‘Mission: Impossible – Fallout’ revs up pace with Cruise control

First Black Woman on ‘America’s Test Kitchen’ And Her Mission For Women Chefs of Color

As the first woman of color on America’s Test Kitchen—a PBS TV cooking show, Elle Simone, doesn’t view her “test cook” role as just a job. She believes it’s part of her life’s mission to advance the representation for women of color and provide them with a platform for mentorship, sisterhood, and job placement in the culinary world. “Through my social enterprise SheChef, I’m most proud of the women chefs that I’ve been able to mentor directly, said Simone. Their products are on the shelves of Whole Foods, they’re cooking for celebrities, and food styling with Food52.

“I would like to see the full dismantling of the “good old boys club” ideologies. The ones that condone mental, verbal, and emotional abuse as a measure of gaining respect or shaping chefs. I want more support for those who are choosing to go against the grain of these concepts in order to create positive kitchen cultures. I would love to see our male counterparts stop pretending that it’s such a phenomenon that women chefs are equally capable, and often more so, in the kitchen.”

As a culinary activist, Simone is also passionate about creating safe spaces for all women. “The culinary industry is no stranger to the types of behaviors that spearheaded the “#MeToo movement” and since women are largely the minority of our industry, it is easy for us to slip under the radar,” she said. I’ve always felt that women chefs, especially those of color, needed a place for support and guidance; figuring out how and what that looked like, became a priority for me. I believe it’s great to create beautiful content and create social settings for women chefs but what good is any of that if we don’t feel safe, affirmed, and represented?

Below, Simone shares her insight on how she plans to bridge the culture cap for women of color in the culinary world.

Talk about your role on America’s Test Kitchen.

On the PBS show, America’s Test Kitchen, my role is that of a test cook. The test cooks at ATK work long hours to test and develop recipes to get them to the level of perfection that the company strives for. On the show, the test cook shares with the host some of the challenges of the recipe and the ways in which they overcame those challenges in testing; essentially, making all the mistakes so that the ‘home cook” doesn’t have to. I’m also the food stylist for all the food on ATK TV and our secondary show, Cook’s Country.

What is the biggest thing you’d like to see changed in the culinary industry, and how are you working toward making that change happen?

This year, I moderated two very important panels on the “good old boys club” topic. The first was offered by SheChef Inc. at SXSW in Austin, Texas, about how women create and curate culinary careers. Our panelist were women who have used their unique career paths to start their own food business and how they’ve been able to foster positive kitchen cultures. The latter was with WCR (Women Chefs & Restaurateurs) Conference in Minnesota, where we discussed ways in which women chefs can speak up and show up for each other; reinforcing and strengthening our leadership voices and skills. People can feel exhausted from hearing these conversations time and time again, especially over a long period of time. But my feeling is that until the culinary industry is safe and fully inclusive, the dialogue should continue.

You’re in the midst of launching the Art of the Hustle Event Series for people pursuing culinary endeavors, what’s the purpose behind those events?

These events are a place where women in culinary can have a platform to teach and share about ways they have become successful and also share the mindsets and actions that may have hindered them. The goal is for everyone to walk away with several new ideas to implement that can help sustain their business. I always hope that networking will happen but I’m hoping for a sisterhood that will become the pulse and vein of SheChef Inc.

What’s the one thing you wish you had known before going into the culinary world?

I wish I had known that there are many paths that can be taken in this industry. You don’t have to be a restaurant chef! You can be a purchaser of a food distributing company, you can be a food stylist, you can be a nutritionist! I wish someone would’ve told me that the possibilities were endless, perhaps also that as a black woman, it’d be a bit more difficult but that despite that, I could do anything I wanted.

Therapy for Black Girls: Meet the Woman on a Mission To Reduce Mental Health Stigma

After watching the first Black Girls Rock awards show Joy Harden Bradford, Ph.D. was inspired to create Therapy for Black Girls, a platform encouraging the mental wellness of black women and girls. Over the years, Dr. Joy has expanded the platform from a blog to a podcast with listeners in 158 different countries, a Facebook group called the “Thrive Tribe” with over 13,000 women and a therapist directory which has grown to over 700 therapists in less than a year. “My work has always been heavily focused on black women and girls,” says Dr. Joy. I think too often we’re so busy taking care of other people that we aren’t always paying attention to what’s going on with us. I wanted a platform that helped sisters put the focus back on themselves.”

We caught up with Dr. Joy to get some insight on self-care, the stigma of mental health in the black community, and cliché phrases to avoid when trying to help a depressed loved one.

What are the stigmas that often hold people of color back from therapy and what services or programs do you offer to combat these stigmas?

I believe that many people of color have been socialized to believe that talking about private matters should only happen within the confines of the family (the whole idea of airing dirty laundry so to speak). Also, many people still don’t know how therapy works or believe that only “crazy” people need therapy. There are also many people who still view mental illness and needing to go to therapy as a sign of a weak faith relationship, which, of course, is not the case.

The Therapy for Black Girls podcast is helping to reduce that stigma. The podcast episodes are designed to help people get an idea of the millions of different reasons someone might benefit from therapy. Listeners are also exposed to a variety of therapists that are guests on the show. This format helps them to realize that we all have different personalities and work differently so there is likely a therapist out there that’s a great fit for everyone. I also do live video chats on both Instagram & Facebook at 12 noon ET every Thursday. I call it Three for Thursday and I share three tips about a topic and then open the floor for general questions. I think it’s a great opportunity for people to get accurate information about mental health and to dispel any myths they may have about how therapy works, etc.

To date, what are your top three episodes?

  1. Self-Worth
  2. Slaying Your Anxiety
  3. This Isn’t What I Imagined

When it comes to mental health, what is the one thing that you think women overlook in maintaining self-care?

Boundaries! I think far too many of us don’t say NO enough. No to that extra task at work, no to that friend who never shows up for us, no to that ex who keeps trying to come back into our lives, etc. I don’t think we always realize the cumulative impact that taking on other people’s stuff can have on our mental health.

What cliché phrases should we avoid when trying to help a depressed loved one?

  • Just pray about it.
  • Your life is so good, what do you have to be depressed about?
  • Life is hard for everyone, toughen up.

While people may be well-intentioned when trying to help a loved one, these sentiments typically only make people feel like you don’t understand them and that you’re not someone they can go to in the future. A nice alternative for this would be something like “I’m sorry to hear that you’re struggling. Do you want to talk more about how you’re feeling?”

What do you believe people can do to reduce the stigma of depression and anxiety?

I think sharing more openly about our own struggles and experiences with therapy helps. I also think we have to be careful with our language. It’s important to remove stigmatizing language from our vocabulary, so saying things like “she’s so crazy” or “this gives me OCD” is something to avoid.

Porsche Mission E

Over the past few years, Tesla’s Model S hasn’t had to deal with much competition. Sure, there are more affordable EVs available from the likes of Chevy, but we’ve yet to see an all-electric luxury car hit the market and truly give the Model S a run for its money. That, however, is about to change with the impending release of the Porsche Mission E.

Set to go on sale sometime in 2019, the Mission E not only looks incredibly sleek, but it boasts some truly jaw-dropping specs as well. Sporting a 0-60 time of 3.5 seconds, the Mission E has a top speed in excess of 155 MPH and can go for 310 miles on a single charge. These Women Are on a Mission to Change How Millennial Moms of Color Are Perceived by Brands

When Ghanaian publicity pros Simona Noce and Nikki Osei met on social media, it forged a purposeful partnership and mission to increase the representation of millennial moms of color in the marketing industry. Through this connection, DistrictMotherhued was born.

“We initially planned to throw one event for all DMV (DC, MD, VA) based millennials moms,” said co-founder Osei. “Then we assessed local mom groups and noticed that black, millennial moms weren’t represented. We screened social media, post-event imagery and there was a glaring observation. I get it; you create for your demographic and most groups in DC, MD, VA wasn’t checking for us but there weren’t any brown faces. I’m not saying black moms were intentionally overlooked, but we weren’t kept in mind. So our inaugural event, “The Mom Loft” evolved from just a party for millennial moms of color to a full-fledged organization.”

(Courtesy of District MotherHued: Huetiful Thanksgiving)

BE: Since launching DistrictMotherhued in 2016, describe the work that you are most proud of?

We encourage and champion mompreneurs, and regularly highlight our moms’ initiatives, celebrate their successes and promote their businesses. Through District Motherhued, many of our moms have secured TV spot and speaking engagements and introduced their products to larger audiences resulting in increased revenue. District Motherhued is about more than just wine night and playdates; we provide opportunities and resources and position our #DMVMomtribe for personal, professional and economic growth.

We’re also really proud of our #DMforHarvey give back! After viewing the devastation in Houston due to Hurricane Harvey and seeing imagery of mothers lacking basic supplies to care for themselves and their children, we took to social media, tapped into our supportive #DMVMomTribe, and through donations we were able to raise funds to ship 10 extra large boxes of necessities collected amongst our moms to our on the ground contacts in Houston, Dallas, and the surrounding areas.

(Courtesy of District MotherHued: Huetiful Thanksgiving)

BE: Reportedly, moms control 85% of household purchases and have a spending power of $ 2.4 trillion, what should companies that are looking to target millennial moms keep in mind when marketing to this group? What do you think companies overlook (or get wrong) when marketing to this group?

When marketing to our hugely influential and widely represented demographic, brands should include us in the marketing materials! So often we receive inquiries from brands interested in collaborating with District Motherhued because they’ve observed the genuine engagement amongst our audience, but when we visit their websites and social media pages they’re completely void of all things melanin! Like, how? You see our impact, understand that we’re consumers but fail to incorporate us in marketing materials. How can I post about your amazing brand when you’ve only provided fliers featuring white moms and children using the products?

BE: You also have an upcoming Momference with panels focused on everything from mommy’s mental health to how to raise future leaders, and navigating non-traditional family structures? How did you choose these topics?

Yes! We’re so excited about The Momference™, a full-day conference geared toward magical, millennial moms of color taking place on Saturday, May 19, 2018, at the Hyatt Regency in Bethesda, Maryland. When choosing topics, we put out feelers on social media/via our newsletter to gauge topics of interest and received hundreds of responses. We couldn’t cover every topic mentioned, but the conference will address topics that were most popular.

Brother of Astronaut Jeanette Epps Demands NASA to Reinstate His Sister to ISS Mission

After being removed from an International Space Station (ISS) mission, the brother of African American Astronaut Dr. Jeanette Epps is calling out the NASA for overt “racism.”

Last year, it was announced that Epps would be the first African American crew member scheduled to go on the ISS in June 2018. Epps, however, was abruptly pulled off the team last week. Instead, she’s been asked to return to NASA’s Astronaut Office in Texas and is being replaced by Serena Auñón-Chancellor, who joined the astronaut corps in 2009 and has been at NASA since 2006.

“Serena Auñón-Chancellor, who previously was assigned to Expedition 58/59, has been reassigned to the Expedition 56/57 crew, launching in June,” reads a statement from NASA released on Thursday. “She is taking the place of astronaut Jeanette Epps, who will return to NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston to assume duties in the Astronaut Office and be considered for assignment to future missions.”

A NASA spokesperson declined to detail a reason for the change, stating “a number of factors are considered when making flight assignments; these decisions are personnel matters for which NASA doesn’t provide information.”

Although Epps has yet to comment on the matter, her brother, Henry Epps, has launched a petition on MoveOn.org demanding that she be returned to the mission. He also expressed outrage over the change on Facebook and accused NASA of intentionally “holding her back,” reports Newsweek.

“My sister Dr. Jeannette Epps has been fighting against oppressive racism and misogynist in NASA and now they are holding her back and allowing a Caucasian Astronaut to take her place!” Henry Epps wrote on Saturday in a Facebook post that has since been removed.

“My sister deserves a chance just life [sic] her white peers! This administration policies and culture is reprehensible against their stance against women and minorities in this nation. We have lost all of the gains we gained over the past 40 years in one year? No more!” he added. “We cannot continue to tolerate what is going on in America but we must stand together and stand behind our people and our [sic] nation!”

The petition garnered over 850 signatures by Monday afternoon.

‘Black in Tokyo’ Documentary: A Woman’s Mission to Increase Cultural Representation

Amarachi Nwosu is a Nigerian American filmmaker, photographer, and writer who moved to Japan to indulge her interest in Japanese culture, design, and food. But when she arrived in Tokyo, a city known for its cuisine, advances in tech, and historical landmarks, she became frustrated with the representation of black travelers. “I didn’t see enough representation of black people in media but I saw it of black culture—youth culture trends and music, but not enough in general media,” says Nwosu. When I did see black people in media it was often as stereotypical characters and that is largely due to the western objectification of black people, which translates all over the world. I knew I had to do something to change it and that was when Black In Tokyo was born.

Black In Tokyo Film

Black in Tokyo is a short documentary which depicts the experiences of five people who have moved to Japan from Eritrea, Ghana, and the United States. Beyond exploring the challenges of being black in Tokyo, the film spotlights the experiential opportunities which have helped black expats build successful careers, relationships, and businesses.

Black in Tokyo

The documentary is part of Melanin Unscripted,  a platform created by Nwosu to dismantle stereotypes and blur the racial lines by exposing complex identities and cultures around the world.

Nwosu’s passion and dedication to “storytelling that brings culture to light” have also landed her on a multitude of platforms including Highsnobiety, OkayAfrica, Huffington Post, CNN Africa, and on documentary projects with VICE Japan. She’s also produced and shot social campaigns for Adidas Tokyo that featured the first African woman on their Instagram page. She’s worked on projects with London-based women’s rights group Equality Now and also works as an ambassador for D&AD in New York and Princeton University’s race relations.

On changing perception.

“Rather than being viewed as “expats” like most white travelers, blacks were often seen as “immigrants” who were often victims of discrimination and prejudice. I saw it as an opportunity to create stories on people all around the world who are making positive strides for themselves and their community.

On monetizing culture and creating opportunities.

A few of the individuals in the documentary talk about how Japanese take their time to study black culture. What can “we” in the U.S. take away from that?

If you are passionate about something, study it, understand the classics, and try to understand the root of that culture you are learning. Japanese people, in general, like to pay attention to details and really take their time to learn things. However, I believe that appropriation exists in all cultures, but the difference is that most Japanese give credit where it’s due, which is something lacking in pop culture in America. Sometimes, people monetize other people’s cultures and forget to credit the source to the sauce. In the U.S., we have to get better at that.

President Trump on Wednesday claimed he did not “specifically” authorize the military operation in Niger that resulted in four soldiers dead. The botched mission has come under intense scrutiny as questions emerged over how the four men died and why they were ambushed by armed militants affiliated with the Islamic State. Asked whether he greenlit the operation, Trump said: “No, I didn’t. Not specifically. But I have generals that are great generals. These are great fighters. These are warriors… I gave them authority to do what’s right so that we win… I want to win. And we’re going to win.”

While it remains to see what the Mission E’s final specs are, we now know how much the car is going to cost — and suffice it to say, it’s not going to come cheap. In a letter to Department of Labor Secretary R. Alexander Acosta, Scott and 10 Republican senators are requesting that the DOL allow for the usage of 401(k) auto portability. That transaction would allow workers to move 401(k) savings from an existing job to a new job, something they cannot do now.

Advocates Request Feedback

The letter precisely asks the DOL to offer an advisory opinion or other guidance clarifying the application of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) to auto-portability of retirement savings. The senators pointed out that a similar request was sent to the DOL in April 2013.

“We are concerned that the continued delay of the Department’s AO is a hurdle to the implementation of a workable, market-based solution that will help our constituents prepare for their retirement.” They stated further, “Without the DOL’s guidance, plan sponsors and others lack clarity around what can be done under the law to facilitate auto portability.”

The stakes are high on the retirement issue. The letter cites research from the Employee Benefit Research Institute that systemwide use of auto portability for all retirement balances could boost private-sector savings by about $ 2 trillion. It states halting leakage from smaller accounts alone would save $ 1.5 trillion.

Big 401(k) Problem: Millions of Americans Change Jobs Each Year

About 14 million Americans on average change jobs each year, with about 40% opting to “cash out” their 401(k)s instead of shifting those funds to another retirement account, Scott says.  He added these “cash outs” incur penalties and taxes, leading to a $ 70 billion annual loss in savings. The highest “cash out” rate occurs with workers with the smallest account balances, those that are $ 5,000 or less. In many cases, those workers are black.

Aiming to prevent that from happening, the  letter states “reducing leakage and consolidating low-dollar accounts through the greater  use of auto portability will set millions of working Americans on a better path to a secure retirement.” Scott believes that his auto portability option could result in more than 2 million employees opting to keep their savings in retirement accounts instead of “cashing out” and incurring losses,” something that could hurt them financially as they approach retirement.

In response, a DOL spokesman said, “The Department welcomes new ideas on ways to help America’s workers manage their retirement accounts as they change jobs in today’s  mobile economy. We have been working with company representatives on their request for an advisory opinion or other guidance, and will continue to do so.”

Retirement-Focused Trade Groups Back Petition

Several trade groups endorse Scott’s letter, including the American Retirement Association, American Benefits Council, Financial Services Roundtable, Investment Company Institute, Insured Retirement Institute, Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association and U.S. Chamber of Commerce to name a few.

Effort Could Help Narrow Wealth Gap Between Blacks and Whites

One of Johnson‘s companies, Charlotte, North Carolina-based Retirement Clearinghouse, offers employee retirement transition services and is an authority on auto portability. Johnson has been a leading proponent of closing the wealth gap between blacks and whites, using auto portability as one of the ways to accomplish that.

“As a businessman committed to finding business solutions to social problems and an employer of minority workers, I know firsthand the importance of retirement savings to close the wealth gap,” Johnson said in a statement. “I am calling upon Secretary Acosta to demonstrate President Trump’s commitment to improving the economic status of minority Americans by issuing an Advisory Opinion on auto portability. ”

“By doing so, the Secretary will demonstrate to African Americans, as I urged the president to do so last Fall, what African Americans stand to gain from a Trump administration. Over the coming generation, auto portability will preserve more than $ 480 billion in savings for low-wage working Americans and more than $ 698 billion in savings for all minority workers.”

To Find Your Mission, Disrupt Your Life

We saw how choosing the mission-driven life is the basis of social entrepreneurship. We choose it out of a sense of responsibility to the world and to the value of our own lives.

But that sense of responsibility and the yearning for a more purposeful life often come to us before we know what our mission is.

How do we find our mission?

In my experience, the answer is to disrupt your life and search for it.

New Perspectives

When I quit my career to embark on a new path, I didn’t know what I was doing or seeking. My instincts were strong but their message unclear. I just knew I needed to get away.

I bought a one-way ticket to Mexico, where I’d never been. I told myself I was taking a sabbatical, but beyond that, all was unknown. I didn’t even know where I would sleep the night I arrived — let alone that I would discover my life mission three months later.

But that was the point: it was a time of not knowing, of experimenting, of exploring and deepening a new awareness.

For the first few weeks, I discovered the joy of traveling aimlessly and lightly through a new country, reawakening my sense of curiosity. Settling in Oaxaca, I gained a deeper appreciation of craft by studying ceramics and music, and fueled my self-reflection by studying philosophy at a local university.

I wasn’t interested in a single “truth,” but in learning to see life from multiple perspectives.

Doing By Not Doing

My whole life up to then had been about “productivity.” As a business consultant, the key metric was billable hours; as a global trade executive, financial returns. Time was literally money, and the ideal person a kind of productivity machine.

Now I could see that old model in a new light. I was re-humanizing my relationship to time and my understanding of value.

But it wasn’t easy. The old metrics still haunted me. What was I doing with myself? What value was I adding?

Self-doubt began to wrack me. For weeks I’d wake in the middle of the night scared I’d made the wrong decision. I’d thrown everything away and what had I gained? Was I really an escapist like my family and many of my friends said?

Gaining Clarity

Then, one night, I overcame these doubts by simply deciding I’d done the right thing. That was it: a deep, defiant decision. I woke in the morning with a newfound sense of clarity.

When I walked outside into the day, I met the person who would soon help reveal my mission to me — a neighbor who introduced me to the farmers with whom I’d eventually start my social enterprise.

That was the most valuable lesson from this exploratory time. When you have clarity about your commitment, the right opportunities emerge. I’ve experienced it again and again ever since.

Curiosity, joy, integrity, clarity of commitment — all of these are essential to social entrepreneurship in its deepest sense. But I had to disrupt my life and take a risk in order to rediscover them.
