How Billy Russo’s Love For the Punisher Spawned Jigsaw

Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for The Punisher.

It’s no secret that the character Billy Russo becomes the villain Jigsaw. It’s right there in the comics. But when you start watching Marvel’s The Punisher, it might be difficult to see how Ben Barnes’ war vet, and best friend of Frank Castle, can become this comic-book bad guy. Indeed, some fans were unsure that this new version of Russo would even become his comic-book alter ego.

As Season 1 wears on, however, Billy Russo is gradually transformed into Frank Castle’s arch-enemy. Paradoxically, it’s the unwavering affection Russo has for Frank that makes his transition to villain, and ultimately Jigsaw, so convincing.

Jon Bernthal, who plays Frank Castle in the show, tells FANDOM: “I think [Ben Barnes as Russo] does a beautiful job, and something that I thought was really present in everything he did is this love that he had for Frank. Even as they become complete antagonists and they go up against each other, the love is always there. I think that’s really honest.”

Honest equals real. Which in turn equals believable. These are three-dimensional, complicated characters. Honesty, authenticity and credibility are the benchmarks of this series and that can sometimes make it a tough watch.

Ben Barnes does a beautiful job as Billy Russo.

The Man in the Mirror

Marvel’s The Punisher takes the dark tone of the Defenders series and magnifies it tenfold. If there’s escapist fun to be had amid the gloomier, murkier aspects in Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist — and team-up show The Defenders – there’s a distinct lack of it in The Punisher. In dealing with themes like PTSD and terrorism, The Punisher feels grittily realistic. And its violence is brutal; the results of said violence, visceral.

From the start, Russo is set up as ally to a presumed-dead Frank Castle. When Russo finds out his old friend still alive, they meet, and he keeps up what is eventually revealed to be a charade. Sure enough, we find out that Russo is working against Frank with nefarious sociopathic CIA operative Rawlins and wants him dead. In the final episode, a fight with Frank goes badly wrong for Russo. It’s this that sparks his transition to Jigsaw, setting up a villain we’re eagerly looking forward to seeing next season.

While the comics saw handsome gangster Billy Russo receive the facial scars that earn him his Jigsaw nickname from a close encounter with a pane of glass, Frank carves up Billy’s face on a broken carousel mirror. We later learn that Russo’s brain may never fully recover from the savage beating he endures. Later, in the hospital, there’s doubt cast on what he’ll remember if he ever wakes up from his coma.

Bernthal says that, in switching the glass from the comics to a broken mirror in the series, another layer is added to their complex relationship, and to the conflict between them.

“He really cares what Frank thinks,” he says. “And I think that ability then to show him to himself at the end and to make him see what he’s done, and for us to really look at each other through it and to now bring him into my world and understand the shame… I think it was good for us.”

It’s difficult to know what this means for Season 2 of The Punisher, presuming we get one. But it’s safe to say that the dynamic between them won’t be easy to pigeonhole.

Russo is in cahoots with CIA operative, Rawlins.

A Relevant and Honest Origin Story

Showrunner Steve Lightfoot says that the hard work wasn’t in setting up Jigsaw’s signature look – his scarred face – but in building the character.

“It’s his origin story, it’s our version of it,” says Lightfoot. “In some ways, it was all about creating a version of Billy Russo as a character that felt real and relevant and sort of honest. And I think Ben breathed such life into him. We always knew how it was going to end but in some ways, the turning him into Jigsaw is the easy part because all you need to do is mess his face up at the end. But the thing I’m most proud of is I think we’d created a fantastic character before that happened.”

As for that scene at the season climax when Castle “messes up” Russo’s face, it was a neat way of bringing things full circle.

“Rather than just being in a flashy place, it was born of wanting it to relate right back to everything that had started this journey,” says Lightfoot. “So there was always something about this story [that] was always going to end up back at this carousel [where Castle’s family was killed]. And the great thing about carousels is they have mirrors right around the inside. So once we’d worked out that this thing was all about ending where it began it was then about, well, there’s plenty of glass available to us.”

The Punisher is now available on Netflix.

Migos Rapper Offset Has Secret Love Child…Wait, What?

Migos rapper Offset is a father. No it’s not his fiancee Cardi B’s, it’s a secret love child and he doesn’t plan on calling Maury.

Reports Page Six:

Migos rapper Offset appeared in court recently and admitted to fathering a secret love child seven years ago.

The woman with whom 25-year-old Offset had relations, Justine Watson, requested in August more child support for their 7-year-old son, Jordan, according to court documents, obtained by Page Six via The Blast. Watson claimed Offset was Jordan’s father despite never having taken a DNA test and said he sporadically provided financial assistance. Watson requested retroactive child support, health insurance for their son and $ 15,000 for attorneys’ fees.

Offset responded to the case in October, admitting he was Jordan’s father. He also said he wanted joint legal and physical custody of Jordan, and wanted Jordan’s last name to be changed to his own. Offset also said he would provide health insurance and would cover medical expenses for Jordan, as well as child support that “is based upon the income of the parties.”

Sounds like Offset is being a standup guy. Maybe the kid looks just like him, but we’d highly recommend getting a paternity test to be sure all his bases are covered.

Just saying.

Before you ask, this means Offset has three kids with three different women.

‘Justice League’: Fans Show Cyborg Some Love

Aw, Cyborg. Some Justice League fans aren’t overly happy with the mechanoid metahuman’s inclusion in Zack Snyder’s film. Some of his critics see his presence as being at the expense of the widely adored Martian Manhunter, who was one of the original founders of the Justice League of America, or JLA for short. That’s alongside prestigious names including Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman, The Flash, Aquaman and Green Lantern, of course.

It isn’t the fault of the DC Extended Universe, though. DC Comics relaunched their entire comic-book line back in 2011 and it was then that the change was made. We discussed the reasons for Cyborg’s retconned foundership here:

Why Was Martian Manhunter Replaced by Cyborg as a Justice League Founder?

But while a contingent of fans expresses their displeasure, a faction of DC fans has sprung up celebrating Cyborg. They love everything the half-man, half-machine superhero is, and are using the hashtag #borglife to shout about it.

In Justice League, Cyborg joins Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman and The Flash as part of a squad of metahumans rounded up by Bruce Wayne to tackle the threat posed by big bad Steppenwolf. His cybernetic enhancements come with heavy artillery built in, giving the team the extra firepower they’ll need to take on their powerful foe.

During a scene in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, we saw Cyborg’s creation, as Victor Stone is transformed by his scientist father using experimental technology following a tragic accident.

Helen Mirren Would Love to Play Donald Trump

Dame Helen Mirren wants Alec Baldwin’s job. If Baldwin ever gets tired of playing President Donald Trump. on Saturday Night Live, the Oscar-winning actress told a crowd at Loyola Marymount University’s School of Film & TV last month that she would love to test her skills by playing Trump.

“I’d be so funny as Trump,” Mirren said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “I love it. I’ve almost got the hair!”

It’s not just a lark, for Mirren, though. She thinks playing the President of the United States would be a challenge even for her formidable acting skills. “I mean what a fascinating character. What an extraordinary character. I mean that’s a character isn’t it, the real thing?” she said. “But you know, a fantastic sort of slightly Shakespearean character. He may have a Shakespearean fall, I don’t know but you know, he is an extraordinary character.”

As an actress, Mirren knows that she would need to get into Trump’s mind to properly portray him, and she is fully prepared to do it. “I don’t think that would be too difficult to penetrate [his mind] quite honestly,” she said. “You look at the upbringing. You look at the schooling, the father, the mother. I don’t know much about Mr. Trump’s background, but if I was to play him, I would definitely start there. You have to start with the child, and the child is very much in Trump.” Hopefully Saturday Night Live will give Mirren the chance to fulfill her dream.

My greatest loves are the ocean (slash being outdoors in general), my husband and cooking and sharing delicious vegan food with friends.

We live in an imperfect world, so I focus on chasing progress instead of perfection and inviting others to do the same. For me living gently is all about making those small choices day to day that contribute to a greater good, being conscious in my choices and my impact on the world. Progress not perfection.

Lisa-Marie Schuchert-Rola in Bremen, Germany – Follow: @maridalor

Raised as vegetarian girl who loved to jump from the highest trees and changed into vegan as a teen, I was always confronted with reflecting my behavior, respecting mother nature and knowing there are no boundaries between us and the earth. Fashion has always been THE thing for me and I tried out many different styles until I found myself. But what really changed my point of view was becoming a mother of two. Besides creating content for my blog www.maridalor.com, I also love making people smile and spreading positive vibes into the world (even if I look very serious in my photos!). I love vegan cinnamon buns and my husband’s smoothies. I love perfectly fitting jeans and simple jewelry. I love breathing the early morning air and our two black cats.

Consciousness is the key to a life. If we think about our behavior towards everything even in the smallest creatures – the world would be a better place. Having a positive mind and smiling at other people is big first step to generating a better world. Reducing your consumption and buying less spontaneously also makes a big impact. It’s the little steps that count and toward the bigger picture.

5 reasons why we’re (probably) still looking for love online

Promotional feature with eharmony

Don’t wait for fate…

When it comes to finding a potential relationship online, we singles are a hardened lot. From playing dating app bingo (which one actually works?), to encountering that all too familiar ‘Greg and I have this really cute single friend you just HAVE to meet’ (yawn), the search for a mate in the modern world has become a tricksy thing.

So, it’s time to step away from the swipe. Relationship site eharmony is here to help you get ahead in the game, using a unique scientific matching system to ensure that you are paired with potential partners based on key characteristics and compatibility. Using an in-depth questionnaire, eharmony works out all those wonderful ‘isms’ that make us individual (yes, even that closet obsession with Tudor romance novels), and finds someone that’ll love us as a person, not a profile.

Not convinced? Ask yourself why you are still looking for love online, then let eharmony show you the way…

I’m too busy…
Ah, that old chestnut. Between nailing life 24/7 (gym, children, work, generally being amazing) ‘finding the time’ to meet someone special is a struggle, which is why eharmony are on hand to do most of the legwork. Once you’ve filled in your questionnaire, a search is conducted across millions of singles based on 18 Key Dimensions that are crucial for relationship success. Then hey presto, a lovely batch of potential matches is delivered to your inbox daily to peruse as and when you wish. Yes, even during your lunch break. Happy days.

I’m too picky…
Stop that, right now. Now, we appreciate that if you’ve had a run of bad dates (it happens), internet-weary singletons can sometimes feel like they are setting the bar too high. Not true. Only you know what makes you happy, and that is SO important when looking for a fulfilling, long-lasting relationship. If you are honest with yourself about what you want, then eharmony will find matches with a similar line of thinking. Don’t ever settle for second best, you gorgeous thing!

I’ve lost my confidence…
Looking for love online is a double-edged sword for a lot of singles. If you’re newly out of a relationship, it can be a way of easing you back into the dating game. For others, it’s the simple fact they might not feel comfortable meeting people the ‘old-fashioned way’, i.e. in a pub/nightclub. Using a relationship site like eharmony can help rebuild that confidence as you can take things at your own pace and be assured the scientific formula is introducing you only to people you will be compatible with. Great relationships are built with trust and over time. So breathe, and take things as they come.

I’m not everyone’s ‘usual’ type…
Define ‘usual’. Never judge yourself based on the profiles you see. It’s the unique things we’re into that make us amazing, and trust us – there is someone out there that’ll adore your Jaffa Cake addiction.

I’m a believer…
*fist pump* Yes, you are! And never let go of that. Since launching in 2008, eharmony has made millions of matches that have led to relationships, marriages and yes, even babies. So don’t wait for fate. Shake off that last date disaster Carrie Bradshaw-style, and let the experts take the lead.

It’s hard to scroll through the darling boutiques on Instagram without getting shopping on the brain. Usually I can resist the cute boho clothes, the sleek furniture pieces, the baby rompers. But when it comes to bath and body products? Wellll, I need soap anyway…

And when the products are all-natural, high-quality goods made by a mom and her two smart kidpreneurs, forget it. There’s no sense resisting. Just take my money. Please.

That’s exactly the case with hunnybunny, which is both a brick-and-mortar boutique in Washington D.C. and an online store. Here’s the best part: The purveyors are Nya Byers, age 8, and 3-year-old Zuri, who make hunnybunny products — homemade soaps, body bars, face masks, scrubs, bath fizzies, shampoo bars, deodorant, and more — with their mom, Leigh Byers.

A person (the head is cropped out of the image) holds a tray of hunnybunny products, like round soaps and lotion bars that are shaped like stars

In addition to being all-natural, these artisan products come in therapeutic blends and unique scents — cherry almond swirl bars, lemon poppyseed soap, chamomile lemongrass shampoo — and they look charming enough to give as gifts.

A grainy-looking beige soap from hunnybunny that has a rabbit and the word "body" stamped on the soap

Inspiration for the store came when Zuri was born.

“She had very sensitive, dry, itchy skin when she was a baby,” Leigh says. “So we started taking a look at the ingredients we were putting on her, and we were alarmed by that.”

Because skin and hair products are absorbed by the body, they wanted to use ingredients that actually feed and nourish the skin.

Two small girls, mixing bath products in the Hunnybunny shop

A lot of trial, error, and mixing bowls later, the first hunnybunny product was born – a soothing sunflower and calendula body bar.

“We messed it up terribly the first few times, but we knew when we got it right,” Leigh says.

Now all hunnybunny products must pass the “owner’s challenge” — that is, Leigh ensures that everything is safe and gentle enough to be used by the entire family.

“My babies use everything,” Leigh says. “That’s the real test.”

What kind of specialty bath and body products do you use?

Love Halloween? Here’s a checklist to help you do it right

by

Maggie Downs

posted in Life

Some people count down the days until Christmas. But me? I can’t wait for Halloween.

I’m lucky enough to have given birth to someone who shares my passion.

The world's most adorable toddler sits on a porch with a pumpkin decorated for Halloween and makes a silly face with his tongue sticking out

As I child and teenager, I celebrated the holiday with abandon. I’ve done cute costumes (Snow White), crazy costumes (sexy Snow White), and spooky costumes (burnt and bloody Snow White). (Hey, I wanted to get another year out of my Snow White costume, okay?)

Now as a mom, I’m a little more cautious with how I don my apparel for Halloween festivities. Case in point: I watched a YouTube unicorn makeup tutorial the other day, and I couldn’t stop cringing every time the amateur makeup artist flicked glitter along the inner rim of her eyelid.

“Noooo!” I shouted at my laptop, as though this adorable but misguided unicorn girl could hear me. “Think of your eyes!”

Maybe I’m a little biased, since my eyes seem to be deteriorating by leaps and bounds every since I hit 30, so eye damage frightens me more than any Halloween horror movie.

A spooky PSA that says "Don't let an eye infection be the scariest part of your Halloween" and features a wrapped mummy-like character with red eyes

On my side is the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which just issued its annual warning about eye safety. The CDC’s focus is on decorative contact lenses worn without a prescription, which can lead to eye scratches, eye sores, infections, and vision loss. (Same goes for sparkly glitter in your eyes, natch.)

No matter how enthusiastic you are about Halloween (guilty), don’t purchase decorate contact lenses from online shops, costume stores, flea markets, beauty salons, or anyone else who isn’t your legit eye doctor.

A PSA from the CDC that warns against the dangers of decorative contact lenses without a prescription and includes drawings of a Frankenstein monster-like face, Dracula, a witch, and a pirate.

Along with the CDC, the Food and Drug Administration has issued some additional Halloween safety guidelines.

When you’re getting decked out:

• Wear costumes that say “flame resistant” on the label. If you make your costume, use flame-resistant fabrics such as polyester or nylon.

• Wear bright, reflective costumes or add strips of reflective tape so you’ll be more visible; make sure the costumes aren’t so long that you’re in danger of tripping.

• Wear makeup and hats rather than masks that can obscure your vision.

• Test the makeup you plan to use in advance. Put a small amount on the arm of the person who will be wearing it. If a rash, redness, swelling, or other signs of irritation develop where the makeup was applied, that’s a sign of a possible allergy.

• Vibrantly colored makeup is popular at Halloween. Check FDA’s list of color additives to see if the colors are FDA approved. If they aren’t approved for their intended use, don’t use them. (Especially around the eyes!)

When you’re out and about in the neighborhood:

• Don’t eat candy until it has been inspected at home.

• In case of a food allergy, check the label to ensure the allergen isn’t present. Tell children not to accept—or eat—anything that isn’t commercially wrapped.

• If you have very young children, remove any choking hazards such as gum, peanuts, hard candies, or small toys from the Halloween bags.

• Inspect commercially wrapped treats for signs of tampering, such as an unusual appearance or discoloration, tiny pinholes, or tears in wrappers. Throw away anything that looks suspicious.

Before you start bobbing for apples:

• Reduce the risk of bacteria by thoroughly rinsing the apples under cool running water.

Before you get caught up, listen up: Love is not a legitimate excuse for irresponsible spending. So, choose to avoid these unloving financial behaviors for Valentine’s Day:

Do Not Spend More Than You Can Afford

Being overly generous when money is tight does nothing good for the giver or the receiver. More importantly, don’t get caught up in trying to impress your friends and relatives. Honesty, including financial honesty, is key to any healthy relationship. So, don’t pretend to have money you don’t have by playing the “big spender” role.

Do Not Use Love as a Justification for Emotional Spending

Love is not about making financial decisions with your heart, instead of your head. Even though emotional spending can give a temporary high, it can also lead to guilt, buyer’s remorse, and even resentment between partners. Many a relationship have been destroyed by this cycle.

Do Not Blackmail Your Sweetheart Into Spending

Never pressure anyone to purchase financially irresponsible Valentine’s Day gifts, in order to “prove” their love to you, or worse, to impress your friends and family.

Giving and receiving as an expression of love is not about price tags, but about meaning. The most meaningful gift does not have to cost an arm and a leg, and an expensive gift without meaning will be soon forgotten, on top of being a waste of money.

To be financially responsible without coming off as cheap or insensitive, take my advice:

Do Not Wait Until the Last Minute!

Desperation or impulse spending nearly always results in spending more money than intended, or getting a less than ideal gift—or worse, both. People can tell when you didn’t put thought into their gift, no matter how much you spend at the last minute. The key to getting the best products and services for the lowest prices is to plan your purchases and shop for them in advance. This also gives you more options, including shopping online, with enough time to order items for arrival before Valentine’s Day, without incurring hefty shipping charges.

Budget for Valentine’s Day, as You Would for All Gift-Giving Occasions

If you can, take the time to get buy-in, and manage the expectations of your Valentine. Openly discuss what you can and can’t afford in advance, and set mutually agreed upon spending limits that fit into your respective budgets.

Use the Most Powerful Aphrodisiac: Your Imagination

Instead of a big expensive purchase, think of a thoughtful, affordable gift, along with romantic ways to make the day special. Invest your time and attention instead of more money. Often, overspending is really just an expensive cop-out to avoid investing genuine emotion and true meaning into Valentine’s Day.
Focus on four areas:

  1. Things you can personally do for your sweetheart.
  2. Things you can do together.
  3. Things you can make for your Valentine.
  4. Places you can go together.

For example, gift your partner with a spa day, with you personally giving the mani/pedi, massage, shampoo, and several hours of your undivided attention. If you are artistically inclined, compose a song, or dedicate a handmade book of poetry or an original painting to your Valentine. How about enrolling in a class together, such as ballroom dancing, which could enhance your sense of teamwork and ensure you are in each others arms at least once a week. Of course, this kind of stuff will take thought, planning, preparation, and time (see “Do Not Wait Until the Last Minute!” above) to pull off.

The Bottom Line: Spending irresponsibly is no way to say “I love you,” even on Valentine’s Day. No one who really loves you would want you to do it. With advance planning and communication, you can have Valentine’s Day romance without blowing your finances.

Love Island’s Montana Brown and Georgia Harrison look incredible as they share pictures from holiday in the Maldives

LOVE Island’s Montana Brown and Georgia Harrison have proved their friendship goes beyond the villa as they holiday together in the Maldives.

The pair have thrilled fans by sharing an array of sexy images as they pose in their bikinis in shots reminiscent to the days this summer when they were living in beach wear 24/7.

Jaw-dropping shots include Montana showing some serious side-boob in a daring black swimming costume.

She captioned it: “Roses are red, Violets are blue I’m in the Maldives, I bet you wish you were too 😂

Meanwhile Georgia revealed her bum cheeks as she strolled along the pier in a racy red swimming costume, which she modestly captioned: “Happiness comes in waves 🌊

While Montana may wow with her incredible figure now, she recently admitted that a year ago she wouldn’t have applied to Love Island as she wasn’t happy with her body.

Georgia revealed her bum in this skimpy number

Speaking exclusively to The Sun Online, she said: “I wouldn’t say I was big, but it’s about being confident in yourself and the way you look and I wasn’t confident about the way I looked.

“I definitely wouldn’t have gone on Love Island, as in that environment if you do have an insecurity or are not fully confident in yourself it exacerbates it, so I don’t think I could have done it.

“And then there would have been no underboob bikini!”

Montana, who says it took a year for her to achieve her toned and athletic figure, says getting the definition and shedding some pounds has improved her self-esteem and given her the confidence to wear whatever she wants.

She said: “It just makes me not care about getting in a bikini and it does make a difference to my self-esteem as I can wear more.

“Before I toned up I would never wear shorts and crop top or anything, it would be straight up no, as I felt bulky around my stomach.

“It’s so nice to be able to buy what I want and not worry whether about whether or not it will suit me.”

Rosie O’Donnell will ‘always love’ her estranged daughter

OHMYGOSSIP — Rosie O’Donnell will “always love” her estranged daughter.
The 55-year-old comic lashed out at her daughter Chelsea Alliegro last month when she accused her of cashing in on the tragic death of Rosie’s former spouse Michelle Rounds – who seemingly took her own life in September – after Chelsea gave an interview shortly after the tragedy, where revealed she is expecting her first child with husband Nick Alliegro, which she insists Rosie will have no part in.
However, despite the pair warring with one another, Rosie has admitted she still holds Chelsea in her heart, and is disappointed that her daughter has claimed she won’t have a part in her baby’s life.
When asked how it felt to be excluded from Chelsea’s growing family, Rosie said: “To say it’s not painful is a lie. I love her and I will always love her.”
And Rosie insists that whilst she understands that Chelsea thinks she “sucks”, it can be hard to navigate through their tumultuous relationship whilst under the scrutiny of the media.
She added to E! News: “She thinks I suck right now. The press part is a little bit hard. She doesn’t always have the ability to make the right decisions in the moment. And a lot of people in the press have a predatory instinct against her.”
Meanwhile, Chelsea claimed she doesn’t think her relationship with her mother can ever be “mended”.

She said: “Rosie will not have a part in this child’s life … Rosie and I don’t have a relationship any more. I don’t think it can ever be mended. I really don’t think there is any hope for our relationship.”
Earlier this year, Chelsea accused Rosie of being verbally abusive towards her and of threatening to attack her with a wine bottle.
Rosie responded by addressing her adopted daughter’s accusations during a speech at the GLAAD Media Awards in New York City.
Making reference to Joan Crawford, who had a strained relationship with her adopted daughter Christina, Rosie said: “Things have been rough in my family in the last week. Let’s just say I feel strongly Joan Crawford was framed.”

How to love the job you’re in

If you’re feeling frustrated at work but quitting isn’t an option, switching your mind set in 3 simple steps might just be the answer says career coach and author CLARE JOSA.

How often have you started a sentence with:  “I’ll feel happy when…”? Well stop because the latest research shows that each time you tell yourself how bad your current situation is, you create motorways in the brain that keep you stuck in complaining mode.
These neural pathways mean that a simple trigger, such as your boss saying something in the wrong tone of voice, can reawaken negative thoughts and feelings creating the overall sense that your working life is one big fail. Sound familiar?

If this is you then reprogramming your brain for contentment might just be the answer says Dare To Dream Bigger author Clare Josa. Here she explains how its done.

A is for Accept
As soon as you become aware of tension in the body, especially in your jaw, face or gut, it’s likely down to a negative thought pattern. Instead of engaging with these negative emotions, accept them as an observer. Stop feeding them and they start to lose their power.

B is for Breathe
Shift your breathing to your abdominal area, breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth with a sigh. This rebalances the nervous system. Imagine you’re bringing your energy out of your head and into your belly, breathing out through your feet.

C is for Choose
Pick one positive thing about your current situation – no matter how small it is – and express gratitude for it. This isn’t about pretending, it’s about freeing yourself to experience happier emotions despite what’s going on around you.

Why I love the new Ergobaby Omni 360

by

Ashleigh Evans

posted in Products

Babywearing used to intimidate me. I first had twins and it wasn’t really an option. Yes, there are twin carriers, but that’s a whole lot of baby to wear. I honestly didn’t consider it with my next daughter until she was older and we got a hand-me-down from a friend, but she hated being carried. Now with my fourth, another singleton, I was excited to give babywearing a go, but not sure it would work for us, so I was hesitant to spend money on a carrier.

Luckily I was given a chance to try out the new Ergobaby Omni 360.

We’re a pretty active family — we walk to school almost daily and Saturdays are sports days when pushing around a stroller isn’t always easy. Plus my 5-week-old little guy, Liam, loves to be held close to me, so we used the Omni 360 almost immediately after he was born.

I love having the option to carry my son in the front while he’s so small, and eventually on my back or hip as he grows and gets heavier. Once Liam has more head control (around the time he starts sitting up!), I can turn him forward-facing in the front so he can look out at everything; or if he gets fussy or needs to nurse, I can quickly change him from forward- to rear-facing, which wasn’t easy to do with the other carrier I tried with my daughter.

The first week of school was the Omni’s real test run. We’re still getting adjusted to our new schedule with a baby and Liam is usually sleeping when it’s time to walk to school. I simply took him from his bassinet and strapped him in the Ergobaby — he barely woke up! From that moment on, I was in love with it. He is so comfortable in the carrier and it supports his hips by keeping them in a healthy “M” shape.

I was a little scared that my back would start hurting when I carried Liam, especially since I don’t have much abdominal support after my pregnancy, but the Omni is seriously so comfortable. There is a great pad for your lower back strap that provides lumbar support, which is essential especially once your child gets heavier.

Grocery shopping with an infant can be difficult, to say the least — it’s not safe to put your car seat on top of the cart, but if you put it in the cart itself, it takes up all the space. So I tried wearing Liam at the store. Game changer! Not only did he sleep the entire shopping trip, I had a whole basket to put my groceries in.

Some more Omni features I love:

1. It can carry babies as small as 7 pounds, right on up to 36 months or 33 pounds, whichever comes first. Also, there’s no infant insert needed, unlike other carriers.

2. There’s a pouch to put your phone or cards in, which is much easier than carrying a purse. If we happen to switch to the stroller, I can unzip the pouch and take it with me.

3. The carrier comes with a hood that folds into a little pocket when not in use. It’s perfect for sunny days or when it’s drizzling.

4. The Omni is very easy to adjust and put on if I’m solo. I was afraid I’d need my husband’s help, but I can strap Liam in the carrier in just a few moves.

5. The Omni is machine washable in case of any spills or spit-up, although I air-dry it outside.

6. The carrier is easily adjustable: my husband can wear it as comfortably as I can. While I prefer to have the back straps in an “H,” Ricky prefers to cross them for more support.

Thinking about baby wearing? Don’t hesitate to try the Omni 360! It has quickly become one of our most essential baby items.

Idris Elba: Falling in love is special

OHMYGOSSIP — Idris Elba says falling in love with his girlfriend Sabrina Dhowre was “pretty special”.
The 45-year-old actor began dating the former Miss Vancouver winner whilst filming his upcoming romance movie ‘The Mountain Between Us’ in Canada, and has said that meeting her meant life imitated art in the most beautiful way.
He said: “Falling in love while making a movie about falling in love is pretty special.”
Sabrina, 29, made her red carpet debut with Idris at Toronto International Film Festival earlier this month, and Idris admits it was “nice” to be able to go public with their romance.
He added to People’s ‘The Jess Cagle Interview’: “It definitely got noticed because I try to keep my personal life different. I think it’s an interesting space, especially for her. She’d never done a red carpet before and I tend not to do that. It was nice actually.”
The ‘Star Trek Beyond’ actor – who has 15-year-old daughter Isan with his ex-wife Kim Norgaard, as well as three-year-old son Winston with his former partner Naiyana Garth – is believed to have been dating Sabrina for at least seven months, and it was recently revealed he is “proud” to show her to the world.
A source said: “It’s believed Idris and Sabrina have been dating for around seven months. They’re having a great time getting to know each other and Idris feels strongly enough about Sabrina for them to be talked about in public.
“Having her on his arm on a red carpet shows how serious he is about her as he doesn’t do these things lightly.
“He usually likes to keep that side of his life private but he’s proud to show Sabrina off on his arm. It’s been a different story for Sabrina, who has uploaded several pictures of Idris to her Snapchat account.”

Good Morning Britain’s Piers Morgan brands Love Island’s Kem Cetinay and Amber Davies ‘dimwits’ and wants them banned from the show when he’s hosting

GOOD Morning Britain’s Piers Morgan has slammed Love Island’s Kem Cetinay and Amber Davies over their presenting skills – and insisted he wants them banned from returning to the show while he’s hosting.

The TV newsman gave a scathing critique of the pair after they took over GMB while he was holiday, calling them “dimwits”.

Piers Morgan slammed the Love Island stars today
ITV

The reality TV couple, who won the saucy show, were thrilled to be given a presenting slot on GMB while Piers was away.

They hosted Richard Arnold’s entertainment news slot, but their hosting debut did not go down well with Piers.

He blasted Kem and Amber on the show today, and insisted they “lowered the bar” with their hosting skills.

Piers told Richard: “In your absence apparently these two Love Island dimwits stood in for you.

“The ones with the funny names. I didn’t think anyone could lower the bar from you but they managed it.”

Piers tried to make sure they wouldn’t be back on the show, but his co-star Susanna Reid jumped in to say: “They are always welcome back”.

Piers then conceded: “But only when I’m not here… No one loves them any more.”

The television host, 52, has made no secret of his complete lack of interest in all things Love Island and slated the contestants for making money by “having sex on TV”.

He also called the islanders the most “cretinous” and “stupid” bunch of people he’d ever seen.

Yet despite proving the fans’ favourites on raunchy dating show Love Island, GMB seemed to agree with Piers as they slated the stars over their hosting debut.

They took to Twitter to slam the pair’s style as wooden and very scripted.

When your husband’s love language isn’t verbal

by

Betsy Shaw

posted in Life

My husband gave me a compliment the other morning. We were in a tent, looking out at the largest lake in Vermont after a rare and peaceful night of snuggling and not too much mosquito swatting, when he said it. Our 11-year-old daughter was sound asleep in another tent with her best friend, nearby. I was dying for a pee, and trying to get dressed while perched on the edge of the inflatable mattress Ian was still lying on.

I had my back to him and was feeling self conscious as I often do. Far better that he see the naked back of me when I am sitting down than seeing the naked front of me, what with my new 50-something-with-2 kids belly. There’s something ridiculously absurd about the idea of trying to suck it in when one is sitting down.  Especially when what needs to be sucked-in is no longer tautly attached to your abdominal muscles and more sort of just hanging there like its own separate entity — a skin sheath.

As I fiddled with my bra, trying to turn it right side out before slipping it over my head, I heard my husband’s quiet voice, a voice I adore, and a voice — when I’m fearful and anxious — I’m ashamed to say I sometimes resent for its softness.

“You have a nice back,” he said.

“I do?” I replied, self-consciously adding, “too bad it doesn’t always work so well.” (I was referring to my penchant for throwing my lower back out of whack.)

Once I had drained the situation of all spontaneous sentimentality, as I tend to do, with my back still to him, I smiled, and said. “20 years of marriage and you are just telling me that now?”

“I’ve told you that before,” he countered.

“No, you haven’t.”

“Yes, I have.”

“You have not. Maybe you’ve thought it, like I can only wish you think many other nice things you don’t say about me, but you haven’t ever said it.”

He went quiet, which is his specialty. He knew from experience this wasn’t a conversation that had any mutually satisfactory destination.

“Anyways, thank you,” I finally said.

Then, thankfully, I went quiet as well. I knew from experience that what it is I wanted from this conversation is more than any one human being alone, even my husband of 20 years, could give me. What I wanted is something even I can’t put a finger on.

It has something to do with vulnerability and a need for reassurance that I’m at least somewhat physically attractive to someone. And wanting that embarrasses me, makes me feel just a little bit ashamed, because I like to think of myself as a strong, self-assured woman. And because I’ve lived on this earth long enough to know that the only lasting validation is that which comes from inside of your own heart.

Raising two daughters, I have spent the past 15 years trying to make sure those girls fare better than I did in the self confidence/self love department. Because I’ve seen, I’ve lived, how limiting a girl’s own mind can be.

And I’m far enough away from the throes of pubescence and adolescence and all the tumult those developmental stages bring to a girl’s life to know that needing to be told you are beautiful, or at least some part of you is beautiful, is human nature. But it can also be an impediment to happiness. Because not feeling loved or attractive can lead people to do dumb and desperate and self destructive things in search of that feeling.

The important thing is, I in no way feel unloved by my husband, no matter how few times he’s ever commented on my physical appearance. Because I know that there are so many other ways to tell someone — to show them — you love them, which he does, than to do it with spoken words. And he does show me.

He shows it every time he is present and patient with our children. He shows it each time takes my hand and holds it tight when we walk. He shows me he loves me every time he doesn’t walk out on me when I’m being horrible and dramatic and awful to be around.

He’s made it clear through every stage of our marriage, including those long, ebbing stages where you wonder if there is any life beyond the tedium of three meals a day, managing schedules, diffusing meltdowns and taxiing children to and fro — oh, that stage is still in session — that he’s in and he’s in for life.

He shows me that despite how crazy our life as parents looks on the outside, he’s actually feeling the reward of what we are doing and he’s feeling appreciative he was chosen to take on that role, together with me.

And that’s all I could wish for. Well, that and the occasional unsolicited compliment.

‘Black Love’ Is Winning For OWN Network

‘Black Love’ is winning. The four-episode documentary featuring a host of celebrity couples talking honestly about marriage’s ups and down debuted to the highest ratings ever for unscripted shows on OWN.

The network has ordered more episodes of the hit docu-series which debuted Tuesday with 1.2 million total viewers.  Additionally, the premiere of “Black Love” was the #2 most social primetime episode on national cable.

The series will debut in its regular timeslot, Saturdays ‪at 9 p.m. ET/PT, ‪beginning this Saturday, September 2.

The new episodes for 2018 will feature Emmy-nominated actor Sterling K. Black Men XCEL: BE Executive Administrator Celebrates A Brother’s Love

Yvianne Hyacinthe on Black Men XCEL

In recognition of our very first Black Men XCEL Summit, celebrating the best of black male achievement, the Black Enterprise staff is sharing their stories of the men who’ve had an extraordinary impact in their own lives…

Yvianne Hyacinthe on Black Men XCEL Executive Administrator to Multimedia Sales Yvianne Hyacinthe (Photo by Seimond London)

Who is the man in your life who’s inspired you to excel?

My younger brother, Hayden Hyacinthe, besides my father and husband, is the man in my life who has inspired me to become the mother and woman that I am today.

How would you describe the impact he’s had on you?

Hayden impacted my life by showing me from a very young age that no one should take advantage of another just because they are genuinely a nice person. He saw how others took advantage of my kindness and took it for weakness. Once I moved out of my parents’ home at the age of 20, and got a roommate from college to share an apartment with, he was so protective of my every move.

What’s your fondest memory of him?

My fondest memory of Hayden is how he always called me—on a daily basis—to make sure I was taking care of myself since I no longer lived at home. He wanted to make sure I ate, which I barely did because I wasn’t a very great cook at the time; my mom always did the cooking at home.

Hayden Hyacinthe

What’s the biggest lesson he taught you?

The biggest lesson Hayden taught me was to feel the freedom to express my needs and my hurts without ever having to raise my voice or get angry because he said it takes away from being happy. Life may be difficult or unpredictable at times but we have control of it and should know how to maneuver the obstacles in it. He showed me that I should always be loved unconditionally and no less. He told me never to lose track of who I am and always remember where I came from and never let anyone make me feel less of a human being because I am a beautiful person inside and out.

What are you doing to make him proud?

I do the best that I can on a daily basis to live the way he feels I should. He emphasizes always that we have one life to live, and he wants me to live it to the fullest. And to also remember that our mom is no longer with us, therefore I am the one who replaces her and should be a positive example for all my younger cousins as well as my daughters and granddaughter. He continues to make sure I take my medication for hypertension because he says if I can prevent having another stroke, I should do as my doctor prescribes—and I do. As a matter of fact, every day at work at 11:00 a.m. when I take my medication, Hayden is the first person that comes to mind.

Love Don’t Live Here Anymore

african american couple conflict

“Sometimes we have to let go of what is killing us, even if it’s killing us to let go.” – Unknown

It’s hard to accept that the one who you planned to love forever is no longer the one that you will love forever. No one wants to feel like a failure, and when it comes to matters of the heart, it is very easy to. In order to let go, some folks have to feel like they’ve given their all, even if their partner refuses to do so and often, the one who went above and beyond is left piecing together the memoirs of a broken heart.

But life is more than short and we have examples in the form of death, pain, destruction, age and most importantly, authentic love to remind us of such a reality. For those of you who know your relationship is over, free yourself. For those who may still be unsure, read on.

1) Everything is a competition.

What started out as building a future together is now a rivalry. You no longer feel supported in your endeavors and your mate is far from being your biggest fan. Whenever your significant other places their ego above your happiness, love has taken not just a backseat, but has exited the vehicle. When you truly love someone, you acknowledge their need for recognition. The last thing you do is attempt to steal the shine.

2) “In love” is foreign in your relationship.

What is being in love? That’s what you’ve been asking yourself repeatedly as of late. Yes, love evolves and changes over time in a relationship, but being in love? That’s an ingredient to your concoction that makes your relationship tastes good. If it’s missing, throw the whole spread away.

3) You no longer hold each other at night.

The saying, “never go to bed angry” exist for a reason, and while you will have a fight or several, never allow your emotions to dictate how you treat your mate. Harboring negative feelings can enhance resentment towards your mate and widen the gap of intimacy. When you truly love someone, the last thing you want to do is allow anger to manifest within your being. If you are able to count the times that you feel like you’re sleeping next to your roommate vs. your lover, then love may not live here anymore. True love prioritizes intimacy and connections on all levels despite being annoyed.

4) There’s no urgency to make up.

There’s a difference between taking space to cool off and process following an argument and just having a “f*ck it” type of attitude. When you truly love someone, there’s a sense of urgency and humility that is present when seeking to reconcile. Anger is pushed to the side and understanding your mate’s feelings become a priority.

Love isn’t easy. There will be ups and downs and many times, you may feel like you need to walk away. If you do, that’s okay. It doesn’t make you a failure. It makes you someone who knows that both you and your former mate deserve a partner who you have an authentic, pure connection with that allows you to vibrate higher. Your mate should enhance your existence, not deplete or drain it.
