Want to buy a house? How long you’ll have to save depends on where you live

For the average renter buying the median-priced home in America, it will take about 6½ years to save for a 20 percent mortgage down payment. But it could take more than two or three decades in some places.

‘Bill Maher: Live from Oklahoma’: Trump’s ‘Microdick’ Is the Root of All His Problems

HBO

On Saturday night, HBO aired Bill Maher: Live from Oklahoma, the political satirist’s 11th stand-up special for the cable network. Its original title was Triggered, though apparently Maher thought better of naming his comedy routine after an internet-troll word.

Throughout the hour-long special, filmed at the 2,800-capacity Brady Theater in Tulsa, the 62-year-old comic delivered—by his own admission—many of his “greatest hits,” going after “safe spaces” and “trigger warnings” and Islam and fussing over Caitlyn Jenner’s genitals (she had gender-reassignment surgery last year, Bill, you don’t need to keep harping on it).

He assigned nicknames to top Trump administration officials, including former EPA chief Scott Pruitt (“three raccoons under a trench coat”), Attorney General Jeff Sessions (“a Confederate soldier”) and Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos (“mentally challenged”). Vice President Mike Pence, meanwhile, was “beyond Christian”—with Maher mimicking the politician in saying, “Life begins at erection”—though not as bad as Trump because he’s “not trying to become a dictator” and “is within the normal parameters of Republican awful.”

2018 World Cup: Russia vs. Croatia, How to Watch, Live Stream

MARTIN BERNETTI/AFP/Getty Images

Russia and Croatia will face off in the World Cup quarterfinals on Saturday, July 7 at 2 p.m. ET.

As the World Cup reaches its apex, and the France vs. Uruguay and Brazil vs. Belgium games close out Friday, only a few countries remain in the running. After a month-long celebration of athleticism, patriotism, and all sorts of boundary-breaking, it’s down to the wire.

Russia, the host country for the 2018 World Cup, is riding a wave of success hardly anyone saw coming. After a penalty-shootout victory over much higher-ranked Spain, a victory against Croatia will give them a spot in the semi-finals.

Meet The Central Americans That Washington DC Can’t Live Without

STR

INTIPUCA, El Salvador — In a little town in eastern El Salvador a statue has been built in honor of the first resident to make it to Washington D.C., way back in 1968. Since then, thousands have followed, both legally and illegally, forging a bond so close and so extensive that many of the folks here think what the North Americans call “the nation’s capital” could hardly function without workers from this sleepy, coastal town in El Salvador.

The streets are lined with houses in pristine condition, painted bright colors and built with remittances sent by workers in the United States, and long before El Salvador ditched its colón for the U.S. dollar in 2001, that was the common currency here.

While walking around town, residents commonly greet each other saying, “Hey, how’s it going?” rather than, “Hola, que tal?’ Many of the migrants who have returned, either by choice or deportation, are eager to speak the language that became familiar to their tongues during their years or even decades in D.C. and the surrounding Maryland and Virginia suburbs.

This female World Cup reporter was assaulted live on air

No one should be exposed to this

world cup

This week, we learned that certain World Cup results mean an increase in incidents of domestic violence in the UK, and now, a female journalist reporting from the World Cup in Russia has been assaulted by a fan during a live broadcast. Judith Gonzalez Theran, a Colombian correspondent, was delivering a piece to camera when a fan forcibly kissed and groped her.

The incident, which occurred last week, came to light when Gonzalez Theran’s employer, DW, drew attention to the attack by posting a clip on social media. The network emphasised, ‘Sexual harassment is not okay. It needs to stop. In football, and elsewhere.’

After the interruption, Gonzalez Theran continued her report, but has addressed the incident online since then, saying, ‘We do not deserve this treatment… we are equally valuable and professional.’

The incident somehow manages to take an even darker turn when Gonzalez Theran appeared to suggest that this assault was premeditated, as her and her crew had been setting up in the location for two hours previously. She revealed, ‘When we went live, this fan took advantage of the situation… but afterwards, when I checked to see if he was still there, he was gone.’ She added, ‘There are always fans that compliment you and behave respectfully. This one went too far.’

Unfortunately, sexual harassment of female sports reporters is nothing new, and clearly not limited to just football.

Earlier this year, a group of 52 Brazilian sports correspondents banded together and launched a campaign with the slogan #DeixaElaTrabalhar (Let Her Work) to combat harassment from both fans and players when they are working.

On top of this, last year, 21-year-old tennis player Maxime Hamou was banned by the organisers of the French Open for ‘reprehensible behaviour’ after repeatedly trying to kiss a female reporter during an interview, in spite of her clear discomfort.

Time is up.

The most inspirational takeaways from Marie Claire Future Shapers Live

Prepare to be inspired…

Future Shapers Live 2018

This weekend we hosted our annual Marie Claire Future Shapers Live event, in partnership with Neutrogena, taking place this year at Sofitel St James, London.

The Saturday saw 300 career-focused women, of all ages and industries, gathering in the London hotel for inspiration, advice and skills to advance their careers, change direction or set out on their own.

This year’s theme was ‘playing to your strengths’,  with a powerhouse line-up of CEOS, entrepreneurs, influencers and career coaches giving killer advice in a series of game-changing talks and workshops, closing with a keynote discussion between MC Editor-in-Chief Trish Halpin and singer and TV personality Alesha Dixon.

From talks on starting a business from scratch and Facebook Lives on creating a social media following, to a workshop in coping with stress and a lecture on determining what’s not your job, every session served up practical advice and some very inspirational quotes.

Here are some of the best takeaways from the event…

Be fearless:

‘If we eliminated fear, we would fly. The universe only wants good things for us – you just have to be fearless.’ Alesha Dixon

‘Someone once described me as courageous and it was the biggest compliment I’ve ever been given. You don’t have to be born with courage. If you want it, you can have it.’ Victoria Pendleton

‘The biggest prison we live in is the fear of what other people think – if we change that mindset, we can be whatever we want to be.’ Aimee Bateman

‘Women are socialised to be perfect. We should be socialised to be brave.’ Stephanie Phair

Be open to mistakes:

‘We need to redefine the word “mistake” – mistakes are important and necessary, and that’s true in all walks of life – it’s just that you’ll only find that out in hindsight.’ Pavan Ahluwalia

‘I nearly went bankrupt. I remember crying one night because I couldn’t afford to pay £16k in wages to my staff the next day. I had to go and tell them that I couldn’t pay them, and it was humiliating. But it was a huge learning curve and it changed my entire business, because I had to make sure it would never happen again.’ Rachel Flanagan

Be authentic:

‘You can’t just copy someone else as you’ll only ever go as far as that person. You have to be you to reach your own potential.’ Sebina Hussain

‘I’ve been told my whole life I need to act more like a boy, which is a bit boring, isn’t it? I’m going to be that feminine person, I’m going to do it my way and it’s going to work.’ Victoria Pendleton

‘Be emotional. Be exactly who you are, and if people don’t like it, they’re not your tribe. What three words do you want people to use to describe you? That’s your brand.’ Aimee Bateman

Be open to help:

‘Don’t be a busy fool. I know what I’m worth in my business and every time I put something in my diary, I think “Is that a job a director should be doing?”‘ Rachel Flanagan

‘Be inquisitive. If you’re stuck on a hurdle, ask and people will show you the way. And don’t spend your time doing something someone else can do. You need to be the person who’s improving the top line and bottom line therefore – stick to what you’re good at.’ Anna Gibson

‘Don’t dim your light, shine. It’s ok to be different, we can work together to make collective change. Even superheroes can’t do it on their own.’ Aimee Bateman

Future Shapers Live 2018

Credit: Joe Burford

Be persistent:

‘When you’re a young girl and you have dreams of your future, the path seems clear, but then reality kicks in. I wanted to be a doctor, and I was told that people like me couldn’t do it. I didn’t listen. When one door closes, you find a window with a tiny crack open and you find every bit of strength inside you to shatter that crack and jump through.’ Dr Rosena Allin-Khan MP

‘Let’s not think change happens to us. Let’s take the reigns and be the change makers. That will ensure we are not negatively affected by change – we will be driving the change.’ Brita Fernandez Schmidt

‘You have to communicate why you do what you do. There’s always going to be someone who dresses better than you or uses longer words, but the way you can win is giving people something to connect to.’ Aimee Bateman

Future Shapers Live 2018

Be generous:

‘It’s not about pulling the ladder up behind you, it’s about trying to let down lots of ladders to give other women a leg up too.’ Dr Rosena Allin-Khan MP

‘It is such a privilege to be able to help others – we must use that privilege.’ Brita Fernandez Schmidt

‘People will fall in love with you if you give them something to fall in love with.’ Aimee Bateman

Live from Apple WWDC 2018

Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) is where the tech giant shows us what’s new with its myriad software platforms. The most important ones are iOS and macOS, but also on deck are updates for watchOS, tvOS, and broader services like Siri and iTunes. Whereas the fall Apple event is known for new iPhones, WWDC tells us how the entire Apple ecosystem is evolving, so it’s arguably even more important.

This year we’ll see what Apple has in store for iOS 12, macOS 10.14, watchOS 5, and more. Apple’s also expected to give updates to Siri as well as its overall strategy for AI and machine learning. Despite some early rumors about a new iPhone SE and revamped MacBook Pros, new hardware isn’t expected. But Apple sometimes surprises. Read more…

‘Hereditary’: Does the ‘Scariest’ Movie of the Year Live Up to the Hype?

A24

The sins of the past are destined to repeat themselves in Hereditary, which is apt considering that the film is the latest heavily hyped Sundance horror hit to fall short of its deafening advanced buzz.

In the grand tradition of Jennifer Kent’s The Babadook and Robert Eggers’ The Witch, writer/director Ari Aster’s debut (in theaters June 8) is a work of malevolent formal precision and mounting-hysterics performances, all of which combine to create an expert atmosphere of dawning dread and, later, supernatural madness. Moreover, as with those prior acclaimed releases, it’s an exercise in style and mood devoid of anything that might significantly raise one’s heart rate, much less serve as legitimate nightmare fuel. Prepare to wait… and wait… and wait some more to be terrified.

To be sure, when it comes to scary movies, everyone’s mileage varies. And as a lifelong horror junkie, I readily confess that my own calloused constitution for the grisly and the macabre is greater than most, sometimes to a fault. Still, no matter that nor the rapturous praise that’s preceded its premiere, Aster’s maiden feature employs meticulous design and lots of screaming to drum up only so-so suspense, convinced that creeping pans through constricting architecture and random suggestions of paranormal activity will put one on edge—or, at least, keep one engaged until the final five minutes, when all hell breaks loose. By the time that mayhem arrives, however, you’ll be forgiven for having lost interest in this patchwork-quilt concoction of ghoulish clichés and Toni Collette freak-outs.

Ant McPartlin’s emotional last TV appearance revealed on Britain’s Got Talent as he congratulates contestants through to live semi-finals

ANT McPartlin’s emotional last TV appearance on Britain’s Got Talent will be aired tonight as he congratulates the contestants going through to live semi-finals.

The pre-recorded episode is the last time the 42-year-old will be on screen after cancelling all his telly work and checking into rehab  following a drink-drive charge.

Ant McPartlin will appear alongside Declan Donnelly for the final time on Britain’s Got Talent tonight
ITV

It leaves co-host Declan Donnelly to present the live shows solo when they begin next week.

The Geordie duo aren’t expected to appear together on-screen until much later in the year when they reunite for I’m A Celebrity.

In a now poignant moment, Ant’s last time on camera sees him congratulating a successful contestant before bidding them farewell and saying they’ll see each other again.

His final on-screen words are to the hopeful, as he says: “Howay the lads. Well done. Go and celebrate – we’ll see you next time kidda. Toot toot.”

In happier scenes on the show, Ant gets on stage to perform a dance with one hopeful
ITV
DJ Murray Mint managed to get both the Geordie presenters and the judges on stage

But it’s not all filled with sadness for Ant as he also gets a chance to get up on stage and dance with Dec and judges Simon Cowell, David WalliamsAmanda Holden and Alesha Dixon.

They run onto the stage waving Union Jack flags and wearing funky digital display sunglasses as hopeful DJ Murray Mint gets everyone moving.

But is it enough to get through to the semi-finals?

Meanwhile Dec’s preparing to go it alone from Monday night – making it the second time this year he’s had to present solo.

Each night, eight acts will perform in the semi-finals, with two acts making it through to next weekend’s final.

He’s told TV Mag previously that not watching himself back on TV and not engaging with social-media critics is usually how he copes.

“You can’t do anything about live stuff once it’s done,” says Dec, 42.

“At times the criticism stings, but not often. Usually it’s a case of: ‘Look at you with your 11 [Twitter] followers. You’re brave.’”

BEST DEAL UPDATE (UK):

Activists Are Already Targeting Google and Facebook Over Europe’s New Data Privacy Law That Went Live Today

Europe’s sweeping new data privacy regime came into effect this morning, and privacy activists are not wasting time in flexing their muscles. One organization has already made official data protection complaints about Google, Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram, while another is going after the shadowy data brokers that trade people’s information behind the scenes.

The complaints about Google, Facebook and Facebook’s subsidiaries come from a group called None Of Your Business (NOYB)–a non-profit founded by the very successful serial Facebook litigant Max Schrems. Schrems, the Austrian lawyer who annihilated the U.S.-EU Safe Harbor data-sharing agreement a few years ago, formed the crowdfunded NOYB in order to take on big tech firms that break the EU’s new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR.)

The new law only lets companies process people’s data if they have a valid legal basis for doing so. Several justifications are acceptable, and consent is one of the most frequently-chosen options. However, users have to be able to freely give their consent–the law says people can’t be forced into consenting to their data being processed, in order to use a service.

According to Schrems and his NOYB group, Google and Facebook are railroading users in this way.

“Facebook has even blocked accounts of users who have not given consent. In the end users only had the choice to delete the account or hit the ‘agree’ button-that’s not a free choice; it more reminds of a North Korean election process,” said Schrems in a statement. “Many users do not know yet that this annoying way of pushing people to consent is actually forbidden under GDPR in most cases.”

So NOYB has lodged complaints with a variety of European privacy regulators, “to enable European coordination.” One complaint, covering the consent requirements of Google’s Android, has been filed in France. The main Facebook complaint has been filed in Austria, while those for Instagram and WhatsApp are in the inboxes of the Belgian and Hamburg regulators respectively.

In case you’re wondering how a company is supposed to deliver a service without users giving their consent to their personal data being processed, here’s the deal: If the data really has to be processed in order to deliver the company’s services, then that’s a valid legal justification in itself. For example, an email service doesn’t need to get consent in order to send and deliver people’s emails. Consent is only needed when the company is trying to do other things with that data, such as using it to make money from advertisers.

Schrems and his non-profit argue that, if their complaints are successful, the victory should put an end to all those annoying consent popups that many companies think the GDPR demands.

“If companies realize that annoying pop-ups usually don’t lead to valid consent, we should also be free from this digital plague soon,” he said. “GDPR is very pragmatic on this point: Whatever is really necessary for an app is legal without consent, the rest needs a free ‘yes’ or ‘no’ option.”

Google and Facebook had not responded to requests for comment at the time of writing.

Meanwhile, a separate group in the U.K.–Privacy International–has launched an investigation into the companies that do behind-the-scenes trading of personal data.

The organization has sent letters to firms like Acxiom, Criteo and Quantcast, asking them how they handle personal data. The GDPR is pretty firm on this stuff–people are supposed to know when a company has their data, and companies are not supposed to be using that data to build profiles of people if that’s not the case.

“We welcome GDPR taking effect,” said Privacy International legal officer Ailidh Callander. “It’s been a long time coming, and GDPR is an important step in the right direction, providing essential safeguards to our human rights to privacy and data protection, by imposing more stringent obligations on companies, strengthening rights of individuals, and increasing enforcement powers. GDPR is a key tool to empower individuals, civil society, and journalists to fight against data exploitation.”

The GDPR threatens companies with massive fines for breaking its many terms–up to EUR20 million ($ 23.4 million) or 4% of global revenues, whichever is bigger. While these are big, scary figures, though, it is deeply unlikely that fines will be that high in any but the most egregious cases.

Jimmy Kimmel Found a Bunch of Adults on the Street Who Still Live With Mom and Dad

A 30-year old New York man recently made headlines when his parents were forced to sue him to get him to finally move out of their house. While the man in question prepares to appeal the judge’s decision to evict him from his parents’ home, Jimmy Kimmel decided to head to the streets to find out how common it is for full-grown adults to still live with their parents.

He revealed the results of his informal poll of passersby on Wednesday night’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! turning it into a game where the audience would be briefly introduced to a person and then try to guess whether or not they still live at home. Turns out a lot of adults still live with their parents, in fact, his own audience harbored a mother and son who were still co-habitating.

Luckily, Kimmel has a solution to this problem plaguing the nation. He launched a new service that allows people to adopt men over 30. While they have no discernible skills, on the plus side there’s no potty training required and they come with their own Xbox and sword collection.
