For the average renter buying the median-priced home in America, it will take about 6½ years to save for a 20 percent mortgage down payment. But it could take more than two or three decades in some places.

Princess Cruises offers toothy fun with Shark Week-themed celebrations all summer long

In “Jaws,” when Roy Scheider’s character Chief Brody uttered the famous line, “You’re going to need a bigger boat,” he probably didn’t have a cruise ship in mind.

That didn’t stop Princess Cruises from going all in on Shark Week though, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary.

Justify Could Win the Triple Crown at the Belmont Stakes, But It’s a Long Shot. Here’s Why

The stakes are perhaps the highest for one chestnut colt at the Belmont Stakes this year.

As many thoroughbreds before him, Justify will attempt to join an elite — and extraordinarily small — class of horses to win the Triple Crown at the 2018 Belmont Stakes on Saturday. The thoroughbred will face his toughest challenge yet at the mile-and-a-half race, where he will attempt to make good on his 2018 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes wins.

Justify could be the second Triple Crown winner for trainer Bob Baffert, who trained American Pharoah back in 2015 when he ended a 37-year Triple Crown drought. But winning the Belmont Stakes isn’t so simple — and the New Jersey track presents the most challenging race of the three, said Nick Zito, an experienced trainer with Derby, Preakness and Belmont wins under his belt.

“It’s called the Triple Crown for a reason,” Zito said. “It’s one of the most difficult things to do in sports.” After all, only 12 horses have won it in close to 150 years of these races. And if Justify fails to clinch the win this weekend, he’ll become the 24th thoroughbred to win the Derby and the Preakness — but not the Triple Crown.

Indeed, the longest race of the three American Classics bookends the series and reflects just how hard it is to win the the coveted title. These thoroughbreds complete the series — or compete in one or two races — over the span of just more than a month, with races in varying distances in different states. Justify’s first win of the series came at the one-and-a-quarter-mile Kentucky Derby track on May 5, and his second victory came two weeks later in Baltimore at the one-and-three-sixteenths-mile Preakness Stakes track.

However, Zito warned, “Belmont is the most grueling of the Triple Crown races. It’s the toughest for sure.” Zito knows that first hand. Despite two wins in 2004 and 2008 at Belmont Park, Zito’s horses have come in second there seven different times. And in addition to Justify’s already slim odds of snagging the Triple Crown title, he also got a bruised knee at the Kentucky Derby and raced back-to-back on wet tracks.

The additional length at Belmont often tires out these horses, Zito said. Even the sand on the track at Belmont feels tougher — it’s deeper, softer and can be tough to trudge through. And Triple Crown-vying horses often have to compete with thoroughbreds who didn’t appear in Kentucky or Baltimore, now stepping into the arena with fresher and more energetic legs.

On top of all of these conditions, for horses to even have a shot at the Triple Crown, they must have an excellent pedigree, Zito said. That means these winning race horses likely come from lineages that exhibited both speed and stamina, as well as intelligence and good judgement. Secretariat, the legendary thoroughbred who won the 1973 Triple Crown, is the pinnacle of these sets of qualities, Zito said. While Justify has a strong pedigree of his own, “you can’t say he’s Secretariat-safe,” Zito said.

There are also a range of ways a race could go all wrong and destroy a shut at the title. A horse can simply have a slow day, or he could have a poor start when the starting gates break away.

But if the stars align correctly, perhaps Justify can join the high ranks of the Triple Crown winners before him. Indeed, Zito doesn’t just want Justify to win. He’s hoping to see Justify win Belmont by “many” lengths — perhaps inspiring memories of Secretariat’s historic 1973 finish.

“You need stars in racing like everything else,” Zito said. “We’re always looking for stars. And that’s what (Justify) looks like.”

See Jim Carrey (with Long Hair!) as He Prepares His Return to TV

Before he was an A-list movie star, Canadian comedian Jim Carrey, 56, starred in the sketch comedy series In Living Color from 1990-1994. (Anyone remember his beloved Fire Marshall Bill character?)

This fall, the actor, painter and screenwriter will make his first return to the small screen in Showtime’s Kidding, portraying a lovable and kind Mr. Rogers-like television character called Mr. Pickles who uses puppets to teach wisdom and lessons to impressionable young minds.

When Mr. Pickles goes through a personal crisis, he’s starts slowly breaking down, and his producers start worrying that his precarious mental state will destroy Mr. Pickles’ image.

Carrey, who at the height of his fame won a Golden Globe for The Truman Show, has recently taken a turn behind the scenes, as the executive producer of I’m Dying Up Here.

He’s also taken to showing off his impressive talents as an artist — with his cartoons and paintings most often lampooning and critiquing the presidency.

Kidding will come out this fall on Showtime.

How Long Do You Expect Your Clothes to Last?

Here’s something I’ve been thinking about: how long do you expect your clothes to last these days? I know I’ve seen a lot of comment threads lately about how people feel like clothes 10-15 years ago were made with better lining, better fabrics, and so forth — but in today’s environment (particularly where the trends seem to change so much more quickly than they did a few years ago), how long do you expect things to last? What fabrics and brands make the best “investment” pieces that wear like iron and have classic shapes and styles? And which fabrics and brands do you avoid?

For my $ .02, I’ve been pretty disappointed in some of the nicer pieces I’ve bought recently — one $ 100+ sweater got a hole in it after a few wearings (not as big a hole as the stock photo, but still!), and a pair of $ 160 pants started pilling after two wears. They’re both still wearable… but it’s annoying because I had bought both pieces hoping they’d last several seasons.

A few more questions to ponder as we discuss how long clothes should last:

  • What does your fashion math look like these days? Do you still expect to get more than one season out of clothes (or several years’ worth of wear)? What price do you put on cost-per-wear? (Here’s another super old post for you: our 2009 discussion of how much do you spend on clothes, which is a bit more cost-per-item focused than our last discussion on annual clothes budgets)
  • What is the average age of the items in your work wardrobe? What is the oldest piece of work clothing you still wear?
  • How much do you feel like laundry/dry cleaning matters in terms of extending the cost-per-wear for these items?
  • For those of you who have a capsule wardrobe for work, how often do you replace pieces? I know some women try to keep a minimal wardrobe and limit it to 30 pieces… Are you satisfied when a piece you’ve worn to death needs to be retired, or sad?
  • When your clothes fail you and get rips, pills, holes, etc — do you have any wardrobe hacks that help you make the clothes last longer, either to maintain your dignity for the day of or to keep it in your wardrobe rotation in general? The woman in the stock photo has a scarf on, to hide the rip one presumes (fun fact: I bought this photo for another story and then was annoyed to discover the huge rip because it makes no sense in the context of the photo!) — but if this were actually my sweater I might try to stitch it up and then wear a brooch over it, or a longer scarf to cover the stitch. (Readers with great solutions for fallen hems, please share!)

I can’t wait to hear your thoughts, ladies — how long do you expect your clothes to last these days? What are your favorite brands and stores for great, long-lasting clothes? What are your best wardrobe hacks to make your clothes last longer?

Long Weekend Sales Hoedown – 40% off Italian Wool Suits, Spier & Mackay $30 Off, Ledbury Savings, & More

IT’S NOT JUST A HANDFUL. IT’S A HOEDOWN.

hoedownin

Why hoedown? Too much for a handful. Enjoy the long weekend fellas. And not to nag,
but come Monday, don’t forget what that day is actually about. Despite the two holidays being different,
we’re sticking with the same policy as Veterans Day come Monday. We won’t be posting.

B.R.: 40% off no BR Merch Exclusions w/ BRSUMMER + Free 3-5 Day Ship on $ 100+ w/ BRSHIP

BR’s offer for the weekend just got a whole lot better. 40% off, and now there’s no BR Merchandise exclusions. Nice. Also, if you trip the $ 100 threshold, you can get a bit faster than normal shipping with that BRSHIP code. Also, if you’re a cardmember, don’t forget to use the code BRCARD at checkout for an additional 10% off.

J. Crew: 40% off Select Full Price w/ GETAWAY

J. Crew

40% off is nothing to sneeze at. Usually they go 30% off for big weekends. Exclusions are all over the place (looks like most sportcoats are out, but some suiting is in?) but there’s plenty to consider. Like those Palma sunglasses. More on those over here.

Brooks Bros: Extra 25% off Select Clearance + 4 Shirts for $ 199

Brooks Brothers

Great for those of us who love Brooks Brothers… yet don’t usually operate on a Brooks Brothers budget. Personally, I’m a big fan of their Regent fit sportcoats. Especially when on double sale like this.

Spier & Mackay: $ 30 off Sportcoats w/ COATUSA

Spier & Mackay

Half canvas construction. Easy to tailor, non functioning sleeve cuffs. Smartly designed linings (often partial depending on the fabric). Spier & Mackay knows what they’re doing when it comes to jackets. And now, their sportcoats are thirty bucks off through Sunday. Cotton sportcoats start at $ 198, so down to $ 168 with the discount. Higher end fabrics usually go for $ 398, and now drop to $ 368. Plenty in between those two price points too.

AE Factory 2nds: Memorial Day Weekend Savings

Allen Edmonds

Look for the shoes that have the strikethrough prices (ie something like: $ 299 $ 249). Those are the shoes getting the extra cuts this weekend. Why did they pick those particular models to get the fat cuts? Beats me. But some of them are rare birds that have gotten oddly large discounts. Remember, its a gamble since these are 2nds quality (cosmetic blemishes picked up during the manufacturing process). And it’s not risk free in terms of cash. They’re still demanding a steep $ 25 restocking fee on returned factory 2nds.

J.C.F.: 50% off Everything + Extra 50% off Clearance w/ WINWIN

J. Crew Factory

Yes, suits are included in this one too. Sportcoats and suits have been getting excluded a lot lately. So if you’ve had your eye on something in their Thompson Fit, now’s not a bad time to jump on it.

Domestic Domestic: 30% off Sitewide w/ MOON

Big thanks to Adam T. for the tip on this one. How can a small outfit like this company offer this sort of blanket, site wide discount? Beats the heck out of me. But it’s worth some browsing if you’re the rugged type who still has an eye for good aesthetics.

Ledbury: $ 50 off 2 Shirts, $ 150 off 4, $ 250 off 6 (STARTS 5/24)

Ledbury Blue Fine Twill Shirt | Dappered.com

If you love Ledbury, then now is one of the few times of the year that you can get their shirts on a discount. It’s not a huge discount, but it is something. Doesn’t work on polo shirts. And note that this deal isn’t active until Thursday. No code needed. Discount automatically applies at checkout.

Huckberry: Select Long Weekend Deals

Astorflex chelseas have dropped back down for the weekend. And for that audio stuff… B&O = Bang & Olufsen. I’m not really Mr. Audiophile, BUT… I’ve been lucky enough to drive a few automobiles with some Bang & Olufsen sound systems in them, and they’re friggin’ top notch. UPDATE: Looks like the wireless earbuds are NOT getting any kind of discount? Sorry about that.

UNIQLO: 2 Easy Care Dress Shirts for $ 49.90 (reg. $ 29.90 per)

UNIQLO

Remember these things? This is UNIQLO’s foray into the world of neck and sleeve dress shirts. Only the sleeves are much more precise compared to other dress shirts (these are down to the half inch, instead of ballpark 32/33 sizing like most makers). Usually they’re just under $ 30 a pop, but buy two, and they drop to just under $ 25 a piece.

Best Made Co.: 25% off Select w/ OUT18

Best Made Co.

Yes, this is the company that makes the absurdly expensive, painted handle axes. But they also make some mighty fine, super well made, handsome gear outside of their “hipster axe decor” collection. Much of it is made in the USA too. Just extended through May 28th.

Todd Snyder: 30% off Select Items w/ VIP30

Todd Snyder

Todd Snyder has some oddly expensive stuff (look at their selection of athleisure) yet then they have some pretty reasonably priced items. $ 600 for a made in Canada, stretch Italian wool suit ain’t half bad. The fact that it’s on sale is something else.

Nordstrom: Half-Yearly Sale is On

Nordstrom

Just in case you missed it. Picks are here. And as always, everything ships and returns for free. Appreciation for a retailer minimizing that risk is… up there. It’s something.

Massdrop: AE Factory 2nds Chukkas / Orient Mako II Diver

Massdrop

Two wheelhouse products for those of us that frequent this site. The thing about the factory 2nds chukkas is… factory 2nds are a tough ask on final sale. Because you just don’t know what that blemish/flaw is gonna look like until it shows up. Normal price for those AE Massdrop chukkas is $ 239. So, some savings, but not massive. Meanwhile, that Orient Mako II has dropped to $ 129 since so many people have bought in. Final sale on both and since it’s Massdrop, you’ll have to wait a while for delivery. It’s pre-order after all. UPDATE: Looks like they just added the Orient Ray II for $ 139.99.

GAP: Up to 50% off + Extra 20% off & free Ship w/ PARTY

GAP

It’s the “up to” distinction that’s key here. So the site’s not half off, some of it is, a few items may be, but much of it isn’t. That said, free shipping no minimum is a nice bonus if you’re the type who shops for one piece at a time.

Nordstrom Half Yearly Sale Dappered Space Picks

Nordstrom Half Yearly Sale Dappered Space Picks

Of course there’s a ton more where all this comes from, but Nordy’s home department can tend to lean towards more feminine style sensibilities. Still, there are some nice finds that’ll look great in a guy’s space. And of course, everything ships and returns free.

Also worth a mention:

  • Nordstrom Rack: Extra 25% off clearance items. Prices are as marked and have been updated.
  • Bonobos: The 20% off code BLUEMOON appears to still be active.
  • East Dane: Their Big Spring Sale has launched. And since they’re operated by Amazon, everything ships fast and free.
  • Cool Material: 20% off their store, some exclusions apply, with MEMDAY

How to avoid long customs and immigration lines on your next trip

So you’ve just sat on a plane for thirteen hours traveling from Indonesia, what you’ll then have to do is stand in line for another few hours waiting to get through customs and immigration. If only there some sort of guide was available to help you get through quicker…

You’re standing in line, it seems as though time itself has stood still and seconds can feel like hours. Not to mention you’ve got someone behind you huffing and puffing so much you can actually feel their breath on the back of your neck. Don’t even get us started on the crying baby that seems to have followed you from the plane to the customs line.

There’s an app for that

Re-entering the country doesn’t have to be as much of a hassle as you think though. It is possible to download the Mobile Passport app on your cell phone which will get you through customs and immigration in mere minutes instead of the several hours it usually takes. It is relatively unheard of so the lines for getting through are very small at the airport. Once you’ve downloaded the app, you will need to save a bit of your basic personal information on it, such as a photo and your passport number. After you have landed and are being taxied, you can take your phone off airplane mode and access the app. You will have to answer some basic questions just like you would at customs. Once complete and you’ve arrived at the customs kiosks you can head on over to the Mobile Passport lane and show them the QR code you’ll get for completing the questions on the Mobile Passport app. Show them the code and then proceed through and you can leave the misery of standing in the customs and immigration line to everyone else. You can even include your family members traveling with you.

Global Entry

You can enroll in the Global Entry scheme which gains quicker passage through customs and immigration for American citizens. Low-risk travelers qualify, and it allows them to bypass lines when they get to customs and immigration in the U.S. They just have to simply stroll up to a kiosk and enter their pin number, known as a Trusted Traveler number, along with doing a fingerprint scan. The Global Entry scheme doesn’t work for family members though, they will have to become approved individually, so if you’re planning a family trip abroad, you’ll need to get the whole family enrolled or else you’ll have to wait anyway. Global Entry will set you back $ 100 for five years, which is a good return for your investment if you are a frequent traveler. You’ll just need to head over to the Global Entry website to see whether you qualify and you can begin your application process.

Those were the two tips we think will save you a bunch of time at the airport when you land back in the States. We think it is worth giving them a go as anything beats being stuck in line for hours at a time.

Time’s Up for R. Kelly—Because It’s Long Past Time to Believe Black Survivors

Women of color within the Time’s Up campaign have joined forces with the activist-led #MuteRKelly protest co-founded by Kenyette Tisha Barnes and Oronike Odeyle, joining a community of black activists demanding accountability for the allegations of assault, exploitation and abuse against the entertainer spanning decades.

No gender justice without racial justice. From the 2017 March for Racial Justice. (Stephen Melkisethian / Creative Commons

Inspired by the recent guilty verdict of Bill Cosby, Time’s Up published an open letter calling on members to join the social media campaign. “As women of color within Time’s Up,” they wrote, “we recognize that we have a responsibility to help right this wrong. We intend to shine a bright light on our WOC sisters in need. It is our hope that we will never feel ignored or silenced ever again.”

R. Kelly is an influential R&B musician, producer and songwriter who, for over two decades, has also been a known sexual predator and assailant. In 1994, he secretly and unlawfully married musician Aaliyah when she was just 15 years old; just last year, reports broke that he was brainwashing, abusing and holding young women against their will. Despite consistent and persistent allegations of abuse, sexual misconduct with minors and even child pornography, Kelly has, for too long, evaded criminal charges, maintained a successful career and dismissed and silenced his accusers.

“Over the past 25 years, the man known publicly as R. Kelly has sold 60 million albums, toured the globe repeatedly and accumulated hundreds of millions of plays on radio and streaming services,” the Time’s Up letter reads. “During this time, he also married a girl under 18 years of age; was sued by at least four women for sexual misconduct, statutory rape, aggravated assault, unlawful restraint and furnishing illegal drugs to a minor; was indicted on 21 counts of child pornography; has faced allegations of sexual abuse and imprisonment of women under threats of violence and familial harm.”

At long last, however, R. Kelly’s time is up.

In an interview with Glamour, Odeleye placed the Time’s Up letter and the growing interest in her campaign in context—crediting the #MeToo movement for a long overdue call for accountability for Kelly and other men who have abused and exploited women, and particularly women of color, with impunity. “When #MeToo broke, I knew it was an important conversation,” she told the magazine. “It’s an important step that women in power decided to take. They spoke out about their real experiences, and it emboldens the rest of us—if those women could do it, I can speak up, too. But the fact that it lacked representation of women of color in the beginning frustrated me, because it’s often women of color who experience this kind of stuff and don’t feel like there is a place to come out and talk about what’s happening to them.”

Tarana Burke, founder of the #MeToo movement, echoed those sentiments in an interview with NPR. “We have seen 24 years of allegations leveled against R. Kelly, and he has gone unscathed,” she told reporters. “So what the letter does is join the #MuteRKelly campaign, that was well on its way already, and joined the chorus of black women around the country who have been saying we want some accountability. Those things have to be interrogated. And I think at the very least we need to see corporations step away from them until we have satisfactory investigation into these allegations.”

As the #MeToo movement and the Time’s Up campaign both continue to create new spaces and conversations around sexual harassment, abuse, exploitation and violence, it is critical that we continue, as well, to ensure that nobody gets left behind. This is only the beginning, and we must continue to listen to and believe black women—and finally mute R. Kelly.

‘We’ve suffered long enough’ Ireland’s abortion battle and the young women fighting for choice

As voters face a referendum to reform Ireland’s abortion laws, Tracy Ramsden speaks to the women fighting for their future

irish abortion referendum

‘We cannot continue to export our problems and import our solutions with a situation where women in crisis are risking their lives through the use of unregulated medicines,’ said Ireland’s taoiseach, Leo Varadkar on announcing the Irish abortion referendum to repeal the Eighth Amendment that currently outlaws abortion and carries a 14-year prison sentence for women who seek treatment. His words offered hope to a new generation of women fighting the abortion ban and their right to what they see as basic healthcare.

Varadkar was referring to the 11 women every day who, as a result of the abortion ban, are forced to make the journey from Ireland to mainland UK for safe, legal treatment. ‘This marks a shift in public opinion,’ says Hannah Little, 28, one of the founders of the London-Irish Abortion Rights Campaign. ‘It feels like now is the time to right a wrong that has forced women to be exiled for too long.’

‘Nobody wants an abortion, it’s about needing it,’ says Michelle Linton, 34, from Kildare, who had a termination at 18 weeks pregnant when her son was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder, Zellweger syndrome, that meant his life expectancy was zero to six months. ‘At 16, I walked by a pro-life demo, read the leaflet in my lunch hour and decided I’d never have an abortion. Then, in 2012, I found myself in Liverpool Women’s Hospital, having made the decision to have a termination. It was the same month the news broke of 31-year-old Savita Halappanavar, who had died in Galway after being denied an emergency abortion. It was a reminder of all the hidden women who had made this journey before me, and the tragic ones who couldn’t.’

‘It was a reminder of all the hidden women who had made this journey before me, and the tragic ones who couldn’t.’

Michelle had given birth twice before her abortion – once to her healthy, now seven-year-old son Calum, and before that, to her first-born, Evan, who was diagnosed with Zellweger syndrome and died aged 11 weeks. ‘We cuddled him and he took a big breath, but he never took another one. After Evan died, I hit rock bottom. So four years later, when I fell pregnant and got the same diagnosis, I knew I couldn’t survive going through with the pregnancy.’ Like many of her friends, Michelle will be voting to repeal the Eighth Amendment in the referendum in May to lift the abortion ban, but there is a generational divide, explains Michelle. ‘Some long-held religious views may never change.’

The feeling on the ground, especially in Dublin, is that the country is on the precipice of significant progress with marches and canvassing by local MPs – spearheaded predominantly by those under 35. But with the rise of right-wing populism around the world and the unexpected results of the US election and Brexit, there’s no room for complacency.

‘It is about having these awkward conversations in small towns and villages in rural Ireland, presenting the medical facts and being mindful that it’s still a sensitive issue,’ adds Little. ‘We’re also calling on the 40,000 Irish people who live overseas, but are eligible to return home to vote. If this doesn’t go our way, it’s heartbreaking to think it could be another 50 years before we get another say on this. Our time has to be now.’

If a 16th-seeded men’s basketball team beats a No. 1-seeded team, Little Caesars will give every family a free Hot-N-Ready Lunch Combo on Monday, April 2.

The Hot-N-Ready Lunch Combo consists of four slices of Detroit-style deep-dish pepperoni pizza and one 20-ounce Pepsi product.

Obviously, I have no clue what seeded college men are — but for pizza, I will find out.

So Who Needs to Win for Me to Score Free Pizza?

You have four chances to win a free Little Caesars lunch combo.

In the South, No. 16 University of Maryland, Baltimore County must beat No. 1 University of Virginia.

In the East, No. 16 Radford must beat No. 1 Villanova.

In the West, the team that wins the March 14 Texas Southern vs. North Carolina Central game must beat No. 1 Xavier.

In the Midwest, No. 16 University of Pennsylvania must beat No. 1 University of Kansas.

If any of those No. 16 teams win, free pizza for — almost — everyone.

All games will take place March 15 and 16. If a No. 16 team does beat a No. 1 team, you must place your combo order at a participating Little Caesars location from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and mention the offer when you check out.

And if you’re going with anyone you’re related to, disown them while you’re ordering because only one person per family can get this deal.

I’d also like to point out that Little Caesars just patented a pizza-making robot, so hopefully, we’ll see a lot more free throws there in the future — hint, hint.

Jen Smith is a junior writer at The Penny Hoarder. She gives tips for saving money and paying off debt on Instagram at @savingwithspunk. She believes that pizza-making robots will bring us closer to world peace.

Darren Criss Says Engagement ‘Was a Long Time Coming’ — and Reveals He ‘Waited’ to Announce It

Darren Criss is opening up about proposing to longtime girlfriend Mia Swier, saying it “was a long time coming” after the two dated for over seven years.

The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story actor, 31, told Esquire.com in an interview published Wednesday that he and Swier “waited a while before we announced it.”

“I had a whole thing written, like, ‘Usually I don’t like talking about my private life…’ which I really don’t — I was really allergic to it for a while,” he said.

“Eventually, I got over myself and realized that it’s just the best way to let people know.”

Criss shared a photo of the two on Instagram and Twitter in January, writing, “Mia and I have had seven and a half years of fun, wacky, wonderful, CRAZY adventures together.”

“And I’m happy to announce that we’re kicking those adventures up a notch. We’re goin for it. To boldly go where neither of us have gone before. Engage,” the former Glee star added.

While it is unclear when the proposal took place, Criss and Swier last attended the Los Angeles premiere of the FX series in Hollywood together on Jan. 8. At the time, the writer was seen without an engagement ring.

In a 2013 interview, Criss briefly talked about their relationship, saying, “Oh yeah, we’ve been together a long time. I didn’t know I was going to be on TV when we started dating.”

Swier attended New York University’s Steinhardt School of Media Studies and Television Production and has worked for networks such as Fox and Showtime.

Criss is currently starring in the FX show Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story as Andrew Cunanan, the man who murdered famed fashion designer, Gianni Versace.

Tom Brady Isn’t the Highest-Paid NFL Player by a Long Shot. Here Are the Top 5

Super Bowl LII will pit the underdog Philadelphia Eagles against the New England Patriots dynasty led by quarterback Tom Brady on Feb. 4.

But it may surprise you that Brady, considered by some to be the greatest quarterback in NFL history, is not among the top 10 highest-paid NFL players, according to NFL salary and contract analysis site Over the Cap. Even more surprising about Brady’s absence from the list is that the 16 highest-paid NFL players are also quarterbacks Brady only ranks at No. 15 with an average salary of $ 20.5 million a year.

The average salary of an NFL player is $ 2.1 million, according to Forbes, but Brady’s salary still ranks far below some of his peers.

So if a five-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback who has never had a losing season in the NFL can’t crack the list of highest-paid players, who can? Here’s a look at the top 5 NFL players making the most money in 2018.

5) Kirk Cousins, Quarterback — Washington Redskins

Green Bay Packers v Washington Redskins
Rob Carr—Getty Images

Despite leading the Redskins to only one playoff appearance — in 2015 when they lost in the first round Wild Card game to the Green Bay Packers — Kirk Cousins is one of the highest-paid NFL players. He earned $ 23,943,600 in 2017 — a contract that was 100% guaranteed due to a franchise tag, which binds upcoming free agents to the team for another year, according to Over the Cap.

Cousins’ contract is up in 2018, which means he will be a free agent again. And despite not being seen as a marquee quarterback, he is likely to be one of the more desired players at the position in a subpar free agent quarterback market.

4) Drew Brees, Quarterback — New Orleans Saints

Drew Brees is consistently one of the best-performing quarterbacks in the league and his contract reflects that.

He signed a one-year contract extension with the Saints in late 2016, which netted him a 100%-guaranteed salary of $ 24.25 million, Over the Cap reports. He is also set to become a free agent in 2018, but the Saints might be keen to hold onto their Super Bowl winner, who almost led New Orleans to this year’s NFC Championship game before a miraculous last-second win by the Minnesota Vikings.

3) Andrew Luck, Quarterback — Indianapolis Colts

Indianapolis Colts v Cleveland Browns

The Colts’ franchise quarterback signed a massive six-year deal in 2016, which temporarily made Luck the highest-paid NFL player of all time.

The total deal is worth $ 122,970,000, with at least $ 47 million of that guaranteed, according to Over the Cap.

But Luck stands to miss out on some of that money if he can can’t stay healthy. The once-promising star did not play a single game in the 2017 season due to a lingering shoulder injury that required surgery.

2) Derek Carr, Quarterback — Oakland Raiders

Cincinnati Bengals v Oakland Raiders
Thearon W. Henderson—Getty Images

In June 2017, Derek Carr became the one to usurp Luck’s status as the highest-paid NFL player of all time, but that status wouldn’t last long (more on that later).

Nevertheless, Oakland’s 26-year-old franchise QB signed a whopping $ 125,025,000 contract extension over five years, of which he’ll see at least $ 40 million. It will be interesting to see how Carr makes the most out of that stability under incoming head coach Jon Gruden, who was just made the highest-paid coach in the league with his recent signing.

1) Matthew Stafford, Quarterback — Detroit Lions

New York Jets v Detroit Lions
Leon Halip—Getty Images

Just a couple of months after Carr signed his record-breaking contract, Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford made history with a five-year, $ 135 million deal that earned him the top spot on the list of highest-paid NFL players. He gets paid $ 27 million annually — the NFL’s highest-ever salary.

Stafford is also guaranteed to make at least $ 60 million, which is another NFL record.

But despite the major investment in Stafford, the Detroit Lions could not manage to make the playoffs this season.

A Travel Pro’s Tips for Staying Moisturized on Long Flights

We can all agree that travel is pretty amazing, right? Can we also agree that getting to our favorite destinations can be a total nightmare? Even if we assume your flight is on time, your luggage doesn’t get lost and you don’t miss your connecting flight, the actual travel part of traveling can take quite a toll on you physically. Sure, you may feel jet-lagged, but the worst part for me is the extreme dryness that accompanies travel, particularly long flights. I have combination skin, and it gets so dried-out when I fly for more than a few hours, it causes pretty uncomfortable dryness and irritation.

First, let’s discuss why we get so dried-out when we travel. Melissa Kanchanapoomi Levin, a clinical instructor in dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, told Allure, “Typically, skin is comfortable when the humidity is between 40 to 70 percent, most airplane cabins are at about 20 percent. That’s less than half of what we are used to.” On top of that, the high altitude of airplanes can decrease blood flow to the skin, which can result in a super-dull appearance.

I always hear tips like “Drink as much water as possible,” and “Avoid alcohol,” and I do those things too, but they’re not always enough. I’ve been on plenty of flights that are over 10 hours, and no matter how much water I drink, my skin, eyes and nose will still be dry as a bone. Luckily, I have figured out a beauty routine that keeps everything moisturized and comfortable so I am ready to go as soon as the plane lands. Here are the five products (in addition to lots of water!) you need to ensure a comfy and moisturized flight.

1. A moisture mask

My moisture routine starts the night before I travel. I use this moisturizing water mask by Laneige the night before a flight. It gives my skin a nice head start and feels super-luxurious.

Image: Laneige

2. A sheet mask

Hear me out on this one. It may look odd to those around you, but there is no better method of moisturizing your skin on a long flight. I usually bring a couple of masks with me in my carry-on and use one every four to five hours of flight time. They’re super-easy to carry around, and you just toss them in the trash when you’re done. Just make sure to choose a mask specifically meant for hydration, and avoid brightening, clarifying or exfoliating masks. This mask by Dr.Jart+ is my favorite.

Image: Sephora

3. Lip balm

I’ve tried more expensive lip balms than I can count, but this super-cheap one by Vaseline works better than anything else I have ever tried. It’s super-thick and keeps you moisturized for hours. You do have to use your finger to apply it, so just make sure to wash your hands first because as we all know, planes are ridiculously dirty, and every surface is crawling with germs.

Image: Target

Vaseline Lip Therapy, $ 1.89 at Target

4. Saline nasal spray

My skin and lips aren’t the only body parts to take a beating on long flights. My nose gets super-dried-out too, and it can be uncomfortable and can even cause nosebleeds. To combat the dryness, I use a saline nasal spray every one to two hours. This spray is my favorite because it’s small, light and TSA-approved. It does come in a few different sizes, so just make sure you pick up the one that is less than 3 ounces.

Image: Arm & Hammer

Arm & Hammer Simply Saline Nasal Mist, prices vary, but it can be found at Target, Walmart and most grocery stores

5. Hydrating eye drops

This is actually a recommendation from my eye doctor. I told her what a terrible time I have with dry eyes on a plane, and she suggested using some lubricating drops. If you have eye problems, you should check with your doctor to make sure these will work for you, but my doctor said these OTC lubricating eye drops are pretty darn safe and fine to use for long flights.

5 Super Slow and 5 Super Fast Recipes For Long Workdays

all day crockpot recipesIf one of your holiday gifts last year was a new pressure cooker or slow cooker (Instant Pot included), or if you just haven’t been getting enough mileage out of either or both of these kitchen appliances, we thought we’d round up some recipes for inspiration. Here are five all day crockpot recipes and five super fast Instant Pot recipes we’re interested in trying — slow for the long workdays, and fast when you want to make something quick (15 minutes or less) when you get home from work and can’t deal with another meal from Seamless or the freezer. Do you have a new pressure cooker or slow cooker that you’ve been trying out? What are your favorite sources of recipes (or recipes!) for them? Do you have any go-to fast or slow meals?

Psst: We’ve also talked about slow cooker recipes for working women, shared Instant Pot tips, and discussed the best cookware and kitchen appliances — and Kat’s shared some of her easy weeknight dinners in the past as well.

Here are some workday-friendly recipes to try in your slow cooker or pressure cooker:

All Day Crockpot Recipes: Up to 10 Hours

These work really well for long workdays — a cooker with a timer can keep your meal warm for another 1–2 hours after it’s finished cooking.

  • A Year of Slow Cooking suggests meals with beans — even after hours of cooking, they won’t be dried out. Prep time: soak beans overnight (or 1–2 hours); cook time: 9 hours on low.
  • Recipes that Crock has a recipe for Italian pot roast. Prep time: 5 minutes; cook time: 8–10 hours on low).
  • Skinny Taste shares an easy recipe for jerk pork with Caribbean salsa. Prep time: marinate overnight; cook time: 9 hours on low.
  • The Skinny Fork shares a spaghetti squash Thai “noodle” bowl. Prep time: 1 minute to poke holes in squash, plus a few minutes to prep dressing and steam broccoli; cook time: 8–9 hours on low.
  • Cafe Johnsonia offers a vegan option for white bean stew. Prep time: 20 minutes; cook time: 8–10 hours on low.

Super Fast Instant Pot Recipes: 15 Minutes or Less

If you get home late or just don’t have much time to cook, try these quick and easy recipes.

  • Instant Pot shares a 1-minute pork chops and homemade applesauce recipe.
  • Health Starts in the Kitchen offers a 5-minute salmon and rice pilaf recipe.
  • A Fork’s Tale has a 15-minute orange chicken recipe that can be made while you steam broccoli and prepare rice.
  • The Sausagetarian offers a curried red lentil and sweet potato soup that is ready in about 10 minutes, including prep time.
  • Two Sleevers has a 10-minute recipe for chicken tikka masala. At the end, you remove the chicken and freeze half of the sauce for leftovers. (You’ll probably want to marinate the chicken for 1–2 hours ahead of time.)

Do you have a slow cooker and/or pressure cooker? What are your favorite all day crockpot recipes, or super fast Instant Pot recipes for when you’re short on time in the evenings?

Kim Kardashian West Says She’s ‘Going Back’ to Long Hair as She Shows Off Platinum Extensions

Kim Kardashian West is planning a whole new hairdo for 2018!

The Keeping Up With the Kardashians star revealed she’s changing up her platinum shoulder-length bob on Saturday as she shared a series of videos on social media that featured a set of platinum hair extensions from ChaViv Hair by Violet Teriti.

“Okay, we are going back long,” said Kardashian West, 37, in one video of the extensions. “Long and blonde, I’m gonna put extensions in because my short, natural blunt is annoying me.”

The KKW Beauty mogul’s hair artist Chris Appleton also shared a tutorial on his Instagram page —alongside a photo of Kardashian West wearing the hair extensions — as he explained how fans could copy the look for themselves.

Although 2018 has just begun, this hasn’t been the first time this year that Kardashian West — who’s currently expecting her third child with Kanye West via surrogacy — has hinted that she’s ready to change up her hairstyle.

Last week, the soon-to-be mother of three suggested that she was thinking about ditching the blonde locks and returning to her natural hair color.

“Dark hair for the new year?” she captioned a throwback picture of herself.

The star also seemed like she might be missing her long brunette locks when she posted a nearly nude photo of herself on Friday, in which she was dressed in nothing but a white thong.

Rise & Grind,” Kardashian West captioned the photo, which captured her laying on her side on a bed, with her hand covering her chest, her thong revealing her bare butt, and her long brown hair strewn across the pillow.

Regardless of when the photo was taken, everyone — including commenters and her family — took notice. The star’s pregnant sister, Khloé Kardashian, commented on the shot, “Now you’re showing off!!” and added a few tornado emojis in a separate comment.

Either way, you’ll thank yourself once winter officially rolls around.

How Long Do You Spend On Your Hair for Work?

Here’s a question I don’t think we’ve talked about before: How long do you spend on your hair for work? Did you choose your cut in order to spend less time on your hair? Do you prefer to spend a lot of time in one chunk (such as going to get a blowout once a week (or give yourself one) and then just brush-and-go your hair the rest of the week? Do you do your hair the same way every day, or do you have a “third-day hair” look (or, hey, a fourth- or fifth-day hair look)? There’s no right answer here, obviously — I’m just curious!

For my $ .02, when I was younger I probably spent about 30–40 minutes a day on my wavyish hair — washing it daily, blowdrying it as well as possible. There were years where I spent time with a roundbrush and the blowdryer on a daily basis trying to flatten the coarser waves on the back of my head! (I even had a weird headband technique that I thought saved me time — I would take a hard plastic headband with teeth and, after blowdrying, wear it on top of my hair, around my neck, for about 15 minutes while I finished getting ready.) I definitely tried and discarded some hairstyles because they just required too much upkeep on my hair — for example, I loved the look of an asymmetrical bob but it only looked good if my hair was stick straight and freshly cut.

As I’ve gotten older the waves have become curls (I’m probably around 2C/3A for most of my head, with some annoying underlayers that are still more like 2A wavy) and my hair has gotten drier, so I wash it much less frequently, let it air dry at night, and am more likely to throw it up in a bun or other updo (or half-updo) for daily wear, with a commitment to getting a proper blowout when I’ve got any major meetings to attend. (I’ve always just popped in my local salon for a blowout, but I was blown away with how quickly the woman at Drybar did my hair — I swear she had it done in 30 minutes when it can sometimes take as long as 60–70 minutes elsewhere.) This week I’m going for another keratin appointment, which will ultimately reduce styling/drying time — but spending three hours on my hair at once seems like a huge time suck!

How about you guys: How much time do you spend on your hair for work? How much time you spend on a daily, weekly, monthly basis? What tips and tricks have you found to help you spend less time on your hair for work?

Psst: we’ve talked about how to make a blowout last for days, your favorite dry shampoo, easy office updos, and lots more about office hairstyles in general.

Long Sitting Periods May Be Just as Harmful as Daily Total

A new study finds that it isn’t just the amount of time spent sitting, but also the way in which sitting time is accumulated during the day that can affect risk of early death.

The study, published online September 11, 2017 in Annals of Internal Medicine, found that adults who sit for one to two hours at a time without moving have a higher mortality rate than adults who accrue the same amount of sedentary time in shorter bouts.

Those with the greatest amount of sedentary time—more than 13 hours per day—and who frequently had sedentary bouts of at least 60 to 90 consecutive minutes had a nearly two-fold increase in death risk compared with those who had the least total sedentary time and the shortest sedentary bouts.

“We tend to think of sedentary behavior as just the sheer volume of how much we sit around each day,” said Keith Diaz, PhD, associate research scientist in the Department of Medicine at Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) and lead investigator of the study. “But previous studies have suggested that sedentary patterns—whether an individual accrues sedentary time through several short stretches or fewer long stretches of time—may have an impact on health.”

The researchers used hip-mounted activity monitors to objectively measure inactivity during waking time over a period of seven days in 7,985 black and white adults over age 45. (The participants were taking part in the REGARDS study, a national investigation of racial and regional disparities in stroke.)

On average, sedentary behavior accounted for 77 percent of the participants’ waking hours, equivalent to more than 12 hours per day. Over a median follow-up period of four years, 340 of the participants died. Mortality risk was calculated for those with various amounts of total sedentary time and various sedentary patterns. Those with the greatest amount of sedentary time—more than 13 hours per day—and who frequently had sedentary bouts of at least 60 to 90 consecutive minutes had a nearly two-fold increase in death risk compared with those who had the least total sedentary time and the shortest sedentary bouts.

The researchers also found that participants who kept most of their sitting bouts to less than 30 minutes had the lowest risk of death. “So if you have a job or lifestyle where you have to sit for prolonged periods of time, we suggest taking a movement break every half hour. This one behavior change could reduce your risk of death, although we don’t yet know precisely how much activity is optimal,” Dr. Diaz said.

The study was the largest to link objectively measured sedentary time and sedentary patterns with mortality risk.

The researchers also found that participants who kept most of their sitting bouts to less than 30 minutes had the lowest risk of death.

“This study adds to the growing literature on how dangerous long periods of sitting are for our health and underscores a growing awareness among clinicians and researchers that sitting really is the new smoking,” said study co-author Monika Safford, MD, chief of the Division of General Internal Medicine and the John J. Kuiper Professor at Weill Cornell Medicine and an internist at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. “We need creative ways to ensure that we not only cut back on the total amount we sit, but also increase regular interruptions to sitting with bursts of activity.” Dr. Safford is the PI on one of the REGARDS ancillary studies and provided the cardiac events data for this paper.

The study is titled “Patterns of sedentary behavior and mortality in U.S. middle-aged and older adults: A national cohort study.”

The other authors are Virginia J. Howard (University of Alabama at Birmingham, Birmingham, AL), Brent Hutto (UAB), Natalie Colabianchi (University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI), John E. Vena (Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, SC), Steven N. Blair (University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC), and Steven P. Hooker (Arizona State University, Phoenix, AZ).

The study was supported by the National Institutes of Health (UO1-NS041588 and R01-NS061846) and the Coca-Cola Company.

The authors report no financial or other conflicts of interest.

10 Games to Binge Over the Long Weekend

The long weekend is upon us, and if you don’t have elaborate barbecuing plans or are trekking up to Seattle for PAX West, you’re going to find yourself with time on your hands. Maybe you have a backlog of games from the spring release rush that you’re hoping to chip away at. Or maybe you have nothing teed up and you’re looking for something new (or classic) to while away the hours of three glorious days to yourself. Well, we’ve got you covered.

Anything from Telltale Games

Telltale Games has become synonymous with episodic series, and over the past five years has delivered an embarrassment of riches in terms of story variety. There’s The Wolf Among Us, based on the acclaimed Fables comic series; an entire season dedicated to another story in the world of HBO’s Game of Thrones; takes on Batman and Guardians of the Galaxy; and a romp through Minecraft. And of course, who can forget the emotion and horror of their stories set in the universe of The Walking Dead — three seasons worth, to be exact!

The Uncharted series

With Uncharted: The Lost Legacy fresh on our minds, it was hard not to offer up the entire series as a binge-able option. Each game’s story runs about 12 hours or so, depending on how much of a completionist you are. That way, you can boot up your PlayStation 4 on Friday night after happy hour and end with the most recent release, The Lost Legacy, on Monday evening. Who could be a better long weekend date than Nathan Drake?

Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia

For those of you who are more into strategy games but still want something that will hold your attention for 72 hours, look no further than the Fire Emblem series. The most recent game, Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia on Nintendo 3DS is a meaty entry into the series, with a hefty story to guide you through dozens of hours of combat. Battles play out like in chess, with a player’s units scattered across a grid, and each unit bringing their own unique set of weapons and attacks to the table. If you’re looking for something to tickle your brain as well as tick away the time, this is the game for you.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Maybe you’ve started Breath of the Wild game already, and maybe you haven’t. Either way, it’s a certified time sink. If you haven’t begun your journey into the latest iteration of Hyrule, then grab your Switch and get going, for crying out loud! You can take your time exploring the world or beeline straight through the main story to the final boss — the choice is entirely up to you. And for those of us who may haven’t found every hidden shrine and secret, and who have at least several-hundred Koroks left to find, the long weekend is a perfect time for some uninterrupted hunting.

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor came out in 2014 to critical acclaim, and with its sequel Shadow of War just two months away, it’s likely time for a refresh or a first introduction. Set in author J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy world and taking place in the timeline between the stories of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, the Shadow games follow Talion, a Ranger haunted by the wraith of an ancient Elven king who has returned from beyond to take revenge on the Dark Lord Sauron. See, you’re already intrigued.

Final Fantasy XV

Though traditional Final Fantasy games were one-and-done affairs, the team behind Final Fantasy XV has treated the game more like an ongoing service, releasing new content for it every few weeks. As we approach the game’s one-year anniversary, we have another embarrassment of riches in terms of content on the horizon. This includes a multiplayer expansion, a new story-driven DLC episode in December, and a collaboration with Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed series featuring crossover content — and some stylish new costumes. Power through the story to get ready for these upcoming in-game events, or if you’ve finished the story already, take some time to explore the other bonus content and side quests that the world of Eos has to offer.

Splatoon 2

Be the freshest homebody this weekend and take some time to perfect your game in Splatoon 2. This competitive shooter — though Nintendo doesn’t like to call it a shooter, since you’re splatting ink and not using bullets — is colorful and fun, with quite a boisterous online community. If the online horde mode Salmon Run is open — and we desperately hope it will be — hop in and splat through waves of increasingly weirder enemies to an amazing soundtrack.

Overwatch

Or you could just, you know, stomp fools in Overwatch all weekend. Never a dull moment here!

Pokemon Go

If you’re looking for something a little more involved — and a lot less couch potato-y — grab your smartphone of choice and take a walk. Provided you’re in a more populated area, there’s bound to be a dearth of Pokemon to catch and gyms to battle in Pokemon Go. As the game prepares to welcome Mewtwo to its ranks of catchable critters, now is a good time to level up (and get some steps in).

Life is Strange

The sequel to Life is Strange, Life is Strange: Before the Storm, releases its first episode right before the long weekend. Catch up with the story and get a little more context for the adventures of Chloe Price with the original game, which was released as four episodes back in 2015. It’s a drama set in the northwestern U.S. with some supernatural elements, sort of like a Twin Peaks light; so if that’s up your alley, then you can play through the entire series (with breaks to chew on its reveals) over the long weekend.
