World’s oldest bread found at prehistoric site in Jordan

Charred remains of a flatbread baked about 14,500 years ago in a stone fireplace at a site in northeastern Jordan have given researchers a delectable surprise: people began making bread, a vital staple food, millennia before they developed agriculture.

Michael B. Jordan Stopped Dying On Camera After Mom Couldn’t Take It

Michael B. Jordan

Michael B. Jordan has made a point to remove a major source of stress for his mother, Donna Jordan.

The actor, who most recently starred in “Black Panther,” has decided that he will never play a character whose death happens on screen – all to stop his “super emotional” mom from losing it, he revealed in an extensive interview.

“When I shot my death scene in ‘The Wire,’ she was on set. And the (production assistants) kept coming to me and saying: ‘You may want to check on your mom,’” the 31-year-old actor told The New York Times.

“I go see her, and she’s sitting there bawling. I’m just a kid. I’m going, ‘Come on, Ma. You’re embarrassing me.’ And after ‘Fruitvale Station,’ I was like, ‘Man, this is really affecting her.’”

So Jordan began taking on roles where he didn’t die: “Fantastic Four” and “Creed” and “That Awkward Moment.” In addition to the survival of his characters, he had an ulterior motive other than making his mom happy.

“I want people to see me win,” he told The Times. “I want audiences to see me ending up on top — not dying.”

Jordan Peele to Produce Lorena Bobbitt Docuseries

Jordan Peele

Jordan Peele’s next project will be a far cry from his 2017 hit, Get Out, as the Oscar-winner is set to executive produce a docuseries on Lorena Bobbit.

Lorena has been green-lit at Amazon, according to Variety, and will comprised of four parts delving into the case of husband and wife John and Lorena Bobbitt. In 1993, the pair made headlines when Lorena cut off her husband’s penis, later claiming she did it because he raped and physically abused her.

The series will highlight the Bobbit case as a seminal moment in the development of the 24 hour news cycle, as well as increasing the validity of sensational media coverage. The show is also set to explore the idea of sexual assault within marriage.

“When we hear the name ‘Bobbitt’ we think of one of the most sensational incidents to ever be catapulted into a full blown media spectacle,” Peele tole Variety. “With this project, Lorena has a platform to tell her truth as well as engage in a critical conversation about gender dynamics, abuse, and her demand for justice. This is Lorena’s story and we’re honored to help her tell it.”

Heather Schuster, head of unscripted for Amazon Originals, had this to say about Peele joining the fold: “Jordan has proven himself as a captivating voice of social critique and we are excited to work with him on this project. Lorena reframes Lorena Bobbitt’s story around issues of sexism and domestic abuse and offers Prime members an exclusive new view into how America got her story wrong and maybe continues to get it wrong.”

Jordan Peele Is Making a Lorena Bobbitt Docuseries From Her Perspective

In the wake of his success with Get Out, comedian-turned-Oscar-winning writer and director Jordan Peele has a new project to make people squirm in their seats. Peele is producing a four-part docuseries on the Lorena Bobbitt trial for Amazon.

If you aren’t familiar with the case, in 1993, Bobbitt cut off her abusive husband’s penis and threw it under a bush where it was later recovered and reattached. At her trial, Bobbitt’s team argued that she had suffered a psychotic break after yet another assault by her violent husband and should not be held responsible for the crime. The jury agreed and Bobbitt was freed, setting a precedent for how abused women are treated in court and for the way stories like this are covered by the media.

“When we hear the name ‘Bobbitt’ we think of one of the most sensational incidents to ever be catapulted into a full blown media spectacle,” Peele said in a statement, according to Variety. “With this project, Lorena has a platform to tell her truth as well as engage in a critical conversation about gender dynamics, abuse, and her demand for justice. This is Lorena’s story and we’re honored to help her tell it.”

The series, called Lorena, will reexamine the events from Bobbitt’s perspective and will look at the lasting impact of the gruesome case in the treatment of domestic abuse in courts and in media coverage of such cases.

It will be produced through Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions studio and directed by documentarian Joshua Rofé. The series does not yet have a release date.

Pathfinders pics: roadtrip through Jordan

monicasumaPP

Lonely Planet Pathfinder Monica Suma recently explored Jordan’s cinematic sights, from Amman’s red-hued hills to the ancient city of Petra, and the desert of Wadi Rum – punctuating her journey through this fascinating country with compulsory breaks for delicious falafel and cardamom coffee!

I set out wanting to discover the majesty of Petra, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, indulge in Jordan’s foodie scene and to tap into Amman’s creativity that I had read so much about. I was keen to travel light, with little more than a backpack, allowing me to travel by various modes of transport.

Taking in Amman’s street art

A post shared by Monica Suma (@monicasuma) on

The trip started in Amman, Jordan’s capital. While it’s not the most accessible city I’ve ever visited, its 19 hills make for some picturesque vistas. Its creative scene is equally as impressive with colourful murals, original caricatures, and intricate calligraphy art at every turn.

A tour of artsy Amman

A post shared by Monica Suma (@monicasuma) on

My favourite part of Amman was discovering the city’s progressive and up-and-coming design scene, where hip cafes and enticing art galleries abound. It’s a great place to get inspired by the local creative industries and meet incredible artists.

The world’s oldest map of the Middle East

A post shared by Monica Suma (@monicasuma) on

One of my most interesting adventures in Jordan was seeing the world’s oldest map of the Middle East. Drawn up during the Byzantine period, this map is now housed inside the Saint George Church in Madaba (known as ‘mosaic city,’ and the largest Christian town in Jordan), just an hour’s drive south from Amman. The map is made entirely out of mosaics dating from 6th century AD, seen here in the lower part of the photo. While a significant part of the mosaic has chipped away, this ancient map is a marvellous depiction of Christian history in the Middle East, featuring detailed representations of biblical sites such as Jerusalem.

The Dead Sea, the local way

A post shared by Monica Suma (@monicasuma) on

No trip to Jordan would be complete without stopping off by the Dead Sea, one of the most fascinating places in the world, with its thick salt formations and otherworldly landscape.

Finding my inner Indiana Jones at Petra

A post shared by Monica Suma (@monicasuma) on

Petra, Jordan’s most visited sight, was next on the list. That first glimpse of Petra was breathtaking – you’ve seen it a thousand times in photos and movies, and suddenly it’s right there, this orange- and pink-hued giant towering in front of you. To avoid crowds and the midday heat, aim to go there as early as possible. You’ll also have better light for your pictures!

Bedouin life in Wadi Rum desert

A post shared by Monica Suma (@monicasuma) on

My last stop was the Wadi Rum desert (and my favourite part of the whole trip), where the only traffic is from traversing camels and the only noise is from a crackling fire. The best way to experience the desert is to camp out under the stars, taking in the constellations with a warm cup of sweetened, herbal tea. I rounded off my desert adventures with a jeep safari – a great way to explore the seemingly endless sandstone valley.

What Is An ‘Inclusion Rider’ and Why Is Michael B. Jordan Using One?

When Frances McDormand closed her Oscar acceptance speech last weekend with the phrase “inclusion rider,” very few had ever heard the term based on the scanty applause in the audience and the spike in Google searches.

Deemed the Rooney Rule for Hollywood, Stacy L. Smith, who directs the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative at the University of Southern California, introduced the idea in a 2014 column:

What if A-list actors amended every contract with an equity rider? The clause would state that tertiary speaking characters should match the gender distribution of the setting for the film, as long as it’s sensible for the plot. If notable actors working across 25 top films in 2013 had made this change to their contracts, the proportion of balanced films (about half-female) would have jumped from 16 percent to 41 percent. Imagine the possibilities if a few actors exercised their power contractually on behalf of women and girls. It wouldn’t necessarily mean more lead roles for females, but it would create a diverse onscreen demography reflecting a population comprised of 50 percent women and girls.

An “inclusion rider” is a clause that actors and actresses can ask to be inserted into their contract that would require diversity among a film’s cast and crew.

In light of the global success of the Black Panther movie, actor Michael B. Jordan announced yesterday that he will be adopting the diversity clause for all the projects his production company, Outlier Society takes on going forward.

“In support of the women & men who are leading this fight, I will be adopting the Inclusion Rider for all projects produced by my company Outlier Society,” the post read. “I’ve been privileged to work with powerful woman & persons of color throughout my career & it’s Outlier’s mission to continue to create for talented individuals going forward.”

The announcement comes just a day after Netflix CEO’s Reed Hastings said his company has no interests in doing such a thing. Reed said he would rather have his staff speak with filmmakers to determine how diverse the overall cast and crew on a film is.

“We’re not so big on doing everything through agreements,” Hastings said at a press briefing in his office. “We’re trying to do things creatively.”

In January, comedian and Oscar-winning actress Monique called for a boycott of the movie streaming service over gender and pay disparity issues, noting that Netflix allegedly offered her $ 500,000 for a comedy special while offering millions in compensation to Amy Schumer, Dave Chappelle, and Chris Rock.

While the company, which has an estimated 117 million subscribers continues to play an important role in Hollywood, putting on more shows with diverse casts and producers is a great example of the easiest, quickest, and least permanent execution of diversity, noted Black Enterprise Editor-at-Large Alfred Edmond Jr.

While the company deserves praise for the diversity of its shows, its board is made up of white men and five women, with African Americans only making up 4% of its staff and leadership.

‘Black Panther’ Star Michael B. Jordan Teams Up With Brisk Iced Tea to Empower Urban Creatives

Brisk, a billion-dollar iced tea beverage brand owned by PepsiCo, announced the launch of the Creators Class program in partnership with Michael B. Jordan to provide emerging artists in urban areas with the opportunity to collaborate with and be mentored by industry leaders. Young creatives selected to participate in the initiative will gain real-world experience and exposure by working with established members in the film industry, visual arts, and writing to develop a special project. As a partner with Brisk, Jordan, who stars in Marvel’s groundbreaking Black Panther film, will give three lucky creators an apprenticeship with his production company.

“Brisk encourages the same boldness and creativity that I strive for in my work and with my production company, Outlier Society,” said Jordan in a statement. “That’s why I’m honored to be a part of the Creators Class and offer up-and-coming hustlers the opportunity to work on this special Outlier Society project.”

To promote the Creators Class program, Jordan directed, produced, and starred in an online video that spotlights a street artist’s hard work and creative hustle. In the ad, the 31-year-old actor prepares for his role in Black Panther while the artist simultaneously paints a mural of the Black Panther superhero. Brisk also celebrated the launch of Creators Class by hosting an exclusive Black Panther event in Los Angeles during NBA All-Star Weekend.

Melanie Watts, director of Marketing at Brisk, said the drink giant partnered with Marvel Studios and invited some of the talent behind Black Panther to join the Creators Class to “empower aspiring creators in the urban arts by providing real opportunities, mentorship, and game-changing industry exposure.”

The marketing campaign also serves to attract millennials and Gen Zers, consumers that Pepsi has struggled to reach. There’s a chance that the effort will connect with Gen Zers based on a popular film that defies negative perceptions of women and people of color and speaks to the generation’s hunger for success—two factors that cause-driven Gen Z finds important. “These generations tend to embrace creative efforts and innovation while shunning traditional views of gender roles and racial stereotypes, which appears to align with the Creators Class program and spirit of the Black Panther movie,” states MarketingDive.com.

Interested participants can apply to the Creators Class by visiting www.briskcreatorsclass.com up until March 2.

Michael Jordan’s Daughter Jasmine Jordan Debuts “Heiress” Sneakers

Michael Jordan has apparently passed down the entrepreneurial genes to his 24-year-old daughter Jasmine Jordan, who added her flair and touch to the venerable Air Jordan brand. The eldest of Jordan’s three daughters debuted a new sneaker aptly titled “Heiress” but explains in an interview with ESSENCE that the name of the sneaker is far more than a title she wields as part of basketball royalty.

ESSENCE writes:

Settling into her new role as brand representative in the Charlotte, North Carolina area for Jordan Brand, Jasmine debuted the Air Jordan “Heiress” XI, a feminine take on the classic shoe. And let’s just say, we’re definitely adding them to our Christmas wish list.

“The Ones and the Elevens have always been my favorite Jordan sneaker,” youngest child of the world famous hooper and his ex-wife, Juanita Jordan told ESSENCE. “Our design team loved the fact that the Elevens are already an iconic shoe based off of my dad’s history with it. They wanted to create a more feminine design and give consumers an extended girl’s size. With this design, people get a shoe that’s elevated luxury and a holiday season shoe that is very elegant, clean and classy.”

And as explained in the article excerpt above, the Heiress is indeed a classic looking shoe with just the right touch of flair for the ladies who love rocking Js but want something that compliments their look without looking like straight hoopers. For Jordan, the term heiress shouldn’t be limited to its dictionary definition or gender norms.

“I just want to people to understand that as corny as it may be, anybody and everybody can be an Heiress. Heiress isn’t just true to it’s actual definition. In all actuality everybody can be an heiress because it is just another form of being a boss,” Jordan told ESSENCE.

Right on to that.

Michael Jordan Gifts $7 Million To ‘Under Served Areas Of Charlotte’

NBA icon and Hornets owner Michael Jordan is donating $ 7 million to launch two medical clinics in troubled Charlotte communities.

According to reports, Jordan’s gift will fund Novant Health Michael Jordan Family Clinics to be built in north and northwest Charlotte. One will be at 3149 and 3153 Freedom Drive; the other will be in the Brightwalk development on Statesville Avenue, per the Charlotte Observer.

“Michael really wanted to do something personally, he and his family, in the North Carolina area, separate from the work we’ve done with the Hornets,” Jordan spokeswoman Estee Portnoy said, adding that the idea for the clinics emerged during Michael’s discussions with Novant — the Hornets’ official health care provider — about ways to help poor populations in Charlotte.

In a statement, Jordan said he was proud to partner with Novant “to bring critical health services to under-served areas of Charlotte and the thousands of North Carolinians with limited access to health care.”

Jordan said he hoped the clinics “will help provide a brighter and healthier future for the children and families they serve.”

“Novant has been the official health care provider for the Hornets since the inception of the franchise in 2004 when they were known as the Charlotte Bobcats.”

“Michael’s been a wonderful partner for us at Novant Health,” CEO Carl Armato said in an Observer interview. “This is not the first time that he personally has had such a dedication and commitment to the community and to our patients.”

Armato said the donation will help accelerate Novant’s ability “to provide remarkable care in some of these areas that have been under-served.”

“Novant said the two clinics will offer not only family physicians and pediatricians but also behavioral health, physical therapy, social work, oral health and family planning services.”

Jordan Peele Calls ‘Get Out’ A Documentary After Golden Globe Deems It A Comedy

Jordan Peele’s “Get Out” was first marketed by Universal as a horror movie upon its Feb. 24 release. This week, the racially-charged box office smash is being submitted to Golden Globes voters as a comedy – and Peele is not amused.

“Get Out is a documentary,” Peele tweeted on Wednesday morning.

The Hollywood Foreign Press, which presents the Golden Globes annually, agreed to accept the submission of “Get Out” in its comedy/musical category, where it might square off against such potential nominees as “The Big Sick,” “I, Tonya,” “The Disaster Artist,” “Lady Bird” and “The Greatest Showman.” Awards pundits have already pegged it a likely contender regardless of its placement.

Released to theaters in February after a strong showing at Sundance the previous month, “Get Out” was a runaway hit, grossing a massive $ 33.4 million across its opening weekend en route to a $ 253.4 million worldwide haul on a miniscule $ 4.5 million budget. Its financial strides have only helped its cause in the race for awards attention, and, after the Academy invited a record 774 new faces to join its ranks this summer, several invitees told EW the film was high on their list of best picture choices at this early stage of the game.

Nominations for the 75th Golden Globe Awards will be announced Monday, Dec. 11, with the awards telecast to follow on Sunday, Jan. 7 at 8:00 p.m. ET on NBC.

Peele spoke to “CBS This Morning” Wednesday about exploring the “deep horror of racism” in “Get Out,” saying, “There are no jokes in the movie.”

Kenny Lattimore Releases Official Video For ‘Push’ Ft. Claudia Jordan

Directed by Dale “Rage” Resteghini (Nicki Minaj, Fall Out Boy, Soulja Boy) and starring actress and TV/radio personality Claudia Jordan (“The Real Housewives of Atlanta”), the video for Push by Kenny Lattimore portrays the song’s storyline about a man realizing his mistake in pushing away a relationship with a good woman.

“The sound doesn’t conform,” explains Lattimore, according to Singer’s Room. “One of the things that I did think about was staying true to myself, and the other was the fact that I remember the eighties well. We wanted to create something contemporary and timeless.”

Best-known for his Grammy-nominated, No. 6 R&B hit “For You,” Lattimore also scored two top 10-charting R&B duet albums with singer Chanté Moore: Things That Lovers Do and the gospel/R&B double-CD Uncovered/Covered. His catalog also includes the 2008 covers album Timeless and the 2016 holiday album A Kenny Lattimore Christmas, which reached No. 3 on Billboard’s Top Gospel Albums chart.

Lattimore’s upcoming 9th studio album, Vulnerable, available October 13, marks the first release under the partnership between the Lattimore’s Sincere Soul Records and Liger Enterprises. The latter is a full-service global entertainment company launched by music veteran Ron A. Spaulding and Major League Baseball Hall of Fame member Frank Thomas.

Kenny Lattimore is currently touring, performing around the country.

A Pair Of Kobe Bryant Air Jordan 3’s Sold For $30K

Authentic Air Jordan PE’s (Player Exclusives) are considered grails to sneaker collectors all around the world. So it should surprise no one that a pair of Kobe Bryant issued Air Jordan 3 PE’s in Lakers colors just sold for $ 30,000.

Listed as “BRAND NEW OUT THE BOX,” the rare as a white peacock pair of kicks were put up for auction on Ebay and after 53 bids ended up selling for what it costs to put a down payment on a brand new house. They weren’t even autographed, b.

At the end of the day though what people do with their money is their business and if you have $ 30 G’s to blow on a pair of sneakers then hey, more power to you.

We just hope the winning bidder knows that his life isn’t going to turn out like Bow Wow’s in Like Mike. You might still be trash on the courts, homie.

Former Lead Jordan Sneaker Designer Raises $7 Million for His New Business, Super Heroic

Jason Mayden (Image: Impact Theory)

Super Heroic, a company that creates children’s play and sports clothing as well as other products, and was launched by a former designer for Brand Jordan shoes, just raised $ 7 million in funding.

Jayson Mayden is a co-founder of Super Heroic. Growing up on the South Side of Chicago, his dream was to work for Nike designing shoes for Michael Jordan. Surviving in a neighborhood inundated with violence is an understatement, but Mayden far surpassed that. He became the first African American to get a design internship with Nike and went on to design shoes for Eminem, Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul, and Jordan himself, not to mention creating the redesign for the “Monarch,” the highest-grossing shoe in Nike’s history. He eventually held the title as Senior Design Global Director for Brand Jordan.

Currently, he holds accolades from Stanford’s D.School, (Hasso Plattner Institute of Design at Stanford), as an advisory board member and is a former designer for Accel Partners, a well-recognized venture fund in Silicon Valley.

Mayden recently dove into his new venture, Super Heroic, a play focused brand born out of disruptive innovation.

So far, the brand includes apparel focused around how children play, an app designed to keep kids moving, and several other products created to foster children’s imaginations.

Mayden recently sat down with Tom Bilyeu, host of Impact Theory, to discuss the journey to his success.

Tom Bilyeu: Dude, your story is an insane tale of what happens when you are willing to work yourself nearly to death. How did you get the mentality? Man, that’s crazy!

Jason Mayden: There are several things that I fundamentally believe that are true in terms of difficulty and what it gives you. For me, being born on the South Side of Chicago in a blue-collared environment, you don’t make excuses for yourself.

There is no such thing as anyone starting life behind the start line. I look at myself as being equal to everyone I’m in a room with and the separation between where I want to go and where I am is my work ethic.

Tom Bilyeu: Were there other things that Jordan taught you specifically about becoming the greatest or just getting ahead?

Jason Mayden: The people you surround yourself with. Everybody that you put in your inner circle should have one thing that they do better than you. That way you’re always a student.

The greatest leaders on the planet are also the greatest curators. They don’t create a lot but, they curate thoughts and they put it together and they put their perspective on it. I try to do the same thing. I’m like man, this person’s amazing at this, this person’s amazing at that, how can I learn from them and then put my spin on it.

Tom Bilyeu: When people ask me how do you get ahead, how do you be successful, it’s like you have to open yourself up to actually being changed, like when you read a book, stop and really think, how can I use this, how do I put it to work. Is that something that’s just always come naturally to you or was that an insight someone gave you?

Jason Mayden: You know, I think it came naturally because as a kid, you know I joke about being a middle child, I joke about being quiet but, when you’re quiet and you’re smaller than everyone and you’re an introvert, you can hear more than everyone else because you don’t talk that often, so you pull in information and you can get better at it.

Just by being quiet and still and being invisible, that became my super power. I was able to see everything and learn and I got better and added the skill set so when it was my time to have something to say, I felt more confident.

You have to acknowledge that change is a part of life. You grow up, you leave home, you change addresses, you change jobs, change is a constant theme in our existence. The sooner you become comfortable with that concept, you’re free.

So many gems dropped here. Peep the entire interview below, and come see Mayden live at Black Enterprise’s TechConneXt Summit in October.

Michael Jordan: Could beat LaVar Ball with just one leg

Michael Jordan is quite sure he’d beat LaVar Ball in a game of one-on-one … even "if I was one-legged." Months after Ball made headlines by saying he "would kill" Jordan "back in my heyday," the Hall of Famer finally discussed Ball’s comments. "You got to understand the source. I think he played college, maybe?" Jordan told campers at his Flight School basketball camp Monday.?"He averaged 2.2 points a game. Really? "It doesn’t deserve a response, but I’m [going to] give it to you because you asked the question. I don’t think he could beat me if I was one-legged." Ball, the father of? Los Angeles Lakers rookie Lonzo Ball, fired the first shot in March. "I would just back [Jordan] in and lift him off the ground and call a foul every time he fouls me when I do a jump hook to the right or the left," Ball told USA Today Sports as to how he’d beat Jordan. "He cannot stop me one-on-one. He better make every shot ’cause he can’t go…

Jordan Spieth

Meltdowns in major tournaments have a way of wrecking golfers. Jordan Spieth was hailed as the game’s next great after winning the 2015 Masters and U.S. Open at the age of 21. Spieth was poised to add a second straight green jacket the next year until he lost it on the 12th hole at Augusta, hitting a quadruple bogey that cost him the win.

Spieth was headed for a similar fate in the final round of the British Open on July 23, after he sliced a catastrophic tee shot on 13. Fellow American Matt Kuchar, with whom he had been dueling all day, seemed sure to capitalize. But then Spieth found a resolve that had eluded him at the Masters, somehow saving bogey and then reeling off an onslaught of birdies–plus an eagle–to win the title by three strokes.

With the triumph, the baby-faced Spieth joins Jack Nicklaus as the only golfers to win three different majors before the age of 24. If he can take home the PGA Championship, which tees off Aug. 10 in Charlotte, N.C., he’ll become just the sixth to win all four.

Jordan Peele Is The First Black Writer-Director To Land $100M Debut

“Get Out” is one of 2017’s biggest blockbusters and its success has officially earned the film its rightful place in movie history.

As of Tuesday, “Get Out,” a psychological thriller about racism, has earned $ 110 million in box-office sales, making Jordan Peele the first black writer-director to break the coveted $ 100 million threshold with a feature debut.

Peele humbly acknowledged his accomplishment Tuesday:

There have been several black directors who have had their feature debut pass that mark, as noted by BlackFilm.com, however, none have earned that status with their own screenplay. “Get Out” is also the fastest film from production company Blumhouse to reach the $ 100 million mark, earning that status in just 16 days, according to Deadline.

Peele, a comedian widely known for his Comedy Central show “Key & Peele,” made his directorial debut with “Get Out.” The film was made on just a $ 4.5 million budget and has since become a real standout in Hollywood.

“Get Out” follows the experiences of a young black man who heads to a rural town to visit his white girlfriend’s family for the first time. The weekend away turns out to be a puzzling and suspense-filled trip where the young man realizes that the white people who live in and visit the home don’t have the best intentions.

The movie has earned much acclaim among moviegoers and critics alike, who have praised the film’s brilliant and mind-bending take on race. Some film reviewers have called it a “watershed feat,” while others credit Peele for directing a clever thriller that explores various aspects of being black in America. The film even earned a 100 percent score on the film review site Rotten Tomatoes in its first 40 reviews, and the good news doesn’t stop there.

Peele said he plans on releasing an entire series of “social thrillers” that fuse horror with daily human experiences. He plans to unveil four more films that follow this theme within the next decade.

“There’s several other ideas that have been germinating for the past eight years, and I’d like to do all of them,” Peele told The Verge in a recent interview. “As far as I’m concerned, my next decade or so — along with helping other untapped artists, or untapped identities, find their own platforms as a producer — I want to write and direct these four other social thrillers.”

Nejla: Al Salt, Jordan, October 25, 2008

2017-01-22-1485067323-8335177-Kindsight2NejlaBintAsemAlSaltJordanOct252008imageonlysized.jpg

It’s the last day of principal photography on Transformers 2. We’re in Al-Salt, a hilly area about half an hour outside of Amman. Formerly the capital of Jordan, Al-Salt has streets lined with shops of all kinds, from which rise winding roads reaching into hills dense with apartments weathered by time, with character and teeming with life. As I walk up the sidewalk from our basecamp, groups of beautiful children, some barefoot, tag along, shouting greetings and questions in a language I cannot understand. But they understand my camera and I make some photos, letting a few of them use my camera to make photos as well. Later, up the hill, we’re filming in a small courtyard surrounded by old apartments. A young child next to her father peers out their window at the filming. I raise my camera for a photo with the father’s assent, but the child shies away into the shadows. A young woman onlooker, who seems not of the neighborhood yet very at home in the courtyard, speaks in Arabic to the young girl, convincing her to stay by her Dad for the picture. I thank the young woman who, speaking fluent English tells me she loves photography. “Are you an artist?” I ask. “No, but I do love art and music” she replies. We talk a bit aid she tells me there is so much so see in Jordan and that I should stay around to photograph it. It dawns on me that she is stunning. “May I make a photo with you?” I ask. “OK, but I just had my wisdom teeth out and my face feels puffy.” I can’t tell, and click two frames. “If you have an email, I’ll send this to you.” She writes her email in my book with a smiley face note “Come back!” That night, on instinct, I do a Google search on her name and find out that Nejla is a Princess of Jordan, a member of the Royal Family. I have since stayed in touch with this lovely, very down-to-earth young lady and we are discussing a photographic collaboration involving her family and the people of Jordan. I am enchanted of having met a princess, grateful for a new friend, and more convinced than ever of the power of “hello.”

Michael B. Jordan Responds To Trolls Saying A Black Man Can’t Play Johnny Storm

Michael B. Jordan is responding to Internet trolls saying a black man can’t play Johnny Storm in the upcoming “Fantastic Four” film.

After online commenters expressed their displeasure over the fact that the actor is playing a character who was blond and blue-eyed in the comic, the “Friday Night Lights” and “Fruitvale Station” star penned an essay in Entertainment Weekly addressing the topic:

Sometimes you have to be the person who stands up and says, “I’ll be the one to shoulder all this hate. I’ll take the brunt for the next couple of generations.” I put that responsibility on myself. People are always going to see each other in terms of race, but maybe in the future we won’t talk about it as much. Maybe, if I set an example, Hollywood will start considering more people of color in other prominent roles, and maybe we can reach the people who are stuck in the mindset that “it has to be true to the comic book.” Or maybe we have to reach past them.

To the trolls on the Internet, I want to say: Get your head out of the computer. Go outside and walk around. Look at the people walking next to you. Look at your friends’ friends and who they’re interacting with. And just understand this is the world we live in. It’s okay to like it.

After the essay was published, Jordan took to Twitter to thank fans expressing their support:

“Fantastic Four” hits theaters Aug. 7. Head over to Entertainment Weekly to read Jordan’s insightful piece in full.
