How Boy Love Anime’s Rape Problem Damages the Queer Community

In the anime Love Stage, Izumi and Ryoma are two star crossed lovers. Thanks to a cross dressing mishap, handsome celebrity Ryoma discovers his childhood crush, Izumi, is actually a boy. When he realizes he has feelings for another man, Ryoma goes to Izumi’s house to confront him, forces Izumi to undress… and ultimately tries to rape him.

It’s an incredibly shocking scene for an anime that promotes itself as a saccharine sweet love story. Nothing in the pink and flowery opening title sequence or key art implies that Love Stage is a story about sexual abuse.

Love Stage isn’t unique. It’s part of a sub genre of anime called shounen-ai or “boy love.” Crunchyroll, and other anime streaming services are full of these shows, and they all have similar names: Love Stage, Super Lovers, World’s Greatest First Love.

Popular shounen-ai titles: Love Stage!!, Super Lovers, World's Greatest First Love

On the surface, boy love anime are presented as flowery love stories about young men discovering their feelings for one another, but all too quickly these stories take dark turns. Nearly all shounen-ai anime has the same issues and problems, thanks to their reliance on tropes.

Anime fans are well aware of how prevalent tropes are. They’re in every anime, from Dragon Ball Z, to My Hero Academia, to Yu-Gi-Oh.

Anime tropes can be benign, like high school students running with toast in their mouth. Oftentimes they’re somewhat problematic fan service, like magical girl costume changes.

Romance anime has its own set of tropes, prevalent in straight and gay stories alike. And in the case of shounen-ai, these tropes become deeply troubling instances that present a warped and dangerous view of gay relationships.

So let’s break down these common themes and why they’re so damaging to queer representation.

Trope 1: Older man with much younger guy

One of the most obvious and apparent tropes in boy love shows are that the main couple have a substantial age difference. There is always a distinct seme (top) and uke (bottom) in the relationships, which creates a distinct power dynamic.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with this, but in boy love anime the uke character is often presented as VERY young. They may technically be an adult, or likely a teen, but they have the body of an early pubescent boy. This is often spelled out clearly, that this 16 year old boy looks like a 12 year old.

Haru and Ren in 'Super Lovers' have a significant age difference that is noted as taboo in the show.

There’s a damaging and untrue stereotype that gay men are predators, on the prowl for younger boys. The term “recruiter” is used to describe older gay men that lure otherwise straight boys into a life of perversion, and the relationships in shounen-ai perpetuate this perceived dynamic.

It also reinforces the intrinsically misogynistic stereotype that the bottom in a gay relationship is the “woman.” The uke character is frail, too weak to resist the advances of his seme. He is almost always soft skinned, effeminate, and sometimes even voiced by a woman. In addition to this being an extremely narrow and increasingly incorrect portrayal of gay dynamics, it’s also a very boring way to think about gay characters.

Trope 2. Sexual assault

You don’t have to get very far in any shounen-ai anime before there’s a scene of sexual assault. In every one, the seme character has physically pinned the uke against something and is forcing themselves upon them. Oftentimes this results in a scene of violence that’s played off as a gag, and almost always the assaulted character flees the situation, only to come back the very next episode.

Even if the character is traumatized by the experience, other characters offer no support. In Love Stage, Izumi’s own friends and family brush off his assault because nothing actually happened, and they liken the experience of Izumi being forcibly stripped and overpowered as “no worse than a mosquito bite” which is both ludicrous and infuriating.

Look, if your romance story starts with attempted rape… you’re telling a very shitty love story.

It’s painful to watch a character describe the man who assaulted him as his true love, and it sets an incredibly bad example for impressionable gay youth. It sends the message that people should go back to their abusers, and that if the victim loves the abuser enough, then the abuse will be replaced by love. Frankly that’s a dangerous message to send.

He does not stop.

And why is this even a thing? If Boruto started with Naruto forcing himself on Hinata nobody would be down with that, but in romance anime it’s expected that consent will be tossed out the window.

Writing this off as fiction does everyone a disservice because rape is a real problem. Furthermore it gives a worrisome look into Japan’s broader shame culture problem that pressures victims of rape against speaking out. A 2014 Cabinet Office study showed that only 4% of sexual assault victims in Japan actually report the crime to the police, and of those, few were successfully prosecuted.

Trope 3: The main characters aren’t really gay

In most shounen-ai anime, the seme and oftentimes the uke as well, are presented as mostly straight. They like girls, and even go on dates with them, too. They’re not gay, they just have such a connection with this one specific guy that it transcends their heterosexuality.

Now I can actually get behind anime that showcase a bi or pansexual character, but that’s not the impression that’s given. The characters rarely if ever self-identify as anything but straight. Because shounen-ai and yaoi are made for an assumed straight female audience, as opposed to gay men, the characters within them always stay… available. They’re not gay because in Japanese media gay men look and act a certain way…

Puri-puri Prisoner from 'One Punch Man' is an example of a gay stereotype character. A weird combination of hyper masculinity and flowery femininity… oh and also he's a serial rapist because of course he is.

By not making the characters actually gay, shounen-ai continues the othering of gay men. Sometimes the anime will make the distinction very clear, showing offensive and incorrect stereotypes of gay men as a comparison to the main couple. This fits the star crossed lover narrative so common in romance anime, but it prevents gay relationships from being normalized.

Trope 4: Main character is traumatized/broken

The poor poor boys of shounen-ai anime are usually pretty broken. Maybe they watched their parents die right in front of their eyes. Maybe they had a childhood trauma they never got over. Maybe they were… raised by wolves? What the hell?!

Lemme make this clear, with big ol clapping hand emojis.

GAY 👏 PEOPLE 👏  ARE 👏 NOT 👏 BROKEN 👏

We didn’t become gay because we’re otakus. Or because our bodies are small and thin. Or because one time a boy was mean to us in middle school. By making the characters in shounen-ai all stunted, broken, or traumatized people it gives the impression that being gay is not normal. That there is something fundamentally wrong with you to make you fall in love with another guy. It’s messed up and shows a lack of nuance about sexuality that is pretty shocking in this day and age.

So what can we do?

I wish I had a solution to this issue, but when it comes to anime, we as a Western audience have very little pull. But what we can start to do is to stop excusing this and other overly problematic tropes. All too often when issues with anime are brought up, the answer is a general shrug of “Well, Japan is a different culture.”

I think this excuse does a disservice to us, and Japan. It’s a very impotent way to view ourselves, as helpless to affect positive change on a global scale, and in a world that is increasingly more global thanks to the Internet, we know this isn’t true.

Furthermore, it’s insulting to Japanese people to claim that negative stereotypes are part of their culture, as if homophobia is a time honored tradition up there with shogi or kendo.

With American companies like Crunchyroll and Netflix bringing anime en masse to the states, we need to be more particular about what messages we’re promoting.

It’s important that young people, gay youth especially, have positive and realistic portrayals in media. Growing up, it’s all too easy to think there’s something wrong with you, and if you’re watching anime that reinforces this thought, it can damage you at a very formative time in your life.

Now, it’s not all bad. While shounen-ai is a flaming garbage pile, there have been notable examples of positive gay representation in anime and manga. While not overtly gay, Yuri!! on ICE takes the common tropes of sports anime’s latent homoeroticism and uses it to tell a love story on top of the broader sports plot.

Gengoroh Tagame’s manga series My Brother’s Husband is both an examination of gay relationships, and the differences between Japanese and Western society’s views on many social dynamics and issues.

And if you like the notion of shounen-ai anime and want a more positive Western spin, check out the Academy Award winning film Call Me By Your Name. It’s a beautiful and thoughtful romance that does everything a shounen-ai anime does, with none of the damaging stereotypes.

Hopefully in time, we’ll see anime continue its trend towards more accepting and thoughtful portrayals of all kinds of people. But before we can get there, things like shounen-ai’s rape culture storylines need to go.

Women’s Aid issues an abuse warning after Adam’s ‘manipulative’ behaviour on Love Island

Here’s what’s being said…

Love Island got dramatic this week, with ‘couple’ Rosie Williams and Adam Collard seeming to call their relationship quits, with Adam neglecting Rosie for a new attraction, Zara.

But it’s not the separation that has got the world talking, but instead the way it came about, and was dealt with by the 22-year-old personal trainer.

ITV/REX/Shutterstock

When he was confronted by a tearful Rosie, he appeared to mock her reaction, and viewers were horrified to watch him manipulate her into believing that it was her fault, taking to Twitter to voice their outrage.

‘Seriously – laughing at a girl crying because you betrayed her trust and led her on…that’s just the worst thing you can do,’ tweeted one user.

Another posted: ‘Adam’s a controlling, mass manipulating wench. He has constantly humiliated girls, making them feel insecure &to blame for his disloyalties & disrespect.’

And it wasn’t just Love Island viewers who were concerned, with domestic abuse charity, Women’s Aid, using Adam’s behaviour as a warning of abuse.

Whilst accepting that Love Island is an artificial environment, Katie Ghose, chief executive of Women’s Aid explained that Adam’s actions on the outside world could be seen as emotional abuse.

ITV/REX/Shutterstock

‘In a relationship, a partner questioning your memory of events, trivialising your thoughts or feelings, and turning things around to blame you can be part of pattern of gaslighting and emotional abuse,’ explained Katie.

What should people do therefore?

ITV/REX/Shutterstock

Speak out. According to Katie, viewers who are in similar situations should ‘join [Rosie] in recognising unhealthy behaviour in relationships and speaking out against all forms of domestic abuse – emotional as well as physical’.

‘It is only when we make a stand together against abuse in relationships that we will see attitudes change and an end to domestic abuse.’

We couldn’t agree more.

What Songs Would Make the Cut of Your ’90s R&B ‘Love Is’ Spotify Playlist?

In honor of the new show, Love Is____, which premiered last night on OWN, and following suit of the creators, Mara Brock Akil, Salim Akil, and Oprah Winfrey herself, here is a list of our top 10 ’90s R&B songs (and ones from the early ’00s) that would make our overly indulgent Spotify playlist.

Our ’90s R&B Spotify Playlist

ABOUT LOVE IS_____

Michele Weaver (Illicit) and Will Catlett (Black Lightning) star in OWN’s new romantic drama Love Is__, from award-winning producers Mara Brock Akil (Girlfriends, Being Mary Jane, The Game) and Salim Akil (Black Lightning). According to a recent press release, the show is set primarily in 1990s Los Angeles against the backdrop of Black Hollywood. Love Is__ follows Nuri (Michele Weaver) and Yasir (Will Catlett), a couple from seemingly opposite worlds, as they chase their dreams and learn to follow their hearts.

'90s R&B

Told from the perspective of the couple’s present-day selves, the romantic drama also revisits the social issues and vibrant black culture of that time reflecting on how it all aligned to shape the couple they have become nearly 20 years later—a power couple navigating a complex set of social codes while also balancing successful careers and a beautiful family. Drawing inspiration from creators Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil’s own relationship journey, the series explores the highs, the lows, and the magic of falling (and staying) in love.

The OWN show made its debut on Tuesday at 10 p.m. ET. In case you missed the first episode, or the trailer that reeked of ’90s nostalgia, Brownstone’s “If You Love Me” led us back down memory lane.

Now it’s your turn. What R&B songs from that era would be on your playlist?

Beyoncé and Jay-Z Continue to Surprise on Joint Album Everything Is Love

Leave it to Beyoncé and Jay-Z to redefine what “pulling a Beyoncé” can be. Last Saturday, the pair headlined London Stadium as part of their joint On the Run II Tour, and at the end of their career-spanning set a message flashed on the screens: “ALBUM OUT NOW.” And there it was, on the home screen of the streaming platform Tidal (in which Jay-Z and Beyoncé have a controlling stake): Everything Is Love, credited to The Carters, an exquisitely produced happy ending to the cheating-heart narrative that unspooled on Beyoncé’s gravity-defying 2016 album Lemonade and Jay-Z’s terse yet personal 2017 release 4:44.

Rumors that this power couple would someday release a joint album have long been grist for pop’s mill, with Jay telling The New York Times last year that he and his wife had been using art “almost like a therapy session.” Everything was finished just a few hours before its splashy release, although its meticulous craft suggests otherwise. (“[Beyoncé and Jay-Z] don’t have rules,” producer Andre Lyon, who worked on the album as part of the production duo Cool & Dre, told Rolling Stone. “No one can get away with the things they do—and when I say get away with, I mean pull off.”) The album recalls other blockbuster duets in R&B and hip-hop—particularly Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell’s besotted soul sides, as well as Method Man and Mary J. Blige’s hip-hop-minded update of that pair’s 1968 smash “You’re All I Need to Get By”—as it plays with public perceptions of the duo’s relationship. Yet it incorporates too many of-the-moment elements to feel anything but timely: There are ad-libs from the Atlanta rap upstarts Migos, beats that take cues from the minimalist hip-hop subgenre trap, lyrical rebukes to the NFL and the Grammys, and cryptic references to other boldfaced names.

Everything opens with “Summer,” a lush ballad that sounds tailor-made for song-of-the-summer status. It also sets the thematic, if not musical, tone for the rest of the album: Beyoncé and Jay have weathered the storms of previous years and are ready to get back to the drunk-in-love business of beachside fun, shared plans, and knocking the rest of the world on their heels with their individual and combined success.

Over the course of Everything’s nine songs, the duo acknowledge bumps—subpoena-brandishing investigators, streaming services who don’t share the wealth, shady friends—while remaining resilient and focused, both on each other and on their art. Beyoncé’s swagger-filled rapping is as dead-serious as it is delightful: Her half-sung, half-rapped hook on “713” flaunts her mighty pipes and streetwise skills while throwing in some vocal processing that echoes the ’90s G-funk era; her demands for “respeck on my check” on “Apes–t” reframe the wage-gap issue in a radio-ready way; and her admonition of Spotify on the flinty, Pharrell-assisted “Nice” ends with a quote from the 1998 cult flick Half-Baked that’s as unprintable as it is cheer-inducing. Jay’s boasts are also in ample supply as he shouts out sellout crowds and big-ticket brands, although in a continuation of the openness he exhibited on 4:44, he pulls back the curtain on the couple’s origin story on “713” while also noting that life for black men in America is only made easier by black women.

Everything Is Love closes with “Black Effect” and “Lovehappy,” both of which return to the string-laden classic-soul sonics of the album’s opeer. The former examines America’s complex racial politics before making a simple declaration: “The Chitlin’ Circuit is stopped/ Now we in stadiums,” Jay declares, calling back to the path black musicians had to take during the era of racial segregation while flicking at how he and his wife have reached music’s highest echelons not just in their home country, but around the world. “Lovehappy,” a gorgeously plush ballad with sparkling synths and trilling strings, ends things on a hopeful note, the couples’ back-and-forth banter sounding like it was taken from the therapy sessions Jay mentioned (“Love is deeper than your pain and I believe you can change,” Beyoncé growls at one point) before bubbling over into a sighing “happy in love.”

Nearly two decades after their first meeting (the encounter Jay describes in “713” happened in 2000), Beyoncé and Jay-Z have ascended to celebrity’s highest heights by playing it close to the vest. They’re the masters of indulging the gossip-industrial complex’s hunger for “the real story” while also holding on tight to whatever the actual story might be. Everything Is Love’s melding of the personal and the imperial, the old-school and the next-wave, and the soulful and the stubborn give away the real story: Years later, The Carters still inspire each other to push harder and aim higher as they salute their love of each other, and of their art.

Nas Isn’t Upset with Jay-Z for Dropping ‘Everything Is Love’ the Day After His Album, Happy for ‘Black Excellence’

Jay-Z and Beyonce dropping their surprise album the day after Nas released his may have been shade on Jay’s part, but Nas sources say it’s all love on his.

via TMZ:

Sources close to Nas tell us the Queensbridge rapper isn’t fuming about “Everything Is Love” being released on Saturday, and doesn’t think the Carters will steal any thunder from his new album, “Nasir.” We’re told Nas fully appreciates the fact Jay and Bey are hip-hop royalty at this point, and actually really likes their new record.

If you don’t know, and you should, Nas and Jay had a huge feud going in the late ’90s and early 2000s. They went at each other in songs and interviews for years before burying the whole thing in 2005.

They’ve been friends ever since, and we’re told Nas is more interested in “black excellence” these days … rather than drama.

That’s a relief. We can’t handle any more rap feuds at this moment.

Love Island series 4 is only in its second week, and we’re already obsessed.

Why did Kendall have to be the first to go? Are Danni and Jack in it for the long haul? And, will Alex find love?

There are so many questions already, and we are deeply invested.

This week has been dominated however by the shock departure of one of the public’s top favourite Islanders, 23-year-old Niall Aslam, with his unexpected exit breaking the hearts of Love Island viewers, and his ‘rainbow fish’, Georgia.

‘Niall has left the villa for personal reason,’ ITV announced in a statement, something that fellow islander Alex later confirmed to the group.

‘For personal reasons unfortunately Niall can’t continue or come back to the villa,’ Alex announced to the islanders. ‘I’m obviously sad that Niall’s left the villa. We got on really, really well. He’s such a great guy. And I look forward to catching up with him and having some fun with him outside.’

While ITV is staying tight-lipped about the 23-year-old construction worker’s departure from the show, it has been reported by the Mirror Online, that the decision was down to health reasons, made jointly by Niall and the Love Island bosses.

Causing further concern, The Sun Online reported that Niall’s friends were unable to get hold of him after his departure, with one friend reportedly telling the publication, ‘We don’t know what’s gone on and we haven’t spoken to him so we’re in the dark.’

‘We are as shocked as everyone else is,’ another reportedly added. It’s a shame as he was doing really well and taking the show by storm.’

‘Obviously I was coupled up with him so obviously I came closer to him than most people in here,’ his Love Island other half Georgia explained of Niall after his exit. ‘But it wasn’t just that. He was actually my friend, my buddy.’

Niall has yet to speak out about his exit.

This couple did a chicken nugget-themed engagement shoot, because foodie love is the best love

A couple had a chicken nugget-themed engagement shoot. Full stop. We’ve seen a variety of *interesting* engagement photoshoots over the years. There’s the empowering kind (like the couple who did a body-positive boudoir shoot), the dreamy kind (the pair who took inspiration from Beauty and the Beast), and the plain bizarre (the T-Rex engagement shoot comes to mind). But what about the engagement photo shoots that leave you super hungry? Steph and Brett from Ontario, Canada posed for a McNuggets-themed photo shoot, and McDonald’s owes these two lovebirds a check (or at least a catered wedding reception).

According to the photographer Katie Marie, the couple literally asked her how they could “include chicken nuggets in [their] engagement shoot.” Katie shared the fast-food inspired photo shoot on her Instagram on June 1st, and we can’t stop lol’ing.

These photos are so goofy and sweet — and really, they used a four-pack of nuggets as a ring box. We wonder if Brett proposed like that? Down on one knee, holding a greasy to-go box, uttering the words, “Steph? Will you eat these chicken nuggets with marry me?”

Several things are clear from these photos. 1) We’re hungry. 2) Steph and Brett seem like a cool couple. 3) Katie is the kind-of wedding photographer we need more of in this world*.

*No offense to engagement photos of a couple standing in the woods gazing longingly at each other, but hiding an engagement ring inside a box of chicken nuggets is some A+ art direction.

Click through to see all the photos from this very silly chicken nugget engagement.

We love this one of the couple gazing longingly at a box of nuggets.

Well, the pilot episode of the new season just aired on ITV2 and the first set of couples have been locked in.

Now that we’re over all that Kem drama and have met the new Love Island 2018 contestants, we’re already invested in the drama.

Love Island 2018 Contestants

ITV

This year’s cast members include Dani Dyer, the daughter of EastEnders’ Danny Dyer, Dr. Alex George, West End performer Samira Mighty and others. There’s another former pop star called Eyal Booker in the line up and here’s hoping there’s another anticlimactic Marcel x Blazin’ Squad reveal on the show with the rest of the villa.

So, who shacked up with who in the first episode? Here’s the gossip…

Love Island 2018 Couples

Niall Aslam and Kendall Rae-Knight

love island 2018 couples

ITV

It was love (or something like it) at first sight for Niall, who was the first boy to be thrown into the lion’s den. Kendall clearly liked what she saw as she stepped forwards and didn’t budge from her choice.

Dr. Alex George and Samira Mighty

ITV

Things got a little awkward for poor Alex and Samira, as they had a pretty rough go of it this episode. To begin with, nobody stepped forwards for the doctor when he stepped out and he wound up choosing Laura (which didn’t last long). He and Samira were then paired together, as she was last on the bench.

Wes Nelson and Laura Anderson

love island 2018 couples

ITV

In the first tense moment of the season, Laura said goodbye to Alex and stepped forwards when Wes came into the picture. The bubbly blonde and kickboxer forced Alex back to the bench when Wes chose her.

Eyal Booker and Hayley Hughes

love island 2018 couples

ITV

It might have been his former pop idol status, but Eyal had the ladies seeing stars when he put his best foot forward. Three women – Dani, Samira and Hayley – all threw their hats in the ring, but it was Hayley who came out on top.

Jack Finchan and Dani Dyer

love island 2018 couples

ITV

Although Samira and Dani both stepped forwards for clean-cut Jack, it was Dani who eventually won him over. Who knows, maybe he’s a low key EastEnders fan?

And then there was Adam…

ITV

Adam Collard arrived at the end of the episode to shake things up a bit and had the boys quaking in their flip flops. The Newcastle-based personal trainer has 24 hours to decide which of the girls he’ll be sweeping off their feet (and away from another contestant), so you’ll have to stay tuned for tonight’s episode…

Who is Dr. Alex George? Love Island 2018 contestant and aspiring TV doctor

LOVE Island contestants will thankfully have a doctor present when emergency drama kicks off.

Last year, Dr Marcel was always on call and this time, Alex George is here to pick up the slack. Here’s all you need to know about this aspiring TV doctor…

Hunky Dr Alex George is hoping to enjoy some mouth-to-mouth action
ITV

Who is Alex George?

Dr. Alex George is an A&E doctor, currently working at the University Hospital Lewisham in south-east London.

The 27-year-old, who is originally from Carmarthen, Wales, studied medicine at Exeter University.

According to the Daily Mail, Alex was able to secure the eight-ten weeks required by working on a zero hours contract.

The controversial contracts mean their bosses are under no obligation to give them work and the hospital are powerless to stop employees from pursuing other projects.

Alex is hoping Love Island will help him become the next big TV doctor
ITV

What has Alex said about Love Island?

It was recently revealed Love Island contestants would face a strict new ban on drunken sex and nudity and Alex has promised to abide by them.

He says: “You’re recorded 24 hours a day and I just want to make sure that I behave in the right way.

I absolutely love my job, I’ve worked since the age of 13 to get here and I go to work every day and I genuinely enjoy it.”

If he finds fame on the show, Alex believes he will still return to his successful career: “I would probably go back and do it part time, if I could mix it with TV work I would.

He added: “I think there’s probably room for a new TV doctor!”

When does Love Island series four start on ITV2?

Love Island series four will start Monday, June 4, at 9pm.

The show will air over eight weeks and among the cast are Cabin Crew member Laura Anderson, Barmaid Dani Dyer, and model Eyal Booker.

Caroline Flack has presented Love Island since it returned to TV in 2015 and will once again be joined by voice-over artist Iain Stirling.

2017’s winner Kem Cetinay is also returning to host a daily spin-off show entitled The Morning After with TV presenter, Arielle Free.

Ashley Iaconetti And Jared Haibon Open Up About Their Very First ‘I Love You’ And It’s Incredibly Romantic!

The Bachelor couple is back together and happier than ever! As you may be aware, Ashley Iaconetti and Jared Haibon announced on her web series titled The Story of Us that they have rekindled their love.

The two met for the very first time on Bachelor in Paradise three years ago, and after some obstacles along the way, they now seem to be in it for the long run.

Ashley and Jared talked to ET earlier in the week, opening up about their amazing romance.

That being said, they shared the story of their first ‘I love you’ and also talked about moving in together and keeping the romance under wraps for months.

‘We knew that there was a lot of history with us and we really wanted to date and have a relaxed, easygoing relationship because we have never been boyfriend/girlfriend throughout our entire relationship,’ Jared stated.

Then they went on to explain how they knew they should get back together.

I love my boyfriend. 💜

A post shared by Ashley Iaconetti (@ashley_iaconetti) on

‘For me, it was love at first sight. I don’t know when in the last couple of months I decided [I wanted to be with him]. I always knew we had something I had never experienced before. We are similar and different in the most compatible ways. We really complement each other,’ Ashley stated.

Jared called her ‘the love of [his] life’ and proceeded to share how grateful he is for having Ashley in his life.

About six weeks into their rekindled relationship ‘He would even say ‘love of my life’ before he said ‘I’m in love with you,’’ Ashley dished.

Jared added: ‘I wanted to make sure. I wanted us to date for a while before we said those words to make sure this was real. And I wanted it to be important. We were in bed,  lying there. I could not wait anymore! We were talking throughout that entire [Stagecoach] weekend about how much we liked each other, and I was like, ‘I don’t like you, I love you! I was super nervous to say it. I was like, ‘I hope she says it back.’ I said, ‘I am completely obsessed with you, I am addicted to you.’’

These two are so sweet! We hope they’ll be together forever and will continue to feel the same way about each other!

8 of the Most Evil Animated Super Villains That We Love to Hate

When Incredibles 2 hits theaters later this month, the first family of Supers will face off against a new nemesis, The Screen Slaver, a villain who uses hypnotism to get people to do his bidding.

Only time will tell if the new bad guy will be evil enough to be added into the pantheon of great animated villains throughout history — a list that would frighten even the most incredible of the Incredibles. But while we wait, let’s celebrate some of the most wicked cartoon baddies that keep kids (and some adults) up at night.

Jafar from Aladdin

Jafar from 'Aladdin'
“I think it’s time to say goodbye to Prince Abubu.”

There were plenty of townspeople who had it out for Aladdin — though he always managed to stay one jump ahead of them — but the street rat met his match in the sultan’s evil advisor, Jafar. This guy’s negative qualities extend far behind his questionable facial hair. Throughout the Disney classic, Jafar attempts to overthrow the sultan, tries to force Princess Jasmine into marrying him, and plans to murder Aladdin. Oh, and all of that was phase one of his plan, with his sights really set on snagging the magic lamp in order to rule the entire universe.

Lord Farquaad from Shrek

Lord Farquaad from 'Shrek'

“Now really, it’s rude enough being alive when no one wants you, but showing up uninvited to a wedding?”

Nothing sounds as magical as a kingdom made up of beloved fairytale characters, but Lord Farquaad begs to differ. The tiny tyrant wants to get rid of all the fairytale folk in the land of Duloc and he’s willing to take part in some pretty dastardly deeds to do it. Take, for instance, the moment when he tortures the Gingerbread Man just to get intel on where the rest of his enemies are hiding. Ripping off Gingy’s beautiful gumdrop buttons before breaking his legs is simply sadistic.

Scar from The Lion King

Scar from 'The Lion King'

“This is exactly the way your father looked before he died.”

We can probably all agree that murdering your brother in order to become king is not great, but Scar took things a sinister step further by then convincing his nephew Simba that he was the one responsible for his father’s death. The lying lion proceeded to let his band of hyenas take over his new kingdom and it turned out his leadership skills are as horrible as his morals. When Simba came back to reclaim the throne, Scar tried to kill him, too. It’s hard to live those Hakuna Matata vibes when there’s a sinful supervillain trying to destroy everything around you.

Sid Phillips from Toy Story

Sid Phillips in 'Toy Story'

“What am I gonna blow? Man, hey, where’s that wimpy cowboy doll?”

Little boys and mischief go hand in hand, but Sid Phillips took things to the next level. The 10-year-old wasn’t interested in playing with his toys, so much as completely destroying them and rebuilding them in creepy hybrid form. But it’s not only his own toys he’s interested in. He also steals his sister’s and then proceeds to terrorize her with them. This kid even used a magnifying glass to attempt to make a beam of light from the sun burn a hole through Woody’s head. Hopefully his mother puts Sid into therapy before he truly self-destructs in his animated teenage years.

Ursula from The Little Mermaid

Ursula from 'The Little Mermaid'

“My dear, sweet child. That’s what I do. It’s what I live for — to help unfortunate merfolk, like yourself. Poor souls with no one else to turn to.”

Ariel may be the protagonist in The Little Mermaid, but it’s the evil Ursula who steals the show. With her voluptuous purple body and eight tentacles, not to mention the fact that she was based off legendary drag queen Divine, this sea witch is absolutely mesmerizing to watch. Unfortunately, she spends the whole film trying to ruin Ariel’s life in order to take the crown from her father, King Triton. Being bad has never looked as good as it does on this depraved diva.

The Joker from Batman: The Animated Series

The Joker from 'Batman the Animated Series'

“You just toddle on back to your mundane, meaningless little life, and when I need you, I’ll call. Fair? Good? Great! I’ll be in touch.”

While all the other animated villains on this list come from movies, there’s a TV villain that had to be included. The Joker is one of the most iconic comic book villains of all time, and each iteration of The Clown Prince of Crime provides a new reason as to why. The brilliant Batman: The Animated Series version from the ’90s is no exception, with Mr. J being voiced by the iconic Mark Hamill. Not only was the Joker intent on turning Gotham City into his own petrifying playground, but he takes great pleasure in every moment of torture he brings to others, including his faithful sidekick, Harley Quinn. That’s because not even a beautiful woman can take the Joker’s eyes off the prize — causing chaos everywhere he goes.

Cruella De Vil from 101 Dalmations

Cruella De Vil from '101 Dalmations'

“My only true love, darling. I live for furs. I worship furs! After all, is there a woman in all this wretched world who doesn’t?”

You don’t have to be a dog lover to know that an obsession with scalping puppies for fur is sick and twisted. But for Cruella De Vil, it’s not just a horrible hobby but an entire way of life. Her name alone contains the words “cruel,” “devil,” and “evil,” but it doesn’t need to be spelled out for us to prove that this woman is wicked to the core. And aside from a penchant for puppy murders, she just barges into people’s homes whenever she pleases, and that is just downright rude.

Oogie Boogie from A Nightmare Before Christmas

Oogie Boogie from 'A Nightmare Before Christmas'

“Mister Oogie Boogie says there’s trouble close at hand. You’d better pay attention now, cause I’m the Boogie Man.”

It would be hard to go through life as a stuffed burlap sack filled with bugs, but that’s no reason to try eating Santa Claus. Oogie Boogie, however, takes great pleasure in putting fear into the hearts of everyone around him. His true passion is gambling, but that also happens to include gambling with the lives of anyone he meets. He has his henchmen bring unsuspecting characters back to his lair in order to torture them before adding them to his Snake and Spider Stew. And that is simply no way to spend the holidays.

Frances Bean Cobain’s Ex Sues Courtney Love for Attempted Murder Over Kurt Cobain Guitar

Frances Bean Cobain ex-husband, Isaiah Silva, is suing her mother, Courtney Love, claiming she had people “attempt to murder” him to get back the late Kurt Cobain’s guitar, according to court documents obtained by Us Weekly.

Silva, who was married to Frances from 2014 until their divorce was finalized last year, filed the suit against Love on May 25 for an alleged accident from June 2016. He claims in the documents that Britney Spearscontroversial ex-manager Sam Lutfi and two other men “did burglarize, rob, assault, batter, sexually batter, kidnap, and attempt to murder [him]” at his West Hollywood home.

“The primary objective of their conspiracy was to locate and take possession of a guitar believed to be worth millions of dollars, which was gifted to Silva, by [Frances], on January 8, 2014, six months prior to their June 29, 2014 marriage,” the documents allege.

TMZ reported earlier this month that the former couple’s divorce was finally settled, six months after it was finalized, and one of the conditions of the settlement was Kurt’s Martin guitar, which he played during an MTV Unplugged performance in November 1993, months before his death by suicide in April 1994.

Silva also makes other accusations in the lawsuit, including claims that the three men who allegedly attacked him also attacked his mother. He also alleges that Lutfi delivered “narcotics and illicit benzodiazepines” to Frances.

“The narcotics and illicit benzodiazepine were hidden to ensure Silva was unaware of the secret drug-related business relationship between Lutfi and [Frances],” the documents read.

Frances is the only child of Love and Kurt, who were married from 1992 until the Nirvana rocker’s death in 1994.

A “We love well-behaved children” sign gave me all the bad feels

by

Becky Vieira

posted in Life

I was in line at the counter, just about to order when I saw it. I went through a cycle of emotions in the few seconds it took to read it. Shock. Anger. Sadness. And then fear. Yes, fear. What was I afraid of, really? That my child would act like… a child?

It was a sign. Five words printed on an 8×10 piece of paper. Framed and hanging on the wall of a pizza parlor.

“We love well-behaved children.”

Well-behaved children in restaurant sign

I forgot my order. Mumbled the first thing I read when I looked back at the menu. Then turned to my son. My sweet son, who was teething and hungry. I was actually fearful he’d soon become one of the ill-behaved children that the sign was passive-aggressively warning me about.

I think I felt threatened. There were four men at and around the counter and nearby pizza oven. I was alone with my child. No, I didn’t fear for my safety. Rather, I somehow reverted to a little girl who’s afraid of getting into trouble.

I didn’t know if I should turn and leave. Jump the counter in a single leap and start a fight (kidding). Or flip them the proverbial bird in my mind and stay for lunch. Like my son and I had every right to do, no matter how he behaved.

I chose the latter. We stayed. Ate our pizza. He was actually quite well-behaved and surprisingly neat.

Of course I think my child’s perfect. He’s my child. I’m also aware that the rest of the world doesn’t share my attitude, nor do they need to. Some people aren’t kid people. I can respect that.

Toddler eating corn on the cob while sitting in restaurant high chair

However, babies and children are part of our society. That’s not going to change. Ever. And these tiny humans deserve to be out in public with the rest of us.

Yes, I understand the frustration it can cause. I don’t think anyone enjoys when a child screams incessantly. But it happens. Once upon a time, before I became a mother, I recall being irritated by a howl in my ear when all I wanted was to eat in peace. But I always understood.

If you want a controlled environment, complete with peace and quiet, go to a library. Or stay home. The rest of the world is bustling with noise. Laughter, tears, arguments and yes, even children.

As a parent, I do my best to keep my child from running amok in public. Or screaming inside restaurants and stores. We work to teach him the difference between inside and outside voices. And continue taking him out so that he’ll learn how to behave in public.

Mother cleans the restaurant floor after her toddler eats

My husband and I also get on our hands and knees to clean up the floor beneath him before we leave. Is he a perfectly behaved child? No. But that’s okay. He’s 20 months-old. Even Prince George and Princess Charlotte have been known to act like a “typical kid” or throw a public tantrum.

Also, we don’t let him yell and throw things while we ignore him. We behave like responsible parents. I’m not quite sure how that fits in with this sign’s message. Maybe it needs an addendum at the bottom: “Parents who address screaming and food throwing are exempt from judgement.”

I never hesitate to bring my son along with me most anywhere I go. I also seek out kid-friendly establishments when possible. In fact, this restaurant was overrun with kids from a nearby high school, one who actually had his feet up on a table. Maybe he didn’t read the sign.

Does hanging that sign mean the restaurant simply assumed kids aren’t well-behaved? No benefit of the doubt. Young equals bad… without the proper warning of a sign.

It was off-putting and I won’t be back because of it. On the other hand, when I relayed the story to my husband he had a different opinion. He pointed out that not all parents make the effort to keep their kids from wreaking havoc in public. He saw the sign as more of a reminder versus a threat.

I like his optimism. But I still don’t like that sign.

Have you ever seen a similar sign? How did you react?

Cannabis tourism in California – a women’s wellness retreat with puff love

At the Ganja Goddess Getaway, yes, there are yoga classes and spiritual talks but the mother lode comes from the spliffs, edibles and pot-infused mocktails that aid the healing

Wearing a T-shirt with the slogan “Mary Jane Smokewear”, a woman with long, grey pigtails crawled towards me, offering a hit off a balloon bag inflated with marijuana vapours. I was sitting cross-legged under a Ganja Goddess Getaway-branded gazebo on a perfect California afternoon and it was the umpteenth time that day that a stranger had come over, unprompted, to share their weed.

The bag was just one way my fellow ganja goddesses were getting high. Plates piled with spliffs, giant blunts, laced caramel-pecan candies and fruity mocktails enhanced with pot-infused tinctures also made the rounds. At one point, I was handed a wizard pipe packed with a “tiramisu”. Where a domestic goddess might use cream and ladyfingers, a ganja goddess gets “baking” with alternating layers of green and hash.

Tokyo’s Coolest Boutique Is Hidden Behind a Love Hotel

TOKYO — Shinjuku red light district Kabukicho has not historically been at the crossroads of high fashion.
That reputation is now being tested. Located behind a love hotel is select shop The Four Eyed, which has set Charles Jeffrey, Y/Project and Martine Rose upon an area regarded for its swarm of hostess clubs and Yakuza enclaves.
Former Fruits magazine photographer Keisuke Fujita opened the boutique in 2016 with the aim to energize Tokyo’s fashion scene. Fujita and shop creative director Maiko Shibukawa hope to push the city’s aesthetic needle past its “stale” cutesy reputation and toward a new, thoughtful era.
“There are no places like this in the area — it’s kind of a weird location, but that’s what is good about it,” Shibukawa said. “We are really anti-kawaii [cute] style, we didn’t want to become one of the Harajuku stores. It’s one of our challenges — to change Tokyo’s mainstream fashion. It has always been about kawaii for the last 20 years of Tokyo fashion.”
Kabukicho’s cheap rents enable Shibukawa to select eclectic merchandise that is not particularly driven by sales. “I pick what I like,” she said. Shoppers can find a hodgepodge of vintage shoes, zines, Mauricio Stein sunglasses and Mimi Wade T-shirts

“We fell in love with the people, the environment, the whole way of life. We realized how grateful we are for the necessities that we have and we wanted to find a way to bring those basic resources to others,” said Hough.
She recalled interviewing Patrickson for the stylist job years ago. “One thing that made me want to work with her was her values and her viewpoint on fashion and that she doesn’t want to be wasteful. She is

Stevie Wonder Planning A ‘Peace And Love’ Tour

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Stevie Wonder discussed politics, talked pop culture and poked fun at his eyesight — sometimes all at once — between playing his hits at a tiny West Hollywood club in preparation for a series of shows.

“So Donald!” Wonder yelled at one point during a set at the Peppermint Club that ran into the early hours Thursday.

He made sure the crowd knew he didn’t mean Donald Trump.

“Donald Glover! I saw your last video!” Wonder said to big laughs. He had to acknowledge that Glover, who sat in the back of the room alongside actress Angela Basset and grooved to Wonder songs such as “My Cherie Amour” and “Living for the City,” has been all the buzz since the premiere of his satirically violent and political video “This is America.”

“I got some songs on the next project, I think it would be great for us to collaborate, and do some visuals,” he told Glover, an actor whose hip-hop moniker is Childish Gambino. “In a time when the world seems so asleep, it’s great to know when people are woke.”

Glover later joined him on stage for an encore featuring “Superstition,” with help from Jessie J, Kelly Rowland, Luke Kelly and Shelea.

The 68-year-old Wonder had summoned fellow musicians, friends, fans and a handful of reporters to the club for a special announcement, saying he plans to play a series of shows in the coming months to celebrate life, love and music and push back against troubled times.

“So much is going on in the world. And there is too much confusion,” Wonder said. “The one thing we know for sure that we can celebrate is our life, our love and our music… The positive will win in the end.”

He gave no specifics on the shows other than saying Las Vegas will be in the mix. He went on to say he hopes to have his long-in-the-works album “Through The Eyes of Wonder” done before the end of the year.

Yet his unique set felt like the real point of the evening, as Wonder led his five-piece band through “Higher Ground,” ”Signed, Sealed, Delivered” and “Overjoyed.”

After “Superstition,” Wonder led Glover and the others in a messy rendition of “Do You Love Me?” in honor of his 88-year-old mentor and Motown founder Berry Gordy, who wrote the 1962 hit for the Contours and sat in the booth nearest the stage for most of the night.

Wonder laughed as he struggled to remember the song as he went along, admitting in the middle, “I never played this live before!”

The Top 5 Shoe Brands Celebrities Love

Erlanger is also the official ARMI Captain at the luxury rental and styling platform Armarium. From the best places to source vintage to the secret to finding your most flattering jeans, come back each week for a professional’s perspective.

Working with many high-profile clients throughout my tenure as a stylist, I am constantly asked for brand recommendations. Although the preferences of my celebrity clients are constantly changing due to new brands and trends, there are a few brands that are preferred by my clients without exception. Today, I’m sharing some of my celebrity clients’ favorite brands when it comes to an item that is essential for every look: shoes.

I find that when I’m styling celebrities, shoes can make or break a look, so it’s always a top priority for me that my clients feel confident in the shoes I pull for them. With my different clients, tailoring the shoes to their personal style is obviously extremely important, but another element that’s important to consider is comfort. Comfort is essential because often celebrities go to events where they’ll be standing for hours on end, and in those situations, comfort is fundamental in a successful look. That’s why I find that the brands my clients are always requesting combine comfort and style for a standout look. From my experience, I find that the brands that always come highly recommend are Paul Andrew, Jimmy Choo, Christian Louboutin, Gianvito Rossi, and Schutz. These brands are always updated with the latest footwear trends, as well as including classic elements and giving my clients the comfort they desire.

Lean On Pete shows us there is love and care in the world — if we go looking for it

THIS is not Seabiscuit. Fundamentally yes, there is a boy and a horse, but that’s where the similarity ends.

Brit filmmaker Andrew Haigh’s road movie about Charley, a boy who seemingly can’t catch a break.

Except for the boy and the horse, Lean On Pete is nothing like Seabiscuit
Lean On Pete is a film about Charley, a boy who seemingly cannot catch a break

Starting off in a new town with his dad, earning a few dollars here and there helping a belligerent horse owner (Buscemi), the pair of them scrape by until forces intervene and send the 15 year old on the road with his favourite horse (Lean on Pete) on the hunt for a long-lost Aunt.

It’s a slightly meandering journey (figuratively and literally) about searching for our place in the world and trying to eke some hope out of desperation.

On his travels Charley learns that while life is as tough as old boots, there is love and care out there if you go looking for it.

Deliciously slow and beautifully made, it’s Charlie Plummer in the lead role that really hits a home run and one to really watch out for (If it wasn’t for #spaceygate he’d have been the talking point of 2017’s ‘All the money in the world’).

Steve Buscemi plays a belligerent horse owner

Falling in love when you have autism: ‘It’s like being on the same first date for 20 years’

Growing up with undiagnosed autism, Laura James had no idea how to handle love, until she met and married her neurotypical partner, Tim.

autism
Laura James at 25, when her autism was still undiagnosed

There are 700,000 people in the UK living on the autism spectrum, according to the National Autistic Society, but as many as 42 per cent of women with autism spend decades of their lives struggling to get a diagnosis. Here, Laura James, now 47 and author of Odd Girl Out (Bluebird, £8.99) explains how it feels to love, date and marry when you have autism without realising it.

‘I struggle to name and understand my emotions, so from early on in life, I have always split them into two categories: There are the good ones that are pink and soft. Then there are the bad ones, which are sludgy green, and feel jagged and dangerous. Love is confusing as it often comes with both these feelings.

Like many teenage girls I was obsessed with love. From 15, I was enchanted by a boy who lived a few streets away and who seemed only intermittently to notice me. He had everything I thought a boy should have: Irish roots, blue eyes and a detachment that acted like catnip to my teen self.

I would spend hours getting ready to “casually” bump into him at the coffee shop where he worked or at various gigs I knew he’d go to. We’d often go back to his parents’ house, where we lay on his bed listening to Bob Dylan. We were together but not together, almost pretending the other wasn’t there. We were friends, but it was unlike any other friendship I had. It always hovered on the edge of being more, but had it have gone any further I would have bolted.

“My undiagnosed autism had informed this seven-year crush”

It turned into a seven-year crush and, looking back, I can see it was informed by my then-undiagnosed autism. Other girls would have flirted fiercely or got bored and moved on to another boy. In retrospect, I think I liked the security of this pseudo relationship, where I could project my romantic fantasies on to someone without having to deal with the confusing mess that is the reality of many true relationships.

I (like many other women and girls with autism I have spoken to) found teenage dating and romantic entanglements difficult to fathom. We can lack social imagination and there seemed to be so many unwritten rules. If you liked someone, you were meant to pretend that you didn’t. It was all so confusing.

autism

Author Laura James, aged 25, when her autism remained undiagnosed

Many people with autism have intense interests and sometimes these can be focused on individuals. An autistic special interest can be all-consuming. Mine are usually relatively benign subjects, such as politics or fashion, but during the time I focused on this boy, he was literally all I could think about. If he had tried to kiss me though, I would have run a mile. Autistic girls often grow up more slowly than their neurotypical counterparts, and I simply wasn’t emotionally ready to have a relationship.

It’s often said that one of the main autistic emotions is fear and meeting someone new and knowing it could turn into a relationship is a terrifying concept for me. I would wait by the phone longing for it to ring and then, as soon as it did, I would be too scared to answer in case it was the object of my affection so I would just leave it ringing.

I felt this same sense of yearning and fear when I met my husband, Tim, ten years later. It was in rehab, a cold, bleak, scary place where I clung to the idea of him as if he were a life raft. He was suffering a vicious bout of depression. I had been admitted for a prescription drug addiction resulting from a misdiagnosis, something worryingly common for women with autism.

My husband says: “Its like being on the same first date for the past 20 years”

The stereotypes for autism are so strong and so based on the male model that medical professionals often fail to spot it in women, instead misdiagnosing them with mental health conditions such as Bipolar Disorder or Borderline Personality Disorder. If they are unlucky enough also to have physical health issues, such as Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (a connective tissue disorder, often seen in autistic women), they risk being written off as hypochondriacs or, in extreme cases, told they have Munchausen syndrome. I was misdiagnosed with Hyperventilation Syndrome and prescribed tranqulisers. That is one route to addiction, another is the alcohol and drugs that some autistic women use to ease social anxiety.

There is a forced intimacy in the cocoon of a psychiatric hospital, a soothing rhythm to the day and – somewhere between group therapy and a 12 steps meeting – I fell in love. I knew the feelings were different to what other people experienced. But again I was gripped by longing and terror.

I would wait for hours in the patients’ kitchen, hoping to get a glimpse of Tim, and then feel sick with fear as soon as I saw him. I would have imaginary conversations in my head, but struggle to engage with him when he was right there in front of me. The reality simply didn’t match the experiences of the heroines in the Jilly Cooper and Marian Keyes books I voraciously devoured at the time.

Somehow it worked and we dated and eventually married, although even today ours is a different kind of relationship. Tim has said it is like “being on the same first date for the past 20 years”. It is, he explains, the strange dichotomy of my need for structure and sameness and his failure ever to quite get into my head.

autism

Laura James with her husband, Tim

I like to live in what Tim calls “the grey”. It’s where I feel neutral. Any extremes of emotion leave me feeling de-stabilised. Falling in love can be full of highs and lows, and early on it left me exhausted and out of sorts. I knew, though, that my relationship with Tim was worth pursuing. It was initially uncomfortable, but because we got on so well, had so many shared interests and because he was funny and clever and unlike anyone else I had ever met, we somehow just got each other. Eventually, at least.

Unaware of my autism and completely different to me in terms of personality, Tim was loud and excitable and constantly lusting after adventure. While I craved the neutral, he wanted excitement and volatility. It shouldn’t have worked as a relationship. We are opposites. He is driven by emotion and is fiery, passionate, creative. I need life to be lived at one volume. He thrives on the kind of peaks and troughs that leave me longing for a dark room.

“We are married and very happily so, but not in the traditional sense”

I once suggested going to Devon for a weekend and within 10 minutes Tim had gone from researching B&Bs in Salcombe to looking at trips to the Arctic Circle and trying to persuade me to take three weeks off work for “the trip of a lifetime”. He needs newness constantly and cannot much see the point in going to the same place twice. I love sameness and will always try to sit at the same table and order the same dish in the same restaurant.

The turning point came with a startling realisation: we don’t argue. Ever. Early on in our marriage I was terrified of any sign of anger on his part. Even mild irritation left me quaking. I would shut down and not respond. In the end, we found a way to be and we haven’t had a cross word for more than a decade.

Years ago, Tim would snap over something small and I would retreat upstairs and not come down until I knew he had either gone out or had calmed down. I simply didn’t engage. Now he no longer even considers getting cross; he knows nothing will come of it. Problems are discussed calmly and solutions negotiated. Anything else seems bizarre to me. Why would anyone want to scream and shout at the person they love?

Happily ever after: Laura James today

We are married and very happily so, but not in the traditional sense. We rarely go out with other couples. Instead, we spend time at home, together but separate. He makes music while I immerse myself in whatever special interest is enchanting my brain at any given time. I make no demands on him and bristle when he presses me to do something. But it works. There is a kindness in our relationship that is rare and precious.

A few weeks ago, we went shopping together for a sofa for our new house. Overwhelmed by the sensory overload of John Lewis on a busy Saturday afternoon, I turned to Tim and said, “please make it stop”. He knew what I meant. “I know,” he joked, “it’s awful – it’s just like being married.”

6 Anime To Watch If You Love ‘Voltron: Legendary Defender’

Voltron: Legendary Defender tells the story of a group of young Paladins who come together to fight for the greater good. It’s not just the characters and storylines that have garnered its increasing fan base, the show’s close ties to Japanese anime has also opened its viewers up to the world of this medium. So if Voltron: Legendary Defender has piqued your interest in anime, here are six shows you should watch.

Space Dandy

  • Best for: Fans of Voltron‘s sarcastic slapstick humor, space travel, and Lance
  • Where to watch: Hulu, Netflix (UK)

Space Dandy is one of those shows where you will either find it completely insane and love it, or it makes perfect sense and you will still love it. The show follows the adventures of Dandy, a handsome space explorer who travels across the universe to find new alien life forms. Like Voltron, it is set in the vast expanse of space, and even though both shows aren’t similar in terms of story, it has the same sarcastic slapstick humor as Voltron. Even Dandy himself is a lover-boy character (think Lance but with a unique haircut).

The show has a vibrant and wild animation, leaving you in your seat wondering where the insanity will take you. One moment you might be looking at a bizarre alien and the next you might be thrown into some rainbow light show.

Gurren Lagann

  • Best for: Those who love Voltron’s fight scenes and stories about war
  • Where to watch: Hulu, Netflix

Does using a robot to fight an army sound familiar? Well, that’s just what Gurren Lagann is about. Like Voltron, it takes a similar approach of a story revolving around a rebellion, using giant Gunman as weapons in the fight. The anime follows the struggle of Simon and Kamina as they fight against the Spiral King in hopes to reclaim their home on the surface.

What makes this show particularly fun to watch is the relationship between characters as you watch the trials they face and overcome, much like the Voltron Paladins. The show also makes you emotional when the characters fight against their enemy, making you want to cheer on them like when Voltron fights the Galra Forces.

My Hero Academia

  • Best for: Fans of superheroes and Voltron‘s comedy
  • Where to watch: Funimation, Hulu, Crunchyroll

In the same way that the Voltron Paladins rose to their roles, My Hero Academia also tells a similar heroic story. The anime series follows the story of Izuku Midoriya, a powerless underdog who is given the abilities of one of his heroes. Throughout the anime, which is now in its third season, Midoriya discovers the struggles of being a hero.

As you watch the anime deal with themes of heroism and finding inner strength, you’ll find yourself laughing to the point of tears with its wacky and random comedy. What makes My Hero Academia particularly special, however, is how it’s all animated with a blend of a typical yet quirky anime and manga style. If heroics is what sold you on Voltron, then this show is for you.

Kill la Kill

  • Best for: Fans of Voltron’s fun attitude and interactions between characters
  • Where to watch: Hulu, Netflix

Aside from the serious topics that Voltron deals with, it still doesn’t always take itself too seriously, especially in the interactions between characters. Kill la Kill is the same but heightened to an extreme level. The anime follows Ryūko Matoi, a student with half a scissor-shaped sword, and her quest to locate the other half to solve her father’s death.

While depicting deep issues, Kill la Kill can go from super serious to completely weird in seconds. But the anime’s main selling point is its explosive animation and its fast-paced fight sequences that only adds to its unique style.

Avatar: The Last Airbender

  • Best for: Fans of Voltron‘s mature themes, Keith, and intense fight scenes
  • Where to watch: Amazon Prime Video

Avatar: The Last Airbender isn’t Japanese but can arguably be called anime. The Nickelodeon series explores similar issues that Voltron deals with, including war and oppression. What puts this show in a league of its own is how it takes everything a step further and explores more mature themes of genocide and personal loss.

The story revolves around a young boy named Aang, an Airbender who must fulfill his destiny as the ‘Avatar’ to bring peace to a war-torn world. You’ll go through the ups and downs of all the diverse characters and fall in love with their personalities (if you’re a fan of Voltron’s Keith, then you’ll love Avatar’s Zuko).

It’s not just the characters that make this a good show; it’s also the show’s fight sequences. Each fast-paced and intense fight scene keeps you on the edge of your seat, so if you like an emotional but heartfelt story mixed with funny moments, this is a must-watch show.

RWBY

  • Best for: Fans of Voltron‘s characters, slapstick comedy, and justice stories
  • Where to watch: Amazon Prime Video, Crunchyroll, Youtube

RWBY is another show that has its origins in the US, but we’ll still count it as anime. Similar to Voltron, the series deals with conflict between groups that leads to an all-out war. The story follows a group of girls attending a school that teaches them how to fight monsters called Grimm, to protect their home.

Like Voltron, each of the characters are individuals who provide the same kind of zany, slapstick comedy. Each character is wild and wonderful and they all have deep backstories which makes them well-rounded and fascinating to watch.

What gives RWBY its edge, however, is its animation. It’s so artistic that it’s in a league of its own. This artistic style isn’t just apparent with its characters, but also within its intense fight sequences. The show is colorful, bold, and it keeps getting better as the show progresses. If Voltron’s ‘fighting for the greater good’ is your obsession, you’ll certainly like RWBY.

Angling for calm: why I love wild fishing

The opportunity to be in the moment and still in nature hooked Annalisa Barbieri on fishing – never more so than in the wildernesses of Dartmoor and the Highlands of Scotland

I am not a natural stander-stiller. In life, when not hiding behind the page, I fidget and think hurried, jumbled thoughts.

Few things still me and keep me in the moment. Fishing, when I discovered it 20 years ago, was one. Not in the beginning, of course. There was too much to remember and master: knots, kit, casting. But then, when it all came together and I was able to select my fly, tie, snip and cast, my world both reduced and grew.

These books will make you fall in love with traveling

Sometimes we have that itch to do something crazy, to just up and leave and go somewhere. But who can do that? We all have responsibilities, we are all tied down by something or someone. So what is the next best thing? Maybe reading some of the world’s most famous travelogues. Your friends may be happy that you are sitting at home reading instead of leaving them, but maybe these books will inspire you to get up and go see whats out there.

                                  In Patagonia

This book was written by Bruce Chatwin, a reporter for the British magazine The Sunday Times. He had always wanted to go to Patagonia in Argentina as a child due to some mysterious artifacts a relative brought home as a child, but had always put off the trip. One day, while he was in Paris, he was interviewing a woman who had a giant map of Patagonia on the wall. After saying he had always wanted to go there, the woman said “me too. Go for me.”

He then up and left and spent six months traveling around the enormous region, interviewing anyone and everyone he ran into. This book was written by him and details his incredible travels.

                                  Travels with Charley

John Steinbeck wrote this epic travelogue near the end of his life. He had been writing Americana fiction and about Americans for most of his career, but by the time he was 58 he had already been living in europe for almost 20 years, and had been living in New York City for even longer. He felt New York was a bubble separated from the rest of the country, and he decided to see the US for himself.

So he took his dog, bought a camper, and went on a 10,000 mile road trip across all of the United States. This book details how he re-discovered America and how he got back in touch with the American people.

                                  Arabian Sands

This travelogue was written in 1959 by a British officer who was responsible for researching how to get rid of locusts in the Arabian desert. The officer, named Wilfred Thesiger, travelled around Ethiopia and Sudan as well as going all around the Arabian Peninsula.

One of the most impressive parts of the book is when he becomes one of the first ever westerners to go through the empty quarter of the Arabian desert – an area with no life or water whatsoever. This book will definitely make you want to learn more about the Middle East.

                                  The Broken Road

Set in the 1930’s before World War Two and the Cold War, this amazing travelogue details British traveller and author Patrick Leigh Fermor as he travels across Europe. However, it isn’t just the fact that he went all the way across Europe, but how he did it which is incredible.
Starting in Hook of Holland in The Netherlands, Fermor walked, on foot, all the way across Europe to what is now known as Istanbul in Turkey. He travelled through nearly every country on the continent, crossed almost all of the major rivers there, and saw and met extremely interesting people. In fact, there are people today who try to recreate his journey.

Dean Unglert Shares Cryptic Message About Love After Lesley Murphy Split

Dean Unglert is doing some serious reflecting. The Bachelor Winter Games star wrote a cryptic Instagram post on Saturday, April 7, one day after the news broke that he had reportedly split from Bachelor alum Lesley Murphy.

Unglert, 26, and Murphy, 30, called it quits after four months together due to the distance between them, E! News reported. While the pair has not yet confirmed the news, The Bachelorette vet did hint at it on social media.

“Growing up as a kid I had a crude but utopian idea of what love is. I always had this idea that no matter what you did, no matter how you act, as long as you’re true to yourself and act in good conscious, your path would lead you to the one person on this planet you’re meant to be with,” Unglert captioned the photo of himself. “As I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned that although everyone DESERVES love, it’s not something we’re entitled to. Love takes work. Love is compromise. Love is earned. I still have a lot of work to do on myself, a lot to prove to myself, before I’m ready for something like that.”

Unglert started his TV journey for love during Rachel Lindsay’s season of The Bachelorette then went on to Bachelor in Paradise where he found himself in a love triangle with Danielle Lombard and Kristina Schulman. However, he appeared to find real love during The Bachelor: Winter Games. Following the season, Unglert gave Murphy a key to his place.

Love Wawa? The Company’s Filling 5,000 Positions in Its Spring Hiring Event

Like George Harrison said, I don’t need no “Wah-Wah”.

But I do need Wawa coffee.

If you think you can put up with hearing that joke a couple times a day, you could snag one of the 5,000 Wawa jobs the cult-fave gas station/convenience store chain is looking to fill during its annual spring hiring campaign.

These Wawa jobs range from customer service to management, according to the company’s press release.

Wawa operates more than 790 stores across six states: Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and Florida.

The company says every store will have job opportunities posted over the next three months, but some stores have been hosting open house-style Wawa Career Wednesdays, which started on March 28 and continue through April 18. Stores that are hosting the events will have signage posted outside, the company notes.

Besides being known for its made-to-order hoagies, Wawa has a reputation for offering its employees competitive wages and benefits like health insurance and a 401(k).

The Huffington Post rounds up 18 online vintage clothing stores where you can shop for retro-inspired items that are on trend again in 2018.

Racked reports that within the last decade more and more reproduction boutiques — stores that reproduce items from the post-war time period, some even using original patterns and fabrics — have been popping up.

Vintage Insta-stores, vintage shops selling their wares on Instagram only, are also on the rise.

‘RHOA’ Star Sheree Whitfield Will Have To Wait Longer For Prison Love

                                  Sheree Whitfield

In the most recent episode of Real Housewives Of Atlanta, Sheree Whitfield couldn’t stop talking about her prison love Tyrone Gilliams and how he would be released in a few short months so that they can be together.

However, Radar Online reports the New York Federal courts have declined Gilliams’ request to be released early. In 2013, 51-year-old Gilliams’ was sentenced to 120 months in prison for securities and fraud charges in an attempt to steal $ 5 million from investors.

In 2016, he challenged his sentence only to be denied with the next consideration for release in January 2018. The documents filed by Gilliams’ states that he was not the one in charge of the fraud scheme, the government did not give over all evidence in the first place and that his counsel was no good.

He even asked to be released on bail, “during the pendency of federal habeas corpus proceedings.” However, U.S. District Judge Deborah A. Batts denied it on March 20 saying that there wasn’t any new evidence.

Whitfield will have to wait until November 14, 2022, to have Gilliams to herself. he’s being held at a prison in Yazoo City, Missouri which is about 6 hours away from where Whitfield is in Atlanta.

Your Kids — and the Spring Birds — Will Love This Free Home Depot Workshop

Looking for a springtime project for the kids to create that won’t have you spending a bunch of money at your local craft store?

Well, The Home Depot has you covered.

The home improvement retailer will host a free kids’ workshop on April 7 where participants can build their own window birdhouses.

These little habitats for the birds in your backyard attach to windows with small suction cups. One side is made of a clear plastic pane so your kiddos can observe their feathered friends inside.

Adult supervision is required for this hands-on craft. Though the directions for construction indicate this project is not suited for children under 4 years old, younger kids may enjoy painting and putting stickers on the completed project at the in-store session.

In addition to getting to bring home their DIY birdhouse, participants can also score a free workshop apron, commemorative pin and certificate of achievement (while supplies last).

Although there is no fee, The Home Depot is asking participants to register online in advance. Sign up at your nearest store here. The workshop will take place from 9 a.m. to noon.

If building birdhouses doesn’t interest your little ones, keep checking The Home Depot’s kids workshops site for future events. They’re held monthly at stores across the country.

The home-improvement store also regularly hosts free workshops for adults to learn skills for future projects. Check your local store for details on upcoming events.

Kate Hudson DOESN’T own the love fern from ‘How To Loose A Guy In 10 Days’ any more…

…and many other lessons our Fashion and Celebrity Director, Josh Newis-Smith learnt from the ultimate girl crush – AND we do not use that term lightly!

Kate Hudson is the ultimate girl’s girl, or anyone’s girl for that matter. We kick start our interview by fan girling about Alicia Vikander, namely because I am dressed in a look inspired by the Oscar winner we christened, cowboy waiter, “god, she’s just so beautiful isn’t she,” Kate exclaims.

Reclining in the Covent Garden Hotel, just like her floor length red stripped Stella McCartney dress, Kate is a like a breath of fresh spring sunshine. With her blonde locks cut into the perfect pixie Kate is engaging as she is warm – the kinda gal you want to take to Soho immediately, do twenty shots with and talk to about EVERYTHING until the end of time.

Like many people who learnt much about love from early noughties rom-coms, my obsession started long before this rendezvous whilst watching her alongside Matthew McConaughey in How To Loose A Guy In 10 Days. It was also the movie where I realized I was 110 percent a certified homosexual, given Mr. M’s banging bod – just in case you needed or wanted to know.

The Your So Vein scene will go down in history as will THAT golden bias cut dress, but the Love Fern is no longer, “I definitely don’t still own the Love Fern,” Hudson woefully reminisces. We are here to help with your mourning process dear readers and can point you in the direction of some suitable support groups!

It isn’t all lolz a minute creating such iconic movies though, “It was so fun filming that movie – but all comedies are fun! Actually, funnily enough because they are so fun to watch people don’t realize how challenging they are to make. Imagine doing those same scenes over and over again whilst trying to maintain spontaneity and timing. It’s actually very draining because at the end of a twelve hour day you are exhausted and mentally drained.”

Just like a jolly good work out session then? “Yes! When I am doing dramatic work I feel like I have had the greatest therapy session of my life. I feel elated, I want to go out – I’ve been crying all day and I have got something off my chest.”

Hudson has long been one seriously over active actress and sits before me as quite the super hyphenate having set up her athelesiure wear line, Fabletics in 2013. But it’s still the exercise under the watchful eye of training supremos, Nicole Winhoffer that teaches her the most about herself, “working out has really taught me that I get the best results when I am not trying so hard. When I am too obsessive about reaching a certain goal I actually hold on to more emotions, more so than when I enjoy myself and let go.”

But come on hun, surely there are times you really can’t be assed to drag yourself out of bed and into that gym? “You know what my motivational motivational mantra varies from day to day,” Kate shares. “Some days nothing – there is no motivation needed. Now I have my company its an all encompassing motivator as I am surrounded by Fabletics all the time. Everywhere I go in my house is a Fablectics bag or a legging – so that’s the greatest motivator of all.”

She can be quite the Mrs. Motivator – just much better dressed than the Mr. Motivator counterpart – when it comes to her pals, confirming the suggestion with a trademark laugh, “friends are my favourite motivators though! You have to have a great group of girls around you – it just makes it much more fun. But I do exercise just for me, having a discipline makes me feel so good.” I take a moment to pause, imagine if Kate works out with her mother, Goldie Hawn! But the image is just too much sass for one to cope with, so I move on mentally.

Setting up a business in the heavily saturated sportswear market must present itself with serious challenges. However with a series of vibrant printed leggings and soft tonal two pieces that whilst being feminine, don’t sacrifice on the fierceness, Kate is going from strength to strength. The fashion equivalent of going up a dumb bell weight or too, if you will!

Embodying that much lauded term, ‘girl boss’ has itself has been quite the challenge for Kate too, “the hardest thing for women and the most difficult hurdle for women to jump over is confidence. You have to stop asking permission – you need to have the confidence to just go for it. It can be very challenging for women to do but once you get over that you realize that it was not that hard in the first place.”

Putting herself at the forefront of the conversation about her success has been equally challenging, “Women by nature don’t feel like we can own our success like men do. If someone says, ‘wow you are doing so well,’ you act embarrassed instead of saying, ‘yeah man, it’s been awesome. I am super proud about it and we are killing it!’”

The cultural shift in the supreme power of the female voice is equally having an effect on Hudson too, “society has placed roles for us for so long and it’s seen as ‘natural’ for women to be placed in more submissive or suppressed positions. Now there is a change in that by us talking bout that and actively changing the vocabulary we use to talk about ourselves after hundred of years of programming. We should no longer be apologetic and it’s ok for you to be proud of being your own boss and it’s ok to also say no too. It’s a new language that we are engraining into ourselves.” Kate is literally finger clicking good – or everything she says should come with a hair flick.

Her tips therefore for any budding businesswoman? Well that’s simple, “don’t be afraid to speak your mind, don’t worry about people liking you but be kind and listen, be curious and if you really believe in something you have to go with your gut.”

Speaking of speaking your mind, I can’t help but ask Kate – given her certified girl crush and fitness goals status – how the hell one should go about flirting up a storm on the tread mill with your long sought after gym crush?

“Well firstly I wouldn’t ever wear make-up to the gym,” Kate shares before leaning in with a mischievous look rippling across her Hollywood features. Pursing her lips, she continues, “Firstly you wait for them to have the guts to approach you – that is the kind of man you want. There are little things you can do to give him some singles, like simply look at him to initiate it if you need to!”

Easier said than done though when you are Kate Hudson right? “I am not a big fan of the chase – for me I like guys who have guts. Don’t waste your time, just go up to him and say, ‘you are really handsome, do you want to go out?’ He might say, ‘not at all,’ or he might say, ‘yeah!’ I am all for putting it out there and being yourself.”

Being true to oneself might just be the secret to Hudson’s Hollywood come business mogul success, then? “Well the truth is when you are in a relationship with anyone or even yourself that is the real deal – it’s the only way it’s going to work if you are truly yourself.” Amen, sister!

Kate Hudson is the co-founder of Fabletics.

                                  Whoopi Goldberg

Whoopi Goldberg co-hosted God’s Love We Deliver’s second annual Love Rocks NYC! benefit at New York’s Beacon Theatre on March 15.

Keith Richards, Mavis Staples, Steely Dan’s Donald Fagen, Lucinda Williams and Norah Jones were among the performers that appeared onstage for the star-studded second event.

This year’s benefit concert was hosted by Goldberg, Bill Murray and the Bacon Brothers and presented by fashion designer John Varvatos and Greg Williamson. The event concluded with all of the participating artists joining Ziggy Marley onstage to perform Bob Marley’s “One Love.”

Scroll up to watch the performance via the clip above.

Love Rocks NYC! raises money for God’s Love We Deliver, a non-profit organization that provides meals and nutrition counseling for people with severe illnesses.

Goldberg is a vocal marijuana advocate so she even gave guests a few tips on how to budget in order to donate more to the cause.

“Buy a joint instead of the bag. Make cocktails at home,” she quipped.

Meanwhile, Bravo housewife Luann de Lesseps reportedly “ducked out early with a young pal, and she “appeared to have knocked back a few, but her rep insisted she’s not drinking.”

“She was on medication for a bug she got in Colombia. It’s pretty strong medication. She was feeling nauseous. She’s really serious about sobriety and is completely focused on her wellness. She’s doing yoga every day,” he said.

The former countess recently completed a stint in rehab after being arrested for disorderly intoxication.

She also recently went on Bravo’s “Watch What Happens Live” and clutched a glass of white wine on the show. But a rep said, “It all was for showbiz,” and she just held the glass and did not indulge.

The last time we were together, I was a toddler with a light brown sprinkling around my nose. Now I am in my mid-twenties, and the spots that once peppered my skin have evolved into colonies of hyperpigmentation across my face. No amount of daily sunblock and whitening creams forced on me by my mother could stop the epidemic.

I stood before my aunt as a grown woman, but immediately channeled the same slew of excuses that I had been reciting since I was nine years old: Yes, I wear sunscreen every day; yes, I went to a dermatologist; no, I can’t laser them off because they’re genetic; no, the doctor said there’s nothing I can do.

“Ruined,” my mother used to say. “The freckles ruin your face.”

To her, every freckle is a flaw. She has always hated her own freckles, which have blurred into a mix of the natural spots she inherited from my grandmother and damage from growing up under Thailand’s blazing sun.

When I was a child, I spent mornings seated next to my mother’s feet, gazing up at her with a daughter’s fascination as she applied globs of skin-lightening creams. The lotions promised to wipe the color away and reveal a blank white canvas underneath.

She was repentant for a childhood spent outdoors near the equator, and her vanity table always reminded me of the luxurious makeup counters at high-end department stores. In first grade, she gave me my first bottle of sunscreen and instructed me to apply it every morning before I left the house. Wow, I thought. My very own cream to apply every morning. So I did, without question.

For years of my childhood, we lived in a predominantly white suburb outside of Washington D.C., where I was worried about more than a few light spots on my face. Instead, I spent my school days wondering why my classmates wholeheartedly enjoyed calling me Chinese at recess even when I told them I was Thai.

I never really noticed my own freckles until I was 9 years old and we moved to Thailand — which is where I also learned that my mother’s aversion to freckles is typical in the culture.

Freckles are considered “dirty” on a face that should be flawless, silky smooth, and preferably white. For every shelf lined with self-tanners at Target and CVS in the United States, there are aisles of whitening lotions at every drugstore in Bangkok, selling shades of white I had only ever seen in the paint department at Home Depot. The commercials on Thai television for these skin-lightening lotion brands almost always star a biracial actress (half Thai, half Caucasian is the standard) and a color gradient of her skin tone, from darkest to lightest.

Although I ‘d moved to Thailand with three years of daily sunscreen application already under my belt, I kept developing freckles. It wasn’t long before I too succumbed to the marketing ploys of skin-lightening creams; my mother, alarmed, took matters into her own spotted hands and bought a bottle for me at the supermarket.

The instructions, as my mother translated them to me, said to lather the cream all over my face and body twice a day. So I did, without question. But the freckles kept coming, along with the barrage of inquiries from my mother’s friends and other Asian moms in the P.T.A.

“What are you going to do?” “You’ve tried the creams?” “The freckles are going to ruin her face.” “She has to be careful or they will get worse.”

White skin was clean. Beautiful. Pristine. Suddenly, my tan and freckled skin wasn’t good enough. It wasn’t beautiful under any circumstance.

                                  * * *

These days I wake up to my boyfriend. “Good morning, freckles,” he says. He covers my brown polka dots in kisses before rolling out of bed to greet the sun and his espresso maker. He tells me often that my freckles are his favorite thing about me. I remind him that I also have a great personality, to which he replies, “Oh, that too.”

I am now the proud aunt to two half-Thai, half-white nieces: three-year-old Amaya and one-year-old Adriana. Neither of the girls shows signs of freckling yet. Their mother is my cousin, and she enforces a strict ban on negative body image talk under their roof. Grandma is not allowed to tease the girls about their weight or features, and my cousin’s determination to raise strong women with positive body images is already paying off: I have only ever heard Amaya call someone “ugly” once, and “someone” happened to be a lizard crossing Dora the Explorer’s path on TV. She loves fair-skinned Ariel and Cinderella as much as she loves princesses of color like Tiana and Jasmine.

Most importantly, she is more concerned with catching the grasshoppers hiding out in the basement than fussing about her looks.

These days, I think about how many grasshoppers I could have caught in the years I lost lamenting my freckles.

I think about my mother and the many vacations we spent in Hawaii and on the sunny shores of southern Thailand. She spent them ducking in the shade with a visor on and shielding her face with a magazine, no matter how persistently my brothers and I begged for her to jump in the water with us. My dad always joined in on the fun, crashing into the waves for hours until he was sunburned to a crisp. He has fewer sun spots than my mother. He does not call them “sun damage.” In fact, he does not call them anything.

A few years ago, I saw a dermatologist who closed the case of my unstoppable freckling — he explained that my freckles are not sun damage but hereditary, and quite a unique feature for Asian skin.

There is nothing that can be done to mitigate the appearance of hereditary freckles, and to me, this called for celebration. It meant the end of an expensive, fruitless journey down countless skincare aisles. I couldn’t wait to share the news with my mother when I got home that evening.

“Ma! Guess what? Our freckles aren’t from sun damage. They’re hereditary,” I said, warming up for my victory lap around the living room.

Her face fell. “What do you mean?” she asked.

“It means you can’t do anything to get rid of them,” I replied. “That’s why none of those creams ever worked.”

She paused. “Not even the laser?”

There was no celebration that followed. Victory lap cancelled. My mother sat back in her chair, defeated. The idea of resigning herself to a life with freckles was not something she would ease in to — maybe not ever.

As for me, I try to remember that I am not damaged. I am unique, without question.

Hubert de Givenchy passed away this week, and Jenni NZ wanted to share this article about the iconic French designer and his muse, Audrey Hepburn.

High heels are the worst, and women are finally ditching them.” Greenjeans found this article refreshing, and hopes it’s a thing and not just a trend.

Greenjeans also wanted to share the trailer for Fresh Dressed, a 2015 documentary about hip hop fashion. Lots about music, fashion as self-expression, men’s fashion, street style, and what it takes to bring a new brand to retail.

Rachylou enjoyed this interview with Kate and Andy Spade, the founders of the Kate Spade brand.

What self-care really means isn’t about fashion per se, but La Belle Demimondaine thinks “it’s significant at a time when a lot of us are talking through all of our ‘life stuff,’, trying to sort out the chaff, before being able to settle upon specific style choices and wardrobe building.”
