Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang On High Alert For Sunday July 15th

Coolangatta,  QLD/AUS (Wednesday, July 11, 2018) – The 2018 Rip Curl Cup is officially on “High Alert” to be held on Sunday, July 15th at Padang Padang,  Bali, Indonesia. With an impressive South West swell currently  tracking towards Bali, event directors have changed the official event status from  Red (Standby) to Yellow (High Alert), and surfers are  now on call for a potential Sunday, 7AM local Bali start time to run the one-day World Surf League specialty event.

Event Director and Rip Curl SEA Marketing Manager, James Hendy, has high hopes for the swell to bring a Green Light on Sunday. “As surfers in Indonesia, this is what we wait all year for,” he said. “Our goal is to see eight of the world’s best tube riders and eight of the  best local  Padang specialists testing their limits on the best day of the year at Padang. Anything less and we don’t run. This swell is looking very promising, and with some help from the Bali gods, hopefully the surfing world will be in for another amazing Rip Curl Cup on Sunday.”

Official event surf forecaster Surfline is calling for a powerful, long-period SW swell to build in this weekend and peak through the afternoon  on Sunday, July 15th. Coming from an ideal westerly angle (219°) to catch the reef at Padang Padang, this swell appears to be quite similar to  the Rip Curl Cup Trials swell that produced all-day fireworks at Padang on May 27th.

According to Surfline, “The storm has tracked further north than the average Indian Ocean storm, which means it’s closer to Bali. This should help with both size and consistency. Face size should be in the 8-10 foot range during the higher tide hours, with more size over the afternoon as the tide drops and the largest sets push up to 12’+ faces.”

Local winds at Padang on Sunday should be good to excellent with moderate to breezy SE/ESE trades expected.

Defending Rip Curl Cup Champion and Padang local Mega Semadhi is excited to be coming back for another year of competition, and is gearing up to battle it out for the win. “Padang is one of the best waves in Indonesia,” he said. “It’s the perfect spot to share with some of the best tube riders in the world. When you get that combination of wave quality and talent for one special day, everyone is always going to leave stoked no matter where they end up finishing. But of course, I’m going to do everything I can to win The Cup for the third time. Hopefully Dewa Baruna, the ocean god, is on our side and blesses us with good swell for Padang.”

The majority of the 16 invited surfers – eight of Indonesia’s best and eight of the world’s top tube riders – are currently standing by on Bali’s Bukit Peninsula, preparing to catch this swell. The remaining invitees are already on their way to Bali or preparing to board flights. Event directors will be ready to run early Sunday morning if the barrels at Padang reach the world-class caliber required to hold the Rip Curl Cup.

The 2018 Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang will be webcast live to the world at ripcurl.asia and worldsurfleague.com. Fans can also visit the site to check the latest Padang Padang swell forecast from official event forecaster Surfline, including real-time contest status and video updates from Bali.

4th of July Morning After Mess Beach Cleanup Series Hosted by Surfrider Foundation

WHEN: Thursday, July 5 from 9am-12pm

WHERE: Ocean Beach Pier, Crystal Pier at Pacific Beach, Fiesta Island, and Oceanside Pier

WHAT: Surfrider Foundation San Diego, in partnership with I Love a Clean San Diego & San Diego Coastkeeper, is hosting four separate beach cleanups on the morning of July 5, 2018 to tackle the gigantic mess left behind by the July 4th holiday. We invite the public to help us clean our beaches, and prevent plastic litter from entering our ocean. We aim to show citizens that by switching from single-use items to reusable ones, they can minimize the amount of litter that ends up on our streets, our waterways, our beaches, and ultimately our ocean.

VISUALS

  • Surfrider representatives and volunteers will be onsite at Ocean Beach Pier and Oceanside Pier

  • I Love A Clean San Diego representatives and volunteers will be onsite at Fiesta Island

  • SD Coastkeeper representatives and volunteers will be onsite at Crystal Pier at Pacific Beach

  • Each location will offer excellent photo-ops of 100’s of local citizens doing their part to keep our beaches clean

  • Final tallies and weights of trash collected, along w/ the most interesting items found, make for a great feature

  • Entercom radio staff will be participating at Ocean Beach pier, while Reef staff will be participating at the Oceanside Pier cleanup. Reef is the founding sponsor of Surfrider’s Better Beach Alliance, a collaboration to expand 3 key areas of impact, including # of beach cleanups, trash removal and volunteers.

WHY: At the 2017 Morning After Mess, 400+ volunteers removed over 1,643 lbs of trash from four beaches in only 3 hours. Without these events, a sizeable portion of that trash – most of which is plastic, a non-biodegradable material that is toxic to wildlife and often finds its way into our food chain – could have ended up in the ocean. While our cleanups make a tremendous impact, our true aim is to prevent trash from reaching the beach in the first place. Through successful programs like Rise Above Plastics, Hold Onto Your Butts & Ocean Friendly Restaurants, our organization uses outreach, education and advocacy to eliminate single-use plastics and cigarette butts BEFORE they reach the coast. The Surfrider Foundation’s mission is to protect and enjoy the world’s ocean, waves and beaches through a powerful activist network.

MORE: Visit http://surfridersd.org/ or contact Mitch Silverstein at 818.917.3347 or mitch@surfridersd.org.

4th of July Sales For Men – J. Crew Factory free shipping & double dipping, 20% off Goodfellow & Co., & More

IT’S NOT JUST A HANDFUL. IT’S A HOEDOWN.

hoedownin

Why hoedown? Too much for a handful. Enjoy the long weekend fellas… that is, if you’re lucky enough to get some time off.

J.C.F.: 50% off Most Everything + Extra 20% off & Free Ship w/ SUPERSTAR

J. Crew Factory

What was an extra 15% off to start the week has now jumped to an additional 20% off AND you get free shipping too. Suits & Sportcoats aren’t getting the cut, but it seems like the rest of J. Crew Factory’s basics are in fact getting this half off PLUS an additional 20% off that sale price. UPDATE: Sorry fellas, looks like the shorts aren’t getting the extra 20% off cut. But they are shipping for free.

Spier and Mackay: 15% off all regular priced suits/sportcoats/trousers w/ JULY4th

One of the best values in suits and sportcoats just got even better. Yes, sizes are scattered since it’s Spier, but it’s worth a look if you’re in the market for a new suit or sportcoat. Suits with the code now start at $ 279, and sportcoats now start at $ 169. Not bad for half canvas and bemberg linings. Runs clear through Sunday July 8th. Head here for a review of their slim fit, and here for a review of the contemporary fit.

Massdrop (or Amazon) Orient Mako II – $ 129.99

Orient Mako II

Massdrop has the Hacking and Hand Winding Orient Mako II diver for $ 129.99 right now… but so does Amazon. And with Amazon, it ships immediately (no waiting for the pre-order) AND it’s not final sale. Sold direct by Amazon at post time too. So… yeah. You’ll want to go with Amazon over Massdrop this time for sure.

GAP: 40% off Everything w/ GO4th + Extra 10% off & Free Ship w/ MOREFUN

GAP

Appears to be exclusion free? I believe? Just a reminder about the math. There are two codes here, but 40% off and then an additional 10% off does NOT equal 50% off. That extra 10% comes off the marked down price. So, if your purchase is $ 100, that’s 100 x .6 = $ 60, and then $ 60 x .9 = $ 54. Close to 50% off, but not quite.

J. Crew: 30% off Select Styles w/ ALLSTARExtra 20% off Select w/ THESKIMM

J. Crew

In case you missed it Sunday. There’s also a twenty dollar off $ 100 code JCSM18 floating about, but you can only use two codes at a time. They should stack though, depending on exclusions. More info over here.

Massdrop: Junghans Max Bill Auto. Watch – $ 729.99 FINAL

Junghans Max Bill Auto. Watch

That’s a lot of cash to drop on a wrist watch. But? Seems like some of you fellas are down with that (as far as threads and the social media channels indicate). Made in Germany. Automatic movement that hacks and hand winds. Timeless Bauhaus looks. 38 mm in diameter and 40mm from lug to lug. Convex hard plexiglass crystal with SICRALAN coating. Final sale though, being that it’s Massdrop.

Target: 20% off Clothes w/ JULY4

Target

Just a warning. Goodfellow & Co seems to fit a little wonky for some guys. There can be quite a gap between sizes. So, lucky you if it fits great off the rack. Code expires at the end of the day on Wednesday.

Todd Snyder: Further additions/reductions to Sale & Clearance

Todd Snyder

Just a warning… sizes are scattered at best. And in the clearance section there’s a few final sale items. So be careful with those. No returns for the final sale stuff.

Todd Snyder Part Deux: New Timex Marlin Blackout – $ 199

Timex Marlin Blackout

Not on sale and almost certainly gonna sell out. Still tiny. Still hand wound. Head here for a review of the silver version. Big thanks to Aaron K for the tip!

Brooks Bros: Up to 40% off Select Spring & Summer Styles

Brooks Brothers

Great for those of us who love Brooks Brothers… yet don’t usually operate on a Brooks Brothers budget. Personally, I’m a big fan of their Regent fit sportcoats. Especially when on double sale like this.

Huckberry: Astorflex Chelsea Boots in Sabbia (neutral) or Cuoio – $ 90 ($ 180)

Astorflex Chelsea

Still half off. Still made in Italy, still super comfortable, still shipping and returning for free. And still quite a few sizes left.

Allen Edmonds: 40% off Select Bourbon & Merlot

Allen Edmonds

Still going on. Still a hell of a deal. Huge fan of the Allen Edmonds Merlot shade around these parts (see a full How to Wear it for their Merlot McAllisters here). Also know that the Bourbon shade can be a bit divisive. Some people LOVE it. Some think it can look a little striped and/or greenish in some lights. Anyway, $ 249 is a hell of a price for timeless Allen Edmonds first quality shoes. Deal runs clear through July 22nd.

UNIQLO: Select 4th of July Deals & Free Shipping No Min!

UNIQLO

Feels like it’s a more extensive promotions section for the 4th of July weekend. And? Lots of their warm weather stuff is on sale. Like airism t-shirts and boxer briefs. They’re an inexpensive choice for many.

Cole Haan: Extra 40% off Sale Items w/ EXTRA40

Cole Haan

Lots of snobs like to rag on Cole Haan, but many guys have had some measure of success with the brand. Is full price too steep? Of course. But this stuff is already on sale AND its getting an extra 40% off. So, not bad. Careful though… lots of final sale here. No returns or exchanges on that stuff. So click wisely.

Nordstrom’s Anniversary Sale is Coming

Nordstrom

Another reminder before you get sloshed on cheap beer and go hog wild with your credit card this weekend. Nordstrom’s Anniversary sale is easily one of, if not the most anticipated sale of the year. Head here for what it looked like last year. If you’re a Nordstrom card-member, you get early access from July 12th – 19th. The sale goes live to the general public on the 20th. And yes, we’ll have our favorites from the sale ready to go for you to peruse.

House of Cards Has a Fourth of July Message From the New President Underwood

This Fourth of July, the new President Underwood wants you to give thanks to… her.

Robin Wright returns as newly minted Commander-in-Chief Claire Underwood in the new promo for House of Cards‘ final season.

“Happy Independence Day… to me!” she says in the video, released on July 4. This was followed by “#MyTurn,” noting it’s finally Claire’s turn to take the White House after five seasons of Frank Underwood fighting for the throne.

The sixth and last season of the Netflix drama began production earlier this year ahead of an expected premiere this year. Season 5 finished with Frank stepping down as President of the United States with Claire stepping up in his place.

Kevin Spacey was supposed to return for the final season, but the sexual assault allegations against him from multiple men, including actor Anthony Rapp, prompted his firing. (Spacey apologized to Rapp, but stated he didn’t remember the alleged encounter. He denied other allegations and announced in November that he was seeking “evaluation and treatment.”)

Now season 6 will focus on Claire. Wright will be joined by Greg Kinnear, Diane Lane, Michael Kelly, Jayne Atkinson, Patricia Clarkson, Constance Zimmer, Derek Cecil, Campbell Scott, Boris McGiver, and Cody Fern.

Holiday Open Thread (And Fourth of July Sales of Note!)

Something on your mind? Chat about it here.

Happy Fourth of July! We’re taking the day off, but as a mini holiday open thread I thought we’d recommend this gorgeous wrap dress from Cooper St. that clearly has a Fourth of July feel. I think it’s versatile enough to wear beyond the holiday, though, and I love the colors and the mixed stripes. You could even put a t-shirt on top and wear it to work as a skirt (depending on your office, that is). It comes in straight sizes 2–16 ($ 180) and plus sizes 14W–24W ($ 200), although the brand notes that “Sizes 2–6 run small; sizes 8–16 run large. (Hmm. Thanks for clearing that up.) (Note that Nordstrom has a TON of new markdowns that are pretty great in general — we’re doing a fuller roundup of 4th of July sales, after the jump…) Milan Stripe Wrap Dress

A few more affordable dresses in fun stripes are from Halogen, ECI, and Leith.

Joey Chestnut Just Set Another Nathan’s Fourth of July Hot Dog-Eating Contest Record

Joey “Jaws” Chestnut broke another record on Wednesday – chomping down 74 hot dogs (and buns) in 10 minutes – to win his 11th Nathan’s Fourth of July Hot Dog-Eating Contest on Coney Island in New York City.

Miki Sudo won the women’s contest, eating 37 hot dogs in 10 minutes. Michelle Lesco took second with 28 hot dogs, and Juliet Lee came in third, eating 25 hot dogs.

Announcers attributed the generally lower scores this Fourth of July to the high heat and humidity. At 91 degrees and sunny, the leading eaters were sweating profusely as they chowed down.

But the heat didn’t stop Chestnut. He bested last year’s record of 72 hot dogs. The victory was not without drama, however. After a brief judging dispute, it was revealed that Chestnut had eaten many more hot dogs than the running tally had indicated.

Eduardo Munoz Alvarez – Getty ImagesWinner Miki Sudo (C) competes in the women’s annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest on July 4, 2018 in the Coney Island neighborhood of the Brooklyn borough of New York City. Sudo has won the contest 5 years in a row.

In the men’s division, Carmen Cincotti came in second place, managing to eat 64 hot dogs, while Darron Breeden placed third with 43 hot dogs, unseating last year’s runner-up Matt “Megatoad” Stonie.

Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest, which takes place on Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York, has become must-see TV for many families on July 4. More than 20,000 people turn out to watch the competition and ESPN broadcasts the eating contest live to over 1 million viewers.

Interest in the competition has grown in recent years thanks in large part to the rivalry of star eaters like Chestnut.

Chestnut first won the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest in 2007, when he ate 66 hot dogs to set a new world record and defeat six-time defending champion Takeru “Tsunami” Kobayashi. He went on to win every year until 2015, when he was defeated by Stonie, who ate 62 hot dogs to Chestnut’s 60.

In 2016, Chestnut regained his title, eating 70 hot dogs. He won again in 2017, consuming 72 hot dogs and setting a new contest record.

Following his 2017 win, Chestnut declared, “I definitely have room for more… I’m looking forward to next year.”

In 2017, Sudo ate 41 hot dogs to win the women’s section, beating her nearest rivals Lesco, who ate 32 1/2 hot dogs and Sonya “The Black Widow” Thomas who ate 30.

Chestnut and Sudo each won a $ 10,000 first place prize. The remainder of the $ 40,000 prize purse was divided between the runners up in the men’s and women’s sections.

George Shea, who has hosted the contest since 1991, gave extra attention to the reigning champion this year. Known for his outlandish pre-contest comments, he introduced Chestnut as “the champion of now and of always.” As Chestnut pulled ahead in this year’s contest, the crowd took up chanting his name.

Tips for a fun — and safe — 4th of July with young children

by

Michelle Stein

posted in Parenting

What’s not to love about Independence Day: cookouts, fireworks, parades, family and friends. Fun and games aside, without the proper precautions, these new experiences and unfamiliar environments can pose safety risks to young children.

Here are a few tips to ensure your Fourth of July celebrations are fun — and safe — for the little ones.

Fireworks

The safest bet, according to the AAP, is for families to attend community fireworks displays run by professionals. For those planning on setting off fireworks at home, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offers the following safety guidelines:

• Don’t allow children to play with or ignite fireworks. (Even sparklers come with risks. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, sparklers can burn at more than 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit and account for 10 percent of fireworks-related injuries.)

• Always have an adult supervise fireworks.

• Avoid buying fireworks packaged in brown paper. This typically means they were made for professional displays and could be dangerous for consumers.

• Make sure everyone watches fireworks displays from a safe distance.

• Call 911 immediately if someone is injured from fireworks.

It’s important to keep in mind, too, that while many kids love fireworks displays, some babies and younger children may become scared or upset by the loud booms. (It’s not particularly great for their hearing, either, depending on how close you are to the fireworks.) So be prepared for the possibility of changing plans if the whole “first fireworks experience” ends up being a dud.

young child fireworks

Large crowds

Community fireworks displays and festivals tend to draw crowds, making it easy for a small child to slip away from caregivers. We all hope it never happens to us. But it doesn’t hurt to be prepared. Here are some measures to consider:

• Have your child memorize your phone number in case she gets lost. For younger children, consider writing your name and phone number on their hand and then coating it with a liquid bandage so the ink doesn’t smear.

• Take a photo of your child in the morning so you have an up-to-date image of him in case he gets separated. You’ll easily be able to give a description of his clothing and hair this way, too.

• Talk to your children about what they should do if they get lost. How do they identify workers/helpers? Where should you plan on meeting up?

• They may be controversial, but backpack harnesses for spirited toddlers can provide an added layer of safety in large crowds.

family grilling out

Grill safety

Unfortunately, instances of food poisoning peak during the summer months because of the warmer temperatures that allow food-borne illnesses to thrive. So it’s always a good idea to brush up on food and grilling safety if you’re planning on having guests over for a cookout. Here are some pointers from the CDC:

• Separate: While out shopping, grab meat, poultry and seafood last and be sure to separate them from other food in your cart to avoid cross-contamination.

• Keep it chilled: Make sure to keep meat refrigerated until it’s time for cooking. When transporting, keep the temperature below 40 degrees in an insulated cooler.

• Clean: Wash your hands before and after handing raw meat. Don’t forget to do the same with surfaces, utensils, and the grill.

• Cooking: Use a food thermometer to ensure you’re cooking meat hot enough to kill harmful germs. (See this chart for details.)

Last but not least, make sure children know that playing near the grill itself is strictly off-limits. Keep those little fingers safe!

The July fashion magazine covers brought us a number of beautiful model shots, including Lexi Boling, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Gisele Bündchen and Mayowa Nicholas. Of course, there was the inevitable Gigi Hadid cover and a few bland Hollywood starlet shots in the mix, but July proved an inspiring month for fashion glossies. That’s not to say there weren’t lots of covers to hate, like a model shot of Emily Ratajkowski, but mostly the good trumped the bad.

Read on to see a seriously inspiring green cat eye moment modeled by Boling and plenty of retro fashion and beauty looks in this month’s best (and worst) magazine covers.

Plenti Rewards Program Is Ending July 10 — Here’s How to Use Your Points

My mom used to say, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

Someone should have told Southeastern Grocers that when it ditched Winn-Dixie’s Shell fuelperks! program and adopted the Plenti program last year.

Plenti, a rewards program sponsored by American Express, allowed customers to use points toward purchases at participating retailers including Macy’s, Rite Aid, ExxonMobil, AT&T, Chili’s and Hulu.

Now some of those retailers are backing out, dealing less-than-plentiful options to the once-perky program.

Southeastern Grocers — the parent company of Winn-Dixie, BI-LO, Fresco y Más and Harveys Supermarkets — will discontinue the Plenti program nationwide on July 10.

What Will Happen to Your Plenti Points?

On April 16, the Plenti program stopped accepting new registrants.

Any Plenti cardholders enrolled prior to April 16 can continue to earn and redeem points on eligible purchases at Exxon and Mobil gas stations and BI-LO, Fresco y Más, Harveys and Winn-Dixie supermarkets until July 10.

However, you will not be able to redeem points at Macy’s or Chili’s after May 3.

Disclaimers at plenti.com warn that all unredeemed points will expire July 10, so you better get to it.

If you’re a current Plenti customer, you probably received an email notifying you of the new(ish) Shell fuel rewards program that will be rolled out post-Plenti.

The email said the equivalent value of any unredeemed Plenti points for fully registered Plenti rewards members will get transferred to the new rewards program automatically.

So depending on your status with Plenti, your points may expire July 10 or roll over into the new Southeastern Grocers rewards loyalty program when it launches this summer.

To check the status of your enrollment, visit bi-lo.com, frescoymas.com, harveyssupermarkets.com or winndixie.com and click on the red “Check Status” button.

Star Wars’ John Boyega reveals they’ll start shooting Episode IX in July after delay

JOHN Boyega has confirmed that Star Wars: Episode IX will begin filming this summer.

It comes after the film was delayed due to the tragic passing of Carrie Fisher, who portrayed General Leia Organa in the space fantasy.

While promoting Pacific Rim: Uprising on The One Show, John Boyega revealed when he’ll be returning as Stormtrooper-turned-hero Finn.

Star Wars: Episode IX will see J.J. Abrams return to the directing chair after launching the trilogy with 2015’s The Force Awakens.

Hosts Angelica Bell and Matt Allwright quizzed John on plot secrets, but he revealed: “I don’t know a thing, but I know I start filming in July. They’re prepping and planning.

“JJ has a script, but I just haven’t read it yet.”

John also opened up about the intense security around the top secret scripts.

He explained: “You have to go to a room where the script is… I can’t lie, sometimes you get to bring it back home.”

Initial scripts for the as-yet-untitled ninth instalment were reported to heavily focus on Carrie Fisher’s iconic role of Leia Organa but her tragic passing in 2016 forced a change in direction.

Last year, a Vanity Fair feature quoted producer Kathleen Kennedy as saying: “She was having a blast… The minute she finished, she grabbed me and said, ‘I’d better be at the forefront of IX!’

Because Harrison [Ford] was front and centre on VII, and Mark is front and centre on VIII. She thought IX would be her movie. And it would have been.”

Producers have ruled out using CGI technology or another actress to bring back Princess Leia in future instalments, after a CGI cameo in Rogue One received mixed reviews from loyal fans.

“We want to assure our fans that Lucasfilm has no plans to digitally recreate Carrie Fisher’s performance as Princess or General Leia Organa”, LucasFilm said in a statement.

Star Wars: Episode IX is scheduled for release in December, 2019.

LP Pathfinders: video of the month, July 2017

Screen Shot 2017-08-07 at 10.12.55

Every month, we curate the best blog posts and Instagrams from our Lonely Planet Pathfinders.

This month we’re featuring a video from a new Pathfinder on the block, videographer Mark Hadj Hamou, who brings us a captivating visual montage of Queenstown, New Zealand.

QUEENSTOWN 2017 – MARK HADJ HAMOU

‘An old friend decided to drop by New Zealand for a few weeks, and we just had to go on an adventure. Here’s what we got up to in Queenstown, a truly spectacular place to go exploring!’

A big thumbs up to Mark who has seamlessly pieced together a variety of shots to take us on his adventure. We particularly enjoyed the clever transition (at 00:00:14) which pulls us through the airplane window (literally) and into town, before being swept off our feet to enjoy stunning vistas of the mountainous landscape. Safe to say our hiking boots are at the ready! The colour treatment of these shots also gives the montage a nostalgic travel feel.

There were lots of great submissions this month. Hats off to The World Pursuit, who took us on an awe-inspiring journey to Tanzania with their latest video. Featuring epic drone footage of the free-roaming wildlife we couldn’t help but be reminded of classic scenes from Disney’s The Lion King. Mark Zwijgers also shared a beautifully shot video montage of his month-long trip to Thailand.

Thank you to all the Pathfinders who submitted videos this month – keep your eyes peeled on our Thorn Tree forum where we’ll post the next submission call-out. July jobs report closes the near decade-long jobs gap

Employers added 209,000 jobs in July, continuing a long trend of substantial job growth and pushing the unemployment rate down to 4.3 percent.

Economists had a hard time finding anything bad in July’s jobs report.

“Nothing much to complain about,” economist Aparna Mathur at the conservative American Enterprise Institute said, noting that job gains beat expectations.

“Everyone expects [job growth] to slow, but it hasn’t slowed much,” Dean Baker, co-director of the left-leaning Center for Economic and Policy Research, said.

And on Twitter, economist Justin Wolfers warned against listening to anyone disappointed by this jobs report:

Did we close the jobs gap?

Since 2010, the Hamilton Project at the Brookings Institution has calculated the jobs gap, defined as “the number of jobs that the U.S. economy needs to create in order to return to pre-recession employment levels while also absorbing the people who enter the potential labor force each month.”

With this jobs report, the economy has closed the jobs gap, said Ryan Nunn, the policy director at the Hamilton Project.

With this jobs report, the economy has closed the jobs gap.

If you’re skeptical, you’re not the only one. Baker questions whether the economy’s health is where it was in 2006 and 2007, pointing to how many workers between the ages of  25 and 54 are not in the workforce. “The employment rate for prime-age workers is still below the recession level,” he said.

And to be sure, the Hamilton Project also notes that the fact that the jobs gap closed “does not mean that the labor market scars of the Great Recession are entirely healed.”

“We think of the jobs gap as one important measure of labor market health, but it’s just one measure. There are other economic indicators that suggest there still may be slack,” Nunn added. He also pointed to a report released today that shows how uneven the recovery has been by state, gender, education and race.

Where was job growth?

Job growth was mostly in food services, professional and business services and health care, while construction and manufacturing saw little growth. It’s a trend that we’ve been seeing for years.

Growth in the service industry and food and beverages “suggests the demand is for a lot of the low-income workers who are now getting jobs,” Mathur said.

In an email to the PBS NewsHour, economist Jed Kolko of Indeed.com noted that the low-wage industry job growth is “helping the least-educated Americans get back to work. The recovery is now strong and long enough to lift many of the people hurt most by the recession — except in manufacturing, which continues to lag overall jobs growth.”

That’s one way to look at it. Another, says our economics correspondent Paul Solman, is that the “hourglass economy” trend of the past 30 years or so shows no signs of slowing, with jobs being added disproportionately at the top and bottom of the economy, not in the middle.

The “hourglass economy” trend of the past 30 years or so shows no signs of slowing, with jobs being added disproportionately at the top and bottom of the economy, not in the middle.

The “death of retail” narrative would appear to jibe with that analysis. General merchandise stores may have gained 4,600 jobs in the past month, but they’ve lost 36,000 in the past year. And “clothing and clothing accessories stores” seem to have dropped 10,000 jobs in July. We never put too much stock in one month’s numbers, but clothing retail jobs are down over the past year as well.

So are we finally witnessing the death of bricks-and-mortar retailing? Or is there more of a transformation in progress? Two upcoming Making Sen$ e stories will explore the issue, starting in a couple of weeks. And who works these often low-wage jobs? People already at a disadvantage in the workforce: Women make up 60 percent of department store jobs, while people of color make up 36 percent.

Economist Betsey Stevenson looked at the sectors with job growth through a gendered lens, commenting on Twitter, “The problem isn’t that we aren’t creating jobs, it’s that job growth is almost all in services … Men want manufacturing jobs.”

Making Sen$ e has reported on this disconnect, looking at the growth of jobs in education and health care and exploring why men aren’t pursuing jobs in those sectors. Stigma, Stevenson wrote in a Bloomberg op-ed, “Manly Men Need to Do More Girly Jobs,” on which she elaborated for us. But economist Teresa Ghilarducci said low pay is the main reason.

Was there wage growth in July?

Speaking of pay, average hourly earnings rose 9 cents in July. Over the year, wages have risen 2.5 percent, while inflation has been 2.38 percent over the last 12 months.

“We are see wage gains rising faster than inflation for all workers,” conservative Aparna Mathur said. “That tells me that demand for workers at the bottom of the income distribution is going up, and if you combine it with the good GDP numbers coming out, I think all of that suggests that employers are ready to hire again.”

Dean Baker, on the other hand, isn’t so optimistic about wage growth of .12 percent per year.

“I like to take the three-month average — so May, June and July — and that growth is just 2.2 percent, annualized rate,” Baker said. “That’s not accelerating.”

Ideally, he added, wage gains would be a full percentage point above the Federal Reserve’s inflation target, meaning wage gains around 3.2 percent.

But for wages to rise, we need to keep “the Fed from slamming on the brakes too soon,” Baker said. “No more [interest rate] hikes for the year.”

What does the Solman Scale U-7 say?

Our Solman Scale U-7, the broadest measure of underemployment and unemployment, which includes the officially unemployed, involuntary part-time workers and anyone who wants a job no matter how long it’s been since they last looked, also ticked down from 10.7 percent to 10.6 percent. To put this in perspective, when we first began calculating the U-7 in August of 2011, it was 18.3 percent.

“I think there are a lot of people out there who want to work who aren’t in the labor force at the moment.”

The decline in the U-7 can be explained in part by the decline in the number of people working part time for economic reasons, down by almost 1 million in the past year alone.

Aparna Mathur sees this as a very positive development: “There’s a decline in involuntary part-time workers, which suggests to me they are finding full-time jobs or finding jobs more satisfying on the wage front so they don’t classify themselves as involuntary part time workers.”

More workers are coming back into the workforce as well.

“There is a lot more optimism about being able to match with an employer,” Mathur said.

But Baker, pointing to the low labor force participation rate for both men and women, disagrees. “I think there are a lot of people out there who want to work who aren’t in the labor force at the moment.”

LP Pathfinders: top Instagrams from July 2017

Untitled design

In July’s collection of inspirational Instagrams from our Pathfinders, we’re venturing to four different continents for five very different travel experiences. From the steamy bustle of Kathmandu’s streets in monsoon season to the majestic vistas of alpine Italy, it’s time to pack up your camera and head for the hills.

Kathmandu, Nepal

‘We didn’t have high hopes for travelling through Nepal in July. July is the peak of the monsoon season, plagued by heavy rains and endless clouds. Though the days were often dreary and grey, the rains lent a magical quality to the evenings as warm streetlights and car headlamps reflected off the wet walkways and large puddles all around the narrow alleys of Kathmandu’. – Alex and Sebastian, @lostwithpurpose.

Why we like it: This candid snap is a real treat for the eyes. The damp floor bathed in the glow of streetlights immediately conveys that familiarly evocative, post-rain atmosphere, while the focal rickshaw driver is framed by electrical cables and phone wires above. The image’s rich, musty colours really pack a punch too.

Merida, Mexico

‘A large summer storm has just passed over the city to reveal a stunning sunset that sets the sky on fire!’ – Tommo and Megsy, @foodfuntravel.rocks.

Why we like it: With its dreamy sunset hue set against the hard surfaces and wire tangles of Merida’s backstreets, this shot is pure drama. Images like this only occur in those rare moments when the ordinary becomes the extraordinary, and beauty is found in the most unexpected of places – that’s what travel is all about, right?

Delhi, India

‘What is it about pigeons and monuments that makes for such a romantic picture? Jama Masjid at dusk…an inimitable symbol of Delhi’s heritage.’ – Punita Malhotra, @100cobbledroads.

Why we like it: The unique aesthetic of India’s capital city must have been photographed from almost every angle over the years, but this snap proves that there are always new perspectives to be found. From the ornate sweeps of Jama Masjid to the patchwork colours of Delhi’s streets below, this frame captures its blend of old and new effortlessly.

New South Wales, Australia

‘The second most photographed bridge in Australia is the Sea Cliff bridge, built to replace the cliff road which was at risk on constant rockslides.’ – Evie and Emmie, @mumpacktravel.

Why we like it: Highways are hardly the most obvious sources of inspiration, but this beautifully lit shot of New South Wales’ Sea Cliff Bridge shows that the open road can be well worth looking at in a new light. Particularly when it happens to be snaking around one of the planet’s most breathtaking coastlines.

Trento, Italy

‘While backpacking the Italian Alps with a tent, I spent a full morning climbing and hiking up to the peak of the ‘Piccola Cir’, and managed to capture this shot on the path that brought me upwards of 2500 metres. The view of the valley is breathtaking. I couldn’t believe I had made my way up there from those tiny cottages. Happy and satisfied in the end.’ – Tommaso Alexitch, @spaghettiontheloose.

Why we like it: Italy has countless varied landscapes to offer, but its mountainous regions are usually overlooked in favour of the jaw-dropping coastlines and ancient cities. This capture showcases the stunning mountainscapes that northern Italy boasts, and makes us want to grab a bike and set off on that delicious, winding road…

Savanna sunshine: when the wildlife becomes even more vivid – Javi Lorbada

Safari stories never cease to amaze us, but this photo post looks at the African savanna through a slightly different lens. Instead of the wildlife, Javi makes the savanna sunrises, sunsets and night skies the focus of his photography – and the results are beautiful.

Gulfport: Florida’s hippie haven – Karisa Klee

We love how Karissa’s post starts with a heartwarming story about the people behind the place. Don’t fear the Reeperbahn: St Pauli, Hamburg – Dave McClane

Dave takes us beyond the neon signs and rowdy bars of Hamburg’s notorious red-light district to show us another side of this area. Between music icons, food markets, street art and coffee houses there’s plenty to see, do and experience here. But what really makes the piece is Dave’s reflections on the day-to-day of life in this area, depicting St Pauli as a buzzing, cultural hub in Hamburg.

A heli-hiking adventure in British Columbia’s Bugaboos – Tamara Elliott

Helicopters, jagged peaks, mountain lakes, glaciers, breathtaking vistas… the list of Tamara’s incredible experiences is seemingly endless and had us green with envy. But to explore a phenomenal landscape such as British Columbia, it makes sense to have the epic adventure to match!
