South Americans. It seems as though the South Americans could have returned to the island to trade, and left descendants among the Polynesians.

Overall, we can’t really be sure why the results here are the way they are. There are a lot of potential reasons that could have led to such a discovery, and contradictory evidence might simply be as a result of not having enough samples or evidence to study. Nevertheless, Easter Island and the genetic makeup of the population is an incredibly interesting study. Hopefully, in the future, we will find out more and be able to nail down with certainty, where the genetic DNA line can be traced back to.

Stone Island x Porter and Seven Other Key European Drops

The biggest drops of the past week saw Supreme launch its latest The North Face collaboration, while Palace released the next instalment of its Winter 2017 collection. The next week isn’t looking too bad either, with Stone Island and Porter releasing their first joint capsule since 2015. Aside from that, the next seven days will also see a bevy of hotly anticipated adidas Originals collaborations — including with wings & horns and Sneakersnstuff — as well as pieces from Soulland, Parra and Diadora.

The next week also sees the long-awaited release of A-COLD-WALL*‘s Air Force 1 collaboration with NikeLab, as the London brand drops the sneakers at a one-off pop-up in its home city. We’ve put together a list of all the best products dropping in Europe this week, as well as what you’ll need to do to get your hands on them.

Parra “Get Me Out of Here” Collection

Dutch artist Parra has returned with his latest capsule collection, with an array of staple pieces bearing his artworks. Some of the standout pieces include a faux-shearling jacket that features an embroidered logo, a stone-washed hoodie and a “Star Struck” long-sleeve. The full collection is available now from the Parra web store.

Soulland x Bruta

The first collection from Danish brand Soulland and London’s Bruta saw the two take influence from house plants in Soulland creative director Silas Adler‘s apartment and from the colorful artwork of Peter Doig. Featuring floral embroidery, the collection includes shirts in navy, white and black. The collection is available now from Soulland’s stores and Bruta’s web store.

Antonioli INNER x Saucony Grid 9000 Milano

Saucony

For its collaboration with American sportswear brand Saucony, Milanese store Antonioli INNER took inspiration from its hometown. Taking on the Grid 9000 silhouette, the store gave it a cream and grey suede upper, with metallic gold highlights along the tongue as well as a gold and green corresponding panels. The colorway is a reference to Milan’s iconic Duomo. The capsule is available now in-store and online.

Stone Island x Porter

Having last worked together to celebrate Porter’s 80th anniversary in 2015, Stone Island has once again worked with the Japanese bag specialists. The latest capsule mixes Porter’s expertise with Stone Island’s legacy of innovative fabrics and experimental techniques. The collection — which includes the backpack, duffle and portfolio bags — is available now from Stone Island’s web store, with prices ranging from £175 GBP to £525 GBP (approximately $ 230 USD to $ 695 USD).

A-COLD-WALL* x NikeLab Air Force 1 High

Nike

The collaboration between London’s A-COLD-WALL* and NikeLab first appeared back in January, and is now seeing the light of day. The deconstructed Air Force 1 High comes in a tonal colorway that A-COLD-WALL*’s Samuel Ross described as allowing “the shoe to breathe, and it feels very minimalistic as a result.” The sneakers will be available at an as-yet-unannounced London location on October 21.

Hanon x Diadora “St. Clair”

Hanon

To mark 35 years since Aberdeen FC defeated Real Madrid to win the 1983 European Cup, Scottish store Hanon has paid tribute to its hometown club — and the St. Clair ferry that took fans from Scotland to Gothenburg for the final — for a Diadora collaboration. The sneaker’s colorway references the ferry, while the “112” on the side marks the time of the winning goal and the rain pattern on the insole recalls the wet weather that night. The sneaker will drop in-store on October 25, before going online three days later.

adidas Originals by wings+horns Fall/Winter 2017

adidas Originals

Having worked together for several seasons, adidas Originals and Canadian brand wings+horns have revealed another strong collaboration. The collection features reworked adidas staples, with pieces such as a Bonded Wool Full Zip Hoodie and a Double Waffle Knit Pullover Hoodie, while the two brands also included some classic sneaker silhouettes in the capsule. The full collection will be available online via adidas and wings+horns, as well as select retailers worldwide on October 26.

adidas Originals x Sneakersnstuff NMD CS2 “Class of 1999” Pack

adidas Originals

Having teased the capsule for a while, the collaboration between adidas Originals and Swedish retailer Sneakersnstuff was finally unveiled this week. Titled “Class of 99,” the capsule sees the NMD CS2 silhouette wrapped in classic collegiate colorways of green/white and burgundy/gold. To accompany the sneakers, the retailer has also created heavyweight Russell Athletic tracksuits. The collection is set to drop on October 28 via Sneakersnstuff’s official website, with sneakers priced at $ 179 USD, and the tracksuits costing $ 69 USD for the hoodie and $ 59 USD for the sweatpants.

Traveling the island of Réunion

Looking to visit Europe for your next vacation, but perhaps you want to do Europe with a difference? How about going somewhere you’ve never been before, and would never normally consider? Welcome to the French island of Réunion – a place with no equal. What we love about this place is how you would never know you’re in Europe when visiting. There is such interesting diversity and geography here that you can get the experience of being somewhere much more tropical.

Trust us, this is the best island you’ve never heard of, and we feel like you owe it to yourself to explore and discover it. Located in the middle of the Indian Ocean, this enchanting destination offers so much beauty and excitement and is the perfect choice for your next vacation. This is our guide for anyone looking at traveling the island of Réunion, and wanting to make the most of their trip.

Arriving

The outermost point of the European Union, Réunion is the most prosperous island in the Indian Ocean. A part of France, but seemingly only in name alone, this island seems much more like you’re in the tropics than the EU! When you arrive, you’ll be greeted by lush, vibrant surroundings, stunning volcanic geography, and a wonderful blend of different cultures. Welcome to the most stunning island in Europe – this is going to change the entire way you view the European Union.

What to do

The amazing thing about Réunion Island is the sheer scope of what you can do here. Because of the lay of the land, and the topography of the island, there are some once-in-a-lifetime opportunities here. Swim in the crystal waters, and go snorkeling so you can enjoy the 15 km coral reef below the surface. There are over 100 different types of coral, and more than 500 different species of fish, and that’s before we even get to the whales and dolphins – simply stunning.

The centerpiece of this amazing island has got to be Piton de la Fournaise, a mesmerizing climbable volcano that is still active. You simply have to take a trip here and make sure you experience this natural wonder. You can do an amazing walk here, and you might even consider getting a guided tour as well. If you’re feeling adventurous, you might consider undergoing the 14km walk for several hours – it can be grueling, but it’s one of the most stunning and unique experiences in the world.

Cirques

There are three distinct cirques on the island – natural amphitheater-like valleys formed by erosion. Réunion Island has a trio of these, and they are pretty stunning, containing lush greenery, waterfalls, and amazing tree-lined forests. There’s a reason 40% of this island is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site, and you need to make sure you experience all of it as fully as you can. The cirques, along with the volcano, are the heartbeat of this stunning island, and demand exploration!

The island of Réunion is the best-kept secret in the European Union, and somewhere we bet you’ve never heard of before. This tropical, volcanic paradise is the only place we want to visit this year, and, hopefully, you feel the same way. Unite your heart and mind with a visit to the most stunning island in Europe.

Necker island – Paradise for the celebrities

Celebrities love a getaway, and, when they do go abroad, it’s usually somewhere hot and tropical. In fact, some celebs love it so much that they even buy homes abroad, or, in Richard Branson’s case, islands! Necker Island is part of the British Virgin Islands and located in the Caribbean, and the 74-acre island is owned entirely by Virgin business magnate Branson. The island is a popular celebrity hang out, with Branson and his family spending a huge amount of time there.

The island is a tropical paradise, and it’s easy to see why it is so popular among celebrities, as well as why Branson shelled out a small fortune for it. The island has been in the news a bit recently and is definitely a destination it would be good to know more about it. So we’re going to look a little closer at the history of the island, Branson’s purchase, and natural disasters that have affected the island.

History

Necker Island is part of the British Virgin Islands and located almost 4 miles from another Branson-owned island, Mosquito Island. The island was named after Johannes de Neckere, a Dutch commander from the 17th Century. The island didn’t really have any notable habitation until the 20th Century. In 1965 two journalists for The Daily Telegraph stayed on the island, but, of course, it wasn’t the opulent paradise it is today, and they left after one night! Richard Branson purchased the island and turned it into the tropical paradise it is today.

Richard Branson purchase

Branson had wanted to buy one of the British Virgin Islands for some time and was made aware of the fact they were up for sale in 1978. He visited and fell in love with Necker Island almost immediately. Branson was only just starting out in his career at the time and made a low offer for the island of $ 100,000 – it was promptly rejected. The following year, at the age of 28, he bought the island for a sum of just $ 180,000. One of the caveats of purchase was that the government stipulated that he must develop the island within four years or risk losing it.

This led to Branson sinking £10 million into the development and revamping of the island to turn it into his ideal vacation paradise. Spending three years, and using a lot of the local materials, Branson managed to turn the island into a home away from home and built a 10-bedroom mansion on a hill above the beach. The island can accommodate around 30 guests, and they will have the run of the island. In recent years Branson has spent more time at Necker and is currently living there with his family.

Natural disasters

There have been two natural disasters that have had a direct impact on the island in the last 10 years. The first came in 2011, when Tropical Storm Irene hit the island, and caused a blaze, which resulted in The Great House being burnt down. Branson was on the island at the time with family and friends, including his mother, and the actress Kate Winslet. Following the storm, The Great House was rebuilt and extended to what it is today.

The second time the island was affected by a natural disaster came recently, in September 2017, with Hurricane Irma. The hurricane is said to have destroyed most of the island, while Branson and his family sought shelter indoors. Nobody was hurt, but there was a lot of damage inflicted, and it seems like Branson might have a big repair job on his hands.

Necker Island is a tropical paradise we would all love to stay at if money were no object! But, the problem with tropical islands is that they are subjected to tropical weather, and that’s sometimes not a good thing. Hopefully, Branson can make the repairs needed on his island, and perhaps protect it from future bad weather.

The world’s smallest island

There are hundreds of islands all across the world, many of them the perfect destination for those seeking a sunny vacation. But others are known for rather different reasons, and these are often the most interesting. In fact, there are some islands that are classed as islands that you wouldn’t even think were, and this brings us onto our article about the world’s smallest island.

This is one of those things you might not think you’ll ever need to know, but it’s something that comes up now and again in pub quizzes. And now, by educating yourself with this article, you’ll be able to ace the question if it ever crops up! In order to understand the world’s smallest island, and why it has been categorized as such, we have to ask “What is an island?”

What is an island?

This is a tricky thing to categorize, and that’s why we have the government to do it for us. Much like what constitutes a city, the idea of what should constitute an island is somewhat contested. Fortunately, the British government is on hand to give us their definition of what constitutes an island. Well, in 1861 the categorized an island as being ‘any area of land inhabited by at least one sheep, or, with enough grass for a summer’s pasture of at least one sheep!” This seems a weirdly specific classification, and we love the fact that a sheep is used as the benchmark here.

There are other classifications though, and it’s important to know the difference between an island and a continent. Simply put, the difference seems to have a lot to do with size and geology. For instance, the world’s smallest continent is Australia, and the world’s largest island is Greenland. There is a big difference between the two, both in terms of size and geology. So, what of the smallest island in the world? What is it and where is it?

Smallest island in the world

Forget about visions of a miniature tropical island – the Guinness Book of World Records classes the smallest island in the world as Bishop Rock. This can be found on the peninsula of Cornwall, just off the Southwesternmost tip of Britain. Curiously though, Bishop Rock is too small to pasture any sheep whatsoever, and, at low tide is around the size of three tennis courts. So how is it classed as being an island?

Well, in the Middle Ages there were a lot of shipwrecks in the area, so it was decided that a lighthouse should be installed. The lighthouse keepers moved into the place in 1858, and this meant Bishop Rock was inhabited, therefore it was categorized as an island. However, the lighthouse has actually been automated since the early ’90s, so we do question how it can still be classed as an island – still, Guinness remains insistent. This now seems to be to do with the fact that it’s technically the world’s smallest island… With a building on it! Whether we will ever have a smaller island in the future is a subject of debate.

There are loads of islands all across the world, but, it seems as though there needs to be a definitive classification of exactly what makes something an island. We feel that having something like Bishop Rock classed as an island is a little silly, but then we don’t make the rules. Perhaps in the future, the rules will change, and we will have a much clearer idea of what makes an island an island.

Prepare to fall in love…

The smell of autumn’s in the air as the weather reports dip ever lower and lower, which means that it’s time to bust out that box of jumpers collecting dust in the back of the cupboard. While there’s some staples that always look chic every year, it’s worth putting a bit of money aside for a couple of stylish on-trend pieces – and our girl Hayley Hasselhoff took us on a shopping trip to show us her favourites.

We spent a day with our curve columnist poring over River Island’s latest Plus collection and she took us to school, picking out highlights you should get ready to splash out on.

While this matchy-matchy look could easily take you to the office, Hayley chose to play it cool and dress hers down. She paired her black check co-ords with a graphic white tee, as well as a few sparkly chokers for a dash of bling. On top of that, she threw on some fresh white sneaks to complete the look.

She said, ‘I am absolutely obsessed with this two-piece suit. It’s in trend with the checks and it is absolutely casual chic.’

SPECIAL SHOE DEAL UPDATE:

Tiree, Scotland’s ‘Sunshine Island’

As well as pristine beaches and the most sunshine hours in the UK, the inner Hebridean island has an abundance of wildlife – but is mercifully free of midges

The Ellis Island Snow Globe

The Ellis Island Snow Globe

In The Ellis Island Snow Globe, Erica Rand, author of the smart and entertaining book Barbie’s Queer Accessories, takes readers on an unconventional tour of Ellis Island, the migration station turned heritage museum, and its neighbor, the Statue of Liberty. By pausing to reflect on what is and is not on display at these two iconic national monuments, Rand focuses attention on whose heritage is honored and whose obscured. She also reveals the shifting connections between sex, money, material products, and ideas of the nation in everything from the ostensible father-mother-child configuration on an Ellis Island golf ball purchased at the gift shop to the multi-million dollar July 4, 1986 Liberty Weekend extravaganza celebrating the Statue’s centennial just days after the Supreme Court’s un-Libertylike decision upholding the antisodomy laws challenged in Bowers v. Hardwick.Rand notes that portrayals of the Statue of Liberty as a beacon for immigrants tend to suppress the Statue’s connections to people brought to this country by force. She examines what happened to migrants at Ellis Island whose bodies did not match the gender suggested by the clothing they wore. In light of contemporary ideas about safety and security, she examines the “Decide an Immigrant’s Fate” program, which has visitors to Ellis Island act as a 1910 board of inspectors hearing the appeal of an immigrant about to be excluded from the country. Rand is a witty, insightful, and open-minded tour guide, able to synthesize numerous diverse ideas—about tourism, immigration history, sexuality, race, ethnicity, commodity culture, and global capitalism—and to candidly convey her delight in her Ellis Island snow globe. And pen. And lighter. And back scratcher. And golf ball. And glittery pink key chain.
