LP Pathfinders: top posts from January 2018

This month’s blog round up includes a post on Penang’s street food scene with an innovative twist © Carlina Teteris / Getty Images

The beginning of a new year is a time for both reflection and preparation, and this month’s blog post submissions from our Pathfinders left us with a lot to think about. We’ve been wowed by offbeat wildlife encounters in Mexico, humbled by the sight of mighty eagle-assisted hunters in Kyrgyzstan and left pondering over current issues pervading the online travelsphere.

Though it was a tough task to narrow down our favourites, here’s our pick of travel blog posts from our Pathfinder community in January.

The Monarchs of Macheros, Mexico – Jessie Stringfield

It’s always refreshing to read a travel yarn that manages to completely capture the imagination, and Jessie’s piece on the monarch butterfly migration in Mexico sent us into a flutter. A lesser-known wondrous wildlife experience is brought to life through crisp, colourful images and engaging writing, with Jessie doing a great job of stressing the sustainability of the current infrastructure surrounding the phenomenon – an aspect of the experience that will hopefully endure as the spectacle grows in popularity.

Jessie is a blogger from the USA hoping to inspire everyone to get out and see the world. Sample more of her stories at slyharbison.com.

Atacama Desert: a no sleeping experience – Javi Lorbada

Javi’s photos are exceptional, and while the images in his visual journey across the Atacama Desert take centre stage, there’s also something enjoyable about his clipped, stringent prose-style that makes for great reading. Like any good inspirational post, his piece left us wanting to pack a tent and bed down for a night under the star-punctured Chilean skies; though our photos would likely pale in comparison.

Born in Madrid, Javi travels far and wide in search of the perfect shot. Keep tabs on his latest adventures at adventures.javilorbada.com.

The golden eagle hunters of Kyrgyzstan – Cynthia Bil

For most of us, one of the major joys of travel is witnessing customs so different from our own they instil you with a sense of awe. This sensation is embodied by Cynthia’s post on the eagle hunters of Kyrgyzstan: nomadic people who spend years training wild eagles to hunt for them as part of a practice dating back generations. A fascinating and informative read about humanity’s bond with the natural world is enhanced further by striking imagery of the hunters and their winged accomplices.

Cynthia and Niko are currently on an epic overland trip crossing six continents from Ireland to Alaska. Follow their journey at journalofnomads.com.

#realwomentravel – Annika Ziehen

Taking a delicate issue and exploring it with a sense of humour and poise, in this post Annika voices her thoughts over what she perceives as a lack of diversity among leading female Instagrammers in the travel industry. Annika is proactive in her approach, creating a campaign to showcase a selection of more eclectic female Insta-stars, with links to a number of wanderlust-inducing accounts included.

Annika is an self-confessed ‘truffle pig’ when it comes to rooting out destinations ideal for both adventure and luxury travel. Read more of her insights at midnightblueelephant.com.

Painting Penang: capturing the diverse food scene in watercolour – Dan and Lauren

The innovative format of Dan and Lauren’s article could spice up any topic, but its appeal is heightened when considering its subject matter. Penang’s George Town is a magnificent blend of whimsical street art and fantastic food stalls, which makes the pair’s decision to paint what they’ve eaten in the city a stroke of genius. By no means a gimmick, the post’s content is substantial, highlighting a selection of Penang’s celebrated eateries in addition to the excellent illustrations.

Dan and Lauren bring their travels to life through stories and scribbles. Keep track of their experiences at pocopilgrims.com.

LP Pathfinders: top Instagrams from January 2018

danahfreeman

New year, new travel experiences! Our intrepid Pathfinders have kicked off 2018 with a host of incredible snapshots, framing everything from the world’s busiest beaches to its most serene landscapes with their well-honed photography skills. Here are the five Instagram posts that stole the show this month…

Queulat National Park, Chile

‘Morning strolls in Chile are a must – those moments where you can enjoy the foggy, peaceful landscapes of this unique area of our world.’ – Javi, @javilorbada

Why we like it: Chile is home to some of planet earth’s most breathtaking natural wonders and panoramic landscapes, and Javi’s capture of this glacier mid-flow showcases them perfectly. The moody, stormy clouds and dark, thick forests that frame the shot give it an extra flourish of drama, and feel almost as though they are creeping into the camera lens itself.

Tulum, Mexico

A post shared by C Armenta (@armenta.c85) on

‘With its vibrant arts scene and world-class restaurants, Tulum has established itself as one of Mexico’s Premier tourist destination. Blessed with powdery sands, azure waters and looming palms trees, Tulum truly is a paradise.’ – Cristian, @armenta.c85

Why we like it: Travel photography isn’t only about capturing nature at its most dramatic, it’s also concerned with documenting travellers themselves. This image is a great example of that, what with the sun-worshipping beach bums populating the lower third of the image. With the palm tree acting as a central focus and the dazzling, turquoise sea a picturesque backdrop, this is a real moment-in-time shot, showcasing a typical day by the sea in Tulum.

Peak District, UK

‘The power of sunlight. Everything in the shadows is grey and dark, the sun makes everything warm and beautiful.’ – Raphael, @raphael.fyi

Why we like it: Raphael’s image is real proof that sometimes the simplest shots have the most impact. These gloriously sun-burnished trees of England’s Peak District act as a canvas of colour, with the light changing at exactly the right point of the photograph for maximum effect.

New York, USA

‘I was born in New York City. I lived in New York City. I had my 16th birthday dinner at Windows on the World. I worked at the World Trade Center. This is the first time I have been able to bring myself to see the Oculus and to visit the 911 Memorial. While staying at a hotel nearby I was so close, just three blocks away, and made myself go. I am glad I did.’ – Danah, @danahfreeman

Why we like it: Danah’s poignant capture of New York’s Oculus WTC is a masterclass in image framing, and a beautiful perspective of one of the city’s most important memorials. The Oculus’ fluted ceiling is rendered all the more stirring thanks to the camera angle, which also creates a reverent sense of calm.

Bettmeralp, Switzerland

‘We had a family holiday here over Christmas and whilst a lot of the time we were busy skiing, we also had plenty of time to enjoy the serenity of the place. On a morning walk, just past the village looking over to the Swiss Alps, we captured this beautiful shot. The scene embodied our feeling of peacefulness and anticipation of a fresh new year dawning.’ – Michelle and Lars, @lifejourney4two

Why we like it: What better way to welcome in the new year than with that untouched, pristine, glorious blanket of snow? The calming purple and blue hues of the streaming sun coming in from the edge of the frame make it appear all the more magical, and as for those mountains… they’re the kind of vista you’d want to wake up to every morning.

A beautiful afternoon at the Old Man of Storr, Isle of Skye, Scotland. ©Chee Seong/Getty Images.

Every month, we curate the best blog posts and Instagrams from our Lonely Planet Pathfinders.

This month’s feature is from videographer Zach Murray who takes us on a journey through Scotland’s mesmerising landscapes.

Last spring my wife and I went on an incredible road trip in Scotland. We travelled through beautiful mountains, along rocky clifftops, past fairy tale-like castles and stopped off in Edinburgh, Loch Ness and even the Isle of Skye.’

A Scotland adventure – Zach Murray

By combining stunning footage of the Scottish highlands with fun, personal excerpts of their encounters Zach truly brings this travel documentary to life. There are some great transitions throughout the film, which leads us between destinations seamlessly. We particularly enjoyed the (plentiful) sheep cameos!

Thank you to all the Pathfinders that submitted videos this month. Well done to Nomadus Films who guides us through the changing pace of a day in Istanbul. We also rather enjoyed joining The Common Wanderer in their video which documents their time in Swedish Lapland.

Keep your eyes peeled on our Thorn Tree forum where we’ll post the next submission call-out. Find out what else our Lonely Planet Pathfinders are up to (or sign up yourself!) by checking out the Pathfinders video playlist and don’t forget to subscribe to our YouTube channel.

The Month In Trump: January

It’s been another month of self-inflicted racial turmoil for President Donald Trump.

“I am not a racist,” Trump said while defending himself yet again. It’s become a familiar – and troubling – refrain.

During a recent meeting about immigration with congressional leaders, Trump reportedly asked why the U.S. admits people from “shithole countries” like Haiti and Africa. Trump also said the U.S. should allow more immigrants from Norway.

The White House denied the account and Trump spent a few days trying to convince Americans that he’s tolerant of immigrants of color.

But many people, including prominent congressional leaders, weren’t buying it.

House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said President Donald Trump’s controversial comments about certain “shithole” countries make clear that he is a “racist.”

Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), a civil rights icon, called Trump a racist, and the Congressional Black Caucus is preparing a censure motion in response to the president’s remarks.

While meeting at The World Economic Summit in Davos, Switzerland, Trump sidestepped questions about his alleged “shithole countries” comment during a meeting with the Rwandan President Paul Kagame.

“We have trade with Rwanda. And just generally I would say great relationships,” Trump said while sitting next to Kagame.

But African leaders who were meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia last week made it clear they have not forgotten Trump’s “shithole” comment – and they appear unforgiving.

Moussa Faki Mahamat, chairman of the African Union Commission, said Africa was angry with Trump.

“At the time of this session, Africa has yet to finish digesting the statements of the president of the United States which profoundly shocked with their messages conveying contempt, hate and desire to marginalize and exclude Africans,” he said.

The Trump administration – and Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson — is apologizing to Black journalist April Ryan after a top HUD official, Lynne Patton, called Ryan “Miss Piggy” in a now-deleted Tweet.

Armstrong Williams, a close friend of Carson, says Carson is “deeply disappointed.” Williams said Carson has reached out to Ryan to offer his apologies for Lynne Patton’s derogatory tweet. Ryan covers the White House for American Urban Radio Networks.

“I have known @AprilDRyan for 25 years. No one should be shamed and she has my profound apologies,” Williams tweeted Thursday. “I spoke with Dr. Carson and he was deeply disappointed by what occurred. He tried reaching out to April this morning, but wasn’t able to reach her. He offers his deepest apologies.”

Patton, who heads a HUD regional office, called her tweet “inexcusable,” saying she deeply regrets it.

“No one from this Administration contacted me. It was beneath me & I apologize to @AprilDRyan,” Patton wrote. “My parents raised me to respect others & I regret my response. I apologize to them, @SecretaryCarson & the Trump family. They deserved better.”

Meanwhile, Ryan told PEOPLE magazine the situation with Patton is “not resolved.”

“It’s not resolved, not at all,” Ryan said. “The things she said were terrible. She didn’t only talk about me, she talked about the company I worked for. All lies. It’s not over.”

“This is serious,” she added. “This is not a joke.”

********************************************************

Trump is being criticized for retweeting three racially inflammatory videos from a British far-right group that spews anti-Muslim rhetoric.

The videos depict Muslims assaulting people and smashing a statue of the Virgin Mary.

This is not the first time Trump has retweeted racist content on social media. Trump claims he will apologize for the tweets – and his defense, as always, was that he didn’t know the organization was racist.

“It was done because I am a big believer in fighting radical Islam terror, this was a depiction of radical Islamic terror,” Trump said in a recent television interview. “If you’re telling me they’re horrible people, horrible racist people I would certainly apologize if you would like me to do that. I am the least racist person that anybody is going to meet. Certainly I wasn’t endorsing anybody.”

Carey Mulligan Is Pretty In Pink on Vogue Australia’s January Cover

After revealing a total overhaul of the entire magazine back in September, Vogue Australia has been powering through with newfound confidence. After a gorgeous Margot Robbie cover for December, Aussie Vogue‘s cover for January is just as beautiful. Fresh from the cover of UK Harper’s Bazaar, Carey Mulligan is the title’s first cover girl of 2018, taking to the rooftops of New York City for a rather cinematic cover shoot. The actress was photographed by Emma Summerton wearing a show-stopping Giambattista Valli gown, styled by Christine Centenera.

Members of our forums were instant fans. “LOOOOOOOVE this! THAT is what I want to see in Vogue around the world: the haute couture, the drama, the over-the-top clothes/hair and makeup and pure glamour,” declared Bertrando3.

“Ooooo lovely!” sighed Lucien122.

“Not sure why, but I like this a lot. The focus is just on her and the dress,” admired forum member Benn98.

Also quick to show the cover some love was Miss Dalloway: “She rarely does it for me in print, but this cover is wonderful.”

“I’ve never been an admirer of full-length cover images but this cover here is simply beautiful. Vogue Australia didn’t need a redesign but I do adore the look of this. The cover images feels so… fashion and celebratory that I cannot help but to love it. Nice one, Vogue Australia!” vogue28 applauded.

SallyAlbright felt the same way. “Love this, dramatic and cool cover. I actually think Carey is quite underrated because she keeps her personal life so quiet. She’s definitely one of the most talented actresses in her age group, and seems to be very normal and cool as well,” she voiced.

WSL BWT Mavericks Challenge Competition Window to Open on January 3, 2018

HALF MOON BAY, California/USA (Thursday, December 14, 2017) – The World Surf League (WSL) is pleased to announce the official competition window of the Mavericks Challenge will run from January 3, 2018 through February 28, 2018. Following coordination with the governmental agencies involved with the production of the event and having now received approval of the Mavericks Challenge event plan by the California Coastal Commission, the WSL is excited to be able to open the window for the event immediately following the holiday blackout dates.

“We are thrilled to open the competition window for the Mavericks Challenge,” said Sophie Goldschmidt, WSL CEO. “Mavericks is a special location that adds a new level to the Big Wave Tour schedule. Hosting the women’s event at Mavericks was always a priority for us when we acquired the event. We are excited and ready to bring the Mavericks Challenge to the international stage for our fans to enjoy.“

The WSL’s acquisition of the permit for the contest was finalized in October following an agreement with Titans of Mavericks and Cartel Management, in which the world-famous Mavericks in Northern California will join WSL Big Wave Tour through 2021. Surfing competitions have run under various structures at Mavericks since 1999 and the event last ran in 2016, won by Nic Lamb (USA).

“Mavericks is the crown jewel of Big Wave surfing and the tour,” said Lamb. “It’s the only California big wave venue on the tour and perhaps the most feared. I’m excited at the direction we’re headed. It was only a matter of time for the women. I couldn’t be more excited to watch those heats and I’ll definitely be front row glued to the action.”

The Mavericks Challenge will form part of the 2017/18 BWT Northern Hemisphere Season. The men’s division will consist of a 24-man field, comprised of the Top 10 finishers of the 2016/2017 BWT season, 6 event wildcards, 3 BWT wildcards, 1 injury wildcard, and the Top 4 Surfline Overall Performance of the Year Award recipients. The 6 event wildcards for the Mavericks Challenge will be selected by a committee made up of Mavericks legends and experts.

“Having the addition of the Mavericks event on the Big Wave Tour is a huge thing for the men and women,” said Paige Alms (HAW), 2017 Pe’ahi Challenge winner and 2016 Women’s Big Wave Champion. “It’s going to be an amazing opportunity to see another big wave spot, one of the best in the world, and have an empty lineup with the best surfers, best conditions and the best waves. Mavericks is a really perfect wave and one of the most powerful big waves in the world. With the inclusion of Mavericks as a part of the tour, I think fans will be seeing some of the best big waves ridden, hopefully the conditions are just all-time. We will see some of the best waves ridden there and also some of the most heavy wipeouts, people really like to push themselves over the ledge there.”

The world’s best female big wave surfers will also have the opportunity to compete at Mavericks this upcoming season for the first time ever. The WSL Commissioner’s Office has worked with a local committee made up of Mavericks surfing icons to select six of the best female big wave surfers. The committee considered performance results from the 2016 WSL Big Wave Awards, experience surfing at Mavericks, and overall big wave experience at all big wave locations around the world.

“The addition of Mavericks on this year’s Big Wave Tour will ensure that the tour has the three most challenging big waves on the planet with Peahi, Nazaré and now Mavericks,” said Mike Parsons, WSL BWT Commissioner. “Mavericks is the most challenging big wave on the west coast and is unique in how intense and steep the takeoff is. The event will undoubtedly challenge the world’s best men and female surfers like no other wave. This will be a fantastic moment for women’s big wave surfing. The best female big wave surfers will get to showcase their skills on the heaviest wave on the west coast.”

The 2017/2018 WSL Big Wave Tour has completed its first two events of the season with Kai Lenny (HAW) winning the Puerto Escondido Challenge in Mexico and Ian Walsh (HAW) and Paige Alms (HAW) taking out the Pe’ahi Challenge.

Formed in 2009, the Big Wave Tour joined the WSL in 2014, producing historic performances at never-before-contested venues such as Nazaré in Portugal and Pe’ahi on Maui’s North Shore. Monitoring swell systems and weather patterns throughout the season, the Big Wave Tour only runs events when surf reaches the 30-foot-plus mark, mobilizing on 72 hours’ notice with an international field of Big Wave men’s and women’s athletes.

Brioni to Show in Paris in January

MILAN – Brioni’s first collection by new creative director Nina-Maria Nitsche will be presented in Paris on January 20 during the city’s Men’s Fashion Week. This will not be a runway show but a presentation.
Nitsche was appointed to the role at the storied Italian men’s wear wear company in June, succeeding Justin O’Shea, who was pushed out after only a six-month stint. The brand is now helmed by former Agent Provocateur chief executive officer Fabrizio Malverdi, who joined Brioni in April, charged with accelerating the international expansion of the elite Italian tailor following a period of turmoil. He succeeded Gianluca Flore.
Before Brioni, Nitsche had joined Vetements in September 2016 but left when the company relocated to Zurich from Paris earlier this year. She was previously a veteran at Maison Martin Margiela, which she joined in 1989, working closely with the founding designer for 23 years. After Margiela’s  resignation, in 2009, Nitsche took over the creative direction of the brand.
O’Shea staged his first and only collection for Brioni in Paris during Haute Couture Week in July 2016. Under previous creative director Brendan Mullane, Brioni had shown in Milan, both through the runway and presentation formats. Mullane, who reported to then-ceo Francesco Pesci,  helped

Bobby Flay Cheated With January Jones, Claims Estranged Wife In Court Docs

Bobby Flay and Stephanie March’s divorce is not what you’d call amicable.

The couple split in early April after 10 years of marriage and March is challenging the prenup under which Flay is required to pay the actress $ 5,000 a month.

In Touch reports that March is challenging the prenup on the grounds that Flay allegedly cheated on her with three women, including actress January Jones.

A source familiar with the case told the magazine that the former “Law & Order: SVU” actress is claiming in court papers that the 50-year-old celebrity chef “committed adultery” with Jones several times in the in early 2010. The magazine also reports that March has accused Flay of cheating with a food stylist and his assistant.

Page Six previously reported that it’s believed the couple’s prenup had no infidelity clause, and if true, March’s claims likely would not help her cause. However, TMZ reported that the actress also filed documents claiming that it’s her “amazing palate” that is responsible for his success.

Reps for Flay and Jones have yet to respond to requests for comment.

Dr. Brent Fogel: Santa Monica, California, January 18, 2015

2015-03-03-APBDKINDSIGHTDRBRENTFOGELSANTAMONICAJAN182015sized.jpg

It was one or a combination of Fate, Destiny, Kismet, Serendipity, Chance, Luck or other that brought Dr. Fogel and I together. I had been searching for a diagnosis for my worsening mobility, balance and other bodily function impairment for some five years, at multiple facilities and with many practitioners both in and beyond Los Angeles, to no definitive avail, when my case came to the attention of Dr. Fogel, at UCLA. One thing that impressed me early on was Dr. Fogel’s reporting. Doctors write lengthy reports after seeing patients, as a key part of the patient’s medical record. I had seen many reports by doctors through the course of my quest and, while all well intentioned and laced with professional jargon, most if not all reports I had read up to this time contained inaccuracies and/or omissions. But Dr. Fogel’s reporting was on another level. It was one hundred percent accurate in detail and fully complete, like no other I had seen. This in itself won me over and gave me full confidence in him, something that I hadn’t known up till that point with other specialists. I really believed that Dr. Fogel could give me diagnosis. When there is confidence, all parties are empowered. In late 2010, after over seven years of testing and hoping, Dr. Fogel gave me a definitive diagnosis of Adult Polyglucosan Body Disease, a rare, untreatable, inexorably worsening genetic condition that affects mainly Ashkenazi Jews (Eastern European heritage). Dr. Fogel got me into a clinical trial at Baylor in Dallas and, while this didn’t pan out, it led me to connect with Susan Coddon, Dr. Jeffrey Levenson and other members of the Adult Polyglucosan Body Disease Research Foundation (www.apbdrf.org), a tight knit group of fellow sufferers and carers, mostly around my age, who together wield and radiate a powerful dynamic of experience, wisdom, concern and pro-activism. One initiative is that I now dedicate my photography exhibits to raising awareness and support for APBD. Here, I’ve invited Dr. Fogel to speak at the opening reception of my current exhibit in Santa Monica and, not surprisingly, he is a raconteur of the highest order, giving attendees a comprehendible understanding of APBD. Whether by Fate, Chance or other, I am eternally grateful to Dr. Fogel for my diagnosis and all else resulting from our connection, and for illuminating my path.

Digital forensics deals with the acquisition, preservation, examination, analysis and presentation of electronic evidence. Networked computing, wireless communications and portable electronic devices have expanded the role of digital forensics beyond traditional computer crime investigations. Practically every crime now involves some aspect of digital evidence; digital forensics provides the techniques and tools to articulate this evidence. Digital forensics also has myriad intelligence applications. Furthermore, it has a vital role in information assurance – investigations of security breaches yield valuable information that can be used to design more secure systems.
