Up all night in Norway: land of the midnight sun

The extreme northern coast of Norway is an unspoilt land of wonder, and the perfect place to enjoy the eternal dawn
Plus three more adventures in the midnight sun

Midnight. Morning. A shard of sun cuts through the cloud. Due north, not east, from my lighthouse. Gulls scream below us as they circle Flatøy fyr, our uninhabited island near Nordskot, northern Norway. We are on our own here for a few days, just me and the photographer Howard Sooley. We are 300km inside the Arctic Circle. Standing on top of the world.

I have been getting up around dawn for a year or more, absorbing the daybreak and recording it. I am writing a book, a manifesto for morning, about why it means so much to me, the change from night to light, making time to be (by) yourself. So I’ve come north for the summer solstice to see if there can be dawn without dark, if morning needs the night-time at all.

Don’t Get Scammed: 4 Questions to Help You Land a Legit Work-From-Home Job

Your pajamas. Your puppy child. Your couch.

Work-from-home jobs are desirable for all these reasons. And more.

We hear from a lot of you who share your circumstances — your hard times, your children’s needs, your need for a magical money-making side gig. That’s why we love showcasing awesome work-from-home jobs and encouraging you to find the one that best suits your life.

However, if you stumble upon a job that might seem too good to be true, pump the brakes for a second — it could be a scam.

We want to arm you with the best tips to avoid these work-from-home job scams, so we reached out to Katherine Hutt, the national spokesperson for the Better Business Bureau.

How Frequent Are Work-From-Home Job Scams?

The Better Business Bureau has a nifty BBB Scam Tracker, where thousands of people report scams concerning everything from credit cards to debt collections and employment.

Since its launch in late 2015, more than 5,000 employment scams have been reported in the U.S. and Canada.

These aren’t exclusively work-from-home job scams, but those kind of jobs are especially susceptible, Hutt says.

Why?

“It preys on people when they’re at a vulnerable point in their life,” Hutt said. She mentioned those who are fresh out of work, in debt, in need of a second job to pay bills or are caring for a family.

Plus, it’s easier for scammers to extract vital information when pretending to be employers. That’s because a legitimate employer needs your bank account’s routing number, your Social Security number — all of those private numbers.

“There’s other scams where that wouldn’t come up naturally,” Hutt said.

What Can Work-From-Home Job Scammers Do With Your Information?

Because these scammers can more naturally extract your most personal identifying information, the consequences can be terrifying. (Totally not trying to scare you here, but…)

Hutt says work-from-home job scams can fall into two major “buckets”: stealing your money and/or stealing your identity.

Regarding stealing your money, perhaps your “employer” sends you a check for any expenses. (Think mystery shopping: Go out and buy these things and I’ll pay you.) You go to deposit the check, and it’s a fake.

Or maybe the “employer” wants to make a direct deposit. Don’t share that information.

The second bucket includes identity theft. This might occur when you set up automatic, direct deposits for paychecks.

This can also occur when you think you’re filling out routine employment paperwork, which asks for your name, address, Social Security number — everything.

Falling into either scam bucket will leave you with a hijacked identity or a sad bank account.

4 Questions That’ll Help You Detect a Work-From-Home Job Scam

OK, so you obviously want to avoid these nightmarish scenarios. Hutt talked me through how you can avoid falling into these traps.

Ask yourself these questions:

1. Are you being asked to accept or send money right away?

Like Hutt said, don’t accept or send money — unless you’re positive it’s legitimate.

“Even for a uniform,” she said. Say a company needs you to send over $ 30 for said uniform. That’s not common protocol. Usually, companies just take those expenses out of your first paycheck.

Same goes for background checks, so-called starter kits and other expenses. And never, ever submit your information to the company itself for a background check.

2. Is the job listing generic or too good to be true?

If the listing uses generic language or is super short or vague, this requires some digging on your end.

Common scams can be found in those classic entry-level, work-from-home customer service gigs — no training required.

“If it’s too easy, it’s more likely to be a scam,” Hutt said. “Scammers will go a certain distance, but, at the end of the day, they just want you on the hook.”

That goes for those too-good-to-be-true opportunities, too. Sure, shopping to make money sounds great, but is it legitimate?

3. Did you check the job listing URL?

“Scammers will pretend to be legitimate companies,” Hutt said. “They might steal the brand.”

Don’t trust the job listing just because the little Target bullseye and logo are on the site, for example. Hutt says even the Better Business Bureau has had its brand stolen in the past — same logo, same colors.

Examine the website. Check the URL. It is target.com? If it’s target.jobs.com, that’s a red flag.

It’s best if you go to the actual company’s main website, and look for the link to its employment or careers page.”That way, you can be sure you are applying for a job that really exists rather than a work-from-home scam that mimics a real company,” Hutt said.

You can also stick any URL or email address into Google. Put quotation marks on either side, and search. Articles warning against scams might pop up.

“Google everything,” Hutt said. Also use that scam tracker I mentioned above to search the company’s name.

4. Consider Who You’ve Talked To

Even if you get ahold of the “employer” on the phone, don’t be so sure — especially if it’s only for a five-minute interview.

Hutt said face-to-face interactions are best. Of course, that’s not always the case with work-from-home jobs, so be wary.

Hutt said the more skeptical you are, the easier it will be to detect a scam.

Be Careful How You Find Work-From-Home Jobs

Sure, Craigslist is a great way to find jobs. In fact, several of our founding employees here at The Penny Hoarder found their jobs through a Craigslist ad.

However, because Craigslist doesn’t monitor postings, you must be extra careful. One key is to see if you spot the same listing in multiple cities, Hutt says. It doesn’t mean the job isn’t legitimate, but it means you need to put your detective hat on.

Try instead searching on these 14 legitimate job-search platforms. Typically, these sites screen and even hand-pick the featured listings.

Take, for example, ZipRecruiter. Its first barrier is that it costs employers a monthly fee to post a job listing, weeding out some scammers. It also has a flag tool available to job-seeking users. If a listing looks fishy, flag it. ZipRecruiter’s Trust and Safety Team will hop in a review it.

What to Do If You Find a Work-From-Home Job Scam

Report it.

Hutt said this is exactly why the Better Business Bureau developed its BBB Scam Tracker.

“People came with complaints, and there wasn’t really anything we could do for them,” she said. “So this provides an outlet for people who want to tell us about the scam.”

It tracks the scam type, the business name used and the date reported, as well as the victim’s postal code, the total dollars lost (but you can report a scam even if you haven’t lost money) and the scam description.

A recent reported scam occurred with “Tnt-Hr” and cost the victim $ 1,750.

Here’s the reporter’s description:

“These people pray on home makers they claim you will receive pay at the end of the month for receiving packages that they could receive themselves ultimately you will get in trouble and they get away with the goods. They send you a check that messes up your bank account”

So what if you’re like this victim?

Hutt said if you’ve lost money, start by filing a police report.

And if you’ve had your identity stolen — or suspect it — the Federal Trade Commission runs IdentityTheft.gov. Here, you report your theft and get a free recovery plan that’ll outline your next steps.

Your best bet, though? Stash this in your back pocket and look at each job listing with a critical eye.

5 Interesting Facts About Disney’s New Land “Pandora: The World of Avatar”

Pandoraavatar (Image: Twitter/JeevesOrlando)

Walt Disney World has been bringing fairytales to life and making fantasy feel real since its opening in 1971. The magic of Disney captivates both small children and grown adults by turning dreams and imagination into reality. Disney’s newest land, Pandora: The World of Avatar, doesn’t miss the mark. In fact, Disney seems to have outdone itself.

Pandora: The World of Avatar opened to the public on May 27 inside of Disney’s Animal Kingdom at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida. The land, which is based on James Cameron’s 2009 blockbuster film Avatar, seems to transport visitors into the movie.  (Click here to learn more about the attractions, cuisine, and landscape of Pandora.) Here are five interesting facts about Pandora: The World of Avatar.

1. It Took 6 Years And a Half a Billion Dollars to Build

Cameron says Disney first approached him with the idea to transform his record-breaking sci-fi flick into a reality back in 2011.

“Disney came to me and said that we want to take your movie and turn it into a land. Not a ride, a land—a place to go,” Cameron told CNN in a video interview during a press preview of the land. “And I thought ‘OK, that’s a bit of a challenge. You guys are biting off a big one this time.’ [But] you know what, they delivered on every promise and beyond.”

Although the project seemed ambitious, Cameron signed on. It took six years and $ 500 million to build the land, but the detail and precision in creating Pandora have paid off.

2. You Won’t See Any Avatar or Na’vi Walking Around the Land

Although you may run into Disney “cast members” in character as Alpha Centauri Expeditions’ field guides or humans who migrated to Pandora, you won’t see an avatar or Na’vi walking around. As Avatar fans can recall, Na’vi are the humanoid species indigenous to Pandora and avatars are Na’vi’s operated by humans. These fascinating blue creatures were the stars of the Oscar-winning film. One of the biggest disappointments about Pandora, however, is the missed opportunity for visitors to interact with Na’vi. The only time visitors can get a glimpse of a few is on the Pandoran River ride.

(Image: Twitter/WDWToday)

3. Don’t Expect to Meet Mickey Mouse on Pandora

Despite being in Walt Disney World, there are no traces of Mickey, Minnie, or any traditional Disney characters on Pandora—which is a good thing. This helps give the alien land an authentic feel. In addition, although Disney music plays in the background in the other Disney World theme parks, the only sounds you’ll hear on Pandora are noises from its wildlife.

4. You Can Create an Avatar in Your Own Image

On Pandora, you’ll have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to create a customized avatar doll in your own image inside of Pandora’s Windtraders gift shop. The miniature avatar doll cost $ 74.99.

5. Pandora Glows After Dark

Pandora (Image: The Pandoran River | Source: VisitPandora.com)

At night, Pandora literally glows in the dark. Everything from the tropical plant life to the signature floating mountains to the ground is illuminated with neon lights after dusk. This gives visitors a feeling that they are actually experiencing life on another planet.

Jordan Peele Is The First Black Writer-Director To Land $100M Debut

“Get Out” is one of 2017’s biggest blockbusters and its success has officially earned the film its rightful place in movie history.

As of Tuesday, “Get Out,” a psychological thriller about racism, has earned $ 110 million in box-office sales, making Jordan Peele the first black writer-director to break the coveted $ 100 million threshold with a feature debut.

Peele humbly acknowledged his accomplishment Tuesday:

There have been several black directors who have had their feature debut pass that mark, as noted by BlackFilm.com, however, none have earned that status with their own screenplay. “Get Out” is also the fastest film from production company Blumhouse to reach the $ 100 million mark, earning that status in just 16 days, according to Deadline.

Peele, a comedian widely known for his Comedy Central show “Key & Peele,” made his directorial debut with “Get Out.” The film was made on just a $ 4.5 million budget and has since become a real standout in Hollywood.

“Get Out” follows the experiences of a young black man who heads to a rural town to visit his white girlfriend’s family for the first time. The weekend away turns out to be a puzzling and suspense-filled trip where the young man realizes that the white people who live in and visit the home don’t have the best intentions.

The movie has earned much acclaim among moviegoers and critics alike, who have praised the film’s brilliant and mind-bending take on race. Some film reviewers have called it a “watershed feat,” while others credit Peele for directing a clever thriller that explores various aspects of being black in America. The film even earned a 100 percent score on the film review site Rotten Tomatoes in its first 40 reviews, and the good news doesn’t stop there.

Peele said he plans on releasing an entire series of “social thrillers” that fuse horror with daily human experiences. He plans to unveil four more films that follow this theme within the next decade.

“There’s several other ideas that have been germinating for the past eight years, and I’d like to do all of them,” Peele told The Verge in a recent interview. “As far as I’m concerned, my next decade or so — along with helping other untapped artists, or untapped identities, find their own platforms as a producer — I want to write and direct these four other social thrillers.”

Under Awards-Season Fire, The ‘Moonlight’ And ‘La La Land’ Teams Displayed Grace

In the wilds of this year’s Oscar race, “La La Land” and “Moonlight” were pitched as bitter rivals. In actuality, they were more like competitive pals. Frenemies, if you will.

As “La La Land” producer Jordan Horowitz said Sunday upon realizing his film had not actually won Best Picture, “I’m going to be really thrilled to hand this to my friends from ‘Moonlight.’” Horowitz waved director Barry Jenkins and company to the podium without a hint of resentment, despite having just been informed that presenters Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty announced the wrong winner.

The exchange was a gracious encapsulation of a monthslong Best Picture contest that assumed complex layers amid Donald Trump’s election. The media’s analyses painted “Moonlight” as the socially conscious contender whose victory would double as Trump resistance, rendering “La La Land” a fantasy frolic doused in Hollywood nostalgia. But as these things go, our armchair narratives outpaced what was happening among the people actually involved with the movies. Having seen one another at event after event since September’s big festivals and the subsequent awards blitz, it turns out the competitors might actually like each other.

Representing a small independent film about a black, gay latchkey kid in the Miami projects, Jenkins has remained neighborly throughout the long haul. In fact, he first demonstrated affection for “La La Land” director Damien Chazelle when their movies premiered at the Telluride Film Festival in September.

And again when the musical enjoyed stellar returns during its first weekend in theaters.

After a Twitter user lamented that “La La Land” would likely topple “Moonlight” for awards, Jenkins politely protested.

When I talked to Jenkins about his Golden Globe nominations a few days after “La La Land” opened, he called the movie one of his favorites of 2016. “’La La Land’ is an amazing film,” he later told Esquire, defending it against criticisms. “I think there’s a very superficial read of ‘La La Land’ that does injustice to what Damien’s doing in the film, and it’s convenient because these are tough times to make a superficial read of that film. But it’s like, no, this is America. This is what this shit is. You gain something; you sacrifice something else in the gaining of that thing. I mean, that’s dark stuff.”

The “sacrifice” to which Jenkins alludes is Mia (Emma Stone) and Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) ending their relationship to pursue professional fulfillment, which some interpret as a cynical take on romance. Jenkins’ implicit candor about the nature of awards season ― in which movies with little in common are pitted against each other for the sake of trophies ― marks a respite from the mudslinging and strategizing that dominate Oscar derbies.

The “La La Land” crew exhibited similar grace. While accepting the Golden Globes’ screenwriting prize in January, Chazelle said of his fellow nominees, “One of the actual benefits of this whole rodeo of awards season is getting to meet people whose work you really admire, so all of you, I’m in awe of your work and I’m humbled to be up here.” The telecast cut to Jenkins nodding along as Chazelle spoke. Ryan Gosling, seemingly amused by Sunday’s mishap, threw his arms around actor Ashton Sanders as the “Moonlight” crew congregated onstage. Nearby, Best Supporting Actor winner Mahershala Ali embraced “La La Land” producer Fred Berger. In the press room backstage, Emma Stone said, “I think we all would have loved to win Best Picture, but we are so excited for ‘Moonlight.’ I think it’s one of the best films of all time, so I was pretty beside myself.”

At the Governors Ball after the ceremony, members of the “Moonlight” and “La La Land” clans reportedly hugged one another. “It was a surreal, kind of out-of-body experience,” Horowitz told The New York Times. “We’ve been on the circuit with them for six months. If that kind of thing has to happen, I’m glad to give it to them.”

Of course, we can’t know what any of these people really think of the “Moonlight”-”La La” two-hander. But assuming their reactions aren’t just calculated attempts at sportsmanship, the camps’ positive repartee is the exclamation point to a heated Best Picture race defined by Hollywood’s damning statistics about inclusivity and on-screen representation. Some of the Monday-morning quarterbacking has called Horowitz “brave” for announcing Beatty and Dunaway’s mistake, which undercuts “Moonlight” as the rightful winner. Stating a fact on live television is not brave, but Horowitz was gracious and warm in welcoming the other team to take his place, and that counts for a lot. He held up the card inside the proper envelope so the world could see “Moonlight” printed on it. Despite whatever disappointment the “La La Land” personnel felt, it was a rare moment of unity in a cutthroat industry.

And the affection goes beyond praising one another’s films. About half an hour after the Oscars ended, “La La Land” co-star and producer John Legend praised the “team” from “Moonlight.” On Monday morning, Horowitz tweeted about the “beautiful people” involved with the movie, which he had called “excellent” back in September.

We can now close the books on the 89th Oscar relay having crowned a progressive indie underdog that probably wouldn’t have been made 15 years ago. It is, in a sense, a demonstration against the Trump administration, which has exemplified disregard for the sorts of marginalized voices depicted in “Moonlight.” And for those of us who have watched this pony race from the sidelines, it is a vote for what we love most: celebrating the city of stars that provides both escapism and life-affirming mirrors of our planet’s diverse realities. On to the next one!

These ‘La La Land’ Songwriters Are Also Behind Your Latest Broadway Obsession

Before a shower of Academy Awards rain down upon all those associated with  “La La Land” on Sunday, let’s take a moment to remember that two of the film’s nominees are also responsible for the biggest musical theater hit of the year.

Years before Mia and Sebastian danced among the stars, composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul were already being hailed as the heirs to Rodgers and Hammerstein. With the debut of their celebrated new musical “Dear Evan Hansen,” currently playing at the Music Box Theatre in New York City, Pasek and Paul are poised to become the premier songwriting team working today.

The two first met during their freshman year at the University of Michigan where they were both studying musical theater. Bonding over the shared embarrassment of being the two worst dancers in a ballet class, Pasek and Paul soon turned their attention to writing songs. After a transformative apprenticeship with “Avenue Q” co-creator Robert Lopez, the duo began developing an impressive resume filled with musical adaptations of movies like “Dogfight” and “A Christmas Story.”

But it was “Dear Evan Hansen” that catapulted Pasek and Paul into the upper echelon of the musical theater community. Starring Ben Platt of “Pitch Perfect” as the anxious teenage depressive boy next door, “Dear Evan Hansen” has all the trappings of a hit modern musical. After a classmate he barely knew commits suicide, high schooler Evan (Platt) inserts himself into the lives of the deceased’s family, as he struggles with his own demons and self-confidence. The irresistibly catchy ballads pair well with the story of a teenager grappling with his place in the world, as big themes of love and loss are boiled down to a fiercely relatable level.

As the “Dear Evan Hansen” team was preparing for the show’s Broadway debut, the two already had their eye on another project: Damien Chazelle’s “La La Land.” In a pitch to the director, Pasek and Paul wrote the proposed lyrics for the song “City of Stars,” which garnered the duo a Golden Globe award earlier this year and is nominated for an Academy Award. Chazelle was immediately impressed, describing the duo as a “goldmine,” and the rest is award show history.

Although “La La Land” and “Dear Evan Hansen” have little in common thematically ― one is consumed by nostalgia, while the other is decidedly forward-thinking ― in Pasek and Paul’s eyes, the two productions do share a connection.

Speaking with The New York Times in November, Pasek said, “I think we’re attracted to material that’s hopeful and messy, and in that mess, there’s an attempt at getting at truth.”

Get to know Pasek and Paul a little better in the interview below.

The soulful R&B singer provides the backup track for Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone’s whirlwind love affair in the new clip released on Wednesday for the modern day musical.

Legend, in his first major film role, plays Keith, an established musician who convinces Gosling’s character, an old friend and keyboardist, to join a new band poised for commercial success called The Messengers.

The song featured in the clip, “Start a Fire,” was cowritten by Legend and becomes the band’s first big hit, making Gosling’s character a star and forcing him away from his budding romance with an aspiring actress, played by Stone.

While the film is Legend’s first major acting role, he’s no stranger to composing music for film. He won an Oscar and a Golden Globe in 2015 for cowriting “Glory” from the film of the same name.

La La Land, nominated for 7 Golden Globes, hits theaters everywhere Friday.

The Land Across

The Land Across

?Wolfe is our Melville.? ? Ursula K. Le Guin Grafton, an American writer of travel guides, needs a new place to explore, and he chooses a small and obscure Eastern European country. No travel books exist about the land beyond the mountains, so he sees it as his golden opportunity. But the moment Grafton crosses the border he is in trouble, much more than he could have anticipated or imagined. His passport is confiscated, and then he is detained for not having it. He is released into the custody of a local family, seduced by the wife, and again detained. In prison he is recruited by the enigmatic and powerful Legion of the Light as a broadcaster of propaganda. It becomes evident to him that there are supernatural agencies at work here, but they are not in some ways as threatening as the brute forces of bureaucracy and corruption that Grafton encounters in this strange land. Is our hero in fact a spy for the mysterious JAKA? Or is he an innocent citizen caught in a Kafkaesque trap? Gene Wolfe keeps us guessing until the very end, and after.
